Minnetonka’s Minnesota State Championship Minnetonka Game & Fish Club
MGFC hosted the second leg of the Minnesota State Championship on August 24th and 25th. This weekend was actually two different matches shot over the same days. Some had shot the first leg of the MN State in June and were in contention for the 3 gun title and well as the 4 gun title. The Sporter State Champion would be crowned and we had a HV/SP Two Gun for those that missed the June match. The weekend brought varying weather conditions. The practice day on Friday was beautiful with light winds that were very stable and limited mirage. Spirits were high and everyone had fun putting bullets down range. The first match of the Sporter 100 commenced and conditions were fairly stable. The wind velocity began to pick up through the third target and match 4 and 5 were a very different story. The shooters now faced gusty head winds that switched to tail winds along with sharp velocity changes. Those that dared to shoot the very brief periods of calm paid the price. A lot of head scratching was going on, I saw other heads shaking and heard a few choice words that can’t be put to print. Jerry Lahr got figured out a little something, found the zone and shot very well. He finished in 1st place with a .2348, Keith Christianson was 2nd at .2768 and Bill Storbeck took 3rd at .3270. Keith had the small group, a nice .127. After a much needed lunch break the line split, We had four shooters competing in the Unlimited 100 and the balance shot HV100. The wind conditions did not get any better; they actually got worse. Mirage was not a factor but a trigger pull at the wrong time was devastating. Jerry decided to put his bag gun to the test and compete with the rail guns, We welcomed his challenge. After a long afternoon picking the dust out of our eyes, load adjustments and a little frustration here is how it played out. Mark Buettgen took top Unlimited honors shooting a .2402. Bill Storbeck finished 2nd with a .2882 and Keith Christianson captured 3rd at .3888. On
L-R Stan Durda, Bill Storbeck, Jerry Lahr, Kieth Christianson & John Hanson the Heavy Varmint side John Hanson finished 1st with a .3648, Jay Sperry came in 2nd at .4368 and Stan Durda had 3rd place shooting a .4420. Small group for the rail guns was shot by Bill Storbeck a.138. The small group trophy for the bag shooters went to Dave Birch with a .130. At the end of the day every one was happy to be cleaning their guns and hoping for a little calmer conditions on Sunday. The following morning kicked off the 200 yard Unlimited/Heavy Varmint. Everyone on the line was greeted with bright sunshine and cooler temps. Wind conditions started out slightly calmer than we had on the previous day thru match 1. By the start of match 2 conditions had changed dramatically. The tails winds were back and intensifying, along with heavy mirage that made it difficult to see bullet holes or target rings. It was pretty clear at this point that any semblance of a group was going to go a long way on the stat sheet. In the Unlimited class, yours truly found a little gap in the conditions and shot a .2214 to claim 1st place. Mark Buettgen followed in 2nd with a .3073
and Mr. “bag gun” Jerry Lahr finished 3rd at .3245. The Heavy Varmint shooters had a tougher time peering thru the scopes but Stan Durda shot well in the conditions and took 1st place with a .3337. Ken Hanson finished in 2nd at .3341 followed by John Hanson in 3rd with a .3952. Small group honors went to Ken Hanson in HV with a .387 and Bill Storbeck in UL with a .250. The Sporter 200 was contested after lunch with the exact same wind conditions we had faced in the morning. The mirage got a little worse as everyone tried to buckle down and survive the agg. In the end I managed to shoot a .3476 to take 1st place, Jerry Lahr claimed 2nd place with a .3896 and John Hanson finished in 3rd at .4034. Everyone that shot on Sunday was really challenged by the range and gained some great experience to apply in the future. Nevertheless, no one was disappointed it was over. Jerry Lahr took home the MN State Sporter trophy and the Three Gun title...Congratulations! --Bill Storbeck Jr Please see match results on page 27...

Larry Costa Wins 2013 Group Nationals! Fairchance Gun Club hosted the 2013 Group Nationals and opened to competitors three days early for practice. Standard protocol for a National event…and it was necessary. This range can test the best of the best and leave them in tears. The topography is such that the range drops off the side of a hill causing strange and unpredictable wind currents. Flag stands must be erected 10-15 feet high so shooters can gauge conditions and the weather itself was throwing curves with ground fog and threatening precipitation. Regardless of this, 100 shooters came to vie for the title of Four Gun Champion. After the opening ceremony, we began the UNL100 promptly at 8AM. The comeback kid, Lester Bruno gave a good run for the money but Kenneth Pritt won the first yardage with a 0.1964. The following day began with
a heavy blanket of fog which persisted until around 10AM. Tony Boyer, benchrest shooter extraordinaire, once again took center stage and won the SP100 with a 0.1798 aggregate. In the afternoon it was time for Larry Costa to make his move with an aggregate 0.1820 for the LV100 win. Wednesday morning the HV100 was contested and US World Team member Lee Hachigan took the win with a 0.1640. After the 100-yard awards were presented by MC’s Bill Reahard and Jerry Van Sicle, the General Membership meeting was held. You can read the Board and General Membership Meeting Minutes in this issue. Moving right along, Thursday morning was time for the UNL200 and southern boy Wayne Campbell won handily with a 0.2176 aggregate. Tallying up the points for grand and Lester Bruno was the winner with a nice 0.2268. Following this long day of shooting, our gracious hosts provided the hungry shooters with a tasty spaghetti dinner. Friday morning came and the shooters were up promptly beginning with the LV200. Honey Badger and new Hall of Fame entrant Bart Sauter stood apart from the rest with a 0.2052 win giving him an overall grand score of 0.1940 which landed him the Grand as well. Wrapping up the SP200 was new HOF entrant Harley Baker’s job and he took it seriously by winning the yardage with a 0.1975. Points being tallied up it was a very close call for the Sporter Grand but Mr Benchrest, Tony Boyer held the lead with a 0.2161 a full 6/10,000ths of an inch ahead of Larry Costa’s 0.2167. This second place finish only served to fuel Larry’s fire as he went on the next morning to win the HV200 with a tight 0.1774. Points tallied for the Heavy Grand and Lee Hachigan was top dog in this battle with a 0.1863 aggregate. Four-man team “Boyer’s Bunch” won this year with a combined agg of 0.2222. Team members were Tony Boyer, Bob Scarbrough, Jr, Andy Shifflett and Jeff Gaidos. When the points were calculated at the end, Larry Costa was not to take another second place finish in this
National event. He closed the gap on the pack and won the trifecta; 2-Gun with a 0.2097, 3-Gun with a 0.2056 and 4-Gun with a 0.2213. After a decade of working towards the goal of Hall of Fame induction, Larry Costa is now not only the 2013 Group Nationals 4-Gun Champion, he is also the latest HOF inductee. Congratulations to Larry and all the winners in this event. Thank you to all those who participated and to our great hosts at Fairchance, as well as the target crew, statistician and kitchen help. We are grateful for your kind hospitality. A special thank you to PMA Tool, Smiley Hensley wind flags, Lyman Products, BAT Actions, Bruno Shooters Supply, Accugauge, Bartlein Barrels and Sinclair International for their numerous and thoughtful donations in support of benchrest and the NBRSA.

Oak Hill: Don’t Shoot A Big One by Cecil Peterson July 21, 2013
You don’t have to shoot the smallest groups all day to win; Just Don’t Shoot A Big One. Our winner today did not shoot any of the smallest groups on the 100 yard match. He then shot three groups at 200 yards that were the small groups for this yardage but he really managed to pull away from the pack by NOT shooting a big one. How do you keep from shooting the big group? Some suggestions are: 1. Keep the gun in tune during the match. 2. Really good consentration on what the flags are doing and shoot only when they are aligned the same for each shot and the same intensity. 3. Be able to shoot 5 shots quickly to take advantage of a condition. 4. Table manners need to be consistent from shot to shot. The list goes on and on and each competitor places different emphasis based on his shooting style. Equipment and components are certainly important but most shooters are not handicapped in thsi area and most are equal from shooter to shooter. The exception here is the unusually good (Hummer) barrel. Dean Ekstrom won the 100 yard event followed closely by Kenny Stone (Our Newbie), Jim Schmidt, Bob Cotton and Keith Christianson. Bob Cotton had the small group of 0.153. Dean continued his dominance at 200 yards by putting a whopping on the pack with a 0.2164 agg, followed by Jerry Wick, Jim Schmidt, Kenny Stone, Jerry King. Dean also had the small group of 0.279.

2013 Board & Membership Meeting Minutes The annual meeting of the NBRSA Board of Directors was called to order by Vice President Don Nielson at 10:02AM on Satuday, September 14, 2013 at the Uniontown Public Library in Pennsylvania. In attendance were: Don Nielson, Vice President, John Horn, Financial Officer, Audrey Brown, Business Manager, Editor & Secretary, Jack Neary, Eastern Regional Director, Scott Hunter, Gulf Coast Region Director, Jack Snyder, Mid-Continent Region Director, Bud Mundy, Mississippi Valley Region Director, Terry Meyer, North Central Region Director, Wayne Campbell, Southeast Region Director & International Representative, Eric Stanton, Northwest Region Director, Tom Libby, Southwest Region Director Kent Harshman, World Records Committee Member, David Halblom, Score Records Committee Chairman. RE: World Records Report: Kent Harshman was presenting the Group World Records Report on behalf of Chairman Gene Bukys. Mr Harshman indicated all is well with only one outstanding request for the Board’s consideration. He proposed a change in Section D. TOURNAMENT RULES, Rule (14) PROCEDURE FOR OFFICIAL RECOGNITION OF A WORLD RECORD, paragraph (g) [pg. 29 of the online vsn.] to: The Chairman then records the scores of the 3 Committee Members (range measurement is not included), computes an average of .0001 inch on individual groups and aggregates, and that score is the official measurement. In the case of the Hunter Class, the Chairman will use the score determined by the majority of the Records Committee instead of an average measurement. Mr Campbell made a motion to accept the change in measuring verbiage as submitted which was seconded by Mr Hunter. The motion passed unanimously. RE: Score Records Report. Mr Halblom said there are 2 records in process that will fill all the categories for score world records. There have been no 25X’s shot this year or at least none presented to the committee. RE: World Team Report: Mr Campbell said that the team is set but there are issues with gun permits and govern-
mental approval backlogs are a concern. After discussion, the 2014 World Team Qualifiers will be: Cactus: March 15-16, 2014 Hog Roast: 1st weekend in May St Louis East-West: 2nd week in June Rattlesnake: August Group Nationals: Holton in September RE: Long Range World Records & Rule Book Report: Mr Nielson said there were several records shot and that he has turned the Long Range Score Committee over to Karl Hunstiger. Mr Hunstiger will take care of all the records now. Mr Nielson discussed the tie breaking rules for the Long Range rulebook. Mr Nielson said his opinion is to continue with the method Dick Davis and Karl Hunstiger use, which is: For a Long Range Score Tie: Refer to X count. If the X count is tied, refer to the highest single target score. There are up to 6 chances to break a tie. For a Long Range Group Aggregate Tie: Refer to the smallest single group. There are up to 6 chances to break a tie. This language will replace that which exists on p.24 in Edition #1 (January, 2012) Long Range Rules under Section H. Ties. Mr Libby motioned to change long range tie breaking to the method described above and with the change the rulebook is accepted as presented by Mr Nielson with the two changes to the tie breaking method and mach fee change to $3/shooter/day. Motion seconded by Mr Meyer and unanimously passed. RE: Target Committee Report. Mr Horn said the NBRSA has had a longstanding relationship with Orrville Printing and has historically entered into an agreement to purchase paper by the truckload. As targets are needed they are printed and Orrville maintains the inventory in their plant. We have a 2 year supply of paper remaining and are using about 300 cases per year. We have currently 300 cases printed and paid for so we have an approximate 1-year supply of targets printed and paid for. When we will need to purchase more, it is quetionable whether NBRSA will have funds needed to repeat the current process, so we are investigating alternatives
with Terry Meyer, who is knowledgeable in the printing industry. RE: Financial Report. Mr Horn addressed the condensed financial statement. Mr Meyer asked if we are making money sufficient to cover our needs and Mr Hunter asked if we should consider increasing target costs. Mr Horn said it is worth considering. Mr Neary asked if we should increase advertising costs and Mr Horn agreed. Mr Horn noted that D&O insurance is in place. He reviewed the Cash Flow and Profit and Loss Statements. Membership trends show 2011-2013 statistics with pertinent data. Comparing 2012 match statistics to 2013 shows a drop in group shooting and score remains the same as does long range. Mrs Brown discussed the magazine cost breakdown and match fee payment status. Mr Libby made a motion to approve Mr Horn’s financial statements seconded by Mr Mundy and approved unanimously. Mr Stanton made motion to break at 11:45am seconded by Mr Libby. The Board reconvened at 12noon. RE: Hall of Masters Program. Mr Mundy made a motion to disband the Hall of Masters seconded by Mr Neary. In Favor votes: Mr Meyer, Mr Hunter, Mr Neary, Mr Campbell, Mr Mundy and Mr Snyder. Opposed: Mr Libby and Mr Stanton. Motion passed. RE: Traveling Trophy Committee. St Louis was receptive to building a display case for the group perpetual trophies as a permanent home. Mr Mundy made a motion to table perpetual trophy storage until next week which was seconded by Mr Meyer. Motion passed unanimously. Old Business from 2012 Board of Director Meeting Minutes: Page 3. Open item on whether or not to continue the Hall of Masters program. The Board decided this meeting to disband the program. Page 4. Test case proposals for online voting to include one long range item, one score and one short range item. These were to be placed on the website to illicit online voting by the membership. Mr Hunter said that the bylaws state that changes for the

courses of fire must be approved by the general membership. After the online participation numbers were discussed with the Board, Mrs Brown said the participant numbers were too small to be a statistically valid sample size to accurately reflect the member population. Page 4. The perpetual trophies as well as the new as yet still incomplete traveling trophy plaques were on display in the clubhouse at the Fairchance Group Nationals for the member participants to view. Mrs Brown said they are not yet complete and will be returned to Sheridan this year. They will be completed and available for next year’s Group Nationals. Mr Meyer made a motion to table traveling trophy disbursement until these new plaques are completed in 2014. Hunter second and passed unanimously. Page 7. Long Range Varmint Nationals attendance has dropped from last year’s event. Mr Stanton made a motion to keep this event as is with the hope that participation will increase. Mr Hunter seconded and the motion passed unanimously. Page 9. Change in Nationals format. Mr Neary said this motion came from former SW Regional Director, Mr Murdica last year and he tabled this motion to see if the new sporter class went through. Mr Stanton made a motion to keep nationals format and retain sporter class. Motion was seconded by Mr Neary and passed unanimously. Page 9. Semiautomatic rifle class. Mr Stanton made a motion that the Board vote that the trial period of semiautomatic rifles has concluded and there is insufficient interest to pursue this at this time. Motion second by Mr Neary and unanimously passed. North Central agenda Items: 1. Reduce print issues of Precision Rifleman to 11/year; combine JanuaryFebruary or February-March. Saves $5,000 ($2000 editing expense + $2300 printing cost + $700 postage).Potential loss of ad revenue is unknown. Mr Meyer said he is making a motion to accept this item as written. Motion died due to lack of a second. 2. Initiate Endowment Series of donation levels: Bronze, Silver, Gold & Platinum Levels with commensurate, complimentary “thank you” items which recognize the contribution level, ie: $1000 Bronze Level includes embroi-
dered/patched Leather Bomber Jacket with logo and level. Mr Meyer made a motion to initiate endowment series of donation levels as written in agenda item 2. After discussion, he amended his motion to make an Endowment Committee to explore new methods of contributions with John Horn as the Chair. Mr Hunter seconded the motion and added he feels we do need to get some type of a program developed. This motion passed unanimously. 3. Redistricting proposals for more even member representation. Item withdrawn. 4. Amend By-Laws to establish a requirement by Life Members for at least annual contact with the NBRSA office. Life membership will expire if contact is not made annually to ensure database integrity. Item withdrawn. 5. Mr Meyer made a motion to discontinue Life Memberships which was seconded by Mr Libby. Mr Libby and Mr Stanton are in favor of discontinuing Life Memberships. Mr Meyer, Mr Hunter, Mr Neary, Mr Snyder and Mr Mundy were against. Mr Campbell abstained. Motion failed. The Board adjourned for lunch at 1:18pm and reconvened at 2:40pm. 6. Proposal for establishing a pool of National Event locations across the country in a rotation schedule for the ranges. Establish a set of criteria by which a range will be certified to hold a National Event in a particular NBRSA certified discipline, ie: 50 benches, amenities.) Establish a set of rules of insertion for new member ranges to be added to this pool. Item withdrawn. 7. Form an F-Class Bench committee to advance the organization by supporting and publicizing F-Class Bench shooting as a sanctioned class. Clarify rules for the sport and promote the class. Mr Libby made a motion that will form a committee to explore this. Motion seconded by Mr Mundy. All directors voted in favor except Mr Snyder. Motion passes. 8. Each Region to have an Alternate Director for continuity. Mr Meyer made a motion to accept this item as written; second by Mr Hunter and passed unanimously. 9. Relay rotation at the National Day one Starts with relay one. Next relay two would be first. Day three relay
three starts and so until all relays have started and then start all over until match is over. Mr Meyer made motion to accept as written and seconded by Mr Campbell. In Favor Mr Meyer, Mr Hunter, Mr Campbell and Mr Stanton. Against Mr Libby, Mr Mundy, Mr Snyder and Mr Neary. Mr Neary expressed concern shooters may miss their respective relay by changing relays each day during the Nationals. Mr Nielson broke the tie and voted for mandatory national relay rotation. Motion passed. 10. Each Director will appoint and Alternate Director to help him. The Director or Alternate must go to any National Match that is scheduled in their Region to get feedback from the shooters, ie: Hunter, Long Range or Varmint for Score. This information should be reported back to Directors meeting at the Group National. Item withdrawn. 11. Member ranges must ensure match fees and membership dues are paid in full by year end to secure a shooting schedule for the subsequent year. Mr Meyer made motion to accept this item as written. Second by Mr Stanton. All directors in favor except Mr Snyder. Motion passed. 12. Propose to sell match directors at member ranges patches at $2.50/patch to provide on-site to those members who earn the patch. This provides immediate gratification and distributes cost. Currently NBRSA has the entire burden of the cost of the program. This allows NBRSA to recover the cost of the patch purchases. After discussion, Mr Neary amended his motion for the Business Manager to provide each director a quantity of patches to distribute to members/match directors as needed. Neary would prefer control over the patches than a club. The Business Manager will place a notice in the magazine “for screamer patches, contact your Regional Director.” Mr Hunter seconded the amended motion. Motion passed unanimously. Hunter Class: Mr Meyer wanted to discuss the hunter class meeting at the 2013 Hunter Nationals which was held by Ron Shultz at Mill Creek. The hunters voted 20 to 15 to remove the case capacity and caliber restriction for a 2-year period. Mr Meyer asked for a vote to accept their 2-year trial period. Second by Mr Campbell and passed unanimously.
November, 2013 Precision Rifleman Mississippi Valley Agenda Items: 1. Merge Hunter & VFS Nationals at least two out of every three years. Mr Mundy said there were 38 HTR and 31 VFS shooters at the Hunter Nationals. Had the Director not run the hunter nationals without the VFS addition, he would not have broken even. At 30 shooters they cannot hold a National match. This was confirmed by Mr Meyer. Mr Mundy made a motion that the HTR and VFS merge together as a Nationals event. Second by Mr Meyer. Mr Mundy clarified that the motion is for every year not as written in the agenda item. Mr Neary said the Eastern Region score shooters said they support combined HTR/VFS. Mr Libby said his region wants it separate. Format and relay discussion ensued. In favor of combining HTR/VFS every year is Mr Meyer, Mr Hunter, Mr Neary, Mr Campbell, Mr Mundy, Mr Stanton and Mr Snyder. Opposed is Mr Libby. Motion passed. 2. Bid St Louis for the 2015 Varmint Nationals for the week prior to the World Shoot in St Louis. Item is addressed in National Event Hosting Selection. 3. Registration fees for 600-Yard matches. It currently stands at $50 regardless of the number of classes being fired. I think the fee should be determined by the individual range not NBRSA. We currently charge 50/60/70 for 1/2/or 3 classes of competition. We will comply with NBRSA rules for their matches but feel this should be a range decision. Mr Mundy said our rules stipulate a cap of $50/day. He said if a range wants to charge more for different guns, what harm would there be in that. After further discussion, Mr Mundy withdrew the item pending further clarification with the requesting range. Southwest Agenda Items: 1. Modify the current Board of Directors to include a representative of each discipline within our organization, i.e. Directors for VFS, Long Range, Hunter, etc. Leave the current regional Directors as now in place and add new positions for the Director for each discipline. Mr Libby made a motion to accept #1 as written. Motion died due to lack of a second. 2. In the new rule book on page 55 under number 5, Official Scorer, it reads,
“Competitors are not permitted in the scoring area.” We would like it to read: Competitors are not permitted in the scoring area or stat house while the scoring is going on without being accompanied by a Referee or Match Director. Violators will be disqualified from that aggregate. Mr Libby made motion to accept this agenda item as written and seconded by Mr Stanton. All Directors voted in the affirmative except for Mr Meyer. 3. Arizona Benchrest Shooters at the Ben Avery Shooting Facility in Phoenix, Arizona would like to be considered for the 2015 NBRSA Group Nationals. Item is addressed in National Event Hosting Selection. 4. I would like to see the NBRSA make printable certificates for match awards. These would be downloadable for a match director to utilize for awards. I would say 8.5 x 11 size; something suitable to frame for 1st, 2nd 3rd placements per yardage per class & small group. I would like a line to fill in the name of the shooter. This would help the small clubs with lower turn out. Mr Libby made a motion to accept #4 as written. Mr Stanton seconded. Motion passed unanimously. 5. Clarify stock dimension regulations to address dependency on action length. Mr Libby made a motion to form a committee to review #5 with John Horn and Don Nielson to address this issue before the end of the year. Second by Mr Stanton. Motion passed unanimously. Mid Continent Agenda Items: 1. Propose to clarify Section D5.c “Approval of Tournament Dates” in the NBRSA Rules & By-Laws v38. Page 17 states, “No date for a Registered Tournament may be approved if within 7 days of the first day of the National Championship Matches…” Does this apply only to the Group Nationals or does the rule apply to all NBRSA tournaments, ie: Hunter, Long Range & VFS? Mr Snyder made a motion seconded by Mr Neary as follows:“No date for a registered tournament may be approved if within 7 days of the first day of the National Championship Matches of a like discipline unless approved by the President.” All Directors voted in favor except for Mr Campbell and Mr Meyer. Motion passed. Eastern Region Agenda Items:
11
1. All 2014 NBRSA Group matches with only (2) relays, based upon low-match attendance, will have 37 minutes between the respective matches in lieu of the current 30 minute break. Mr Neary made a motion to accept #1 as written. Seconded by Mr Campbell. Discussion ensued and those in favor were Mr Neary and Mr Campbell. All others opposed. Motion failed. 2. Extend the current target protest period from 30 minutes to 2 hours so that it may give shooters additional time to review their targets score, in the event targets are posted late or during the start of the afternoon aggregate; whereby a shooter may not have time to review their last target. Mr Neary made a motion to accept #2 as written. Motion died due to lack of a second. 3. Change the monthly match schedule in the Precision Rifleman magazine to list the match dates by region, by month vs. its current format of listing all given group matches, from all regions, per month. Mr Neary made it a motion as written and Seconded by Mr Hunter. Unanimously approved to change format to by region instead of chronological in the tournament schedule. 4. New item introduced. Mr Neary made a motion proposing that we change course of fire to introduce a warm-up match at the beginning of each day for group nationals and world team qualifying events. Second by Mr Campbell. The motion was then amended by Mr Neary to exclude regional championships. In favor Mr Neary, Mr Campbell, Mr Stanton, Mr Libby. Opposed were Mr Meyer, Mr Hunter, Mr Mundy, Mr Snyder. Mr Nielson broke the tie and voted against. Motion failed. Gulf Coast agenda items: 1. Permit out-of-class shooting events to be registered NBRSA events to promote membership and add a new source of revenue. For score or group records the shooter must be an NBRSA member. Mr Hunter made motion to accept this item as written. Motion died due to lack of a second. 2. NBRSA Class F will accept NRA equipment rules and NBRSA procedural and safety rules. Mr Hunter made motion to accept this item as written. Motion died due to lack of a second. 3. For future single group world re-
12
Precision Rifleman
cords, use four decimal points instead of the current three. Item passed; see Group World Record Report. The Board moved to recess from the library at 5PM and reconvene at the Fairchance Gun Club Clubhouse at 5:28PM. Northwest Agenda Item (new): Mr Stanton presented an item for marketing for new memberships. He proposes to garner support from bullet/ gun/powder manufacturers to provide support for Benchrest 101 clinics. Mr Stanton made a motion to form a committee to review promotional and marketing for financial and/or educational support for initiating Benchrest schools. Seconded by Mr Neary. Discussion ensued as to how to market benchrest to the shooting public. Mr Neary will be part of this committee. Motion was passed unanimously. Southeast Agenda Item: No items submitted. President’s Items For Discussion: 1. Hold two annual Group National events: East and West. Motion made to accept as written by Mr Nielson and seconded by Mr Hunter. Mr Hunter voted in favor. All others opposed. Motion failed. 2. Mr Nielson asked the Board to make a decision whether to continue world records in sporter class if the members accept the sporter class changes. All in favor except Mr Meyer. Item passed. 3. Hall of Fame to include NBRSA exclusively. The Board decided not to pursue this. 4. Long Range Rulebook review. The LR Rulebook was accepted. 5. Review target and rulebook prices. The Board decided to wait 1 year for target price changes. Rulebook prices are now $15. The Board voted unanimously to leave price as is. 6. Review Life Memberships and determine if they should be offered and at what price. See NC #5. 7. Discuss financial disclosure. Email correspondence between Mr Al Elliot, NBRSA Tax Attorney and Mrs Brown was read to the Board. NBRSA By Laws addressing disclosure were read to ensure adherence. 8. Consider allowing ranges to dualregister IBS matches with NBRSA so that our members can receive screamer patches at IBS events and results can be published as well. Mr Nielson
withdrew the item. 9. A Letter received from member Creach was reviewed and discussed. The Board confirmed that Mrs Brown, the Business Manager is authorized to submit agenda items to her Regional Director per 2012 Board Minutes. Mr Meyer made a motion that the magazine publish match results from registered matches. Seconded by Mr Snyder and unanimously passed. National Event Hosting: 2014 Group Nationals are awarded to Holton Gun Club in Holton, Michigan 2015 Group Nationals: St Louis in the first part of September and World Team to follow. 2014 Long Range Nationals: Sloughhouse in Sacramento bids same format as 2013. Format is approved for 600 and 1000 yardages but not F-bench. F-bench needs to be worded not as a national event and no trophies will be awarded by NBRSA for the F-bench match. 2014 VFS Nationals: Casper bids combined VFS/HTR: format is a 100/200/200/300 both guns August 4th. Las Vegas bids VFS only Short range & Long range. 2014 LR Varmint Nationals: open Other Items: Mr Hunter requested a notice be published that if there is are any errors in the printing of the new rule book to please notify your Regional Director. The two errors the Board is aware of are the Map of Europe and no smoking information is not included. Mr Meyer made a motion to have a 3-year moratorium on all rule changes for all three disciplines once the Hunter/VFS Rules are approved with the exception of safety items. The Board has requested Mr Mundy to review the Hunter/VFS Rules and once approved, these too will be included in the 3-year moratorium on rule changes. The moratorium will be concluded January 1, 2017. Motion seconded by Mr Hunter. All in favor except for Mr Stanton. Motion passed. Mr Hunter made a motion at 7:15PM to adjourn the meeting second by Mr Mundy and unanimously passed.
Respectfully Submitted: Audrey Brown, Secretary
General Membership Minutes
Mr Nielson began the meeting by going over the minutes of the Board meeting and he reviewed the new procedure for measuring groups to 4 decimal placements on a group measurement. World team qualifiers were read. Change to long range world record tie breaking change. Mr Horn’s financial report was available in the clubhouse. Hall of Masters was disbanded. Traveling trophy committee – perpetual trophies will be displayed at St Louis permanently. The new traveling trophy plaques were on display for the members to see. Agenda items were all read to the members present. Highlights of which are the Hunter class voted 20/15 to remove case capacity and caliber restriction, which passed. Merging of HTR/VFS nationals every year passed. Adding class representation to each discipline died. 2014 Group Nationals will be held in Holton, Michigan. He stated there would be one week between St Louis Nationals and World Team Championships. Member Bob White asked whether a member going to the stat room would be disqualified to which Mr Nielson replied in the affirmative. Member Chris Harris asked why the world team is after the nationals to which Wayne Campbell responded he didn’t know why it was that way. Mr Harris said the world shoot may tire shooters participating in back to back big events. Mr Campbell said this is the schedule now but there are 2 years for the final format to be determined so it is not yet cast in stone. Manny Garcia asked whether incentives were provided for junior shooters. Don Nielson said there was no agenda item presented for the Board to review on that subject. Mr Campbell said WBC-12 team leaves 10/14/13. He said the US is about 10 senate votes away from the same paperwork problem they are encountering with the Australian government. He wanted the membership to be aware of this. He then reviewed the team A, B, C members going to Australia and representing the US. continued on page 29

Oak Hill August Match: Free Recoil by Cecil Peterson August 18, 2013 Well, we had the pleasure of introducing a new shooter to Benchrest. Everyone was trying to help and show how to play this game to the newbie. One seasoned shooter was helping the newbie and demonstrating the advantages and procedure of shooting, “free recoil”. The new shooter was anxious to try this technique out; the instructor forgot to explain that the shoulder should be close to the stock. Well, we now have a new shooter with the typical “scope eye syndrome”. The new shooter is looking for a new instructor. Maybe he can begin shooting again in a week or two. What a way to welcome a new shooter to his first match! Oak Hill had its Light Varmint match in perfect August weather. The high temp was 82F and a light but switchy wind at 5-15MPH, bright sunshine with some mirage. Dean Ekstrom took advantage of the conditions winning the 100 yard aggregate with a 0.183 followed by Jerry Wick, Cecil Peterson, Keith Christianson and Bob Cotton. Small group was shot by Cecil with a 0.052. Dean continued his winning ways at 200-yards (0.2589) followed by Jim Carstensen, Jerry Wick, Keith Christianson and Cecil Peterson. NorCo: The Sky’s Unlimited for Roger Tillery! by LuAnn Dill July 13-14, 2013 Ault, CO
Welcome back readers to another exciting tale of the Northern Colorado Benchrest Shooter Coyotes. I, Wile E Coyote, was again present. Our two day match was held on July 13th and July 14th. The name of the game was Unlimited 10 shot and 5 shot. Rail guns and bag guns lined our benches as 17 shooters got ready. Let me tell you, those rail guns sure are shiny in the bright July sun. This coyote had to wear shades to avoid seeing spots. Unlike our previous month’s shoot we were blessed with good shooting weather. Not one coyote ate dirt…unless they were sneaking it behind the loading barn. The weekend kicked off with the 2nd leg of our 4-gun, Unlimited Varmint 10 shot at 100 yards. Small groups are so much more difficult when throwing 10 rounds down range but Bob Prather, aka White Panther, showed everyone how it was done with a small group of 0.1550. I’d like to mention as well, Mr. Prather wasn’t content to only shoot one small group for the 100 yard match; he shot three! The Panther wasn’t satisfied with showing off his skills on small groups; he also won the match with an Agg of 0.2008. Great job Bob! Please join me in a cheer for the other half of Bob’s team, Mary. A nice break was welcomed by all as the heat and wind was working itself up. Tall tales and friendly banter filled our loading barn along with the sounds of chewing. Our match director, Bud Schalles, gathered everyone to the line and shooting resumed. The Unlimited Varmint 10 shot at 200 yards turned the tables on all the shooters. Mirage wiggled and rolled through our scopes and evened up the odds between bench gun and rail gun. Roger Tillery took the lead and won the match with an Agg of 0.3162. Impressive! Rodney Brown claimed the small
group with a 0.4080. Top dog shooting as only a coyote can do. The final day of our shoot began with Unlimited Varmint 5 Shot at 200 yards. It was a gorgeous Colorado day and all shooters were raring to go. Roger was still leading the pack with his Agg win of 0.3201. The small group was claimed by Dave Tunbridge with a score of 0.3680. Wow! This coyote was struggling to even see the winner’s dust from the end of the pack. I’m pretty sure I was blinded by the shiny guns; that’s why I couldn’t see anything…yeah. Great shooting guys! Like most Sundays, time seems to zip by and before you know it you’re on the final match of the weekend. Ours was Unlimited Varmint 5 Shot at 100 yards. Mr. Tunbridge pulled out all the stops winning the match with an Agg of 0.1866, while Loren Lieder shot the small group of 0.109. Like Bob before him, Loren was bound and determined to get the small group; he also shot three of them in the match. Excellent shooting! I’d like to recognize the Grand winners now. Rodney Brown stood tall in 1st place with a Grand Agg of 0.3084 for Unlimited Varmint 10 Shot 100/200, 2nd leg of the 4 gun. Roger Tillery held his trophies high in 1st place with a Grand Agg of 0.2993 for Unlimited Varmint 5 Shot 100/200. Can I get a drumroll please? Roger Tillery won the weekend with a Grand Agg of 0.3039. Awesome shooting everyone! This coyote loves to shoot and loves to see you all come out; having fun is what it’s all about. Everyone is welcome so please come out and join us. Lastly a round of applause for our office staff, target crew and match director and all the other folks who work to make these shoots happen. Hachigian Takes Eastern Regional 3-Gun It couldn’t happen to a nicer guy. Lee Hachigian wins the 2013 Eastern Regional Three-Gun; Jack Neary wins the Regional Two-Gun. Congratulations to Lee Hachigan on his Three-Gun win at Holton this past September. What a great ending to the season on this hemisphere as Lee and the other WBC12 contenders get ready to try their hand in Australia at the World Benchrest Championships. Also, congratulations to Jack Neary for winning the Two-gun against a pretty stout field. Lee was right behind him in the Two-gun. Joel Nader won the unlimited grand on Monday with Lee close behind contributing to his Three-Gun win. An interesting aside to this match is that our great bullet maker, Lowell Hottenstein was third in LV grand and second in the unlimited grand while winning UNL 200. The reason this is so interesting is that Lowell has been relearning how to shoot the bag guns right-handed due to problems with his left eye over the past couple of years. Lowell shot the bag gun right-handed and the rail gun left-handed at Holton this past weekend. Try that sometime and let us know how that works out for you. There were 45 contenders for the
LV/HV competition. Again, congratulations to the winners at Holton this past weekend. Prairie Dog Target Club’s July Shoot by Mel Klasi July 6-7 Porcupine, SD
July 6 is the Heavy Varmint Regional at 100, 200 and 300 yards. We call it the Prairie Dog Shoot. On July 7, we contested the Light Varmint 100-200 yards which is the LV Regional and third leg of the 4Gun. The morning of July 6 began cool and cloudy with winds from the north and remained that way most of the day. We had 18 shooters including old grouchy for the annual 100-200-300 yard Prairie Dog Shoot and HV Regional. Tom Evans won the 100 yard aggregate with a 0.2460 with Keith Hakeman in 2nd place and Mel Klasi taking 3rd place. Tom also shot a 0.117 for small group at 100 yards. The 200 yard aggregate went to Rodney Brown with a 0.3663 aggregate followed by Heath Ferguson in 2nd and Mel Klasi in 3rd place. Darrel Phillips took small group honors with a 0.424. At 300 yards we had enough mirage to make seeing bullet holes a challenge. First time shooter at Porcupine Larry White had the winning aggregate of 0.3309 with Dave Gibson taking 2nd place and Bud Schalles 3rd place. Small group at 300 yards was Larry White’s 0.485. The winner of the $5 gold piece for the single shot at the prairie dog’s head at 300 yards was Truman Wilson.
The winner of the Prairie Dog Trophy for the 100-200-300 HV grand aggregate was Mel Klasi who turned two 3rds and a 4th into a first. Second place was taken by Rodney Brown and 3rd place went to Larry White. On Sunday morning the temperature started at around 70 degrees and rose to the mid-80s by the afternoon. The winds started out from the south then switched to the west then the east and finally ended the day from the north. We began shooting in a light rain but it ended after about 30 minutes. We shot the LV 200 first and the top 4 finishers were very close with Cliff McNairy winning with a 0.2645 aggregate. The next 3 aggregates were in the 27s with Dave Tunbridge taking 2nd place and Dave Gibson 3rd place. The small group at 200 yards was a 0.262 shot by the youngest shooter on the range, Brandon McNairy. Brandon’s picture is on the cover of the July 2013 Precision Rifleman where he is standing at the bench to shoot. There was a little bragging going on at the McNairy loading bench. Brandon also had the second smallest group in the HV 200. Good shooting Brandon! At 100 yards Dave Tunbridge won with a 0.2562 aggregate with Mark Schwab taking 2nd and Dave Gibson 3rd place. The small
group at 100 yards was Terry Hettich’s 0.118. The LV grand aggregate winner was Dave Tunbridge with a 0.2638 aggregate, Dave Gibson was 2nd and Mark Schwab 3rd. The two gun winner for the weekend was Mel Klasi with a 0.3389 aggregate, Dave Tunbridge was 2nd and Dave Gibson was 3rd. In the five yardages shot for the weekend, eleven of the eighteen competitors finished in the top three in at least one yardage plus three other competitors shot the small group in a yardage. So fourteen of the eighteen competitors won a certificate, plaque, or prairie dog making for a fun competition. Tim Stamm did the scoring for Pat Deckert who is recovering from her recent illness and surgery. The next match at Prairie Dog is a LV/HV on Aug. 31/Sept 1. The HV will be the last leg of the 4 gun. Concentricity Gauge This type of indicator was designed specifically for checking rotating diameters and in fact is exactly the type of gauge used in the machining industry for decades to measure run out; the very thing that we as hand loaders are striving to minimize or eliminate. At 21 Century Shooting it is our goal to modernize an industry that has seen little change over the years. Our concentricity gauge is a perfect example. st

This makes it very easy to control feed rate of the cutting operation, generating a very fine turned finish. Case holder drivers are designed to be the most gentle driver, yet providing an adequate hold.

Dave Tack Dominates Sloughhouse 200 by Dan Lutke July 6-7, Folsom Shooting Club
We shot the 5th Annual Sloughhouse 200 over the weekend in July. This is our big fun match of the year where we shoot all four classes at 200 yards with trophies for all the winners. We had 14 contestants on Saturday and 16 on Sunday. The club provided a pizza lunch on Saturday and chili on Sunday. We also had a big birthday cake for Bob Dorton and Bill Mellor and Megan the Range Officer. Weather was not as bad as expected; a high of 90F both days. We also had a visiting shooter from Washington state - Mike Zdilar. Marty Childers shot the smallest group of the whole weekend, a .303. It was a great weekend. Hope to see you all next year. Jan Sarras Wins Nevada State Four Gun The 2nd half of the Nevada State Four Gun took place on September 28th and 29th, 2013 at the Washoe County Regional Shooting Facility in Palomino Valley, Reno Nevada. The attendance was small and the winds were huge! The shooters endured 12 to 20 mph winds on Saturday in a warm –up for the 35-45 mph winds all day Sunday! It was challenging to say the least and the scores reflected the difficulties. The first agg was the Sporter 200. Jan Sarras took this agg while also shooting two small groups along the way. Mark Ronchetti nailed down second and was followed by Don Archibald. Small group for the agg was turned in by Arizonan Pete Savage, a nice .380. The afternoon portion was now “Rail Gun” time. At 200 yards, young Travis Archibald show everyone the way it should be done! Congratulations to Trav on winning this agg. There were only two aggs in the twos; the other shot by Trav’s dad, Steve who took 2nd place and Jan Sarras held on for third. Travis also shot the small group at .328. Saturday night at the range was somewhat spooky! I was rocked to sleep by the winds, BIG WINDS! I awoke around midnight, something weird, what? No wind! That lasted about 3 minutes and then it really
cranked up. The beautiful sunrise met up with the howling winds and it was a draw. Neither backed down as the winds kept blowing and the sun kept shining. Thank goodness, as Saturday was cold enough that all shooters were wearing sweatshirts and jackets. At least on Sunday one could get by with less outer wear as the temps made it into the 75°F range. Sunday morning we got underway with the rails @ 100 yards. Sarah Archibald whooped us all! In the big winds she held on and won the agg. Woohoo! Steve Archibald and Jan Sarras shot the exact same scores and Jan was awarded 2nd via Creedmoor having shot the smallest group twixt them, a nice .196. Steve settled for third and Lonnie Gordon had a hummer @ .140 for small group for the yardage. The last agg was again in the Sporter class. Jan Sarras took top honors and also the small group for the yardage, .240. Yes, the winds were still rippin’. Don Archibald took 2nd and Mark Ronchetti nestled in for the 3rd place spot. Sporter Grand standings were Jan Sarras, Don Archibald and Mark Ronchetti from first to third. Unlimited Grand standings were Steve Archibald, Jan Sarras and Travis Archibald. The top three in the Three Gun were Mark Ron-

November, 2013 Precision Rifleman General Membership Meeting Minutes continued from page 13 Corporate sponsorships were generous this year. Bartlein Barrels, Shilen, Krieger, BAT, Kebly’s, Bruno Shooters Supply, Shooter’s Corner, cash donations received: Lowell Hottenstein, Stan Buchtel, Pam and Terry Meyer, Harley Baker, Howard Payne, Fairchance Gun Club, Bart Sauter, Billy Stevens, and numerous other and anonymous donors were listed. US World Team Raffle items: windflag set with carrying case made by David Woodward and sold to Chris Harris, Nel Watson hand painted tshirts for multiple matches and multiple years. Manny Garcia was high bid. Don Nielson neck turner sold to John Horn. PMA Tool cleaning cradle and set of cleaning rods. High bid was Dave Woodward. Don Nielson then asked whether the members wanted to review the sporter changes. Scott Hunter stated the new sporter rules; unrestricted stock, unrestricted barrel contour shot off current sand bag rules, any caliber not in excess of a .308, 10.5 # weight limit. In favor of allowing the building of a new sporter: 54 for, 7 opposed. Motion passes. Tom Libby addressed rotation issues with the scheduling of group national tournaments. Presently, there is Phoenix, St Louis and Fairchance that are willing to hold group national events. Midland is tied up with the oil boom, Raton is available but he was unsure whether there were people available to run a national event there. He is concerned that ranges able to hold national events are slim and encouraged the membership to look at different range locations and work together to hold national events at new and different locations. There being no other questions from the general membership, the meeting adjourned.
Respectfully Submitted, Audrey Brown, Secretary

Sahuaro 1000-Yard Benchrest September 14, 2013 Tucson, AZ
It was the usual gathering of intense, eagle eyed shooters that showed up at the Three Points range, west of Tucson Arizona. Of course, some of us need glasses to retain those eagle eyes. The weather was good with clear skies and light winds. Temps rapidly rose into the 90’s which is usually not bad for the southern desert, but with the humidity remaining from the monsoon season, everyone was sure that it was much warmer than that. In spite of the relatively calm winds of about 6 to 12 mph, conditions were still a little tricky, as they always seem to be at this range. Several good groups were shot while those pesky fliers were constantly giving us fits.
Unlike some matches shot here, there were no world records set, but some good shooting was seen just the same. Out of six shooters and ten guns, Jeff Billotte, shooting his 7X57 Improved, won the light gun group with a 5.8” aggregate, Also shooting the smallest group of the match of 4.250”. While Ross Herrick took everything else, Light gun score, heavy gun score and heavy gun group, using his trusty Lazzaroni 30 Patriot. Jeff had to DNF in heavy gun when his barrel-blocked action started unscrewing from the barrel halfway through the relay. Match Director Karl Hunstiger had us finished shooting before noon. Jim and Nancy Schmitt from Arizona Ammuni-
tion stopped by to make sure we were behaving ourselves, and soon, after the trophies were awarded, we were all off to Cindy Lou’s for hamburgers and lots of cold water and soda to fight off the heat. The usual conversations of bullets, barrels, loads, stocks, scopes, powders and practically everything gun related ensued. Sometimes I think I learn more from the lunch time conversations than I do at the shooting bench. As always, we are all looking forward to next month. --Dale Arenson Light Gun Group Jeff Billotte......................3.92” Dale Arenson...................... 7.17” Ross Herrick....................... 7.22” Steve Everson..................... 8.19” Wayne McDonald................. 8/71 Small Group Jeff Billotte........................4.0”

Todd Tyler Stays Hot This Summer & Wins Roadrunner Twenty-two shooters came to a warm Albuquerque range over the Labor Day weekend to shoot the 2013 Roadrunner. William “Doc” Marsh started the light varmint 100 yard match with a .162. Dean Thomas was a close second at .167. Thomas followed that up with a .116 in the second match to take the lead and win a piece of hardware for overall small group. Bob Brackney and Dan Sutton both had targets under .2 to move into second and third. Thomas remained in first place after the third match with a .284, with Brackney holding onto his second place with a .182. Ed Adams bumped Sutton into fourth with a third match small group of .159. Brackney and Adams both moved ahead of Thomas after the fourth match. Brackney shot a .187 to Adams’ .202 and when the dust settled after the fifth match, Bob Brackney took home the first place trophy with a .1954 agg to Adams’ .2096. Sutton finished third, Thomas finished fourth and Ed Maxwell came in fifth. In the afternoon, the mirage kicked in, but that didn’t stop Ed Adams from leading wire to wire in the Heavy Varmint 100 yard match. Adams’ .234, .185, .178, .202, and .308 gave him a .2214 aggregate to take home the first place trophy. The battle was for second place. Larry White’s .288 had him in second after the first match with Hector Elias Jr.’s .289 an angel’s hair behind him. Elias’ .171 in the second match bumped him into second, Butch Fjoser and R.B. Carl in third and fourth. In the third match, Durward Wofford’s
.143 gave him the trophy for overall small group, and moved him into second place, bumping Elias Jr. into third. In the fourth match, Elias Jr’s .246 moved him into second and Bob Brackney’s .172 leapfrogged him into third. Brackney’s .250 was enough to give him the second place trophy while Elias Jr’s .324 was good enough for third. Randy Pumphrey finished fourth and Durward Wofford rounded out the top five. Sunday morning brought another gorgeous Albuquerque morning and the Heavy Varmint 200 yard match started with Butch Fjoser taking the lead after the first match and winning the small group trophy with a .282. Todd Tyler’s .328 and Dean Thomas’ .381 were good enough for second and third. Fjoser couldn’t hang on, and Tyler’s .353 moved him into first place. Durward Wofford’s match small group .325 moved him in to second with Michael Turner moving into third. Tyler’s small hiccup of .638 didn’t hurt too much in the third match, as he stayed in first place. Wofford remained in second, while Jack Snyder’s small group of .372 moved him into third. By the time the fourth match started, the winds started changing and the holes in the targets started getting a little bigger. Tyler’s .490 kept him in first place, while Snyder’s .385 moved him into second. Ed Maxwell moved him into third place. Ron Lax’s small group of .379 helped a bit but he remained middle of the pack. Tyler bounced back in the final match of the morning with a .385 to wrap up the first place trophy with a
.2193 grand aggregate. Ed Maxwell’s .2857 was enough to best Snyder’s .2921 for second and third. Ed Adams finished fourth while Durward Wofford came in fifth. Adams took home the first place trophy for the Heavy Varmint grand agg with a .2629. Tyler was second with a .2686, and Elias Jr came in third with a .2997. Durward Wofford came in fourth and Dave Gibson fifth. Tyler kept his hot hand going in the first match of the Light Varmint 200 yard shoot with a .337. Dean Thomas’ .352 and Durward Wofford’s .357 had them in second and third. Both Thomas and Wofford leapfrogged Tyler in the second match. Bob Brackney’s .447 was small group for the second match. After the third match target’s were hanged, Thomas remained in first place, Tyler’s match small group of .336 moved him into second and Wofford remained in third. Tyler put his stamp on the day in the fourth match by taking the lead and winning the small group trophy with a .272. Wofford’s .383 kept him ahead of Thomas and Ed Adams who where in third and fourth going into the final match of the day and the year for the Albuquerque range. Another shift in the wind brought larger scores on targets and moved competitors around to end the day. Randy Pumphrey scored the small group of the final match with a .499. Todd Tyler maintained his first place with a .571 to win the first place trophy with a .2200 grand aggregate. Durward Wofford took home the second place tro-

phy with a .2882 aggregate. Ed Adams finished third with a .3274. Pumphrey just missed out on a piece of hardware in fourth place with a .3287, and Tonkawa, Oklahoma’s own Mike Cordes finished in fifth. For the Light Varmint grand aggregate, Adams and Tyler switched places from the Heavy Varmint. Tyler finished first with a .2542 to Adams’ .2685. Durward Wofford took home the third place trophy with a .2835. Dan Sutton and Bob Brackney rounded out the top five. For the two gun, Todd Tyler wins with a .2614 grand aggregate, Ed Adams finishes second with a .2657, and Durward Wofford takes third with a .2928. Bob Brackney and Randy Pumphrey rounded out the top five. The target crew of Aaron Snyder and Sam Shelton did another excellent job, There wasn’t one mistake made with switching out targets. The Rio Grande Benchrest Shooters group provided a tasty lunch of cold cuts and soda’s both days. We all look forward to having more shooters next year for our September match, as shooters who come here remark on the quality of facilities as well as the quality of competition and camaraderie. --Mark Motsko Light Vamint 100-Yards Bob Brackney.................... 0.1954 Ed Adams......................... 0.2096 Dan Sutton....................... 0.2362 Dean Thomas.................... 0.2584 Ed Maxwell....................... 0.2744 Durward Wofford................ 0.2788 Todd Tyler........................ 0.2884 Randy Pumphrey................ 0.2904 Greg Smith....................... 0.2930 William Marsh.................... 0.2984 Small Group Dean Thomas..................... 0.116 Light Varmint 200-Yards Todd Tyler........................ 0.2200 Durward Wofford................ 0.2882 Ed Adams......................... 0.3274 Randy Pumphrey................ 0.3287 Mike Cordes...................... 0.3318 Jack Snyder...................... 0.3377 Dan Sutton....................... 0.3436 William Marsh.................... 0.3503 Ed Maxwell....................... 0.3624 Dave Gibson...................... 0.3723 Small Group Todd Tyler......................... 0.272

Tri-Cities MSA Varmint For Score June 29, 2013 Washington Eight shooters showed up for our June VFS match and they sure got their money’s worth. The morning started out with some really nasty looking clouds rolling in and about the time we were done with the warm up match, we had a good ole gully washer on our hands complete with lightening and thunder with gusto. We were okay under our tin roof and I am sure that our 40ft steel flag pole right in the middle of the firing line would have attracted most of the lightening bolts. If it got too bad, we could retreat to the all steel box car that we use to store our target backers and other equipment. Like the stalwart shooters we are, we lived through it and never quit shooting. The target boys got a good bath, but I don’t think that it hurt them a bit. The scores at 100 yards weren’t too bad considering all the activity and Jim shot a fine 250-16X, Glenn with a 250-14X right behind and Paul with a 250-12X. The 200 yards came around with the clouds breaking away to the normal

Thornbury Wins Cal State 4Gun & 2Gun Labor Day Weekend
The California state Varmint class matches were held during labor day weekend at the Dale Wimp Range in Visalia. Thirty four shooters showed for the three day match. The weather started off with temperatures in the low eighties with light winds and slowly changed as the sky became overcast due to smoke from the major forest fires in the Sierras. The temperatures stayed near the high eighties, the big change was the humidity that went up to over forty percent making it very muggy and the heavy mirage at 200 yards made it hard to see your bullet holes. When the 200 yard targets were posted, the moans and groans heard made it clear where the term “wailing wall” came from. The Sporter class match was a complete take over by Norm Jeffery. Norm won the 100 yard match with a .2066 aggregate, Steve Epstein placed second with a .2166 and also won the small group trophy with a .102. Norm shot a .2923 aggregate at 200 yards to win the first place trophy. Dennis Thornbury took second place with a .2935. Gary Sinclair shot a .310 for the small group trophy. Norm Jeffery shot steady all day and ended up with a nice .2494 aggregate to win the Sporter Grand first place trophy. At the 2013 Hunter Nationals, in DeSoto Kansas, the Hunter Class members voted to eliminate the case capacity rule and the caliber restrictions for two years. At the Board of Directors Meeting a separate motion passed for a mandatory three year period for all new rules. What does this all mean for present and future Hunter Class Shooters? As long as you follow all the other rules for Hunter Class, outlined in the Official Rules For Score Shooting Competition posted on the NBRSA website, you can shoot whatever caliber you want for the next three years. For current Hunter Shooters, you do not have to change a thing if you do not want to. Everything that you have been using will still be allowed. The main reason for this rule change is to try and increase the number of Hunter Shooters. Removing the case capacity and caliber restrictions will allow anyone to use their favorite calibers such as 6ppc, 30BR, or anything else under the maximum .338 bullet diameter in this challenging discipline. Many are excited to see if this rule change will help with increasing the numbers. Vic Swindlehurst NBRSA and its members mourn the passing of fellow friend and shooter Vic Swindlehurst who died August 30. He was 95 years young. According to friend Mel Walker, Vic not only made fine rifles but lived and breathed benchrest for more years than he can count. He will be very missed. Our condolences go out to Vic’s family and friends.
A Letter From Porcupine
I received this letter from Don Deckert, Match Director of Prairie Dog Target Club. He wanted me to share with you some thoughts...
“Pat and I would like to express our deep thanks to all the shooters that came to the Prairie Dog Range this year. You all know by now that Pat had a stroke April 26 and it was iffy if we would have any matches for a while. We both decided to go ahead with our schedule and make it work. Well it did work, but not without the help of several individuals. I’ll start with Bud Schalles. He told me to go ahead with the season, then Dave Tunbridge called and said he’d run the computer and get the stats out. We really couldn’t have done it without him. Bud was range master for the Butch Kimmell shoot. Bud also had the trophy for this match made. Thanks a million Bud. Three of my close friends, Tack, Russ and Tim came from Iowa and helped run a match. Thanks guys. Cristan and Verzen ran targets all summer. Can’t have a match without a top-notch target crew. Bill Pond had the trophy plates made. Thanks again Bill. Andy Dowling and Morgan came and helped run targets. I could go on and on and I know I’m forgetting somebody. I hope you don’t get mad. Thank all you guys and gals for everything you’ve done for us, and special thanks to Mary Prather for the meal at the first match.
We plan on having matches next year, so hope you all can come. Pat says she’s going to be in top shape to run the computer but bring yours along anyway Dave. Thanks Mel Klasi too. That’s all for now. God bless everyone of you.” On this Cover: Shooter Extraordinaire Larry Costa fresh off the firing line at Fairchance Gun Club after winning the 2013 Group Nationals 2, 3 and 4-Gun.
