SPEND TODAY TO SAVE TOMORROW. Investing in the ECOLINE now is like having a long term saving plan for the future. The reasons are comprehensive: 

The minimum floor space, is a saving bonanza with today’s spiraling property costs.

The height of 2.6 mtrs and compactness, allows for operation on a single level, providing a complete saving on manpower.

The press is equipped with many standard features that are considered “upgrades” on other presses.

Shorter web leads between printing provides better print quality, improved colour registration and low waste.

Depending on requirements, other aggregates & features can be offered to meet specific production demands.

Autoprint Repetto 65 V2 A ‘Value for Money’ investment for R.T.Graphics & ‘a peace of mind’ for Manak Packaging of Indore

Started in 1996 as a design house, R.T.Graphics entered into print production in 2002 and is today a leading packaging print shop in Indore. Managed by Mr.Mukesh Tanwani and Mr.Ravi Tanwani, with their USP of ‘Creative Packaging’, their growth has been on the upside. “Before investing in Autoprint Repetto 65 V2, we had converted our two colour offset machines for applications like UV coating and Metpet printing, and six months back we installed our third press. Our present infrastructure includes complete range of machines starting from packaging designing to final delivery of the printed material. We handle all operations under one roof except CtP which we are planning to set up in house very soon,” says Mukesh.

Autoprint Repetto 65 V2 Die Punching machine - “Good machine, good service, good performance. In simple terms, peace of mind.” – Konark, Manak Packaging

Key Notes : > R.T.Graphics finds Autoprint Repetto 65 V2 a viable and economical option for Automatic Die punching. > A small foot print, ease of operation, accurate production, and excellent service made Repetto a winner. > Manak meets size, automation and speed requirements with Autoprint Repetto 65 V2.

Catering to the requirements of several industries, R.T. Graphics are Manufacturer and Supplier of Packaging Boxes, Printed Bags, Labels, Promotional Products and Stationery Items and are the leading Paperboard Packaging Supplier in Central India. They cater to various FMCG, Food, confectionery, pharmaceutical and garment segments for their packaging requirements including mono cartons, e flute cartons and labels. “The Autoprint Repetto 65 V2 was a viable and economical option for Automatic Die punching, instead of going for imported used machines. Its compact size, speed and accuracy enabled us to

improve our quality and delivery time. It is ‘Value for Money’ and met all our expectations,” says Mr.Mukesh Tanwani of R.T.Graphics, Indore. “As we grew we wanted to improve our performance both in terms of print quality and faster delivery. We wanted to convert our conventional die punching process to an automated process. We had very limited option - either to go for used imported machines or select one of the few indigenously manufactured machines and we decided on the Autoprint Repetto 65V2. Considerable improvement in print quality combined with faster processing of the print job made us decide on the Autoprint Repetto 65 V2 Die Punching Machine. More over we were planning to convert our regular sheets of size ranging from 15” x 20” to 18” x 25”, Autoprint Repetto suited us very well to cover this size gamut. This apart, it’s very small foot print which uses very less space of the print shop, made it a winner,” explains Mukesh. “Autoprint helps us to convert our jobs very fast. As one Autoprint die punching machine releases almost three conventionally handled punching machines, there is considerable increase in productivity with minimum labour input and resultant savings in cost. Autoprint complements our needs with their speed and quality,” he continues.

pressideas/ commercial printing

With the installation of the Autoprint Repetto it’s a win-win situation for R.T. Graphics – their customers are happy, they have now faster deliveries and consequently waiting time for the printed job is less; delivery is ‘on time every time’. “This is the first time we have invested in an Autoprint product. For us, the Repetto with its small foot print, ease of operation, accurate production, backed by excellent trained service professionals makes us comfortable in the market place to compete and serve our customers better,” he adds. “Our experience with the Repetto has been excellent. Our investment in this machine is ‘Value for Money’,” Mukesh concludes.

Manak Packaging chose Autoprint Repetto 65 V2 for size, automation and speed Manak Packaging, Indore, a carton manufacturing company for the past 20 years, was started by the father of Mr.Konark, the present Director of the company, and his uncle. Mostly doing job work initially, they started printing carton boxes for FMCG products when Konark joined along with his cousin. “My father and uncle started with one printing and one punching machine and we now have four printing machines and four punching machines – one Autoprint machine and one pasting machine. We plan to expand more in the coming years by installing a new pasting machine, with lock bottom facility and planning to upgrade our printing machine,” says Konark. “Presently we cater to the FMCG, Confectionary, Masala and Agarbhathi customers. With the installation of the Autoprint Die Punching machine, which has enabled us to speed up our delivery to our customers, we are planning to enter the Pharmaceuticals and Readymade industry segments,” he adds. Recently they have installed an Autoprint Repetto 65 V2 Die Punching machine. “We

are mainly catering to the FMCG segment and the die punching machine is of the exact size as our jobs, and the floor area required by the machine is very less. It can replace up to three manual punching machines which reduces our labour cost and increases the speed of our working with accuracy. We chose Autoprint Repetto 65 V2 for its size, automation and speed,” explains Konark. According to him, the cost of the machine is very affordable and its size is an added plus point. The machine takes up less space and has higher output. “It can do what three manual punching machines can do in one day. It has helped us reduce our costs. It is simple to operate, very user friendly and we also get good service support. The machine

April 2016

“We have not used this machine before, but after using this machine we are planning to purchase two more Autoprint machines,” he concludes. Their experience with Autoprint so far has been excellent and they are fully satisfied with Autoprint’s product and service support. Konark sums up Autoprint experience as being “Excellent with great service and quick response”.

OPA protests against price hike The members of Offset Printers’ Association (OPA) took-out a procession on 1st May, 2016 to protest against the increase in prices of kraft paper and duplex board. According to Kushl Kumar Jain, Sr. Vice President of the Association, “There has been a constant increase in the prices of duplex board and kraft paper during the past 2/3 months.” The prices have increased from 2 to 3 rupees per kg in the past couple of months. The printers are already bearing the brunt of recent increase in prices of other raw materials, petroleum products and costs of labour. “It is practically impossible to withstand the increasing costs. Therefore we have decided to increase our rates by 15 per cent w.e.f. 1st of May,” he states. Mr. Amarjit Singh Mancoo, Vice President OPA said, “The price increase by the paper mills/dealers have been bringing huge loss for printers as they are bound to supply as per earlier committed prices. Since raw material is now available at higher price, selling at earlier committed prices is making each passing day harder for printers.” Mr. Manoj Verma, Vice President said “The prices of the paper and paper board are increased by the paper mills without any prior information. Since the orders for corrugated and duplex boxes are booked 3 to 4 months

10

has met all our expectations. The benefits to our customers are faster delivery of items, accurate punching and better quality of the printed product. So it is beneficial both to us as well as our customers,” praises Konark.

in advance, the increase in price have put the printers in awkward position. The situation has deteriorated in the last three months,” adds Vice President Manoj Verma. The members closed their shutters for two days on 4th and 5th May and say that they may go on an indefinite strike if their demands are not met. Non availability of skilled work force, market slump, tax-free zones in neighbouring states and import of Chinese goods are further adding to the woes of the Printing and Packaging industry of the region. In the general body meeting of the association, it was noted that paper being an essential commodity, the government should come to the rescue of the industry and check any undue increase in prices of paper and paperboard. The association has at least 3 month prior intimation before any price increase, abolishing of import duty on paper and proper labelling of paper stock and subsidy on raw material as their key demands.

Sree Vinayaga Screens installs Heidelberg Speedmaster SM52 Anicolor Press with Coater With minimum wastage and reduced setup times, Anicolor is the perfect solution for Ramanathan, MD, Sree Vinayaga Screens, Madurai Madurai-based Sree Vinayaga Screens constantly reinvents itself, by investing in the latest and best-in-class technologies to meet the stringent quality requirements of an ever-evolving print landscape. In keeping with this objective, the print shop recently added Heidelberg Speedmaster SM52 Anilcolor press with coater to its print infrastructure, complementing a present suite of press and finishing equipments. “Quality excellence is an unspoken promise to the customer. To stay true to that commitment, we need the best equipments we can trust. Heidelberg’s Speedmaster SM 52 Anicolor is our latest profitable investment in that direction,” states Ramanathan, Managing Director of Sree Vinayaga Screens. This investment strategy has worked well for the company, which has come a long way from its screen-printing days. Nearly 40 years back in 1977, Mr. Lakshminarayanan founded Sree Vinayaga Screens as a screen-printing unit. Initially, the firm was engaged in screen-printing in the temple city - Madurai, before moving on to the offset phase in the 90’s. Today, it has emerged as a complete, commercial offset print house with the infrastructure necessary to produce a job in-house. “Our initial choice was a regular Heidelberg Speedmaster SM 52 to cater to short-run jobs. But, Heidelberg’s Anilcolor demo at Prakash Offset, Mangalore, altered the equation dramatically, swaying our decision in favour of the SM 52 with Anicolor technology and coater. With minimum wastage and reduced setup times, Anicolor is the perfect solution for jobs. Moreover, it allows us to use conventional printing plates,” Ramanathan says with conviction. Vinayaka Screens, has a print tradition since its inception, Lakshmi Narayanan, founder of the firm, says “We always believe in changing technology, in fact we introduced the first four color offset press in late 80’s in Madurai, when most of offset jobs done with single

and two colour presses. And being a screen printing specialist, I have tried with various medium, and in turn we adapt to various technology today.” Indeed! The Speedmaster SM 52 Anicolor press is suitable also for short-run pint jobs starting from a low of 200 sheets and can print up to a maximum of 5,000 sheets, with an average run of 1,000 sheets. The press, which is capable of producing 15,000 impressions per hour, can handle an array of substrates ranging from 0.03 millimeters to 0.6 millimeters or 0.0012 inches to 0.024 inches. “Offset quality at digital prices. That is Anicolor for you. Exceptionally shorter make-ready times help us stay competitive with digital pricing models. The ROI from an Anicolor press starts right away from the first job,” beams Ramanathan, who is an alumnus of the Pune’s Vidyarthi Griha Printing institute, and started his career as prepress application specialist with a leading print-house at Mumbai, before joining his father’s business. The Anicolor press delivers stable inking, thanks to zoneless short-inking unit with dampening system that ensures exceptional consistency during production runs, uses a chamber doctor blade instead of a conventional roller train. The system applies a metered, amount of ink on every revolution

to maintain the same ink consistency and top notch printing quality for any run length of the job. The temperature of the roller can be regulated in order to make any minor changes in ink densities. Anicolor operates on a 90:50:50 philosophy. Compared to machines with conventional inking units, Anicolor reduces paper wastage by 90%, implying 90% less make-ready sheets. The smart inking system eliminates the need to adjust ink keys to match colours, resulting in 50% shorter make-ready times. The two features combined, serve to enhance productivity by 50% or simply, 5 jobs printed within 35 minutes. Sree Vinayaga Screens profits from a sizable share of walk-in customers, in addition to a prestigious clientele that includes conglomerates like Aurolab, Titan, Bajaj, BigBazaar, Ola Cabs, and top advertising agencies in South Tamil Nadu. And more than 25 periodicals and journals are printed at Vinayaka every month. “The online coating unit also facilitates quick printing and speedy delivery of POS posters, danglers, and flyers to customers. Although we are still in the early innings of adoption, new business is flooding in. Buying the Heidelberg Speedmaster SM 52 with Anicolor and coating unit, has been one of our best business decisions ever,” Ramanathan concludes with a smile.

C.P. Bourg introduces BPM Industry’s first scalable sheet preparation module – for intervention-free booklet making and binding.

C.P. Bourg has introduced the all-new, innovative Bourg Preparation Module (BPM) – a modular, scalable sheet preparation unit that empowers print professionals to use their in-line Bourg binders or booklet makers to produce books and booklets with no operator intervention. BPM works in-line with select digital printers and presses, as well as off-line, or in dual-mode connected to a Bourg Sheet Feeder (BSF), to create perfect bound or stitched books and booklets. The BPM will be displayed live in action at drupa 2016 (booth C61 hall 6). The unique approach of BPM creates a more streamlined workflow. Printers can print on large sheets with multi-up imposition, which optimizes their click charge. Additionally, BPM eliminates or reduces many time-consuming processes, such as preparing media in multiple sizes, manually setting up machines, and trimming finished jobs – all while minimizing human intervention and the risk of human error.

The operator simply loads a single-sized media into the printer/press and completes the process by unloading the finished books or booklets. Everything else is done automatically.

Key Notes : > The new BPM vastly simplifies and automates production of books and booklets > Delivering economies of scale, a streamlined workflow, and shorter turnaround. > Sheets are converted in a single pass, enabling multiple book or booklet formats from media of a single size.

22

April 2016

Perfect for creating different-sized books and booklets BPM is exceptionally versatile and easy-to-use. The operator simply loads a single-sized media into the printer/press and completes the process by unloading the finished books or booklets. Everything else is done automatically. Jobs are converted from very large formats of up to 600 mm x 370 mm (23.6 in x 14.6 in), to very small formats down to 139 mm x 120 mm (5.5 in x 4.7 in) in a single pass. The processed sheets can feed directly from the BPM into a downstream C.P. Bourg BB3202 Perfect Binder or BM-e booklet maker. Offering excellent scalability, a single BPM can be used for 1-up and 2-up jobs, with a second one

added for 4-up jobs. BPM is also modular, as each BPM module can have up to four of the following functions: registration, rotation, creasing, and format changing. Some functions can be repeated for custom applications.

Saves money, time, and space The benefits of BPM are recognized through the entire production workflow, resulting in an endproduct that is more cost-effective to manufacture. Automation reduces the manual workload, while maximizing productivity, minimizing imaging charges and enabling shorter turnaround times. BPM automatically transforms SRA3 input to CD output format, and introduces the potential for significant economies of scale by enabling use of just one paper size for any final book format. With its innovative bleed trimming system, BPM cuts paper top and bottom, symmetrically or asymmetrically, and trim 4-100 mm (0.16-3.94 in) from coated or uncoated sheets, for production of virtually any creative format. For 2-up jobs with an odd number of sheets, BPM automatically separates the last sheet and ejects the unneeded half to the trash. Increased reliability and a full integrity check are achieved with the optional barcode system. For full automation, BPM fully supports the industry-standard JDF and XML workflows. “The capabilities being unveiled with the BPM are an industry game changer,” said Sacha Paolucci, Commercial Director at C.P. Bourg s.a. “With BPM, printers can gain an added edge in speed, profitability, and simplicity, while ensuring first-rate results – virtually hands-free. This works to create a better end-product and increased customer satisfaction.”

iC3D v4 to run live at drupa Creative Edge Software reaches out to packaging designers at drupa 2016 with new photorealistic 3D technology Creative Edge Software, developer of the award-winning iC3D packaging design software, announces significant new packaging design capabilities with the release of its iC3D version 4 software. Incorporating a number of new features for unprecedented 3D photorealism, v4 has been developed using customer insight into the must-have elements for a game-changing packaging design capability. “Our research with key CPG brands, creative agencies, designers and prepress professionals highlighted difficulties due to the generally fragmented approach to software for packaging ideation, design and production,” Nick Gilmore, CEO of Creative Edge Software. “As well as causing delays and unnecessary cost, it also hampers creativity as a whole, as designers try to second guess possible pitfalls or practical issues before the design goes too far. In

iC3D, we have addressed those concerns with an updated, powerful, all-in-one, 3D packaging design application able to create on-screen 3D mockups at any stage in the design process.” “True photorealism was previously the missing piece of the puzzle,” explains Gilmore. “iC3D has reduced time-to-market for brands from months down to days, but for full creative acceptance we needed to nail all aspects of the 3D representation in all environments.” With iC3D v4, five new features have been developed specifically to address this concern: Ray Tracing; 3D Model Interiors; Light Map Editor; Dynamic Backgrounds; and Perspective Control. These new features allow accurate simulation of a wide range of optical and visual effects.

Flint Group at drupa: Let’s colour the world together Building on drupa’s vision, Flint Group will demonstrate its “One team, One Future, One Flint Group” concept with a vast range of inks, coatings, pressroom chemicals, flexographic plates and equipment, mounting sleeves, printing blankets and print services and solutions. And now, with the establishment of the Digital Printing Solutions Division, Flint Group’s presence at drupa will be bigger and more visible than ever before. Flint Group will have 3 distinct spaces at the exhibition: Hall 3 in the South of the fairground will be home to a small Flint Group information booth, which is situated in the heart of the ink and print consumables suppliers’ area. Ideally positioned to catch passing visitors looking for alternative print consumable partners as well as a meeting hub for our existing customers and dealers.

24

April 2016

Hall 8b in the Northern sector of the show will house a 245m2 Flint Group prepress stand. This stand will be shared between the Flint Group Flexographic Products Division and Thermoflex, who joined us with Xeikon, and is part of the new Digital Printing Solutions Division. With this joint booth the commonalities in the prepress area will be presented to the visitors. Hall 8a is the location of its main 1,200m2 stand. Joint branding of Flint Group and Xeikon will clearly highlight the exciting pairing of Flint Group and Xeikon. In addition, Flint Group will have its popular Schrebergarten, every day except on 10th June during the show. This informal space will be just outside the official exhibition site and will provide a wonderful place to relax before moving on to the restaurants and bars of the Altstadt.

Using Ray Tracing technology, glass and liquids in particular look 100 percent realistic for transparency, translucence, colour, refractive index, reflections and shadows. With this latest development, iC3D tightens the creative lifecycle further by replacing the need for professional photography for marketing or promotional materials; packaging designs can be created from scratch and then immediately printed as true photographic image content on boxes, advertisements, posters, web sites and proofed or printed on leading 3D printers. According to Gilmore, luxury brands and creative agencies want image perfection: “With each software version we have finetuned practical aspects such as the range of applications, product types and shapes. Now with unprecedented photorealism too, the missing piece is in place to leverage the full capabilities of this technology – and drupa is the ideal place. We will be showing iC3D v4 running live in the drupa innovation park, Hall 7 booth C16.” There are additional key features which include: All-in-one design software; Direct link to Illustrator; 3D model creation; SmartShrink; In-store visualization; and Proof and share. iC3D is used for packaging designs in luxury, beverages, food, cosmetics, body and other markets across a range of production methods and applications, including cartons, labels and flexibles for bottles, shrink sleeves/wraps, and POS/POP. The unique capabilities of iC3D allow on-the-fly, realtime, photo realistic generation of 3D digital mockups on multiple objects, including custom-designed shapes. For brand owners, retailers, agencies and designers iC3D dramatically reduces time to market and overall costs, while actively enhancing and facilitating a collaborative creative process with their unique 3D cloud share opsis.

Paper conditioning through remoistening in digital printing No printing without WEKO! This textbook statement applies also to digital printing.

Whether digital or conventional, many printing processes require drying processes. If the printing carrier is paper, it loses its original properties through drying. Electrostatic charges, waviness, paper curl or the break at the fold are effects that apparently belong to the daily work routine of a digital printer today. Why does paper react so sensitively to physical impact? Are effective countermeasures available to maintain productivity and quality? These are questions Weitmann & Konrad (WEKO) has asked themselves. The experts from the Stuttgart area have specialised in the development and production of minimum application systems for moistening and powder-spraying of surfaces for over 60 years. The owner-managed company positions its products between printing and further processing thus bridging the gap between these two processing operations.

Paper conditioning through remoistening of the paper is an important step towards high-quality printing products. The visitors or this year’s drupa will see machine manufacturers presenting printing lines equipped with WEKO DigiCon conditioning unit.

Key Notes : > The problems of paper curling, breaking, waving etc. due to drying in printing. > Non-contact remoistening through proven WEKO technology. > WEKO DigiCon for restoration of paper moisture withdrawn in drying.

April 2016

The latest development – the WEKO DigiCon – will be presented at the drupa 2016; it was developed for high-performance inkjet printing systems and restores the moisture withdrawn in the drying process to the paper. But why does this have such a positive effect on the quality of the finished product?

standardised and its behaviour during diverse processing operations can never be completely anticipated, because paper essentially consists of plant fibres. They expand up to 25 per cent when absorbing moisture. In the same way, fibres shrink under the effect of heat when loosing moisture. Depending on the composition and manufacturing process, each paper has a defined moisture. Paper reacts to climate changes during printing and processing with changes of its properties, with dimensional fluctuations and paper curl.

Challenges for digital printing Digital printing presses today work primarily either with toner-based electro-photography or highperformance inkjet technology. With both methods the print web runs through a process – fixing the toner or drying of the ink – where high temperatures act on the paper. The original moisture is lost then. Only 15 to 20 per cent residual moisture remain in the paper. The fibres shrink and the generally known and undesirable effects occur: Paper curl (the paper curls), waviness and electrostatic charges are the effects that significantly affect any kind of further processing and cause a quality reduction of the end product. In addition, the paper becomes brittle and breaks at the fold.

extremely effective measure of restoring the paper’s original properties. The latest development of the WEKO experts – the WEKO DigiCon – are based on the WEKO RFDi conditioning unit for high-performance printing systems working with toner, proven for quite some time. The WEKO DigiCon is designed for the needs of highperformance inkjet printing systems and has been developed in close cooperation with the renowned digital printing machine manufacturers.

Non-contact remoistening through proven WEKO technology The special spray discs (rotors) are the core of these minimum application systems. They turn at a high speed generating a uniform stream of finest micro-droplets. Adjustable sliders regulate spray fans which border on each other seamlessly. In this manner, the WEKO DigiCon conditions the processed paper with an exactly metered liquid supply. It receives its original (positive) properties back and optimises running and stacking properties. The result are production runs free from malfunctions, less paper waste and markedly increased product quality. “Paper conditioning through remoistening of the paper is an important step towards high-quality printing products”, explains Thomas Laissle, product manager at WEKO. “Because of the printing process, this technology is especially appreciated for pages with high ink application and paperbacks,” continues Laissle. The visitors or this year’s drupa can see for themselves in detail. Numerous machine manufacturers

will present printing lines at their booths equipped with the WEKO DigiCon conditioning unit. Furthermore, the WEKO experts provide consultation directly at their booth (hall 2 stand 2B54) under the motto “DON’T PLAY – WORK WITH PRECISION”.

Integration in all common printing lines “The different installations also demonstrate how easily the unit can be integrated into all common printing lines and the advantages resulting from the application. The proven technology also requires very little maintenance and is highly energyefficient. This makes it an economically and ecologically useful investment,” emphasises Marcel Konrad, managing partner at WEKO.

New requirements through further development of printing presses In addition to the development of the WEKO DigiCon the WEKO WebCon for the HP T-series was developed in parallel in close cooperation with the digital printing machine manufacturer HP. This conditioning unit specifically follows the evolution of the HP high-performance endless printing systems in regard to high speed, high colour resolution and a wide range of papers and grammages. These attributes demand maximum flexibility and quantity variability of the conditioning unit. Again, the WEKO experts have outperformed themselves and can now cover the entire requirements profile of HP with the WEKO WebCon through innovative developments and without adaptations of system configurations.

BIGPRINTER, a manufacturer of flatbed UV printers and flatbed cutting equipment, are exhibitors at drupa (booth 5B23 Hall 5), where it will demonstrate its latest UV flatbed printer BIGJET UV2031iPS and the flatbed cutter BIGZEE Cutter 1016. Both machines will work as one Print & Cut center, where the UV machine will produce prints on different signage materials and the cutter will cut them following the print as one system. “Our true UV flatbed printer can print at a resolution up to 1440x1440 dpi, and with moving accuracy we are looking for up to 1 micron. These give us the possibility to produce solid colours without banding and readable text with 2 point size,” said Arkadiy Agamirov, General Manager of BIGPRINTER. “We have conducted many comparison tests during the last 6 years of our printers compared with the most popular Chinese, Korean, Japanese and European brands, and when we print the same images on the same material, our print quality consistently looks better, with correct colours and faster speed. We are always happy to show these results to our clients.” BIGPRINTER was founded in 2002 and in 2009 launched their first UV printers. The model BIGJET UV2031iPS is the fourth generation of their UV printers. At drupa they will display their latest technologies and provide all necessary examples how customers from different markets use their UV printers for their industrial needs. The 3 different models available are: SM (standard), PM (professional) and iPS (professional high-quality and high-speed model).

Meech: Freeing paper from converting problems Delivering web cleaning systems and electrostatic charge control technologies for paper converting.

The non-contact web cleaner CyClean is capable of removing efficiently the smallest particles from a size of 0,4 μm, by applying modern fluid dynamic technologies. The web passes through a doublesided cleaning head, which supplies blowing and sucking airflows without touching it directly.

Key Notes : > The most common web cleaning systems offer direct contact solutions. > Electrostatic control technologies include classic AC and modern DC technologies. > ShearClean provides a high speed powerful cleaning solution.

April 2016

In paper converting an uncontrolled electrostatic charge can arise depending on ambient conditions, composition and guidance of the material, etc. This can lead to, among other types of misbehaviour, operator shocks and attraction of contamination to the material. In addition, a lack of a web cleaning system can cause an improper processing of the paper due to particles and contamination, such as die cutting particles, ambient dust and insects that are on the web. All these problems lead to lower productivity, reduced profit or, in the worst cases, to serious damage to the production lines and possibly even fires.

Web-cleaning and electrostatic control technologies

consumption costs are incurred because the adhesive rolls have to be exchanged and there is a direct contact between paper and the cleaning system, which can have serious consequences for sensitive materials,” he explains. The suction system is commonly used in paper converting and delivers excellent performance even for highly polluted material webs. However, due to the direct contact between the material and the cleaning system, it is not suitable for sensitive materials and is more complex to install.

The available web-cleaning technologies free the material of dry, unbounded particles as the running paper web or paper sheet passes through the cleaning system. The most common systems offered by some manufacturers include an adhesive roller system and a suction system; both systems offer direct contact to the material. In an adhesive roll system, the cleaning rollers take the dirt out of the material and transfer it to the adhesive rolls. However, in a suction system particles are sucked from the material and collected in a filter unit belonging to the system.

The AC static control technology provides a good ionization at short ranges, but compared to the DC ionization, which is also suitable for longer ranges, it is limited in their performance.

On the other hand, electrostatic control technologies include classic AC and modern DC technologies. These systems generate positive and negative ions, which are brought to the electrostatically charged material surface, which is thus neutralized of all charges.

“We have four technologies, which offer right solution

“The proven adhesive roll system provides customers with low investment costs, very good value for money and ease of installation,” says Rushil Shah, Meech Shavo Tech. “However, its efficiency decreases considerably with increasing contamination of the adhesive rolls, by making it less suitable for much polluted material webs. In addition, ongoing

Meech’s contact and non-contact web cleaning systems In addition to the above-mentioned web cleaning systems with direct contact to the web (Meech’s adhesive roll system TakClean and suction system VacClean), Meech has two non-contact systems, the CyClean and the ShearClean.

for different applications and problems. The non-contact web cleaner CyClean is capable of removing efficiently the smallest particles from a size of 0,4 μm, by applying modern fluid dynamic technologies. The web passes through a double-sided cleaning head, which supplies blowing and sucking airflows without touching it directly. The blowing airflow breaks the laminar boundary layer of the incoming web and releases the entrapped contamination. The released particles are captured by the sucking airflows and trapped in the Meech filter unit (AHU). With the fluid dynamic technologies paired with cotton cleaning rollers that do not touch the web, ShearClean provides a powerful cleaning solution to our customers. The cleaning rollers rotate at a very high speed,

whereby the boundary layer of the web is broken, the particles are released and filtered in the AHU,” says Rushil. In the static control portfolio, Meech has AC technology as well as the advanced DC technology. Both these technologies are safe to touch. Meech has a global service network and it provides technical support through its well-trained engineers who have deep understanding of electrostatics and operating principles of web cleaning. Meech provides technical guidance to customers so that they can decide the right product for their specific need.

Meech’s Hyperion range of anti-static bars were prominent at Labelexpo Europe 2015. At the show the company highlighted the ways in which static control technologies can help improve safety and product quality in the labelling market. Visitors could see the complete range of Hyperion static control systems, which comprised 971IPS and 929IPS anti-static bars, in addition to some exciting new additions to the range.

The next line of Meech solutions “The competition in the paper converting industry is driving the manufacturers to use faster machines that are also able to produce high quality products. This means that ionization and web cleaning systems must be able to meet these requirements or even surpass them. Both machine manufacturers and operators require systems that are easier to install, and more powerful devices to cope with the faster machine speeds,” says Rushil. The next line of solutions by Meech will be in line with the changing requirements of customers and market, he concludes.

The difficulty has been that most corrugated presses have limited access to the anilox, typically from the side only, making our standard 3D scanning microscope, AniCAM, unsuitable for that purpose as it would have to measure at 90 degrees from its normal vertical position. “The CorruCAM has been designed to work at up to 120 degrees from the vertical, making it a practical tool for anilox measurement and management in the corrugated press. The CorruCAM will offer the corrugated print industry excellent quality

The second product, the Advanced Inspection Microscope (AIM) can be used with the Advance Gravure Analysis (AVA) and Advance FlexoPlate Analysis (APA) applications. Mr Hall added: “Together, the AIM 2D microscope and its applications will form a natural replacement for the older DOS and Windows 95 ageing microscopes and systems which many gravure engravers and printers are currently using. It is a high speed

“For flexo-plates, the 2D Advance FlexoPlate Analysis (APA) application will give greater in-depth analysis of flexo-plates for dot size, dimensions, relief depth and plate condition analysis. Used alongside the AIM, it will be positioned between the 3D analysis of the AniCAM/FlexoPlate QC and the low cost Plate to Print (P2P) HD unit used for simple mechanical dot analysis on plate or print.” Ahead of Drupa, Troika will launch further improvements to its FlexoPlate QC and Anilox Management System (AMS) for the Anilox QC.

Sandon introduces new Fluid engraving for Anilox In addition to featuring its well established HVP and iProanilox technology, Sandon Global will introduce its new Fluid engraving at the international drupa arena (stand B34 hall 15). Launched at the end of last year, this new Fluid technology consists of a semichannelled engraving that allows an easier yet controlled flow of ink between cells. Fluid is available for bespoke, Flexible Packaging, Corrugated and Narrow Web applications. The robust cell formation of Fluid enables increased line counts, offering enhanced HD print quality and dot control whilst providing vivid HD highlights. Fluid has the advantage of combining vignette and solid print on one plate, in contrast to conventional 60 degree engravings only capable of offering either a high volume or high line count, but not both. The greater print latitude offered by Fluid means anilox inventories can be reduced by increasing

combination which will automate top surface measurement of gravure engravings, helping to eliminate operator error.

line counts and maintaining high volumes of ink thus improving press efficiency by reducing anilox changeovers. The open nature of the cells also facilitates cleaning of the anilox helping to maintain consistency by improving colour matching. The Fluid cell format enables ink to transfer more effectively increasing the lifespan of the anilox by maintaining optical density for longer. This new Fluid cell engraving combines to resolve or eliminate printing issues such as pin-holing, ink spitting, ink starvation and scoring contributing to new levels of consistency, colour and print quality comparable to gravure or offset.

‘Don`t Play – Work With Precision’ with WEKO Weitmann & Konrad, the technology provider of powder spraying systems for offset printing and non-contact remoistening systems for digital printing presents current developments in the area of process optimisation at drupa 2016. Using the motto “Don`t play – work with precision” WEKO presents innovative solutions and concepts at this year’s drupa facilitating process optimisation for the user both in digital printing and sheet-fed offset. “We constantly continue to develop our products – especially in the area of powder spraying for offset printing. Alternative technologies, such as LED UV print – promising to manage without powder – meanwhile press into the market. However, high product quality, frictionless production processes and high processing speeds make an extremely thin, precision-applied powder coat indispensable for further

processing of the printing products. Our passion is to improve good products even further,” explains Marcel Konrad, managing partner of WEKO.... “and this always includes a touch of powder.” The WEKO powder spraying technology is employed worldwide by leading manufacturers of offset printing presses. The current AP series sets high standards for application efficiency, repeat accuracy and cycling of the powder application precisely for each sheet. The WEKO engineers have further improved efficiency with the development of its STEP application technology. With WEKO STEP, the powder is metered exactly to the milligram into an air flow. Cycling only takes place immediately before the sheet. Nearly digital individual sheet cycling is thus possible even at maximum speeds of up to 22,000 sheets/h. The new STEP technology will be presented to the interested technical audience for the

first time at drupa 2016 as developmental study. Minimum and repeatable powder application guarantees the quick, process-optimised further processing for oil-based but also UV applications and reliably prevents offsetting of print sheets as well as glass plate effects. “Modern powder spraying systems combine economy and ecology in a unique manner,” says Konrad.

Pointing towards the recent changes after the new government in India, she perceives that ‘Start up India, Stand up India’ and ‘Make in India’ are positives initiative which encourage youth to explore entrepreneurship and offer niche services and products globally. “The future of printing should be more Digital than other industries,” she expects. “India has been dominating service industry but its potential to establish as manufacturing leader has always been doubted. Now when the Prime Minister has rolled out a red carpet for industrialists to make India a manufacturing hub, it should help boost jobs and growth. Only thing is the plans are properly executed so that the desired results come through,” she suggests.

According to her, Digital is the next change for the printing industry. Today marketing collateral is becoming more personalized and short-run printing is more common. It has to work more automatically than it did earlier. Digital Printing is surely the answer to all these challenges. Targeting to establish a more firm presence in the European markets, Nidhi sees the significant presence of Indian visitors at drupa as a potential platform to make mark in the home market also. “Till now, India printers were not very inclined towards adopting innovative technologies but with their highest participation in drupa as visitors there’s surely room for us to capitalize,” she reasons.

Presently, the western world brings the major part of business for Design’N’Buy. The US is their number one market with highest number of customers in the country. “drupa is a big platform and expectation of both visitors and exhibitors are big. I expect industry to learn and adapt to newest form of tools and technology to create their own niche. Possibilities are immense, only one needs to measure individual capabilities and choose the right investments and growth path. I am sure Drupa is going to enable people to understand the power of 3D printing and impact of green printing on environment at large,” concludes Nidhi.

The strategically located Uflex stall is better suited for showcase of heavy machines and handling heavy equipments. “It is long association with Messe Dussoldorf. They have been very supportive in every aspect,” praises Sunil. “drupa has a beauty of showcasing the latest developments and capable of changing the industry’s future trends. We hope drupa will keep its surprising element this time also,” he adds.

“Digital technology has taken over print over period of time. Today we are using more and more e media instead of traditional media. In times to come this change will further go towards use of more and more digital. But having said that the printing has its own uniqueness and it is critical also. Specially when it comes about packaging the printing is a prime factor. There are lot of positivity in the industry due to recent change in political scenario. Make in India is also one of the prime motivating factors. We hope with the able leadership of the country we will be driving force in time to come,” foresees Sunil. “Our focus has always been towards providing green technology in printing & packaging industry. As a responsible company we have to provide eco-friendly technology to the industry so that its impact on the environment is not harmful,” concludes Sunil. Uflex has been participating in at least 6-7 overseas shows. Around drupa, it will be looking at branding the company and showing its latest technology to the international audience.

business like e-commerce, which depends heavily on the advertisements and marketing. It is greatly benefitting the print industry. drupa cube 2016 Inspiration and innovation in some 60 keynotes, panel discussions and presentations from international experts Boasting some 60 keynote speeches, panel discussions and presentations drupa cube, the event and congress destination at drupa 2016 (stand D03 hall 6) is a-buzz with knowhow, inspiration and innovation. The big difference between drupa cube and other industry congresses around the globe is its focus on visitor target groups from the print industry as well as from the creative sector and from brand manufacturing and print buying. “If you want to master the current changes in the print industry, consistent change management is indispensable. This in turn only works out when you pursue a multi-disciplinary approach and look beyond your own backyard,” says Sabine Geldermann, Director of drupa, underlining the pioneering nature of drupa cube. “With The Medici Group, which is synonymous with “out-of-the-box” thinking, we have exactly the right partner by our side.” We are delighted to announce that Frans Johannsson, founder and CEO of The Medici Group, will be delivering two keynote speeches – the opening keynote on the first trade fair day, 31 May, and a second keynote on 2 June. British brand agency FreemanXP, headquartered in London, was commissioned with the strategic and creative design of the programme and the on-site implementation. The English cube programme for the eleven trade show days is broken down into the following five areas: Keynotes, Business Evolution, Technology, Innovation@the Intersection and C-Level. The six sessions under the heading “Innovation@the Intersection” take a very special approach. In these sessions, covering sector-specific subjects such as “The Role of Large Format”, “The Role of Packaging in the Customer Journey” or “3D Print: Hope or Hype?”, experts from The Medici Group venture a broader view and show how easily innovative approaches from other industries can be transferred to the print industry. The C-Level sessions address a clearly defined circle of participants from executive management level both on the exhibitors’ and visitors’ part. These C-Level sessions immediately follow the four keynotes and are designed as interactive workshops where

strategic insider knowledge is shared. Each keynote speaker will act as a facilitator. Participation is by invitation only.

Six characteristics of Successful Printers Drupa 2016 is on its way & Printers across globe are looking forward to it. A very interesting report recently published by drupa on global trends outlines 2016 Global Trends where printers’ first priority is to expand their sales channel & developing new products. Web-to-Print helps printers to expand their sales channel & product offering to larger audience, which is one of Top 3 Investment Priorities of printer at drupa 2016. Outlines of some of important section of full report is as below.

Capital expenditure plans remain positive Despite or because of the challenging market conditions both printers and suppliers remain committed to good levels of capital expenditure. In market terms, functional leads with a net balance of 41% reporting increased expenditure in the last 12 months, followed closely by packaging at 36% then commercial at 26% and publishing at 19%. It is a similar pattern with respect to plans for next year. Printing technology is the most common priority followed by Finishing and PrePress/Workflow/MIS (53%, 50% and 38% respectively).

Strategic issues for printers and suppliers Both printers and suppliers face rapidly changing markets in generally tough economic conditions. But the key underlying change for at least the commercial and publishing markets is the rapid and largely irreversible adoption of digital communications. All printers listed the key constraints are the lack of sales and the consequential strong competition. As for the lack of sales there was broad agreement that the challenge of finding new customers was the toughest challenge followed by that of finding good sales staff. The third most common constraint was lack of demand for conventional print, but here opinion was sharply divided between Commercial (39%) and Publishing (43%) printers and Packaging (22%) and Functional (24%) printers.

2016 Printer investment plans Drupa 2016 – How Successful Printers Have been Growing their Sales? “To understand six characteristics of Globally Successful Printers which can help you increase your repeat sales up to 67%, just fix an appointment with OnPrintShop at drupa (hall 8B, D11),” says Naimish Patel, OnPrintShop.

This year marks the tenth anniversary of Ethisphere and the World’s Most Ethical Companies designation which recognizes those companies who align principle with action, work tirelessly to make trust part of their corporate DNA, and in doing so, shape future industry standards by introducing tomorrow’s best practices today. Xerox is one of only 14 ten-time honourees. “Since our earliest days, Xerox has been known for ethical behaviour and integrity,” said Don Liu, general counsel and secretary for Xerox. “With integrity, we earn one of the greatest qualities a business can aspire

to achieve: the trust of clients, investors, colleagues and the communities in which we work and live. This trust is earned through the actions of every Xerox employee around the globe.” The World’s Most Ethical Company assessment is based upon the Ethisphere Institute’s Ethics Quotient (EQ) framework developed over years of research and vetted and refined by the expert advice from Ethisphere’s World’s Most Ethical Company Methodology Advisory Panel. The EQ offers a quantitative way to assess a company’s performance in an objective, consistent and standardized way. The information collected provides a comprehensive sampling of definitive criteria of core competencies, rather than all aspects of corporate governance, risk, sustainability, compliance and ethics. Those that demonstrate leadership in areas like citizenship, integrity and transparency create more value for their investors, communities, customers and employees, thus solidifying a sustainable business advantage,” explained Ethisphere’s Chief Executive Officer, Timothy Erblich. “Congratulations to everyone at Xerox for being recognized as a World’s Most Ethical Company.”

EIB funds Heidelberg’s R&D activities A EUR 100 million loan from the European Investment Bank (EIB) is to support the research and development (R&D) activities of Heidelberg, focusing on digitisation, software integration and expansion of the digital printing portfolio. To help finance the R&D program, which will span several years, the EIB is providing the company with a development loan that can be drawn down in tranches, each with a seven-year term. This is the first time a large German company has benefited from the European Fund for Strategic Investments (EFSI) – the centrepiece of the Investment Plan for Europe. “We see the digitised and industrially organised print shop as an essential element for successful business models in our sector in the future. Working with our partners, we want to develop futureproof products and services that will help our customers to be successful,” says Gerold Linzbach, Heidelberg’s CEO. “I’m delighted that our first EFSI project for a German corporate customer allows

us to support a company whose products and services have long enabled it to stand its ground in a challenging market,” said Ambroise Fayolle, EIB Vice-President responsible for lending in Germany. “Heidelberg proves that it pays to invest in research and development, and EFSI is helping to keep this innovative spirit alive in Europe.” The EIB funding will help Heidelberg drive digitisation in the industry and further expand the packaging, digital and services growth segments. One focal point in this respect is making print shops more competitive by integrating and automating the entire value chain of industrial customers. To that end systems, combined with appropriate services, will in future operate ever more autonomously. Another aim is to enable the company’s customers to expand their business models with new digital printing solutions. Long-term financing framework lays foundation for further strategic corporate development

Following on from last year’s comprehensive refinancing activities, the EIB loan, which has a long-term focus stretching to 2024, rounds off the company’s financing mix, helping it to continue pursuing its strategy of innovation in the field of digitisation. “Over the next seven years, the EIB development loan will help us finance our research and development projects for digitisation on attractive terms. The financing framework is the basis for implementing the innovation strategy at Heidelberg and thus achieving the sustained profitable growth we are aiming for,” says Heidelberg CFO Dirk Kaliebe. The EIB makes long-term finance available for sound investment projects that tie in with EU policy goals, such as making European countries more competitive and supporting sustainable growth. EFSI is an initiative launched jointly by the EIB Group and the European Commission to help overcome the current investment gap in the EU. By mobilising private finance, it aims to make Europe more competitive and create high-quality jobs.

Hera Printing: Achieving new heights with Scodix Puerto Rico’s Hera creates a distinctive poster for Barcardi to celebrate its historical and celebrated mixed drink. “Free Cuba”) is an internationally appreciated cocktail of rum, lime and Coca Cola that, in 1900, helped celebrate Cuban independence during the Spanish-American War. Bacardi, in a visual approach, wanted to figuratively and literally raise a bottle and a glass, to honour the advent of this legendary drink. Barcadi, the famous rum company, recently desired a distinctive poster to characterize and celebrate one of today’s most popular, historical, and celebrated mixed drinks. Hera Printing, a top-rank San Juan, Puerto Rico printing firm, founded in 1978, is using Scodix technology to not only drive new revenue streams but to also reinvigorate loyal customers. Hera derives success by blending technologically advanced printmachine processes, and experienced print executives, with the honed skills of highlytrained craftspersons. The firm’s energetic team has built an impressive clients list, including the J. Walter Thompson agency, AT&T Communications, Abbott Laboratories, T-Mobile Communications, and Medical Card System, Inc. (MCS), as well as many other select and notable enterprises. One such renowned player, Barcadi, the famous rum company, recently desired a distinctive poster to characterize and celebrate one of today’s most popular, historical, and celebrated mixed drinks. Bacardi’s bold, “Cuba Libre,” (Spanish for

They soon learned that only Hera Printing, with its new Scodix S75 digital enhancement press that features the patented Scodix SENSE polymer coating process, could properly and price-efficiently produce the desired unique image. Hera VP Ricardo Garcia noted, “They (Barcadi) admired our four-color press processes, but the dimensional, Scodix finishing system brought them fully onboard. From the moment we installed the Scodix system into our printing plant, customer demand for its special finishing effects has continually ascended. Scodix has helped Hera surpass any print-industry competition by allowing the firm to offer award-winning products that were previously impossible to produce.” Bacardi’s executives provided a clear vision as to what they wanted to present. The legendary firm desired an image that was both traditional and progressive, liberating and breathtaking, in addition to rewarding and collectable. Bacardi’s design team chose Sappi Fine paper and Hera’s craftspersons processed the finished, CMYKplus-one image on a Heidelberg press. The fifth separation was reserved for the Scodix digital enhancement process. In one, final pass, the Scodix addressable-printhead system applied the SENSE polymer to Bacardi’s designer selected areas. “Bacardi’s beautiful poster became 3D,” Garcia said. “The result was jaw-dropping.” The Bacardi poster was a huge hit. Even better, it created a new advertising avenues for Bacardi. “We went from an attractive poster to collectible art — something that could only be achieved by Scodix processes.”

A Glossy Future The Scodix system, installed in Hera’s state-of-the-art facility, has allowed the firm to develop new revenue streams. Further, it injected new dynamics into its sales portfolios, which in turn has inspired clients and designers to conceive new imaging concepts for folios, newsletters, catalogues, magazines, presentation cards, cut sheets and press kits. “We’ve seen a definite increase in job volume,” Garcia said. “It’s so different that we refer to it as ‘Hera 3D’.” He said the feature’s affordable price tag further ignites client interest. “They can’t wait to use it.” Less than a year later, Hera was so busy that they traded in their Scodix S75 system for the faster and wider format of the Scodix Ultra system. Scodix offers the printing leader other advantages. For example, Hera no longer farms out such work as hot-foil stamping, embossing, lamination or other finishing embellishments. “It’s all done in-house, without need for additional hardware or software.” Garcia adds. “We are so very grateful to all the Scodix Team, their support, especially Isaac Castiel (Scodix Vice President, Latin America) who has been instrumental to our success. They are a great business partner. Our operation has been liberated by this technology,” he noted, adding, “…perhaps someone should name a cocktail after Scodix.”

Flint Group and partners host ‘Intelligent and Efficient – Green and Environmental-friendly’ conference Flexible Packaging in China across the scope of High Definition flexo printing In November, the golden leaves of the Gingko trees pave the avenue to the People Building of Xi’an, the ancient Chinese capital, to welcome the visitors. In the conference room on the third floor of the People Building, all 600 seats are occupied, and even more attendees were standing to listen to the forum “Intelligent and Efficient – Green and Environmental-friendly”, hosted by Shaanxi Beiren Printing Machinery. However, the visitors have not forgotten the thick fog from a few days before. To prevent this environmental dilemma, China has now adopted strict laws, which will also have consequences for the printing industry – especially the huge volume of gravure printing, which is in the spotlight. Thus, one of the objectives of the Xi’an forum was to explain the VOC emission control policy. Additionally, a new joint project of Shaanxi Beiren Printing Machinery, Flint Group Flexographic Products, Shanghai Auclean Printing Machine, SinwaPrintech (International) and other partners was presented at the event. With their approach to high definition flexo printing, the project partners managed an important step towards an environmentally friendly printing method for China. Following the event, the participants could inspect Shaanxi Beiren Printing Machinery’s FCI400 wide format satellite flexo printing press and experience a 150lpi high definition print run with a printing speed of 400 m/min. This state-of-the-art printing press is built with an electronic axis control system, a full servo

controlled impression setting and several other new features. It is also equipped with a high performance Auclean 1.000 lpi anilox roller. The output is brilliant and comparable with any gravure printed foil. The job was printed using a nyloflex ACE Digital flexographic printing plate from Flint Group. Additionally, the nyloflex NExT exposure technology was used to reproduce flat top dots and surface screening. This printing plate is particularly suitable for foil printing and shows an extreme durability and a long plate run life, especially in combination with the nyloflex NExT technology. A solvent based flexo ink of Flint Group’s Arrowfilm 1000 series was selected for this printing job. High colour density and high gloss can be achieved with this printing ink – thus the characteristics of a good dot reproduction could be fully demonstrated. SinwaPrintech provided the colour separation, and together with Flint Group experts, they were key factors to the success of the print trial.

“We see good opportunities for the future“, says QiHong-Magenta Zheng, General Manager Flint Group Flexographic Products in China. “Flexo printing stands for high efficiency and sustainable development. We believe that environmentally friendly, high definition flexo printing will have enormous business opportunities through such cooperation.”

GMG to offer OpenColor within HYBRID’s PACKZ PACKZ users will be able to benefit from the accurate profiling for any colour conversion PACKZ: Productivity tools for making designs print ready

GMG will be offering OpenColor colour separation technology within HYBRID Software’s PACKZ label and packaging editor and workflow. Visitors at drupa will see how the award winning multichannel profiling software fits seamlessly within PACKZ. Packaging is noted for print projects that include a large number of process and spot colours. The integration with GMG OpenColor will allow PACKZ to use accurate colour profiles, allowing PACKZ to use the colour conversion within its PDF editor to assure accurate transformations. This is particularly useful if the number of ink units are changed, or if the printer wants consistent representation of their brand colours.

& Display showcase will be showcasing the whole workflow from creating a structural design file all the way to the end product. Visitors will also get an opportunity to interact with company’s product specialists. Visitors can also schedule a demo at the Mumbai experience center. Mr. Umesh Kagade, Channel Manager of Esko South Asia states says, “At Esko, we trust in creative and innovative solutions which will help and grow a company’s efficiency and profitability in this highly competitive signage and display market. The use of Esko’s software in combination with the robust Kongsberg XN24 cutting table with its special heads allows any customer to create a unique product for the fast‐growing Indian market. Esko digital finishing portfolio is fuelling the industry’s transformation by helping converters expand their range of applications and offerings to their customers.”

PACKZ, from HYBRID Software, is the only professional editor for labels and packaging prepress that works entirely in the native PDF environment. Files are never converted, normalized, or “imported” into an intermediate format, but instead are edited directly as PDF files using HYBRID´s own PDF library, which was developed specifically for the demanding prepress requirements of labels and packaging. PACKZ contains a complete set of prepress-, editing- and quality assurance-functions, such as trapping, separation handling, barcode creation and recognition, dynamic creation of info panels, object based screening and many more. With its modern 64-bit architecture, running under OS-X and Windows, the native PDF-Editor ensures maximum performance and usability.

GMG OpenColor: Reliable proof profiles for packaging printing GMG’s patented OpenColor technology enables accurate proof simulation of the overprinting effects of spot colours using special multicolour profiles. The spectral data calculation includes printing technologies, media types and printing order—and its reliable results eliminate the necessity of profile iterations. GMG OpenColor is a complete printing press simulator—even if only CMYK is printed. It can demonstrate the effect of changing the order of the colour sequence, the print density or the substrate, immediately calculating a new profile. Thus, the result of changed conditions is predicted accurately and with minimal expenditure. The centralized storage of colour data in GMG OpenColor and the colour stability of GMG ColorProof ensure accurate results and repeatable quality. Integrating GMG OpenColor with PACKZ, it is possible to use any GMG OpenColor proofing profile to create a GMG OpenColor separation profile directly into the PDF editor. The benefit is that only one set of accurate fingerprint characterization data is required. For example, if a print designer sends a

12-colour job that will be transformed to an extended colour gamut job, the output conversion will be created directly from the supplied GMG profile. PACKZ has ability to colour convert the entire file—or object by object or individual colours. The PACKZ engine does the conversion, but with the GMG profiling technology, using the dynamic data provided by GMG OpenColor. If a printer is already using GMG OpenColor to create colour data for proofing, then GMG separations and the integration with PACKZ will be an easy, logical step to assure accurate colour. “GMG is very happy to be integrating our colour management and profiling tools with HYBRID Software’s PACKZ. We believe we create better colour than anyone else. We like to offer our customers as many opportunities to seamlessly apply our colour management tools as they operate other premedia solutions,” comments Paul Barnes, Product Management, GMG. “We have been working closely with HYBRID Software to combine colour profiling and conversion into one, interconnected packaging solution. We recently finalized the delivery mechanism between the two software systems, and will be starting field tests with select customers shortly. We expect that the official product release will occur no later than drupa. Ultimately, users will get much better results. It’s why people choose to implement better colour management from GMG.” “We are very pleased to be working with GMG Software. Their colour management engine is noted as the best in the industry, and we want to ensure that anyone who uses PACKZ can benefit from the most accurate colour conversions,” remarks Christopher Graf, Managing Director, HYBRID Software GmbH. “Colour is a critical demand of any label or packaging print buyer, and PACKZ users will soon be able to assure this to their customers.”

And with the statutory and legal requirements and the framework we need to comply with, it becomes more important for an organization to have its own in-house facility. Ipac will help improve the packaging design and performance of not only our panIndia operations but even the international businesses of GPI.” Sharad Aggarwal, Executive Vice President of Operations of Godfrey Philips India, says that the requirement of Ipac was felt for a

long time because working through various other agencies can make the process of designing new or existing packaging a bit tedious and sometimes slow. “We wanted to cut down on time and experiment with a lot of new materials as well as reduce costs. This is a significant investment from our side and although we are at a nascent stage, we really hope to gain a lot in the long term.”

Designing packaging with Esko solutions The Ipac center has invested in Esko’s ArtiosCAD, Studio Toolkit, Visualizer and Cape software. Structural designs for new and existing packs are created in ArtiosCAD whereas Studio Toolkit is creating complete 3D packaging in software that can be further tested in a virtual 3D environment such as a shop or supermarket. Esko’s Studio Visualizer software can be used to visualize a large variety of print effects and design styles and materials even before the product goes to the conversion stage. Sharma says, “Esko’s ArtiosCAD is one such software which has helped us in developing key line designs (KLD), proper artwork as well as 3D modeling for virtual and physical mock-ups. The Studio Toolkit and the Visualizer are helping us significantly in reducing the time from the development to the prototype stage.”

Sharma adds that the new GPI Ipac has received strong application and training support from Esko. He says, “I have visited Esko’s design center and office in Bengaluru and it is a fantastic place. Fotograv reaches colour complexity, workflow simplicity with DuPont Fotograv is one of the best known trade shops in Brazil. Since its inception in 1968, the company has been a pioneer in the introduction of new technology and plate processing for flexography and dry-offset printing in the Brazilian market .The company plays an instrumental role in the evolution of the printing value chain for flexible packaging (labels and packaging) in the country. Fotograv is committed to their mission of always bringing innovations in Flexography to their customers, helping them to advance their continuous printing process, and delivering improvements in quality, economy and time. They have raised the standard of Flexography by establishing partnerships with suppliers and customers.

Challenges In such a competitive environment as the Flexographic market, differentiation is a great challenge. The technology has grown so much over the years and discussions are no longer focused only on quality. Factors such as productivity, repeatability, the lowest setup cost per machine and the possibility of exploring the lowest possible dot in the plate are critical. Fidel Fernandes, director and partner of Fotograv, is proud of what is available today “In the past, Flexography was seen as a stamp and we know that it is far from it. In many situations, you do not have a magnifier available and one cannot distinguish between packaging printed in gravure or flexography “. As part of their commitment to driving innovation, Fotograv invests in various prepress technology offerings, made available to its customers. These are the most advanced products for the sector. Although they were finding high quality products that adhere to their current processes, they were still missing a simplification in prepress that could maintain or even surpass the level of quality required. They also needed a solution that enabled them to minimize process time and variables involved in the platemaking steps. The market knows the Flat Top Dot plays an important role in sustaining dot shape. It ensures better stability on press, allowing higher speeds in a machine and achieving high quality standards. In order to achieve these standards, systems such

as lamination, inert gas insertions and special UV lamps were widespread. These are systems Fotograv owns. In addition, software, lens and screenings have been developed, specifically to increase ink density and improve the highlight areas that contributed to increasing the final output of flexographic printing. However, all resources combined dramatically reduce the productivity of the trade shop, resulting in additional costs to some of these systems. Fotograv felt the need to find a definitive solution to this.

Solution Throughout its 40-year history, DuPont Cyrel has been committed to anticipating market needs by launching new products that meet the three following strategic pillars: quality, productivity and sustainability. It is important to continue to understand the needs of the market by simplifying processes and continuing to deliver prepress productivity reached in the past, without losing the print high quality achieved today. With that in mind, DuPont launched DuPont Cyrel EASY, a new generation of plates in 2015. This new platform technology simplifies the prepress process by building digital flat top dots directly into the plate. This results in increased productivity and consistency, offering high ink transfer and vibrant colours, making it a quick and simple process. The plates are available in four versions: • Cyrel EASY ESP – Solvent Engineered Surface • Cyrel EASY EPR – Solvent Smooth Surface

• •

Cyrel EASY EFE – FAST Engineered Surface Cyrel EASY EFX – FAST Smooth Surface

Committed to always delivering innovations to its customers, Fotograv demonstrated a strong interest in Cyrel EASY from its initial launch.

Results Aware of this technology since November 2015, Fotograv had the opportunity to share it with various converters. • Setup is extremely fast; • One of the items already printed more than 2 million meters being used is 15 unbelievable machine setups in perfect condition – Normally market average is 6-7 times depending on the run; • High Speed at press (400-600 m/m) with no dirty printing; • Very few stops for cleaning; • Clean minimum dots that guarantee the smoothness required of vignettes fading to zero; • Extremely low dot gain (almost null bump up curve); “Results like these make us very proud, especially when we hear from the customer,” says Germán Navas, sales manager, Latin America, DuPont Advanced Printing. Not only do converters and trade shops benefit from this innovation, but brand owners do as well. This solution guarantees repeatability bringing together where packaging is printed and fidelity in an agency’s layout. “The results are sensational, it is really a TOP product on the market,” said Fidel Fernandes. “It is a pleasure to know that Cyrel EASY is contributing to the success of this great partner. We invite all the market to learn the benefits of this innovative technology, which is a watershed in flexography “complete Navas.

Kinde boosts quality, productivity and sustainability with DuPont Cyrel FAST Located in East Guangdong Province, China, Guangdong Kinde recently installed a DuPont Cyrel FAST thermal platemaking system. The system consists of a Cyrel FAST 1001 TD processor, a Cyrel FAST 1000 ECLF finishing unit, and Esko CDI 2530. Founded in 2002, Kinde is a high technology enterprise with expertise in anti-counterfeiting label printing. The company serves some of the nation’s best known brands across many markets, including health and personal care, clothing, food, pharmaceutical OTC and alcohol. Such brands demand precise quality control in the printing process and superior results to set their brands apart in the marketplace. An additional challenge was the need for shorter lead times, as delivery of the final label is often required only a few days after the design is available. To fulfill its customers’ increasing demands and expectations in regard to quality and lead times, Kinde invested in new state-of-art flexo technology. The company made the decision to purchase the DuPont Cyrel FAST thermal platemaking system after extensive research and testing of the available options in the flexographic market. “You need to ensure the brand is represented in perfect printing quality on each package, in each batch,” said Mr.Huang, Kinde Production Manager. “Previously we struggled with quality control in letterpress printing. That’s why we made the decision to invest in the Gallus flexo printing press and the DuPont Cyrel FAST thermal platemaking system. It enables us to achieve consistent, superior print quality as well as high productivity and sustainability. ” Mr. Huang continued, “We are able to get the plate ready on press in less than one hour with Cyrel FAST. It really improves our productivity and enables us to meet the lead time. We are now hearing that brand owners want to reduce the environmental footprint of their product life cycle. Cyrel FAST is the perfect solution to meet the customers‘ sustainability demands since it eliminates the need for conventional solvents and aqueous washout solutions in the platemaking process.”

“The FAST system installation was very well coordinated,” said Mr. Huang. “A DuPont Advanced Printing representative and engineer was on-site to help with the installation and provide guidance and technical training which reduced errors during the trial and helped us integrate smoothly.” The new Cyrel FAST 1001 TD is a small format thermal platemaking system that has been redesigned and streamlined for improved dimensional stability and efficiency.

The Cyrel FAST 1001 TD uses a unique thermal management system and multiple roller design to improve clean-out, provide more consistent relief depth and a more uniform floor, especially with thin gauge (.045”) plates often used for tag and label applications.

Parkside makes investment in Malaysia Speciality packaging manufacturer, Parkside, is to significantly invest in its Malaysian operations to ensure its growing customer base in the Asia region can access the same high quality innovation and service as in Europe.

A new slitter and full plate making technology is to be installed enabling the site in Kuala Lumpur to be self-sufficient from receipt of design through to end product shipment. In addition, a 10-colour flexographic press will be transferred there from Parkside’s UK site. Commenting on the investment, John Taylor, general manager at Parkside Asia, said: “The print and packaging industry in Asia is beginning to accept and recognise the cost and efficiency advantages that flexographic printing can bring to their operations. As a leading player in this field in Europe, Parkside is eager to demonstrate its abilities in Asia and ensure its increasing number of customers in the region have access to local facilities and capabilities. This investment will enable us to offer our international customers the high level of service they are used to from our UK operations and for Asia to build on this strength with local manufacturing, service and support.” The investment will also result in a faster

turnaround service and significantly reduce current lead times ensuring customers can respond to changing market demands quickly. With the new machinery expected to be in place by end of Q2, print operators from Malaysia have been working at the company’s UK site in West Yorkshire to learn more about the operation of each piece of technology so that they can train colleagues back in Malaysia and ensure any downtime is kept to a minimum during installation. The site in Malaysia employs more than 40 people and primarily manufactures and prints packaging for the tobacco industry. Parkside is also focused on growing its reach into specialty packaging for the food and beverage markets in the region in line with its core strategy in Europe.

Laser ablative dry films LADF gain in popularity Due to the transition to digital imaging in flexo and letterpress plate processing, the number of users and the variety of imaging films suitable for chemical processing has dramatically decreased in recent years. More and more trade shops and printers are discontinuing chemical film processing and are switching to laser ablative dry films for non-digital plate types. The LADF is a laser ablative dry film, which has been designed for imaging on infrared laser systems. The imaged film can be used for the UV exposure of analogue flexographic, letterpress and offset plates, as well as for screen printing and for image control. Due to the very high resolution (>10.000 dpi) as well as the high contrast, it is suitable for almost all applications.

and allows for reliable and repeatable quality in film processing. After ablation, no further processing steps are required; there is no need for chemicals such as developer or fixer. The LADF film can be handled in daylight, so there is neither a need for a darkroom nor UV protection. For imaging, all standard IR lasers used in flexo and letterpress applications can be used; therefore, no additional investments are required. In summary, the LADF film offers a considerable time and cost savings potential to the customer.

The laser ablative dry film, LADF, is a product, which has been developed by Flint Group Flexographic Products in cooperation with Swiss Folex AG, manufacturer of films and paper used in current imaging technologies.

The matte film surface enables the exposure of small size pad printing plates up to large size flexo printing plates. The thickness of 175 microns ensures good handling properties and high dimensional stability. The LADF film minimises the process tolerances
