We hope the Bauhaus theme represents every feeling of your 2022. While we would have loved to have created an entire yearbook dedicated to Taylor Swift, we decided that a fun and colourful art deco theme would encapsulate how full of zest and liveliness this year has been!

Our vision for the 2022 Kookaburra was a complete set of memories that all of us can carry beyond school. For us and the rest of the Year 12s, it marks the ending of our high school journey, whilst celebrating the joys of being part of the PLC community. For younger students, we hope it feels like the Kookaburra has been put together by every single one of you, not just us or the staff. We hope that every student, whether they are starting their journey at PLC or ending it, can open to a page and feel engaged within the energy of the community.

It has been a privilege to see students across the Junior and Senior Schools engage in different disciplines and activities that give them joy. We hope that you can look through all the pages and see yourself in an activity that you enjoyed, or feel inspired to learn that new instrument, try out for that team, audition for the new production, or challenge yourself to help your local community.

This publication would simply not have been possible without the endless support that we have received from staff along the way. We would like to thank Ms Gemma Freel for her constant guidance and wisdom throughout this entire process, she has truly been the backbone of this year’s publication. We would also like to thank the entire Communications & Engagement team for all the crucial work they do behind the scenes. This Kookaburra would so not be full of colour and pictures if it weren’t for them!

Kookaburra has taught us the importance of backup, cloud space, and technology. We hope your feeling of ‘22 will never break down. And finally, to Taylor Swift’s biggest fans, the gorgeous class of 2022: This year has simply been out of our “wildest dreams,” and we hope that this year’s Kookaburra will never go out of style ;)

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

WHAT HAVE BEEN YOUR MOST MEMORABLE MOMENTS ACROSS THE SCHOOL THIS YEAR?

There have been so many memorable moments that it is difficult to identify specific occasions but I do think that the opening of the new PLC Music Building was a memorable moment in the life of the school. I know that discussions and planning for this building started well before my time as Principal and it is really to the credit of others that the building became a reality. To be in the Music Building on the first morning for the first ensemble rehearsal was a very special and memorable moment, and I am extremely grateful to everyone who was involved in the project. On that first morning, I could see in the faces of the students and staff using it what a significant impact it will have on our Music Programme at PLC and how it will benefit every student who has the opportunity to learn in it.

HOW DO YOU PLAN TO CONTINUE STRENGTHENING RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN THE JUNIOR AND SENIOR SCHOOLS, AND WHY IS THIS SO IMPORTANT?

The relationship between the Junior School and Senior School is critical to building a true sense of community at PLC. With community being one of our four core values it will always be important that we continue to explore avenues to further develop and strengthen all relationships between students at PLC. Whether they be in Pre-Kindergarten or Year 12, it is equally important that every student feels a sense of ‘belonging’ to our community. As a school, we will continue to work with staff and students across the school to build our sense of community and being one school. Events such as whole school assemblies will remain an important start to each term and we will continue to explore avenues for Junior and Senior School students to work together and to build relationships.

WHO IS YOUR GREATEST ROLE MODEL, AND WHY?

My greatest role model is my grandmother. When I was young, she was someone who believed in me and encouraged me to believe that, if I was willing to work hard, I could achieve anything. When I wanted to become a teacher, she encouraged me to be the first female in my family to go to university. She also had very high expectations of me and was the first person to tell me when I was not necessarily being the best version of myself. She was a woman of great integrity and compassion. She encouraged me to want to be a better person.

HOW HAS MAY PERFORMED IN HER ROLE AS ‘CHIEF HAPPINESS OFFICER’ THIS YEAR?

I think May has worked hard in her role as ‘Chief Happiness Officer’, I also think that she has thoroughly enjoyed it. She has excelled in assisting Pre-Kindergarten learn their colours in her many dress ups and, although she found the content a little tricky, she did enjoy the opportunity to join in some Senior School Maths and BME classes. She is very good at making herself available should anyone come to Scorgie House Reception offering her a pat and has worked hard to refine her side roll move, to ensure she can be in the perfect position for a tummy rub. May does take her role very seriously though and has struggled a bit during the school holidays when school is very quiet, but she is very excited at the start of term when everyone comes back.

WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION BEHIND THE YEAR 12 MOTTO?

The inspiration behind the Year 12 motto this year was togetherness and the importance of having a hopeful, positive outlook on the future. With the disruptions due to the pandemic, we decided that we wanted to have the motto address the fact that while the future is filled with unknowns, we can always control how we approach what is to come. As well as demonstrating that no matter what life throws at us, we don’t have to throw away our goals. We knew that we may experience some disruptions throughout our year, but we wanted everyone to know that 2022 can still be filled with fun and a touch of our inspiration, Taylor Swift. It was also about motivating people to make the most of every little moment and help each other through the year ahead, ensuring that everyone had their own best 2022 that they possibly could.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR HIGHLIGHT OF THIS YEAR?

This year so far has been filled with many exciting moments along the way. But something that really stands out overall is that despite the disruptions the pandemic caused, everyone still stuck together and made the most of the situation. No one gave up and we believe we all did the best we could. We kept bringing positivity to each other’s lives and didn’t lose sight of all of the good that was to come. This was highlighted during our Year 12 Talent Show fundraiser and the Year 12 Pyjama Party. Needless to say, rather than finding 10 things we hate about each other, we all discovered that we love Heath Ledger. Although we can’t go back and relive our ball memories on the dancefloor, it’s something that we’ll never forget. These events were organised amidst the restrictions, but nevertheless we came together and tried to make it as fun as possible for everyone involved. We also loved the free dress days as getting to put on costumes and embarrassing ourselves alongside our year group was always a good time.

WHAT IS THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO PASS ON TO YOUNGER STUDENTS?

Be authentic and embrace who you truly are. When you stay true to yourself, people around you will recognise that and it will allow you to make genuine friendships. You will also be able to find joy in mundane things and achieve goals that you originally thought you weren’t capable of. It’s freeing and there’s so much more fun to soak up when we’re not focusing on being the person other people want us to be. So, make the most of the little moments and remember all the events that make up your own unique journeys. Whether it is a House Tutor Group party or eating a Founders’ Day cookie, if it can make you smile, remember that feeling and share that joy with the people around you.

IF YOU COULD TRAVEL THROUGH TIME, WOULD YOU RATHER VISIT THE PAST OR THE FUTURE? WHY?

If we could travel through time, we would visit the past. Often memories of events can be quite nostalgic and we find ourselves reflecting on the past. To be completely honest, the thought of visiting the future, which is unknown, is quite scary. Although, picking a moment in time to travel back to would be difficult, both of us would probably go back to our childhoods, or maybe back to when One Direction was still together. Perhaps we would just go back to see the dinosaurs (Jurassic World fans here) and other things nobody has ever seen before. Although we are kind of scared of messing with the timeline as we are no time travelling experts like Marty McFly. But you know what, sometimes you just take a leap of faith and, as Elsa always says, dive “Into the Unknown.”

WHAT INSPIRES YOU IN YOUR ROLE AS HEAD OF SENIOR SCHOOL?

I feel very lucky to be the Head of Senior School at PLC and the main reason for this is the wonderful students with whom I get to work each day. I am inspired by their personal achievements, their resilience to challenges, and the way they look out for each other and our staff.

IN YOUR OPINION, WHAT HAVE BEEN SOME OF THE MOST SIGNIFICANT ACHIEVEMENTS OF THIS YEAR?

It has been really lovely to see life at PLC return to a new normal following COVID restrictions. There have been many significant achievements this year, but I would have to say that the Year 12 Talent Show to fundraise for the Ukraine crisis, the Year 9 Service Leadership project, and the fantastic work of the Each for Equal Committee all represent significant achievements.

IN WHAT WAYS DOES YOUR ROLE AT THE SCHOOL ENRICH YOU?

I feel enriched by getting to work with not only so many wonderful young people, but with an amazing and dedicated team of staff. The staff at PLC always go above and beyond to assist others and their passionate approach to pastoral and academic care enriches me.

IF YOU HAD A SUPERPOWER, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

I have really missed being able to travel since COVID, so I would have to say I would love the ability to teleport to anywhere in the world whenever I wanted to.

WHY IS THE JUNIOR SCHOOL SUCH A NURTURING ENVIRONMENT FOR YOUNG PEOPLE?

There is a saying, “it takes a village to raise a child”. We in the Junior School see ourselves as a key part of each child’s village. Every Junior School staff member is an important part of each individual child’s learning and life journey. Parents are regular visitors to the classrooms, allowing us to build strong connections between home and school.

I believe that we provide an outstanding level of pastoral care with classroom teachers supported by Pastoral and Academic Care Co-ordinators, fellow teachers, library staff, the school counsellor, teachers from the Learning Enrichment Centre, education assistants, and the Head of Junior School. Each child therefore has an extended school family to connect with.

WHAT IS THE MOST REWARDING PART OF YOUR JOB?

I get to school early and, as I work in my office, I hear children chattering and laughing as the front gate slams indicating that the students are arriving to start their day. A new day heralds new learning, new experiences, and challenges, for there is always something amazing happening. I just love the excitement and energy that surrounds the Junior School.

WHICH MOMENTS HAVE MADE LASTING MEMORIES FOR YOU THIS YEAR?

Watching the Kindergarten children grow and develop as they play outside my office, particularly the joy a child displays as they conquer the monkey bars.

Various sporting events where the Junior School students showed wonderful team spirit, positive attitudes, improved skill levels, and a growth mindset.

The Festival of Science; the students’ involvement and excitement proving that Science is fun and wondrous.

Grandparents and Special Friends Day and Arts Day; despite needing some hasty re-organisation, the community pulled together and everyone involved had a fabulous day.

Year 6 Exhibition; standing back and seeing the Year 6 girls grow into independent, confident, and capable learners who are so very well equipped to become well-balanced, global citizens.

DO YOU PREFER CHILDHOOD OR ADULTHOOD?

I have so much to be grateful for that I simply cannot answer this question. Each and every experience, no matter what phase of my life, has led me to where I am – and I am very content with my life.

IF YOUR HOUSE HAD A MASCOT, WHAT ANIMAL WOULD IT BE?

If Baird had a mascot, I think it would be a Clownfish. They are the vibrant orange, distinctive, and social fish that rose to popularity thanks to the Pixar movie, Finding Nemo. Nemo is naively adventurous, curious, friendly, and willing to put his friends before himself. He dares to take risks and yearns for adventure but learns some important lessons along the way, most importantly, it’s ok to ask for help and be brave at the same time. Life is full of ups and downs, and is a journey in which you are bound to meet all kinds of people. The key to success is to keep going or as Dory says: “Just keep swimming! Just keep swimming!”

HOW HAVE YOU AND YOUR HOUSE EMBODIED YOUR MOTTO THIS YEAR?

Our House motto is “Participation and Progress”, and I am confident our PLC Bairdians stepped up to that plate in 2022. Personally, COVID meant I had to miss my first ever Inter-House Cross Country and then a netball ankle injury meant I had to hobble around on crutches at the Inter-House Athletics Carnival and this was really disappointing for me. I threw a decent javelin though and managed to “march” with my beloved Baird besties.”I just kept swimming” regardless of the hurdles thrown my way! The Year 12 Baird coordinators have fostered an environment where smiles and laughter are contagious, and it’s been a privilege to work alongside these girls this year.

WHAT DID YOUR HOUSE ACHIEVE THIS YEAR THAT YOU ARE MOST PROUD OF?

Baird’s 2021 Arts Day success was a tough act to follow but I loved seeing the excitement amongst the Year 7s as they experienced their first “Best Day of the Year”. Although we haven’t received any trophies or first places we did successfully win a few year group championships which I am very proud of. I’m hoping the Year 12 Baird group have instilled a “have a go” attitude amongst the younger Baird students. Harry S Truman, 33rd President of the United States, once said, “It’s amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit”. Success really is the sum of small efforts repeated day in and day out. I really believe it is an attitude like this that sets a good team apart from a great team.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE TOM CRUISE MOVIE AND WHY?

I think my obsession with Top Gun (the OG) and Top Gun Maverick is well documented. I sympathise with anyone who had to listen to me count down Maverick’s many release delays. I think I could just about recite the whole OG movie and while there are just too many amazing one-liners to choose a favourite, “Talk to me Goose” features regularly in our household. While the idea of being a naval aviator is very cool to me, I question my strengths in Physics and Maths for this career path. In life though, I would love to think people would consider me a reliable and trustworthy “wing-woman”.

House Captain’s Report

IF YOUR HOUSE HAD A MASCOT, WHAT ANIMAL WOULD IT BE?

I had to consult my lovely Year 8s for this answer. It was pretty clear that they thought Sonic the Hedgehog should be our mascot. Not only is Sonic the Hedgehog blue but he is full of energy, enthusiastic, and driven. Although we aren’t necessarily the fastest runners, we definitely posses those qualities.

HOW HAVE YOU AND YOUR HOUSE EMBODIED YOUR MOTTO THIS YEAR?

I believe that as a House we have definitely embodied our motto ‘Play the Game’ through consistent participation. I think this was most evident at the Swimming Carnival this year. Although we aren’t the most amazing swimmers, except for the few IGSSA stars, I was impressed by everyone’s willingness to hop in the pool. The Swimming Carnival was one of the most fun days and a day when we really showed off our House spirit. Our House has been missing a House chant for a couple of years now and so this year, we introduced a new Carmichael House chant and hearing everyone chanting with pride was incredibly heartwarming. Moreover, seeing the girls in their costumes, whether it was blue tutus or enormous blow up inflatable sharks, was phenomenal. I think our spirit really stood out at the Swimming Carnival and we really ‘played the game’, you could even say we slayed it.

WHAT DID YOUR HOUSE ACHIEVE THIS YEAR THAT YOU ARE MOST PROUD OF?

We aren’t necessarily a winning House, but this year we started on a win with Academics, alongside Stewart, and I believe that was an incredible achievement. However, my proudest moment was definitely when we won Arts Day this year. Following our seventh place last year, we were committed to not coming last in 2022. Yet, never in my wildest dreams did I EVER think that we would win Arts Day, considering that Carmichael hadn’t won since 2008. I believe that this year we really came together as a House and showed everyone who we were. I commend all the girls who signed up for Music, Drama, HTG Choir, HTG Dance, and submitted cakes and photos. Every single girl in Carmichael really gave it their all and I think it’s fair to say that we have never been prouder to be in the blue House.

IF YOUR HOUSE HAD A MASCOT, WHAT ANIMAL WOULD IT BE?

Our mascot would be a red fire-breathing dragon. Dragons are powerful creatures that are not afraid to take risks and love a good challenge. Dragons may seem slightly intimidating at first, but think of the pink dragon from Shrek, or Toothless from ‘How To Train Your Dragon’. If you just get to know them a little bit, they are extremely loyal and friendly. We are bold, confident, and capable of so much – just like a dragon. Ferguson has strength, power, enthusiasm, and fire (we just lava winning – get it? Lava…) Well anyways, we are full of Fergo fierceness and ferocity, so a red fire-breathing dragon is the perfect match for us!

HOW HAVE YOU AND YOUR HOUSE EMBODIED YOUR MOTTO THIS YEAR?

We have embodied our motto ‘Always Moving Forward’ through our participation in all House activities. At the Athletics Carnival, Cross Country, and Swimming Carnival, we were literally moving forward as we crossed the finish lines. We remained strong and steadfast which helped us with our incredible wins in these events. Whether our amazing runners and swimmers were taking the lead, whether someone (me) was slowly trailing behind everyone in the 1500m race, or whether we were in the pool for participation, we were constantly striving to move forward. To me, moving forward is about collaborating and recognising everyone’s strengths and efforts. As a team, we have really embodied House spirit and demonstrated commitment and enthusiasm to ‘always moving forward’.

WHAT DID YOUR HOUSE ACHIEVE THIS YEAR THAT YOU ARE MOST PROUD OF?

Everything Fergo has achieved this year has made me proud! I am proud of our willing attitude, dedication, and our all-round achievements. My highlight was when we came FIRST in HOUSE DANCE!! I might be biased, but I think we danced to the best song…ever? What made me extremely proud was seeing it all come together, seeing the team support one other, and seeing everyone hype each other up. I’m hoping the real One D members aren’t upset that we did it better than them – (I wouldn’t be mad if they got back together to try and prove me wrong). Not only did we look fabulous and powerful and have great energy, but everyone was committing and having fun. I couldn’t be more proud and ‘I know, you know…I hope you’ll remember how we danced’ – because I sure will!

WHAT IS YOUR GO-TO KARAOKE SONG?

If you thought I would be able to pick one song, you were wrong. Here are my top three. Although my karaoke song choice strongly depends on my mood, you can never go wrong with Bohemian Rhapsody. The chorus just hits differently, and you can really get into it. On a side note, I think it is in the perfect range for my voice and I feel like I sound super good singing it. But anyways, my next go to song is Chiquitita – except for when I nearly got decapitated – iykyk. It has immaculate vibes and always makes me happy. Now hear me out, last on my list is Empire State of Mind…I have the rap down pat (I can prove it) and I couldn’t leave it off my list; it’s simply too good.

Definitely the LION KING! Simba screams out someone who is competitive, but at the same time he is very close with his pride. This is McNeil. Together, we are a close House that looks out for one another and our competitive side shines through when it needs to. A connected, close House that works together to achieve success. And that leads into the motto…

HOW HAVE YOU AND YOUR HOUSE EMBODIED YOUR MOTTO THIS YEAR?

Well… “Victory or Death”. Heads up, we do not take this literally. I would like to interpret this motto as one which represents our competitive nature within the House. We strive to achieve and succeed. Although we have not claimed a winning title, a victory to us is the whole House participating. “Satisfaction lies in the effort, not in the attainment. Full effort is full victory” – Gandhi.

WHAT DID YOUR HOUSE ACHIEVE THIS YEAR THAT YOU ARE MOST PROUD OF?

ARTS DAY HOUSE DANCE. Our mighty McNeil aeroplane soared high into the sky. The dedication of every member in the House to get this dance together was something else. Behind the scenes, my amazing McNeillians pulled through and executed all the dance moves so well. Smiles all around with yellow filling the sports centre. I was so happy to see all the effort all our HTGs put in for Arts Day. Our very close pride is one to be proud of. A chant echoing through the stadium at Athletics, the motto that brings motivation. Everyone involved, and the House spirit spreading across the yellow stands. I LOVE YOU ALL.

WOULD YOU RATHER HAVE A MULLET OR A PERM?

I would say a mullet is the way to go as that seems to be the latest trend sparking around town at the moment. You watch one game of AFL and half the team has a mullet. A mullet for sure.

IF YOUR HOUSE HAD A MASCOT, WHAT ANIMAL WOULD IT BE?

Our mascot would most definitely be a black bear. The animal is known to be strong, resilient, attentive, and is a symbol for family. However, beware!!! Their protective demeanour is something to look out for if they ever feel provoked or threatened. The qualities of a black bear, I believe, strongly resemble Ross. Our constant effort to strive for our personal best is a true testament to our resilience and strength as we compete against the other Houses. Whether we are swimming in the pool or dancing our hearts out at Arts Day, Ross always embodies the importance of family. We believe that having a close and connected family is the key to our success, much like the black bear as they protect one another.

HOW HAVE YOU AND YOUR HOUSE EMBODIED YOUR MOTTO THIS YEAR?

I personally believe Ross has fearlessly embodied the motto of “We Came, We Saw, We Conquered” as we approached every carnival and event with the highest of efforts and support for one another. In Ross, it isn’t so much about the outcome or winning a title, rather it is the feeling of being proud of ourselves individually and as a House for all the efforts, participation, and hard work that was put into every challenge that we faced throughout the year with a Ross give it a go attitude.

On the special day of Arts Day, it was truly Ross’s day to shine. With the months of practices and an incredible amount of effort from all year groups, Ross came to Arts Day with a sense of teamwork and enthusiasm. From Lady Gaga and Radios to ‘Ain’t No Mountain High Enough’, Ross fearlessly proved that we have a great amount of talent to offer. Coming third overall was undoubtedly a huge achievement that we were all proud of. I love this House and I am beyond happy that Ross was able to prove itself and we saw our hard work pay off, but most importantly we showed how special our Ross family is.

IF YOU COULD TRAVEL AROUND THE WORLD FOR A YEAR, WHERE WOULD YOU LIKE TO VISIT AND WHY?

If I had the opportunity to travel the world for a year, I would love to go to Europe during the summer and Canada during the winter. I would love to experience Europe by travelling through incredible places like Italy, Croatia, and Spain. I would also love to spend a winter season in Canada to go hiking through the beautiful landscapes, along with skiing in places like Whistler and Alberta, as they are known for having amazing ski seasons.

IF YOUR HOUSE HAD A MASCOT, WHAT ANIMAL WOULD IT BE?

Our mascot would have to be the Green Tree Snake. These are long slender snakes with a variety of colours. They are fast, discrete, strong, and determined to be the last one standing. Of course, this is Stewart. As a group, we are strong and determined to be the last ones holding the trophy. Not only do we strive for success but we work hard to get there. This is exactly what the Green Tree Snake does; they are resilient and persistent, working hard to achieve the ultimate victory.

HOW HAVE YOU AND YOUR HOUSE EMBODIED YOUR MOTTO THIS YEAR?

I believe Stewart has embodied the motto of ‘Through Difficulties to the Heights’ with our countless efforts and continued participation in every single thing we do. From Swimming and Athletics Carnivals, to Inter-House Cross Country and then of course the big ARTS DAY, Stewart has never given up. We are driven with determination, strive for success, and nothing ever brings us down. For Stewart, it isn’t always about being the overall winner but, instead, feeling supported and proud of the effort you’ve put in along the journey. This effort and determination is the true win for the Stewart family.

WHAT DID YOUR HOUSE ACHIEVE THIS YEAR THAT YOU ARE MOST PROUD OF?

The AMAZING STEWART HOUSE CHOIR. I have to say, hearing everyone sing their hearts out, with smiles on their faces, embodying the infamous Amy Winehouse has truly been my proudest moment. When we stepped onto the stands, with our green headbands filling the sport centre, I had never felt so grateful for the beautiful Stewart family we had created. Slight confession, but I was so in awe of how we sang, to the point that I’ve continued to watch the choir video every night. The hard work and enthusiasm everyone has within this House has been shown through the countless carnivals and the continued rehearsals for Arts Day. All of you have made me so proud and I will never forget the effort you put in.

WHAT’S THE BEST JOKE YOU’VE EVER HEARD?

“Why did Adele cross the road?... To say hello from the other side”. All jokes aside, I honestly laugh at anything. So, if I had to choose, why not incorporate the classic “why did the chicken cross the road?” with the altered version including my icon, Adele.

IF YOUR HOUSE HAD A MASCOT, WHAT ANIMAL WOULD IT BE?

When I was running for House Captain in Year 6, I purchased a sparkly plush purple dolphin in hopes of establishing “Debbie the Dolphin” as Summers’ new House mascot as House Captain. Unfortunately, I was unsuccessful with becoming House Captain in Year 6 and instead was left with Debbie the Dolphin sitting in the corner of my room. Although Debbie the Dolphin is long gone now, I think that she would have made a fabulous mascot for Summers and would have had that sparkle that stays with anyone in Summers, even after their journey at PLC.

HOW HAVE YOU AND YOUR HOUSE EMBODIED YOUR MOTTO THIS YEAR?

Summers has definitely ‘Aimed High’ this year. Even though we may not have come first in everything, I was so proud of the way that everyone in Summers really pushed themselves and gave it their all. Dropping a discreet shoutout to the Year 7 and 8s who were able to pull through with the dance circle transformation on Arts Day. Best moment ever. The support and energy that Summers displayed this year really amazed me and made me proud to be a part of the Summers clan.

WHAT DID YOUR HOUSE ACHIEVE THIS YEAR THAT YOU ARE MOST PROUD OF?

I would have to say winning House marching. The utilisation of the Camp Rock March was a bold and risky move, but Summers was able to rise to the challenge. It also indirectly let me live out my Camp Rock Demi Lovato dream that has been suppressed since 2009. I was so proud of the House for coming together and putting all of their energy and enthusiasm into the marching. The minute of fame when I got to stand next to Annie Pfeiffer (dream come true) looking out on an excited sea of purple will truly be one that I will never forget.

HOW LONG DO YOU THINK YOU’D SURVIVE IN A ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE?

I think I would fall victim to the zombie apocalypse in a whopping 5 minutes. Unfortunately, my indecisiveness would most likely get the better of me and I wouldn’t be able to decide whether to fight with passion and pride or play dead and inevitably end up standing right in a prime target position in the midst of my moment of contemplation. I would love to be able to Katniss Everdeen my way out of a zombie apocalypse (I know the Hunger Games was not a zombie apocalypse situation but roll with it) but unfortunately, I never excelled with the use of a ‘NERF Rebelle Arrow Revolution Bow’, instead, unintentionally shooting the bow backwards and into my face.

WHY ARE THE ARTS ESSENTIAL IN OUR LIVES?

The Arts are for everyone. In a world without arts, we would be stripped of our individuality, creativity, and how we express ourselves. Arts are an escape from reality where you can be free from any insecurities and inhibitions. No matter your skill level, everyone can reap the benefits of the Arts. Creativity is a crucial part of everyday life, so for me the Arts help me find a balance in my hectic schedule.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO BE PART OF THE ARTS?

From a young age, the Arts have always been my calling. I started with singing in the shower, which I then took into singing lessons. A big inspiration for my arts journey would be all my teachers through the years who have helped me develop as a young performer. They have inspired me to always strive to improve, taught me self-discipline and determination, and have overall increased my own personal confidence, whether that be on a stage or in everyday life.

DO YOU HAVE TO BE CREATIVE OR TALENTED TO BE INVOLVED IN THE ARTS?

No, most definitely not. In my opinion, the Arts are for everyone and are inclusive of everyone, especially at PLC. The only thing that you need to involve yourself in the Arts is a passion and a desire for fun and inclusivity. Arts is all about participation; if you never give it a go, you might miss out on discovering a talent, passion, or interest.

IF YOU COULD ONLY SING ONE SONG FOR REST OF YOUR LIFE, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

If I could sing one song for the rest of my life it would definitely be ‘If I Ain’t Got You’ by Alicia Keys!

WHY IS RECONCILIATION IMPORTANT?

Reconciliation is the strengthening of relationships between non-Indigenous and Indigenous peoples for the benefit of all Australians. We believe reconciliation is important to implement, as it creates and fosters connections and friendships. It establishes a fair playing ground for all and gives equal opportunity to every person. It ensures that all people no matter their backgrounds, can feel that they are part of a community, and can belong.

WHAT DID THE THEMES OF THIS YEAR’S RECONCILIATION AND NAIDOC WEEKS MEAN TO YOU?

This year’s NAIDOC Week theme was ‘Get Up, Stand Up and Show Up’. This theme signifies the importance of not giving up. It means to stand up for what you believe in, to not back down and put up a fight. The Reconciliation Week theme this year was ‘Be Brave, Make Change’. It imposes the idea of being strong and is about how it takes courage to stand up for yourself and others. We believe these themes are important as they are about sharing stories and culture, as well as being an ally. The themes encourage everyone to understand the power that they hold and that they can use it to make changes for the better.

WHAT ASPECT OF INDIGENOUS CULTURE IS MOST IMPORTANT TO YOU?

The aspect we believe is most important in Indigenous culture is community. Community means a place that someone can belong to. It is where people come together and voice one opinion which is much stronger than one solo voice standing alone. Being part of a community provides every individual with a sense of purpose and meaning and is crucial to our life satisfaction.

HOW CAN MEMBERS OF THE COMMUNITY GET INVOLVED IN AND HELP TO PROMOTE RECONCILIATION?

Members of the community can get involved and promote reconciliation by doing their own research and educating themselves, as well as keeping an eye out for calls for support and showing up. You can also make an effort to endorse Indigenous owned businesses or artists. Your support will make a big difference.

WHAT MAKES BOARDING AT PLC SPECIAL?

There are so many things about PLC boarding that make it so special; the caring staff, the amazing students, the vibes of the place when you walk in, but in the end all I can conclude is that the PLC Boarding House is a very special community.

It is a place in which students from all around the world can come together and have a bit of fun whilst being at school. For many, the Boarding House is like a second family especially when you’re not always able to see your own family.

I can say with confidence that there is never a dull day, From the crazy Year 7s to the Year 12s there is always something going on, whether it’s convo karaoke, baking cookies, or playing UNO, there is always something you can get involved with.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE BOARDING HOUSE EVENT?

My favourite Boarding House event is Closed Weekend. Closed Weekend is the first weekend of Term 1 and it is a time when the whole Boarding House comes together.

We do fun activities so that we all get to know each other, especially the new students, and it’s a time when our Boarding House community can become stronger. On this weekend we do various activities, organised by the Year 12s. This year we did lots of different and fun activities such as colour fights, BBQ dinners, sports games, writing letters to our future selves, water slides, human bingo, dessert making with buddies, and much more.

WHAT ARE SOME FUN FACTS ABOUT THE BOARDING HOUSE?

The Boarding House has 155 students now in 2022. There are 16 International students and 41 Indigenous students. Over the years, the Boarding House has changed; people, the building itself, and staff. Back in the day, the upper Boarders’ Sitting Room (BSR) was a phone room. There were 8 telecom phones lined up against the wall and girls would line up for miles to call their parents, friends and lovers. You didn’t know when someone was calling, so if you picked up the phone and it wasn’t for you, you would have to go and find the person that the caller was looking for. In 2003, girls were only allowed to go to The Grove Shopping Centre once a week on a Saturday and they had to wear their school uniform. Each room had one fan and one heater in it. The only aircons in the Boarding House were in the BSR, so on some hot nights you would wake up and find girls who had dragged their mattresses down to the BSR to be under the aircon. Back in 2012, the Boarding House had a vending machine called Brenda the Venda but it was later removed as it was meddled with too much by the girls.

WHAT IS THE BEST THING ABOUT LIVING WITH GIRLS FROM ALL AROUND THE WORLD?

The best thing about living with girls from all around the world is the fact that everyone is different, and everyone has their own story to tell. There are people from all around the world, and it is fascinating hearing everyone’s stories and experiences. Living with friends is an amazing experience. It’s like a ‘sleepover’ every night. There are many different cultures, and I hope that throughout this year and many years to come we will have and embrace the many amazing cultures that are within our Boarding House community.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE MEMORY FROM JUNIOR SCHOOL?

My favourite memory from Junior School would have to be the Year 6 Final Assembly. I remember that I really enjoyed the assemblies prior to ours and I thought they were so entertaining and I was so excited to be involved. I remember all of the rehearsals and preparation, and loved how we could add our own creative input. It was a very exciting time, especially given we were about to enter the next stage of our school journey in the Senior School.

HOW CAN WE MAINTAIN AND NURTURE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN THE JUNIOR AND SENIOR SCHOOLS? WHY ARE THESE RELATIONSHIPS SO IMPORTANT?

The easiest way to maintain and nurture relationships is simply through being friendly, smiling, and always saying “hello”. Additionally, participating in sport coaching in the Junior School is also a great opportunity to nurture relationships. In Term 2, I provided an opportunity for older students to head down to the Junior School library before school to read and interact with the younger students and complete tasks within the library for Service hours. Participating in this activity was a great way to nurture relationships with Junior School students.

I think these relationships are important because they provide the younger students with someone who inspires them and someone whom they can look up to. It also brings a lot of joy to both the older and younger students. Building relationships outside of your friendship circle is also a great way to build and feel a sense of belonging within the school community.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE CHILDHOOD GAME?

My favourite childhood game is four square. It brings back a lot of memories from the Junior School as my friends and I would play it non-stop and it was a lot of fun. I would run frantically from class to get a good spot in the line and then play it until the bell rang. We all got a bit competitive at times but at the same time it brought us all a lot of joy and laughs.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO STUDENTS STARTING YEAR 7?

I would say enjoy the journey. Each stage of your Senior School journey is challenging but also lots of fun. You are presented with so many opportunities along the way that you should grasp wholeheartedly. By taking these opportunities and stepping out of your comfort zone you are able to grow as a person and make the most out of your school experience. In addition, keep an open mind and be friendly to everyone. Everyone is in the same boat and you’re all on this journey together. Be open to making new friends, as friendships are the most valuable thing you’ll gain from your school experience.

SERVICE CAPTAIN

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO BECOME INVOLVED IN COMMUNITY SERVICE?

Community Service provides us with opportunities to advocate and be involved in worthy issues – something I always felt was important in this day and age. As young changemakers we have a responsibility to take action on issues that face our global community such as climate change and social inequality because, if we don’t act, who will? Service allows us to ‘act local and think global’ whilst building a bridge of understanding with those around us. This is what truly makes Service so special!

WHICH SERVICE LEARNING EXPERIENCE HAS IMPACTED YOU THE MOST AND WHY?

There are so many, it’s really hard to pick one! Earlier this year, I was a volunteer for the Boab Network which partners with the Mowanjum community near Derby. I got to accompany students from Mowanjum who were visiting Perth for the first time. We toured the city and Fremantle, did some kayaking and ended each day with a swim at the beach. It was such a fun day filled with so many activities and building positive relationships. This really emphasised how Service strengthens communities and that it’s the little things that can have larger impacts. During this experience I also learned so much about indigenous culture, revealing how Service overlaps with other areas such as reconciliation.

WHAT IS THE MOST REWARDING PART OF PARTICIPATING IN COMMUNITY SERVICE?

Service allows you to grow as a person in many ways. You develop emotional intelligence, empathy, teamwork, collaboration, and so many other leadership skills. It also gives you first-hand experience of how your actions, big or small, can have a positive impact. Every Service experience I have always teaches me something new and it’s so nice to see how Service can bring people together, allowing us to act with our hearts and minds.

WHY DO YOU FEEL THAT EVERYONE SHOULD GET INVOLVED IN SERVICE?

With Service, you can channel any of your interests into a positive impact for the community. Whether this is sport, arts, social justice, reconciliation, or the environment, there are opportunities in every area! Service can also come in so many different forms – it can start from advocacy and spreading awareness about issues you are passionate about in your local community to much larger projects and direct action. Service truly makes you think outside the box about how you can be the change!

WHO IS YOUR SPORTING HERO AND WHY DO YOU LOOK UP TO THEM?

My sporting hero is Sydney McLaughlin, an American 400m hurdler who currently holds the Olympic and world record in this event. McLaughlin is a phenomenal talent who is only 23 years old. I look up to Sydney as her ethos and dedication to the sport are genius at such a young age which inspires me to be my best. Just watching her amazing progress over the last few years is remarkable.

IF YOU WERE TO GO TO THE OLYMPICS, WHICH SPORT WOULD YOU COMPETE IN?

If I went to the Olympics, I would want to compete in the 400m sprint as this is my favourite event. I have always wanted to try pole vault as a challenge, however, I’m not there yet, maybe that can be my next target. Many hours have been spent watching the Olympics and Commonwealth Games and I am in awe of all the talent among these athletes.

HOW CAN THE SKILLS LEARNED WHEN PLAYING A SPORT APPLY TO OTHER ASPECTS OF LIFE?

As sport plays a major role in my life, I wouldn’t know what to do without it. The dedication and commitment to succeed can be applied in all aspects of life. Things haven’t always gone according to plan in sport for me – and I have experienced a number of injuries – however that tends to happen in life. These hiccups in life only make us more resilient and determined to succeed; they allow us to be realistic with setting and reaching goals. It is all part of life’s journey.

WHAT PIECE OF ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE WHO IS STARTING THEIR JOURNEY IN SPORT?

If anyone is starting their journey in sport, my advice would be to give everything a go and you will find your passion and what you love. Even in individual sports there is always a team behind you, whether it be a coach, family, or your school. In a sporting community, everyone is there for each other. Things typically don’t always go to plan, however, that is the learning experience of trying new sports and being spontaneous. You don’t have to be the best to achieve success, it is your own personal journey. When trying something new, don’t give up too soon, because not everything can happen overnight.

WELLBEING

WHAT DOES THE WORD “WELLBEING” MEAN TO YOU?

To me, wellbeing means that someone is happy, comfortable, and content with who they are and in their life. This can include having a network of friends, enjoying school, being balanced, having a sense of belonging, and so much more. It’s not easy though, and we’ve all experienced how hard and tiring it can sometimes be to do these things. But another aspect of wellbeing is to have the strength to carry on and see the positives in a situation.

HOW CAN WE HELP LOOK AFTER OUR OWN WELLBEING?

There are so many different ways we can look after our wellbeing and everyone is so different. The main thing is to do what you love. This may be to go to the beach, see your friends, go for a walk, or go to the gym. Most importantly, having a positive mindset can change so much; we can lower stress levels, help build healthy relationships, and so many more things. To have a positive mindset, you need to be optimistic about the world around you, always thinking about how things benefit you or challenge you.

WHAT ARE SOME STUDENT-LED COMMITTEES THAT YOU’RE EXCITED TO SEE MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN THE SCHOOL?

It’s so incredible to see how in 2022 we are seeing so many young people fighting and working towards making a difference. The Each for Equal Committee has achieved so many incredible things. Led by the amazing Hayden, it has worked towards creating a better and more inclusive school environment for all. As well as the Service Wellbeing Committee, we seek to support the other committees and organise events that spread awareness about important topics such as “R U OK?” Day and MAD Week,

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE ROOM IN THE LIGHTHOUSE AND WHY?

My favourite room in the Lighthouse is definitely the Meditation Room, as it’s a really nice place to be in after a long day. Especially when school gets stressful, it’s one of my favourite rooms to go to when I need a recharge or to take a step back from the stress.

PIPE BAND REPORT

It was great to get back to most of our regular performances this year, with the band playing at our first ANZAC parade in the Perth CBD since 2019! We managed to get our 5 seconds of fame with the band making it onto the news and live TV. As a result of COVID restrictions easing, the Pipe Band has been able to play at almost every event that is usually on our calendar, except for Quarry. This has included the Vyner Brooke Memorial Service, Head of the River, and many more.

The Pipe Band’s reputation as a vital part of PLC and its lifeblood has truly lived up to expectations, providing us all with a place to laugh and build long-lasting friendships. Playing the pipes and drums isn’t just about making sure that Scotland the Brave echoes off of every surface possible, but also about conjuring up the sense of community that lies within every PLC student. It’s about playing at Head of the River on the banks of Champion Lakes and pushing that lone PLC sculler to sprint to the end and win their race. It’s about helping each other perfect the positioning of our glengarries (two fingers above the left eyebrow). It’s about the hustle and bustle surrounding the annual planning of our Speech Night display. Pipe Band is more than just the pipes and drums. This year has proven to us, as Year 12s, just how much Pipe Band has left a mark on us and how being a part of the Pipe Band community at PLC has made our time here even more memorable.

We would like to thank everyone in both Senior Pipe Band and Pipe Band 2 for all the hard work and commitment they put into every practice and performance. Getting changed in and out of all the uniform isn’t easy! We would also like to thank Ms Kirby, Mr Stulpner, and Mrs Franetovich for all they do for us – it’s not an easy task keeping us all in line but you all make the early mornings worth it. As Year 12s, leaving the band feels like leaving a family behind. The community and friendships created in the band are like no other and we know the time we have spent together in Minora House will be cherished.
