2015-2016 ANNUAL ATHLETIC REPORT
Message from Athletic Director
///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
On behalf of our entire Blue Hose Athletic Department, I want to say thank you for your continued support and generosity to PC Athletics. Our number one goal is to have outstanding athletic programs that are competitive without jeopardizing PC’s rich academic history and reputation. As we start our fifth year as the smallest school in NCAA Division I (FCS), we are starting to see sustained success at this level. This success is both academic and athletic. As you review the 2016 annual athletic report, you will see the outstanding accomplishments our student-athletes are achieving in the classroom, as well as on the fields and courts of play. After the 2016 spring semester, 65 percent of our student-athletes achieved a 3.00 GPA or better, and our team GPA average was a 3.293. Since Fall 2010, our average team GPA has exceeded a 3.00 GPA (12 straight semesters). Our student-athletes and coaches take great pride in their academic success. As we all know, PC is a rigorous institution with no place to hide academically. Athletically, we are making great strides in both competitiveness and recruiting Division I caliber student-athletes. This success is fueled by PC’s academic and athletic reputation. We truly are the total package. This annual report serves as a snapshot of the last 12 months of Blue Hose Athletics. The success that you see in the following pages, and watch in the future, involves everyone--student-athletes, coaches, support staff, administration, very generous donors, and all of our Blue Hose fans. Once again, on behalf of all our coaches, staff, and student-athletes, thank you very much. Your continued support and generosity makes a difference with PC Athletics. GO Hose!
Brian P. Reese Director of Athletics

thomas valente
///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
When asked why he chose to come to Presbyterian College, Thomas Valente ’16 said, “Before college, I had two plans, one to go on to medical school and the other to play Division I soccer. PC gave me both.” Valente graduated just weeks ago with the class of 2016, and his resume indicates that his time at PC helped him achieve these goals. As a member of the men’s soccer team for all four years of college, Valente appeared in 22 games for the Blue Hose with nine starts. He was also named co-captain of the team for the 2015 season and was awarded the Christenberry Award for Academic Excellence by the Big South Conference. Moreover, Valente was honored as the Valedictorian of the class of 2016, having majored in applied mathematics at PC. His achievements in the classroom earned him a full scholarship to medical school at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). “Balancing athletics and academics was my biggest challenge. Preparing myself for medical school and my body for sports was a lot of work,” Valente said. “However, the community at PC was phenomenal.”
As a Division I athlete, Valente devoted 20 plus hours a week to soccer practices, games, conditioning, and weights. “Soccer was pretty much a part-time job, but I had my teammates,” he said. “My soccer team was like my family. The athletic training and sports medicine staff helped me a lot, and Brian Reese, the athletic director, was super supportive. We had a great relationship.” Beyond his responsibilities as a soccer player, Valente noted how he spent hours in the library trying to get his work done, saying, “PC is no walk in the park with the rigor of the coursework. However, the math department was amazing. Dr. Doug Daniels, my advisor, really pushed me and guided me. People in the math department pushed me to be the best student I could be and taught me to think for myself.” Valente will begin school at MUSC in the fall and feels that he is prepared to do so thanks to his time at PC: “PC was a really accepting community within the athletic department and across the whole campus. Building a community with my professors is something I will always remember and cherish. PC really prepared me on both ends for my passions.”

Jordan ashley
//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
Nothing epitomized the term “student-athlete” quite like Presbyterian College graduate Jordan Ashley from Abbeville, S.C. As an athlete, she was a catcher for the softball team that played over 50 games a season, not including the postseason tournaments. As a student, she was the Yearbook editor, a member of Sigma Sigma Sigma, a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) on campus (having served as president), and served on the conference and national level. “I give credit to my coach for putting me up for the role as a freshman, a role that has had an incredible impact on my life,” said Jordan. For Jordan, serving as president of the SAAC at Presbyterian College was extremely rewarding. One reason she enjoyed the role was that it allowed her to be the voice for student athletes. Jordan became a national SAAC member in the summer of 2014, after becoming the Vice President of the Big South conference SAAC. She attended her first National SAAC meeting that summer and was elected to serve on the Administration
Cabinet to become the only student-athlete representative in the cabinet. “I was honored to be a part of this integral decision-making body. When this position was described to me I knew that is where my passion would lie. I was nominated and gave a speech in front of the National SAAC and was voted on by my peers.” Jordan attended the more recent National SAAC conference in San Antonio, Texas. At this conference Jordan did more than representing PC, she represented the entire Big South Conference.

Aianna Kelly
///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
From Newport News, Va., Aianna Kelly, a senior business administration major, has made a great impact on the women’s basketball team since she joined as a freshman in 2013. Kelly chose PC for both its academic reputation and its Division I basketball. As a freshman, Kelly started off strong, making her collegiate debut in a game against Georgia where she earned four rebounds and scored two points. She soon made her collegiate start against N.C. State. She played in all 31 games her freshmen year and started in 24, leading the freshmen with 6.2 points and 4.9 rebounds per game. Kelly continued to make her mark on the court. She tied for team lead in assists and paced the Blue Hose in steals. She led PC in assists 11 times and in steals 16 times. Her first career double-double, with 11 points and 16 rebounds, was in a 45-minute overtime game against Coastal Carolina. In her sophomore year, Kelly also played in all 31 games and started in 29 as a guard. She averaged 6.5 points per game and achieved a team-high record of 6.1 rebounds
per game. She also led PC in scoring three times, in rebounds 10 times, assists 10 times, and steals nine times. Her average play time was 28.8 minutes per game. Kelly had many other notable achievements in her sophomore year, such as shooting a team-best 79.1 percent from the free-throw line; setting a career-best with 15 points against Liberty; earning a season-high 14 points and seven rebounds against UNC Asheville; and leading the team in scoring for the first time in her career with 12 points against VCU. Also in her sophomore year, Kelly ranked in the top 20 in the Big South Conference. She was ranked 15th in overall scoring, eighth in assist/turnover ratio (fifth in the Big South-only competition), and 15th in defensive rebounds. In her junior year, Kelly has been responsible both on and off the court. She served as a student-athlete academic representative and a leader and captain of the women’s basketball team.

Dear Alumni and Friends, Word is spreading – it is a great time to be a part of Blue Hose Athletics. As you have seen in earlier sections of this report, our studentathletes are excelling on the fields and courts of competition while maintaining excellence in the classroom. Our coaches are recruiting top tier scholar athletes from the southeast and across the nation. And those students, in turn, are training harder than ever before, adopting the mentality of now is the time. We are no longer in the transitional stages; we are Division I. The same can be said for Presbyterian College fundraising. In 2015-2016, thanks to 1,494 alumni and 1,247 friends of the College, we raised more than $5.7 million—a truly remarkable number for our small school. Athletically, we’ve inaugurated a Scotsman Club Board of Directors, renovated the Kemper D. Lake Sports Medicine Facility and added the Justin Bethel Hydrotherapy Center, increased Scotsman Club contributions, enhanced sport specific funding, established new scholarship endowments, and created the Victory Fund to give our student-athletes the best Division I experience we can. I can’t wait to see what 2017 has in store! One thing is obvious: Blue Hose faithful are strong in their dedication to support PC athletics. Without you to support our student-athletes, coaches and administrators, the progress we’ve made in Division I would not have been possible. If you are not currently a Scotsman Club donor, I urge you to join the Scotsman Club at whatever level you can and support the achievements of our men and women in the garnet and blue, as we continue in this new era of Presbyterian College athletics. On behalf of our staff, coaches, and studentathletes, I would like to thank you for your generous support and Go Blue Hose! Sincerely, Matt Cain Assistant Athletic Director for Development
Rechartered in 2015, the Scotsman Club Board of Directors, under the leadership of President Steve Churm ’78, is charged with maintaining the relationship between alumni and friends of PC with College administration. The group, currently 20 members strong, is comprised of all age demographics and includes both non-athletes and former athletes of all varsity athletic teams. These faithful Blue Hose are the alumni’s voices to the Athletic Director and other members of the athletic department and administration.

Board of Directors
Honorary Captains Bob Stock For more than 45 years, PC has had the pleasure of including Bob Strock as a member of the Blue Hose family. Prior to joining the PC football coaching staff, Bob, a graduate of nearby Erskine, was a successful high school coach and athletic director at both Clinton and Walterboro High Schools. Bob’s win-loss record still ranks among the most successful in PC history. In addition to his 18 years on the sideline, Bob also served as the Chair of the PE department from 1975 until his retirement in 1997. In recognition of Bob’s impact on student-athletes, in 2001 a group of his former players established the Coach Bob Strock Athletic Scholarship which awards financial aid to a worthy PC athlete annually. In 2001, the College recognized Bob as official Blue Hose for life, awarding him the first “Honorary Alumnus Award.”
Steve Churm Steve Churm ’78, the 2010 Mary F. Lehman Alumni Service Award winner, is a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. Steve was a four-time letterman and captain of the PC men’s golf team, as well as three-year letterman at offensive guard. His senior year, Steve was selected as NAIA all-district and honorable mention All-American in football. Upon graduation, Steve was commissioned in the US Army and was awarded the Bronze Star in Operation Desert Storm. He retired in 1998, achieving the rank of Major and continues service today as the Director of Operations for Athena Technology Group providing engineering support to the US Army. Steve and Alison ’81 , are proud parents of Anna Brooks ’08 and Will ’11.
John Stroud John Stroud ’76 is a member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. John was an integral part of both football and basketball teams, having served as a student athletic trainer. Currently, John is President and CEO of O’Dell Corporation in Greenwood and a current Presbyterian College Trustee. John and his wife, Ferol, are significant supporters of all aspects of Blue Hose athletics. In addition to being annual contributors to the Scotsman Club, they created the John and Ferol Stroud Scholarship Fund, awarded to a deserving football player yearly, and contributed to the renovations to the athletic training facility and the weight room.
Stan Reid Stan Reid ’74 graduated cum laude with a degree in pre-medicine and lettered for three years in football and track. Stan was a member of the Sigma Kappa Alpha Academic Honor Society and the Blue Key National Honorary Leadership Fraternity and was a Joseph Graham Miller Academic-Athletic Achievement Award recipient. Stan additionally served on the Student Government Association, the Judicial Council, and as the Battalion Commander with PC ROTC. In 2014, Stan completed a Master of Divinity degree from Princeton Theological Seminary. Stan and his wife, Tricia, are members of the William Plumer Jacobs Society and are yearly members in the Scotsman Club. Through his generous time and his continuous giving, Stan has been an outstanding example of leadership in the Scotsman Club.
Invitational ///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
Over the last 16 years, the Scotsman Club Invitational has raised over a quarter of a million dollars in student-athletic scholarships. A big thank you to all who joined us and sponsored the 2016 Scotsman Club Invitational to support our student-athletes. We hope to see you next year for the 2017 Scotsman Club Invitational at Musgrove Mill Golf Club, ranked second in the Upstate according to the SC Golf Panel.
With your help, we raised $29,679 in 2016 for our Blue Hose student-athletes!
BETHEL HYDROTHERAPY FACILITY /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// On June 25, Presbyterian College held a ribbon cutting ceremony officially opening its new Bethel Hydrotherapy Facility as an addition to the college’s Kemper D. Lake Sports Medicine Center. “The gift Justin provided is an absolute game-changer for us,” said Brian Reese, director of athletics. “We will now have one of the finest sports medicine facilities in the Big South. Justin’s gift will have a substantial sports performance impact for all of our student-athletes in all of our sports. The entire athletic department is extremely grateful for his generosity.” The hydrotherapy facility will impact all current and future student-athletes at PC. It features two state-of-the-art Cryotherm hydrotherapy tanks, which will speed up recovery and enhance performance. The additional space allows PC’s staff of athletic trainers and team physicians to continue their sports medicine services in a more efficient and functional facility. Also included in the renovation was a contribution from the William T. Johnson estate. Thanks to Johnson’s generous planned gift, the functional rehabilitation portion of the Lake Sports Medicine Center will bear a plaque with Johnson and his wife’s (Louise) name. “This is an exciting day for Presbyterian College athletics,” said Nelson Jones, associate athletic director of sports medicine at the college. “As a sports medicine staff, we would like to express our sincere gratitude to Justin and his family, as well as the William T. Johnson estate, for making this project possible.” The hydrotherapy facility is named for Justin Bethel, a 2012 PC graduate and cornerback for the Arizona Cardinals. Bethel has completed four seasons in the National Football League and has been elected to play in the Pro Bowl for three consecutive years. “This facility will be a huge benefit to all of our student-athletes,” said Harold Nichols ‘89, head football coach. “This generous gift will impact all of our athletes, improving performance, injury rehabilitation, and recovery.” Bethel is the ninth player ever drafted to the NFL out of PC and the first since Dan Eckstein was drafted in 1969 by the Green Bay Packers. “We thank Justin and his family, and we are very proud of him,” Nichols said.
Justin Bethel and family
“I know Justin and his family understand the commitment it takes to be the very best on the field and in the classroom. This gift shows his appreciation for his experience here at PC and all the people that helped him get to where he is today. Justin has a huge heart and is very humble, qualities that help him to this day.” - Head Coach Harold Nichols ‘89
Why support?
///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
Why support the Scotsman Club? The Scotsman Club ensures Blue Hose student-athletes receive a worldclass college education. Our student-athletes leave PC with a solid foundation – well prepared for the life ahead of them. This is only possible with help from Scotsman Club supporters like you – alumni, parents, and friends of the College. All Scotsman Club gifts go to offset the cost of financial aid/scholarships for our athletes. Scotsman Club dollars assist in addressing important needs in the athletic department. Donors at certain levels to the Scotsman Club receive various benefits ranging from invitations to Scotsman Club events to designated parking for football games. Why support the Victory Fund? The Victory Fund provides the director of athletics the resources to provide our student-athletes and coaches with the things they need to excel in Division I athletics. Gifts to the Victory Fund directly contribute to operating costs – equipment, travel, academic support, and recruiting – items essential for our teams to compete at the highest level. The Victory Fund allows our athletic director to appropriate funding where it is most needed across our 15 varsity sports. Donors at certain levels also receive benefits. Over the years, our supporters have been incredibly generous, but for us to succeed and continue the progress we’ve made, further investment is essential. We made the commitment to maintain our progress in Division I by providing our student-athletes and coaches with the very best – the best equipment, travel, training and recovery aids available. We are committed to building championship teams and our student-athletes need your support like never before. The task at hand: raise $1.2 million for operating costs by the end of 2017. In the first six months of funding, the following individuals accepted the challenge and donated $180,000 in actual cash and nearly that amount in pledges for the upcoming year. We need you to join this group and make a difference in the lives of those who need it most – our student-athletes.
