Concentricity Gauge This type of indicator was designed specifically for checking rotating diameters and in fact is exactly the type of gauge used in the machining industry for decades to measure run out; the very thing that we as hand loaders are striving to minimize or eliminate. At 21 Century Shooting it is our goal to modernize an industry that has seen little change over the years. Our concentricity gauge is a perfect example. st

This makes it very easy to control feed rate of the cutting operation, generating a very fine turned finish. Not All Good Benchrest Toys Have to be Expensive By Boyd Allen I think that there will always be toys that I cannot afford. It has always been this way and will undoubtedly continue to be so, BUT there are some worthwhile trinkets in our sport that I CAN afford and this article is about some of those. In the box within my reloading kit that houses my smaller tools, I have a companion pair of tools; one that you can buy and the other out of production. It is a Hood bullet puller. It was designed to work in conjunction with a Davidson puller, which grips the bullet and lays flat against the side of the Hood tool so that a plastic chamber that threads into the aluminum body can be rotated to pull a case off of its bullet. If one thinks to hold the assembly bullet up while doing this the powder will stay in the case. This simple bit of cleverness saves taking a carefully set die from its press so that the press can be used with the Davidson puller. It is small yet it does its job perfectly. Perhaps someone will start making them again. Another little piece that came from the Hoods is a caliber specific group checker that takes up about the same space as a credit card. Printed on a sheet of clear plastic are four lines that form tapered gaps that are used to span the largest width of a group. They are marked in tenth intervals, along the tapers, so that one can do an amazingly close job of estimating the size of a group. What this allows one to do is to take a quick survey of test groups, or at a match where you might think that your record target may have been incorrectly marked, It can
be easily checked without removing it from the “wailing wall”. Alas, I only bought one in 6mm. Hindsight being what it is, I cannot understand why I did not buy them all. Leaving the out of production for a moment let me mention a couple that may be new to you. Although David Tubb is quite well known, his fame has not been earned at the bench. Nevertheless, one of his new products may find some good use there. He has changed the design of striker springs for the better, by using two wound in opposite directions end to end. This has the effect of cancelling out the rotation that a single spring must make as it is compressed (and released) which the video on his site shows as a cause of the bolt handle jiggle that we sometimes see when an action is dry fired on an empty chamber. In the video on his website, www.davidtubb. com, he demonstrates the action of two Remington bolts, one with a standard spring that jiggles visibly when dry fired and the other with his springs that does not. The other remarkable thing about his springs is that even though they are rated at 25# cocked, the effort required to cock the action is noticeably reduced. He makes these springs for Remingtons (long and short) and Winchesters. Since my Viper is very similar to a short action Remington insofar as the striker assembly is concerned (as are Pandas, and perhaps others) I bought a set and can report that if only for the improvement in lift alone, they are worth the price ($20+shipping). Perhaps because I shoot a left bolt and the direction that the spring is wound does not
tend to produce jiggle when used in that configuration, I do not remember having jiggle issues, but as I said the lift improvement alone is easily worth the price. A friend who has a pair of Pandas found the same was true for his actions, despite the fact that the Tubb springs tested slightly heavier than his stock springs. The final item is some new hearing protection that plainly looks
more than a bit strange and as if it would not be effective, but its differences are why I like it. Rated at what seems to be an optimistic 31 db, the SensGard ZEM SG-31 Hearing Protection “device” (It cannot be called muffs because it does not cover the ears, or plugs because it does not go in the ear canal,) has two tubular chambers that run up the sides of the head and which are connected by a band across the top of the head. At the bottom ends of the tubes, they are at a right angle to the rest of the tube, and on that short part, are foam collars that are designed to form a seal at the outer perimeter of the ear canal. There are small openings at the top of the tubes that allow
July, 2014 Precision Rifleman
one to hear well enough to easily carry on a conversation, while the shape and volume of the tubes create a resonant chamber that tends to reduce the volume of loud sounds by their rated attenuation. The whole thing folds to a compact size and the cost is quite competitive. You will find them on Amazon. Recently I took mine to the range, which was totally deserted, so I did not have the opportunity to try them for hot firing line conversation, I used them while shooting a 20.5 barreled 6PPC and found them to be quite satisfactory, if not quite as quiet as I would have expected given their rating. In two respects, however, they did shine, earning a permanent place in my range kit. I tend to be a bit noise sensitive. Not so much that I am startled or pained by sound through hearing protection, but enough to spoil my concentration when trying to shoot very small groups. For this reason I tend toward double protection, foam plugs and muffs, the latter usually shotgun equivalent. This works, but in warm weather I do not like the sweaty muffs and ears that result. Using the SensGard over my usual Howard Leight MAX foam plugs, things were quieter than with my normal setup and even though the afternoon got up into the mid 80s, my ears did not become uncomfortable or sweaty. The breeze that I was trying to shoot in was keeping my head cool as well. Beyond this, I am doing some prototype testing for the manufacturer and expect that the design will see some continued small improvement in the area of its foam ear seals and chamber design. While it works well as is, better is always...well, better.

Council Bluffs Mid-State Rivalry
Mike Bigelow was the overall winner of the inaugural Mid-State Rivalry Heavy Varmint Group and Varmint for Score match hosted by the Council Bluffs Rifle and Pistol Club April 26-27, 2014. Dave Brooks took first place in the Heavy Varmint 100-yard group match held Saturday with a .3538 aggregate on a day when shooters were plagued by fast-switching winds gusting to 30 mph. Second place went to Don Crunk with a .3708, and Jon Leu took thirdplace honors with a .3734. Larry Caston had small group at 100 yards with a fine .140. In the 200-yard Heavy Varmint group match, first place went to Mike Bigelow with a .5053 aggregate. Second place went to Mike Shapoval with a .5196, and Ron Miller was third with a .5316. Dave Brooks’ .522 won the small-group award for 200 yards. When the yardages were tallied, Mike Bigelow was the Heavy Varmint Grand Aggregate winner with a .4588, besting 16 other shooters. Second place in the grand went to Dave Brooks with a .4663, and third place went to Mike Shapoval with a .4794. Rounding out
the top five in the Grand Aggregate were Jon Leu in fourth place with a .4999 and Sam Langhofer with a .5163. Zach Miller earned the trophy for top junior shooter with a .9426 grand. Those who returned on Sunday for the Varmint for Score match were greeted by the same strong, fast-switching wind along with cool temperatures and rain. On a range that’s never easy, conditions were especially tricky. Dave Brooks earned the first-place trophy at 100 yards with a fine 250-14X. Second place went to Mike Shapoval with a 250-12X total, and Ronnie Berg was in third place with 250-11X. When the targets were moved out to 200 yards, Mike Bigelow showed that experience counts, besting the field of 12 shooters with a 250-5X. Chet Whitebread was second at 200 yards with a 249-3X, and Jeff Shultz was third with a 247-6X. Mike Bigelow’s first-place finish at 200 yards, coupled with a fifth-place 249-11X tally at 100 yards earned him the first place trophy in the Varmint for Score Grand Aggregate with a 49916X total in tough conditions. Second place in the Grand Aggregate went to
Chet Whitebread with a 498-14X total, and Ronnie Berg was third with a 49615X total. Rounding out the top five in the Varmint for Score grand were Jeff Shultz in fourth with a 495-18X and Dave Brooks at 495-17X. The trophy for top junior shooter in the Varmint for Score Grand Aggregate again went to Zach Miller with a 477-13X total. The picture features from left to right Dave Brooks, Chet Whitebread, Mike Shapoval, Ronnie Berg, Mike Bigelow and Zach Miller. Bob Hammack Rides the Wind & Wins the 2-Gun By Scott Pieper, Match Director, St Louis Benchrest Rifle Club The forecast was typical for St Louis in April; it was beautiful and windy on Saturday, cold, wet and swirling tail winds for Sunday. Twenty-one shooters for Saturday and 20 for Sunday braved the wind to compete in the first annual Memorial Match. We had cancelled the first match of the year in early March due to snow and ice, so we moved the Terry Hall Memorial to this match date. Terry was a great benchrest shooter and friend to all that have shot with him. We lost Terry last year early in the season and have missed him dearly at the matches. With the beginning of the 2014 season here at BRRC, we will be holding an annual memorial match each season and honoring the winners on a perpetual memorial plaque in the clubhouse at the range. The first inductee will be Bob Hammack winning the Terry Hall memorial match, Bob was able to scope out the shifting tail wind and show us all his wind reading superiority to take the 2-gun title with a .2925 grand aggregate. Bob Hammack won the LV100 with a .2982” aggregate and Jim Hart shot the small group with a .180”. After the switch to HV100, Wayne Corley took the win with a .2504” aggregate and also won the small group with a .151”. Sunday was cool with a thunderstorm delaying the start but it brought calm winds for the first three matches. After this the winds became ridiculous and more than one seasoned veteran got stumped. Bob Hammack won the HV 200 with a .1952” aggregate and hammered a .289” for small group. Jim Hart was the master of the LV class with a 200 yard aggregate of .3391” and Joe Fesi got the small group at .364”. Jim was also the grand aggregate winner followed by Bob Hammack in second and Tom Rippee third. HV grand aggregate winner was Bob Hammack with Keith Christianson in second and Chuck Hearn third. The 2-Gun went to Bob Hammack, with Tom Rippee second, Jim Hart third, Larry Scharnhorst fourth and Joe Fesi in fifth. Another great match here at BRRC with a great group of
friends, I sure do appreciate everyone coming out and supporting benchrest shooting here in St Louis. “The wind is your FRIEND!” Light Varmint 100-Yards Bob Hammack...................0.2982 Larry Scharnhorst............... 0.3068 Jim Hart.......................... 0.3170 Dave Coots....................... 0.3296 Tom Rippee...................... 0.3298 Ron Hoehn........................ 0.3308 Jim Gardner..................... 0.3352 Steve Turner..................... 0.3524 Dave Brooks...................... 0.3726 Jerry Kloeppel................... 0.3784 Chuck Hearn..................... 0.3824 Joe Fesi........................... 0.3856 Keith Christianson.............. 0.4126 Bud Mundy....................... 0.4232 Scott Pieper...................... 0.4680 Wayne Corley.................... 0.4936 Harry Ward....................... 0.4948 John Ross......................... 0.5058 Dennis Boyet..................... 0.5668 Dean Weston..................... 0.6906 Light Varmint 200-Yards Jim Hart..........................0.3391 Tom Rippee...................... 0.3465 Dave Coots....................... 0.3679 Bob Hammack................... 0.3689 Joe Fesi........................... 0.3890 Larry Scharnhorst............... 0.4094 Chuck Hearn..................... 0.4134 Ron Hoehn........................ 0.4254 Jerry Kloeppel................... 0.4715 Dean Weston..................... 0.5110 Bud Mundy....................... 0.5144 Jim Gardner..................... 0.5485 Steve Turner..................... 0.5487 Harry Ward....................... 0.5624 Dave Brooks...................... 0.5661 Wayne Corley.................... 0.6257 Keith Christianson.............. 0.6316 Dennis Boyet..................... 0.6711 John Ross......................... 0.6725 Scott Pieper...................... 0.7540 Light Varmint Grand Aggregate Jim Hart..........................0.3280 Bob Hammack................... 0.3335 Tom Rippee...................... 0.3381 Dave Coots....................... 0.3487 Larry Scharnhorst............... 0.3581 Ron Hoehn........................ 0.3781 Joe Fesi........................... 0.3873

Lots of Sun & Fun at the Spring Tune-Up By Jack Neary, Eastern Region Director WWCCA, April 12-13, 2014 Twenty-eight benchrest shooters arrived at the Western Wayne Conservation Club this past weekend to take advantage of the unseasonably warm 70+ degree sunny weather to participate and enjoy our first group benchrest match of 2014 in the NBRSA Eastern Region. After an extremely long winter, everyone was quite anxious to get back together and enjoy some great camaraderie and very good regional competition. As we initiated last year, our Eastern Region team will continue our Shooter Loyalty program this year; whereby at the end of each match during the awards ceremony, we will conduct a drawing give-a-way for a certificate good for (1) match fee to be redeemed at any NBRSA Easter Region Group match within the following 12 months to a lucky winner! This year we have expanded our Shooter Loyalty program; whereby we have implemented a new “Match Attendance” incentive program where shooters who attend a minimum of (5) NBRSA Eastern Region group matches
in 2014 will each earn a ticket for each match they attend (extra bonus tickets earned for attending 8 or more ER matches!) for a prize drawing at our annual NBRSA Easter Region meeting in November for their chance to earn a BAT action and other top benchrest related shooting prizes! (More details of this exciting program to follow….) Don Rosette arrived with his freshly cut $800 dollar almost-perfect spring haircut. (Eddy Munster lives on!) Our Canadian friends, including Dave Holmes, Peter Smith, Dave Abbott and George and Vera Carter arrived ensuring some great laughs and some fine shooting. It was also great to have a new shooter, Butch Lipscomb, whom was attending his first match, win several small group cash option awards and finish 15th overall in the 2-Gun! Very good shooting Butch! Way to go! Saturday morning met some typical WWCCA switchy conditions, but the sun was out and Jeff Gaidos showed some great shooting form in winning the Light Varmint aggregate with a fine .2132” aggregate.

After a great lunch, Saturday afternoon brought more great sunny weather and light winds for all to enjoy with some very good shooting in the HV100 by George Carter, Ted Heindselman, Jeff Gaidos and Vic Potts with very good aggregates. After everyone re-set their wind flags to their 200 yard benches, we all enjoyed a fantastic steak roast the WWCCA club hosts at each match. More great times and good food were enjoyed by everyone! Sunday morning brought more sunshine and warm 70+ degree weather. Mild winds greeted all shooters for the start of the Heavy Varmint 200 yard aggregate. Joe Krupa, George Carter, Peter Smith and Jeff Gaidos each shot some very good aggregates for the HV200 agg. After another great lunch, we started our last aggregate of the match, the LV200 yard aggregate. Winds and a very brief shower greeted everyone for the LV200. Don Rossette shooting Joe Krupa’s rifle (don’t ask…) showed why he’s one of the best in our region with his first place finish. Dave Holmes, myself, Jeff Gaidos and the lovely Vera Carter rounding the top five finishes. With the dust now settled after the LV200 yard aggregate, the Top 20 results of the 2-Gun were calculated. All the results follow. I would like to personally thank Dana Raven and Bill Gammon for directing and organizing this match, Connie Wyatt for her scoring the many targets, Brook Raven and Wayne for all their tireless efforts in placing and changing countless targets, and a special thanks to all the shooters whom attended this match! Looking forward to another great year with the shooters in the NBRSA Eastern Region! Oh Canada! Rogue Valley 600-Yard Benchrest By John Crawford & Audrey Brown Here are the results for the March 16, 2014 match from Rogue Valley in White City, Oregon. Canada Cummins was the overall match winner. We had a nice little turnout with ten shooters and some small groups were shot as well. The brothers Johnston (Bill & John) were trading one gun back and forth, which is why the scores for these fine shooters may look a little wacky. Canada has been shooting lights-out this year; winning the 600-Yard Long Range Nationals LG Group with a 6-target aggregate of 3.142”. Congratulations to Canada, Bill Johnston’s daughter. When it comes to long range benchrest, it looks like the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. Special thank you to Gary Whipple of Whips Crushing who provided us all our trophy sponsorship. Richard Duncan is Grand Champion at the 2014 Long Range Nationals By Craig St Claire, Match Director, Sloughhouse Long Range Benchrest Club & Audrey Brown The Sloughhouse Benchrest Shooters hosted the 2014 NBRSA 600 and 1000Yard National Championships April 23-27, 2014. The match was shot in generally good conditions at the Sacramento Valley Shooting Center. Richard Duncan was this year’s Grand Champion and winner of the 1000yard nationals finishing 8 points ahead of past Champ Richard Schatz. Bill Johnston set three possible 1000Yard heavy gun group records during the course of the match. Jim O’Connell reports the sponsors were very generous again this year. Jim notes: “I think the big raffle winner this year was Bill Hubina who won a Nightforce scope and a BAT action.” Terry Balding shares, “this years Long Range Nationals was the most challenging one I have attended. Switching winds took their toll on many shooters. Shots off target were common. The one condition that was new to me was
the changing light condition. When the sunlight changed at 1,000 yards shots would go 12” higher or lower.” In the 600-yard Nationals, Steven Raeder edged runner-up Wayne Courand for first place. When asked about his win, Steven Raeder says, “We all have our own methods for approaching long range shooting...all of which can be successful given the various conditions. I try to be aware & remember to be patient, then I relax & enjoy. Thanks to Mike Sosenko & Gary Ocock who built the rifle. The barrel was chambered & fitted by M. Soulie, owner of Spartan Precision. The day finished off nicely with a great BBQ. I would like to give a special thank you to Gary Childs for his help with target measuring and our scorekeepers, Jim O’Connell and Andrew Livinggood. Also to stalwart Bob Dorton for his hard work as well as Dick Colyar, Mike Mounov, Ron Chisick,
Dan Roberson, Ken Schroeder, Bruce Bangeman and Larry Kahle. Without these guys the event just would not be. Congratulations to all the winners and thank you for your support of the Sloughhouse Benchrest Shooters. 1000-Yard Nationals Two-Gun & Grand Champion Richard Duncan....................13 Richard Schatz...................... 21 Billy Copelin........................ 25 Bruce Bangeman................... 25 Robert Hoppe....................... 28 Shawn Greene...................... 30 Bill Johnston........................ 34 Greg Wilson......................... 37 Canada Cummins................... 41 Peter White......................... 44 Light Gun Group Richard Schatz...................5.352 Canada Cummins................. 6.101 Billy Copelin...................... 6.336 Greg Wilson....................... 6.939 Robert Hoppe..................... 6.951 Richard Duncan................... 7.479 Bruce Bangeman................. 7.505 Richard Sulffridge................ 7.553 Bill Johnston...................... 7.659 Shawn Greene.................... 7.667 Light Gun Score Billy Copelin.....................269-2X Richard Duncan.................. 268-5X Shawn Greene................... 268-4X Peter White...................... 265-2X

A Grand Champion Chat In corresponding with Rick Duncan about his shooting background, here’s what he shared with us...

Precision Rifleman
When did you start shooting? My first long-range match was in 2002. I shot the 1K Nationals that same year. What got you interested in long range & do you shoot other disciplines too? Prior to 2002, I only shot locally at the 100 yard range for fun. I always tried to shoot small groups with the rifle(s) I had but no formal matches. I had a couple of shooting friends that started to get into long range, multiple distance, pseudo-tactical matches. I built a multi-purpose rifle thinking I would get into that with them. I tried it once, wasn’t all that crazy about laying down in the dirt or mud. That’s when I transitioned into long range benchrest. What was your strategy in winning this years’ Long Range Nationals? I didn’t really have a strategy per se, other than trying to shoot small groups in the middle of the target. Did you do anything differently this year from former years? I did make more scope adjustments and held center more this year than previously. I used to hold off more; not really sure what I was doing while I was doing it though. Last year, I had
attended a long range wind reading class. The coaches were pointing out this is a half minute wind, hold here or one minute hold there, etc. Had one of those “light bulbs going off” moments after that. While I’ve always watched the wind flags and tried to shoot in what appeared to be the same condition(s) as the sighters, this year I was able to dial in/out windage as I thought appropriate for the changing conditions. None of my groups were especially spectacular, but they were consistently centered pretty well which kept my score up. Did you change your equipment? Normally I shoot a 56# heavy gun. I had rotator cuff surgery (other shoulder) a couple months ago and thought I should take it easy on the shoulder. So, I have a heavy 6mm Dasher barrel that Jay Cutright chambered up for me a couple years ago. I put that on one of my light guns and shot it in the heavy gun. Jay also re-chambered the 6mm BR barrel I had on my other light gun into a 6mm Dasher as well. Fortunately, both barrels seem to shoot the same load pretty well. How did you choose your equipment?
Some of my equipment was sort of chosen for me. I won a stock gift certificate from McMillan one year - that became the basis for the heavy gun I shot. I won a discount on the Barnard action I used in the light gun another year. Jay Cutright had donated a chamber job a couple years ago and that was the barrel I shot for the heavy gun. Did you practice much before the event? I practiced while fire-forming my brass. I didn’t have enough Dasher brass formed to shoot both rifles without reloading the cases. I prefer to have everything pre-loaded, I didn’t want to have to do that at night during the match. I did go to Sacramento and shoot on the public 300 yard range when shooting some of the cases for the second time. Did you have any mentors? if so, who and what helped you? I have a lot of online mentors. I read the various gun forums, though mostly Accurate Shooter. I read what everyone has to say. I take bits and pieces and use what I think will help me. What would you say to someone who
July, 2014 Precision Rifleman asked you about long range shooting? I enjoy long range shooting. There’s a lot of little things that all add up to shooting accurately at long distances. Consistency is key. Pretty much everything I do loading and shooting/gun handling wise is geared towards improving it. Lewis-Clark Wildlife Club’s Hunter/VFS Matches By Paul Gylling, Match Director March 30, 2014 Lewis-Clark Wildlife Club hosted the first registered match of 2014 on March 30th. This was a varmint for score match that saw twelve competitors from Washington, Idaho and Montana. We had a wide range of shooter experience, from firsttime shooters to old hands at the range. We were very pleased that the new shooters had come to the match and hopefully they will get the bug and continue to come and compete. Conditions for the day included everything you could imagine from calm, completely overcast, rain, bright sunshine, switchy winds, scattered clouds, as is often stated in this part of the country (as in others I am sure) that if you don’t like the weather wait 10 minutes and it will change, this was the case for this day.
In the 100 yard match, four shooters scored 250’s. The winners were Glenn Sampson, followed by Dick Mayer and Paul Gylling. At 200 yards, first place was Dick Mayer, second was Paul Gylling and third was Glenn Sampson. The 100-200 Agg winners were Dick Mayer in first, followed by Paul Gylling and third was Glenn Sampson. I want to give a very large thank you to Rick Brigham for setting the target boards and changing targets and to all the individuals that showed up to shoot the match. 100-Yards Glenn Sampson................ 250-17x Dick Mayer...................... 250-16x Paul Gylling..................... 250-16x Tim Tucker...................... 250-13x Jim McConnell.................. 249-15x John Germann.................. 249-13x Larry Tucker ..................... 249-8x

This was a hunter benchrest match with eleven competitors from Washington and Montana. Early in the day the weather was fine for shooting. As the day progressed, the conditions went to H-E- double toothpicks as the scores showed. In the 100 yard match, four shooters scored 250’s. The winners were Glenn Sampson in first, second place was Jim McConnell and third was Sam Small. At 200 yards first place Sam Small, second was Jeff Jetter and third was Glenn Sampson. The 100-200 agg winners were Sam Small in first, second place was Jeff Jetter and in third Glenn Sampson. The results are posted below. Mill Creek April Score Match by Ron Shultz April 5-6, 2014 was a warm and windy weekend with a large benefit pistol match for Kansas Special Olympics. There were over 250 people in the area and this made for a lot of traffic and lots of dust. Sunday brought heavy skies with the threat of storms and more hard wind. The rain held off until match 5 at 3pm. We waited it out, put up dry targets and finished. The scores tell the whole story. Chris Ross Passed Away
Chris Ross has passed away after a long illness. Chris was a regular at the Tacoma Rifle and Revolver Club benchrest competitions. He was a fierce competitor and was best remembered for the number of times he would shoot his sighter target. He traveled some to St. Louis, Phoenix, etc, where he met and befriended many fellow shooters. Chris loved to cross country ski, fly fish, hunt, and really loved benchrest. He was my good friend and also a friend to many other shooters. Please say a prayer for his surviving family and to his loving wife Sherry who was by his side to the end. He can now be at peace. --Bruce Andrews
