Uniqueness catches on Kunst- und Werbedruck is reinventing itself as a full-service provider, focusing on quality and tight delivery schedules.
It is worth it for companies to question their business model, to start over, and then start again. That’s was happened at Kunst- und Werbedruck (K + W) in Bad Oeynhausen. In late 2013, K + W said goodbye to web offset printing and a hodgepodge of different presses. Since then, it has embraced sheetfed offset printing in 3B format and a high level of vertical integration. As a partner it chose Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg), which had already installed the first Speedmaster XL 105 in 2012 and then in 2014 installed a second Speedmaster XL 106, this time as a perfecting press, as well as several finishing presses. “We offer ‘everything from a single source’ and ‘does not work – does not exist’ solutions,” says Stefan Belte in describing the new approach. Together with Frank Pieper, he has been working as a Managing Director at K + W since 2010. The recipe for success? “We take on any challenge, whether technical, economical, organizational or logistical, and always deliver something special.”
“Otherness” as a brand
With Hycolor Multidrive, the inking units can be washed while the printing plates are changed in parallel with AutoPlate XL 2 via the main drive – and rubber blankets and impression cylinders are washed at the same time as the makeready process.
More than 100 employees produce mostly complex and sophisticated printed matter such as brochures, catalogs, books, calendars, and leaflets for mainly national customers. The company often supplies the market leaders from industry, trade, banks, the
automotive industry, the pharmaceuticals industry, and publishing, all of whom are looking for something special – which they find at K + W. The printed objects are becoming more and more complex, and customers want visual and tactile stimuli. “For example, we are seeing a renaissance in traditional catalogs; the runs are shorter, but demand for language versions and embellishments is up. The delivery dates are getting ever tighter,” confirms Frank Pieper. Belte and Pieper went on the offensive once more to be able to implement all this even better and more economically, and this year invested in a full package from Heidelberg worth more than € 9 million. The package consists of a new Suprasetter 106 CtP platesetter with fully automatic 106 G pallet loader, two Speedmaster XL 106 presses, and the Prinect Business Manager for networking the existing Prinect workflow components with an MIS system. K + W uses printing plates and coatings from the Saphira range and also trusts service offerings like Service 36plus with remote service and e-call for high press availability. “Having a partner that covers as many of our requirements as possible is important to us. With Heidelberg, we negotiate on an equal footing and deal with plain-spoken and fair partners,” explains Stefan Belte.

World’s first for exceptional printed products The first of the two new printing presses, a ten-colour Speedmaster XL 106 with perfecting and a speed of up to 18,000 sheets per hour, was installed in February 2017. It is the first press in the world to be partially equipped with the innovative Hycolor Multidrive inking unit drive – in the 1st, 5th, 6th, and 10th printing units. Normally, the system is used in all printing units in presses for packaging printers. K + W had already put itself forward for the field test as a commercial printer because the order spectrum matched exactly. Hycolor Multidrive constitutes a major customer benefit here, since the inking unit can now be operated independently of other activities and makeready processes on the press. With Hycolor Multidrive, the inking units can be washed while the printing plates are changed in parallel with AutoPlate XL 2 via the main drive – and rubber blankets and impression cylinders are washed at the same time as the makeready process. This is particularly interesting when using several spot colours or a print varnish. Parallel

washing and makeready operations are possible while the next job is being prepared, which leads to extremely short makeready times and guarantees short delivery times for customers. At K + W, colour changes already account for 30 to 40 percent of the time expenditure, and the time saved is correspondingly high. Intensive or deep cleaning of the inking unit can also be performed here in parallel, which leads to shorter makeready times and better washing results. Another benefit is the intelligent shutdown of printing units when they are not in use. This simplifies the work tremendously and offers a high level of operating comfort. “The absence of a colour assignment in a printing unit means that the printing unit that is not needed is automatically shut down without user intervention, protecting the rollers,” reports Artur Benz, Technical Manager at K + W. Hycolor Multidrive is integrated in the Prinect Press Center XL 2 machine control station and is controlled there by the Intellistart 2 software. Intellistart 2 always calculates the fastest and best possible
use of Hycolor Multidrive for the makeready processes. The Wallscreen XL displays all makeready processes at a glance, thereby supporting the operator.
Timed processes The field test for the new Speedmaster XL 106-10-P, which is equipped with the automatic AutoPlate XL 2 plate changer and the Inpress Control 2 colour and control system, also tested and implemented the Push to Stop concept – insofar as possible with the current MIS software. This involves production processes that control themselves and run automatically, and operators who only have to intervene when necessary or not at all. The aim is to increase net productivity to a previously unknown level. “With Push to Stop and networking via the Prinect module from prepress, press, and postpress, we can fully exploit the potential of the press, even if the new MIS, the Business Manager, is fully installed,” says Artur Benz in summing up his experiences. Both short and long runs can now be processed quickly and productively. “The press has fully met our expectations. In particular I’d like to emphasize the high level of user-friendliness with Hycolor Multidrive

and the short makeready times.” With one simple mold change within a print job, all eight plates are changed within 80 seconds without the need to wash any blankets. Recently, a job with a run of 750 sheets in two languages and 16 signature sections with 256 plates was printed in three hours. The totalizer was already showing 48 million printed sheets in November. The second new press – an eight-colour Speedmaster XL 106 with coating – will be installed in early 2018. Together with the existing five-colour Speedmaster XL 105 with coating, K + W believes it is well positioned for the future. “We can calmly handle our utilization peaks in production volumes when printing sometimes involves web offset jobs,” confirms Frank Pieper. “Quality and speed are the number 1 priority for us, and we also have the customers in our company for over a week when it comes time to approve the job.” All the better, therefore, that the processes are transparent and timed. “The new production sequences means that pallets now move in one direction only in our company. This makes us much more efficient and powerful than before,” explains Stefan

Belte. The complete Workflow connection with the Prinect Business Manager is set to be implemented in 2018, in order to further expand the business orientation with key figures and controlling. A corresponding software field test with Heidelberg has just been signed for this. Discussions are also in progress about a new five-colour Speedmaster XL 106 with coating as well as a new Stahlfolder TH 82 P folding machine, which can process the high output from the new printing presses thanks to its high level of automation.
“We will stand for something special, something sophisticated in the future also, and produce high-quality and complex print media with a pronounced depth of vertical integration for medium and long runs,” says Stefan Belte in outlining the company strategy. “We want to increase customer loyalty and adapt our services even more to the market, for example with extended logistics and by positioning ourselves as a general contractor overall.”

IITians’ start-up converts diesel soot to ink Delhi start-up, Chakr Innovation has found a unique solution in printing inks to the problem of air pollution caused by diesel smoke. The idea to convert diesel smoke to ink came when one of the co-founders of Chakr saw a diesel engine having blackened the wall near its installation. Three IIT graduates, Kushagra Srivastava, Prateek Sachan and Arpit Dhupar started researching about the problem and found that about 16 to 18 percent of particulate matter PM2.5 in India is generated from stationary diesel power generators. The company invented a device which can be retrofitted on a diesel generator. The device can capture 90 percent of particulate matter
emission. The startup launched their first pilot in 2016 and won the ‘University of Chicago’s Urban Labs India Challenge’ in 2016. The retrofit device invented by Chakr can be fitted on to an exhaust pipe of the engine and the captured pollutant – black carbon, is processed and converted into inks and paints. What’s more, the company also offered service to the customers in return of the black carbon. The ink product is called POINK (Ink from Pollution). It can be used in numerous applications for textile printing, cardboard printing, painting etc. One of the clients for POINK is Dell Corporation. Because of its pollution angle and environmental sustainability, the company has been able to get a premium price for its inks. The startup is working with leading names like BSNL, MTNL, ATC and Reliance and also has a strategic collaboration with BOSCH
and Indian Oil for product research and development. The device can control pollution without hampering the performance of the engine or environment. The health benefit to those operating the engines is one of the key advantages of the device. With pollution being one of the key health hazards of modern developed society, the device presents a noble relief to the common people. Apart from receiving accolades from the government, industry and common people, the innovation has also been awarded by many organisations in the country and abroad.

Eastman Heritage of Giving “A rich man should be given credit for the judgment he uses in distributing his wealth, rather than in the amount he gives away.” – George Eastman In the early 1900s, Eastman was one of the richest men in the world, and was gripped by a powerful desire to put his funds to work in the rest of society. Over the next two decades, he would give away more than anyone of his generation except John D. Rockefeller and Andrew Carnegie. In current dollars, his gifts totaled in the range of $2 billion. Eastman’s roots in philanthropy date back to his grandparents, aunts and uncles who participated in the Underground Railroad. Committed to education, his father founded a college that would serve as a model for later business schools. Eastman made his own early donations at Sunday school to those less fortunate than he. As much as any other large American donor, he worked hard at being a wise giver. “A rich man should be given credit for the judgment he uses in distributing his wealth, rather than in the amount he gives away,” he stated in a rare public speech. Eastman distributed the vast bulk of his fortune before he died in 1932, and bequeathed the remaining $25 million or so by last will and testament. Rather than hiring a professional manager or teams of functionaries to distribute his largess, Eastman did it himself, with very personal attention. He researched carefully, often acted without being asked, and made
all of his own decisions. In addition to giving them money, he actively advised, guided, and assisted groups and causes. One of the reasons he concentrated his giving in the Rochester area was so he could personally supervise the execution, completion, and operation of his good works. And Eastman ultimately had as much effect as any giver in America. His $51 million in gifts made the University of Rochester into a top-tier school, and the $20 million he gave to MIT built its campus and reoriented it from local commuter facility to international leader. His adoption of MIT (and much of the rest of his philanthropy) was carried out anonymously, so many Americans then and now lacked awareness of his huge philanthropic footprints. In addition, Eastman gave hefty sums, without solicitation, and loyally over the decades, to black colleges like Tuskegee, Hampton, Howard and Meharry. He also acted close to home, for instance creating a model school for the black children living around his hunting camp in North Carolina. Between his college and lower-school gifts, George Eastman became the largest donor to African-American schooling of his era. He was also a pioneer in medical philanthropy, with an ahead-of-his-time
Kodak India distributes 5,000 notebooks as part of “Print for Good” Program Kodak employees traveled to a rural village in India to show their commitment to childhood literacy as part of the company’s “Print for Good” campaign. Employee volunteers visited the small town of Nilmat, and upon arrival, were welcomed into a cluster of huts and a part-brick-partthatched building. The group of visitors were then entertained with folk songs, dancing, and speeches by the students. Employees were also presented with mementos bearing the local Warli art form, which depicts tribal social life through paintings.

emphasis on prevention. He single-handedly created the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, and established many dental clinics serving children around the globe, focused in cities where Kodak had factories such as London, Paris, Stockholm, Brussels and Rome. He also built extensive hospital complexes throughout Rochester (which he identified as ‘the town I am interested in above all others,’ and where 2/3 or his public gifts were centered.) George Eastman’s most personal gift benefited Rochester and the world alike. He loved to share beautiful music with others and made many innovative efforts to expose everyday citizens to great performances. He created elaborate music instruction programs for the community at large, purchased hundreds of instruments for children, and subsidized the best ensembles to play in Rochester. With intense attention to detail, Eastman painstakingly created the Eastman Theater into which he introduced imaginative programming. Every week in his 3,500-seat auditorium a fine orchestra was assembled to accompany the screening of silent films. The Eastman School of Music, which he created from scratch was named the best graduate conservatory in the nation 12 years after Eastman’s death. He also founded the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra (now Eastman Rochester Philharmonic). Ultimately, with wealth, Eastman made unprecedented donations to society through support of education, health and the arts – but also directly to employees of Eastman Kodak company. He was a pioneer in creating sick pay, disability compensation, pensions and hospital benefits. After one highly successful stock offering he set aside a large sum from his personal proceeds and had it distributed to 3,000 startled Eastman Kodak employees with a note reading: “This is a personal matter with Mr. Eastman and he requests that you will not consider it as a gift, but as extra pay for good work.” It was one of the first corporate bonuses.

Indian buyers group will debut TPF 2018 The 9th Shanghai International Digital Printing Industry Exhibition TPF 2018 will be held in Shanghai New International Expo Center from April 19 to 21, 2018. The exhibition will be held by UBM China and Shanghai Long Yang Convention and Exhibition co-sponsored exhibition area of 23,000 square meters. As one of the most influential international digital printing exhibitions in Asia, TPF 2018 is expected to welcome over 9500+ domestic and overseas viewers and 16,000+ visitors. Visitors from India, Japan, South Korea, the United States, Vietnam, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Thailand, Italy, Turkey, Brazil and more than 50 countries. PF 2018 will join with Fibre2Fashion (F2F) to promote it in countries including India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Vietnam, Myanmar and other textile countries. With the help of F2F’s headquarters in India, TPF 2018 will be the first to be launched in India. The key areas in India are textile and printing and dyeing industries such as Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka and Gujarat. In addition, the Indian Buyer Group organized by F2F will make a collective appearance of TPF 2018 to provide exhibitors an opportunity to meet directly with quality buyers in India. India is a diverse country with rich embroidery and printing technologies. In the very early days, cotton weaving and dyeing technology developed very well, and then further developed on silk. There are many printing technologies in India, of which screen printing is an important one, with the main benefits of being highly costeffective and suitable for mass production. Another handmade woodcut printing is a well-known works of art, it is handed down from generation to generation. The important trade center for such printed textiles is Ahmedabad. There are also several well-known cotton product printing centers in the south. Early in the printing and dyeing industry in Rajasthan, woodcut printing was more common in Gujarat at the time, providing rich and vivid colours, so it became more popular and the process of creating colours was simple. Madhya Pradesh also has a different typographic style that reflects its culture. When the digital printing technology into and development,
India’s printing technology has also gradually changed the pattern. With the “Belt and Road” and “the Bangladesh, China, India and Myanmar Economic Corridor,” its radiation will drive the joint development of the three major economic sectors of South Asia, Southeast Asia and East Asia and bring about new opportunities for foreign trade cooperation. Southwest China, eastern India, Myanmar and Bangladesh are relatively underdeveloped, with limited cooperation at the state and provincial levels. The “economic corridor” will be built up to the national level and the linkage between the three most important economic regions in Asia will be promoted through the extension of the four countries.
In recent years, many domestic enterprises have responded positively to the “One Belt and One Road”, stepped up the overseas market expansion and accelerated the “Made in China” going global. TPF 2018 has a global perspective and aims to bring more overseas buyers to China through numerous overseas media and host UBM overseas networks and resources so that exhibitors can meet with multinational buyers face to face and reach cooperation without going abroad. More trade show pavilions at the scene, for the exhibitors and visitors to build a one-on-one discussion platform to promote the industry in-depth exchanges to help exhibitors understand the real needs of different buyers, resulting in higher added value.

HP to bring 3D printing technology to India in Q1, 2018
Hewlett Packard Inc has announced that it would launch its 3D Printing technology in India in the first quarter of 2018. HP will be eyeing the vast and emerging $12-trillion manufacturing industry although it launched the technology about two years ago globally. According to Sumeer Chandra, Managing Director, HP Inc India, the company is in discussions with various industry stakeholders to help them begin 3D printing in India.
Also called additive manufacturing, 3D printing assembles objects layer by layer, and can be done using materials such as plastic, resin, or metal. The Multijet Fusion 3D, the HP range of printers to be launched in India, will print plastic parts — body implants, car panels, and manufacturing prototypes. Globally, HP is working with companies like Johnson & Johnson, BMW, Nike and others to print 3D products ranging from those for health and medical implants etc. to metal products to plastic products and models.
The printers to be launched in India are already being sold in Australia, China and Japan. The starting price for such devices is $100,000 (approx. Rs 65 lakh), although it’s yet to be known the range specified for Indian market. HP will mainly be focusing on commercial 3D printing, healthcare products and automobile components and the 3D printer range will be available pan-India. HP’s Multi Jet Fusion (MJF) 3D printing technology will be playing a vital role in pushing 3D printing further from prototyping to developing manufacturing components. The solution will “deliver superior quality physical parts up to 10 times faster and at half the cost of current 3D print systems,” Chandra said. The HP Jet Fusion 3D Printing Solution offers simplified workflow and reduced cost for radical prototyping, delivery of final parts manufacturing with breakthrough economics. In a bid to accelerate 3D printing for industrial production, HP Inc recently announced integration of its ‘Multi Jet Fusion’ 3D printer with Siemens’ Additive Manufacturing (AM) software module. HP has also announced the expansion of its 3D-printing portfolio with “HP Multi Jet Fusion 4210 platform”.

Anne Gabriel from Marine Stewardship Council highlighted the potential for sustainable seafood in the Asia-Pacific. She said that 1 billion people in the region rely on fish as their primary animal protein, whilst over 80% of the world’s fisheries are located here. The organisation aims to take 20% share of global marine catch by 2020, and a third by 2030. In another paper, Andy Sweetman from Futamura made the case for bioplastics. Highlighting the environmental impact of plastic packaging (8 million tonnes going into the ocean each year), he called for greater adoption of plant-based packaging materials by food and beverage companies. Will Marg, CEO of Organic Systems and Solutions, gave an update on sustainability certification schemes. She believes the
future is with traceability, block-chain measures, and new technologies.
Major obstacles in the Asian organic food industry Some of the major obstacles in the Asian organic food industry were debated in the second session. In the opening seminar, Amarjit Sahota from Ecovia Intelligence showed that Asia had become a leading producer of organic foods, yet consumption was lagging behind Europe and North America in spite of the region having some of the most affluent consumers. Tan Jian from OFDC China said that milk & dairy was one of the fastest growing sectors of the Chinese organic food market. Standards inconsistency and labelling issues were cited as the major pitfalls when entering the Chinese market. Organic and Beyond Corporation and Sresta Natural

BioProducts presented as case studies of leading organic food enterprises in China and India respectively. Vitoon Panyakul discussed the key issues Asian companies face when developing local markets in Asia, whilst Andrew Monk from Australian Organic gave insights into consumer behaviour. When debating the future outlook for organic products, some panellists believed Asia will show high growth in the coming decade. One speaker called into question the role of certification, since the region has a large and disparate number of organic standards. Duncan McCance from The Frank Food Company kicked off the second day with a keynote on healthy diets. The chef is attempting to re-connect Singaporean consumers to agriculture with its home delivery scheme. Certified organic vegetables are picked in neighbouring Indonesia and delivered to consumer households within 12 hours. To encourage home cooking, the company provides free recipes. Nielsen highlighted some of the health & wellness trends stimulating demand for organic and sustainable foods. Digital media is expected to play an important role in the future, helping consumers make healthy and sustainable choices. Callie Tai, CEO and Co-Founder of the leading health & organic food shop in Malaysia JustLife, shared her story in encouraging consumers to lead a healthy lifestyle. Education plays a key role, with the company arranging organic farm visits, an Earth day carnival, and campaigns for earth-friendly beauty products. SaladStop! was presented as a case study of a chain of healthy food diners. Set up in November 2009, the Singapore-based company has set up almost 40 outlets in various Asian locations. It is using sustainable and traceable ingredients in its healthy food options. Eugene Wang, Founder and CEO of Sophie’s Kitchen, called for more plantbased proteins in Asian diets. The company
is using konjac flour, algae, and yellow peas to create seafood alternative products. The dietician Ujjwala Baxi discussed the paradox of healthy food choices; she believes the best way to encourage healthy foods was incremental changes in consumer behaviour. The final session discussed the growing use of sustainable food ingredients. Givaudan covered the sustainability issues associated with flavourings, whilst Puifung Leung from Fairtrade Hong Kong outlined the growing prospects for fairtrade products in the Asian region. Kalli Swaik from Ben & Jerry’s Asia gave insights into the sustainable ingredients used in the company’s ice-cream products; apart from fairtrade sugar and cocoa, the company has a sustainable dairy programme involving 300 farmers. The iconic ice-cream brand is using life-cycle analyses to address its environmental and social impacts. PureCircle described the growing use of stevia as a sustainable alternative to sugar in food and beverage applications.
Bhutan – the poster child of sustainability One of the liveliest and inspiring seminars was given by H.E. Lyonpo Yeshey Dorji, Bhutan Minister of Agriculture and Forests. The small Himalayan country is often cited as the ‘poster child’ of sustainability; it is one of the leading advocates of organic farming, a major producer of clean energy and is carbon positive. According to the minister, the country faces many challenges when combining sustainable farming and environmental stewardship because of its mountainous terrain. He also said that all government projects are screened partly on Gross National Happiness (GNH) to see how they contribute to health & mental well-being.
sustainable foods? What can be done to raise adoption rates of plant-based proteins and dairy alternatives? How can sustainable packaging be encouraged? How can awareness of environmental issues like deforestation, ocean pollution, and climate change be translated into ethical purchases? How can governments be encouraged to intertwine environmental / sustainable development with economic development? Some of these questions will be addressed in the next Asia-Pacific edition of the Sustainable Foods Summit, scheduled for 4-5th September 2018.
The Sustainable Foods Summit The aim of the Sustainable Foods Summit is to explore new horizons for eco-labels and sustainability in the food industry by discussing key industry issues in a high-level forum. is more and more oriented on flexography. We noticed that Chinese printers give more importance to UV flexo as an economical solution for medium and long runs. OMET has always played an extremely important role in this exhibition by presenting innovative ideas and concrete solutions expressly designed to meet customers’ needs. This edition saw an OMET X4 featuring a fully UV LED system. The number of “quality visitors” seemed to be higher than previous editions, as well as the number of companies from
the Asia-Pacific area. This trend confirms the relevant role of China as the main reference country, especially in terms of resources, consumables and service. It was an exciting exposition, which will bring us great payback in the next two years.” Vienna Deng, Phoseon Technology: “Our participation at Labelexpo Asia 2017 was a great success. Our visitors were highly interested in our new Firejet FJ601 LED solution for flexo press retrofitting. We see
a growing interest in UV LED technology for flexographic printing that allows users to increase press uptime, print on thinner substrates, reach a faster throughput and work in a safer environment.” Johnny Sha, UV Energy Science & Technologies Co Ltd: “Labelexpo Asia 2017 is the most influential stage in the label and digital printing industry. We have gained a great deal and it has helped us to raise our visibility.”

DS Smith double winner at the Oscar de l’Emballage 2017 G’Vine Grape Dots won in Transformation category & Combi 150R won in Production category. DS Smith recently won awards in two of the five categories of the “Oscar de l’Emballage”: the folding carton G’Vine Grape Dots won the award in the Transformation category and the machine Combi 150R in the Production category. The “Oscar de l’Emballage” ceremony rewards, each year, innovation in functionalities and technical know-how. It provides recognition within the dynamism of the packaging sector and is organised by Infopro Digital, the editor of Emballages Magazine. This year’s 62nd edition of the awards, led by Henri Saporta, chief editor of Emballages Magazine, was held in front of 330 people who gathered together in Paris at the Elysees Biarritz on November 27th. Over 100 applications were analysed by a jury of professionals from the sectors of packaging and conditioning. In order to classify the nominated products, five categories are used: Consumption, Transformation, Production, Environment and Promising. In the Transformation category, the jury selected the folding G’Vine Grape Dots box. This product was created for the “Maison” Villevert (Gin). It elegantly underlines the refined brand image with, on the top of the folding carton, selective varnish on the logo and, on the front face, in reference to the unique process of distillation of the G’Vine Floraison, a bunch of grapes. Drawn by the agency 5.5, the folding carton can be

personalised thanks to pre-cut holes on two of its sides, allowing the consumer to transform it into a unique creation! In order to guarantee the best protection of the bottle, the folding carton has been conceived in the shape of a bell with a smart locking system. In the Production category, the jury selected the new machine Combi 150R created by DS Smith Packaging Systems. Featuring one mandrel case former, one division inserter and one top sealer, the same machine can shape several different case formats. Customers can make boxes with 4, 6 or 8 sides – maximising the printable area for messaging – it can even create rounded corners. The machine can also produce shelf-ready open cases, such as those with a high back and low front, to better display products. The judging panel also nominated the manual version of the Made2Fit solution in the Transformation category. Made2Fit allows e-retailers to adapt the size of the packaging to the product it contains. Designed for small series, Made2Fit manual offers 39 combinations of parcels sizes. Using this
solution, the transporting of empty space is reduced to 80%, and potentially by 100% for certain products. Creating packaging that is the correct size allows us and our customers to reduce the operation and expedition costs. We gain stock space, we reduce labour costs and administration of orders, as well as decreasing the time needed for preparation and allowing for conditioning without additional inserts. It also reduces the amount products move during transit and so minimises the risks of damage.

The new world of labels: Finat event tackles the technical challenges The biennial FINAT Technical Seminar, is taking place 7-9 March 2018 in Barcelona. “The world is changing: growing geographically smaller through globalisation, and universally bigger via the clouds. In this complex value chain, the challenges that face participants at all levels today are massive. Our time-honoured print technologies have new young digital partners; new label decoration and finishing technologies; new substrates; new inks and curing methods and much more. On top of that, brand owners want just-in-time delivery, personalisation, and price restraint. How can we win in this multi-faceted arena?” asks Jules Lejeune, Managing Director of FINAT, the international label industry association. The biennial FINAT Technical Seminar, taking place 7-9 March 2018 in Barcelona, is always an excellent source of news of technical innovation; this year’s wide-ranging agenda – opened by FINAT President Chris Ellison – promises to deliver practical advice on how the industry, and label converters in particular, can achieve real results.
Andy Hobsbawm delivers the keynote It is particularly appropriate, in this day and age, that the programme will be launched by internationally-acclaimed keynote speaker Andy Hobsbawm, a pioneer in internet marketing, and co-founder and Chief Marketing Officer of IoT smart products platform EVRYTHNG, which can connect any consumer product to the web, as well as manage real-time data to drive applications. He will helpfully look at the technical side of the way in which smart products can transform brand relationships, business operations, and service experiences. Labels and packaging are just beginning to explore the available technologies – among them augmented reality, sensors, printed electronics, batch/SKU QR codes – that can make packaging and labels smart. With live solutions, Andy will show the audience how to answer the call and transform their labels into smart, digital assets.
topic for label converters today. Chris Ellison will share his personal experiences as MD of the growing OPM Group with the audience to provide a practical users’ guide to the challenges and pitfalls of choosing an MIS supplier. Then Jeroen van Bauwel, Director of Product Management for Xeikon, will explore digitalisation of the production processes – in other words, ‘doing things differently’; and Geert de Proost, Director Solutions Marketing for Esko, will look at the principles of workflow automation, and the many helpful improvements to productivity that it can deliver.

Flint Group introduces a new lightweight family of rotec sleeves and bridges Up to 65% weight reduction for easier handling; superior dimensional stability for faster press speeds; increased safety and efficiency in the press room. With increasing demand in the printing industry for equipment that enables more frequent and faster job changes on press, Flint Group introduces a new, lightweight family of rotec Sleeves and Bridges designed to increase press efficiency. The new rotec product line provides the same proven polyurethane coating that is well-known for its durability and solvent resistance in a series of sleeves and adapters that are lighter and easier to handle. The rotec Lightweight Premium Sleeve – a high performance, plate mounting sleeve offering weight savings up to 40% compared to similar premium sleeves – exhibits excellent dimensional stability for high printing speeds, making it particularly effective in the wide web printing sector. The key to its superior all-around performance is the combination of its light weight and ease of use coupled with the premium construction that provides added strength and stability. The sleeve is further enhanced with an aluminum end plate that seals the edges for extra protection against inks, cleaning liquids and humidity and provides optimum performance and longevity to the sleeve life. According to Bob Adler, Sales Director Flint Group, “Press operators find that the extremely low tolerances of these sleeves over time result in more consistent register accuracy, thereby delivering unparalleled print results. Presses can run faster with a tight tolerance product.” Adler further explains, “They are also less susceptible to damage and wear and tear over time, thereby having sleeves last a little longer in use.” The weight savings in press and mounter applications is further extended to the rotec ULW Bridge – an ultra-lightweight adapter offering up to 65% reduction in weight – a significant weight savings for improved safety and handling by press operators. The rotec ULW Bridge is suitable for all press widths,
and offers particular benefits where higher wall thicknesses are most commonly used, such as in cantilevered mounter applications and unusually large print applications, including corrugated pre-print. The rotec ULW Bridge construction is available in either the rotec Airo design, for systems with a dedicated air conduction system, or the rotec Unifit design, with a pass-through air conduction system, to work with virtually all types of air cylinders. Additionally, the rotec ULW Bridge can be custom-made with special features such as the rotec Eco Bridge Technology with a breathable metal ring which creates an air pillow for easier and faster mounting, or the rotec Omega Surface Technology for conductivity properties. Special end rings and air supply configurations are also available. To complete the lightweight family of sleeves and bridges, the rotec Atlas CFX Bridge offers superior construction in a lightweight sleeve designed to reduce press vibrations in high speed printing. The key to the premium performance lies in the carbon fiber reinforcement layer which lends superior strength and stability to the fiberglass base, which when coupled with the hard polyurethane outer coating provides maxium stability for extremely high print performance at high press speeds. The uniquely lightweight bridge is capped with aluminum end rings for added protection and support. Flint Group understands the industry requirements for products that accommodate more frequent job changes and increased efficiency as run lengths for print jobs continue to decline. The new lightweight family of rotec Sleeves and Bridges are just some of the latest solutions from Flint Group that make the work environment more productive and safe.

New Sustainable Packaging - longer preservation of food product without metallized materials and modified atmospheres. with metallized materials for snacks, resulting in products made from nonrenewable sources which are also very difficult to recycle.
Extending the shelf life of food is one of the challenges of the food sector. Currently, modified atmosphere processes are used in the case of meats and fresh food, as well as packaging including multilayer structures
In order to achieve environmentally sustainable packages allowing to preserve food in optimal conditions for longer period, AIMPLAS coordinates the project REFUCOAT. By means of the investigations that will be carried out in the project, innovative material based on biopolymers will be developed, thus replacing those currently used in food
packaging in the form of films and trays. Specifically, polyglycolic acid (PGA) is going to be combined with modified silica oxide in order to formulate a hybrid coating with oxygen and water vapour barrier properties. Furthermore, a new PLA grade from corn wastes will be developed, with better water vapour barrier values than commercial grades. These developments are going to be combined in order to create recyclable packages for chicken, cereals and snacks. In the project REFUCOAT a total of 12 partners from five countries take part. It is funded by the European Union, through the program H2020-BBI-JTI-2016 with grant number 74591.

The Global Initiative for Academic Network (GIAN) will focus on teaching a 3D and 4D additive manufacturing course, called Waste Management by Additive Manufacturing. The waste management by using waste for manufacturing through additive technology will help reduce carbon footprint along with producing valuable goods for human consumption. Additive manufacturing (AM), popularly known as 3D printing, is the next big thing in global industrial revolution. The technology
allows one to make customized products through a one-step process while avoiding key costs like those for tools or molds. The new course is the first of its kind in the region where the faculty members teaching it are from India (IIT, Kharagpur and GNDEC) and Italy. The course will offer students hands-on experience in using additive manufacturing and investment casting technology to manage several different kinds of waste, including, solid waste, e-waste and PSW (plastic solid waste). In addition to the new waste management course, a team of experts from GNDEC’s Production Engineering department have also developed feed stock 3D printing filament using only waste materials and graphene, which makes it possible to conduct electricity through the filament.
Engineering and local coordinator of the course said that waste management was the need of hour. Department of Science and Technology under ASEAN has allotted the research project Rs 98 lakh. The course was inaugurated by Dr. Buta Singh, Dean (Academics), MRS Punjab Technical University, Bhathinda. Dr. Surinder Bir Singh, Ex-Principal, GNDEC and Dr. R.S. Seehra, Ex-Principal, GNDEC were guests of honour. Dr. Sehijpal Singh, Principal welcomed the guests.
Fernando Fraternali, Professor, structural Mechanics, Department of Civil Engineering, University of Salerno, Italy said 3D and 4D printing techniques were being widely used for waste management. Fernando is actively involved in waste management projects. Dr Rupinder Singh, Professor, Production
