Vishwakala Printers installs India’s first Heidelberg SX 52 four colour press with Coater The Bangalore based firm has installed the Heidelberg workhorse along with a Stahlfolder and a PUR Binder. Bangalore’s Vishwakala Printers is a first generation company started some three decades ago by the present Managing Partner Mr. H.C.Vishwanath Babu. The small Letterpress unit entered into Offset printing after ten years. After working with a single colour Offset press for around four years, the firm installed its first Heidelberg – a refurbished two colour press in the 1998. They followed it up with a used Heidelberg SM 74 four colour press in 2005.
“We always believe that Heidelberg equipment is one level ahead of the competition. With Heidelberg equipment we are able to offer our customers 210 screen ruling print jobs.” H.C.Vishwanath Babu

“Going with the technological trend we installed a CtP in 2006,” says Babu. In 2008 they installed India’s second Heidelberg XL75 four colour press with coater. Last year, they installed an Indian first – a Heidelberg SX 52 four colour press with Coater along with a Stahlfolder and the Heidelberg PUR Binder. “Along with this Heidelberg equipment, we also installed the Saddle Stitcher and Perfect Binder and Gatherer from Muller Martini,” adds Babu. They have all Post-press equipment like Foiling, Punching, Case Making and UV Coating machines in house. “Initially we had problems in finishing the printed product. Though we brought out good prints, due to use of manual finishing equipment, the final finished output was not up to our expectations,” recalls Babu. But today Vishwakala is one of the best equipped complete printing facility for various needs of
customers for printing as well as finishing. “With the installation of the XL75 along with other Post-press equipment from Muller Martini, we started investing in new machines,” says Babu, who considers this development as one of the major milestones for their business. “Used equipment throws up various issues like print quality, service issues, frequent breakdowns etc. So, going forward we will try investing in new machinery wherever possible” he says.
Expansion of market segment with the XL 75 Earlier, Vishwakala used to cater to jobs suitable for a Letterpress – undertaking small jobs from corporates and offices and printing their office stationery and gate passes etc. They could expand further into the commercial segments only after their XL 75 installation. “As we added new equipment, we got deeper into commercial segments like catalogues, brochures, garment tags etc. With the installation of the XL75 we added to our gamut of customer base and now serve customers in varied segments like advertising, entertainment, garment industry, packaging, coffee table book, magazines etc. As we grew, customers also started demanding high quality

jobs at shorter delivery time. This resulted in investing in high-end equipment in all areas from Prepress to Post-press,”This helped us cut our dependence on outsourced jobs, explains Babu. “Our high quality production, timely delivery and customer service are our high points to retain our customers,” he says. They have done many advanced, high value added brochures for the garment and jewellery segment. The consistent high quality products that Vishwakala delivers have regularly wonfor them National Awards for Excellence in Printing (NAEP). They have been continuously winning a lot of the coveted awards since 2007. Babu endorses the common view of many other Heidelberg users that investing in Heidelberg is a life time investment. “It is a workhorse that will serve you through your life without any service problems,” he emphasises. “The support of Heidelberg is also very good. We always believe that Heidelberg equipment is one level ahead of the competition. With Heidelberg equipment we are able to offer our customers 210 screen ruling print jobs. Our relationship with Heidelberg is not a supplier-user relationship. It is a type of family bonding. I would say Heidelberg is an extension of our family,” continues Babu. Their current focus is on the commercial segment where print volumes are high. They don’t have any immediate plans of entering into the digital print segment because highvolume segment can be “effectively served only by Offset and not digital technology,” believes Babu. “Though the print market is moving towards shorter print runs, we get enough jobs with bigger print runs. Moreover there is limitation in finishing capabilities and value addition in Digital technology

which can be effectively implemented only in Offset,” he further asserts.
looking back –it has been only Heidelberg,” reiterates Babu.
Within the commercial segment, he plans to enter into more advanced printing jobs and also get into the packaging segment. Vishwakala’s present infrastructure is fully equipped to meet these requirements and Babu sees plenty of opportunities in the package printingsegment in Bangalore.
He continues with the praise and points out some unique aspects of his Heidelberg machine: “It has consistent quality printing. Particularly, the CIP3 and CIP4 options make it easier for data storage and transfer for consistent quality printing of repeat orders. These advanced features of Heidelberg have enabled us to get into new market segments, increase customer satisfaction and add more and more customers and thereby increase our bottom line as well.”
Strength of team efficiency and brand new equipment He considers his employees as a part of his family and says that it is this unique relationship with them that has resulted in an almost non-existent attrition rate. “The high efficiency of our team – from pre press to post press – along with our brand new equipment constitutes our strength. We have standardized processes and all aspects like quality, density, finishing, delivery etc. are automatically taken care of as per job card specifications and without need for any supervision,” reveals Babu. He also openly declares himself as a 100% satisfied user of Heidelberg equipment. “After using a single colour offset press and later a used Heidelberg SM 74 four colour offset press, we invested in the SM 74 which strengthened our confidence in the production efficiency of Heidelberg machines. After that there has been no
He also sees shrinking volumes in offset due to expansion of digitalization and online e-Commerce. Consequently, he is getting more into packaging segments now. “We see more and more UV applications in the days to come, an area we see as a great opportunity,” he says. “I am satisfied with the growth achieved and I don’t have any regrets for being inthe printing industry. I am a wild life photographer and go to the forests whenever I have some time to spare. My mother is my partner in the business. My daughter is in the final year of business management. May be she is the next partner to assist us in our future goals,” concludes Babu.
New Enfocus PitStop 13 introduces next-gen Preflight and Automated Bleed Creation Enhanced Preflighting engine and a solution for bleed issues provide big benefits to anybody working with PDF files in print production Enfocus has re-engineered the functionality within PitStop 13 to increase the opportunities to preflight and correct PDF files, with a major focus on a solution for the very common issue of ‘no or insufficient bleed’.
of our engineering team to ensure that PitStop 13, which contains both enhancements and brand new functionality, stays ahead of market demands and secures our continuing leadership position in the preflight and auto-correction arena.”
PitStop 13 has a re-designed Preflight engine that addresses the challenges of creating high-quality PDFs and is structured to ensure the submission of high-quality PDFs, today, tomorrow and well into the future. It includes a new option to generate bleed where none currently exists and the ability for users to customise the language and content of the error messaging within Preflight reports, including the use of languages for which the software has not yet been localised.
More targeted, relevant checks and corrections
Andrew Bailes-Collins, Senior Product Manager responsible for the PitStop product family, explains: “As PDF files are now being used for more and more complex print jobs and deadlines are becoming increasingly tighter, it became obvious to the PitStop development team that the current Preflight engine needed some improvements in order to support the current and future needs of our users. The result is the next generation of PDF Preflight and correction. In addition to paying close attention to customer feedback, we unleashed the creativity
Another major enhancement in PitStop13 is the Add Bleed Action, which allows bleed to be generated even if none exists in the original file.
Key Notes : > PitStop13 will be released in April 2015. > Addresses the challenges of creating high-quality PDFs. > Users benefit from a much more targeted Preflight check.
12
January 2015
Preflight Restrictions represents the most significant change to the PitStop Preflight library since it was created 15 years ago. It allows the checks and fixes included in a preflight profile to be limited to certain aspects of a PDF. For example, a PDF page box, a certain page or pages, a particular area or specific elements of a PDF, even different layers within a PDF file can each be checked in different ways, depending upon user requirements. The options for customising Preflight are now virtually endless. This means that PitStop 13 users benefit from a much more targeted Preflight check, receiving fewer irrelevant warnings and errors. It also enables the ability to carry out complex quality control routines, thoroughly checking files in one processing pass. Because the PitStop Preflight editor interface, already familiar to hundreds of thousands of users around the globe, has only minimal changes, the new
pressideas/ commercial printing
functionality can be implemented without any major retraining or re-reading of product manuals. This is a significant benefit for users.
Automatic Bleed generation Another major enhancement is the Add Bleed Action, which allows bleed to be generated even if none exists in the original file. Bailes-Collins explains: “Lack of bleed in supplied PDF files is still a major issue for our customers. Previous versions of PitStop displayed bleed if it was available and could automatically extend rectangular shapes to create bleed if none existed. Users could also manually manipulate a PDF to extend bleed if the file design allowed it. The new version is a leap forward, as it works by mirroring the individual objects that are close to or cross a PDF box to create bleed. These mirrored objects are also completely editable so the resulting bleed can also be adjusted manually if necessary, which we believe is unique in the world of preflighting. Bleed can be generated for single or multiple objects, as well as complete pages or documents, significantly streamlining workflow in the production process.”
Customisable Preflight Messages Based upon PitStop users’ request, the ability to customise the warning and error messages in the PitStop Preflight reports has been added as an important new. In PitStop 13, messages can be customised to reflect
non-technical language that can include suggestions for corrections if necessary. In addition, the preflight messages can be translated into languages that are not currently supported by the PitStop application. Other enhancements include: • PitStop Server CLI now has the ability to convert PDF files to images and outputs PNG and JPEG files – ideal for repurposing PDF files or for thumbnail images of PDF files. • The ability to create and edit Action Lists directly in PitStop Server. This is a huge benefit to PitStop Server users as previously Action Lists needed to be exported to PitStop Pro for editing and then re-imported into PitStop Server. • A new PitStop configurator – PDF2Image – is installed with PitStop Server, allowing PitStop Server customers with Enfocus Switch (Automation Solution) to create JPEG and PNG images from PDF files. Image output also works with the new ‘restrictions’ concept so only certain selected elements of the PDF can be converted to an image if required. • The Workgroup Manager application for PitStop Pro Floating Licenses gains
•
several new options and now also uses a ‘push’ mechanism to reduce the amount of network traffic and improve communication between PitStop Pro and the Workgroup Manager server. The PitStop 13 release includes new Actions and Action Lists with new and enhanced functionality.
PitStop Pro 13 available with option of subscription licensing Subscription licensing models are becoming popular within the design, print and publishing industries. Enfocus has had positive feedback from more than 2,000 customers regarding this type of licensing model, and as a result Enfocus is pleased to announce that subscription licensing is now a new option users can consider when purchasing PitStop Pro 13. A single monthly subscription for PitStop Pro will cost €30 per month, or €25 per month with an annual prepaid contract at €300 whereas a perpetual license cost €699. The option for subscription licensing will be available when PitStop 13 is released in April 2015. PitStop 13 grace period begins 2nd February 2015. Users purchasing or upgrading to PitStop 12 from the 2nd of February 2015 will automatically be entitled to PitStop 13 free-ofcharge when the new version is available.

J C Graphics installs Andhra’s first Vijayawada’s J C Graphics has installed Heidelberg Speedmaster CD 102 six-colour press with UV Coater, a first-of-its-kind in Andhra Pradesh From printing Cinema posters, J C Graphics has come a long way. The Vijayawada-based print house recently enhanced its portfolio with a brand new, six-colour Heidelberg Speedmaster CD 102 with UV Coater. This is the first-of-its-kind installation in Andhra Pradesh.
Referred to as the ‘allrounder’, Heidelberg’s Speedmaster CD 102 is the best seller in the 70 × 100 format press series. The press is an excellent Return on Investment (ROI) in a very short time, because of its stable print quality throughout the run, ease of use, efficiency and outstanding productivity.
Founded in 1977 by Chairman Mr. Ratnakar Hegde, J C Graphics kick-started its business by printing Cinema posters and later expanding into the packaging segment. The recent acquisition of Heidelberg Speedmaster CD 102 adds to the stateof-the-art prepress, press and postpress equipments housed by the three-decade old print shop. “The Heidelberg Speedmaster CD 102 installation is a dream come true for us,” says Karunakar, Managing director and current-generation entrepreneur of J C Graphics. His brother Dinakar, who is the Director of the firm, nods in agreement, “The Speedmaster CD 102 is a blessing in terms of productivity, speed, and efficiency. The after-sales experience with Heidelberg is outstanding.” “When, we decided to go for brand new equipment, Heidelberg was our first and natural choice. The Speedmaster CD 102 is a perfect fit to our requirements. Our first impression of the press at an open house in India was remarkable. Later, a visit to
the Heidelberg factory in Germany further reaffirmed our expectations,” he adds.

The press is an excellent Return on Investment (ROI) in a very short time, because of its stable print quality throughout the run, ease of use, efficiency and outstanding productivity. Commenting on the recent installation, Saseendran Baskaran, Product Manager – Press Solutions, Heidelberg India, says, “The Speedmaster CD 102 is an apt choice for packaging printers in India, as it can process an array of substrates from 0.03 millimeter paper to 1 mm thick cardboard. The AutoPlate feature paves way for fast plate changes and short makeready times, while an ‘Air Transfer System’ facilitates contact-free sheet travel. A high capacity inking unit ensures stable inking throughout the run.” JC Graphics being a hardcore packaging printer, most of its print jobs requires coating. The unique UV coating unit of the Speedmaster CD 102 is fitted with a chambered blade system to meet the most exacting print-quality and coating requirements, rendering it ideal for the printing needs of the firm. Speedmaster CD 102 is also highly energyefficient, slicing energy consumption costs significantly. Looking ahead, J C Graphics plans to phase out some old machines in its printing, die-cutting, Lamination and Gluing departments, with New-Gen replacements. The Speedmaster CD 102 experience has
transformed Karunakar and Dinakar into Heidelberg enthusiasts. “A great press at great value,” quips Karunakar. “Thanks to the Speedmaster CD 102, our business is booming with increased volumes. A recent print job on MetPet film cartons using the CD 102 was highly appreciated by our clients,” he notes. JC Graphics is
also initiating an effort to obtain the ISO 12647-2 certification, and is now closely working with the Heidelberg team to achieve the ISO standards. Post-approval, JC Graphics will become the first print shop in Andhra Pradesh to be awarded the ISO standardization. Dinakar is more than impressed with the after-sales support from Heidelberg India. “Heidelberg has been very supportive in training our operators. “Investing in a Canon ImagePress C800 series of production printer wasn’t much difficult for me,” remarks Dinesh. “I have worked for years with Canon and the choice was natural. I have a long list of clientele with names like BHEL, UPSRTC and Terai Development Corporation to name a few. Since I run my business as a social enterprise rather than a mere profit generating unit, I felt it to be right to go for colour even though I am a young man of 65,” he beams. Dinesh believes that the demand for coloured prints in the area stands at about 9 lakh copies per month and he sees a good opportunity in this segment. “We have a target of increasing the market share to about 20% of the total coloured prints here in six months. I presume it to be a good start,” he asserts. Talking about the choice to take in Canon as the first choice for his new venture, he says “I have been a very satisfied client with the 700 Canon A4 black and white printers installed at the corporate. Moreover, I have a Canon camera and Canon press was a natural progression. In fact, I never looked at any other digital press as an option.” In addition to the newly added Canon machine, Dinesh also has two Konica Minolta machines. Currently 15 people work for Crest. The new Canon machine is supposed to print magazines covers of about 8 magazines that Dinesh has in hand and he is clear in his approach to cater to the printing needs in the retail market as well. For this, he has his unit which is centrally placed in the posh commercial area of Hazratganj in Lucknow. According to him the Canon machine is the best machine for people who plan to enter into the digital printing business since it is a real ‘value for money’.

New White Paper: Landa Digital Printing redefines Press Operator User Experience (UX) Landa has released a new white paper, “The Landa UX: Revolutionizing the Press Operator User Experience for Breakthrough Productivity”, that explains why user experience (UX) has become such an important consideration for many industriesincluding print. The paper explores how Landa has incorporated the latest 21st century UX design and touchscreen technology into its Landa S10 Nanographic Printing Presses in order to meet the needs of the market and deliver unparalleled press operator efficiencies and productivity. While touchscreen technology and UX innovation has come a long way in other industries, such as automotive, healthcare and financial services, the printing press room experience has remained largely unchanged for many years. Engaging with hundreds of press operators, Landa undertook considerable research and used its learnings to redesign a new UX from the ground up. The objective was to radically improve current workflow and operator habits to help ensure print’s continued relevant and profitable role within the marketing mix. The new white paper details how the Landa S10 press incorporates latest market leading UX technology and expertise - delivering for the first time, an extremely humancentric approach to printing. It explains
how Landa presses are managed from a central command and control area called the “Landa Operator Cockpit” that features a large touchscreen display, positioned at a 45-degree angle to the delivery end of the press. Like never before, this allows operators to be within easy reach of all press controls and output trays. Using an offset press requires the full attention of the press operator and forces him to stand next to the press delivery during the entire production period. In contrast, the Landa S10 offers a new operation concept with a superior user experience. The Landa Operator Cockpit enables the operator to be significantly more effective, performing additional tasks such as inspecting print output, monitoring press functions, managing
the job list, and more-in parallel to managing production, all without compromising on productivity and print quality. Gilad Tzori, Landa’s Vice President of Product Strategy, explains, “Many industries revolutionized their user experience and put the user in the center and made the user experience more enjoyable, improving the end results and reducing faults. Airplanes, cars, and cameras are all great examples of this revolution. We hope that by reading the white paper, you will gain insight into how Landa has used advanced technologies in the Landa S10 Nanographic Printing® Press to deliver a truly outstanding, more productive user experience.”

digitally automated: a digital camera present on each print unit, named Print Tutor, “reads” the print quality and substitutes the eyes of the operator, while 7 servo-motors substitute the fingers of the operator, digitally adjusting the print pressures and the register. This advanced technology provides consistent quality with shorter lead times.
Adare collaborates with organizations and leverages their core competences in order to provide end-toend design and packaging solutions that protect and promote customer’s products and services and enhance their Brands.
A digital press as the natural progression

Adare’s mission is mainly focused around one concept: to push flexography beyond its current limitations and challenge digital as the main short run package print technology. Therefore they have been looking for the kind of technology that perfectly fitted their requirements. The partnership with GIDUE officially started in 2012 when, thanks to the cooperation of GIDUE certified distributor in UK Global Print Service Ltd, they first approached to Digital Flexo technology. GIDUE Digital Flexo is an integrated system of revolutionary “digitised” technologies for the production of Labels and Packaging at the lowest operating costs and with the highest sustainability. It allows all press operations set up, production and quality control to be performed with no need for manual intervention from the operator, since every operation is fully
Adare in the past had already put in place a digital workflow and had automated most of the pre-press tasks, but, by that way, a digital press seemed the natural progression for the medium runs and not for both short and long runs. So, when they approached GIDUE Digital Flexo Technology, they immediately understood that it perfectly fitted their needs and especially the theory that it is possible to print by numbers. Investing in the GIDUE M5 Digital Flexo press 530 mm width and 8 colours, meant that most of the press settings were digitised resulting in consistent performance. “For Adare, Digital Flexo is not just a machine, but a process, and the High Definition is now standard practice on our site. With Digital Flexo HD quality we can rival gravure and litho, and we are only starting – this will get even better,” said Mr. David Mills, Managing Director at Adare.
Another GIDUE for flexible packaging market After the successful results achieved with the installation of the first M5 Digital Flexo press, Adare then decided to enter the flexible packaging market and invest in another GIDUE printing machine, a M5 Digital Flexo press 630mm width and 8 printing stations for Flexible Packaging. The fully servo driven press has excellent registration which allowed Adare

“GIDUE’s Digital Flexo Technology in combination with REVO Technology represents a revolutionary change for the market, similar to that of digital printing,” quoted Daragh Whelan. Adare’s decision of investing in REVO technology is strictly linked to the new project related to Flexible Packaging, where the GIDUE M5 press is well recommended in order to provide high quality flexible packaging for short runs.

to implement it with the REVO technology. Adare plays an important role as partner in REVO project, which collects 8 industry leaders (AVT, Adare, Apex Group of Companies, Dupont, Esko, Flint Group, GIDUE and UPM Raflatac) that gathered to launch a complete UV Flexo package that allows conventional print to fight back against digital on short runs. REVO Technology uses UV Flexo Inks, Digital Automation “from
pre-press to printing process” and extended colour gamut, that allows the achievement of repeatable and predictable PMS shades without changing Anilox and Inks. The most important benefits of REVO Technology are the repeatability and predictability of the printing results, short set-up times, less waste, total graphic flexibility to reproduce unlimited colours on the same job and fast change-overs that do not need any manual intervention from the operator.
“Our client focused investments have enabled us to provide cost effective short to medium run flexible packaging, at exceptional print quality to rival the gravure process. Having a fully automated press allowed Adare to integrate a solvent-less laminator inline to reduce our lead times for flexible packaging. Our customers can also see the finished laminated product at press pass stage. With a state of the art studio and HD plate making in house we have produced new laminated flexible packaging products within a few days of receiving the new artwork,” concluded Daragh Whelan.

‘The concept of managing a ‘thin company’ is about identifying the bottlenecks within one’s company to find and employ better solutions, and run the business more smoothly – both at a production and administrative level,’ says Dana Kilarska.
‘When the FINAT Young Managers Club was founded in 2008 on the occasion of FINAT’s 50th anniversary, the aim was to create a platform where incoming business leaders could connect FINAT’s successful past with a dynamic future. Now, six year later, the YMC itself has become an established feature of our association’s structure. Nevertheless it is still refreshing to experience the continuing stream of the YMC’s high-quality, interactive, and business-oriented programmes, which are setting new standards in FINAT,’ concludes Jules Lejeune, Managing Director, FINAT.

The CFL605RT is designed to support immediate finishing of packaging and prototypes with multiple functions. “There is growing demand for on-demand production of prototypes and small lots, both for products and their packaging,” explains Mike Horsten, General Manager Marketing EMEA at Mimaki Europe. “This includes fast, efficient prototyping and production of samples as well as small lots of products and packaging that may be modified to reflect different seasonal and regional requirements. There are promotional and special event opportunities, too. In particular, we believe markets such as cosmetics and luxury items will benefit from the ability to produce highly responsive eye-catching packaging with short lead times. Our solutions are specifically designed to meet that need, and we are excited to witness the impact we believe they will have on the market as brand owners and converters alike learn about their many benefits.” The newest addition to Mimaki’s family of cutting plotters, the CFL-605RT, is a multifunction flatbed plotter that
accommodates material sizes up to A2 extra and features a variety of functions including creasing and eccentric, tangential and reciprocating cutting. Used in combination with the UJF-6042, the new compact flatbed cutting plotter can achieve on-demand production of the original goods by providing the whole production process, including
printing onto goods and packages, and cutting of cushioning materials. •

•
The eccentric cutter has a maximum cutting thickness of 1 mm with an optimal downforce setting between 30 and 1,000 g. The tangential cutter features a maximum cutting thickness of 2 mm with high downforce pressure, including materials such as reflective vinyl and rubber sheets. The reciprocating cutter has a maximum 10 mm cutting thickness for materials such as foam or cardboard and uses a vertical reciprocating motion. The creasing roller creases materials for a perfect package. Downforce pressures are adjustable from 500 to 1,000 g.
Horsten adds, “We are also developing a complete end-to-end solution that will not only reduce the time required for prototyping and small lot production, but will also significantly reduce costs and enable a faster time to market. In many cases, these functions can be performed in-house, eliminating outsourcing and further reducing cycle time. These latest portfolio additions are an outstanding example of our mantra of ‘Let’s Create… Together!’ coming to life.”

Flint Group Distributor Symposium 2014: Passion for Technology Information on global market trends and the latest flexo technologies About 80 visitors came to Flint Group Flexographic Products’ distributor symposium, which took place according to the motto “Passion for Technology” on 3 and 4 December 2014, in Stuttgart. Day 1 of the conference was dedicated to automation. During a live demo in the Flint Group technology centre, participants could catch up on the benefits of the new nyloflex® Automated Plate Processor (APP). This fully automated processing line with premium equipment, as well as outstanding productivity and consistency, includes a washer, dryer and light finisher. The efficient automation and advanced level of standardisation leads to a significant reduction of the total processing time of more than 35%, compared with stand alone devices. In terms of standardisation, automation is a big step forward, which enables the minimisation of process tolerances. At the same time, mistakes can be reduced with the result of a lower complaint rate and reduced costs. The user friendly handling enables an easy control of all operations. For the presentations of the second day, meeting rooms in the exclusive Porsche Museum in Stuttgart were used, providing a fantastic location that truly reflected Flint Group’s sophisticated motto. Aryan Moelker, the new President of Flint Group Flexographic Products, took the opportunity to introduce himself to the distributors and to give an overview on the latest developments in the company. Also, great interest was raised with the presentation from Markus Bauschulte, Technical Sales Director, Windmoeller & Hoelscher KG on global market trends and technologies in flexo and gravure printing, as well as a presentation from Bernd Sanning, Head of Service & Innovation at Flexicon AG, on print qualification programmes of brand owners. In addition, experts from Flint Group Flexographic Products informed the audience on new developments with rotec® sleeves and adapters, the flexo toolbox app and the recently introduced partner platform on the internet site. An update on flat top dot technologies and the nyloflex® NExT

technology for corrugated was given. This exposure technology utilises a high intensity UV-A LED light source to conduct rapid crosslinking of the photopolymer surface before oxygen inhibition can occur, resulting in a virtual 1:1 image reproduction from the digital file to the finished plate. In flexible packaging, printing plates exposed with this technology allow excellent ink transfer, particularly in solids. Especially in corrugated printing, fluting will considerably be reduced. Visitors were also very interested in the lecture on the nyloflex® NEF Digital printing plate, which has been specifically designed for the efficient creation of flat top dots and the excellent reproduction of surface screenings. The printing plate, which was introduced in August 2014, shows an outstanding quality in the highlight areas. It allows for a reduced bump-up, hence increasing the image contrast. The ink laydown can be significantly improved and a high solid ink density can be achieved when surface screens are applied. The result is a
brilliant print performance on film, foil and coated paper substrates. Compared with conventional plates, exposure times are considerably shorter. The event was completed by a guided tour through the Porsche Museum, where legendary racings sports cars, fascinating production models and unusual prototypes were presented.

Novurania by Aarushi: The right blankets for your Printing Novurania invests a significant amount of its resources in R&D, and the company works closely with the industry’s major chemical suppliers and press manufacturers to ensure it can provide the right solutions for today’s presses and those being developed for the future. The technology involved in the creation of a successful blanket has never been more complex. A blanket has to provide consistent dot reproduction, with good ink transfer on to a wide variety of stock, plus durability and resistance to smashes. Customers expect high quality print almost as a right and this requires the correct blanket on the press, fitted and packed accurately, plus sound technical after-sales support – something that is often lacking from many blanket suppliers. The Italian company Novurania and in association with Aarushi Agencies Ltd based in India is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of offset and coating blankets for the graphic arts industry. With its NTR series, it provides the widest range of solutions available today for packaging and coating products.
Novurania have recently introduced in India its latest blankets to its packaging range. The NTR150 and the NTR156 to its UV range, a cast coated and a buffed blanket. These two blankets have a completely new face compound moving away from the traditional compounds such as EPDM. These blankets are now widely used in Europe and the USA and are giving outstanding results. Apart from the two new UV blankets, Novurania has introduced two new conventional blankets the NTR305 and the NTR106. Both blankets have been designed to use on a large range of paper and board with exceptional release characteristics. The demands placed upon offset blankets become greater every year, with wider and faster presses, new chemicals, the growth of automatic blanket cleaning systems plus environmental issues all having an impact on what printers expect. Presses have become much more sophisticated in the number of processes they handle in-line, while at the same time everyone is looking to reduce their energy consumption and waste. The blanket plays a vital role in all of these areas.
Novurania provides customers with expert advice on choosing the right blanket for the job and ensures right technical aftersales support for optimum productivity from their presses. This includes on-site trials and testing at customers’ premises, plus troubleshooting support and staff training. Novurania is represented in India by Aarushi Agencies. Novurania supplies a comprehensive selection of innovative blanket solutions for printing, including, blankets for UV applications as well as a wide range conventional blankets. The exclusive rubber compounds used for closed cells compressible layer of these blankets ensures high smash resistance and excellent print quality. The blanket carcass allows adjustments to be made to the paper feed, according to printing press requirements, while the blanket’s top surface is microbuffed to achieve good paper release and print reproduction. Novurania blankets have been designed to reduce waste. The high quality fabrics used at every stage of the blanket’s construction ensure water solvent protection and excellent stability.
Invercote upgrade – an adaptation to market demands Iggesund Paperboard announces an upgrade to its flagship product, Invercote. From summer 2015 the bestselling paperboard in the Invercote family, Invercote G, will feature a lightly coated reverse side. “More and more brand owners want to have access to high-quality reverse side printing, for example in order to print a colour shade or pattern which improves recognition and reinforces their brand,” comments Arvid Sundblad, Vice President Sales and Marketing at Iggesund Paperboard. “We are developing Invercote step by step, and always in the direction our customers want.”
material has been the high predictability of the end result. Coating the reverse side means that the whiteness on the reverse has also been adjusted up. Further improvement has also been made to the lightfastness, which was already the best on the market, and which is crucial for a package to keep looking fresh over time on the retail shelf. “This is not a revolution but rather an adaptation to gradually changing customer demands. The reverse side coating is very light – it improves the printing properties, but still keeps the tactile feeling of roughness,”
Prior to this latest upgrade, Invercote G has been triple-coated on the print side with an uncoated reverse and is available in grammages from 180 to 380 g/m2. Over the years it has come to be the quality leader, primarily due to the combination of excellent printing and foil laminating properties together with high quality and an equally high quality consistency. One of the many reasons to choose it as a graphic or packaging
Sundblad continues. “But in making this change we have also preserved all the other properties that have repeatedly led to Invercote being ranked by leading brand owners as the European paperboard market’s strongest brand.” Concurrently with the introduction of the upgraded Invercote G, Iggesund has also improved and made more transparent its service offering under the name Care by Iggesund. The aim is consistent delivery times but the offering also encompasses everything from a rapid sample service and the dissemination of knowledge to local technical support and a transparent raw materials supply. “It’s crucial to us that anyone who chooses Invercote will not only sleep well at night but also know that the end result will be dazzling,” Sundblad concludes. Specifications for the upgraded Invercote G as well as sample and trial material will be available from early February. Deliveries will start July 1st.

Seeing is believing: See your design in 3D before you manufacture it at In-Store Asia At In-Store Asia, Mumbai 2015, Esko will showcase its real time 3D Studio Store Visualizer aimed at visual merchandisers and brand owners. The global supplier of integrated solutions for the production of packaging, labels, signage and displays will exhibit at the In-Store Asia which will take place in Bombay Exhibition Centre, Mumbai during February 5-7, 2015. In-Store Asia is India’s largest retail design and solutions event for global and Indian retail business leaders and professionals. In-Store Asia Expo attracts architects and retail design firms, visual merchandisers, in-store branding specialists, POP, signage and store fixture suppliers, material and lighting solution providers and suppliers of advanced printing and graphics equipment and solutions. In-Store Asia Expo contains a Designer Pavilion and for the first time, this year it will also feature a material lounge. Esko will showcase its real time 3D Studio Store Visualizer aimed at visual merchandisers and brand owners. It is in the store that a product needs to communicate the brand and attract customers. So, what better way to predict the success of a new design than to visualize it in a store environment, next to its competition? Studio Store Visualizer does exactly that. Esko’s real-time virtual reality technology can visualize new and existing products in a store. With these visuals, all the stakeholders can assess the shelf of a product and its packaging appeal upfront. They can make the right design decisions upfront on colour, shape, materials, artwork and shelf layout. The real-time rendering reaches an unmatched level of reality. It is all in the
details: the shadows at the back of the shelves, the small randomness when placing products on the shelf, the many materials and print effects. The animation and physics of the product and packs add even more realism. Walk through the isles, pick up items, see them on the shelf, see what happens when they fall off the shelf and even, bump into each other. The virtual products are made with Studio or ArtiosCAD. So they link straight into your design or manufacturing data. And you can very quickly swap them with different variations. Store Visualizer can also import 3D objects from many other modeling tools or 3D scanning devices. While standard store and supermarket 3D templates are supplied,
it is also possible to digitize your own retail shops and see where to best place your own product packs in a familiar environments. So get ready and bring your 3D glasses with you when you visit Esko’s stand at the In-Store Expo in Mumbai. Visit Esko at In-Store Asia, Mumbai (Booth B4, Hall 6)

Lijnco places seventh order for Q.I. Press Controls solution Printing specialist Lijnco, based in Groningen, the Netherlands – one of Q.I. Press Controls oldest customers – is to invest in mRC-3D. In so doing, Lijnco is placing its seventh order and proves once again its value as a loyal and satisfied customer. As a communications provider, Lijnco uses a diversity of communication channels. For physical forms of communication, Lijnco produces high-quality printed matter for an extensive array of clients. Additionally, the company also produces stickers, labels, security documents, logistics documents, tickets and all sorts of other printed matter geared to the needs of its customers. According to Anne Werkman, project manager at Lijnco, in order to maintain levels of profitability in printed matter in the future, it’s essential to invest in process control: “Effective register control helps reduce setup times and use of set-up material. What’s more, the quality of the register is much better. These are aspects, which – from a financial and environmental point of view – are major improvements. Our previous experience with Q.I. Press Controls and the price-quality ratio of their solutions means that we have once again opted to acquire a Q.I. Press Controls system.” The mRC-3D will replace the existing IRS which has had a proven track record over the last 16 years. The upgrade consists of an automatic colour register, including front to back and perforation register. The cameras
are positioned on a Müller Martini narrowweb offset-rotation press consisting of nine printing units. With the upgrade to the mRC-3D, Lijnco expects that the quality of its products will continue to meet standards of high quality. In fact, with the addition of the automatic perforation register, it will more than exceed them. “It’s a win-win situation,” explains Werkman. “We expect improved performance in terms of efficiency and reduced consumption of materials. Another sideeffect of having a reliable system in place will be the increased confidence in the printing presses on the part of operators.” With this order, Menno Jansen, managing director of Q.I. Press Controls, aims to show that Q.I. Press Controls’ solutions are suitable for any kind of printing press. “In the past we may have had a name in the coldset and heatset business, but with clients such as Lijnco we are able to show that our systems can also be used on narrow-web presses. The fact that Lijnco has once again plumped for our solution is a reflection of this evident satisfaction.”
“When it comes to giving support to modern printing companies such as Lijnco,” Werkman adds, “the people at Q.I. Press Controls know what it’s all about. Offset will remain part of our work where we can be of assistance to clients. The effective solutions and service that Q.I. Press Controls offer, helps us retain a competitive position in the marketplace.”

New CombiWhite C3 improves printer safety Flint Group Narrow Web has introduced an upgraded version of CombiWhite – the easy over-printable opaque white rotary screen ink widely used in beverage, health and beauty, and no-label-look applications. “A classification and labelling change led by REACH resulted in Flint Group, as a responsible supplier, deciding we could no longer use N-vinyl caprolactam (NVC, CAS number 2235-00-9), in any of our products,” claims Global Product Director, Jennifer Joyce. She continues, “While EuPia have initiated a prolonged substation process until March 2015, we are pleased to announce we are ready with re-formulation work and have had fifteen clients using the new product for well over 5 months; furthermore, we have not had one single negative report from any of these tests. We are very pleased with the results.” CombiWhite C3 is designed specifically for combination printing with all narrow web ink technologies and can be used on all types of substrates. Printers will experience perfect combination print results with virtually any print process such as UV flexo, UV offset, UV letterpress, UV screen, or water-based flexo.
Product Manager, Mr Par Olsson has this to say, “The whole aim with this reformulation is that no one should notice any difference between existing formulations and the new, upgraded, CombiWhite C3. It is one of those few cases where you are happy to hear there is no difference between the new product and the previous one.” Flint Group identified fifteen performance attributes important for all types of combination printing with screen white inks. The top rated 5 are: opacity, flow-out (pinhole free), adhesion, printability of overprinting ink, and cross hatch resistance. Mr. Olsson continues, “When formulating an opaque white screen ink, one is really trying to combine some extreme, almost conflicting, print proprieties. The ink should be capable of performing at high speeds with free flow, no pinholes in solids, and with extreme sharp text; at the same time it should be easy to overprint. It is, indeed, a demanding product to master.” Mr. Olsson concludes by saying, “We have several clients using CombiWhite C3 on no-label look for beverage labels as well as
cosmetic labels. These end applications do possess slightly different challenges but, through our formulation expertise and in-house print testing capabilities, we have managed to optimise press performance with the most stringent end use demands.” “We were approached early in the testing process,” states Mr. Jean -François Clisson at APE Etiquettes, France. “We understand fully the aspect of printer safety, and care for our staff. But safe products should still provide superior performance attributes. We have been running the new CombiWhite C3 under an experimental code for well over 3 months and we see not a single defect; in fact, we believe flow-out has slightly improved. For us this is an easy switch and win-win for all involved.” Initially, CombiWhite C3 will be commercialised in Europe. It will be available in the same sets of press ready products optimised for no-label look applications that were previously available. New products are subject to a product code change: • USW90005 replaces USW90001 • USW90006 replaces USW90003.
BASF plans worldwide expansion of PVP production BASF plans to invest up to €56 million in the expansion of its Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) value chain over the next four years. PVP is a polymer which is used in diverse industries, for example the pharmaceutical or the personal and home care sector, mainly due to its binding properties. Through revamping existing plants in Ludwigshafen, Germany and Geismar, Louisiana and introducing the PVP technology at BASF’s site in Shanghai, China, the company will increase its global PVP production capacities by up to 6,000 metric tons. All plants will operate under the highest possible quality standards (current Good Manufacturing Practice). BASF is the inventor and one of the market leaders for PVP. “Our global production network and technology leadership enable us to obtain the highest levels of supply reliability and quality for our customers in multiple industries,” said Michael Heinz, Member
of the Board of Executive Directors, BASF SE. “With this investment we are actively participating in the strongly growing PVP market, especially within the pharmaceutical industry,” added Saori Dubourg, President of BASF’s Nutrition & Health division. The polymer PVP can be used in a broad range of applications due to its varied features: It is water soluble, but can also absorb large quantities of water; it is nonirritant to the skin and does not pose a health hazard; it is temperature-resistant, pH-stable, non-ionic and colorless. A majority of BASF’s PVP capacities are destined for the pharmaceutical industry. Under the name Kollidon, PVP is mainly used as an excipient in tablets with binding and disintegrant functionality. As a binder, it enables the individual active ingredients of a tablet to form a homogenous entity and as a disintegrant it ensures that the tablets break up in liquid and release the active ingredient
quickly. The excipient can furthermore be deployed as lyophilisation agent, suspension stabilizer and thickener. In addition to the pharmaceutical industry, PVP-based products are used in the cosmetic, detergent and food sector as well as for technical applications. Luviskol types are key components in hair styling products to give, for example, styling sprays and gels their setting properties. Sokalan types are detergent additives, which disperse particulate soil removed from the fibers during the washing process and prevent it from being redeposited on clean fabrics. With regard to the food sector, PVP can be used for the filtration of beer and the treatment of wine (Divergan). Luvitec plays an essential role, for example, in the production of membranes for micro- and ultra-filtration, which are employed for dialysis and water filtration. It can also be utilized for special adhesives.

Six months with Esko Kongsberg scores high for Parkar Parkar Communications reaps huge benefits within six months of installing a Kongsberg XN along with ArtiosCAD 3D and i-cut Suite from Esko.
“We had an impression that extensive training would be needed to operate the Esko software. On the contrary, it turned out to be very easy software to handle. The proof is that one of our staff who was part of our labour department is currently operating the system.” – Mahesh Parkar.
Parkar Communications Private Limited is a one-stop shop for on-the- ground marketing communication in Mumbai. Design, product development, offset and digital print, signage, POP, events, and corporate film production – from concept to execution on the ground, Parkar’s signage and POP solutions for brands such as P&G, Gillette, Cadbury, Onida, and Mahanagar Gas are visible throughout Mumbai’s stores and malls around the country. Six months ago, the company installed an Esko Kongsberg XN cutting and creasing table with Esko’s ArtiosCAD 3D and i-cut Suite software at its Andheri East plant.
material and optimizes production by determining the most accurate and efficient cutting path. Parkar says it was very easy to train his staff to use ArtiosCAD 3D and i-cut Suite effectively. “We had an impression that extensive training would be needed to operate the Esko software. On the contrary, it turned out to be very easy software to handle. Yes, it would take some time to become an expert but one can be trained for basic operations in a very short time. The proof is that one of our staff who was part of our labour department is currently operating the system,” Parkar states.
Till the company installed the Kongsberg XN about six months back, PCPL was totally dependent on manual labour for executing its signage and POP projects, engaging almost a dozen persons in that department. That count is now down to just one. “It was all manual cutting and involved quite a bit of labour management. Also, the cost of blades and cutters were a big expense. And we could not get the desired quality. That led us to Esko,” says Mahesh Parkar, Managing Director of PCPL. Parkar adds that earlier, manually cutting an 8-foot by 4-foot sheet took close to 45 minutes. With the Esko Kongsberg XN, that time is down to only 6 to 8 minutes. “The Kongsberg XN cutting table not only helps us save on labour, but it also allows us to reduce the material costs; which is in fact a huge saving,” stated Parker.
Shrihari Rao, who leads Esko’s sales team in India, says that he was really impressed that Mr. Parkar’s decision “was based purely on versatility and throughput – ‘On how quickly can I offer accurately finished products to a variety of demands and opportunities in the market.’ Whether it’s short or long jobs, or prototypes — the Kongsberg tables

Apart from cost savings, Kongsberg has provided the company the necessary confidence to take on all kinds of jobs. Earlier PCPL would cut only certain types of materials and outsource the rest. This has now changed. “We are now cutting materials which we were outsourcing to a third party. Earlier we were not sure if we could do justice to clients where certain materials were involved. We would either not take that work, or we were compelled to outsource it. After installing the Kongsberg XN our reliance on third parties is over and our commitment levels have increased,” Parkar says. Esko’s Artios Cad allows PCPL to create its POP designs from scratch in 3D and send them directly to the cutting table, while i-cut’s preflight checks the PDF files coming in and makes sure the files will RIP and print and cut correctly. The i-cut suite also saves Mahesh Parkar, Managing Director of Parkar Communications Pvt. Ltd with the Kongsberg XN table at Parkar’s plant in Andheri East.

offer quick throughput because they require very little setup time. There are equipment manufacturers who claim they can produce hundreds of pieces an hour, but take hours to set up and that is inefficient. Absolute Market leadership in India with almost 100 installs and local support by factory trained engineers from our Bangalore and Mumbai
offices added to the decision making.”
Huge boost in business With significant savings across the board, and a rise in productivity and improved consistency in quality, PCPL has seen a major boost in its signage and POP business. “In the last six months our
business in POP and signage segment has seen a growth of close to 50%. This is because of the rise in our capacity and our confidence in taking on a variety of work. However, this is just a start and we still have sufficient capacity in the signage segment to see a further growth of another 50%,” concludes Parkar.

With Automation Engine, all of these functions are automated in a single workflow, with less operator intervention. In a more commoditized market, signs and display shops are also realizing that unique 3D display projects offer higher margins. More and more companies are investing in ArtiosCAD for structural design. ArtiosCAD has an extensive library of resizable display designs to help designers so they do not have to start from scratch designing new displays. Mr. Shrihari Rao, Sales Director of Esko South Asia states, “The versatility that Esko’s digital finishing solution offers with i-cut Suite and ArtiosCAD software alongside the Kongsberg XN series is exactly what the growing Retail and Signage market in India needs. The signs and display markets are growing very fast in India. Customers understand that they cannot work manually any more. They are looking to digitize the whole workflow. They invest in the right printers, latest software, finishing machines and materials. Investing in is Kongsberg cutting table is a natural choice: quality and on-time delivery are the key to success.” Esko has invested in the digital finishing excellence centre with equipment and trained staff and has nearly 60 installations in South Asia addressing various applications.

David likes money. He recognized that as you evolve to stay ahead of competition in an industry with tight margins, uptime and efficiency are essential. The Kodak Achieve Platesetter produces consistent, high-quality materials. It was easy to install, and the price was a welcome surprise. He combined this affordable productivity with Kodak Sonora XP Process Free Plates which have the run lengths, imaging speed, and print capability of processed plates, letting him deliver the high-quality print his customers expect, but without the waste and hassle of traditional plate processing. David made the shift to process free and all the money he used to spend on plate processing is now going straight into his pockets. Learn more at kodak.com/go/sonora
