FROM THE EDITORS’ DESK Dear Readers, “We surpassed all the numbers of PAMEX 2017 with a record 10,000 unique visitors on Day 3. We are sure that the next edition in March 2022 will be even bigger,” says Kamal Chopra, Chairman – PAMEX. As the curtains came down to the most successful edition of the four-day PAMEX 2020 on 9 January, the industry is bullish on the growth of Printing & Packaging in India. The show saw more than 32,000 visitors, 375+ exhibitors, 100+ product launches, 250+ running machines and many more attractions. For the very first time in the country, All India Federation of Master Printers (AIFMP) hosted the World Print & Communication Forum (WPCF) conference. Held on 8 January, 2020 – the topic of the conference was Redefining Printing – Brainstorming with World Leaders. This event saw delegates coming in from all over the world with speakers coming in from India, Japan, South Africa, China, Belgium & USA. Another concurrent event – the National Awards for Excellence in Printing (NAEP) – attracted printing and packaging experts from across the length and breadth of the country, casting the net deep and wide to unearth the industry’s finest. The awards also included the prestigious Viren Chabbra Print Leadership Award – instituted to honour Viren Chhabra’s legacy of a lifetime of support and accomplishments for AIFMP. PAMEX 2020 boldly asked one question – Where’s the Slowdown? The 14th Edition of PAMEX not only mirrored a vibrant Print Industry but also happened to be the most successful one yet. Heidelberg presented the Smart Print Shop and the innovative operating philosophy Push to Stop back at drupa 2016. It has been consistently enhanced and will reach new levels at drupa 2020 thanks to further automation and many intelligent assistants. The new Speedmaster drupa 2020 generation and the Prinect print shop workflow will open up a new dimension in economy and competitiveness for offset printing.

of intelligent assistance systems and artificial intelligence will be an impressive display of what is already possible today and where development will lead in the coming years. We are consistently thinking beyond the printing press here also, for example in the area of printing plate logistics.”

Premiere: “Plate to Unit” – fully automatic printing plate logistics reduces the operator’s workload and ensures higher process reliability Heidelberg will be presenting another milestone in sheetfed offset printing at drupa 2020: fully automatic printing plate logistics. Here the printing plates are provided fully automatically in the correct plate changing shaft and the used plates are removed – this is the only way to achieve consistently high productivity with short runs. As well as reducing the operator’s workload, process reliability is increased since damage caused by handling of the plates is systematically minimized. This increases the reliability of plate changes and reduces the risk of scratches on the plate causing paper waste.

Prof. Chopra received the award at the Republic Day function organised by FICO, commemorating the heroes of independence. Schumacher Packaging GmbH & Co. KG, one of Europe’s largest family-run packaging printers, with annual sales of approximately € 650 million, has signed a subscription contract with Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) for its site in Forchheim (Bavaria). The company, which is already a leader in productivity and technology in the corrugated and solid board packaging sector, expects to significantly boost the productivity of sheetfed offset operations at its Bavarian site as a result of the move. The subscription agreement includes a Speedmaster XL 145-6+LX with fully integrated logistics, which is replacing a competitor’s press, and all consumables, along with vendor-managed inventory and a comprehensive service package that also covers wear parts and new functions such as remote maintenance and consulting services. The press is scheduled to enter operation in Forchheim at the end of January 2020 and is the first large-format press in Germany on a subscription. “This shows that our subscription portfolio is an appealing and competitive offer for major packaging customers, too. A growing number of customers are being won over by the collaborative nature of this offer, which aligns the interests of both contract partners,” explains Prof. Ulrich Hermann, Chief Digital Officer Lifecycle Solutions at Heidelberg. Schumacher Packaging has achieved sustainable, international growth over the years and plans to further expand its activities. Heidelberg Subscription – the growing pay-per-use trend The Heidelberg Subscription model is following the growing pay-per-use trend in mechanical engineering and moving further away from simply selling presses. Under this Heidelberg model, customers only pay for the number of sheets actually printed. The price per sheet under the top configuration level of the new digital business model includes all equipment, all consumables required – such as printing plates, inks, coatings, washup solutions, and blankets – and a comprehensive range of services geared to availability. Heidelberg is launching new variants of the digital business model to widen its appeal to an ever-growing number of print shops. If customers so wish, Heidelberg will also take care of all aspects of logistics operations for consumables as part of a subscription package (vendor-managed inventory). The rollout is going according to plan and is to be expanded. Establishing pay-per-use models in industrial offset printing is the result of the ongoing digital transformation at Heidelberg, and also the company’s software and data expertise. Heidelberg offers customers a complete smart system comprising press, services, consumables, consulting, and software solutions. A holistic system of this kind could not be managed dependably without big data applications – such as in predictive maintenance – and the company’s Push to Stop approach to autonomous printing.

KMPA inaugurates Golden Jubilee celebrations The year is being celebrated marking the association’s portfolio of achievements over the years. 4th of January, 2020, was a special day for Kerala Master Printers Association. The year 2020 marked the association’s much-awaited Golden Jubilee Celebrations, showcasing a grand portfolio of achievements of KMPA in the printing industry. The event was organised at the spacious The Versailles hall of hotel The Renai Cochin, Palraivattom, Ernakulam. The occasion was graced by Mr. Dibyajyoti Kalita, President of All India Federation of Master Printers (AIFMP) who was the Chief Guest; Smt. Sarada Rajendran – wife of late M. Rajendran, founder President of KMPA – who was the Guest of Honour; Mr. R. Gopakumar, President of KMPA; Mr. Biju Jose, Hon. Gen. Secretary of KMPA; and Mr. O.Venugopal, Co-ordinator of KMPA among others. Smt. Sarada Rajendran graced the event despite her ill-health. Special invitee Mr. C. Ravinder Reddy, Vice President (South) of AIFMP spoke about the nascent Telengana Offset Printers Association (TOPA), of which he is also the President. Mr. Reddy stressed on the motivation given by KMPA to improve printing processes in the state, and printing education to students in Telengana. All three distinguished guests, Mr. Kalita, Smt. Rajendran, and Mr. Reddy were felicitated and honoured for their invaluable contribution towards the printing industry. Past Presidents and Past Hon. Gen. Secretaries of KMPA were honoured for their leadership and guidance. Past Presidents honoured at the event include late M.

Rajendran, R. Suresh, O. Venugopal, Joseph Muttathottil, G. Venugopal, and S. Saji. Past Hon. Gen. Secretaries were also honoured - P. R. Nair, P. S. Rajan, Manmohan Shenoy, and Rajesh.G. 21 senior employees of KMPA members, each of whom have completed over 35 years of service in the print industry, were awarded at the function. Those who have a reached a milestone of 50 years amongst them includes A. K. Puthussery, S. T. Reddiar & Sons (62 years); Radhakrishnan V. and E. G. Sasidharan, Anaswara Offset (P) Ltd (52 years); and Narayanan Nair, Rajsree Industrial Printer (50 Years). 13 KMPA members, who have been into the print business for more than 50 years, were also awarded for standing the test of time, with their dedication and passion in the field of printing. They include S. T. Reddiar & Sons, Ernakulam; Valavi & Co., Ernakulam; St.

Francis Press, Ernakulam; Ambal Offset Printers, Palakkad; Jai Hind Printers, Aluva; SB Press (P) Ltd., Thiruvananthapuram; St. Joseph’s Press, Thiruvananthapuram; The Swaraj Printers, Kochi; The Union Press, Thrissur, Ebenezer Printers, Thrissur; Vivid Offset Printers, Thrissur; Spartan Printers, Alappuzha; and Viani Printings, Ernakulam. Both Mr. Kalita and Mr. Reddy spoke highly in praise of the great work done by the members of KMPA to promote the printing fraternity as a whole with their innovative and clairvoyant approach. KMPA celebrated this event as a great awakening for promoting the best days in the printing industry for the year 2020. President of KMPA, R. Gopakumar, presided over the function. The celebrations were drawn to an end by an entertainment programme organised by the ladies forum of KMPA.

Fujifilm expands footprint in India Fujifilm India expands with new office in Bangalore; to better serve its customers.

If there’s a slowdown, it did not show at PAMEX 2020. As the curtains came down to the most successful edition of the four-day PAMEX 2020 on 9 January, the industry is bullish on the growth of Printing & Packaging in India. The show saw more than 32,000 visitors, with Day 3 seeing, for the first time, more than 10,000 unique visitors in a day. Several deals were being reported from the venue itself. Also, the exhibition was coming just a few months before Drupa and the expectations were that customers would like to wait to see the new technologies unveiled at the world’s greatest Show before making their investment decisions. However, as PAMEX got underway, even on the first day itself, several reports of deals being made at the grounds started surfacing. As visitors thronged the venue on all the four days and by the time the show shut its doors, it was evident that an unprecedented amount of business had been recorded in this edition.

Zhongke India sold fifteen machines at the exhibition… On the first day of PAMEX 2020 itself,

Zhongke India sold its Yongshun YS KC 108 automatic speed window lamination machine to Chennai-based RS Graphics. “This will mark the machine’s first installation in India,” said Rohit Rajpal, Director, Zhongke India on the adoption of the new window lamination machine. VB Sridharan, Managing Partner, RS Graphics, was fully impressed with the high-end features of dry lamination with glue that is applied to the pre-cut sheets and the curing done by infrared devices. Udaipur-based Miraj Multicolour also finalised an order for the same machine while the Bengaluru-based Asha Sweets Center bought an automatic rigid box-making machine. Vadodara-based Concord Printing invested in a Wenhong 1050 SF automatic die-cutting and hot-foil stamping machine and a LC-740 automatic corner cutting and line pressing

window patching machine. “More than 3600 visitors visited our stall During the 4 days and we booked orders for over 15 machines and have many inquiries in the process that we expect to finalise soon,” added Rajpal.

Ample Graphics sold rigid box manufacturing line to Tholasi Print India and finalised many other deals… Again, on the first day of PAMEX 2020, Ample Graphics sold its fully integrated Lishunyuan line of rigid box making machine to Bengaluru-based Tholasi Prints India. The machine features robotic arm positioning system, in-line case making system, etc. The compact high-speed Chengling Tech folder-gluer was bought by Ruchipack from Rajasthan and the AOER fully automatic

Canon India, during PAMEX 2020, sold its imagePRESS C8000 to Mumbai-based Commercial Art Engravers. The press is equipped with Fiery B4100 software for VDP personalisation and it is designed for VDP, photo, barcode and QR code.

Mumbai-based print finishing equipment specialist Hitech sold over 50 Machines worth over Rs 2.3 crore. The key highlight among the range of flagship products the company was showing at the expo was its widely popular iECHO PK 0640 & PK 0604 Plus automatic intelligent cutting system.

“We booked 8 machines including the RHINO DEXA TWIN DECK Coater during PAMEX for orders totalling around Rs. 5 Crore. We got orders from Algeria and Nepal,” said Kapil Dev, General Manager, Alpana Visual Packaging Aids.

KOMORI sold two Machines… Delhi-based Advantage Offset booked a KOMORI Lithrone G437 during PAMEX 2020 on the first day of the exhibition. The machine can run at the maximum speed up to 15000 sph with online coater. Advantage Offset is aiming at doubling their volume of production with the new KOMORI press.

PAMEX 2020 mirrors a vibrant Print Industry PAMEX 2020 presented the face of a vibrant industry with a grand show at Mumbai’s Bombay Exhibition Centre. The optimism shown by the industry was quite obvious and the 14th edition of the event saw a 15 percent growth in exhibitor area and a whopping 20 percent higher visitor turnout. The economy has been going through a bad face and PAMEX outcome was under some serious doubt with investment decisions generally being postponed and technology adaptation being timid. Belying all apprehensions of the perceived slowdown in the economy in general and the Printing Industry in particular, the real success story of PAMEX was “not in the increased numbers alone but also in the quality and the geographical range of visitors that it attracted,” opined Deepak Chawla, GM-Marketing, Technova. The event concluded on 9 January 2020 on an enthusiastic note. Several exhibitors reported many serious enquiries and also significant sales on the ground. The visitor enthusiasm seen a few months before the major Industry event – Drupa, held great portends for the International industry players that are looking to India to provide an even greater footfall to the International event than the 19000 printers that it sent in the last edition.

The world thought leaders converged in the parallel WPCF conference to brief the printers on new industry trends and opportunities as they gear themselves to meet the growing challenges posed by shrinking traditional business and changing customer expectations. The industry also found time to honour its stalwarts at the VCLA award and celebrate the excellence of its printers at the NAEP Awards in glittering functions that added a lot of allure to the ongoing exhibition. “The success of an event of this magnitude does not happen as a co-incidence. A lot of meticulous planning and hard work goes into the promotion and organising of the event. I congratulate the entire AIFMP and Print-Packaging team for pulling off a great exhibition with such élan,” said Kamal Chopra, Chairman, PAMEX who had spearheaded an International Outreach Program and a grassroots Print Odyssey in the months leading to the exhibition. Autoprint launched Checkmate 25 at the recently concluded Pamex 2020 at Bombay Exhibition Centre. A smaller version of its successful Checkmate 50, the new machine targets the need of manufacturers who want to address smaller carton sizes of less than 250 mm. The new carton inspection system adds a new chapter in the success story of proven Checkmate 50 with already over 40 installations domestically and internationally. APL Machinery showcases Made in India LED UV Pamex 2020 proved a great platform to showcase products and maintain their social presence for APL Machinery, according to Vibhati Paul, Sales Executive Export. “To an extent our aim has been accomplished,” Vibhati notes. “Let us hope for an amazing year ahead, better than the last one in terms of scaling up more with success, growth and joy.” The best part of APL’s showcase at Pamex was their made in India LED. Vibhati explains, “The best part of our stall was that the idea to showcase our LED which is purely made in India was fulfilled. The aim was to let people and the industry know that LED UV can be manufactured in India as well. Komori highlights GL 37+C at Pamex 2020 Secures eight orders; entertains high quality focused visitors. “Pamex has always been a good experience for Komori where we do get to connect with customers and introduce our solution bases products,” says Sangam Khanna of Komori, which was focusing its flagship GL 37+C at the show. “It’s been good but only the focused customers visited us this time,” he adds He sees the current year better than the last year for Komori, as “the needs of the customers are transforming – instead of buying products they now focus of solutions

and total solutions from end-toend,” according to Sangam. Komori secured eight orders at the Pamex show. The details of the deals will be revealed after completion of all the formalities, says Sangam. It was really exciting to see that the customer came with his home work done before Pamex,” emphasises Sangam. Komori GL 37+C was their star product. “The

Monotech Systems’ Pamex 2020 stand remained crowded on all days of the show. “I must say Pamex 2020 was quite successful for us,” says Akash Kumar, Senior Manager – Marketing & Communications, Monotech Systems. “The show was extremely good for us. In fact, we were passive as far as expectation from the show is concerned considering the current economic situation in mind, but response was encouraging. We got a good number of leads and people showed interest in investing in the right technology. This edition of Pamex was much better than the previous edition in terms of footfall,” he adds. Speaking of the last year performance and expectations for the present, he says, “We have achieved modest growth this year mainly because of the economic slowdown in the country. However, the company may register a better turnaround in Q4, which usually is the highest-grossing quarter. We

The recent Pamex 2020 proved a good show for Suba Solutions. The company had some successful order closures apart from attracting a great visitor interest for its showcased solutions. “In volatile global economic conditions, lead time between order confirmation and execution has become unpredictable,” says Vaidy, Director Suba Solutions expressing his concern regarding present market conditions. “World economy is volatile and India is an integral part,” he adds. “Even at Printpack we booked a lot of machines at the show. Mr. Mohan Pailwan, GM, looked quite excited at the outcome. “The show was well attended by serious visitors, with some serious plans for investments. It was great to see that our industry – despite challenging times – is very optimistic and proactive,” states Mohan.

If online selling is synonymous with democratisation, it is reasonable to think that every printing business can benefit from this opportunity; surprisingly, even those who don’t have real (actual) production capacity and sometimes not even machinery.

If the Internet has democratised access to information and social media have stimulated interaction between brands, retailers and consumers, Amazon has convinced buyers of all kinds and all ages that buying online is safe, comfortable and even rewarding. And printed products, although more complex and full of customisation and creativity, do not seem to be an exception. The first fledgling phenomena of online print sales go back to the 1990s, but it is only in the last decade that such sales have really taken on significant size, as large players progressively raise the bar in their services and investments and disproportionately broaden their product portfolio, their range of ancillary services, also the geographical reach. All this to the point whereby both the large national operators – those still without an online store, of course – and the thousands of small local print-service providers are all wondering how appropriate it is to enter an already crowded, mature arena. Above all they are asking themselves what the real prospects for growth and development are, and which investments have to be made. Although almost all online businesses have some elements in common – strong automation, effective quality management, impeccable customer care – online printing is not an exact science, nor does it provide for a common or standard organisational model that can be just adopted and copied indefinitely. It’s also our most expensive revenue stream, as there’s a tangible cost associated with printing.” MyCreativeShop, which leverages CHILI Publish’s powerful automated publishing infrastructure, is a lightweight, scalable model that enables the American company to serve customers worldwide while remaining incredibly small.

Among the thousands of local experiences, the Italian skillpress.it is an example of how it is possible to digitise and bring online the art of typography. The small company, born from the love for typography of Maurizio and Marco Battiston, has chosen to subvert the logic of standardisation that characterises almost all online suppliers. Skillpress, whose firepower is limited to an HP Indigo 12000HD and a modern finishing department, has turned total freedom of size, substrate, grammage, finish and quantity into its strengths. “We invest a lot in training and advice to our customers for the choice of papers, finishes and binding methods; we also produce the single copy for them, and we treat each project as if it were unique,” explains Battiston. “Although many find it senseless and uneconomic, for us it is a winning model, and our customers recognize us as true craftsmen of online digital printing.”

3) Between decoration and hyper-verticalization, make way for solution makers! If design plays a crucial role in the development of “conventional” printing projects, its importance increases if we enter the field of unusual applications, with substrates and surfaces that have little or nothing to do with commercial printing and display graphics. It’s new territory, made up of operators that we could define as solution makers, able to satisfy a new printing demand, often creating an offer completely separate from that of other PSPs. Most of them have gained specific experience outside the graphic arts, to the point that their portfolio ranges from fabrics

to wallpapers, from photographic paper to pictorial canvas, up to gift-wrapping paper. This is the case of the American spoonflower. com, the Dutch motiflow.com and the Italian thecolorsoup.com, three businesses with different histories and sizes, all sharing a strong orientation towards textile substrates. But above all the desire to combine simple print output with an unlimited range of designs and patterns, searchable by theme or colour, sometimes scalable in size, created by young international designers, who find visibility and business opportunities on the platform. An open and meritocratic attitude that involves new stakeholders, and generates a spontaneous network of promoters for printing infrastructures. Among the solution makers, there are also those who have focused on niche applications, such as the British moo.com. Founded in 2006 by Richard Moss, the company has always been inspired by the passion of its CEO for extreme design and quality, which MOO uses to transform the segment of business cards, considered by many others as just a commodity. “The exchange of a business card is often the first time a potential contact, customer or investor interacts with a company or brand. Having a carefully designed premium card helps you stand out in a crowded market,” says Amanda Champion, Marketing & Communications Manager at MOO. “MOO is just over 12 years old and had £100 million in revenue in 2018. 4) Profiting from new segments: Packaging as the next big thing Today, packaging is the market that expresses the highest volumes, growth rates and margins. At the same time, except for promotional containers and gadgets, it is the most challenging segment to deal with. Making packaging involves managing a multitude of variables, such as the design of effective templates and die-cutting patterns, adherence to strict quality and safety standards, impeccable reproduction of spot colours, the use of enhancement, the integration of packaging into industrial packaging processes, the durability needed for shipping and for display at the point of sale and effectiveness (impact) in its interaction with consumers. who have introduced it, perhaps limiting themselves to simple products that can be made with standard papers, weights and sizes. Among the pioneers of web-topack, there is the Italian pack.ly, a software company founded in 2014 to open the way for designers, agencies, small converters or simply newcomers to design, approve and purchase online professional packaging. “We have found that the packaging industry was still conditioned by complex and expensive production methods, inaccessible to a large part of the market. That’s why we designed software that would make digital die-cutting and 3D rendering accessible to everyone,” explains Giuseppe Prioriello, Founder and CEO of Packly. Entirely web-based, but also accessible via API, Packly gives access to a library of models, fully customizable in size and substrate, to apply your graphic layout. Unexpectedly, the CCL Group, the global giant of labels, is presenting itself as a real game-changer. With its self-adhesive skills and converting capacity to satisfy the most demanding brand owners, in 2018 the Canadian group launched online portals such as etikett.de in Germany and etichetta. it in Italy, and acquired established operators such as easy2name.com in the UK.

Cost-effectiveness in label printing Process variability is a key factor in the total cost of ownership – by Dieter Finna The total cost of label production is determined by three key factors: quality, cost, and productivity. These must not be considered in isolation from each other, which nevertheless occurs due to the complexity in practice. While clear ideas exist regarding the achievable quality and costs of a label printing machine prior to any investment decision, productivity in consideration of the process variability often receives too little attention when making a purchase decision. How big the influence of this criterion on the total operating costs is, is shown in the following example.

In investment planning, the market segments in which the machine is to be used are at the beginning of a detailed analysis. The analysis in this example shows that the market and customer structure essentially consists of customers in the segments of cosmetics, wine & spirits, medicines (over-the-counter) as well as orders in security printing, e.g. tax stamps for tobacco. This results in the potential market segments for which the machine is configured. We are looking for a machine system that meets the specific requirements of these market segments. It should also be noted that all mentioned market segments are characterized by small to medium run lengths as well as high run lengths, i.e. a large number of jobs with many different printing processes and substrates.

Modular design and configurability In order to meet the wide range of requirements identified, a freely configurable and expandable machine system with a high degree of automation is required. In the market, such machine systems are offered by various manufacturers. To illustrate this, two of the most commonly used machine types are used as references in the market. The machine of manufacturer A has a max. print width of 430 mm (17 “) with a specified machine speed of max. 160 m/min., the machine of the manufacturer B has a max. printing width of 410 mm (16 “) and a max. machine speed of 170 m/min. Both machines can be configured individually or in combination with all printing units, such as offset, flexo and rotary screen printing, hot foil stamping and cold foil printing, for the requirements of the aforementioned market segments. They have a high degree of automation for dynamic feed adjustment, presetting of length and cross register and for repeat jobs, machine settings can be recalled from the main memory in addition to also having automatic washing units. In a nutshell, from a technical point of view, there is comparable machine equipment, but the machines differ in terms of acquisition costs. The price of machine B is approximately 20% lower than the price of machine A, which would consequently influence a purchase decision, taking into account the criteria listed, clearly in favour of machine B.

What influence does the process variability have? Market segments such as cosmetics and wine labels require a high number of process changes per shift in label printing. For wine labels, 4 process changes per shift are the rule, sometimes even as many as 7 process changes. For this reason, the changeover times for a process change are very much at the forefront of a profitability analysis. With machine A, for example, process changes can take place while the machine is running, that is, printing units that are not required for

the current job can already be prepared for the follow-up job. If, as in the given order structure, many process changes are required, i.e. printing units of different printing processes are interchanged, the sum of the process change times has a significant influence on the economic efficiency of a machine system in narrow web printing. With regard to the process change times themselves – which is often underestimated in an investment decision – the two reference machines differ significantly. The changeover time for a process change is 5 minutes for machine A, without separating the web and with fully automatic setup using a changeover trolley, while it is 30 minutes for machine B. With a corresponding number of process changes, this difference clearly affects the cost-effectiveness of a machine system.

Economic efficiency Using a TCO calculator (Total Cost of Ownership calculator), which the machine manufacturer applies for cost comparison, it can be determined, which machine system with its specific acquisition costs in the determined order structure and the assumed average number of 4 process changes per shift has the highest efficiency. This shows that even a higher purchase price of a machine pays for itself in a relatively short time if the process change time of the machine system is shorter. If, for example, the purchase price of the machines differs by 400,000 EUR, the higher acquisition costs are amortized by savings in the process changes in daily operation in this

An additional advantage is that with machine A, the material web does not have to be separated when changing the process, which means additional material savings. With an average of 12 m of web lost per process change, 4 process changes per shift result in a further savings of approx. 7,000 EUR per year in three-shift operation. These material savings alone also significantly reduce the amortization period of the extra cost of machine A significantly.

How the process change works The more complex a print product, the more frequently process changes in production are necessary, because depending on the job requirements, an application requires the use of the printing units in different positions. The most common process changes in the beauty segment are primarily flexo to screen printing and vice versa, but also an offset printing unit often has to be replaced with a flexo, a screen printing or a hot foil stamping unit. Screen printing is, for example, used for opaque white, fine lettering or for depositing white. Flexographic printing stands for the cost-effective application of inks and coatings as well as the printing of spot colours.

Summary A more detailed analysis reveals that machine A and machine B can only be compared at first glance. The decisive factor in an investment is not just the total investment and the achievable quality, but also the overall performance. In this context, in addition to qualitative aspects, the process variability of the machine system is essential, especially with frequent process changes. The reason is simple: fast process changeovers and set-up times have a decisive influence on the total operating costs. As orders become smaller, this influence becomes ever stronger. Especially in the case of an order structure with many changes, it is therefore worth investing in a highly automated, flexible label printing system despite the higher initial costs. The seemingly more expensive machine proves to be the more economical solution under these general conditions.

Successful LMAI digital print technologies event in south India LMAI organised “DIGITAL PRINTING IN LABELS - THE WAY FORWARD” at ITC Welcome Hotel, Chennai on the 20th of December 2019. The narrow web label industry is a smaller segment of the larger diverse printing and packaging industry. It remains in focus for being the face of all products and an imperative identity providing part of any package. It is estimated by many that the Printing industry in India is growing at over 12% per annum. Some segments get slower and there are others like packaging are growing at a faster pace of 17% to compensate the shortfall by registering better growth. The label industry has been growing in a very wide band between 10 and 25%, the growth has always been in double digits. While Offset is the largest segment of the printing technologies employed yet the past 2-3 decades have seen growth in adoption of other printing processes like flexography, Rotogravure and Screen.

In recent times the convenience of “just in time computer to print capabilities” has resulted in adoption of digital printing by many printers such that the segment is registering robust growth of 30%. The narrow web label industry that is largely employing flexographic printing has been conservative and hesitant in adopting digital printing for labels because of higher investment in capital equipment, expensive inks and costly printheads needing replacements resulting in costlier labels in comparison to those produced on their existing equipment. The return on investment appeared to be unattractive. It was just

a matter of time that the growth of digital printing of labels in India would start to attract investment. FINAT, the European label Association with global membership had reported a couple of years ago that European investments in digital presses for labels in a year had exceeded that in flexo presses. We now see an evident interest and indulgence in this digital label printing technology by Indian printers as well. products and finally Vikram Saxena of Xeikon informed that digital printing was picking up pace with over 32 high-end installations reported in India. He further informed the benefits of dry toner digital printing technology and that it did not require any precoated media. Bringing flexo platemaking more in harmony with the environment At drupa Asahi will demonstrate new Water Recycling Unit which can reduce platemaking waste water usage by 80%. Existing Asahi platemaking systems can be retrofitted with the recycling unit so that all Asahi platemaking processes are more in harmony with the environment.

Asahi Photoproducts has announced the latest development in its CleanPrint strategy, a water recycling unit incorporated in new Asahi platemaking systems as a standard feature. This recycling unit uses 2 litres of water per square meter, versus 10 litres in units without the recycling unit, a reduction in platemaking waste water of 80%. In addition, minimal waste from the system, in the form of dry cake and a highly concentrated liquid extract, can be incinerated, with the liquid contributing to the cooling of the incineration plant, resulting in even more water savings.

Flint Ink price rise Flint Group Packaging Inks has announced a price increase on all inks and coatings with immediate effect. The company has cited the recent events in Middle East triggering an increase in oil prices and consequently in the price of solvent raw materials used in the manufacture of inks and coatings. “The instability and current increases necessitate that Flint Group Packaging Inks in India initiate a price increase with immediate effect,” says Upal Roy, Managing Director, Flint Group India.

Effective immediately, a price increase will apply to all orders. However, the company may reconsider the price rise with necessary adjustment if oil prices drop at certain level. Upal Roy explains, “We understand that price increases have become an almost ‘routine’ matter. EFI VUTEk D3r debuts at Connect user conference EFI’s new, mid-volume roll-to-roll LED 3m and 5m printer line enables unlimited designs and applications with top-quality prints. Electronics For Imaging (EFI) launched a new mid-range roll-to-roll printer line that helps sign and display graphics customers drive more volume with high-end digital print for endless applications and designs. The new EFI VUTEk D3r and D5r LED inkjet printers leverage many of the advanced capabilities from EFI’s highly successful VUTEk 3r+ and 5r+ printers, offering a mid-range solution for an even wider variety of high value applications thanks to its combination of white and clear inks, as well as its Museum print mode. The new printer line also supports the unique collection of options for VUTEk roll-to-roll LED printers, providing a full system for higher efficiency and a lower total cost of ownership. The VUTEk D3r, which prints up to 2,196 square feet per hour, made its worldwide debut at the EFI Connect users’ conference, Jan. 21-24 in Las Vegas, and made its European debut at the EFI EMEA Ignite event on Jan. 29 in Brussels, Belgium. The second printer in the new mid-range line, the VUTEk D5r, prints up to 2,626 square feet per hour. Early D5r users such as Thomas Printworks in the United States and Allgraf in Italy have purchased the new printer line for its performance capabilities to meet growing demand for high-end signage, décor, outdoor graphics and other applications. “We were looking to upgrade our 5-meter printing capabilities, and when we found the EFI VUTEk D5r, it checked all the boxes

related to speed, quality, cost of operation, and efficiency,” said Bryan Thomas, president at Thomas Printworks. “The quality of the machine was so impressive that it gave us the added benefit of also replacing a 3-meter printer within our fleet.” “Our choice to buy the EFI VUTEk D5r was a winning decision,” said Agostino Allegris, CEO and president at Allgraf. “The printing resolution, the possibilities of white printing and the inline clear ink are unique features and they give us a competitive edge. Now, we have the ability to print a full flood or selective clear ink in glossy or matte. We are excited of the possibilities of printing a whole series of innovative applications and materials.”

High-end UltraDrop Technology and high efficiency The D3r and D5r printers, at 3.5- and 5.2-meters wide respectively, deliver outstanding smoothness in shadows, gradients and transitions with UltraDrop Technology, precise and sharp 3-point size text, and a true resolution of up to 1,200 dots per inch. An ultra-high-definition print mode offers near-photographic quality. The printers’ LED curing ensures not only cost savings but also a more environmentally sound printing solution, consuming less energy and enabling the use of thinner, heat-sensitive substrates.

The VUTEk D line is equipped with additional printheads and offers both white and jettable clear ink for matte and glossy effects, covering a wider amount of unique applications such as wall decorations and murals, window graphics, flooring, highvalue prints with selective gloss effects, fleet graphics, truck-side curtains and more. The printers are easily customizable to the purchaser’s needs and strategies, with optional features including: • White and clear ink; • Inline x-cutters and y-slitters; • Automatic backlit and block-out printing; • Media spreaders and motorized winders; and more. Both printers include EFI’s industry-leading Fiery proServer SE digital front end, allowing increased productivity as well as accurate coulor matching every time. For added productivity, users can choose to add a software productivity pack and are able to remotely connect with the printers using a mobile application. Landa has announced that the Chinese packaging giant, Zhongrong Printing Group (ZRP), has completed the installation and launched the first Landa S10 Nanographic Printing Press in Asia Pacific. ZRP will use its Landa press to deliver faster, higherquality digital colour printing of short to medium-run packaging for its large and prominent customer base of Chinese FMCG businesses. The single-sided B1 (41 in. / 1,050 mm) format Landa S10 Nanographic Printing Press enables just-in-time mainstream efficiency for the production of folding carton and POP/POS applications. With a higher throughput than any other digital sheetfed press in the industry, the Landa S10 prints 6,500 large format sheets per hour on off-theshelf substrates in thickness from 2.4-32 pt. (60-800μm).
