FROM THE EDITORS’ DESK Dear Readers, drink technology India (dti) and PackTech were held for the fourth time as a combined event. FoodPex, focusing on processing and packaging solid foods of all kinds, was a new addition. This time the show saw approximately 40-percent increase in exhibition space. The over 25-percent increase in number of exhibitors and over 18 percent increase in number of visitors made the trio a record event. It surpassed all expectation with more space, more exhibitors and more visitors and was so far the largest event. It closed its doors at the Bombay Exhibition Centre in Mumbai, having seen nearly 12,100 visitors and featured 298 exhibitors. Exhibitors included international and domestic companies presenting the latest technologies and solutions for the Indian market. The Packaging Design, Innovation and Technology (PDIT) Conference was organized together with IPPStar was very well received among visitors and was booked to capacity. The central theme of the conference was SAVE FOOD. Launched in partnership with FAO of the UN during interpack 2011, the conference addresses the problem of food losses and food waste. For the first time ever, the results of a field study on food losses in India were presented at the conference. The conference program addressed topics such as improving efficiency, sustainability, traceability and intelligent packaging. Another development in the exhibition arena is the collaborative venture agreed between Messe Düsseldorf India and the Indian Institute of Packaging (IIP). From next year onwards, the two organisers will bundle their expertise in the packaging sector and the related processing industry with a focus on the Indian market. Also read about the amazing strides 3D printing is making world over. The world’s first 3D printed pop-up retail store has come up for luxury fashion brand Louis Vuitton. The eye-catching 9m-wide, 10m-long and 2.7m-high (29.5ft x 32.8ft x 8.85ft) structure was created using OMUS’ recentlyinstalled Massivit 1800 3D Printer in just 18 days and is currently capturing the gaze of shoppers at Sydney’s Westfield shopping centre. On the installation front, Print Factory located in Sheshadripuram, Bangalore, which overhauled its pre-press operations with Kodak thermal CtP technology and workflow solutions several years ago, increased its press room efficiency to an extent it added a second 4-colour press to increase commercial jobs. Their latest Kodak addition is Kodak Flexcel NX Wide Hybrid system. This new set-up will enable Print Factory to print directly on corrugated sheets. It will also deliver significant cost savings compared to their previous reliance on film with the introduction of thermal plates. An interesting innovation recently has been by Indian major Uflex. It has engineered the Multi-Lane Automatic Linear Pick - Fill & Seal Machine. Packers for years have been grappling with the problem of narrow mouth opening of preformed Flat Bottom or 3D pouches on the filling lines. The vacuum cups of the new machine open a pouch by holding its 4 Ps or the panels thereby opening up the mouth as wide as it gets. This will address the problem of narrow opening and sluggish filling of pouches. There are many more interesting stories in the year ending issue of PRESSIdeas. Enjoy reading and keep in touch! We Wish You A Very Happy & Successful New Year 2017!

Have your print finishing services kept up with the shift in demand? The digital revolution has had a major impact on the printing industry by way of shorter turn times; shorter print runs; the rise of big data; and personalized communications. Digital enhancement equipment is an excellent way to provide an economical solution for these shorter runs that trade finishers and commercial printers are faced with today. Here are 5 ways a digital enhancement press could change a print finishing business for the better.
We live in a sensory-driven world Researchers everywhere are releasing studies on how sensory marketing impacts the experience consumers have with brands. In fact, Sappi’s The Neuroscience of Touch takes a fascinating dive into how and why we respond so well to haptic brands. The USPS even created a special promotion rewarding marketers who leverage the tactile aspect of print to engage with their audience. Digital enhancement technologies allow you to provide this sensory appeal to so much more than just your customers’ direct mail projects. Packaging, magazine covers,

collateral – the sky is the limit. Consumers will be tempted to touch and feel the work.
Short-run? No problem As requests for smaller and smaller production runs comes in – the conversation can shift from “You can do that, but it’s going to cost this cringe-worthy number” to “Shortrun? No problem! Check out the dimension we can also bring to your design.” Suddenly, customers are less focused on price, and more focused on how they can best utilize the technology to their advantage.
Relevance is driving the way brands communicate Personalization and relevance is being talked about all around. For the longest time, personalization could only be added via digital printing production or a pass through the inkjet machine. Now, anyone can add a touch of personalization to any project – from direct mail and packaging, to presentation folders and personalized magazines. Thus, everyone can become the go-to resource for innovative ideas on making relevant communications stand-out like never before.
Offset, Digital, & beyond compatibility Trade finishers generally have no control over how their customers produce printed sheets…and that’s okay! With Scodix digital enhancement presses, they are able to run Offset and Digitally printed sheets; take laminated sheets to new heights, or even projects using synthetic leather and polypropylene (PVC) substrates; and maintain the flexibility to work on a project no matter how its produced.
Decrease make-readies – no Dies needed One can extend the PDF workflow into production by eliminating the need for Die creations. By running computer-to-press, printers can achieve the variable flexibility of Digital printing while maintaining the superb quality of UV coatings. Added advantages include ease of registration and decreased make-ready times which will result in enhanced business opportunities and applications.

New start-up company founded by Ostwestfalen-Lippe University “A new look at authentication” – with that slogan the newly found coverno GmbH will start research on banknote security and authentication as of January 2017. The startup company was founded on November 29 as a cooperation between the Institute for Industrial Information Technology (inIT) of the Ostwestfalen-Lippe (OWL) university and Koenig & Bauer AG (KBA) of Würzburg. Due to their reliability, anonymity and the general trust placed in them, banknotes remain the preferred and worldwide accepted means of payment. Banknote security and authentication play an ever more important role in the cash-cycle as counterfeits are becoming more sophisticated. Against this background the researchers of the Institute for Industrial Information Technology (inIT) of the OWL university have worked together for the past years with KBA-NotaSys (part of the KBA Group) on the creation of intelligent banknotes which can be authenticated in completely new ways. As the most recent step, both partners have founded the new company coverno GmbH under the umbrella of the Centre for Industrial IT (CIIT). “coverno” stands for Cognoscere verum novum (Latin : To discover the verity new) Johannes Scheade, Technical Director at
KBA-NotaSys and long-term project partner explains: “For us this is a unique opportunity to work together with the researchers of one of the best institutions in Europe on the topic of banknote security in the context of Industry 4.0 and digitisation.” “The foundation of a common activity between companies and the university on our campus is an amazing opportunity to mix the complex work of research with the creation of a useable product and the creation of value,” says university director Oliver Hermann. Professor Volker Lohweg, board member of inIT and closely involved in the creation of the new company is convinced that the close cooperation in the creation of systems for banknote security and authentication
will create a tremendous value for the partners; “Now we can utilise our worldwide recognised research results and transfer this knowledge in the new company. I am very happy that we can further intensify the cooperation in CIIT. I have to mention my gratefulness to our vice-president of research and technology transfer, Professor Stefan Witte, who has worked relentlessly on the topic of creating new companies on the campus.

specialized, high-speed field-programmable gate array (FPGA) devices. Automated detection and counting yields consistent and repeatable results leading to improved grading of production. Defects as small as 0.02 mm2 (less than half of the width of a human hair) may be detected which enables ABB’s dirt count system to fully comply with all defect size classifications in the ISO/ TAPPI/ANSI standards. Connectivity to millwide systems and integration with ABB pulp and paper automation systems ensures that defect data can be acted upon at the quality management and process control levels. Unlike older technology that attempted to count dirt based on single sheets or narrow webs, ABB’s full web dirt count system can detect and classify information across the entire web in real-time. The system can be configured with either transmission or reflection illumination methods. ABB’s dirt count system sets the new standards in web imaging systems to optimize product quality for the paper industry. Since the 1970’s, ABB has delivered over 1,300 web imaging systems around
the world. The system is backed by ABB’s longstanding commitment to support its products over an extended lifecycle and by ABB’s dedicated global network of highly trained service personnel. ABB is a pioneering technology provider in electrification products, robotics and motion, industrial automation and power grids, serving customers in utilities, industry and transport & infrastructure globally. Continuing a more than 125-year history of innovation, ABB operates in more than 100 countries.

KBA remains No.1 in high-performance newspaper printing Over the course of the past few years, KBA Digital & Web has adjusted successfully to the drastically shrinking market for new newspaper presses and in the meantime places an additional focus on growing market segments such as service or digital, functional and packaging printing. Even so, the role of the world’s leading supplier of newspaper press lines for the upper and highest performance classes remains undisputed, and the modern portfolio presented by the manufacturer of the first ever rotary newspaper press is evidence that KBA has no intention of surrendering this position. The last 12 months have seen orders received from Mittelrhein Verlag in Koblenz for a further Commander CT 6/2, from Mitteldeutsche Zeitung in Halle and Druck- und Pressehaus Naumann in Gelnhausen for two Commander CL presses, and from CPI on the island of La Réunion for a waterless KBA Cortina. Stefan Segger, new sales director at KBA Digital & Web: “Against the background of the market developments in newspaper printing, we are quite satisfied with the orders received. Further projects are in the pipeline and decisions are expected soon. When it

Series production of digital press gets off to successful start in the growing label market Considerable customer interest in joint development by Heidelberg and Gallus.
The label market is one of the printing industry’s biggest growth segments. The dynamic growth in demand for digitally printed labels in particular continues unabated. Following the global market launch of the Gallus Labelfire 340 digital label press – a joint development by Heidelberg and Gallus based on leading inkjet technology from Fujifilm – series production is now getting off to a successful start at the Wiesloch-Walldorf site. Initial customers of the new series presses include several companies from the United States. Heidelberg produces the digital inkjet print engine of the Labelfire in Wiesloch-Walldorf. The company’s entire digital printing portfolio will also be manufactured here in the future. The base unit of the new press is made by Swiss subsidiary Gallus at its German production site in Langgöns. The system is designed to meet growing demand for the costeffective production of short, medium, and versioned label runs.
Heidelberg is making the smart print shop a reality, enabling users to largely automate their offset and digital printing processes and control these in a standardized, transparent way.
“The requirements related to quality, flexibility, and speed are getting even more demanding in label production,” says Stephan Plenz, member of the Management Board responsible for Heidelberg Equipment. “With the Gallus Labelfire, we’re leading our customers into the digital future with the growing label market. The considerable interest confirms we’ve adopted the right approach,” he adds.
Well-known U.S. label print shops order further presses Following numerous orders from Europe and Australia, Heidelberg and Gallus are now also enjoying success in the key American market. Info Label from Clifton Park in New York is getting the first Gallus Labelfire 340 supplied to a label print shop in the United States. The company’s President Mark Dufort took a look at the first demonstration press at the Digital Label Forum in Heidelberg and then at Gallus in St. Gallen. “By investing in the Gallus Labelfire 340, we’re offering our customers outstanding quality combined with shorter delivery times at lower costs,” he explains. Another U.S. customer – Hub Labels from Hagerstown in Maryland – has also signed up for the new Gallus Labelfire 340 digital label press. Its first glimpse of the machine was at Labelexpo Europe 2015 in Brussels and the scheduled delivery date is fast approaching. Thomas Dahbura, President of Hub Labels, has the following to say about the press: “This is the first digital press I’ve seen that can do exactly what I expect it to. It integrates all steps from the reel to the finished label in a single production pass – whether digital or flexographic printing, coldfoil printing or die cutting. I was impressed by how much effort Gallus and Heidelberg put into ensuring this system was a success. Although we’ve already seen other presses with an excellent resolution of 600

Digital printing drives change in the growth segment The new Gallus Labelfire 340 digital printing system has been designed for the selfadhesive labels market. The global print volume for these labels is growing by about 4 percent a year. Although nearly 5 percent of this volume is printed digitally, this figure is rising rapidly with up to double-digit growth rates. Indeed, digital printing is driving change in this highly promising market segment. It is anticipated that, in the medium term, just under half of the presses sold in this sector will be digital. By launching this new technology, Heidelberg and Gallus are actively shaping change in the business models used in this segment and offering users a versatile and cost-effective solution. The entire digital printing portfolio, together with the offset systems from Heidelberg, can be integrated into a print shop’s overall workflow using the new Prinect Digital

Uflex launches Direct UV Offset Printable Polyester Film The company engineers speciality polyester film F-UVC suitable for direct UV offset printing without primer/ treatment. UV offset printing on non-absorptive surfaces is getting popular by the days. It gives an ultimate packaging solution for Board Lamination and Decorative Printing. The daunting challenge in this segment however remains the availability of right kind of substrate where direct printing can be done without any primer/ treatment.
“Convertors had been facing difficulties with primer coating of the films as it takes a lot of time. This had been impeding their productivity. I am happy that the team at Uflex addressed the pain point of convertors by engineering the UV Offset Printable PET Film, which now permits surface printing without any treatment.” - Ashok Chaturvedi, Uflex

Let’s try to understand this, a little better. Liquids do not wet surfaces with free energies lower than their surface tension. On the contrary an extremely high surface free energy as compared to the surface tension of the ink will also result in poor wetting and adhesion. Therefore according to printing industry experts, for best wetting and ink adhesion on to nonabsorptive surfaces the ‘dyne level’ or the surface free energy of the substrate should be about 10 dynes above the surface tension of the ink. Unfortunately many polymeric substrates have too low surface energy required for good printing and ink adhesion and therefore the substrate has to be remedially modified in order to make it printable. This modification is usually done with an adjustable corona treatment or by applying a suitable primer
coating. Corona treatment is fast and relatively inexpensive, but surface dyne levels are susceptible to loss or decay during prolonged storage and upon contact with some fountain solutions. Precautions must be taken to obtain a uniform dyne level that is not too high. Corona treatments can at times also dramatically increase troublesome static charges in the material treated. Therefore to avoid this, primer coatings that adhere to both the substrate and to the subsequently applied inks are used. This as one could well imagine is an elaborate and time consuming process that has been posing further challenges for the convertors. With this problem statement at hand, India’s largest multinational flexible packaging materials and solution company, Uflex has engineered a speciality polyester film F-UVC film which is suitable for direct UV offset printing without requiring any primer/ treatment. The film is available in both bare transparent and metallized variants, where the un-metallized side is used for UV offset printing and UV curing. The metallized polyester film i.e. FLEXMETPROTECTTM (F-UVC-M) is available in optical density ranging from 1.4 to 2.2. The wide range of optical densities gives choice to customer to use the product for diverse
pressideas/ plc
range of applications. The metal bond between the metal and the film is 130-180 gms/25mm.
There are several benefits of Direct UV Offset Printable PET Film: (a) It is suitable for direct surface printing without primer/ corona treatment; (b) The lead time is minimum at convertors’ end; (c) Yields excellent print results, high gloss and clarity with high quality resolution for pictures and half tone jobs with good scuffing resistance; (d) It is suitable for high speed machines and is versatile, tear proof and crack resistant; (e) It offers excellent smoothness, flatness and ink adhesion.
Mr. J.K. Sharma, AGM, Technical Service and New Product Development (Films), Uflex highlighting the benefits of the Direct UV Offset Printable PET Film said, “Primer coating for rendering the films printable is a cumbersome and time consuming exercise at the Convertors’ end. The coating machine is a big capital investment in itself. Therefore with this new innovation by Uflex, the convertors can heave a sigh of relief. Not only does the film increase operational efficiencies of convertors but also restricts their capital expenditure.” Talking about this new speciality film, Mr. Pramod Sirsamkar, President – Technical & New Product Development (Films), Uflex said, “This is a great product for UV curable offset printing giving excellent
customer and the end user. The demand for this film is very encouraging.” Mr. Ashok Chaturvedi, Chairman and Managing Director, Uflex expressing delight at the new launch said, “Our feedback loop in the global market is very strong. We are always in touch with our clients globally and are promptly responsive to their needs. Convertors had been facing difficulties with primer coating of the films as it takes a lot of time. This had been impeding their productivity. Clariant’s Colorforward 2018 forecast reflects a dark mood among consumers The yoga practice of
=kkVd inspires the pearl orange colour in the Through the Mirror palette. Clariant, a global specialty chemicals expert has announced the release of ColorForward 2018, the 12th edition of the annual colour forecasting guide for the plastics industry. As it does every year, the international ColorForward team took a deep dive into the state of consumer attitudes and likely colour preferences for the coming years. All four of the global social trends identified reflected an over-arching feeling of sadness, fear and distrust of the conventional world as-it-is. Behind that, however, is what might be termed a “silver lining.” A sense of resolve… of determination to endure and a cautious optimism that people can make a difference and things will get better over time. This melancholy mood is evident in the fact that all the colours are toned down and a little bit grey but, at the same time, warm, organic and hopeful. The ColorForward concept was created to help brand managers and designers anticipate – years in advance – what colours will connect with consumers on a deep, emotional level. Today, after twelve successful years, this unique design tool is rapidly gaining credibility.

“We will present the 2018 forecast at Heimtextil in Frankfurt in January and at Stockholm Design Week in February, and we have been invited to speak at the prestigious Fuse London design event in December,” says Judith van Vliet, ColorWorks Designer and a leader of the ColorForward team. “It is very unusual for a company like Clariant to be consulted on trends by the design community and I think is very real reflection of the respect they have for our work.” The ColorForward advantage arises from its long-term global view of social trends. Other forecasts, van Vliet explains, are more focused on reacting to short-term trends. Clariant, on the other hand, tries to identify the deep-seated emotions
that influence how consumers respond to color and, by extension, to a manufacturer’s product. She concludes: “I think that’s what makes ColorForward different from other forecasts and why we are getting so much attention.” ColorForward 2018 has been completely repackaged this year. The presentation materials are simpler and cleaner. The forecast developers composed a single image for each of the four trend themes. Then, discrete facets of each image are used to represent the different elements of each trend. The trend colours are offered in a printed booklet and with molded plastic plaques that allow participants not only to see the colors but also to touch them, feel them and hold them in different lighting or against different backgrounds.
The ColorForward 2018 trends and colors include: Newmorrow: the Newmorrow trend theme reflects a sort of yin-yang mood among consumers. On the one hand, they believe the “system” is rotten; unable to change economic and social conditions
pressideas/ plc
that have become intolerable. On the other hand, there is also a conviction that change is still possible… not by government but from grass-roots efforts of individuals and small groups. This change, it is understood, will come only slowly and so there is a need for “cathedral thinking.” Just as it took the work of generations to build the huge medieval churches of Europe, changing and improving a corrupt system requires unselfish commitment, a long-term vision and faith that the final objective can be achieved in the end. It is not surprising then, that the Newmorrow colour palette includes a brownish green called Primordial Soup. It prompts references to sewage and death and some have referred to it as “the ugliest colour in the world,” but it also reminds us of the verdant, rich biological goop that spawned life as we know it. LongitudeLatitudeAttitude Dissatisfaction with conventional ways of living also stands behind the LongitudeLatitudeAttitude trend theme. It acknowledges that a growing number of human beings are choosing to have no fixed address. These are the “new nomads.” Many are artists, musicians or creative entrepreneurs, but what they really have in common is the desire for a minimalist, wandering lifestyle, limiting their possessions to what they can conveniently carry. These New World citizens cherish the flexibility of a lifestyle that embraces their passion for life on the move and that immerses them in a fusion of ethnicities and interests. The colors of LongitudeLatitudeAttitude are Bohemian. They range from a purplish fuchsia, called Nomadness, a warm, almostorange yellow named Kaleido tribe, and grey blue called Cirrus aviaticus after the contrails of jet planes against the otherwise cloudless sky. Through the mirror Somewhere along the way, many consumers began to experience unpleasant feelings of emptiness related to their mainstream lifestyles. There is a sense that they have lost touch with their inner selves or, perhaps, never really considered that inner self as they felt their way through their lives. The trend theme named Through the Mirror attempts to capture a sense of ennui – of being adrift in a modern world
while, at the same time, knowing that a spiritual reawakening is possible. The yoga practice of =kkVd inspires the pearl orange colour in the Through the Mirror palette. This Sanskrit phrase is pronounced ‘trataka’ and means to gaze steadily at a fixed spot in order to focus the mind inward, blanking out visual perception and withdrawing from the external world. Nerdylicious: Out from the gloom that seems to lie behind the other trends described above, there comes the story about the validation of a group of people long stereotyped as a bunch of quirky, overly intellectual misfits – the “nerds.”
The Nerdylicious trend theme sees these brainiacs finding acceptance as innovators in a complex world, with continuous curiosity and a passion for exploring new ideas and complex puzzles. Although the colours of Nerdylicious are soft and subdued like most in the other trend groups, they are nevertheless the brightest and most optimistic of any in the 2018 palette. For instance, Lightning Boot is a transparent almost-orange yellow that is reminiscent of LED lights on a control panel, while Alberting out! is a slightly dirty optical white – a tribute to the ultimate nerd, Albert Einstein. It reminds one of lab coats gone dingy after back-to-back 18-hour work days.

things, it focuses on ways that the packaging industry can use its know-how to improve the situation. For the first time ever, the results of a field study on food losses in India were presented at the conference. The objective of the scientific study was to find ways to avoid food losses in India and, in doing so, to allow companies with corresponding solutions to make sustainable investments to benefit everyone involved. The conference program was rounded out by topics such as improving efficiency, sustainability, traceability and intelligent packaging. The first-rate program of events that accompanied the exhibition also allowed visitors attending drink technology India to gathering information about current and future trends in the food, beverage and liquid-food industry and about packaging and related processing technology in general. The roundtable talks, which were booked to capacity on both days, were extremely well received. Notable representatives of the beverage and
liquid-food industry made presentations on the topic “Beverage manufacturing, food processing and product packaging in India: Lifestyle, trends, challenges and future concepts.” Dr. Keshab Nandy from Tilaknagar Industries Ltd. summed up the results on behalf of the other participants: “The roundtable talks at dti 2016 were extremely well organized. The experts’ professional presentations also verified that fact. I was particularly impressed by the quality of the audience members. They discussed important challenges and issues facing the food and beverage industry in India with great intensity and presented solutions.” Attendance at the drink technology India Exhibitor Forum was very high. Exhibitors presented their product solutions for the beverage and food market in India. Seminar of pad printing association “Innovation Tampondruck” Live demonstration of the direct engravable nyloprint DLE 30 S pad printing plate impresses participants The first seminar of the pad printing association “Innovation Tampondruck” took place on the 10thof November 2016, at Sieb- und Tampondruck Gailing in Bietigheim-Bissingen. Together with Flint Group and Marabu, Gailing is one of the founding members of the association which was established in the autumn of 2013. The interest in the seminar was overwhelming, and with 50 participants, the event was fully booked. The first host, Peter Gailing, of Sieb- und Tampondruck Gailing, welcomed the attendees. Printers, ink manufacturers, machine manufacturers, pad manufacturers, and plate manufacturers as well as specialists from research institutions arrived from all over Germany, Switzerland and the Czech Republic. Gailing emphasised the complexity of the pad printing method and pointed out the objective of this community: creating a strong network of experts from all areas in order to work together on the best solutions and innovations. A special highlight of the event was the live printing demonstration with a 6-colourmicroPrint ML 500press, which was brought in from Switzerland exclusively for the seminar. The 3-colour print on mint boxes demonstrated the high print quality that can be achieved when press, pad, ink and
printing plate work perfectly together. In this practical application, the direct engravable nyloprint DLE 30 S printing plate from Flint Group played a vital role. Jürgen Veser, spokesman of “Innovation Tampondruck” and technical service employee at Flint Group Flexographic Products, explained this plate type in further detail during his presentation on drivers and trends regarding pad printing’s future. The nyloprint DLE 30 S pad printing plate can be imaged by direct laser engraving. The plate making process is fast and easy as additional production steps such as light exposure and washing are obsolete. Additionally, the plate exhibits very good cup gliding characteristics and stability on press together with excellent ink transfer. This product novelty aroused particular interest amongst the participants who used the opportunity to discuss further details with Jürgen Veser. Since its launch in autumn 2015, the nyloprint DLE 30 S plate is successfully used all over the world. In combination with new laser systems, ideal opportunities to ease plate making processes are provided. At the beginning of 2017, Flint Group will introduce the nyloprint DLE 45 S to the market. This plate type with a deeper relief allows an even higher ink transfer. By expanding the portfolio
of direct engravable pad printing plates, Flint Group covers all applications. The presentations of the seminar were as diverse as the participants: Representatives of the companies Lang & Schmitt, Flint Group, TampoTechnik, Lambda Technology, Bochonow Maschinenbau, Marabu and Sieb- und Tampondruck Gailing talked about printing presses, printing plates, pad characteristics, UV exposure units, legal policies, parameters regarding print and ink quality as well as the opportunity of additional pad printing training for screen printers. The lively information exchange amongst the participants, the positive feedback throughout the seminar, as well as the demand for more seminars in the future showed that the event was worth its effort: „After long consideration, the community’s executive committee decided in favour of this seminar and burdened themselves with a lot of work. All in all I have to say that this was a successful and well accepted event, worthy to be continued next year”, comments Jürgen Veser.

High label print quality with SPGPrints’ advanced rotary screen solutions Singapore-based label converter National Label Company Asia achieves with clear text in multiple languages on healthcare labels RotaMesh 405 screen and rotaLEN direct laser engraver National Label Company Asia is meeting the demand for fine and small rotary screen-printed text from healthcare brandowners, while achieving cost efficiencies, after adopting SPGPrints’ nonwoven nickel RotaMesh 405 screen and installing a rotaLEN direct laser engraver for imaging screens. Founded in 2013 and based in Singapore, National Label Company Asia provides premium decorative self-adhesive labels, predominately for global brand owners and contract packagers in the personal care, pharmaceutical and consumer battery markets. The company sees rotary screen printing as a vital complementary process for achieving numerous effects, like the opaque white for the ‘no label look,’ and vivid graphics that stand out on a crowded shelf and attract the consumer’s attention. SPGPrints’ RSI modules are featured on National Label’s three 440mm-wide Nilpeter presses – one flexo, one offset and one gravure; these presses are responsible for all output at the Singapore plant. The nickel RotaMesh screens used on the presses can be both re-used and re-imaged several times. Screen print also is preferred for printing product information on the label because it provides the text with a vividness that makes it stand out and easy to read. SPGPrints’ RotaMesh 405 was chosen by National Label for this application because its fine mesh met expectations of accuracy and clarity when reproducing small text in Asian writing systems. The 405 Mesh combines relatively large open areas with thin, but robust stencil walls. The result is a mesh with approximately 164,000 holes per square inch. With the high mesh count, it achieves sharp edges while avoiding the risk of clogging, while offering the same strength and resilience as screens for standard or coarser effects. Mr. Arumugam Jayakumar, prepress manager at National Label, comments on
the importance of clear definition in Asian languages: “Printing Thai and Bengali curls and head strokes, and Japanese, Chinese and Vietnamese logograms is a delicate matter. Any misprint or omission of even part of a character can render a complete phrase meaningless. Moreover, some brand owners seek single label solutions for multiple markets. This means relatively small text has to be reproduced clearly to ensure legibility. SPGPrints’ RotaMesh 405 screen enables precise reproduction of 6-Point text, at speeds of up to 75 metres per minute. As a result, we can provide labels with more information that is both legible and prominent, while maintaining high productivity levels.”
in the unlikely event of a screen breakage during production, the cycles are fast enough to stop production temporarily and perform a remake without significantly compromising productivity.
For Mr. Jayakumar, the reusability of RotaMesh screens brings significant cost benefits:“For repeat orders, we keep screens in storage until the next time they are required. Typically, we can reuse a screen five times before reclaiming the screen and imaging it with a new design. A screen may be used for up to ten different designs. This represents a huge long-term consumables saving.”
Mr. Jayakumar says: “We RIPfiles as single colours, and send them to the rotaLEN, and send to the engraver directly. The software allows fast changes and retrieval of files. This means we can deal with the increasing number of repeat orders at shorter notice, while assuring identical results.
rotaLEN direct laser engraver investment: fast, precise prepress workflow In parallel with the adoption of the 405 mesh, National Label installed SPGPrints’ rotaLEN direct laser engraver to image screens in a digital process. In an engraving cycle that takes no more than 30 minutes, a CO2 laser burns away the lacquer. After a brief rinse, the screen is ready for the press.
On any shift, two operators are responsible for all prepress requirements, including rotaLEN jobs. The automated process minimises manual input and the chance of handling errors, so that quality is not determined by the operators, allowing improved consistency. The software combined with the single-step process of rotaLEN means National Label can meet demand with greater flexibility.
“Thanks to the rotaLEN engraver’s automation, quality does not depend on the operator. It gives us a perfect workflow ensuring the consistency and tight tolerances demanded by the brand owners.” Mr Jayakumar concludes: “SPGPrints’ 405 Mesh, together with the rotaLEN engraver gives us a reliable, productive and costefficient rotary screen workflow for ensuring the consistency and tight tolerances demanded by the brand owners.”
The speed of the process enables National Label to maintain uninterrupted workflows without bottlenecks, even when surges of demand for screen orders occur. In such cases, the number of screens engraved may rise from an average of three to ten or more. Furthermore,

Packaging printer achieves high environmental efficiency and saves costs with technology from Heidelberg Anicolor technology permits annual savings of 37 metric tons of CO2 and 80,000 kilowatt hours as well as around EUR 155,000 through less paper waste The ceremony for the “100 Betriebe für Ressourceneffizienz” (100 Companies for Resource Efficiency) took place in October of this year under the auspices of Minister President Winfried Kretschmann. Among the companies were packaging manufacturer August Faller GmbH & Co. KG. based in Waldkirch and Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg), which together developed an environmentally friendly offset printing application for folding cartons. The “Allianz für Ressourceneffizienz” (Alliance for Resource Efficiency) was established in 2014 in Baden-Württemberg by the Federal Ministry of the Environment and the leading trade associations as well as the state Chambers of Industry and Commerce. A key initiative of this alliance is “100 Companies for Resource Efficiency”. Its purpose is to showcase how resource efficiency can be successfully implemented and the kinds of economic and ecological successes that can be achieved, using 100 companies as examples. August Faller GmbH & Co. KG manufactures folding cartons for the pharmaceutical and healthcare industries and was one of the first packaging print shops to recognize the potential of the Anicolor technology in 50 x 70 format from Heidelberg. The company was looking for a cost-effective process to address the increasing trend towards short runs, while also taking into consideration the constantly changing spot colors specifically required for folding cartons. The Anicolor unit is a zoneless inking unit that needs just two rollers rather than the up to 17 rollers required in conventional offset printing. Faller worked closely with the specialists from Heidelberg to pilot the adaptation of the Speedmaster XL 75 Anicolor for the production of folding cartons. Up to then, the press was mainly used for commercial printing in 35 x 50 cm format.
Paper waste, costs, and impact on the environment all reduced The pilot phase ran from the start of 2014 until the middle of 2015, with impressive
36
November 2016
results: the Speedmaster XL 75 Anicolor enabled paper waste to be reduced by 71.5 percent compared with conventional offset printing, which is equivalent to a saving of 163 metric tons of cardboard and around EUR 155,000 per year. The environment also benefited, with savings of around 37 metric tons of CO2 and around 80,000 kilowatt hours per year. All of these technical adaptations have now been incorporated into the Speedmaster XL 75 Anicolor, and 40 percent of all Anicolor
presses supplied are now being used in packaging print shops. An enhancement of the Anicolor press, Anicolor 2, was presented at drupa 2016 with an even wider range of applications and new uses, particularly in packaging printing (see press release dated 18 February 2016). Examples are 7-color printing with Multicolor technology and UV printing for achieving an even glossier result. The Speedmaster XL 75 Anicolor 2 with the new design has been in production since November of this year, and is supplied with all the other drupa innovations.

FDA proposes limit on ‘lead’ in cosmetic lip products The goal is to ensure that cosmetic lip products and externally applied cosmetics do not contain lead as an impurity at levels that would pose a health risk. FDA has concluded that a recommended maximum level of 10 ppm for lead as an impurity in cosmetic lip products and externally applied cosmetics would not pose a health risk.
10 ppm for lead as an impurity in cosmetics based on considerations of a reasonably achievable level, scientific risk assessment, good manufacturing practices, technical feasibility, and appropriate analytical methods.
Regulated cosmetic products The issuance of the guidance supported the effort to limit human exposure to lead in finished FDA-regulated cosmetic products by educating new manufacturers who wish to enter the market and encouraging current manufacturers to continue to follow or improve on voluntary good manufacturing practices that limit trace amounts of lead as an impurity. FDA regulates cosmetics under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FD&C Act) and Fair Packaging and Labeling Act (FPLA). These laws require that cosmetics marketed in the United States be safe under their intended and customary conditions of use, and be properly labeled. Cosmetics are not subject to pre-market approval by FDA. However, pre-market approval is required for the colour additives used as ingredients in cosmetics. Although FDA has not set limits for lead as an impurity in cosmetics, most listed color additives have specifications for lead as an impurity as part of the FDA’s requirements for their safe use. The International Cooperation on Cosmetics Regulation and regions such as Canada and the European Union have set a limit of
Sampling lip products The surveys have indicated that levels of lead in the cosmetic lip products and externally applied cosmetics sampled are for the most part well below 10 ppm, leading to expect that this recommended maximum level is achievable by all manufacturers of these products. The goal is to ensure that cosmetic lip products and externally applied cosmetics do not contain lead as an impurity at levels that would pose a health risk. FDA has determined that a maximum level of 10 ppm in cosmetic lip products and externally applied cosmetics would not pose a health risk, but FDA encourages manufacturers of these products to follow or continue to follow manufacturing practices that allow them to achieve levels of lead lower than 10 ppm whenever feasible.
Exposure to lead from externally applied cosmetics Dermal absorption of lead from externally applied cosmetics is very small. Results for lead uptake by the skin were reported for four lead compounds that resemble cosmetic ingredients. Based on those data, it estimated that only a very small amount (0.41%) of the lead present as an impurity in
an externally applied cosmetic is absorbed by the skin. The amount of exposure to lead as an impurity in a product such as body lotion is higher because average applications are higher (8.7 g/day). Exposure to lead from externally applied cosmetics is up to 150 times lower than exposure to lead from cosmetic lip products. Therefore, the potential elevation of blood lead levels from 10 ppm lead in these products is too small to be measured in routine blood analysis and requires state of the art analytical technology. The data show that over 99% of the cosmetic lip products and externally applied cosmetics on the U.S. market contain lead at levels below our recommended maximum level. Therefore, FDA encourages firms to continue the manufacturing practices that achieve these lower levels of lead in their finished products.
About FDA The FDA, an agency within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, protects the public health by assuring the safety, effectiveness, and security of human and veterinary drugs, vaccines and other biological products for human use, and medical devices. The agency also is responsible for the safety and security of our nation’s food supply, cosmetics, dietary supplements, products that give off electronic radiation, and for regulating tobacco products.

Uflex Engineers Multi-Lane Automatic Linear Pick – Fill & Seal machine Packers for years have been grappling with the problem of narrow mouth opening of preformed Flat Bottom Pouches or threedimensional (3D) pouches on the filling lines. The vacuum cups of conventional Pick - Fill & Seal (PFS) Machines clamp open a pouch by holding its two-side gussets thus resulting in a very narrow opening. This leads to rather sluggish filling of these pouches without being able to have full mouth opening. Let’s face it; the impeded filling speed of conventional PFS machines has not been able to do justice to the stateof-the-art 3D / flat bottom pouches that are touted to take flexible packaging to a whole new level of functional and aesthetic excellence. India’s flexible packaging materials and solution major Uflex, with this problem statement at hand, has engineered the Multi-Lane Automatic Linear Pick - Fill & Seal Machine. The vacuum cups of this machine unlike the conventional PFS machines clamp open a pouch by holding its 4 Ps or the panels thereby opening up the mouth as wide as it gets. If we compare any rotary PFS machine to the newly engineered Multi-Lane Automatic Linear Pick - Fill & Seal Machine, the comparable speed of filling and sealing 3D/flat bottom pouches has more than doubled. Uflex is the only company in India to have indigenously engineered this simple and intellectually appealing machine. This machine can be equipped with Volumetric,

Gravimetric or Liquid Filling systems. The clear advantages of the Multi-Lane Automatic Linear Pick - Fill & Seal Machine are: • Higher filling output rate (pouches/ minute) of 3D/flat bottom pouches owing to wider mouth opening and the machine being multi-lane • Since the mouth of the pouch is opened to the hilt, bigger sized products can be inserted, filled and sealed inside the 3D pouches • The same machine can be used to fill Doy Pack/Stand Up Pouches; 3 Side Seal Pouches and Normal Zipper pouches as well The features of the Multi-Lane Automatic Linear Pick - Fill & Seal Machine are: • Fully Automatic Linear Pick Fill Seal Machine is a continuous machine designed for the efficient packaging of various products like Tea, Sugar, Salt, Granular products etc • The machine is PLC controlled with touchscreen HMI, making it operator friendly • Five Servo integrated to achieve highperformance • Versatile machine where the pouch sizes can be changed easily • Accurate Pick and Place Mechanism for exact position of the pouch • Unique filling system • Compact design with small footprint • Easy operation • Low maintenance

Commenting about the features of the new Four Lane Automatic Linear Pick - Fill & Seal Machine; UFLEX LPFS-4T Mr Ajay Tandon, President and CEO, engineering business, Uflex said: “This sophisticated machine is a classic example of Interventional Engineering by Uflex. Our customers i.e. packers approached us with the pain point of not being able to rapidly fill the 3D / flat bottom pouches. Narrow mouth opening of pouches in the conventional PFS machines was actually bringing down the productivity of the packers. Some of them even filled up the pouches manually. It took us 15 months to engineer this machine at our plant in Noida. The Four Lane Automatic Linear Pick - Fill & Seal Machine; UFLEX LPFS-4T owing to the multitude of benefits beholds huge potential not only in India but overseas as well. We exhibited UFLEX LPFS-4T at International PackTech India, from 15 to 17 December 2016 at Mumbai.” Expressing delight at the launch of the Four Lane Automatic Linear Pick - Fill & Seal Machine; UFLEX LPFS-4T, Mr Ashok Chaturvedi, Chairman and Managing Director, Uflex said: “The flexible packaging industry has evolved rather rapidly and now one can see the most innovative packaging solutions on the retail shelf. Flat Bottom Pouches or the 3D Pouches are one of the most brilliant and efficient examples of modern day packaging. Owing to the unavailability of a suitable filling machine, the magic of these brilliant 3D pouches was somewhat restrained. I am glad that my Engineering Team at Uflex has created a machine that can ensure wider mouth openings of flat bottom pouches ensuring easy filling at much higher speeds and output rates. This in turn will surely give boost to the sale of flat bottom pouches. Having a stellar pouch without an appropriate filling machine is just like having a great car without tyres. Being the fully integrated flexible packaging materials and solution company that Uflex is, we always ensure that path breaking packaging designs are complimented with the associated packing/filling machines too. This is a Uflex Promise.”

Print Factory opts for Kodak Flexcel NX Wide Hybrid System
Print Factory located in Sheshadripuram, Bangalore, is always looking to the future. Several years ago, the company overhauled its pre-press operations with investments in Kodak thermal CTP technology and workflow solutions. Following this move, according to Sudhir M K, Director, Print Factory, press room efficiency increased, allowing Print Factory to add a second four-colour press to increase commercial jobs such as brochures, annual reports, and books. Recently, Print Factory acquired a printer that specializes in pre-liner printing for the corrugated packaging industry, giving Print Factory a foothold into India’s burgeoning packing sector. With a turnover of $24.6 billion and a growth rate of 13% to 15% annually, the Indian packaging industry is expected to reach $32 billion by 2020. And according to a recent Mckinsey report, there will be a ten-fold increase in India’s middle-class population by 2025, which will further trigger the consumption of packaging materials. This will bring another growth spurt to packaging, says the Mckinsey report, which also notes that the country needs more packaging professionals. As Print Factory prepares to take advantage of this growing packaging market, they have
integrated a Kodak Flexcel NX Wide Hybrid system alongside the two newly acquired offset machines. This new set-up will enable Print Factory to print directly on corrugated sheets. It will also deliver significant cost savings compared to their previous reliance on film with the introduction of thermal plates. With strong cost pressures in corrugated packaging segment, Kodak Flexcel technology delivers superior quality and lower and cost-effective post-print results on lower grade liners. Kodak has commercially released new extensions to its popular KODAK FLEXCEL NX System. The new KODAK FLEXCEL NX
Wide System and a new range of KODAK FLEXCEL NX Digital Flexo Plates (Kodak Flexcel NXC plates) extend to the corrugated sector the print excellence customers expect from Kodak flexographic solutions. FLEXCEL NX System allows pre-press providers and printers deliver highly impactful quality packaging and streamline production costs. Along with technologies such as KODAK SQUARESPOT Imaging Technology and KODAK DIGICAP NX Patterning, corrugated producers will now be able to take advantage of a solution that enables expanded tonal range, higher line screens, more efficient ink transfer and improved print quality on lower grade boards.

Constant growth and high customer satisfaction pushed Omet to invest in a new production facility, to better cope with growing amount of orders and considerable increase in business turnover.
“Despite the economy is still recovering from the crisis – stated Marco Calcagni, Omet Commercial Director – our company continues its growth, creating value and offering employment. The market has been providing us with important orders, both quantitatively and qualitatively, which is a boost in confidence for the future.”

Mondi wins WorldStar 2017 awards for its IceBox and Queen Display Mondi, international packaging and paper producer, received global recognition for its two packaging solutions at the WorldStar competition. The winning designs come from two facilities within the Mondi Corrugated Packaging business segment – Mondi Grünburg in Austria for IceBox and Mondi Tire Kutsan in Turkey for Queen Display. IceBox, the winning design in the Food category from Mondi Grünburg, is a promising concept for transporting temperature-sensitive or chilled foods and beverages. By retaining its 100% recyclable character, the packaging uses a special paper surface treatment – Mondi’s Paratherm barrier solution – which enhances the performance of the corrugated box for use in cooling and freezing conditions. As a result, it supports the cooling effect of ice packs or crushed ice and retains any meltwater, offering end customers an opportunity to enjoy a cold beverage or snack on-the-go. Queen Display, the winning design in the Point of Sale category, designed by Mondi Tire Kutsan, is an innovative and environmentally-friendly concept for the floriculture sector. Queen display prevents damage to delicate flowers during shipment and also works as an attractive display solution at point of sale. This way the corrugated packaging fulfils two different functions. In addition to eliminating flower waste during shipment, the packaging uses 51% less material when compared to standard options. Jan Blankiewicz, Product Innovation Manager, at Mondi Corrugated Packaging, commented: “We are proud that two of our designs received acknowledgment from the international jury at the WorldStar Awards 2017 as they underline the potential of paperbased material in developing innovative packaging solutions. For us this award is a proof of our passion for developing cuttingedge solutions in a sustainable way.” In addition to these reputable awards, Mondi Grünburg has won two other competitions this year for packaging design excellence – Wellpappe Austria Awards and Austrian State prize “Smart Packaging”. For Mondi Tire Kutsan the WorldStar Award 2017 is its third this year, following successes at the

Stepping into the industrial printing area “Adding value to print jobs is the key to survival” Choosing the Agfa Graphics solution
Large Japanese commercial and sign & display printing company King Printing recently installed a Jeti Mira wide-format printer from Agfa Graphics to support its plans to be more active in the industrial printing area. Here is an interview with Yoshio Ushijima, President King Printing.
100 years of history King Printing set up business with handwriting signboards for movie theatres. In 2017, it will celebrate its 100th anniversary.
Main activities We are a large offset and inkjet printing company, headquarted in Osaka, and we are doing mainly wide-format printing jobs, in particular poster printing.
Future plans and targets Although we are pretty confident that the poster printing market will continue to exist, we need to create new, recurrent business in order to keep growing. Adding value to print jobs is the key to survival in this business. Therefore, I want to produce prints that are not meant for simple consumption, but that are memorable. I cannot reveal much yet, but we are planning to use the new Jeti Mira for some brand new projects in the printing market…
King Printing President, Mr. Yoshio Ushijima
Of course, we will continue to make strong efforts in the field of poster printing such as POP, displays etc. to keep our foothold in the market. It will be very challenging for us to step into the industrial field, but we have to do this. There is a famous quote in business that says that maintaining the status quo is dangerous. Our company has to keep changing to survive. That is what successful companies do; you can’t live of your past accomplishments. Trying market conditions can offer a change for investments. While the entire industry has cold feet, we will take the next step. I can do this because our employees have supported the company over the years to make it grow. This investment is given back to them.
The Jeti Mira gave us new options. Agfa made a clear proposal on the solution they would be offering us, and they made it clear what we would gain by introducing this new printer. It is very important to me that a supplier has a clear vision. Agfa indeed has a very similar vision to ours, so I was sure that they are not like the other manufacturers. That is why we opted for them. In addition, I expect Agfa to keep developing new solutions in the field of inkjet printing – UV or not.
The Jeti Mira experience so far This printer is in fact quite unique: It is able to do things that competitive products cannot. First of all, the Jeti Mira can print primer, which enables us to print boards that were difficult to print on before due to adhesion issues. Moreover, we can do relief printing by applying the white ink in thick layers. This supports certain designs. Last but not least, it is fast and delivers high-quality prints.
Memorable prints – Decorating the Byodo-in temple in Kyoto Recently, King Printing had the opportunity to take part in the restoration of the shumidan (a dais for a Buddhist image) at the Byodo-in temple in Uji-city, Kyoto. “This project was part of our advance into the industrial printing field. I told my staff to take on this job as if we were creating a new cultural asset, not just restoring one. I hope these kinds of jobs will continue to come in, as contributing to our country’s cultural assets will enhance our company image.”

‘World’s first’ 3D printed pop-up retail store 3D print specialist OMUS creates the marvel for Louis Vuitton using Massivit 3D Printing. Massivit 3D Printing Technologies has announced that its customer, OMUS, a specialist 3D print provider in Australia, has constructed what is believed to be the world’s first 3D printed pop-up retail store on behalf of luxury fashion brand, Louis Vuitton. The eye-catching 9m-wide, 10m-long and 2.7m-high (29.5ft x 32.8ft x 8.85ft) structure was created using OMUS’ recently-installed Massivit 1800 3D Printer in just 18 days and is currently capturing the gaze of shoppers at Sydney’s Westfield shopping centre. According to Robert Grosso, co-owner of Melbourne-based, OMUS, working with Louis Vuitton’s design agency, Gold Coast Displays, the company was tasked to produce a statement megastructure that would serve as an attention-grabbing platform for the premiere of the brand’s latest menswear collection. Just three weeks remained from the point at which OMUS received the confirmation to go-ahead until the date of the pop-up store’s grand opening.
be tolerated. The entire display was then finished in chrome mirror self-adhesive vinyl, adorned with distinctive Louis Vuittondesigned animal prints matching the theme of the menswear collection on display.
“Having received the design brief, we essentially needed to produce a visuallystunning, structurally-sound outlet that could endure sustained use in a busy public environment – and in record time,” he explains. “Given the complexity of the design and the short turnaround time, 3D printing was really the only viable production method available to us.”
“Louis Vuitton, and its design agency, were delighted with the finished result; it surpassed their expectations in terms of its striking visual appeal and realised their original vision to radiate the opulence of the company’s safari-inspired men’s line,” says Grosso. “Their staff are also happy to explain to visitors how 3D printing was pivotal to the project and how it encapsulates Louis Vuitton’s innovation and fresh-thinking attitude.”
Dual print head capability accelerates production
Enhancing competitiveness with designs that wow
To assist with the magnitude of the print job, OMUS enlisted the help of another Massivit 3D customer, Sydney-based Composite Images. Utilising the Massivit 1800’s unrivalled print speed of up to 35cm / 14’’ per hour, two printers were deployed around the clock, each using dual print heads to produce two hollow panels simultaneously. A total of 30 panels were 3D printed and would serve as the walls of the pop-up outlet.
As an early adopter of Massivit 3D’s technology, OMUS has established itself as a pioneer of large format 3D printing within the retail, staging, events and architectural design arenas. According to Grosso, one of the main factors in integrating 3D printing into the company’s business model was to enhance its competitive edge and differentiate its proposition from other sign and display suppliers.
Once created, OMUS placed solid support ‘ribs’ in each panel to ensure the weight of the huge 243m3 (797ft3) structure could
“Our customers are always seeking ways to push the boundaries and create applications with wow factor,” Grosso explains. “Our
Massivit 1800 3D Printer is fundamental to achieving this. From a business perspective, the very nature of building from the groundup with little support material, enables us to replicate our customer’s complex designs without the need for costly manufacturing tools, which presents a win-win scenario.” The Louis Vuitton pop-up retail store will be open at Sydney’s Westfield shopping centre until 18th December.
