Heidelberg sets sales growth target of € 2 billion - starts new financial year with high order volume and improved operating profitability. Heidelberg has made a positive start to financial year 2021/22 (April 1, 2021 to March 31, 2022). Thanks to a broad market recovery in virtually all regions and growing successes from the Group’s transformation strategy, the company has been able to deliver the promised improvements in sales and operating profitability in the first quarter. Sales for the quarter increased by around a third compared with the equivalent period of the previous year, from € 330 million to € 441 million. EBITDA, which was influenced in the equivalent quarter of the previous year by high earnings of € 73 million from the reorganization of retirement provision and the widespread use of short-time working, improved substantially on an operational level to € 15 million. Thus, despite clearly reduced sales, the figure for the period under review even exceeded the pre-crisis level recorded in FY 2019/20 (€ 11 million).
Buoyed by the global economic recovery and the notable improvement in operating profitability, we are also very optimistic about meeting the targets announced for the year as a whole.” - Heidelberg CEO Rainer Hundsdörfer
Key Notes : > Sales for the first quarter increased from Euro 330 million (same period previous year) to Euro 441 million. > Marked uptick in demand for innovative new products such as the Speedmaster CX 104 universal press. > Expects to continue building on its commanding market position in China, the world’s number one growth market.

“As demonstrated by our encouraging initial quarter of financial year 2021/22, Heidelberg is really delivering! Buoyed by the global economic recovery and the notable improvement in operating profitability, we are also very optimistic about meeting the targets announced for the year as a whole,” reports Heidelberg CEO Rainer Hundsdörfer. Confidence regarding financial year 2020/21 as a whole is being fueled by a broad market recovery that, along with orders from the successful trade show in China, has led to incoming orders of € 652 million – an increase of some 89 percent compared with the equivalent quarter of the previous year. Given the marked uptick in demand – especially for innovative new products such as the Speedmaster
CX 104 universal press – Heidelberg is convinced it can continue building on the company’s marketleading position in China, the world’s number one growth market. Based on solid economic development, Heidelberg is expecting the profitable upward trend to continue in subsequent years, too. This is due to the company’s implementation of realignment measures, the focus on its profitable core business, and the expansion of growth areas. Cost savings of some € 140 million are predicted during financial year 2021/22 as a whole. The potential for sustained growth and increases in value is based primarily on opportunities in packaging printing, digital business models, business in China, and new technology applications. Heidelberg aims to double its Wallbox capacities in the e-mobility sector this year to meet the dynamic growth in customer demand. With third production line being taken into operation – despite the sums being invested in this expansion – the company’s e-mobility business is already turning a profit. “The enormous efforts we have made to transform the company are now bearing fruit. Thanks to the expected improvements in our operating result, the significant free cash flow potential, and a historically low level of debt, we are very confident in financial terms, too, that we can realize our huge opportunities for the future. It’s many years since Heidelberg was last in this situation,” adds the company’s CFO Marcus A. Wassenberg. Heidelberg recorded sales of around € 441 million for the first quarter of FY 2021/22, which was far better

Incoming orders climb by close to 90 percent (compared with the equivalent period of the previous year), from € 346 million to € 652 million. This has increased the order backlog to € 840 million.
The company even improved on EBITDA as recorded in the corresponding quarter of financial year 2019/20, i.e. prior to the coronavirus pandemic (€ 11 million, including the effects of restructuring), despite a lower sales figure than in that year.
Despite the continuing uncertainties regarding the COVID-19 pandemic, Heidelberg is standing by its targets for financial year 2021/22. The company is anticipating an increase in sales to at least € 2 billion (previous year: € 1,913 million).

Evaluation of paper packaging for aluminum foil and laminated paper foil Can wood fibre-based packaging solutions reduce the environmental footprint of plastic-based products. With more use of Plastic and its increasing presence in environment, Paper Packaging as an option to avoid use of plastic is evaluated in this article. Historically, papers have been used in flexible packaging for many applications. Wood fiber-based packaging solutions, as compared to 100% plastic based products, have several advantages from an environmental perspective, for instance, more than 90% of plastics can be replaced on average and the environmental footprint is lower than the plastic alternatives. Polymeric coated fiber and paper products are widely recyclable and fit well in established recycling systems. They can be used as raw materials to produce new renewable products, such as magazine paper, paper bags, secondary packaging or corrugated board packaging. Polymeric coatings can be produced from renewable as well as fossil-based sources.
When your product is properly packaged, you not only increase the quality of your product, but are also able to market and promote your brand to the targeted market.
Key Notes : > Increasing use of plastic and its impact on environment. > Paper packaging as an alternative to plastic based materials in packaging. > Paper meets most criteria of an ideal packaging material – machinability, printability, easy availability and disposability.

August 2021
Aluminium foil is an important material in laminates and has wide application in food packaging. Its barrier function against the migration of moisture, oxygen and other gases, and volatile aroma, as well as against the impact of light is generally higher than any plastic laminate material. Therefore, aluminium foil is used in the laminates when insufficient barrier properties are the limiting factor for shelf-life stability of food.
There are reasons why paper-based packaging, otherwise known as paper containers, is more widely used and accepted than plastic containers. It is due to its benefits to not only the end-user but also the environment. Paper packaging provides convenience as well as visibility for the brands. Besides, its advantages include the ease with which products can showcase their distinctive packaging and graphics to tell a brand’s story, its superior product protection, and the fact that it’s easy to stack. For Spices, some quantities of the ground and blended spices are packed in consumer packs of capacities ranging from 100 grams to 1kilogram. The protection required by whole spices is from moisture ingress / pick-up and insect infestation. The loss in flavour during storage in whole spices is negligible as the volatile oils are well protected within the cells of the plant material. In powdered spices, the deterioration is very rapid and much more care is required in selecting a suitable package. Powdered spices are also traded in bulk quantities and only a small portion is packed in value added consumer packs. Conventionally spices were exported in bulk packages, however with efforts of Spices Board and the Government of India, exports in branded and value-added consumer packages are gradually on the increase. The packaging material should have good machinability, printability and it should be easily available and disposable.

Spices in India are distributed and traded in a number of forms such as: whole spices (cardamom, black pepper, clove, turmeric, ginger, cinnamon, cassia), seed spices (celery, fennel, cumin, fenugreek), powdered or ground spices (turmeric, chillies, ginger), spice mixes (curry powders and masalas), paste (curry paste, vindaloo paste, gingergarlic paste), concentrates (tamarind concentrate) and oils and oleoresins. Whole spices are generally traded in bulk quantities and the processor grinds them and blends them for the finished spice product.
The advantages of foil as a packaging material: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
Good appearance Excellent dead-folding properties Ability to reflect radiant energy Excellent barrier to moisture, gases, and odors Nonabsorbent and nontoxic
Foil (> 0.015 mm thick) is totally impermeable to moist gases, light, and microorganisms. It is widely used for wraps (bottle caps [0.05 mm]), and trays for frozen and ready meals (0.06 mm). Foil trays are coated with vinyl epoxy compounds to make them suitable for microwave heating without damage to the magnetron. The aluminium foil protective liners provide an air-tight, light blocking protective barrier
so that your product reaches your customer the way you made it. The liner of multi layered film, which includes aluminium foil layer, has the exceptional barrier properties and provides goods with perfect protection against the ingress of water vapours, light, oxidation, and odours. If you manufacture sensitive products, this is the packing you need. Some of the best uses that have been found for these high-quality paper bags are for sugar, salt, flour and spices. These food items are notorious for requiring well-sealed containers that can lock in freshness and lock out pests. Spices are an especially volatile when it comes to retaining their flavourful characteristics. Improper packaging can cause spices to lose their intensity and flavour, or worse, to take on the flavour of their container. With paper spice bags that are specially designed to seal and protect your goods, you can store your spice items in confidence. Whether you are selling your own professional-grade fresh spices or simply looking for a better way to reorganize your kitchen, the paper spice bags are the right choice. Additionally, if you are looking for an ecofriendly and efficient packaging for your coffee, tea or other edible product that will lend to its overall value and customer appeal, choose paper bags with special properties
that will seal in freshness and lend to the aesthetic look of your brand. When your product is properly packaged, you not only increase the quality of your product, but are also able to market and promote your brand to the targeted market.
Paper as the best option As there is more use of Plastic in environment so evaluation of paper is the best option to avoid more use of plastic. Historically, papers have been used in flexible packaging for many applications, including confectionery, pet food and dried food. By the early2000s, however, paper demand as a flexible packaging substrate began to decline due to competition from down-gauging and the rise of plastic alternatives. Wood Mackenzie’s global flexible packaging market analysis puts the market size for converter supplied flexible packaging at roughly $90 billion in 2018 and $93 billion in 2019. Plasticbased value-added flexible packaging, i.e., converter supplied, accounts for roughly 93% of total consumption, compared to paper/board-based flexible packaging which accounts for about 5%

Evaluation of Spot Colour Reproduction in Digital Process Printing industry is increasingly adopting Digital technologies to complement or replace Analogue Process.
In the past few years, there has been quite a fast move from Conventional to Digital Proofing systems due to the introduction of CTP systems. As CTP systems do not use film anymore in the plate making process, digital colour separations have to be used to make proofs. The print quality with colour consistency and colour matching is achieved by Digital Proofing.
Digital Proofing The colour gamut of digital and traditional proof is overlapped, so a quality analysis of printed matter requires a comprehensive analysis that combines both subjective and objective evaluation.
Key Notes : > Proofing serves as a tool to verify the accuracy of a job. > Proofing is necessary to maintain colour consistency and appropriate colour match between digital proof and print. > Digital proofing is a common method of confirming the current printed copy of the printed sample.
12
August 2021
The main purpose of a proofing system is to simulate a given printing process so that the quality of the proofing device can be directly determined by measuring its ability to reproduce the standards of printing process. The proofer needs to be colour calibrated often to maintain colour accuracy of every proof. Digital proofing system is generally composed of high precision colour inkjet printer or colour laser printer, and through colour printing and simulation printing proofing colour, with the data of the original to check proofs.
Digital Printing The advantage of performing a test printing is that the data will be more up to date. To achieve accurate colour matching in the job printing helps to find difference between printed work and digital work to whether the colour has printed exactly the same way. The measurements can then be used to verify the colour proofs of the edition. For digital printing the proof printers are used and the proofs printers are measured and compared in terms of press proofs and colour accuracy and others parameters. The digital proof have bright colour, high saturation and good colour reproduction as compared to offset proof. In objective evaluation, the solid density of digital proofs is slightly higher than traditional print proofs. The gray balance of the image is improved
after standardized colour management. The colour gamut of digital and traditional proof is overlapped, so a quality analysis of printed matter requires a comprehensive analysis that combines both subjective and objective evaluation. The quality of digital proofing has been improving continually due to the revolution of digital proofing devices and the relevant colour measuring devices. Although the general digital proofing system will support spot colours, most of the digital proofing system can only accept spot colours. Practically, the CMYK values are used to output the print and are transformed according to a certain printing method with a narrower color gamut than spot colors, thereby resulting in larger colour difference in the digital proofing system.

Color Gamut mapping have colour distortion, so the evaluation of colour gamut mapping algorithm standard should be as accurate as possible or close to the visual effects. Colour gamut mapping algorithm is generally from the colour of the three attributes of lightness, chroma, colour image and device colour space. The colour gamut refers to some kind of equipment that can express the colour of a number of regional scope. Digital image colouring have more differences in a different colour space RGB and CMY. If the concrete situation is combined with digital image characteristics, the colour information of digital image loss can be minimum in different colour gamut space showing the best colour effect. At present, more paper packaging printers makes use of digital printing for proofing. But in terms of colour reproduction, digital proofs are difficult to determine the colour with the
dot size. It is not possible to judge the colour reduction and compensation of the digital proofing with traditional dot size method. The calibration and characterization should be performed for different the displays. The proof colour accuracy is highly affected by the proofing software and the substrate being used for proofing. As different print houses use different ink technologies with different media, they show different result of colour reproduction which again makes proofing, a crucial task especially for the Pantone colours. In digital proofing with custom proofing media colour reproduction is mainly affected by proofing module. Consistent proof quality for spot colours is only achieved by standardizing a proofing process.
is necessary to maintain colour consistency and appropriate colour match between digital proof and print. Digital proofing is also a common method of confirming the current printed copy of the printed sample, to meet most of the printed matter, such as product brochures, product pictures, colour cards and colour box etc. The cost to output digital proofs is more competitive compared with press proofs for only one set of proofs. The plate-less digital printing makes possible multi-product, low-volume printing in a limited printing time and cheaper.

IPAMA postpones 15th PRINTPACK INDIA Uncertainty regarding the third wave of COVID-19 forces the organizers to postpone the exhibition.
IPAMA (India Printing Packaging and Allied Machinery Manufacturers) has postponed the 15th edition of its top event PRINTPACK INDIA.”Considering uncertainty of the third wave of COVID-19 and its intensity, we have decided to postpone the exhibition,” says Dayaker Reddy, President of IPAMA. “We know many of you are looking forward for PRINTPACK INDIA exhibition and preparing for it. Businesses are getting normal, and more vaccinations are likely to improve scenario,” he adds. The organisers have taken the unavoidable decision citing the safety of the visitors, associates and exhibitors as their topmost priority. During the recent Governing Council meeting of IPAMA recently, the members reviewed the Survey Reports relating to the organisation of 15th PRINTPACK INDIA, slated to be held in December. After considering various relevant factors – the Survey Reports, Government guidelines, the health risk of concerned people, impact of lockdowns along with the postponement of other significant events like Delhi Auto Expo, India ITME etc., due to COVID-19, the members decided to postpone PRINTPACK India. The Governing Council looked pretty enthusiastic when it put extensive force behind the 15th PRINTPACK INDIA 2021.
IPAMA offered special rates for participants and offered up to 64% discount to members of more than 15 yrs. Unfortunately, the second wave paused the momentum to force the House to decided to postpone the event. Earlier IPAMA had conducted a survey last year, seeking the views of the Exhibitors, regarding the event’s organisation. Most of the respondents had advised rescheduling of the dates citing the adverse impact on the industrial operations due to prolonged period of COVID-induced lockdowns by various Governments. Then, the Governing Council of IPAMA had rescheduled the exhibition
dates from the earlier dates of February to the recently postponed December 2021. The officials of IPAMA had also personally contacted each Exhibitor for submission of another Survey Report. Around 80 per cent of the Exhibitors had recommended postponement of the exhibition. “The decision to reschedule the event was initiated after conducting survey of exhibitors, which made it imperative for us to do the same. The updated dates for PRINTPACK INDIA will be declared soon,” concludes Dayaker Reddy.

Dataline releases MultiPress App for Enfocus Switch The application automatically links all stored information from MultiPress to a job in Switch. Dataline and Enfocus launch the MultiPress Connect app. The modular Switch platform from Enfocus offers versatile automation possibilities for prepress and print production workflow. With the development of this MultiPress Connect app, it’s possible to optimise Switch with the data from MultiPress. With the application, all stored information from MultiPress is automatically linked to a job in Switch. Enfocus’ modular Switch platform offers versatile automation possibilities for prepress and print production workflow. The platform allows users to compose their workflows to partially or fully automate their production processes. It creates links between software applications, but is also open for connections with external partners. Featuring an an appstore with ready-made apps from external parties. These apps enable users to quickly and easily add extra functionality to their Switch workflows and make easy links to the external party’s solution. Davy Verstaen, Solution Architect at Dataline comments, “It’s no surprise that the Switch platform is rapidly gaining popularity and is being adopted across the graphic arts industry. Our team saw this development and believes that MultiPress users should also be able to benefit from this. Therefore, we decided to connect both systems using the new MultiPress Connect app.” Angelo Manno, Global OEM & Strategic Accounts Manager at Enfocus, added: “The Switch platform’s mission is to bring together
the ever-growing range of quality software in the graphic arts industry. We are therefore thrilled to be able to add a major MIS player like MultiPress to our list of integrations. This is an important step towards full process automation for many customers.”
MultiPress Connect app’s range of options The MultiPress Connect app offers users dual advantages of – powerful automation possibilities of Switch combined with the extensive and up-to-date information in MultiPress. Through the MultiPress Connect app, the user shares all necessary CRM/ERP data with Switch, such as new or changed contact details, estimate and quotation information, or updated order status. The receipt of files or, for example, approval of a digital proof version is also passed on immediately. Based on these notifications from MultiPress, Switch processes the current information and subsequently takes the necessary action fully automatically. In turn, Switch feeds back data via the MultiPress Connect app, so that MultiPress automatically takes action. This feedback of data from Switch to MultiPress takes place automatically and without errors, which can save a lot of time and money. This is the only way to take the automation of the order flow to the next level: it creates a fully integrated solution, without the necessary intervention of order managers or prepress operators.
How does the MultiPress Connect app improve the workflow? A simple example shows how such a connected prepress workflow works in practice. As soon as a customer approves a quotation and submits his files online, a preflight profile is selected based on the order information. After automatic preflight, the order status is updated and the customer receives confirmation that his digital proof is available. After approval by the client, MultiPress informs the Switch platform, after which the files are immediately processed further towards production. One can also automate all kinds of optional steps in the workflow. For example, an order for which the files have been received can be directly included in the planning to guarantee timely production. The required materials and paper stock are immediately reserved and, based on JDF, the files can be sent directly to imposition. The big advantage: nowhere in this process is it necessary to manually enter or update information.
MultiPress Connect Lite The MultiPress Connect app provides users with a unique, ready-to-use tool that allows them to automate all kinds of tasks from within MultiPress via Switch. MultiPress Connect Lite is available in the Enfocus Appstore. This version offers limited functionality, and it allows users to experience the benefits of the seamless link between MultiPress and Switch for free: one saves time, avoids mistakes and works efficiently. During a webinar on September 29, Dataline and Enfocus application experts explained the wide range of automation possibilities that can be set up in Switch workflows with the new MultiPress Connect app. A.o. Davy Verstaen, MultiPress Solution Architect at Dataline, gave the demonstration.

Revoria derived from the blending of “revolution” and the suffix “-ia” meaning country or land, which asserts Fujifilm’s dedication to revolutionize the production printing business, by foraying into new “lands” or innovative spaces and creating unprecedented value. The Revoria PC 1120 comes equipped with a onepass, six-colour print engine, up to two special toners such as gold, silver, clear, white, pink, and textured that can be used in addition to the basic CMYK toners. These toners enable high-value, high quality printing such as metallic colors, pop ups, creates overlays and underlays of designs my mixing special colours with CMYK in addition to getting natural skin textures. There are built in tools like AI and other automation technology in the system, which open up new avenues for printing companies to expand their business with increased productivity and new applications. Speaking on the launch of the printer, Mr. Kentaro
Imafaku, Head of Department, Graphic Arts said, “At Fujifilm, we are committed to provide best-in class services to our users at the most affordable rates in the market. With the Revoria PC 1120, we set foot on another landmark in the printing industry by developing a printer that can print 6 colours at a pass. We are confident that the demand for this revolutionary product would be immense in the Indian market.” The Revoria PC 1120 prints at a high speed of 120 pages per minute (A4 horizontal) while achieving high definition, high resolution prints of 2,400 dpi with its Super EA-Ecotoner, which boasts the smallest toner particle size in the industry. It is capable of printing metallic colours like Gold, silver with combinations in overlays and underlays that give a variety of shades of metallic, which are useful in decoration and improving print aesthetics. It can further run on non-paper substrates like films and metallic sheets because of its unique technology of removing static electricity from paper. It also automatically divides the image data into five colors of cyan, magenta, yellow, black (CMYK) and pink. The fluorescent colours of the pink toner expands the colour gamut significantly, thus resulting in vibrant printouts especially on people images showing vivid colours and with smoother skin tones. The Air Suction Feeder and Static Removal Device of Revoria PC 1120 provide a highly stable paper feeding for a wide variety of papers such as paper

containing concentrated amounts of paper dust, cohesive coated paper, and film. Additionally, Artificial Intelligence (AI) enables automatic image corrections for photo images. Each photo image automatically enhances based on its existing lackluster condition such as image being too dark/ too bright, backlight exposure, correction of skin tones, and bringing out the hues in blue skies. All in all, it provides customers the best value-for their money.
A combination of Quality and Productivity Enabled by its one pass 6-colour print engine the Revoria PC 1120 allows loading of a maximum of two speciality toner station in addition to CMYK toner. For specialty toner, choices of Clear (only for overlays), Gold, Silver, White, Pink and textured toners are available. By overlaying CMYK on Silver or Gold, printers can print various brilliant metallic colours. The rich colour expressions
created by the 6-colour print engine can expand customers’ business. It can print at 2400 × 2400 dpi high resolution by drawing images simultaneously with multiple laser beams. The Super EA-Eco toner with extremely small particle size allows smooth reproduction of gradations in photographs, uniform density and sharper fine lines and text. It also produces easy-to-read printed text with less glare. The inline sensor built into the printer body allows easy and quick calibration. Its automatic adjustment function allows printers to adjust multiple settings at once minimizing maintenance and downtime. In addition, the unique MACS (Micro Accurate Control Screen) technology generates high image quality. The machine supports CMYK colour standards such as Fogra, SWOP and GRACoL. Printers can select different screens for individual objects for optimum image quality.
They can select the suitable screen for each object such as a text and photo. With another beautiful feature, printers can separate into CMYK + Pink, making skin tones brighter, thus allowing reproducing smooth and beautiful texture of the skin. The Fujifilm Revoria PC 1120 supports a wide range of paper weights from lightweight paper of 52 gsm to heavyweight paper of 400 gsm. Paper sizes range from A6 to 330 × 488 mm. Full bleed printing on SRA3 (320 × 450 mm) is also possible (useful to create brochures or leaflets that need to have bleed). Customers can print up to 330 x 1200 mm banner sheets for simplex printing (up to 330 x 729 mm for automatic duplex printing) allowing them to expand the scope of new printing application such as powerful panoramic posters. Further, the inline static eliminator module makes it easy to stack and align film and metallic media, prone to developing static electricity charge.

Industrial Digital Printing Gallus Labelfire impresses with its exceptional stability during continuous operation. The Gallus Labelfire is the most widely used hybrid printing system on the market today. Serial number 50 went into production in spring 2020 and it is used for both label and folding box printing. At the core of the Labelfire system is a UV inkjet digital printing unit with 7 colours plus white, which is supplemented by five flexographic printing units for varnish application, metallic and special colours and also for cold foil adhesive application. A rotary die-cutting unit allows finishing at full press speed.
“In addition to its improved print head technology, the Labelfire is equipped with a range of coordinated control functions that qualifies it for permanent use in industrial 24/5 or 24/7 operation.” - Martin Leonhard, Gallus
Key Notes : > The industrial conditions that highperformance users impose on their digital printing systems, places extremely high demands on their presses.
Since the launch of the Labelfire in 2016, a lot has changed in the market segment for hybrid machine systems. It transpires that it is precisely the requirements of high-performance users that give the impetus for the further development of machine systems. It is characteristic of such printers to use monitoring systems to specifically record the productivity of their machine systems via KPIs. If deviations from the standard occur, this starts the process to eliminate the causes, together with the machine manufacturer and other system participants, or to define goals that one wants to achieve.
Impressive mileage with high performance users Gallus defines high-performance users as companies that operate the Labelfire in three shifts and achieve an average daily output of 30,000 to 50,000 running metres. With an average of 35,000 metres per day, top users achieve an average performance of 175,000 metres in a 5-day week. Even higher weekly
outputs are reported by “frontrunners”, businesses who work the Labelfire 24/7, for example at Philip Morris production sites. In folding carton printing, run rates of over 300,000 metres/week are achieved. With this high productivity, up to 8,000 litres of digital/inkjet ink are printed per press per year. The performance of the hybrid press system is also reflected in the ink consumption of this magnitude. Even higher weekly run rates have been reported.
“The strength of the Labelfire is its productivity” confirms Valentina Pasqui from Pasqui srl, one of the power users from Italy.
What changes led to the increase in stability? “The newly developed control of the print heads that Gallus has incorporated into the development of the digital printing unit, is a key contributing factor towards more stable print quality at high speed,” says Martin Leonhard, Head of Business Development at Gallus Ferd. Rüesch AG. Colleague Uwe Alexander, Digital Product Manager adds, “In addition to this improved print head technology, the Labelfire is equipped with a range of coordinated control functions that qualifies it for permanent use in industrial 24/5 or 24/7 operation.” Now that the machines in the market have received these updates, the success of the enhancements is evident in the feedback. “The strength of the Labelfire is

its productivity,” confirms Valentina Pasqui from Pasqui srl, one of the power users from Italy (Power users are businesses who run the Labelfire in 24/5 operation). This can be traced back through key figures of the running performance, which show impressive development.

colours from running into each other, which would lead to blurred reproduction or a colour shift (bleeding).
Detection of defects and density irregularities Automatic detection of defects and density variances also makes a significant contribution to process reliability. This is done via a camera, which identifies faulty nozzles. Once a defective nozzle has been detected, it is compensated for in a second step. The system uses an algorithm to calculate the necessary compensation so that defects are eliminated by triggering additional ink droplets or by deflecting the ink droplets.
Vision system and touch screen control panel For the operator, a significant contributor to process reliability comes from ease of use. While the machine is running, the operator can see the print image directly and control the functions of the hybrid machine from a single position. He receives input from the vision system, installed below the last row of print heads. A camera monitors the web, which is illuminated from one of the three available LED light sources at different
angles, depending on the printing material. The results are transferred from there to the operator’s HMI (Human Machine Interface) touch screen control panel. The automated register control of transverse and longitudinal registers of the print unit is particularly helpful for the operator in the edition print. If register errors are indicated to the operator, he can adjust them by simply pressing a button. In day-to-day operation, this saves time and set-up waste.
Prinect® DFE (Digital Front End) In the prepress stage, Prinect workflow software prepares the print data and makes it ready for printing. Prinect also takes on the task of qualifying the substrates, creating suitable colour profiles for them and defining spot colours accurately. During production, the front end makes a significant contribution to the process reliability by offsetting and compensating density variances as well as imperfections caused by missing nozzles. This can be proven through repeat orders, which show a very high level of colour accuracy in comparison with different editions.
Fixing of the ink droplets Stability factors include, for example, pinning modules located behind each row of print heads. They fix the individual ink droplets on the substrate before the ink droplets of the next colour are added. This prevents the

Service package Maintenance of the machines used in 3-shift operation also contributes to process reliability and places corresponding demands on the processes. On-site preventive maintenance by Gallus technicians is part of the service package that Gallus offers for safe operation. It has proven beneficial to train staff to enable them to identify and qualify errors on site. When troubleshooting, they are supported by the Gallus hotline in Switzerland, while spare parts logistics are handled by Heidelberg country representatives. This means that the required spare parts are available on site within 24 hours.
Summary With the new control of the digital print heads and a series of coordinated control functions, Gallus has succeeded in creating an extremely stable digital printing system for continuous industrial operation. The stability
and productivity of these printing systems at high-performance users demonstrate values that have not previously been achieved in continuous operation. Even if inkjet digital printing systems are considered to have somewhat sensitive print head technology and rather frequent maintenance intervals, these practical examples demonstrate that this should not be a generalisation. Digital printing systems such as the Gallus Labelfire have been proving themselves for months in 24/5 and
also in 24/7 continuous operation. This new situation is also the first step towards a paradigm shift in digital printing. While digital printing systems have until now often been seen as a supplement to conventional presses with advantages for short and very short runs, the Gallus Labelfire is a system for continuous industrial operation.

SOMA: A flexible advantage to packaging producers in India SOMA’s compact and highly flexible Optima packaging printing solutions gave Multiflex Polybags a timely advantage to remain competitive in India. SOMA is a leading manufacturer of printing and converting solutions. It is a hub for the latest development in flexography for industry partners in the fields of ink, plate, anilox, sleeve, and tape. Meanwhile, Multiflex Polybags is a leading flexible packaging producer of labels, pouches, and polybags with the main plant located in Chennai, India.
Challenge India has one of the largest printing packaging industries in the world. Reportlinker has forecasted that its packaging market is expected to exceed USD 204 billion by 2025. With this rising demand for packaged food and smaller print runs, packaging businesses cannot be working solely with gravure technology. They need to consider flexotechnology as the way forward. In addition the installation of the equipment was to be carried out during the COVID-19 pandemic in India. There were therefore logistics and traveling challenges to overcome due to the movement control procedures put in place.
Approach We recommended the SOMA 800 Optima CI Flexo press solution as it is a start-up small press in terms of width and repeat, and easy to operate. While being compact for space efficiency, the press is purposeful featuring a full range of automation and user-friendly features. A key benefit of the machine is that it easily rewinds the used print setting film for future reuse.
Result The biggest success for Multiflex Polybags was that they were able to meet their customers’ packaging and printing requirements. They also achieved better printing stability and improved output quality. Very important for the business is that the Optima CI Flexo press enabled them to register high accuracy in small print batches that are on par with the traditional gravure processing method for large columns of printing. “This press is a must-have for every flexible packaging printer and converter, and its power-packed and compact size providing us with an extra armor in our arsenal. The machine is very versatile in terms of material handling and enables quick job changeovers for shorter runs. We are grateful to DKSH and
SOMA for their continuous support in these challenging times,” says Rajendra Mehta, Director, Multiflex Polybags. “Although we live in a globally connected world, SOMA understands that local resources are significant reference centers to explore and test new trends and innovations in flexographic printing. We are very happy as this was the first time that the Optima press was installed in India, following the previous installations of other models from SOMA’s Flexo Family,” says Pavla Kusa, Commercial Director, SOMA.
The compact eight-colour press is automated for make-ready, registration, and cleaning purposes without the waste of printing material and time. The press runs at a speed of 300 meters per minute and can print materials with a width of 820 millimeters. To overcome the pandemic movement controls in India, our team and engineers coped with the stringent travel permissions and safety requirements to fulfill the installation at the customer’s premise and provide the necessary support services for the equipment.

A Shape-Shifting Solution to Labeling and Design iC3D’s All-in-One delivers surprise benefits for Packaging Prepress.
“With Every Osiopack client introducing unique bottles and continually designing products to be ahead of the trend, we’re future-proofed for whatever shape innovations are to come.” - Tony McCash, Graphics Manager, Osiopack Summary When shrink-sleeve specialist Osiopack decided to look for new software to visualize predistortion of packaging quickly and accurately, the choice of iC3D was straightforward. What the company did not expect, however, were the additional features of the all-in-one application that would transform their day-to-day operation, provide new mockup flexibility, and wow clients. With a broad client base spanning the food, beverage and pharmaceutical sectors, Osiopack was founded in 1996 to provide rotogravure-printed flexible packaging materials to consumer product manufacturers. Based in Anaheim, CA., the company produces primarily shrink sleeves, bar wraps and stand-up pouches. In fact, shrink sleeves have become such an area of specialization that the company designed and developed its own high-speed automated shrink sleeve labeling systems. Osiopack’s exclusive focus on gravure reflects an uncompromising dedication to the quality of its print. Of course, with deadlines continually shortening while the range of products required adaptation and diversification, maintaining this quality and matching it in all aspects of service becomes increasingly important.

Tony McCash, Graphics Manager at Osiopack, is on the front line when it comes to managing many of these new challenges to keep processes flowing efficiently. As the person responsible for intake of customer graphics, pre-press set-up, color accuracy, and coordination with Osiopack’s print partners in South Korea, if there are mishaps or anomalies on the horizon, it is essential that he finds them first. Visual communication is a critical element in the process, according to McCash, “When you’re working in shrink film almost exclusively, the ability to accurately visualize pre-distorted artwork is essential for identifying any issues.” What makes it even more challenging for McCash is that among Osiopack clients there’s no such thing as a standard product shape. “Every single client has a unique and distinctive bottle shape.” McCash used to rely on a leading visualization software for showing distortion correction, outputting to PDF. This was “good enough” but when the license was due for costly renewal, he decided to explore alternatives. His investigations led to iC3D and McCash was immediately impressed by the ease and speed of its undistort feature for simulating the effects of distortion caused by the shrink process and enabling “correction” of artwork to address the behavioral characteristics. When mapping to a shrink surface, the system “pre-distorts” artwork so it appears normal when the package or prototype is constructed. iC3D then exports the pre-distorted art back to Illustrator for final output and production. Accurate simulation of printing on shrink film
was so crucial to Osiopack’s core business that, once questions of cost, support, and upgradeability had been happily dispensed with, the decision in favor of iC3D was made for that capability alone. At this point, McCash had given little attention to the vast range of additional features which are all included in iC3D’s single, all-in-one platform.
The Shape of Things to Come “The advanced 3D shape modelling capabilities of iC3D are a benefit I hadn’t even hoped for,” comments McCash. “The ability to create custom shapes, and in particular non-cylindrical bottles, has rapidly become an indispensable tool. iC3D also allows for importing of many 3D formats, which has allowed me to simulate all different sorts of bottles and packs I couldn’t even get close to before. “iC3D’s Shape Modeller feature has been developed to enable any packaging shape,
pressideas/ plc
Wowing in 360 Degrees Shape versatility has not been the only extra benefit of iC3D to impress Osiopack and its clients. According to McCash, iC3D’s cloudbased viewing platform, Opsis, is more than a complement to the realism and technical accuracy of the mockups produced. It brings practicality, convenience and flexibility to dayto-day operations.
no matter how complex, to be created quickly and easily, and visualized in real-time. STL files can be imported, and 3D models can be edited selectively; displacement mapping also makes it straightforward to add distortions to the surface of the model – to create embossing or debossing, for example. The flexibility of these combined features makes iC3D universally viable for any client, any application, and any new, still-to-beimagined creative designs to follow. “With every Osiopack client introducing unique bottles and continually designing products to be ahead of the trend, we’re future-proofed for whatever shape innovations are to come,” adds McCash.
with iC3D and its reseller CGS Publishing Technologies, McCash is clearly impressed. “The sales support and service from CGS has been excellent. They took the time to fully understand my needs and make sure I was totally at ease with all the features and capabilities. I was up and running from day one without a hitch.”
iC3D Opsis can be accessed via any web browser on a desktop, laptop, tablet or smartphone to allow simultaneous viewing and collaboration by multiple stakeholders. For Osiopack, this means that McCash can share the preparation of artwork with clients in real-time, enabling them to watch the distortion process as it happens and in 360-degrees. McCash says, “Since switching to iC3D, clients have been very pleased with the quick turnaround times for proofing artwork, but probably the most enthusiastic feedback has been in relation to Opsis,” comments McCash. “The usual response to seeing the distortion in action for the first time is ‘Wow, that is so cool!’.” Summing up Osiopack’s experience to date

Winners of the 2021 Intergraf Young Talent Award
The winners of the 2021 Intergraf Young Talent Award, the annual celebration of the pioneering ideas of young people in print have been announced. First place was awarded to Rita Estevinha Silva from Portugal for her entry ‘The Future of Printing: a Gen Zer’s view’. Tom Maskill from the UK won second place, and Cédric Dumont from France won third place. The Intergraf Young Talent Award was created in 2017 to raise the voices of the next generation of print professionals. This year was focused on how the sector can remain attractive for young people. How will print develop in the future? What kind of working environment are you looking for? How could a printing company provide this? These were the three important questions addressed by entrants to the 2021 edition of the award. Rita Estevinha Silva’s prize-winning entry from Portugal presented a particularly thought-provoking and challenging view on the future of print. The printing industry, Rita noted, needs to “look at technology as an opportunity rather than an enemy, so it can effectively change”. Part of this change is, of course, embracing all things digital, but Rita also extolled the importance of providing a “fresh and happy environment” by developing more modern workplace practices which centre the well-being and satisfaction of staff, rather than more traditional structures that have sometimes remained unchanged and unchallenged for too many years. Responding to her win, Rita said that “I am still astonished with this award. I have always dreamed about being an active voice in the contemporary discourse. This surely is a glimpse of such dream. My heart is full. Thank you, Intergraf!” Rita will be presenting her winning ideas at the Final Conference of the Print Your Future project on 3 November 2021 in Brussels.

The judging panel this year had a very challenging decision to make after receiving so many excellent submissions from across Europe. Although there could only be one winner, the panel recognised two other deserving submissions by awarding second and third places. The winner of second place, Tom Maskill from the UK, said that “It’s fantastic to be recognised in the Intergraf Young Talent Award 2021. Despite a tricky last couple of years and ongoing challenges, there’s all kinds of good and innovation coming from the world of print. It’s exciting to be a part of.” This year’s third place winner, Cédric Dumont from France, celebrated his second consecutive recognition in the Intergraf Young Talent Award, stating that “I’m very grateful

World-first integrated automation solution by Esko Esko unleashes the power of Variable Data Printing in collaboration with Scantrust and ePac Flexible packaging. Esko has delivered a world-first in connected packaging production, supercharging secure Variable Data Print (VDP) capabilities in terms of both speed and scale for a new collaboration with Scantrust and packaging company ePac Flexible Packaging. Esko Automation Engine is at the heart of the operation, with its innovative VDP technology enabling the printing of serialized and secure QR codes on flexible packaging on a mass scale, unleashing the power of VDP for the new connected packaging and connected goods service, ePacConnect. “Variable Data Printing has the ability to take the role of packaging to a whole new level,” said Esko Product Manager, Paul Land. “With opportunities for localization, serialization, personalization and traceability, the advances in automation mean it is now possible to further harness the technology to transform the prepress environment. With cloud deployment for 24/7 global access to data and new scalability capabilities, Automation Engine is enabling ePac to realize the power of VDP for an organization without the downsides. “By connecting the VDP module in Automation Engine with Scantrust, we have created a framework for codes that makes it easy for converters to use,” said Paul. “Not only is this implementation the first of its kind, but it also unlocks capabilities that were previously difficult to achieve.” Because every ePacConnect flexible pack includes a Scantrust QR code, every pouch becomes an online gateway. The unique onpack code, which is smaller than a postage stamp, activates the Scantrust suite of connected goods and connected packaging tools. Accessible features range from consumer engagement tools to active brand protection and anti-counterfeiting features that work through scans of a safe QR code on the pack. “Scantrust gives every single physical product a unique digital identifier, which adds complexity for prepress and production,” said Peter Kostur, Scantrust Sales & Partnership Director. “Our platform can

deliver protection against counterfeiting and improve traceability within the supply chain as every single label, pouch, or bottle can be traced, even when in the hands of the consumers,” he said. “Brands utilize such digital interface technology to connect with consumers, integrate with loyalty platforms and customer relationship management tools, and also for internal supply chain operations. When incentivizing consumers to interact with the products, not only can the relationship and trust between brand and consumer be significantly improved, it can also help by crowd sourcing the supply chain data for further strategical improvement. “There are three building blocks to making the connected packaging,” added Peter. “There’s the variable QR code, a mobile environment enabling the user interactions, and a platform that enables the customer to manage the codes, product content, and extract the data. However, each project starts with a question from the brand: How do we get the variable data on our product?” Automation Engine makes the integration of VDP requirements as easy as a few mouse clicks. “It is now simple to integrate the VDP requirements into the process,” said Paul Land. “The process can even happen in the cloud, for added flexibility in terms of printing a job at any location. “Typically, once the order details are entered, the information is passed through into Automation Engine which then acts as the enabling platform between all the systems,” he said. “It consolidates and pulls the variable data information through, determining the quantities and parameters of the job. So for example, with a quantity of 100,000 records it expands the files and the variable elements for printing, and then automatically expands the template file to the quantities needed - each with its own unique QR code - and lays them out for production. The automation means that a process that used to take hours or even days is now completed in just a few minutes.” Ryan Kiley, Director of Market Development, ePac Flexible Packaging, said the ability to
produce mass scale VDP regardless of run size had been a game changer. “Scale is where the rubber meets the road,” he said. “Scale is what we can accomplish through working together. Now, with a single click, a customer can turn their packaging into an interactive platform delivering consumer engagement, proof of provenance, and brand protection while reducing touchpoints in prepress and production. “With the VDP automation, we can accelerate our rate of growth as we add plants, people, systems, languages, currencies, substrates, structures and other technologies,” said Ryan. “And with Automation Engine being cloud-based, it means we have total control over our production – with our teams able to access files from anywhere, at any time for 24/7 operation, scale production up or down to meet demand and enabling us to divert the production to any plant around the world. “As a result, our ePacConnect service has achieved customized, flexible packaging with connected packaging features that require very little or no up-front costs, lower minimum order requirements, and minimal technical setup.”
