Everything about Heidelberg Speedmaster CX 102 is impressive Ramesh Kejriwal confirms the unparalleled performance of Heidelberg Speedmaster CX 102 “We are truly excited about our latest acquisition, the Heidelberg Speedmaster CX102. Everything about the CX 102 press is impressive – unparalleled performance, enhanced productivity and best print quality,” says Ramesh Kejriwal, Chairman Parksons Packaging, on the post-installation performance of India’s first Speedmaster CX 102 six-colour press. An automation proponent, Ramesh Kejriwal is duly impressed with the Heidelberg Speedmaster CX102’s ‘Prinect Inpress Control’, which controls print quality while the sheets are on fly, thereby reducing wastage and shortening make-ready times. “This is one of the most technically evolved solutions in the printing Industry. The need of the hour is more automation and lesser manual interference. The Speedmaster CX102 fits this requirement to a tee. Our make-ready times are less than 15 minutes now, and we need less than 80 waste sheets for colour matching, this saves us large volumes of ink and paper,” says the happy client.

“This is one of the most technically evolved solutions in the printing Industry. The need of the hour is more automation and lesser manual interference. The Speedmaster CX102 fits this requirement to a tee.” – Ramesh Kejriwal

The alliance between Heidelberg and Parksons, a signature brand in the packaging industry, spans three decades. Over the years, Parksons has procured 7 brand new Heidelberg presses for its production units at Daman and Pune. Endowed with features for optimum productivity and quality, the Speedmaster CX102 is a sure-fire winner all the way. The chairman of one of the most dynamic print houses in the country believes firmly that value

comes at a premium. “We are long time customers of Heidelberg, since the 80’s. So, we are well aware that Heidelberg presses come at a premium. But, the premium is entirely justified when you look at the cost savings and competitive advantage we enjoy,” he says. The Speedmaster CX102 has helped the company achieve significant cost savings, related to production. “Before buying the Speedmaster CX102, we were running three production shifts 24X7 non-stop. But, now we have eliminated one shift totally, saving on labour, electricity and other consumables, thereby maximizing profits and productivity. The underlying economics is compelling. The corollary is we achieved our target numbers with ease. Buying the CX102 has been our best business decision in recent years”, Ramesh Kejriwal states emphatically. Vinod Kela, General Manager of the Parksons Packaging plant at Daman reaffirms Kejriwal’s statement, “Thanks to the Speedmaster CX102, we are running just 2 shifts now. With the arrival of CX102, the Daman unit is now more energy efficient and cost-effective.” The Speedmaster CX102 experience has further forged the bond between Heidelberg and Parksons. Mr. Ramesh Kejriwal also hinted that he will be signing up for 2 more new Speedmaster CX 102 presses with Heidelberg shortly.

Enfocus Connect 13 provides job submission ease for designers and control for printers Enfocus has recently announced the release of Connect 13, the next major upgrade to its Enfocus Connect product line. Available immediately, Connect 13 features a number of workflow and delivery enhancements for print service providers, while giving designers an easy-to-use solution for delivering pressready PDF files to their print service provider.

explains Michael Reiher, Enfocus Connect Product Manager. “However, there are many obstacles to this goal and we believe that, if we can eliminate technical barriers and give control to the printer, designers will encounter fewer hassles, incoming jobs will flow faster through production, proofing cycles are reduced and everyone comes out a winner.”

Connect streamlines the file preparation and submission process for both designers and printers—enabling each party to focus on what they do best.

Since its release in 2013, Enfocus Connect has been used to ensure optimal quality control and consistency in PDF creation and to ensure successful delivery of that PDF to remote servers. Connect encapsulates all the settings for job delivery into a custom

For the printer responsible for producing the job, Connect enables them to control all the settings for PDF creation and verification, job ticketing and final job submission into their production facility. Designers benefit by eliminating the need to learn layout production settings, deal with FTP addresses or logon credentials. The end result is designers can spend their time and energy creating pieces with maximum impact, while the printer gets press-ready files first time, every time. “Printers and designers are working towards the same goal: easily getting their files into production to meet critical deadlines,”

application called a Connector. Once a Connector is created, even novice users can use it to ensure the quality and consistency of their PDF. New features in Connect 13 focus on improved ease of use and added control for the print service provider. The new Connector features an advanced structure that makes it easier to install, manage and access Connectors for all users. New workflow and control functions in Connect 13 allow users to specify delivery rules based on file type, making it easy for a print service provider to control which file types they will

accept before the customer submits them. In addition, there are expanded controls for PDFs creation, a simplified XML job ticket format, support for all Enfocus PitStop preflight report styles and more. A more detailed list can be consulted on the Enfocus Connect web page. Enfocus has created a demo site that gives print service providers and designers a chance to experience the heart of Connect 13 - the Connector. The demo site shows how a fictitious print service provider can generate branded Connectors and offer them as a value-added service to its clients. Demonstration Connectors can be downloaded, installed and run right from the site, showing the ease with which Connectors can be used by end users. Customers with a maintenance contract and customers who purchased any Connect 12 product after December 1, 2014 will receive the Connect 13 upgrade at no charge.

Ashokan Krishnamoorthy at the Seminar

Heidelberg India organized a seminar on ‘prepress’ at Sivakasi, at the Sivakasi Master Printer Association Hall. The event witnessed huge participation from close to 100 printers in and around the printing hub of South India. The seminar included sessions on prepress and Heidelberg solutions portfolio. Ashokan Krishnamoorthy, Deputy General Manager – Prepress Solutions, Heidelberg India, commented, “Sivakasi is ‘Home’ to Heidelberg. You can find Heidelberg machines in every nook and corner of this wonderful town. We appreciate the continued support of our eminent Sivakasi clients – Srinivasa Fine Arts, Bell Printers, SFA Print, Safire Printers, Lovely Offset Printers, and Orient lithographers. Prepress being a pivotal aspect for both commercial and packaging printing clients, we believe the seminar will impart immense value to the participants.” The seminar was followed by a two-day training session on prepress at the same venue. The session, conducted in batches, was interactive, as enthusiastic participants created their own prepress files with the help of Heidelberg’s Prinect Workflow. Heidelberg experts expounded on prepress tools and options, including the creation of qualified PDF, imposition, integration, colour correction, trapping and coating etc. Demos on various tools related to Packaging Workflow were also shown to the printers. Mohammed Rafi of Olympic quoted, “The training was informative and insightful. In our

line of business, last-minute corrections and pagination changes from the client’s side are inevitable, but with the Prinect’s PDF tool box, we can perform miracles outright.” Ashokan Krishnamoorthy added, “Driving customer value in an increasingly competitive landscape is the name of the game and Heidelberg is undoubtedly the ‘Master’ of the game. Today’s Print buyers are most demanding and to cater to their needs, printers spend considerable time on prepress for correction, imposition, editing and colour correction. But, with Heidelberg’s Prinect Workflow systems, the tasks can simplified, because Heidelberg, and only Heidelberg, has a comprehensive portfolio of Prinect workflow solutions for diverse requirements. Our Prinect workflow system has everything from print shop management to online customer management. You name it, we

have it...Prepress, digital print workflow, make-ready optimization, colour, quality, machine operation and a full range of service, where you can integrate digital and offset printing too. We plan to conduct more such Prinect training sessions across the country to create better awareness.” Ganesh Kumar, Senior Sales Manager of Heidelberg stated, “We have a firm footprint in Sivakasi with a strong base of Prepress, press and Postpress installations. The Heidelberg Speedmaster CD 102 press powers businesses at the Sivakasi Printing cluster, a central-government-aided facility to help any player in the industry execute print jobs at a nominal charge.” Mr. Marirajan, the President of Sivakasi Master Printer Association, expressed his gratitude to Heidelberg India for conducting the seminar and training sessions at Sivakasi.

Bodoni appoints APTEC official training partner for China pressSIGN Print Standardization solution by Bodoni Systems is used around the world to help printers to achieve the quality standards set by their clients in a fast and efficient manner. In a recent survey pressSIGN users claimed they saved 25% on make-ready times for colour critical jobs. To help printers achieve this level of efficiency in China and East Asia Bodoni has appointed APTEC as their exclusive partner to promote the pressSIGN certification program and Expert Training. The first 3 day training program in Mandarin takes place in Hong Kong from April 22ndto April 24th. APTEC is a non-profit organization dedicated to training in the Graphic Arts and are sponsored by the Hong Kong Printers Association. APTEC already provide G7 certification and training as well as training for FOGRA PSO and exclusive partner with Rochester Institute of Technology for the PSASM program. APTEC have been responsible for several summits regarding colour and print standardization. Ian Reid, Managing Director of Bodoni Systems, commented, “APTEC are the ideal partner to deliver the pressSIGN certification and training program in China and Asia. They are strategically placed in the region, have been using pressSIGN for many years and have all the expertise needed to deliver the most professional and sophisticated training programs. I look forward to working with them for many years.” Brenda Pang from APTEC said, “pressSIGN 6 is the most popular print standardization tool in China and it is our aim to help printers,

print consultants and brand managers to make the most of this sophisticated tool. It adds to the breadth of our training and certification work in China.” As a technology transfer centre, APTEC delivers the latest technologies in graphic technology through in-service training, technical conference, new technology testing and qualification program. In recent

years, APTEC strives to promote printing standardization. APTEC implemented three large-scale international conferences, including “Hong Kong Summit – Global Printing Standardization” in 2011 and “ICC Color Symposium” in 2013 and “Summit 2014 - Global Printing Standardization & Integrated Media” in 2014. Each conference attracted about 500 participants from printing and related practitioners.

India installed a Kodak Trendsetter 800 CtP. For them, the ability to repeat jobs with ease and deliver quality output were the key factors while deciding this machine. The Kodak Trendsetter CtP, apart from enabling Darpan to meet these demands, also won on the sustainability front. Maya Offset in Guwahati and Don Bosco Technical School in Shillong have also opted for Kodak Thermal CtP equipments. In a market dominated by Violet and CtCP

users, they chose to go with Kodak’s thermal technology because of higher print quality, upgradeability and superior imaging technology. Aloke Hazarika – Kodak’s Regional Sales Manager, East says, “Most of these customers chose Kodak’s thermal imaging technology for the ability to achieve high productivity and better quality imaging in today’s fast paced environment. With Kodak CtP equipments, customers now have an

option of eliminating the processor with Sonora Process Free plates. This means savings because it effectively eliminates chemistry, water and electricity consumption on the processor. This leads to tremendous saving on both money and time. It also reduces the errors as well as manpower requirement. All this translates into a more streamlined plate-making process and faster output with the same productivity as mainstream processed plates.”

Fujifilm: Focusing ‘Value from Innovation’ Fujifilm endeavours to do things the global way – bring in concepts which add value to not only save resources but also contribute to environment sustainability.

“Value From Innovation is Fujifilm’s new focus,” says Yasunobu Nishiyama, Managing Director, Fujifilm India, while interacting with PRESSIdeas in an exclusive interview. And how the global company plans to bring value from innovation for the needs of their customers and their satisfaction is through introduction of new products and new technologies.

Fujifilm plans to offer digital and wide format presses in coming one and a half years for conventional printers who are at cross roads for making new investments. These are the products which are already very successful in many international markets.

Key Notes : > Plans to do significant process corrections internally; ensure easier availability of products to Indian customers. > To expand presence in packaging industry with Flenex Excel – plates for high quality outputs and environmental sustainability. > High end CtP plates to bring lot of impact in the overall print process.

February 2015

Also present during the meeting was S.M. Ramprasad, Asistant Vice President, Graphic Arts Division, Fujifilm India. Speaking on the Indian Graphic Arts market, he sees a good growth opportunity. “If you look at today’s market situation, Fujifilm is in a position where we see a huge opportunity to grow,” says Ramprasad. “Our market share in the conventional business is in the range of 10 to 15%. If we look at the market dynamics as it is today, CtP plates are sold as a commodity than as a brand or as a product that can add value to the final printed product and thereby increase profitability. Plate making and pre-press cost is hardly 3% of the overall print process. But unfortunately more focus was given to reduce this cost, completely forgetting to note the value it can add to the final printed product thereby bringing huge cost savings in the entire print process itself. So our endeavour now is to do things the way it is being done worldwide and bring in those

concept in terms of premium plates which adds value per se. This will not only save resources but also contribute to environment sustainability,” he explains. Fujifilm’s entire focus is now to drive these two initiatives and gain its market share aggressively. For this, it plans to do significant process corrections internally. It will ensure easy availability of these products to Indian customers than what it was earlier.

Key focus for FY 2015 “We have few new solutions for this conventional market. We have launched new water washable flexo plates for the packaging industry with a brand name as Flenex Excel which will give high quality outputs, contribute to environmental sustainability and allow Fujifilm India to expand our presence in the packaging industry. So first the high end CtP plates which can bring lot of impact in the overall print process and second the new flexo plates – both these products are our key focus in FY 2015,” reveals Ramprasad. He also tells about Fujifilm’s plans to reposition their wide format printer. “Today many of the conventional printers are at cross roads for making new investments for expansion and growth. Fujifilm

pressideas/ digital

will offer two solutions for these customers – a digital press and a wide format press; starting with the entry level Aquity range of wide format printers which goes up to high production industrial flat bed applications like On Print or signage applications like UV Star,” he says. These are the products that Fujifilm will launch in the next 12 to 18 months. These products are already very successful in many markets where they have already been launched. These products will be of great benefit to the commercial printers – be it the digital press which is closer to a commercial printer, or the roll to roll web press targeting the book printing segment. The wide format printers are an extension of the branding solutions that Fujifilm offers. These printers are based on Fujifilm’s in house UV ink technology and allow printers to print on virtually any medium, taking the branding solutions to a completely new level. “Our wide format printers can be used both for signage and commercial applications. There are many possibilities and opportunities offered by our products,” continues Ramprasad. He considers all conventional printers as potential buyers for their wide format printer or digital press. According to him, Photography also has reached saturation levels for conventional photo printing and sees this area as another great opportunity in coming days.

Plans for digital printing and packaging The launch of Flenex range of water washable flexo plates for the packaging segment is a major initiative by Fujifilm. The company expects a strong entry into this space enabled by the launch. It also looks forward to extending its digital solutions for the label segment by various measures including using existing customer contacts. “We have products for this segment also which will be launched in the next financial year. For the digital segment we will offer the web to web digital press in this year which will target the book publishers. We also have sheet fed digital press which is being customized for the Indian market and will be launched in the next financial year. We will use every opportunity to explore the possibility to develop and make a digital printer in India itself using our in-house print head technology and ink solutions, possibly with a tie-up with a local manufacturer. With

this we can address the needs of an Indian customer with a right product,” shares Ramprasad. Fujifilm enjoys a market share of 10 to 15 percent in the conventional Graphic Arts segments like CtP, plates, newspaper etc. “We are working on a very aggressive growth plan. Convention CtP business is our core area and we want to refine the entire dynamics of this business. We want to bring more value proposition to our customers,” foresees the company’s AVP, who thinks Indian customer is value conscious rather than the popular belief that he’s price conscious. “If we provide value they are willing to pay any price. So far the value proposition has not been clearly spelt out to the customer. Our products have established as one of the best products worldwide in the Graphic arts industry. So our market share has to be more than what we have today. It has to only grow from here,” he avers. Fujifilm has a very robust sales and service network across the country. Plans are on to expand the sales to fully utilize this network. Ramprasad feels the need to change the perception that Fujifilm is a key player in the prepress and photography segment only. “We are on this job right now. We have to take Fujifilm beyond only films, as a larger player in the Graphic arts market. All our endeavour will be to change the present perception. We will be focusing on the youth in the photography segment and in the Graphic arts industry we have lined up a number of new product launches, which will change the present perception about Fujifilm,” he avows. However, Yasunobu disagrees with the presence of this perception about Fujifilm elsewhere. “Fujifilm is a global player and this perception is not there in any other country, except in India. So we need to develop an India specific strategy to change this perception,” he feels. He further sums up the Indian market as definitely a ‘big, challenging, dynamic and diverse market’. Ramprasad has bigger plans to fit better in a cost conscious Indian market. “Our entire focus is to change this commodity selling to value selling. The concept of commodity selling suited some players

in the industry. We need to change this mindset of the customers to drive our point that Fujifilm does not sell a commodity but offers solutions that adds value to their final product. It’s challenging but it’s possible, since at the end of the day, it is the customer who wins. We are confident that Indian customers will adapt to this change,” he believes. “As a Japanese company Fujifilm was part of the government initiative to increase tie ups with Indian manufacturing industry and actively participate in various segments like infrastructure, manufacturing etc including the graphic arts industry. Our “make in India” plan is a step in this direction,” maintains Yasunobu.

Growth targets “For the graphic arts division we will aggressively work to triple our current revenue within the next three years- from the present Rs.150 crores to Rs.400 to 500 crores by 2017,” says Ramprasad. Overall, the Fujifilm business currently stands at Rs.1000 crores which is planned against a target of Rs.2000 crores in the next two year. Ramprasad has moved in from another Japanese company. His has been a smooth transition to Fujifilm without any cultural shock. “There are lot of synergies between both companies. We work together in promoting each others’ products. In that sense my current position is only an extension of my earlier job, except that the domain of the customers in the current job is more industrial from what it was earlier,” he says. Yasunobu speaks about investing a major part of Fujifilm’s revenues in research and development. He doesn’t deny the possibility of setting up a small R&D centre in India in near future. He looks forward to the ondemand book publishing segment. “The majority of the on demand printing has been for transaction printing like banks, telecom and financial institutional applications. This segment can considerably grow with the educational segment throwing up many opportunities. Though the traditional opportunities have flattened, the on-demand book publishing is a very prospective segment,” foresees Yasunobu.

Xerox with a difference in the Digital space Xerox is known for an impeccable service to its customers. The customers present across the globe are a satisfied community. A majority business of the company is through repeat customers. The company received about 60 percent repeat customers in the year 2014.

Xerox is one of the top industry players in the Digital arena. Today in the production digital, it is the player which is there from the start. The widest product range in unrivalled with a product line ranging from Rs.10 lakhs to right up to Rs.20 crores. In the entire digital space, there are many that cover a part of the space. Overall, Xerox has a wider coverage than most of the players and it is more representative of the Digital Production space. With a market share of over 30 percent in the Digital Production Printing, Xerox prides in being the catalyst of change which stays at the base of global Digital Printing. “Today, we can proudly claim that every customer in the Digital Printing space, at some point of time, must have been touched by Xerox technology,” says Balaji Rajagopalan, Executive Director, Technology Channels & International Business. “Today, about 60 percent of our customers are repeat customers. And with 30 percent market share, having this many repeat customers, speaks for itself about the ‘quality’ that Xerox is known for,” he adds. Xerox once heralded Digital Printing and has since expanded with one of the widest range of products in the segment. The industry well recognizes the price war within the highly competitive Digital Printing industry. Balaji is little concerned about

the price being a major factor driving the choice of products by customers. “We have been making policies that chiefly govern our long term goals. We never compromise on the fundamentals of quality, delivery, service and coverage etc. We have built a position over a period of 15-20 years. We have our uniqueness, we have our dimensions, we have our principles and value systems, we have our go to market and many other core features that make us stand out in the field. Once a customer comes to us, it becomes our top priority to make the relation more exciting for them. At the end of the day the customer is the one who gets the best. When the customer is happy, we consider ourselves successful,” smiles Balaji.

Standing apart from the competition When Xerox sees itself vis-a-vis other players in the market, it clearly distinguishes itself from them. “Twenty years ago the scenario was like, one can get one from the choice of quality, price and time. The market has changed from quality ‘or’ cost ‘or’ time to quality ‘and’ cost ‘and’ time. The world has changed. It is because the technology is changing, the market place is changing and the manufacturing system is changing. And interestingly it is changing to

the advantage of the customer,” elaborates Balaji. As for products, says Balaji, Xerox products are standardized to top level in the industry. At Print Pack 2015, they launched their latest Xerox Colour C70 Digital Press in the Indian market. “It is the first machine in its entire segment to save up to 75 percent in power consumption,” says Balaji, quickly adding, “It can also save up to 80 paise per print for the customer. The machine is equipped with very advanced features which bring a lot of advantages and efficiencies to the customer. The features are those which you only get in machines priced around Rs.40-50 lakhs. The C70 comes at around Rs.15 lakhs. Therefore, it is a great product for the entry-level customer who wants to make it big right from the start.” The Xerox Colour C70 Printer provides application versatility and professional image quality, and is flexible enough to grow with customer’s business. It’s an all-in-one solution that can boost productivity in any environment. Additionally, Simple Image Quality Adjustment (SIQA) toolkit allows for quick adjustment of image registration. It is a

true professional multifunction printer – print, copy, fax (optional) and scan, including scan to PC, USB or email, and mobile printing. Another product that Xerox showcased at Print Pack 2015 was the newly launched Phaser 7800 which is the only tabloid-size colour printer in its class that delivers the full complement of advanced capabilities today’s most graphic-intensive environments require. Now any business that produces large volumes of high-resolution output, such as advertising agencies, graphic design shops, marketing communications firms, photography studios and countless others, can keep more of their business-critical print jobs in-house with this new solution. control, and produces more precise colour registration. It gives superior performance, with black-and-white and colour output as fast as 45 ppm. The 2,25,000-page monthly duty cycle supports the heaviest office print volumes. Finishing options range from stacking and stapling with the flexibility to add separate hole punching, creasing, v-folding and booklet-making capabilities. The innovative Earth Smart feature allows users to choose via the print driver the most environmentally sensitive options for their job.

The unique programmes by Xerox “Every product we provide to the market are simply cutting edge. We have as much as 60 percent customers who are happy to be our customers and buy our products even at premium. We are different from the rest and this is a well known fact for our entire customer base,” continues Balaji. One such concept developed by Xerox is Eureka, which is the only system used by any such company worldwide. It is a knowledgebase of engineers. Every piece of information that comes the way of the engineer while serving the customers world over base is fed into the system as a common knowledgebase and stays with the company for ever and for future reference. Eureka is a global effort supporting multiple global languages with high staff participation which is today standing at around 1,50,000 engineers serving customers in real time. “The extremely user friendly system displaying marvellous ease of use has been developed by the engineers, input

by engineers and used by the engineers entirely for customer satisfaction,” says Balaji. “For example, you have installed a wonderful product in some remotest corner. The product develops some problem. One engineer goes to solve the problem. In our case, the engineer is not alone; he moves with the support of the 1,50,000 engineers and extensive knowledgebase,” beams Balaji. Another unique programme by Xerox is the Remote Support named Log Me In. With this an engineer can directly log in to a customer’s system and have full access to the control to remotely trouble shoot many day to day problems saving on costly engineer visits as well as precious time. “Apart from the numerous unique programmes,” says Bajaji, “that Xerox has introduced from time to time, we have always been innovative to make the user experience easier. We have come from engineer support to remote support to entirely user friendly products approach. The latest C70, for

example, is a product which is extremely user friendly which enables the user to handle day to day issues and even parts change. This is how we strive to improve our customers’ experience. Xerox is the only company where engineers are leaders. They individually handle customers and receive their calls. They don’t have any managers to instruct them. This enables a strong and cordial relationship development between the service engineer and the customer. The customer gets an engineer friend. This relationship drives about 60 percent customers every time to us. The same has been in the previous year 2014. We got about 60 percent business from our existing customers.” “That’s what makes the difference. That’s what makes Xerox different,” he concludes. Xerox also showcased its Versant 2100 press. The company received a great response for all products and reported multiple orders at the event.

Canon to boost delivery schedules in coming months Puneet Datta, Director - Marketing & Sales, Canon announced the sale of the 21st Canon imagePRESS C800/700/600 series in the country with the installation of imagePRESS C800 at Crest Office Automation of Lucknow. “We launched this machine about 4 months ago. This is the 21st installation in the country; it is the first in the state of Uttar Pradesh,” says Puneet. Canon today has direct sales and service in 38 cities across the country (though more widespread in south) and is further strengthening the entire sales and marketing efforts in the west and northern region with the new sales team taking shape in Lucknow, Ludhiana, Kolkata, Pune and Ahmedabad. “This aligns with our

22

strategy to strengthen our presence in the B class cities with sales as well as service people at each location” he added. Canon has been deluged with orders for the imagePress C800/700/600 series the world over and that, says Puneet, “has become a bit of a challenge for them to manage quick deliveries.” They have been receiving orders above expectations, “We expected orders in hundreds but the orders from our esteemed clients have been in thousands. Though it affected delivery schedules a bit, we will be ready with instant delivery responses by mid

March,” he states. Obviously the delivery schedules have cost the company with sales. “The clients have been in awe of the quality of the prints from the machine and can match any in the industry. The attractive price of the printed sheet is a further incredible impetus,” he adds. While speaking to PRESSIdeas, Puneet mentioned that if there were no problems with delivery schedules, they would have doubled the number of orders for the imagePress C800/700/600 series. As Puneet says that they will be on track by March, we can expect further boost in orders for the company in the coming months.

Crest Office Automation starts Digital venture with Canon imagePRESS C800 The Lucknow based Crest Automation has recently stepped into Colour Digital Printing arena. The choice of Canon imagePRESS wasn’t much difficult for a printer provider who had installed over 700 Canon machines at different locations. Mr. Dinesh Joshi, Director, Crest Office Automation (P) Ltd., is young at 65. After an illustrious career with Bharat Petroleum for 24 years and another 5 years with Reliance Petroleum, he started providing printers to corporate. This was in the year 2008. Since then he has installed over 700 B&W Canon Printers at various offices across his home state. Recently he decided to go into colour printing and installed a flagship Canon Press at his Lucknow facility. “Investing in a Canon ImagePress C800 series of production printer wasn’t much difficult for me,” remarks Dinesh. “I have worked for years with Canon and the choice was natural. I have a long list of clientele with names like BHEL, UPSRTC and Terai Development Corporation to name a few. Since I run my business as a social enterprise rather than a mere profit generating unit, I felt it to be the right to go for colour even though I am a young man of 65,” he beams. Dinesh believes that the demand for coloured prints in the area stands at about 9 lakh copies per month and he sees a good opportunity in this segment. “We have a target of increasing the market share to about 20% of the total coloured prints here in six months. I presume it to be a good start,” he asserts. Talking about the choice to take in Canon as the first choice for his new venture, he says “I have been a very satisfied client with the 700 Canon A4 black and white printers installed at the corporate. Moreover, I have a Canon camera and Canon press was a natural progression. In fact, I never looked at any other digital press as an option.” The new Canon machine is supposed to print magazines covers of about 8 magazines that Dinesh has in hand and he is clear in his approach to cater to the printing needs in the retail market as well. According to him the Canon machine is the best machine for people who plan to enter into the digital printing business since is it a real ‘value for money’.

Xerox introduces Rialto 900 Inkjet Press Propels inkjet accessibility with first-ever, fully-integrated roll-to-cut sheet press. Xerox’s newest press will make inkjet technology a reality for more print service providers by breaking down barriers such as high print volumes, large footprint and cost. The Xerox Rialto 900 Inkjet Press offers first-of-its kind features and carves out a new space within the booming production colour inkjet segment. The world’s only fully-integrated roll-to-cut sheet, narrow web inkjet press is designed for print providers who produce 1.5 to 5 million impressions per month. It has the smallest footprint of any inkjet press on the market – 11.9 x 5.1 feet/ 3.58 x 1.55 meters (including the press tower) – a cost-effective option for various production environments. To help lower the entry point into production inkjet technology, the Rialto 900 prints duplex jobs, one-up on the smallest, narrow web (9.84 inches/250 millimeters) on the market. “We are creating a new, disruptive inkjet market segment with the Rialto 900 and there’s room for everyone,” said Paul Morgavi, chief operating officer, Inkjet Division, Xerox, and general manager, Impika. “The Rialto 900 changes the playing field by merging the cut sheet, inkjet and offset worlds – an important convergence for providers looking for a competitive edge and for print’s long-term survival.” The device offers the speed and image quality required to take on full-colour, personalized direct-mail, statements and book production. Its all-in-one design means the front-end controller, paper roll and

They have a proud 12 year history in the Indian Printing Industry with many firsts to their credit: “We are the first to launch the ten-clamp and three-clamp Perfect Binding machines. Today, there are only two manufacturers making Automated Perfect Binding machines. We launched Hydraulic Based Post-press equipments which is also one of our key milestones in our twelve years journey,” says Abdullah. Electromec’s Managing Director, Mr. Ismail, had

a vast experience in servicing any type of printing equipments while he worked as a Service Engineer in Sivakasi. “He has serviced over 150 machines. With this rich experience he decided to set up his manufacturing unit in Sivakasi – which was actually the birth of Electromech. He has studied engineering in Coimbatore and soon decided to shift his manufacturing unit there as he knew availability of quality component suppliers and engineering skills was ample there. Moreover, Coimbatore was well connected logistically,” says Abdullah.

Guided by customer feedbacks “Our guiding principle is our customer feedbacks,” states Ganapathi. In their initial days, they were the underdogs of the industry; they were being underestimated by the competition; and there were monopolistic players that tried to slow them down. “There were many such things trying to stop us from growing and disturb the monopolistic set up of a few. Now all these are changing – the customers are benefitting as well as they are now able to get equally high quality machines at competitive prices,” he adds. its customers to understand their needs and then design the machine to meet their application needs. “There is a huge talk about competition from imported used equipments. Apart from their high costs, they don’t have proper after sales service backup; whereas we have a dedicated service team to offer 24x7x365 service across the country,” explains Abdullah. “To make high quality machines, overseas manufacturers invest a lot of money to develop such products, which makes them high cost products. They invest such huge money because they have high demand

Adhamsha is currently focused on more growth. “We will increase our product range to take on the competition more effectively. We will make all Gluing and Hydraulic based machines. We plan to be the number one manufacturer of Post-press equipments within the next three years,” he asserts. Electromec claims a market share of over 50% in Delhi as well as the North region. With installations across the country, their market share in other regions particularly the East and West is on the rise. “We lead in the North and have a significant market share in the western region,” says Abdullah who adds that they are exporting to many countries including Bangladesh, UAE, South Africa, Kenya and other South Asian countries. “To

gain a market share of over 50% in Delhi and north is particularly important because it is the most visible and competitive market in the country,” he believes.

At Print Pack 2015 Having set the trend with the launch of ten-clamp and three-clamp Perfect Binding machines, Electromec today runs a successful business with a staff strength of more than 80 skilled people. Electromec had planned the recent Print Pack 2015 big. “The Print Pack 2015 show marks a turning point for us. We are entering into new products with the launches at the show. Our Print Pack highlights included our entry into Fully Automated Case Making and Box Making equipments,” says Abdullah. “We are an Indian manufacturer and focusing on selling our ‘made in India’ products to more and more overseas countries. This is our little contribution to the ‘make in India’ initiative of the PM,” he says.

Veripack 3D has its first appearance in India at Print Pack Bodhi Professional Solution launched Omnitek’s Veripack 3D Web-based 3D visualisation software at the recent Print Pack India 2015. “Every design professional in the industry has to deal with artwork. In packaging, one has to take a lot of pains to get a 3D model prepared for one’s client,” says Satish Nayak, CTO, Bodhi Professional Solution. “The design is usually done in 2D on various popular design software and then they are converted to 3D with the help of complex processes and at times done afresh in a 3D rendering software on a client’s demand. It not only takes a lot of efforts and time but also becomes pretty costly,” he adds. Veripack 3D, a Web-based approval system located on servers enables users create for themselves a 3D match of their 2D packaging design. Using a standard WebGL browser, it enables 3D designs without any need for proprietary interface, special viewer or special plug-in. Veripack 3D had its first appearance in India at Print Pack. The Web-based 3D visualisation software is a PDF based automatic solution which anybody with an Internet access can use with absolute ease from any place in the world and on any device like android smartphone, iPad, tablet PC, notebook etc. Users can simply log in at the Website either directly or through available app installed at one of their portable devices. They can check the design on the go in high resolution. Since the software does away with the need to have other expensive software, workflow and infrastructure for 3D artwork preparation, it becomes extremely affordable solution. What makes it unique is its cost-effectiveness and therefore it is a viable solution for designers of every scale. It comes for around Rs.2 lakhs.

photography, having the right equipment to go with their camera can help photographers to create that perfect shot,” says Chris Bai. “Since the last step to achieve visual perfection is photo editing, finding the right monitor becomes just as important as a right lens, filter or flash,” adds Satish Nayak, CTO, Bodhi Professional Solutions. The monitors offer seamless compatibility with the DSLR camera and effortlessly reproduce and display a photographer’s creative vision. The SW Series is the picture-perfect companion of the photographer who can now experience incredible colour accuracy and precision detail for every photo he creates.

Colour Accurate SW Series The SW Series is built to display photographic images with reliable colour accuracy, fidelity and consistency, bringing together a selection of high-end features for the best photo-editing experience. The Adobe RGB colour space offers a greater range of colour reproduction for shades of blue and green, resulting in a more realistic colour representation of outdoors and nature photography. Photographers can also benefit from greater photo-editing precision with their DSLR cameras utilizing the same colour space. The 14-bit 3D Look Up Table (LUT) improves RGB colour blending accuracy, resulting in impeccable colour reproduction. Having Delta E<2 in both Adobe RGB and sRGB colour spaces gives users the truest and most representative view of the original image.

Hardware calibration allows for adjustment of image processing chip in the monitor without the need to change the graphic card output data. In addition, the calibration results can be saved directly in the monitor under two of the preset modes. With the use of Proprietary Palette Master Calibration Software, the colour performance of the monitor can be tuned and maintained at its most optimal state. The SW Series reveals every detail in a photo with the highest precision and just as they appear to naked eyes, so one can perfect every shade and tone of colour as one desires. The 2560x1440 QHD Resolution means more pixels and hence more of the image for perfect editing. High Pixel Density translates to 123 pixels per inch. The Black-and-White Mode allows for reviewing and editing blackand-white photos without losing any of the desired detail or tone. Previewing colour photos in black-and-white before adding the actual effect is also possible. The OSD remote controller comes with three preset buttons with a customized display setting, such as photo editing, entertainment or web surfing. The OSD controller also comes with a scroll button for quick OSD navigation and setting.

The next development in Veripack 3D line could be in the label segment and other applications like wrap around, shrink wrap etc. Bodhi also launched the BenQ SW Series of Colour Management Monitors. The SW Series is a backward integration to the PG Series. Targeting the photography industry, the monitors are extremely photographer friendly monitors. “When it comes to

Muller Martini launches versatile entry model Ventura Sewing Machine The new model is a significant upgrade from earlier model and features many enhancements.

“We have been happily busy during the show,” says Michael of Muller Martini, who was present at the company’s Print Pack 2015 stand. The company welcomed a lot of visitors – “Last days have been very busy with a lot of traffic from all over the country as well as visitors from neighbouring countries particularly Sri Lanka, Nepal and Bangladesh,” says Michael.

The Ventura MC Book Sewing Machine features patented threadlooping system which shortens changeover time quite considerably and therefore increases efficiency. For higher capacity, binding can be completed without lock stitch with integrated thread sealing.

Muller Martini launched its latest entry-level Sewing Machine Ventura MC 160 at Print Pack 2015. The new model is a significant upgrade from earlier model and features many enhancements. Featuring most modern technology it is a highly automated model with easy handling features. The quality of output is on a par with high-end machines. Features like thread tension adjustment on the fly are standard on the machine as also normal and staggered stitch are standard. Customers can get a wide array of products of outstanding quality on this machine for local as well as international market. “It presents a great opportunity for Indian customers who are looking to meet high quality demands of international market,” opines Michael who also notes that the decreasing volumes in the Book Printing segment have been well compensated by volumes picking up in certain other segments. “Some new segments like notebooks, diaries etc. have been contributing to continuous growth in Book Printing,” he says. According to him, their new entry-level machine is

the right solution for almost every customer. “It is one solution which is a secure investment for years on stretch. The machine has the possibility of going with the fully automated Connect System. One can start with the entry-level machine and can go further and grow with the machine,” he emphasizes. Under the Connect system, Muller Martini can connect up to three book sewing Ventura MC machines to facilitate the efficient, automatic production of thread-sewn brochures and book blocks. It is an impressively simple, yet efficient solution, which enables the manufacturing costs of thread-sewn products to be lowered significantly. It works on the following principle: signatures are gathered, stacked and then turned into threadsewn book blocks – all in a single operation. The Connect system is designed in such a way that it can be operated efficiently in an initial expansion step with just a gathering machine and a book-sewing machine. It makes possible to expand the system at a later date by adding one or two more book sewing machines. It can also dramatically reduce operating and labour costs for the manufacturing of threadsewn products by automation of various steps of the process. Both in-line and off-line operation are possible with Connect system’s flexible design.

Patented loop formation The Ventura MC Book Sewing Machine features patented thread-looping system which shortens

changeover time quite considerably and therefore increases efficiency. Using compressed air, the thread is blown from the sewing needle to the hook needle. For higher capacity, binding can be completed without lock stitch with optional integrated thread sealing. The air-jet supported thread loop formation offers the choice between single and combined staggered stitch by simply changing the air-jet direction with a key stroke on the commander. Depending on the product, the spine build-up can be reduced considerably. Selectively it can be stitched with or without blind stitches. Productions without blind stitch increase productivity and provide book blocks with short thread-ends. In normal production a 4 signature product produced with blind stitch at a cycle speed of 100, a conventional sewing machine produces 20 books per minute, the Ventura MC160 produces with thread sealing 25 book blocks per minute. This can come to a production increase of 300 books every hour. This is a remarkable figure for any production

environment. Due to the heat-sealed thread loops the blocks remain in their compact form. Ventura MC can remarkably process even signatures with only four pages at high speed.

Asir 3: Barcode scan or image recognition Müller Martini offers the Ventura MC Book sewing machine optional with the wellproven control system Asir 3. Signature monitoring is done either with the barcode or image recognition. The sensor consists of an intelligent camera that recognizes and decides whether a signature is fed in correctly. The sensor checks the signatures from inside, which is a Müller Martini patent. With this, signatures which are not fed-in in the right sequence or have not been opened correctly can be detected. The barcode scan option guarantees an absolutely clear identification of the signatures and thereby avoids waste.

The Ventura MC Book Sewing Machine is the first choice for the manufacturing of high-quality book blocks in the hard- and softcover sectors. Müller Martini offers two models the new Ventura MC 160 as the entry level machine and the Ventura MC200 which allows an extreme range of product sizes and the option of two-up production. With the Ventura MC, all kind of different papers can be processed at maximum speeds – and in the best quality. The impressive advantages offered by Ventura MC include: • High range of product sizes • Servo drive concept • Ventura MC 200 allows papers from 22 gsm • Sucker and/or sword opening • Innovative sewing system • Patented loop formation with compressed air • Quick change between different type of stitches

Sonora Process-Free Plates by Kodak at Print Pack India 2015 Kodak’s Bhalchandra Nikumb, MD India and West Asia Cluster & Channel Director SEA Cluster, was present at the company stand at Print Pack India 2015. He told that they had a good show. He comments, “On the first day we received good response from the visitors. It’s better than other shows we participate in. We received serious customers. People came with specific targets. Receiving visitors from far off places on the very first day is another factor that points towards the success of the show.”

Kodak is doing well in all the different segments it presently represents. “Offset packaging is one area which is growing at fairly nice pace,” says Bhalchandra. Large printers are coming up to answer the growing needs of this segment. The area which requires more focus from Kodak, according to Bhalchandra, is the newspaper segment. In the photography segment, NexPress is doing pretty well. Being a high end solution dealing with large volumes, it is a viable solution for volumes above 200,000 per month. NexPress customers are churning out

in the range of 200,000 to over 700,000 prints per month. With around 20 installations, it’s an absolutely efficient machine to produce this much volumes. “Since our machine is a Production machine, it is more of solution where one wants to replace multiple smaller machines,” he says. With new product coming in and focused on the Graphic Arts, Kodak is moving in the right direction. Sonora is one such product which is the current buzz in the market. It attracted a lot of visitor attention at the Print Pack 2015.

Kodak promoted its Sonora Process-Free Plates at the exhibition. The processing-free chemistry-free thermal plates allow users to reduce environmental impact while saving on money and have a competitive edge. Sonora Process Free Plates eliminate the processing step required by traditional thermal plates and provide significant energy, water, and waste reductions without requiring printers to make sacrifices on productivity or print capabilities. Bhalchandra, in addition to looking after markets of India, Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka has also been given responsibility for Thailand, Myanmar, Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos. He is also appointed Channel Director for South East Asia Cluster. The Kodak team with Nikumb in the center

Fujifilm launches innovative water-washable Flenex plate range Fujifilm India launched its new water washable flexo plate range Flenex targeting the packaging segment. The Flenex plates cover both digital as well as analogue flexo plate segments. With total processing time of 30 minutes, it is more than 3 times faster than solvent systems and 1.5 times faster than thermal and 25% + than competitive waterwash plates. It’s faster plate making time means significantly more output per shift allowing reduction of labour costs. With 175 lpi, 1% process dot, and superb dot structure, Flenex delivers consistent ultra high quality prints. “The exclusive chemistry of Flenex requires use of only a mild detergent for washout,” says Ramprasad S, AVP Graphic Arts Division, Fujifilm India. “This eliminates the environmentally damaging manufacture, application and disposal of solvents. Because no wicking cloth is required, there is no eventual landfill or increase in carbon footprint from transportation and recycling the cloth,” he adds. The uniquely mild washout material allows for the residual solution to be treated as common wastewater after a small amount of residual particulate is removed. This particulate can normally be treated

as common waste with extremely minimal environmental impact. Both the analogue and digital versions can be used with UV, waterbase or solvent based ink. There is no requirement for different plates for different ink types. Since the only equipment required to process Flenex is low cost standard waterwash equipment, both the cost of the thermal and solvent systems as well as the sizeable footprint is significantly less. “Up-charges” on consumables with existing thermal and solvent technologies can be eliminated with reasonably priced water-wash equipment. Fujifilm has aggressive expansion plans vis-a-vis the Indian market. It will be introducing more global products into the Indian market. Apart from the Flenex plates, it plans wide format printers targeting the packaging segment including corrugated packaging and web-to-web digital press for the label printing industry. “We will bring in new products and step up our existing product range in the Indian market,” says Ramprasad.

in newer segments such as digital and wide format presses. It also plans to soon establish a demonstration center to showcase its latest technology and product range to the Indian customers. “Packaging and Labels are going to be the key focus area for Fujifilm in India,” concludes Ramprasad.

Fujifilm will provide Flenex to its customers through its existing sales network in India though there may be new partnerships

Insight Communication displays Komori Lithrone and Enthrone models Insight Communication & Print Solutions displayed the Komori Lithrone A37 and Enthrone 429 presses at Print Pack India 2015. “The Lithrone press is designed keeping in mind the needs of the emerging markets like India,” says Toshiyasu Kubotera, GM Exports Asia Pacific & Latin America, Komori. Sangam Khanna, President & MD at Insight Communication & Print Solutions, adds, “The 640 x 940 mm maximum sheet size enables the Lithrone A37 to meet a wide range of printing needs. Since colour management can be implemented by including a CMS colour bar on sheets even with 8-up A4 and letter size impositions, the Lithrone A37 is the ideal machine for producing high page-count products with high print quality.” The compact machine has lower initial and life-cycle cost. Work efficiency can be substantially improved by equipping the press with any of a wide range of options, such as the H-UV ultra-fast drying system, the KHS-AI integrated control system, the PDC-LITE II scanning density control system, or various automatic cleaning systems. Toshiyasu Kubotera, who was present at Insight Communication & Print Solutions stand at Print Pack India 2015, looked pretty pleased with the outcome of the show. He says that the show has evolved to become more international. Komori has been pretty successful in Indian market. It has accomplished over 36 installations last year. It’s a big achievement. The improvement in exchange situation of Yen vs. Rupee was one of the reasons for the industry to find a cost effective robust solution for the Indian industry. “The industry is also gaining confidence after the change in government at the centre which is considered more industry friendly,” thinks Toshiyasu.

“The market always demand a stable product, world class engineering at an affordable price. Apart from these key needs, Komori has been working on innovation very aggressively. Since 2008 it has been continuously producing and launching a new product every year. It’s very important for us that our Indian customers are always at par with their counterparts globally. Our customers are in a position to effectively meet global competition. One of the key reasons why Komori has been successful is because both – the cost per print as well as the cost of ownership – of Komori equipment is among the lowest in the industry. The nearest competitor is at least 50 per cent

“Komori is a technology which fetches more price should a customer happen to resell after certain period,” states Sangam, adding, “Komori’s key focus remains quality and service backup. Insight has a total staff of 128 people with a dedicated team of 70 engineers looking after the technical and service aspect. The support staff is based in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, Calcutta, Hyderabad and Ahmedabad. The policy is generally to place an engineer wherever they have 4-5 installations.” Going further in the service area, Insight is coming up with an App with which customers can place an order for spares online. “We are only simplifying the ownership of Komori,”

L-R Ajay Agarwal, Sangam Khanna, Yoshiharu Komori and Toshiyasu Kubotera

costlier than Komori as far as cost per print is concerned. Even if there are certain brands available at lower cost of ownership, they don’t stand vis-a-vis Komori in terms of quality,” he continues.

says Sangam. He had put the Print Pack target of closing deals for at least 20 Komori machines. And, on the very first day of the exhibition they had already received orders for at least 7 machines.

Esko Full HD Flexo and Equinox transform fortunes of UK firms Standout quality creates business opportunities for Phoenix Printing Plates and JFM Plates. The combined benefits of perfect ink laydown, right solid density, vibrant brand colours and supreme platemaking consistency offered by Esko Full HD Flexo technology are helping UK operations develop sector leading services, improve production and win new business and industry plaudits.

“We felt that going Full HD Flexo would make us faster, and the printers we make the plates for stated the quality is so much better. The speed, the no compromise on quality and the improvements to the production process are all making a big difference.” - Steve Collins, Phoenix Printing Plates

“UK operations are under increasing pressure to provide an all-round, high quality, cost effective, range of services that touch on numerous production sectors,” explains Paul Bates, Esko Regional Business Manager. “But crucial to that is job flexibility, particularly with run lengths. This is where Esko’s Full HD Flexo becomes a critical tool in any solutions portfolio. The ability to provide what specifiers are demanding to ever tighter budgets enables our customers to be highly responsive to ever-changing market requirements.”

Full HD Flexo adoption opens doors JFM Plates adopted Esko Full HD Flexo to stay ahead of the curve and it was the first UK company to achieve Full HD Flexo Certification. Mark McKee, General Manager of the Manchester firm explains: “There were a couple of instances where we had been approached by potential customers and had not been able to quote because we couldn’t fully meet the requirements. We had to do something about it. Now with Esko Full HD Flexo, we can grow

the business, safeguard our future and work with a greater number of partners.” Celebrating its 35th year in operation as a reprographic specialist, JFM Plates was established by Mark’s father John to serve the lithographic market. After 15 years demand fell as operations began installing their own solutions. This prompted a move to flexo followed ten years later by investment in digital and its first Esko CDI Spark 2530. Three years later a larger CDI Spark 4835 was added. Last year the latest investment was made in another CDI Spark 4835 with high resolution optics of 4,000dpi and inline UV to enable the adoption of Full HD Flexo. Full HD Flexo Certification was completed in March and that has excited our customers as to the enhanced results we can now deliver states Mr McKee. “We had been running a stochastic screen set on our standard imagers,” he explains. “Other operations have been using Esko HD Flexo for a few years. We looked at that but decided we wanted to leapfrog the standard technology and go one step beyond. We considered other processing methods but felt UV inline was the cleanest and the most controlled way without adding another step such as lamination of the plate. Also, because we had existing Esko solutions, it made it easier to dovetail – installation was nice and seamless. Now we can really push the boundaries

Key Notes : > JFM Plates is the first to achieve Full HD Flexo Certification and adopt Esko Full HD Flexo to stay ahead of the curve. > Phoenix Printing Plates immediately saw a 15% growth in business when it started a trial with Esko Full HD Flexo. > Equinox standardises printing production on a standard set of inks and allows increased press productivity while reducing ink costs.

us and that is not something that we would have been able to do before.”

Cost effectiveness on a plate

Results that deliver

In addition to Esko Full HD Flexo, JFM Plates works with Equinox to help its customers produce work more cost efficiently. Equinox standardises printing production on a standard set of inks. This can result in a reduction in the number of plates required as printers might not have to rely on a larger set of spot colour inks for each and every job. Equinox allows increased press productivity while reducing ink costs. Because they always use the same set of inks, they can gang jobs together, thus making the use of plates more cost effective. The software enhances quality and consistency, complements the Esko Full HD Flexo platemaking process and is cost efficient without compromising colour accuracy.

Bristol operation Phoenix Printing Plates runs three digital imaging systems, of which two Esko 5080 CDI Sparks, along with Esko colour management and ArtPro packaging prepress software.“We immediately saw a 15% growth in business when we started a trial with Esko Full HD Flexo,” comments Steve Collins, Sales Director at Phoenix Printing Plates. “We felt that going Full HD Flexo would make us faster, and the printers we make the plates for stated the quality is so much better. The speed, the no compromise on quality and the improvements to the production process are all making a big difference.”

The firm is upgrading to Esko Automation Engine 14 as well, and creates and shares files with strategic partners such a Reprobrand in Scotland via WebCenter. Mr McKee adds: “Coupled with Equinox, we are able to achieve stunning results. And customers are saving on the press costs as a result of reduced make-ready times and ink consumption. Esko Full HD Flexo has given us a big injection and next year we will continue to expand and grow as we find new ways to add value to our services. The solution with Equinox is opening up doors for

He continues: “We are getting much nearer the quality of gravure and offset customers are demanding. Updates on the added-value sector of functional printing for labels and packaging, by FINAT Packaging has been a prime driver in the development of printed electronics, from RFID to QR codes and other digitally ‘readable’ data. The printing expertise, specialist materials, and conductive inks required to reliably create these ‘intelligent’ functions have long been a specialty of the label production chain – an extended value chain which is supported by a single umbrella organisation in Europe, FINAT, the international association for the self-adhesive label industry. Proactive participation in educating and supporting its member companies as well as the industry in general in newly-developing territories such as the printed electronics arena is an ongoing focus for FINAT, as innovation continues apace. A recent members-only expert webinar on printed electronics provided a valuable update on existing applications and potential opportunities for printers in the narrow-web flexo market – not just in packaging or labels.

New directions for label printers Presented by Chris Jones of Novalia, a conductive print and capacitive touch specialists based in the UK, the webinar encouraged label industry delegates to think ‘out of the box’. “By combining extant mainstream equipment, consumables, and expertise, they can create state-ofthe-art printed electronics that, in addition to scannability, bring the dimensions of touch, sound and vision into play to add real additional functionality or even ‘must have’ desirability to a product or its packaging,” explains Mr. Jones. “Today, as well as printed circuit boards and transistors, print can deliver a variety of other mainstream applications – including lighting, LEDs, photovoltaics, and even skincare patches, and features strongly in automotive, aviation, architectural and military applications and in pharmaceuticals and healthcare, toys, music, and of course brand protection and anti-counterfeiting.”

The world of the smartphone In a world where the majority of the population has a smartphone, the opportunities to link up such instruments to interact, via printed electronics, with what would appear to be simple printed posters or other items is now attracting more and more

50

February 2015

interest internationally. Outdoor advertising and displays are good examples. As part of the launch for their new Flavour Shots herbs and spices range, Schwartz used a ‘sonic poster’ featuring Novalia’s capacitive touch technology. The paper poster, when touched, plays music wirelessly through a Bluetooth-enabled smartphone or tablet. Touching the artwork on different spots triggers musical chords that are meant to add an extra level of engagement with the new Schwartz products. It is conductive inks that turn the surface area of the paper into an interactive interface. Adding new dimensions such as sound or movement to display print is certainly an innovative way to enhance a consumer’s perception of, and interest in, a product.

Added-value packaging There are also creative examples from the extended world of packaging Mr. Jones illustrates: “For example, a box of tissues that featured a playable piano keyboard on the side of the packaging, and multiplepack secondary packaging for beers and cigarettes that also carried special printed ‘touch’ and ‘connectivity’ features. What consumer could resist the added value of such packaging?” On a more serious note, pharmaceutical and healthcare applications add user-friendliness to alert a patient to the need to take his blister-packed medication – and enable the pharmacist/dispenser to check, thanks to a microprocessor in the pack, that the drugs were in fact taken at the right time in the right quantities.

The winning features of flexo print For volume production of printed electronics, narrow-web label printers are particularly well positioned as providers. “While screen and gravure have their place in certain application

areas,” Mr. Jones explains, “flexo has proved itself the most attractive print process for the job. Its combination of good print speeds and ease of repeatability; the high, consistent application weight of wet ink that flexo achieves; and the good range of available flexible, inexpensive substrates (paper, PP, PET), constitute an ideal combination. The conductive pigments themselves represent an additional consideration for the flexo printer – both in practical and cost terms – and, additionally, drying the ink is a key factor. Currently, evaporative solvent and water-based drying provide the desired characteristics. UV ink curing remains a challenge, because at this time it does not pack the ink particles together sufficiently. The process of printing conductive inks embraces, in summation, anilox specification, production speed, drying, and press consumables – all of which can affect the ‘sheet resistance’ of the conductive inks – the characteristic which is at the heart of a good result.”

Innovation beckons the brand owner! “There is certainly a considerable and growing interest from narrow-web label printers in extending the range of specialist capabilities they can offer to brand owners. Their skills base and pressroom equipment can enable them to deliver printed items incorporating printed electronics in a variety of creative forms that go well beyond traditional functional/industrial applications and conventional label print,” Mr. Jones concludes.

ExxonMobil Chemical introduces Vistamaxx 3588FL at PlastIndia 2015 ExxonMobil Chemical introduced a new grade to its portfolio of Vistamaxx performance polymers at the recent PlastIndia that took place in Gujarat from February 5 to 10, 2015. Vistamaxx 3588FL used pure in the sealing layer provides outstanding sealing performance in cast polypropylene(CPP) films and heat-sealable biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP)films designed for fast and reliable packaging operations. The new grade combines very low seal and hot tack initiation temperatures with broad hermetic seal range making it well suited for applications such as snack, biscuit and candy packaging. “Vistamaxx 3588FL is designed to balance excellent processability and outstanding sealing performance in heat-sealable CPP and BOPP films,” said Miranda Lo, Vistamaxx business manager Asia Pacific, ExxonMobil Chemical. “Asia Pacific continues to be an important market in terms of capacity and demand. Moreover in the food packaging segment we see trends towards more economically accessible pre-packed food and smaller packaging sizes which require faster and more efficient packaging

operations. This new grade is tailored to meet those needs of the industry.” Using pure Vistamaxx 3588FL to replace standard terpolymer PP in the sealant layer of 3 or 5 layer heat sealable CPP or BOPP filmscan enable higher speeds for horizontal and vertical form fill and seal (HFFS and VFFS) packaging operations. Vistamaxx 3588FL delivers a 10 degree lower SIT and broader and higher hot tack window compared to standard terpolymer PP resins. These improvements can lead to significantly improved packaging line performance. In CPP films, the use of Vistamaxx 3588FL in the sealant layer extends the hermetic seal range which is critical for applications that require leak-free and airtight packaging. Additionally, the coefficient of friction (COF) is easily controlled using commercially available masterbatches leading to trouble-free VFFS operations even with more sensitive films like metallized CPP film. Uflex Ltd., one of the largest packaging film conglomerates in India with significant market presence in CPP film production, has

been running Vistamaxx 3588FL. “Having run a significant production of heat sealable cast PP film using pure Vistamaxx 3588FL in the sealing layer, we were impressed by the film’s excellent processability. There was no fall in output and minimal changeover time was required when transitioning from our standard production platform to the new Vistamaxx 3588FL. Also, the film’s appearance, measured by haze and gloss, was outstanding and COF control provides smooth packaging operations,” said Mr. Ajay Gupta, vice president – PP Group, Uflex Limited. “Vistamaxx 3588FL creates new innovation opportunities for converters of heat sealable CPP and BOPP films. It delivers excellent processability, while providing the potential to create a very versatile film that can add value in both VFFS and HFFS packaging operations. Meanwhile, retailers can benefit from packaging with better seals that keeps food fresh for consumer enjoyment,” said Lo. A CPP film produced by Uflex was on display at the ExxonMobil Chemical booth at PlastIndia.

MPS EF flexo press for Bizerba MPS has sold an EF flexo press to Bizerba Label Solutions, part of the Bizerba Group. According to John Gomeau, president of Bizerba Label Solutions, located in Joppa, MD, the deciding factors for purchasing the MPS EF press were its operator friendliness, open design, advanced features such as Crisp. Dot and iControl, quick change die system and press automation. “We are very impressed with all this press has to offer,” he said. “The fact that it can run very thin films at high speeds and in stable register, is very remarkable. It’s also great that we can continue to use our existing plate roll tooling stock.” Gomeau said he also feels with MPS’ commitment to service, the two companies will build a partnership that will enable Bizerba to become more efficient with quicker changeovers and faster print speeds. Kees Nijenhuis, vice president of MPS Systems North America, agrees that the

two companies’ focus on service makes for a great relationship. “Bizerba’s success is a direct result of their focus on delivering first-class service to their customers. That is the same at MPS. Service, whether its connecting customers with the right press to meet their exact needs, or training press operators to get the most from the press, or providing outstanding preventive and repair maintenance, customer service is our number one priority,” he said. The EF is MPS’ flagship. It is an automated multi-substrate flexo press that offers a choice of either plate rolls or print sleeves, providing the ultimate in flexibility. It also features both UV and hot-air drying technology, allowing users to print on a variety of substrates including thin film, paper, cartonboard, shrink sleeves, inmould, lamitube and flexible packaging. The EF features MPS’ exclusive Crisp.Dot and iControl technologies. Crisp.Dot uses a rubber-coated counter-pressure roller to exert equalized pressure resulting in minimal

dot gain. The result is that the print dot retains its round shape, the ink coverage is solid and small fonts are sharper. The iControl management and service operator/ machine interface minimizes operator errors. Simple, intuitive and stress-free to operate, this technology enables the operator to choose and run individual functions via a touch screen and button, greatly simplifying machine control and operation. Gomeau said Bizerba was in the market for a new press in order to meet increasing demand from both new and existing customers. This is the first MPS press for Bizerba USA, however, its parent company Bizerba has purchased nine MPS presses in total.

Since the initial Onset launch in 2007, the range of high-end, high productivity Onset printers have set the benchmark in print quality through their use of a full-width array of printheads, eliminating banding. With the launch of the new Onset R40LT Inca now makes this high level of print quality available to companies looking to invest in a standard mid-range machine. The Onset R40LT’s ability to develop from a four-colour, 265 sqm/hr device up to an eight-colour fully specified device in the field gives users a highly flexible printer that can grow with their business, whilst protecting their investment for the long-term. The Onset R40LT is a more future-proof and accessible option for companies considering a standard mid-range digital flatbed machine, as it is a full-width array printer that guarantees high quality results with no banding at higher throughput speeds than scanning head technology. The Onset R40LT model can start as a manual 3.14 x 1.6m (123.6in x 63in) full-width array flatbed printer in a choice of four, five or six colours and is capable of 265 sqm/ hr print speeds on substrates up to 50mm (2in) thick - equivalent to 40 full-beds sheets/ hr. The new Onset R40LT printer has all the intelligent design features of the existing Onset R40i, including 14 picolitre Fujifilm

Dimatix Spectra printheads, a 15-zone vacuum table, a UV sensor system and mechanical substrate height detectors, all of which maintain productivity, quality and reliability. Based on the dynamic Onset Scaleable Architecture platform, the Onset Series now features a choice of 18 different models and three different handling systems to allow companies to tailor the best printer with the best combination of productivity, quality and ink options for their business. The new printer is available immediately from Fujifilm, Inca’s exclusive global distribution partner, and the first units are already being installed at Imperial in New Berlin, USA and at Daelprinting in Ypres, Belgium. Jason Stormowski, President of Imperial, says: “The Onset R40LT is perfect for us because it delivers the perfect mix of quality and speed that our clients expect and allows us to grow and add capabilities and capacities as our market grows. The most amazing thing is it can be upgraded right in our facility.”

increasingly asking for shorter turnaround times without compromising on quality, and the features offered by the Inca Onset R40LT help us to meet their needs. We were impressed by the outstanding quality delivered by the new Onset R40LT, and have no doubts that it is the best fit for us.” “By investing in the new Onset R40LT, companies can now join the Onset ‘family’ with the confidence that the printer can keep pace with their business growth or changing production requirements and save them money in the long run,” says Heather Kendle, Inca Digital’s Director of Marketing and Product Management. “Many firms buying a standard mid-range printer will – as their business grows – have to consider replacing it or buying a second machine. But with the affordable Onset R40LT you can increase your throughput and/or quality at considerably less cost and inconvenience.”

Arjan D’haene, sales director at Daelprinting, explains: “We are committed to ensure we are equipped with the most advanced print engines available in the market, as it allows us to guarantee consistent, high quality results. Brand owners and retailers are
