Indraprasth Printers: Graduates ‘Magna cum Laude’ with Heidelberg SM-74 Mumbai based Indraprasth Printers has recently crowned its last decade’s progress with a new Heidelberg SM-74 4-colour press. “Once I made the conscious shift to Heidelberg there was no looking back,” beams Pravin Totre, the founder of Indraprasth Printers, a Mumbai-based commercial printing firm. Recently, Indraprasth installed a new Heidelberg SM-74 four-colour press in its shop floor, crowning its progress in the past decade. “With the brand new Heidelberg addition, we graduated Magna Cum Laude in commercial printing,” Totre smiles. Indraprasth was founded nine years ago, after Totre decided to put his extensive and intensive experience in the printing industry to work for him. In 2005, he made the giant leap from employee to entrepreneur to establish ‘Indraprasth Printers’ in the Ghatkopar Industrial Estate in the suburbs of Eastern Mumbai.
“The Speedmaster SM-74 offers a fabulous level of automation, reducing the role of manual labour to minimal. Ever since installing the new press, the need for human intervention has declined dramatically by 70-75%. All that needs to be done is to follow the thumb rules of printing and finish the job.”

Today, Indraprasth is a compelling commercial presence in Ghatkopar, thanks to Totre’s ROI-focused approach to commercial printing. The print shop is engaged in the production of promotional materials like folders, booklets, and brochures. Pravin Totre’s relentless pursuit of excellence led him to a new Heidelberg Speedmaster SM-74, but what truly swayed his decision in favour of the machine is the high level of automation that could be achieved with the four-colour press.
“The Speedmaster SM-74 offers a fabulous level of automation, reducing the role of manual labour to minimal. Ever since installing the new press, the need for human intervention has declined dramatically by 70-75%. All that needs to be done is to follow the thumb rules of printing and finish the job,” he states emphatically.
How does this help? “A lot”, he gestures with his hands. “Lesser manual intervention leads to lesser stress levels and higher productivity.” The Heidelberg Speedmaster SM-74 fits Totre’s printing requirements to a tee. The four-color press is equipped with automation components like Auto Plate that reduce make-ready and setup times phenomenally compared to other presses. The machine also boasts of a highly automated feeder with central suction tape to handle the widest possible range of substrates, from thin paper to board, ranging in thickness from 0.03 mm (0.0012 inches) to 0.6 mm (0.024 inches). The Prinect Press Center of the Speedmaster SM-74 enables straightforward and precise machine control through its innovative Intellistart process-oriented operator-guidance system and the make-ready process is very much stress-free.

interesting, but valuable as well to other printers. “It is not enough to be just good,” he says, “Innovation is the key to stay ahead of competition. In an environment where the next guy is as good as you are or even better, you need to find ways to differentiate your offerings. This is where Heidelberg comes into play. My customers are more than happy with the excellent print quality delivered by the Speedmaster SM 74. Containing costs is yet another way to beat competition,” he adds thoughtfully. “Running a tight ship on expenses helps keep liabilities in check. But, cost cutting does not mean you compromise on the quality. Even when I used second-hand machines before, I always went for original Heidelberg spare parts. I don’t believe in trading long-term benefits for short-term cost savings.” The major milestone, Indraprasth has achieved with the Speedmaster SM 74, is the completion of one crore impressions or 14438852 impressions to be exact, within 8 months of installation. This is a record for a Speedmaster SM 74 press within such an incredibly short time-span. Alongside the Heidelberg SM-74, Indraprasth currently operates a Heidelberg SORM single-colour press that can accommodate a wide range of printing needs. Also Indraprasth has the Polar cutting equipment and finishing solutions.
“Despite economic headwinds, we not only kept our heads above the water, but managed a decent run as well, thanks to our lean operations,” Totre explains. “I do not believe in stretching myself thin by adding unnecessary machines and manpower just to stay competitive,” he adds. His insight on the fierce cutthroat competition prevalent in the commercial printing industry is not only
Pamex Core Group to meet in Mumbai and Delhi
Totre believes in a lean and nimble business model, an operating philosophy that has helped Indraprasth tide over the economic crisis that triggered a slowdown in the Indian Graphic Arts industry during the last couple of years.

All India Federation of Master Printers (AIFMP), which has successfully organized nine editions of Pamex, has come together with PrintPackaging.com (P) Ltd. On a concluding note, he says, “My decision to buy a new Speedmaster SM-74 press is already paying off. Maintenance costs have come down sharply and productivity has touched record levels. Heidelberg is always the best bet in terms of quality and ROI.”
“There is a lot of excitement about Pamex in this edition. We want to involve the industry in a meaningful way to make this event a must-attend event not only for the India
printers but also the entire fraternity from the neighbouring countries,” said AMSG Ashokan, President, All India Federation of Master Printers (AIFMP) and Chairman of PAMEX-2015. The event is coming to Mumbai after eight years.

Heidelberg realigns postpress portfolio Heidelberg is realigning its postpress portfolio. In-house production at the Heidelberg sites in Germany is no longer competitive under the new market conditions. The relevant operations are therefore being discontinued, except for production of folding machines at the Ludwigsburg site. Postpress Packaging products and solutions will in future be developed and manufactured by the new Chinese OEM partner Masterwork Machinery Co., Ltd, with Heidelberg retaining responsibility for sales and service activities. In the Postpress Commercial business area, Heidelberg will only continue to market the established folding machines and cutters. Swiss company Müller Martini will take over

service activities for installed equipment from discontinued series. These measures will not affect business with Polar cutters and Heidelberg folding machines. “We were able to win two renowned suppliers as partners for our realigned Postpress portfolio,” said Stephan Plenz, Member of the Board, Heidelberg Equipment. “They will help us provide our customers with competitive products and ensure continuity in services and service parts.” The reduction of in-house capacities will result in the closure of the Leipzig site and a corresponding reduction in the workforce at the Ludwigsburg and Wiesloch-Walldorf sites.
A total of around 650 employees worldwide will be affected. At its Annual Press Conference, Heidelberg announced the development of new business models for products with weak margins as part of its portfolio optimization. “The competitiveness of postpress product lines at Heidelberg was limited, so these activities are being placed on an entirely new footing”, said Heidelberg CEO Gerold Linzbach. “Realigning these areas is an important step in improving the company’s economic situation and getting closer to the target EBITDA margin of at least 8 percent.”

It was a proud moment for all concerned to see this project come to full fruition.” “Goss is focused on providing technology that is cost-effective and easy to use, while our dedicated service ethic ensures the technology is matched to customer objectives and continues to remain relevant with evolving requirements,” concludes D’Angelo. “We are proud to showcase these claims at GRAPH EXPO 2014.” In support of its GRAPH EXPO technology showcase, Goss CEO Rick Nichols will host a breakfast meeting on September 29th at McCormick Place, to provide an update on corporate and product developments.

AutoImpose in Apogee. Automatic web printing imposition is based on web press production schemes. Production schemes are available for all web presses describing the complete feature set of the installation including cutting, slitting, folding and binding alternatives. Apogee takes into account every parameter to define the best imposition. Jörn Knabe, Prepress manager at Bagel RotoOffset in Germany, installed and is using Apogee. He said: “The imposition solution relieves our day-to-day work because now Apogee calculates the imposition based on the predefined schemes from our web press.” Bagel RotoOffset in Meineweh near Leipzig installed the first 96- page web offset press from manroland for the printing of inserts and supplements. An important preliminary task was the up-scaling of the entire “Very Very Large Format” prepress workflow. Bagel RotoOffset’s new Avalon N48 CtP engine from Agfa Graphics, which can image plates to 48-up, and the latest upgrade of the Apogee Prepress Workflow are the key components of this fully automated, high run length print production configuration.

IDS-3D – the first image based register control and colour control camera in the world Q.I. Press Controls and EAE join forces with all-purpose camera IDS-3D. Two specialists in the field of print automation have joined forces to launch the latest innovation in quality automation, soon to be on display for the first time at WAN-IFRA’s World Publishing Expo 2014 in Amsterdam. The precursor had already been presented by Q.I. Press Controls at DRUPA 2012: the orange-coloured, dual-sensor mRC-3D camera system. At the time, the system was cryptically described as ‘offering a diversity of potential benefits’. These have now been embodied in the new IDS-3D camera system!
EAE’s takeover by the owners of Q.I. Press Controls’ has enabled developers in both companies to combine the best of both worlds and produce one full-colour print quality control and regulation system. Algorithms for the LOOP and IDS, for example, were implemented in a single new system: IDS-3D. All functions are now executed with combined intelligence on full-colour print lines, without the need for any printed bars, strips or markings!
•
IDS-3D also incorporates the same triedand-tested automatic cleaning system as the mRC-3D. A cassette with a film in front of the lens ensures proper functioning of the system at all times. The camera is able to see whether the film has been smudged and cleans this whenever required. The IDS-3D looks like and is positioned on rotary presses in the same way as the mRC3D. However, the difference is under the “bonnet” and it can be identified by its blue exterior.
The launch of IDS-3D means that the market now has its own unique ‘all-in-one’ system. The very same dual-sensor IDS-3D camera has built-in process algorithms to ensure simultaneous closed-loop corrections, such as:
•
•
Optimisation of the CMYK colour register, first and second register, unit2unit register and likewise the cocking register for the heatset rotation. Optimisation of colours in compliance with ISO 12647-3 and/or ISO 12647-2 by controlling the ink keys, including water balance optimisation. Immediate recognition and signalling of incorrectly positioned print plates and irregularities and/or printing errors in relation to the virtual TIFF image and/or approved print.
The first orders for this high-efficiency, closed-loop, all-in-one quality control system have already been placed. The IDS-3D camera signals the end for previous systems, which used different types of cameras for different functions on rotary presses. As from now there is a single solution for everything: IDS-3D. It’s also an extremely beneficial solution for retrofit upgrades for tasks sometimes carried out manually on rotary presses, such as colour corrections and fountain solution control.
IDS-3D
Intelligent Density System (IDS-3D) is a fully automatic colour measurement and press control system for web offset presses. The IDS-3D can consistently reproduce colours by charting the technical print properties of the press and taking the paper type into account. Major savings can also be generated in respect of both labour and waste. If the system is running in “markless” mode, your client has more net (sellable) printing surface available, due to the absence of the colour bar.

Iwate Nippo orders two Mitsubishi 4 x 1 DIAMONDSPIRIT Presses New presses to bring warmth and encouragement to the many residents affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Printing & Packaging Machinery (MHI-PPM) has announced the recent contract signing with Iwate Nippo for the purchase of two Mitsubishi 4 x 1 DIAMONDSPIRIT newspaper offset presses. Founded in 1876, Iwate Nippo will celebrate its 140th anniversary with the arrival of the new Mitsubishi presses and the startup of its new flagship printing center scheduled for the early summer of 2016. Iwate Nippo is headquartered in Morioka City, the capital of Iwate Prefecture. The prefecture was one of the hardest hit areas devastated by the Great East Japan Earthquake of March 2011. Following the earthquake, Iwate Nippo is one of those who have exercised the leadership in the prefecture’s planning and support of social needs, and has significantly contributed to the region’s relief and recovery efforts. One such effort was a special report compiled and published by Iwate Nippo about the Great East Japan Earthquake. The report looked at what was done and not done in terms of earthquake preparations, and also emphasized the requirements necessary for the restoration of affected residents’ livelihood, industries, and local and regional societies. With a daily circulation of 210,000 copies, Iwate Nippo is widely popular among local
residents and enjoys the No. 1 market share of all newspapers sold in the prefecture. When the company started to work on its new printing center project, it appointed MHIPPM as a consultant, because MHI-PPM first developed 4 x 1 press suitable to Japanese newspaper production, and is now by far the most well experienced 4 x 1 press supplier with more than 30 DIAMONDSPIRIT press installations. The company’s new printing centre project is proceeding smoothly in a timely manner with MHI-PPM’s sound advice on production equipment, printing materials, and energy supply requirements appropriate to the region’s colder climate and environment. Right advice and sufficient installation records made Iwate Nippo comfortably select the DIAMONDSPIRIT presses for its new printing centre. Both of the new presses will be able to print 40-page newspapers with 24 pages in colour, while Iwate Nippo’s current presses can only print 16 pages of its 40-page daily in colour. After the startup of the new DIAMONDSPIRIT presses, the superb print quality of all the 24 colour pages will surely enhance the publication’s news stories and other vibrant articles, and further encourage residents to continue moving forward against the earthquake. The DIAMONDSPIRIT presses for Iwate Nippo are rated at 80,000 cph with a web

Two Esko innovations to receive PIA 2014 InterTech Technology Awards The innovative milestones Esko Full HD Flexo and Esko Equinox have resulted in seven InterTech awards over the past ten years. Esko has announced that Esko Full HD Flexo platemaking system and Esko Equinox, Esko´s solution for the implementation of extended gamut – or fixed inkset – printing, are both recipients of 2014 Printing Industries of America InterTech Technology Awards. Since 1978 the InterTech Technology Awards, sponsored by Printing Industries of America, have honoured the development of technologies predicted to have a major impact on the graphic arts and related industries. More than 80% of technologies that receive an award experience continued commercial success in the marketplace.
These are the sixth and seventh InterTech awards Esko solutions have received over the past ten years. Other recipients include Esko WebCenter (2006), Esko DeskPack 3-dX (2007), Esko Neo (2008), Esko Studio Toolkit for Shrink Sleeves (2011) and i-cut Suite (2012).
Key Notes : > Esko Full HD Flexo – platemaking system for superior flexo printing for all packaging applications. > Equinox – Esko’s patented technology for converting packaging graphics from CMYK and spot colour to seven-colour process. > HD Flexo plates – producing images with complete, 0-100% dot coverage delivering a wider colour gamut.

“We are very honoured to receive two awards from Printing Industries of America this year. Esko has a legacy of listening to our customers and using our ingenuity to develop products – very often new product concepts or categories – that offer our customers tremendous added value,” explains Carsten Knudsen, Esko President and CEO. “Esko’s insistence in investing a much higher portion of our budget than the industry average into R&D every year helps to support our continuous innovation helps to fuel these products that result in competitive advantages for our customers.”
Esko Full HD Flexo: superior flexo printing plates Esko Full HD Flexo is a platemaking system for superior flexo printing for all packaging applications. It utilizes a patented, fully digitally controlled platemaking system combining high-resolution 4000ppi imaging with a unique inline UV main exposure unit. An LED-array delivers UV power density strong enough to fully control the plate polymerization process during main exposure. For the first time, flexo plates are imaged, exposed and
delivered directly to the plate processor, without need for light table exposure. With Full HD Flexo, flexo platemaking has become a true “Computer to Plate” process: no lamination, no films, and no extra steps with light tables. No special consumables are needed, and it is not proprietary: it works with all popular digital flexo plates and sleeves. Everything is done in the CDI imager. Plates are ready for processing after unloading. Full HD Flexo has had a positive impact on efficiency and cost. Press changeovers are faster and downtimes are reduced. Substrate selection is less critical. Full HD Flexo also offers consistency, because Inline UV technology maintains consistent, digitally controlled UV light output throughout the entire plate, while lamps in a bank exposure frame continuously age and need frequent replacement every few hundred hours. Bank exposure frames also deliver different UV output over the entire frame area. “The judges noted that the inline UV technology is more controllable,” notes Mark Bohan, Vice President, Technology and Research, Printing Industries of America. “The judges also considered Full HD Flexo plate imaging a much more flexible process, with the ability to digitally control the generation of a dot shape, combining highlight capabilities of round dots with

as labels. This has enabled many of the world’s largest consumer product companies to convert entire product lines to expanded gamut. “The judges liked the smart filters, the math and colour algorithms associated with Esko Equinox,” says Bohan. By quantifying only subsets of four-colour combinations, Equinox 7-colour profiles contain hundreds of times the amount of colour data as a 7-colour ICC colour profile. These profiles are used to convert industry standard ink books into tint build books for a specific flexo press. Equinox also benefits from Esko HD and Full HD Flexo platemaking, which is able to extend the gamut by producing plates that can print dots from 0-100% while delivering consistent and reliable printing results from job to job.
the solid ink lay down and print stability of ‘flat top’ flexo plates – which the judges agreed is not a trivial process. HD Flexo plates can produce images with complete, 0-100% dot coverage delivering a wider colour gamut. It was also significant that the technology is upgradeable, already has a sizeable installed base, and is not plate specific,” adds Bohan. “The very strong customer letters demonstrated that HD Flexo is allowing flexo to challenge gravure and offset.” This is occurring among a wide array of flexible packaging, labels and corrugated printers worldwide.
Esko Equinox: Proving the viability of extended gamut printing “While people tried to promote extended gamut printing in the past, it had been dedicated to offset, where printers might not have ample press units to take advantage of the technology. However, flexo presses have seven, eight or more units already – and it is significant for companies that are working to match

brand colours,” states Bohan. “While this technology is used with other print methods, it was developed specifically for flexo. The industry is ready to embrace this technology. It beats managing specially-mixed inks.” Equinox Expanded Color Gamut (ECG) Technology is Esko’s patented technology for converting packaging graphics from CMYK and spot colour to seven-colour process. It is applied in the prepress department when preparing jobs for press. Converting entire files results in extremely close matches to spot colours, improved pictorial images, and the ability to print more colours than available ink stations on the press, resulting in improved image quality and brand impact. The major benefit, however, is realized in the pressroom as jobs print more economically and more consistently. The ability to create an infinite number of colours from 7 process colours promotes “gang” press runs – and the economic savings can surpass a million dollars per press per year. Customers using Equinox ECG technology report that they use 7-colour process profitably in a production environment for flexible packaging as well
Esko Equinox is a major achievement because it moves flexographic printing a giant step closer to being the economical manufacturing process that the major CPCs of the world are demanding. “The fact that the judges had a lengthy discussion about a specific PowerPoint presentation shows both the interest and dedication. Everyone got involved with all the materials,” observes Bohan. “They also noted that all the Equinox print sample images were cleaner than 4-colour images. But the benefit that was not lost with the judges was the economic advantages of extended gamut printing.” What is significant is that, while Full HD Flexo and Equinox are strong products successfully used separately, both offer a unique synergy when used together: the exceptional quality and reliable printing offered by Full HD Flexo, and the economics delivered by extended gamut printing that is significantly assured with Full HD Flexo plates. “Esko takes our role in the industry very seriously. We spend a good deal of time understanding the direction of the industry – and try to help to drive it – before we strategize products that truly are innovative but also have merit in the industry. It takes a lot of work to create a viable vision that drives the development of products like Full HD Flexo and Equinox. However, while we are flattered that these products have received acclaim this year, it is even more gratifying that many converters throughout the world are using Full HD Flexo plates and Equinox to produce exceptional packaging that offers a very powerful economic incentive,” concludes Knudsen.

A Label is a Complex Technical Construction FINAT’s annual congress focuses on the ‘battle of decoration technologies’ through an expert panel of suppliers Delivering a ‘label’ is not just a matter of printing it. It involves a complex value chain that also spans the material to be printed and the machinery to apply it – whatever the technology employed. The ‘battle of decoration technologies’ was the focus for an expert panel of suppliers who came together at the annual congress of the label industry’s international association, FINAT, to debate the challenges and opportunities. Their discussions provided valuable insights that set the context for improved communication between brand-owning end users and their ‘label’ suppliers – including printers.
FINAT is actively pursuing the promotion of a broader technology base than has been traditional in label printing companies, and the topics raised by delegate questions in this valuable panel discussion prove that the association’s membership is also enthusiastically embracing a wider definition of a ‘label’.
Representatives from key – and different – aspects of today’s industry supply chain formed the discussion panel. They were Stefan Richter (D), Krones, manufacturers of advanced process, filling, and packaging equipment – including different label application systems; Geert-Jan Kolkhuis Tanke (NL), Avery Dennison, representing a global supplier of label materials, both paper and film, particularly for self-adhesive labels; and Raul Matos (USA), founder of Karlville Development LLC, global player in shrink sleeve converting and application equipment as well as pouch converting.
portfolio of hardware and software products, particularly in the food arena.
Which technology? ‘Why would a brand owner choose any particular labelling technology for a product?’, Mr Büttgenbach asked. For shrink sleeves, Karlville’s Raul Matos said that it is the ‘ability to label different shapes and sizes of container. Sleeves on smaller single-serve bottles are economically-viable’, he said. The choice driver for self-adhesive labels, said Avery Dennison’s GeertJan Kolkhuis Tanke, would be ‘the huge selection of materials and products available to meet every price requirement – and changing with innovation, as with other technologies.’ In fact, the panel agreed, we are living in a multitechnology society – and a society where the materials employed will work with both conventional and digital presses. ‘Krones today make multitechnology labelling machines’, said Stefan Richter, reviewing current trends. ‘While wet-glue labelling is declining,’ he added, ‘it is still only possible to achieve the “no-label look” with self-adhesives.’
Ever-changing demands The opportunity to cross-question suppliers was enthusiastically embraced by the congress delegates, who were encouraged prior to the debate to submit questions to moderator Marc Büttgenbach – himself worldwide sales director for labels and consumables for Bizerba, worldwide providers of a wide-ranging
Indeed, the demands of a ‘label’ are ever-changing – not just in response to brand owners’ marketing and promotional needs, such as QR codes, but – particularly today -- in response to legislative requirements for expanded label content. The resultant for greater label space, and bigger labels,

technology: linerless labelling, which is already achieving a strong presence on supermarket food prepacks, and to another developing pathway for label converters -- printing flexible packaging. Mr Matos observed: Our industry currently only has a tiny percentage of this market’, he added, ‘but we could have much more!’ He reminded the audience that two different, but complementary, businesses exist within the broad packaging arena -- primary and secondary packaging – both of which could, today, be addressed by label producers. He added, however: ‘In our industry, this requires a mindshift... we need to embrace flexible packaging as a closely-related brother industry.’
is certainly challenging brand owners and the label supply chain. In this respect, Avery Dennison’s Geert-Jan Kolkhuis Tanke drew attention to the value of leaflet labels, which he described as ‘applying labels to labels’, and which have been a successful feature of self-adhesive labelling – particularly in the field of pharmaceuticals -- for many years now. Expanded label content is also a topic of focus for the very distinct production characteristics of shrink sleeve labels, according to Karlville’s Raul Matos. He observed: ‘QR codes, for example, need to be placed on an area of low shrink’, he said, underlining the need to involve the whole supply chain, from the designer onwards, in creating a successful shrink sleeve.
Security and ‘smart’ data functionality Barcodes and other ‘smart’ printed data also have a role to play in product authentication and track-and-trace activities – which are only one part of the opportunities to create layered overt – visible -- and covert – invisible -- security elements in and on a self-adhesive label, as Mr Kolhuis Tanke pointed out. RFID labels are, of course, a good example of the successful application of this principle although, as Mr Matos added, they are today primarily ‘interesting as a security device for high-priced products’. Conversation moved on to a subject which the panel agreed is definitely a coming
He drew attention to a good example of a practical enabler in this respect -- the latest HP Indigo digital press for both paper and film webs up to 750mm wide, which is capable of printing flexible packaging.
capabilities of digital technologies. ‘With all our currently-available technologies’, said Krones’ Stefan Richter, ‘we still can’t decorate a three-dimensional surface!’ 3D printing’s challenges are partnered in the threats arena by direct-to-container print, which do away with the need for an additional label substrate, as shrink sleeve expert Mr Matos pointed out.
The future? Price versus sustainability The moderator directed the conversation to a major focus for FINAT members: the issue of ‘price versus sustainability’. The true definition of ‘sustainability’ needs to be established, said Mr Kolkhuis Tanke for Avery Dennison, because, he said, ‘it is also about efficiency on the production line, and TCO – total cost of ownership: can it bring savings?’ Mr Matos, for Karlville Development, expanded the discussion to include shrink sleeves, which, he said, are in some “green” communities not considered a sustainable solution. ‘But’, he underlined, ‘new technology DOES now allow sleeve separation in PET recycling.’ He added that he believes ‘shrink sleeves will continue to grow as packaging continues to change: refills, pouches with closures these are the things that will create the tipping point.’ ‘Sustainability is also about the trend to thinner materials’, Mr Richter pointed out, highlighting a key factor for Krones’ business platform. They, however, ‘require more skill at the application point, and underline the need for quality labelling materials – even though thinner materials are driven by price!’
Threats? Two pathways to product decoration were identified as threats to the label industry – both primarily focussed on the increasing
Currently, Krones are experiencing increasing evidence that brand owners are choosing a ‘mix’ of labelling technologies, Mr Richter said. ‘In fact’, Moderator Büttgenbach added, ‘labelling and packaging are merging together, more and more. What, then, is the likely scenario for five to ten years’ time?’ For Mr Kolkhuis Tanke and Avery Dennison, it will mean ‘more self-adhesive products, greater efficiency, high-speed label application, and much more in the way of ‘smart’ labels and Near-Field Communication (NFC) -- which not only influence consumer behaviour but also significantly augment label functionality’. For Karlville, Mr Matos expects that the medium term will see full automation in the application of shrink sleeves as the market matures, plus a larger share in flexible packaging – particularly pouches. Whatever the case, the label application machinery has a key enabling role to play, said Krones’ Stefan Richter. ‘There will be a highly-flexible “open system” of application – but material suppliers need to involve the application industry earlier in their developments to facilitate change at our end.’ Will any one technology be the ultimate winner, was the moderator’s final question. The panel agreed that there is room for everyone. ‘We will all be part of a growing business’, said Mr Richter.

Israel’s first QuadTech Inspection System eliminates white ink CLP has installed QuadTech Inspection System which removes need for white ink for print inspection on translucent and transparent substrates, enabling time and money savings. QuadTech has sold its first Inspection System in Israel, to CLP of Kibbutz Negba. Installed on a new eight-colour gravure press, the QuadTech system was chosen for its ability to inspect translucent and transparent flexible packaging materials, without the need for white ink – simplifying production and enabling substantial financial savings. Prior to its QuadTech purchase, CLP had been printing white to provide a target to help other inspection systems function on these very common substrates. However, as white ink wasn’t requested by customers, it was a cost that CLP had to absorb. This not only included ink costs, but also extended to prepress time, flexo plates and gravure cylinders too.

“While quality control is a top priority for us, it was an expensive process to undertake on translucent and transparent substrates. So, when we decided to install a new Windmöller & Hölscher press, we took the opportunity to see if there was a solution on the market that could inspect without the need to print white for inspection,” explained Israel Moran, Supply Chain Manager at CLP. “Fortunately, following a visit to the QuadTech stand at drupa 2012, we quickly established that there was. This resulted in the installation of our QuadTech Inspection System.” To eliminate the practice of printing white to facilitate inspection, the QuadTech Inspection System uses a combination of three LED lights, one of which is a reflected light illuminating the back of the web. The resulting image on the control screen can then be adjusted to show a black, white or gray background to create the necessary contrast to enable accurate fault detection and eliminate the additional ink. Inspecting 100% of the web 100% of the time, the
QuadTech Inspection System detects process faults including spots, streaks, mis-prints, mis-register, colour variation, contamination, dry-in and haze. With an easy-to-use operator interface and fast set-up, the QuadTech Inspection System provides a high level of quality assurance for converters and their customers. “We are very pleased that, throughout the process, QuadTech worked closely with us to support our needs,” continues Israel Moran. “They demonstrated a real willingness to address the challenges we faced, providing a genuine partnership approach to customer service. “The QuadTech Inspection System has been everything we had hoped for and by eradicating the white ink step, we have been able to enjoy significant savings,” he concludes. Part of the Tadbik Group, CLP serves customers in the food, medical and healthcare markets. It is widely known as a producer of high quality flexible packaging for brands, but also as a developer of innovative applications including retort laminates and pouches, taste-free water packaging and other creative solutions. Caroline Zimmer, QuadTech regional sales leader, comments, “We were very pleased to help solve this technical challenge for CLP. With brands demanding ever more exacting print quality standards, it is increasingly important for businesses such as CLP to find technologies to meet their needs, but also, do this while reducing overall costs and increasing profitability. We look forward to further sales in Israel.”

MPS introduces UV flexo press with choice of plate rolls or print sleeves MPS has introduced its flagship EF flexo printing press that features a choice of either plate rolls or print sleeves to printers. The technology will be presented at Labelexpo Americas, where local MPS organizations MPS America and MPS Latin America are joining forces. According to Denny McGee, president of MPS America LLC, the EF press is a highquality production press that features both UV and hot-air drying technology, allowing users to print diverse substrates including film, paper, shrink sleeves and flexible packaging. “Our goal at MPS is to help printers excel. We listen closely to their needs and challenges, and develop solutions that specifically address them, that is for example why we made the EF available for both plate rolls or print sleeves at moment of order,” he said. The EF press is particularly geared at enabling press operators to maximize their performance. “The key for success in today’s label and packaging industry is the press operator,” said McGee. “His or her skills, experience and motivation determine more than anything else the productivity and printing quality and, ultimately, the return on investment. It’s all about people. However, finding and keeping these operators is one of the biggest challenges printers face. While we can’t help them find those people, we can develop
printing presses that enable printers to get the most out of their press operators. Our EF press is a great example of this – combining choice of plating with automation, superior print quality and ease of operation.” McGee cited three automation features of the EF that help maximizing the performance of the operator: job memory, AutoTeach technology and iStop technology. With the use of the servo-drives, all press settings are automated in the EF, which reduces set-up waste and offers simpler machine operation. The AutoTeach technology, he says, enables operators to determine the desired web path and the machine teaches itself automatically the web path being used. The iStop technology optimizes stops and starts during printing, allowing the operator to stop the machine at any point during the production run with no additional waste occurring when the press is restarted. The EF’s second major differentiator is its print quality. With its patented Crisp.Dot printing technology, which features a unique, free-running rubberized impression roller and temperature control system, the ink dots don’t stretch or streak. This results in the print dot retaining its round shape, the ink coverage being solid and small fonts being sharper. “Our customers tell us that with the EF press, the pressroom manager can trust that whoever is doing the job, the result will consistently be at an extreme high quality and productivity level,” said McGee.
The EF’s third major differentiator is its ease of operation, which McGee illustrated by citing three features: iSet technology, iControl technology and quick change dies. “The iSet is a print pressure setting that enables the operator to do fine adjustments with a simple turn of a dial,” he said. “The iControl button enables the operator to control all servo adjustments very easily, with LED lights providing instant feedback, which simplifies machine control and operation. And the dies can be changed in a matter of seconds.” McGee added that other important features of MPS’ EF press are its reliability, robustness and flexibility. “A printer wants to focus on printing, not on the mechanics of the press,” said McGee. “The EF is a workhorse. With MPS’ robust engineering philosophy this press is designed to run all the time. This enables the operator to focus on his real job, and not how to keep the machine running. Our North American customers tell us they experience this reliability every day.” McGee says MPS’ introduction of its new EF press is the first phase in a strategy to establish a strong presence in North America. The company is also expanding its sales presence with more demonstration sites and service presence by expanding the geography of its service providers. The effort is being led by McGee, President of MPS America and Kees Nijenhuis, vice president of North American operations, MPS. They are joined by Eric Vandenberg, who is responsible for sales in the western United States. MPS America LLC is headquartered in Brookfield, Wis. North and Latin American MPS organizations join forces for Labelexpo Americas 2014 taking place September 9-11 in Chicago. Visitors can visit their joint display to learn more about the benefits of MPS’ flexo and offset printing presses.

Immediately after their exams, ten students were selected to participate in the Masterclass Flexible Packaging Prepress. The purpose of this unique class was to provide a more in-depth course complementing the education program. Jan De Roeck, Director Solutions Management at Esko, explains: “Esko has a long history of supporting schools and students, whether through providing software and hardware solutions or through hands-on trainings. The educational institutes provide a broad and basic training, which we, as an industry expert, believe we can complement with insights into the latest innovations and practical field experience. As one of the leading companies in the packaging market, it is our duty not only to invest in technology
development, but also to ensure that our knowledge is transferred, guaranteeing an inflow of new talent into the industry. This Masterclass fitted these objectives perfectly.”
Packaging: a growth market growing in importance Packaging remains a strong growth segment, being augmented by a growing volume of online purchases and home delivery, which expands the range of required packaging. It is also clear that to market a product successfully, creative designs and innovative printing techniques are vital. These were reasons enough for the educational advisory board at the Artevelde University College to recommend the Masterclass. “We put the proposal forward to our students in the final year of the Department of Graphical and Digital Media, and they were unanimously positive,” says Luk Bouters, Director of Education at Artevelde University College. “We are eager to collaborate with the business community, and this Masterclass offered great opportunities to do that. We worked intensively with the Esko experts and the course also included three on-site visits to packaging companies. These were, very exceptionally, organized by the managers themselves and covered not only the technical aspects but also

business and people management matters. This gave our students an excellent wellrounded view of the realities of the packaging supply chain. “ In preparation for the Masterclass, students could download a design of an existing flexible packaging from Esko’s packaging management website and personalize it with the Esko software. The designs linked the theoretical and practical lessons. Luc Berth, lecturer in prepress and workflow techniques at Artevelde University College, explains: “Our students performed a number of hands-on experiments with a diversity of Esko software applications, including prepress, 3D, workflow and collaboration tools. This enabled them to exercise their creativity, broaden their knowledge and take complete ownership of the workflow – all in a very practical and realistic manner. After going through the entire process, the results were colour-accurately printed on a proofing device.”
Real-world experience And the students? Simon Top, Graphic Technology student, was very enthusiastic, saying: “Topics such as packaging and flexo were addressed in some of our classes, but rather basically. This program allowed us to benefit from two weeks of delving further into the topic and using the latest Esko software. Added to that were the very interesting visits which rounded out a particularly instructive Masterclass. It truly made me very interested, and a job in packaging is what really appeals to me. “ Tom Maertens, Cross Media Design student, is also convinced: “I found the practical approach really instructive. The courses at school provide the theoretical basis. Now with this unique program, we were able to experience what is going on in a real working environment. I discovered how fascinating the packaging industry is. I still have a year to do at the college, but if I then apply for
a job in packaging, I will certainly have an edge over other applicants thanks to this Masterclass. “
Successful initiative Teachers, students, Esko staff and the Artevelde University College all rated the Masterclass initiative as a big success and one worth repeating. “We achieved our goals,” concludes De Roeck. “The students enjoyed a unique experience and succeeded in their task with flying colors. The Esko instructors were amazed about the speed at which they picked up everything. This strengthens our belief that offering complementary knowledge, supplemental to the academic curriculum, really helps young talented students to be ready for an interesting and promising career in the packaging industry.”

Tetra Pak launches Tetra Alsafe for ESL Tetra Pak has announced the launch of Tetra Alsafe for ESL production, an automated tank with constant temperature control that preserves product quality between processing and packaging. This innovation completes the company’s offer for production of extended shelf-life (ESL) products with full line quality control. Distributed under chilled conditions with a shelf life of up to 30 days, ESL products are gaining popularity among consumers and selling at a premium. They are also appreciated by retailers and producers for the convenience of planning due to the longer shelf life compared to traditional pasteurized products. However, production of ESL products requires careful handling, one of the challenges being the quality control between
processing and packaging. Tetra Alsafe for ESL production provides a solution to that challenge – it adds a continuous circular configuration to the filling line, enabling products to continue to circulate under refrigerated conditions in the event of an unplanned stoppage. This eliminates the risk of bacteria growth that can arise when the temperature of the product increases as it remains stationary during an unplanned stoppage.
Tetra Alsafe for ESL can be combined with a wide range of Tetra Pak ESL processing, buffering, filling, packaging and automation machines, providing customers with tailormade solutions to process white milk.
“ESL products open up a major growth opportunity for customers across the entire food and drinks industry. With the innovation of Tetra Alsafe for ESL, we are pleased to be the first company to support our customers with an integrated ESL production solution and full line quality assurance,” says Kresten Hjortsballe, Global Category Director Dairy at Tetra Pak.

Twelve UK hospitals implement Stratasys 3D printing solutions Stratasys, global provider of 3D printing and additive manufacturing solutions, has announced that UK medical 3D printing specialist, Replica 3DM, is using its Stratasys 3D Printers to support twelve National Health Service (NHS) hospitals in the validation of patient surgery prior to an operation. As a result, this is having a significant impact on the length of surgical procedures leading to substantial reductions in theatre costs. Replica 3DM’s Stratasys Objet24 and Objet30 Pro 3D Printers convert patient CT scans into physical 3D printed models that are used as surgical guides to test implants for size and fit pre-surgery. This includes re-bending of titanium implant plates to the patient’s exact specifications and preoperative investigations across maxillofacial, orthopedics, neurology, spinal and ears, nose and throat wards, to identify the correct procedure and improve outcome. The company also produces a number of cranioplasty models in which the unaffected side of the patient’s face is mirrored to produce a 3D printed reconstruction, prior to the fitting and placement of a titanium plate. Originally established as a 3D modeling department of Salisbury District Hospital, Replica 3DM has since extended its medical 3D printing capabilities to NHS hospitals across the UK, primarily offering its services to Trusts that do not have in-house access to 3D printers. “To us, 3D printing and the medical profession go hand-in-hand, particularly in the planning of complicated procedures,” explains Matthew Sherry, Managing Director and Founder of Replica 3DM. “A 3D model equips surgeons with a handson perspective which cannot be achieved by looking at a computer screen. They can easily rotate, inspect and analyze each
surgical procedure on a case-by-case basis, enabling them to pre-bend implants knowing that they will perfectly fit the patient. This is instrumental in eliminating potential problems during operations and can be used as a visual aid when explaining the surgical procedure to patients.” According to Matthew Sherry, the ability to use 3D printed models to pre-bend titanium implants has reduced surgery time significantly. “In the past, surgeons would depend on surgical experience to fit the plates during surgery. This could not only be quite costly, it may also crucially require longer patient anesthesia times,” he explains. “As demonstrated in a recent maxillofacial procedure at Salisbury District Hospital, the ability to pre-bend the titanium plate prior to surgery enabled surgeons to secure the perfect custom fit. This reduced the number of incisions required and overall theatre time, directly impacting the quality of patient care. “With theatre typically costing around £3,600 an hour, you can imagine how much we save NHS Trusts. In most cases, a model will pay for itself and helps with essential preoperative surgical planning.” Replica 3DM was introduced to Stratasys’ technology by UK reseller, SYS Systems. “With Stratasys Objet 3D Printers offering the best quality and accuracy for the medical
August 2014
“Opting to purchase two Stratasys 3D Printers has also enabled us to double our capacity and, with more and more Trusts requiring our services, I believe that we will see a 50% increase in client demands within the next few months,” Sherry concludes. Chris Baker, Stratasys Northern European Territory Manager, explains: “In an industry where precision is paramount, the ability to produce highly accurate 3D printed surgical models and guides that mimic the look and feel of titanium implants can both lower costs and reduce the time required for patients to be anesthetised. As a result, an increasing number of hospitals worldwide are integrating 3D printing into surgical planning procedures, which is having an immediate positive impact on the quality of patient treatment.”

World’s first HP high-speed Inkjet Corrugated Packaging Solution installed HP has announced that Obaly Morava, a.s. installed the world’s first HP High-speed Inkjet Corrugated Packaging Solution to digitally pre-print high-quality corrugated liners and meet demand for faster time to market. Obaly Morava, a privately-owned corrugated board producer based in the Czech Republic, provides a broad range of corrugated products to the Czech Republic and surrounding markets, including up to nine-layer corrugated board and boxes. The forward-looking company installed the press in June, becoming the first user of the new solution, which is based on the HP T400 Simplex Color Inkjet Web Press. “Market demands and the technology available are changing dramatically, and we are taking a fresh look at how to best meet our customers’ needs, such as individualisation and differentiation from the competition,” said Martin Rehorik, president, Obaly Morava. “I had a vision of what digital pre-print could potentially do for our business and reached out to HP to discuss the possibilities of its high-speed production inkjet technology for printing corrugated liners. HP helped turn that vision into a reality.” With the HP High-speed Inkjet Corrugated Packaging Solution, Obaly Morava digitally produces pre-printed corrugated top liners in back-to-back runs on the same substrate
rolls for maximum efficiency. It then transfers the pre-printed rolls to its corrugator to produce corrugated board for packaging applications.
Capitalising on new digital capabilities Adding value for new and existing customers, the HP High-speed Inkjet Corrugated Packaging Solution enables Obaly Morava to transition high-value jobs from analogue litho-lamination and flexographic processes to digital. This allows the company to take advantage of faster time to market, short and medium runs, versioning and reduced environmental footprint. Obaly Morava is optimising its finishing processes with a Harris & Bruno International near-line coater, ideal for aqueous priming and overcoating printed substrates. The company plans to eventually move this coater inline for priming and add a second coater for inline overcoating.
“By adopting the HP High-speed Inkjet Corrugated Packaging Solution, Obaly Morava is helping usher in a digital transformation in the corrugated market,” said Aurelio Maruggi, vice president and general manager, Inkjet High-speed Production Solutions Division, HP. “This innovative solution brings game-changing productivity, greater versatility, value-chain optimisation and more efficient production workflow to corrugators and represents the first of a series of production inkjet innovations from HP.” Printing on uncoated and coated corrugated substrates, premium offset media, and recycled and thin liners with speeds of up to 183 metres (600 feet) per minute, the HP High-speed Inkjet Corrugated Packaging Solution delivers faster turnaround times. The solution also includes new HP Priming Agent technology with four-colour HP A50 aqueous pigmented CMYK inks that provide exceptional print quality.

Market Trends throughout the European Label Supply Chain At its recent congress in Monaco, FINAT presented the annual 360° tour of the label industry, looking at underlying forces for the industry as a whole and for the association. Jules Lejeune, managing director of FINAT, reported on the labelstock statistics for 2013 and introduced the first findings of the new FINAT RADAR regular report and analysis of the European narrow-web market.
Features from the first FINAT RADAR Earlier this year FINAT announced the launch of RADAR, a member-exclusive half-yearly publication that will report trends and growth rates at all levels across the European narrow web supply chain. President Kurt Walker commented: “The FINAT RADAR gives members something they cannot find anywhere else. The publication offers FINAT membership a resource that benchmarks key metrics within each European region and market segment, in addition to providing comparisons between Europe and other major global regions. The RADAR is a comprehensive report, tying together converter, brand owner, material supplier and capital equipment trending and performance analysis.” In this recently released debut edition of RADAR, more than 50 FINAT label converters participated in a detailed survey focusing on sales and profit trends, production data and capital equipment procurement trends. Converters from every European region participated in the research to enable benchmarking analysis in each market.
Revenue growth In the Converter Survey, participants were asked to predict revenue growth over the course of the next six months for each major end-use sector they serve (food, beverage,

pharmaceuticals, consumer durables, etc.), in addition to providing their companies’ turnover growth for 2013. These data enable converter members to gauge their performance and projections against the European market as a whole, and against companies in their own specific region. In parallel to this approach, the RADAR Brand Owner Survey asked companies to project growth and/or contraction rates for their label purchases over the next year. This exercise is essential in order to cross reference converter projected growth rates with what brand owners are predicting label procurement increases will be, in order to calculate growth rates for the market that are as close as possible to what the future will actually deliver. The table below indicates average growth rates from both converters and brand owners that were surveyed for the first edition of the report.
In addition to historical and projected growth rates, the debut edition of RADAR includes both a European Labelstock Index and a European Conventional Press Index. Both indices aggregate data from FINAT labelstock and conventional press member suppliers to show quarter-over-quarter growth and/or contraction rates in each sector. Each edition of the report will feature these indices, offering FINAT members access to a quarterly index that tracks labelstock growth and press sales.
The publication will also feature special coverage of issues pertinent to the changing dynamic of the European label converting marketplace. For the first edition of the report, brand owners were surveyed regarding their companies’ label sourcing trends and whether they were considering replacing

FINAT labelstock statistics At the FINAT congress, Jules Lejeune documented labelstock demand in Europe for 1996 to 2013 showing that market volume had doubled in the last one and a half decade to just over 6 billion square meters. In 2013, overall demand grew by 3.5% over prior year - an increase that was mostly achieved in the second half of the year, with non-paper (film) labelstocks growing at 5.9% and paper stocks at 3.3%

Western European sourcing channels with other regions. Every brand owner was asked this question and the analysis of the aggregated results is a provocative one. Within the next 12 months, more than 50% of surveyed brand owners indicated that their companies were seriously considering the re-sourcing of some, or all, of the labels currently sourced from Western Europe, from other regions.
Regionally, the countries to the east of Europe evidenced the greatest growth in 2013 over 2012 at 6.9%, with all other regions showing modest growth. The outlook for 2014 is positive, based on Q1 year-on-year results, both in terms of material grades and by region.
Four forces Model Jules Lejeune defined the four forces that drive the label industry: the end-use market drivers, technology innovation, sustainability and corporate drivers. “Together these four forces impact the label industry as they are the subject of initiatives and activities that are today within the remit of FINAT, making the association’s relevance to its membership higher than ever before,” he concluded.

Converflex in close synergy with IPACK-IMA starting from 2015 Next year will mark a promising new life for Converflex, taking place in close synergy with IPACK-IMA as part of the great 2015 event scheduled from May 19th to 23rd at Fieramilano. Converting technologies are increasingly packaging-oriented. As a result, Centrexpo Spa, the organizer of the exhibition, has come up with a strategic combination. IPACK-IMA participants include converting technology users; in addition, interest in converting and package printing technology is increasingly high across the target industries, both food and non-food. In the next edition, these advantages will be enhanced by the conjunction with the EXPO 2015.
The historic combination with Grafitalia is no more. This change was caused by two main factors: on one hand, the economic and technological performance of the industries targeted by Converflex is increasingly diverging from Grafitalia’s; on the other hand, converting and packaging are
complimentary – with the latter acting as the main driving force – and printing technology is increasingly package printing-oriented. The news was announced by Centrexpo CEO Guido Corbella in his speech during the annual Federgrafica assembly. “We chose to completely renew the exhibition – explained Corbella – in response to the market’s specific demand for technology and consistently with the philosophy of the Centrexpo-IPACK-IMA group to produce useful exhibitions designed around the needs of exhibitors and users”. Ever since 1981 Converflex was the very first show spanning across the full range of converting technology (converting-package printing-labelling) and starting global trends. Very recently package printing has been captivating the interest of even the largest shows in the graphic design industry. The showcase will also include digital printing technology, which is increasingly oriented to the packaging industry as a high growth-rate target market as opposed to graphic arts, which are currently severely affected by the global crisis.
Grafitalia next edition postponed to 2017 Grafitalia exhibition reschedules the next edition, initially planned for next year, to 2017. The news was announced by Guido Corbella, CEO of Centrexpo – the company producing Grafitalia – in his speech during the Federgrafica assembly. “The 2015 edition of Grafitalia is postponed to a more favourable time for the industries it targets. This decision is approved by industry associations including Assografici (the Italian Printing and Paper Converting Industries Association) and Argi (the Association of Italian Agents and Distributors of Machinery, Systems and Products for the Graphic Industry). However, Centreexpo will keep the industry continuously updated on the latest developments. It has decided to keep the interest high by organizing the “Grafitalia days”: events/debates dealing with specific topics of current interest for the industry. The exhibition’s steering committee is already working on the calendar and the first “Grafitalia days” will take place before the end of 2014.
Flint Group launches new plate Flint Group Flexographic Products has further improved its innovative nyloflex NExT exposure technology – a simple way of producing flat top dots and surface screenings – with nyloflex NEF Digital, new high durometer plate for printing of flexible packaging and labels. Developed for the efficient creation of flat top dots and an excellent reproduction of surface screenings, the new plate shows an outstanding quality in highlight areas due to a stable reproduction of the finest highlights and smooth vignettes. It allows for a reduced bump-up, while reaching the first tonal values of e.g. 0.8 to 1.2% at 60 L/cm (152 lpi), hence increasing the image contrast. The ink laydown can be significantly improved and a high solid ink density achieved when surface screens are applied. The result is a brilliant print performance on film, foil and coated paper substrates.
The short exposure and quick washout times enhance the productivity of plate processing. The new printing plate enables one to exploit the full potential of the nyloflex NExT exposure technology. Flat top dots are less impression sensitive, enabling less dot gain variances on press. With the nyloflex NExT exposure technology, no additional processing steps, such as lamination, or additional auxiliaries (like nitrogen supply or film materials) are required, thus making it a more cost effective option. Although the nyloflex NEF Digital plate is especially designed for high-output UV LED exposure, it can also be exposed with regular tube light units. When the nyloflex NEF Digital plate is exposed with conventional tube light: the new plate is able to reproduce flat top dots with surface screening patterns. These screens enable one to achieve a more even ink lay down than reached when regular
digital plates are used. In addition, nyloflex NEF Digital plates require a lower bump up, which allows for the increase of grey levels in printing and the capability to increase the image contrast as compared to regular digital plates in the market. The new photopolymer printing plate, nyloflex NEF Digital, will be available to the market in the thicknesses of 114 (.045”) and 170 (.067”) in the beginning of August 2014.

QuadTech and Gallus join hands QuadTech’s SpectralCam systems to enable Gallus press owners to reduce waste, increase productivity and achieve rapid ROI. QuadTech announced a new partnership with the Gallus Group, to provide QuadTech closed-loop colour control and colour measurement systems for its offset, flexo and gravure presses. Utlizing QuadTech technology, Gallus customers can now quicken make-ready and offer ultimate print quality and productivity, with in-line colour management. With a typical ROI of less than two years, QuadTech colour control systems are now an essential consideration for many web printers looking to meet changing customer requirements and demands for high colour standards, with consistent repeatability from run-to-run and site-to-site. Dr. Thomas Weber, Supplier Relationship Management at Gallus comments, “Gallus has vast market experience and the widest customer base in the label printing industry. However, we recognized the opportunity to partner with QuadTech to provide our
customers with state-of-the-art spectral colour measurement and colour control systems, with the automation to drive further reduction in make-readies and savings in valuable substrate waste.” Designed for offset printers, the QuadTech Color Control System with SpectralCam provides automated, in-line, closed-loop colour control. On-the-fly and at full press speeds, it adjusts ink keys to maintain specified colour targets, preventing avoidable waste and operator inaccuracies. Flexo and gravure printers can also benefit from the QuadTech Color Measurement System with SpectralCam, which enables in-line monitoring of all packaging substrates, including challenging translucent, transparent and reflective films. Colour variations are sent to the operator in real-time to change colour specifications, eliminating press stoppages and the manual process of removing sections of the web to measure colour. The ability to control colour on problematic substrates such as films has been a significant objective for the printing industry. QuadTech has been able to solve this, by utilizing its web stabilizer to remove common issues of web movement and substrate corrugation. The QuadTech web stabilizer measures substrates over a certified BCRA ceramic tile, for a constant known backing,
and momentarily stabilizes a small surface area of the substrate with a high pressure vacuum. This enables accurate color measurement on very thin, transparent and translucent films - ideal for self-adhesive labels, monofoil labels, wet-glue and laminates. Stephan Doppelhammer, QuadTech Market Manager for Packaging, says, “Gallus and QuadTech are perfectly aligned in the drive to create solutions that maximize customer benefits and profitability. We are delighted to offer a faster way for Gallus customers to achieve and maintain perfect colour, for guaranteed high-quality output, optimal performance, cost savings and fast ROI.” QuadTech introduced the technology to the Gallus’s worldwide sales force during the world sales meeting and will showcase the SpectralCam systems at Gallus Innovation Days, September 23rd-25th 2014.

Drink Technology India: experts discuss the future of the Indian beverage and food market Roundtable Talk for the first time at drink technology India 2014 drink technology India again has a lot more to offer this year in addition to the presentations of exhibitors. In addition to the exhibitor forum, the dti Roundtable Talk is taking place for the first time, a panel discussion with leading manufacturers from the Indian beverage and food industry. Both supporting programs will deal with issues that are relevant for the future of the Indian beverage and food industry.
dti Roundtable Talk The dti panel discussion on Friday, 26 September, is the ideal supplement to the dti exhibitor forum. While customised solutions for the Indian market will be presented in the forum, the Roundtable Talk will deal with the future of the beverage and food industry in India. The panel discussion will be chaired by Rajesh Nath, President of VDMA (German Engineering Federation) India, and Sumit Sharma, VDMA Regional Manager (North) India. The participants in the roundtable are: Chandra Mohan Gupta, Coca Cola India; K. Ganesh, Bisleri International; Prabodh Halde, Marico; Subba Bangera, ActiveSolutions; and Dr. Binoid K. Martin, FlavorActiV. The panel discussion will provide an outlook of the beverage and food industry in India until 2020 and the chance to discuss case studies with recognised experts. Consequently, all participants will have the chance to share their experiences and learn from each other. Mr. Ganesh is providing one of the discussion points, which deals with the growing drinking water market in India: “The bottled water industry in India witnessed a boom in the late 1990s soon after Bisleri launched its packaged drinking water in the country. This significant growth was fuelled by a surge in advertising by the industry players that ‘bottled water was pure and healthy’. Today,
with a rise in health awareness, poor quality of tap water, and the ease of availability of bottled water, the per capita consumption of bottled water in India is on the increase.” According to Mr. Bangera, another exciting discussion topic is the Indian packaging market: “India will move from everything consumed loose to at least 40% packaged form in next 20 years. The combined effect of policy change, health care initiatives and changes in habits and travelling will bring about these changes. The changes will be seen in rural areas much faster, and it will be seen across the economic front.”
dti Exhibitor Forum What are the chances for further development in the Indian beverage and food industry, both in the technological sector as well as in the areas of packaging and education/training? The dti exhibitor forum is going to provide answers to this question. The program of talks is composed of six topic blocks, which illuminate the important aspects of the beverage and food industry. For example, Dr. Roland Folz, Director Technology & Innovation Food & Beverage at Pentair Haffmans, will present the latest developments and trends in the Indian beer and beverage market in his talk “Holistic R&D approach of a global company, shaping the brewing & beverage future”. Amos Lopez, Area Product Manager at KHS Corpoplast, will provide an overview of current achievements in aseptic bottling in his talk “Preformsterilization: Reliable protection for the sterile manufacture and filling of your PET bottles”. It is a question of innovations in the milk industry in the talk “Krones solutions for milk filling and processing” held by Stefan Kraus, Product Manager Aseptic Filling at Krones. Annamitra Mahanty, Senior Executive and Pratish Sheth, Marketing Manager, both at Siemens, will speak about “Plant-wideautomation for the dairy industry / Integrated filling & packaging lines for reduced life cycle costs”.

Triple advantage TechNova AniKleen Paste Yet another productivity enhancing product has been introduced by TechNova. AniKleen Paste, the only Anilox Roller Cleaner manufactured in India that offer printers a triple advantage of high-speed, efficient cleaning, and low cost-in-use. Anilox Rollers are an important component of the press, the cleanliness of which directly impacts print quality and consistency. Inspite of this, most printers find it difficult to maintain the right level of cleanliness of Anilox Rollers primarily due to the unavailability of efficient and cost-effective cleaners. In the long run, improper cleaning and maintenance of Anilox Rollers leads
to accumulation of dried OPV deposits in its cells, which adversely impacts the print consistency and quality. TechNova’s AniKleen Paste is an ideal solution to help clean Anilox Rollers. It can be used on or off the machine and works with all types of Anilox rollers. Richard Pinto, Business Development Manager - Chemicals, TechNova states, “AniKleen Paste offers printers an unprecedented triple advantage, with its fast-action and superior cleaning at a very reasonable cost.”
