FROM THE EDITORS’ DESK Dear Readers, Colours make our life – in different aspects of our life. Printing contributes to many of life’s colours. For example, currency is today a beautiful colourprinted medium of exchange. Apart from facilitating an easy recognition for different denominations, the colours also make it somewhat modern from the instrument of the past. Well, they are so colourful that we find it quite difficult to find any black or white in it. Demonetisation too helped in a fresh new colour for a few of our printed notes. The industry suffered its impact, especially in the lower rungs of the manufacturing and consumption chain which characterised day-to-day indispensability of transactional cash. Necessity drove them to adopt cashless and things took their time. Thankfully, the industry has come out of earlier business blockages and demand is getting on track. We discussed it with industry people during the recent Print Expo 2017 in Chennai and tried to understand the industry sentiment. They were more into GST – claimed as one of the greatest tax reforms for goods and services in decades. Here again, the lower rungs of the manufacturing and business chain have been seen asking for more time to fully implement the new regime which has – either been difficult to understand or impacted adversely by way of more tax than it was previously for them. Things will take time. And, it is widely believed that it will actually benefit tax payers by saving them from multiple tax and interstate business. KMPA has submitted a memorandum to the Minister of Finance on GST. The memorandum highlights the lack of clarity prevalent in the printing industry regarding GST. Xerox India showcased its all new Versant 3100 & Versant 180 at Print Expo. The new versions feature over 500 modifications, Fiery and more to give enhanced value proposition to customer. Konica Minolta showcased newly launched Production Printing cut sheet press Accurio Press C2060 and C2077 PS models. Ricoh India launched Ricoh Pro C5200S equipped with the version 2 engine and can print directly on 360 gsm. media and take higher loads. The Canon highlights included its flagship production machine ImagePRO 8000 and the 650 model. Monotech made the maiden show of Mimaki Latex Printer along with a showcase of key Finishing equipment for both Digital and Offset printing processes. You can find details about the showcased solutions in the inside pages with exclusive comments from key officials present during the show. Another upcoming event of import is the WAN-IFRA India Conference in Chennai taking place from 13 to 14 September. The international newspaper conference will have high profile speakers from the newspaper world and will include the likes of David Callaway of The Street Inc.; Mukund Padmanabhan of The Hindu; Shadi Rahimi of Al Jazeera; Bella Hurrell of BBC news; Basant Rathore of Jagran Group; and Michael Kiesswetter of Rheinische Post AdLog GmbH. The Panel Discussion will be chaired by Thomas Jacob, COO, WAN-IFRA and other personalities at the discussion will be Pawan Agarwal, DB Corp; Rajiv Lochan, Kasturi & Sons and Rajiv Verma, HT Media. There are also news details about PAMEX 2017 as well as LabelExpo Europe in this issue. Also of interest to our readers should be the articles – ‘Beer and Beverage Label Printing: What you need to know!’ and ‘IML Technology for food and non-food applications’. Trends in UV Technology Advent of Process-Free Pre-press for UV Print environments.

With all the buzz around Digital printing over the last decade or so, it’s easy to miss the fact that during that same time span there have been some big changes for Offset printing. Approximately 97% of printed pages come from Offset presses, with only 3% printed Digitally, so any changes to Offset technology have the potential to make a big impact both for individual printers and for the industry as a whole. Arguably, the most noticeable change in Offset printing technology has been the trend toward UV curable inks. UV technology has been used in the printing industry for a long time, particularly with packaging, label, and business forms printers, but it hasn’t had much penetration in other areas until recently. However, in the last few years, UV has taken off among commercial printers, primarily due to new, low-energy UV technologies introduced by the major press manufacturers.

Low-energy UV offers all the advantages like higher gloss levels as well as superior rub resistance with a smaller, less expensive system using less energy.

Key Notes : >

Advantages of UV – less VOC emissions and inks drying on plastic and nonporous substrates and dry fast.

> If you can get it through the press you can print on it. > Ink dots are left sitting on the substrate, delivering more vibrant colour and detail.

Kodak has been watching the move to UV closely, talking with its customers about the improvements they are seeing in their printing operations with UV, working with them to make the transition as smooth as possible, and developing new products that can extend the advantages of UV for them even further.

Brief overview of UV Printing UV curable inks were introduced as an alternative to

solvent-based products to provide improved print quality and higher speed to a dry print. Conventional heat and air drying works by solvent evaporation, a process that shrinks the initial wet coating and additionally can release environmental pollutants when organic solvents are present (VOC’s). In UV curing, there is little or no solvent. Instead, the inks comprise liquid reactive components. These reactive components can be hardened rapidly through the application of UV light, which causes chemical crosslinking (or hardening). Because there is little or no solvent to evaporate, there is no volume lost from the wet coating, resulting in higher ink densities and higher gloss on the print. In addition, there are no environmental pollutants from any organic solvents. Through the use of photoinitiators, it has been possible to cure the inks using UV lamps. Conventional UV lamps consume a lot of power, take up a lot of space and generate a lot of heat. These systems also produce ozone, requiring an extraction system that adds cost to the press. Together these factors limit the application to print shops where the value of the print product would pay for the equipment and cost of running the UV. More recently, with the advent of higher powered and cheap UV sources, it has been possible to provide the same amount of energy to the wet sheet but with a lot less power, heat and space, and no need for an ozone extraction system. With these new low-energy UV

pressideas/ commercial printing

systems, such as LED-UV, H-UV, HR-UV, and LEC-UV, equipment and running costs are reduced, and old presses can be more easily modified with the smaller equipment. These less expensive, smaller systems are allowing Commercial Printers to use UV and take advantage of faster turnarounds, less maintenance through use of less anti-setoff powder, a wider range of substrates, and higher print quality. Craig Bretherton, Product and Marketing Manager at KBA (UK), states, “Commercial printers are also being attracted to this technology as it means difficult-to-dry stocks, such as offset, can be quickly turned around without the need for coating. In addition, due to the lack of a requirement for extraction and coating units in many cases, capital costs to add new drying technologies are not prohibitive.” Printers in Japan have widely adopted lowenergy UV presses, with Ryobi MHI (RMGT) being one of the first press manufacturers to the market with their LED-UV technology, and with Komori offering H-UV technology. The estimate is that about 70% of new presses made in Japan are now low-energy UV presses. In Europe, UV presses are also dominating new press sales. Heidelberg estimates that approximately 15% of their global installations of presses are UV presses.

New technology means more new technology Switching to a UV system requires a complete review of all current components that go through the press, and some changes will be necessary. Not only will a printer be changing their inks, they must also look at compatibility with press chemicals, blankets, substrates, and more. In particular, UV can be challenging for printing plates. The good news is that Kodak’s plate scientists and engineers are very familiar with UV technology, and we have developed new, innovative plate technology specifically for UV print applications, including low-energy UV. New plate technologies are necessary because in a UV system, the blanket washes and plate cleaners that are required to clean the special UV-curable inks also happen to be aggressive against the coating of printing plates. Also, as the press chemistries have become more eco-friendly, they provide

10

August 2017

less protection for the plates. Historically, Kodak provided plates that could be baked to withstand the aggressive chemicals used with UV, but baking is also not very environmentally friendly, using a lot of energy and producing excess heat. Kodak’s newest plates, such as KODAK ELECTRA MAX Thermal Plates, deliver superior solvent resistance without baking and are therefore ideal for UV applications, plus they require less developer in prepress than previous generation plates, further increasing their environmental benefits. KODAK SONORA Process Free Plates reduce even more environmental impact by eliminating the energy, water, and chemical

waste from plate processing. SONORA Plates are suitable for short-run UV print applications, up to 10,000 impressions with SONORA XP Plates and 30,000 impressions with SONORA UV Plates. What’s in store for the future? Kodak looks forward to many new innovations around Offset print, whether they come from the press manufacturers, other industry suppliers, or printers themselves. And, of course, as the inventor of Thermal CTP and the first to introduce a successful Process Free Plate technology, Kodak will surely be at the forefront of developing newer technologies as well.

Event Review

Xerox India showcases the all new Versant 3100 & Versant 180 The new versions have come with almost 500 plus modifications, all new Fiery engine and more to give enhanced value proposition to the customer. “We are showcasing a recently launched product here in this show – the all new Versant 3100 & Versant 180,” informs Balaji Rajagopalan, Executive Director – Technology, Xerox India, who was speaking to PRESSIdeas at the recent Print Expo 2017 in Chennai. These are the latest versions of Xerox’s successful models launched last year – the Versant 80 and Versant 2100.

Technology has changed dramatically; workflow and automation has constantly improved. All this has been encompassed in the products that we have displayed here.” Balaji Rajagopalan, Xerox India.

Key Notes : >

All Xerox machines come with inline calibration, inline automation, registration, back-toback printing.

> All print jobs are executed perfectly on the fly on Xerox machines. > Already 200 Versant series Xerox machines are sold and running successfully in India.

16

August 2017

Apart from this, Xerox displayed the new version of C-70. The Versant Series 180 is the new version of the earlier Versant 80 and Versant 3100 follows Versant 2100. “These new versions have come with almost 500 plus modifications to give the users far more reliability, uptime for the machine due to enhancement in the capability of the hardware as well as the print quality. Most importantly these new versions come with the all new Fiery engine, with text display etc all of these gives a much more value proposition to the customer. The most important point to be noted is how your workflow is done, how you are doing the profiling, how fast you are feeding the job to the machine. All this makes a big difference,” adds Balaji.

Customer expectations in the Digital technologies In recent times, Digital Print market has observed remarkable changes, one of the most important aspect being – what the customer is looking for,

says Balaji. “There is more and more expectation in print quality and reliability of the Digital Printing technologies. Customers are looking for far much faster workflow, because in India walk-in customers are more for any print shop with faster delivery expectations. So the print shop has to constantly endeavor to make the efficiency of the machine much faster. That’s the reason every machine is loaded with a Fiery engine – embedded Fiery or external Fiery. Moreover every customer comes with different media for his print jobs – 300 gsm, 350 gsm; Coated, Uncoated and so on. So all our machines comes with a suite with 40 to 50 job profiles, which can output any jobs with any profile immediately,” he explains. The suite adjusts all parameters for the job automatically. This capability enhancement is a constant development in all print machines of Xerox. Also, none of the Xerox machines need any manual intervention – all these machines come with inline calibration, inline automation, registration, back-toback printing – so that all print jobs are executed perfectly on the fly. “These are some of the aspects every customer looks for. Other customer expectation is environment friendliness of their print jobs. Xerox machines are highly environmentally compliant. Our machines consume very less power, our toners are specialized blow melt toners with very less heat emission etc. The third customer expectation is for “Peace of Mind”

pressideas/ event review

in the handling of his Xerox equipments. Xerox is known for its excellent customer service and its back up team which can solve any problem in the least possible time. Our service across the world is knowledge based and has global service support 24x7. Technology has changed dramatically; workflow and automation has constantly improved. All this has been encompassed in the products that we have displayed here,” summarizes Balaji.

Digital Print market evolution Technology evolves continuously. What we see today and what we saw ten years back is very different - in terms of size and speed of the machine, print runs, automation of the workflow, print quality, print media, reliability of the machine etc. So developments will take place in all these parameters. The major application areas for Digital printing, according to Balaji, are chiefly segmented into Mono and Colour. “In mono, apart from the normal one-off print jobs, Variable Data printing is the major application. The next major application is book publishing, thanks to development in technology which enables digital to print on less than 70 gsm media. In the colour segment the major application areas are many from photo printing, commercial offset printing, colour proofing and many other colour printing applications like brochures, book covers, advertisements, menu cards and so on. People are getting attracted to color more and more and hence colour printing applications will increase over period of time,” he elaborates.

18

August 2017

When compared to other printing processes especially Offset, Digital is less suited for large print requirements. However, Digital is taking over in the area of Variable Data printing, in the field of innovation & creativity. Since the life cycle of the printed job is getting lower and lower, presently no one wants to ‘Print lot and distribute forever’. The print run is reducing day by day. Everyone wants to print locally and distribute electronically for that particular requirement only. Book-on-Demand printing is a factor which is gaining traction with more and more online distribution companies getting into the fray. The truth of holding stock and selling it over time is gone. In all these areas digital does play a great role in terms of creativity, vibrancy, creativity, variability and customization. So, Short-run print jobs are on the increase for which Digital is the most suitable technology. “Due to our smart

pricing strategy, our prices have come down by about 30% in the last few years. In terms of market share, considering all types of printing, offset does hold more than 90% share nationally and globally. But in particular segments Digital may score over Offset. Also, as far as Hybrid technology is concerned, it’s the earliest stage and I don’t find anyone installing such a machine anywhere in India,” says Balaji. Xerox doesn’t find volumes of business as suitable for manufacturing in India. for them, ‘Make in India’ is in the realm of Digital printing. “We have already started in our own way. We have introduced in India paper to print on Digital equipments upto 300 gsm. As far as printing equipments are concerned the volumes of business in India does not warrant manufacturing here. At this scale of

business requirements, if you make in India, it will be costlier than the imported one,” maintains Balaji.

The GST - overall effect Xerox business remained unaffected by demonetization since the machines are sold only on Business-to-Business on non cash basis. “For the users of our equipments demonetization did affect their business for a short period only. It’s the same situation for every industry. There was a volume dip but it has bounced back once again, since the end customers have found innovative ways of non cash payments,” shares Balaji. “As for GST, for printing it’s 18% and multi-function printers, it’s 28%, which looks on the higher side. But then, it’s same for the entire industry and hence the effect too is the same across the industry. Moreover, every business can take credit of tax paid, therefore, the overall impact is not much. At the end of the day they only gain. Earlier for click billing we were paying Service tax as well as VAT. For VAT they take credit but not for service tax. But under GST you get credit for service tax as well. So overall GST is beneficial,” he continues. “GST is the most important with far reaching positive implications over long term for the country and we welcome it. More so it brings a lot of simplicity in the way we work on a day to day basis. GST is just one country one tax and nothing else. This gives a lot of advantages to us as an organization. I don’t have to open warehouses across the country and move my goods from place to place to minimize tax implications. There is lot of time and money saving due to simplified logistics. Other than this, there are many other evolutions taking place like eTax, eChallan etc. All these will make the way in which we do business very simple and more and more businesses will become tax compliant,” he concludes. Having already sold over 200 Versant series machines across the country, Xerox is among the leaders of Indian Digital printing. “I can definitely say that as an organization we are growing and if you see the IDC data we are leading in some segment. As per the IDC data we have more than 30% market share. We are No.1 in certain segments,” says Balaji.

Ricoh India launches Ricoh Pro C5200S at Print Expo 2017 Equipped with the version 2 engine, the new machine can print directly on 360 gsm media and take higher loads. Ricoh India launched Ricoh Pro C5200S at the Print Expo 2017 platform in Chennai. The Pro C5200S comes with a new version 2 engine and can print on 360 gsm media directly. “It is an upgrade of our version 1 engine Pro C5100S, exhausted in the first quarter of this year, which could print only upto 300 gsm,” explains Sambit Misra, COO – Production Planning, Ricoh India. “Secondly this new printer can take higher loads,” he adds. Other than this, Ricoh showcased the five colour machine with neon, white and clear inks. “Generally all toner based printers work with CMYK colours. But we have come out with additional toners which are white, clear and neon. So you can print florosic yellow on a black paper you can print with neon and white colours. Earlier printing was done on white paper. We have changed that with this new engine with which you can print on any colour media,” says Sambit.

“We have a very large continuous speed print equipment base in the country. We have over twenty four up equipments running across the country which means each one of them print upto 30 million impressions a month.” Sambit Misra, Ricoh India.

Another highlight was the showcased high end Ricoh C9100 product with 135 ppm colour engine which can print almost a million prints a month. It’s an ideal product for printers who have a monthly print volume of over 1.5 lakh prints. This machine is a workhorse and brings efficiency and profitability as the print volumes increase.

The Digital Print market changes Sambit observes that Digital Print market has been undergoing changes as regards applications and customer preferences. “We see that our customers are now looking more into the printed product rather than the print itself. Their focus is more on the quality of the printed product and its suitability for varied applications. The second major change we see now in Digital Printing is the increase in Post-print Finishing applications. More and more Digital Print providers have added in house equipments for finishing capabilities. Digital printers are now becoming a onestop-shop for all printing requirements – from printing to finishing,” he explains. He also expresses his concern on movement from direct customers to third party print freelancers. “This is a matter of grave concern since these freelancers keep approaching newer print shops for cheap prices and with little concern towards product quality. They lack loyalty traits and are key contributors of inefficient businesses with low profitability and substandard quality,” notes Sambit. As regards the recent tax change in the country, Sambit is sure the final consumer in the print product consumption chain would benefit by at least 10% as

pressideas/ event review

compared to existing price. “The GST impact has been positive for both – our business as well as the industry. Earlier is the final print product consumer was paying almost five times the original click charge. Though they were getting the benefit of VAT but not the multiple service taxes paid for the inputs at different stages. But with the implementation of GST, the entire service tax paid will be reimbursed to him. This will increase his margin by minimum 10%,” he asserts. He is of the view that GST has been able to stabilize the shake-up of demonetisation especially for those down the production band. Our end customers did get affected by the demonetization for a couple of months. All of them were busy trying to move their money and put them in the right places since around 40% of their businesses were done in cash. Their businesses have now more or less stabilized with the implementation of GST wherein most of them have now switched to cashless transaction to avail the benefits of GST,” he says. Another recent development on the policy front has been the ‘Make in India’ initiative by the government for the industry. Sambit doesn’t find it being a much attractive proposition for the manufacturing of printing equipment. “Print Industry is not much benefited by the incentives being offered by the government for ‘Make in India’. This campaign will be beneficial to those companies who are paying higher excise duty for their manufactured products. For manufacturing mobile phones it makes sense, since the business volumes are huge. But for printing equipments, it’s a different story, except may be for setting up units for assembling toners etc. For us, now that the CVD has been removed, the custom duty on our imported products amounts to only 10%. To set up a manufacturing unit in India to manufacture these products with 10% customs duty does not make sense. You can never achieve the economies of scale to reduce the price. The volumes of such imported equipments in India are so low that it does not encourage setting up manufacturing units in India,” he elaborates. Ricoh is No.3. in the Production Print business and leads in print volumes in India. “We have a very large continuous speed print equipment base in the country. We have over twenty four up equipments running across

the country which means each one of them print upto 30 million impressions a month,” states Sambit. He adds that Ricoh did as much business in the last two years as it in the preceding five years. “The future of the industry is very competitive at this point of time. The market is also not growing at the same pace as last year. The smaller print providers who have installed new equipments in the last few years are not going to invest in new equipments for the next seven / eight years. Selling new equipments to the same print

provider is becoming more and more tough,” he contends. Speaking on the hype around mobile printing, Sambit says that the time isn’t ripe yet to integrate print equipment for the mobile environment. “It’s not the right time since India is lagging behind in the Online printing services point. If you look at the Online print services in developed countries, every online print service provider has to integrate their equipments to mobile technology. Here in India it will take another five years to achieve this,” he concludes with a foresight.

Canon presents ImagePRO 8000 at Print Expo Canon India presented its latest solutions to the Indian printing fraternity at the recent Print Expo 2017 in Chennai. The Canon highlight at the show was the flagship production machine ImagePRO 8000. Beside the 8000, there was also on display the 650 model and the black and white machine to answer the lower end of the market segment. “This show has become the only prominent show over the years,” says Ravi Srinivasan, Assistant Director, Commercial Printing Department, Canon India. He however found the footfall lower this time. He was quite positive about the Inkjet technology in Digital printing sphere. “From the view point of the printers, every organization is doing some developmental work on the Inkjet side, though it may take time to evolve. Currently the situation is that the toner based machines will continue to be there for quite some more time,” he shares. He says that cut sheets continues to be

the preferred media for Digital printing. With no major recent change in customer preferences, the printers have to be more creative to improve the print quality in a cost effective manner. The business has been slow in July and August. “We expect the business to considerably improve once the GST and its provisions are understood completely by the industry,” he says. He also cites it to be one of the reasons for the low footfall in this show. “But we are positive of the after effects of GST implementation,” he adds. “More and more customers are now adopting invoice based business to avail the benefits of GST. This will eventually improve market sentiments and business is bound to grow, since selling price will definitely come down and affordability will increase with the GST,” he elaborates. Canon is contributing to the industry in its new focused area of Skill Development initiative. “We are training more and more new recruits in our service department and make them ready for any skilled jobs. We offer these new recruits stipend as well. Skill development is also a thrust area for the present government,” asserts Ravi. Canon has a strong market position with around 15% year on year growth in India.

Monotech highlights recently launched Mimaki Latex Printer Focusing Inkjet, Monotech offers key finishing equipment for Offset and Digital printing at the Print Expo 2017. Monotech India highlighted their latest Mimaki Latex Printer at the recent Print Expo 2017, Chennai. Beside the Mimaki, they had on show key Finishing equipments for both Digital and Offset printing processes. The newly launched Mimaki Latex Printer had its maiden show at Chennai.

Focusing Inkjet “The Commercial Digital Print market is growing, but our focus is on the Inkjet side, especially for special applications like Label and Packaging and Variable Data Printing,” comments T. P. Jain, MD, Monotech India. He informs that they are developing solutions on their Jet-SCI Industrial Inkjet Solutions platform. Having provided customized solutions with over 100 installations in India and abroad, they are now launching two products based on this platform which will be full fledged Inkjet Label presses for Book Printing and Statement Printing. “In the Wide Format segment, we find that Flat-bed UV Printers are getting traction in the market for more and more industrial applications. These are the areas we are now focusing on – in the Nano-format for the Packaging and Label market and the Wide-format for the Industrial Printing market,” adds Jain. Recent economic policy shake-ups by government have affected the businesses across the country though each to a different level. The demonetisation effect was felt till March and GST implementation has too slowed down the business flow in the industry. “Generally we do not have much of cash and carry business. But, because of the down beat sentiment which prevailed during the demonetisation period, our business was affected, though for a very short period. From March onwards it was normal once again till the implementation of GST in July,” shares Jain. He hopes things to settle down positively in the approaching months. “We hope normalcy to return once again from the last quarter of this year. We are very positive about the GST Act; our customers and getting benefited

22

because we are able to lower our prices by passing on the benefits of CVD to them. The entire industry is learning to understand the provisions of GST and its implementation procedures and that is why the business has slowed down in the last two months. Going forward we are sure this GST will benefit all the businesses across the country,” he asserts.

Jet SCI – a complete ‘make in India’ platform Already working towards the ‘Make in India’ initiative of the government, Monotech’s machines made on the Jet-SCI platform is completely made in India. “We have now tied up with GM of Denmark to use their platform for manufacturing Inkjet Label Printers in India. GM is a major supplier of Transport

and Finishing equipments for Label Printing for customers worldwide. GM will now source these equipments from us in future. In the Wide-format segment also we are manufacturing some products in India. There are two more projects in the pipeline for indigenous manufacture, the details of which we will shortly announce to the industry. So our focus is to build products on Inkjet technology in India. We have already started exporting these products to six countries. We are committed to produce more and more products in India for the international as well as domestic markets,” explains Jain. Monotech’s last year’s business growth figures stand at around 30% and Jain looks forward to register similar growth this year as well.

These solutions offer customers opportunity to expand their business globally. “Customer can order from our online shop and the product will be delivered anywhere they need it. Our Accurio Pro conductor is a solution for workflow integration,” says Vikas. This may even slow down business for a couple of months but once things normalize, GST is advantageous to the customer and it will make them more accountable to the economy. It will be very beneficial for organizations doing business all over the country,” says Vikas. He also drew attention towards effects of demonetization on their end customers especially jobbers who use to do cash and carry transactions. “Most of them have now overcome their cash problems and regularized their cash transactions into electronic cash transactions. With the regularization of their books, their capability has increased and they can now invest in new equipments with financial support from banks,” he reveals. Presently importing all equipments from Japan, Konica Minolta India, with over 51% share in the production print market is among the leaders in the digital printing arena.

Trelleborg expands partnerships in Indian newspaper market To work more closely with customers in future; and to present innovative solutions at the forthcoming WAN-IFRA 2017. Since the last WAN IFRA conference, Trelleborg printing solutions operation has made significant strides in pushing forward the boundaries of offset blanket technology relating to newspaper production and at the forthcoming WAN IFRA 2017 the company says it will be speaking to customers about working even more closely with them in the future. Maniraju Bora, Sales and Technical Director for the South West Asia region, says: “Newspaper groups need suppliers that are true partners, which understand the challenges and issues they face and are able to provide innovative solutions. Trelleborg manufactures the industry’s best known brands, with Vulcan 202, Vulcan Royal Web and Rollin Graffity Plus, being household names amongst newspaper printers.

The blanket is crucial to the profitability of the press and it is not something that can be dropped off at the printer’s factory and forgotten about.

August 2017

“Over the last few years a great deal of work has been carried out at Trelleborg’s extensive R&D facilities at the Lodi Vecchio manufacturing facility in Italy to create Offset Blanket solutions that match the specific needs of the Indian newspaper market. Printers need the flexibility to customize blankets according to the type of stock they are handling, the press being used and other relevant factors such as press age. “At WAN IFRA 2017 we will be telling visitors about the enhancements that have been made to our metalbacked blanket range. We are increasingly involved in helping newspaper groups use blanket technology to reduce cost-per-copy on their presses. Our experts provide training on selecting the correct blanket, settings on the press, as well as the maintenance and storage of metal-backed products, which can have quite specific requirements.” “The number of blanket suppliers to the Indian printing industry is growing, but few of these companies provide any sort of training, advice or after-sales support. The blanket is crucial to the profitability of the press and it is not something that can be dropped off at the printer’s factory and forgotten about.” Trelleborg has developed several easy-touse, downloadable software tools, including a ‘configuration’ product that lets users select the correct blanket by entering the application sector,

such as web coldset, web heatset, single-width, double-width, combi or UV. There is also a dealer locator app, which provides a simple way of finding the nearest dealer. Distributors and customers can also benefit from the Trelleborg Printing Academy, which provides ready access to comprehensive technical details of products and applications in a straightforward presentation format for all newspaper application products. “A sound knowledge of the issues is becoming even more important because of the changes taking place in the industry. The increasing use of different stocks that have their own surface characteristics, the implementation of UV, the interest in low migration inks and high-density pigment inks, plus FM screening; all of these things have a major impact on the printing press and the blankets fitted to it,” concludes Bora, who has more than 25 years of experience in Offset Blanket technology for the newspaper sector. Trelleborg will have a team of experts on its booth no. 5.02 at WAN IFRA 2017, which takes place from 12 to 14 September in Chennai. Visitors will be able to discuss their current and future blanket requirements of their single-width, double-width and commercial heatset presses. The company has a well established network of experienced dealers throughout India that provide local, on-site support.

EAE wins key retrofit order from the Times of India The new retrofit project represents EAE’s biggest direct order to date from the country in South Asia.

The Times of India, India’s largest English-language daily newspaper, has charged EAE Engineering Automation Electronics with the modernisation of a newspaper press at its printing centre in Sahibabad, just outside Delhi. Times of India, a The Times Group publication, has a daily circulation of over 3 million copies. The newspaper company operates 13 printing centres across the country. At the site near Delhi, newspaper production takes place on four web presses. The portfolio includes the Times of India and Navbharat Times, both of which are published daily, as well as various other titles for Delhi and the surrounding area.

“The decision to equip the press with the most advanced control, drive and preset technology possible will profit us not only with higher availability but also with a leap in productivity.” Snehasis Roy, Technical Director, Times of India.

The company had already been thinking about modernising a manroland GEOMAN web press in Sahibabad, which was getting on in years, for some time. The situation became more urgent when technical defects and production stops started to become a regular occurrence at a time when several components of the control electronics were discontinued and it grew more difficult to get hold of spare parts. After sounding out the options in considerable depth, the newspaper company elected to cooperate with EAE. EAE’s retrofit experts will upgrade the web press – which has five four-high

towers, one double folder and eight reel stands – to the latest state of the art.

Reliable production for the next decade EAE will exchange the entire press and drive controls, all of the most important drives and the obsolete Interbus loop system. The existing PECOM system will be superseded by a modern EAE solution plus an EAE Print production planning and preset system. Three control consoles belonging to the very newest EAE Desk 7 generation will simultaneously replace the present PECOM press control consoles. The retrofit should guarantee reliable production of the newspaper web press and maximum availability for the next ten years.

“We opted for EAE, or rather QIPC-EAE India, because they’re a supplier with enormous experience in press retrofits. They were able to offer us a solution that is very much geared to standards and based on hardware which is freely available in the market. The decision to equip the press with the most advanced control, drive and preset technology possible will profit us not only with higher availability but also with a leap in productivity,” says Snehasis Roy, the Times of India’s Technical Director. “We were also persuaded by the fact that EAE presented themselves from the outset as a partner interested in long-term collaboration with us on a local level who would adopt a flexible approach to our specific needs.”

KMPA submits memorandum on GST to Minister of Finance On August 27th, KMPA (Kerala Masters Printers Association) submitted a memorandum to the Minister of Finance Dr.Thomas Isaac. KMPA was represented by S.Saji (President) along with R Gopakumar (Vice President) and Rajesh.G.( Hon Secretary). The memorandum highlighted the lack of clarity prevalent in the printing industry regarding GST. The association highlighted the difficulties of the printers due to the recent changed Taxes consequent upon the

GST implementation. The printing association also forwarded its request for uniformity of Taxes in the Printing sector. KMPA representatives expressed in detail the concerns of the industry and marked the meeting with the Minister being successful. Minister Dr. Thomas Isaac took keen interest in printers’ concerns and assured that he would look into the matter.

Key order in the Indian market A slightly unusual procedure was chosen regarding the execution of the retrofit work. Whereas EAE in Ahrensburg (Germany) will take care of the planning, software development and project-related coordination, the operational implementation in the field will be in the hands of QIPC-EAE India. QIPC’s Indian subsidiary will source the necessary hardware from the local market, then carry out the essential preassembly and testing and finally the installation. QIPC-EAE India will additionally provide primary service and support and set up a spare parts depot. “We’re delighted that the Times of India has put its trust in EAE’s retrofit expertise and standards based solutions by entering into a partnership with us,” comments Vijay Pandya, Managing Director & CEO of QIPC-EAE India. “This key order will help us demonstrate our retrofit capabilities to the whole of the Indian newspaper market. It’s also further proof that QIPC and EAE’s seamless cooperation is working in a global context.” Menno Jansen, Chairman EAE expressed his gratitude to Mohit Jain, Times group Executive President Supply Chain during his visit at EAE’s headquarter in Ahrensburg Germany. Thanks to EAE’s ingenious retrofit concept, all modifications to the newspaper web press will be undertaken in the midst of normal production, which will not experience hindrance in any way. The preparations at EAE began in June 2017 with the implementation phase for the Sahibabad retrofit to span between February and July 2018.

Dominion Packaging takes Flexo Printing to new speeds Advances with the installation of TRESU Flexo Innovator flexographic in-line press equipped with rotec High Speed Sleeves and rotec Atlas Adapters from Flint Group. Founded in 2004, Dominion Packaging, Inc. is a midsized packaging manufacturer with two sites in the Richmond, VA area with over 350 full-time employees generating an estimated $150 million in annual revenue. The company prides itself on providing among the highest quality folding cartons in the industry with personalized communication. With a culture of innovation, Dominion Packaging selected the latest technology in flexo printing to produce premium folding carton packaging for the tobacco, food and beverage markets when deciding its print direction. Its formula for success lies in the combination of state-of-the-art machinery and a market-focused strategy to provide exceptional product appeal. A key driver – to offer quality packaging at a modest cost – led the company to develop new technology using a Flexo press operation capable of replacing jobs that were previously printed on both Gravure and Offset presses.

The combination of sleeves and adapters provides optimal control of plate bounce by absorbing press vibrations and providing added stability, thus permitting the press to run at faster speeds while still allowing for a solid kiss impression.

The advancement is based on the successful installation of a TRESU Flexo Innovator press (FI1400-10, 55-inch, 10-units). The new Innovator is a flexographic in-line press equipped with rotec High

Speed Sleeves and rotec Atlas Adapters from Flint Group. This particular combination of sleeves and adapters provides optimal control of plate bounce by absorbing press vibrations and providing added stability, thus permitting the press to run at faster speeds while still allowing for a solid kiss impression. The unique polyurethane composition of the rotec High Speed Sleeve provides the compression necessary to reduce bounce-induced skipping (a common occurrence on press as speed is increased) and offers a wider impression latitude, which enables the printing of half tone images and solids on the same print deck with a consistent print quality throughout the job. Additionally, since the sleeve has a durable compressible surface, plates can be mounted to the sleeve using an inexpensive 5 mil transfer tape, rather than the more expensive cushion tapes. For even greater stability at high print speeds, the rotec Atlas Adapter with a special carbon fiber structure and a hard surface presents further vibration dampening characteristics and affords maximum print performance. been able to achieve at high press speeds with this particular combination of rotec sleeves and adapters.” According to Wes Johnson, Regional Sales Manager, Flint Group Flexographic Products, “The maximum line speed of a typical folding carton press would normally be around 1200 fpm, but we were able to employ a combination of the rotec High Speed Sleeves and rotec Atlas Adapters to allow for the production of quality product at the maximum speed of the equipment.” Dominion Packaging is probably the only folding carton producer using 150 LPI plates for this print segment, and this press could possibly be one of the fastest folding carton presses the industry has seen to date.”

range of products at the highest level of dot reproduction.” Butler continues, “Our solid ink laydown and excellent combination print are directly attributed to the success we have

The relationship between Dominion Packaging and Flint Group goes back for over 20 years, and Butler is quick to attribute the technical expertise of Wes Johnson as being “instrumental” to the recent developments made at Dominion Packaging.

Xitron Inks workflow development agreement with Liaoning Basch Digital Software will drive new digital label presses and Flexo/Resin/Thermal CTP Device Xitron, developer of RIP and workflow products for commercial, digital, and highspeed inkjet printing has announced an agreement with Liaoning Basch Digital for the development of a cross-product prepress workflow. The system will be designed for Basch’s Panthera 3322C colour inkjet label press, the 3326V digital inkjet varnish press, and will also be capable of driving the Panthera CTP line.

The Panthera 3322C uses the Memjet Sirius inkjet head and is capable of print speeds up to 18 meters per minute with a maximum web width of 330mm. Xitron’s Northstar RIP and workflow will handle job submission, job tracking, spot colour matching, label-based step-and-repeat, and variable data input, driving the press at full rated speed. “We’re extremely pleased to partner with Basch on this project,” commented Karen Crews, President of Xitron. “Our experience with other Memjet OEMs places us ahead of the curve in development of these systems, so time-to-market will be short. They will also be exhibiting at LabelExpo Asia in Shanghai beginning December 5th, where Xitron’s Northstar workflow will be driving multiple devices.

Beer and Beverage Label Printing: What you need to know! Filip Weymans, VP Global Marketing, Xeikon, in one of his series of blogs, dives deep into the characteristics of labels. Not one label is the same – different applications require different digital technologies. Whether it is for pharma, wine & spirits, durables, health & beauty, industrial chemicals or beverages, every label comes with its own aesthetic and functional requirements. Let’s dive deeper into the characteristics of each of these labels. In this article, we focus on beer and beverage label printing, a niche of label printing that requires a specific approach in order to get the desired white opacity level and look & feel of the end product. The no-label look, a capability provided by clear-onclear label materials, has transformed beer labels into a strong growth market for the self adhesive label market, at the expense of wet-glue labels. The growth of the clear-on-clear adhesive labels is driven by the fact that they provide more capabilities regarding aesthetics, variation in look & feel etc. The following paragraphs tell exactly which digital printing technology is most optimal to achieve the best result with these labels.

What’s important to remember is that when offset quality is required, dry toner is most appropriate and UV inkjet comes in play when very high gloss and a unique tactile impression are desired.

August 2017

Which beverage label type do you produce?

Beverage labels can be divided in two types. There are the craft beer labels, which are paper-based labels, with natural or coated paper facestock, commonly printed in 4-colour. The other type are premium labels, for which clear-on-clear materials and BoPP facestock are typical and high white opacity is a requirement to make the colour stand out. Regardless of the type, Xeikon recommends both dry toner and UV inkjet printing technology. So how do you know which technology is best suited for a specific beverage label project? This choice depends on a number of factors – here’s a guide.

pressideas/ plc

limit the maximum possible pigment load. However, inkjet inks are capable of achieving an opacity comparable to that of screen printing, provided the printhead features a low native resolution, producing a large-sized droplet, which allows for high ink lay-down.

#3 Look and feel

#1 Substrates Two factors determine if a printing technology is suitable for a certain substrate: adhesion (if and how well the printed image stays fixed to the substrate) and pigment penetration (if and how well the ink or toner penetrates the substrate). For beverage labels, adhesion should be high in different conditions (in a refrigerator, outdoor, in an icebucket…), while pigment penetration should be avoided at all cost as this reduces colour strength and implodes the colour gamut. The two common substrates consist of paper or BoPP facestock. Due to its chemical affinity dry toner is a great choice for both paper and BoPP facestock. It can be used without any coating or primer and still achieve good adhesion and no pigment penetration. UV-curable inkjet, due to its low viscosity (6 times lower than UV flexo), can penetrate paper so it is recommended to use a primer. This will improve the UV curing

process and ensure a proper image quality. For BoPP facestock you need to ensure a high enough surface tension to ensure a proper spread of the UV inkjet ink.

#2 White opacity For premium beverage labels (clear-on-clear labels) a sufficient level of white opacity is required. The opacity of white is determined by the concentration of pigments, pigment particle size and the layer thickness that can be achieved. Dry toner scores well on both accounts as the technology allows for thick toner layers. White dry toner combines the highest pigment load with the largest particle size, offering white layers of an opacity that is higher than that of liquid toner, in a single pass. For UV-curable inks used in single-pass inkjet systems, the pigment particle size should be small enough to avoid nozzle clogging. Also, the required viscosity of the inks does

Dry toner gives a matte impression which, by applying a varnish, can give a glossy impression. When offset quality is required this technology is preferable. UV inkjet gives a very high gloss and tactile impression, which can appeal to certain people. The image details are not as sharp as dry toner but this is not necessarily a requirement (‘Beauty is in the eye of the beholder’). The appearance of both technologies is not influenced when the labels get in touch with the water (condense) on the outside of the bottle. Taking into account these factors, both UV inkjet and dry toner are valid technologies. What’s important to remember is that when offset quality is required, dry toner is most appropriate and UV inkjet comes in play when very high gloss and a unique tactile impression are desired. If you want to find out more on beverage label printing, or learn more on the different technologies available in the market, make sure to check Xeikon’s White Paper: ‘Digital Label Printing Technologies. No one size fits all’. It’s free for download from the Xeikon website, and provides in-depth analysis of digital label printing technologies: dry toner and liquid toner electrophotography, UV-curable inkjet and water-based inkjet. IML Technology for food and nonfood applications Beck Automation presents four-cavity IML machines for coffee capsules at Fakuma 2017.

Fresh coffee straight out of a coffee capsule has been one of the most popular ways to make a good cup of coffee for years. The classic disposable coffee capsule’s job is actually quite varied: the coffee aroma has to completely develop even though the capsules have a long shelf life. The capsule has to convey the feeling of lifestyle and luxury you get from enjoying a good cup of coffee. It should also ensure brand recognition and provide information about the contents. Once used, the packaging should be disposed of easily while demonstrating that it is environment-friendly, both during manufacture and when in use. What might seem straightforward at first glance, is becoming increasingly difficult to communicate to consumers – a good example of this is aluminium

IML technology – the reference class Since IML is a very dynamic process, operational efficiency is the sum of all the machine’s high quality components.

“With such small packaging sizes, the challenge lies in label inserting precision, as well as an operatorfriendly concept.” - Nino Zehnder, Head of Sales, Beck Automation

First, the labels are sucked out of the label station. In the second step, the labels are placed on the cores and held in place by a vacuum. The cores move into the cavities to transfer the labels. In this phase, the labels are blown off against the vacuum, electrostatically charged and thus positioned in the mould, mapping the cavities as closely as possible and held in place. The level of process design and the quality of the labels are decisive for process reliability, reproducibility, part quality and cost-effectiveness. A high-quality automation system, which is equally convincing in terms of availability, process reliability, stability and longevity, is crucial for return on investment and the level of added value.

capsules. The environmental awareness of consumers has noticeably been on the increase in recent years. A multi-component injection moulding solution with barrier properties plus IML decoration could be just the right answer. This saves resources and gives the packaging a more premium look. IML

users know the traditional strengths of IML: visually appealing packaging. With this increasing demand in mind, Beck Automation set about developing an IML machine for high-quality plastic coffee capsules. The new machine shall premiere when it is presented to the public at the Fakuma 2017. Nino Zehnder, Head of Sales, Beck Automation: “The result is a highly dynamic, precise and operator-friendly machine for IML decoration. This way, the disposable coffee capsules are both more environment friendly and look more premium, too. The aroma of the coffee should not be inferior to market-driven solutions, but should even surpass them.”

The Single Serve Capsule IML Machine The exhibit at the Fakuma trade fair is a four-cavity IML machine. The machine architecture shows that machines with much larger numbers of cavities are also possible. For example, in 2016 Beck Automation successfully commissioned several solutions for 32+32 stack moulding machines. The company is currently completing a 32-cavity IML Single Serve Capsule machine. Nino Zehnder: “With such small packaging sizes, the challenge lies in label inserting precision, as well as an operator-friendly concept.

product’s functionality. Beck states that the packaging itself is less than 10% of the total weight of the product at a mere 1.35 g.

First References are promising In the USA, which is a huge market for disposable capsules, the trend towards environment friendly products is already well-established. Suppliers are therefore looking for alternatives to the high quality, yet environmentally problematic aluminium capsules or simple plastic solutions, which are unable to convey the lifestyle aspect of

We are talking about very small labels and ultra-lightweight components with extremely high production volumes. And, what’s more, it is an application for multi-component technology.” The coffee capsules shown are inserted into a multi-component, fourcavity mould from FostagFormenbau. Beck Automation states a target cycle time of < 5 s. The labels are produced by Verstraete, the Belgian IML label specialists. The moulding machine also includes a quality assurance module to perform barrier checks from IMDvista. ANetstal ELION 1200-250/55 serves as the injection-moulding system. It is fitted with servo-electric drives for all components and is absolutely clean and quiet in operation. Its compact design, high shot weight precision, rapid closing speed and reproducibility, make it a perfect match for Beck Automation’s IML machines. Multi-component technology makes it possible to manufacture coffee capsules with PP (polypropylene) in the outer layer and an EVOH inner layer. The barrier layer is responsible for the durability and aromaretention of the content, and thus for the

the product. IML, when combined with barrier properties, offers a new way to reposition disposable coffee capsules and to enhance the appearance of the product. Beck Automation solutions have been very well received by the company’s first customers in the USA. These suppliers are pleased with the functionality, look and environmental performance of the capsules, which they believe suit market demands. The output of a high-performance IML machine from Beck Automation also enhances added value.

FINAT and Labelexpo Europe -Driving the label industry agenda The flagbearers of the European label industry – the international label association FINAT and Labelexpo Europe founders Tarsus – are celebrating the 25thanniversary of their partnership this year at the biggestever Labelexpo show, taking place at the Brussels Expo, 25-28 September.

An industry initiative At the heart of their present co-operation is the establishment of the Labelexpo Advisory Board (‘LAB’), composed of representatives from Labelexpo organisers Tarsus, FINAT board members, and show exhibitors. In an industry that is continually growing and changing, the LAB’s key mission has been, and continues to be, to expand the event’s profile to include all the ‘new technologies’ that now form part of the definition of a ‘label’; and to make both exhibiting and participation in the associated events programme a truly special experience. Their efforts, coupled with the first results of long-term investment by the event venue, will deliver improvements in logistics, facility management, and visitor convenience for this year’s show, which features an awe-inspiring total of 700-plus exhibitors from more than 40 countries around the world.

On-site events The show itself is enhanced by a lively agenda of on-site workshops, seminars, and, of course, the presentation dinner at which this year’s Global Label Industry Awards will be presented. FINAT will be welcoming members, as well as potential association members, to their stand, 11A31, for refreshments, and to preview the new base of advanced online features which the members-only website offers today, along with their strong yearround events programme. This includes a series of webinars; FINAT’s biennial Technical Seminar next March, updating members on the state of the art of self-adhesive technology along the supply chain; its major annual opinion-leading event for senior managers, the European Label Forum in June; and, for young managers in the label industry’s many and varied disciplines, the

lively Young Managers Club Congress, taking place later in 2018.

European Digital Label Study Labelexpo Europe will also be the launch platform for FINAT’s Digital Label Study, an authoritative report, commissioned from LPC–specialised in research, technical PR, and commercial due diligence within the printing and packaging industries -which will offer a critical analysis of the current digital label printing technology landscape in Europe, as well as identifying trends and future projections relevant to digital label print across different regions and sectors. The report is based on a survey conducted with more than 100 label companies across Europe, who were asked questions on topics ranging from the profitability of their digital presses; their most significant challenges associated with digital label production; and the opportunities they see for digital label printing in the near and longer-term future.

‘Young Talent’ initiative FINAT will also present an update on the important topic of attracting ‘young talent’ to the labels and package printing industry. At the beginning of this year, FINAT launched an initiative, together with the German label association VskE and other national associations, with the objective of developing an industry campaign that can be instrumental in attracting the ‘next generation’ workforce for the label industry across Europe.

Recycling awareness A special feature on FINAT’s stand will, once again, be the Recycling Desk, at which visitors can obtain information about

the various recycling solutions for spent release liner, and where a special video will be launched to promote awareness among both users and manufacturers of labels concerning the necessity, and benefits of, secondary uses for spent liners.

Visions of (future) labelling On display on the FINAT stand will be the winning entries in this year’s prestigious FINAT Label Competition. Not only are these labels the best in their class, but what is equally interesting are the stories behind their success. FINAT will present a series of video-recorded interviews with the winning companies in the main category groupings, to provide a source of inspiration for continuous improvement and innovation which will be rewarded in future editions of the competition.

The Label Academy FINAT will also be encouraging participation in Tarsus’ growing Label Academy initiative – providing label and packaging industry technical training online in topic-specific modules, with the opportunity for students to acquire technical certification for each successfully completed module. Today, Label Academy certification is accepted around the world as a valuable, ‘industry standard’ qualification.

‘A must-attend event’ Comments FINAT Managing Director Jules Lejeune: ‘For all concerned in the label and product decoration value chain, from raw material supplier to brand owner and retailer, Labelexpo Europe 2017 is a must-attend event’.

Esko XPS Crystal exposure unit is a 2017 PIA InterTech Technology Award recipient Digitally controlled LED UV exposure systemmakes flexo plate production simple, consistent, and automated. considerable interest in not only the XPS Crystal, but the complete CDI Crystal XPS solution, integrating our CDI imager and XPS plate exposure systems.”

Esko announces that its XPS Crystal flexo plate exposure unit has received the PIA InterTech Technology Award. Since 1978, the InterTech Technology Awards have honoured the development of technologies predicted to have a major impact on the graphic communications and related industries. More than 80% of technologies that receive an award experience commercial success in the marketplace. The new, unique XPS Crystal, part of a complete automated platemaking system, is a digitally controlled LED UV exposure unit, providing nearly simultaneous main and back exposures and supports all photopolymer flexo plates. The XPS Crystal is the tenth PIA InterTech Award Esko has received since 2003. “We are excited that the XPS Crystal exposure unit has been honoured with a PIA InterTech Technology Award, and flexography continues to be acknowledged as a strong, viable print technology,” remarks Rory Marsoun, Esko VP Business Development, Flexo, Americas. “We are already seeing

“The judges praised Esko’s innovation that both streamlines flexographic platemaking— by automatically moving plates from the imager to the exposure unit—and improves plate consistency with UV LEDs, where the back and main exposures occur nearly concurrently,” says Jim Workman, Vice President of Printing Industries of America’s Center for Technology and Research.

A simple, consistent process with nearly simultaneous main and back exposures The new, unique XPS Crystal, ultimately part of a complete automated platemaking system, is a digitally-controlled exposure unit, supporting all photopolymer flexo plates. Plates are placed onto the glass surface, where very accurate back and main exposures—by patented LED UV light technology that allows very precise control— are conducted simultaneously. Nothing else is required from the operator. The consistent light source and main and back exposure (termed, by Esko, as nearly concurrent ‘dwell time’) deliver unmatched relief and image consistency combined with perfectly formed flat-top dots. As a result, these plates deliver the highest level of consistency and quality on press.

Flexo Plate Making Simplified Because the XPS Crystal system can be connected on one side to a CDI flexo plate imager and to the other by a plate processor, the flexo plate making process is automated and much simpler to use—and high quality, plate consistency is assured. The CDI XPS Crystal solution makes flexo platemaking a simple and controlled process with fewer manual steps and, thus, fewer chances for errors. Combined with Esko smart automated prepress workflows, it is now easier for flexo label printers, printers and converters to bring platemaking in-house to shorten their lead times and improve their press and finishing equipment uptimes. “In addition to the InterTech Technology Award, viewing products from the entire printing industry, the XPS Crystal has been recognized with the 2017 FTA Technical Innovation Award as a significant flexo product, and the Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen Red Dot Award: Product Design 2017, one of the most respected product global design competitions,” exclaims Philippe Adam, Esko Vice President, Marketing. “The XPS Crystal is truly a revolutionary product, and we are excited that others acknowledge its significance. With this innovative platemaking technology, the next few years promise to deliver an even greater share of print work to flexo.”

Today, the company’s client list includes all missionaries and catholic organisation such as, Holy Cross, Don Bosco, Auxilliam, St.Pauls and many others; most departments of the Government of Tripura such as, Police, Forest, Industry, Transport, Forensic, ICA, Health, Biodiversity, Pollution, Science & Technology and many more; ONGC; Tripura University; among others. “According to Roy Chowdhury, the latest trend is the demand for metallic colours. Ours is the only press in Tripura who works in special channels apart from four colours, capable of delivering spot effects of metallic gold and silver and also metallic red, green, blue and so on.” Surendra Singh Halsi, DGM – Digital Print

Enhancement and Finishing says, “It’s been a great achievement for us and it clearly portrays our long term commitment with the customer and wide foot presence even in every part of the country. Dumor and GMP range of products are world renowned and already proven products and we are proud to represent them in Indian printing and packaging market” Talking about the printing industry in Tripura, Tanmoy Roy Chowdhury, said, “Tripura is a scarcely populated state with 36 lakh people and it cannot boast of a high demand in printing industry. Hence, people do not invest in printing industry. But this has been a motivating factor for me as I have tried to garner this adverse condition as my booster. Since this industry is not in a lucrative position, I have taken it as a challenge to prove my passion in sustaining this industry and helping in its survival. I take it as an opportunity for proving my commitment to the society of this state. My small investment in this industry in an undeveloped place like Tripura is highly appreciated by society and people. This feeling of being able to serve the state in a small way gives me satisfaction.

hubergroup launches new, innovative flexo products Printing-inks manufacturer showcases its know-how at the DFTA autumn conference in Leipzig. This year’s edition of the DFTA Flexo Association’s (Deutschsprachige Flexodruck - Fachverbande.V.) annual industry conference will be covering topical issues and challenges that affect the corrugatedboard and flexible-packaging sectors. hubergroup will be taking this opportunity to showcase its current portfolio for flexographic applications to the visitors of this event. Four of the products being exhibited are of special interest to branded-goods manufacturers and printers, because they solve processrelated printing problems or open up new possibilities for packaging designers. Special-effect coatings appeal to end consumers not only at the visual, but also at the haptic level. Films with the right specialeffect coating can feel like paper and are consequently perceived as being of higher quality. Soft-touch coatings give the substrate a velvety or suede-like surface and the complete packaging a luxury feel. Highly pigmented halftone inks make it possible to create ever more realistic images on packaging, because the high pigment content facilitates ever finer screen rulings and resolutions. Printers can use screen rollers with smaller pick-up volumes that make it easier to print fine elements while still maintaining high colour intensity. The use of spot inks is no longer absolutely necessary since a four-colour set of high-pigment inks is capable of reproducing a greater colour space. Opaque white: The flexo printing process quickly reaches its ink-transfer limits whenever the colour white – that is so indispensable in packaging printing –

hubergroup is one of the world’s leading specialists for printing inks, coatings and press room auxiliaries, currently comprising 40 companies and 130 sites. With more than 250 years of experience, the family-owned enterprise has expertise in the printinginks industry and manufactures top-quality products for packaging, commercial and newsprinting. 2016 saw the Group, with its global workforce of more than 3500, generate sales worth some euro 820 million. is called for. The highly opaque white hubergroup will be presenting at the DFTA conference enables printers to achieve almost the same opacity levels as can be with the gravure process and prevents the package contents or substrate from shimmering through. hu-track is a hardware/software service package marketed by hubergroup that enables users to quickly check the quality of the inks they are using and to modify ink formulations directly on the press. This reduces the number of adjustments required to achieve the perfect colour, making hu-track the ideal solution for maximising production speed and minimising waste. The DFTA autumn conference is being held on 14 September 2017 at the Pentahotel Leipzig.

Cosmo Films Q1FY18 total revenue ups to 470cr.

Cosmo Films Limited is a global provider of films for packaging, labeling & lamination applications and synthetic paper. The company has declared its financial results for the first quarter ended June 30, 2017. The total revenue for the quarter ended June 30, 2017 increased to Rs.471 crores, from Rs.409 crores in Q1FY17. The increase in revenue could have been higher but for the de-stocking and deferment of purchases by customers in June in preparation for GST. The GST transition also affected the margins. The declining raw material prices led to one time stock loss of Rs.5.3 crores in the quarter. The company could partly compensate the above adverse impacts by more than 25% increase in speciality films and additional volume from the new line commissioned in Feb 2017. Commenting on the financial performance of the company Mr. Pankaj Poddar, CEO, Cosmo Films Ltd. said, “The company continues on path of enhanced focus on speciality films. GST implementation, being second significant event after demonetization within short time span, impacted volume and margins temporarily and is expected to get stabilized within Q2FY18. Further, the new line is expected to operate at full capacity from mid of Q2FY18 and should help improve the profitability.”

August 2017

Mimaki, manufacturer of wide-format inkjet printers and cutting systems, has announced the launch of a brand new approach to 3D printing with the Mimaki 3DUJ-553 UV LED printing solution. This is the world’s first 3D printer with over 10 million colours, enabling the production of colour-realistic signs, prototypes, parts, products and other 3D printed applications that eliminate the need for timeconsuming hand painting of 3D printed objects. “As the 3D printing market continues to grow, Mimaki has capitalised on an opportunity to bring a truly unique solution to the market,” says Ronald van den Broek, General Manager Sales at Mimaki Europe. “Other 3D printing solutions have two primary issues when it comes to creating 3D printed objects. First,

they cannot produce objects in photorealistic colour. This often requests that objects be hand painted, a time-consuming and expensive prospect. Secondly, most 3D printed objects require removal of stabilising fixtures before they can be used. This again takes time and risks damaging the object. With the Mimaki 3DUJ-553, both of these barriers are eliminated, since it can print photorealistic colour, choosing from up to 10 million different colours. And its water-soluble support material can easily be washed off without damaging the object. This enables the cost-effective production of exquisite 3D printed products with elaborate finishing. We believe this printer will be warmly welcomed by professionals in many industries, from signs & display graphics to education, healthcare, manufacturing, architecture,

construction and more.” Mimaki has a long history of bringing innovative inkjet printing solutions to the market, for the printing of everything from banners and dimensional signs to textiles and direct print to cylindrical objects. The company has brought to bear its deep knowledge and expertise in the development of the 3DUJ-553 full-colour 3D printer. It satisfies even the most exacting professional requirements for full-colour modelling of 3D objects of all types, with highly precise laydown of ink droplets and a choice of three dot sizes for modelling of colour gradations with less granularity. These 3D printed objects are also durable enough to withstand post-processing such as overcoating and attachment of screws and other fixtures. “We showed this as a technology demonstration at drupa 2016 to rave reviews,” Van den Broek comments. “And we have shown the printer and/or objects it has printed at a variety of shows and events since that time. Prospective customers tell us this is exactly the 3D printing solution they have been waiting for, and we expect to see fairly rapid uptake once it is commercially available by the end of this year. Customers will also be able to take advantage of Mimaki’s excellent service and support infrastructure to get up and running fast, and to ensure uninterrupted production to the fullest extent possible.”

The details: Focus on colour •

More than 10 million colours. With its UV LED curing method, the 3DUJ-553 is able to produce objects layer by layer and apply a final UV ink coating of approximately 22 microns using CMYK, white and clear inks, producing a finished object of exquisite quality. UV LED curing also applies minimal heat to the object. The printer exhibits fast startup times and minimal power usage, reducing the overall running costs. Extended colour gamut. This full-colour modelling approach is able to achieve 84% of the FOGRA 39L colour gamut and 90% of the SWOP gamut. A white ink layer results in objects featuring brilliant colours. Colour profiles. The 3DUJ-553 is the world’s first 3D printer to take advantage of colour profiles. This means not only accurate colour from the printer but also

allows the development of simulation profiles for accurate viewing of colour on a PC monitor. This ensures accurate colour specification before printing even begins, saving time and reducing waste. Add translucency with clear ink. Using clear ink adds an additional effect to 3D printed objects, especially if the object will be backlit. The combination of clear and CMYK inks opens the door to increased designer creativity. Excellent post-process performance. The inks used by the 3DUJ-553 contain an acrylic resin that produces hardness equivalent to ABS resin. This means that overcoating, drilling and attachment of screws can be accomplished without

damage to the object. It also adds superiorweather resistance, surface smoothness and strength to the object. Water-soluble support material. The 3DUJ-553 uses a water-soluble support structure which can be easily washed away with water. This enables removal of the support material even on very delicate objects, without the need to cut or scratch away support material as in other 3D printing processes. Camera for monitoring of modelling status. The 3DUJ-553 has a monitoring camera that enables users to observe modelling status, reducing modelling losses.

X-Rite and ColorPartner to automate Colour Measurement X-Rite Incorporated, global player in colour science and technology, has announced that it has joined forces with the German company, ColorPartner to help automate colour management for industrial inkjet applications. The unique solution combines the ColorPartner ColorScout A+ automated colour measurement table and X-Rite’s Ci6x family of sphere spectrophotometers allowing industrial printers to accurately measure colour on metallic, wood, plastic, ceramic and textured materials. The new Ci6X/ColorScout A+ solution will be made available through a variety of RIP manufacturers that support industrial inkjet output devices. “Inkjet technology makes it possible to print on a wide variety of materials, opening up new opportunities to industrial and commercial printers from fast fashion to flooring to packaging to home décor,” said Jan Keller, Vice President, X-Rite. “With higher material costs, printers cannot risk colour errors that may be inherent in a manual measuring process. The Ci6x/ColorScout A+ solution eliminates these potential errors and can quickly and easily pay for itself by ensuring less waste due to colour issues, increasing profitability and speeding time to market for brand owners and manufacturers alike.”

As the market moves to greater use of industrial inkjet, there is a growing need for an automated measurement solution that can quickly measure colour across flat, textured and reflective surfaces. The popular 45/0-based measurement devices used in graphic arts applications are ideal for smooth or matte surfaces but have limited capabilities for textured or reflective materials. The Ci6x/ColorScout A+ solution, in A3+ size (other standard sizes: A2+, A1+; others on request) accommodating materials up to 515mm by 310mm (20.3 x 12.2 inches) and up to 30mm (1.18 inches) (60mm (2.36 inches) optional) thick, is ideal for measuring colour on surfaces that do not perform well with a 45/0 spectrophotometer. As a sphere spectrophotometer, the Ci64 can accurately measure smooth, matte, reflective or uneven surfaces such as metallics, special effect finishes and textures commonly used in industrial inkjet applications from small label printing to LFP. Integration with colour RIPs

through X-Rite’s software development kit (SDK) will enable better colour calibration and profiling of industrial inkjet printing and deposition solutions. In addition to being more reliable, the Ci6x/ ColorScout A+ solution saves precious time in busy production environments. X-Rite tests reveal that it measures up to twice as fast as manual measurements, saving as much as an hour per 1,000 measurements. “The Ci6x/ColorScout A+ solution is truly rare in the market, as it incorporates a sphere spectrophotometer to handle thick and textured materials, as well as reflective surfaces,” said Ingmar Brumm, Managing Partner, ColorPartner.
