Principles of Blueprinting An Action by Mike Irwin

Many accuracy enthusiasts will suggest the biggest variables involved in precision rifle craft can be summed up with the three “B’s”: barrels, bullets, and bedding. These are undoubtedly vital issues to consider, but let us not neglect one more “B”; blueprinting. Blueprinting the action has commanded the attention of many rifle buffs, spawning countless books, tools, and fixtures, all designed to tweak variables out of the action and allow the remaining “B’s” to do their job flawlessly. The idea is to take a less than perfect action and with a little elbow grease refine it into a shooting platform equal or perhaps even better than many custom actions on the market today. Before the faithful reader begins to prepare themselves for yet another description on tools and procedures to achieve the finest blueprinting results possible, we are about to deviate into a discussion behind the theory of just what entails a “perfect” blueprinted action. This could be summed up in one word: geometry. All you who despised this subject in school, you are in good company with your humble author. Many fervent pleas to my incredibly patient teachers that “I would never use this stuff in real life” have been met with an ironic even comical reality that as a machinist/tool maker/ gun head, no matter the hat to be worn, this “stuff” is with me every day. When it comes to actions, geometry and blueprinting are essentially synonymous. Quite simply the object of blueprinting an action is to create a geometrically correct action. The barrel tenon threads are to be concentric to the bolt, bolt face diameter, as well as the firing pin; the re-

ceiver face is to be perpendicular to the barrel tenon threads and parallel with the bolt face. The bolt face is supported equally by lapping the locking lugs just behind it. To complete the job, when fitting the barrel to the action, (the barrel threads should already be concentric to the chamber and the threaded extension should culminate with a perpendicular shoulder just behind it) it should be secured with a minimal fit to the action threads and seated to the trued receiver face, thus the barrel will be concentric and perpendicular relative to the action and its components. Additionally, the bolt diameter may have bushings installed to create a minimal fit in the action in an attempt to maintain concentricity to the action and barrel, etc. Having dispensed the preamble, allow me to assert that the singular critical geometric relationship we need to be concerned with is the bolt face perpendicularity to the chamber. All other concerns, particularly concentricity concerns, are purely a means to this end, not the end itself. For the purists among us (all other readers may have already left us) allow me to explain this somewhat “controversial” statement. It is important to point out that the bolt is not the primary instrument to align the cartridge concentric to the barrel’s bore. It merely carries the cartridge forward into the chamber and holds it there via the bolt face. The chamber, when cut correctly, will hold the cartridge concentric to the barrel’s bore with its conical shape and perhaps with assistance from the bore itself when bullets are seated out to engage the rifling. In the latter case, the cartridge would theoretically be sus-

pended in the chamber, held by the bullet seated into the rifling and the cartridge head supported by the bolt face. Therefore, it would be easy to see why an out of square bolt face would force the rear of the cartridge to deviate from center, creating concentricity error of the chambered cartridge relative to the rifled bore. Why must the bolt face diameter (the cylinder protruding from the bolt face) be cut perfectly concentric to the bolt and the action and everything else? My contention is that it doesn’t. The typical cartridge head is .010” to .015” under size compared to the bolt face diameter. If it wasn’t, the cartridge would not pivot out of the bolt face pocket correctly during ejection. In the grand scheme of things, the bolt face diameter must only be concentric enough to keep from contacting and influencing the chambered cartridge head. Clearance of .010” to .015” is actually a generous tolerance to do so. Air is air, no matter if its .0001” or a mile. This is important as it clearly suggests the irrelevancy of varying amounts of clearance (concentricity error) around the circumference of the cartridge head to the walls of the bolt face. The walls of the bolt face do serve a purpose however, and will contact the cartridge head during the critical task of extracting and ejection of the cartridge. This would suggest that re-cutting the bolt face diameter in an effort to achieve perfect concentricity may prove not only to be unnecessary, but when overdone, could cause adverse effects on your rifle’s extraction and ejection. What about the firing pin you ask? While a perfectly centered firing pin strike to the cartridge primer

June, 2014 Precision Rifleman

The following is a digital rendering of a common 2-lug bolt head. (Note: the extractor is left out of the picture for clarity.) The bolt face diameter; highlighted red, under proper conditions never contacts the cartridge once it is chambered. However, during extraction and ejection of the cartridge, this surface is important. Therefore, unless contact between the bolt face diameter and the chambered cartridge is discovered, it is prudent to leave this diameter as is. is certainly advantageous, an actual positive effect on accuracy may prove difficult to demonstrate. If we are out of center a great deal and the primer mixture is not properly crushed between the firing pin tip and the primer anvil we certainly have a problem, likely misfires. As with just about every other variable with accurate rifles, consistency and repeatability is what is desired. If your firing pin tip resides off center .005”, it will reside there every strike. Should the barrel be attached to the action with such great care, taking pains to achieve a superb fit? Absolutely! But only to achieve the critical perpendicular relationship between the bolt face and the cartridge chamber, not concentricity. Think about it. If the walls of the bolt face diameter do not contact the chambered cartridge head, and the firing pin tip is centered enough to consistently ignite the cartridge primer, what else is there except the bolt face sitting just behind the barrel dead square? Providing these parameters are met, concentricity is really irrelevant. The problem with an improperly chambered barrel

isn’t necessarily run-out per se, but the chamber cut at an angle or out of parallel with the threads and out of square to the barrel extension shoulder. In other words, the chamber could run off of center, (much like a cam), and as long as it is still parallel with the threads and perpendicular to the barrel extension shoulder, it is still feasible to screw it into the action and have a correct perpendicular bolt face behind it. Now before the torches are lit and I’m hunted down for blasphemy, please note that there is no advocacy here of total disregard to indicating the barrel in or any other steps taken to achieve the best run-out possible. This procedure is absolutely critical for anything close to adequate results. The point is that the paramount concern behind the procedure of indicating a barrel for chambering, and blueprinting an action for that matter, is summed up by the relationship between the barrel’s chamber and the bolt face. If the hornet nest isn’t inflamed enough, let us move on to the installation of bushings on the bolt body. This procedure is commonly used to remedy a loose or otherwise sloppy fit bolt in the action. For those readers unfamiliar with this process, typically just behind the front locking lugs and just in front of the bolt handle grooves are turned in the outside diameter of the bolt to accommodate the permanent attachment of bushings. Once attached, usually by some sort of high grade epoxy, the bushings are turned concentric (there’s that word again) to the bolt body and to a size that achieves the desired fit into the action. By now the faithful reader probably anticipates where we’re going with this. Let me guess, you may say, “the fit of the bolt doesn’t matter either, right?” To the contrary. It most certainly does. Once again however, how the fit between the bolt and action affects the critical bolt face surface should be our primary concern. Any rimfire shooter will be able to tell us that the bolt doesn’t have to share a common center line with the action, barrel, or anything else so long as the bolt face, bolt face diameter, and firing pin are correctly

5

The following is another digital rendering of a common 2-lug bolt seated in battery as seen from the barrel extension of the action. The bolt face; highlighted red in this picture, is the only surface of the bolt that will contact the cartridge once it is chambered. Therefore, provided the firing pin is centered enough to produce reliable strikes to the primer, and the two locking lugs are seated equally with full contact to their respected lug seats; maintaining the bolt face surface perfectly square to the chamber is the paramount goal to achieve when blueprinting an action. All geometric concerns should be on creating the bolt face perpendicular to the chamber and providing proper support to hold it square during firing, ie: lapping the lugs. located. We have already discussed the tolerance we have available with the firing pin and with the bolt face diameter clearance to the cartridge. To some degree, attempts to keep the bolt concentric to the action and barrel are basically attempts to prevent these tolerances to begin to stack and get out of hand. Stringent concentricity tolerances really only become necessary as the best means to keep the bolt face square to the chamber, again as a means to an end. The result to strive for when tightening the fit between the bolt and the action it rides in is an attempt to minimize the tilting of the bolt during closing the bolt on a cocked firing pin assembly, particularly when a common angled sear engagement style trigger system is in play. When an angled sear engages a similarly angled cocking piece pressurized rather intensely by the firing pin mainspring, rear bolt lift will certainly occur as well as a slight tilting out of square

a close fitting bolt in an action that closes under spring pressure with a perpendicular bolt face, at least as perpendicular as possible, the short answer is nothing. The focus here is to keep the bolt face square at the instant of cartridge ignition and the subsequent bolt trust. All metal being elastic to some extent and when subjected to large amounts of chamber pressure, if one lug is less supported than the other, that will be the area we have flexing of the bolt head, creating in that instance of time an out of square bolt face. Equally lapped lugs provide the support to prevent this occurrence. Of course any bolt flex will spring back, but the point and the entire premise is to provide a true repeatable surface to secure the cartridge in the barrel chamber, a scenario only obtained with a wellsupported perpendicular bolt face relative to the chamber. Regardless of the literature, tools, order of operations and methodology involved getting it done; this is the desired outcome of blueprinting an action.

of our coveted bolt face. To those who attempt to counter this phenomenon with the clever idea of lapping the lugs with the trigger in and under firing pin spring pressure there is an unkind by-product to consider. You are simply lapping the bolt face out of square! To correct this would involve re-cutting the bolt face with the bolt positioned exactly at the same angle as it would be positioned under pressure from the mainspring. For the typical bolt action, the best means to hold the bolt face captive as perpendicular as possible under firing pin spring pressure is a close fit between the bolt and action. Finally is the lapping of the locking lugs. To be true to form, I would be remiss not to ask the question just how does lapping the locking lugs help obtain the square bolt face we desire? (Allowing this to be a solitary question ignores the occurrence of harmonic vibrations from metal movement and impact, and although pertinent to blueprinting an action, it would prove to be an entire article by itself). Shifflett Wins Berger Cactus Classic

A heartfelt congratulations to all the shooters who made the trip and shot this years Berger Cactus Classic. After hearing of the tough wind conditions, Doug Penttinen quipped it sounded like a kite flying contest. Temperatures were hot by Canada standards; around 21C in the AM and 28C PM. Richard Pollock said it was the biggest turnout in years with lots of Canucks in attendance. Art Clegg & Ed Maxwell deserve high praise for putting on the smoothest run match with a huge turnout and lots of last minute surprises which did not stop until the Classic had concluded. Kudos to the target and score pros too on another awesome job as well as our illustrious Walt Berger for another sumptuous feast. Numbers exceeded 160 each day with three relays as the battle waged on through wind and more wind. Although our Canadian friends were just glad to thaw out from this most dastardly of winters, the high winds and temps tested everyone’s mettle. Tom Libby shares that despite the large groups, the match went as well as it could and makes special note of all the shooting businesses and individual shooters who were so generous in giving their products, gift certificates and money for the shooters this year. It was very much appreciated and he hopes those that won these gifts will send, call or email the people a big thank you. Larry Costa Wins the Shamrock XIII

March 22-23, 2014

We had great weather this year at the Shamrock Shoot in Dublin Georgia. With such mild winds it was hard to tell if the new extended side berm on the left side of the range had much effect. On Sunday it sprinkled for about thirty minutes. Both days were overcast which made the temperature very comfortable at 75 degrees. Saturday’s shooting was very competitive. Terry Leonard won the LV100 with an aggregate of 0.1786”. While Bill Symons had the smallest group of 0.054” but it was not enough to put him in the top ten. Greg Walley won the HV100 with an aggregate of 0.1806”. Greg has not shot in Dublin in many years, so this was a good comeback victory for him. Marc Nachman made the small group of 0.107”. Sunday was Larry Costa’s day. He pulled out as the Two Gun win by placing first in both light (0.1969”) and heavy (0.1789”) varmint at 200 yards. Terry Leonard made the small group for HV200 with 0.130” and Larry Costa made the small group for LV200 with 0.145”. With only 66 competitors this year, the Shamrock Shoot was a very fast paced three relays. One person said that we were keeping his heart rate up. No rain and a good target crew can make all the difference. Our turnaround times were averaging 37 minutes from cease fire to commence fire. Attendance was down some due to the Cactus and Shamrock being only a week apart. Next year we will make sure to have at least two weeks between the two. Shilen Rifles gave Twin Oaks Range a certificate for a free barrel. It was good for a pre-tuned barrel blank in the winner’s choice of contour, caliber, twist and grade of steel. Calibers could range from .17 to .458. This was raffled and won by club member Richard Allen. We had some new faces at the Shamrock Shoot this year including Frank Parker’s granddaughter. This was Cieara’s first big shoot. She had

competed in club level matches many years ago. She shot very respectable groups for a novice benchrest shooter and kept her concentration throughout the match. Sahuaro 1000-Yard Benchrest The weather report for April 12 was calling for winds of 20 to 30 mph for match day. We had a good turn out, and Match Director Extraordinaire, Karl Hunstiger had us pulling triggers by 8:00 AM. There were high overcast clouds and temps were already warming in the morning at 68 degrees; the high for the day was 85 degrees. The wind steadily picked up, but although we didn’t have a wind meter, no one thought it got up to 30 mph. We figured that 20 was about the maximum. Ross Herrick dominated heavy gun, taking both score and aggregate group, while Steve Everson took light gun score and Dale Arenson was able to win for light gun group. Everyone had a great time, How can you not have fun shooting rifles at 1,000 yards with friends? We had the range cleared by noon so that Jim Schmidt of Arizona Ammunition and a group of shooters could take over and test some of their guns at long range. As always, we are looking forward to next month. Desert Sportsman VFS by Keith Myers

April 5, 2014 Murdica & Myers Lead Long Range VFS Shooters from the surrounding states headed to Las Vegas for the 200/300 Long Range Varmint For Score Match at Desert Sportsman’s. Temperatures in the 70’s with stiff winds out of the North played out to be quite challenging when the flags would have the slightest color change. At 200 yards Lou Murdica was still on a roll following the VFS Nationals to take first place. Second went to Sheldon Turf and third was Tom Debacco. Moving out to 300 yards is when the bullets really started to go all different directions. Some shooters taking their first sighter shots ended up with them landing in the record bulls. After all the Mojave dust settled , Keith Myers came out in first place. Lou Murdica was close by with second place and Tom Debacco in third. Congratulations to Lou Murdica for winning the 200/300 aggregate. 200 Yards Lou Murdica..................... 246-4X Sheldon Turf..................... 245-6X Tom Debacco.................... 245-2X Randy Burgess................... 244-4X

Bench Rest Rifle Club of St Louis: Jerry Kloeppel Wins VFS Tom Hencken Wins Hunter Class by Wayne Corley

April 6, 2014 We really had a pleasant day for a match. After the winter we had in this area, everyone was very glad to be at the range. The wind was a little tricky for most of us to get a handle on, as it was changing in velocity so quickly , but as always, several competitors did figure it out. The wind was a generally from the east the entire day and there were no real let ups- just changes in speed. At 200 yards, the mirage was heavy enough that it was difficult to see the scoring lines of the target. We had 22 competitors, several traveled a long distance to attend and we truly do appreciate the good turnout. In the VFS class at 100 yards the winner was Denis Boyet with 250-18X, 2nd was Wayne Corley with 250-17X and 3rd was Ron Hoehn with 250-17X. Denis is a new shooter in his 2nd year and really seems to be catching on! At 200 yards Jerry Kloeppel was the winner with 246-7X, 2nd was Dean Weston with 246-4X and 3rd was Tom Rippee with 2447X. In the grand agg the winner was Jerry Kloeppel with 49619X, 2nd was Dean Weston with 496-13X and 3rd was Tom Rippee with 493-19X. Dean is also a new shooter and doing well. In the Hunter class the 100 yard winner was Tom Hencken with 250-16X, 2nd was Tim Hen-

derson with 249-9X and 3rd was Paul Hon with 248-12X. At 200 yards the winner was Joe Hemkens with 244-4X, 2nd was Tom Hencken with 244-3X and 3rd was Clark Greene with 238-5X. In the grand agg the winner was Tom Hencken with 494-19X, 2nd was Joe Hemkens with 490-14X and 3rd was Tim Henderson with 486-12X. Tim is our first competitor to shoot a 30 BR in Hunter class. Lessons Learned at Tomball’s 4-Gun

The Tomball Gun Club, 12600 Zion Road, hosted the all 100 yard portion of the Tomball 4-Gun match February 22 & 23, 2014. The results were published on pages 4-5 in May’s issue but let’s do a quick summary before moving forward. This year we are lucky to have Dwayne Pullum and Richard Pullum as match directors. They put together an excellent group of people to put on the matches. The all 200 yard portion of the 4-Gun was contested April 5 & 6, 2014. On February 22, 2014 (Saturday) at 9:00 A.M. the Unlimited 5-Shot 100 yard match was held with 38 shooters in attendance. Gene Bukys won the match with a teen aggregate of .1826. Second place with a .2040 aggregate was Dr. Kenneth Terrell. Third place with .2134 aggregate was Vic Smith. Fourth place with .2250 aggregate was Zana Carter. In fifth place with a .2342 aggregate was Jay Lynn Gore. Vic and Zana were shooting bag guns against the rail guns. This was quite an impressive performance from the two of them. Zana Carter shot the small group of the match with a .113. After lunch, the Heavy Varmint 100 yard match was contested. First place went to Joe Duke (of long range fame) with a .2606 aggregate. Second place with a .2690 aggregate was Zana Carter. Third place with a .2804 aggregate was Dr. Kenneth Terrell. Fourth place with a .2808 aggregate was Mike Wickizer. In fifth place with a .2866 was Wendell Rhodes. Joe Duke shot the small group of the match with a .158. Sunday morning, February 23, 2014 at 8:00 A.M. the Sporter 100 yard match was contested with 39 shooters in attendance. Larry Baggett won the match with a teen aggregate of .1870. Second place with a .2308 aggregate was Dickie Pustejovsky. Third place with a .2326 aggregate was John Horn. Fourth place with a .2364 was Gene Bukys. Fourth place with a .2298 was Nick Marino. In fifth place with a .2488 was Larry Saavedra. Zana Carter shot the small group of the match with a .111. Zana Carter shot really well all weekend and beat-up on her husband (Eddie Carter) handily. Did Eddie get revenge at the 200 yard portion of the 4-Gun? On April 5, 2014 (Saturday) at 9:00 A.M. the Unlimited 5-Shot 200 yard match was contested with 34 shooters in attendance. Gene Bukys won the match with a .2542 aggregate. In fifth place with a .3253 aggregate was Dickie Pustejovsky. Congratulation to some fine shooters. To the lesson learned portion of this write-up, I bet Gene Bukys that John Horn would win the 4-Gun. I lost my money! Don’t think I will bet against him again. Thank you Dwayne and Richard Pullum for taking-on the challenges of being match directors for the Tomball Gun Club this year. You two did a really great job and I know that everyone appreciates your efforts. The two matches came off without any major hitches. Jim Lusk did a good job as Range Officer. Felton Corbett is appreciated for measuring the targets for the two matches. Thanks to Ryan for handling the computer duties. Thanks to Zak, Aaron and Joseph for handling the target crew duties. Don’t forget that the Tomball Gun Club will host a VFS/Hunter combined match June 21 & 22, 2014. This will be a 100 & 200 yard match. Hope to have a good turn-out for the matches. Thanks for attending the Tomball 4-Gun match this year. From what I saw, everyone had a great time. Allen Bench Hunter Memorial at Tri-Cities Metallic Silhouette Club by Rick DeGroat March 29, 2014 Washington

It rained all day Friday in the desert of south east Washington and there is one thing you can bet on. If it rains three drops or more, you will have at least three days of wind in the Tri Cities area...and we did. Saturday morning started out with 10 shooters and wind that turned into wind and mirage, which made for some interesting shooting. But that’s what makes it fun (and gives you a reason to drink and swear). Other reasons to drink and swear for some of us were leaving gun parts at home and case separation in the chamber that wouldn’t come out. The top five in each category follow. I want to thank everyone for coming and hope to see you at the next match.

Oak Hill Gun Club: Be Careful What You Ask For by Cecil Peterson

All we asked for was some warm weather and sunshine. Well, we got that but with it came strong switching winds with moments of calm and temperatures in the low 80’s at the end of the match. This is the first week we have not had temperatures sometime during the day of freezing-cold, snow, miserable, cold all winter. Enough whining! Oak Hill Gun Club hosted its first match of the season on April 12, 2014. The regulars were “chomping at the bit” to get some shooting done, although practice time prior to the match had been limited due to weather. We welcomed a new shooter, Wes Johnson, which is always a pleasure and giving us hope our shooting discipline is alive and well. The 100 yard venue was mastered by Larry Caston (Sinclair/Brownell employee) followed by Jerry Wick, Dean Ekstrom, Cecil Peterson and Jerry King. Small group was Dean Ekstrom’s. The 200 yard targets were attacked vigorously and mastered by Dean Ekstrom followed by Jerry Wick, Larry Caston, Bob Cotton, Kenneth Stone, who also got the small group. When all the crying was done about the conditions, we added, divided and then averaged and a winner was declared. Jerry Wick won the Light Varmint Grand Aggregate with his steady shooting. He also had the best score followed by Dean Ekstrom, Larry Caston, Bob Cotton and Kenneth Stone. All the statistics (numbers) are listed for your viewing pleasure. Please review as time permits and bring a friend to the next match.

APRIL 5-6, 2014 We held our second match of the year with 16 shooters who turned out for a cold and windy Saturday. Temps were a low of 41 with high of 60. Sunday was pretty nice; it warmed up quick to 72F. We shot all 200-yards on Saturday and 100-yards on Sunday. Ray Garric shot a screamer with a .087 and this was the smallest group he has ever shot. Congratulations Ray on a very nice group and for fine shooting all weekend! Light Varmint 100-Yards Ray Garric.......................0.2180 Steve Epstein.................... 0.2268

Concentricity Gauge This type of indicator was designed specifically for checking rotating diameters and in fact is exactly the type of gauge used in the machining industry for decades to measure run out; the very thing that we as hand loaders are striving to minimize or eliminate. At 21 Century Shooting it is our goal to modernize an industry that has seen little change over the years. Our concentricity gauge is a perfect example. st

We (at least I) thought he was going to be doing OK as of about a month ago - he was still looking forward to going to the Hog Roast and the Super Shoot. I had visited with him about 3 weeks ago. Then about a week or two ago he started on Hospice. I had talked to him on Thursday but he was pretty doped up and then I received a call this morning from his wife. It was still quite a shock when I got the call. I first met Bud probably in the early 1980’s. He became interested in Benchrest and since about 1987 you would often find the two of us going to matches and loading together. My Dad made him his first bench gun around that time and then Bud got into the gunsmithing business himself. He and I also shared some other common interests. We often got together for coffee throughout the year. He was always good company and I shall miss him.

Regional Director Terry Meyer has scheduled the annual meeting for the North Central Region at Boone Valley Ikes in Webster City, Iowa. On Saturday, July 26-27 they have scheduled a LV/HV match for that weekend. The regional meeting is to begin following the match on Saturday, July 26. Bring your ideas and agenda items to Terry at this time so they can be addressed by the Board in September at the annual Board meeting. If you have any questions, please contact Terry Meyer at 641 425-3397 or you can reach him by email at tdmeyer6ppc@gmail.com.

Mill Creek Match Cancelled

The group match scheduled for October 4-5 at Mill Creek has been canceled due to the NBRSA Nationals ending the Saturday prior.

Yellowstone Rifle Club

Russell Cree has handed the reigns for running benchrest matches over to two other fine gentlemen. Ryan Lienemann and Robert Lunder, both of Billings, will be in charge of matches for the 2014 season and beyond. If you have any questions, their contact info is on page 29.

Three New Clubs to North Central

Starting this year, there are three new clubs to enjoy. The NBRSA proudly welcomes Boone Valley Ikes in Webster City, Iowa, Lincoln Izaak Walton League in Bennet, Nebraska and Holmen Rod & Gun Club from Holmen, Wisconsin. These three clubs focus on score benchrest and you will notice their dates in the 2014 Schedule beginning this month and running through the end of September. Welcome to Boone Valley, Lincoln Izaak Walton & Holmen.

Board Meeting Agenda Items

As mentioned above, it’s not too soon to begin preparing your agenda items for the Board to review at the upcoming annual meeting. Please email items to your regional director now to avoid a last minute crunch. That way, if there are questions, they can be addressed earlier rather than later. Contact information for the regional directors is listed on page 31. Thank you for supporting NBRSA. Election Time is Here! Election ballots will be mailed by June 1. They must be received in the office by July 1st to be counted. I will tabulate them as soon as possible but no later than July 15 and will post the results online and publish them in this magazine. If you have any questions about the voting process or have a recent change of address, please contact me at your earliest convenience. Wanted: Charles Jennings Stocks

Charles Jennings, was NBRSA President in the early 50s and had carved beautiful gunstocks. He died in the ‘60s and his family would like to find and purchase at least one of his stocks. He made stocks for the Zinks & Wilkersons in Tulsa where he was from. If you have one you want to sell, please contact Charles’ daughter, Pam Jennings-Egert at pamegert@earthlink.net.
