FROM THE EDITORS’ DESK Dear Readers, When one of the largest Commercial Printing players of India decided to step into Packaging Printing, it had just two things in mind – to utilize the existing extra capacity and do something new with a bigger market. With the opening of an exclusive unit adjoining their commercial printing unit at Gurgaon, Rave India can now meet the constantly growing demand for printed paperboard packaging. And with machines such as Emmeci SpA (Italy) rigid box making (the first machine of this configuration in India equipped to produce 25,000 complete cartons daily), BOBST (Switzerland) NovaCut for die cutting and a BOBST VisionFold folder gluer, Rave now offers mono cartons, multicolour corrugated cartons, window patching cartons on paper & board with special effects and impeccable rigid boxes for perfumes, shoes, sweets, gifts, puzzles and premium mobile box industry etc. The above machines perfectly compliment their earlier fleet of commercial Heidelberg printing machines led by the workhorse Heidelberg XL105, which is one of the priciest possessions of Rave and can run at a mind boggling speed of 18,000 sph. The lineup is flaunted by two, four, five and eight colour Heidelberg CD and SM 74 Offset machines. We had a talk with Mr. Shiv Bhatnagar on the latest happenings at Rave and the future plans. The cover story on Rave includes what Shiv has to share with our readers. For projects that rely on soft proofing alone, monitor accuracy becomes quite indispensable. The newly introduced BenQ Pro Graphics Series PG2401PT is a self-calibrating, professional colour management monitor which supports cloud-based colour proofing systems and features one-click proofing capabilities. The G7, Fogra and other ISO standard print quality certified monitor ensures the most accurate colour reproduction with 100% CMYK colour space and 99% Adobe RGB colour space. Delta E≤2 ensures colour accuracy throughout project workflow, providing viewers with the truest impression of the original image. Read the complete details on this efficient soft proofing solution in the inside pages. Quark Software has announced QuarkXPress® 10.1, a major update to QuarkXPress 10 that is available free of charge to all version 10 users. It delivers a powerful package of new and improved features based on customer feedback including 8000% zoom and dynamic guides. Bosch has further amplified its operations in India by inaugurating a Research & Technology Center and announces a planned investment of Rs.1200 Crores for 2014. The planned investment for the year will be directed towards capacity expansion across Bosch India like building of new facilities, augmentation of existing production lines and research & development. The inauguration of the new Research & Technology Center (RTC) in Bangalore is a step in this direction. At Interpack 2014, Bosch Packaging Technology presents the new CUT 1405 cartoning machine, a consistent advancement of the CUT 120 which has proven successful for many years. The new horizontal cartoning machine offers higher flexibility as well as the latest servo and safety technology at reduced costs. Also know about Esko Studio, a unique set of tools for 3D packaging design. Of interest to our readers would be a piece on development of new strategic initiatives by Labelling Association, FINAT to create a roadmap for success in a changing world. Rave takes a plunge into the Packaging stream India’s Commercial Printing stalwart, Rave India has stepped into the Packaging production business. Mr. Shiv Bhatnagar talks about their new venture and future plans. Established in 1993, Rave India is a name synonymous with quality and service in the Indian printing industry. Offering a wide range of printing services, Rave has one of the most modern set ups with latest technology machines and equipment with advanced automation. With thestate-of-the-art Heidelberg range of presses and in house pre-press and finishing capability, it meets the diverse printing needs of customers across the country. From high – tech pre-press equipment, latest printing machines and wide ranging post-press auxiliary machines, Rave has the optimum infrastructure.
Pre-Press
Since folders, gluers and die-cutters are everywhere, Rave decided on EMMECI which would benefit them in future by being different and capable of doing wonders with technologies like MET PET, being superior in terms of speed and quality as well as possibilities for several attachments.
Key Notes : > The Commercial printing giant diversifies into Packaging printing. > EMMECI is the first machine to shoulder the Packaging responsibility at Rave. > To gradually add advanced setup to the already established strong base.

With two CTP’s in the pre-press department, Rave accepts customer jobs as digital files in storage media or transferred directly through dedicated FTP server. The accomplished jobs get delivered through freight, courier or through FTP server as per customer preference.
Press One of the best equipped presses in north India, Rave houses some of the fastest presses at its facility. The setup includes a fleet of Heidelberg presses led by the workhorse Heidelberg XL-105, which is one of the priciest possessions of Rave and can run at a mind boggling speed of 18,000 sph. The CD’s and SM 74’s of two, four, five and eight colour offset machines handle the most intricate and sensitive quality colour print jobs with ease and perfection. Using world class technology, it offers various services that include designing, full colour printing and finishing of diverse printing products.
Post -Press The post press has facilities ranging from saddlestitching to thread sewing, spiral/ wiro binding, lamination, foil stamping and case making, Rave has a large bindery capable of all kinds of finishing using wide range of post press equipments. Another addition is the Sakurai Screen Printing machine – a marvel which gives design a completely new dimension by making it attractive with value added effects like UV, glitter, abrasive and aroma printing etc.
From Commercial to Packaging Backed with an experience of over two decades in the printing industry, Rave has now added the latest in Packaging. It has, to start with, installed a couple of high-end machines and equipment to cater to its Packaging customers. The machine lineup for Packaging segment is led by the global known brand EMECCI. We recently had a meeting with Mr. Shiv Bhatnagar, the young COO of the company and the person responsible for technical aspects of business at Rave. He shares with us their latest entry in Packaging and other details about the new business in particular and Rave in general. Rave started as a Pre-Press House today is one of the top players in the Commercial printing sphere in India. Quality and service are the characteristic identity associated with Rave in the printing market. They have etched a name for themselves with impeccable customer satisfaction and commitment towards quality. Always on a lookout for newer avenues to bring growth to their organization, the people at the helm of affairs have timely added

value added services in their business for the benefit of their customers. After excelling as the top Pre-Press House they diversified into Printing and became one of the largest Printing Presses of the country. With the world turned digital, the next step of growthwithin the related industry was Packaging. Consequently, Shiv along with his father Mr.Rakesh Bhatnagar and uncle Mr.BhuvneshKanwar, decided to take on the promising Packaging segment. When we ask Shiv about the decision, he says, “We were witnessing that Commercial was coming towards stagnation for us. We already had extra capacity and Commercial was not likely to fully utilize it in the near future. We were thinking about expanding that capacity for new applications and considering stepping into new segments of printing.” Rave had seven Heidelberg machines and six out of them were brand new bought after 2005. They surely had plenty of capacity which could be utilized for expanding into newer segments. “We had three fully-
equipped machines especially capable of as well as best suited for Packaging printing. These were two Heidelberg CD machines and the Heidelberg XL which is considered the best machine for Packaging,” says Shiv. That’s why converting for them in terms of printing was not a big issue, rather the major step, according to Shiv, was binding. “With this capacity, instead of investing furthermore in Book printing or Commercial printing, we thought why not do something which has a bigger market,” he adds. During the decision making process, they even considered installing something to produce hard-bound books. The idea got changed because electronic shift was becoming more evident in the books and Commercial sphere. “There were e-books starting coming up, there were brochures being replaced by soft copies available online and there were other similar developments,” says Shiv. “On the other hand, in the Packaging field there was no such issue. It was not only there to stay but the segment was having a huge potential because of retail boom. Eventually Packaging was chosen so that we can utilize our capacity as well as do something new,” he reveals.
With the opening of an exclusive unit adjoining their commercial printing unit at Gurgaon, they can now meet the constantly growing demand for printed paperboard packaging. And with machines such as Emmeci SpA (Italy) rigid box making (the first machine of this configuration in India equipped to produce 25000 complete cartons daily), BOBST (Switzerland) NovaCut for die cutting and a BOBST VisionFold folder gluer, Rave now offers Mono cartons, multicolour corrugated Cartons, window patching cartons on paper & board with special effects and impeccable rigid boxes for perfumes, shoes, sweets, gifts, puzzles and premium mobile box industry etc.The above machines compliment our earlier fleet of commercial Heidelberg printing machines. Other machines for the new Packaging setup Before joining the business, Shiv undertook training in Germany in two specialist areas; one was for Commercial and Book Printing and the other was focused on Packaging. The Packaging Training constituted four internships, three out of which were at Packaging Printers. “I learnt various concepts of Packaging there,” he says. When he joined Rave, at least for six months he kept researching how he could put those concepts to use in India. It put a lot of challenges before him because according to Shiv, “There is a marked difference between India and Germany vis-à-vis market, demand, work culture, products and value addition etc. What’s value addition in India was a routine for German printers. They were of the view that Indian printers were doing outdated things.”Shiv, along with his father, who was equally keen, worked on the project and decided on what and how they could start. “Initially we thought of putting three

Customers give a positive feedback “It entails a huge learning curve for us because it is the first of its kind machine in India. However, it’s not new for us – we already had the Heidelberg XL which was the first in South East Asia. The cartons we have produced recently have been of the finest quality and customers have given a very positive feedback to it. Within a few months of the installation, we have been able to get a good customer reaction,” emphasizes Shiv.
machines. We decided to install a Novacut with stripper because it could be extremely useful in the long run. We also planned a Visionfold, an EMMECI, Esko Workflow with RIP and Kongsberg table. The plans to investin other advanced machines including Asitrade were put off due to liquidity crunch caused by the economic slowdown;the economy was in very tough phase andwe decided to wait for the economy to flourish for heavy investment,” relates Shiv. The magnificent EMMECI gets complemented by impressive Sakurai When Rave was considering the entry into Packaging, they would get a general industry feedback that without value-addition, Packaging can’t succeed. The whole project of entry into Packaging field involved a lot of research work in market, machinery, customers, products etc. “The project took us whole two years which was way more than our other earlier projects. We actually wanted to start with a solid base to come in a big way,” reasons Shiv. We also thought about a six-coater UV,but we wanted the coater or UV to complement our machines because folder, gluers and die-cutters are everywhere. That’s why we decided on EMMECI which could benefit us in future by being diverse and capable of doing wonders with technologies like MET PET,” he explains. They had almost finalized MC 92 from EMMECI – a lower version than their present machine. However, they decided in favour of the present machine because of its future readiness, superiority in terms of speed and quality as well as possibilities for several attachments. The other machine with exciting capabilities

is the Sakurai flat-bed screen printing machine. The Sakurai at Rave is equipped with IR and UV lamps and can be termed as a true value addition machine with innumerable possibilities with UV coatings and UV inks. The value addition by way of velvet touch, smell, glitter, texture effect or different structure is over and above normal value addition through Spot UV. With addition of extra lamps one can increase the finishing possibilities even further. The superior value addition with Sakurai is done on occasional special occasions by Rave. The machine presently runs a 12-hour shift and Shiv, like with his other machines, soon plans a 24hour shift for the Sakurai. The machine has unique abilities and features which make it stand apart from many other machines available in the market. Should Rave have increased demand, Shiv says that he would rather go for another Sakurai machine. He is pretty impressed with the machine,“It is a phenomenal machine with extremely easy operation, low maintenance and user friendly handling. It can easily handle job runs ranging up to a couple of lakhs. We are using the machine only for very special effects. These types of effects are demanded only by a few high-end customers as there is also obvious cost difference in such effects from regular effects.” This machine complements the EMMECI at Rave. “The customer who can afford high end cartons – usually the EMMECI handles certain standardized rigid cartons – can certain pay for high-end effects of Sakurai. This way our total setup works in a streamlined workflow with all equipment complementing one another in one way or the other,” says Shiv.
The new Packaging unit of Rave spans around 70,000 sq.ft. with around 30,000 sq.ft. Post-Press area. At the new unit, Rave’s primary focus was to install an EMMECI and a Die-Cutter. They have a Bobst NovaCut Die-Cutter. They also have a VisionFold which complements the customers to have a one-stop solution for their key demands. The high-pressure glue guns option on the machine makes it a high capacity upgrade ready machine. “We are absolutely upgrade ready at any time to a system with automated features with least manual intervention like barcode reading, colour detection, missing text detection and carton rejection etc.,” informs Shiv.
Targeting quality with quantity in Packaging “We entered the Packaging stream when there were already big players present in the market. Our strategy was to first learn the market with minimal investment and customer feedback,” says Shiv. They studied customers’ Packaging demands and their best options to efficiently meet those demands. Starting with an EMMECI is a very advanced concept and Shiv says that the decision on more innovative setups shall be based on their observation of the market.“We want to eventually become a quantity as well as quality player. If it were quantity, we could have got it by increasing the number of Die-Cutters, Folders etc. But for quality we decided in favour of 100% quality-dedicated EMMECIthough we could have saved a lot with Chinese and a few other brands,”claims Shiv. Same holds true for their choice of other equipments; whenever they went for a Die-Cutter, they always opted it with stripper; their VisionFold is pre-equipped with provision for inspection system; and as opposed to general practice of installing only Workflow, they went for the Esko Workflow with RIP. “The main reason to go for Esko RIP was because of its many features which

backbone of their Packaging business and says, “It’s because of Commercial that we are into Packaging. We love Commercial printing and are dedicated towards meeting our customers’ demands,” he states.
are specifically designed for Packaging,” says Shiv. He adds that since it can read barcodes, missing text and give warnings online, it is a superior RIP. They have a dedicated Esko Kongsberg XE Cutting Table for sampling needs though occasionally used for Commercial products as well.
Future Vision Shiv wants to give the Indian market something which the European market is already doing. “We have to rise above from being just followers of European trends. All Printing fraternity should join hands so that we are known for our quality. Today what we hear is, ‘If you want volumes, go to India. There you will save costs.’ But if anybody wants quality, he goes elsewhere. This is a sad state. We should bring quality and technology adoption on par with Europe,” he recommends. With a present turnover around Rs.100 Cr.
this year, Shiv has a target of around Rs.175 Cr. for next year. He plans to take on the Rigid Box market in an aggressive way in future. He also wants to target Microflute. He says that an ideal setup for him would be to have two-three units. He wants a dedicated unit for Bobst Asitrade which he thinks is the best laminator in the world. The other two units would house five to six EMMECI machines, he says. Shiv is totally dedicated towards his new Packaging business. This doesn’t mean any less for his Commercial business - he has kept both the businesses separate. The setup is separate, the machines are different and both have their own plans and targets. Though he has no immediate plan to invest in his Commercial printing segment, he has specifically ensured that all the resources are put to best use in the best interest of his customers. Moreover, he considers the Commercial printing business as the
Shiv acts as the researcher for his company. He does his research on expansion projects, infrastructure, machine and equipment. He visits plants world over, sees equipment running in real life conditions, prepares his report and submits to his father and uncle who are at the helm of the decision making at Rave. Together they discuss the possibilities, the budget, the market and everything related and only then decide on policy matters. In other words, the technical aspects of the business are left to Shiv by his uncle and father. So, he is the key person at Rave who decides on the technical parts of the equipment, what features the machines should possess and what would be the target market and ROI etc. Today the Packaging business has taken a fine start with a solid base and a viable plan to guide it along the path. The marketing part will be handled by the existing team of over sixteen well trained people. Shiv doesn’t find any immediate need for appointing new people for his Packaging products because most of his customers have a mixed demand of Commercial and Packaging products. As the business gains pace and adapts more to the new shift, which he expects in a couple of months, he will be ensuring that his capacity quickly reaches optimum level and will also be working towards his set long-term targets. We wish him our best for his success!

Exports support the growth of the Italian graphic and paper machinery industry Acimga’s market survey for the IV quarter 2013-I quarter 2014 reveals optimism from market players but also emphasizes the stagnation of the domestic market. Exports are at risk for the growing eurodollar exchange rate and for Germany’s increasingly aggressive competition. It’s too early to talk about recovery. However, in a scenario where the domestic market is stagnant and international competition is increasingly aggressive, the predominant outlook for the graphic and paper machinery industry – one of the leading segments in Italy’s instrumental mechanics industry – is optimistic. Exports and export-generated revenues are growing, thus offsetting the protracted difficulties in the domestic market and keeping employment levels stable. In addition, expectations for the first quarter of this year are positive. This in sum is what emerged from the market survey performed by the research department of Acimga – the Italian manufacturers association of machinery for the graphic, converting and paper industry – with regard to market performance in the IV quarter 2013 and forecasts for the first quarter 2014. Acimga represents a sector producing over € 2 billion in revenues, 83% of which are generated by exports; it employs 7,000 people in about 150 companies, 90% of which are small- and medium-size. The qualitative market survey, conducted on a representative sample generating 82% of total revenues, clearly shows that exports as companies’ main strength: 48% of companies report an increase in exports in the fourth quarter of 2013, 40% report stability and only 12% report a drop. These results are expected to replicate in the first three months of 2014, with substantial stability (48%) and a greater number of companies expecting growth (32%) compared to those expecting a decrease (20%). This data is supported by order performance on foreign markets, which shows an upward trend at the end of 2013 and is expected to remain stable (48%) in the I quarter of 2014 with a clear predominance of positive forecasts (44% compared to 8%)
from market operators. The international scenario, traditionally very receptive to Italian products, looks interesting for the coming months especially in Far East markets, in Middle-East countries like Iran and in the recovering U.S. market. Conversely, it is less promising in Latin American countries compared to the past. Export performance offsets a critical domestic market, curbed by the liquidity crisis which causes even those companies interested in investing to be extremely cautious. The domestic market was substantially stagnant in the last portion of the year (46% of companies report stability, the remaining sample is equally divided between increase and drop) with optimists having a slight margin in the forecasts for the I quarter 2014. The same holds true for domestic orders, again with a predominant positive outlook for the beginning of 2014. Nearly 80% of sample companies report stable employment levels.
“Our companies represent an industry segment capable of reacting to difficulties and having with a strong presence on global markets – says Acimga president Marco Calcagni – as clearly evidenced by the results of the market survey. However, we cannot overlook important signs like the stagnation of the domestic market, slowed down by a liquidity crisis banks do little to mitigate. Also, we need to pay close attention to the international market, where competition is increasingly fierce. German manufacturers are gaining ground on Italian companies, accompanied beyond their national borders by a more efficient financial and banking system. This – says Mr Calcagni – coupled with the overvaluation of the Euro vs. U.S. Dollar signals the need for greater, more effective support to the ‘Italian systems’ on international markets”.

drupa Global Trends report Global investment in the print industry will be stronger in the next 12 months as confidence returns.
The first drupa Global Trends report provides analysis of the printing and media sector worldwide. drupa will publish two report series entitled “drupa Global Trends” and “drupa Global Insights,” that will study for the first time the trends and major changes in the international print and media sector at both global and regional levels. The results will be based on answers provided by a representative panel consisting of leading executives from printers, suppliers and print purchasers from around the world, recruited primarily from the drupa 2012 visitor and exhibitor database. Messe Düsseldorf, in its role as drupa organiser, has appointed two independent consulting and market research companies Printfuture (UK) and Wissler & Partner (Switzerland) to conduct these two report series. The first “drupa Global Trends” report is now published.

Despite reporting significant regional variations, the “drupa Global Trends” report does reveal a number of critical – and sometimes surprising – trends that are shared by all economic regions and across print segments (Publishing Packaging and Commercial). As was to be expected, the report confirmed that the global printing industry’s structural transformation is still ongoing, with increasing costs coupled with declining prices and shrinking margins. However, three other major findings of the study are more pivotal: 1. There are clear signs that economic conditions are improving. As a consequence the printing industry globally is planning increased investment over the next twelve months. Efficiency gains and the development of new services are driving investment in the industrialised countries. North America is leading the way by gearing up for major transformation with high levels of investment in printing technology, IT and new services. In the emerging countries growing demand is the main driver. 2. The printing industry is in the midst of a transition from a product-driven industry to a service-driven one. The demand for new solutions and business models that better reflect the customer needs is clear. 3. As expected, digital printing plays an increasing role in the technology mix deployed. Among print services providers, 65% produce using both conventional and digital methods and one-third of commercial printers already gain
a quarter or more of their turnover from digital printing. But conventional printing (especially sheet-fed offset) continues to be an important pillar for the print sector. Planned investment reflects this point as 29% of all printers say they intend to invest in sheet-fed offset printing. “Thanks to these two report series, drupa is able to offer first-rate, representative market data and information that will enable the market players – be they providers of print services, suppliers or print purchasers – to make better strategic decisions. In addition the reports will allow variations between the world’s major economic regions to be analysed. Finally the insights gained will serve to further improve drupa’s positioning,” says Werner M. Dornscheidt, the President and CEO of Messe Düsseldorf. This first drupa “Global Trends” report provides an initial assessment of the state of the global print industry In order to monitor the trends going forward, the survey will be repeated in the fourth quarter each year. In parallel drupa will publish a series of “Global Insight” reports that will offer detailed analysis into specific industry-relevant topics. An “Insights” report on “The Impact of the Internet on Print” will kick off the series in June of 2014. The objective will be to show the effects of the Internet on e-commerce, digital marketing, mass customisation and IT on the world of print and illustrate how future strategies and business models need to adapt. Some 2,500 decision-makers from across the globe (119 countries) participated in the survey in the fourth quarter of 2013 and answered the extensive questionnaire. The majority (58%) came from print services providers, followed by suppliers (21%) and print purchasers (21%). An executive summary of the survey results (in German, English, Spanish, French, Portuguese, Russian and Chinese) is available as a PDF download at Messe Duesseldorf Website.

Two KBA companies with production facilities in China China has been the largest single market for printing presses from the Koenig & Bauer group for a number of years. It is already more than 20 years ago that KBA established its first local presence on this enormous market, where the current sales and service network comprises KBA Printing Machinery (Shanghai) Co., Ltd., further branch offices in Beijing and Guangzhou, and KBA (HK) Co. Ltd. in Hong Kong. More than 170 staff at KBA China provide professional and allembracing customer services for Chinese users of sheetfed offset, web and special presses.
Speciality sheet feeders: KBA Machinery (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. It is possibly less well known that there are also KBA companies manufacturing and assembling press equipment in China. In 2010, for example, Koenig & Bauer AG 2010 acquired an 80% majority interest in MABEG Machinery (Shanghai) Co. Ltd (MMS). The company’s 63 employees produce mainly sheet feeders for Chinese die-cutter, laminator and sheetfed printing press manufacturers, but at the same time also a variety of parts and components for the European supplier industry. With effect from 01.04.2014, MMS will be operating under the new name KBA Machinery (Shanghai) Co. Ltd (then KMS for short). As chairman of the Chinese subsidiary, Herbert Nadj has already been reporting to KBA executive vice-president for production Michael Kummert since
20
February 2014
July 2013. With his background in power electronics, Nadj travelled the world between 1986 and 1998 as a service technician and project manager for screen printing machines. From 1998 to 2008, he then contributed decisively to development of the Chinese subsidiary MMS as plant, installation and service manager for Mabeg Maschinenbau GmbH & Co KG, before moving on to Rudolf Fritz GmbH & Co. KG, where he served as technical manager until January 2013. Nadj joined KBA in February 2013 and was appointed chairman of MMS / KBA Machinery (Shanghai) in the following summer. He now plans to expand business relationships to local suppliers in the upper market segment and in this way to win new customers. Given the ever higher quality of production, he also sees a good chance to expand deliveries of components to Europe.
Speciality marking and coding: KBA-Metronic Hangzhou Co., Ltd. The Binjiang district of Hangzhou is an upwardly striving high-tech location. A modern high-speed train connects the area with Shanghai, approx. 200 km to the northeast. It was in Hangzhou that KBAMetronic GmbH and partners founded KBA-Metronic Hangzhou Co., Ltd. as a further sales and manufacturing company in summer 2013. The KBA specialist for industrial marking and coding systems, which has its main offices in Veitshöchheim near Würzburg, expects this investment to give a further push to international growth.
Alongside KBA-Metronic, as majority shareholder, the remaining shares are held by In-Dun (HQ) Holding Inc. and In-Dun Co. Ltd. KBA-Metronic and In-Dun can already look back over a long partnership. In-Dun has represented KBA-Metronic in Taiwan since 2005, and in China since 2006. An assembly line for alphaJET inkjet printers is currently being set up at the Chinese factory. Know-how and certain key components, however, are to remain the responsibility of the German headquarters. A total of 23 employees will initially be handling manufacturing, sales and service for China and Taiwan. Additional sales offices are to be opened in Zhejiang and Guangdong. Expansion to supply the rest of the Southeast Pacific region is planned for the future.

Entirely new services will emerge that will transform people’s everyday lives and open up new business opportunities. Keeping this long term vision in mind, the RTC will focus on technologies for smart networking of devices and systems with enhanced reasoning and assistance capabilities. The technologies developed in the domain of IoTS also aim to address India centric challenges, as Bosch believes that the country can achieve a strategic edge by becoming an early adopter of IoTS systems.
A new Research & Technology Center to foster high-end innovations
India remains a region of opportunities but also with challenges
Present only in four other international Bosch locations, this prestigious high-end innovation center in India is part of Robert Bosch Engineering and Business Solutions (RBEI) – the largest software development center of Bosch, outside Germany. It aims to engage with the finest academic research community and work with some of the best technical talent pool in India.
Commenting on the current economic situation in India, Mr. Tyroller added: “Though the current economic environment poses challenges, we are convinced that India’s consumption story remains positive and retain a bullish outlook for our mid- and long-term growth prospects”. Technologies for driver convenience and comfort
During these testing times, adequate measures were taken to retain profitability and competitiveness with effective cost rationalization measures and optimum utilization of resources. On the other hand, over the last two years, Bosch strengthened its presence in India by setting up new facilities in Verna (Goa), Chennai and Sanand (Ahmedabad) for its Packaging, Electrical Drives and Drive & Control businesses respectively. The relocation project of the manufacturing unit based at Adugodi, Bangalore to Bidadi is currently in progress.
Technology showcase during the 2014 Auto Expo Bosch India has adopted a new approach to showcase and discuss its latest technological offerings to the Indian and International OEMs during the 2014 Auto Expo in a new format at a private venue near the OEM show. Customers will be invited to visit the venue and interact with Bosch technology experts. This format reaffirms the company’s commitment and focus to work closely with its customers in India.
Key technology highlights of Bosch As the country continues to grow and evolve with its mobility requirements, the demand for safety and comfort features in driving is gaining increasing importance. Be it in two-wheelers, three-wheelers, passenger cars or commercial vehicles – customer demand and government legislations have pushed technology providers to step up and provide solutions that are available in mature international markets. In India, Bosch has been from the very beginning at the forefront of these technological innovations and has been offering customized global solutions as well as developing cost effective yet sophisticated technologies specifically for the local market.
Ensuring safety on wheels Global research statistics show that India has the highest number of road accidents in the world. As per data released by Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH), in 2012 more than 490,000 accidents were reported, leading to 138,000 fatalities. Of these fatalities, 17 percent involved passenger cars and 26 percent involved motorcycles. One of the measures to counter this critical situation is the deployment of crash avoidance technologies like Antilock Braking System (ABS) and the Electronic Stability Program (ESP®) in all vehicles plying on Indian roads. For several decades, Bosch has been developing and providing safety technologies for automobiles and has recently introduced this in India in the two-wheeler segment as well. This is the first two-wheeler ABS, specifically developed for motorcycles and not derived from the passenger car ABS.It is the smallest and lightest motorcycle ABS in the world. Bosch ABS Generation 9 comes with a modular configuration and its variants can meet the entire gamut of two-wheelers. For a country like India, Bosch has also developed the Single Channel ABS 9 system which offers ABS functionality for bikes with only one disc brake at the front wheel. This is particularly important as a sliding front wheel leads to accidents in many cases. The latest break-through safety technology from Bosch – MSC or Motorcycle Stability Control – offers the most advanced level of safety for motorcycles. It provides comprehensive data on current riding conditions and can use this data as a basis for adjusting engine and braking-power during acceleration and braking to keep the motorbike stable. For the first time ever this allows braking even in curves and bends which are highly accident-prone spots.
The latest Bosch technological offerings provide convenience and comfort in mobility by assisting the driver in a wide variety of tasks and furthermore providing entertainment. One example is mySPIN, a highly appealing smartphone integration solution by Bosch which creates a perfect device-vehicle link and ensures safe and reliable in-car use. It allows users to continue using their preferred apps on their iPhone® or Android smartphone in the way they are accustomed to and without compromising safety. Another highlight is the fully automatic parking technology that utilizes ultrasonic sensors as well as cameras that improves visibility for drivers and reduces their workload with intuitive displays. The Bosch automatic parking assistant system allows for complete automatic parking into and out of selected parking spaces, helping drivers to focus solely on controlling the process. Drivers can get out of their car in front of the selected space and start the parking maneuver remotely by pressing a button on their car key or smartphone.
Efficient technology that reduces emission Under its ‘clean and economical’ technologies, the highlights are a lowcost exhaust gas after treatment solution, electronic fuel-injection for two-wheelers, solutions to meet future evaporative emission norms and CNG offerings, e.g. the world’s smallest gas injectors. As the next step in world-wide emission legislations a diagnosis system for comprehensive exhaust-gas treatment is introduced in order to ensure compliance with emission targets over the vehicle’s lifetime. Adherence to stringent emission norms is possible through high precision control systems including locally produced components and locally programmed software. Keeping in mind the emerging markets’ special requirements and cost targets, electronic control units (ECU) for different applications including powertrain are locally developed in India.
The road ahead: a connected and automated future In global automotive development
February 2014

electrification, automation and connectivity are the main trends and Bosch is at the forefront of innovation in all three areas. Automation is coming step by step, and with it, increased safety and comfort on the road. Although fully-automated vehicles are still at least a decade away, an increasing number of automated safety and assistance functions are already putting us closer to our goal of accident-free driving. An important prerequisite for full automation is connected driving. Bosch puts a focus on car-to-cloud connectivity, which will see vehicles maintain constant connections with high-speed mobile data networks. By 2025, Bosch expects that in many markets worldwide nearly every
new car sold will be capable of this. The innovations Bosch is developing in India, such as automotive apps and connected solutions using the vehicle as a connected internet node, set a basis for these future trends. This makes the country an important R&D base for new technology development also for the Bosch Group.
Bosch in India In India, Bosch is one of the leading suppliers of technology and services in the areas of automotive and industrial technology, consumer goods and building technology. Additionally, Bosch also has in India, the largest development centre, outside
Germany, for end to end engineering and technology solutions. The Bosch Group operates in India through six companies, viz, Bosch Limited, Bosch Chassis Systems India Limited, Bosch Rexroth India Limited, Robert Bosch Engineering and Business Solutions Limited, Bosch Automotive Electronics India Pvt Ltd, Bosch Electrical Drives India Pvt Ltd. In India, Bosch set up its manufacturing operation in 1953, which has grown over the years to include 10 manufacturing sites and 7 development and application centers Bosch Group in India employs over 26,000 associates. In India it generated consolidated revenue of nearly ₨12,900 crores in 2012.
PrintWel International installs a GUK commercial folder Printwel International, one of the largest integrated printer exporters from Marathwada region, has acquired a GUK K74/6 KTL automatic folding machine from Welbound. machine and it is already proving that our decision was right. GUK is probably well known for the very high end pharmaceutical insert and outsert folding machines, but their commercial folders are also a class apart. It’s difficult to source a pre owned one.”
PrintWel has recently gone in for a major expansion drive, including the investment in a brand new Ryobi 4 colour sheet feed offset. “Having the state-of-the-art post press to match a new printing machine is a must: otherwise, you won’t be able to exploit the full extent of the printing capabilities,” says Pradeep Shinde, Director of Printwel. “We looked at various options, including Welbound’s own Diploma folder, which could have done the job. But then we always wanted to own a brand new German folding
The GUK K 74/6 KTL machine has a flat pile feeder, transport table, folding station with 6 buckles, a cross knife and a parallel knife. The machine has a speed of 180 meters per minute and folds out various formats from a4 size, with an incredible level of accuracy. GUK is known for the high engineering standards that produce highly specialized folding rollers that are responsible for the accuracy levels. For the pharmaceutical market, GUK produces machines that fold a news paper
sized sheet to one that fits the small cap of a bottle. “GUK and Welbound have a strong relationship since 2004. We have been their sales and service partners for both commercial and miniature folding machines. We are exploring possibilities of enhancing this relationship to look at assembly of commercial folders in India. The machine supplied to PrintWel has the complete electricals, including the servo drives for knives, designed and assembled by our team in India,” says K C Sanjeev managing Director of Welbound. World over, faster and newer folding machines have replaced older ones on a scale of 1 new machine for two old ones. This is probably the reason a lot of used folding machines find their way to India. It is important that the print houses realize that to do the jobs faster, accurately, within the minimum foot print with optimum utilization of manpower is very important, to remain profitable. The cost of used equipments is much higher than the new ones, and this is more so in the case of post press equipment.

“This competition serves to show the world the best labels from international associations worldwide. The quality of the submitted labels each year continues to amaze the judges with this year being no exception. The level of technical skill shown by the entrants is exceptional”, said Tony White, chairman of the judging panel. “The competition culminates in the new Best of the Best awards which are selected from five of the main stream printing processes.” The associations taking part were: FINAT (Europe), JFLP (Japan), LATMA (Australia), ABIEA (Brazil), SALMA (New Zealand), and TLMI (North America).
Winners Honourable Mention Total JFLP 9 3 12 TLMI 6 1 7 FINAT 4 6 10 LATMA 3 2 5 SALMA 1 2 3 ABIEA - - Total 23 14 37
Best of the Best In addition to the awards mentioned above, 5 new L9 Global awards representing the “Best of the Best” will be presented later in the year at an event to be agreed in Chicago. The winners are selected from the winners of the L9 World label Awards competition within the following Classes: Flexo, Letterpress, Offset Litho, Combination and Digital. The identities of the winners will be revealed at the awards ceremony and are deemed to be the “Oscars” of the label industry. The judging for the 2014 L9 WLA competition will take place before the start of the 2014 Labelexpo event in September in Chicago. India’s Pragati Pack (India) Pvt. Ltd. is the winner in Class 1: Flexo – Line. The company won for Security label excise seals country liquor.
Skanem Willich and Gallus Skanem Willich GmbH decided to switch from letterpress to flexographic presses with the screen printing and embossing options in 1999 as part of a drive to increase production efficiency, since flexographic printing enabled the company to print highly attractive labels
faster and at lower cost. This decision was embraced by Skanem’s customers and production was thus subsequently focused almost exclusively on flexographic printing. Yet whenever high coverage, precise detail and colour intensity are needed, screen
printing is more suitable than flexographic printing. This printing process had long been extremely costly for Skanem Willich due to the need to have screens manufactured by external service providers and was only used at the express request of customers. However, Skanem wanted to get away from the escalating interchangeability of label printers and be able to offer its customers higher quality labels to give them a competitive edge. A more cost effective solution for screen manufacture thus had to be found and, after considerable deliberation, Skanem opted for in-house screen production. In 2009, Gallus Ferd. Rüesch AG supplied the necessary equipment to manufacture Gallus Screeny screen printing cylinders using Gallus Screeny materials and ensured that Skanem Willich GmbH could also use Gallus Screeny screen printing plates on non-Gallus machines.

The new CUT 1405 is characterized by a flexible choice for the appropriate in-feed systems, formats and closure options. It can safely and gently handle different carton sizes and packages a wide variety of primary packaging such as bottles, vials, syringes, ampoules, tubes, blisters and trays as well as bags, stick packs and sachets in folding cartons. Inserts to single and combination products such as spoons or outserts can also be integrated into the modular in-feed system. With its quickly exchangeable modules for tuck-in, glue and combination closures, the machine can be flexibly used for various products and line combinations. In addition to pharmaceuticals, the new CUT 1405 is also especially suitable for the packaging of cosmetic and food products.
New in-feed modules and optimized conveyor technology The intermittent cartoner can be equipped with diverse in-feed systems, ensuring maximum flexibility for customized line concepts as well as the packaging of different products and product combinations. The CUT 1405 further features an optimized conveyor technology of the folding carton magazine. To prevent the cartons from getting caught, they are transported into the magazine by a lifting motion of the rake. Thanks to the patented folding carton carrier, the individual cartons maintain their shape as the intermittent transport system moves them through the machine. This prevents damage to the product and ensures precise packaging results. A mechanical gripper arm carries out leaflet in-feed, which is directly assigned to each product. A shift register checks and follows all products, to ensure that leaflets are only processed further if the outcome of all test results is positive. “This technology has been successful for over ten years and was further optimized for the CUT 1405,” says Daniel Sanwald. Thanks to excellent accessibility, the folder unit can be conveniently operated from the front and, if required, also swivelled out.

Studio, a unique set of tools for 3D packaging design GROUP360 Worldwide® uses Esko Studio Toolkit for Shrink Sleeves to help accurately predict artwork distortion. GROUP360 Worldwide has been using a number of Esko design tools to build virtual 3D models of packaging – much faster and less expensively than physical prototypes – for customer reviews, and to create accurate artwork for shrink sleeves. GROUP360 Worldwide is a full-service marketing communications organization with well over 400 associates and 20 offices worldwide. Their impressive client list is a virtual ‘who’s who’ of Fortune 100 companies that market some of the world’s most iconic consumer brands. GROUP360 Worldwide’s unique, all in-house solution has proven to help brand owners get their products to the shelf and their messages to the marketplace better, faster and more financially intelligent than ever before. They do this by seamlessly linking together strategy, creative and execution, which includes all required marketing and production disciplines, each executed at best-of-class standards. Every one of these key disciplines are driven by proprietary processes, technology, custom SOP’s, and highly experienced leadership, who bring decades of experience as national brand marketers, agency executives, and production specialists from around the globe.
Finding a better process to predict shrink sleeve distortions Unlike many companies, GROUP360 Worldwide does not use a heat process to determine shrink sleeve distortions. At times they may get specifications with product grids from the converter. While they could create good designs, the process of creating distortions for artwork required some calculations along with some guesswork. Their measurements were quite accurate, but they wanted to predict shrinkage even better. At the same time they wanted to create 3D renderings, show them to the client, and demonstrate how certain objects in the artwork could react to counter distortion. “For the most part, we wanted to eliminate the guesswork of printing and reprinting design scenarios,” says Mark Meyer, Workflow/R&D Director - Application Development. GROUP360 Worldwide had used ArtPro PowerWarp, which helped to counter distortions created by physical shrink sleeves. After Artwork Systems merged with Esko, GROUP360 Worldwide transitioned from PowerWarp to Studio Toolkit for Shrink Sleeves kit about two years ago. It allowed them to easily work with regular shapes created in Studio Toolkit and irregular shapes created in other 3D applications, rather than just simple cups or bottles. GROUP 360’s use of design and production tools has expanded to include: • Esko Automation Engine, a modular workflow

server with dynamic workflows that are easy to set up and operate. Studio, a unique set of tools for 3D packaging design Studio Toolkit for Boxes, a version of Studio specifically for boxes, using technology from ArtiosCAD, a structural design package, and several tools to handle the complexity of panels. Studio Toolkit for Flexibles, providing design tools to make flexible packaging shapes quickly. Studio Toolkit for Shrink Sleeves, which can simulate a virtual shrink sleeve around an object.
Designers instantly see what artwork elements suffer from the distortion in 3D. It can handle round objects, asymetrical objects and even multi-packs. GROUP360 Worldwide needed the ability to work with irregular shapes. “We work with many unusual containers, such as flavored water bottles for example. We will design the shape with a 3D modeling program and import it into Studio Toolkit for Shrink Sleeves. From there creating the label is pretty easy,” explains Meyer. “Virtually any packaging structure can be used to create a shrink label, and artwork wrapped around that. The interface is very simple and there is not much to adjust. Studio Toolkit for Shrink Sleeves is also very helpful when creating basic assembly models – for example, when we want to show what it will look like to wrap a shrink sleeve around a case of soft drink cans or bottles. Or, there are times when we will show a customer a scene of what it will look like to use a shipping box as a display. We can show the tear-out of the box, exposing the product inside. In that case, we use Studio Toolkit for Boxes and Studio Toolkit for Flexibles.” By using Studio with Automation Engine, GROUP360 Worldwide is able to create a model and distribute the files to operators to place graphics on the structure in Adobe® Illustrator®. From there they use the Automation Engine workflow to create the final rendering. “Studio Toolkit for Shrink Sleeves is great for design work. We will use it to create a rendering for artwork, making adjustments based upon production needs – mostly for brand integrity,” adds Meyer. “Most clients are given a flat template, but rarely a digital prototype. Many do not have a good
idea of what it will look like in the final form. For example, there could be a square logo near the neck of a bottle which will get pinched in. In the end, it could look like a rectangle or another unacceptable shape. Or, a round logo could look like an egg. On a regular basis, we will pre-distort the artwork and show the brand owner what it will look like. Ultimately, the client will decide to alter the artwork or move the logo away from a high-distortion area to somewhere that is safer, giving them a more consistent, branded product. We can use Studio as a quality control tool offering a prediction of distortion. From my point of view, that is much easier than going to press and heat tunnels.” There is a big time difference between creating a high-end 3D rendering and creating a rendering on Automation Engine. “We can spend an hour or more in a complicated 3D design application to render a file. But once we have a good model, it could take us only 30 seconds in Automation Engine to create the final rendering. It cuts down production time exponentially – perhaps ten times faster or more. Once we have an approved carton model, it could be as much as fifty times faster. I can produce in 15 seconds what it might take the production department 15 minutes to determine acceptable artwork,” calculates Meyer. “There is a significant cost savings by using Studio for prototypes versus going to press.”
what was not going to distort,” remembers Meyer. “It allowed us to experiment with many styles and sizes and quickly render the packaging for each container. In combination with our workflow server, Esko Automation Engine, 3D work can be passed from our operators’ desks to a final rendering in a very efficient manner.” “Studio Toolkit for Shrink Sleeves is a valuable product for very specific needs,” he adds. “If you have a specific purpose for shrink sleeves, Studio Toolkit for Shrink Sleeves is simple to use and is up and running quickly. As far as I know, it’s the only product that accurately mimics the prediction of shrinking.”
For some clients a virtual 3D model is fine. In fact, a few of GROUP360 Worldwide’s customers are using the 3D renderings for sales and premarketing. Other clients require a physical mock-up, which GROUP360 Worldwide also produces or offers through a variety of its partners. However, the price tag can be up to five times more for a physical mock-up than it is for a 3D rendering counterpart. “We were creating shrink sleeves for 300+ variations of packaging for a recent project. Basically, by predicting the distortions, it gave us the confidence to go through all of them and make a quick decision as to what was going to distort – and by how much – and

Equipped for the Future: Labelling Association, FINAT develops new strategic initiatives to create a roadmap for success in a changing world
Kurt Walker, second-term President of FINAT, the international association promoting labelling and its key role in the world of packaging and FINAT’s Managing Director, Jules Lejeune, tell how the association plans to achieve the challenging agenda to lead its members securely into the future.
‘What use is an association if it doesn’t map out the path that will lead its members securely into the future?’ asks Kurt Walker, President, FINAT.
Key Notes : > Need for a collective infrastructure that can create a flow of shared information and promote the industry > Actively encourage individual member companies’ creativity and success’. > Since its early days, FINAT’s mission has been to provide a sound and solid knowledge base on which the whole industry can depend.

As an active participant in the labelling industry in label converting – the sharp end – Mr.Walker is a keen supporter of the need for a collective infrastructure that, he says, ‘can create a flow of shared information, promote the industry, identify and inform members of relevant technology developments, and at the same time actively encourage individual member companies’ creativity and success’. Jules Lejeune – himself a second-generation participant in the association’s Secretariat -- echoes this sentiment. ‘Since the early days of FINAT in the 1950s and 1960s, when the whole concept of packaging and labelling was growing fast, along with the explosion in supermarketing’, he remarks, ‘it has been FINAT’s mission to provide a sound and solid knowledge base on which the whole industry can depend.’
Membership profile
‘Unusually’, Jules Lejeune adds, ‘our membership spans the entire supply chain, so our association’s remit is particularly broad. But our members tell us that FINAT’s ability to cover the self-adhesive label industry as a whole, from raw material suppliers to printers, is a real help in planning for the future. This is particularly true today, in our changing business world and in the face of advancing technology – not only in labelling, but in communications, sales platforms, and consumer demand.’
Developing the strategy With the FINAT Board and Secretariat, President Walker has been hard at work developing the strategy for the association to the year 2020, with associated tactics that will indeed leverage the industry’s combined interests – ‘not only in Europe’, he says, ‘but in concert with our counterpart associations outside Europe and with the regional label associations that are the heartbeat of our industry.’
Looking back… The label industry around the world has grown exponentially from the original entrepreneurial base of family-owned self-adhesive label print businesses
pressideas/ plc
who were clever enough to embrace the technology’s potential back in the 1970s and 1980s. Says Jules Lejeune: ‘Those companies are no longer little. Many are not even just local or even just regional, and there has been much merger and acquisition activity. Now it’s time for their founders – reallife baby boomers – to retire, and make way for the new generation’s vision and values.’
Looking forward ‘Not only that,’ adds Kurt Walker. ‘The world of labelling and packaging is of course changing right at its base – in technology and scope. It’s sometimes difficult to differentiate today between a label and the pack it’s applied to. Current pre-press, printing and finishing technologies can accommodate many more options than the sturdy rotary letterpress machines that originally set selfadhesive labels on their feet. The context has changed completely, and, as prime supporters of this broad-ranging industry, we need to move the goalposts.’
is strategically making the change from a passive to an active role in driving our industry’s future success.’ Kurt Walker adds: ‘We have begun with infrastructure – and designed a programme for our members that includes an up-tothe-minute online reference source as well as a forward schedule of expert webinars and face-to-face workshops and seminars on key aspects of future developments and directions.’ The need to co-ordinate the collection and dissemination of technical updates across the label industry’s vertical supply chain is one of FINAT’s key objectives, as well as to draw in to its knowledge hub the expertise of other organisations and partner industries which affect the activities of FINAT member companies. ‘This’, says Jules Lejeune, ‘can be difficult for individual companies to achieve within their full business agendas, so it is an ideal task for a pan-industry association like FINAT.’
‘Leadership by knowledge’ Taking this as the basis for discussion, we asked Jules Lejeune how, in practical terms, FINAT can really expect to continue to offer its membership ‘leadership by knowledge’. ‘We have the benefit of a truly global base of converting technologies and print consumables, and an ever-strengthening customer base of international brand owners and other label user customers. FINAT continues to strengthen its position as the recognised umbrella for the European industry because it now sensibly reflects the broader portfolio of label types our converter members can offer,’ he says. ‘And importantly,’ he adds, ‘the association is actively “looking over the fence” at new and emerging opportunities such as printed electronics, direct-to-pack print, QR codes and advanced security/track-and-trace print, which are even now extending the definition of a label. It’s our job to make our members aware of the possibilities for expanding their business platform, both today, and for the future. We also track advances in materials, which are also redefining the nature of a label or pack. Then there are the game-changing opportunities that information technology and the digital revolution, in all its roles, has brought to labelling and packaging around the world. So, across the board, FINAT
Attracting a broader member base Knowledge and education are not the only fronts on which FINAT is developing major projects. ‘To represent the European label industry successfully,’ says Kurt Walker, ‘FINAT’s membership really needs to be inclusive. Present membership is very much western-European based, but we are actively engaged in projects to further raise FINAT’s profile and create added interest in the value of membership – particularly in countries to the east of our region. This is a very dynamic part of the world, and the many new entrants to our industry there can really benefit from FINAT’s international profile, and – in a spirit of mutual learning -- bring new visions and values to the association. We’re targeting converters and both direct and indirect suppliers and developing a Road Show. Our partners in this are, in particular, our Young Managers Club (established not long ago to mentor the upcoming generation of managers in our industry, and now the source of huge energy and ideas!), and of course our friends in the established national label associations, who, with their local knowledge and local language capabilities, are key players. This is just the start of an energetic programme of events.’
Infrastructure redefined
This focus on outreach is matched in the new FINAT strategy with an adaptation of its day-to-day organisational structure to reflect leading-edge business practice in a world that simply will not stand still, as Kurt Walker explains. ‘FINAT is not just a passive “in-box” for information on technology developments, geographic change, and legislative and political issues. Its remit today is to actively help to drive that change in our industry, both within our supply chain and through creating an interface with our end users. This is an exciting mission!’ he says.
The important volunteer force As well as strengthening partnership with the regional European label associations, FINAT will also collaborate actively with the global label associations, with whom the association already has strong links, and reposition its approach to its highly-important volunteer force – the key to driving forward this ambitious strategy. ‘We depend enormously on our volunteers’, says Jules Lejeune, ‘and we want to encourage even more of them to come forward – but in a way that does not represent an obstacle in the execution of their activities in the companies for whom they work. We believe we can better attract participation in limited-life projects rather than in long-term infrastructure management – and I am sure this approach, while it’s a major “redesign”, will certainly stimulate members’ commitment. Of course, the FINAT Secretariat will continue to provide a solid infrastructure platform, as well as a flexible and responsive pathway to expert professional support wherever it’s needed.’
In-depth industry trends 2014/15 strategic projects already underway or in the practical planning stage include the launch of a new, wide-ranging half-yearly professionally-conducted Industry Trends Report, exclusively for FINAT members. On-site industry trends seminars and round tables will brief (and debrief) members around the region, and will be complemented by regular webinars so that members can keep their fingers on the industry’s pulse without leaving their workstations.
FINAT Congress – a new profile Perhaps the jewel in the crown of FINAT’s events programme is the annual FINAT Congress – and, says Kurt Walker, ‘here, too, we are redefining the agenda to better reflect members’ needs. Rather than deliver

already resulted in a respected presence in EU debates on packaging legislation. The association’s continuing strategic actions begin, in partnership with the regional label associations, with the creation of a central knowledge base comprising opportunities, issues, legislation, and extant infrastructure in a global context. ‘Sustainability is another arena of critical member interest where our association can helpfully collect and share knowledge on a regular basis with members’ says Jules Lejeune. ‘But our key global focus,’ he emphasises, ‘moves forward from that base. From our strong starting position, we are taking positive action in the environmental arena to encourage the international harmonisation of sustainability standards relevant to the label industry.’
An association with a real, practical mission a straightforward industry “get together”, Congress is now being repositioned as a top-level industry forum. We will roll out the new format in 2015, when the event comes to Amsterdam. As well as featuring top international speakers on management interests and challenges, it will be much more highly business oriented, and will provide much more opportunity for delegates
to interact, network and participate in breakout discussions.’
Sustainability – a true action agenda No consideration of future vision and values would be complete without adding sustainability to the agenda. This is a field where FINAT’s responsible stance has
Today’s FINAT is certainly preparing the way for its members. Its 21st century vision is to empower the labelling industry to define and achieve its long-term goals, and, as we heard in our interview with FINAT’s flag bearers Kurt Walker and Jules Lejeune, to successfully make the quantum leaps that a changing business world and advancing technology will for certain continue to demand in the coming years.

Flint adds new plate to the portfolio During the past years, the demands for a flexo printing plate have changed significantly; the plates have to be more and more specialised and adapted to the substrate as well as inks. Flint Group Flexographic Products meets these requirements by introducing the high durometer flexographic printing plate, nyloflex® ACE UP Digital. The new plate is especially designed for use with water based inks in corrugated preprint and aseptic packaging printing, and it’s also suitable for UV flexo printing. Extensive field tests have demonstrated that the new printing plate provides a superior printing quality. The excellent ink transfer,
especially on paper and rough substrates results in high ink density and homogenous, smooth solids. Defined highlight areas, text and line work as well as barcodes are sharply defined. The plate displays a long run life and stability in printing, which results in a significantly increased efficiency. The low surface tack ensures a reduced attraction of paper dust and dirt, enhancing productivity and durability of the plate. It also allows stacking of the clichés without interleaves, thus further improving the storage properties. The new digital photopolymer printing plate, nyloflex® ACE UP Digital is expected to be available to the market from this month.

Skanem Willich and why screen printing is indispensable Skanem Willich GmbH knows how to harness the added value from screen printing and has cut costs by bringing standardized and automated screen manufacturing in-house.
Skanem Willich GmbH, based in Willich, Germany, is part of the Skanem Group, which was founded in Norway in 1905 and is now the largest European printshop group for selfadhesive labels. The company in Germany uses state-of-the-art narrow-web, reel-fed presses equipped with flexographic printing units and embossing and screen printing finishing options to produce highquality labels for bodycare, household, car maintenance and other care products. Skanem Willich GmbH decided to switch from letterpress to flexographic presses with the screen printing and embossing options in 1999 as part of a drive to increase production efficiency, since flexographic printing enabled the company to print highly attractive labels faster and at lower cost. This decision was embraced by Skanem’s customers and production was thus subsequently focused almost exclusively on flexographic printing. Yet whenever high coverage, precise detail and colour intensity are needed, screen printing is more suitable than flexographic printing. This printing process had long been
42
February 2014
extremely costly for Skanem Willich due to the need to have screens manufactured by external service providers and was only used at the express request of customers. However, Skanem wanted to get away from the escalating interchangeability of label printers and be able to offer its customers higher quality labels to give them a competitive edge. A more costeffective solution for screen manufacture thus had to be found and, after considerable deliberation, Skanem opted for in-house screen production. Yet at that time screen manufacture still took over half an hour, manual washing out and the lengthy drying process often produced unsatisfactory results, and the follow-up costs if the processes were not carried out exactly were extremely high. However, the Gallus wash-out machine, which was launched three years ago, solved these problems almost entirely and also reduced the employee skills required for manufacturing screen printing plates. It rinses Gallus Screeny screen printing plates perfectly in a single pass and sends them dried to the delivery after just four to five minutes. The integrated solution from Gallus enables Skanem Willich to manufacture Gallus Screeny screen printing plates in an industrial, automated and standardized process in line with that used for its flexographic printing plates and led to improved product quality and significant cost reductions. The ease of manufacturing a Gallus Screeny screen printing plate convinced even the most sceptical employees. The length of exposure in the contact frame and the correct
settings for the required washing out times, depending on the specific screen printing plate, can be easily read from a table. Prepress staff have been trained to produce both screen printing and flexographic printing plates. If a screen printing cylinder needs to be replaced at three o’clock in the morning, a new one can be produced in less than half an hour. No printer would manage to change over a 10-colour press in this short time. Gallus Screeny screen printing plates are therefore now produced, printed and stored in-house at Skanem Willich. The reusage concept developed by Gallus enables screens to be archived and reused for reprints. Skanem Willich GmbH is now once again using screen printing for over 25 percent of all labels, particularly for transparent self-adhesive labels. Only with this printing process is it possible, for example, to underlay a motif with white that is as opaque as possible with four to eight grams of ink per square metre or to produce a very small wordmark that is sharp, rich in contrast and clearly legible. While many of Skanem Willich’s competitors are on a seemingly unavoidable downward spiral in the price war, much of their product quality is falling by the wayside. Skanem Willich, on the other hand, can supply its customers with labels that pass the “first moment of truth” test on a supermarket shelf with flying colours and thus offer probably the most convincing arguments for investing in screen printing – standing out from the crowd and premium quality. These are the crucial factors for every label producer to enjoy long-term success on an ever fiercer market.

Collaboration and Globalisation gather momentum at PACE Key trends highlighted by Packaging and Converting Executive Forum Collaborative innovation, globalisation, a changing distribution model and sustainable development were the four major trends influencing and impacting today’s packaging arena highlighted by the successful ninth annual Packaging and Converting Executive (PACE) Forum, held recently in Brussels. Michaël Nieuwesteeg, Managing Director NVC Netherlands Packaging Centre, chaired the event. He presided over a packed agenda of visionary keynote speakers that included Marta Pazos (Decorative Finishes & Materials Senior Scientist, Procter & Gamble), who discussed low volume/high margin product packaging development, Arno Melchior, (Global Packaging Director, Reckitt Benckiser Group), addressing the ROI of sustainability and Aline Clavellina (Marketing Vice President, Grupo Bimbo) who detailed successful ways to fund innovation. From these discussions, four trends could be pinpointed: collaborative innovation, globalisation and flexibility supported by workflow management and digital printing, the changing distribution model and sustainable development. As a global theme, the event was all about interaction, with brand owners, packaging and technology suppliers, sharing and finding ways to collaborate and innovate effectively together.
on the future of digital printing, sharing a vision of delivering more agility to retail and their packaged products suppliers together. As for changing distribution models, keynote presenter Aline Clavellina, Marketing Vice President Grupo Bimbo presented unexpected success following a promotion campaign with Justin Bieber eating one of their snacks. As the Justin Bieber global fan base started ordering their hero’s snack, Grupo Bimbo did not have a distribution channel in place and turned to Amazon.com to fill the gaps. The lesson is that packaged product manufacturers have to prepare for Web Retail Packaging (WRP) ensuring that they can meet global online demand also via new distribution channels. The final trend identified was sustainable development in packaged products: “Recyclability of the empties package is important but how often can packaging materials be recycled and at which cost?” asked Mr Nieuwesteeg. “Today we don’t think long term enough. We try to recycle once, but what happens next? It is better to think about sustainable development from conception all through the entire supply chain.” Mr. Nieuwesteeg also facilitated a highly valuable networking experience that saw
senior decision makers from the world’s leading FMCG manufacturers interact with each other and with experts to more effectively address industry challenges as they arise. “The interaction with the brand owner community presented by this networking forum was highly valuable,” commented guest speaker and 7th year in the row delegate Arno Melchior, Global Packaging Director, Reckitt Benckister. While first time attendees Nicolas Egri, Senior Packaging Engineer, Godiva Belgium, was particularly interested in hearing about the new products on the market and Laura Catala, R&D Research Technician Packaging, Gallina Blanca, took the opportunity to learn more about the challenges and trends in packaging and to search for new solutions to optimize her business and make it more profitable. Mike Horsten, Marketing Manager EMEA Mimaki, was another first time attendee. The company is looking at the opportunities presented by the packaging market and how to build more visibility and brand recognition: “These kinds of events are perfect launch platforms to get acquainted, explore and discuss new application possibilities,” he concluded.
Mr. Nieuwesteeg commented: “Globalisation is making packaging design more challenging. Regional differences and regulations must be dealt with, however at the same time the internet exposes any mistakes or inconsistencies immediately. Managing brand consistency and quality standards has become extremely complex, creating the necessity for cloud-based intelligent graphic workflow management.” The session on how to build a brand using exciting integrated cross-media and packaging campaigns touched on the much-publicised Coca Cola campaign in Europe that used personalised labels and a discussion of Heineken’s customer engagement strategy. All suppliers of digital printing equipment, including HP, Océ and Mimaki pooled their resources in a workshop

The JV33 just got faster: Mimaki delivers another innovation at C!Print Mimaki Engineering, manufacturer of wide format inkjet printers, introduced the enhanced version of the JV33 series at C!Print in Lyon, France. Focused on bringing new ideas, new applications and new markets to providers of printing services, the show was held from 4 through 6 February. In the run up to FESPA Digital 2014, Mimaki also presented the French market with an exclusive launch of the enhanced solvent JV33, Mimaki’s work horse in its solvent inkjet product line. “Salon C!Print is co-located with CTCO for promotional products and promotional textiles,” said Mike Horsten, General Manager Marketing EMEA, Mimaki Europe B.V. “At the C!Print area, visitors to our booth found solutions that are applicable to promotional products and textiles as well. But above all, we’re very excited about introducing the updated version of our industry leading JV33 solvent inkjet printer, which will give our customers more speed and quality for the same price.” Mimaki also participated in NOVA Live, located at the centre of the hall. NOVA Live showcased live technical demonstrations and many applications created by the exhibitors. Mimaki printed with its TS341800A dye sublimation printer on sublimation paper which was then further processed by other exhibitors to create a finished product. “We always find that these multi-vendor live demonstrations draw a great deal of attention at shows,” Horsten added. “Attendees almost always work in a multi-vendor environment, and demonstrations such as these allow
them to see the production of an application from end-to-end as though it were being produced in their own shop.”
Better and faster - JV33 series The new JV33 is an updated version of Mimaki’s top selling JV33 roll-to-roll series of solvent inkjet products. With the exclusive launch of this new development at C!Print, the show attendees were the first to view this exciting new product. A key enhancement is the addition of Mimaki Advanced Pass System (MAPS) technology, which is an innovative approach to discharging ink droplets to minimize, or even eliminate, banding in high production mode. MAPS is highly configurable to adjust the jetting process to meet specific production needs including adjustments to print speeds. The MAPS system will allow at least a 10% speed increase to the already fast printing solution and will function with all ink sets. Mimaki JV33 is available immediately in the EMEA region for distribution.
Personalising Promotional Products Mimaki also demonstrated the personalisation of promotional products at the show. This includes personalisation of promotional products using Mimaki’s UJF-3042 and UJF-6042. These UV flatbed printers with LED curing and multiple ink options print in near photo quality directly on substrates up to 150mm thick with a precise and vivid image quality that is normally only found in more costly printers. These printers support 6 colors and white ink.
