Heidelberg generates major interest at Print China 2015 Highlights the integration of digital and offset applications and presents Linoprint CV and Jetmaster Dimension 250 in China for the first time.
Speedmaster CS 92 premiere proved a popular response to the rising demand for cost efficiency and the main print formats used in Asia. The new machine can cut printing plate costs by over 20 percent.
This year, Print China 2015 once again lived up to its reputation as Asia’s largest trade show for the printing industry. Over 190,000 visitors took the opportunity to find out about current and future print media industry topics in Dongguan in Guangdong Province from April 7 to 12, 2015. Heidelberg has been represented in China for many years and knows customer needs for integrated and efficient solutions, enhanced service, and new applications like no other supplier. The products, geared precisely to these trends, thus generated high levels of interest among the Asian visitors. A particular highlight was the integration of digital and offset applications. The new Linoprint CV digital printing systems and the Jetmaster Dimension 250 for 4D printing were presented in China for the first time. The premiere of the four-color Speedmaster CS 92 proved a popular response to the rising demand for cost efficiency and the main print formats used in Asia. This machine has been specially developed for Asia and cuts printing plate costs by over 20 percent thanks to its new sheet format. Both the digital and offset presses were integrated via the Prinect print shop workflow. “Asia is one of the key markets for us and we were able to showcase our integrated digital and offset printing applications to a large number of visitors. We’re delighted with how the trade show went and the interest in the solutions exhibited was high, as we had expected,” says Harald Weimer, member of the Management Board responsible for sales
and services at Heidelberg. With 4D printing, Heidelberg highlighted possibilities that transcend the two-dimensional printing of flat materials that has characterized the last few centuries. This opens up totally new prospects for print shops to fulfill the growing demand for personalized consumer goods and proved to be a big draw for visitors. The new Speedmaster CS 92 also met market needs, with sales of almost twenty presses. The services and consumables sector was a key feature of the Heidelberg booth alongside equipment. There were large numbers of visitors inquiring about solutions to increase machine availability and about support for complex printing applications, with the result that numerous contracts were concluded. So it comes as no surprise that every second press is already supplied with Remote Service to ensure the fastest possible service. And this figure is continuing to grow, with all presses from the Qingpu site near Shanghai being shipped with a service contract.
Growth market of digital printing – Linoprint CV and Jetmaster Dimension 250 4D printing system produce a “wow” effect Like everywhere else in the world, Chinese print shops are also harnessing the potential of digital printing. The new Linoprint CV from Heidelberg with white/coating function offers users even greater flexibility for cost-effective printing of short and

x 940 millimeters (25.59 x 37.01 inches), it cuts printing plate costs by 20 percent over a conventional 70 x 100 centimeter (27.56 x 39.37 inch) press. The Speedmaster CS 92 is based on the tried-and-tested platform of the Speedmaster CD 102. It is equipped with the Preset Plus Feeder and Preset Plus Delivery, Prinect Press Center Compact, and AutoPlate for fast setup as standard. The target groups are commercial and packaging printers.

personalized runs. The Linoprint CV also supports a wide range of substrates. The Jetmaster Dimension 250 digital printing system has been specially developed for print service providers looking to build up new business areas. This system prints three-dimensional objects with personalized content – hence the name 4D printing. At Print China, the Jetmaster Dimension printed over 500 soccer balls with customized content and exceeded all expectations. “We’d like to build on the wow effect generated here. We have a lot of people interested in this technology and will be launching the Jetmaster Dimension on the Chinese market by the end of the year,” says Weimer.
The Speedmaster CS 92-4 will be produced in proven Heidelberg quality at the Qingpu plant near Shanghai. Since the start in 2006, this site has supplied over 5,000 printing units or over 1,350 presses in the Speedmaster SM 52, SM 74, and CD 102 series. Four-color standard presses are produced for the small and medium formats, while up to six colors including coating unit
The new Gallus DCS 340 digital labeling system was also unveiled at Print China 2015. This is a joint project between Heidelberg, Gallus, and Fujifilm that shows the opportunities offered by the new partner strategy at Heidelberg. By accessing partner technologies, Heidelberg is able to meet customer needs very rapidly¬. For example, the prototype of the new digital labeling system was developed and presented to the public in less than fourteen months.
Offset printing – new Speedmaster CS 92 successfully unveiled Special print formats are mainly used for production in commercial printing in Asia, and the new Speedmaster CS 92-4 is a response to this. With its print format of 650

are supplied for the 70 x 100 centimeter (27.56 x 39.37 inch) format. Heidelberg was therefore quick to respond to the increasing requirements of Asian customers. Over five percent of Chinese production is now exported to neighboring Asian countries and this proportion is rising.
Close to the customer China remains one of the largest single markets for Heidelberg. Four branches in Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Hong Kong and two offices in Chengdu and Guangzhou ensure comprehensive customer support locally. A total of over 1,000 Heidelberg employees work in China, including more than 600 in sales and service. A Print Media Center is to be opened at the Qingpu site this fall to give customers a practical overview of the Heidelberg portfolio. The new Linoprint CV digital printing system from Heidelberg with white/coating function offers users even greater flexibility for cost-effective printing of short and personalized runs.

Sun Chemical at the European Coatings Show During the European Coatings Show 2015, Sun Chemical presented an original scientific paper at the Coatings Congress and two additional presentations about metallic pigments for automotive and architectural coatings during the exhibition. The original scientific paper titled “Instrumental Measurement of Transparency that Matches Human Perception,” was presented by Dr. Paul Merchak on April 21st during the Testing and Measuring II session of the European Coatings Congress. The presentation of the scientific paper explained how ratings of transparency by human perception often do not correlate with the contrast ratio or other single point measures of transparency. Dr. Merchak showed that to overcome these correlation issues, transparency can be divided into four optical properties: haze, scatter, bronze and gloss. He showed how measurements on a diffuse sphere spectrophotometer for these four properties can accurately compare to the human assessment of transparency for pigmented systems. Dr. Merchak currently serves as the director of Applications Science Laboratory at Sun Chemical, and has been active in pigment development, pigment evaluation for plastics, coatings, ink, cosmetics, and various other specialty applications.
Another presentation during the ECS was by Martin Baier. He introduced Benda-Lutz SPLENDAL vacuum metalized aluminum pigments and showed how they can be used for automotive interior and exterior coatings. Benda-Lutz SPLENDAL metallic pigments offer a unique level of brilliance and reflectivity in coatings, but have specific application requirements to reach their optimal level. On April 23rd, Andreas Kreutzer talked about Benda-Lutz MAXAL EC for durable architectural powder coatings. The presentation showed how Benda-Lutz MAXAL EC provides metallic effects with outstanding optical properties and industryleading chemical resistance for architectural powder coatings. Benda-Lutz metallic and special effect pigments were on display at the European Coatings Show 2015 in Nuremberg, Germany on April 21-23 at Sun Chemical’s booth. Sun Chemical, a member of the DIC group, is one of the largest producers and providers of printing inks and pigments and materials to packaging, publication, coatings, plastics, cosmetics, and other industrial markets. With annual sales of more than $3.5 billion, Sun Chemical has over 8,000 employees supporting customers around the world.
The DPA elects new team for 2015-16 The Delhi Printers’ Association elected the new team for the year 2015-2016 at its Annual General Meeting held on April 24, 2015. Mr. O.P.Dewan of Dewan Offset Printers
has been elected President. Mr. Sunil Jain of Graphic Print has been elected General Secretary and Mr. Rajiv Gupta of Press of India is the new Treasurer.
Sun Chemical and DIC combine technologies to make superior coatings Sun Chemical and its parent company, DIC, came together as one company at the European Coatings Show 2015 to explain how its product families of pigments and resins can be used together to create enticing coatings for a full range of coatings applications in the automotive, architectural, plastic and industrial industries. At its ECS 2015 stand, Sun Chemical Performance Pigments showcased its broad portfolio of effect, high performance and classical pigments and preparations, including its Benda-Lutz SPLENDAL for plastic automotive interiors, Benda-Lutz MAXAL EC for extra durable architectural coatings, and Sunsperse ECO dispersions for industrial finishes. DIC was also on hand to show how combining Sun Chemical’s pigments capabilities with its high functionality resins and additives, including BURNOCK acrylics polyurethane resins, CERANATE polysiloxane-acrylic hybrids, and MEGAFACE additives, can provide all the key ingredients needed for superior coatings products. When MAXAL EC is used together with DIC’s CERANATE polysiloxane- acrylic hybrid resins, coatings formulators produce an exceptionally durable, stain resistant, and self-cleaning coating. CERANTE waterborne resins can be ambient cured with the DIC WATERSOL curing agent to produce clear or pigmented finishes with the same outstanding weatherstability of fluoropolymer chemistries. In addition, CERANTE coatings are self-cleaning and highly stain resistant, making them ideal for high volume, low maintenance applications ranging from outdoor living spaces to aluminum cladding and commercial buildings. Visitors could discover how WATERSOL resins are formulated with 100 percent post-consumer Sunfast Elastomer Black for environmentally-friendly coatings that feature increased performance and adhesion in plastic.

Trade show banner “KBA: Sprint to Profit” well received by the Chinese KBA posts positive half-time results at Print China in Guangdong The KBA Group announced a positive verdict on group performance in the first three days of Print China in Guangdong which finished on 12 April. Its 1,000m2 stand proved popular and its clear message “KBA: Sprint to Profit” shown on a large LED wallscreen and backed up with a host of print samples from KBA’s broad print technology portfolio had a positive effect on order books. Longstanding and new customers ordered half-, medium- and large-format Rapidas in various configurations. However, the medium-format Rapida 105 dominated new order intake in China. There are also projects in the pipeline for the new Rapida 105 PRO announced at Print China. The new press has been positioned between the proven Rapida 105 and the high-end Rapida 106. The Rapida 105 Pro will be officially unveiled at an open house in June at the KBA plant in Radebeul. Live demos of a KBA Rapida 105-5+L and a Rapida 75-4+L with LED-UV printing attracted flocks of visitors and print samples were being snapped up. KBA adopted the role of trendsetter in terms of saving energy and environmentally friendly LED-UV printing in Europe and sees opportunities for this technology in the Chinese market which is becoming increasingly ecologically orientated. Moreover, the sheets can be sent immediately to postpress. Other highlights at the trade show included inline and online quality control as well as the launch of MIS CIP4-workflow Complete Druck.X. KBA also exhibited a folding carton gluer in 96 x 110cm format (37.8 x 43.3in).
Sheetfed orders from B2 to large format Qianjiang Fenghua Printing ordered a fourcolour Rapida 75. This is the commercial and packaging printing firm’s first KBA press. “We are looking forward to working with KBA and are convinced that we will be able to increase

our productivity and boost profit with this new press,” says Li Xiaohua, general manager of Fenghua. After ordering a Rapida 145 last year, internet printer Zhengzhou Shengda Color Printing placed an order for a second Rapida 145 at the trade show. General manager Cui Wenfeng: “The Rapida 145 is a highly automated, robust and high-performance press. We will be able to enhance our capacity considerably with the second press. Moreover, we are very pleased with the service we have received from KBA.”
KBA: Print Solutions for All China has been one of KBA’s key global markets for many years. Some 20 per cent of all Rapidas from half to large-format go to China. Renowned Chinese newspapers are printed on KBA presses as well as magazines, commercial printwork, books, board packaging, banknotes and metal sheets for cans. The KBA Group also sees additional market opportunities for its innovative technology in the digital, coding and hollow glass and plastic container decorating segments. The company is therefore presenting a raft of offerings at
the trade show under the banner “KBA: Print Solutions for All”. The print samples distributed in Guangdong from the flexible KBA RotaJET L high-volume inkjet platform with web widths from 89 to 130cm (35 51.2in) were well received. Samples of flexible packaging printed on presses from KBA-Flexotecnica and decorated glass bottles produced on screen printing and digital systems from KBA-Kammann have also been in demand. These bottles are extremely popular in China and up until now are still being decorated by hand for containing high-quality rice liquor. KBAKammann recently opened a showroom in Shanghai to promote the mechanical direct decoration of premium quality hollow containers. The marking and coding specialists from KBA-Metronic have produced inkjet coding systems for the Chinese market at KBA-Metronic (Hangzhou) for over a year. Walter Zehner, CEO of KBA China: “At Print China we are showing that we can offer our Chinese customers proven solutions for almost all printing needs. This fact is still not known throughout China and we aim to promote our image as a solutions supplier.”

Q.I. Press Controls active for Book Printing market Q.I. Press Controls is active for the book printing market. During Printpack India 2015, the organisation got in serious contact with the people of Pressline, who just introduced a new range of web-offset machines for the production of books: the Bookline Series. Pressline decided to invest in a first installation of the mRC-3D on one of their new book printing presses. When the solution works satisfactorily, Q.I. Press Controls gets the opportunity for more business on other book printing presses of this press manufacturer. Printpack India 2015 was held from the 11th to the 15th of February. Q.I. Press Controls had a nicely located and well arranged booth that attracted lots of attention. Mr. Vijay Pandya, managing director of Q.I. Press Controls India, states: “We have received good inquiries from book printers as from small newspaper printers. Automation solutions like ours are in demand.”
Pressline India was located opposite to the booth of Q.I. Press Controls. At the exhibition, the two companies started talking more serious. Soon after the exhibition, Pressline India decided to invest in the mRC-3D for the Bookline Series. The order consists of 2 mRC-3D cameras for register control for one web on a press out the Pressline Bookline Series. In an interview with WAN IFRA, Mr.Scott Sutherland, MD said “XCP Press Protection products have been specially developed for the printing industry. Throughout the development of the product, we worked with OEM’s, employed printing industry standards and test methods, and importantly specifically looked at ‘all’ the surfaces found on a modern day printing press. XCP is used by many of the biggest printers worldwide. The product is recommended by manroland and complies with all other relevant OEM recommendations (WIFAG, etc.).

Kuruvilla Abraham of 3N Vision – the Market Development partner for XCP product range for the sub-continent – introduced XCP as a supplier of products of unmatched quality for protection from corrosion. XCP Press Protection products are tested and approved as per FOGRA standards; and endorsed by leading German manufacturers like MAN Roland for both Web- and Sheet-fed machines; and Heidelberg. The products are thus designed for “Cradle to Grave Protection” of any printing machine. Arguably, printing machines are the most valuable assets of a printer and therefore protecting them from corrosion is a necessity than an option. Printers can trust something that has been developed especially for their application, i.e. relevant surface protection, drying speeds that do not impact under-packing foil adhesion strength, etc. Furthermore, if used as part of regular press maintenance it has also been found that areas treated with XCP become easier to clean due to the soft coating laid down on the surface of the metal. QuadTech’s introduces new Titanium level QuadTech has announced that it will bolster its Service Advantage technical support agreement programs by offering enhanced features to all levels, as well as adding a new, fully comprehensive “Titanium” level. Service Advantage is the company’s tiered structure that allows printers to choose the most cost-effective levels of service and support agreements to match budgets and business needs. The program also includes substantial discounts for software upgrades, spare parts, field service labour rates, training, 24/7/365 technical phone support, and system-specific preventive maintenance. The new Titanium level caps printers’ annual system service budget, and provides top priority remote and on-site service, including technician travel costs. The comprehensive
plan was created to provide printers with total peace of mind that their service needs are covered-with no budget surprises and their overall plan contract spend is much more cost-effective than purchasing service, support, spare parts, and maintenance offcontract on an as-needed basis. Previously offered Silver, Gold and Platinum levels have been enhanced with additional discounts, 24/7/365 technical phone support, remote services for systems on QuadTech’s ICON platform, and other added features. New “Add-on Plus+ Optional Services” are also available, designed to optimize and extend the useful life of printers’ system and provide for a quick ROI for their limited service budget.

Elwin Street embraces Ricoh’s digital book production at London Book Fair London publishing house Elwin Street has turned to Ricoh’s digital printing production technology to enable it to promote new titles at this years’ London Book Fair, April 14 to 16, Olympia. The collaboration sees Ricoh’s cut sheet digital presses used to print books on demand. It allows the ten year old independent co-edition packager with a prestigious international client base, to produce small quantities of offset-like quality books. This will help them more cost effectively market their new trade list as part of the Modern Books focus at the key threeday publishing event. Modern Books features illustrated, practical titles for mindful living, with healthy eating, parenting, active ageing and creativity being core categories. Titles printed by Ricoh’s digital cutsheet technology will include: The Vegetarian Year by Jane Hughes, endorsed by the UK Vegetarian Society; The Alkaline Cookbook by Dr Stephan Domenig and the Alkaline Cleanse, the follow up to the bestselling Alkaline Cure; Love, Aimee x featuring 50 original, creative desserts from Aimee Twigger’s kitchen, as featured on her popular blog. Silvia Langford, Director of Elwin Street,
comments: “We are a packager of trade books, specialising in popular science and cookery. To date we have printed everything using offset print, so being able to print small quantities of our new titles before they are fully published was not always economically viable. However, since we met Ricoh at last years’ London Book Fair, we have found the possibilities their digital presses can open up very interesting. Their ability to produce books with high production values in very small quantities enables us to show our clients what new titles will look like. We expect this will help us to close more sales.” “At Ricoh we see Publishing as a significant opportunity for our digital print technologies,”

Flint Group, Bobst, Esko and partners present new project at Sino-Corrugated 2015 In recent years, the Chinese flexo printing market steadily increased with significant progress in quality. However, there is still room for improvement and a long way to go, especially in the packaging area. Another aspect is the higher attention to environmental protection, which will stimulate the development of flexo printing in China. Corrugated, which has a considerable portion of this segment, also shows strong growth. To date, printing on corrugated boxes was quite simple just to meet the needs of a transportation container. To push the development of corrugated post printing in China, Bobst started together with Flint Group, Esko and other partners the initiative “Flexo goes Green”, which stands for sustainability, productivity and quality. This project was presented during the SinoCorrugated 2013 fair in Shanghai, gaining a lot of attention. Meanwhile, there is a trend to more sophisticated packaging, and the new role of corrugated can be described as “from the brown box to branding”. By this means, packaging is becoming part of marketing
The boxes have been printed in a joint cooperation of the project partners
and sales activities to more and more attract the consumer’s attention. To further develop this important market segment, the partners decided to proceed with the “Flexo goes Green” initiative and to present two new corrugated boxes at the Sino-Corrugated 2015 fair. The boxes have been printed in a joint cooperation of the project partners with Flint Group’s environmental friendly water-based ink, FLEXOPAK C, and photopolymer printing plate, nyloflex® ART 284 Digital. This plate is ideally suited for printing on all kinds
of fibre surfaces, e.g. high quality post print on corrugated board with very good reproduction of highlight dots and excellent and consistent ink transfer. The job with screen ruling of 133lpi ran on a Bobst 160 Vision VI press, with die-cutting on a Bobst SPO 160 Vision. In this specific segment of premium post printing with a thin flexo plate (thickness 2.84 mm), Bobst is in a leading position in China. The artwork was delivered by the local tradeshop, Kunshan Fuhua, with an Esko system. “With this new project, the cooperation partners demonstrated the clear progress of corrugated post print, which could be achieved during the last two years,” says QiHong-Magenta Zheng, General Manager Flint Group Flexographic Products China. “We are proud to be a part and a driving force of this process.” All the partners commit to the initiative “Flexo goes Green” and will continue stimulating flexo printing in China to a higher level of sustainability, productivity and quality so that further breakthroughs can be expected.

Inception of LED UV technology at Constantia Flexibles Constantia Flexibles has worked closely with Flint Group Narrow Web and Phoseon Technology since early in 2014 to implement LED UV technology onto Spear’s printing presses. The initial discussion revolved around the various ecological and economical advantages that can be realised when running LED UV lamps and inks. The Spear plant was particularly interested in the possibility of increased run speed, improved performance, and the reduced energy consumption as compared with a conventional mercury system which would support sustainability objectives. The discussions resulted in Constantia Flexible’s decision to retrofit existing presses with UV LED lamps. It was during initial trials that Constantia Flexibles had firsthand experience with the power of LED UV. Bob Feldman of the Spear plant explains, “For us, the initial investment into LED started with a challenge; screen ink curing is the limiting factor when it comes to speed. We wanted Flint Group to help drive our costs down and the biggest obstacle was
run speed.” Bob continues, “Flint Group came in with an Uptime Solutions programme aligned to our Lean Six Sigma – using both, we initiated a challenge to test the limits of our press. Over the course of one week, a 12 person team performed 48 different trials with six inks, two curing systems, and two workflows in two press conditions. Performance indicators were defined and measured carefully.” “What really excited us was speed improvement – with LED UV curing, we were able to increase our speeds by 50% of our baseline, and that was just the initial result. Operating temperatures were lower than with mercury curing equivalents. And, there were no cure issues and no discernable performance differences with ink coverage and mileage.” The Mason plant ultimately experienced over 50% run speed improvements with UV flexo and screen inks. In addition, the LED UV system used 25% of the power that a
conventional mercury system used. The combination of power savings and increased run speed sealed the deal for Constantia Flexibles. The lamps chosen for the Spear plant are Phoseon Technology Firepower LED lamps and the LED UV inks by Flint Group Narrow Web are the under the brand name of EkoCure. Says Guillaume Clement, Vice President Global Narrow Web, “Flint Group and Phoseon would like to thank Constantia Flexibles for the opportunity to perform extended tests with LED UV. This testing helps both companies, and the industry, see the true possibilities that can be achieved with new technology. Innovation which delivers sustainable economical advantages for our customers is our mission. It is greatly appreciated to have a partner like Spear who is willing to push the technological boundaries of success.”

FINAT launches call for candidates for 2015 Recycling Awards FINAT Recycling Awards Competition organized for the second time to recognize efforts of the industry in paper and film release liner recycling
FINAT has recently announced the launch of the second FINAT Recycling Awards Competition. Within two award categories, self-adhesive label endusers and self-adhesive label converters, companies that have their paper and/ or film release liners recycled are invited to apply, and get recognized for taking steps to lower the environmental impact. The deadline for submitting entries is May 22nd and the competition will culminate in the announcement of the winners at the European Label Forum in Amsterdam, held from 11 to 13 June 2015. The goal of the FINAT Recycling Awards Competition is to raise awareness for the growing number of sustainable and economically-viable recycling programmes. These offer companies site-specific solutions for the collection and recycling of used release liners, allowing them to reduce both their carbon footprint and land-filling costs. “We were delighted by the large number of good entries to our first Recycling Awards Competition last year. We are looking forward to continue this success and see
new examples of how the industry is rising to the challenge and embracing the available recycling solutions,” says Jacques van Leeuwen, Chairman of the FINAT Recycling Awards Competition.
that no longer needs to go to waste. The FINAT Recycling Awards Competition is an excellent opportunity to highlight the advances recycling programs are making in our industry,” adds Mr. van Leeuwen
It pays to recycle
Award criteria
Release line recycling is important, not only for the environment but also for label converters and printers. It contributes to the reduction of the ‘footprint’ of a label company, FMCG brand or private label which is becoming ever more essential because of the growing emphasis on corporation’s responsibility towards society and the planet. In addition, release line recycling also offers economic advantages as it can reduce the costs associated with the management of secondary release liner materials, compared to alternative disposal methods. It also provides a potential answer to legal or market requirements in the context of government or corporate environmental sustainability programmes, now and in the future.
All entries will be judged by an independent jury comprised of expert representatives from NGOs in the field of recycling of both paper and plastic. Eligible projects will be evaluated based on a comprehensive set of criteria, divided in three categories:
“As an independent association for the selfadhesive label industry, FINAT has set itself the target to support companies in exploring and exploiting common recycling solutions and provide the gateway to identify recycling opportunities. Release liner recycling is picking up pace. More and more, recycling initiatives are offering turn-key solutions to recover a valuable secondary material
•
•
•
Achievements (volume and percentage recycled): How much liner (in volume and percentage) does the company recycle? Is this traceable? Does the company recycle other secondary label materials? Communication and promotion: Is the company actively involved in the promotion of release liner recycling? Is the company making efforts to encourage partners/customers to engage in recycling? Innovation / opening of new markets: Is the company using a new/innovative approach to logistics or recycling? Is the company representing a new enduser market for liner recycling?
All entries must be submitted by 22nd of May to the FINAT Secretariat.

Asahi Photoproducts brings leading edge flexographic plate solutions to Converflex 2015 Pinning Top Dot technology supports fixed colour palette printing techniques with no compromise in quality Asahi Photoproducts, a pioneer in flexographic photopolymer plate development, will be exhibiting at Converflex 2015, taking place from 19-23 May in Milan. Asahi will be featuring its Pinning Top Dot plate technology, which enables a broad colour gamut, vibrant colour reproductions, soft tonal shades and improved productivity.
TOP and water-washable AWP plates, Pinning Top Dot technology (PDT) enables a clean ink transfer and prevents ink accumulating on the plate surfaces and shoulders in screen areas. This leads to fewer cleaning intervals and reduced downtime, as well as significant quality improvements.
“We are excited to be attending Converflex 2015,” says Andrea Belloli, Italian branch manager for Asahi. “Initial feedback to our Pinning Top Dot technology, which was announced last year, has been extremely positive and we are looking forward to sharing its benefits with attendees at the show.”
Pinning Dot Technology allows a kiss-touch printing pressure setting. It makes use of low plate surface tension, made possible by a specially engineered Asahi polymer chemistry, to inhibit liquid flow. The ink forms a globule, with a large contact angle and high pinning point. This results in a cleaner and homogeneous ink transfer from plate to substrate, helping flexographic printers meet the ever increasing quality demands of their customers.
David Galton, UK Sales Director for Asahi Photoproducts, adds, “Converflex is an excellent platform for showcasing Pinning Top Dot technology. The print quality achieved by combining our plate technology with fixed colour palette printing techniques brings outstanding shelf appeal to packaging. Print consistency is crucial to brands’ ability to drive sales volumes by increasing visibility, reinforcing identity and ensuring volume turnover. Pinning Top Dot was designed to improve the quality of the emerging fixed colour palette printing technique, which delivers cost benefits to the brand owner without any compromise in quality. Excellent results have been achieved by working collaboratively with creative agencies, brand owners and printers to take advantage of these unique capabilities, and show attendees will be able to see the results first hand.”

viscosity for the post-printed corrugated printing market. The resin is a hybrid solution that combines the advantages of liquid resin with the technical properties of a solid plate. Belloli adds, “Asahi first brought innovative liquid resin technology to market more than 40 years ago, and we are proud that the innovation continues today. This latest liquid resin offering will help customers maintain a leadership position in the highly competitive corrugated market. Both HybridA and Pinning Top Dot technologies will be key elements to our market and we are pleased to be bringing these to Converflex 2015!”

Sappi launches a new dimension in Folding Box Board: atelier Sappi Speciality Papers has announced the introduction of atelier, a brand-new concept in folding box board (FBB) that broadens Sappi’s offering in terms of both width and depth of coated virgin fibre carton boards for the packaging market. atelier, a hybrid FBB product that exceeds current market standards, is available in weights from 220 gsm to 350 gsm and is being produced at the company’s Maastricht mill. atelier is a multi-ply board produced on a single-wire board machine, a feature that no other paper manufacturer has ever achieved. It delivers the ultimate in brightness, purity and gloss with a silk touch and feel and unrivalled bulk, truly a new dimension in folding box board. “This introduction is part of Sappi’s ongoing strategy to increase its production of speciality products in response to growing market demand”, explains Thomas Kratochwill, Director Sales & Marketing Specialities. “Ten years ago, we entered the carton board market and set out to revolutionise it with the Sappi Algro Design family of SBB carton board, which is still growing at double-digit rates today,” says Lars Scheidweiler, Product Group Manager Rigid Packaging of Sappi Europe. “Now we are going to do it again with atelier. The new Sappi FBB combines our signature bright-white finish with the rigidity and strength required in a folding box board to deliver perfect functionality with any type of carton board printing, converting, finishing or post-production handling that can be imagined. We are extremely excited to be bringing this new hybrid FBB to our European customers.”
Stunning sample book demonstrates range of printing and finishing capabilities To introduce atelier properly to brand owners, converters, finishers, design agencies and the media, Sappi Europe has designed and produced a stunning sample book with the theme “brilliance meets function.” “We wanted something entirely unique that appeals to the emotions representing the innovation that went into the development of atelier and the new opportunities it offers to the packaging market,” adds Scheidweiler. “We chose as artwork a design that produces

industry top value of around 92%. On the reverse side, atelier offers a brightness factor of 98% to accommodate the increasing demand for printing on both sides of the board for added impact.
a truly unique image on each page, much like each snowflake that nature produces is different. Each page of the sample book presents different artwork with diverse finishing techniques applied, to visually demonstrate the magnitude of possibilities this remarkable new product brings to the folding box board market.”
Extensive market research Prior to developing atelier, Sappi Europe performed extensive market research, identifying the top folding box boards from leading European suppliers. “At a minimum, we wanted to be in line in terms of the physical properties, including rigidity, bulk and strength, while going beyond today’s known visual properties. At the same time we aimed at bringing tangible and purely unique characteristics to folding box board that would clearly set us apart in the marketplace”, Scheidweiler explains. With a brightness level of 99% on the top side, atelier clearly exceeds the market standard in brightness compared to a current
“We chose the name atelier to differentiate this product from Algro Design and to reflect the convergence of ideas and craftsmanship that is represented by this exciting new product,” Lars Scheidweiler comments. “In addition, our Maastricht mill provides a central manufacturing location that allows us to quickly reach every European location. Fast delivery combined with breakthrough physical and visual properties clearly places atelier in a position to rapidly gain market share in a highly competitive market.” Sappi is a global company headquartered in Johannesburg, South Africa, with over 13,500 employees and manufacturing operations on three continents in seven countries, sales offices in 50 countries, and customers in over 100 countries around the world.

Hand Drying machines vs Single Use Towels Study suggests single use towels are the most hygienic way to dry hands New research by the University of Westminster, commissioned by ETS, the European Tissue Symposium, suggests that single use towels are the most hygienic way to dry hands after visiting the washroom. Despite a trend for sophisticated drying machines in recent years it appears that traditional single use towels offer an unsurpassed level of hygiene when drying hands after visiting the washroom. The study was undertaken by leading microbiologist Keith Redway and looked at the potential for microbial contamination from hand drying and the potential risks for the spread of microbes in the air, particularly if hands are not washed properly. The research used four different hand drying methods and three different test models to compare differences between the drying methods and their capacity to spread microbes from the hands of users potentially to other people in public washrooms.
Thorough examination Paper towels, a textile roller towel, a warm air dryer and a jet air dryer were compared using three different test models: acid indicator using lemon juice, yeast, and bacterial transmission from hands when washed without soap. The University of Westminster scientists found that the jet air dryer spread liquid from users’ hands further and over a greater distance – up to 1.5m – than the other drying methods. They also recorded the greatest spread of microbes into the air at both near and far distances for each of the tested models. Levels recorded at close distance for a jet air dryer revealed an average of 59.5 colonies of yeast compared with an average of just 2.2colonies for paper towels. At a distance of 0.2m the jet air dryer recorded 67 colonies of yeast compared with only6.5 for paper towels. At a distance of 1.5 m the jet air dryer recorded 11.5 colonies of yeast compared to zero for paper towels.
Spread of microbes affecting adults and children The peer-reviewed study, published in the March 2015 edition of the ‘Journal of Hospital Infection’, also looked at the body height at which microbes were spread by air dryers. It found the greatest dispersal was at 0.6 –
0.9 m from the floor. This is worrying since it equates to the face height of small children who might be standing near the dryer when a parent is drying his or her hands. This suggests that parents should take care to keep children away from the direct air stream of jet air dryers in washrooms to ensure that they are not unintentionally contaminating youngsters. “These findings clearly indicate that singleuse towels spread the fewest microbes of all hand-drying methods,” said Keith Redway. “Cross contamination in public washrooms is a legitimate public health concern. The extent to which jet air dryers disperse microbes into the washroom environment is likely to have implications for policy guidance to facilities managers operating in a wide range of environments from sports venues and airports through to schools and hospitals.”
Hand drying a crucial component of hand hygiene “Correct hand drying is crucial in completing the hand washing process and reducing the risk of microbe transmission,“commented Roberto Berardi, Chairman of the European Tissue Symposium (ETS).“This latest University of Westminster research builds on previous studies such as last year’s research by the University of Leeds. Its findings add to the existing body of evidence demonstrating that hand drying using single-
use towels is associated with lower numbers of microbes both on the hands and in the washroom environment than with warm air or jet air dryers.”
Key findings •
•
Due to their air flow, electric hand dryers show a greater potential for the dispersal of microbial contamination on the hands at different heights and to greater distances than towels; a jet air dryer showing the greatest potential. The visualization of the air flow from a jet air dryer helps explain the results of this study. Claimed air speeds for jet air dryers of over 600 kph are likely to increase the risk of transmission of viruses and other microbes from the hands of users to other occupants of public washrooms and into the washroom environment.

European conference on the future of business education in packaging Innovation in business education and job qualification needed to prevent EU industry skills gap in packaging Novel methods of business education and a better, internationally comparable description of the job qualifications in packaging are needed to prevent a skills gap in the European industry. These were the main conclusions of a unique European conference dedicated to the future of business education in packaging, which took place on April 23rd 2015 in Enschede, The Netherlands. This conference, the 1st European Conference on the Future of Business Education in Packaging, was organised by NVC Netherlands Packaging Centre, the association of companies addressing the activity of packaging throughout the supply chain of packaged products. The NVC membership, projects, information services and education programme stimulate the continuous improvement of packaging. Keynote speaker of the conference was prof.dr. Filip Dochy (Leuven University, Belgium). He stressed the importance of life long learning for
the European workforce and provided an overview of the global developments. The workforce is ageing, retirement ages are going up to 67 and higher and technology is moving forward. Only continuous education and training can prevent a skills gap which would seriously hamper the competitiveness of individual companies and the potential for industry and retail in Europe to innovate on behalf of the society in general. Conference chairman Michael Nieuwesteeg (NVC Netherlands Packaging Centre) highlighted the importance of well-defined and internationally comparable packaging related job qualifications. In the vision of NVC, these are the starting point for the development of the appropriate examination procedures as well as the most applicable training and education programmes. He agreed with prof. Dochy that the result of the training programme in terms of learning outcomes should be the goal and that the methods used (online, classroom, blended,
company visits, joined assignments, etc.) are instrumental to achieving these goals. Nieuwesteeg referenced the European Qualifications Framework EQF which was used to develop the successful European NVC Course Programmes in Packaging I and II (EQF5 and EQF6, respectively). Four main aspects of business education in packaging were subsequently discussed in-depth in four different Round Table Discussions, addressing the career development of the qualified packaging professionals, the difference between educating the workforce (aged 25-67) and students (aged 18-24), the many different positions in the organisation where packaging knowledge is required and the international harmonisation of the job qualifications. Preparations have started for the 1st Global Conference on the Future of Business Education in Packaging, which is scheduled to take place on Sunday May 7th, 2017 in Dusseldorf (Germany), during packaging exhibition interpack.
Radware launches new Hybrid Cloud WAF Service Radware, provider of cyber security and application delivery solutions ensuring optimal service level for applications in virtual, cloud and software defined data centres, has recently released a new and fully-managed, cloud-based Web Application Firewall (WAF) service that provides unmatched protection from web-based cyber-attacks. Cyber-attacks remain a persistent threat and have become sophisticated in size and scope. Denial of Service (DoS), SQL injections and cross-site scripting are the most common web attack vectors, increasing in popularity. As migration to the cloud continues and expands, companies today are facing a more distributed network infrastructure. This transition of web based applications to the cloud have rendered onpremise mitigation tools ineffective against web attacks and require organisations to protect their applications both on-premise and in-the-cloud. Radware’s new Hybrid Cloud WAF Service is an industry first that provides a fully managed enterprise grade WAF that protects both

on-premise and cloud-based applications, using a single technology solution. Unlike existing WAF solutions that integrate dual technologies, which results in a gap between protection coverage and quality, Radware’s single technology approach makes migrating applications to the cloud safer and secure.
web attacks, Radware’s Hybrid Cloud WAF can also defend and mitigate a wide range of DDoS attacks through its alwayson DDoS attack protection, and provide comprehensive detection and mitigation of attacks with minimal false positives and no impact on legitimate traffic.
“It’s not uncommon for enterprises to distribute their applications both on-premise and in-the-cloud. In addition, we see enterprises employ multiple cloud vendors to host various aspects of their infrastructure. However, having a disparate network infrastructure adds a level of complexity when trying to protect your web applications,” says Carl Herberger, vice president of security solutions for Radware. “We have taken actionable steps to provide enterprise with a unified hybrid solution against web-based attacks regardless if protection is needed on-premise or in the cloud and provide better security when moving applications to the cloud as well as ease of security policy orchestration and automation.”
“When there is no technical integration between on-premise and cloud WAF technologies, organisations are faced with poor quality of detection resulting in poor mitigation options,” says Jon Oltsik, senior principal analyst, Enterprise Strategy Group. “Radware’s Hybrid Cloud WAF Service can help bridge this gap by integrating its on-premise devices and WAF technologies with cloud-based coverage to deliver a comprehensive detection and mitigation solution.”
In addition to protection from various
The Hybrid Cloud WAF Service also provides full coverage from all of OWASP’s Top 10 security risks and is backed by Radware’s Emergency Response Team – a dedicated group of security experts that can actively monitor and mitigate attacks in real time.

LED technology was a key feature in EFI’s exhibit at the expo. With more than 500 LED inkjet printers installed at locations worldwide, EFI is leading the charge in the significant advantages of higher-quality, versatile imaging on broader range of substrates – with virtually no VOC emissions and significantly reduced energy usage. EFI customers are gaining a competitive advantage from their ability to print on
thin, inexpensive films, corrugated board and other materials that cannot withstand the heat associated with other drying or curing methods. One LED inkjet technology user, the Sir Speedy printing franchise in Raleigh, N.C., expanded the range of products it sells to new and existing clients with a 65-inch EFI H1625 LED hybrid roll/ flatbed printer. The printer’s flatbed capabilities have eliminated a good amount of outsourcing the business once did, opening the door to moreprofitable selling opportunities on jobs printed on brushed metal and other specialty substrates. The printer, which was on display in EFI’s booth and in the booth for print technology dealer Nazdar SourceOne, was an entry-level product offering high-quality, eight-level grayscale imaging and superior white ink capabilities at an affordable price. “Our sales team has really embraced new capabilities with this printer,” according to Sir Speedy Raleigh’s owner, Lloyd Newton. “It uses much less power than traditional UV curing, and it takes many of the variables out of the printing process.”
Other LED printers on display at the expo included: •
The EFI VUTEk® GS2000LX Pro with

•
UltraDrop™ Technology, a 2-meter hybrid printer with eight colors plus white that delivers exceptional quality, including crisp four-point type and vibrant color, thanks to high-end capabilities of its variabledrop, grayscale 7-picoliter UltraDrop printheads. The 3.2-meter EFI VUTEk GS3250LXr Pro, a dedicated roll-to-roll printer that extends LED UV imaging into the fleet and vehicle wrap, textile soft signage and specialty out-of-home markets with advanced SuperFlex Inks from EFI and 3M.
EFI’s exhibit also included the award-winning flagship of the EFI VUTEk portfolio, the 3.2-meter, hybrid EFI VUTEk HS100 Pro press, a high-volume, analog replacement solution that uses a combination LED/UV pin and cure imaging process to provide exceptional quality and high productivity. The press also features automated material loading and unloading systems, along with a material edge guide system for printing corrugated board and other challenging substrates at press rated-speeds. The 2-meter, hybrid EFI VUTEk H2000 Pro UV inkjet printer on display featured UltraDrop Technology. It gives users a more-affordable entry point into mid-volume, premium production printing while giving them the option to add features – including white ink, clear varnish and roll-to-roll media handling – as they grow their business. Show attendees also saw unique, predecorated inkjet-printed sheets created with an EFI VUTEk GS Pro-TF series printer and thermoformed in the booth, as well as cost-effective, label and narrow-web inkjet converted applications printed with an EFI Jetrion® digital inkjet press.
Furious speed: EFI Fiery proServer is seven times faster
The Fiery proServer also touts enhanced integration into the EFI Productivity Suite of web-to-print and MIS/ERP products. Those advanced software offerings give signage and graphics professionals the important additional advantages of streamlined, efficient production and administration of everything from templated, online design and job submission to estimating, scheduling, production, shipping/fulfillment and accounting.
More power in web-to-print with enhanced Digital StoreFront software On the web-to-print end of the workflow, the International Sign Expo featured the debut of the newest version of EFI Digital StoreFront® software. Available now, this advanced software platform provides top class print buyer experience, including new, EFI DirectSmile options that extend the types of variable-data and personalized print and electronic campaigns that corporations can successfully create online. Printing companies can profitably produce more work using the industry’s top online job submission solution integrated with a complete Productivity Suite, which offers real-time, bi-directional integration and data sharing with EFI MIS/ERP and EFI Fiery digital print workflows.
Print buyers for larger corporate enterprises gain more flexibility and capability with the web-to-print software’s new Enterprise Model, a useful feature that allows a print provider to subdivide a single Digital StoreFront license into different interfaces serving franchises or subsidiaries of a parent organization. Print buyers also gain moreconvenient, one-stop-shopping for a range of services using a new marketplace sales offering that can incorporate content partners such as copywriters, photographers and graphic designers in a single online ordering interface — all important features that print providers can offer to their clients to give value beyond just print. “Our customers are fueling their success by reducing costs, expanding throughput and developing profitable, new product offerings,” said Scott Schinlever, senior vice president and general manager, EFI Inkjet Solutions. “LED inkjet technology has been a game changer for many of these companies, but they also have the opportunity to do more with 7-picoliter grayscale UltraDrop imaging and our integrated workflow products. The range of technologies we are showing at the International Sign Expo can make a huge difference for signage and graphics professionals determined to differentiate themselves and grow their businesses.”
The newest-version EFI Fiery® proServer drove VUTEk printers at the show. Its Fiery FAST RIP technology processes complex vector data up to seven times faster than its predecessor. EFI Fiery software for wideand superwide-format printing installed on the proServer offers dynamic smoothing for improved quality, new tiling options for reduced waste, an updated media catalog and online help.

Introducing automation, maximising output at FESPA 2015 Enfocus will highlight how prepress and workflow solutions can improve operations for large format printers. Enfocus will be exhibiting at FESPA 2015, the world’s largest event for large format, digital, screen and textile print technology taking place 18-22 May 2015 in Cologne, Germany. At its booth, the company will demonstrate how Enfocus solutions reduce errors, improve productivity, and provide large format printers with a pathway for growing their business. There are significant challenges that come from being a large format printer. The cost of materials, combined with the large amount of manual labour needed to produce a very small print run means there is no room for mistakes. Redoing a job is often just as expensive and time consuming as producing it the first time, negatively impacting the printer’s profitability and customer satisfaction.
“Enfocus provides those tools, giving printers the resources to create reliable, hassle-free prepress and workflow solutions that relieve many of their operating pressures. At FESPA 2015, our goal is to educate printers on how our products can transform their business.” - Bjorn Willems

Small mistakes, big problems – no more With so much at stake, it is critical for large format printers to improve their processes and ensure that small mistakes don’t become big problems. This
means that files that get submitted for production need to be right the first time, and every time. During the five-day FESPA event, Enfocus will be educating large format printers on how to achieve this level of accuracy. Enfocus will show how their solutions – which have long been used by commercial printers – can enable large format printers to overcome their own sets of challenges and achieve success. Large format printers will have the possibility to calculate the fast ROI they will obtain by using Enfocus’ solutions. Enfocus will be demonstrating their industry leading solutions: PitStop, Switch, and Connect. These solutions can be used separately or together, allowing users to choose the features that best meet their needs today, and expand their solutions as their business grows in the future.
PitStop 13 - PDF Quality Control just got better After a successful beta test period, PitStop 13 is now in general release. Beta users report that the features included in this release solve their most problematic PDF quality challenges. Available as a subscription or a license model, PitStop 13 provides, as one beta tester described it, “More production, more efficiency, and easier communication.” Printers all over the world experience the challenges that come with modern print production. PDFs have become the common format for the delivery of files, but these PDF files can often include issues that mean extra, non-chargeable work and time for the printers and increased frustration for customers. With the release of PitStop 13, Enfocus gives printers the features they need to take control of the production process. As part of this product release, Enfocus has created a series of videos that provide a first-hand look at the powerful features of PitStop13 in action. These videos contain an overview of what’s included in PitStop Pro and Pitstop Server, and videos that cover the new functionality included in the following features. • Add Bleed Action to address one of the biggest challenges in the industry: the lack of bleed in supplied PDF files.

Customers can customize Preflight warning messages and even translate into languages that are not currently supported by PitStop. Preflight Restrictions gives users endless options for customizing the checks and fixes included in a preflight profile eliminating irrelevant warnings and errors. PDF2IMAGE in PitStop Server CLI gives users more options for creating and managing images (PNG or JPEG) from PDF files. The PitStop Pro “floating” license provides the flexibility of installing copies of PitStop Pro on any number of terminals within a local area network and allowing only a certain number of these copies to be used simultaneously. PitStop 13 is compatible with Adobe Acrobat X, XI and DC.
PitStop Pro 13 is available on either a license or subscription basis. Users can choose the model that works best, and upgrade in the future. PitStop 13 will be one of the products on demonstration at the Enfocus booth at FESPA 2015.

Optimal, profitable output generating more business Enfocus solutions fix any incoming document so that it outputs like intended on any press, machine or substrate. This minimizes manual pre-print actions while drastically improving turnaround time per job. These improved processes and faster turnaround times mean smaller printers can service more customers each day. For bigger companies in the large format market, solutions from Enfocus can minimise manual intervention and maximise the daily output. Printers are able to automate repetitive tasks, and can automatically analyse incoming jobs and recommend the best-suited machine for the job. These
features combined make any large format business more scalable and able to grow. Bjorn Willems, Director of Product Management at Enfocus, says: “The universe of print continues to evolve, and large format printers need new tools to make the most out of the opportunities this evolution promises. Enfocus provides those tools, giving printers the resources to create reliable, hassle-free prepress and workflow solutions that relieve many of their operating pressures. At FESPA 2015, our goal is to educate printers on how our products can transform their business by freeing up valuable time, improving output, and generating a guaranteed return on investment.”
With the setting of FESPA 2015 taking place in Cologne, Germany, it is a home game for Impressed, the Enfocus distributor for the DACH region. Impressed and its team will therefore staff the Enfocus booth P80 and assist in demonstrating the benefits of the Enfocus solutions to the large format digital, screen and textile print FESPA audience. Martin Werder, owner of Impressed, concludes: “We see a lot of potential for the Enfocus solutions to help large format printers streamline their automation processes, freeing up valuable prepress time to haul in more orders. Our teams are ready to demonstrate on hand and on site just how much time, energy and money can be saved by automating.”
