PF INTERNATIONAL KART CIRCUIT

The CIK-FIA international season was drawn to a close by the OK and OK-Junior World Championships one-shot event in England, at the PFI circuit - Paul Fletcher International Kart Circuit – set in the Lincolnshire countryside, near the town of Brandon, not far from Nottingham. The 1,382 metre circuit, with a fast and spectacular intersection featuring an underpass and the bridge above it, saw 181 drivers from 30 countries in 5 continents take part, with the competitors in each class prepared to give battle in order to be crowned CIK-FIA World Champion.

The reigning world champions in the two categories are Pedro Hiltbrand, winner of the OK category in 2016 with CRG, and Victor Martins, champion in the Junior category in 2016 with Kosmic. In the 2017 European Championship the title holders are Sami Taoufik (FA Kart-Vortex-LeCont) in OK and Jonny Edgar (Exprit-TM Racing-Vega) in OK-Junior.

KEIRLE SORPRENDE TUTTI ED E’ CAMPIONE DEL MONDO IN OK KEIRLE SURPRISES EVERYONE TO BECOME OK WORLD CHAMPION

In the main, British drivers proved fastest on the PFI circuit in Brandon, although even those with less experience of the track were certainly not excluded and, indeed, competition was rife among the many international stars that took part in the event. The official practice sessions in the OK class saw England’s Callum Bradshaw (CRG-Parilla-LeCont) record the fastest time, 28 thousandths of a second ahead of Russia’s Pavel Bulantev (Tony Kart-VortexLeCont), followed by Finland’s Juho Valtanen (Kosmic-Vortex-LeCont). There was a surprise in the heats, in which another English driver, Danny Keirle (Zanardi-Parilla-LeCont), taking part in his first CIK-FIA race, made a name for himself, winning four of the five heats after finishing seventh in practice and taking pole position in the Final. Keirle’s main rival was the reigning World Champion, Spain’s Pedro Hiltbrand (Tony Kart-Vortex-LeCont), who recovered brilliantly from eighteenth fastest in practice to second place following the heats. However, another safe bet to star in the PFI event, England’s former World Champion Tom Joyner (Zanardi-Parilla-LeCont), dropped out of the running following an accident in one of the heats. Keirle dominated the Final, leading from start to finish, while among the other protagonists, Hiltbrand was forced to retire due to technical problems. Keirle’s greatest challenge came from his team-mate Esteban Muth, although the latter was never able to mount a proper attack. In the end Keirle took the win, while Muth finished second, but was relegated to tenth place after being awarded a 10 second penalty. Second place was inherited by Spain’s David Vidales (Tony Kart-Vortex-LeCont), who also finished second in the 2016 World Junior Championship, while Juho Valtanen finished third.

The start of the PFI event saw several drivers in the Junior class come to the fore. The two quickest in the official practice sessions were British drivers Harry Thompson (FA Kart-Vortex-Vega) and Christopher Lulham (Exprit-TM Racing-Vega), separated by just 3 thousandths of a second, while third place went to Italian Francesco Raffele Pizzi (Exprit-Vortex-Vega) ahead of Australian Jack Doohan (FA Kart-Vortex-Vega). The heats confirmed Thompson’s good form, earning him pole position in the Final, with Lulham just behind. However, another English driver called Dexter Patterson (Exprit-TM RacingVega), Lulham’s team mate, also put in an impressive performance, climbing places from tenth in practice thanks to two wins and two second places in the heats. In the Final, after an initial duel between Thompson and Barbados’ Zane Maloney (FA Kart-Vortex-Vega), Dexter Patterson managed to take the lead and cross the finish line in first place, thereby winning the Junior World Championship. Lulham, who challenged Patterson right up to the end, finished in second place, while third place went to Thompson, meaning that there was an all-English podium.
