2nd drupa Global Insights Report Touch the future - Applications that can create growth
Demand for print has dropped in recent years, in part because of the recession, in part because of the impact of digital communications. Despite this there are strong reasons to be confident about the future of the global printing industry, but only if the industry adapts its products and services to the changing demands of consumers. This report highlights strategic shifts in global demographics, economics and consumer lifestyles that will fundamentally change the demand for print. At the same time, technological development is both reducing the demand for conventional print and creating fresh opportunities for digital print. Suppliers and printers the world over must review how their specific markets are evolving and make clear print application investment decisions based on their findings.
The objective in this report is to identify how digital technology is both changing the demand for print but also allowing fresh print applications to create growth opportunities. It demonstrates that a good print application will only fulfill its potential for turnover growth and profitability if it is well planned, integrated and marketed.
Key Notes : > Despite recent drop in demand, print has strong future. > Drupa 2016 will be an ideal opportunity ensuring a profitable future for printers. > Replacement capacity will be of keen interest at drupa 2016.

Drupa 2016 will be an ideal opportunity to promote and/or purchase those print applications that will ensure a profitable future for printers. However the survey has demonstrated decisively that choosing the right print application is not enough. You must first plan, then effectively implement, integrate and market your application if good profits are to be made.
The bigger picture For the next 30 years at least, the world’s population
will continue to grow, albeit almost exclusively amongst developing nations. Literacy and living standards will improve amongst the developing nations, so the demand for print will continue to grow in line with the greater population. At the same time the inexorable rise in trade will, ignoring the setbacks
pressideas/ commercial printing
caused by recessions, also create greater demand for print. Against that must be set the impact of digital communications with the unstoppable rises in both Internet access and use of mobile technology. Print advertising, which pays for much of print, is falling rapidly amongst developed nations, but consumer expenditure on print is falling much more slowly. Audiences are fragmenting as advertisers and publishers play catch-up with the shift to niche marketing and 1-1 relationships compared with their traditional mass-market approach. There are seismic shifts in the way that consumers expect brands and governments to communicate with them. Multi-channel applications are emerging that can ensure print plays a central role in those communications, by using the very technologies that are driving the external underlying change. This report is about how to grasp those opportunities successfully.
The impact of new print applications In spring 2015 the 2nd drupa Global Trends report based on a sample of 810 printers from around the world, stated that 50% of printers reported declining conventional print volumes and 48% reported declining lead

times. At the same time, 38% of commercial printers reported that more than 25% of turnover was from digital print, whilst the equivalent figure was 25% for publishing printers, just 11% for packaging printers but 59% for functional printers. When the Trends panel was asked about their investment intentions, 51% stated they would go for new print technology, 48% for finishing and 41% for prepress/workflow/MIS. It will be to research and clarify those decisions that most of them will attend drupa 2016. Yet for many, the best route to improved and sustainable performance will be by investing, not in simple replacement equipment (essential though that may be), but in integrated print applications that offer fresh products or services to meet evolving customer demands. All printers and suppliers must understand that at its heart print is another form of manufacturing and that manufacturing is undergoing fast and fundamental changes driven by digital technology. Being digital requires a re-examination of your entire way of doing business and understanding where new value can be created, which could be from new automated and integrated production, new markets, new products or new customers.
Whilst in volume terms analogue print will continue to dominate for many years, (and therefore replacement capacity will be of keen interest at drupa 2016); it will be digital print combined with workflow automation that increases reliability and product quality, and makes it easier to create flexible production processes that can add value to the product lifecycle. Workflow automation is probably the most important IT investment a company can make, yet few printers will put this high on their shopping lists. The success of different printing sectors and their applications will depend on the integration of printed products with web and mobile communication platforms that are underpinned by data services and automated workflows.
Making print applications succeed 741 printers from around the world participated in the survey conducted for this report. We examined 4 markets – commercial, publishing, packaging and functional with a total of 26 different applications. On average the panel had implemented 2.8 applications, clear evidence of the need to diversify their range of services. We have heard of many success stories and included a few of these in the report, but many respondents were honest and reported

failures or least major setbacks on the road to implementation. Such disappointments are not surprising when you hear of the casual manner in which many applications were implemented, with little advance planning, modest integration and only basic conventional marketing applied. We asked what were the key challenges faced and the panel told us it was poor market pricing and a lack of effective sales staff. Those were standard explanations masking the uncomfortable truth, as evident by the more detailed examination of how the panel tackled planning, integration and marketing. However what is striking is regardless of how efficiently printers implemented new applications, some applications offered a quicker payback on average than others and the differences were not explained by the size of the original investment. For example short-run batch book production had on average over double the payback period than that of on-demand book production. Similarly business stationery applications had over double the payback period of multichannel marketing applications and digitally printed corrugated applications had a payback four times longer than that for digitally printed flexibles. At the heart of the survey were a series of detailed questions on how the panel had implemented their chosen application, in terms of planning, operational integration
and marketing. We separated their scores into two groups – those scoring poorly (‘poor’) and those scoring well (‘good’) and compared the level of investment made, the additional annual revenue and the additional annual profit achieved. At application level, market level and total sample level, the picture was absolutely clear – those that carry out detailed planning, integrate applications effectively, and market well, will spend more but get better net results. On average across all three parameters (planning, integration and marketing) those adopting good management practices invested an additional $70,235 but gained an additional $175,623 of annual turnover and enjoyed an additional $63,330 of annual profit. What is more the result is statistically significant to a high degree (p<0.0001 for the full sample). That is not to say the results were the same for all applications and markets, simply that the overwhelming majority supported that hypothesis. One example of these variations was in the packaging market where the gains were less overall and in some cases were in reverse i.e. those who spent more on integration got a poorer net profit. We believe this is clear evidence that making new applications take off in the packaging market is more challenging for structural reasons than in other markets. The question is whether those that have tried to date will reap the benefit of experience as the new applications finally get significant market traction. Drupa 2016 will be a key milestone on the transition to digital packaging formats. What is undeniable is that there is overwhelming evidence that those tackling print applications more professionally in terms of planning, integration and marketing are on average investing more but getting proportionately more back by way of additional revenue and profit. Suppliers and printers must make clear investment decisions on print applications that they intend to offer/purchase, and then implement them with effective planning, operational

integration and marketing, if they are to be rewarded with good growth and profitability. Demand for print per head will decline over time amongst the largely static population in developed countries, but in developing countries the underlying growth in both population and prosperity will ensure that absolute print volumes will grow for years to come. However the demand for print will be pinned back worldwide by the growth of digital communications and mobile in particular. The same technologies that are doing this are also creating fresh opportunities for emerging print applications to offer new and innovative growth opportunities. Print is still a manufacturing industry at its heart and to be successful in manufacturing in the digital age requires a radical fresh outlook at the entire way that products and services are developed, promoted, produced and delivered. It is the second of a series of reports that study strategic shifts in the international print and media sector at both global and regional level and follows the publication in October 2014 of ‘The Impact of the Internet on Print – The Digital Flood’. Published in parallel are the ‘drupa Global Trends’ reports, annual publications that track key economic and market developments in the global print industry over the period leading to drupa 2016 and beyond – the last of which was published in February 2014. Messe Düsseldorf, in its role as drupa organizer, appointed two independent consulting and market research companies - Printfuture (UK) and Wissler & Partner (Switzerland) to conduct these two report series. A total of 741 senior decision makers answered the extensive questionnaire with a good cross-section across markets and regions. Of particular interest were the 170 participants who took the trouble to offer personal experience of implementing applications in their own companies.
“Cradle to Grave Protection” with XCP Press Protection now available in India XCP (Xtra Corrosion Protection) – the globally recognized brand of Press Protection products is now available in India. In an interview with WAN IFRA, Mr.Scott Sutherland, MD said “XCP Press Protection products have been specially developed for the printing industry. Throughout the development of the product, we worked with OEM’s, employed printing industry standards and test methods, and importantly specifically looked at ALL the surfaces found on a modern day printing press. XCP is used by many of the biggest printers worldwide. The product is recommended by manroland and complies with all other relevant OEM recommendations (WIFAG, etc.) Kuruvilla Abraham of 3N Vision – the Market Development partner for XCP product range for the sub-continent – introduced XCP as a supplier of products of unmatched quality for protection from corrosion. XCP Press Protection products are tested and approved as per FOGRA standards; and endorsed by leading German manufacturers like MAN Roland for both web and sheet fed machines; and Heidelberg, Abraham emphasised. The products are thus designed for “Cradle to Grave Protection” of any printing machine. Arguably, printing machines are the most valuable assets of a printer and therefore protecting them from corrosion is a necessity than an option. Printers can trust something that has been developed especially for their application, i.e. relevant surface protection, drying speeds that do not impact under-packing foil adhesion strength, etc. Furthermore, if used as part of regular press maintenance it has also been found that areas treated with XCP become easier to clean due to the soft coating laid down on the surface of the metal. There are many generic corrosion ‘oils’ available on the wider market, but these have not been developed with the printing press in mind, i.e. some may be hazardous, contain high levels of VOC, are not easy to work with or don’t provide protection across the surfaces found on a presses. XCP Press Guard is a simple to use high performance printing cylinder protection.
Every time the cylinder surface is cleaned (during replacement of a blanket or plate), application of XCP Press Guard is recommended. XCP Press Guard can be applied using a standard trigger spray bottle and buffed down with a clean cloth as shown below. XCP Bearer Ring Oil is a specialty lubricant that ensures supreme lubrication for smooth running of bearer contact points without friction wear and corrosion. This MAN Roland approved product can simply replace the bearer lubrication oil on any bearer contact press to ensure life-long benefits. The XCP ONE is a high performance multipurpose spray designed to penetrate as well as clean and protect against corrosion. The product is ideal for cleaning the plate clamping devices of web presses. XCP ONE delivers maximum performance across a wide range of applications and can be used on nuts, bolts, screws, valves, chains, bearings, levers, locks, hinges, cables and many more. XCP Lubricate & Protect is dedicated to the art of lubrication. This high performance spray delivers long lasting protection against friction, wear and corrosion. A powerful blend of mineral and bio-based ingredients, it is designed to deliver maximum performance in a wide range of applications, including high pressure and motion. Use it on joints, bearings, cables, slide mechanisms, gears, locks, winches, hydraulics, power tools and many more. XCP Rust Preventer (RB32) is a powerful rust prevention spray. It creates a long lasting protective barrier to protect any steel, metal or alloy surfaces against the effects if rust and corrosion. Use it on exposed aluminium and ferrous surfaces, suspension units, box sections, chrome, chains, motors, shafts as well as tools and equipment. In addition, XCP Rust Blocker provides excellent protection against ‘galvanic corrosion’. The full range of XCP products is made available through Nulith Graphic – the Mumbai based importing and distributing partner of 3N Vision and XCPTM.

“Simply Smart” by Heidelberg at drupa 2016 At drupa 2016, Heidelberg exhibits the digitized future of the print media industry.
At its booth in Hall 1, Heidelberg and its partners will be exhibiting integrated business models for commercial and packaging printing under the motto “Simply Smart”. During the drupa 2016 trade fair (Düsseldorf, May 31 to June 10, 2016), Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) will be exhibiting the digitized future of the print media industry under the motto “Simply Smart”. At its heart, this topic is about the pressing need for print shops to continuously improve their efficiency and respond to the global demands of end customers in ever faster and more flexible ways. To meet this need, print shops must determine how their business model can be digitized and involve their customers in this process. The highly flexible production of a growing number of personalized print products is, in itself, becoming a standard process. In the future, print shops will be embedded even more deeply into a digital supply chain with customers and suppliers, and will have to meet even greater expectations regarding additional services such as shipping and multimedia marketing.
Collaborations combine expertise and accelerate development – Heidelberg joins with partners at drupa to exhibit pioneering solutions in Düsseldorf and Wiesloch-Walldorf.
Key Notes : > “Smart print shop” shows the integrated and networked print shop. > “Smart services” boost availability and productivity. > “Smart collaboration” stands for innovative approaches to cooperation.

“Presented under the motto “Simply Smart”, the Heidelberg exhibits at drupa will showcase the digitized and industrially organized print shop as an essential element for successful business models in the future. Working with our partners, we want to offer futureproof products and services that help our customers to be successful,” says Harald Weimer, Member of the Management Board, responsible for Heidelberg Services. “We believe that the integrated and networked print shop represents a trailblazing step for companies in our industry that want to move their businesses forward. By supplying automated processes and services, we are helping our customers to meet the demands that competitive print media production will face in the future.”

print shop. The Prinect print and media workflow from Heidelberg forms the basis for integrated communication between systems and machinery. It focuses on the smart integration of offset and digital printing, additional automation of all production processes, integration of commercial processes, and the inclusion of print buyers in the workflow. Through Prinect, Heidelberg also gives its customers the opportunity to run offset and digital technologies in parallel, based on a user-friendly and integrated process. What’s more, the company is continuously expanding its digital printing portfolio. As part of its ongoing work in this area, Heidelberg and Fujifilm will be exhibiting a joint development at drupa in the form of a new, highly productive inkjet-based digital printing system for industrial commercial and packaging printing. “Prinect is the basis for integrated communication inside the print shop and between the print shop and their customers and suppliers,” says Stephan Plenz, Member of the Management Board, responsible for
The “Simply Smart” theme is the company’s response to the challenges associated with Print Media Industry 4.0. Heidelberg is offering specific benefits and making it as easy as possible to work with increasingly complex processes and technologies.

platform for software, services, and consumables. Through Performance Benchmark, Heidelberg gives its customers access to a database of performance data that they can use to compare themselves anonymously against other print shops and draw important conclusions regarding their performance and efficiency. Since it has access to machine and pressroom performance data, Heidelberg can use Performance Plus to offer customers specific proposals for how to improve performance and can provide a solution package comprising hardware, software, and training that is tailored to the customer’s situation.
“Smart print shop” shows the integrated and networked print shop.
Heidelberg Equipment. This integration is supported, for example, by the new Prinect Portal, which makes communication between print shops and customers much easier and more transparent; by the new Prinect Web Shop, which offers print shops an easy route into online trading; and by the Prinect digital front end, which can be used to integrate digital printing systems into the overall workflow of a print shop. “That is how we are helping make the digitized and networked print shop a reality.” What that means is that, in the “smart print shop” of the future, the production process will be automated and cost-optimized and machines will take care of setup processes themselves, as they will be able to access production-relevant data from upstream. However, management is also integrated for monitoring business processes, providing print shops the ability to give their customers direct access to production processes.
“Smart services” boost availability and productivity Service offerings and consumables – or “smart services” – from Heidelberg safeguard the smooth running of a print shop round the clock. Since print shops have open interfaces due to Prinect and the various Remote Service packages, there are specific advantages in both day-to-day print production and in terms of services. Using eCall, a press can automatically make contact with the service team at Heidelberg
when a fault occurs. Thanks to Remote Service, service engineers can log into the customer’s systems through the open interface architecture and provide targeted support fast. Remote Monitoring, meanwhile, ensures that machinery notifies the service team of a problem before it causes a machine stoppage, so that parts can be replaced in good time during a scheduled service, for example. Most importantly, reliable and efficient print production also depends on tested consumables that are suitable for the relevant application. And this is where customers can choose from the fully comprehensive range of Heidelberg Saphira consumables, which include the Saphira Eco product line for environmentally friendly print production, a specific offering for LE UV printing, Saphira Low Migration products for food packaging, and consumables geared for use with Speedmaster Anicolor presses.
“Smart collaboration” stands for innovative approaches to cooperation New digital approaches are also being developed as part of the collaboration between Heidelberg and its customers. The first example is the use of e-commerce – among other things through the new Heidelberg Online Shop. In a further step, customers will be able to log into the Heidelberg website to obtain a detailed breakdown of how their machines are performing. This will create a new sales
Collaborations combine expertise and accelerate development – Heidelberg joins with partners at drupa to exhibit pioneering solutions in Düsseldorf and Wiesloch-Walldorf First and foremost, Heidelberg is building on its collaborations. In terms of digital solutions for the printing industry, Heidelberg is widening its range of offerings with cooperation partners Ricoh and Fujifilm, so as to meet customer requirements with added efficiency and speed. The company is combining its expertise with that of its partners to create one integrated system. The same applies to postpress partnerships with Masterworks and Polar that are designed to tap into more market segments. During the drupa trade fair, Heidelberg will be offering its customers a comprehensive overview of the digitized future of the printing industry both in Hall 1 in Düsseldorf and at the Print Media Centers at the Wiesloch-Walldorf site. At its booth in Hall 1, Heidelberg and its partners will be exhibiting integrated business models for commercial and packaging printing under the motto “Simply Smart”. The focus will be on pioneering innovations for offset and digital printing, prepress, finishing, the workflow, and the associated services and consumables. The trade fair activities in Wiesloch-Walldorf, meanwhile, will center on the broad Heidelberg portfolio. They are aimed primarily at customers who want to find out about the latest innovations, but also have varied needs in terms of productivity, automation, and capacity requirements.

and gave participants an insight into the marketing measures of the printer. “Based on the findings of the market study presented at the 10th Cortina Workshop, we contacted advertising agencies directly with Cortina products.” She felt that this, and the relaunch
of the printer’s website, helped to really increase public awareness of the products. The improved Internet presence also acted as a great contact point for customers. “We also publish the magazine ‘Cortissimo’ twice a year, printed on the Cortina,” says Lümmer. The product is sent to agency customers and aims to increase acceptance of the product and attract attention. “By optimizing machine technology and materials, we are creating a market with the waterless Cortina printer. But in the end it is the products that have to win over the customers.” “This time the agenda at the Workshop was again extremely comprehensive and varied,” says Markus Gnass, Head of Metal Back Blankets at ContiTech Elastomer Coatings.
“It was an extremely successful event, and all participants agreed: we need to continue to make progress in this field.” The next KBA Cortina Workshop is planned for September 21 and 22, 2016. The location will be the Nordsee printing center of Nordsee Zeitung in Bremerhaven, Germany.
Q.I. Press Controls’ mRC-3D for new TKS in India Mathrubhumi Printing & Publishing is one of the largest newspaper publishers in the Indian state of Kerala. One of its fourteen printing plants, in Calicut, has three Japanese TKS printing presses. Recently, the organisation decided to expand its production facilities with a fourth new TKS. Through effective communication with the customer, the printing press manufacturer and various agencies, Q.I. Press Controls was able to present Mathrubhumi and TKS with a convincing argument for the mRC3D colour register. The result: Mathrubhumi asked TKS to have the new printing press fitted with the Q.I. Press Controls’ system. Seeing as this was the first time Q.I. Press Controls has worked together with Mathrubhumi and TKS, the organisation is hopeful of a successful partnership. Q.I. Press Controls came into contact with Mathrubhumi and TKS almost at the same time. In India, Q.I. Press Controls and its local agent Krause Biagosch India had been constantly seeking new leads at Mathrubhumi. During a visit to the plant in Calicut, Vijay Pandya, managing director of QIPC – EAE India, gave a presentation in which he demonstrated that Mathrubhumi would be able to work more efficiently and effectively using the mRC-3D. It wasn’t completely by chance that Mathrubhumi was looking to buy a new printing press at the time.
time been pursuing new leads at TKS. At the very moment Mathrubhumi opted for the new TKS press, contacts between Q.I. Press Controls and TKS were so well entrenched thanks to the hard work of Krause Biagosch that TKS consented to Mathrubhumi’s request to install the TKS with Q.I. Press Controls’ colour register. Thanks to the excellent working partnership, twelve mRC-3D cameras for colour register were installed on the new TKS printing presses with six towers and two folders. The cameras are fitted with Automatic Ink Mist Shields (AIMS). According to Mathrubhumi, the organisation plumped for Q.I. Press Controls because of its local support and service, the wellestablished relationship and the possibility of having the system upgraded. The mRC-3D brings about significant savings in waste and
offers a fully flexible system. Mathrubhumi has expressed an interest in various optional extras, such as cut-off control, and at a later stage plans to invest in the IDS-3D colour control. Vijay Pandya is optimistic the order will mark the beginning of a long-term partnership. He believes that, when Krause Biagosch India continues its hard work, the three already existing TKS printing presses will also be equipped with Q.I. Press Controls in the future. His conclusion: “Once again, the name of Q.I. Press Controls has become associated with one of the leading printing companies in India. It gives us a great sense of pride.” Mathrubhumi publishes the Mathrubhumi Daily and ten different magazines in the Malayalam language. Mathrubhumi manages fourteen of its own printing plants spread across Kerala, the rest of India and Dubai, each of them using the best available printing technologies.

Xerox: A showcase of five high-technology products at Pamex 2015 Launches Versant 2100 and Versant 80 with banner printing option and FreeFlow Core workflow; showcases Color 1000i Press and Color C70. Xerox India launched banner printing option in Versant 2100 and Versant 80 at Pamex 2015. “It is the first time we are showcasing five different products – four hardware products and one software solution,” says Mr. Balaji Rajagopalan, Executive Director, Technology, Channels & International Distributor Operations, Xerox India. Other devices showcased were the Colour 1000i Press with option for seven colours including Gold, Silver and Clear options and Xerox Colour C70. The company also showcased for the first time in India its FreeFlow Core workflow solution. “We believe the banner printing capabilities in the Versant 2100 and Versant 80 will further add a lot of value to our customers,” says Balaji. This feature was well appreciated by customers and print providers at the event. The remarkable banner printing capabilities of Versant 2100 and Versant 80 open new avenues for digital printers. This is the first time that such option has been introduced in this size. This makes the Versant machines highly profitable options for printers who don’t want to invest in big machines like iGen. The machines are highly power efficient and consume from 40 to 50 percent less power thus saving huge costs in day-today operations. The advanced technology enables the machine to emit low heat and thus also save on air-conditioning costs. “Apart from being a versatile new opportunity for printers looking for a machine in this size, the machine has a compact footprint, saves operating costs, a lot of in-line options and automation features,” says Balaji.
experience. Giving details about the Freeflow Core workflow solutions he says, “Its automation toolset will remove costly manual prepress steps, reducing your costs and reducing the time it takes to get jobs through your shop. It will enable customers to free up resources from repetitive tasks and move them to higher value jobs.” Xerox FreeFlow Core Workflow automates the process steps required to prepare a job for print. Though a prepress software that is both an in-line as well as offline workflow, it automates a lot of processes. Being a software developed by Xerox, it includes Advanced Prepress and Advanced Automation. It automatically processes and prints jobs and does intelligent job management including that for optimal post-press processing. “The software can automate can bring productivity benefits through process automation to the extent of 500 percent over manual processes,” says Balaji. Xerox has also launched iGen5. The seven colour production machine features blue, green and orange in addition to the regular four colours. “It has the highest level of colour gamut – with option for a 5th colour – orange, green, or blue dry ink, it dramatically increases printers’ ability to match a wider variety of PANTONE® colours and achieve brand consistency with no impact on productivity,” says Balaji. He further added, “We received a great response at Pamex this year and had the privilege of meeting over 1000 customers
and prospects on-ground. All the devices showcased were launched this year and they have performed exceptionally well in the market.” Xerox has already installed more than 100 units of C60/70 alone in 2015 and is in the process of closing some deals soon. Customers, partners and print providers were excited to see the Colour Press 1000i and its exciting features. “This device is the first in the industry to offer Pantone Metallic Gold or Silver dry ink at rated speed in addition to Clear Dry Ink which enables highlighting specific areas and also gives a raised impact with up to 7 layers.” This opens the door for new revenues by migrating lucrative foil stamping applications, such as invitations, certificates and business cards, to short-run, high-value digital production. Multi-pass printing with these specialty dry inks adds an extra textural/dimensional feel and “pop” to documents for attention grabbing effects on a wide range of applications. Also present at the event was Raju GVSR, newly appointed Associate Director & Head, Production Systems Group at Xerox India. He said, “PAMEX 2015 was a huge success for us. We showcased our key digital presses launched this year and we were happy to see the excitement showcased across partners to customers. Xerox has always been strong in the digital printing segment and has devices to cater to almost all categories of digital printing. With this strength, we gear up for 2016 with some more exciting product launches for the digital printing market.”
“The machines have been developed in close association with customers. These products are specifically designed for the Indian market. Since a significant number of the customers is walk-in customers, the need for fast changeover and makeready has been specially taken care of in these machines,” he adds. The machines do away with complex manual matching of profile and variables like substrates for different jobs thanks to the new automation features which make the machines’ operation a pleasant

EFI sees a bigger role for the Asia Pacific region, says Stephan Green. The company aims to transform the print industry from analogue to digital printing, add value and boost productivity.
EFI, according to Samir is about value creation and innovation. “We understand the need of the market first then through detailed interaction we create value for our customers,” he says. “It hardly matters for how long a business is in existence. One has to constantly strive for faster, better and cheaper solutions at the same time create value for one’s customers,” adds Samir.
EFI has been making big investment in its businesses in India. At Pamex, it aimed to educate its customers about EFI and its recent investments apart from the showcased solutions. With the acquisition of Reggiani and adding of Matan this year, EFI has entered newer avenues of signage industry. Similarly, Vutek and Fiery have shown tremendous growth for EFI. “As compared to other Asian markets, India holds good promise. With the new government in place, the market is responding very positively. We see a lot of growth opportunities in India,” says Stephan.
He says that providing solutions after identifying the actual need of the customer is more important than the solution. “Innovation is not always creating something new but it is creative way of solving problems,” he says.

Ricoh India eyes top market position Sambit Misra of Ricoh India found the Mumbai edition of Pamex show a welcome gesture on the part of the organizers. His experience of the previous Pamex edition was good and he considers this one as even better. He found continuous flow of visitors throughout the show. “West is the biggest market for Ricoh though South has been early adopters of technology,” says Sambit. Western region has big volumes of print business, he admits. He found the response at Pamex 2015 good and happened to meet many existing and future customers. Ricoh India, also sponsoring the NAEP (National Awards for Excellence in Printing) Awards at Pamex showcased its entire range of products including the new Pro C 9100 series and Pro C 7100x and the newly launched Ricoh Latex printers.
Photo Printing market. Sambit says that the Photo Printing market is the entrylevel market. Since Ricoh has been into continuous feed high-volume printing, it kept its focus there. Now, the changing market needs have shifted the company’s focus to other markets also. Ricoh has tied up with new partners including some of the best paper companies. “We have observed that intense competition in the high-coverage (toner) Photo Printing market has kept this business less profitable. However, we at Ricoh, always look at Digital Printing market as a mix of diverse Print jobs ranging from very-low toner coverage prints to very-high toner coverage jobs. It not only keeps the business profitable for customers but also helps develop a healthy market,” he explains.
He cites it as the main reason that there is huge deficit of right machines in the market. “Ricoh will be trying to fill this gap. We today have technology to print on Offset photo stock. However, since the expected selling price of prints is very low and the expected price of equipment and technology is very high, it is hard for customers to enter the market,” he asserts. Ricoh has big plans for India. “We have the best solutions in the Industry yet we have been playing as underdog. By the end of 2016, we expect to reach the top position,” says Sambit. “With the decline in business in China, Ricoh Japan has decided to concentrate more on the Indian market, which has greater role to play in the whole of Asia-Pacific region,” he adds.
Ricoh showcased application zones for continuous feed printing, question paper printing and bill printing etc. It also showcased Print on Demand printing of books and Latex printing technology. AIFMP and Ricoh have been presenting the NAEP Awards for last several years now. The prestigious printing awards of the printing industry encourage innovation and creativity in printing technology. There is also a general feeling in the market that Ricoh hasn’t been focusing the popular

Flint Group to start international quality Blanket Barring facility in India “Moreover having end-to-end products in a workflow helps in standardization and optimization of processes. Whether it is chemistry, blankets or inks, all have to work together to have optimized results. We have got all the solutions needed to create a perfect synergy between inks, plates and chemistry which only few others can offer,” says Upal.
Flint Inks entered the Indian market in a joint venture with Incowax in which it acquired 100 percent shares later. Upal Roy is the Managing Director at Flint Group. We happened to have a brief chat with him at the recent Pamex 2015 in Mumbai. Today Flint has four plants – two in Baroda, one in Noida and one in Hosur. Flint’s two business units in India serve the packaging and narrow label web industry, and the print media industry. Print media globally is shrinking but India is one of the few markets that are growing. Flint has been investing in Indian market to tap the
growth. It is adding capacity in News Inks. Another important development is having their Blanket Barring facility in India. “It will be first by any blanket manufacturer in India. It will greatly benefit our customers in India. They will not only have international quality barred blankets locally available but also save a lot of money and time,” says Upal. On the packaging side, they are setting up a non-toluene non-ketone inks facility in Baroda. “In India the use of toluene is regular, but in Europe the non-toluene inks are the next human friendly products. It will certainly present a product line of future to Indian customers,” adds Upal.
With the recent acquisition of Xeikon by Flint Group, it will be using Xeikon’s products and services forming the foundation of a newly created division to be called Digital Printing Solutions. This new division of Flint Group is aimed to further broaden the group’s conventional and digital printing solutions, offering a unique proposition of equipment, consumables and services across its global markets. Flint Group India showcased its wide range of pressroom supplies at Pamex 2015. It focused on its newspaper and sheetfed product innovations and showcased among other products, its offset inks range, blanket solutions and chemical developments. It launched Varn Newsline 435 NT, 435 Turbo, dayGraphica 8894 and 8897 for newspaper presses.

FujiFilm shows commitment towards Indian Printing market The year has been good for FujiFilm India. “We have lot of opportunities ahead and we have the right technology for all the segment of printing viz. commercial, packaging, newspaper, signage and other graphic arts segments,” says Ram Prasad, FujiFilm India. “We are a 25 billion USD global company with a turnover of nearly 200 lakh crores. The parent company has been putting great focus on the Indian market. The focus has brought products keeping in mind the specific needs of the Indian market.” Besides, FujiFilm puts special emphasis on environmental aspects of processes. Our key focus has been to present solutions as environmentally responsible player. “Lots of chemicals are used in the printing industry. We, being one of the leading players of the industry, have to lead from ahead the march of environmental friendly products. Our process-less plates as well as the water washable plates (for packaging segment) are just the right products in this direction,” says Ram Prasad. “Another key product,” says Ram Prasad, “is our recently introduced Thermal setter. The product gives more control to the printers. It is a quality enabler for printers who outsource their plates. Printers who have invested crores can now have full control on their quality by investing just a few lakhs. It not
only brings a cost effective platemaking solution but also ensures quality. Moreover, it simplifies the process – by using a processless plate in the low cost thermal platesetter which reduces process, chemicals and water etc.” According to him, over the years creativity is lacking in general printing particularly solvent printing. UV answers this creativity dearth – it brings innovation into printing and makes prints stand out. Today anything and everything can be printed using UV. “We have products from entry-level for people who need them for testing and sampling to highlevel industrial production on UV platform,” he says. FujiFilm has a wide range of consumables for different segments of the industry. In UV range, it provides UV technology, equipments, substrates, materials as well as inks etc. The wide range covers from entry-level to industrial production. FujiFilm is planning new products and concepts for launch and showcase at upcoming drupa. “The products will be in all the three key
areas – printing, digital and packaging,” says Ram Prasad. FujiFilm has built its Demo Centre for its customers in India. The Demo Centre is located in Mumbai. “Most of the competitive demo centres are located outside India. These centres don’t provide much of a help for domestic customers. Our Demo Centre will greatly help customers to have hands on experience of our wide range of solutions,” says Ram Prasad. “Now, customers can have live experience of all equipment including high-end ones for which they had to go to Europe and other overseas locations. This shows our commitment towards Indian customers as well as market,” he adds.

HP and KBA present world’s most productive inkjet web press HP PageWide Web Press T1100S: Pre-print and digital printing in one machine. HP and KBA have jointly presented the world’s first HP PageWide Web Press T1100S on 2 and 3 December to almost 200 international packaging printers and trade journalists at the KBA headquarters in Würzburg, Germany. The gigantic inkjet web press with a web width of 2.80m (110in) was developed in under two years by HP Inc. and KBA-Digital & Web Solutions in close cooperation. It opens up new opportunities in terms of the flexible production of corrugated packaging in various formats and run sizes with digital pre-print liners.
HP T1100S delivers significantly higher productivity and production flexibility than traditional analogue technology especially when it comes to small and mid-sized runs, and thanks to its high level of productivity of over 30,000m² printed per hour it can also be implemented economically for large runs.
Digital printing is the fastest growing process in packaging with a projected annual growth rate of 17 per cent and is expected to be worth $19 billion by 2019. Digital packaging solutions now also enable cost-effective short-runs and unlock the ability to make every box different.
DS Smith Packaging is the first customer to install the HP T1100S. It delivers significantly higher productivity and production flexibility than traditional analogue technology especially when it comes to small and mid-sized runs, and thanks to its high level of productivity of over 30,000m² printed per hour it can also be implemented economically for large runs. “We selected the new HP PageWide Web Press T1100S as the next step in our ground-breaking digital PrePrint programme,” said Stefano Rossi, CEO, DS Smith Packaging Division. “Our codevelopment with HP has resulted in the first digital machine able to print at the speed and width we need for high-volume corrugated production. It will provide our customers with unprecedented short-run flexibility and quality consistency.”
Reinventing corrugated printing “Converters and brands alike need to create more targeted, effective packaging while reducing costs,” said Eric Wiesner, general manager, PageWide Web Press (PWP) division, HP Inc. “HP Inc. and KBA have combined forces to bring the world’s most productive press to market, offering more value to high-end converters with the efficiencies of pre-print and digital in one press.”
While current analogue printing technology prints multiple copies of one box design in a more or less large number and all of the boxes look the same and are the same size, the HP PageWide Web Press T1100S, with Multi-lane Print Architecture (MLPA), creates an immense paradigm shift in the production of corrugated board.

Like a highway, HP MLPA splits the web into multiple print “lanes” during production enabling different jobs, with different box sizes and run lengths, to be printed next to each other simultaneously. Multiple ultrashort or short runs in varying formats can be queued and printed together, with no makeready or press stops in between jobs, while a long run is printed in another lane.
printed solutions at lower costs. Printing at speeds up to 183m (600ft) per minute and a printed area of 30,600m² (330,000ft²) per hour, the HP PageWide Web Press T1100S helps packaging manufacturers quickly take on new, complex jobs at speed.
Fast, high-quality production
With enhanced priming options, including a combination of HP Bonding Agent, HP Priming Agent and four-colour HP A50 aqueous pigmented CMYK inks, customers can print in a high quality on standard uncoated and coated liners from 80-400 g/m² (GSM). The inkjet web press delivers greater cost savings, versatility, productivity and quality with high colour saturation, dark black optical density and crisp text. In-line and near-line coating solutions for HP Priming Agent and aqueous overprint varnishing also help optimise print quality.

Xerox on tech predictions 2016 Optimized document workflow through Xerox Document Management Services. information capture, streamlined by removing time-consuming steps, and even rendered obsolete when replaced with a new, simpler way of doing things (e.g., mobile eForms capability).
As businesses become increasingly reliant on IT to deliver products and services and to interact with their stakeholders, a simple, reliable, responsive and secure document management becomes essential to an enterprise. Organizations today are adopting document management solutions at a rapid rate to increase productivity and efficiency, differentiate competitively and enhance customer experience. With IT trends like cloud computing, big data and mobility leading to a rise in demand for more refined document management, new age challenges and businesses demand require new age IT solutions. “In the coming years, we will witness trends catching up as organizations will want to synergize effectiveness and efficiency of support services across the company by applying multiple service delivery models including elements of shared services, outsourcing, off-shoring and IT solutions,” says Sushant Dwivedi, Director, Global Document Outsourcing, Xerox India.
This trend is likely to be ushered by efficient Workflow Automation that aims at helping unite personal and business workflows, increasing knowledge worker efficiency, and structured business process effectiveness. Xerox is constantly educating enterprises and making them realize the productivity enhancement through optimized document workflow possible through Xerox Document Management Services. The managed print services market on the other hand continues to gain momentum as enterprises seek to tackle escalating print costs and drive greater business efficiency. Print and document output is really the last unmanaged frontier when it comes to optimizing IT infrastructure. This, combined with trends that are affecting the overall print market (mobility, digitization, enhanced integration of documents with work-flows, analytics, cloud services, etc.) are changing customer buying behaviour. The market is relatively buoyant with 51% of the organisations (either already using or planning to use MPS) indicating they plan to increase expenditure on MPS over the next year. With, more and more customers moving
to an Op-Ex led managed print services, thereby reaping the benefits of lower costs, enhanced productivity, mobile/cloud printing, user-based accounting and security features, effective print governance via SLA assurance and single point of accountability. For the next few years, some of the emerging trends will be increasing integration of workprocesses and workflows in organisation. Xerox managed print services offers a comprehensive assessment of a company’s current fleet of multi-vendor copiers, printers and other hardware and then creates a print environment that best meets the needs of the workplace. Xerox NextGen MPS aims to help companies in using their information more effectively, and not only helps them print for less but also helps them print less. The solution is designed to build momentum and deliver new value that help customers of all sizes realize cost savings up to 30% with increase in efficiencies. “While complexities of technology continue to increase with the evolution of technology, we have been fairly successful developing mutually complementary solutions that not only address various technological needs but also in turn generate new opportunities. The digital transformation of industrial printing A growing desire for mass-customization creates a fertile ground for innovative digital printing technologies. Since ancient times, people around the world have been looking to beautify their environment and enrich their lives using decorations. They have used decorative glyphs, paintings, and written words in monochrome and colour to reflect their lifestyles and to communicate functional messages (e.g., a green light means go!). Innovators on worldwide basis always seek solutions for the deposition of decorative and functional materials on everyday objects and surfaces. Some of these designs were intended to convey information, while others created a striking visual effect or enhanced functionality. First came early block printing on paper and textiles, and then the game-changing invention of Gutenberg’s printing press with movable type in 1440.
During the drupa 2016 event in Dusseldorf, Germany, the world will converge to explore and observe new technological innovations in print and material deposition. Many of these will certainly take aim at industrial and functional printing solutions.
Key Notes : > Industrial printing - a technology used for enriching the decorative elements in everyday surfaces. > The transition from mass-production to mass-customization – digitally printed output enabling masscustomization. > The printing technology spans a broad range of industries – graphic communication, packaging, decorative, and functional printing.

Our desire to increasingly customize our surroundings coupled with relentless innovations in materials science and digital material deposition technology is a major driving force in the transition from mass-production to mass-customization. This transition enables consumers as well as institutional buyers to customize their environments with branded imagery, or with decorative surfaces that reflect their tastes and visual sensibilities. Digitally printed output is now increasingly used to enable mass-customization while also providing a range of other benefits, including operational efficiency in manufacturing and a positive environmental impact.

as textiles, ceramics, flooring, laminates, glass, wood, membrane switches, printed electronics, packaging, and even some biomedical materials.
The impact of mass customization The driving force behind these developments was the need to mass-produce printed items like books or packaged consumer goods from leading industry brands. Items such as fashion fabrics, decorated laminates, ceramic tiles, and product packaging became available to consumers with the help of mass production processes and technologies. Although mass production reduces unit price, it requires a large investment in manufacturing capacity as well as a suitable supply chain to manage the inflow and outflow of materials and goods. According to InfoTrends’ estimates, worldwide mass-production of decorative products accounted for just under half a trillion dollars in manufactured goods in flat glass, ceramic tiles, flooring/laminates, textile, and wallcoverings.
that have effectively transformed industry dynamics to enable mass-customization of graphic arts products using inkjet technology. These changes are quickly expanding into industrial manufacturing as well. At their core, these inkjet solutions enable manufacturers to produce quality products while benefiting from the operational advantages of digital print. As important as operational efficiency may be, it is only one of the ingredients that is driving market growth. The ability to costeffectively manufacture products in short runs is democratizing the creative process. In a market where printing requires less make-ready and inventories are significantly reduced, brand owners and designers are now free to explore new products, materials, and manufacturing technologies that do not require as high an investment as massproduced products. Fueled by the Internet, these products generate demand for a range of applications that were previously unavailable to consumers and businesses. Compounded with the operational benefits, these market-driven opportunities can spell profitable growth for companies of all sizes.
The industry landscape
Over a generation ago, digital printing emerged with a range of technologies that ushered in new integrated production processes as well as the ability to customize or personalize products. Although promising, early innovations were often expensive and did not yield acceptable quality for endusers. One of the leading technologies in this space was inkjet printing. For many years, inkjet printing technologies like drop-ondemand and continuous inkjet struggled to gain acceptance due to high costs, reliability issues, and a limited range of available materials (e.g., inks and substrates). These factors hampered the range of applications that could be produced.
The printing technology spans a broad range of industries including graphic communication, packaging, decorative, and functional printing. A common element to all of these industry segments is the need to precisely deposit a range of materials such as ink binders and functional materials. These are deposited on a variety of surfaces from sheets of paper to 3D printed objects. Core technologies typically migrate to adjacent markets; for example, a technology that was initially adopted by one segment will find its way into a related segment and will later be modified based on the new segment’s specific needs. Although the digital revolution has taken several paths, the most prominent to date has been in the graphic communications market. Digital print-on-demand is now well-established in this area, with over 1 billion A4 impressions produced annually. The use of digital technology is now migrating and growing in industrial segments such as packaging, decorative, and functional printing.

examples to illuminate the solutions that are available in these industry segments.
Packaging Packaging is a massive industry, and InfoTrends’ industry assessments estimate that it accounted for over $400 billion in related revenues on a global basis in 2014. Applications span from simple marked corrugated brown boxes to award-winning labels for premium products. Over the past few years, digital color technology has established a critical base of electrophotographic and inkjet solutions. These accounted for about 1 billion square meters in 2014 and are projected to reach 2 billion square meters in 2019, representing a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 23%. Thanks to a new generation of inkjet presses, this market is now reaching folding cartons, flexible packaging, direct-to-shape, and corrugated printing. These systems go beyond proofing into fully integrated production lines. Solutions that are targeted toward corrugated liner manufacturing or sheet fed printing of corrugated boxes/ displays are now available from key industry suppliers with print speeds exceeding 200 meters per minute. Direct-to-shape is another example of an emerging category where graphic arts, technologies, and industry-specific suppliers have come together to meet the demand for customized printing like never before. Examples include a major brand that is now

offering digitally printed beer bottles that are fully customized and linked to an augmented reality campaign. This isn’t a completely new concept, except that it is now being done on an industrial scale by a mainstream manufacturer.
Decorative printing Decorative printing is a vast market segment with a number of applications that are taking advantage of digital printing capabilities. The digital print volume in this segment is large and growing rapidly. Although many applications exist in this segment, this article will focus on ceramics, textiles, laminates & wood, wallcoverings, and glass, which are leading the digital transition.
Ceramics The market for ceramic tile is huge, with over 12 billion square meters of tilemanufactured worldwide in 2014 based on an InfoTile report. This industry segment traditionally used rotary presses to deposit decorative ceramic inks onto tiles ahead of the firing process, resulting in a cost-effective product that rivalled the permanency of natural stone. At the same time, however, using rotary print cylinders has its drawbacks—pattern repeats are limited and require costly changeovers. Because digital printing has dramatically improved time-to-market, enabled design changes, and reduced make-ready, it now captures the majority of tile manufacturing in Europe and is gaining a rapidly-growing share in China. Moreover, digital technology
Textile printing is a far-reaching industry with a deep-rooted heritage in countries like Italy, Turkey, India, Japan, Korea, and China. Based on InfoTrends’ Digital Textile Forecast, printed fabrics accounted for over 35 billion square meters in 2014—and 800 million of this volume was digital. Although most of these fabrics are produced using silk screens or rotary presses, the use of digital printers is rapidly increasing. This unique industry has been creating dazzling designs since woodcarved blocks were used to stamp fabrics. Great strides have been made since that time, and the prevailing technology for highvolume fabric manufacturing is now rotary screen printing. Now that specialty inks can be used with a wide range of manmade and natural fibers, it is possible to create costeffective finished products with bright colours and bold designs. The ever-increasing need for improved operational efficiency and the desire to provide consumers with cutting-edge designs was a key driver in themarket’s evolution. Since the early 1990s, inkjet technology vendors have attempted to make inkjet a suitable solution for fabric manufacturers. The past few years have seen a rapid growth in inkjet printing on fabric for organizations of all sizes. InfoTrends’ Digital Textile Forecast projects that digital textile fabric printing will demonstrate a CAGR of over 30%, surpassing 3.2 billion square meters by 2019. This rapid growth can be attributed to a reduction in make-ready, cost reductions in environmentally-friendly production, and the democratization of designs that enable brand owners to reach markets quickly and effectively.
Laminates & wood Within the construction and furniture industries, woodworking products have been making use of printed decorative papers and laminates for decades. With a wide range of designs that mimic natural wood grains, stone, and graphic patterns, laminates are a cost-effective substitute for natural materials. In some cases, laminates are actually preferred because they are more durable. Typically produced using gravure presses, decorative papers are converted to laminates using a range of processes.
pressideas/ plc
This industry produced over 300 million digital square meters in 2014, based on InfoTrends’ document entitled Profiting from Digital Printing in the Décor Marketplace. The pressure to develop short-run or custom laminates is driving an increased demand for mid-range as well as industrial products that rival the printing volumes of traditional gravure presses. Many leading providers of laminates and décor paper (e.g., Schattdecor, WilsonArt, and Formica) are now offering custom laminates based on end-users’ demands for increased levels of design freedom and customization. These trends follow many years of successful production of laminate flooring as well as a range of decorative trims for the construction industry. Emerging on the heels of laminate solutions are a range of direct printing solutions produced on a variety of wood products such as Medium Fiber Board (MDF), plywood, and natural wood. These do not require lamination and are used for adding a decorative surface to residential and commercial applications.
Wallcoverings Wallcoverings have been in existence since the ancient Chinese decorated their palace walls. More recently, King Louis XI of France ordered wallpaper for his royal dwellings in 1481. Creator Jean Bourdichonpainted 50 rolls of paper with angels on a blue background because King Louis found it necessary to move frequently from castle to castle. Wallcoverings have made great strides since that time, and they are now readily available to everyday residences and commercial buildings. Technologies such as surface printing, offset, flexography, and gravure printing have been widely used to produce standard wallpapers, with volumes estimated at 52 million square meters annually in 2014 based on InfoTrends’ Profiting from Digital Printing in the Décor Marketplace. Digital wide format printing solutions ushered in generations of innovative graphic communication solutions for the plethora of industries that have been migrating to the wallcovering segment. Advancements in digital printing inks (e.g., latex and flexible UV inks) now enable printing on standard industry media that complies with health and safety codes. Applications such as murals and graphically rich wallpaper rolls are
becoming increasingly common and are now available from a number of suppliers.
Glass Decorative glass has been adorning cathedrals, palaces, and a range of public and private buildings for millennia. Applications span from leaded stained glass to screen-printed glass panes, and these items have been used to reinforce branding, promote artistic expression, or create simple signage. According to the Global Flat Glass Industry Trend, Forecast, and Opportunity Analysis by Lucintel, the flat glass market is expected to surpass $66 billion by 2019 and is starting to adopt digital printing as a means of expanding its reach. With the development of inkjet printheads that are capable of printing ceramic inks onto glass, a number of industries are using digital printing technology to produce long-life decorated glass that is suitable for architectural and industrial uses.
Functional printing Another type of industrial printing is where the printed surface is deposited with material or ink to enable some functionality. These applications take advantage of piezoelectric or continuous drop devices to enable deposition of a variety of materials. Applications include membrane switches, printed electronics, 3D printing, and a range of new innovations in small particle sizes (e.g., nano-particulates) that are expanding into pharmaceutical and bio-medical
applications. This section will highlight some of the developments that enable membrane switch printing, printed electronics, and 3D printing. While there are a number of other very compelling deposition technologies, these are typically limited to specialty industry forums in the life sciences industry.
Membrane switches The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) defines a membrane switch as “a momentary switch device in which at least one contact is on, or made of, a flexible substrate.” These flexible substrates are typically printed on PET (Polyethylene terephthalate), which is used as a base carrier. They are very common within home appliances, medical devices, games, smartphones, and toys. Printing technologies are regularly used in the production of the graphic overlays as well as the some of the circuitry where conductive inks are used. Advancements in digital UV printing technology—including flexible inks and Light Emitting Diode (LED) curing—are expanding the range of membrane switch applications and carrier materials to include flexible substrates that can be cured with less energy and heat. In certain higher-volume applications, curing using EB (Electron Beam) technology enables deposition and curing on sensitive materials. In all of these cases, short-run of customized print can take the place of screen or flexographic printing technology.

deposited on the substrate to create active or passive devices, such as thin film transistors or resistors. Printed electronics are expected to be used in applications such as flexible displays, smart labels, decorative/animated posters, and active clothing. One example where digital technology is emerging as an alternative to more complex and costly implementation is the creation of OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) display components.
3D printing The 3D printing industry is a vast space with many different technologies, applications, materials, prices, and solutions. Current 3D print technologies include binder jetting, digital light processing, electron beam melting, fused filament fabrication, material jetting, selective deposition lamination, selective laser sintering, and stereolithography. All of these technologies have their pros and cons, and it is likely that this list will grow even longer over time as more vendors make their own contributions to this space. The market is delineated along three product categories: production, professional, and personal. Typical applications created on 3D printers include prototypes, molds & dyes, and enduse products. These applications are being
used by almost all industries to create a variety of products from nano-sized research products to airplane parts. This segment is evolving rapidly, and hardly a day passes when we don’t hear about a new innovation that enables another compelling application. The attraction in 3D printing is its additive nature—waste is limited, time-to-market is shortened, and custom designs are possible.
Printed electronics Printed electronics rely on traditional printing technologies to create electrical devices on various substrates. Electrical circuits have been printed using screen printing, flexography, gravure, and offset lithography for many years, and inkjet printing has been an option for quite some time too. During this process, electrically functional inks are
Digital display printing is at the forefront of innovation, but digital deposition of functional materials has been in development since the early 1990s and can now be found in applications including Radio Frequency ID (RFID) tags, smart textiles, and many more printed electronics. At the same time, however, conventional printing technologies such as flexography and photolithography are still in use in high-volume manufacturing of printed electronics. This provides numerous opportunities for growth in this industry for a range of specialty print providers.

New Board at FINAT’s Young Managers Club The Board of the FINAT Young Manager’s Club (YMC) has been hard at work planning special events for young managers in the label industry during 2016. The Board consists of three core members of the YMC: Dana Kilarska of Purgina, Slovakia, Chairman/Treasurer; Rainer Ulrich, of Ulrich Etiketten, Austria, Programme Management; and Christopher Jones of Alphasonics in the UK, Marketing. “Since my first YMC event in 2013, I have been really keen to beinvolved in a bigger way,” comments Jones, the newest YMC Board member.“What I found at that first meeting were like-minded people who share my passion for the label industry and its ongoing development. I’m looking forward to contributing to our industry in a positive way, flying the flag for young people in labels and packaging, and opening our wonderful group to more people.”
members of the group. “We’d like to thank the three outgoing board members who have contributed greatly to the group and our progress as a forum,” says YMC Chairman Dana Kilarska. “Our recent growth can be attributed to their dedication and energy. We are very much looking forward to working with Chris, who brings enthusiasm and passion to the role and who I am sure will help drive us forward into the future in his role as our marketing guru.”
Looking ahead to Budapest
Keeping the label industry young and vital
The group made a conscious decision to reduce the number of board members, and the new board’s first meeting at Labelexpo Europe yielded enthusiastic and positive results. At the meeting, which was hosted by Delfort Group, the board agreed to the location and date of the next Young Manager’s Club event: the 3rd YMC Summit which will be held 28 to 30 April in Budapest, Hungary. The board will be communicating the seminar’s theme and full details soon, as well as posting them at www.finat.com.
Formed in 2008, FINAT’s YMC has met regularly in various locations across Europe with members who are both converters and suppliers actively working in the label industry. The group aims to highlight issues for young managerial talent and to share ideas and experiences for the advancement of these professionals, the businesses they represent and the industry at large.A popular forum, the YMC has seen increased attendance at every event and subsequent membership growth year overyear.
“We have found our hands-on approach to these events to be very well-received by our members,” Kilarska adds. “Our goal is to make 2016’s session better than ever and to work hard to attract even more attendees. Our members are young, eager to learn, and are selflessly working to advance the industry. These sessions are a key contributor to helping them do that through education and networking. The bar is already high, but we think we can raise it even further!”
Three members of the YMC board have stepped down due to the demands of other commitments. However, Pawandeep Sahni (Weldon Celloplast), Nicola Motetta (Euroadhesiv) and FrancescEgea (IPE) will continue to attend events and remain active
Previous YMC conferences were held in Vienna (2011), Berlin (2012), Warsaw (2013) and Bratislava (2015). The YMC also organised an exchange programme with Indian label manufacturers during Labelexpo India.

Esko Kongsberg enables L&E India provide customer service in ‘no time’ The new Esko Kongsberg V20 at L&E India has made it faster and more efficient than ever. For example, the turnover time has reduced from 4-5 days to an amazing 24 hours. L&E India is a packaging resource company that helps brand owners design and execute their packaging materials across the country. The parent company, L&E International is headquartered in New York. It is a leading global supplier of packaging and packaging related materials to the footwear, athletic, retail consumer product industries and various global brands. With offices and warehouses in Brazil, China, Czech Republic, Germany, India, Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam the company supplies hundreds of millions of boxes, retail displays and assorted printed and unprinted items each year to major brands all around the world.
Choosing a Kongsberg V CAD table The 50-year-old company started its operations in India in 2007. In 2014, L&E India, in collaboration with SP TechPac Solutions in Kundli, purchased an Esko Kongsberg V20 sample making table. “We did a lot of study and after discussing it with many of our printing partners who have the real experience, we got to know that Esko is the right company to go with as they also have a good name and support in the industry. So we went ahead and bought a brand new Esko Kongsberg V20, large format digital finishing system.” The sample making solution from Esko was a huge success. However, both companies quickly outgrew the arrangement and each needed an in-house sample maker of their
Series model V20 in September 2015 offering durability, precision and versatility along with the Esko ArtiosCAD software to drive the sample maker. own. Thus, in September 2015 L&E India bought a complete solution including Esko ArtiosCAD software and a Kongsberg V20 for its new office in Patparganj in New Delhi. Vikas Gupta, country manager and sales director – emerging markets, says, “Generally companies source globally from regions such as Asia, South-east Asia or Asia Pacific and we understand their packaging requirements, their pain areas and work directly with brands as we are present everywhere. L&E is a single point contact with local teams situated in all the above-mentioned regions.” L&E India is a nominated supplier of brands such as Pizza Hut, Papa Johns, Bata, Action Shoes and Home Depot amongst others. Gupta explains, “It was getting difficult for us to service our end customers and to offer them various options in line with their specific needs and provide faster turnaround in order to execute the orders. In addition, there’s a lead time of four to five days involved in die manufacturing, for a sample diecut carton to be made at the manufacturing facilities and sent to us. This was consuming a lot of time and thereby arose a strong need of an in-house sample maker CAD table.” L&E India again bought an Esko Kongsberg V
“Since the time we have been using Esko Kongsberg V20 table, our turnaround time has reduced to 24 hours from four to five days. It has helped to get more and more orders. My customers are very are satisfied to see the sample within a short timeframe. This also helps us in refraining from investing in dies fulfilling the real purpose of a CAD table. Now we are able to provide services to our customers in no time,” concludes Gupta. Shrihari Rao, sales director of Esko in India, says, “Esko’s combined CAD/CAM solution with ArtiosCAD Software and Kongsberg digital cutting tables offers a global standard, accuracy and most importantly a high throughput. We are happy that L&E recognized the versatility that Kongsberg offers in terms of tooling and the continuous developments we make for each of the applications. They needed the best of both worlds – cartons and corrugated- and our solutions fit in perfectly. L&E in India has been working with many convertors, like SP TechPack in North India and MK Industries in West India, who also invested in our solutions (ArtiosCAD and Kongsberg V Series) which guarantee unparalleled consistency. Esko’s major strength in the Indian market is its postsales support with around 100 Kongsberg table installations in this region alone.” Esko Kongsberg V cutters come in standard configurations for samplemaking, signage and display production. The Kongsberg V offers a broad selection of tools, providing quality results on a wide range of cutting, creasing, and plotting tasks. The Kongsberg V for packaging is a cutting table configured for sample making, short-run production of mock-ups and other packaging specific applications. This table is outfitted with a FLEXIHead. The Kongsberg V for signage and displays comes with a MultiCUT tool head offering milling productivity and a camera system.

Creation Reprographics chooses Esko’s WebCenter Streamlined communications, paperless operation and localisation increase capacity, facilitate growth, generate 30% savings. When Creation Reprographics began analyzing ways to improve daily client communications to create a leaner, more effective, production process, expanding the export side of its operation was a dim and distant consideration. However, after further investigation into the capabilities of WebCenter from Esko, it soon became clear that the UK operation could achieve time and cost savings through more transparent communication and at the same time boost profits and revenues by winning new business overseas. “This time last year, we started looking at what we were exporting to other countries,” explains Matt Francklow, responsible for sales and marketing at Creation Reprographics. “After analyzing that data, we could see that our international business was quite profitable and an avenue of sales we wanted to pursue further. Then we learned that by using WebCenter, we could easily have localised user interfaces to simplify communication as well as grant user privileges based on geography. This means that with this complete online portal, communications are streamlined and there are virtually no geographic limitations in terms of the areas we can effectively serve. This opened up many new opportunities in a number of countries, including Germany and Belgium, but particularly in Poland. That is where we are targeting most of our resources now, but we will also continue to work in other countries where printing remains a growth industry.” Founded in 2004 as a reprographics studio, Creation Reprographics provides
a range of platemaking, proofing, design and management services. It delivers high levels of customer service for brand, label and wide-web print customers and supports brands with innovative technical production strategies, including moving work from gravure print to flexo for more flexibility without any compromise in quality. Creation Reprographics aims to provide clients with an advantage in a very competitive market, and its implementation of WebCenter is a critical element of that strategy. “We are becoming much more brand focused, and we are also helping printers, who make up to 70% of our customers, do the same,” Francklow adds. “By driving that side of the business forward, we are helping printers appear more professional to their customers. Brands already know the benefits that complete solutions like WebCenter offer, and quite frequently they look for those benefits from their suppliers.”
Customization is key A very close developmental relationship with Esko was crucial to the successful adoption of WebCenter. Francklow explains, “We wanted to be able to completely understand the solution ourselves so we could create something that exactly fits our needs. We knew that a standard packaged solution would not be optimum, and we wanted the ability to customize over time as needs and requirements changed.” The first challenge was to streamline email communication, minimize traffic and ensure that everyone who needed to be involved in a given project had access to the latest
information. “We wanted to make sure people are not bogged down by having to respond to endless emails,” Francklow states. “Also very often, not everyone has timely access to all of the information and knowledge they need. With the cloud-based WebCenter, everyone can access the same information for clarity on what the exact project status is. It enables much clearer communication across the entire process.”
Building for a brighter future As part of Creation Reprographics’ continuous improvement strategy, the company has engaged with the University of Derby’s Invest to grow program. In return for a 30% investment grant, Creation Reprographics works with the University on investigating ways to drive technology forward that can aid operations in a variety of sectors. The company has also created student and graduate positions to help younger talent get their feet on the first rungs of the industry career ladder. “By participating in this program, we are doing our part to upskill the work force so they can gain higher paid positions in jobs that have a future career path,” Francklow states. “So they can say ‘we have done this degree, now we can go to these businesses and enjoy this career path.’ This approach helps us futureproof our business with the right technology and talent, and future-proof the industry by helping to groom the next generation of innovators.” WebCenter went fully live end of 2015 at Creation Reprographics. As for the collective anticipated benefit, Francklow says, “WebCenter will be the lynchpin of our business. I fully expect to see time and cost savings of around 30%. There will also be some production capacity gains. It took some time to decide exactly what we needed, but we expect our hard work to pay off even more further down the line.” WebCenter manages all the complexities of job creation from specification and design through execution. It offers a highly secure environment that is easy to integrate with existing business systems, no matter what the size of the company. WebCenter is GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) compliant.

The focus was on our Océ InfiniStream technology, and we were able to make some promising new contacts. Participation in FachPack in the framework of the PrintCity Alliance doubtless contributed to our success.
The PrintCity Alliance PrintCity is recognised as the ‘connection of competence’ strategic alliance across the entire printing, packaging & publishing value chain, promoting the value of print & packaging. After being absent for several years, the PrintCity Alliance returned to FachPack with a joint stand and gives a highly positive résumé.
Statements by the participating companies: Axel Schreier, Leonhard Kurz: FachPack 2015 was a very successful exhibition for us. The motto “Value Added Packaging” was particularly attractive for the visitors to our joint PrintCity stand. Numerous national and international contacts confirm that added value for packaging is an important topic for our customers. This was also reflected in the great interest shown in our decorative and functional coatings, since it is their diversity and capabilities that generate precisely that added value for packaging. Arno Dürr, Weilburger Graphics: WEILBURGER Graphics was represented at
FachPack for the first time with the partners in the PrintCity Alliance. The clearly defined structure of the exhibition had an impact on both the number and the quality of the visitors. We also noticed that well-known brand owners use the exhibition as a source of information. The relaxed surroundings encouraged some interesting talks. W&R Etiketten signs for their sixth MPS Flexo Press Signing of the sale took place during Labelexpo Europe in the MPS stand between Jack Willemsz, owner of W&R Etiketten and Arnaud Fleuren, MPS Area Sales Manager. W&R Etiketten has been a loyal MPS customer for many years, since the purchase of their very first MPS press back in 2000. Willemsz had an integral role in the successful inauguration ceremony for the new MPS headquarters in Arnhem earlier this year.
MPS confirms the sale of a sixth flexo press to W&R Etiketten, a Dutch label printer headquartered in Tilburg, the Netherlands. Ordered was an EF 430mm web width flexo press with eight colours and APC (Automated Print Control) package, joining five MPS flexo presses currently running full label production at W&R Etiketten.
The MPS EF is a high-quality and highly automated multi-substrate flexo press, especially designed for label production and flexible packaging printing on thin unsupported film or thick cartonboard. The EF, MPS’ flagship press provides the ultimate in flexibility with optional converting units that can be implemented at any location along the press using the flexible positioning rail system. The innovative MPS iControl, Quick Change Die and Crisp.Dot technologies enable operators to maximize press performance, with ease of operation and reliability. Founded in 1992, W&R Etiketten with five MPS flexo presses, two digital presses, diecutters and their own prepress and design
studio, is today recognized as a significant player on the Dutch label market. In the food industry, where the company has its primary focus, W&R sees a growing demand for multi-colour, specialized labels with applications requiring print on the backing or the adhesive side of the label. The new EF flexo press ordered by W&R Etiketten is in response to this trend. Willemsz explains why MPS was chosen again: “This was a logical step for us. We have experienced many years of exceptional support from MPS and are extremely satisfied with the output of our current five MPS presses. The new EF flexo press will enhance our existing range of print machinery and will enable W&R Etiketten to extend additional flexibility to our customers, with the ability to interchange production between our various machines. MPS is a pioneer in the narrow web industry, and we are honoured to partner with them.”
