FROM THE EDITORS’ DESK Dear Readers, With a work area spanning over 165,000 sq.ft. Edelmann houses an array of printing machines which includes the latest acquisition – a CX102 from Heidelberg. The 12 unit machine is a first in India. The installation also boasts of Heidelberg’s very own Prinect Press Center with Intellistart operator guidance system and roller check assistant. The cover story is on this latest installation at Baddi, Himachal Pradesh. Heidelberg is among the top global brands with leading position in many key areas. The New Report from Smithers Pira has ranked Heidelberg Presses at the top – both as the most productive presses in the industry as well as producing the lowest cost per sheet. The report was commissioned by Heidelberg, as the company wanted an independent third party to verify the findings, it had done. The company tracked data for last two years which verifies the findings of Smithers Pira. Heidelberg India has backed the report findings. Another key installation is by Bhanu Media Centre, which aims ‘Best of both Worlds’ with their new Xerox 1000i. Xerox 1000i stood a clear winner providing Gloss at the rated speeds and the Fifth ink Option. The machine combines the best of high-gloss Offset Inks and dots with density of Screen Printing. The investing company has expanded facility by 200 sq.ft. to accommodate new capabilities. With a work area spanning over 165,000 ft2 Edelmann houses an array of printing machines which includes the latest acquisition – a CX102 from Heidelberg. The 12 unit machine is a first in India. The installation also boasts of Heidelberg’s very own Prinect Press Center with Intellistart operator guidance system and roller check assistant. Speaking about their latest acquisition, Munish says, “We also have the colour fast solution by Heidelberg for the CX102 along with the patented
aerodynamically optimised grippers at delivery.” Edelmann also has the complete ESKO Artwork Software package, which is also used at the Edelmann headquarters in Heidenheim, and that guarantees accurate and quick setup of printing data in any of their 16 locations. “Standardization,” says Munish,“is the name of the game. It is a really difficult job to implement standardization in printing industry with so many variables involved but it is in the interest of any printing unit to strive to achieve the maximum”. Edelmann India has been catering to the demands of the Pharma and Beauty segment of the industry as of now and with the all new Heidelberg CX102, Manish plans to play on the feel, touch and smell aspects. The Heidelberg Speedmaster CX102 is the universal straight-printing press in 70 × 100 format with speeds upto 15,000 sheets per hour and the perfect interaction of all components enables the Speedmaster CX 102 to easily process materials from lightweight paper through to rigid cardboard. The high level of automation and the intelligent control make operation extremely user-friendly and guarantee wholly controlled and stable processes. Makeready times, energy consumption and paper waste are minimised, altogether translating to increased cost efficiency. Edelman India produces high quality finished folding cartons for the Beauty Care, Health Care and Consumer Brands markets along with a complete unit with the setup for printed packaging made of

corrugated board. “Presently we convert about 600 tons per month which is likely to increase by over 25% with the CX102 in our stable,” perceives Manish. The company shall be attending the CPHL Show in Mumbai to tap the high end Pharma market in the end of November later this year. “Over The Counter (OTC) Products is going to be our focus for the pharma and high end cosmetics industry wherein we would be able to use the full potential of our CX102,” discloses Munish. He also said that with the CX in their arsenal, it would be a breeze for them to produce finishes like tactile, gloss, matter and many others. Munish is confident of achieving the RoI of his new investment in 7 years, which is a rather optimistic period given the effects of demonetisation and GST implementation had on business. “Our products are targeted for the top of the line niche market in packaging and we have always strived (and shall strive) to provide out client with a-step-ahead products all this while and we wish to keep the tempo on with the all new CX 102,” emphasizes Munish. Klaus Nielsen, MD, Heidelberg India stated, “With many international players coming into India, standardization has to happen. There is no escape from it”. He further commented on the impact of demonetization and GST on businesses, adding that the print industry was no exception. In view of the CX 102 installation at Edelmann, Klaus Nielsen commented, “The configuration chosen by Edelmann is very interesting. With a length of 22 meters, the CX 102 is the longest in the country. We
10

expect to see lots of innovations from Team Edelmann led by Mr. Munish in the near future, considering the risk taking capabilities of Munish and his team. Creative printers that think out-of-the-box will be the one to reap benefits of the fast changing market!”
When asked about more installations of this kind in the country, Klaus smiled, “More interesting news is coming. The next eye opening press configuration is sailing as we speak”

Smithers Pira names Heidelberg most productive New Report from Smithers Pira reveals Heidelberg Presses are most productive in the industry and produce the lowest cost per sheet.
“Even with a 25% purchase price premium, Heidelberg machines only need to produce 8.75% more to justify the price difference versus our competitors’ machines as shown by the PIA White Papers. This report proves that we far and away exceed that!” – Andy Rae
Key Notes : >
Heidelberg delivers on average 26 - 52% more productivity than competitive equipment across 3 size platforms.
> Cost per sheet is significantly lower on Heidelberg presses versus other manufacturers. > Profit opportunity for Heidelberg machines is higher than for competitive models.

October 2017
Smithers Pira’s newest report – “Real production capability of pre-owned sheetfed litho presses” – analyzes the impression count of almost 450 pre-owned sheetfed litho presses under 10 years old from five different manufacturers. Averaged across all platform sizes, the report finds that Heidelberg presses are 24.1% more productive than all other manufacturers’ machines when comparing the overall impression count of all machines in all formats. In the case of the Speedmaster XL 105/106, the press is 66% more productive than all the competitive machines. Smithers Pira costing model showed 11% lower production costs per 1,000 sheets. “When we studied the data available online for the used equipment market, we started truly understanding the reality of how much more
productive Heidelberg equipment is versus our competitors,” said Global Head of Marketing, Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG, Andy Rae. “But to have the data verified by a respected organization such as Smithers Pira, it now shows the whole industry the astounding proof of Heidelberg productivity.”
The Proof is in the Productivity The study analyzes the output of B1, B2, and B3 machines – with a primary focus on the two larger format sizes. For all B2 (29”) presses, Heidelberg’s average annual impression count is 68.5% higher than the machines from the other four manufacturers. Across all B1 (40-41”) formats, Heidelberg presses (Speedmaster CD 102 and Speedmaster XL 105/106) are an average of 36% more productive.
pressideas/ commercial printing
When comparing the average production costs of Heidelberg B1 presses to competitive equipment, both the XL 105/106 and CD 102 formats were more cost effective in producing 1,000 sheets. Heidelberg’s entry level B1 press, the Speedmaster CD 102, even outperformed the “highest specification” competitive model in terms of lower production costs.
“What this study proves is that buying a new press from another manufacturer, regardless of purchase price, means that you will be paying a higher cost per sheet,” said Rae. “Even with a 25% purchase price premium, Heidelberg machines only need to produce 8.75% more to justify the price difference versus our competitors’ machines as shown by the PIA White Papers. This report proves
that we far and away exceed that!” To conclude, Smithers Pira states, “This additional productivity provides a significant competitive advantage to Heidelberg machines…the analysis shows that the profit opportunity for Heidelberg machines is significantly higher than for the competitive models.”
Heidelberg India backs Smithers Pira finding of its used presses Heidelberg’s India arm has backed the findings of the Smithers Pira Report, which has graded the productivity of used sheetfed presses produce higher volumes of print annually than competitor machines. According to Klaus Nielsen, managing director at Heidelberg India, the survey used 450 used presses of different brands and format size coming to market for sales on a worldwide basis to assess the annual number of impressions they produce. “Our customers sell printed sheets, to make their margins so it’s a great indicator of real-life productivity.” The report was commissioned by Heidelberg, as the company wanted an independent third party to verify the findings, it had done. The company tracked data for last two years which verifies the findings of Smithers Pira. The report used the total impression the presses had and divided that by the age to get the number of impressions/year. However, there are at least two important variables the report does not mention: shifts, and run-length. Nielsen explained, “Of course one can argue there are many factors influencing the
14
October 2017
impression count of a printing press, but if the surveyed population is sufficient, the statistical variances will be averaged out.” He added, “The fact remains that the difference in output of printed sheet found in the Pira study between Heidelberg and other brands is so significant it can only be explained by the differences in technology. Printing machines are no different from most other products, where there is also a very clear link between price and performance and this study is just a confirmation of what we have been telling our customers for years.” Press manufacturers generally talk about increased productivity, but its profit that matters. The survey showed that the CD 102 outperforms all of the competition, and therefore provides the lowest cost per sheet in the capacity requirement segment of 30 million sheets per year. Nielsen said, “Two things here, if you buy a machine buy the one that best fits the capacity need you have, and ensure it has the lowest production cost per sheet, as that’s what a printer add their margin to, to
make a profit. It also shows that, on paper, machines are made to look equal, but they perform very differently in a real production environment, and that the real production capability is what you are paying for.”
But does buying a close to tenyear-old Heidelberg press with the kind of productivity it has, make sense? What about the wear and tear? “No,” said Nielsen. “It suggests that the capability to keep performing at a high output level comes down to the base build quality and the software that drives it. Based on the findings the second best option to a new Heidelberg is a used one as it will still outperform a new competitive machine. Obviously, if well maintained it will continue to perform.” Heidelberg said, it has hundreds of preowned machines in India, and with key print companies in India, but did not reveal the name. Heidelberg most recent high-end new machine installation was at Edelmann, which installed India’s first 12-unit Heidelberg.
Every second counts at FLYERALARM Rapida 145: Complete job changes in just two minutes. FLYERALARM is one of the largest online printer in Germany and currently posts an annual turnover of some €330 million. Even at European level, the family-run company must be counted among the leaders with its 2,000 employees. At just the eight production plants in Northern Bavaria and in Saxony, FLYERALARM Industrial Print operates 90 printing units, predominantly in large format and among them also several Rapida 145 presses.
“It is clearly noticeable that our day-to-day work has become much more efficient and we are immensely grateful for the extremely knowledgeable support from the staff at ppi Media and Digital Collections here on site.” - Tilak Kumar, The Printers Mysore

The assignment of print jobs to individual plants and presses is decided on the basis of substrate, grammage and product type. The plant in Greussenheim near Würzburg, for example, is specialised on conventional print products on glossy substrates. Two different grammages are printed, namely 135 and 250 g/m2, and the three four-colour Rapida 145 presses produce mainly flyers, folders and magazines. The average run length lies below 5,000 copies, and it is only rarely that orders come in for as many as 30,000 copies. With so many short runs, fast job changes are naturally all the more important. The Rapida 145 large-format presses at the plant in Greussenheim are equipped with a full spectrum of automation modules geared to fast job changes. This includes DriveTronic components such as SIS (sidelay-free infeed) and SPC (simultaneous plate change), CleanTronic Synchro washing systems, a special ink duct coating for fast ink changes, online integration with the LogoTronic Professional management system, and many others besides.
Accordingly, fast job changes with automatic plate changing, parallel washing and delivery of the first test print from a new job within five minutes were already standard. Through the incorporation of optimised plate changers and adaptation of the washing programs to the correspondingly shorter change time, however, makeready times in Greussenheim have now been reduced further still. In the meantime, a complete changeover from the last good sheet of one job to the first good sheet of the next takes only half the previous time, as plant manager Johannes Barthelmes confirms. QualiTronic SheetDetect supports automated printing FLYERALARM combines the efficiency of simultaneous plate changing with the enormous additional potential of PlateIdent. As soon as the data matrix codes on the plates are read, all the necessary press presetting information is loaded directly from LogoTronic Professional. Johannes Barthelmes: “For
pressideas/ commercial printing
us, that is a form of semi-automated printing. While the press is in makeready, the printers and helpers have time to attend to other tasks.” Normally, several print jobs are stacked together on a single pallet. At the end of each job, the pile is marked with a fluorescent pen, taking into account a defined production allowance and any waste sheets. After turning, QualiTronic SheetDetect recognises the marked sheets by way of a sensor under the infeed, enabling separation of the individual jobs. The Rapida 145 detects the end of a job and starts makeready for the subsequent job in the same manner as ErgoTronic AutoRun. For the helpers on the presses, this means less time to be spent at the feeder and more time for the loading of new plates into the plate changers. Inline quality reduces waste The three Rapida 145 presses are equipped with QualiTronic ColorControl for inline colour measurement. On this basis, waste has been cut by around 50 per cent compared to the previous Rapida 142 presses. Automatic positioning of the plates with PlateIdent also contributes to waste reduction. There are many aspects of the Rapida technology which Johannes Barthelmes and his colleagues mention as especially advantageous for the business model pursued by FLYERALARM – from the outstanding stability and reliability, to unrivalled speed in production and not least the exceptionally fast makeready. In addition, a close technology partnership drives developments which also benefit other print companies. One example is the new plate changer, which is now officially available to the market. Primarily in-house value chain Day after day, approx. 350,000 printed sheets leave the FLYERALARM plant in Greussenheim. The portfolio of the company group embraces a total of almost 3 million different products and product variants. Unlike other providers, FLYERALARM itself handles the entire value chain for its principal products in the fields of print and advertising. The 2,000 employees print, finish and dispatch some 15,000 jobs every day.

The Lithrone G37, the space saving and optimized cost-performance strategic machine for the package printing market, is designed to boost press room efficiencies and thus profitability for customers. Supporting a maximum sheet size up to 640 × 940mm, it features a maximum printing area of 620 × 930mm.
Railways decides to shut its 14 printing presses The Printing Presses owned by The Indian Railways are to close down. The railways has decided to close down all its 14 printing presses and move the staff employed in the presses to other departments. The decision was taken during a meeting of railway minister Piyush Goyal with top railway officials. The move is part of the railways’ strategy to exit activities which are no longer integral to its functioning. The concerned printing units are mostly old and house outdated machinery. Moreover, the printing demand at railways has decreased due to automation and less use of paper for forms, books and tickets etc. The railways is expected to meet its future printing demands by outsourcing. Earlier, these units were used to print tickets which were then supplied to stations. With computerisation, most of the units have become nonoperational and have very few staff. Also, with the introduction of IRCTC, majority of ticketing moved online.

Powered by drupa and pacprocess Tehran, IPAP Printing & Packaging Expo, as part of the interpack alliance, markedly exceeded both exhibitors’ and visitors’ expectations. Prompting satisfied faces among the organisers Messe Düsseldorf and Barsaz Rooydad Pars Company (BRP), Iran’s most stateof-the-art exhibition centre Shahr-e-Aftab (Exhibiran International) attracted some 7,500 experts from 12 to 15 October. 167 exhibitors from 11 countries presented their products and services. The ranges included exhibits from the entire value chain of the packaging industry and related process industries (pacprocess) as well as printing technologies from the areas of Prepress/Print, Premedia/Multichannel, Postpress, Converting and Packaging, Materials, Equipment, Services and Infrastructure (IPAP).
The trade fairs occupied 14,575 square metres of total exhibition space. Exhibitors included national companies such as Vana Press, Shargh Sanat and Kooshesh Karan Machinery as well as international enterprises like Canon Middle East, Di Mauro, and Project Engineering. Commenting on this Hamed Irani, Director BRP, said: “The importance of the print and packaging industries cannot be rated high enough. They lay the foundation for the competitiveness of a wide variety of products and are closely tied to rising export revenue. The trade fair concept of pacprocess Tehran and IPAP went down very well and has created the pre-requisites for a positive development in these key industries.” “We are delighted that the debut of IPAP was so

successful. This way we have created a sound basis for the trade fair allowing it to grow and gain in international appeal,” says Sabine Geldermann, Global Head of Printing Technologies at Messe Düsseldorf, commenting on the good trade fair results and goes on to say: “The Iranian market offers enormous growth potential and we are confident that with IPAP we are giving our exhibitors and visitors an outstanding platform to tap into this promising market. We will also support the trade fair with our expertise in future – in line with the motto ‘IPAP 2018 powered by drupa’!”

to a competitive standard using local companies’ existing, obsolete technology. This puts great pressure on local producers to invest. This means big opportunities especially for European investors and partners as these are highly appreciated by Iranians.
And the economy faces backlog demand in all areas: A well educated, relatively young population of over 80 million people increasingly calls for high-quality packaged products that it is not possible to produce
The coming edition of IPAP and pacprocess Tehran is scheduled for early October 2018 on the trade fair calendar.
Exhibitors like Ayman Aly, Senior Marketing Manager at Canon Middle East also rated their participation as very positive: “The idea of the event is quite good. To conclude, IPAP is very much needed on this market because the printing market is lagging here. The market needs opening up and there is a lack of business structure, especially in the printing industry. Developing this country and this market will be very important. The quality of the visitors was good and this is a good base for next year. We achieved our objectives and are very excited about coming back next year – probably with larger space. Our wish for next year is to have more competitors at the event as this would attract more visitors.” Iran is regarded as an extremely attractive market for the industry. With more than

Kodak at IFRA World Publishing Expo 2017 - helps newspapers achieve more productivity, cost benefits and sustainability.
At IFRA World Publishing Expo 2017 (October 10 to 12, 2017, Messe Berlin, Germany) Kodak underlined its commitment to newspaper printing and the immense importance it attaches to news and marketing messages in printed form. Prepress and printing solutions to help newspaper printers be more successful in the market were on show at the Kodak booth.
What’s new in newspaper CTP
Kodak’s portfolio of digital printing technology meets the needs of newspaper companies no matter where they are on the path to digital. It gives newspaper printers an array of options for getting started in digital business depending on their needs.

The new and affordable KODAK ACHIEVE NEWS Platesetter rounds off Kodak’s portfolio of thermal CTP solutions for the newspaper market, which also includes the KODAK TRENDSETTER NEWS Platesetter and the fully automatic KODAK GENERATION NEWS Platesetter. The ACHIEVE NEWS Platesetter images up to 54 broadsheet plates an hour extremely reliably. The new platesetter for newspaper applications will be available early 2018. Kodak’s new Multi-Cassette Unit (MCU) makes its debut as an automation solution for the KODAK TRENDSETTER NEWS and ACHIEVE NEWS
Platesetter. The MCU has a compact footprint and low energy consumption, and can hold up to 960 plates in 4 cassettes. Thanks to the automated slip sheet removal, it provides enhanced convenience for automatic plate loading and unloading. The MCU option for the TRENDSETTER NEWS Platesetter is available now and for the ACHIEVE NEWS Platesetter it will be launched early 2018. The new KODAK Mobile CTP Control App lets newspaper printers monitor their ACHIEVE NEWS, TRENDSETTER NEWS and GENERATION NEWS Platesetters remotely using their ANDROID or iOS device. The app provides real-time information on the production and operating status of one or more platesetters and reports whenever a CTP system requires operator attention. The highest levels of platemaking efficiency will hence be maintained courtesy of the app, which will be released in the New Year. Expo attendees got demos of the new Mobile CTP Control App at the Kodak booth. Plates for efficient, high quality and economical printing of newspapers and more The Kodak booth simultaneously gave Expo visitors an overview of the company’s highly specific portfolio of plates for newspaper and coldset printing. The KODAK SONORA NEWS Process Free Plate, which allows printers to reduce their environmental impact and costs with no quality compromises, is becoming an increasingly attractive option here. The SONORA NEWS Process Free Plate eliminates the need for processing equipment and chemistry, and thus helps newspapers save energy, water, waste and floorspace. The LIBRA VP Plate maximizes productivity by simplified plate processing and delivers the quality and on-press performance required for both newspapers and semi-commercial print applications. Newspaper printers can simplify processing and reduce environmental impact by replacing the traditional developer and replenisher with a single clean-out finisher. With this clean-out finisher, they can further
Kodak at IFRA World Publishing Expo, underlined its leading role when it comes to inkjet solutions for digital and hybrid newsprint. Expo visitors were invited to see for themselves with the help of samples what Kodak’s inkjet technology could do for them. Kodak is the market share leader in sites dedicated to newspaper production with approximately 50% of all inkjet press installations worldwide. In addition, Kodak also has about a hundred KODAK PROSPER S and KODAK VERSAMARK Print Heads installed at newspaper printers around the world, where they are used to imprint variable or personalized content for lotteries, sweepstakes and advertisements, late breaking news and other innovative applications. “Kodak’s portfolio of digital printing technology meets the needs of newspaper companies no matter where they are on the path to digital. The KODAK PROSPER 6000P Press is designed to enable highly productive, high quality digital newsprint and other publishing applications. And the KODAK PROSPER S-Series Imprinting Systems provide printers who have made huge investments in their newspaper offset web presses with attractive digital printing applications to extend their conventional capabilities,” says Randy Vandagriff, President, Enterprise Inkjet Systems Division and Vice President, Eastman Kodak Company. “In other words, Kodak gives newspaper printers an array of options for getting started in digital business depending on their needs.”

Koenig & Bauer in new outfit at WPE 2017 Fewer new presses – more upgrades and online services. At the IFRA World Publishing Expo in Berlin in mid-October, just a few days after the company’s 200th anniversary celebrations, Koenig & Bauer made its first major public appearance in its newly launched corporate design and with the new slogan “we’re on it”. The diverse presentations and discussions at the exhibition booth of the group business units responsible for the newspaper market – KBA-Digital & Web Solutions and PrintHouseService (PHS) – drew attention to the generally reduced number of new press projects, and above all to service-related topics. In the newspaper branch, in particular, the volume of spending to maintain and modernise existing installations has increased significantly in comparison to the investments in brand new presses. Alongside classic services such as retrofits and press relocations, more and more users are seeking upgrades to expand their production options and thus to improve press utilisation. Typical examples are coating units to enable commercial products to be printed on the waterless Cortina newspaper press, facilities for four-page centre spreads and new advertising formats, or stitchers to enhance the user-friendliness of printed newspapers.
New: Lateral stitcher for broadsheet newspapers Ribbon and section stitchers have already been incorporated into web presses for the finishing of tabloid products for some years. For broadsheet newspapers, on the other hand, the expensive option of longitudinal

gluing has to date remained the only solution. That is all about to change, however, with a new lateral stitcher manufactured by Tolerans. The new unit is installed on the former and places staples in the first longitudinal or former fold of each newspaper section, either continuously or intermittently. Two staples per page length is the standard, although KBA-Digital & Web has already received enquiries for three staples per page length. Where certain prerequisites are met, this wish can also be realised.
consumption monitoring system ViSuEnergy. With AR-DataGlass, the specialists at Koenig & Bauer are able to follow the actions of an on-site technician in real time. Intervention times are reduced significantly and there are no misunderstandings due to communication difficulties. VisuEnergy meters and evaluates energy consumption across an entire print company. Another online-based tool is KBA MobileConsole. Designed for use in industrial environments, this tablet serves as a mobile press console with full operating functionality.
The lateral stitcher concept is not limited to just broadsheet products, as demonstrated by the world’s first pilot installation on a Commander press at Herenco Press in Jönköping/Sweden. Here, the belt guide of the KF 80 folder, with its recently retrofitted quarter-fold module, was adapted to implement lateral stitching. With just minimal investment outlay, Herenco Press has thus gained the capability to stitch quarter-fold products inline in a format close to A4. The conveyor chain passes the stitched and folded products directly to the three-knife trimmer and on to the compensating stackers for “bundling”. That reduces both labour costs and waste.
New Commander CL at Druckund Pressehaus Naumann
Internet-based offers on the rise The extended service portfolio of KBA-Digital & Web also includes various Internet-based offers. In its so-called “Active Corner”, for example, KBA-Digital & Web presented a number of augmented reality options and other means to reduce operating costs, such as predictive maintenance or the energy
Despite the widespread reluctance to invest in the international newspaper industry, there are still numerous new press lines being installed and commissioned around the world. Druck- und Pressehaus Naumann in Gelnhausen near Frankfurt, for example, marked the 50th anniversary of the company in September 2017 by commissioning a new Commander CL from Koenig & Bauer, and in doing so has practically doubled its print capacity. On the island of La Réunion in the Indian Ocean, the 20th Cortina waterless press – in a configuration incorporating hot-air dryers – is set to commence production within the next few days. And two further 32-page Cortina press sections will soon be delivered to Coldset Printing Partners in Belgium. Newspapers still holding back on digital print There is currently relatively little movement in the field of digital newspaper printing. It is already some years ago that Koenig & Bauer demonstrated the fundamental suitability of a digital inkjet process for hyperlocal or highly targeted short runs, personalised supplements and special products in the fields of event and reader marketing. With the RotaJET L for web widths from 77 to 138 cm, it can also offer a suitable digital press. With the exception of a few installations for foreign newspapers on islands or in densely populated metropolitan regions, however, the branch remains reluctant to invest in digital print due to the higher costs for consumables and the reduced productivity where longer runs are required.

Second MPS flexo press for Abbey Labels First MPS EF 340 press in Europe with the latest GEW ArcLED UV system. With the first EF 340 MPS installed a little over two years ago, UK-based Abbey Labels has added a second EF 340, eight colour MPS press to its fleet. This latest press is the third of five planned investments made by Abbey Labels during 2017. “The demand for the type of work the first MPS press could produce is constantly increasing, so we felt the need to quickly increase our capacity,” says Abbey Labels Managing Director, Barry Pettit. “Already having an MPS press helps with the continuity of print quality, tooling and availability of trained operators. The installation and commissioning has gone very smoothly and the second press will help us to offer more capacity to our customers for multi-page peel & reveal labels along with mid to longer run reel and sheeting work.” The new MPS EF 340 is the first of its type in Europe to be installed with the latest GEW ArcLED UV system. “When specifying the press, we looked at what other benefits it could offer besides the normal options” says Pettit. “Upon hearing this, MPS
offered Abbey the opportunity to be the first company in Europe to incorporate the GEW ArcLED LED UV curing system onto the EF 340 press. This was an opportunity that we simply couldn’t overlook.” The system installed offers Abbey Labels the opportunity to change seamlessly from traditional arc UV curing to LED curing in a matter of minutes. “The GEW ArcLED system has given us the option to change to LED when we, the ink manufacturers and our customers are ready. LED inks have been available for some time but we feel that we would be compromising our colour gamut
offering at the present time if we converted 100% to LED at this point. This situation we feel could change very quickly as the flexographic market plus our own customers demand more of the benefits and availability of LED ink. The new system from GEW will therefore allow us a much easier switch of technology thus reducing our time to market.” The advantages of having this type of GEW LED curing system gives Abbey Labels an ability to react to the near and longer term demands of the label / packaging market and gives the potential and confidence to lead their customers in ways at looking to improve the environmental impact . The LED system will use up to 50% less power than the conventional UV method of curing ink and also has the added advantage of radiating little or no heat onto the substrate. The LED lamps are currently more expensive than their UV counterpart but they have the distinct and very practical advantage of lasting up to 20 times longer. This will assist in reducing downtime and maintenance during the lifetime of the press which will further reduce the carbon footprint of Abbey Labels’ new investment. “We would seek to ensure that our clients would not notice any difference in ink colour or image quality when compared to a previous print supplied or existing jobs that come through the business. They will however be safe in the knowledge that their labels are being produced in the most energy efficient and environmentally friendly manner possible,” remarks Barry Pettit.

Bhanu Media Centre aims ‘Best of both Worlds’ with their new Xerox 1000i - Combining the best of high-gloss Offset Inks and dots with density of Screen Printing. A decade back, Bhanu Media Centre of Agra started catering to a varied market segment with the traditional commercial offset printers with commercial printing as their main line of business. ‘However with the advent of digital printing we soon realized its potential and made our entry into this segment,” says Suresh Dhanwani, owner of Bhanu Media Centre. With short runs in the commercial printing segment still an important part of their business, Suresh considers it to be the zone of disruption. He looks after the overall administration and business development and is assisted by Mr. Jai Dhanwani who is the Production Head and primarily manages the shop floor.
Xerox 1000i Press has controllable ‘gloss’ which surpasses the quality of High-gloss Offset Printing Inks with the kind of density of Screen Printing and the dots of the Offset that it provides; it is one equipment which can produce the best of both the worlds.
“We started with traditional Commercial Offset printers but eventually forayed into digital printing as a separate division. At present, digital printing has grown to a level wherein it contributes to the business group as a sister concern. Our major area of business still remains the short runs in the commercial printing segment,” says Suresh. Bhanu Media Centre’s principal clientele includes jobbers, screen printers, offset printers etc and the segment catered to by the organisation are Tags, Brochures, Visiting Cards, Point of sale material, Visual lets, etc.
Taking up the Digital Printing route and Xerox 1000i “With the growing demand of personalization taking over almost every industry segment, printing has become more targeted, thereby giving a boost to the digital printing,” observes Suresh. They have also witnessed a steep rise in the volumes in the past decade. Moreover, with the technological rapid advancements, the horizons of creativity have grown by leaps and bounds, making the jobs more complex and almost imperative to take up the Digital Printing route. This leaves the traditional Commercial printers little choice. “In order to continue their hold in the market place, they ought to adopt the technology and explore this new revenue stream. We personally believe that Digital Printing industry has a huge potential,” continues Suresh. With an earlier 400 sq.ft. area dedicated to Digital printing set up, Bhanu is expanding the facility by another 200 sq. ft. which is chiefly to accommodate their new Xerox Color 1000i Press. “We expect a volume increase and greater flexibility with this new investment and hence decided to add more area for a dedicated packing division to ensure smooth operations,” says Suresh.
All behind the decision to invest in Xerox 1000i “We realized,” says Suresh, explaining the decision
Key Notes : >

to invest in Xerox 1000i, “that in order to grow and lead the Digital Printing segment we needed to focus on: • increasing productivity while simultaneously maintaining the quality of the outputs; and • investing in applications which hold promises for the future growth and give us an edge in the market. Keeping the above in mind, we zeroed in on two factors which seemed to be the most critical for growth: • high-gloss printing for the specialty applications; and • clear ink highlighting applications.” “We then analyzed the products in the category of productivity and speed of 6000 prints per hour and compared the various solutions available through different vendors in the market. We found that Xerox stood out as a clear winner by providing Gloss at the rated speeds and the Fifth ink Option,” he adds. Moreover, he is excited that at a later stage, they can easily upgrade up to seven dedicated colours. Another factor which stood out for Xerox was the fact that Bhanu Media Centre was already running a Xerox Versant 80 for over 2 years. “Xerox takes care of imparting trainings to the operators and advanced level of support for creation of new jobs is also one of the major factors,” puts in Suresh.
Adding up the best of both worlds Suresh looks forward to adding more customers with requirements of high gloss printing to their portfolio. The gloss of Xerox 1000i Press can be controlled and it surpasses the quality of High-gloss Offset printing inks with the kind of density of Screen printing and the dots of the Offset that it provides. “Therefore, with one equipment we can produce the best of both the worlds which was not possible with the existing ways of printing,” claims Suresh.
With typical run length range of 1 to 200, the run lengths, says Suresh, also depends on the turnaround time, nature of job, presence of variable data, etc which a customer might need for his job. Internally, Bhanu Media Centre has a training program for its staff. “We firmly believe that gaining an edge in the market depends on the knowledge we have today. Additionally, we have been interacting with the Xerox Support team at various levels to understand the new technologies in the digital printing space,” explains Suresh. With their new Xerox 1000i, Suresh is sure to add more customers with specific requirements in the High-gloss segment and the Clear-ink applications. The specific features that they focused in their Xerox 1000i configuration are the Clear Ink Applications and Specialty Printing segment including the SME & Cottage Industry packing needs which Suresh sees as a major growth driver for them. “A brand is an amalgamation of both – the quality we deliver and the quality produced by the equipment. It is built on the quality and the trust which the customers put on it. If you strive for the quality which you deliver, then the equipment’s capabilities will help you in producing that quality,” says Suresh, appreciating the Xerox quality.
Xerox CP 1000i – a step in the right direction “Investing in Xerox CP 1000i has been a step in the right direction – enabling us to cater the right market segment,” says Suresh. “The results have surpassed our expectations!” With the help of the productivity tools and the increased market opportunities, they have seen a 40% increase in their print volumes and their top line too has improved by 55%. Though, still in the process of introducing new additions to their portfolio, they see potential for tremendous growth in the times to come. “Overall, the journey has been a dream ride and we can certainly say that we’re heading in the right direction at the right time,” sums up Suresh. Moving with a conservative estimate on the growth in volumes, they expect to reach Break Even in 3 years for their current investment.
Suresh sees many key growth areas in Indian Digital Printing industry which include print-on-demand; self-publication; specialty printing on packing materials; personalized communications; personalized packing materials for niche high value products; and variable data printing and applications. And he considers his Xerox 1000i is “a perfect fit to take care of all these and much beyond.” With most modern set-up and facilities, Bhanu Media Centre is at the forefront of technology adoption to answer the ever changing Digital Printing industry. Some of the initiatives that they have undertaken to take care of the present and future, according to Suresh, include, “Upgrade of the facility as the market demand increased; investing in a heavy duty Digital Press (Xerox 1000i); and choosing an equipment which is an upgradable platform (and even allows them to add metallic Inks etc).” Bhanu Media Centre has installed their own internal software that forms the backbone of the organization. It primarily includes CRM, Inventory control and other aspects of the business. Besides, they have also deployed workflow assistant software to plan and control the production on the shop floor. Other key equipment at Bhanu’s set-up include: besides their Xerox 100i and Xerox Versant 80 Press, a Lamination Machines, an Automatic Paper Cutting Machine and a Dominant 4 colour Offset Machine.

Creative Graphics quickly modernizes Tanushii for its pan-India roll-out Standardization of prepress and flexo plates across India gives an edge to brand owners Esko has expanded in the past three years with its new full-fledged plant in Mumbai and the acquisition earlier this year of Color Dot, one of the oldest flexo trade shops in the country. Creative Graphics has renamed its wholly owned Chennai acquisition Tanushii, although the clients, human resources and the location remain the same. Tanushii was already a company with an excellent reputation and a user of Esko Packedge, Plato and Automation Engine software. Now, as a part of its rapid
modernization and integration in the Creative Graphics group, Esko’s Imaging engine and a new Esko CDI Spark 4260 and HD Flexo for digital imaging of flexo plates at the highest quality possible have been installed. Karan Talwar of Esko says, “Creative Graphics investment in replication of processes and the purchase of a third Esko Spark with HD Flexo in a third location shows great confidence in Esko and is a huge endorsement of our products and our team.” The addition of Esko’s imaging engine software and the new Esko CDI Spark and HD Flexo digital imager mean that Creative Graphics plants in Noida, Mumbai and Chennai all use the same software and hardware. This complete replication of technology levels and hardware across all locations means that the company can standardize its processes across all its locations and meet the instant and immediate needs of brand owners and packaging suppliers in the North, West and South of the country with ease.
quality standardization of their packaging across regions. Key to this is that they can specify prepress and flexo plates to be procured from a single qualified and HD Flexo certified supplier who has production facilities in all regions. The use of standardized prepress and digital imaged flexo plates can go a long way in specifying the quality expectations and tolerances from packaging printers and converters. Creative Graphics and Tanushii owner Deepanshu Goel says, “Not only can we help brand owners and converters in achieving uniform quality across all their packaging in the entire country, but we are also offering our employees across all locations the same opportunity to achieve the same quality and success.” At the same time, packaging suppliers can be systematically developed using standardized inputs and parameters and eventually, high quality packaging will look the same and reinforce the brand no matter where in the country it is seen on the shelf.

The labeling market is one of the largest growth segments in the printing industry. The demand for digitally printed labels in particular is recording extremely dynamic and sustained growth. The level of customer interest in the latest labeling solutions from Gallus, a subsidiary of Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg), was thus very high at this year’s Labelexpo trade fair in Brussels at the end of September. Numerous orders for the Gallus Labelfire digital label press as well as for the new Gallus Labelmaster platform are evidence of Heidelberg’s leading role in this market segment. “The labeling market is an important part of our growth strategy,” explained Rainer Hundsdörfer, the company’s CEO. “We’re focusing on the globally increasing demand for labels, produced both digitally or in the conventional way. We’re convinced that our Gallus range will provide a great amount of potential for Heidelberg.” Closer dovetailing of the Gallus organization and the Heidelberg Group will also play its part. For example, important technological components are already being developed jointly in Heidelberg and St. Gallen, some of which are produced at the Heidelberg site in Wiesloch-Walldorf. The new service provisions from Gallus are fully in line with Industry 4.0 – they facilitate higher machine availability for label printers. Gallus and Heidelberg are working together on numerous concrete projects which will bring digitization in the companies forward and offer customers actual added value. For example, in the event of a service request, the Gallus mCall product automates the transfer of machine data to the Gallus service organization, enabling a noticeably faster response time and problem solving process.
Gallus customers also benefit from the virtually completed integration of the Gallus sales and service organizations into the Heidelberg Group. They have a global, blanket coverage network of local Heidelberg service organizations at their disposal, which ensures rapid on-site service.
Numerous orders for the new Gallus Labelfire digital label press At the Labelexpo, Gallus presented the Gallus Labelfire digital label press with enhanced inline finishing processes. As opposed to the digital label presses found on the market which only print digitally and incorporate label postpress activities into a downstream process, the Gallus Labelfire produces finished and die-cut labels in just one production run. Thus the digital printing of finished labels on the Gallus Labelfire guarantees faster production times in conjunction with less paper waste. This means that label printers save time, money and material in comparison with a multi-stage production process, as switching to the downstream postpress process is dispensed with. And thanks to the latest generation of Fujifilm inkjet printheads, the Gallus Labelfire, with a native resolution of 1,200 dpi, ensures print quality that matches that of offset printing. Numerous orders were signed during the trade fair, including by first-time customers from Italy, Austria and Germany. Three customers have already ordered or are using their second press. After the successful premiere of the Gallus Labelmaster during the Gallus Innovation Days in September 2016, Gallus also presented the Gallus Labelmaster Advanced line with multiweb feature

Honaz launches MapleJetProDigit 70
Thanks to its modular design, the Gallus Labelmaster Advanced line impresses with top levels of flexibility and a high degree of automation. The press provides label printers with maximum process variability. This means that the various finishing and printing units at any position in the press can be changed quickly and easily, thus facilitating virtually any configuration, including for the production of complex label products.
Honaz launched its new MapleJetProDigit 70 printer, which incorporates Xaar 502 GS15 O printheads, on its stand at the GulFood Manufacturing Exhibition in the Dubai WorldTrade Centre (31st October-2nd November).
The Gallus Labelmaster stands out due to its special platform design and it can be configured by the customers in line with their individual requirements – on a job by job basis. With open interfaces, this range of machines ensures its users make an extremely secure investment and have the option of responding flexibly to future changes in the market. The demand for this press platform exceeded expectations, resulting in the fastest start-up of a machine system in the history of Gallus. The initial series of more than 20 machines, which will be produced by the end of the year, has already been sold.
Digital printing is the driving force behind the transformation in the growth segment The new Gallus Labelfire 340 digital printing system has been designed for the self-adhesive label market. The global print volume of these labels is growing by around 4 percent each year. The proportion of the volume that is printed digitally is only approximately 6 percent – but this is increasing significantly. Digital printing is therefore influencing the transformation in this highly promising market segment. Forecasts indicate that in the medium term around every second machine sold in this sector will print digitally. With the development and provision of entire workflow solutions for efficient operation of conventional and digital label presses, Heidelberg and Gallus will play an active part in shaping the transformation of the business models in this segment and will be able to offer the users flexible and economic solutions for it.

Veepee Graphics leverages Esko’s Flexo Suite and Kongsberg X20 A flexo trade house that saves money and wins awards for its customers. Bengaluru-based Veepee Graphics is a leading flexo trade shop providing high quality pre-press and digitally imaged flexographic plates to the major printers and converters in the label, flexible packaging and corrugated segments. A loyal user of Esko prepress solutions such as PackEdge, FlexRip and Plato and a pair of CDI imagers, Veepee achieved Esko Full HD Flexo certification on the CDI 4260 imager in 2012. More recently, Veepee invested in Esko’s Digital Flexo Suite (DFS) and a Kongsberg X20 cutting table. This powerful combination of software and specialized output device allows automation of the plate layout and design and with the precision cutting of the plates in unique ways for Veepee Graphics’ customers in each of its three flexo markets.
With precision and automated cutting of the plate edges the risk of damaging the plate by hand cutting is eliminated and the plate mounting is made much easier. The CI flexo presses run more smoothly with reduced or zero bounce from the plate edges.
The Esko Digital Flexo Suite software allows the creation of an overall design and die lines of corrugated boxes where the areas requiring flexo printing are defined with precision and are accurately plotted like the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle. The Kongsberg is used to output the die lines on a Mylar sheet as well as define the decorative text and image areas -- the pieces which are to be output on the flexographic material on the digital imager. After imaging, the flexo plate pieces, which have been numbered for easy placement using the Mylar sheet, are then precisely cut with beveled edges so that there is no ink build-up on the leading edges while printing. With this design efficiency, that accommodate the large unprinted areas of a corrugated box, Veepee is able to offer plates to
corrugators at a lower price than before, while saving them enormous time in producing die lines and plate mounting. Veepee Graphics is the first trade house in India that has purchased a Kongsberg table for cutting flexo plates. Veepee’s managing director Mr. Jai Chandra has always been one of the technology pioneers of the flexo industry in India and he has another innovation up his sleeve. Using the Esko DFS and the Kongsberg X20, he will be able to offer corrugated box printers what will be a one piece plate with the text and image areas already pasted on the Mylar sheet. Mr. Chandra says, “One piece plates using a Mylar backing sheet are already the practice in the U.S., Europe and China and it is only a matter of time before corrugators in India are educated in the best practices and technical requirements of producing quality printed boxes with some measure of cost efficiency. My job is only to make their job easier.” Wide web flexography for flexible packaging which is rapidly growing in India also requires staggered layouts and finishing of plates to eliminate printing issues. Earlier, the staggered layout plates that had to be tediously and carefully cut by hand, were difficult to mount. De-mounting the plates after a print run from the cylinder inevitably caused tearing and made them unfit for reuse. “Prior to our investment in the Kongsberg, we would supply staggered plates but cutting of the plates

happened at the convertor’s end which made it a risky job. Even a minor error would cost them dearly and even spoil the plate altogether. With precision and automated cutting of the plate edges the risk of damaging the plate by hand cutting is eliminated and the plate mounting is made much easier. The CI flexo presses run more smoothly with reduced or zero bounce from the plate edges. Our investment in the Kongsberg X20 has allowed us to offer a value-addition to our customers where we cut the plate with special radial edges free of
charge for them,” explains Mr. Chandra.
VeePee Graphics Full HD Flexo certificate Staggered layouts and precision cutting of flexo plates is also extremely important for narrow web flexo especially for those printers who are producing small pharmaceutical labels. Staggering goes a long way in reducing the banding and gear marks. The staggered layout and precise edge finishing of plates on the Kongsberg allows the printing and inline converting operations to
be better balanced and the press to run at higher speeds. “These innovations and investments are part of our endeavour to be different from our competitors. It is a big investment but it has been worthwhile as we have got lot of appreciation from our customers. In fact one of our customers, Huhtamaki PPL has just won the Worldstar Gold Award for the Horlicks shrink label that was produced using plates supplied by us,” says Mr. Chandra with a smile.

In-mould labels with a plus in efficiency – Heidelberg presents new Speedmaster XL 106-DD rotary die-cutter.
The in-mould label market is continuously growing globally at around 4.3 per cent (Awa Global Inmould Study 2017), and more than two thirds of the worldwide production is required for food packaging. Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) is now offering an enhanced rotary die-cutter based on the XL technology, in addition to food-safe, highly efficient print production. The Speedmaster XL 106-DD unites two key production steps in a single machine – a unique combination in the market. The rotary die-cutter’s first unit places the injection hole in the label for the subsequent production process by means of a die on a magnetic cylinder with maximum precision. Even the tiniest holes of five millimeters diameter or more are possible. Up to now, this was a separate step that consequently extended the production time of the respective job.
Heidelberg presents the entire range of solutions for in-mould, wet glue, and self-adhesive labels at the Label Day and LabelExpo.
The cut out material is safely and reliably removed by means of an extraction system. The second unit of the XL 106-DD subsequently cuts out the contour of the label from the sheet. At the end of the day, this combination of the two production steps in a single pass means a downright doubling of the die-cutting throughput, while makeready times and costs for die cutting tools can be reduced to half of the previously required. The XL 106-DD processes foils and paper with thicknesses of 0.05 to 0.3 mm at a throughput of 6,000 to 10,000 sheets per hour – almost twice as fast than a flatbed die-cutter. The costs for die cutting tools are usually in the range of EUR 300 to 1,000, and the machine is typically set up in 15 minutes.
Key Notes : > Double the throughput, half the makeready times and tool costs. >
One pass productivity: completely die-cut in-mould labels for further processing in a single pass.
> Fully flexible: Speedmaster XL 106-DD processes plastics and paper.

October 2017
Injection holes of five millimeters diameter and more can be cut, thus all the needs that are customary in the industry can be met. Apart from in-mould labels, the XL 106-DD can also cut plastic or paper packaging elements, such as POS items which, due to their design, need a “window” or hole for mounting in the shelf or for attaching to the product.
Events show a wide-ranging portfolio for the label market Apart from the XL 106-DD, Heidelberg presented the entire range of print and postpress solutions for in-mould, wet glue and self-adhesive labels to the around 200 Label Day participants at the Print Media Center in Wiesloch-Walldorf at the end of September.

Extensive field test for BST eltromat’s innovative POWERScope 5000 Customers expect efficient and reliable quality control – BST eltromat’s web guiding systems ensure that the printed material passes perfectly. bsb-label is one of two beta site customers to participate in an extensive field test of BST eltromat’s innovative POWERScope 5000 web monitoring system. As a manufacturer of high-quality roll labels, bsb-label covers a particularly wide range of market requirements. Book, screen, flexo, and digital printing – with its ten printing machines featuring various technologies, bsb label GmbH can offer its customers the full range of options when it comes to labeling, marking, and decorating products. “In eight of our ten printing machines, BST eltromat’s web guiding systems ensure that the printed material passes perfectly,” states Brigitte Alers, managing director of the Bielefeld-based roll label specialist. “In addition to that, we verify the print quality in three machines using the manufacturer’s video systems.” The bsblabel systems from BST eltromat are also used for the high-speed stamping presses from Feldbaum + Vogt and inside the converting machines of Grafisk Maskinfabrik. The partnership of these two companies goes back to 2008. At that time, bsb-label replaced the web edge guiding systems and web monitoring in its narrow-web Gallus ECS 340 flexo printing machine with solutions from BST eltromat. “Our sister company bsb-proprint had been using systems from BST eltromat for years already,” shares Alers, remembering how their relationship came about. Since the end of 2014, bsb-label has been using the SHARK 4000 LEX 100% inspection system to inspect large label rolls in a production machine. The system inspects the

labels on the rolls to see if they correspond to the reference labels and verifies that the matrix are properly removed. In spring of 2016, BST eltromat asked bsb-label if it would be interested in participating in a beta test of its POWERScope 5000 digital web monitoring system, which was new at the time. Then in mid-2016 it was installed in the Gallus ECS 340, which bsb-label uses to produce a wide variety of different roll labels. “Many customers expect us to have complete control over their products. They can utilize the full potential of their machines only if the machines produce perfect label rolls,” stresses Peter Bellmann, bsb-label’s head of printing department, referring to the importance of quality assurance in label production.
application parameters into the menu, such as format lengths and widths. They can accomplish that by selecting shortcut keys on the external keyboard or by using the multitouch screen.
The new system for narrow and mediumwidth printing processes, which was presented at drupa in 2016, was completely redeveloped by BST eltromat. Compared to the previous version (the POWERScope 4000), all key components were to be improved, starting with the traverse where the camera is mounted and positioned in the printing machines, to the camera and software, which included the user interface. Improved user-friendliness In light of the variety and complexity of the market requirements, bsb-label places a high value on ease of use. “With the POWERScope 5000, BST eltromat simplified the user interface to include only the necessary functions, which resulted in a particularly clean design,” points out Daniel Dießelhorst, who is responsible for strategic purchasing at bsb-bentlage, remarking on the system’s improvements. Machine operators only need to enter a few
Quality control at all times The split-screen function enables machine operators to contrast paused live images from the production process with reference images on the 21.5-inch wide multitouch screen – with outstanding image quality. It also allows paused images to be compared with the live images, and for image sections to be enlarged with the wear-free, electronic zoom, free of distortions. This makes is easier to view the details of the printed labels, such as the quality of the registers, and to reliably detect any irregularities. Even the punching lines are clearly visible. The digital camera provides high resolution, while the high-performance LED flash illuminates the webs evenly.
On top of that, the POWERScope 5000 reduces the number of work steps required. “We can save settings, such as camera positions with image sections or the zoom factor, and then access these again at any time. The camera automatically moves to the corresponding positions. We need one to two minutes at most to set up the system for each job,” says Bellmann. With up to five job changeovers daily on this machine, this saves considerable time and money over the course of a year.
“No BST eltromat system has experienced a failure yet,” says Dießelhorst, confirming the reliability of the technology. It’s possible that bsb-label will modify further printing machines with the POWERScope 5000. The system’s compact design will play a key role in this process. “With our high production speeds, our printers need systems that reliably detect print quality, including the register. BST eltromat’s systems work so well that we don’t have to worry about this anymore,” adds Bellmann, summarizing the company’s experience so far. Our customers no longer receive defective labels. And the quality assurance process is easy to document.

Xaar technology moves 3D Printing towards volume manufacturing In his presentation, Chris will also explain why digital inkjet, and specifically Xaar’s TF Technology and High Laydown Technology, is at the heart of the solution, delivering both a fast and a scalable 3D manufacturing process which is robust as well as economical.
A new era for manufacturing This year’s InPrint show in Munich will see Xaar’s Chris Noble highlight how inkjet – and Xaar technology, in particular – is transforming 3D Printing from a prototype industry to volume production. During his conference talk “Opportunities in 3D Printing for Inkjet” on 15th November, Chris will explain how inkjet technology is ideally placed to deliver 3D Printing’s transformation to volume manufacturing, exploring the benefits and growth of 3D Printing in general, and the key enablers to accelerate the industry’s growth.
3D Printing as a manufacturing methodology encompasses a range of processes and applications all focusing on building parts up, usually layer by layer. It is a highly attractive methodology, not just because it eliminates the need for tooling, but also because it provides superior geometric freedom, giving product designers much more capability, whilst substantially reducing product design and production lead time. In addition, 3D Printing enables customisation of products to individual consumers, decentralisation of manufacturing and reduction of storage space required for spare parts – not to mention the time, environmental and cost
benefits delivered with these. Commenting on his presentation, Chris said, “To date, 3D Printing technologies have often been used to produce prototypes and one-offs. Whilst for many businesses globally there is a definite value to be had in this, the opportunities with inkjet technology are now creating even greater excitement and buzz around 3D Printing and its potential to deliver reliable, repeatable systems for high volume manufacturing.” As well as at Chris’s presentation on 15th November, information on Xaar’s 3D Printing solutions will be available on the Xaar stand alongside the company’s complete range of inkjet printheads and supporting products.
