FROM THE EDITORS’ DESK Dear Readers, Print has got its ‘mojo’ back. According to Sabine Geldermann, Director drupa, Messe Duesseldorf, “Recruited from senior managers who visited drupa last year, almost 850 printers and over 300 suppliers representing all regions and markets participated in the survey run by Printfuture, the specialist print consultancy and market research company. “All printers, whatever market or region they are based in, know that if they are to succeed in the long term, they must continue to adapt to the ever changing market and economic conditions. This needs a ruthless approach to efficiency and automation while at the same time learning new skills and adding new added value services. Nevertheless it is pleasing to report that overall, print has got its ‘mojo’ back.” The 4th annual Global Trends report gives the detailed evidence to support the thesis that globally Print is recovering well from the double challenge of the 2007/8 economic crisis and the strategic shift towards digital communications. Talking further on trends, the Partica technology has been developed to enable printers to offer a solution to publishers to enable them to have their content prepared for both print and mobile platforms from the same print ready PDF. It allows printers to develop closer ties with publishers through offering them a clear added value service to meet a real need, mobile friendly publishing. Print-to-Mobile launches to success New Aussie print to mobile technology Partica scores major win in subcontinent Innovative Australian print-to-mobile mobile tech provider Radiaca has closed its first major deal with PRESSIdeas Publishing. The Partica technology reformats print publication files (PDFs) into a mobile-friendly format able to be viewed on smartphones and tablets, and is one of the technologies offered as part of the Radiaca suite of solutions. PRESSIdeas takes Radiaca’s new Partica print to mobile technology into a marketplace of more than 300,000 Print and Publishing businesses. The Partica technology has been developed to enable printers to offer a solution to publishers to enable them to have their content prepared for both print and mobile platforms from the same print ready PDF. It will allow printers to develop closer ties with publishers through offering them a clear added value service to meet a real need, mobile friendly publishing. Richard Lindley, CTO of Radiaca says, “This is a momentous move for us and our partners, especially as content consumption trends which are heading strongly to mobile continue to boom. To keep up with a rapidly changing industry, India’s publishing community has the opportunity with Radiaca to get ahead of the market and attract new commercial opportunities with an innovative and intelligent mobile tech solution offering.” The Partica platform technology takes a PDF for print and designs streamlined,

translatable and mobile-friendly articles. Through the use of polls, surveys, calls to action and real-time feedback for customers, the in-built capabilities enhance two-way communication between printers and customers – closing the gap between the content consumer and brand owner and delivering real value for the publisher. Shankar Vishwanath, co-founder of Radiaca and CEO of Printer Magazines Group, says, “As the printing industry has declined over the past five years, with consumers increasingly seeking solutions through online platforms, Radiaca will help positively grow the print sector by tapping into new revenue streams for printers and enabling new ways of consuming print media. “This major deal is the first of many that we expect to be achieved, as printers come to realise the immense benefits that Partica provides to their publishing clients.” Jacob George, Marketing Director of PressIdeas Publishing, says, “To stay relevant, printers need to start thinking about how to reinvent themselves in a sector that is being disrupted. We are excited to bring Radiaca to the industry to enable businesses to embrace change and transform the way they operate.” For further information, visit: www.radiaca. com/pressideas/ or write to Jacob.radiaca@ gmail.com

Komori and SCREEN GP develop Integrated Workflow Solution - Improves Automation in Printing Processes that include combined Offset and Digital systems Komori Corporation and SCREEN Graphic and Precision Solutions (SCREEN GP) have completed development of a new integrated workflow solution that significantly enhances automation in all processes from prepress to printing and through to postpress. Komori and SCREEN GP have already installed the workflow at printing company Mizukami Insatsu and are currently performing verification tests. As client needs continue to diversify, printing companies are being forced to work to ever shorter deadlines. This has created a requirement for more efficient work processes that incorporate both offset and digital systems, making it possible to achieve optimal results for a variety of different needs. Komori and SCREEN GP have answered this call by developing a solution that combines KP-Connect Pro (formerly K-Station 4), Komori’s advanced printing task control software, and EQUIOS 5.0, the latest version of SCREEN GP’s universal workflow platform. This workflow is being used at the Mizukami Insatsu site to improve automation along a hybrid printing process that includes a PlateRite plate recorder, Lithrone G sheetfed offset press and Impremia IS29 29 inch sheet-fed UV inkjet digital printing system. These systems will also be linked to postpress devices via JDF, creating a workflow that supports comprehensive integrated control from prepress right through to postpress. Komori’s KP-Connect Pro (formerly K-Station 4) printing task control software is positioned between the MIS and production site, where it brings transparency to complex process information and allows all operators to share the latest production details. With its direct link to Komori’s production equipment, the software is able to automatically set work instructions and collect precise information on operating results. While it can easily be run from iPads or other tablet devices, its schedule creation/transmission and result collection functions enable sophisticated real-time control of all production devices.

10

February 2017

To develop its EQUIOS universal workflow, SCREEN GP drew on its extensive technical knowledge of prepress and printing processes and combined this with its expertise in cutting-edge inkjet technologies. This wealth of results-based experience gave rise to a highly professional technology that offers highspeed processing using the latest RIP core, colour management linked to paper information and imposition functions that integrate SCREEN’s full prepress knowhow, allowing it to function as a control center for a wide range of print devices. In short, EQUIOS helps to create an environment in which any printing system can produce outstanding quality, performance and stability even for relatively inexperienced operators. Komori and SCREEN GP plan to continue their current technical cooperation as they work to provide further optimized solutions to the printing industry’s need to handle increasingly diversified, shortturnaround jobs. Both companies are also fully committed to maintaining their efforts to promote continuing growth of the overall printing industry. Katsuya Kawai, President of Mizukami Insatsu comments: “One of the prime goals we are promoting is the creation of a design for a smart factory by 2025. All devices, peripherals and processes will be connected using IoT concepts, enabling dramatically improved transparency of realtime operations. A single operator will control multiple systems, part-time employees, AI and robotics. Our vision is to create a smart factory that uses next-generation printing logistics to achieve a truly new dimension of productivity. The verification project currently being performed with Komori and SCREEN GP is basically the first step toward realizing this vision. I am looking forward to even greater cooperation between printing

companies and equipment manufacturers as we move forward. This will enable us to develop the optimal type of facilities we require for the future.” Eiji Kajita, Director and Operating Officer and General Manager, Corporate Planning Office, Komori Corporation comments: “I firmly believe the next-generation integrated workflow solution formed by EQUIOS and KP-Connect Pro will help to significantly improve the optimization and performance of prepress and press operations, and in fact the entire printing process. We are currently performing verification tests of this workflow at Mizukami Insatsu, a highly progressive company that operates print lines including combined offset and digital systems. It fills me with great pride to be able to make this announcement.” Tsuneo Baba, President of SCREEN Graphic and Precision Solutions adds: “I am delighted with the integrated workflow we have been able to create by combining the latest version of EQUIOS with KPConnect Pro. It has allowed the creation of a comprehensive solution platform that will help to address a wide range of printing needs. With its installation at Mizukami Insatsu, the workflow is expected to make a major contribution to automation along the entire printing process. I am also confident this and future technical collaborations between Komori and SCREEN GP will become a major source of innovation for the whole printing industry.”

Out soon: 4th drupa Global trends Report 2017 General confidence amongst printers and suppliers for 2017 but mixed fortunes for markets and regions alike Following the successful drupa in Spring 2016, this 4th annual Global Trends report gives the detailed evidence to support the thesis that globally Print is recovering well from the double challenge of the 2007/8 economic crisis and the strategic shift towards digital communications. Sabine Geldermann, Director drupa, Messe Duesseldorf, said, “Last year’s drupa showcased a global print industry that has regained its confidence in the future, with lots of fresh technology and applications demonstrated to enthuse both printers and their customers alike. This report shows that whilst levels of confidence vary between regions and markets, overall the print industry is on the up and will invest strongly to secure a prosperous future.” Recruited from senior managers who visited drupa last year, almost 850 printers and over 300 suppliers representing all regions and markets participated in the survey run by Printfuture, the specialist print consultancy and market research company. “All printers, whatever market or region they are based in, know that if they are to succeed in the long term, they must continue to adapt to the ever changing market and economic conditions. This needs a ruthless approach to efficiency and automation while at the same time learning new skills and adding new added value services. Nevertheless it is pleasing to report that overall, print has got its ‘mojo’ back.”

General confidence amongst printers and suppliers for 2017 Globally 42% of printers described their business as in a ‘good’ economic condition in 2016, with just 11% reporting it as ‘poor’, a net balance of +31%, the highest recorded global result of the report series. Prospects for 2017 are better with a net balance of +46%. However market variances and regional variances are growing. Packaging at +39% net balance and Functional (Industrial/ Decorative) at +34% are strongest while Commercial at +26% and Publishing at 23%

follow behind. North America once again is the strongest region with a net balance of +49%, followed by Europe and Australia/ Oceania at +33%, Central/South America at +29%, Asia at +20%, the Middle East at 19% and Africa at -3%, the first negative net balance of the report series. Indeed on many measures, the Middle East reported a very poor condition, while Africa and Central/ South America reported fragile conditions. Looking at the underlying financial performance figures, printers reported a well-established pattern of falling prices and squeezed margins, compensated for by increasing revenues assisted by higher utilisation. In terms of conventional print, the well-established trends continued of falling run lengths and lead times and an increasing number of jobs to be handled.

Notable pause reported in the growth of digital print and a clear fall in the number of Web to print installations What was different this year was a possible pause in the historic rise in the proportion of turnover that is digital print (28% of printers in 2015 reported that more than 25% of their turnover was digital while the figure for 2016 was 27%). Nevertheless digital print has an ever-increasing hold on Functional print with inkjet the dominant technology for most applications, up from 61% in 2014 to 74% in 2016. Similarly digital continues to grow rapidly in Commercial print e.g. wide format print installations up from 37% in 2013 to 50% in 2016. The much talked of growth of digitally printed packaging is starting, with 34% of packaging printers offering digital print, up from 24% in 2014, although demand is patchy as yet.

11% spent less, a net balance of +31%, and there was a net balance of +41% in respect of plans for 2017. This positive story was true for most regions, the exception being the Middle East where there was a new low for the report series of just +5% in 2016. For the first time the No. 1 priority globally was Finishing, followed closely by new Presses. That in turn was closely followed by PrePress/ Workflow/MIS; a sign that automation is being taken seriously. As for press investment plans, Sheetfed litho led the global race followed by Digital toner cutsheet colour. But what was another first for the report series, each of the four markets had a different No. 1 press investment priority – Commercial, Digital toner cutsheet colour; Publishing, Sheetfed offset; Packaging, Flexo and Functional, Digital inkjet rollfed colour.

Obtaining the full reports. The full report will be released in English in a few weeks; the Executive Summary will be available in seven languages (German, English, French, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish and Chinese). The three annual drupa Global Trends reports are complemented two drupa Global Insights reports, which focus on technical trends and changes. The first of these, “The Impact of the Internet on Print - The digital flood,” assessed the important and effect of new online media. The second report, “Touch the future – Applications that can create growth,” was published in November 2015. All reports are available for download from the drupa website.

Even more striking was the clear fall in the number of Web to print installations globally down from 26% in 2015 to 23% in 2016. This decline was not universal eg in Asia it rose, but in some regions eg North America and Australia/Oceania, the fall was decisive. Turning to capital investment plans, 42% spent more over the last 12 months and just

AGS believes in efficient production and its solutions enable efficient production. Saving costs in today’s diminishing margins, especially in the printing industry, is extremely essential to optimize business. Whether it’s saving on energy, material, manpower, equipment or any part of the workflow, it is ultimately earning, says Vishnuu R Kamat, Advanced Graphics System (AGS). “Our solutions let customers save on paper cost, ink cost, manpower and energy etc. Apart from turning it into profitability, the users can educate

their customers and educate them on the benefits they can have by way of consistent quality and speedy deliveries. As we know the early bird gets the worm, the early adopter of advanced technologies leads the lot. For example, a pharma brand comes to know that a certain printer has got Tec4Check’s solution installed. He is more likely to come to him for its printing needs since a good part of the brand’s job has also been done by the printer. Moreover, the printer is providing the brand the PDF report that meets internationally compliant checking standards,” he continues. Tec4Check enables reliable checks of produced printing products. MediaCheck by Tec4Check identifies deviations during the complete process. It enables users to compare the first and the last print sheet with the approved PDF from the customer. In the prepress the production PDF can be compared with the reference PDF. The quality control happens at the point where deviations occur. Not only does it save time and costs, but also enables users demonstrate documented quality control to their customers. Tec4Check has an impressive installation base in India with quite a few repeat installations as well. Temple Packaging has MediaCheck running at their four locations. Similarly, Award Packaging has installed at its both Silvassa and Mahape facilities. Other customers are also leading Indian printers like Printmann, Mylan and FDC among others. They have over 15 Tec4Check installations in the country.

manroland expands into Services space Sudeep Bhattacharjee, manroland India speaks about manroland’s new focus areas and changing trends in the newspapers market.

“Digital media doesn’t seem to be a reason for panic right now and there is still a lot of space for newspapers to grow,” observed Sudeep Bhattacharjee, manroland India during an exclusive talk with PRESSIdeas at PrintPack India 2017.

Newspaper market in India

manroland is looking at how to make printing presses more intelligent. Backed by manroland expert support and engineering services, its putting advanced control equipments and management systems along with putting data to optimum use and facilitate more predictive maintenance.

Key Notes : > Newspapers looking at expansion; consolidations taking place across the industry. > manroland adopts Service models; provides solutions for existing presses. > New Online Store for enhanced user experience.

February 2017

“I have been talking to a lot of people coming to the show. People of smaller towns told that there is no electricity. The mobile phone use figures in the country largely don’t represent the smartphones which are the actual means of digitalization or turning users into digital media consumers,” he explains. In the so called Digital wave, although mobile phone penetration is quoted as big percentage of Indian population, only a marginal number there owns smartphones. So, Digitalization will take a lot of time to catch up with print media especially newspapers. Similarly, in larger towns and cities, consolidations are taking place in almost every sphere. Even big players, though not at the same pace as earlier, are looking at expansion. However, it’s unlike the US or European markets where newspapers have seen a significant fall. In India if we look at the newspaper market last year, there has been growth but there have been lot of consolidations. A lot of people have been looking at their operations and considering the profitability and viability of their units etc.

manroland plans to answer changing trends manroland recently devised a strategy in their European markets concerning its different businesses including newspapers, commercial, web offset, accessories and consumables etc. They also observed that though the Packaging market is growing, the overall market for new equipment sale in Web Offset has shrunk. Apart from these, the Services industry is not only growing, but it is now the larger part of the industry’s business. The strategy got devised around this aspect and manroland have adopted various models in the Service sphere. “Today we can’t say that we are interested only in selling new equipments. We are also looking into areas like accessories, modular solutions, upgrade for existing set-ups, workflows and a lot more,” says Sudeep. Incidentally, manroland India has been behind the recent idea of selling Automatic Registration System for existing presses of manroland as well as other brands. It took off in Indian market and is likely to be up for following in the European and other markets. Similarly, manroland is providing its other popular solutions like Density Control System and the PECOM System. “Another thing that is very popular in the US and Europe is, equipping presses of any make with Press Management System from manroland. So, when we say, newspaper market is going down, we say it about new equipment.

pressideas/ event review

We don’t say it about Service space. The business prospects in Services can be termed as disruptive business. For example, we have Auto Registration, Blanket Wash, Print Management and many such solutions already in our stable. What we are doing today is trying to modify our design a bit to fit existing machines and equipments. Similarly, we are looking at upgrading our Store. We have an altogether new Online Store for enhanced user experience,” continues Sudeep. The retrofit of the PECOM system ensures press availability. Besides the operators and other employees are offered new processes that lighten their workloads. Obviously, they get benefitted from new functions such as the PECOM Press-Manager (PPM) for the realtime capture and evaluation of production data. Automation aids such as the Autocycle function for image refinement, Waste Detection Control for separating out waste, and error message visualization are also available. Overall production stability is increased via a secure power supply, high-performance computing, and modern data storage and an integrated backup system which can be switched over fast and reliably via USB Dongle. Various benefits include: Integration of the PressMonitor; energy saving Control Console System; and Integrated backup system.

Affordable solution for perfect ink density A no-holds-barred commitment to quality for cost-sensitive projects: IDCm ink density control employs a traversing module to measure real-time ink density values. As an inexpensive upgrade for existing commercial presses, IDCm achieves the tried and tested measurement quality of Inline Control systems from manroland web systems. InlineDensity Control (IDC) controls ink density based on colour marks in a print control strip. Unlike the stationary cameras used for IDC, the IDCm (motorized) model uses traversing measurement modules. IDCm can be fully integrated in the PECOM-X environment or used as a stand-alone solution. The latter variant can be used for easy retrofits on existing equipment, since it requires no software changes, for example on the press control console. All variants of IDCm achieve high process stability and save material and manpower. This is ensured by ultra-precise density measurement with standardized illumination and polarizing filters. The low-maintenance IDCm is available for all web widths.

to make printing presses more intelligent. They are not only putting advanced control equipments and management systems but also putting data to optimum use so as to facilitate more predictive maintenance. Of course, it is backed by manroland expert support and engineering services. Nevertheless, the basic business for manroland is very much there with machines and equipments being provided to customers in every part of the globe. “Our basic business goes by the slogan – ‘The Last Man Standing’. This slogan has made us not only depend on our equipment business but also to keep changing with time,” emphasizes Sudeep. The last but not the least is the manroland consumables business under printcom. manroland head office has left this business to each market organization. printcom supplies customers with extensively tested, certified and process-compliant system components to further refine and optimise their printing systems. The products offered under printcom are Blankets, Coatings, Fountain Solutions, Lubricants, Printing Inks, Rollers, Silicones, Washes and Special Chemistry.

Making Presses more intelligent Another thing manroland is looking at is how

February 2017

Xerox has launched its C70 powered with new Fiery FS200 and FS200 Pro software. Apart from the new Fiery power, the Xerox C70 comes with new enhancements over its already popular predecessor in the country. The C70 already features unique attributes like up to 45 percent power saving capabilities, low heat emission enabled by its low melt toner technology. Media handling has been enormously enhanced in the new C70. From 300gsm simplex to 250gsm duplex, it now has a long list of media compatibility ranging from photo media to those for magazine, commercial and other documents. Xerox has particularly taken care of the feedback it got from practical use of the machine and has now incorporated them to give a better and enhanced real time experience to customers. It’s a pretty nice package with Fiery capabilities, improved

media handling and saving on power and cost to help those who are looking at the entry production space. Xerox brings the C60/70 series with 60ppm and 70ppm capabilities. Now, with the new C70, it presents an opportunity for all previous users of C60 to consider an upgrade to 70ppm platform as well with the bonus of enhanced capabilities. Xerox Versant 80 is the flagship product from Xerox with a leading market share in mid-production segment, not only in India but also in the DMO (Developing Markets’ Organization – a group of over 150 countries). The Versant 80 with banner printing option is pretty popular with printers who have gained a lot on profitability, quality, customer confidence and repeat business. Adding about C70, Balaji says that this is one product which has been recognized as a product of choice by test labs. “Production printers have always been appreciative of consistency and stability of the quality along with reliability, which are very important aspects from a customer’s point of view. India being a jobwork community, the print quality consistency can really give the power to the printer especially the test labs,” he asserts.

Futuristic FreeFlow Balaji terms their new focus area as the ‘win-win-win’

Book printing but also in Publishing and Variable Data Printing space. The versatile machine is capable of delivering same high standards in printing of all these products. The Xerox D series is for customers who are looking for a printing solution where space is limited. The series offers good price advantage and digital capabilities like variable data printing in the Light Monochrome production environments. It complements Xerox’s vast monochrome line up.

situation. “With the FreeFlow now being given to Fiery, it’s a win-win situation for Xerox, Fiery as well as the customer,” he explains. The FreeFlow has lot of futuristic features. FreeFlow has got Fiery capabilities, that are unmatched especially in Digital Front End space. The ultimate winner is customer who has the greater and combined advantage of FreeFlow and Fiery. Indian print industry especially the labs, job printers, offset printers etc. all need reliability, consistency in quality and media handling as key requirements in any equipment. If a printer wants all these and gets a fantastic workflow to streamline all these jobs, it’s a huge advantage in terms of efficiency and output. “The workflow makes all the difference if we are opting for a different speed machine as per our requirement. All that’s gained on speed of a machine can eventually be lost if the workflow support is not as smooth (as a Fiery enabled FreeFlow is). Xerox is proud to offer its customers a Fiery powered print engine and FreeFlow workflow as per individual requirement. Our aim remains to give peace of mind to customers while using Xerox solutions and we ensure they get their return efficiently. “Our concentration remains on making this aspect of Xerox solutions stronger by each day and that is what keeps Xerox ahead of its competition.”

Nuvera leads the high-end focus The high-end focus of Xerox has been reaping huge success for the company. The Xerox 1000, Nuvera etc. all are doing tremendous business. Apart from leading players in India, world over, high-end print production machines from Xerox are proving their unique capabilities especially in the security printing area. Nuvera has

been extremely well. “Post demonetization, Nuvera has seen good growth. There’s no other machine in the world with Nuvera like capabilities. We are the world leader in this space. Security printing like Cheque Book printing is the forte of Nuvera which is simply unmatched anywhere,” says Balaji. There are many customers who have placed repeat orders for this highly capable machine. Manipal of India has increased its lineup to double digit numbers in a short span of just one and a half years. There are other customers, not only in Security or Cheque

Xerox 1000 covers the high-end colour digital printing space. Then there is iGen workhorse. All these solutions offered at the PrintPack India 2017 are part of Xerox’s continuous development that features new products and customers can expect more from this Digital Printing major in future months. Balaji agrees that the demonetization had its effects on the industry. Xerox got the advantage of Nuvera which helped it keep the sales rolling. Things are approaching towards normal pace. He sees the advantages of cashless economy and opportunities thereof. Another thing he looks forward to is GST, which, he says, would standardize taxation across states and provide benefits of logistics to customers’ advantage.

FINAT RADAR: The European label industry’s in-depth market analysis A unique, in-depth profile of the complex and diversified label industry in Europe is provided twice yearly to its members by the international label association FINAT. The aptly-named FINAT RADAR brings together focused research and analysis, conducted by market research company LPC Inc, on factors in the current marketplace that are impacting the label supply chain, from raw material suppliers to label converters and

customers of the industry. The recently published sixth edition of FINAT RADAR focused specifically on the crucial – and fastchanging – viewpoint of label end users. FINAT President Thomas Hagmaier adds another option highlighted by the latest FINAT RADAR: “The tremendous leaps that have been made in the digital printing arena are, of course, bringing flexibility for highquality short-run print to the label industry too, and brand owners indicated they expect to procure 5% more digital print solutions in the coming year. This is a reflection of the trend we are seeing to reducing the size of label print runs for just-in-time delivery, increased multi-versioning, and, of course the current fashion for personalisation.” As an in-depth, reliable portrait of current status in the label industry, FINAT RADAR is

now recognised by members as a valuable complement to the association’s extensive portfolio of industry-standard technical publications and its programme of annual events, which include the top-level FINAT European Label Forum (June 7-9 2017, Berlin) and the FINAT Young Managers Club Congress 2017 (22-24 March 2017, Lisbon), bringing together tomorrow’s leaders in this strong market sector.

Xerox Color C70 capabilities •

The software updates and feature enhancements makes Xerox Color C70 Printer a cost-effective digital printing option for a wide range of printing needs, opening up application opportunities to print environments of any size, inclusive of synthetics, rugged polyester labels, menus, carbonless paper, never-tear paper, transfer papers, magnets, signs and vinyl window clings. The Xerox C70 unique EA Toner with Ultra Low Melt technology, fuses the image to synthetic media in a chemically bonding way. It also provides excellent cost saving capabilities by reducing power consumption in standby mode by 44% compared to a resistance heating device and consumes 1/6th of the total energy consumed by most of the digital press available in this segment. When printing on certain specialty media such as textured linens, polyesters, and other heavyweight substrates, the new Optimal Print Quality Mode can be used. This will produce higher gloss output with optimal image quality. This mode is selectable via the Optimal Print Quality Button located on the RIP.

The Xerox Color C70 was awarded the 2016 Buyers Laboratory Production Printer PRO Award for its reliability and above average color stability on both uncoated and coated media. It now offers even greater accuracy and media flexibility. It would be available in India through Xerox’s extensive channel partner network of 150.

Xerox: Inkjet is a reality for all Print Providers now High Fusion Ink opens door to printing on standard Offset coated stock Early adopters of Xerox’s inkjet technology say they are seeing measurable business results such as increased page volumes, savings from printing on standard offset coated stocks, and faster turnaround on high-volume transactional print jobs. The Xerox entry inkjet portfolio featured at Hunkeler Innovationdays (HID) in Lucerne, Switzerland from Feb. 20-23, 2017 includes: • Xerox Brenva HD Production Inkjet Press – cut sheet inkjet. • Xerox Trivor 2400 Inkjet Press – continuous feed inkjet with Xerox High Fusion Ink. • Xerox Rialto 900 Inkjet Press – narrow web roll-to-cut sheet inkjet. Xerox’s lower cost systems make inkjet more accessible and open new business opportunities for print providers. Throughout HID, Xerox will showcase how its inkjet solutions enable customers to move into today’s biggest growth areas including catalogues, books, transactional and direct mail. “The inkjet opportunity is no longer on the horizon – it’s here right now,” said Andrew Copley, president, Graphic Communications Solutions, Xerox. “With our next generation production inkjet presses, customers get the right technology at less cost and space of traditional inkjet presses.”

Ramping up direct mail and transactional with Brenva HD UK-based print, mail and digital communications provider McLays bought the Brenva HD to expand their direct mail and

transactional applications. In the first month of production, page volume increased 15 percent, hitting up to 150,000 pages per day on peak days. “We produced more than 1.5 million pages in January with Brenva HD and are confident that we can double that figure in the coming months as the machine moves into 24-hour print production,” said Gary Wheeler, direct manufacturing manager, McLays. “The press performs extremely well with low coverage, light tints and sharp black text, which are critical in our transactional business.”

Inkjet printing on standard offset coated stocks with High Fusion Ink and Trivor 2400 Belgium-based print provider, VPrint, wanted to add more personalization and quality to its large-volume direct mail business without the cost of using specialty stock made for inkjet printing. The company has been testing the Trivor 2400 paired withHigh Fusion Ink. “We wanted to print on standard offset coated stock, with offset quality and volume but with all the benefits of production inkjet,”said Thierry Ngoma, plant manager, VPrint. “So far High Fusion Ink and the Trivor 2400 are meeting our expectations – delivering brilliant color, high speed and the savings from using standard offset coated stocks without the need for any pre or post treatment.”

Finishing options boost productivity on Rialto 900

900 with two new inline finishing options: a dynamic perforator and second dual high capacity stacker. The dynamic perforator enables the creation of horizontal, vertical or t-section tear offs – such as coupons, reply cards and payment stubs – opening up new opportunities in the transactional and direct mail markets. Additionally, a second dual high capacity stacker enables a continuous operation feature so print providers can keep presses running while unloading the other stacker. These options build on the breakthrough in inkjet innovation of the Rialto 900 introduced at HID two years ago. Today, many print providers use the press to deliver everything from mono book pages to high-quality direct mail applications. UK-based commercial printer Datagraphic has two Rialto 900 presses that produce minute-critical, data-driven transactional print for enterprises across the public and private sectors. “We deliver daily communications, which often need to be printed and processed within hours and the Rialto 900 enables us to produce high-volume, same-day dispatches of business quality documents within a narrow timeframe,” said Robert Hoon, managing director, Datagraphic.

During HID, Xerox showcased the Rialto In addition to Brenva HD, Trivor 2400 with High Fusion Ink and Rialto 900, Xerox FreeFlow Core, Xerox FreeFlow Digital Publisher, XMPie PersonalEffect suite, XMPie Circle and XMPie Campaigns-on-Demand were also on display at the show. The stand also featured various application areas and business development resources.

Xerox India on Budget 2017 Ashraf ElArman, Managing Director, Xerox India calls the Indian Budget 2017 a progressive budget Xerox Corporation is an $11 billion technology leader that innovates the way the world communicates, connects and works. Our expertise is more important than ever as customers of all sizes look to improve productivity, maximize profitability and increase satisfaction. We do this for small and mid-size businesses, large enterprises, governments, graphic communications providers, and for our partners who serve them. “The budget has introduced new avenues for digital payments, skill development and taxation which will help the us to continue our growth curve. We see an opportunity in hiring well equipped talent in 2017 given the heightened focus on providing market ready skill sets to the youth of the nation. With the GST Council finalizing recommendations,

its implementation as per the deadline will most likely result into a lower service tax rate & ease the way we do business in India and create ground for innovation. This will definitely help in IT penetration and also increased uptake amongst SMEs. The budget also continued to focus on both physical and digital infrastructure, but was limited to new developments in the digital payments segment rather than the government’s earlier aim to establish a comprehensive digital depository. Additionally, the Government eMaketplace initiative was also given a miss – something that was established to bring greater transparency & efficiency in public procurement last year. On a positive note, we see the government’s remonetisation efforts lower borrowing costs and increase

the access to credit to businesses and individuals alike. Overall, it is a progressive budget, something that the Indian Information Technology industry can build on in the coming months.” Ashraf ElArman, Managing Director, Xerox India

Xerox and EFI partner to give customers best in class digital front ends Xerox Corporation and Electronics For Imaging (EFI) have announced a strategic partnership to bring to market a next generation digital front end (DFE) to drive Xerox digital production presses. The agreement includes the sale of Xerox’s FreeFlow Print Server (FFPS) DFE business to EFI. Under the terms of the deal, EFI will continue to produce and support FFPS so current customers do not experience interruptions in sales or service.

“This next step in our strategic alliance will give customers the industry’s highest performing DFE with unparalleled imaging and color management,” said Guy Gecht, CEO of EFI. “EFI integration among the DFE, workflow software, and management information systems products deliver the higher levels of automation and productivity that are key to print businesses taking full advantage of the opportunities with digital printing.”

“Customers will gain a powerful solution with more efficiencies, performance and quality to meet the most demanding production requirements,” said Andrew Copley, president, Graphic Communications Solutions, Xerox. “EFI is an industry leader and has a proven track record with performance, ease of use and seamless integration with industry workflow solutions.”

Xerox and EFI have established a longstanding partnership. Most recently, Xerox collaborated with EFI to develop a new print server, the Xerox IJ Print Server powered by Fiery, to drive the Xerox Trivor 2400 Inkjet Press. The DFE handles a range of data streams, while enabling integration, comprehensive color management and seamless integration with customer workflows.

Xerox’s expertise and unique functionality from FFPS will be integrated with EFI’s bestof-breed Fiery product, giving customers a market-leading offering. Customers will benefit from EFI sales and technical field resources working side-by-side with their Xerox sales reps to offer a best-in-class solution.

The next generation DFE coming from this partnership will be integrated with EFI’s market-leading Productivity Suites, which include management information systems such as PACE, PrintSmith Vision, Monarch, and Radius ERP. Additionally, the DFE will integrate with Xerox FreeFlow Core

and XMPie workflows as well as industryleading third-party prepress solutions such as Agfa Apogee, Heidelberg Prinect, and Kodak Prinergy. The Fiery DFE, which is the industry’s only JDF certified DFE, will also offer a modern API to allow customers to easily develop integration to any customized applications. The agreement is for FFPS only and does not impact the Xerox workflow solutions that carry a FreeFlow sub-brand name (FreeFlow Core, FreeFlow VI Suite, FreeFlow Makeready and FreeFlow Digital Publisher). The workflow solutions will remain independent key planks for Xerox customers’ workflow strategy. “This acquisition by EFI is beneficial to both parties. EFI gains important intellectual property as well as the flexibility to integrate it tightly with its own Fiery assets,” said Jim Hamilton, group director, InfoTrends, a division of Keypoint Intelligence. “For Xerox the move transfers the development and support of FFPS to an acknowledged market leader. The move strengthens an already strong relationship and opens up new possibilities for future offerings.”

Kodak at Hunkeler Innovation Days 2017 Showcases latest advances in Stream and ULTRASTREAM Inkjet Technology Visitors to Kodak’s stand (Hall 2, Stand P01) at Hunkeler Innovation Days saw how the latest advances in the company’s Stream and ULTRASTREAM Technology create new opportunities in digital printing, including a wider range of applications and substrates that can be utilised. Prototypes and various configurations of KODAK ULTRASTREAM Technology were on show and visitors viewed a range of printed samples to compare the advanced quality to offset printing. Since its debut at drupa 2016, market response to ULTRASTREAM Technology has been extremely positive. Seventeen OEMs, including Fuji Kikai, GOSS China, Manroland, Matti, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Printing & Packaging Machinery (MHI-PPM) and Uteco, have already signed letters of Intent to explore the integration of ULTRASTREAM into their future printing solutions. Norifumi Tasaka, General Manager, Development Headquarters Quality Assurance Department, MHI-PPM, comments: “The integration of digital print technology into the MHI-PPM portfolio requires high quality, with compelling running costs and great productivity. After evaluating various print head technologies, we decided to move forward with a Letter of Intent to assess the next generation technology, ULTRASTREAM, from Kodak. Based on the demonstrations at drupa 2016, we are confident that this technology provides a candidate in class solution for our portfolio which will meet and exceed our customers’ expectations.”

ULTRASTREAM Technology leverages the proven benefits of Stream’s unique drop generation technology, producing round, uniform, satellite-free dots at a rate that is 10 times faster than drop-on-demand using a single array of printheads. The modular writing system, available in widths of 8” to 98” to suit specific applications, will enable high resolution printing of 600 x 1800 dpi at speeds of up to 150 m/min (500 ft/min) on the widest array of paper and plastic substrates. Steinemann took advantage of the Hunkeler Innovation Days 2017 in Lucerne to introduce customers to the dfoil system at its information stand in Hall 1, where it exhibited samples that demonstrated the high quality embossing effects of this new option for the dmax product line. “Over 40 years after the invention of UV coating in the printing industry, Steinemann now offers industrialscale print finishing based on a combination of digital coating and digital foil stamping in a single, highly productive system. The dmax systems equipped with dfoil apply spot and relief coatings as well as foil in a single pass. Brochures, financial reports, flyers, greeting cards, packaging: Customers who expand their dmax systems to include dfoil can more efficiently than ever meet the rising demand in the market for premium, highly flexible print finishing,” says Ludwig Allgoewer, head of Finishing at Steinemann Technology in St. Gallen, Switzerland, describing the technical breakthrough his company has made with its innovative digital foil stamping technology. Digital foil stamping is another

application of the digital coating technology developed jointly with Schmid Rhyner AG, a leading UV coating specialist. With short make-ready times, dfoil achieves both flat and gradually raised foil application with embossing effects. The foil tension is controlled automatically, while high-performance indexing systems ensure optimum foil utilisation and thus the cost-efficiency of the foil stamping process. Digital foil stamping with dfoil requires no dies whatsoever, a fact that further enhances the cost-efficiency of the process and its convenience for machine operators. An optional, electrical, built-in lifting device can further improve ease-of-operation and make-ready times by rapidly extending and retracting the foil rollers at the push of a button. The dmax series of digital coating machines currently comprises a variety of high-performance models in widths of 76 cm and 106 cm. Optional equipment for expanding their functions includes a roller-type coating unit that enables customers to flexibly select between the digital spot or flood application of glossy, matte or soft-touch coatings and primers to suite the requirements of various jobs. With this multifunctionality, the dmax systems can be put to flexible use for a wide range of applications. Thanks to its modular design, customers can adopt entrylevel digital dmax technology at low cost and expand over time. Steinemann headquarters in St. Gallen (Switzerland) and has subsidiaries in China, Malaysia, Brazil, Russia and the USA. Operating around the world under the name Steinemann Technology AG, the Mechanical Engineering business unit of the Stürm Group offers a comprehensive portfolio of innovative sanding systems for customers in the wood panel industry, as well as coating systems for finishing print products. New KBA Rapida 75 PRO at Eberle Druck in Vienna Efficient half-format printing for the pharmaceuticals industry A KBA Rapida 75 went into production at Eberle Druck, a subsidiary of the Rattpack group, back in 2011. And it served the company well over the years. From lightweight paper through to cartonboard, substrates of all kinds were printed in excellent quality, often around the clock in up to four shifts. For work on the short-run pharmaceuticals market, however, the job changeover times of the sparingly automated Rapida 75 were proving too long. But given the otherwise very positive experience with the press, it seemed only logical to invest in a Rapida again. In this situation, the highly automated successor model Rapida 75 PRO was launched at just the right moment at drupa 2016. The new Rapida 75 PRO, a six-colour coater press with extended delivery, was commissioned in mid-June 2016. It is ideally equipped for the printing of pharmaceuticals packaging in short runs. The decisive features include 225 mm raised foundations to enable higher piles, an enlarged sheet format of 605 x 750 mm, central format setting, fully automatic FAPC plate changers, CleanTronic Synchro for parallel washing processes, QualiTronic ColorControl for inline colour measurement, and extensive preset capabilities.

Rapida 75 PRO replaces two presses After just eight months on stream, figures prove that the investment in the Rapida 75 PRO has certainly paid off: The dramatically shortened makeready times – now just five minutes compared to 15-20 minutes with the predecessor press – have boosted productivity by around 30 per cent. Thanks to the larger sheet format, furthermore, almost twice as many blanks can be accommodated on each sheet. QualiTronic ColorControl has also achieved significant reductions in waste. Especially where repeat jobs are the order of the day, inline colour control is a direct money earner. In addition to the original Rapida 75, Eberle Druck has in the meantime been able to decommission a second press – the Rapida 75 PRO sails through the jobs which used to run on both presses.

Peak production speeds play a subordinate role. Rattpack plant manager Marco Resch, who is responsible for both the Dornbirn and Vienna locations, explains: “For print jobs with an average of 250 to 500 sheets, fast makeready is much more valuable than a high production speed.” The facility to disengage unused inking units, on the other hand, is one of the most frequently exploited strengths of the press. In pharmaceuticals packaging, up to 60 per cent of the inks used are spot colours. Where others rely on Euroscale colours, the Rapida 75 PRO at Eberle Druck is often set up to use several or even exclusively spot colours.

Delighted operators The new press has delighted not only plant manager Marco Resch and commercial manager Simon Spiegel, but also the operators in the printshop. The ErgoTronic console with TouchTronic control and a generous wallscreen, in combination with

touchpanels at the feeder and delivery, ensures that all important information is made available instantly and in a readily understandable form. In addition, LogoTronic Professional provides a link between the Rapida 75 PRO and the company’s production planning system: A mouse click is all it takes to load the next job from the list presented on the console. Within the Rattpack Group, Eberle is responsible for the production of folding cartons for pharmaceuticals packaging, patient information leaflets and other special products for the pharmaceuticals industry (medical device sets, ampoule packs, mini-booklets, etc.). As an express service centre, furthermore, the company takes pride in its exceptional flexibility and fast delivery times. With around 500 employees at eight locations in Austria and Germany, the group generates an annual turnover of approx. €90 million.

CCL Label, the world’s largest, enters India! Pacman-CCL signs a binding agreement to acquire a majority stake in Super Labels. On the 2nd of February 2017, the world’s largest label printing company CCL announced their entry into India. CCL lead by Geoffery T Martin and headquartered in Toronto Canada has 2015 revenues reported at 3 Billion USD and a total workforce in excess of 19000 employees, operating out of 150 state of art manufacturing facilities spread over North America, Latin America, Europe, Asia, Australia and Africa.

Pacman-CCL signs binding agreement to acquire Super Labels CCL Industries, global provider of specialty label and packaging solutions for corporations, government institutions, small businesses and consumers, announced that the Pacman-CCL joint venture, headquartered in Dubai, has signed a binding agreement to acquire a 70% stake in privately owned Super Label, based in Mumbai. Closing is subject to customary procedures and is expected to conclude later this month. The company will continue to be headed by its founder, Bharat Mehta, and becomes part of Pacman-CCL trading under the CCL corporate identity system with immediate effect. Super Label focuses on pressure sensitive labels for large consumer products and healthcare customers with operations in India. Pacman-CCL will invest $3.75 million in the venture to acquire its stake, reduce debt and provide funding for future expansion. With plants in Dubai, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Egypt as well as India, the company is jointly owned by CCL and Albwardy Investment based in Dubai and headed by John Dawson, Managing Director. 2016 sales were approximately $50 million.

Geoffrey T. Martin, President and CEO of CCL, commented, “Over the last decade we looked many times at entering India through acquiring a local business. Super Label is one of the best managed we have seen, I believe this is the best way forward given Pacman-CCL’s proximity to the region. Our Indian Checkpoint subsidiaries remain separate to this venture, entirely under CCL control, focusing exclusively on Retail and Apparel markets.” CCL has been eyeing the Indian market for more than 6 years now. In its 21st March 2011 announcement, CCL Label Worldwide ruffled many feathers and set the ball rolling towards the current trend of JV’s and acquisitions. CCL label headquartered in Canada, employing 5800 employees at 61 locations around the world, acquired 50% stake in Dubai based Label Co. Pacman. It had also agreed to a prospective future Greenfield investment by Pacman- CCL in India. Though CCL has yet to announce their entry into India in label production yet leading Indian label manufacturers have opened their doors by either selling out or partnering with larger players. During Labelexpo 2013 at Brussels, Geoff Martin, Chairman of CCL Label, mentioned that they were looking for companies whose promoters had emotional dedication towards their venture. He was considering those who could manage their company well with vision to see their units and team prosper despite management changing hands. In December 2015 Guenther Birkner, now the President, Healthcare and Specialty business at CCL visited Mumbai and the news spread everywhere that CCL had signed up to acquire controlling interest in Bharat Mehta lead Super Labels in Mumbai. However, there was no official announcement. After CCL took over Checkpoint systems, it was more evident that CCL now has presence in India. CCL has formally announced its entry into label industry of India.

bought his first Siki Label press from Ahmedabad where it was being used to produce unsupported wet glue labels. Shifting over from a business in agricultural pumps at the age of 26, Bharat Mehta settled down perfectly in to his label printing business. He is one of the most respected label printers. From a single Siki he went on to add a fully loaded Gallus, an EM 280 8-colours, EM 280 6-colours, and an Acquaflex. He was the first in India to opt for a full UV label press. In the earlier part of the decade of 2000-2010 he lost heavily in a major fire but firm resolve brought him right back in what he liked best, “Producing self adhesive labels”. Soft spoken Bharat Mehta is both, the history and present of the Indian label industry. He is one of the first label printers in India and his Super Labels is one of the leading and respected label printing companies in Mumbai. His two sons joined him in business after completing their management studies. Indian label industry is growing for sure but most of our printers complain of intense competition and depleting margins. They are under pressure to service debt as they would ideally wish to do comfortably. They are in a dilemma on further expansion, especially when large multinational companies are investing into India. They wonder if the existing customer base and market will grow rapidly to provide enough opportunities for all or shrink by the incoming of foreign investors into labeling. My personal view is that with a growing literate population, low per capita usage at present and expanding retail, there will be enough business for all. REVO Open House held at Bobst Firenze, Italy Resounding technical and sales success for the REVO Master Class

The REVO Master Class Open House which took place from 29thNovember to 1st December 2016 at the Competence Center of Bobst Firenze, Italy, succeeded in being a very dynamic event rich in interaction and networking opportunities for the 322 people that attended it over the three days and six sessions. Printers and converters of flexible packaging, folding cartons and labels made the journey to attend a workshop which would provide an in-depth knowledge of REVO technology, whilst also seeing it in action during actual printing demonstrations.

The event also marked the start of REVO Master Certification. By taking part in the Master Classes and demo tracks, participants in the event completed the first step and received the REVO Silver badge, the first of three certificates – Silver, Gold and Platinum – that will lead to REVO Master certification.

The event also marked the start of REVO Master Certification. By taking part in the Master Classes and demo tracks, participants in the event completed the first step and received the REVO Silver badge, the first of three certificates – Silver, Gold and Platinum – that will lead to REVO Master certification. The program will be made available next year by the REVO Team during dedicated events held at different locations worldwide. The REVO offering to the packaging industry is truly unique. It is a process that flows from prepress through to print production; and summing up the highlights of the demonstrations shown on two BOBST inline flexo presses makes impressive reading, demonstrating the reliability and unique quality of the REVO Digital Flexo workflow: • Printing of four different jobs on film and carton substrates using 16 different Pantone colors in total, without ever changing the ink in the print

units or the anilox rollers Job changes automatically performed in one minute, with the new job in register after less than 20 meters of waste In each of the four jobs all the Pantone colors showed a Delta-E color accuracy of less than 2.0, notwithstanding the different physical properties and level of absorption of the 38 micron unsupported polypropylene and the 240 gsm light board substrates used in the demo runs.

What lies behind such impressive performance is the determination of the companies that, since 2013, have made up the REVO technology team to push the flexo process beyond its current limitations: pooling together their know-how and resources to develop a new reliable and predictable process. All the REVO Team partners – Americk Packaging, Apex International, AVT, BOBST, DuPont, Esko, Flint Group, X-Rite PANTONE and UPM Raflatac – were present in numbers at the event to share their know-how and the specifics of their contribution to the development of the process, both in the Master Classes and during one to one and small group discussions with event participants.

REVO Master Class Open House comprised four classes plus two demo tracks The Master Class sessions opened with the testimonial of converting company Americk Packaging relayed by Daragh Whelan, Operations

Technical Director of their Haverill site, where the REVO Digital Flexo project was first implemented three years ago on two BOBST inline flexo presses. Mr Whelan talked the audience through the delights and difficulties of being a forerunner in the introduction of a new kind of flexo process which makes the best use of digital technology not as a printing method but to digitize the workflow and make the press fully automated while delivering a print quality of 90Lcm (223 LPi). “The REVO technology has added value to our production whilst increasing run time and decreasing waste. The fact that our lead time has halved since, puts a very strong case for having adopted the technology and for being a part of its future development.” Matteo Cardinotti, Managing Director of Bobst Firenze led an open discussion about REVO profitability vs. conventional printing, highlighting the elements that are instrumental in increasing the overall economic performance of the REVO production process and stressing the high level of profitability even for below 500 linear meter run production, irrespective of the application. In the third session, Dan Pulling, EMEA Business Development Manager at Esko and Jan Scharfenberg, Technical Manager EMEA at DuPont Advanced Printing unraveled all the steps of the pre-press process required to create the ECG colour separation. “Esko is fully behind this project which offers printers confidence in ensuring their customers quality consistency and repeatability of the final product. Extended Color Gamut will ultimately change the way converters will print packaging in the future. And early adopters are already starting to take advantage of ECG workflow. Now, with the REVO Academy available to all the converters worldwide, adoption of ECG will be easier and faster,” said Dan Pulling.

Comparing the print quality and color uniformity consistency and repeatability of samples produced on different BOBST presses equipped with REVO digital flexo technology

The last class session tackled the very topical issue of the use of UV inks and their safety in flexible packaging applications for food. Niklas Olsson, Global Brand Manager NW at Flint Group, led this session showing data on how the new generation of low migration UV flexo inks integrated into the REVO process is compliant with even the most stringent regulations for food contact material compliance. “There is still some misconception relating to the safety of UV inks in food packaging which has no reason to be and should be dispelled because, from a compliance point of view, they pass all the safety tests, whilst providing the additional benefits of consistent ink

transfer and physical properties,” stressed Niklas Olsson. Providing an additional safety guarantee for UV flexo is the BOBST certified UV Track system which BOBST narrow- and midweb inline flexo presses can be equipped with. This system measures the UV dose and tracks the safety of every printed meter of substrate so, in combination with low migration inks, delivers full compliance in food packaging applications. This is a unique feature of energy curable inks compared to solvent- and water-based inks: continuous safety vs. random safety traceability. Only with UV and EB curing can each single printed meter of substrate be safety certified.

Jan Scharfenberg added: “The REVO Academy is a good opportunity to make converters successful in adopting the REVO technology. By using Fast Easy plates, in combination with the REVO technologies, the time from file to printing is tremendously reduced, yet with exceptional print quality, making flexo a possible alternative vs. digital printing and for just-in-time production.”

Track 1 and Track 2 demonstrations followed the workshop sessions The REVO technology printing demonstrations were carried out using a BOBST M6 UV flexo inline press which made a great show of the quality and advantages of Digital Flexo technology. The line was equipped with all the technologies that together concur to make the Digital Flexo process developed by the REVO partners: patented GTT anilox rollers by Apex International provided extremely consistent ink laydown for absolute color consistency; press management and quality control systems by AVT guaranteed digital control of quality and on-the-fly adjustment capabilities; flexo plates by DuPont were able to print with unprecedented 90 lines/cm print quality, on both film and carton substrates; ECG color separation software and Flexo Imaging hardware by Esko made the color matching a “digital” process no longer dependent entirely on the skills of press operators; flexo inks by Flint Group provided fully food compatible printed samples; a colour measurement and standard system by X-Rite PANTONE was able to show that the 16 pantone colors which were measured were all below the 2 Delta-E threshold which is considered acceptable by most global brand owners. Attendees could also visit the REVO Academy, experiencing the fully operational REVO plate manufacturing process using Esko prepress & proofing solutions, the Esko CDI Spark 4835 Flexo Plate Imaging device plus UV Exposure and Fast Plate processing provided by DuPont. The REVO Academy allows converters to come to Bobst Firenze with a new file, and in less than 2 hours be able to print the new job on the press, including plate making, plate mounting and press set-up. There is no need to specify special Pantone inks: with REVO Technology the accurate color matching is achieved by Esko Equinox pre-press software for Extended Gamut Printing. REVO partners advise that converters worldwide can use the REVO Academy for tests and for full “turnkey” REVO training. Substrate flexibility being another of the many advantages of the M6 press and of the REVO technologies, the demonstrations alternated between printing a flexible packaging job on 38 micron unsupported polypropylene in the morning and a folding carton job on 240 gsm

light board in the afternoon. Noteworthy was the fact that, irrespective of the specifics of the physical properties of the two substrates in terms of absorption, for both jobs the Pantone colors showed a Delta-E color accuracy of below 2.0.

REVO Technology Team “After narrow-web, mid-web and UV ink printing, we are looking at the exciting possibility of extending the REVO Anilox technology to mid-web and wide-web flexible packaging applications using solvent-based and water-based inks.”

With reference to printing substrates, Marko Tiainen, Business Segment Manager, UPM Raflatac said, “We are completing the REVO validation of the UPM substrates so that they can all become available world-wide.”

“REVO not only enables users to achieve high 90Lcm print quality, almost threedimensional visual depth and contrast of the printed images, and to print consistently repeatable quality which can be digitally measured and validated by global digital quality standards, it also extends the quality performance to other parameters like consistency, repeatability and predictability that are part of the production process needed to achieve an extraordinary level of overall operational efficiency,” concluded Federico D’Annunzio, Strategic Products Marketing Director of BOBST Business Unit Web-fed.

Ian Trevor Pike, Packaging Product Portfolio Manager at X-Rite PANTONE said, “The REVO approach to color management is scientific in providing the color consistency and repeatability that the Extended Color Gamut system can guarantee through the highly important step of colour communication and measurement and through the control products which PANTONE contributes to the REVO ECG system.” Commenting on the flawless performance of the M6 demonstration, AVT’s Business Development Director, David Naisby said, “We are delighted to see the results of the joint BOBST and AVT Helios Turbo HD and SpectraLab in line spectrophotometer integration on the M6 Digital Flexo press. AVT within the REVO process delivers workflow automation of both colour, register and print quality control which results in a turnkey solution for REVO printers”. Nick Harvey, Technical Director Apex Printing Solutions EMEA, Apex Europe, is already geared up to the next developments for the

“Because it delivers the same performance across all market sectors, irrespective of run lengths, substrates or applications, the appeal of the REVO Digital Flexo technology is truly universal,” said Dan Pulling of Esko. “This was reflected by the fact that the participants in the Master Class Open House were converters of all sizes, from large multinational corporations to individual family-owned operations.” Matteo Cardinotti, Managing Director of Bobst Firenze concluded: “We actually sold or finalized the sales of presses equipped with the REVO Digital Flexo technology at the event, which is a very telling comment on the success of this event.”

SGK unifies USG Boral across 12 different countries Bringing together one efficient Packaging System

SGK, a division of Matthews International Corporation, and a global brand development, activation and deployment provider that drives brand performance, has created a global, unified packaging system for USG Boral, the joint venture between Australia’s Boral and USG Corporation. The $1.6 billion joint venture has brought together a portfolio of leading-edge plasterboard, ceiling and finishing products. To ensure global reach and view, USG Boral engaged SGK to brand its varied processes

development group of SGK, led the creative strategy through to production for over 1,300 SKUs in sequenced phases using a cloudbased, graphic management system. This ensured enough flex to respond to multiple markets, languages, cultural nuances and regulations, while bringing technical superiority to life. SGK’s Client Solutions group engineered solutions for greater design-to-print efficiency, serialization, anti-counterfeiting and future packaging innovation. Through three launch phases, one global packaging system was achieved in market with the strength and flexibility to build brand consistency while responding to local needs.

“Our partnership with SGK has been a fascinating journey in designing a new, cohesive packaging system for our diverse portfolio across the APAC and Middle East markets. The system manages to convey the union of USG Boral’s premium positioning and best-in-class building products technology, manufacturing and distribution footprint. We are now becoming ONE USG Boral across 12 different markets and cultures throughout Asia, Australia and the Middle East.” - Jeremy Verstraete, Marketing Director, USG Boral USG Boral is currently being rolled out in 12 markets including Australia, China and Korea.

Flint Group launches innovative rotec Eco Bridge and brands packaging into one core, consistent master brand. The common goal was to unify 14 categories across 12 markets and 13 businesses into one cohesive efficient packaging system. Starting with a purpose-built program from insight to execution, the USG Boral and SGK teams conducted extensive audit sessions within the different markets and spoke to a diverse range of stakeholders, architects, builders, contractors, distributors, and end users. The aim was to create a unified portfolio architecture that allows for future premiumization, whilst optimizing brand recognition and product navigation. The packaging was designed from the ground up, based on the strategic idea of “smart pragmatism”. The result is a design that enables easy navigation of product types through vivid colors and bold typography. A smart set of icons made advanced performance features visible, while the graphic system maximizes visual impact for the USG Boral brand. Adhering to the global design and color guidelines across the core and premium ranges, Anthem Worldwide, part of the brand

An adapter with a patent-pending breathable metal ring to eliminate all tight-fit and sleeve mounting issues. Flint Group officially launches its patent-pending, state-of-theart rotec Eco Bridge for use in flexographic printing presses and on plate-mounting equipment. The rotec Eco Bridge is an adapter with a breathable metal ring at the operator side which creates an air pillow to allow easy and fast mounting of sleeves. Typical adapters have only four to eight air stream holes to help mount the sleeves. In comparison, the rotec Eco Bridge forms a ring of air across the entire circumference of the adapter. Another significant benefit of the rotec Eco Bridge is the reduced air volume requirement. A standard adapter normally needs about 720 l/min of compressed air at six bar of pressure to mount a sleeve; the rotec Eco Bridge can achieve the same results with only 50-70 l/min, and the required pressure can sometimes be reduced. This is more than 90 % reduction in air volume needed. Not only is this a significant cost savings, but reduced air volume also equates to much less noise. A working rotec Eco Bridge produces decibel levels a little over

normal room noise (< 60 dB) compared to a typical adapter set-up at ≥ 85dB. At a recent customer trial, Robert Adler, Flint Group Sales Manager for North America said, “I believe this will become a new standard of our industry.” Press operators benefit from using the rotec Eco Bridge for easier sleeve mounting, cost savings, and reduced noise. At the first trial in Germany, the customer said, “Our press operator was ecstatic. Mounting is much easier than before. The noise is significantly less than normal, and the best is, we can de-mount the 420 mm Repeat Sleeve with one hand, without effort. Perfect development for our pre-press operation!” Flint Group remains focused on new technology and innovative customer solutions, like the rotec Eco Bridge helping printers achieve increased press productivity.

TRESU introduces Flexo Kit metallic ink unit TRESU Group introduces a compact flexo printing unit for rapid application of highgloss metallic finishes on to digitally printed folding cartons. TRESU Flexo Kit is specially designed for integration into a production line that features a HP Indigo 30000 digital press and a TRESU iCoat coater.

Using printing sleeves and featuring a dedicated anilox roll, chambered doctor blade and pump, the Flexo Kit unit provides a separate uncontaminated supply system for gold, silver, aerodyne, and other specialeffect coating finishes. The unit is fine-tuned to the unique flow and drying characteristics of metallic inks, so ink can be applied at speeds of up to 4600 sheets per hour, equivalent to maximum printer and coater speeds. The pumps and chamber doctor blade provide an enclosed ink flow throughout the unit, allowing tight regulation of viscosity and pressure, and preventing foaming. Its automatic cleaning facility means ink changes can take place in minutes. Additionally, the unit’s anilox rolls feature elongated cells to handle relatively large particles without clogging.

Flexo Kit is built for fast integration into existing iCoat units, and can be specified for inclusion on new machine orders. Kim Krintel, vice-president, TRESU DigitalSolutions, comments: “Metallic inks are an essential requirement for folding carton niches such as chocolates and confectionery, and flexo is the ideal process for achieving the high-gloss effect. TRESU Flexo Kit enables digital converters to add this high-value embellishment with minimal extra logistics, inline and at fast speeds.”

Ian Kendall, CEO of Reflex Label said: “One of many interests Reflex and MPS have in common is the commitment to sustainable solutions. During press demonstrations at the MPS headquarters in the Netherlands, we sawfirst-hand proof of integrated waste reduction and ultimate flexibility. One of our low-waste solutions is the production of linerless labels, a technology that MPS is known for as an early adopter and supporter, also evident in their participation of the debut Linerless Trail at Labelexpo Europe 2015, and again at Labelexpo Americas 2016.” Another reason for choosing MPS, cites

Kendall, is first-class machinery. “We only purchase the very best available machinery to meet the growing demands of our customers, for more complex and intricate label and packaging designs that ensure their products stand out from the crowd. MPS presses are robust, high in quality, and ensure the optimum printing productivity coupled to the very best print results. We are delighted with the continuation of our partnership and with the addition of these five MPS presses to Reflex’s advanced manufacturing sites.” We look forward to continued success and growth together in the years to come.
