2019 2020 ANNUAL REPORT

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear Alumni and Friends, I hope that you and yours are safe and healthy. To say this year has been a challenge would be an understatement. The pandemic has forced all of us to make changes in our daily lives that we wouldn’t have been able to predict at the beginning of the year. You’ve probably made lots of adjustments in your daily life. We’ve had to make lots of changes at PC too. Because of the pandemic, this past spring, we had to replace the in-person classes that are a hallmark of PC with online classes. Then, we postponed or cancelled events, like Commencement and Baccalaureate, that you likely look back on as some of the most memorable moments during your time at PC. We didn’t want to, of course, but we had to so that we could protect the health and safety of the campus community. And the PC community responded. Although miles apart, professors and students adjusted to the challenges of not being in Neville Hall, or Jacobs Hall, or other classrooms on campus. Many students and professors continue to collaborate virtually on research. And you responded with overwhelming support too. Your support always, but especially in times like these, show that the PC Spirit is alive and well. The pandemic isn’t over. There will always be challenges to face, even when the pandemic concludes. But, because of you, we can overcome any challenge we face so that we can continue to carry out the mission of a place we all love. Thank you,

LETTERS

Dear Alumni and Friends, This year, as we gathered the names of those who generously stood with us in our mission to support Presbyterian College, we were once again reminded of the true power of the Blue Hose Family! In a year met with a health pandemic, social unrest, and economic uncertainty, PC had its highest alumni participation rate in nine years. The advancement team is humbled by the thousands of alumni, faculty, staff, parents and friends who chose to support our efforts to underwrite the education of deserving young men and women and to carry out the Promise of PC. We do not take your philanthropic support for granted and are truly blessed to be a part of something so special. On the following pages, you will read stories of an alumna who established an endowment to pay forward her PC study abroad experiences, parents who carefully planned a gift to PC because they wanted others to be given the opportunity their son was afforded, men and women who committed time, energy, and resources to host chapter events to engage others in the life of PC, and more. You will also find a listing of those who want to ensure that Presbyterian College is able to deliver on its mission today, tomorrow and forever. Each name links to a gift that, whether big or small, allows PC to thrive in an ever-changing world. Each name links to a current or future student whose life will, in part, be shaped by the generosity of another. Each name links to a person who believes in the mission of PC and believes that our world needs more Blue Hose! Thank you for your generosity and for your desire to make a difference. I consider myself fortunate to be witness to both. Warmest best,

Jacki Berkshire Vice President for Advancement Presbyterian College

PLANNED GIVING

The Legacy of Proud PC Parents

N

elson Pharr ’86 had never heard of PC until Bob Smith ’61 told him about the college a little less than two hours away from Charlotte, at the time. “Of course Bob was a PC grad and loved the college and introduced me to PC my junior year of high school,” Pharr said. Many of Pharr’s family members were Davidson College graduates. Pharr’s grandfather was a professor at Davidson for most of his life and lived less than a block off the Davidson campus during Pharr’s childhood. “Growing up in Charlotte, we went to Davidson often to visit my grandparents,” Pharr said. “Davidson is a great college, and I have nothing against it, but I felt that I would thrive in a smaller college environment.” Pharr toured several colleges while in high school, including PC. “PC was by far my favorite,” Pharr said. “Of course I loved the beautiful campus, but it was the people who sold me on the school. Everyone was so warm and friendly and welcoming.” Pharr majored in business administration and says he feels fortunate for his PC education. “What sticks out to me most about the education I received at PC was how engaging the professors were,” Pharr said. “They all took a personal interest in the students and were always willing to spend time one-on-one with us when we needed it.” Pharr enjoyed all of his classes and tried not to miss any. The professors and the small class sizes allowed students to interact and ask questions. “Every faculty member I had was excellent, but my favorite was Dr. Rachel Stewart in the English Department,” Pharr said. “Her passion and enthusiasm for teaching and wanting her students to learn was second-to-none.”

Pharr says that eating together in Greenville Dining Hall was a part of PC that made his college experience unique. “Eating together in the dining hall is unusual in most college environments but, that experience was invaluable to me,” he said. “It allowed us to talk about what was going on in our classes, our fraternity and all other aspects of college life.” Pharr went on to enjoy a career in banking after he graduated from PC. He now serves as a private mortgage banker for Wells Fargo. Although they were not PC graduates, Pharr’s parents, the late Robert and Evelyn Pharr, of Charlotte, listed PC as one of the beneficiaries in their Charitable Remainder Trust. The endowment supports the PC Fund and the PC Scholarship Fund. “My parents saw how much PC helped me to grow and develop and prepare me for my adult life,” Nelson said. “They were fortunate enough to be able to give back to organizations that had been meaningful to our family, and PC was at the top of that list. “I’m so proud of my parents for their wise and generous estate planning, and I encourage others to do the same.” You can learn more about making estate plans for PC, and other gift planning options on our website presby.plannedgiving.org or by contacting Stephen Frey in the Office of Advancement at sfrey@presby.edu or 864.833.8462.

THE SCOTSMAN CLUB

The Hearts of Two True Blues

“I

never thought a poor ol’ boy from Seneca would ever go to college,” Jerry Smith ’50 said. Smith served in World War II and was eligible to have his college tuition covered through the GI Bill. He was determined to go. “I wrote everybody in the Southeast that I knew of,” Smith said. “Everybody said, ‘We can’t accept you; we’re full.’” Smith wrote a letter to PC and heard back a month later that he’d been accepted. It was January of 1947. “The Good Lord was watching over me because PC was the perfect fit for me,” Smith said. “Everybody was friendly and worked together. It was a family atmosphere that this ol’ South Carolina boy liked. I just loved it.” Smith majored in economics and received his commission when he graduated from PC in three years. “I got a college education and a life experience education,” Smith said about going to PC and serving in World War II. Smith served more than 20 years in the Army and the Army National Guard and enjoyed a 30-year career with All-State insurance after graduating from PC. He married

“It made me feel good, especially with Lillis’ name on it because she deserves so much recognition for what she did for PC.”

Lillis Brown, of Seneca, S.C., shortly before graduating from PC. Although she graduated from Winthrop College, Lillis always treated PC as her own. “She would talk to people all the time about going to PC,” Jerry said. The Smiths served together on the PC Board of Visitors. Last year, Lillis posthumously received the 2019 Honorary Alumnus Award. Jerry and Lillis were the first to receive the Mike Turner Scotsman Club Award for faithfully supporting the Scotsman Club. They supported studentathletes with their gifts and their presence for more than 40 years. The Lillis B. and Thomas G. Smith, Sr. Scholarship Fund provides scholarships to student-athletes. “I started giving, and I enjoy being able to do it,” Jerry said. “In my mind and in my heart, I feel good about it.” The Smiths have also supported the PC Fund over the years and also gave to the Neville Renewed campaign. A classroom in Neville Hall is named in their honor. Jerry remembers taking classes in Neville. “I can tell you where I took biology. I can tell you where I took English. I can tell you where I took Spanish. I can tell you where I almost failed analytical geometry,” Jerry said. “It’s an honor to see my name on a plaque, and it’ll be there for years to come.” “It made me feel good, especially with Lillis’s name on it because she deserves so much recognition for what she did for PC.” To learn more about the Scotsman Club and our student-athletes, visit presby.edu/scotsmanclub or contact Katharine Anne Ashmore ’14 at kashmore@presby.edu or 864.833.8292.

Women’s Soccer Alumnae Rally to Support Program

N

early one out of every three women’s soccer graduates gave back during PC’s Giving Day on May 29. The alumnae’s 29% giving percentage was the highest giving percentage for any Blue Hose sport during the 24-honor online fundraising campaign. “To have people willing to sacrifice on our behalf validates what we do and the way we have run the program over the last 30 years,” said Brian Purcell, head coach of the women’s soccer team. “When our former players chip in, it reminds me of what an important part of their lives their PC experience has been and how significant their time with the women’s soccer program was.” The gifts from the women’s soccer alumnae and all Blue Hose sports alumni supported the Scotsman Club Scholarship Fund and the Scotsman Club Student-Athlete Experience Fund. The women’s soccer program was awarded $2,500 because of past players’ efforts. “The coming together of past and present players reminds us that PC people have an unusually strong bond,” Purcell said. “PC people share a common experience that is unique. “Once you are in the Blue Hose Nation, there are things that you understand that people outside the Blue Hose Nation don’t get. Once you’re a part of it, you’re a member for life. This is true for older alumni, younger alumni, and current students.”

FOUNDATION

Lettie Pate Whitehead Foundation

P

resbyterian College students have benefitted from the generosity of Lettie Pate Whitehead and her family for nearly 50 years. Mrs. Whitehead became one of the first women in American history to serve on a major corporate board when she was named to Coca-Cola’s board of directors in 1934. Coca-Cola was becoming a household name at the time. The company’s success created a fortune that the Whitehead family would devote to charity. Known for her generosity of spirit, Mrs. Whitehead supported many causes, such as education, the arts, healthcare, and religion. Mrs. Whitehead’s younger son, Conkey, established a scholarship program through his will to honor his mother. “He focused the scholarship program on girls and women when he wrote his will in 1937, when there were so few educational opportunities available to women,” said Carrie Davis Conway, senior program officer with the Lettie Pate Whitehead Foundation.

“He was certainly inspired by his mother’s remarkable example.” The Foundation supports 200 schools across the South. “The Foundation makes grants directly to schools, who then make individual scholarship awards to students based on our eligibility criteria,” Conway said. “In any given year, 12,000 girls and women receive support from the Foundation across all 200 educational institutions we support.” In 2020, the Lettie Pate Whitehead Foundation granted PC $261,000 to award to eligible recipients. Students were those with demonstrated financial need, female, Christian and from one of nine Southern states. “Mrs. Whitehead would be delighted to know that she is helping women achieve their educational dreams,” Conway said. “She supported a number of educational institutions during her lifetime and was clearly passionate about the transforming power of education.”

CONSECUTIVE DONOR

From Grateful Student to Loyal Alumnus

A

ndrew Folks has made a gift to his alma mater every year since 1999, the year he graduated. “Helping PC as I am able makes me very happy,” Folks said. “I give because PC is a private college reliant on tuition and donations, and I want it to be financially healthy. I give in appreciation for the donors who gave for years before I was ever a student at PC. I enjoyed a tremendous college experience thanks to them, and it is my turn to pay it forward.” Supporting the College financially isn’t the only way Folks gives back to PC. He has referred high school students and looks for ways to share the brand. “I’ve bought PC tee shirts for kids because I like to, but also because I knew they would wear them in front of their friends,” Folks said. He keeps a PC lapel pin in his car to slip on before events and wears season-appropriate PC shirts whenever possible. Folks’ personal email signature includes “GO BLUE HOSE!!” right under his name. “I try to do those little things consistently,” Folks said, “and I hope it is beneficial to the College.” Folks also alerts the College when he sees a PC alumnus or alumna doing something notable. “If you read any kind of local news, follow regional sports, or participate in church or community activities somewhere in the southeastern United States, you are going to come across a PC alumnus or alumna excelling,” said Folks. “Their achievements are part of the PC story, and I am happy to pass them along to the Office of Advancement at the College for further action. It is another fast, effective way to support PC.” Want to get more involved like Andrew? STUDENT STORY

First-Generation College Graduate Gives Back

S

econd-generation American Nicholas Quatraro ’20 was also a first-generation college student while at PC. I had no idea what to expect with college or the admissions process,” Quatraro said. “I knew that I wanted to explore smaller options.” Quatraro realized PC was the “perfect size” for him the first time he visited campus. “I was able to have a sit-down conversation with professors about the education and attention each student receives because of the small class sizes,” he said. The Florida native decided in high school he wanted to become an attorney. Quatraro says that PC prepared him with a solid foundation for the study of law. He began law school at the University of South Carolina this fall. “The political science department and the pre-law minor prepared me beyond expectation with both LSAT preparation and foundational classes that will put me ahead of the curve during my first year of law school,” Quatraro said.

He realizes the generosity of donors has made college and law school a reality for him. “Coming from a lower income household, college is a luxury that we always felt was outside of our financial capabilities,” Quatraro said. “Without the generosity of PC alumni and donors, I would not have been able to attend the college I consider a second home, would have never built lifelong friendships, and would not have the ability to go to law school.” Quatraro didn’t wait long to begin giving back to his alma mater. He earned his degree from PC on May 9 and made a gift to PC on Giving Day 20 days later. “My time at PC was so influential in shaping who I am today and who I will become later on in life,” he said. “Giving to the place that gave me so much is extremely important, so future students, including my sister, who is a rising sophomore at PC, will be able to have a similar experience inside and outside of the classroom.”

...And Responsible Contribution to Society

D

r. Floyd Michael Nicholson ’14 noticed something was missing while working in private practice as a dentist. “I felt like my position in private practice wasn’t reaching the communities that needed me the most,” he said. So he left his position in Anderson, S.C., to work as a general dentist with the South Carolina Department of Corrections in Columbia. “I made this decision based on my philosophy of giving back to underrepresented communities,” Nicholson said. “Working at the Department of Corrections is a very rewarding experience because this population base is often overlooked or forgotten about. My patients are very grateful for their treatment and express their gratitude for my service daily.” Nicholson has been working with the Department of Corrections since July 2019. He earned his Doctor of Dental Medicine degree from the Medical University of South Carolina after earning his bachelor’s in chemistry from PC in 2014. While he enjoys his work now, becoming a dentist wasn’t Nocholson’s first choice. “I knew I wanted to do something in the medical field but was not sure exactly what,” Nicholson said.

While at PC, he attended a program to try to narrow down which healthcare profession he wanted to go into. He also interned at a hospital because he was considering becoming a doctor and worked in a community pharmacy to see what pharmacy work would be like. “I worked in these settings to get a feel for each medical profession,” he said. “Through these experiences I was able to get a real feel for the profession and observe day-to-day life on the job.” Nicholson says he enjoyed all of these experiences but realized none offered what he wanted to do as a career. “It was not until I interned with Dr. Kristin Derrick of Clinton Dental Care that I realized dentistry was for me,” Nicholson said. “I greatly appreciate Dr. Derrick and all that she and her team taught me during my time at PC.” One of the ways Nicholson shows his appreciation to PC is by giving to his alma mater. “I view PC as the beginning of my adulthood,” Nicholson said. “PC was where I started to grow independently. I was given the attention and support I needed to reach my goals. “My hope is that my giving to PC will ensure that future students will be able to have as rewarding of an experience as I did—if not better!”

ALUMNI CHAPTERS

Forever Blue Hose PC Alumni Chapters

T

he alumni chapters have been very important in this year’s efforts to support PC’s annual funds. With chapters in Greenville, the Midlands, Charleston, Atlanta, Charlotte, and Laurens County, the leadership teams in each group did a great job of coordinating events that were well attended. This year saw an increase in alumni attendance at all of our chapter events. The followup after events and throughout the year with alumni in their chapter areas led to higher participation in alumni giving from those areas. The chapters’ involvement in spreading the word about Giving Day through social media and other means certainly led to increased alumni participation on that day. As we move into next year’s annual giving campaign, we hope to continue to appreciate the importance of chapter activities in increasing alumni engagement. 16

This program was re-established by the annual giving team in 2018 and has been incredibly successful. Each year since, the group of class agents has grown and continued to learn new strategies for engagement of alumni. Through the help of the class agents during the fiscal year 2020, each alumni class from 1945–2019 had over 10% of their class give to the College. This overall effort enabled the alumni giving percentage to grow from 16.16% in fiscal year 2019 to 19.40% in fiscal year 2020. While the national trend is seeing the alumni giving rate decrease, the alumni giving rate at PC has increased, in part thanks to the use of class agents. In fact, the class of 1963 had a giving percentage of 58.57% while our alumni in the class of 2015 reached 33.87%. As the College and the Office of Advancement continue to explore creative ways to increase funds, we would like to see two class agents for each alumni class. WHY I GIVE

Inspired to Dream: Inspired to Give By Whitney Harrison ’07

P

resbyterian College is more than a college; it is an experience that lasts a lifetime. While PC provides incredible academics, the lessons I treasure the most—the ones that continue to shape me today—transcend the classroom. In between Dr. Ingram’s lectures on the dialectical scale of materialism and history classes on the front steps of Neville, I discovered the value of being part of a community. But PC’s undertaking in that regard is far more noble than simply encouraging school spirit, it helped illuminate the guideposts to a life well-lived to which I still turn. In the small town of Clinton, PC showed me a dynamic world of endless possibilities that awaited me and the impact I could make—with no dream or idea ever being too grand. As part of helping me find my own path and passions, PC instilled a lifelong dedication to service. Through our close-knit community, I learned the meaning of showing up for one another to celebrate victories or mourn losses, and how to fill all the days in between with unexpected adventure, fun, and of course, last minute theme parties. I made lifelong friends who are now family, and I will forever know the import of being actively engaged and committed to a community. One of our greatest tests in life is how we care for one another. In PC’s beautiful and unique way, it prepared me for that test by instilling in me a standard of how to live life with purpose, passion, service, and true friendship. I give to PC because of the person our college inspired and enabled me to be, and because I want future generations to receive the same lessons and experiences.

All my best memories come back clearly

to a small town, where the “ T ”

in Clinton is sweet and silent. —Whitney

T

onya Williams ’92 understands the importance of giving back to her alma mater. As a student-athlete, she was given the opportunity to attend PC thanks to the generosity of others. As an alumna, she aims to give that same experience to future Blue Hose. “My experience at PC was indescribable, really,” Williams said. “You’re told it will be the best four years of your life, but that is a definite understatement. “I was able to meet so many different and wonderful people from all walks of life.” Williams was a member of the volleyball team and the women’s basketball team from 1988 to 1992. During two of those years, she played with her sister, Dionne Carter ‘94. Williams graduated from PC with a degree in sociology. During her time on the basketball court, she was voted team captain during her junior and senior seasons. She finished her collegiate basketball career with 1219 career points and 512 career rebounds. She scored 499 points in her sophomore season alone. After graduation, Williams began her career. After being away for a few years, Williams was looking for a way to get involved with PC again. Thanks to the outreach from both the Advancement Office and Athletics, Williams now serves as a member on the Scotsman Club board and believes in giving back to the College. Earlier this year, Williams served as the 2020 Letterman’s Day Women’s Honorary Captain. Today, she is in management at BMW, where she has been for 24 years. “The experience that PC gave me is hard to put into words,” Williams said. “It truly was a phenomenal experience.” Visit our brand new Scotsman Club website to learn more and support our student-athletes.

ENDOWMENT

Amy Nunamaker Gilli ’98, with her husband, Bertrand, values the opportunity to experience the world through traveling abroad and aims to give the same opportunity to PC students.

A Shared Experience

“T

he experience changed my life,” Amy Nunamaker Gilli ’98, said about participating in the Oxford program between her junior and senior years at PC. “It was such an amazing experience for me because, as long as I can remember, I’ve been fascinated by other cultures.” Nunamaker Gilli spent three weeks studying abroad in England. She took classes in art and literature at Oxford University. “I wanted to soak up everything I could,” she said. “I would spend hours in museums trying to see everything, reading all the information I could about our stops along the way and just enjoying the experience. “It was truly a treasured experience in my life.” Nunamaker Gilli’s husband, Bertrand, had a similar experience, “but from the other side,” according to Amy. “Bertrand is from France and, when we met, he had come to the U.S. to work as a chef and had always been intrigued by American culture,” Amy said. Bertrand met an American couple when he was younger and traveling through Europe.

“They became like family over the years,” Amy said. “Bertrand would travel to the U.S. to visit sometimes while on summer break from school.” Amy and Bertrand established the Nunamaker-Gilli Endowment for Experiential Learning in 2019. The scholarship provides financial support for students who may not have the opportunity to study abroad. “Bertrand and I were both fortunate enough to have help from friends and family to visit the places we had dreamed of visiting,” Amy said. “Without that help, we likely neither would have seen nor experienced the different places, cultures, history and art that we have.” Amy says that she and her husband are grateful to their parents, grandparents and friends for allowing them to experience different parts of the world. “We established the NunamakerGilli endowment not only in order to show our gratitude to our families for the experiences they gave us, but also to pass that experience along to others,” Amy said.
