FROM THE EDITORS’ DESK Dear Readers, With official 11,239 record-breaking pan India visitor attendance, PrintExpo 2016 generated an expected 150 crore business. The region’s largest print exhibition had a resounding success with trade visitors extremely delighted with the technology on display. PrintExpo had a great showcase of the latest in printing, print finishing, pre-press, consumables and converting at the Chennai Trade Centre, Chennai, from 12-14 August 2016. Over 93% Exhibitors expressed immense satisfaction with their participation at the PrintExpo 2016. At the Eight Edition, 137 exhibitors comprising of manufacturers, resellers, distributors and agents of printing presses, post print and print finishing machines and equipment, pre-press automation, workflow, design software and processes, converting equipment exhibited cutting-edge technology. Another major upcoming industry event is WAN-IFRA India 2016 Conference – the 24th annual conference in South Asia to be held on 21-22 September in Kolkata. The event is the meeting point of all the newspaper publishers in the South Asia region. The three parallel tracks of the conference are the Newsroom Summit, Printing Summit and Cross-media Advertising Summit. The conference will discuss the business and technology challenges and provide a direction into the future of the news publishing industry in the region. The conference draws much significance in the backdrop of the digital media revolution facing the South Asian news publishing industry in one hand and the challenge of managing the growth of print media business on the other hand. The event will have foyer info tables for suppliers to make their presence and interact with publishers during conference. The Internet and World Wide Web have opened up new opportunities for printing, but new challenges too. Simon Eccles – a print industry and digital printing expert – explores E-commerce, automation and cloud for print in his extensive article. On the installation front, Bharat Photostat is targeting to capture a larger market share with their recent addition, Xerox ColorPress 1000i. The press installed at the Naraina facility of Bharat in January this year, has already produced 3 lakh prints and generated savings of up to 40% in runs. Singapore Press Holdings, in a Southeast Asia first, has introduced a game changing innovative printing technology of Kodak Prosper at its facility. With the addition of variable data, the solution helps to improve interaction between the newspaper and readers. Prosper Inkjet Heads now enable the publisher to print variable data on each copy of newspaper. In another interesting development, CNN has launched CNN AIR – a special division with which it will be using drones (UAVs) to gather news from heights and angles which were previously improbable. Find the details in the inside pages along with other news, stories and regulars.

KMPA Members discuss current industry topics at Cochin meeting “The impact of GST on the print industry is still vague. We will have to wait for the GST draft guidelines and the substantive stand of our state government in its successful implementation. The effect of the so-called game-changer will be known only after it is put to practice,” believes MV Shreyams Kumar, Director of Mathrubhumi Group. Kerala is one of those states that have rich printing tradition. The Printing Industry is represented by the Kerala Master Printers Association (KMPA). The Association is dedicated towards growth of the industry through active participation in resolving day to day issues of the industry and its people. PRESSIdeas got an opportunity to interact with the members of KMPA at a recent meeting. Various issues were discussed during the no-holds-barred interactive session that had a healthy and lively environment. The key topic being the recent passing of GST and its implications on the Printing Industry in general and the printer in particular. Kerala is a state that consumes almost all of the printed products it produces – almost 99% of the total print products. GST, which largely addresses the difference in rates of various taxes across states, should be of a little consequence for the likes of print industry in Kerala that seldom sells to other states.
“There has been an upsurge in import of post press equipments in the state. Prepress is already in an advanced state and the import of new Printing machines and second hand Post Press machines has amazingly increased in the last three years.”
Key Notes : > Kerala consumes most of the print products produced in the state. > The impact of GST on the Print Industry. > Changes in the state’s printing scene over the last three years.

The KMPA members at the Cochin meeting told that the existing system of billing is at 2% CST against C Form. The printer has to bear this 2%, whereas with GST, this will get eliminated and, instead of a producer, the final consumer will get taxed.
“GST would bring in a level playing field which would provide an impetus to the industry to compete and eventually will encourage healthier competition in the market,” says Mr.G Venugopal of Sterling Printers. Another reputed printer and Vice President of the Association, Mr.R Gopakumar was of the opinion that this would be an impediment to the credit facilities being enjoyed by the printers. “For example, suppose the GST is finally fixed at 18%, a paper company will be billing at 18% to keep it in its godown in the state. It will make it impossible for the company to provide credit limits to customers because he will have to pay the tax in advance,” he explains. Mr.O. Venugopal of Anaswara, however adds, “The implementation of GST would actually create a level playing field for printers across the states. While a printer would be curtailed by logistics, the benefits of elimination of various taxes by states will boost the business prospects in other states.” He was also of the view that it is an opportune time for printers to increase the printing rates. “Since it is a matter of common knowledge today that GST would increase the prices of commodities on a general basis, the time is just right to increase rates of print,” he

suggests. We have to wait and watch which commodities come in this category and those getting into the negative list to remain unaffected by the GST effect. It becomes all the more important because print has reduced the rates over the years even though the costs of inputs have increased. Clearly, the level of pricing in the industry is at a rather unsustainable point and needs to be rectified soon and this is the right time to do it,” he emphasized. Rampant corruption in government departments is another area of concern for the survival of the printing industry. This too is expected to be checked by GST implementation. According to the printers present at the meeting, it was clear that labour cost is a matter of concern not only for the Kerala Print Industry but also industry in general and with proposals like fixing minimum wages at Rs.18000, things will only be turning bad. The recent notification from the state government is being seen as a deterrent for expansion of printers especially startups. Today a trainer 4-colour machine operator in the state expects to get between Rs.15,000 – Rs.25,000 pm as salary. The printers generally agreed that the issue of labour unrest and work hour loss due to strikes has
decreased substantially over the years. Mr. K.P. Uthup (Babu) of Colortone Process expressed his concerns about the neglect of the Print Industry by successive governments. “Lack of support from the government to one of the biggest contributors in the economy of the country is a major concern which needs to be addressed collectively by all in the industry. Taxes imposed by government ought to be paid back too as service to the industry and society,” he asserted. The customer in Kerala is also being catered to by the neighbouring Bangalore (for big quantity quality prints), Sivakasi (when faster delivery times is a priority), as well as Chennai. “Over the years, this has been
the trend followed by printing customers in Kerala. This is mainly because there are just a few high quality printers who are capable of printing big quantities and keep delivery schedules as well,” says Venugopal. “With the number of new machines arriving in the state over the last three years, production capabilities are now gradually changing. Apart from the quality, quantity aspect is also being addressed to,” he adds. “There also has been an upsurge in import of post press equipments by the printers in the state. Prepress is already in an advanced state and the import of new Printing machines and second hand Post Press machines has amazingly increased in the last three years,” according to Mr.M. Nadir owning a binding house in Cochin.
GMG launches matte OBA proofing media GMG, developer of high-end colour management and proofing solutions, announces the launch of GMG ProofMedia studio OBA matte 150. This is GMG’s first matte surface proofing media containing high Optical Brightening Agents (OBAs). It has been developed for highly accurate proofing and the closest visual match of commonly used uncoated production papers. In the past, it was problematic for design agencies, pre-press and print companies to deliver a visual match between proofs and prints, even with good colorimetric measurement, as matte proofing media contains no or too little fluorescence. This issue can be solved with GMG’s new high OBA contained matte 150 media. Featuring fluorescent levels comparable to popular production papers, proofs printed on GMG ProofMedia studio OBA matte 150 deliver good visual matches to final production. This includes the FOGRA52 printing condition.

If the selected combination matched the sports editor’s choice, the winner had the opportunity to win tickets to watch the Championship semi-finals live.
Know the World at a Glimpse uses the variable printing technology to print special advertising with lucky draw passwords on ZaobaoNow. The password is unique in every copy of the newspaper.
The printing production manager, K Seharan, a veteran with 27 years of newspaper printing experience, says: “It would have been impossible to print unique content on so many copies without Kodak’s Prosper Imprinting Systems. Previously we had to insert additional pages into the newspaper manually, which is time-consuming and labourintensive. But Kodak’s inkjet heads have not only helped us to streamline operations by being more productive, but also opened up a new set of possibilities altogether. The new solution doesn’t sacrifice newspaper printing processes or speed. More than 1,000,000 copies are printed efficiently daily to meet the rigorous demand of newspaper deadline.”
Readers enjoy a new experience of interaction By installing Kodak Prosper S-Series Imprinting Heads on the original printing press, the solution prints variable data, including texts, graphics, bar codes and QR codes in black or red on the specified area of each piece of newspaper, without shutting down the press or changing plates. It means that the newspaper and advertisers are able to use this solution to produce personalized content, such as unique passwords for lucky draws, coupons and promotions for every reader. According to SPH, the communication between the brand owners and reader will be more efficient and flexible. In addition, the readers will enjoy a new experience of interaction. Cai Guoling, the executive vice president and chief manager of marketing, SPH said: “Leveraging the new technology, the brand owners can deliver different promotion information to readers at the same day. It helps to improve the effectiveness of communication and interaction of 1: 1, resulting in a successful promotion”. The luck draw, Know the World at a Glimpse, is a perfect application of variable printing technology. The special advertising with lucky draw password was printed on ZaobaoNow through the week. The password is unique in every copy of the newspaper. Carlsberg partnered with The New Paper in this year’s European Football Championship. With variable print technology, readers were able to participate in similar

Revenue and earnings on track A rise of 30% in revenue compared to 2015, solid capacity utilisation at KBA’s facilities and cost savings from the restructuring programme completed at the start of the year had a positive impact on earnings after six months despite high trade show and development costs. EBIT improved to euro20.7m compared to the prior-year loss of –euro8.3m.
Continued solid net liquidity The increase in inventories for the sales volume anticipated in the second half of 2016 and the rise in receivables following higher deliveries strained the net inflow of funds. Excluding apprentices, trainees, employees exempted from their duties and staff on phased retirement
schemes the group workforce sank to 4,719.
Revenue and earnings targets raised for 2016 KBA’s Sheetfed segment which has an outstanding footing in packaging printing is on track to reach its revenue and earnings targets for 2016. The management board is targeting a profit in its Digital & Web segment by the end of the financial year. In the Special segment KBA anticipates clear growth with a significant earnings improvement in 2016. The security business almost doubled order intake compared to 2015. Incoming orders from the flexible packaging printing and hollow glass container decoration markets also rose by two digits. The KBA management board is targeting a rise in group revenue above its initial planning to between euro1.1 and euro1.2bn as well as an increase in the EBT margin to around 4%.

CNN launches CNN AIR Unmanned Aerial Systems unit for aerial imagery and reporting across networks
As the news industry leader in the development of technology used in newsgathering, CNN has launched CNN Aerial Imagery and Reporting (CNN AIR). For the first time in the company’s history, CNN will have a designated Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) unit with two full-time UAS operators to fully integrate aerial imagery and reporting across all CNN networks and platforms, along with Turner Broadcasting and Time Warner entities. “CNN’s cutting-edge development of technology to enhance the way we tell stories is a part of our DNA,” said Terence Burke, Senior Vice President of National News. “We are proud to continue the tradition with CNN AIR, and to establish a unit that will expand our technological capabilities for newsgathering.” CNN has been a leader in integrating this new technology into its operations, forming the first media-related research partnership with the Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) and entering into a direct research agreement with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). In 2015, CNN was selected by the FAA as one of the first three industry “Pathfinders” to develop safe uses of UAS in newsgathering. CNN has shared data and research that has helped formulate
a framework for various types of UAS to be safely integrated into the national air space and continues to work to expand the safe and legal operation of UAS in newsgathering. CNN has utilized UAS to provide understanding and context, enhanced storytelling and production value, led by Greg Agvent, Senior Director of National Newsgathering Technology. CNN’s deployment of UAS have demonstrated the breadth of the flooding in Louisiana and the water crisis in Flint, Michigan. They have also been utilized at the Republican and Democratic presidential nominating conventions, CNN presidential primary debates and town halls, and to enhance storytelling across CNN’s platforms, including the 50th anniversary of the civil rights march on the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama, and Anderson Cooper’s coverage of the 10th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. CNN Worldwide is a portfolio of two dozen news and information services across cable, satellite, radio, wireless devices and the Internet in more than 200 countries and territories worldwide. It is the most widely distributed news channel reaching more than 320 million households; and CNN Digital is a top network for online news, mobile
news and social media. CNN is a division of Turner Broadcasting System, a Time Warner Company. The launch of the drone division opens the gates for journalists to cover news from new heights and angles enabled by cameras atop these aerial vehicles. The Federal Aviation Administration, after much wait, has recently released guidelines allowing journalists to operate drones after passing a test. Now, only time can tell whether the drones will enhance the threat to public safety or privacy already being exposed to various other technological invasions. Being a pioneer, CNN will certainly have an edge over competition even as many others are yet to decide on the suitability of the technology. It is also worth watching how a drone enabled photojournalist matches the existing requirements of time tested professional imagery. It’s too early to measure the implications of limitation of flying space as other competitors and industries too seek possibilities of benefits from this technology. For general acceptability of the technology, there are many considerations like people’s safety, privacy, journalistic ethics, possibilities of accidents or sabotage etc. Let’s hope it goes right in the direction of improvement of human life.

Gawker.com is ending operations After nearly fourteen years of operation, Gawker.com is shutting down. The decision to close Gawker comes days after Univision successfully bid $135 million for Gawker Media’s six other websites, and three months after the Silicon Valley billionaire Peter Thiel revealed his clandestine legal campaign against the company. Nick Denton, the company’s outgoing CEO, informed current staffers of the site’s fate recently, just hours before a bankruptcy court in Manhattan will decide whether to approve Univision’s bid for Gawker Media’s other assets. Staffers will soon be assigned to other editorial roles, either at one of the other six sites or elsewhere within Univision. Near-term plans for Gawker.com’s coverage, as well as the site’s archives, have not yet been finalized.

US Vice President urged to prioritize press freedom on Turkey visit
Two leading media organizations representing news organizations around the world – the Newspaper Association of America (NAA) and the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WANIFRA) – wrote to the US Vice President Joseph Biden urging him, on his recent visit to Ankara, Turkey on August 24, to raise with the Turkish government the increasing problem of journalists becoming a target for state repression. They also sought immediate release of the journalists jailed or awaiting trial for carrying out their professional duties. “We encourage Vice President Biden to call on the democratically elected Turkish government to actively uphold the fundamental human right of freedom of expression and to reinstate press freedoms for the benefit of current and future generations,” said NAA President and CEO David Chavern. For many years, Turkey has had more free-expression cases filed against it in the European Court of Human Rights than any other signatory to the convention.
Despite repeated attempts by international press organizations to raise concerns with the Turkish authorities and encourage a dialogue, these free press issues have been unaddressed. WAN-IFRA President Tomas Brunegård stated, “We are dismayed by the incessant pressure our Turkish colleagues have been facing and stand shoulder to shoulder with the media community in this time of crisis. The Turkish state is responsible for safeguarding the freedom of the press yet is so far failing to meet its international obligations in this regard. Instead, journalists and the media have become the victims of a deliberate effort to silence critical opinion that we condemn in the strongest possible terms.” Some prominent journalists critical of the government have been arrested and imprisoned, accused of espionage and treason with the prospect of lengthy sentences if convicted. Since July’s failed coup, the problem has intensified, with many journalists, editors and media owners living in fear of reprisal. “A free press, in Turkey or anywhere else, is a fundamental cornerstone for a developed, democratic and peaceful society,” stated Marcelo Rech, President of the WAN-IFRA World Editors Forum. “As such, the editors around the world expect respect for the integrity of their colleagues under any circumstances.” Specifically, the letter asks Vice President Biden to seek assurances that the Turkish government will respect the independence of the press and the right of the Turkish media to operate free from harassment and intervention; reinstate ownership to independent media outlets that have been shut down by the government and its
supporters; and recognize its responsibilities and obligations to freedom of expression under the international covenants to which Turkey is a signatory. Chavern adds, “Above all, we ask that Turkey prioritize journalists’ safety.” Newspaper Association of America is a nonprofit organization representing nearly 2,000 newspapers and their multiplatform businesses in the United States and Canada. The World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WAN-IFRA), based in Paris and Frankfurt with regional offices in Chennai, Singapore and Mexico, is the global organization for the world’s newspapers and news publishers, with formal representative status at the United Nations, UNESCO and the Council of Europe. The organization represents more than 18,000 print and online publications and serves over 3,000 member companies in more than 120 countries. Its mission is to defend and promote press freedom and help independent news publishing companies to succeed in their transformation process, increase their business, and perform their crucial role in open societies.

World News Media Congress in Durban leads new initiatives for WAN-IFRA in Africa
The World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WAN-IFRA) will hold its 69th World News Media Congress, 24th World Editors Forum, and 27th World Advertising Forum in Durban, South Africa, from 7th to 9th June 2017. It will be only the second time the World News Media Congress has come to the African continent following the success of the Cape Town event in 2007. The Congress is part of a broader plan to expand activities in Africa and connect with colleagues who are leading the media transformation across the continent.
In January of this year, the Women In News (WIN) initiative, a highly regarded leadership programme for women media professionals, began its sixth year on the continent. Bringing together middle and senior managers from newspapers in Botswana, Kenya, Malawi, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe, as well as a team of coaches and mentors from local and international markets, the programme empowers women journalists and editors to contribute to the editorial agenda and progress to greater levels of decision-making within their media.
Vincent Peyrègne, CEO of WAN-IFRA, said: “We are thrilled to be bringing the Congress back to Africa. Our local partners are outlining groundbreaking support for our ambitious plans and Durban - an awardwinning city in one of the most attractive tourist destinations in South Africa – is the ideal venue. News publishing companies in South Africa are demonstrating a real thirst for innovation that we will have a taste of during our upcoming Digital Media Africa conference in September 2016. This will be a fantastic kick-start in preparation for the Congress next year.”
The goal of the project, which is supported by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) and the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is to assist women media professionals who are under-represented in top management positions to excel in their careers.
The events - to be held in Johannesburg in September 2016 and Durban in 2017 - are part of a broader expansion of WAN-IFRA’s activities in Africa.
The initiative also engages the media industry at the global level to sensitize and promote change from within, and forms part of WAN-IFRA’s Gender and Media Freedom Strategy. The strategy combines WAN-IFRA’s global experience in running advocacy and development initiatives in support of media freedom and democracy with the first-hand knowledge of the impact gender-based programmes can have on media and society. More than 1,000 publishers, chief editors, managing directors, CEOs and other senior news publishing executives are expected to attend the 69th World News Media Congress, the 24th World Editors Forum and the 27th World Advertising Forum in Durban. Next year’s annual global meeting of the world’s press will include sessions on strategy,

revenue, and editorial development, research and innovation, as well as issues related to small and mid-sized publishers. The World News media Congress will also bring hundreds of participants from WAN-IFRA’s Media Freedom programmes together with Congress delegates for an exclusive international summit focussing on gender in the news industry. WAN-IFRA’s Africa Media Freedom Committee, funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark under the Strengthening Media and Society programme, will also direct advocacy actions and targeted campaigns highlighting press freedom issues on the continent in the lead up to, and during Congress. Other new features for the World News media Congress 2017 will include a thoughtful analysis of the World News Media Outlook, a global industry survey providing news executives with the cutting-edge intelligence needed to benchmark company performance and to help devise innovative strategies to ensure future business success. The Outlook, together with the World Press Trends annual report, help to better understand and quantify the news industry’s responses to the challenges faced. Registration for the 69th World News Media Congress in Durban, from 7th to 9th June 2017 is now open at WAN-IFRA website. The organisers have offered two free nights at the 5-Star Beverly Hills Hotel in Durban for participants who sign-up early. After Johannesburg, the Durban Metropolitan Area ranks second among the most populous urban areas in South Africa,

almost equal to Cape Town. It is also the second most important manufacturing hub in South Africa after Johannesburg. Durban is famous for being the busiest port in South Africa. It is also seen as one of the major centres of tourism because of the city’s warm subtropical climate and extensive beaches. With a population of almost 3,5 million people, Durban also the main port city for South Africa accounting 65% of all imports and exports into the country. South Africa is the continent’s major media player, and its broadcasters and press reflect the diversity of its people. The printed press is dominated by four major companies: Times Media, Independent News and Media, Media24 and Caxton/CTP. Among the private press can be mentioned the Mail & Guardian, the City Press, the Sunday Times and the online newspaper Daily Maverick. The use of mobile phones to access the internet is driving the growth in web access. According to Internetworldstats, South Africa has a vibrant mobile market that has seen rapid uptake of GSM since competition was introduced to the sector more than 10 years ago. With market penetration exceeding 70%, the three network operators are increasingly forced to find innovative ways of distinguishing themselves from the competition in order to gain and retain customers. The annual IAB SA Internet Advertising Revenue Report, conducted by PwC, shows a growth of 15% in online advertising revenue from 2013 to 2014. This growth, at a rate of more than three times the current CPI, provides a clear indication of the rapid growth of both the size and importance of the digital marketing industry in South Africa. Online advertising revenues rose from R452 million to R566 million, while search Internet advertising revenues surged to R865 million, up from R680 million. The estimated total revenue of the online advertising market in 2014 is estimated at R1.5 billion.
A multitude of large, often international newspaper and magazine publishers from all over the globe produce an abundance of world-famous media brands. They constantly adjust their strategies to adapt to the changing realities in the industry and master the challenges of the modern publishing world by using state-of-the art technologies. But the publishing universe is much larger than just the major brands. Many small and medium-size publishers worldwide – most of them unknown – are creating an impressive array of attractive publications. With a global survey, WoodWing investigates the status of these publishers, as well as their strategies and needs. Along with world-famous magazine and newspaper titles, readers can select their preferred publications from a variety of categories, including city and regional magazines, publications covering niche topics and industry magazines. The small and mid-size publishers of these publications must master the challenges of the modern publishing world just like the large media houses, aiming to improve efficiency and to ensure competitiveness. WoodWing’s global survey aims to examine the situation of the publishers in the small and medium business sector (SMB): the nature of their businesses, the challenges they face, and their needs and strategies. WoodWing’s anonymous survey asks about the status of these publications and their audiences; their social, mobile and Cloud strategies; their key business challenges and
pain points; their production environments and more.
SMB publishers are hidden champions “Small and medium publishers are the hidden champions of the publishing industry. They produce highly attractive publications that find and inspire their readers,” said Roel-Jan Mouw, CEO of WoodWing Software. “Nevertheless, these publishers do not attract the attention they deserve. With our global survey, we want to shed light on this segment of the publishing industry and to give SMB publishers a platform to share their experiences and strategies.” The questionnaire is available at WoodWing website and the deadline to participate is Oct. 14. Among all participants, WoodWing will give away one Apple TV. The results of the study will be published during the fourth quarter and will be sent to all participants.

Bharat Photostat: Targeting to capture a larger market share with Xerox ColorPress 1000i Abhishek attributes the company’s achievement to their earlier Xerox DocuColor 12 and Xerox Sapida machines and eyes larger market share with their recent Xerox 1000i. Mr. SK Nangia established Bharat Photostat in 1994. The first machine was a Toshiba photocopy telefax machine, which was imported to meet the Photostat and fax demand of customers. The company had been into export business of threads. With Mr. SK Nangia’s son Abhishek Nangia joining the business in 1998, Bharat Photostat made Digital Printing their key focus area and would invest heavily in Digital equipment down the years. “Xerox has been a key partner and family for us from the very beginning,” says Abhishek. “Our relationship with the company goes far back from the first day – the first digital machine that we purchased was the Xerox DocuColor 12.” The DC12 served Bharat Photostat for six long years and provided them a perfect launch pad in the expanding digital arena. “After DC12, we brought in Xerox Sapida which helped us to grow 20X times,” adds Abhishek.
The digital printing segment is growing at a good rate in India. There is a continued increase in demand for short runs, creative colour and design. For all these things Xerox ColorPress 1000i comes in handy for Bharat Photostat.
Key Notes : > Bharat Photostat installs a Xerox ColorPress 1000i at its Naraina shop. > Carries out 3 lakh prints on it since installation. > Generates savings of up to 40% in runs.

Abhishek believes that there lies an opportunity for paper printing in each industry. Likewise, primarily catering to the graphic jobber market, their present operations include Digital Job Work for diverse industries. “We have a good mix of machines in our shop that can print large quantities at good speeds without compromising on quality,” he says. Principal clientele of Bharat Photostat includes walk-ins and the key market segments it caters to currently include the likes of Export houses, Jewellers, Restaurants and Garments industry. The family owned business is headed by Chairman SK Nangia who looks after the administration and operations. Abhishek Nangia is the MD and is responsible for everything from business growth to day to day operations. Abhishek’s wife Geeta Nangia is the Director who looks after the administration and personnel. With a total staff strength of around 20, the company has a highly skilled workforce that receive regular realistic training from Xerox as well as other OEM engineers. “Xerox takes special care to conduct trainings during new installations, upgrades or as the need arises,” affirms Abhishek. The Bharat Photostat shop, spread across 2200 sq. feet of space and producing over 15,000 prints
per day, has a diverse range of production engines providing Digital Printing services to customers. They have been producing on other machines as well which include Canon and Konica Minolta. Two Plotters – one from Kip and one from Epson complement the set up at Bharat Photostat. The latest addition to the fleet is the Xerox ColorPress 1000i which was installed in January this year. The company recorded a turnover of 1.5 crores last year. Abhishek attributes the major part of their achievement to Xerox equipment especially the early digital machines Xerox DocuColor 12 and Xerox Sapida. “Presently, it is Xerox 1000i and Canon 10000VP that are our key growth drivers,” he says. Equipped with these ‘excellent digital presses’, he aims a 100% growth target this year.
Deciding on Xerox ColorPress 1000i “Xerox ColorPress 1000i is my dream project and provides my company a creative and competitive edge in the market due to gold & silver ink printing,” declares Abhishek. “The fact that the press has an additional 5th colour option made this decision very easy for me,” he continues. In addition, Xerox was the pioneer in offering Metallic Gold or Silver Dry ink at rated speed.
pressideas/ digital
have done some great tag and label printing on ColorPress 1000i and are superbly happy with the results,” he adds. “The market is growing, nonetheless, challenges such as meeting costs, competition from small machines and gray market machines exist,” points out Abhishek.
“I am making use of my 1000i for all jobs as it can convert lucrative foil stamping applications, such as invitations, certificates and business cards to short-run, high-value digital production. Multi-pass printing with clear ink adds an extra textural/dimensional feel and the “pop” of the silver and gold inks is its key differentiator,” praises Abhishek. They are using it for printing labels, books, corporate catalogues, tags etc. Apart from market demand, his personal thirst for creativity led him to buy the ColorPress 1000i, he says. “The Xerox ColorPress 1000i is packed with impeccable features and will definitely help us in expanding our business by producing fullcolour applications with vivid images on a wide range of paper stocks. Device includes an optional Specialty Dry Ink Station that enhances documents with metallic gold or silver dry inks or applies spot or flood creative effects with clear dry ink. This is the feature that interests me the most as it helps me and my designers get creative with respect to campaign,” explains Abhishek.
Generating huge 1000i benefits The 5th colour and gloss finish of ColorPress 1000i are the features that clearly distinguish this press from others in the market, according to Abhishek. The press has worked beautifully for Bharat Photostat’s customers. It has helped them cater to a diverse range of customer demands – be it quality or quantity. “We are extremely pleased with the machines’ performance till date on both, quality as well as quantity. The ColorPress 1000i has helped us in achieving massive productivity and generated savings of up to 40% in runs. We have carried out 3 lakh prints on it since February this year. Equipped with the unique, stand out features along with flexibility in printing on multiple medias, we now look forward to capturing a larger share of the market,” reveals Abhishek. “This is the only press offering gold and silver colour printing today and that makes us standout in the market for our customers. We
However, he is little worried about these challenges. He has his well equipped Bharat Photostat which can beat any challenge – present or future. The changing market demands can be met any time thanks to a balanced range of machines in their shop. Moreover, the digital printing segment is growing at a good rate in India. There is a continued increase in demand for short runs, creative colour and design. “For all these things our Xerox ColorPress 1000i will come in handy,” he states. Their focus is on the north markets in Delhi NCR region. They also employ runners for deliveries. Promotion is through sample copies and booklets. Customers can get a touch and feel of the quality etc. through real printed samples. Abhishek attributes their goodwill and success primarily to Xerox, its quality and service. “We are very happy with it. We have had a great experience since commencement with multiple Xerox devices and personnel. Xerox have been and will continue to be are trusted partners. Their sales and service support is amongst the best in the industry,” he concludes.

E-commerce, automation and cloud for print The Internet and World Wide Web have opened up new opportunities for printing, but new challenges too. As a new generation of people enters the workforce, they expect to be able to find and buy everything online, including print services. Printers increasingly need access to IT skills to run both internal automation and external web-to-print, but may have trouble finding or affording the right people. Cloud services are emerging as the answer to many of these needs. Here Simon Eccles provides an overview of the current state of e-commerce, web-to-print, cloud services and automation in print, all of which were important themes at the recent drupa.
End-to end factory automation was a major theme at drupa 2016. There was a Process Optimisations and Automation area within the drupa innovation park (dip) area. This is a continuation of decadesold trends to replace craft skills, processes and indeed employees, with computer-aided manufacturing.
Key Notes : > “Don’t touch what you can automate. We humans make mistakes and we cost more and more.” Guy Gecht. > Web ordering together with digital printing has allowed service providers to deal directly with consumers. > So far, smartphones and tablets are rarely used in sophisticated design and imaging work intended for professional print.

Print must adapt to the online generation For as long as there have been computers, people have thought up ways to use them in print. In today’s printing industry computers and programs (increasingly termed “apps”) are all-pervasive, from obvious uses in design, layout, imaging, web-to-print, workflow automation, MIS, accounts and invoicing, through to less overt embedded computers that monitor sensors on production machinery and make adjustments automatically. So it was natural that as soon as the World Wide
Web made Internet access easy in the early 1990s, people would start working out how to use it for their printing business. E-commerce, meaning buying and selling online, has been increasingly important to the industry since the beginning of this century. Now we’re seeing the development of cloud services, which shifts some production functions and storage away from local computers in printing companies, to remotely hosted services accessed over the Internet. As the “online generation” of people born since 1990 has grown up and entered the workforce, they assume that they can find, compare, specify, order and approve all their purchases online. Print service providers who want to stay in business now have to recognise that their customer base will increasingly expect to interact and trade with them online. They may not even want human interaction through sales staff or customer relationships managers, preferring to shop around anonymously at all hours of the day. Instead of relying on conventional sales teams on the road, printers can now reach out globally across the web, but this means learning or hiring new promotional skills such as search engine optimisation (SEO) and social media interaction.
pressideas/ digital
Yet the printing industry is still to take full advantage of this opportunity. The second drupa Global Trends Survey, published in 2014, covered the impact of the Internet on print. It consulted a worldwide panel of printers. It found that “Whilst 51% of the drupa panel had web-to-print, only 14% reported they used it to transact more than 25% of their orders.” However, in the same year, it reported that e-commerce as a whole was growing at 8% per annum in the USA, with China due to overtake it in volume terms in 2015 and to triple its volume of online trading by 2020. The drupa expert panel also admitted to a very patchy adoption of such techniques as customer database management (just 34% used it in 2014), website analytics (23%) and social media (25%). Only 17% were using these in integrated campaigns that are demonstrably the best way to exploit these techniques.
IT and the cloud A shortfall of IT specialists was also identified by the Global Trends Survey as a limiting factor in print worldwide. The report stated: “Print is now part of the broader communications industry and printing companies need to be increasingly IT-led. Only 23% of our drupa expert panel reported that IT expenditure had grown over the last five years and virtually all reported difficulties in recruiting adequate IT skills.” Ever more complex automated workflows and e-commerce systems require people who can install, maintain and update hardware and software. Small to medium sized print shops may not have the time or the money to find and employ such specialists full time.
A growing solution is for systems developers to offer hosted services, often called cloud hosting. This means the developer runs and maintains all the hardware and software
At the high end of e-commerce it can mean linking to ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning). In the printing industry sense this usually means print ordering systems
themselves, usually on remote servers linked to the Internet. This allows customers access online through web browsers or small client applications. An earlier term for much the same thing was SaaS (Software as a Service).
that link directly into large ‘customers’ own’ business management systems and client databases for direct ordering of print, direct mail and any other services that the PSP offers.
This means customers can use relatively low cost computers at their own sites, with all the complex IT work and maintenance handled on remote servers “in the cloud” and delivered online. Such services are generally offered on yearly or longer contracts, though some functions or applications may only be needed temporarily, so access can be ‘rented’ for a month or so as required.
E-commerce The drupa innovation park – the ‘dip’ – in Hall 7, included an area called Web-to-Media & E-Commerce. A focus was on solutions for web-to-publish or web-to-print, e-commerce and storefront platforms, cloud publishing and web editors for design/print and HTML5. E-commerce in printing is a wide-ranging concept that may include web-to-print (considered separately below), but it doesn’t have to. Some MIS applications have relatively simple e-commerce modules that allow customers to fill in RFQ (request for quotation) forms, to order reprints, order jobs from stock, track the status of orders and view their accounts. This is different from a full web-to-print system that allows customers to preview designs, customise them and approve soft proofs before generating PDF files that are sent to print.
As an example the French company Goaland, exhibiting in the dip, creates enterprise-level systems including Alpia, which it describes as a “product information management” system. When used with product sheets, for instance, a change in the engineering or other specifications will automatically be applied as updates to all web and print documents that include it. Goaland’s Arsia “enterprise multichannel management” centralised content system is used to automatically generate variations of document layouts for multi-channel media.
Web-to-print There are currently more than 100 web-toprint systems available worldwide, with a good number represented at drupa. Some operate locally via servers, but increasingly they are offered as remotely hosted services, either the client-server type or as cloud services access by standard web browsers. An example of cloud services is Gateway3D, a UK based company that exhibited in the drupa innovation park. This offers an online web-to-print service to other printers, allowing them to link their websites into product ordering, personalisation and previewing system (some items are previewed in 3D). Apps allow printers to create their own products (from a wide range of promotional items, not just print-on-paper), add

Many web-to-print operations offer standardised product templates that can be changed in limited ways by the customers – typically adding names and addresses and logos to pre-set business card layouts, or putting names and messages onto greetings cards.
personalisation options and manage orders. After orders are taken, they are sent to the printing house for production and delivery. Cloud delivery also allows small companies to gain an international reach. For instance Poland based Web2Print has been able to target international customers with its Cloud hosted Key2Print service. The service costs from €200 per month and there are about 180 international users. There is no one definition of web-to-print. They all allow end-user customers to access a print service provider via web browsers. Some are B2C (business-to-consumer) storefronts, aimed at consumers and “casual” business customers, usually offering a range of standardised photo products, business cards and other business stationery that can be customised, previewed and paid for online. Other web-to-print systems are set up for B2B (business to business), often intended for regular customers of a PSP. They will usually be set up with a range of the customers’ own jobs that can be customised, say for individual employees or departments, or shops or restaurants in a chain. Another possibility is called B2B2C (business-to-business-to-consumer). Here a printer sets up websites that are branded on behalf of a customer (for example a school), which in turn sells print services (in this example to parents ordering yearbooks or personalised greetings cards).

Fully flexible online design and layout facilities used to be difficult to develop, but can now be purchased ready-made. For example Belgium’s CHILI publish has developed CHILI publisher, now at version 5.0, which offers sophisticated layout and composition tools similar to standard design tools like Adobe InDesign or QuarkXPress, but accessed through a web browser. This can be integrated into web-to-print products to give a design element. Alternatively companies can use it to add a web facility to more conventional design systems. An example is Esko WebCenter, which uses CHILI editor to allow end users and customers to edit packaging designs online through a browser.
Consumer-facing sites Web ordering together with digital printing has allowed service providers to deal directly with consumers. Digital presses and wide format inkjet have been the enabling production technologies, but web-to-print has been the sales tool that reaches out to consumers to allow them to do things with their photographs and digital images that they’d never previously have imagined. In the late 1990s and early 2000s it looked as if home photo printers would be the norm and replace labs, but consumers quickly learned that colour management wasn’t easy, and buying inks in tiny cartridges was horribly expensive. Instead, lower prices due to economies of scale, plus a wide range of products, have kept specialist online photo service providers in business and thriving. It’s very likely that the overblown claims for home 3D printing will go the same way. The desktop 3D printers may be cheap, but they are slow and each can only output a very limited range of materials. Working with 3D modelling programs isn’t easy either. So it’s likely that those people who do need 3D objects to be printed will use 3D service bureaux and order their objects online.
Today, typical examples of customisable products include highly personalised wedding albums and yearbooks, canvas prints, calendars, mugs, placemats, T-shirts, photo blocks and greeting cards. Specialist sports sites may offer customised footballs, skis and snowboards, skateboards, helmets and other similar. The range of products will continue to be extended. It is already possible to order custom printed wallpapers, home furnishings and even ceramic tiles, which architects and retailers are starting to utilise, although the consumer market hasn’t really caught up with this trend. Customised garment decoration is also bound to grow beyond today’s T-shirts, sportswear and workwear. Today’s biggest users of web-to-print are the big consumer-facing (B2C) operations such as Moonpig (greetings cards), Vistaprint (a huge range from stationery to mugs), CeWe and Harrier (mainly photo-based products). Visitors to drupa 2016 saw plenty of webto-print service providers. These include Cimpress, the US based parent company of online print services giant Vistaprint, as well as other brands. The company has been on the acquisition trail in recent years, spending more than 300 million Euros. Purchases include the Italian pixartprinting and UK Tradeprint. Both offer online print services. Also web-to-print developers including the French Exagroup, Austrian druck.at and most recently the German WIRmachenDRUCK. Cimpress says the strategy is to build a mass customisation platform (MCP) that it brings to market via focused brands. The largest service providers have developed their own online trading software. However, there are off-the-shelf solutions, notably UK based Taopix with its Portfolio software and emerging competitors such as the US Pixami, and the UK Pixfizz and InfigoMegaEdit Photo.
Mobile futures Even in areas with no fixed telephone or data wires, mobile phone technology can access Internet and web data services via the 3G and faster 4G standards. This may also happen even in territories with developed telecoms infrastructure. In April 2015 the US National Telecommunications and Information Administration reported that 20%
pressideas/ digital
of US households access all their Internet over mobile networks rather than fixed wires. This proportion was doubled since 2013.
versions of their user interfaces and to use HTML5 rather than Flash, as the latter won’t work on Apple’s iOS devices.
a few third partner partners’ workflows), finally leading to warehousing, fulfilment and shipping.
The proposed 5G technology, likely to arrive in the next decade, should allow huge improvements in bandwidth (up to 1 Gigabit per second) through more numerous, very small and easy to install transmission points. If the price is right for 5G access, it may replace the need for fixed lines altogether, except for the heaviest users.
Automation
In the dip, Essen based i1BOX showed automation in a box, installing a preconfigured maintenance-free server at print sites to handle data and job management, CRM, e-mail, groupware, file sharing and asset management.
So far, smartphones and tablets are rarely used to create or handle sophisticated design and imaging work intended for professional print. Printing simpler documents such as reports and forms directly from mobile devices (including smartphones and tablets) is seen as desirable by both home and workplace use, but it remains very difficult according to the InfoTrends report (Mobile Devices and the Impact on Print, 2015). The problem is primarily to do with connectivity, it concludes, though this only considers direct output to local printers rather than web-to-print ordering. Most web-to-print operates through browsers, where tablets are little different to desktop and laptop computers. PSPs may wish to consider creating small-screen
End-to end factory automation was a major theme at drupa 2016. There was a Process Optimisations and Automation area within the drupa innovation park (dip) area. This is a continuation of decades-old trends to replace craft skills, processes and indeed employees, with computer-aided manufacturing. In the current jargon, the goal is to reduce “touch points,” where human operators have to literally handle parts of the job or its production machinery, or to enter data and instructions. “Don’t touch what you can automate,” said EFI’s CEO Guy Gecht at a recent user event in Las Vegas. “We humans make mistakes and we cost more and more.” EFI stressed integration and automation across the whole print process at drupa. Its Productivity Suite is a range of products that it has linked and certified that they will work together. These start with campaign management and cross-media marketing, through web to print and e-commerce, costing, estimating, scheduling and all the other MIS functions, then onto its Fiery production server based workflows (plus
A German government initiative called Industrie 4.0 promotes computerisation to produce the “smart factory”. This has inspired several “4.0” exhibits within drupa and Print 4.0 an entire digital workflow was set up throughout every hall. An example at the dip was Rogler Software, which worked with the University of Luxembourg to develop “Industrie 4.0” features for its ERP solution, though it predicts to be also relevant for small to medium sized companies. It uses autonomous intelligent software agents to recognise patterns in large data sets and determines the cheapest, fastest or safest production methods. This represents a “chance to shift the competitive balance in favour of high-wage European countries by realising savings and, as a result of this, to maintain or re-establish production in Europe”, says managing director Hannes Rogler. KBA-Sheetfed Solutions’ KBA 4.0 proposes a networked print factory in which products, presses and tools are continuously exchanging information via wireless chips and sensors. Some information is gathered centrally by KBA from multiple sites and pooled to detect patterns for the development of predictive maintenance. Likewise Muller Martini, with its automated concept that it calls Finishing 4.0, demonstrated “touchless workflows” at drupa, for example automatic imposition for digital printing as well as the company’s own Sigmaline automated digital book production lines. The drupa’s of 2000 and 2004 were very much taken up with the promise of linking production machines together with what emerged as JDF. Although the original goal of ‘plug-and-play’ has receded into the distance, today JDF is the standard for production data interchange between plate making, printing and finishing.

Current progress was demonstrated at drupa by CIP4, the industry-wide operation that develops JDF through sector committees. “Automation and optimisation are topics that are not only current, but they are also essential objectives to accomplish in order for print service providers to thrive in today’s print marketplace,” says Julie Watson, spokesperson for CIP4.

them to buy functions and components from other users. In conclusion, drupa 2016 demonstrated the ever-increasing importance of process automation at every stage of a print factory’s operations, together with the way it’s possible to reach out to customers through e-commerce and web-to-print, developing new products and services along the way.
Cloudy automation Inevitably, the cloud is being adopted for print automation too. At drupa HP revealed PrintOS – not an operating system, but rather a set of cloud-based services and apps for HP Indigo and other digital press users. One of the first systems available on HP PrintOS is OneFlow. This is a production management system for printers, covering high volume order submissions for B2C, brand managing, retailing, production workflow, despatch and shipping. It runs in the cloud, so can be accessed by
Hybrid Software, a Belgian based workflow integrations specialist, introduced ‘Cloudflow Share’ at drupa, a web-based workflow that connects multiple local workflows and offers pre-press functions. Also new was MyCloudflow, which lets companies purchase cloud-based capacity rather than buying a license and configuring their own system. Enfocus, whose Switch technology allows users to build their own workflows, introduced an EnfocusAppstore that allows

Sixth KBA Rapida for Grafobal 28 metres of high-tech sheetfed offset in Skalica
Following successful installations of KBA sheetfed offset presses in other print companies belonging to the Slovakian Grafobal group, whose operations are spread over several Eastern European countries and cover numerous other segments beside the core competency in packaging, the first KBA Rapida 106 has now been taken into operation at the Grafobal headquarters in Skalica. The configuration of this 28-metre high-tech press, with its 13 printing, coating and dryer units, is unique in Slovakia – and no less remarkable far beyond the local borders. Nine printing units are followed by a coater, two dryer towers, a second coater and a triple-length extended delivery with installation space for further dryers. This is at first sight a typical double-coater press for conventional, UV or mixed operation in the high-quality printing and finishing of folding carton products. Accordingly, the Rapida is also equipped with board-handling accessories and customerspecific pile logistics facilities, while a 675 mm plinth enables the use of higher piles when printing thick substrates.
With nine printing units, two coaters, two dryer towers and production speeds up to 18,000 sph, the highly automated Rapida 106 in Skalica combines ultimate productivity with an optimum range of print and finishing options.
18,000 sheets/hour with 13 units Much less common for such a long press, however, is the enormous output of up to 18,000 sheets per hour
with the HighSpeed package. One of the features which makes this possible is the extremely precise, sidelay-free SIS infeed (Sensoric Infeed System), which is only to be found on KBA Rapidas. Similarly standard for the Rapida 106, in contrast to many other medium-format presses of this category, is the consistent implementation of a dedicated drive concept at the feeder, with separate motors for the feeder head and feed table. In combination with the special Venturi sheet guiding system, highperformance VariDry dryers and a dynamic sheet brake in the delivery, these technical details lay the foundation for optimum print quality even at high speeds.
Job changeover at the press of a button High net outputs are dependent not just on high production speeds, but especially on fast makeready. The job changeover program of the Rapida 106 ensures that all selected changeover processes are performed automatically and in optimised sequence. The LogoTronic Professional software enables the data and corresponding press settings for the next job to be loaded into the ErgoTronic console while the current production is still running. The actual job changeover can then be started with a single press of a button.
Key Notes : > Already runs several KBA sheetfed offset presses. > First Rapida 106 taken into operation at grafobal headquarters. > Extremely precise sidelay-free SIS infeed enable 18000sph speed of Rapidas.

The highly automated Rapida 106 in Skalica
For over ten years now, the magic word for fast job changeovers on the makeready world champion press Rapida 106 has been “simultaneous”. In the meantime, other manufacturers have also started to use this term, though users must remain wary as to exactly what it is intended to describe. For the Rapida 106 in Skalica, the situation is unambiguous: Thanks to the DriveTronic SPC (Simultaneous Plate Change) direct drive technology on the plate cylinders, the plates can be changed in all nine printing units at the same time. KBA Plate Ident reads a data matrix code to identify the mounted plates and can thus monitor their correct positioning and order. Parallel to this, i.e. without any loss of time, the blankets and impression cylinders can be washed with the CleanTronic Multi system. Another important function which contributes to fast makeready in folding carton production using a large number of different colours is the washing system DriveTronic SRW for the ink rollers in printing units 1, 2, 7, 8 and 9. If any of these units are not required for the current job, the rollers can already be washed down during production. Time-consuming ink changes between jobs thus become a thing of the past. Fast job changeovers are not limited to just the printing units, however. One of the coaters incorporates an AniloxLoader system for automated anilox roller changes without physical stress for the operator. Three anilox rollers are held in a magazine directly on the coater. This system, too, is unique in Slovakia.
Finishing diversity A double-coater press permits a multitude of coating effects. All the more so when it is equipped not only with supply circuits for dispersion and UV coatings, but also with provisions for special coating types such as gold, silver and Iriodin. The outputs of the IR/hot-air intermediate dryers and the VariDryBLUE IR, hot-air and UV dryers in the triple-length extended delivery are adapted to handle these applications. The VariDryBLUE final dryers are particularly efficient, as the hot air delivered to the initial segments is subsequently recirculated for drying in the rest of the delivery. The benefits of repeated heat use are especially evident in an airconditioned hall.
Controlled quality For printers of highly demanding packaging, e.g. for cigarettes, continuous quality control is an absolute must. On the Rapida 106, a camera system enables the operator to stay abreast of what is happening inside the press. The on-press measuring and control system QualiTronic Professional uses inline measurements to evaluate every single sheet and to detect possible defects in the printed image. If necessary, the inking can be corrected and expensive waste is reduced to a minimum. The customer can also be offered a detailed quality report. Further systems which help the operator to monitor print quality are ErgoTronic ColorControl for the measurement of ink densities and L*a*b* values, and ErgoTronic ACR for register evaluation.
Job changeover at the press of a button is just one of the many possibilities at the modern ErgoTronic console
The operators are visibly happy with their new press
In addition to its primary function of simultaneous plate changing, the SPC system can also be used to adjust the print length. This practical function is a highly valued means to further enhance product quality.
Convenience and efficiency at the console The operator-friendly ErgoTronic console enables convenient and efficient press handling. All functions are accessed and controlled intuitively via the TouchTronic interface, which never requires more than two taps on the console touchscreen. The program “One-Button Job Change” accelerates job changes by optimising the sequence of individual process steps. The “FastInkUp” function, on the other hand, is able to reduce start-up waste by up to 40 per cent; the last sheets of a job are used to reduce the old ink profile on the rollers, and the inking unit comes into colour faster with the new profile. The operator is presented a clearly arranged job list with information on ink coverage, visualisation of the ink profiles and preview images. The coverage data of the individual jobs facilitate determination of an optimum job sequence to minimise startup waste and makeready time. The sixth installation of a Rapida press in a company of the Grafobal group underlines KBA’s strong position in packaging print. This applies not only in KBA’s dominant large formats area but also in the highly competitive medium-format segment. Proof is furnished not least by a recent stream of installations with packaging customers on the Czech and Slovakian markets. But not only the packaging segment is convinced – commercial and book printers are equally appreciative of the practice-oriented automation and high production output of the KBA Rapidas.

Cosmo Films launches a BOPP film for cement bag protection Cosmo Films, manufacturer of speciality BOPP films, has recently launched its special BOPP film that enhances moisture resistance of cement bags. This film is used for laminating block bottom cement bags which are made of woven PP material. The product is already in commercial use and finding traction with major cement brands. Indian cement industry has been struggling with a sizeable spoilage of total cement packed due to moisture and associated lump formation. The special film launched by Cosmo, not only provides additional protection to the contents inside by adding moisture barrier, but also enhances the print quality of the printed material making it more appealing for the consumer. Being a 100% polyolefin structure, it is environment friendly and would further enhance the reusability of the bag. Cosmo’s polypropylene based film bonds really well with the woven PP fabric and,
also takes microperforation/nano embossing well. The laminated bag has excellent heat seal & hot tack properties and displays excellent machinability. Apart from the cement bags & other building materials, these laminated bags could be used to pack variety of staples such as rice, flour, sugar etc; pet foods; fertilizers and chemicals. Commenting on the development, Mr Pankaj Poddar, CEO Cosmo Films said “India is world’s second largest cement producer after China with production estimates of approx 300 million tonnes per annum with production figures estimated to reach 407 million tonnes p.a by FY17. With only 15% of the cement being packed in block bottom bags, there is a huge potential in converting these bags into laminated ones
and upgrading the traditional PP stitched bags as well. Laminated bags have already done well in Pakistan and Bangladesh and consumption is already on the rise in Indian market.” Cosmo Films is one of the leading manufacturers of Bi-axially Oriented Polypropylene (BOPP) films used for packaging, labels and lamination applications. The company is the largest exporter of BOPP films from India and is also the largest producer of thermal lamination films with plant cum distribution centres in India, Japan, Korea & the U.S and global channel partners in more than fifty countries.

Martin Charles and roland printer ensure viewers believe in ghostbusters Do the monumental task of making the sets look real and bringing the creepy characters to life Ghostbusters – a 2016 reboot of the classic 1984 supernatural action/comedy film – opened on July 15. In the new version, an all-female ghost-busting team take on a massive number of slimy ghosts and ghouls threatening to take over New York City. In addition to all the CGI movie magic needed to bring these creepy characters to life, making the sets look real was a monumental task. To help bring the set to life, the film’s producers called on graphic designer Martin Charles. Using his talent and Roland wideformat printer, Charles gave an authentic look to everything from faux building walls and surface textures to the street signs, labels and bottles in the Ghostbusters’ lab. Charles, the founder of Santa Monica-based SagaBoy Productions is no stranger to Hollywood circles. He has helped design and create realistic sets for more than 50 feature films and television productions, including movies such as “42,” “Public Enemies,” “Love and Other Drugs,” “Charlie Wilson’s War,” and the HBO hit series “The Newsroom.” However, producing the wide variety of detailed sets for Ghostbusters, which ranged from mid-town hotels to Times Square to haunted mansions, definitely required the best his skills and equipment had to offer. “Rebooting this legendary movie franchise was a great opportunity and an intriguing challenge,” said Charles. “We needed to preserve all the familiar graphic elements while bringing in a few modern twists.”
48
August 2016
Charles worked closely with Production Designer Jefferson Sage to create all of the different settings needed for the film. Recreating the bustling New York City streets required designing and producing commercial signage, wall wraps, street signs and posters, as well as the wraps needed to transform ordinary vehicles into NYC taxi cabs, NYPD cruisers and EMS emergency vehicles. For the film’s interior shots, he produced posters, signs, labels, wallpaper and wraps that simulated marble and other surfaces. “It all translated into an incredible amount of work,” noted Charles, “Fortunately, my Roland inkjets allowed me to print just about anything you can imagine on the set quickly and easily. That was crucial in meeting the tight deadlines dictated by the Ghostbusters shooting schedule. I also relied on the help of two additional graphic experts – Stephanie Charbonneau and Kelly Hemenway – to get the job done.” To produce the full range of graphics needed for the film, Charles employed a 64-inch Roland SOLJET Pro 4 XR-640 large-format colour printer/cutter and Roland Eco-Sol MAX 2 inks. “Having a product like the Roland, which can handle all of our graphics needs, is a huge plus,” he said. “In addition to providing stellar quality production, the XR640 has built-in printing and contour cutting capability, so with one machine, we can do it all. The Eco-Sol MAX 2 inks helped ensure outstanding results as well, allowing us to hit
the colour mark every time and achieve fine close-up details, which were often required for Ghostbusters.” For scenes that included a re-created Times Square and simulated rock concert, Charles produced photo images, backlit signage and images, billboard banners, and a variety of smaller signs. This output was printed on a range of materials, including artist canvas, varying weights of vinyl media, photo paper, poster paper and adhesive fabric. To set the backdrop for one interior scene, Charles even needed to produce over 3,000 square feet of printed wallpaper graphics. In total, Charles worked for close to eight months on Ghostbusters, including a four-month shoot. When designing each set, Charles worked backwards from the shoot date, allotting time for the appropriate approvals from the designer and director. “I wouldn’t do any movie without my Roland,” Charles stated. “Getting a ‘thank you’ from the director and a personal e-mail from the producer saying ‘See you on my next movie,’ is proof of satisfaction. Everyone was quite happy, and I think the viewers will be too!”

This results in sign and display graphics that exit the printer dry and are immediately ready for further processing, significantly reducing production cycle times. In addition, UV-curable inks emit no volatile organic compounds (VOCs), minimising the environmental footprint. The UJF-7151 plus industrial small format UV Inkjet flatbed printer ensures high quality printing and top level productivity with ultraaccurate ink droplet placement. It has a maximum printable size of 710 x 510 mm (28 x 20in). This best-in-class digital on-demand industrial small format printing solution for the screen printing industry improves accuracy, consistency and reliability by modifying the mechanical structure of the print table. Fine lines, edges and small texts are crystal clear. It also enables double-layer printing and colour printing on a white base layer. The Mimaki TX300P-1800 is an innovative 1.8 meter roll-to-roll direct-to-textile inkjet printer designed to meet the market demand for smaller lot sizes, faster delivery times and the ability to quickly produce samples. Created specifically for direct-to-textile printing, the 8-colour inkjet printer features a new printhead that ejects ink droplets at high speed to ensure accurate ink droplet placement with a high head gap. This makes the printer ideal for printing high quality images on all types of fabrics, including thicker and textured materials.
