FROM THE EDITORS’ DESK Dear Readers, A revolutionary technology that’s paused to leap is 3D Printing. To put it simply, it is a technology based on layering principle – with layers built upon layer – to build three-dimensional products of diverse shapes and to minute details. At the recent K 2013 held in October 2013, it was decided to launch the 3D fab + print. The upcoming events of import in near future are COMPAMED taking place with MEDICA. How 3D Printing holds promise is substantiated by the fact that it accelerates ‘innovation’ by enabling an instant creation of solid prototypes as well as tangible templates. To know more about the technology just go through the article, ‘All Aboard: The 3D revolution is spreading like wildfire’. Moreover, Divide By Zero has already launched, what’s touted as India’s first 3D printer at the recent Plastivision India 2013 in Mumbai. On similar lines, one magnificent innovation has been experienced in the field of interactive advertisement in print. Motorola has published an ad in the January issue of Wired magazine which has coloured buttons, which upon pressing, change the colour of the image of the published backplate of Motorola’s smartphone. We have to just wait and watch what avenues this type of innovative interactive printing can open in value added printing applications of future. G K Vale is the first customer to install South Asia’s first DreamLabo 5000 – Canon’s recent milestone stepping into commercial Photo Printing sphere. Does the revolutionary product mark an end to the undisputed dominance of the time-tested Silver Halide Printing technology, only time will tell. However, the quality that DreamLabo is capable of producing is really something which presents today’s Photo customers with another option when it comes to flawless printing of their photographic memories. The cover story of this issue shares, among other things, the experience of Mr. Anand Sukumar of G K Vale before, during and after the Canon DreamLabo 5000 installation at their Bangalore facility. Know about what’s Quark’s latest offer for the Indian customers; the latest appointments at Quad/Graphics and Ahlstrom; the global forecast for Pigments; Clariant acquiring masterbatches producer Plastichemix; Numex Blocks adding Gallus Screeny to its portfolio; Dainik Bhaskar targeting youth with second season of Brain Hunt; KBA’s further steps in restructuring its core business; Ipex 2014 Open Day; Heidelberg investing in software company Neo7even and also unveiling its new Dymatrix XL 145 CSB and much more of interest to the printing fraternity in the year ending issue of PRESSIdeas.

G K Vale gets best alternative to conventional photo printing in Canon DreamLabo 5000 The Bangalore based 100 year old photo lab chooses Canon’s new evolution DreamLabo 5000 – South Asia’s first commercial inkjet photo printer, which also marks Canon’s entry into the commercial photo printing domain. Canon India has announced its entry into the commercial photo printing business in India, introducing the new DreamLabo 5000 commercial inkjet printer equipment targeting the retail photo and album printing industry. With this new launch, Canon India marks its entry into the commercial photo printing market, a new business domain for the company. Canon held a press announcement event recently which was attended by Mr. Kensaku Konishi - President & CEO, Canon Singapore Pte Ltd. GK Vale, a 100 year old photo lab in Bangalore is the first customer to purchase and install DreamLabo 5000 in India.

A technology to revitalize the industry and open up new business opportunities

Delivering a new standard of combined photo and text quality together with high productivity, the DreamLabo offers the production photo printing market a viable alternative to silver halide technology.

This launch makes India the first country in South Asia where the DreamLabo 5000 machine is being installed. “The core technology of this Canon machine has been the sole criteria for us to adopt the new technology,” says Anand Sukumar, Managing Partner, G K Vale. “It is the best alternative to Silver Halide photo printing technology,” he adds. Present at the launch ceremony in Bangalore, Mr. Kazutada Kobayashi, President & CEO, Canon India, said, “Canon has always been at the forefront of

bringing innovative products to customers. With this latest business entry, we are hoping to strengthen our ability to meet the printing needs of professional and wedding photographers. With the DreamLabo 5000, we clearly want to establish innovation leadership in India. For us at Canon India, this is not just a new machine, but the technology that can revitalize the entire industry and open up substantial new business opportunities. Canon is setting a new benchmark for the production printing of high quality photos with this launch.” In addition, through opportunities possible from premium quality, it offers both the production photo and the small batch premium print-on-demand (POD) markets substantial new revenue opportunities. For G K Vale, the DreamLabo 5000 will be catering to personalized greetings, invitations, calendars, and digital photo books. But for the time being it may not be an option for commercial digital printing of documents for them, says Sukumar.

HD prints by DL 5000 – An answer to high quality photographic needs Till date, Canon has offered an extensive selection of imaging products across a range of markets, from digital cameras for amateur and professional-level photographers, to home-use printers that allow users to easily create and enjoy beautiful photo prints &

digital multifunctional printers for enterprises to address their document management solutions. Additionally, satisfying the exacting needs of industry professionals, the company has launched high-performance professionalmodel photo printers, large-format printers and digital printing presses. Canon’s existing digital presses portfolio is already going strong in digital document printing. Though they tried to answer some of the photography printing needs, it was not too much success given the high quality standards set by Silver Halide. But DreamLabo 5000 is exactly an answer to high quality needs of photographic prints.

Leveraging and extending Canon’s existing inkjet technology, which it has successfully deployed through its PIXMA desktop printers range, the DreamLabo 5000 features a newly developed high-density print head, enabling over 300 mm wide printing output. Incorporating Canon’s FINE (Fullphotolithography Inkjet Nozzle Engineering) technology, the print head enables the printing of high-quality photos and detailed text to support a variety of high-value-added output, from premium photo albums, photo books, photo calendars, photo collages and other merchandise to high-quality POD items, such as bespoke brochures.

Dr. Alok Bharadwaj, Executive Vice President, Canon India, says, “India is a 3000 crore photo printing industry with lion’s share coming from wedding albums & travel vacation photos.” “While there is tremendous change in photo capturing, the printing art is still dominated with conventional technology. Conventional Silver Halide Technology is just too old and digital alternative is not matching customer expectations. There was enormous scope of value creation in this space. Our partners call the new Dreamlabo 5000 prints as HD (high definition) prints. We plan to start with Rs. 15 crore coming out of this domain in 2014. It has a potential to create 100 crore business stream in 5 years,” he adds.

The wide print head delivers high-speed One-Pass Printing, requiring only a single pass of the printing paper while the print

The current silver halide customer base of GK Vale is being converted to HD Prints, informs Sukumar. “The additions would be from the large base of professional photographers who are highly impressed with the HD prints of DL5000,” he says. A lot of outstation professional customers are also being impressed by the high definition quality prints of DL5000. “The Silver Halide market is now enjoying a 90%+ market share. DreamLabo is expected to make quick inroads and is expected to eke out a market share of 40% in the first year itself. DL would be future and would even pave the way for 3D printing in future,” foresees Sukumar.

High-quality output by Canon’s FINE technology Bharadwaj says that the launch has put India on a global map of high quality digital photo printing. Canon organized a meet comprising of photo labs, wedding photographers, wedding planners and event agencies in Bangalore to promote this business and to impact a larger ecosystem.

head remains in a fixed position. When used in combination with the automatic Doublesided Printing function, the DreamLabo 5000 is capable of printing the contents of A4 size print approx.1,000 page and 4x6 single print approx. 2,300 page per hour. The system also realizes high productivity by enabling paper and ink tank replacement during printing, supporting the extended operation times required for production printers.

There’s no competition for DL 5000 Sukumar thinks that DreamLabo positions very high vis-a-vis other available commercial engines with photo capabilities. “There’s no competition for DreamLabo with reference to quality. It uses a seven-colour inkset, CMYK plus photo magenta, photo cyan and grey which gives true, crisp and vivid colours and sharp images. And this is the real difference that the end customer can expect in his final photo prints,” he elaborates. DreamLabo 5000 uses a seven-colour dye-based ink system that delivers smooth gradation. Employing image processing technology that makes use of the full range of Canon’s unique inkjet printing colour gamut, the new printer enables the output of photo images with a level of colour representation which comprehensively surpasses that of conventional silver halide. The only challenge Sukumar faced with his DreamLabo 5000 was regarding pricing of its products. “It has been challenging as the

technology is just introduced. The amateur customers are very impressed with the quality of the prints. There are customers who are demanding portrait pictures from DL,” claims an enthusiastic Sukumar. He also believes that the high quality prints on different media at affordable rates would be the key driving factor in photo printing market in the near future.

G K Vale and Canon DreamLabo 5000 is versatile equipment and an addition of a photobook finishing machine could be an ideal supplement to its vast capabilities since photo business is all about presentation and finishing. Sukumar suggests a complete set up for anybody going for DreamLabo 5000. This according to Sukumar should cost about Rs. 4-5 crores (including air conditioning, power backup, dehumidifiers, photobook finishing machines and photo framing section etc.). He expects an ROI ranging from 2 to 3 years. “We may probably go in for another machine by mid 2014 as we intend to gradually replace all our silver halide printing machines,” he states. The retail price of DreamLabo 5000 in India is approximately INR 4.5 crore. Canon has announced that it would be working with its sales team and channel partners to reach out to the masses with this new area of business. G K Vale is pretty pleased with their latest prized Canon DL 5000. The consumables for their new press are being sourced according to requirements by G K Vale. G K Vale is a premium partner of Canon India from Bangalore. It also operates 9 Canon Image Square stores in the city. Being a long time partner of Canon, it is especially appreciative of Canon’s support all through. “What puts Canon apart in the service department is that they have laid down very strict principles of service resting on quality and delivery. The top management are very receptive and help us in formulating market strategies for mutual benefit,” says Sukumar. He looks forward to adding equipments in the photobook finishing segment and says he would anytime prefer such equipment from the Canon stable. With a keen eye for future, Sukumar keeps abreast of the latest by investing in the latest technology as he strongly puts forward his belief, “Innovation and adoption of latest technology is the key to survival in the photo industry.”

All Aboard: The 3D revolution is spreading like wildfire The Düsseldorf trade show and VDMA announce launch of the 3D fab+print brand

Right now, 3D printing is mostly limited to CAD supported laser cutters, lathes or injection moulding machines, yet new ideas have benefited all industries over time. Incorporating 3D printing into the canon of printing technologies as a fourth pillar next to letterpress, offset and digital print is the right thing to do.

Key Notes : > 3D printing is not without a history. > The Düsseldorf trade show and VDMA decide to launch the 3D fab+print. > 3D printing is based on the layering principle – objects to be printed are built layer upon layer from several liquid or powder-like substances.

14

December 2013

Almost unnoticed, revolutionary production technologies have emerged without any meaningful input from big players. Instead, the initiatives came from researchers, small start-ups and tinkerers in their garages who experimented with printing threedimensional stuff. As is common with all technical revolutions, the “movement“ thrives on its early protagonists’ enthusiasm, which in our case happens to be mostly made up of middle-aged, male tech aficionados working in tandem with a complementary open-source community. These so-called “makers” espouse the trend toward personal production and the networking of things. Social utopians entertain dreams of re-possessing the means of production by the “masses”, tech enthusiasts the triumph of self-replicating machinery. The elation of a new age, together with goldrush-like optimism is palpable, notwithstanding that many young businesses soon will join the corporate world, fairly quickly abandoning their open-source ideals en route. Still, 3D printing is not without history. Long before the internet changed the world, laser-based processes for industrial applications had been developed, e.g. for the manufacture of prototypes and models to be used in the production of limited numbers of work pieces and building components. Other than is the case with standard injection moulding processes, 3D

printing bypasses the labour-intensive set- up of jigs, together with the various processes of cutting, lathing and drilling. As an undeniable fact, the 3D revolution’s social and economic repercussions are making themselves felt. In times where the life cycle of products continues to compress while the number and variety of products inexorably expands, the tirelessly working printing robots producing complex objects at precision levels unmatched by mere mortals, are just what the doctor ordered. Especially in the field of tool system technology, construction component production, medical device technology and the consumer goods industry, 3D print technology occupies an immensely important place. For those reasons and on the occasion of K 2013 (the international trade show for plastics and caoutchuc), the Düsseldorf trade show and VDMA decided to launch the 3D fab+print in October, 2013. Under its umbrella, all relevant Düsseldorf trade shows will in the future bring together their respective exhibitors with the goal of moving the entire subject into the crosshairs of industry observers. Related shows featuring 3D fab+print are the COMPAMED (November 12 through November 14, 2014), taking place simultaneously with MEDICA (November

pressideas/ commercial printing

below those of customized manufacture, yet at the very margins, some share of the manufacturing process may well be taken over by the consuming public itself. It would hardly be a detriment to the economy, since these unaffiliated manufacturers still need 3D technology besides materials and support…. at the same time creating brand new lines of business, e.g. printing services for those who are reluctant to invest in a 3D printer themselves. We all recall the unreal rates a square foot of digital printing on fabrics commanded back in its early years.

Birth pangs

12 through November 15, 2014), the four standbys GIFA, METEC, THERMPROCESS, and NEWCAST (June 16 through 20, 2015), in addition to drupa (May 31 through June 10, 2016).

Consequences of the 3D revolution 3D printing not only supplants, reconfigures and leverages traditional processes, but accelerates innovation by virtue of the fact that an instant creation of solid prototypes and tangible templates has numerous benefits. In the consumer space, unit costs of mass-produced articles will always stay

Hewlett Packard was the first of the large press manufacturers to enter the 3D printer business. Between 2010 and 2012, the US American IT company had struck an alliance with Israeli-American Stratasys. The result were devices with the names HP Designjet 3D and HP Designjet Color 3D, which however are no longer on the market. Now, HP is about to venture a second attempt. Meg Whitmann, HP’s CEO, made it a point to personally announce the initiative: “3D printers are still in their infancy”, stated Whitman. “It’s a great opportunity and we are very much committed. By the middle of next year, we will have something to show.” The strength of HP’s conviction may be somewhat debatable, though, since Ms Whitman stressed that actual revenue flow from the sector to the bottom line is a long way off. Indeed, patience is the order of the day, not the least because the costs of efficient 3D printers remain out of reach for

many, as is the raw printing material, the variety and selection of which still leaves much to be desired. In addition, the currently available machines run at an agonizingly slow pace. Meg Whithman described it thus: “To print a bottle may take eight to ten hours. All quite interesting, but it feels like watching grass grow.” The hope for these birth pangs to be soon a thing of the past seems to be justified, however. 3D printing is more than hyping some pipe dream, but a veritable revolution of production technology. Right now, 3D printing is mostly limited to CAD supported laser cutters, lathes or injection moulding machines, yet new ideas have benefited all industries over time. Incorporating 3D printing into the canon of printing technologies as a fourth pillar next to letterpress, offset and digital print is the right thing to do; no half-way measures, please. Sing its praises in high schools, vocational training classes, professional associations, and especially, companies. Online print shops print on the strangest objects like Christmas baubles and coffee mugs. It only makes sense to also create certain objects according to customer instructions as the infrastructure and skilled labour is already in place. A realistic prospect to profit handsomely is certainly there. The time is now to define and hone business models, for as you sow, so you shall reap. The potential of it all is reflected when taking a look at the shares of Stratasys. Ten years ago, they sold for $7.58. Today, they change hands for $114 and an end to the rally is nowhere in sight.

Market survey Getting your feet wet in 3D printing is relatively easy. Building sets and apparatuses for beginners can be had for around 300 Euro. Professional machines sell for 3,000 Euro and up. But these machines, being used in industrial applications, are under a great deal of pricing pressure. Analogous to 2D printing equipment, three categories of machinery have also emerged in the 3D sector: for home use, for professionals, and for industrial application. Two dozen manufacturers from all over the world are currently offering solutions for the press floor. Most of them were inspired by the RepRap project, originally conceived by Adrian Bowyer, a professor for evolutionary research at Bath university in England. RepRap stands for Replicating RapidPrototyper and is a 3D printing press, the

series—the capabilities of 3D printers are advanced enough right now to perform many conceivable and as yet inconceivable tasks.

One principle, many processes blueprint of which Bowyer had published under a GNU general public licence with the goal to achieve rapid proliferation. Vendors like Ultimaker and Makibox follow in its footsteps. The best-known American maker of 3Dprinters, Makerbot in NewYork used to be a non-profit organisation. Since 2013, it is a subsidiary of Stratasys and the current 3D printer model Replicator 2, unlike previous models, no longer bears any resemblance to the open source matrix. The English manufacturer Bits from Bytes was also bought out. The company started with the 3D printer RapMan, a commercial version of the open source hardware RepRap Darwin. In October 2010, the enterprise was taken over by the leader in the consumer sector, the American company 3D Systems. The South Carolina based organization is currently firing on all cylinders. Resources for research and production at their main plant in Waterford Business Park of Rock Hill are at the limit of their capacities; for those reasons, 3D Systems plans an additional site creating up to 133 new jobs. In the professional sector, Stratasys is the undisputed worldwide leader. The concern has two head offices in Eden Prarie (Minnesota, USA) and Rehovot (Israel) in addition to six branch offices, one of them in Rheinmünster near Baden-Baden, Germany. Stratasys’ product range extends from popular-priced desktop 3D printers all the way to large state-of-the-art 3D production systems. With 150 photo polymers and thermo plastics, it also features the largest assortment of special materials. World leader for industrial applications in the sector Laser Sintering is the EOS GmbH in Krailling near Munich/Bavaria. Dr. Hans J. Langer and Dr. Hans Steinbichler founded the company in 1989. It supplies customers like MTU, EADS, Daimler and BMW with 3D-printers for their production sites. China supports its 3D printer industry through TierTime Technology Co. Ltd., founded 2003 in Peking. Their devices are marketed under the name Inspire. In short: whether highend products, one of a kind, or small-scale

3D printing, also known as “Rapid Prototyping” or “Additive Manufacturing”, is based on the layering principle, an additive process by which the objects to be printed are built layer upon layer from several liquid or powder-like substances. In its course, chemical and/or physical processes precipitating curing and/or melting take place. For those reasons, the typical materials used are artificial resins, plastics, metals, ceramics and paper. Manufacturers currently use a number of 3D print processes, which in their application are fundamentally alike except for a few patented variations. Among the most notable processes employed are selective laser melting, electron beam melting for metals, selective laser sintering for plastics, stereo lithography, digital light processing, polyjet modeling for photopolymers, and fused deposition modelling for thermoplastics. Most 3D printers at this time process only a single type of material or some kind of blend. There have been tests, though, to use plastics with different degrees of hardness and colour in a combined printing process. Industry giant Stratasys took out a patent on a variation of layering by melting, or FDM technology (fused deposition

modelling). The FDM process melts delicate, semi-liquid strands of the thermoplastic acrylnitril-butadiene-styrol (ABS) with a spray nozzle, piling layer upon layer to eventually assume the final object’s shape. The PolyJet technology deploys photopolymers which are instantly cured under UV light and indistinguishable from products made by injection moulding. Beijing Daily moves into commercial printing with China’s first Goss M-800 web press Beijing Daily has installed a new heatset Goss web press as part of a strategy to diversify beyond its well-established newspaper production. In choosing the 32page Goss M-800 press, the company has signalled its intention to become a leading player in its regional commercial print market. Featuring a four-pages-around by fourpages-across (4x4) cylinder configuration, the M-800 model is capable of printing up to 80,000 16-page signatures per hour in straight production mode. The four-unit press system also incorporates a Goss Ecocool heatset dryer and Contiweb FD paster, as well as a Goss PCC-2 pinless folder. Previously running an exclusively coldset operation, Beijing Daily produces more than 2 million newspapers daily and its entry into the commercial market is expected to reach a similar scale over time. According to Jia Fudong, vice director for the Beijing Daily printing operation, the M-800 model was chosen with production versatility in mind. “The new press has already been called on to produce a wide range of products and formats,” explains Jia Fudong. “Demand for commercial products and heatset retail

inserts continues to increase alongside quality expectations in our region, so we’re very pleased that we decided to go with the clear leader in web press technology for this important step. Goss International’s position is well deserved, not only because they have supplied precisely the right capabilities for our production requirements, but also because the technology is backed up with a level of local support that ensures our longterm confidence.” The double-circumference M-800 press utilizes proven design elements from other Goss presses, including Sunday models, to achieve a unique combination of value and performance. Multidrive technology, bearerless cylinders and a 12-roll inking and dampening system deliver premium print quality as well as a high level of flexibility for changing production requirements. Tim Mercy, vice president of sales for Goss International, says the ability to print magazine, tabloid and other formats in straight or collect mode makes the M-800 model ideal for a company embarking on a new venture. “Beijing Daily needed a press that could adapt in line with the way the new business develops, while at the same time

being able to maintain the high standards expected due to its established reputation for both product content and quality. This is also an excellent option for commercial printers looking to expand their existing operation as its four-around press format complements existing two-around presses such as Goss M-600 and M-500 models,” he adds. Beijing Daily is part of the Beijing Daily Group, a media company that manages nine newspapers and three magazines as well as web sites, a publishing house and a television broadcasting station. The Group publishes the leading circulation newspapers in the area, including Beijing Daily, Beijing Evening News, Beijing Morning Post and Beijing Suburbs Daily.

Peak performance in format 6 Die-Cutting technology Heidelberg unveils new Dymatrix XL 145 CSB with optimum automation and maximum precision

“We currently have three Dymatrix die cutters in operation. Once Heidelberg had demonstrated the possibilities of the new Dymatrix 145 XL CSB, it didn’t take us long to make our decision. We are familiar with Dymatrix technology, and the new model is an innovative, state-of-the-art machine. - Peter Heim, Hepack

Industrial-scale folding carton manufacturers need appropriate die cutters to finish the sheets printed on their highly productive presses. Following numerous discussions about the requirements of customers in this market segment, Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) has now developed the Dymatrix XL 145 CSB - a peak performance die cutter for format 6 applications. Thanks to the new Dyset XL optical feed system, the new pneumatic chase, and further preset modules, the die cutter is systematically geared toward maximum productivity and optimum precision. Available with immediate effect, the preset modules boast tried-and-tested technologies from the Dymatrix 106 CSB high-performance die cutter such as fine adjustment of the die-cutting plate position and format setting at the feeder. The chase changer and the quick-action clamping system for the stripping and blanking stations ensure short makeready times during job changes. A completely redesigned main gear mechanism increases the speed to 9,000 sheets per hour. As with the Dymatrix 106 CSB, the gearing is based on the technology used in presses, with no temperamental worm drives. Prinect integrates the Dymatrix XL 145 CSB into the print shop workflow for maximum overall process efficiency. CSB stands for cutting, stripping, and blanking.

New Dyset XL optical feed system feed register accuracy and stable sheet travel at maximum speeds The Dymatrix XL 145 CSB operates according to the proven, patented moving upper platen principle, which delivers optimum quality even with the minimum number of break points. With the new Dyset XL feed system, each sheet is measured optically by three cameras, and the circumferential and lateral registers are then automatically aligned in the feeder. Sheets can be measured from the top and, optionally, from the bottom. Either the sheet edge, the printing mark or the print image is used for alignment purposes. The benefits of this dynamic alignment are maximum precision with a perfect die-cutting register of plus/minus 0.1 millimeters (0.0039 inches), fast makeready times, and a reduction in paper waste by preventing misaligned sheets.

Key Notes : > New Dyset XL optical feed system delivers feed register accuracy and stable sheet travel at maximum speeds. > Minimal makeready times thanks to camera adjustment via preset functions and straightforward operation. > New pneumatic chase ensures fast and reproducible tool changes.

major companies in the food and hygiene industries. Founded in 1981, it now has over 100 employees working in three shifts. The company processes more than 25,000 metric tons of solid board with grammages of up to 600 gsm each year. The pressroom includes a Speedmaster XL 105 six-color press with coating unit, a Speedmaster CD 102-6 with a double coating unit and a printing press in format 6. Hepack systematically ensures a sustainable printing process. For example, absolutely all die-cutting waste is recycled.

also possible to process less accurate piles. Narrow printing marks just 20 millimeters (0.79 inches) wide are sufficient. Like the color and register marks for Prinect Inpress Control, these marks can also be integrated into the print control strip if necessary. The positions of the printing marks can be saved and are easy to call up as preset settings for a repeat job using the machine’s touchscreen. This enables motorized camera positioning. The Dyset XL feed system is simple to operate and requires no maintenance, because all components are encapsulated. Remote maintenance is possible using Prinect Remote Service. To sum up, the machine scores highly in terms of productivity and process stability. This is facilitated by the new pneumatic chase with compressed air, which delivers fast tool changes with excellent repeat accuracy. The chase requires no maintenance and benefits from a long service life. A high level of automation is achieved by the new function for fine adjustment of the die-cutting plate. Here, too, saving preset settings enables repeat jobs to be completed in no time at all. The compact chase changer speeds up the exchange of different cutting dies considerably and extends the die cutter’s extensive level of automation further still.

First user - folding carton printer Hepack expects to boost productivity with two Dymatrix XL 145 CSB die cutters Based in the southern German town of Neuenstein, Hepack Druck + Verpackung GmbH is building a completely new print shop over the coming year to secure future growth and a general improvement in efficiency. “Customers want their jobs at

the right time and expect excellent quality at favourable prices,” says Managing Director Peter Heim, describing the daily challenges facing a folding carton printer. The comprehensive equipment package includes two new Dymatrix XL 145 CSB die cutters with the Dyset XL feed system. The first will be installed before the end of this year and the second at the end of 2014. The new building is scheduled for completion in fall 2014. “We currently have three Dymatrix die cutters in operation here - two Dymatrix 106 machines and a Dymatrix 142. Once Heidelberg had demonstrated the possibilities of the new Dymatrix 145 XL CSB, it didn’t take us long to make our decision. We are familiar with Dymatrix technology, and the new model is an innovative, stateof-the-art machine. Above all, we expect it to be highly accurate, less likely to develop faults, and thus more productive,” adds Heim. Typical run lengths at the company are between 30,000 and 40,000 sheets per job on average. Environmental protection is extremely important to Hepack. Prinect will integrate the two new Dymatrix XL 145 die cutters into the print shop workflow, which will mean less paper waste and transparent processes. What’s more, the new machines require only half as much power as their predecessors, which will have a positive impact on energy efficiency. “The new die cutters will enable us to be even more successful in meeting our customers’ extremely high demands when it comes to quality and end-to-end process control,” stresses Heim. His company is investing in two die cutters to ensure high process reliability. Hepack has gained itself an excellent reputation throughout Europe as an innovative packaging printing specialist for

KODAK SONORA XP Plates offer new plate size and gauge KODAK SONORA XP Process Free Plates, a favourite choice among medium-size printers, are now more accessible for large commercial printers. With new larger plate sizes and a 0.40 mm gauge, SONORA XP Plates are allowing more printers to shift to process-free plate production, yielding environmental and economic benefits without sacrificing performance. KODAK SONORA XP Process Free Plates remove the chemistry, electricity, water and equipment used in plate processing, while delivering the quality, productivity and print capabilities of mainstream processed plates. SONORA XP Plates are now available in plate widths up to 1,495 mm, and Kodak is scaling up with even larger plate sizes over the next several months. VLF plate sizes, a variety of gauges—including 0.40 mm—and fast imaging speeds make SONORA XP Plates ideal for a wide range of medium and large commercial printers. Removing processing can deliver significant cost, environmental and process control benefits for printers of all sizes, and with SONORA XP Plates, Kodak has been striking down the barriers that have prevented large printers from adopting process-free plates in the past. The new VLF plate size and 0.40 mm gauge are the latest in a string of developments—including faster imaging speeds, longer run lengths, darker plate contrast, and broader print capability— that have expanded the reach of SONORA XP Plates.

“More than 2,000 customers have embraced the process-free revolution by Kodak. The SONORA XP Process Free Plate is the next step in the evolution of process-free thermal plate technology,” said Rich Rindo, General Manager of Kodak’s Worldwide Graphics Marketing organization. “Customers are switching to SONORA XP Plates from mainstream processed plates because they can get a product that meets their customers’ demanding print needs, while at the same time reducing their overall operational costs and environmental footprint.” Not only do SONORA XP Plates satisfy the needs of small, medium and large commercial sheetfed print production, they also deliver strong print performance on commercial heatset and coldset web presses, in offset packaging applications, and even in short-run UV. Prior to SONORA XP Plates, commercial printers with higher productivity and print capability requirements were unable to take advantage of the cost and environmental benefits derived from process-free plate technology due to their business needs. This new class of process-free plates from Kodak provides the environmental and economic benefits of no plate processing, yet delivers the quality, productivity and print capability comparable to mainstream processed plates. The larger sizes of SONORA XP Plates address the needs of even more medium

and large commercial printers. Grafiche Esposti, a printer in Italy looking to combine the colour fidelity and high-quality images required for its customers’ display stands, recently turned to Kodak for a more sustainable print production and invested in a KODAK MAGNUS VLF Platesetter and 0.40 mm KODAK SONORA XP Process Free Plates in formats of up to two square meters, a sector first. “Colour fidelity needs to be perfect for display stands and the KODAK SONORA XP Process Free Plates ensure that it is,” said Silvano Finelli, owner of the Kodak plate distributor F.lli Finelli. “Not only are our customers satisfied with the quality of the results, but many brands are highly conscious of the environment so they also greatly appreciate the fact that their displays are printed using plates with a low environmental impact.”

Flint Group Flexographic Products expands equipment range Flint Group Flexographic Products has further developed its equipment portfolio with the introduction of the nyloflex® Dryer FIII and the nyloflex® Light Finisher FIII. These two premium quality systems have been specifically designed to deliver excellent productivity, consistency and quality for processing flexographic printing plates – particularly when used in combination with the nyloflex® NExT Exposure FIII, with the two new devices combining to provide perfect results. The three chamber design of the nyloflex® Dryer FIII with individual temperature control enables energy savings with an increased drying efficiency. The economical construction of the device makes it profitable for the user and helps to reduce costs. Furthermore, six drying drawers allow for easy and comfortable handling.

The high performance UV-A and UV-C tubes of the nyloflex® Light Finisher FIII result in very short processing times. All lamps are equipped with electronic ballast and start simultaneously. Therefore, an exchange of starters is not necessary. Moreover, the operating hours of the tubes are metered automatically and recorded separately for post-exposure and light finishing. The innovative nyloflex® NExT Exposure utilises high intensity UV-A LEDs as light source. Thus, a rapid crosslinking of the photopolymer surface is achieved before oxygen inhibition can occur, resulting in a flat top dot structure on the printing plate and a virtual 1:1 image reproduction from the digital file to the finished plate. The high level of UV emission leads to a significant improvement in the reproduction of the fine relief elements. When combined with high resolution surface

screening, the resulting surface texture of the flat top dots provides an optimal surface to enhance ink laydown, ink density, and consistency in printing. And as for other Flint Group equipment, the exposure promises productivity - further consumables and processing steps, such as lamination or the use of inert gases, are not necessary. Compared to standard UV tubes, the UV LEDs show a significantly higher level of UV intensity, a much more consistent emission and longer lifetime. In addition to the nyloflex® NExT Exposure F III (for formats up to 920 x 1200 mm / 36 x 47 inches) a nyloflex® NExT Exposure F V (for formats up to 1320 x 2032 mm / 52 x 80 inches) is available as well.

digital printing operations into automated estimating, scheduling, job ticketing, accounting and other processes by integrating their Fiery DFEs with EFI’s suite of industry-leading MIS/ERP products, including EFI Pace™ and EFI Monarch™. Many printing companies already use integrated EFI Fiery and PRINERGY Workflow operations to optimize their offset and digital operations. Indianapolis-based printing firm Priority Press - a company that also uses Pace and EFI’s Online Print Solutions webto-print and eCommerce software - has had very positive results implementing Fiery after purchasing its second Canon digital color press. “On our first Canon digital press, we implemented another DFE because of its ability to integrate with PRINERGY Workflow,” said Priority Press President Joe Straka. “However, Fiery can do that as well now, and we felt comfortable staying within the EFI product set to meet that need. Also, we were already running Fiery with our Epson proofers so we were familiar with its operation, workflow and capabilities.” In the short time that his company’s Canon imagePRESS 7010 with a Fiery DFE has been operational, Straka reports that he is getting more throughput from the Fierypowered Canon compared to the other front end.

added. “Plus it is well supported, so our operators can be better educated and more effective.” Fiery DFE integration with PRINERGY Workflow 6 provides a number of important features for advanced production operations including: • The flexibility to add equipment from different leading production printer manufacturers without changing workflows. • Highly accurate and more-efficient media information showing current tray contents of each digital press. • EFI’s Fiery Command WorkStation®, an intuitive, drag-and-drop system for latestage queue management, job preview, make-ready and job editing. • JDF-certified workflow, with automated communication of job intent data and meta-data for reduced errors and higher efficiency. The Fiery DFE is the only DFE in the industry to achieve JDF certification for digital printing. It also supports a wide range of industry variable-data print standards and integrates with many third-party prepress solutions in addition to PRINERGY Workflow 6. Fiery integration with PRINERGY Workflow 6 is one of numerous advanced technical features that will be presented at the EFI Connect Users Conference, January 21-24 in Las Vegas.

The Label Industry manages lifecycle change FINAT Young Managers Club learns how to lead the way at YMC Summit As in every aspect of life, time has not stood still for the self-adhesive label industry. Since its beginnings in the 1930s, it has evolved continuously on every front – in terms of materials, print technologies, dispensing technologies, and, of course, people. Many of the entrepreneurs who, in the 1970s and 1980s, created the extraordinary web of small label printing businesses that formed the backbone of today’s massive global industry are today retirees. Their companies – which have claimed some 50% of the world’s label business – have been the subject of M&A activity, of cross-border partnerships. However, as in all family businesses, as time moves on, they are the subject of generation change. FINAT’s Young Managers Club – a lively part of the European self-adhesive labelling association’s infrastructure– is dedicated to making that process work.

Great ideas with limited resources The FINAT Young Managers Club held its second Summit in Warsaw in November 2013. Its headline – ‘great ideas with limited resources’ – was chosen to reflect the challenges the industry faces in terms of rising costs and competitive technologies, but most of all to create a professional platform for grasping, and successfully developing, future business opportunities. Some 40 ‘young managers’ from companies

representing the self-adhesive labelling supply chain across Europe and beyond, came together at the Summit to benefit both from a strong agenda that combined the context of the industry with leading-edge management practice through workshops, and valuable networking opportunities.

Business model innovation Leading companies around the globe recognise the need to rethink their business models to reflect the current environment. The first summit workshop on ‘Where can we innovate?’, took the participants through the process of ‘sketching’ a business model canvas. By identifying the structural segments – customers, offer and needs, infrastructure, and financials – and the key trends, market forces, macroeconomic and industry forces that impinge upon them, different approaches to a business model profile can be tested and adopted. Starting with a blank business model ‘canvas’, participants formed small groups to look at the extant business models in different label market segments – from wines and spirits to pharmaceuticals –defining their strengths and weaknesses. Their task then was to identify ways to improve them, and then to present their results for the benefit of all the delegates. The efficacy of the exercise was strongly proven by the amount of lively feedback from the floor.

Label industry trends and opportunities Next morning’s programme opened with an evaluation of trends and opportunities within the label industry, from Roger Pellow (UK), Chairman, Labels & Packaging Group, Tarsus – publishers of Labels & Labeling International and founders and organisers of the Labelexpo event. “This is a great industry… but we are in a time of change – change in technology, and generation change. We are moving from a craft industry to a technology industry.” Mr Pellow showed how the role and function of labels are changing – for example, from an information carrier to a communications medium – and discussed the implications of the major external and internal developments today for the way the industry can successfully conduct its business. His overarching message was uncompromising. Managing change and implementing innovation in today’s label industry demands greater knowledge, education, and training.

Doing more with less One of the major contributors to an efficient, cost-effective modus operandi in business today is lean manufacturing – and this was the topic that dominated the rest of the Summit’s agenda. Efficiency improvement is not only in manufacturing. Purpose, process, and people are all important parts of the equation. It is important to see the whole before fixing the parts.

the aim was to create a platform where incoming business leaders could connect FINAT’s successful past with a dynamic future. Now, five years later, the YMC itself has become an established feature of FINAT’s structure. Yet it is still refreshing to experience the continuing stream of the YMC’s high-quality, interactive, and businessoriented programmes, which are setting new standards in FINAT.’ “I am proud to have been chosen to represent the new generation of our dynamic industry,” said Dana Kilarska, Young Managers Club President. “I am grateful for the opportunity the YMC has given me and my contemporaries to step into the future with the help of professionals and experts who can really broaden our knowledge and capabilities. We are young and eager to learn.”

Defining the business matrix: from problem definition to measurable results. In another workshop participants were challenged, in groups, to complete an X-matrix chart, integrating strategies, tactics, processes, and results, for a specific type of business. This activity is acknowledged to be a valuable way of drawing together the different strings that make up a business. The matrix helps management to define its breakthrough goals; the desired business results to be achieved – a compass for strategy development and execution; the process metrics to be used; and the selection of implementation tactics and projects. Team members are named within the matrix, along with their responsibilities, and are accountable; and the final coordination and alignment, across the whole matrix, along with all complexities and dependencies, may be resolved step by step. Key message here is all about the importance of strategy. Strategy is a process that is lived daily or not at all. Strategy is not just lip service, but hard work, with transparent project planning, accountability, and control. Participants were very impressed with the clear, focused, and comprehensive view that this thought matrix presented, truly reflecting the aim of their summit – implementing ‘great ideas with limited resources’. Jules Lejeune, FINAT’s Managing Director, was full of praise for the event, and

for the energy and enthusiasm of the Young Managers Club membership, and commented: ‘When the FINAT Young Managers Club was founded on the occasion of our 50th anniversary in 2008,

Next year event is a special YMC Global Congress in Chicago, USA, September 2014, jointly organised with TLMI (US) and LMAI (IN).

Q.I. Press Controls is supporting their strategy by installing 129 mRC+ register control camera’s for both colour register and cut-off register on different press lines. Punjab Kesari Group is pursuing growth. Not only by adding additional editions in markets such as Delhi, Simla, Bathinda and Rohtak, but they also want to further improve the quality level of their products. They are investing in completely new printing plants and are simultaneously upgrading existing presses with more automation like motorization, automatic colour and cut-off register controls, spray bar dampening. “We are working from an ideologically and technologically sophisticated vision. Our business strategy keeps us in a profitable position and amongst the leaders in the newspaper industry,” indicates Mr. Amit Chopra, Vice Chairman & Jt. Managing Director of Punjab Kesari Group. Punjab Kesari Group has put its trust into Q.I. Press Controls for automating the colour- and cut-off register control. Each of the seven 4-high printing units of the Manugraph Cityline Express will be equipped with 2 mRC+ camera’s for colour register control and 1 mRC+ camera’s for cut-off control with marks. The same goes for the six 4-high printing unit counting Ronald Web Offset

press: 129 register camera’s in total. The mRC+ is a digital camera with an integrated microprocessor ensuring that the measured data is processed in real-time. It has 3 functions in 1 scanner: colour register, cut-off register and sidelay register. As the camera can read from an unsupported web, the system can be mounted directly after the last print couple ensuring a very tight control loop. Because the different colours are automatically brought into register while starting up substantial savings can be realized with regard to labour and waste whilst enhancing the print quality to a constant, high level. “Because of good references from users of Q.I. Press Controls’ mRC+ systems our team was convinced that the partnership with Q.I. Press Controls would be the better option for our upgrade investment. The fully automated operation of Q.I. Press Controls’ systems, the user-friendly and logical operating interfaces will considerably increase the effectiveness of Punjab Kesari Group’s production platform.” Mr. Amit Chopra concludes: “We also feel that Q.I. Press Controls’ personal way of approaching customers whether it is in sales or service will be beneficial to us.” “For us this order is important as with this order we can add the first big Newspaper group in local language of the Northern part of India to our client base. Q.I. Press Controls’ mRC-3D well received at WAN-IFRA India This year’s WAN-IFRA exhibitions have been the stage for Q.I. Press Controls to present its innovations. During WAN-IFRA India 2013 the Indian market had its first live introduction of the mRC-3D register camera. The mRC-3D needs a lighter securing framework and less installation space. Equipped with double sensors in a smaller casing, with increased effectiveness of the web lighting, it is an excellent way of keeping production costs in check. The printers, customers were quite enthusiastic and excited with the compact but rugged design of the mRC-3D camera. The AIMS (Automatic Ink Mist Shield) is

what‘s most characteristic about the mRC3D: the automated clearing feature of the register control camera. A Vice President of one leading newspaper group remarked “When operators are notified of a failure due to paper dust deposits and/ or ink mists, they need to clean the glass in front of the sensor of the camera in question. To operators, that is an unwelcome interruption. As efficiency optimisation puts increasing pressure on maintenance, I am delighted to see that the mRC-3D AIMS offers a solution that will automate that process.” The camera casing of the sensors is covered with a crystal-clear static-neutral

plastic film in a wind-on cassette. Should the protective film of the mRC-3D camera get smudged, the camera will automatically wind a clean section of foil in front of the camera’s sensors. The mRC-3D camera can function dirt-free for approximately three months. Replacing the roll of film is easy and only takes a few minutes. “These new functionalities only add to the realized waste savings by the mRC-3D. All without stopping the pres and intervene the production process”, that is what was explained by a sales manager of a Japanese press supplier. As the mRC-3D can read from an unsupported web it can be mounted directly after the first print couple. This gives a very tight control loop where colours can be adjusted and brought into register quickly. Waste savings up to 20% can be realized. “We are convinced that the mRC-3D will continue its success in India,” says Mr Vijay Pandya, Managing Director of Q.I. Press Controls India. “In India, there is still a great demand to improve the productivity and quality of the printed product. However on the other hand one needs to reduce the costs. The features shared by all Q.I. Press Controls’ solutions, such as high automation, low energy consumption, minimal maintenance and the latest state of the art in remote maintenance, make a valuable contribution to reducing expenditure on human and operating resources.”

KBA Cortina users meet at marks-3zet At the end of November 2013 one of the print industry’s most active and successful user groups, waterless KBA Cortina newspaper press printers, met for the ninth time. The workshop took place in Mülheim/Ruhr (Germany) at the headquarters of marks3zet, the host of this Cortina user meeting. Marks-3zet is seen as one of the most important partners of the supply industry by many Cortina users. However, the Mülheimbased company is not just a sales partner for Toray waterless printing plates. The firm actively works on improving and developing waterless offset printing technology further in its waterless printing centre. Additionally, since 2012 marks-3zet has been a general contractor for pre-press solutions in newspaper houses, adding another string to its bow in this segment of the print industry.

material valuations by the “paper and ink” workgroup and the “error analysis/quality management” workgroup informed the participants of their results.

Some 60 print experts took part in the meeting as a raft of ink and paper manufacturers sent representatives to Mülheim to participate in sharing experiences from the pressroom as well as to answer the users’ various questions.

Cortina project manager Peter Benz together with his colleagues from KBA presented further technological developments as well as exemplary print projects from the circle of users. These products, some of which have been awarded prizes, strikingly demonstrate the high quality delivered by the Cortina in commercial printing.

The workshop’s agenda included detailed

The Cortina users have formed a strong alliance which was reflected in the number of participants at the event: 15 companies – and thus almost all current Cortina print shops – were present in Mülheim. They are particularly delighted that two more newspaper houses in Trier (Germany) and Trondheim (Norway) recently chose to invest in environmentally friendly, waterless offset. This user group even has subgroups, one of which, the “Nordic Group”, was founded

KBA implements further steps in restructuring its core business The situation on the international printing press market remains tense given the increasing significance of online media and regional economic problems. Growing submarkets, such as packaging and digital printing, oppose shrunken segments, such as publication and newspaper printing. Structural changes in the printing industry have continued since the start of the financial crisis in autumn 2008. The word’s second-largest printing press manufacturer, Koenig & Bauer AG (KBA), started to react to this development already in early 2009 by restructuring the distribution of work between its plants. It has since reduced its capacity by 25% in its core sheetfed and web offset business, which has been especially effected. The number of employees on the group payroll has fallen from 8,200 in 2007 to some 6,300. This total will fall below 6,000

with phased retirement schemes and other measures coming into effect. With effect from 1 January 2013 collective special regulations, which were agreed by KBA, employee representatives and representatives from IG Metall, come into place at the main plants in Würzburg and Radebeul. Introduced to alleviate fluctuations in capacity utilisation, these amendments also serve to improve the profitability of the core sheetfed and web press business. The amendments to the wage agreements will be in place until the end of 2014 and contain, among other things, the removal of hours from flexitime accounts without adjusting wages as well as a reduction in the weekly regular working times with corresponding adjustments to wages and salary.

Today flexibility counts: one-stop production of a web press side frame at the KBA facility in Würzburg

Two of three lawsuits against QIPC dismissed At QuadTech’s request, the U.S. District Court has dismissed charges and counter-charges in two ongoing cases between QuadTech and QIPC. The cases have been in court in the United States since 2009. “QuadTech filed these cases to prevent QIPC from selling and advertising its mRC markless and IDS systems in the United States because they infringed on our patents and we felt QIPC’s advertisements were misleading,” said QuadTech President Karl Fritchen. “No infringing mRC sales have occurred anywhere since we filed suit, and QIPC ceased its deceptive advertising. The patent at issue also recently expired,

with only a single infringing IDS sale having occurred—over five years ago.” “With so little at stake any longer, it simply made no economic sense to keep litigating,” Fritchen explained. “So we asked the Court to dismiss both our claims and QIPC’s counter-claims, and the Court agreed with us. In the process, QIPC forfeited whatever right

it may have had to argue that QuadTech’s infringement and false advertising claims were incorrect.” There is still one pending patent case against QIPC’s Intelligent Density System (IDS) that is not yet resolved.

Webcrafters’ new business growth spurs the addition of second KODAK PROSPER press As more and more publishers have turned to digital printing to reduce inventories and manage supply chains, Webcrafters has seen digital page volumes rise significantly. The company installed a KODAK PROSPER 5000XL Press three years ago, and it is now preparing for the installation of an additional KODAK PROSPER 5000XLi Press in early 2014 to handle continued growth. Webcrafters, based in Madison, Wisconsin, has been serving the educational and trade book market for more than 100 years and knows the importance of dependability and redundancy when the rush hits. With almost 400 employees, Webcrafters operates three shifts a day, five days a week most of the time, but ramps up to 24/7 when needed during seasonal high volumes in the spring and summer. Webcrafters has seen steady growth in page volumes for digital printing across all the segments it serves, from educational and trade books to B2B catalogs and publications. The new press will give the company more flexibility for longer digital runs and fits into its strategy for growth and delivering the best results for its customers. “The PROSPER Platform has continued to evolve since its introduction, and many of our customers are now installing additional devices to handle rising volumes or new revenue opportunities,” said Jerry Miller, Kodak’s Vice President and Regional Business Manager of US&C Digital Printing Solutions. “Upgradability is an important part of the entire Kodak portfolio—customers can invest in an inkjet press platform today with the knowledge that their solution will grow and expand as needed. The PROSPER 5000XLi Press is a perfect example.” When talking about the decision to invest in a second KODAK PROSPER Press, John Filsinger, Senior Vice President of Operations at Webcrafters, cites scalability, redundancy and Webcrafters’ long relationship and experience with Kodak. “Scalability is a very important factor for us, and the PROSPER Press family gives us that capability,” he said. “We continue to update our first press with all the new features, so the two presses will

be virtually identical. We don’t have to worry about these presses getting outdated— which speaks to Kodak’s commitment to ongoing innovation.

in-line KODAK PROSPER Image Optimizer Station (IOS), which automatically prepares commercially available substrates for inkjet printing at full press speeds.

“Over the years, we have felt that Kodak really understands our needs, and has always delivered cutting-edge technology,” he added. “We have relied on Kodak for film, plates, and digital printing technology from the beginning. We’ve been using several KODAK NEXPRESS Digital Production Color Presses for shorter runs and for covers and tabs, and continue to do so. Kodak has been and continues to be a good partner offering the right solutions to meet our business objectives.”

“One of the challenges we have is that we do a lot of work with very heavy ink coverage,” noted Filsinger. “The PROSPER Press handles ink coverage very well—better than any of the competitive solutions we looked at in the market.”

The PROSPER 5000XLi Press offers full process color perfecting with a print width of up to 24.5 inches (62.23 centimeters) at speeds up to 650 feet (200 meters) per minute with a duty cycle of 90 million A4 or US letter pages a month. The system is capable of print quality that rivals offset output—up to 175 lpi. It features the Intelligent Print System (IPS), which combines in-line video monitoring and advanced software controls to process thousands of press inputs that measure imaging performance, detecting variations and making adjustments as needed on the fly. Other highlights of the press include an auto-adjusting intake system that simplifies changing paper stocks; a variablelength paper path to improve drying; an advanced drying system that adjusts for ink load, web speed, and substrate; and the

“We will be expanding our line of supported substrates, which will open new markets for us,” added Brad Koch, Vice President of Sales for Webcrafters. “The PROSPER Press is enabling us to serve our clients with new and enhanced offerings, and we are already seeing the benefits. Our clients trust that we will be able to help them achieve their goals by utilizing the best technology along with the outstanding service we are committed to deliver.”

3D Systems to acquire a portion of Xerox’s Oregon based solid Ink engineering and development teams 3D Systems and Xerox has announced a transaction designed to leverage both companies’ 3D printing capabilities to accelerate growth. 3D Systems entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Xerox Corporation’s Wilsonville, Oregon product design, engineering and chemistry group and related assets for $32.5 million in cash. Both companies expect the transaction to close soon, subject to fulfillment of certain customary conditions. This agreement expands the decade and a half long collaboration between the companies that already produced 3DS’ best selling ProJet® series 3D printers. “We are pleased to expand our relationship with an innovative partner of the caliber of Xerox and expect that acquiring some of the Xerox Wilsonville engineering team, together with their state-of the-art development labs and selected licensed IP, to catapult our 3D printers’ development and manufacturing

capabilities forward,” said Avi Reichental, 3D Systems’ President and CEO. “This bold step is consistent with our belief that we must act quickly and decisively to extend and cement our marketplace leadership position by taking full advantage of the window of unprecedented opportunity in front of us.” “This deal takes advantage of Xerox’s world-class capabilities and expands our relationship with 3D Systems in the exciting and dynamic 3D printing industry,” said Kevin Warren, President of Xerox Strategic Growth Initiatives. “It emphasizes how we are leveraging our expertise while we continue to evolve our business model and pursue strategic growth opportunities.” As part of this agreement, 3DS expects to add more than 100 experienced Xerox engineers and contractors specializing in product design and materials science to its global R&D team and immediately

begin to operate its own facility within the Xerox Wilsonville campus. Xerox will maintain ink and print head development resources along with research relevant for digital printing and the 3D markets. In connection with this strategic investment, 3DS expects to progressively increase its annual R&D expenditures by approximately 75% to 100% over the next few years as it completes certain Xerox related engineering services commitments and fully leverages its expanded capabilities. “The stronger our marketplace leadership, the more powerful our economic model becomes,” continued Reichental. “Simply put, a solidified position translates directly to higher revenue, higher profitability and greater earnings power over time and we are willing to sacrifice short term earnings to get there faster.”

Xerox responds to the latest trend with its services-led, technology driven engagement model “Over the years Cloud, Big Data, Mobility & Security have emerged as industry mega trends that IT managers and CIO’s have been closely observing. While adoption of cloud was largely restricted in Enterprise businesses but this year a significant number of SME’s also deployed cloud based solutions. Xerox has been monitoring these

changes closely and has been leading the industry in responding to these changes. A case in point is the new ConnectKey Controller that powers our new range of devices to integrate seamlessly into real world scenario of mobility, security, BYOD and cloud adoption. ConnectKey MFPs offer mobile printing and scanning solutions that integrate fully with cloud-based technologies and mobile devices. These provide the benefits of enhanced convenience, increased productivity and a more cost-effective infrastructure. We have also noticed a growing trend over the last couple of years on the adoption of MPS in enterprise and SME’s and businesses are looking more and more for document solutions instead of standalone printing. The MPS market during 2014 is likely to keep gaining further traction and the industry continues to grow at the rate of 30% CAGR according to the Xerox- Ernst & Young survey. We see a fundamental structural change happening in the enterprise landscape where more and more customers are shifting from

a Cap-Ex driven captive print infrastructure to an Op-Ex led Managed Print Services, thereby reaping the benefits of lower costs, enhanced productivity, mobile/cloud printing, user and cost center-based accounting and security features, effective print governance via SLA assurance and single point of accountability. Xerox has pioneered document outsourcing and managed print services globally and has responded to this trend by putting even more emphasis on its Services-led, technology driven engagement model. As the worldwide leader for MPS, Xerox is well positioned to continue its strong hold on the marketplace as the leader in Business Process & Document management Solutions space.” - Mr. Rajat Jain, MD

Digital to drive future graphics revenue suggests FESPA community survey FESPA Digital 2014 (Messe Munich, 20 to 23 May 2014) could mark a tipping point for the wide format graphics sector, with a survey of the FESPA printing community forecasting the prevalence of digital by 2015. Over half of the 250 printers surveyed by Infotrends on behalf of FESPA in Summer 2013 reported that wide format digital now represents more than a third of their revenue. In two years’ time, 72% of respondents expect this to be the case, with 54%

forecasting half their business to come from digital, and almost a third anticipating that digital will make up one third of their income. The respondents to the survey spanned 53 countries. Solvent and aqueous inkjet continue to dominate the installed base among those surveyed, with 48% and 43% of printers respectively reporting ownership of these technologies. However, eco solvent, UV curable and latex printing are gaining ground. The proportion of work produced using UV curable inkjet is forecast by the community to grow from 13.6% now to 21% by 2015, contrasted with a drop from 18% to 13% for solvent UV.

Buyer Trends Driving Digital (vs. Analog) Production Strong wide format digital equipment buying intentions

This focus on digital is creating a positive mood towards technology investment. Buying intentions are stronger than at any time since 2007, with 51% of respondents planning to purchase a new digital wide format printer in the next year, up from 37% in 2010. Evolving technologies are stimulating demand, with almost a third planning to invest in UV inkjet, 16% in eco-solvent and 13% in latex.

Buyer demands drive investment plans

applications are the fastest growing. 81% of printers report handling more textile work, followed by 71% for POP, 69% for wallpaper, 68% for building wraps, and 67% for industrial print. 81% of output is currently on flexible media, but 27% of planned hardware investments are being made with a view to printing onto rigid substrates, suggesting that this media mix will change in the foreseeable future, as POP, interior and industrial applications gain ground.

More than half of those planning to invest are doing so to achieve faster output, proving that productivity is still a key factor for printers. This reflects the fact that faster turnaround and just-in-time delivery remain the two dominant trends among customer demands. More than two-thirds of printers say these trends prevail among their customers.

FESPA CEO Neil Felton comments: “Feedback from our community affirms that the transition to digital continues to shape the wide format signage and graphics sector, while digital technology also motivates printers to diversify into creative applications for customers from many different verticals.

Other notable buyer trends are that 57% of printers now say their customers are demanding delivery to the point of need, while 48% report more complex logistics requirements. These responses potentially point to an opportunity for printers to extend their service proposition and offer a more complete print-to-installation service.

“What’s exciting for us is that the responses indicate a level of optimism unprecedented since 2007, a year before the global economic crisis. It’s clear that innovation and the pursuit of new application opportunities are giving entrepreneurs increased confidence in the performance of their own businesses - which promises to give FESPA Digital 2014 in Munich a positive and forward-thinking vibe.”

Integration of print with other communication channels is clearly taking hold, with 49% saying that customers are looking for more integration with other media, and 42% citing demand for cross media devices to connect print with online media.

New applications fuel growth Banners (71%), posters (55%) and signs (53%) remain the top three applications being produced. However, textiles, POP, wallpaper/ interiors, building wraps and ‘industrial’
