FROM THE EDITORS’ DESK Dear Readers, The India Expo Centre, Greater Noida – venue for the 13th edition of PrintPack India exhibition this year is all set for the grand show. Dubbed by some as the ‘Mahakumbh’ of the Indian Printing Industry, the largest printing and allied industries’ exhibition will keep the fraternity quite busy for five days starting 4th of February and curtains coming down on the 8th. The organizers – Indian Printing Packaging and Allied Machinery Manufacturers’ Association (IPAMA) – have reported an overwhelming participants’ response and expected the exhibitors’ count to cross 400 this time. The Expo Centre has been well setup and furnished as per the most modern demands of exhibitions worldwide. Six new pillar-less exhibition halls, equipped with ultra-modern facilities have load bearing capacity of around 30 tons/per sq/metres. New space has been built to accommodate increased demand for space booking. In conjunction with the PrintPack India 2017 show, the NPES Print Business Outlook Conference 2017, co-hosted by IPAMA and themed ‘Power up Your Printing Business…Innovate, Integrate, Motivate!‘ will be held on February 05, 2017 at the same venue. PrintPack India 2017 will prove a platform for value creation for the printing, packaging and converting segment. Exhibitors are enthusiastic about this great launch-pad and effective medium to make sales and set up new technology partnerships. The organizers expect to once again break all previous success records of the exhibition. Key industry players have revealed their grand plans for the premium show. It’s just round the corner and the wait to watch the latest live is going to end with the opening on coming 4th. Let’s make the most of the vast business, cooperation, and networking opportunity on this single platform. We have two important interviews this time. In one, X-Rite Pantone Color Expert Felix Schmollgruber discusses current trends in the measurement, management and communication of colour and appearance data in the plastics industry and suggests what to watch for in the future. In the second, Michael Mehnert, Managing Partner of extrusion blow moulding major, BEKUM speaks about his company, extrusion technology and market. Siegwerk: Latest EB Inks generates momentum for Offset for flexible packaging Siegwerk promotes an innovative ink solution for offset printing and subsequent electron beam (EB) curing. The new technology delivers outstanding print quality and enables the reduction of operational costs for short runs. Siegwerk is now offering a new ink range for offset printing, which is particularly suitable for flexible packaging. With these state-ofthe-art energy curing offset ink solutions (e.g. EB 705) Siegwerk gives flexible packaging printers access to the benefits of offset printing for short print job lengths: Low cost of print form and short set-up times allowing for quicker changeovers between the print jobs.

of squaremeters,” explains Dr. Stefan Busse, Regional Director Application Technology, Flexible Packaging EMEA at Siegwerk. “Today, more and more jobs are printed on wide web machines with only a few thousand squaremeters. In order to stay costcompetitive in these markets all cost drivers have to be minimized. That’s why some of our customers are attracted by the low cost of print forms for offset printing plates.”

Short time-to-market, outstanding print quality and high fastness properties – offset printing inks already do a great job in a wide range of print applications like shrink-film, wrap-around and inmould labels. Up to now, UV curing inks are successfully used in many cases. Converters who want to avoid the use of photo initiators in energy curing inks can alternatively use electron beam (EB) curing systems to reduce the risk of potential migration problems.

Siegwerk invited to supply EB offset inks for Comexi’s new CI8 press at latest Open House event

Several industrial print trials on Comexi’s central impression EB offset press, called CI8, have shown, Siegwerk’s new EB technology offers an excellent print performance, low dot gain, low water dosing with less emulsification and scumming as well as fast intensity recovery after stops. The new ink technology is suitable for a variety of plastic substrates of the flexible packaging market like coex. OPP, acrylic coated PET, etc. Recently, first positive results were obtained in lamination studies with different packaging structures too.

Offset printing enables cost reduction with regard to shorter print job lengths In many market segments there is a trend towards shorter print job lengths driven by brand owners desiring packaging diversification and also an optimization of working capital along the value chain. Due to this, printers have to deal with frequent changes in the printed design and a varying average job lengths. “In the past, typical print run lengths for example in beverage wraparound labels were several tens of thousands

January 2017

Due to the excellent print performance of the new EB ink solutions Siegwerk has recently been invited to supply EB offset inks for Comexi’s last Open House event on December 14th in Girona (Spain) where the company was presenting its new CI8 press to a selected audience. “We are proud of the acknowledgement of our ink performance by Comexi,” says Dr. Busse. “During the last month our technical teams in Europe have made any effort in finding ways to help our customers accessing the benefits of offset printing in flexible packaging.”

Compliant with product safety standards The new ink technology was developed in accordance with the relevant product safety standards. All ingredients are compliant with the stringent Swiss Ordinance and will also comply with the upcoming new German Ordinance. Own migration tests with trial materials exhibited low migration behavior suitable for food packaging. The new system will add to Siegwerk’s broad range of Flexible Packaging solutions – while other ink technologies including UV inks will continue to have their merits. Siegwerk is continuously focussing on the expansion of its offering for the packaging market and to strengthen its market leadership in labels and flexible packaging applications. With a combination of best-inclass ink performance, high product safety, and continuous support and guidance, Siegwerk will make any effort to support customers in addressing upcoming trends and meet their individual needs with cuttingedge solutions.

films offer an intense black colour along with a velvet touch to the laminated paper/ paperboard or package, thereby enhancing its aesthetics. Scuff Free Matte Lamination Films: Unlike a traditional matte film, this film provides excellent resistance to scuff marks which could develop during production, transportation and handling of the pack. QuadTech at PrintPack India 2017 To present newest automation and workflow technologies PRINTPACK INDIA 2017 (hall 14, stand G43). Among the featured solutions are four new technologies introduced at drupa 2016, which promise consistently high colour quality, reduced production time, waste reduction, and dramatically lowered consumable costs. Register Guidance with MultiCam TRIM is a highly economical, advanced colour-tocolour register and cutoff control solution for newspaper printers. Designed for single width, single folder newspaper applications, MultiCam TRIM offers a streamlined set of features for simplified operation, which reliably delivers perfect register for high quality print at a low cost. ColorTrack with InkControl is a unique new colour management software for flexo and gravure packaging applications. The “colour expert in a box” software automates fast, accurate press-side correction of ink formulations. By simplifying colour management workflow, the software provides direct connection from customer input to ink recipe creation to press-side correction. Without any hardware modifications to the press, ColorTrack dramatically reduces the number of ink corrections needed to achieve accurate, optimal colour.

The result is a powerful, remarkably intuitive tool that is built on QuadTech’s popular ICON integrated platform. “We are very excited to bring the latest press automation technology to the Indian market,” says Hemant Desai, QuadTech’s General Manager of Operations and Sales in India. “We think the industry is more than ready to embrace these highly economical

new solutions to simplify their workflows and achieve new levels of print quality.” Other products in QuadTech’s portfolio include the Autotron™ 2600 with ClearLogic register control system, Color Control with AccuCam, Register Guidance and Ribbon Control with MultiCam, Color Measurement with SpectralCam, Web Viewing System, and PDF Verification.

Color Measurement with DeltaCam makes advanced, inline spectral measurement affordable to individual Packaging print houses. For about the cost of a colour register system, package printers can utilize accurate, automated L*a*b* measurement on film, paper or board—ensuring that all printed product is within their customers’ colour specifications. The M1, M0, ISO compliant technology enables printers to reduce time and waste while confidently maintaining colour throughout the roll— without the need to wait for a roll change to measure with a handheld device. QuadTech’s modernized Inspection System sets a new standard for fast, easy detection of print defects. The advanced 100% inspection technology has been “reimagined from the ground up,” based on user feedback, to create a better process for the detection and disposition of defects.

The Printers Mysore introduces editorial system Content-X First installation of the successful Content-X by ppi Media and Digital Collections in India. The Printers (Mysore) is one of the leading media companies headquartered in Bangalore, Karnataka, and publishes one of India’s top ten English-language newspapers, the Deccan Herald. The company also publishes the daily newspaper Prajavani in Kannada, a language that is spoken by around 40 million people in India. Prajavani is one of the oldest newspapers to be published in Kannada. In future, journalists and editors of both the Deccan Herald and Prajavani will use Content-X software and best-in-class workflows to produce their daily editions. In search of a suitable new editorial system for their editorial operations, the management at The Printers Mysore have opted for Content-X, which is already in use at large media companies in Germany, the US and Thailand amongst others. What led the Indian company to decide in favour of Content-X were its distinct multi-channel functionality, the extremely positive experience of other users and the fact that Content-X supports production in English as well as Indian languages, such as Kannada. Media companies actively engaged in their digital transformation are opting for Content-X,

since this editorial system stores content in a media-neutral format so that it can be played out in digital and print, covering the full range of publishing channels. The Printers Mysore will be implementing Content-X as their most important editorial tool. Prajavani has a daily circulation of 527,300 copies and is printed in 7 locations, with 32 zonal split editions across Karnataka. Deccan Herald has a daily circulation of 286,540 copies, largely focused in Bangalore city. In addition to that, The Printers Mysore publishes two Kannada magazines, which includes Sudha, a weekly lifestyle magazine and Mayura, a monthly literary review, which are also to be produced using Content-X. Sudha has a circulation of 75,000 copies, while Mayura circulates 25,000 copies per month. Mr. K. N. Tilak Kumar, Joint Managing Director at The Printers Mysore, says: “We look forward to our cooperation with ppi Media and to implementing Content-X. We are confident that this promising system will enable us to maintain focus on our journalistic core competencies.” Dr. Hauke Berndt, ppi Media’s COO, says about the cooperation with Printers Mysore:

“I am particularly pleased that The Printers Mysore Private Ltd. will publish dailies and magazines with Content-X in the future. India and its numerous different vernacular languages and non-Roman scripts pose a special challenge to any editorial system and we are more than equal to meet these challenges with Content-X.” The Content-X project implementation at The Printers Mysore has started in January 2017. ppi Media GmbH is a workflow specialist for newspaper and magazine publishers, as well as printers, corporate publishers and groups and SMEs. Its main focus lies in the development of highly efficient software solutions on a global scale. 80% of all daily newspapers on the German market are produced using ppi Media products. Many more installations can be found in Asia, Europe, Africa and the USA. A subsidiary of the Eversfrank Group, ppi Media has its head office in Hamburg and branches in Kiel, Germany, and Chicago, USA.

Performance Package order marks a first for QIPC Calprint SL has placed an order for a Performance Package from Q.I. Press Controls (QIPC). QIPC is to install the IDS-3D system for colour and register control at Calprint SL’s plant in Medina del Campo, Spain. It will be the first closed-loop colour control system to be installed on a coldset press in the country. The Performance Package will also entail the updating of existing Engineering Automation Electronics (EAE) systems. Calprint SL is a private printing concern which has seen its customer base increase considerably over the last few years. It has invested and made improvements in the plant: new printing machines, state-of-theart technologies and recruitment of the best professionals. Its owner, Eugenio Gascón bets on the printing business eagerly and efficiently manages the concern which now prints national dailies El Mundo, El Norte de Castilla, Gaceta de Salamanca, Diario de Leon among others. In the light of recent objectives, the company deemed it necessary to invest in the automation of its KBA Comet printing press. “The hope is we can make significant savings in terms of waste and time,” explains José Luis Peregrina, production manager at Calprint SL. “Improving the quality of our end-product and increasing levels of colour consistency in our print versions results in greater customer satisfaction.” In all, a total of 12 IDS-3D cameras will be installed in Medina del Campo, together with an IQM data-processor. “Because this is the first QIPC closed-loop colour control system in Spain, Calprint SL is likely to serve as a reference for our products in the rest of the country,” explains Jaco Bleijenberg, Director of International Sales & Marketing at QIPC. “Other interested parties will be able to visit to see our system in action.” In addition to this order, Calprint SL and QIPC have also signed a statement of intent which means that practically the same QIPC systems as well as an EAE update will be installed on another KBA Comet printing press at the plant. “So far, the partnership with QIPC has been perfect, but the proof of the pudding will be when we see the new system working,” says José Luis Peregrina.

Jaco Bleijenberg: “Once the system has succeeded in meeting the requirements

and the expectations set, we will we be able to install the other press to the same standards.”

Explore endless operational benefits of workflow automation with Konica Minolta’s AccurioPro The new software platform enables printing businesses to free up their workforce significantly and engage them in more revenue generating activities.

With Print service providers (PSP) aggressively engaged in upgrading as well as adding new services and applications to cater to the next generation demands of customers, Workflow automation has become pivotal for seamless and streamlined business operations. Furthermore printing businesses are also looking for more scalable solutions to meet the varied demands of customers with limited resources. Citing the prevailing scenario in the printing segment, Konica Minolta, the global leader in MFPs and industrial printing solutions has unveiled AccurioPro software platform, offering end to end production automation and integrating the best features of in house and cloud-based software.

The solution is specifically tailored to be modular (pay only for the components needed), flexible (integrates with other common graphic arts software), scalable (supports small-to-large operations), and comprehensive (features beyond prepress to incorporate colour management and finishing). Workflow automation also helps businesses in better structuring their operations resulting in enhanced outputs and revenue generation.

Salient features of AccurioPro Highly accommodating for print shops of differing size and sophistication, the AccurioPro platform’s modular design is crafted to furnish end-to-end workflow automation. The solution also ensures that PSPs can harness as little or as much of the solution as per existing requirements. The solution comprises of three key pillars-: JDF interoperability for seamless compatibility with existing commercial

workflows like Agfa Apogee, Kodak Prinergy, and Screen Equios. AccurioPro Conductor has been tailored for centralised and intelligent output management. Job specs (via JDF) can be leveraged from a print MIS to effectively and efficiently load balance production across a fleet of digital presses without operator intervention. The conductor can also support finishing automation with the possibility for out-of-the-box integration due to a unique JDF converter that eliminates differences between vendors that are often hurdles to integration. AccurioPro Cloud Eye incorporated in the solution is for remote management and administration of colour quality and standards, and is particularly useful for multisite quality control. Cloud Eye helps printing businesses in day-to-day colour control, sharing colour data across devices/sites, ICC profile creation, and reporting to ensure devices are within tolerance.

Trends in Plastics: Beyond Colour In this interview, X-Rite Pantone Color Expert Felix Schmollgruber discusses current trends in the measurement, management and communication of colour and appearance data in the plastics industry and suggests what to watch for in the future. more special effects to the finishes. This is also a growing requirement in the highly competitive consumer electronics market.

Why does this trend create challenges for the plastics supply chain?

Felix, plastics professionals have been dealing with colour issues for many years. Can you tell us what has recently changed the dynamics? Schmollgruber: The key trend we are seeing is the desire on the part of various manufacturers – from consumer electronics and household appliances to automotive and packaging – to use more advanced plastic surfaces, including special effects finishes. Designers who are specifying plastics surfaces are excited about the things they can do these days, including translucent, pearlescent, metallic and sparkling effects as well as textures. This presents challenges when it comes to the ability to accurately measure and monitor both colour and appearance.

Can you give us a couple of examples what you are talking about? Schmollgruber: One example would be something like a microwave door. In the past, it was simply a specific colour and flat surface texture; whereas now there is a growing desire to add textures and other special effects to enhance the product appearance. In addition, plastics are replacing glass in many applications. Front-loading washers, for example, where the door used to be glass can now be constructed in plastic, reducing both weight and cost while providing the ability to add

Schmollgruber: Already at various stages in the supply chain, there are challenges with ensuring accurate colour, from production of pigments through compounding, masterbatching and final manufacturing and assembly. In many cases, manufacturers are dealing with a global supply chain, with parts manufactured in various locations around the globe. Everything has to match when it reaches the point of final assembly, and manufacturers are also looking for as little batch-to-batch variance as possible. By adding special effects finishes to the mix, you add a completely different layer of complexity. Instead of just worrying about colour and gloss, you now also have to worry about appearance – textures, reflective surfaces and more. The paint& coatings industry has been dealing with this longer. But keep in mind that paint is a very thin layer, while plastics are thicker, presenting additional challenges especially when you are dealing with special effects finishes like metallics that change colour or appearance based on the angle of view, and where alignment of the special effects flakes and other materials is critical to the final appearance of the product. With the thickness of plastic, you can easily lose the special effects appearance or the desired pigment effects. Keep in mind also that technology allows quite complex injection molding for specialty finishes as well.

Zentrum (SKZ)), a research association that is well-known in the central European plastics community. Their Color Management Committee has been working with the German association for the automotive industry, Verband der Automobilindustrie (VDA) on a research project to define scales and parameters for process and quality control for appearance of plastics. At the same time, X-Rite has recently introduced its http://www.xrite.com/categories/Appearance. It is a simple-to-operate solution, that enables the creation of virtual renderings with the exact same optical characteristics as the real material so that what you see on screen or in our Virtual Light Booth is what you see in the final product. Colour and appearance data are captured via scans and compressed into a manageable file size using X-Rite’s vendorneutral Appearance eXchange Format (AxF) file format that can then be ingested into most major Product Lifecycle Management (PLM), Computer-Aided Design (CAD), and state-of-the art rendering applications. Your readers are probably already using the Color eXchange Format (CxF) to communicate colour, another vendor-neutral file format that was developed by X-Rite and subsequently adopted as an ISO standard. CxF is a subset of AxF; in other words, with AxF we have extended the ability to accurately describe and communicate colour characteristics to include appearance characteristics as well. Initiatives like these will help to quickly address the challenges manufacturers and others in the plastics supply chain face today in terms of their ability to consistently deliver high-quality, differentiated products to the market with minimal waste and the shortest possible time to market. We will be collaborating with the SKZ/VDA project as well as continuing our own research and development activities.

What are some of the things happening in the industry to help stakeholders better communicate and manage both colour and appearance?

What do you see as the end result of these efforts?

Schmollgruber: There is a growing level of activity in the area of characterization of appearance. Very recently, I received a communication from the Southern German Plastics Center (Süddeutsches Kunststoff-

Extrusion Blow Moulding: Is the future electric, hybrid or hydraulic? Michael Mehnert, Managing Partner of BEKUM speaks about the company, extrusion technology and market. A generational change has taken place at the blowmoulding machine manufacturer BEKUM. Michael Mehnert (34), the youngest son of company founder Gottfried Mehnert, is assuming responsibility for the Group as the second-generation owner. Dipl.Ing. Michael Mehnert carried out various functions at BEKUM after successfully graduating as a mechanical engineer in Aachen. In the spring of 2016, Michael Mehnert was appointed to CEO of BEKUM Maschinenfabrik Traismauer GesmbH. In 2016, the European production operation was centralised in Traismauer. Here, Michael Mehnert speaks about the current market position and the company’s prospects in an interview during the K 2016 trade fair.

BEKUM has been a leading figure in the world of extrusion blow-moulding since 1959. Your father has now put you in charge. How do you feel about this? EBLOW 37 – the controlled movement at a high force with a build-up in closing force within 135 ms enables processing of sensitive materials as well as provides extremely precise seams on the end product.

Michael Mehnert: Well, it really is a tremendous challenge for me, after all my father has shaped the world of extrusion blow-moulding like nobody else in the sector. He’s certainly set the bar very high. Having said that, I also see it as an opportunity to make my own mark in continuing the successful history of the company. It is without doubt an exhilarating remit involving a great deal of responsibility and creative freedom.

How will you approach this? What are your plans?

Key Notes : > BEKUM - the leading figure in the world of extrusion blow moulding since 1959. > Continues development with addition of tandemblow & multi-cavity technology for quality and maximum performance. > Showcases their hybrid EBLOW 37 at K 2016.

Michael Mehnert: Thankfully, I don’t have to reinvent the extrusion blow-moulding method. The technological basis at BEKUM is perfect at the moment. In our role as technological leader in the

industry, it is up to us to show the way forward. In a nutshell, this is where our greatest responsibility lies. Bearing this in mind, I can count on an experienced management team that has been involved at BEKUM for many years now, the members of which provide valuable input. I have also taken the opportunity to prepare myself for my task by being involved with various functions at BEKUM. The technological impetus from BEKUM is something that I naturally want to push on with. When you consider our patented C-frames, the electric blow-moulding machine generation EBLOW, multilayer technology, spiral mandrel distributor heads or the Up-Down calibration, to name only a few of our innovations – you can see that we are already in a leadership role, but we have to push on. Our strategic direction is something we have continuously developed and implemented. I will set out a specific time frame in which to present our future strategy with the leading managers. However, there is no question about it for me, continuity, quality commitment and speed of innovation – along with, in particular, a sense of proportion will be my aspirational principles.

What could that mean, in specific terms? Michael Mehnert: Look – here’s one example, although there are many: With 18,000 machines shipped worldwide, the BEKUM Group has achieved by far the largest population of blow-moulding machines of any brand. Somewhere around the globe a used, but still production-ready BEKUM machine is probably up for offer. Each of these machines has an expected service life of 20 years and achieves the highest resale values in the sector. Retrofits and services are topics that have a vital bearing on our

future. We will be expanding our service functions.

… what about technologically?

these concepts are viable. Our EBLOW 37 is electrically powered. However, from a technical point-of-view, it is practical to realise the final 10 mm of the closing movement and the pressure build-up using a servo-hydraulic pressure pad. This controlled movement at a high force with a build-up in closing force within 135 ms enables us to process sensitive materials, while also providing extremely precise seams on the end product. In strict terms, this means that EBLOW 37 is a hybrid machine: the brief build-up in closing force could only be purely electric if significantly larger drives were used – but this would, of course, be in conflict with our goal of achieving energy efficiency. This is a unique selling point for us.

Michael Mehnert: Our market is an established market. Bona fide innovations, something we have always been capable of, are becoming increasingly more difficult to realise. However, development potential is out there, particularly in the areas of energy efficiency, automation, in software and the optimisation of algorithms, the coordination of a production system or in the sensitive creation of process parameters using sensor technology. The use of camera systems, in other words sensor technology for hose blisters, is still in its infancy. In the complicated world of “Industry 4.0” we have a wide range of optimisation options to contend with.

At K 2016 you exhibited an electric EBLOW 37. Is the future an electric one? Michael Mehnert: The future is electric, hybrid or even hydraulic. It depends. All

meet customer requirements and intended application. This requires engineering on site and, in particular, an extremely high level of flexibility in the production area. The concentration of the production in Traismauer has had an extremely positive effect here. In the USA, BEKUM America is also present in a highly-developed market. And this applies for both Europe and the USA: We need employees and suppliers with long-standing experience, local engineering and – more than anything else – flexibility.

BEKUM has endured its highs and lows. How do you see the future of this traditional brand? Michael Mehnert: For me, tradition

What was behind the decision to base production in Traismauer, along with the plant already in the USA and not to open another production plant in Asia or China? Michael Mehnert: Our machine technology requires an extremely high quality standard. This also means: We want to manufacture specific core components such as our blower heads ourselves. This requires a great deal of know-how and employees with many years of experience behind them. We also work with established suppliers geared towards providing top quality. This is not really something that we could simply transfer at the drop of a hat to other sites around the globe. Not forgetting either, that we are a classical specialpurpose mechanical engineering company. Each machine is specifically adapted to

also means having the courage to change and adapt to meet the requirements placed on us by the market or by our customers. As a mechanical engineering company for extrusion blow-moulding, we are exposed to the same market mechanisms as our competitors. Since the 1990s, market power and raw-material costs in the PET industry have piled on the pressure in the area of packaging applications. BEKUM has systematically continued to develop the extrusion blow-moulding method, trimming it to reach maximum performance without any losses in quality with the addition of the tandem-blow and multi-cavity technology. This is where our strengths lie: In the automotive area we have acquired further customers and projects for the production of co-extruded plastic fuel tanks, thereby helping us to gain an outstanding market position. Today, we generate 60% of the turnover with packaging and roughly 40% in the automotive sector. Last, but not least, at K 2016 we demonstrated the innovation capability of our EBLOW 37.

What do you intend to change first? Michael Mehnert: The BEKUM brand stands for commitment to quality. I won’t change anything about that, but in future I want to ensure that it continues to be backed up by all our employees and our know-how. Bekum at Interpack 2017: Hall 5 D 37

addition to TAC, we’ll continue to develop our instruments and software solutions to make the digital specification and process/quality control for plastics and other industries a reality.

Since your launch of TAC, what kind of response have you seen in the market? Schmollgruber: First of all, TAC was developed in response to an articulated need, mostly coming from the automotive industry. But we have also seen interest from other industries, including plastics and textiles. One interesting side note regarding physical standards used to monitor colour performance in plastics: Plastics age quickly and are sensitive to temperature. One major plastics masterbatcher we have spoken to recently told us that they actually keep their master reference panels in a bag in the freezer to make them last longer. They and others are thrilled that we are at a point where you can virtually throw away the physical samples and work from digital samples. Data is affected by temperature or exposure to light! In order to make that easier, we are

making Pantone Digital Libraries available for the plastics and other industries. These are digital libraries that include specifications for the full spectrum of Pantone colours and also enable the ability to include custom colours. In this way, everyone is working from the same digital standard, and you don’t have to worry about the degradation of physical standards.

What are some of the problems that occur when measurements are taken without good interinstrument agreement? Schmollgruber: People are specifically interested in instruments with good interinstrument agreement to eliminate the variation you can get when using different measurement instruments in different parts of the process. One example I saw recently was a “golden sample” that was provided by a U.S. manufacturer and a production sample from a European supplier. The manufacturer used a benchtop spectrophotometer for measurements and the supplier used a handheld. They got very different results, but according to the supplier’s instruments, the

production sample was in spec, while the manufacturer got completely different results. This can lead to disagreements about colour accuracy, especially when tolerances are tight, often causing delays and costly rework. This is where colour management can break down. Had they both been using a Ci7860, they would both have been working off a platform with very tight inter-instrument agreement and the supplier would have gotten result that would have allowed a correction before the production sample was sent back. It starts with a good master specification on the part of the manufacturer, and then highly accurate production and quality control on the part of the supplier. Especially when you combine this type of very tight tolerances on the part of the colour measurement instrument with the accurate virtualization for both colour and appearance delivered by a solution like TAC, you can see that stakeholders in the supply chain could quickly gain enough confidence in the digital process that they could virtually eliminate the time and expense of sending samples around the globe. They can easily compare both colour and appearance using virtual samples.

New aseptic carton brings Tetra Pak closer to sustainability goal The launch of a new version of Tetra Brik Aseptic 1000 Edge with a bio-based LightCap 30 is a further major step towards the goal. Tetra Pak has a long tradition in providing sustainable products to the world. At the company’s site in Modena in Italy, Tetra Pak gave Packaging Europe an insight into its journey towards fully renewable packaging for aseptic cartons as exemplified by a recently launched new version of the Tetra Brik Aseptic 1000 Edge with the bio-based LightCap 30. Sustainability is at the core of Tetra Pak’s brand philosophy, with the motto ‘Protects What’s Good’. Back in 2012, the company set itself a challenge for the development of sustainable products, to use 100% FSC-certified paperboard and to be able to produce a 100% renewable package, achieve a 40% global recycling rate and cap the company’s climate impact across the value chain at 2010 levels by 2020. This has proved successful, as Mario Abreu, Tetra Pak’s Environment Vice President, is proud to point out. “100% of the paperboard we source comes from wood from FSC-certified forests and other controlled sources. Our Tetra Rex bio-based pack, which was launched in January 2015, enjoys continued success, and the development of renewable product development continues as planned. The company has achieved a 23.6% recycling rate and has reduced emissions by 15% while the number of packages sold has increased by 16%.” Tetra Rex Bio-Based package is made of a carton manufactured solely from a combination of plastics derived from sugar cane and paperboard. The bio-based plastics used by Tetra Pak are produced by Brazilian chemical company, Braskem, which sources all of its feedstock from sugar cane grown on degraded pastures. Cap and neck and polyethylene used are made from biobased materials, and the paperboard used is sourced from FSC certified sites.

The next step for sustainability The launch of a new version of Tetra Brik Aseptic 1000 Edge with a bio-based

LightCap 30 is a further major step to secure the company’s sustainability goals. It is the first aseptic carton package in the world to receive the highest class of Vinçotte certification for its use of renewable materials. The new package is manufactured using a bio-based plastic film and cap, made from polymers derived from sugar cane. Combined with the paperboard, this lifts the share of materials from renewable sources in the package to above 80%, the threshold for four-star certification from Vinçotte, the Belgium-based accreditation agency that is world-recognised for assessing the renewable content of packaging products. The new package also boasts an up to 17% lower carbon footprint than a standard package, according to an independent lifecycle analysis conducted by IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute. “Increasing the use of renewable materials, defined as natural resources that can be replenished over time, plays an increasingly important role in mitigating resource scarcity and climate change,” said Philippe Dewolfs, President of the Certification Committee from Vinçotte “This is the only aseptic carton package we have certified so far and it has qualified for four-star certification.” Charles Brand, Executive Vice President, Product Management and Commercial Operations at Tetra Pak said: “There is a growing trend that consumers want to do more for the planet, and they want brand owners to help. With the authentic certification from Vinçotte, our new package

gives customers credible information to communicate with consumers, and helps them differentiate their products. “Our ultimate goal is to produce all of our packages using only sustainably-managed renewable materials. Launching the new Tetra Brik Aseptic 1000 Edge with Biobased LightCap 30 package is a significant milestone for us on that journey.” The new version of Tetra Brik Aseptic 1000 Edge with Bio-based LightCap 30 package is available to customers globally. Switching to the new version requires no additional capital equipment investment. The next step on the company’s sustainability journey will include making the neck opening on an aseptic carton fully renewable.. Further ahead, Tetra Pak will also be looking at alternative barrier materials to aluminium foil and the usage of bio-based inks as well as adhesives and bio-based straws.

A material for a sustainable future Plastics derived from sugar cane are currently used for premium products. Asked whether he foresees these plastics being used more widely in the future, Mr. Abreu says: “We do see them being made more available in the future, we aim to make sugar cane derived polymers available for different packages, categories and consumer groups around the world. The first step we took in this direction was our pilot project in Brazil in 2015, where all our 15 billion packages produced contained a certain share of biobased polymers in the décor and lamination layers. We are also working on changing the other layers to renewable materials in the future. It has to make commercial sense to the entire value chain, starting from the supplier of bio-based polymers to the end consumers. Therefore, we need to secure a certain volume before asking the supplier to change production from standard polymers to bio-based polymers.”

Siegwerk strengthens packaging inks by laminator investment By investing in a nordmeccanica laminator, Siegwerk is specifically enhancing its packaging ink testing and simulation skills. Siegwerk recently added a Labo Combi 400 laminator to its Technical Center for the business unit Flexible Packaging. The new machine adds state-of-the-art laminating capabilities to the existing testing skills at the European “Center of Competence” and therefore supports the targeted development of packaging inks under industrial or customer-realistic conditions. Siegwerk is one of the first printing ink manufacturers to operate its own laminator for product development and testing purposes. This will enable Siegwerk to offer packaging print providers even better solutions tailored to their specific requirements.

EMEA at Siegwerk, the reasons for the investment. “The new equipment enables us to conduct considerably more extensive ink development tests internally prior to start the qualification process at customers’ facilities. This leads to better ink performance and saves both our customers’ time and machine capacities,” adds Dr. Kaiser. At the same time the opportunity to simulate lamination processes under industrial or customerrealistic conditions enhances the company’s problem-solving skills. Any lamination problems occurring at the customer’s premises in connection with the ink can therefore be better understood and solved.

“Internal resources for testing lamination processes and the influence of printing inks on the performance of laminates is highly important for us. It helps to enhance our ink solutions specifically for packaging print providers and to further reinforce our technology leadership”, summarizes Dr. Hanns Martin Kaiser, Head of Technology Flexible Packaging

With the purchase of nordmeccanica group’s Labo Combi 400, Siegwerk has invested in an industry standard for technical centerscale tests. At a web width of 400mm the equipment operates at a maximum speed of 250m per minute and can handle solventfree, solvent-based as well as water-based adhesive systems on all standard substrates. The machine features two corona treatment

units and also meets all other European market requirements. Many co-suppliers, like manufacturers of adhesives or films, as well as some convertors also use the same laminator to conduct their own tests. This makes parameter comparisons easier and results reproducible and transferable. Siegwerk is now even better able to share application-related information, coordinate customer-specific solutions with other suppliers and therefore add forward-looking innovations to its portfolio of ink solutions.

Chinese first for Xeikon 3020 Xiamen Yu Long expands capabilities with 10 inch five colour digital label press Xeikon has installed China’s first Xeikon 3020 five colour label press at Xiamen Yu Long Printing Co. The Xeikon 3020 joins Xiamen Yu Long’s sheetfed, rotary letter press and offset web presses. Xiamen Yu Long Printing Co was founded in 2004. The label and folding carton operation’s portfolio of products includes leaflets, posters, brochures and packing boxes. Its key customers are from the garment, health and beauty sectors. Mr. Li Yin Long, Director of Xiamen Yu Long says, “Our maximum width of converting lines for coating, foiling and die cutting is 10 inches, which is why the 3020 format is a perfect fit. The ability to print variety of substrates, including PP, PET, PE, paper and metalized paper, was also important in our decision to buy. It fits the size and speed of our finishing equipment, and the Xeikon ICE toner allows us to work successfully with heat-sensitive material.” The Xeikon 3020 was specifically designed to address the Chinese 10-inch market for self-adhesive labels. This extension of the well-established 3000 series of Xeikon label presses delivers unmatched quality and productivity. Businesses can field upgrade their presses to faster speeds and larger sizes as their businesses grow and their needs change. Lee adds, “We also liked having the flexibility of upgrading both speed and size later without a huge investment. We have been pleasantly surprised with the press’s output and quality. In the first month using a single shift, we produced more than 50,000 meters of print, and we are planning to start a second shift soon. The installation and training process went well. I can guarantee you that this will not be the last Xeikon to be installed at Xiamen.” “Xeikon’s installed base in China is growing fast, and there are many more opportunities for growth in the label sector,” comments Jackie Chen of Xeikon Greater China. “Xeikon is totally committed to providing best-inclass service with a local service presence to support our growing customer base.”

Prime Minister Haseloff starts up the new KBA Commander CL “Every morning, I fetch the newspaper from the letterbox and lay it on the breakfast table for my wife” – it was with those words that Reiner Haseloff, Prime Minister of the German state of Saxony-Anhalt, initiated the official start-up of a new KBA Commander CL newspaper press at Hallebased Mitteldeutsche Zeitung, a member of the DuMont media group. “Long-term studies have shown that people view daily newspapers as the most credible of all media. They are seen as particularly discerning, competent, objective and critical,” he continued. Branch VIPs gather in Halle More than 100 prominent guests attended the inauguration ceremony at the MZ print centre, among them Christian DuMont Schütte, chairman of the supervisory board of the DuMont media group in Cologne, his deputy Isabella Neven DuMont, CEO Dr. Christoph Bauer, CFO Stefan Hütwohl and COO Otto Christian Lindemann. In his address, Stefan Hütwohl emphasised that the investment in the new press from Koenig & Bauer was for DuMont not only a commitment to the group’s Halle location,

but at the same time a demonstration of faith in the future of the printed newspaper. Longstanding partnership It was almost a year ago to the day that contracts were signed for the new Commander CL, continuing a partnership which has thrived for more than 180 years between DuMont and Koenig & Bauer. “I would like to give special mention to the exceptional cooperation with Koenig & Bauer. Sad passing of Xeikon founder Lucien De Schamphelaere “Once a project gets rolling, I tend to lose interest. I’m happiest at the start of it, when I can develop what doesn’t yet exist.” - Lucien De Schamphelaere The industry suffered the loss of Xeikon founder Lucien De Schamphelaere on January 20. He was 85. After a 40-year career with Agfa-Gevaert, where he was instrumental in forming the company’s Electronic Imaging System Department, De Schamphelaere wanted a new challenge. So, in August 1988 he established the limited liability company, Ellith NV, which started with just five employees. That name would soon be changed into Xeikon NV, the composition of the Greek words “xeros” (dry) and “eikon” (image). Five years later, at Ipex 1993, the company unveiled its prototype of the DCP-1. The digital colour press provided the basis for the company’s full-scale product line. In November 1994, the company introduced its Variable Data System, which allowed singlepass personalizing of individual pages.

Xeikon went public in March 1996. Less than six months later it launched the Xeikon DCP/32D digital colour press. The introduction of the Xeikon second generation helped net profits to reach more than US$1.8 million. In1997, Xeikon introduced the DCP/50D - the first digital colour press capable of printing B2. Now with 340 employees, the company also moved to new, larger, premises in Antwerp. 1998 saw the

38

January 2017

sale of its 1,000th digital colour press and a fifth colour unit was introduced to its presses, as well as an opaque white toner. The same year De Schamphelaere went on to found Triakon NV, a digital printing company specialising in point-of-sale. Xeikon went on to be acquired by Flint Group on 2015. It also launched the Xeikon CX3 digital label press and the Xeikon 9800 dry toner digital colour press. A year later in introduced Trillium One to take digital print production to a new level of quality and productivity.Wim Maes, Xeikon CEO comments: “We were so saddened to hear the news of Lucien’s death. He had an amazing passion for digital printing and unstoppable drive that lead him to achieve such an incredible amount in his lifetime. His dedication and pioneering approach remains a key cornerstone of Xeikon today.” Lucien De Schamphelaere graduated in 1952 as an engineer in electronics and started working that same year for the N.V. Gevaert PhotoProducts physics lab. In 1958, he transferred to instrumentation, a young department that had been created to automate machines and workflows at Gevaert. The department changed a lot during the fourteen years De Schamphelaere spent at its head. It grew from a small group of employees to a department of about 100 employees, and at the beginning of the seventies, Agfa-Gevaert was far ahead in automation. In the seventies, De Schamphelaere became more and more convinced that

traditional photochemistry would irreversibly be replaced by electronic imaging, and he quietly started working on an electronical printing machine with a group of close associates. In 1979, he started a new department, “Electronical Imaging Systems”, with the support of former company executives André Leysen and Etienne De Wolf. Only 3 years later, the small team could present the P400, its first digital black and white printing press, at the Hannover trade show. From 1986, as president of Agfa’s Venture Capital Fund, he was given the time to look for the most promising applications in digital imaging. By 1988, he had a blueprint ready for what would later become “Xeikon”. Agfa took a minority participation in this company, the rest of the equity was brought in by six additional investors. In 1993, Xeikon introduced the DCP-1, a digital colour printing press that could print without an ink sheet. The renowned magazine Seybold called it a “new standard for the colour printing market. The impact of the DCP-1 on colour printing is probably as big as the impact Apple LaserWriter had on black and white printing”. At the age of 67, De Schamphelaere retired from his position as Chief Executive Officer and in 1998, he left the presidency of Xeikon. In 1999, De Schamphelaere established Triakon, a printing centre used to further develop digital colour printing. All these years, he was a member of the Boards of Directors of Imec, Option, Melexis, Materialise and Hydrogen Systems. De Schamphelaere received multiple distinctions for his pioneering work in the graphics industry, including the GATF-award, the IS&T Award and the prestigious Cary Award (1997). Over his whole career, he remained very socially engaged, he was involved in his local parish and supported charities such as the ‘Rijsactie’ to help local missionaries.

“As with the developments we have all seen with personal computers and mobile technology, artificial intelligence promises to create more opportunities,” said Guy Gecht, CEO of EFI in his keynote address. “In print, it can drive preventive diagnostics and predictive maintenance, which helps our customers improve their top and bottom lines.”

Worldwide premiere of superwide roll-to-roll and soft signage printers During Connect, EFI is announcing its new VUTEk 5r and 3r printers, which are designed to be the industry’s most technically advanced LED roll-to-roll production offerings. Printing at speeds up to 4,896 square feet per hour in resolutions up to 1,200 dpi, the 5-meter EFI VUTEk 5r and 3-meter EFI VUTEk 3r printers maximize performance, efficiency and quality. Featuring high-resolution, 7-picoliter EFI UltraDrop Technology, the new printers offer the fastest throughput in the market, superior image quality and a lower total cost of ownership for premium graphics work. The printers are also available with a complete range of upgrade options for high productivity and versatility, including optional light colors and white for multi-layer printing; inline finishing for all-inone printing, cutting, slitting, and collecting; auto backlit and blockout printing, and more. Rami Cohen, general manager of the Rishon LeZion, Israel-based print business Campus Digital Imaging, recently replaced a pair of 2-meter solvent printers and a sublimation printer with the new VUTEk 3r model, a move that has reduced his turnaround times from two or three days to same- or next-day

delivery. “It’s faster than the three machines it replaces combined,” Cohen said of his new printer. “Before, we had to move finished rolls to a dedicated machine to cut them into sheets. Now, the sheeting and slitting happen on the fly, simultaneously with the printing itself.” The new, superwide, roll-to-roll LED printers are available now. The 5-meter VUTEk 5r printer is being shown for the first time in Connect’s center for innovation.

Superior, seamless imaging with the VUTEk FabriVU 520 printer Customers can take advantage of fastgrowing soft-signage opportunities using EFI’s largest soft signage printer, the 5.2-meter EFI VUTEk FabriVU 520 launched at Connect.
