LETTER FROM THE

President

Dear Friends of Presentation,

In this issue we celebrate the remarkable accomplishments of the Class of 2020. And while they will forever be connected with the pandemic, the Class of 2020 will be remembered for their tenacity, strength, creativity and compassion. Individually, they are accomplished scholars, inventors, champions, artists, advocates, and changemakers; collectively they represent everything Presentation holds dear - they are women of conviction who stand for something bigger. As they embark on this next chapter of their lives in a world filled with so much uncertainty, I am filled with hope knowing that they are equipped to be the leaders our world needs. Congratulations Class of 2020! Pres continues to be an extraordinary school for girls to learn. To lead. To serve. To Shine. Faced with the innumerable challenges of the pandemic, we swiftly and successfully pivoted to distance learning last spring, and launched this fall in a fully remote environment. And, while we are reimagining our in-person traditions online, the Panther spirit cannot be contained. We’ve been focused on finding ways to safely get students back to campus. Under guidance from health officials, we have voluntary stable cohorts of students back on campus for programming ranging from academic support services and spiritual retreats to athletic training and performing arts and we continue to roll-out more opportunities for students to reconnect. We are especially sensitive to the unique financial challenges associated with the pandemic for our families and we are focused on ensuring an equitable experience for all. We’ve purchased Internet-enabled iPads for students without stable Internet access at home, we are providing groceries for families experiencing food instability, and the Board of Directors set aside additional funds to support families in need of emergency financial aid. Thanks to these efforts, no student will be forced to leave Pres due to the challenges of the pandemic. All of this is possible thanks to your ongoing generosity for which we are so grateful. As the uncertainty of the pandemic continues, if you are in a position to help us, we would be so grateful for your support. Our inclusive and welcoming community is a true hallmark of Pres. And we love to come together to celebrate, so our staff and volunteers have been working hard to bring creative opportunities to connect throughout this experience. The Parent Guild is serving as mentors to welcome new parents to Pres, our Alumnae Committee is hosting an online social meet-ups and LAMP continues to reach out to families to ensure you know that your Pres family is always here for you. It is this indomitable spirit that will carry us through these challenging times, and while I am enjoying these virtual activities, I look forward to the time when we will be able to safely return to campus for in-person events. All of this is possible thanks to our dedicated faculty, staff and administration who are guided by their commitment to our students and passion for ensuring that our students have the best possible high school experience in spite of these challenging circumstances. They know that while the pandemic will pass, these students won’t get a do-over on their high school experience, and we are so blessed by their service and leadership! As this year comes to close, my heart is filled with optimism, gratitude and pride. The hard work and focused dedication to serving our students continues at Pres as it has for nearly 60 years. We exist to provide an exceptional all-girls education which is rooted in the Catholic tradition and inspired by the vision and the legacy of our beloved foundress Nano Nagle, who gave up everything and risked her freedom to educate the children who were cast off by society. I am honored to continue this critical mission with each of you and look forward to seeing you soon! In Partnership,

Holly Elkins President

LETTER FROM THE

Principal

Dear Friends of Presentation,

Nano Nagle, the foundress of the Sisters of the Presentation, believed that education could be a tool for liberation. In the face of a pandemic, wide-sweeping shelter-in-place orders, and a complete change to life and school as we know it, our students, faculty, and staff continue to carry Nano’s lantern forward. Each day our students log into their virtual classes, volunteer to help others, and commit to becoming their best selves. While so much has changed in our world in such a short time, Presentation’s mission is steadfast and our students have proven themselves to be resilient, faithful, and innovative leaders our world needs now more than ever. This is particularly true of the Class of 2020. We are incredibly proud of their many accomplishments, awards, and college acceptances. More importantly, we are proud of the faith-filled, intellectually competent young women they have become. They leave Presentation educated for life and with a renewed perspective of service and living in community. Our students continue to be guided by Presentation’s exceptional faculty and staff, who like all educators in our country, are working hard to balance their own families’ needs with serving their students. Last spring, our faculty and staff quickly made the transition from in-person to remote learning and have since committed themselves to professional development to ensure that Presentation’s exceptional academic and co-curricular programs remain uncompromised during this unprecedented time. Even more, our instruction has been enhanced with opportunities to make global connections through virtual visits like one from an environmental engineer solving water poverty issues in Kenya. And, our program directors have innovated the student experience as we saw with our first-ever hybrid main stage theater production of Almost, Maine. Finally, I’m excited for Presentation’s future. This year, we affirmed our mission with a new vision statement for the school that will guide our strategic planning and renewed our commitments to diversity, equity and inclusion. These commitments will guide us as our school continues to grow and innovate. A great lesson of this pandemic is that society works best when we are in community, working together, and serving one another. I am grateful each day to have you all in our community. Pray for us as we continue to navigate these uncertain times and carry the ministry of Nano Nagle and the Sisters of the Presentation. I wish you and your family a blessed Christmas and a new year filled with joy and hope. In partnership,

Katherine Georgiev Principal

DIVERSITY EQUITY & INCLUSION We have made a commitment to improving our Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion efforts and ensuring Pres is a welcoming and inclusive place for all. To kick-off this effort, early this calendar year we hosted a Community Development Week, which focused on diversity, and included student-led workshops attended by all members of the community, including our faculty and staff. Parents were also invited to attend a workshop led by Dr. Sandra “Chap” Chapman, who served as our keynote speaker for the week. In May, a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion statement was created, and in June, a DEI Action Plan was initiated which focuses on the following areas: Academics and Curriculum Ensuring our curriculum represents voices of color and diverse historical moments in time.

Student Experience Ensuring an equitable experience for all Presentation students. We are committed to making our campus a safe space for all people.

Community Development Auditing and improving hiring practices and our diversity on campus; provide on-going professional development in microaggressions for faculty, staff, students, and Board members.

Updates are provided quarterly and can be found on our DEI web page. We are just getting started and welcome your participation. If you’re interested in getting involved in a committee or volunteering your time, please contact Crystal Catalan, Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at ccatalan@presentationhs.org.

NCAA SIGNING DAY

Four Pres Athletes Sign at NCAA Signing Day

On NCAA National Signing Day on November 11, 2020, four Pres seniors signed with colleges and will continue their athletic careers at the collegiate level. These athletes have not only been great representatives of Presentation Athletics and their respective programs but also the Presentation community. Sophia Harvey is a four-year water polo player for the Panthers and an All-WCAL and All-CCS performer. She was named team captain during her junior year (2019) and led the Panthers to their most successful season in the program’s history; capped by the first Central Coast Section (CCS) Championship in the program’s history. “I am most looking forward to competing at the Division I level and it’s competitiveness,” Sophia said. Along with her water polo resume, Sophia was also a two time team captain of our varsity lacrosse team and was named to the All-League team last year. Sophia will continue her water polo career at Santa Clara University in the fall of 2021! Congratulations, Sophia!

Lauren Zontos is a four-year varsity goalkeeper for the Panthers and a big key to the program’s success. As a freshman, Lauren was named WCAL goalkeeper of the year and WCAL 1st team and this was just the beginning of Lauren’s accolades. During her sophomore year, Lauren was again named WCAL goalkeeper of the year, WCAL 1st team, WCAL sophomore of the Year and CCS co-player of the year. Last year as a junior, Lauren made it a three peat and was again named WCAL goalkeeper of the year and WCAL 1st team. “My time playing soccer at Presentation has been a great experience and I am very thankful for my coaches and teammates that have helped me grow throughout the years,” Lauren said. “I am most excited to keep growing in my soccer career and to play the sport I love at the next level.” Lauren will be continuing her soccer career and passion for the game next year at Santa Clara University! Congratulations, Lauren! Sarah Shaw has been an anchor at goal for our water polo program during her Presentation career. In 2019, Sarah helped lead the Panthers toward their first-ever CCS Championship in program history. Sarah also created and led our “Splash Out Cancer Game” fundraiser; where she designed decals, wristbands, hosted bake sales, managed a donation table and had each team wear pink caps where 100% of the proceeds went to support breast cancer research. “I am most excited about getting to play water polo at a competitive level at an amazing school and having the opportunity to explore a different part of the country,” Sarah said. Sarah will be continuing her athletic and academic career at Villanova University next year! Congratulations, Sarah! Grayson Vives has been on the varsity softball team since freshman year and has helped the Panthers become CIF State Academic Team Champions with a 3.83 team GPA and earned the #1 seed in the CCS Open Division in 2019. Grayson was named team captain as a junior and has also been a part of campus ministry all four years while maintaining an astounding 4.44 GPA! “I am so grateful for the close friendships I've made with my teammates on and off the field, and I would say my greatest accomplishment was calling pitches during our St. Francis game during my Sophomore year,” Grayson said. “That game was such an amazing feat of teamwork and it felt so good to win that game especially after it went into extra innings!” Grayson will continue athletically and academically at Yale in 2021! Congratulations, Grayson! WINTER 2015 | 9

Celebrating the Class of

Due to COVID-19, the 2020 school year ended in a way no one could have ever predicted—off-campus and without gatherings. Although it was difficult for all of us not to be together, the Class of 2020 showed outstanding leadership and grace as they adapted to our new "normal." Our faculty and staff rallied together to bring the best possible experiences to our seniors. Experiences included at-home deliveries of caps, gowns, beach balls, and lawn signs; a drive-thru graduation parade through campus; and an outside photo opportunity as they crossed a decorated stage in front of campus to the tune of pomp and circumstance. No, it wasn't traditional graduation, but at the moment, it was a beautiful way to celebrate our seniors. The class was also honored with a YouTube live virtual ceremony where their friends and family could join in to celebrate with them from anywhere in the world. The San Jose Earthquakes even got in on the fun by displaying their images on the jumbotron all-day on June 6.

PRES STUDENTS LEAD THE WAY FOR WOMEN IN STEM Rithu Paramesh ‘20 and Ria Nawathe ‘20 are paving the way and inspiring the community with their efforts in STEM. Rithu was actively involved in robotics, science, and clubs, and Ria has been working diligently on a science project throughout her high school years that won several awards. According to the Education Commission, between 2017 and 2027, the number of STEM jobs will grow 13%, compared to 9% for non-STEM jobs—with positions in computing, engineering, and advanced manufacturing leading the way. This is good news for Pres students who continue to excel in these fields, and are ready to take their seat at the table. “Pres has allowed me to grow as a person, building my confidence and giving me boundless opportunities to explore any field I wanted. I have been able to grow my skills in engineering and design through our robotics program, which has taught me how to code, how to construct electrical systems, how to design and operate control systems overall,

Rithu Paramesh '20

Ria Nawathe '20

and how to lead technical groups. I have been fortunate enough to grow both my technical and management skills, which also sparked my interest in STEM,” Rithu said. In the summer of 2019, Rithu attended Garcia Summer Scholars; a program hosted by Stony Brook University in New York. The goal of the Garcia pre-college program is to convey to young students and their teachers the excitement of polymer materials research, to suggest possible career options, and to provide the opportunity to use polymer science to enhance the regular science teaching curriculum. Rithu got to perform research on the forefront of polymer science and technology with the Garcia faculty and staff. “It was an amazing experience,” Rithu said. “They taught us proper lab procedures, had us write a lab report, and gave us lectures on cutting-edge research in a variety of fields that we could choose to work on.” Rithu’s project was to use polymer gels, engineered to fill the aneurysm and promote healing. Rithu’s group tested using a silicone model of a real aneurysm and held the aneurysm under pulsatile flow to stimulate blood flow. The students were able to work with the university hospital to test and collect data, as well as make adjustments and goals for the project at hand. Concluding their research, Rithu’s team was selected to present at the 2019 Materials Research Society Fall Meeting and Exhibit (an international conference of the latest research in materials PRES | 31

research). They presented their work to industry professionals and university researchers. Ria Nawathe is a recent Presentation graduate who has been working hard on science research. “What has inspired my interest in STEM is its far-reaching ability to improve quality of life,” said Ria. Ria, her sister Tanaya (also a Pres alumna), and Keshav (another student from Homestead High School), conducted research to investigate the link between oxidative phosphorylation, a metabolic process, and microgravityinduced atrophy. The implications of this research extend from developing therapies that prevent astronaut muscle loss in space to aiding muscular dystrophy patients on Earth. This project was submitted through various competitions and was awarded for the following: • Winner of NASA GeneLab for High Schools Research Competition • 1st Place, American Society for Gravitational and Space Research International Conference Poster Competition • Honorable Mention Award in Regulated Research Institution Category, Synopsys Science Fair According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 93 out of 100 STEM occupations had wages above the national average and California added nearly 161,000 STEM jobs since 2009. “Growing up in the Bay Area has definitely helped spark my interest in STEM, as well as having parents who both work in the tech industry,” Rithu said. “I’ve always been an engineering girl.” Both students expressed how STEM requires innovation, new ideas, and believe that women bring a great asset and necessity, as well as a different perspective to the field. “I think it’s important for women to work wherever they want to, without boundaries or limitations,” Rithu said. “For those women who wish to work in STEM, it should be an unhindered path.” UNESDOC says that only around 30% of female students in higher education choose STEM-related fields of study. Not only are the gender gaps more apparent in higher

education, but female students represent only 35% of all students enrolled in a STEM-related field, globally. “It’s important for more women to become involved in STEM careers because the world is currently being explained through a male perspective, our knowledge of the universe colored and shaped by male beliefs,” said Ria. “These biases fundamentally dominate and inform the way research is conducted—they shape what questions are explored, what innovations and developed, what problems are prioritized.” According to UNESDOC, the under-representation of women in STEM translates into the loss of a critical mass of talent, thoughts and ideas, which hinders countries from reaching their maximum development potential. The work done this year by Ria and Rithu has been phenomenal. We look forward to the great things they will be contributing to their communities and our world. Ria is attending UCLA as a Molecular, Cell, and Developmental Biology major. In the future, she hopes to pursue a career in medicine. Rithu is attending UC Berkeley, pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.

According to Forbes magazine, the 10-best-paying STEM jobs for recent grads include: Petroleum Engineer Nuclear Engineer Marine Engineer Chemical Engineer Computer and Information Research Scientist Aerospace Engineer Marine Architect Nuclear Medicine Technologist Business Intelligence Analyst Software Developer, Systems Software

We Are the Light by Eric Buell, Director of Catholic Identity As the 2019-2020 school year began, our faculty and staff gathered to examine 25 quotes from the letters of venerable Nano Nagle. The intent of this exercise was to adopt a quote from our foundress in order to keep our mission front and center for our students. One quote that was taken by a number of faculty declared: “The best works meet with the greatest crosses.” No one could have guessed how the school year would have ended when a variety of committees collaborated to choose our school theme for this year: “We Are the Light.” Looking to capture the spirit of Nano Nagle venturing continually out into uncertain conditions, guided by the light of her lantern and the convictions of her faith in Jesus, she zealously dedicated herself to the education of the forgotten. During our liturgical celebrations, our students began each Mass or prayer service singing Unspoken’s “Start a Fire” and ended each Mass joyfully proclaiming “This Little Light of Mine.” Guided by Nano’s initial footsteps, Presentation graduates are encouraged to be women of faith and intelligence, and committed to their personal growth and the service to PRES | 34

others. In the pages of this magazine you will see countless examples of our senior class who exemplified our theme and our graduation outcomes, especially those seniors receiving special honors including our Nano Nagle award recipient, Kathy Barajas ’20. In our first quarter, students reflected with their mentors on what it means to walk in the light of God and had the opportunity to nominate students who reflected this core idea. Our students nominated 285 unique individuals as people who were clear examples. In addition to Kathy Barajas ’20, our students honored three others. Kiara Francisco ’21 who was highlighted for constantly strengthening her relationships and being a continued positive presence for her friends and peers. Mrudula Chodavarapu ’22 was honored for creating an organization that makes beanies for cancer patients. Danica Kubota ’23 was nominated by her peers as they continually called out her generosity and positive presence to everyone she passes in the hallways. Paige Jackson ’21 and Faguni Gupta ’21 served as leaders of the freshman retreat. Paige gave a heartfelt talk to the freshmen regarding her faith in God and how she nourishes

that faith through prayer and community. Faguni Gupta ’21 gave an inspirational talk on the legacy of Nano Nagle, and how Faguni finds inspiration in the life, strength, courage and faith of Nano Nagle. Sonya Smith ’20 spoke about personal challenges that could have interfered with faith, but how she found great strength in God through her relationships and in the faith community at Pres. Overall, there were 22 peer ministers who served as small group leaders on freshman retreat, and who led the freshmen in community-building activities, faith sharing and reflection. As 2020 began, our focus turned to fine-tuning the light within. We were delighted to welcome Dr. Sandra (Chap) Chapman from Little Red School House & Elisabeth Irwin High School in New York, who helped our students recognize the inherent dignity in every human person through our Community Development Week, which focused on diversity. Throughout the week, our students and faculty participated in a culture fair, student panels, and other programs which highlighted the rich diversity represented in our faith community. In the months leading up to the week, students spent time developing their own workshops to lead for

their peers and faculty on Student Development Day, where they had the opportunity to share an aspect of their own light within, while teaching all attendees how to be compassionate, empathetic, and understanding of the light shining too, within all people, across an array of topics. As we closed our final quarter together, our theme, “We Are the Light” discussed our call to be the light for the world and how our graduates develop and nurture their own intelligence, faith, growth and ability to serve. What better way to “shine” in these past two months than to sacrifice all of our “normal” ways of being Presentation, for the health and safety of one other. We are tremendously proud of the students who walked the halls this year and who had to create Presentation in the confines of their own home. I think this makes sense though, as it was Nano Nagle herself who went from home to home, seeking children in need of education. The extended Presentation community should be proud that we all have contributed to continuing her work even while separated from our campus and each other. PRES | 35

Lantern League Members The Lantern League is a women’s giving circle – a group of like-minded, dedicated women who raise money, pool resources and grant money. The Lantern League works to break down barriers that would exclude young women from educational and developmental opportunities – particularly, financial barriers. Specifically, the Lantern League funds programs that improve the quality of life for women and girls within the greater Bay Area.
