FROM THE EDITORS’ DESK Dear Readers, PUR is all but indispensable for high-quality softcover products today, which is why perfect binding lines set up for hotmelt are often retrofitted with PUR, just like the Pantera from Muller Martini at Südostschweiz Presse und Print AG in the Swiss city of Chur. Read on the story – ‘Increase added value with PUR extension: The indispensability of PUR in premium softcover products’. drupa 2016 is cooperation partner of the 5th Media Mundo congress on 17 and 18 November in Düsseldorf. As in 2011 and 2012, drupa will act as cooperation partner of the 5th Media Mundo congress. This year, the congress will focus on the motto “rethink sustainability – economic motivation for sustainable media production”. The details can be found in the report titled – Teamwork drupa and Media Mundo. Some 96 visitors representing 59 companies from 17 countries participated in the Packaging Open House which was mainly held for overseas customers of Komori. The LITHRONE GX40 (GLX-640+C)/ LITHRONE GX40RP (GLX-840RP) Packaging Open House was held on June 12, 2014, at Komori Corporation’s Tsukuba Plant. The event provided information to users interested in or considering a Lithrone GX40 or Lithrone GX40RP packaging press. For the German manufacturer, manroland web systems, it is clear that digital printing will become increasingly important for newspapers, advertising, and books. This is why print media of the future will need digital solutions for postpress. Dieter Betzmeier, Vice President Technology and Project Execution at manroland web systems addresses how the company plans to cater to these requirements in our article – Digital printing strengthens the future outlook of all media. Also in the newspaper section is the Tamil-language newspaper, Daily Thanthi which has cut time to register by 20% and 10% waste reduction following the installation of QuadTech’s Register Guidance and Ribbon Control systems with MultiCam. The resulting improved print quality is contributing to increased circulation and readership as well. The important newspapers and publishing even, WAN-IFRA India 2014 Conference is the upcoming twenty second annual event of WANIFRA for South Asian publishers. The event is largely awaited by the industry to take place on 17-18 September at Le Meridien, Delhi. It has a lot in store for all involved. KODAK’s new NEXPRESS VII Front End offers configurable solution for breadth of market needs. The new Front End has been introduced with System 15.1 Software. Built on open standards, it allows an operation to expand in processing power as production needs in image and data intensity grow in parallel. Also Konica Minolta has introduced its latest Production Printing Machine bizhub PRESS C1070/C1060 targeting print providers that demand greater quality, productivity and scalability. The new introductions by Vinsak are LIO350 Intermittent Offset Shaftless Press and LFD350 Flatbed Die Cutter. In the large format arena, HP has introduced a few new products under the Designjet banner and also announced the new Latex 300 Printer series. There are many more important events covered in the July Issue of PRESSIdeas like, Xerox celebrating 75 years of Xerography. Also of interest should be – The new Definition of ‘Labels’ – addressed by FINAT members. Enjoy Reading!

“The issue of green printing and sustainability across the entire process chain will be one of the focal points of drupa 2016. Drupa will renew its long-term cooperation with the Media Mundo industrial action group. As in 2011 and 2012, drupa will act as cooperation partner of the 5th Media Mundo congress on the 17 November (Discussion on the evening before the event) and on 18 November, 2014 (all day) in Düsseldorf. This year, the congress will focus on the motto “rethink sustainability – economic motivation for sustainable media production”. In contrast to the mottos of previous years, which concentrated on ecological behaviour, one aspect of sustainable media production, the 5th Media Mundo congress will look into an equally important sustainability aspect: economy. Particularly affected by the current economic situation and faced with the challenge of having to consolidate its market position, the printing and media industry is looking for practical measures and the required initiative. The congress is supported by the WWF and the FSC as NGO partners, Antalis (Europe’s leading wholesale group for communication media), IGEPA (one of the leading in paper wholesalers Europe Europa) and the Swedish SCA group. Werner M. Dornscheidt, President and CEO of Messe Düsseldorf, underlines drupa’s commitment to this subject: “The issue of green printing and sustainability across the entire process chain will be one of the focal points of drupa 2016. The aspect of sustainability has become a major concern of
brand owners all over the world, and they expect their printed communication to adhere to “green” standards. This is a challenge for the industry and printing service providers, and they are well advised not to veer from the path that they have already chosen”. Meanwhile, green printing has also become an important selling point. In the first “drupa Global Trends Report” (February 2014), 48% of all printing service providers reported that

they used certified paper to accommodate customer requirements. Another 37% operate a sustainable waste management system, and 33% are committed to a certified environmental management system. “Economic production is an important motivation for achieving a sustainable media production, and as such it generates important effects of ecological sustainability”, says Rüdiger Maaß, Managing Director of the association of the media production industry. “Economy is the cornerstone of competitiveness – an issue that has become more important than ever before.” The 5th Media Mundo congress will deal with topics such as “The effects of process optimisation”, “Energy efficiency” and “Standardisation”. It will also provide an overview over different ways of thinking
and provide some ideas on how to master this change and some answers the question of where this change might lead. International experts from science, environmental associations, politics and the industry will engage in a critical discussion about the current situation and about likely scenarios for the near future. Pioneers of sustainable media production will illustrate practical solutions as well as problems and unexpected challenges that they encountered.
Keynote speaker Dr. Daniel Dahm, Club of Rome Dr. Daniel Dahm, member of the Club of Rome, has kindly agreed to present a paper on the “The conflicting areas of global overshoot“. 45-year-old Dahm is founding member of the Utopia foundation and the
“Oekosoziales Forum Deutschland” (German eco-social forum) and is also member of different non-profit organisations. He has become internationally acclaimed because of his contribution to the Potsdam Manifesto of 2005. This paper explores the root causes of the current crisis and suggests a radical and far-reaching re-orientation for the future of human development. Renowned scientists and personalities from all over the world have already signed this manifesto.
The congress also presents the following speakers: •
• • •
•
Dr. Meike Gebhardt (Utopia AG) – How much sustainability do consumers want? Uwe Lübbermann (Premium Cola) – Marketing with potential for the future Peter Jeschke (GC Graphic Consult GmbH) – Sustainability in printing Alexander Rossner (zukunftswerk eG) – Communicating sustainability (Strategic tasks, practical advice and the argument of “benefit“) Michael Müller (IPM) – Wasting resources leads to economic ruin (Top ten of the most striking action areas for printing service providers and purchasers of printed products)

New E220 Saddle Stitcher from Muller Martini in Gernsheim HeiRa GmbH, which is based in the German town of Gernsheim and specializes in the print finishing of consumer magazines, company catalogs and inserts, will raise its net output by commissioning a new highperformance Tempo E220 saddle stitcher from Muller Martini in mid-February, thereby enabling it to increase its competitiveness in a market hit by falling margins.
The first Tempo, commissioned in 1997, served HeiRa reliably for almost 17 years in three-shift operation, stitching over one billion magazines with an average annual output of 65 million copies and operating with an output of 400,000 copies on peak days. Yes, even the most robust machine shows the effects of wear over time, so HeiRa will replace its Tempo, which company owner Klaus Heist has dubbed a “doit-all machine” owing to its ideal compromise between speed and flexibility, with a new Tempo E220. Heist has three objectives in mind with the new highperformance saddle stitcher from Muller Martini: “First, it will enable us to increase our net output. Second, we will optimize the end quality

of our products thanks to the numerous quality checks. Third, we will increase our competitiveness in a market where value creation has fallen in recent years.” The efficiency of the new Tempo E220 with a Robusto compensating stacker is increased not least by the novel stream feeding of the cover folder feeder, which can be fed from the same side and the same operator as the six flat pile feeders and the merchandise tipper. HeiRa, one of the largest print finishing businesses in Europe, produces some 325 million products annually using five high-performance saddle stitchers from Muller Martini – the new Tempo E220, three additional Tempo machines and a Supra. At peak times it produces almost 1,000 pallets with a total weight of 600 tons – per day!

Packaging Open House by Komori Some 96 visitors representing 59 companies from 17 countries participated in the event and experienced Komori’s ‘Packaging Solutions.’
The LITHRONE GX40 (GLX-640+C)/ LITHRONE GX40RP (GLX-840RP) Packaging Open House was held on June 12, 2014, at Komori Corporation’s Tsukuba Plant based on the theme ‘Komori Packaging Solutions.’ Held mainly for overseas customers, the event provided information to users interested in or considering a Lithrone GX40 or Lithrone GX40RP packaging press. The open house consisted of a seminar, factory tour, printing demonstrations, and presentations on packaging markets by customers. After the event, a party was held at a nearby hotel.
The participants watched the demonstrations of the LITHRONE GX40 and LITHRONE GX40RP. Narration of the demonstrations of both machines was handled by Doug Schardt of Komori America, and the general emcee was Yasuko Nakajima.
Key Notes : > Open House based on the theme ‘Komori Packaging Solutions’ held at Komori’s Tsukuba Plant. > Targeted customers for Lithrone GX40 and Lithrone GX40RP packaging press. > The demonstrations included printing, changeover and explanation of various control systems.
16
July 2014
At the beginning of the event, the visitors gathered in various seminar rooms in the Tsukuba Plant according to language. There, based on the ‘Packaging Solutions’ theme, they heard an explanation of trends in and the outlook for the overall printing industry, an introduction of corresponding Komori products (offset presses, Komori-Chambon machines, and digital printing systems), and a briefing on the functions and systems of the Lithrone GX40 and Lithrone GX40RP, which were specially specified for package printing. The seminar was followed by a tour of the Tsukuba Plant and lunch. First, the visitors gathered in front of the LITHRONE GX40 (six-color 40-inch sheetfed
offset press) and a commemorative photo was taken. The photograph later got output on Impremia C80 and copies were distributed among visitors.
LITHRONE GX40 (GLX-640+C) demonstration The press performed initial package printing of pharmaceuticals boxes on 0.3 mm stock with plates that had been mounted in the press ahead of time, and after checking colors and register, the press printed 500 sheets at 18,000 sph without any adjustment. During the run, the measurement results from PQA-S, which has a color control function in addition to the print quality inspection function, were shown on the operation stand monitor (KID) for confirmation by the automatic feedback function. During job changeover after the printing of 500 sheets, the various systems that support improvement of package printing productivity were explained, starting with the KHS-AI (Advanced Interface) integrated control system. The Lithrone GX40 can be equipped with a variety of features that are effective for package printing. By linking the automatic devices on the press with KHS-AI-based systems, quick stable operation is possible and paper waste can be significantly reduced. The narration also explained that by linking PDC-SX

(color control/automatic register adjustment/ Smart Feedback), which digitizes print quality and enhances high-level print quality control, and PQA-S (print quality inspection/ color control) to KHS-AI, optimization of the printing process can be further advanced and the productivity of package printing can be dramatically improved.
production continuing at the maximum printing speed because the machine does not stop while the feeder and delivery both change piles by means of the automatic nonstop operation system was also shown.
Since these systems are all Komori-made, the flow of data to KHS-AI is richer than would be the case if similar systems were sourced from various other manufacturers.

Job 2 - Package printing of confectionery boxes In the second job, 2,000 sheets of confectionery boxes were printed with heavy ink coverage on stock with a sheet thickness of 0.45 mm. Print quality inspection and density control by PQA-S were shown on the KID monitor, and small changes in densities could be confirmed in real time. In addition,

July 2014
After the demonstration on the GLX-640, the new control systems were explained.
Since repeat jobs are frequently run in the packaging industry, in addition to air and register presets, by enhancing the linkage with PDC-SX and PQA-S, it is possible to quickly invoke settings that have been used in the past.
<PDC-SX> Equipped with a color correction function that enables accurate feedback of special colors to meet the needs of package printing. Also, the Lithrone GX40 is equipped with a function that adjusts the image on the sheet to the correct position required for the die-cutting process. PDF comparison function: A PDC-SX option, this function captures the image on the printed sheet with image sensors for comparison with the originating PDF file data.
<PQA-S> Sheets are numbered on the feeder board. A new function accurately recognizes the die-cutting data, and a system that performs print quality control in units of blanks has also been added. After these explanations, the visitors moved to in front of the LITHRONE GX40RP (GLX840RP), and the second demonstration of the day started.
LITHRONE GX40 (GLX-840RP) demonstration The press performed initial package printing of gift boxes on 0.3 mm stock with plates that had been mounted in the press ahead of time, and after checking colors and register, the press printed 400 sheets at 16,500 sph without any adjustment. Also, measurement of the total time for two jobs was started as a ‘time challenge.’ The LITHRONE GX40RP is a 40-inch doublesided sheetfed offset press that uses an arrangement featuring single-edge gripping and the elimination of sheet reversal. Due
to single-edge gripping, the margin on the tail edge of the sheet that is necessary with perfectors is not needed, so paper costs can be held down. Thanks to the cylinder configuration of four double-size transfer cylinders without sheet reversal, the press offers stable transport of paper with high print quality in package printing. In addition, both front and back plates are imaged in the same direction, just as with a single-sided straight press, so plate imposition and operation are very efficient. After the printing of 400 sheets, the press completed changeover automatically up to test printing using the Smart Sequence system of KHS-AI without any operator assistance. The GLX-840RP used the A-APC Asynchronous Automatic Plate Changing System for simultaneous changing of all plates at the same time; this press is an eight-color machine but all platechanging can be completed in 85 seconds even if the machine is configured with 10 or 12 colors. Then front/back register adjustment and color matching were performed and production printing was started. The time for the job change – from the end of the first job to the start of production printing for the second job – was just 3 minutes 19 seconds. Even if the densities are off, automatic feedback to the press by the PDC-SX color control function allows production printing to be started right away.
Job 2 – Package printing of gift boxes In the second job, 400 sheets of confectionery boxes with heavy ink coverage were printed on paper with a sheet thickness of 0.3 mm. During the print run, the narrator explained the H-UV innovative curing system that was equipped on the press and the PQA-S Print Quality Assessment System that is mounted on two positions of the press for the front and back sides of the sheets. The total time for Jobs 1 and 2 in this demonstration was 8 minutes and 39 seconds. After both demonstrations were completed, visitors were able to freely inspect the machines. Then all of the visitors returned to the seminar room, and four of the world’s leading companies in the packaging industry provided presentations on the latest trends. A wide variety of topics were covered, from

Indian printing industry: colourful, alive, and growing An industry that provides employment opportunities to approximately 3 million people directly and more than 1.5 million indirectly, delivers a revenue growth that has consistently outpaced national GDP growth at 8.5%. It is estimated that India has over 200,000 printing presses with a capital investment of over $2 billion. Almost 75% of the printing presses are family-owned. Due to liberalization and globalization, the printing industry is progressing at a very fast speed by adopting modern technology and by employing professionals. The overall print market in India grew to $25.1 billion in 2012 from $12.6 billion in 2006, making a compound annual growth rate of 12.2%. However, the digital market grew at a higher rate of 25% from $600 million in 2006

to $2.3 billion in 2012. The Indian packaging industry – currently valued at over $14 billion – is also growing at 14-15% annually. This growth rate is expected to double in the next two years. These figures indicate a fairly rapid change in the industrial and consumer setup. There are about 600-700 packaging machinery manufacturers, 95% of whom are in the small and medium sector and are located all over India. One must realize, though, that the Indian printer works in a hyper-competitive market, dealing with stagnant print prices since several years. This consistent undercutting of print prices has resulted in the influx of some used equipment into the country, mostly one- to two color presses ranging in age of 15 to 20 years which has also negatively impacted the quality and consistency of printed products produced in the country. In order to realize and fructify the complete potential of this industry, printers must unite in their cause to improve working standards and quality output from their factories, embrace professional production techniques and invest in technology improvements sustainably over time. Print has a bright future in India and will continue to grow for the next two decades despite the prevalent growth of Tablets and E-media.

Increase added value with PUR extension The indispensability of PUR in premium softcover products.
PUR is all but indispensable for high-quality softcover products today, which is why perfect binding lines set up for hotmelt are often retrofitted with PUR, just like the Pantera from Muller Martini at Südostschweiz Presse und Print AG in the Swiss city of Chur.

Since only hotmelt production was possible on the Starbinder from Muller Martini, Südostschweiz Presse und Print AG had to outsource production of all PUR-bound products until just under a year ago. According to Lorenz Cajochen, Director of Technology/Printing Production for Customers at the company in Chur, that had two consequences: “First, demand for PUR among our customers of high-quality company brochures and annual reports increased owing to the better layflat behavior of the print products. Second, we didn’t have the entire value chain in-house.” In order to close that gap, Südostschweiz Presse und Print AG installed a secondhand Pantera to replace the Starbinder. “It suits our job structure perfectly, fits our limited space exactly in terms of layout, and the price was also right,” says Cajochen, explaining the decision to invest in the perfect binder from Muller Martini.
Three-knife Trimmer upgraded too Since the Pantera, which was manufactured in 2008,
was originally designed only for hotmelt production, it was retrofitted for PUR after the move to Chur under the MMUptodate label. “Of course you need to calculate precisely whether to buy a new system or a used one with additional functions,” says Cajochen. The Pantera with PUR extension was just the right solution for our budget. Südostschweiz Presse und Print AG now binds all its products using the PUR process, which removes the need to keep cleaning the glue pot. The increase in quality of the softcover books and brochures produced in Chur following commissioning of the Pantera, which is coupled with a 14-station gathering machine (with Asir 3 automatic signature image recognition) is also a result of the new threeknife trimmer. Südostschweiz Presse und Print AG decided to invest in a secondhand Zenith, rather than using the system of its predecessor. It ensures a clean three-side trim, after which the products are stacked in the CB 16. The Muller Martini technicians also made various adjustments, such as to the scoring rollers at the cover feeder, and replaced some wear parts.

PUR is crucial for Photo Books The extension of existing perfect binding lines for production with polyurethane adhesives is not only due to pressure from publishing companies and their end customers, but also in some countries, especially in warmer climates, because of statutory regulations. The Brazilian government, for instance, requires that school textbooks be PURbound to improve durability. The thermal stability guaranteed by PUR (in terms of both heat and cold) is required, for instance, for brochures placed in cars such as manuals or guide books. And PUR is essential when it comes to softcover products with coated paper or
paper with few wood fibers. “Production with photo paper isn’t possible without PUR,” says Rudolf Graf, Product Manager at Muller Martini Bookbinding Systems. “Our customers who order the production of prestige books, such as those in the automobile or watch industries, require good pull values, which can be achieved far better with the thinner glue application that is characteristic of PUR. Shorter-lived products, on the other hand, such as weekly or monthly magazines are mostly bound with hotmelt.”
Nozzle system as catalyst The popularity of PUR has grown since it was introduced in the 1990s, not least because the adhesives have kept on improving. The nozzle systems, which Muller Martini also offers for its perfect binders, acted as a PUR catalyst. “They have several benefits,” says Graf. “They are ideal for thin and even glue application. The viscosity always remains the same. Cleaning is far quicker because after
switching off the machine, there is no glue pot with residual adhesive film, which means no waste. The closed-loop system ensures high production speed and prevents the escape of steam. Bookbinders save costs because setup times are shortened so that productivity rises and less glue is used.” Retrofitting with PUR is relatively easy according to Graf: “Muller Martini provides the new PUR equipment, and the PUR pot and the nozzle are inserted into the baseunit of the perfect binder. Then come the premelter and the pre-heating station. The new installation typically takes us two days, followed by training, if necessary.” The dimensions of the perfect binding line remain the same, except for the cooling section. Around 90 seconds are needed for PUR, compared to 60 seconds for hotmelt. To extend the cooling section, where required, either the belts need to be lengthened or the production speed reduced. It is not possible to generalize about how quickly PUR extension of an existing line provides return on investment compared to a new investment, says Graf. “That has to be calculated on a case-by-case basis, depending on the perfect binder type or job volumes.”
Heidelberg AGM approves all items on the agenda with clear majority Around 1,750 shareholders participated in the Annual General Meeting of Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) for financial year 2013/2014, which was held at the Congress Center Rosengarten in
Mannheim. Approximately 29 percent of Heidelberg’s share capital was represented at the event. The Management Board discussed the
company’s strategy and the balance sheet figures for the past financial year (April 1, 2013 through March 31, 2014). In his speech, Heidelberg CEO Dr. Gerold Linzbach analyzed where he feels Heidelberg is currently at and then highlighted where the company is heading in the medium term. Following five years of losses, the net profit for financial year 2013/2014 was EUR 4 million. The next step is to secure the Group’s sustained profitability in the years ahead by expanding growth segments, implementing portfolio measures, and introducing structural cost projects. The aim is to achieve an EBITDA margin of no less than 8 percent as early as financial year 2015/2016. Approval from the company’s shareholders was needed for four of the five items on the AGM’s agenda. These included the raising of new conditional capital. All items on the agenda were approved with a clear majority.

World’s first 160-page LITHOMAN begins operation The world’s largest heatset commercial press from manroland web systems began operation on schedule at Kraft-Schlötels, part of the WKS Druckholding Group, in Wassenberg, Germany. At the drupa in May 2012, WKS Druckholding and manroland web systems set up a joint project to create the “world’s largest heatset commercial press”. Around 18 months later, on November 13, 2013, the idea has become reality: the two-web 80-page LITHOMAN demonstrated its performance to customers, suppliers, media, and guests invited from the worlds of politics and business at KraftSchlötels in Wassenberg. “For this project, we approached the press technology purely from the perspective of our customers. We intensively analyzed our customers’ needs regarding the flexibility of page numbers, formats, and product design, and tried to implement them as far as possible. As a result, a press was developed, which, on the one hand, consists of conventional press components that have never before combined in this way (two-web 80-page press). On the other hand, we also devised our own conceptions on folding technology that have given rise to extensive new designs at press supplier companies. Our new LITHOMAN press design now reflects our technological concepts regarding flexible and economic production.” Dr. Ralph Dittmann, Manager of WKS, was obviously impressed by the 160-page LITHOMAN press at its official start of production. WKS is one of the leading web offset companies in Germany and consistently orients itself toward customer needs. As a leader in innovation, the printing house has once again relied on Augsburg press technology: “The LITHOMAN presses have absolutely proven themselves in daily operation when it comes to printing stability, quality, and, above all, productivity.” The team of manroland web systems, emphasized the excellent cooperation with the immensely committed WKS specialists: “WKS had very clear ideas on production diversity and the resulting demands on the production process. Our colleagues from sales and design collaborated with WKS in a creative process to draft the press concept.

The result: a unique LITHOMAN press with customized technology.”
Extraordinary configuration WKS now produces at sites in Wassenberg and Essen with eight manroland web systems commercial web offset presses ranging from 32 to 80 pages. As part of the current investment, several older systems were decommissioned. The two-web 80page LITHOMAN with a total of web width of 4.5 meters is the equivalent of a 160-page press. As a result, it sets the benchmark for maximum productivity, producing up to 50,000 revolutions per hour. This LITHOMAN is something truly extraordinary for everyone involved. It features ultimate automation: in addition to the fully-automatic AutomaticPlateLoading APL®, the Inline Control systems developed by manroland to control fanout, color, and cut-off registers have also been integrated. These features optimize effective machine operation and reduce waste. The LITHOMAN will mainly be used to produce magazines, catalogs, and supplements. Josef Aumiller, Vice President Sales at manroland web systems, explains the significance of 160-pages in the production network: “The two LITHOMAN presses are operated together since they are equipped with one cutter module. This module was adapted to our customer WKS’ ideas and provides completely new
production options. In addition, the newly designed folder superstructure with three formers allows operators to run over up to twelve paper ribbons. This combination results into a previously undreamt of productivity and product options. Buzzwords like continuous two-page increments, complete flexibility in register products, a combination of two paper types, up to 500,000 products per hour, and format variability have suddenly become reality.”
Combining the advantages of different commercial printing processes In the past, web offset printing already offered a wide range of production options. With this extensive development step now completed, Josef Aumiller sees manroland web systems considers well prepared for the future: “manroland web systems now offers presses ranging from 16-pages to 160pages for commercial web printing. We have already completely filled the fields of high quality, cost-effective and quick printing form production, as well as maximum flexibility and productivity with our web offset presses for small, medium, and large runs. Now, we have managed to perfectly supplement our range of offerings and provide our customers with tailored, highly efficient press concepts, even for demands such as extremely large print runs and format variability.”

East India adapts Thermal Imaging Technology with Kodak CTP installations Kodak has announced the installation of Kodak CTP equipments in two key cities of East India. Milan Offset from Raipur, in business since 2009, saw the need to change their systems to save time. Mr. Ashish Kumar, Director at Milan Offset, firmly believes in delivering quality solutions for printing at highly competitive prices. To achieve this and increase their productivity, they installed KODAK ACHIEVE T400 CTP Platesetter with KODAK PRINERGY Workflow. Choosing Kodak was also a strategic choice in terms of using thermal imaging technology which provides quality differentiation over CTcP imaging. Kodak’s service support was also a strong factor for choice. The new setup has enabled Milan Offset to meet business goals and offer a higher level of service efficiency to customers too. There is now a positive change in quality while time efficiencies have improved as well. The relative simplification of print operations, better support to print operators and the
extended benefits of using Kodak thermal plates have led to Milan Offset’s setting up of a quality printing operation. The overall improvement in business operations has helped Milan Offset acquire new customers as well. Cuttack’s Mass Media are book publishers with their own production house. Changing business landscapes prompted them to diversify into commercial printing in recent years. In a market dominated by Violet technology, they needed to differentiate and deliver highquality imaging with thermal imaging. This led Mr. Joy Krishna Mohapatra, Managing Director at Mass Media, to choose the KODAK ACHIEVE T400 CTP Platesetter with KODAK PRINERGY Workflow to achieve their business needs. The small footprint of the Achieve has enabled Mass Media to bring their pre-press in-house, giving them better
business control. With the new Kodak set-up in place, Mass Media is now a quality print provider delivering high-quality applications like diaries, magazines, book covers, brochures and other unique applications. Both, Milan Offset and Mass Media, are playing a part in increasing the footprint of Thermal imaging technology in the east-India market where offset printing predominantly uses Violet technology.

Digital printing strengthens the future outlook of all media With its current projects, manroland web systems demonstrates its versatility as a provider of sophisticated digital postpress solutions. For the German manufacturer, manroland web systems, it is clear that digital printing will become increasingly important for newspapers, advertising, and books. This is why print media of the future will need digital solutions for postpress. Dieter Betzmeier, Vice President Technology and Project Execution at manroland web systems explains how the company plans to cater to these requirements.
Printshops and publishers can only be satisfied once they determine that a digital production line could not work any better and that they are using other available channels to distribute information based on their respective merits. This makes it possible to position printed media as one attractive alternative alongside other possibilities.
The change is indisputable – the production of more and more types of printed products, from newspapers to advertising to books, is going digital. Digital printing’s share in overall print volumes will continue to increase from its current level of 15% in the next few years. This shift is happening for a number of interesting reasons. As equipment manufacturers we ultimately need to realign our business to respond to these changes, as do our customers. We need to ask what is driving the increasing popularity of digital printing. Is it smaller print volumes, the faster speed of production, new editorial workflows, or investment costs?
Democratizing digital postpress Successfully realigning your business to capture a new segment is not a walk in the park. It’s not easy for our classic offset customers and it’s not easy for
us. At manroland web systems, we had to prove both our stamina and our innovative spirit. In the past year, in 2013, it really paid off as we were able to close a number of groundbreaking project contracts in digital postpress, which also included digital production workflows. We took a giant step forward in this area. Now, we want to use our current projects to let potential customers know how cost-effective and efficient digital postpress really is. And I would like to emphasize that we are interested to work together with all digital print manufacturers to develop a link to postpress. Our interfaces are open – for both offline and inline operation. The best example is the FoldLine system at Rotolito Lombarda. The fully equipped system will now be transitioned from offline to inline operation with a system from Hewlett-Packard. The result will be a fully automated production line.
Costs remain a pressing argument At manroland web systems, we don’t feel the need to understate our achievements. With our inline workflows for digital postpress, the objective is to help the whole market move forward. This lets our customers offer a number of attractive arguments for their printed products, from cost-efficiency to fast publishing with flexible content in great print
Key Notes : > Digital printing to become increasingly important for newspapers, advertising and books. > Print media of the future will need digital solutions for postpress. > With open interfaces for both offline and inline operation, manroland is keen to develop a link to postpress by collaborating with digital print manufacturers.

A newspaper that’s truly local The major player News Corp Australia is already publically deliberating the digitalization of its newspaper printing. The immense shipping costs in Australia are just one reason. Newspapers would no longer need to be flown to readers, but could be printed locally on site. manroland web systems has already garnered attention with local, customized solutions in digital newspaper production. In Germany alone, there are currently 329 daily newspapers. This means an enormous potential for digital printing. From a technical standpoint, the workflows ensure maximum flexibility of the folding technology for the production of both broadsheets and tabloids. For the production of advertising products, a quarter fold provides yet one more interesting option. The FoldLine: industry proven high-performance technology.
quality. Looking at cost structures in print technologies and comparing digital to offset, it is quickly apparent that products like a 16-pager require a smaller investment when they are printed digitally. That holds for print runs up to about 3,000 copies. At manroland web systems, our objective is always to offer a production technology with the lowest cost per copy while maintaining excellent quality. This applies for all segments, from commercial to digital printing and for all products, from newspapers to magazines, books, and ads.
Folder systems as product enhancers With the variable cut-off folding system FoldLine, Rotolito Lombarda provides an ideal example of how to integrate folding technology in a digital workflow and a business model. The system enables the Italian company to digitally recreate conventional offset products. From advertising media to books, newspapers, and magazines, all folding variations can be produced digitally. Book-on-demand and individualised or split runs of advertising supplements are not a problem. With
processing rates of up to 300 meters per minute, FoldLine is extremely speedy and can be used in conjunction with the fastest digital presses in the market. Dynamic job changeovers save time and make FoldLine even more attractive. To transition the workflow from offline to inline operation, the printnetwork Bridge is installed. The workflow links data from prepress and the HP digital press with the FoldLine and the RIMA postpress system. As an additional digital postpress solution, the book block solution FormerLine helps companies embark on new production “chapters”, as it did for the Hucais Group in China. Digital book production that’s both industrial and flexible – an interesting prospect for both short and long runs in this segment. Variable cut-off, dynamically adjustable from 145 to 420 mm is a key feature. Together with the RS34 book block stacker from RIMA-System, the high-performance FormerLine system can produce stapled signatures or up to 6000 auxiliary-glued book blocks per hour with a thickness of up to 70 mm. The prepared reels can be processed both offline and inline. High efficiency achieved through minimal changeover times both for format and paper changes was a key selling point. This claim was put to the test as the first system was purchased and inspected at Hucais in February 2014. Its acceptance and the goahead to order additional FormerLine units were the gratifying result.
A FormerLine aggregate like the system that will produce books at Hucais in China
Shaping versus managing News websites, ebooks and mobile advertising will continue to attract a growing readership. However, I do still believe that we can shape media markets with offset and digitally produced print products, and help define their future. Digital printing lives up to its promise by catering to specific customer requirements better than offset and on the same level as electronic media. Newspapers can score points in terms of journalism and advertising with individual content. Personalised mailings and targetgroup-specific catalogues and supplements will retain their importance. Young people still appreciate the feel of actual books. More printing companies need to become more open to new concepts and technologies – in digital printing and in digital media. Printshops and publishers can only be satisfied once they determine that a digital production line could not work any better and that they are using other available channels to distribute information based on their respective merits. This makes it possible to position printed media as one attractive alternative alongside other possibilities. Right now, this approach is promising: the majority of the population are not digital natives. People are adapting to the new media, with the Internet. It’s a peaceful coexistence, but they are not living “in” these media, as we’re often led to believe.

manroland web systems: Successful Start in 2014 Focusing exclusively on the core business web offset printing after the positive 2013 balance, manroland web systems could post numerous results in the first quarter. 2013 was a successful year for manroland web systems. The company strengthened its market position by setting new standards in its web offset technology. For 2014, manroland web systems has plans to cover all market segments, products, and services and to become a full web offset provider. The company has sold several presses, especially in the newspaper section, as well as service upgrades and retrofits during the last months.
COLORMAN e:line: A new press sets standards
manroland has installed the world’s largest commercial heatset press, the first 160page LITHOMAN at WKS Druckholding Group, Germany. The LITHOMAN press series is now the 96-page segment market leader with a two third market share.
The manroland web systems COLORMAN e:line sets new standards when it comes to printing quality, productivity, and machine design. The COLORMAN e:line is well known as the premium printing system for long production runs. With up to 100,000 copies/h it is the fastest newspaper press in its class, offering fine printing quality and high automation. The highly flexible new COLORMAN e:line is futureproof and has the ability to respond to changing market requirements. It shows easy operation with the hyper modern printnetwork operating system ControlCenter and modern automation features. The leading Kenyan newspaper printer Nation Media in Nairobi was convinced by the qualities of the COLORMAN e:line. The company has decided to invest in a new COLORMAN 4-1 e:line from
manroland web systems. The press will be installed in the second quarter of 2015 and is the first manroland web systems press in Kenya. This sets a clear sign for the future of the country`s newspaper industry. Also the Mediengruppe Oberfranken in Germany opted for a COLORMAN e:line with autoprint configuration from manroland web systems. Full automation, highest efficiency, flexibility and productivity are no longer dreams of the future at their printing site in Bamberg. The installation of the new COLORMAN e:line with autoprint configuration from manroland web systems is already planned for April 2015. The newspaper press for Mediengruppe Oberfranken offers all latest technologies and automation solutions one can imagine – from APL (Automatic Plate Change) via Inline Control systems to the new operating system ControlCenter with MobilPad operation. Beginning in April 2015, the 32 page press replaces two previous presses from Koenig & Bauer.
Success with the newspaper presses Besides the COLORMAN e:line, manroland web systems could also record success with their UNISET newspaper pressline. One UNISET press was sold to People`s Daily in China. China`s most influential newspaper opted for yet another press from manroland web systems. The UNISET, which will be

El Comercio in Lima already runs a LITHOMAN commercial press from manroland web systems. Now the company expands its printing plant with the first manroland web systems newspaper press for Peru. They invested in a second-hand UNISET 75 with the construction year 2007 that has been sold by the specialist for second hand presses, GWS printing systems (Netherlands). As partner of GWS, manroland web systems is responsible for parts of the engineering and the recommissioning of the press.
printservices: retrofits and upgrades The trademark printservices spans the entire service range of manroland web systems. This means comprehensive support – from classic repair service and maintenance to training, process optimization, and press.update solutions. All in line with the manroland web systems customary standards for reliable, high performance presses. For presses that run at full speed and workflows that “just flow”, manroland web systems offers analysis-based process optimization. Remote service and maintenance programs reduce waste and makeready times while minimizing any interruptions during production. Several customers in 2014 were convinced and upgraded their existing presses with offerings from the manroland web systems printservices portfolio. Bruehlsche Universitaetsdruckerei in Giessen (Germany) and Severotisk in Usti (Czech Republic) get latest control console technology from manroland web systems. manroland web systems develops integrated solutions for retrofits, custom-made for older printing presses. The solutions are designed to reduce downtimes and cancellation expenses and, at the same time, to increase the performance of the printing system. Retrofits assure the availability of
manroland web systems also won upgrade orders at two Gannett sites in the USA. The Indianapolis Star, with five GEOMAN presses, and The Daily Advertiser, equipped with two UNISET presses, ordered retrofits to modernize their pressroom equipment. Gannett Publishing Services as well has chosen the expertise from manroland web systems to upgrade and retrofit the press control systems on their presses.
Commercial press for Switzerland The highly specialized Swiss magazine printer AVD Goldach AG invests several million Euros in a new 16-page ROTOMAN DirectDrive from manroland web systems. The new ROTOMAN DirectDrive, which will be installed in 2015, is the sixth press of manroland web systems for AVD Goldach AG. The investment decision shows their trust in the excellent quality and reliability from the German press manufacturer. For more than 30 years, the manroland web systems commercial press ROTOMAN has set the benchmark for quality in premium magazine and catalog printing. The 16-page press is continually being expanded by innovative components for special applications. Thus, the ROTOMAN always remains state-ofthe-art and excites readers and advertising customers with the highest quality demands.
Digital printing solutions on the rise Digital inline finishing is evolving at lightning speed: in Milano, manroland web systems presented its FoldLine finishing system for industrial digital printing in February 2014. Ultra-small regional runs for newspapers, targeted advertising, and print-on-demand in book printing: digital printing systems create added value for successful publishing. As part of the manroland web systems Technology Forum at Rotolito Lombarda in Milan, the company demonstrated its latest digital production system FoldLine to more than 40 visitors – potential customers as well as the trade press. And the audience was impressed about the manroland web systems solution. Besides the FoldLine, manroland web systems also offers a digital folding solution for book printing
– the FormerLine. Producing with print-ondemand to optimize costs and being fast on the market are the challenges of digital book production. The FormerLine system stands for its industrial dimension. Both inline production and offline finishing of preprinted reels is possible. Together with the VBC collator from manroland web systems, the system generates stacked signatures of up to 6,000 auxiliary-glued books, up to 100 mm thick, per hour. All in all great solutions that are on the rise at the digital printing market – several success stories and contracts are expected for 2014.
Highlights in 2013 – Great success in 2014 “We can look back to several highlights in 2013,” says Dieter Betzmeier, responsible for Technology and Project Execution at manroland web systems. “We successfully installed the world’s largest commercial heatset press, the first 160-page LITHOMAN at WKS Druckholding Group, Germany. The LITHOMAN press series is now the 96-page segment market leader with a two third market share. In the newspaper sector, we introduced the high-performance COLORMAN e:line series. In the very dynamic digital segment, we established ourselves as the preferred industrial finishing solutions provider for high-speed digital web inkjet printers securing two major orders from Hucais Printing in China and Rotolito Lombarda in Italy. Additionally, 34 of our new ControlCenters with MobilPads have been sold since the official product launch at drupa 2012.”
Total solution for web offset Building on these successes, the strategy for 2014 is intensifying and expanding the web offset business, amongst others with a realigned worldwide sales and service organization and the opening of new market segments. “We believe in the future of web offset,” says Joern Gossé, Managing Director at manroland web systems. “This is why we are going to invest significantly in R&D as well as in product range and services extension. We will continue to focus exclusively on web printing technology, evolving into a full range supplier.” And this shows to be the right course of action as the first quarter is the most successful start for manroland web systems since the company reestablishment.

Newsprint Waste Management – the latest Special Report to be released at WAN-IFRA India 2014 WAN-IFRA announces the release of its latest special SFN report on Newsprint Waste Management authored by Mr. Kasturi Balaji, Director, Kasturi & Sons Ltd., publishers of The Hindu, a leading national daily newspaper in India. Newsprint accounts for around 50% to 60% of the total cost of producing a printed newspaper. Over the years, several technology advancements have made newspaper production a finely tuned industrial process. However, efficient use of newsprint is an area that calls for serious and close attention. A sharp focus on the management of newsprint waste will have a dramatic positive impact on the efficiency of the whole production process. “Each percent of saved waste reduces the production cost said Manfred Werfel, Deputy CEO and Executive Director, WAN-IFRA. “Waste occurs at all stages of production and delivery, including areas, where the printing plant has no control. This
makes combating waste a complex problem. Considering the cost of newsprint, reducing the waste can make a uniquely valuable contribution to the organisation He added. “The WAN-IFRA South Asian Committee has focused its attention repeatedly on this topic and I thank Mr. Balaji for writing this report. Kasturi Balaji, who is also the chairman of the WAN-IFRA South Asian Committee said, “The newspaper industry is greatly indebted to those members of the WAN-IFRA (then IFRA) Newsprint Committee that compiled and approved the Newsprint and Newsink Guide in 1993. That Guide has served as the main reference and source of material for this paper on newsprint waste management. This paper attempts to both update the content of the section on efficient use of newsprint and bring in the Indian context wherever applicable. The report will be formally released at WAN-IFRA India 2014 conference, 17-18 September, New Delhi, and presented at
the World Publishing Expo in Amsterdam, 13–15 October. Mr. Balaji will also speak about newsprint waste management in the Printing Summit of the conference in New Delhi and in the new “World Printers Forum conference, 15 and 16 October, Amsterdam. Magdoom Mohamed, Managing Director, WAN-IFRA South Asia said, “As the circulation of newspapers continues to increase in India, this topic of waste management is of huge significance. This special report will help our members to learn about the latest best practices in reducing newsprint waste. We take great pride in releasing this report at our annual conference. Delegates of the WAN-IFRA India conference – Printing Summit will get a free printed copy of the report. The report will also be available for download at WAN-IFRA’s website for all WAN-IFRA members free of charge.

“Until the installation of the QuadTech register and ribbon systems with MultiCam, we were measuring colour and colour register manually,” said Mr. S. Balasubramanian Adityan, Daily Thanthi Director. “The biggest challenge came when the number of colour pages increased; it was very difficult for operators to control register on our high-speed, double width and double circumference presses. “The installation of the QuadTech systems benefits us in five ways: we can shorten make-ready times, reduce startup waste, achieve consistent colour,
and optimize labour and press usage, while also contributing towards a better product and increased readership,” he said. The technology has been installed recently at four of Daily Thanthi’s plants: in Cuddalore, Coimbatore, Tirunelveli and Nagercoil, in Tamil Nadu, in the southern Indian Peninsula. Two additional QuadTech systems have been in operation at the group’s headquarters in Chennai since 2010-11. The choice of the QuadTech systems was based on the company’s proven technology, reliability, locally available spare parts and service support, and QuadTech’s high market share in India. “Since installing the systems, we have seen a 20% reduction in the time taken to achieve good register, and a 10% reduction in waste. Our ability to maintain consistent colour throughout the run

has also increased, giving us better overall quality,” said Mr. Adityan. “We used to face a challenge after each auto-pasting cycle, with variations in register, but that has been completely eliminated.” The QuadTech Register Guidance System with MultiCam® offers unmatched colorregister performance with operational flexibility. With lateral and circumferential register control, MultiCam searches marks as small as 0.36mm (0.014in) up to 30 times per second, even during make-ready and upsets in web tension. The QuadTech Ribbon Control System with MultiCam provides a high level of ribbon control tasks including cut-off, print-to-cut, print-to-fold and crossover register. Both systems are operated from QuadTech’s ICON™ platform with a user-friendly interface that facilitates quick and easy job setup, minimizes waste and integrates with downstream equipment such as UV coaters, perforators and rotary cutters. Speaking for QuadTech, Vinodhkumar Balakrishnan, Regional Sales Manager, QuadTech, said: “Daily Thanthi Group has been carrying out an investment program, renewing its press and ancillary technologies in its print centers. This has contributed not only to better print quality but also to a notable increase in the paper’s circulation. We’re very pleased that the Daily Thanthi Group has chosen QuadTech as a partner to
bring about the changes that are contributing to this growth.”
More than just a newspaper Established in 1942 with a mission to educate and create awareness among all sections of the Tamil community, Daily Thanthi today is a full-color broadsheet newspaper printed in 16 locations with a circulation of more than 1.5 million and an estimated readership in excess of 7 million.

When the original KODAK NEXPRESS 2100 Digital Color Production Press was announced in 2001, there was an emphasis on designing the new press with the backbone of an offset press. Both then and now, tight registration and a support philosophy around the press operator maintaining press quality and consistency have been heralded as advanced for the
industry. When Kodak introduced the updated 2100 Plus in 2005, the design allowed for frequent and significant upgrades to the press as new features, functionality and improved consumables became available to the market. Electronics, specifically Digital Front Ends (DFEs), has traditionally been an area where digital presses have not had the same benefits as an offset press design. While an older offset press can sustain production for decades, digital devices have often become obsolete as advances in electronics are incorporated in new designs and offerings from manufacturers. With NEXPRESS Presses, Kodak has made a concerted effort to change that approach with the continuous improvement and availability of robust, proprietary front end electronics for the press. To support that endeavour, Kodak is introducing the KODAK NEXPRESS VII Front End High Performance and Ultra Performance configurations, the newest DFEs for the KODAK NEXPESS Platform.

Konica Minolta introduces bizhub PRESS C1070/C1060 Konica Minolta has introduced its latest Production Printing Machine bizhub PRESS C1070/C1060 targeting print providers that demand greater quality, productivity and scalability. The A3 size colour printer is designed to print high volumes typical of large workgroups.
Harmonics concept The digital printing system must provide new ways to create more orders and coexist in harmony with the offset business to increase business and customer satisfaction for print providers. That’s because more and more customers today are demanding more advanced paper media, a wider variety of small-lot orders with quick turn-around which is contrary to the “mass printing” specialised by offset presses, and personalised printing to support one-to-one marketing.
FM screens with enhanced resolution and granularity eliminate jaggedness and moiré for smoother reproductions. In addition, the optimal screen processing can also be selected to match the quality required for the output based on the dots and lines.
over the long term. Its longer life also helps to minimise downtime. Auto calibration offers up to 15 correction values according to paper or screen type. In addition, a mode that measures RGB as well as CMYK for the target colour further enhances accuracy.
High precision outline processing practically eliminates blurs and raggedness of lines, normally associated with digital printing, to reproduce text details in higher definition. Quality is even improved for outputs that combine coloured text with thin lines and sharp outlines. The newly developed registration swing mechanism is standardequipped with a centring detection sensor on the registration portion of the engine to provide high-precision centring correction. Adopted for all four colours, auto-refining developing delivers stabilised high quality even for full colour images. New carrier along with the toner is regularly supplied to refresh the developer, stabilising the developer condition to maintain high quality outputs
Both models can be configured with a comprehensive range of modular in-line finishing options.
Based on this Harmonics concept, the bizhub PRESS C1070/C1060 are Multi-Role Digital Presses designed to accomplish a wider range of printing missions at higher standards for the next level of success for print providers.
The thorough pursuit for offset quality With the new bizhub PRESS C1070/C1060, print providers can reproduce minute text and thin lines clearly as well as rich colour gradations even for colour images through synergy with 1,200 × 1,200 dpi highresolution printing and Simitri HDE toner. With eight-bit multi-gradation data processing flow for each colour displays 256-step gradations within a single pixel, both colour and monochrome data can be processed in 1200 dpi x 8-bit resolution.

Xerography is 75 years old Xerox celebrates 75 years of Xerography and simplifying how work gets done
Even today, the Xerographic Process, invented by Chester Carlson, is still at the heart of most office printers and copiers around the world. Trained as a physicist and lawyer, Carlson was a serial inventor. He kept notebooks full of a wide array of inventions including a rotating billboard, raincoat with gutters and a shoe cleaning machine. In honour of his inquisitive nature and his remarkable invention, that truly changed how business has been conducted for decades, this October Xerox is kicking off a celebration of innovation and its role in the company’s history and future. Over the next year, Xerox employees and partners will be engaged in a series of activities celebrating and imagining the future through the company intranet, webchats and social media.
This year marks the 75th anniversary of the first xerographic image, created by Chester Carlson in a rented second story room in Queens, N.Y. This humble invention would eventually lead to the formation of the Xerox Corporation and the birth of an industry.
Key Notes : > Written in a bold hand on a glass slide was the date and location: 10-22-38 Astoria. > The copy might have been fuzzy, but it was still a copy. > In fact, it was the world’s first xerographic copy.

“Now is the time when many companies would look back, and we certainly will, but only for a moment. The real focus of our celebration will be the future and how Xerox will continue to simplify how work gets done,” said Ursula Burns, Xerox CEO and chairman of the board. “That’s why the theme of our anniversary year is ‘The Next 75.’” Carlson’s vision at the time of his Astoria experiment was “to make office workers a little more productive and office work a little simpler and less tedious.”

reflected light from an illuminated image is projected onto the photoreceptor. In either case, the areas of the photoreceptor exposed to light are selectively discharged, causing a reduction in the electric field. The darker areas retain their charge.
3.
Develop
Pigmented powder used to develop the image is called toner. Toner particles made of colorant and plastic resin have precisely controlled electrostatic properties and range from about five to 10 micrometers in diameter. They are mixed with and charged by magnetized carrier beads that transport them to the development zone. The particles are charged by the phenomenon of triboelectricity (often referred to as static electricity). The electric field associated with the charge pattern of the image on the photoreceptor exerts an electrostatic force on the charged toner, which adheres to the image. A color document is formed by a printer with four separate xerographic units that create and develop separate cyan, magenta, yellow and black images. The superposition of these powder images produces full-color documents.
4. Transfer Ursula Burns, Xerox CEO and chairman of the board
He also added, “Transformation is inherent in the Xerox DNA. Xerox has always looked at the future. Be it the document revolution in the digitized world to the next big leap in document management services; Xerox has always been in the forefront of transforming document technologies and making office work a little more simple and making enterprises more productive and efficient. Our foray into Business Process & ITO services carries forward the same philosophy with an expanded services offering and today we have evolved to become the world’s leading enterprise for business process and document management.” Xerox has changed greatly in size and scope since this time, but the basic principles have remained the same. From printers and copiers to transportation, education, and even healthcare the company’s team of engineers, scientists and researchers are continuing to invent in ways that make work, and life, a little simpler.
The Six Step Process Carlson invented to transfer an image from one surface to another:
1. Charge Inside every copier and laser printer is a light-sensitive surface called a photoreceptor. It consists of a thin layer of photoconductive material that is applied to a flexible belt or drum. The photoreceptor is insulating in the dark, but becomes conducting when it is exposed to light. It is charged in the dark by applying a high DC voltage to adjacent wires, which produces an intense electric field near the wires that causes the air molecules to ionize. Ions of the same polarity as the voltage on the wires deposit on the photoreceptor’s surface, creating an electric field across it.
2. Expose In a digital copier or printer, the image is exposed on the photoreceptor with a scanning modulated laser or a light-emittingdiode image bar. In older analog copiers,
The powder image is transferred from the photoreceptor onto paper by bringing the paper in contact with the toner and then applying a charge with polarity opposite to that of the toner. The charge must be strong enough to overcome the powder’s adhesion to the photoreceptor. A second precisely controlled charge releases the paper, now containing the image, from the photoreceptor.
5. Fuse In the fusing process, the toner comprising the image is melted and bonded to the paper. This is accomplished by passing the paper through a pair of rollers. A heated roll melts the toner, which is fused to the paper with the aid of pressure from the second roll.
6. Clean Toner transfer from the photoreceptor to the paper is not 100 percent efficient, and residual toner must be removed from the photoreceptor before the next print cycle. Most medium- and high-speed copiers and printers accomplish this with a rotating brush cleaner.

The coming years will be all about digital colour, presenting a market opportunity for technology vendors as well as users. As the printing industry transitions into a new phase of growth, Konica Minolta introduced Bizhub Press C70hc which produces vivid colour quality that surpasses other production print systems in the market. With a print speed of 71 ppm, it is ideal for graphics professionals and print shops that require higher quality output and enhanced colour gamut. Advertising agencies, graphics arts firms, creative design studios, photography studios, direct mail organizations, and commercial printers all stand to benefit by using the Bizhub PRESS C70hc. The Bizhub PRESS C70hc leverages Konica Minolta’s eco-friendly high chroma toner, first introduced with the game-changing bizhub PRO C65hc. The environment-friendly toner
incorporates innovative technology enabling it to produce a wider colour gamut than the typical four-color device in the marketplace. In addition, it generates less waste and emits less Carbon Dioxide, Nitrogen Dioxide, sulphur Dioxide. Further, the toner particles are consistently sized and smaller when compared to conventional toner size particles for a smoother finish and sharper text. Print controller is a critical part in a printer as it receives the data to be printed and decides how to lay everything. Konica Minolta has options from industry leaders in Color Technology like EFI, CREO and also has its in house developed IC-601 internal print controller in Bizhub PRESS C70hc. The machine prints at 1,200 dpi printing at full rated engine speed, high-speed RIP processing and transfer between control and print engine, enhanced accuracy in CMYK colour reproduction, and new colour management functions, job control, editing functions, and remote operation capabilities. The solution features optimized profiler—a mapping algorithm with settings fine-tuned to achieve various results: CMYK, similar to offset colour reproduction; RGB natural mode, for natural reproduction to match
prints from the normal CMYK process and switching between the modes of normal and vivid, for maximum use of the colour space to emphasize vivid colours. “The bizhub PRESS C70hc gives organizations considerable advantage for cross-media communication, unifying corporate and brand identity across different communication platforms,” said Mr. Balakrishnan, Exec. General Manager( Mktg), Konica Minolta Business Solutions India Pvt. Ltd. “It produces brighter, more vivid colour because it reproduces a larger portion of the sRGB colour gamut than previously possible. Our customers can count on Konica Minolta to provide a competitive edge by delivering eye-catching output that is closer to what is displayed on sRGB monitors versus traditional four-color devices,” he further adds. The Bizhub PRESS C70hc also features Konica Minolta’s proprietary advanced colour processing technology—SEAD (ScreenEnhancing Active Digital Process)—and combines an array of technical innovations to guarantee truly exceptional colour reproduction at top speed.

A new definition for ‘Labels’ FINAT Congress debates changing influences and technologies.
The label industry is no longer a separate and definable niche in the broader field of packaging print. It has a new and extended profile as a provider of product decoration, brand identity, product data, smart phone interaction, track-and-trace and authentication data -- and, indeed of packaging itself. Members of FINAT, the international trade association for self-adhesive labelling and related industries, convened in June in Monte Carlo for their 2014 annual congress, to address the core topic of ‘The Battle for Shelf Appeal’.
There are five key pillars for successful brand identity. Shape, which conveys the character of the product; colour, which engages our emotions; the use of a unique visual language that confirms authenticity; ‘endorsements’ underlining product quality and authority; and, through the packaging’s finish, defining the product as an aspirational international premium brand.
Key Notes : > The Label Industry has a new and extended profile. > FINAT members address ‘The Battle for Shelf Appeal’. > Mike Ferrari addressed the topic of ‘innovation for labelling and packaging profit’.
46
July 2014
Congress Moderator Marc Büttgenbach (DE), worldwide sales director for Bizerba Labels and Consumables, introduced the keynote speaker – Rik Olthof (NL), brand strategist at international branding and packaging design consultancy Cartils.
The essence of branding Mr Olthof explained the essence of branding, showing how important the look and feel of a product are to its ‘shelf appeal’. The key to success is to ensure product impact and visibility in a variety of different environments, from supermarkets – (where, today, the consumer spends an average of just 20 minutes, making ‘shelf appeal’ essential for the purchasing decision) – to clubs and bars. Mr Olthof identified a number of iconic names like Nike, Lamborghini, and Smirnoff, whose branding pathways are demonstrably successful.
Looking at the label industry Next on the agenda was an overview of trends in
the French label markets, delivered by Dominique Durant-des-Aulnois (FR), currently vice president of the French label association, UNFEA, and general manager of label makers Paragon Identification, assisted by well-known label trade journalist, publisher, and consultant John Penhallow (FR). France’s self-adhesive label industry embraces around 400 production sites and 7000 employees – mostly SMEs and, geographically, quite fragmented. Most UNFEA label converters reported a dramatic sales increase, powered by the need to ‘be different’, export to other regions, and innovate. The everincreasing EU ‘red tape’ relating to label content could, in fact, represent ‘a green light for label converters’. This presentation set the scene for Jules Lejeune (NL), managing director of FINAT, to present his annual 360º tour of the label industry, including the underlying trends and forces for the industry as a whole and for FINAT members.
Expert panel discussions Two valuable panel discussions followed. Firstly, representatives from key aspects of the international industry supply chain – Krones, Avery Dennison, and Karlville Development -- came together to debate the subject of the ‘battle of decoration technologies’. Then it was time to hear the brand owners’ viewpoint on ‘the future of product decoration’ via a second panel discussion featuring representatives from L’Oréal, LEGO, Reckitt Benckiser; and G3 Enterprises.

70% of purchasing decisions are no longer made in store, and where the world’s six billion cellphones interact with smart features on packaging. Today, a product’s first sales message might be anything from a friend’s Facebook message to a printable coupon that generates ‘stop, hold, and buy’ in-store. It is a sign of the times that, in last year’s earnings call, Procter & Gamble’s ChairmanCEO estimated that the company now spends up to 35% of its marketing budget on digital media. The key to continuing brand success, however, remains in the consumer’s experience of the product in use and, if that experience is good, in repurchase.
Industry awards presentations Industry awards presentations concluded the first day’s proceedings. This year they celebrated success not only in the FINAT Label Competition and Congress Logo Competition, but also in the new FINAT Recycling Awards – in which Unilever took the first-ever end-user company award and Hagmaier Etiketten & Druck the first-ever label converter award.
‘Innovation for profit’ Next morning, the topic of ‘innovation for labelling and packaging profit’ was addressed by Mike Ferrari, founder and president of Ferrari Innovation Solutions, and for 32 years a key figure in Procter & Gamble management. He illustrated his talk with many fascinating examples of how the shopper’s journey is changing, and how solutions for engaging the shopper are also evolving. ‘If people are in the virtual world,’ said Mr Ferrari, ‘how can we make them buy products in the REAL world?’ P&G’s ‘first moment of truth’ – originally the first eye contact with a packaged product on a retail shelf – is a different matter in a world where
Mass production has also spawned mass customisation – like the ‘personalised’ CocaCola bottles, featuring popular male and female first names, which have graced retail shelves in 32 countries across Europe and represent the longest digital packaging print run ever. So what is there in this new world for the label converter, asked Mr Ferrari? --To be shopper-/consumer-focused was at the top of the list. The need to consider the shopper journey beyond the retail shelf came next. Label printers should redefine their role more broadly – as solutions providers and marketing companies. These elements, said Mr Ferrari, are the successful route to ‘leveraging packaging for profit’.
Printed electronics One such route which FINAT member companies are increasingly taking is the creation of printed electronics. The UK’s Centre for Process Innovation (CPI) is a consortium of major companies committed to creating a UK supply chain to enable
the widespread adoption of low-cost, NFC devices using printable electronics, and currently running a project focused on enabling smart phones to connect with labels and other packaging, and other documents. Alan McClelland (UK), head of business development at CPI, showed that, while printed electronics are a feature of many more applications than just labels, packaging can successfully employ printed electronics to deliver ‘smart’ interactive brand features; ‘bling’ on the pack; and track-and-trace, stock reordering, tamper-proofing and anticounterfeiting. Sadly, the extended nature of the smart packaging supply chain has created a real problem in fast-tracking the commercial development of this extremely versatile technology because, he said, brand owners, retailers, pharmaceutical manufacturers, and other major suppliers will not invest ‘until the technology is there’.
Flying high with Bertrand Piccard Broadening the horizons -- into the realms of the sky and beyond -- is a topic on which Bertrand Piccard (CH) is unquestionably well-qualified to speak, as the achiever of the first-ever non-stop, round-the-world hot air balloon flight in 1999. M. Piccard’s motivational presentation encouraged delegates to embrace his definition of freedom as the ability to explore the alternatives, the other possibilities, with courage and pioneering spirit – even in the business world, where exploration of the unknown can unleash successful innovation. It is a real challenge to take a new, unmapped direction, but it is important to realise, he said, that, in fact, ‘we need fear. Never be afraid of it: it’s just a signal that we are moving out of our comfort zone – a moment of waking up, of awareness.’ Drawing the event to a close, FINAT President Kurt Walker commended the Congress programme, which had proved an excellent overture to FINAT’s new Congress format which, as Jules Lejeune summarised, ‘is a real driver for forward thinking at all levels. FINAT is committed to building on this inaugural event in the coming months through the new web-based knowledge and learning platforms, our expanded definition of the label, our recycling and public affairs initiatives, and, of course, our focus point for tomorrow’s industry leaders – the FINAT Young Managers Club.’

rudolf reproflex increases corrugated postprint quality with nyloflex® NExT exposure In 1986, Andreas Rudolf, together with just five employees, founded a company in Goslar, Germany, to specialise in the processing of flexo printing plates. The business became so successful that new employees were steadily hired in the following years. In 1992, a second site was opened in Leipzig, Germany, and today, about 130 staff members are employed at the two sites. rudolf reproflex GmbH aims to offer innovation and competence as a packaging agency. Thus, the company relies on innovative ideas, the know-how of a highly qualified staff and an excellent range of hightech equipment. rudolf reproflex develops high quality prepress products for flexo, as well as offset printing, for all of the primary application segments, including corrugated preprint and postprint, foils, labels and heavy duty sacks, just to name a few. From the individual packaging concept up to a complex workflow solution – customers can always expect the highest quality products and comprehensive service. This concept proves to be effective, as rudolf reproflex is one of the leading specialty agencies in the international packaging market. One of the company’s keys to success is staying optimally equipped with the latest technology. Especially in corrugated postprint, flat top dots and optimised surface screening play more and more of an important role - this is why deciding on the right technology is crucial for obtaining the highest quality. As printing plates produced with the nyloflex® NExT exposure technology show a significant improvement in fluting during printing, rudolf reproflex decided to acquire such an exposure from Flint Group. The nyloflex® NExT exposure technology utilises a high intensity UV-A LED light source to conduct rapid crosslinking of the photopolymer surface before oxygen inhibition can occur, resulting in a flat top dot structure on the printing plate and a virtual 1:1 image reproduction from the digital file to the finished plate. This technology does not require any additional consumable items or steps; additionally, it can easily be incorporated into the existing digital workflow.

The high level of UV emission leads to a significant improvement in the reproduction of the fine relief elements. When combined with high resolution surface screening, the resulting surface texture of the flat top dots provides an optimal surface to enhance ink laydown, ink density, and consistency in printing. In flexible packaging, printing plates exposed with this technology allow excellent ink transfer, particularly in solids. In corrugated printing, fluting will considerably be reduced as the LED exposure allows a better control of the relief profile. Additionally, the nyloflex® NExT technology provides significantly improved reproduction quality and long-term stability. “Our company and Flint Group have a longstanding and close working relationship“, says Maik Gottschlich, head of the printing plates department at rudolf reproflex, “we are always very satisfied with the cooperation. Recently, flat top dots became an important issue in the market, and with the nyloflex®

NExT exposure technology, Flint Group provides the opportunity to achieve a highly accurate reproduction in corrugated postprint. We have also been convinced by the many positive characteristics of the exposure – the temperature control of the exposure bed, for example, enables better dimensional stability and repeatability. Additionally, the device could be implemented in our digital workflow without any problems.”

Web Offset has many advantages: Package printing for the Food industry Since even the slightest migration of inks can turn into a major disaster, package printers have to satisfy the high expectations of food producers. The VSOP variable web printing press from Muller Martini lets printers meet these demands. “For all of our packaging materials, we require our printers to use only state-ofthe-art printing methods that are designed for food contact applications,” says Dr. Stéphane Papilloud, Packaging Group Manager, Quality & Safety Department, Nestlé Research Center in Lausanne, Switzerland. That means that there cannot be any harmful effects on human health or any unacceptable changes to the organoleptic characteristics of the product (detrimental effects on smell, taste, color or appearance), and that everything must comply fully with all relevant statutory regulations of the country in which the products are sold. The producers of packaging materials have to demonstrate their compliance with Nestlé’s requirements – both physical, such as artwork, and chemical, such as migration values, as well as sensory harmlessness of the printed packaging materials. “That’s why Nestlé only considers suppliers that can meet our commercial and technical requirements in a sustainable way,” Papilloud says. “Suppliers of packaging materials are called to account if our requirements are not satisfied.”
In-House Standards In addition to the legal requirements imposed, for example, by the European Union, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration or the Chinese government, Nestlé sets its own, stricter standards for food packaging, for instance for the printing of the inside and outside of packaging and
for UV inkjet printing and residual solvents. “We always keep our suppliers updated about those requirements,” Papilloud says. The expert from the global corporation is impressed by electron beam inks. “It’s a good technology that does not require photo-initiators, so that there cannot be any resulting migration. However, the principles of low migration potential and low odor must also apply to the rest of the printing ink formulation such as acrylates resins, oligomers and additives.”
Environmental Goods Since the costs of compliance with extensive environmental requirements (exhaust air treatment and explosion prevention) do not apply due to the use of UV or electron beam printing inks, the environmental factor is one of the three major advantages that the web offset printing method offers for food packaging, explains Bernd Sauter, Managing Director of Muller Martini Printing Presses GmbH, Germany. “There are neither residual inks nor residual solvents, and neither are explosion-proof storage for inks and solvents nor a wash-up system for machine parts, cylinders and inking rollers required. That leads in total to far lower insurance costs for a production site.”
Growing Range of Substrates According to the printing press expert from Muller Martini, there is another important benefit of web offset: the growing range of printable substrates. “Until a few years ago, certain substrates such as polyethylene could not be processed or required special knowledge of the complex printing process. Today, advances in technology enable the stable and reliable printing of such substrates using web offset.”
Dr. Stéphane Papilloud: “Nestlé only considers suppliers that can meet our commercial and technical requirements in a sustainable way.”
Whether it be the thermoplastic synthetic material polyethylene, polylactic acid (PLA) consisting of corn starch, or stretch sleeves, which are increasingly widespread thanks to the new web tension regulation on the VSOP variable web printing press, good cooperation between Muller Martini and suppliers is contributing considerably to new substrates establishing themselves increasingly quickly, Sauter explains. Another example is LPDE (low density polyethylene), used by another of Muller Martini’s European customers for printing. The LPDE foil feels softer and thicker, has lower density than a traditional foil made from HDPE (high density polyethylene) and barely rustles. Thanks to these specific qualities, it is ideally suited to the packaging of frozen foods.
Lower printing plate costs, diverse substrate options and a reduced environmental impact – the variable size VSOP web offset printing press from Muller Martini has become a real alternative in package printing.

Seikodo installs first nyloflex APP in Japan In April 1959, the tradeshop Seikodo Company Ltd. was officially founded in Chuo City, a region in the East of Tokyo. However, the Japanese company has been producing stamps long before that time. In those days, stamps were engraved in laborious handwork by skilful specialists. Only after investing in a laser engraving system, the production could switch to rubber printing plates. Cast-molding for rubber material was implemented in 1970, and in 1980 they started with processing liquid-polymer and solid plates. In October 1984, Seikodo installed the first flexo CTP system in Japan, and in February 1985, the era of digital flexo prepress began for the company. Since then the company has grown constantly. Over time, production sites were founded, and in the year 2006, the headquarters were moved to the Chuo-ku district in Tokyo. There, and at the three additional sites in Chiba, Maebashi, and Oyama, about 100 employees serve clients not only in Japan, but also in China, Korea
and Taiwan. More than 80% of the customers are in the corrugated business, many of them in the preprint area. An additional 15% are supplied with ITR technology or plates which are already mounted on sleeves, and the remaining percentage of printing plates is sold to customers in the solid segment, particularly for printing beverage packaging, labels, etc. At the end of 2013, Seikodo decided to acquire a nyloflex® Automated Plate Processor (APP) of the latest generation. The nyloflex APP is a fully automated processing line with premium equipment with outstanding productivity and consistency, and includes a washer, dryer and light finisher. The high performance processing line has a capacity of up to 110 printing plates/295 m² per day. Across all tested plates, the nyloflex® APP shows a significant reduction of the processing time of more than 35% compared with stand alone devices. The productivity can be increased by 25%, thus reducing labour costs.
Munetaka Mukasa, Flint Group Business Manager in Japan, Osamu Kaneko, Factory Manager Seikodo, and Kenji Shimazaki, President and CEO Seikodo (from left to right) are pleased with the successful start-up of the new nyloflex® APP
“Especially because of its efficiency and high level of standardisation, we decided for the nyloflex® APP,” states Kenji Shimazaki, President and CEO of Seikodo. “Flint Group offers printing plates of excellent quality and is on an outstanding technological level. That’s why we want to further intensify the good cooperation between our businesses.”
