FROM THE EDITORS’ DESK Dear Readers, Team Pamex and IPAMA have reached an agreement for promoting Pamex 2020 among IPAMA members. Pamex 2020 is going to be held from 6-9 January 2020 at Bombay Exhibition Centre, Goreogan. In one of the events promoting Pamex 2020, The Association of Printers organized a seminar on protection and preservation of Environment at Batala in Punjab recently. More than 85 printers from the city and surrounding areas participated in the event. In another key event, 3 collocated events will cater the entire gamut of paper & all allied industries at one business platform. The three events - WORLD OF PAPER, CORRUGEX and TISSUEEX will co-locate with Paperex 2019, the 14th edition of the Paper Show scheduled during 3-6 December 2019 @ Pragati Maidan, New Delhi. Stan Avery was the inventor of the self-adhesive label back in the 1930s, and Fasson was originally the brand name for his sticky stuff (ie ‘fasten on’). The company he set up, now Avery Dennison, was, and is, a market leader in labeling materials – particularly self-adhesive. It is hardly surprising that such a company should year after year support an exhibition focusing on materials and machinery for this specific industry, says Ann Hirst-Smith, Managing Partner Ann Hirst-Smith Associates. The exhibition is Labelexpo and the much waited 40th anniversary edition of Labelexpo Europe 2019 is going to take place from 24 to 27 September 2019, at Brussels Expo. “Only the Labelexpo exhibition in its different regional contexts today maintains the focus on identifying and decorating a product – unlike the many ‘pack’- prefixed shows around the world today. It is a key location for brand owners to explore the endless options for enhancing the on-shelf look of their products, and also a wonderful opportunity for label converters to explore the opportunities presented by today’s label printing/imaging technologies to enhance their capabilities and expand their offering to their customers,” adds Ann Hirst-Smith. You may find more in our Labelexpo preview in this edition of PRESSIdeas. Sidel has expanded its Indian footprint. In July, Sidel opened its new office in India in the DLF Cyber City, Gurugram. This marks the latest step in Sidel’s strategy to establish dedicated offices in close proximity to its customers, offering global experience paired with local expertise. Highlighting latest technological upgrades are our stories on, Toray Waterless Offset, EFI Nozomi Digital Printer, Flint Group’s nyloflex XAH Digital Plate, Kodak Flexcel NX Ultra Solution, Xeikon 3030 and many more takes on the latest happenings in the global Printing and allied industries. Just don’t miss the latest at the largest global label industry showcase this month in Brussels.

Hand in Hand with Digital Transformation 2019 training year gets underway at Heidelberg. The training year at Heidelberg starts on September 1, 2019. Another 99 young men and women are embarking on their training or dual study courses at one of the company’s four sites in Germany in 2019. The digital transformation at Heidelberg and the vocational training there go hand in hand, with digital content becoming increasingly important in various areas and also making the training program more attractive. Virtual learning content and the use of cutting-edge virtual reality technologies are now standard in many occupational profiles. Heidelberg also regularly reviews the occupations for which training is available and adapts these to requirements. By now also offering training for budding IT specialists, the company is responding to the demand caused by the digital revolution. Three young people from the new intake for the 2019 training year will be starting out on this career.

Popularity of dual study courses continues to grow

The company’s biggest training site, which currently has a total of 242 trainees and students, including 75 from this year’s new intake, is WieslochWalldorf.

Key Notes : > Another 99 trainees start out at Heidelberg sites in Germany. > Increasingly digital content makes training portfolio more attractive. > Virtually all graduating trainees offered employment.

Based on the number of applications received, the growth in the popularity of dual study courses is continuing. “We put this down to the increased digital learning content in the various courses. A growing number of digital methods and tools have been introduced in all study and training courses in recent years,” says Andreas Blum, who is in charge of vocational training at the WieslochWalldorf site, focusing on commercial training, degree courses, and marketing. The dual study course in Digital Media/Media Management and Communication teaches technical principles such as web development and Internet technologies while also analyzing electronic operating concepts, especially e-commerce, mobile applications, and media strategies. In the main part of their course, students learn about media automation, together with planning and implementing media projects. The curriculum also includes quantitative and qualitative channel publishing and media research methods, such as customer process analyses, blogs and social networks, and online systems. The interdisciplinary Business IT course teaches key business management and information technology skills. Dual study course students tackle interesting projects – at the interface between technical and development departments, for example. As with all such courses, the aim is for students to draw

inspiration for their own ideas and then immediately put these into practice. Heidelberg currently has a total of four students per year on these two courses of study. “Not only digital technologies, but above all welltrained and highly motivated staff are key to a company’s successful digitization,” underlines Rainer Haus, who is in charge of vocational training and personnel development at Heidelberg. “Young employees, or digital natives as we also call them, are the ones who can bring experiences from their own digital environment into the business world and have the courage also to introduce disruptive ideas that drive companies’ progress with digitization. The wider range of IT-related occupations for which we offer training and dual study courses takes this trend into account,” he adds. The company’s biggest training site, which currently has a total of 242 trainees and students, including 75 from this year’s new intake, is Wiesloch-Walldorf. Once again, three of the five participants in the collectively agreed foundation year have been accepted to start training as future warehouse operators in the new training year. Heidelberg currently employs a total of around 340 trainees and students at its Wiesloch-Walldorf, Brandenburg, Amstetten, and Ludwigsburg sites. On account of the company’s demographics, almost all graduating trainees are being offered employment.

1000th Kodak CtP installation in the Sub-continent Kodak reaches milestone in the Indian Sub-continent with 1000th CTP Installation. In June 2019, Kodak crossed the mark of 1000 CTPs installed in the Indian Subcontinent, a milestone demonstrating that printers in this region are focused on achieving better quality with streamlined production and scalability to profitably grow their business. Within the prepress segment, Kodak holds the most robust portfolio in thermal technology. The brand provides prepress solutions right from equipment, software to consumables; catering to all segments of customers – Commercial, Offset Packaging, Newspapers, and Publishing. Kodak CTPs are a flagship product in the Indian print market. The company’s patented and award-winning KODAK SQUARESPOT technology create an accurate, stable dot, consistently and reliably, plate after plate. Unlike diode-based technologies, Kodak thermal laser heads are incredibly durable and provide stunning print accuracy up to 10-micron stochastic screening. Kodak’s robust hardware is backed by robust service and support backed by Kodak’s experienced team. Kodak’s newest KODAK TRENDSETTER and ACHIEVE Platesetters help printers reduce energy costs by using less power

while imaging. With market trends towards shorter runs, printers also need to produce more plates faster. Kodak has answered this demand by introducing W-Speed option for its TRENDSETTER Platesetters. With a throughput of up to 75 plates per hour (4-page) or 62 plates per hour (8-page), it’s unrivalled in its small footprint. Kodak has also introduced the 4,800 / 5,080 dpi High-Resolution option on TRENDSETTER Platesetters which enables features like microprinting, guilloche, security application, lenticular application. Kodak India’s growth in the India Subcontinent is supported by a network of trusted channel partners, including Insight Print Communications, Monotech Systems, and Fujito PTE. Kodak’s channel partnership strategy kicked off in 2002 when Insight Print Communications sold the first CTP to Pragati Offset in Hyderabad. Seventeen years later, the sale of Kodak’s 1000th CTP was completed by Insight Print Communications to a commercial printer based out of Gujarat that also uses KODAK SONORA Process Free Plates. The sale of 1001st Kodak CTP was recently made to Kalajyoti Hyderabad, South India’s

largest commercial print firm, through Monotech Systems, a partner since 2016. For more than two decades, Fujito PTE has supported Kodak to encourage the growth of Kodak prepress solutions in Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Myanmar. “Kodak and our dedicated channel partners crossed a significant milestone with the installation of our 1001st CTP across India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Myanmar,” said Bhalchandra Nikumb, Managing Director, India & West Asia Cluster, Eastman Kodak Company. “Thanks to the tremendous support of our partners in the region, Kodak has been able to help printers improving how they operate while becoming more profitable and sustainable.”

Toray waterless offset printing by Coldset Printing Partners Belgian company chooses waterless offset printing with Toray plates, leveraging print quality for business growth. Toray Graphics, manufacturer of waterless offset plate technology, recently enabled Coldset Printing Partners convert most of its operations to waterless offset printing using Toray IMPRIMA printing plates and Koenig & Bauer Cortina printing presses. The Belgian printing company, which serves its parent newspaper publisher as well as external customers that require heatset quality offset printing, was formed in 2010 as a joint venture to consolidate two printing plants. “We realized that newspaper printing would be under increasing pressure due to the growth in digital publishing,” said Paul Huybrechts, CEO. “Our primary printing plant was established in 1998 as a greenfield operation with four Koenig & Bauer presses using traditional wet offset. In 2013, we began looking at how to reinvent ourselves to better align with changing market conditions.”

“As a coldset web press operation, we discovered that with waterless offset printing, we could achieve near-heatset quality, vastly increasing our flexibility and the variety of applications we could produce.” - Paul Huybrechts, CEO, CPP

Huybrechts reports that through a combination of attending drupa, and speaking with suppliers to the industry and industry colleagues, the company determined that investing in two Koenig & Bauer Cortina waterless offset presses with Toray IMPRIMA plates was the best approach, and the new configuration was implemented in 2016.

“The primary driver was the quality we could achieve with this solution,” Huybrechts explains. “As a coldset web press operation, we discovered that with waterless offset printing, we could achieve nearheatset quality, vastly increasing our flexibility and the variety of applications we could produce.” Huybrechts points out that environmental considerations were also important in making the switch. “With waterless offset, we use no solvents and consume no water,” he says. “Plus our energy consumption is less that with conventional wet offset by about 3%, which really adds up. We have less cleaning operations and an overall smoother production process with less startup waste, often as little as 40 copies, important as run lengths continue to decline. What we hoped for has truly been realized with our Cortina presses and Toray plates.” The company has a stringent recycling program, uses papers with almost 100% recycled fibers, and has a windmill that produces about 50% of its energy needs, with a plan to add solar energy by the end of the year. “We are also located near our supplier mills,” Huybrechts states, “which means there is less distance to transport materials, which also helps keep our carbon footprint in line. All of this is behind our

Bauer and Q.I. Press Controls. This is a wellunderstood process in wet offset but new to the Cortina environment. It allows us to better control the temperature of the anilox and the density of the ink. The first tests are already done, improving the already-high quality level of the Cortina, and we hope to launch this by the end of the year. Not only does it improve quality, but it further automates Cortina presses, making the press operator’s job easier and reducing potential errors due to operator intervention. tagline, ‘Waterless Printing. Naturally.’, a key selling point for us both internally and with our third-party customers.” Also important to Huybrechts is Toray’s European manufacturing operation in the Czech Republic and its reliable partnership and short lead times. “I think Toray is a very professional manufacturer with top quality plates,” he says, “and its cooperation with Heights for processor development is also on the right track. Huybrechts also notes that the company’s night-time production schedule is full in the production of its parent publishing house’s newspapers, adding, “But 30% of our turnover comes from third-party printing. To enhance quality even further, we installed a lacquer/varnish unit on one of our Cortina presses. The quality element, in comparison with heatset printing, is more and more important for our business, which is one of the reasons we invested in waterless offset printing. We think the future is high quality. Customers are increasingly demanding, and if you want to keep and grow that business, you need to meet their quality requirements. The Cortina presses with Toray plates allows us to do that. Now our daytime schedule is almost full as well!” Huybrechts and his team are looking forward to hosting the Cortina users group meeting in September in Hasselt. “We’ll have some exciting news to share,” he says. “We have been developing closed-loop ink control for the Cortina in cooperation with Koenig &

The Hinojosa Group purchases a new EFI Nozomi Digital Printer for Cartonajes Bernabéu With this latest purchase, The Hinojosa Group has become the corrugated packaging manufacturer with the world’s largest direct-to-board digital capacity.

“Digital print adoption in corrugated is one of the most important and fastest-growing trends in the global print and packaging industries as it addresses longstanding inefficiencies, and EFI is committed to meeting global demand to help drive that transition.” -José Luis Ramón Moreno

Key Notes : > The Hinojosa Group continues to expand its single-pass digital printing capacity with the new EFI Nozomi C18000. > With its new purchase, The Hinojosa Group will have four EFI Nozomi printers in its facilities. > We will now have far greater flexibility, adaptability, quality and customization, among many other competitive advantages, says Cartonajes Bernabéu.

August 2019

The Hinojosa Group, one of the leading manufacturers of corrugated cardboard in Spain, is continuing to expand its single-pass digital printing capacity with the new EFI Nozomi C18000 for Cartonajes Bernabéu, the group’s largest production plant, with installation expected in September. With this new purchase, The Hinojosa Group will have four EFI Nozomi printers in its facilities. This consolidates the growth of the company’s digital strategy, and makes it the corrugated cardboard packaging manufacturer with the world’s largest direct-to-board digital capacity. As the CEO of The Hinojosa Group said, “Hinojosa has always aimed to be at the forefront and to implement cutting-edge digital printing as a way to differentiate our company from others; we could not have reached this point without such an important partner as EFI.”

The Hinojosa Group was one of the first companies in the country to opt for the digital transformation of its equipment, and the Cartonajes Bernabéu plant now has all the printing technology available on the market: flexo post-print and flexo pre-print, offset and now also digital printing. “Thanks to the incorporation of the EFI Nozomi C18000, we are expanding our technological capacity and will now have far greater flexibility, adaptability, quality and customization, among many other competitive advantages that we can offer our customers through digital printing,” highlights the CEO and Managing Director of Cartonajes Bernabéu. Single-pass Nozomi printers form part of a complete ecosystem for the production of corrugated cardboard provided by EFI, which includes the EFI Fiery NZ-1000 digital front end, which provides high

performance, outstanding colour precision, efficient job management and the capacity to produce versioned or variable jobs at high speed. EFI Nozomi C18000 enables cost-effective, high quality, direct-to-board digital printing and eliminates expenses and a great number of steps associated with plating, printing and lamination in traditional analogue production. Key features include: • Eliminate up-front make-ready plate costs, time and storage

Eliminate ink mixing and associated storage and labour Reduce labour costs and eliminate scrap wastes by printing direct to substrate

“The Hinojosa Group is one of the most innovative companies in the packaging sector, and this new acquisition reflects the group’s strong commitment to quality, sustainability and added value for its customers,” said José Luis Ramón Moreno, Vice President and General Manager of EFI Industrial Printing. “We are proud that Hinojosa values and trusts EFI’s broad vision as a leader of digital solutions in multiple markets, and has chosen us as a technological partner for the development of its digital strategy. Digital print adoption in corrugated is one of the most important and fastest-growing trends in the global print and packaging industries as it addresses longstanding inefficiencies, and EFI is committed to meeting global demand to help drive that transition.”

Hinojosa is the leader of Spain’s packaging sector and is considered one of the main family business groups in the country. The group has experienced significant growth in recent years. Innovation, specialization and a strong customer focus based on a close relationship are the pillars on which this growth is based. Hinojosa, which has twelve production plants in Spain, closed 2018 with a turnover of 399 million euros. Its international projection is supported by its membership of Blue Box Partners, the European alliance made up of four family-run companies that are leaders in the packaging sector in their home markets, and which have more than 8,000 employees.

The nyloflex XAH Digital, a hard round top dot plate with a smooth surface, is the latest addition to Flint Group’s fast-growing line of nyloflex thermal printing plates designed specifically for use in its nyloflex Xpress Thermal Processor. The new flexographic plate is formulated with a special AIF technology that keeps plates cleaner on press and results in faster print runs with fewer press stops. In addition, plate makers can expect to achieve all of the benefits of the nyloflex Xpress Thermal System – such as lower operating costs, higher sustainability and the quality of a solvent processed plate – producing plates in under one hour from imaging to finishing. The innovative plate is perfectly in line with the company’s promise of providing solutions which are “Better. Faster. Easier to use.”

Flint Group’s new Thermal nyloflex XAH Digital Plate increases productivity for Flexible Packaging and Tag & Label customers.

Key Notes : > Reduced complexity – nyloflex XAH Digital Plate is suitable for solvent based and UV ink systems. > Reduced operating costs – AIF (AntiInk-Fill) technology enables fewer cleaning stops. > nyloflex Xpress Thermal Processing System – delivers high quality thermal plates in less than one hour.

“Even though the market as a whole is rapidly moving toward inherently flat top dot plates, many of our customers are still using a substantial amount of standard digital plates with round top dots. There are also companies that have invested in flat top systems and prefer to use those systems along with surface screening to create a customized plate surface for their specific applications,” explains P.J. Fronczkiewicz, Product Manager Flint Group Flexographic. “We also incorporate our AIF technology into this plate to address the issue of plates filling in with ink during printing. This frustrating problem – which can lead to dirty print – can occur in flexible packaging printing with solvent based inks as well as with some UV inks used in the tag & label market. The advantage of AIF technology is that it provides outstanding sub-surface ink repellence to keep the plate screens and reverses clean during print runs, so printers have fewer press stops and can achieve faster press speeds,” concludes Fronczkiewicz. The nyloflex XAH Digital is a high durometer flexo plate that reproduces sharp details of the finest elements, screens, text and line work for superior quality print. The plate is perfect for applications with

solvent-based inks and UV inks used in the flexible packaging and tag & label markets, particularly those where special AIF technology is required, and for plate makers who have flat top systems already in place. The nyloflex XAH Digital Plate is optimized for use exclusively with Flint Group’s nyloflex Xpress Thermal Processing System. Incorporating a clever heating system that utilizes very low energy, the nyloflex Xpress Thermal Processing System is extremely effective at controlling the temperature of the plate surface; therefore, plates never overheat, and there is no need for extra components, such as a chiller or vapour handling system to deal with these effects. The result is that plate makers are able to reduce the energy consumption of plate processing by up to 88% versus competitive thermal systems, and up to 94% compared to solvent processing, with almost no volatile organic compounds (VOCs) or vapours generated. The nyloflex XAH Digital Plate coupled with the nyloflex Xpress Thermal Processing System offers an optimal combination of components that provides a more sustainable solution to flexo plate makers and supports the printing industry in meeting its sustainability goals. nyloflex XAH Digital Plates are commercially available in 1.14 mm (0.045 in.) and 1.70 mm (0.067 in.) thicknesses and in varying plate sizes. The nyloflex Xpress Thermal Processing System is available in either F IV (1067 x 1524 mm / 42 x 60 in.) or the soonto-be released F V (1270 x 2032 / 50 x 80 in.) format sizes.

Clean And In Balance With The Environment - Explained by Dr. Dieter Niederstadt, Technical Marketing Manager. As regulatory agencies around the world place more stringent focus on environmental sustainability, Asahi Photoproducts continues to innovate platemaking technology with a solution that aims to produce plates in an office-type environment, processing photopolymer reducing VOC’s into the atmosphere. CleanPrint plates use less ink, emitting fewer VOCs in the pressroom. There is less makeready waste and waste due to plate cleaning press stops, adding even more environmental sustainability to the process. And more efficient throughput means less energy consumption. Not only does this help with regulatory compliance, it creates a safer, cleaner work environment for employees. In fact, CleanPrint plates can be produced in an office-type environment, processing photopolymer without introducing VOC’s into the atmosphere.

CleanPrint plates offer a win/win solution to flexographic platemaking. Flexo printers/ converters win by increasing capacity and reducing costs. Brand owners win by reliably acquiring extremely high-quality packaging

that sets them apart on the shelf without incurring excessive costs. Everyone wins by making the flexographic printing process more environmentally sustainable.

Could sustainable foods save the Amazon? Geopolitics are blamed for fuelling fires in the Amazon, however there are also solutions from sustainable foods. Reducing meat intake or switching to plantbased foods will lower demand. Apart from the direct impact on beef sales, it will also reduce the need for soya beans which are a major component of animal feed.

Brazil is under the spotlight again as parts of the Amazon are burning. With much of the rainforest being cleared for agriculture, Ecovia Intelligence believes some of the solutions are with sustainable foods. It is estimated that up to 80 percent of forests are being cleared by cattle ranchers. Brazil is already the world’s largest beef exporter, shipping 1.6 million tonnes per year. There are calls to stop beef imports from Brazil until there is a moratorium on deforestation. At the G7 Summit, there were threats of halting the EU-Mercosur trade agreement because of the burning Amazon. The rise in demand for soya beans is also linked to deforestation. Brazil is seeing a surge in exports to China, which has imposed tariffs on American agricultural products. The prolonged US-China trade war is making Brazilian growers ramp up production. This year, Brazil has overtaken the US to become the world’s largest producer. Although soya beans are no longer grown on deforested land, cattle ranchers in the cerrado region (south and east areas of the rainforest) are moving out to make way for soya bean cultivation. Geopolitics are blamed for fuelling fires in the Amazon, however there are also solutions from sustainable foods. The starting point is consumer diets. Agriculture is the single biggest contributor to greenhouse gases, with livestock having the largest share.

Switching to sustainable meats is also encouraged. A range of organic, freerange and certified humane meats are now available. Initially launched in Europe and North America, such schemes are gaining traction in Brazil, Asia and other parts of the world. Sustainability schemes like the Brazilian Roundtable on Sustainable Livestock also ensure that cattle are not grazed on deforested land. In Brazil, some retailers are using electronic tagging to ensure their beef is fully traceable and not produced by rogue ranchers. Ecovia Intelligence also calls for greater investment in regional markets. Europe imports significant volumes of soya beans and agricultural commodities, which are used in plant-based foods as well as by livestock farmers. By raising soya bean production in Europe, food producers will be less reliant on imports. Sustainability standards like the ProTerra Foundation and Danube Soya also play a role by ensuring traceability in soya bean supply chains. The biggest change however is likely to come from consumer education. Palm oil, also linked to deforestation, has seen a backlash in recent years from consumers who associate it with the endangered orangutan and burning forests. Retailers and food companies, including Coop (Italy), Iceland (UK) and Barilla (Italy) have responded by replacing palm oil in their products. Consumers are actively looking for ‘palmfree’ products; Launched in August 2017, the International Palm Oil Free Certification Trademark now has almost 1,100 certified products.

Major sustainability issues in the food industry, such as plant-based foods, sustainable soya schemes, reforestation and traditional agricultural methods, sustainable meat production, organic supply chains, and ethical consumerism will be featured in upcoming editions of the Sustainable Foods Summit… • Latin American edition: 29-30 November 2019, São Paulo • North American edition: 22-23 January 2020, San Francisco • Asia-Pacific edition: 30-31 March 2020, Singapore

The Sustainable Foods Summit The aim of the Sustainable Foods Summit is to explore new horizons for eco-labels and sustainability in the food industry by discussing key industry issues in a highlevel forum. The 5th Latin American edition will take place in São Paulo on 29-30th November, the 10th North American edition in San Francisco on 22-23rd January, and the 3rd Asia-Pacific edition in Singapore on 30-31st March.

Ecovia Intelligence Ecovia Intelligence (formerly known as Organic Monitor) is a specialist research, consulting & training company that focuses on global ethical product industries. Since 2001, it has been encouraging sustainable development via its services portfolio: market research publications, business & sustainability consulting, technical research, seminars & workshops, and sustainability summits.

The prolonged burning of the Amazon could bring another wave of consumer boycotting, with Brazilian beef and agricultural products coming under scrutiny. Sustainable foods can provide solutions however the power is increasingly with ethical consumers.

Michelman’s DigiPrime primers offer digital versatility for a broad array of end-use applications. Many Michelman primers have recently passed ecotoxicity, heavy metals, and fluorine content testing according to ASTM and the European Committee of Standardization for use in compostable packaging. Also, for HP Indigo digital press owners expanding into markets such as home and personal care, Michelman is featuring DigiGuard 901 for Pack Ready for Labels, a strengthener for HP Indigo validated UV OPVs used with Michelman’s in-line primers, which enables enhanced water, chemical, and thermal durability. JetPrime, Michelman’s brand of primers for inkjet, includes JetPrime WB 1100 for pigmented waterbased inkjet printing applications. Because Inkjet technology offers the advantage of printing larger formats on a broader range of substrates, this technology, for coated offset substrates, is useful for high-speed commercial printing applications such as folding cartons and corrugated.

In conversation with Michelman President and CEO at Michelman, Steve Shifman, in an interview, as they mark 70 years, sharing about how the industry has changed and what the future holds.

Happy birthday! Tell us about your company milestone. Steve Shifman: We just celebrated our 70th birthday. We are excited about the growth of our company over that time which has led us to where we are today. Our company purpose revolves around Innovating for a Sustainable Future. We now have production facilities not just in North America where we were founded, but also in Europe and Asia, product development and technical service centers in several major global markets, and a worldwide team of highly trained business development personnel.

That allows us to serve the needs of our customers and help solve challenges for brand owners and consumers worldwide. Michelman‘s environmentally conscious solutions protect and enhance the materials that shape our world - in addition to solving printing, packaging and label challenges with environmentally friendly chemistries, we are helping grow food and keep it fresh, making vehicles lighter and more fuel efficient, and shielding our homes from the elements.

How has the industry changed in that time and how has Michelman responded to that? Steve Shifman: The rapid and everchanging growth of digital printing and the increased number of vendors that serve this market has been remarkable. While Michelman has provided print receptive chemistries for many years, the rise of digital technology has driven us to invest and innovate so that we can serve all segments of the supply chain, including film and paper makers, converters, label producers, and printers. Moreover, we have made it a priority to help the entire industry grow with our primers for Electroink and water based and UV inkjet technology. In addition, we have added overprint varnishes for digital printing to our product line to help digital labels be appropriate for applications that need to be more robust.

What are you showcasing at Labelexpo Europe 2019? Steve Shifman: Michelman is offering Labelexpo Europe 2019 attendees a selection of water-based in-line and off-line primers, and overprint varnishes for both HP Indigo and inkjet-based digital printing platforms. Our range of water-based and UV-based brands for digital presses include DigiPrime primers for HP Indigo, JetPrime primers for inkjet, and DigiGuard for OPVs. Many of our DigiPrime solutions have recently passed ecotoxicity, heavy metals, and fluorine content testing according to ASTM and the European Committee of Standardization for use in compostable packaging. One of our JetPrime solutions includes JetPrime WB 1100 for pigmented water-based inkjet printing applications. Because Inkjet technology offers the

advantage of printing larger formats on a broader range of substrates, this technology is useful for high-speed printing applications such as folding cartons and corrugated.

Have you exhibited at Labelexpo Europe before? Steve Shifman: This will be our third time exhibiting. The show is a great venue to connect with our existing customers and partners, and to help provide education to those we can bring new solutions to.

How do you think the show has changed since you’ve been involved, and what have been the highlights? What role has it played in the label and package printing industry? Steve Shifman: Labelexpo Europe keeps growing as more vendors enter the digital space, and as ongoing technology development continues to expand the industry. The increased number of exhibitors, technology types, end-to-end solutions, and collaboration across supply partners continues to push Michelman to think big, innovate, and enable our solutions across many formats.

What key trends are likely to have an impact on the region in 2019, and how do you think the industry will change in the next few years? Steve Shifman: We see more printing

that all substrates are ready for print, regardless of source, print engine, and ink. Labels also need technical solutions for specialty applications that require increased durability, heat resistance, and chemical resistance among other areas. We also of course see more focus on sustainability, with a priority to develop compostable and recyclable solutions.

What message do you have for visitors to the 40th anniversary edition of Labelexpo Europe 2019? Steve Shifman: First off – Happy 40th Birthday to Labelexpo! Just like Michelman, the global label industry has undergone significant changes over the years, including globalization, digitization, environmental sustainability pressures, workflow automation, and changing consumer demand. These changes continue to provide both the label industry and Michelman plenty of opportunities to develop solutions to reduce raw material and energy usage, increase recycling, further improve production efficiencies, and create better ways to package and identify goods. Our purpose is Innovating a Sustainable Future, and this purpose aligns to the future of the dynamic label industry. We are excited to collaborate with all members of the industry’s value chain to provide innovative solutions that improve both the lives of consumers and our planet.

Looking back over 40 years of Labelexpo and the industry Ann Hirst-Smith, Managing Partner Ann Hirst-Smith Associates, and previously with Fasson, tells what it was like at the very first Labelexpo show back in 1980, and how the industry has changed since then… You were at the very first Labelexpo back in 1980 with Fasson (which then went on to become part of Avery Dennison). Tell us about that first show… Ann Hirst-Smith: Right in the centre of London,

“I personally believe that the industry needs to really focus on the fundamentals of design and typography in the face of the digital revolution. This presents a huge learning opportunity, and the industry needs to respond so as to futureproof itself, because digital is here to stay!” – Ann Hirst-Smith

Key Notes : > With the first show with only 44 exhibitors, the Labelexpo has grown with the labeling industry, and has also played a major role in growing the industry itself. > In 1930 Stan Avery invented self-adhesive label with Fasson (i.e ‘fasten on’) being the original brand name. > Labelexpo’s 40th anniversary edition to present a full, in-depth, unmatched picture of a key aspect of today’s global packaging market.

30

August 2019

it was an indicator for me that the then self-adhesive label industry was on a roll. Although there were only 44 exhibitors, including Fasson, at the time, this really captured an expanding niche sector. As one of Labels & Labelling magazine’s first advertisers when I was Marketing Services Manager of Fasson UK back in the 1970s, I was experiencing the excitement surrounding self-adhesive labels, as the industry itself was experiencing enormous growth, and enormous interest. The advent of Labelexpo as a dedicated labels show was proof – and it showed the packaging industry and the brand owners just what they could gain from this amazingly flexible labeling method.

What is it that kept Fasson/Avery Dennison coming back every time? Ann Hirst-Smith: Stan Avery was the inventor of the self-adhesive label back in the 1930s, and Fasson was originally the brand name for his sticky stuff (ie ‘fasten on’). The company he set up, now Avery Dennison, was, and is, a market leader in labeling materials – particularly self-adhesive. It is hardly surprising that such a company should year after year support an exhibition focusing on materials and machinery for this specific industry. After all, Labelexpo represented – and still does – a fantastic opportunity to showcase the continuing innovation of Avery Dennison’s many labelstocks. And even in a company with business sites around the world, Labelexpo for sure represents the annual coming together of all the professionals, and their companies, in labeling and packaging. In other words, it is the established and excellent global customer and supplier meeting point.

How do you think Labelexpo – and indeed Labelexpo Europe - has changed over the last four decades, and what have been the highlights? What role has it played in the label and package printing industry? Ann Hirst-Smith: Labelexpo has grown with the labeling industry, and has also played a major role in growing the industry itself. This is now a combination

of innovation in imaging technologies, printing equipment, labeling materials, and in ‘add-ons’ such as RFID labels, packaging personalization, and brand owners’ one-to-one relationships with customers via such devices as QR codes and other on-pack augmented reality devices. Only the Labelexpo exhibition in its different regional contexts today maintains the focus on identifying and decorating a product – unlike the many ‘pack’prefixed shows around the world today. It is a key location for brand owners to explore the endless options for enhancing the on-shelf look of their products, and also a wonderful opportunity for label converters to explore the opportunities presented by today’s label printing/imaging technologies to enhance their capabilities and expand their offering to their customers.

How has the industry changed in the last 40 years? Ann Hirst-Smith: The label industry, while still centered on self-adhesive labeling, is now a much broader arena, embracing (as well as glue applied labels) the sleeve labeling technologies, flexible packaging, direct-to-container print, and other options – and the label converter has been able to

pressideas/ event preview

expand his offering to brand owners thanks to this broadening arena. Multi-versioning of brand labels in different language editions; security labelling options (RFI); QR codes and other electronic contact points with the consumer have expanded the role of the label considerably. Sustainability is, of course, a real issue today, and while there were initial questions about recycling spent release liner and label matrix waste, the industry now has a valuable and established pathway to successful and appropriate recycling of what, in the packaging world, is actually a very small – but, in the case of release liner base, high value for second-life use – ‘waste’ supply chain. And the major labelstock manufacturers are all today offering sustainable facestocks and environmentallyfriendly adhesives. What key trends are likely to have an impact on the region in 2019, and how do you think the industry will change in the next few years? Regionally in Europe, 2019 may present

some problems for label converters in panEuropean business as a result of Brexit, but the label industry remains a key performer in the branding of products, identification of key product factors for consumers, and in response to legislation (such as food safety concerns and recyclability of packaging). None of these concerns are going to go away in the future, so the label industry’s future is absolutely safe. As FINAT are emphasizing, we are at a point where the ‘old guard’ who built up the self-adhesive label industry are now entering retirement, so there is a real issue surrounding recruitment of young people to the label printing industry, at a time when technology and the Internet of Things appear to be presenting so many attractive career alternatives. As a result, I personally believe that the industry needs to really focus on the fundamentals of design and typography in the face of the digital revolution. This presents a huge learning opportunity, and the industry needs to respond so as to futureproof itself, because digital is here to stay! Indeed, the imaging options for label

production continue to grow exponentially, and the press manufacturers across all the disciplines are also creating extensive innovations.

What message do you have for visitors to the 40th anniversary edition of Labelexpo Europe 2019? Ann Hirst-Smith: This edition of Labelexpo Europe will give visitors a real buzz and is not to be missed! Combining the very best of all the many elements of the supply chain, it is an incomparable state-ofthe-art picture of a core feature of today’s global packaging market. From substrate manufacturers to press and production ancillary manufacturers, MIS management information systems, advanced ink technologies, to leading specialist converters – they will all be there at Labelexpo’s 40th anniversary edition, presenting a full, indepth, unmatched picture of a key aspect of today’s global packaging market.

Shorter setup times and new quality assurance options in focus BST eltromat and Nyquist Systems present the initial results of their collaboration with HYBRID Software for quality assurance in narrow-web production processes. At the upcoming Labelexpo Europe, BST eltromat International and Nyquist Systems will show new options for web monitoring and 100% inspection with the systems in the TubeScan family. Nyquist Systems has been part of the BST Group since the beginning of 2019. Under the slogan “perfecting your performance,” BST eltromat and Nyquist will be exhibiting the current results of their collaboration with HYBRID Software at two exhibition booths in hall 5 (booths D23 and E05). HYBRID Software is one of the world’s leading providers of innovative solutions for PDF-based pre-press-stage workflows and linkups to management information systems (MIS). The collaboration has enabled the two companies to considerably simplify and speed up setup processes in label printing (including quality assurance). Visitors in Brussels will also see the latest options for the QLink workflow, which integrates quality assurance into the pre-press stage, printing, and assembly. More detailed technical options and features for the TubeScan product range will be shown at the Nyquist booth. Alongside 100% inspection, the BST eltromat booth will also be presenting the company’s entire range for quality assurance in narrow-web processes – from web guiding, web monitoring, and register control to colour measurement, colour management, and workflow solutions. “At Labelexpo Europe, we want to talk to our customers and interested visitors in detail so that we can explore their individual requirements and show them the latest options for quality assurance,” said Nyquist Systems CEO Dr. Stephan Krebs. He would like to invite visitors to join him in in-depth technical discussions around the latest trends in label and packaging production using narrow-web production systems. “In addition to producing printed materials with consistently high quality, other key topics for us include the consistent interconnection and automation of the machines and systems involved in the production processes in the spirit of smart factories.” The new option of PDF comparison for print jobs directly in the printing machine

is just one of many exciting developments produced by the close collaboration with HYBRID Software. With the PDF option, machine operators can ensure that their printing systems produce perfect quality instantly. Machine operators will no longer have to scan proofs and then compare them to the specifications from the pre-press stage. Trips to the scanner and back – and the time involved in that process step – are things of the past. Label producers are printing faster than ever, and reducing the amount of waste they generate at the same time. This is possible because the PDF files for print jobs that the pre-press stage creates using PACKZ from HYBRID Software contain all the relevant parameters, including the requirements for inspecting the jobs that need to be printed. This also applies to repeat lengths, N-up allocation, and defining the inspection zones. The pre-press stage is also able to define different inspection requirements for each zone, making them more or less stringent as necessary. For example, selected zones can be inspected in more detail than less critical zones. A highlight: All objects can now involve dynamic, variable data such as different barcodes or alphanumerical – even randomized – sequences. During the setup process, the actual print results are compared to the specifications in the PDF files right in the printing machines and corrected by the machine operators as required. Nyquist Systems will demonstrate these options at LABELEXPO EUROPE using a workstation and a bidirectional assembly machine that fulfills pharmaceutical industry requirements.

topics here are integration with customer ERP systems, the expanded options offered by the new, 4k high-resolution area scan camera, and the new Contour Light illumination option. This laterally directed light source can be used to make the outlines of transparent labels visible on paper or plastic carriers. The TubeScan range is known for diffuse standard background illumination, background illumination through the web, and UV illumination for security features, etc. In addition to the new contour light, it also features three other independent illumination sources that cover a number of different web monitoring and 100% inspection requirements. “Thanks to its integration into the BST Group, Nyquist Systems now has access to additional resources for continuing to evolve the TubeScan range in collaboration with BST eltromat. This will generate a continuous flow of new opportunities for our customers to optimize their production processes and in turn, cater to the latest requirements of their own customers with forward-looking solutions for quality assurance. That is also a message that we would like to pass on at our two exhibition booths at this year’s LABELEXPO EUROPE,” explained AnneLaureen Lauven, Head of Marketing at BST eltromat.

The latest versions of the QLink workflow and TubeScan systems will be presented live on rewinders at both booths. The main

PrintFlat removes banding on inkjet output Global Graphics Software receives coveted InterTech Award for second year in a row. PrintFlat, the software developed by Global Graphics Software to remove banding in inkjet printing, has been awarded a Printing Industries of America InterTech Technology Award. This award places Global Graphics Software in the rare position of having its technology honoured for two consecutive years. Justin Bailey, managing director of Global Graphics Software, says, “this is a truly outstanding achievement by our development teams. PrintFlat is an exciting technology that I believe will be a game changer in digital inkjet. Banding has been a problem that printers have been putting up with for too long, having to accept that some jobs just can’t be printed with inkjet. PrintFlat changes all this by solving the banding issue in software, opening up the whole print market to the benefits of digital inkjet.” PrintFlat software masks the banding or nonuniformity in inkjet output that is caused by variations in printheads as they begin to wear or are replaced. It can even compensate for manufacturing differences between new printheads.

One of the printers to benefit from PrintFlat is Ellerhold AG, the leading poster printing house in Germany. Maximilian Ellerhold, the CEO, said “when the quality was ‘not passable’ for difficult jobs, for example images with lots of blue sky, it is now very acceptable, even for the most difficult jobs. Any residual visible banding has been removed. We are now achieving 100% customer satisfaction and have increased our market share of outdoor advertising products in digital printing”. James Workman, Vice President for Printing Industries of America’s Center for Technology and Research said, “Once the judges saw the process and the dramatic difference that PrintFlat makes, they knew it was an innovation that deserved recognition.” PrintFlat works by creating a customised calibration based on measurements from a press. It can be applied to any inkjet technology and print industry workflow, can be added to presses already on the market, or incorporated into an inkjet press that’s still on the drawing board.

Global Graphics has a long history in screening innovation dating back to its patented FM or stochastic screening technology of the 1990s. In the age of digital printing, and inkjet in particular, Global Graphics has developed new screening technologies from the ground up in response to press manufacturers’ concerns about image quality in single pass inkjet applications. Tom Mooney from Global Graphics will be presenting “Streaming print data directly to printhead electronics” at The IJC, 29-30 October 2019 in Düsseldorf.
