Bharat loses its Ratna

Bharat Ratna former President (2002-2007) of India, Dr. Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam left for his heavenly abode on 27th July 2015.

He was 83.

“Look at the sky. We are not alone. The whole universe is friendly to us and conspires only to give the best to those who dream and work,” he once said.

The ‘Missile Man of India’ remained friendly to the universe and won friends across ages all his life. His dream and his work brought the best for us and also for our future generations. Having once sold newspapers to support his family income, he later started his career by designing a small helicopter for Indian Army. He remained associated with the high-profile strategic national science and technological projects. He played key role in India’s indigenous Satellite Launch Vehicle (SLV) and the country’s Nuclear energy programme. He won the young hearts of the country with his simple and inspiring teachings. Some of the books written by him include: Wings of Fire; India 2020; Ignited Minds; The Luminous Sparks; Mission India; Inspiring Thoughts; and Developments in Fluid Mechanics and Space Technology.

He did schooling at the Rameswaram Elementary School. Then he graduated in physics from the St. Joseph’s College, Tiruchirappalli in the year 1954. He did his Aerospace Engineering at the Madras Institute of Technology. In his message on this great loss, Former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh said, “Our country has lost a great human being who made phenomenal contributions to the promotion of self reliance in defence technologies. I worked very closely with Dr. Kalam as Prime Minister and I greatly benefited from his advice as President of our country.

His life and work will be remembered for generations to come.”

On 30 July 2015, the former President was laid to rest at Rameswaram’s Pei Karumbu Ground with full state honours. Over 350,000 people including top political leaders across party lines attended the last rites of the beloved President of the country. His life will always be an inspiration for the country.

JC Graphics receives India’s first rare feat The Vijayawada print shop is the first Indian to receive ISO 12647-2 certification from Heidelberg.

JC Graphics and Heidelberg India marked the occasion by jointly organizing an openhouse to showcase the Speedmaster CD 102 six-colour UV press with coating unit, a recent acquisition by JC Graphics and the first-ever installation in Andhra Pradesh.

Vijayawada’s J C Graphics has been awarded the distinction of being the first Indian print shop to be certified as per ISO – 12647-2(2013 version) Printing standards. The prestigious certification was bestowed

by Heidelberg Druckmaschinen AG, Germany, the leading Offset Printing Press manufacturer in the world, on June 9, at an official event organized at JC Graphics’ Printing unit at Vijayawada. Mr. Klaus Nielsen, Managing Director- Heidelberg India handed the ISO certificate to Mr. Ratnakar Hegde, the Chairman and Founder of JC Graphics.

The ISO12647-2 certification sets the bars high and places higher demands on the excellence of print output. Quality-conscious print buyers are increasingly looking for print providers with ISO certification, which guarantees accountable quality control and consistency.

Vemula Chakrapani, Regional Sales Manager for Telangana Andhra Pradesh said, “JC Graphics expressed interest in ISO certification, at the time of installing the Speedmaster CD 102. Our service team worked towards that goal and achieved prescribed ISO standards.”

Heidelberg conferred the Certification as per ISO 12647–2 standards, after several rigorous rounds of tests on prepress, press and production, including print run on various substrates, dot-gain calibration and consistency of delta-E values. The ISO 12647–2 Certification ensures that there is no compromise

It was a red-letter day for JC Graphics, which kickstarted its business in 1977 by printing Cinema posters, later expanding into the packaging segment.

The three-decade old print shop now specializes in Packaging Printing, Stationary Printing and the Monocarton business in Vijayawada.

Upon receiving the certification, Ratnakar Hegde, commented, “It’s truly overwhelming to be the first print shop in India to receive the printing standard certification as per ISO 12647 -2 (2013 version). The award will reinforce our mission to deliver quality print products to our customers. We appreciate and thank the Heidelberg India team for helping us achieve this remarkable milestone in our print journey”.

Ganesh kumar, Senior Manager of Heidelberg India, and India’s first FOGRA partner and certified colour consultant who worked closely with JC Graphics on this project says, “Achieving the ISO certification is an educational experience. Like any great accomplishment, it entails a lot of hard work. The challenge is to print 4000 sheets, and check every 400th sheet for an array of parameters including Colour Deviation, Tonal Value and Ink Spread.”

The final test results were sent to Heidelberg Druckmaschinen AG, Germany, for evaluation. After meticulous assessment, Heidelberg agreed to issue the certification as per ISO 12647 –2. The ISO 12647-2/7

is equivalent to a “license to print”. The certificate assures that a print shop did produce a proof and print based on PSO or Process Standard Offset, and knows how to do it. It implies that the processes, consumables and equipment have been standardized to PSO requirements.”

On this gracious occasion, JC Graphics and Heidelberg India, jointly organized an open-house to showcase the Speedmaster CD 102 six-colour UV press with coating unit, a recent acquisition by JC Graphics and the first-ever installation in Andhra Pradesh.

The demo included print jobs on various substrates to educate the participants on the prowess of the CD 102. The presentation was

Karunakar Thiyagaraj, J C Graphics, concludes, “The ISO 12647-2 certification is quality assurance to the print buyer. It is a guarantee that the print shop produces quality print products with ISO standards.

In short, it is an authentic authorization to print. We are equally proud of installing the first-ever Heidelberg Speedmaster CD 102 in Andhra Pradesh at our plant in Vijayawada with ISO-12647-2 standards.”

CIP4 announces PrintTalk 1.5 The International Cooperation for the Integration of Processes in Prepress, Press and Postpress (CIP4) organization has announced the release of the PrintTalk 1.5 Schema and Reference Implementation.

PrintTalk is a specification for the exchange of print eCommerce information that is useful for the exchange of data between customer systems, Web-to-print eCommerce systems, and print estimating, scheduling and MIS. Version 1.5 of PrintTalk is tightly integrated with the 1.5 version of JDF that was released several months ago.

First demonstrated in 2000, PrintTalk is an “envelope” for JDF; the business information is PrintTalk, and the product description within is JDF. PrintTalk specifies an automation framework for a myriad of print buying transactions such as requests for estimates, estimates, approvals, etc. The early cooperation with CIP4 ensured that data gathered in the print buying process could be moved forward into production via JDF, thereby directly linking a print buyer’s intent with production, and eliminating the need for re-keying of critical job parameters.

“Extending the convenience and efficiency of automation to the customer is a priority for most printers,” said CIP4 CEO, Henny van Esch. “JDF automates print manufacturing.

PrintTalk then extends the process automation to both the customer and to the supply chain of that service provider.

Smaller printers are requiring that elements of PrintTalk be incorporated into pre-packaged web storefronts, while the larger ones include

Heidelberger Druckmaschinen is one CIP4 member has also made use of PrintTalk to enable their web-to-print solutions: “Prinect, the print shop and media workflow of Heidelberger Druckmaschinen, is based on open industry standards. JDF and PDF are certainly the largest elements”, according to Christopher Berti, vice president, Prinect, Heidelberg. “PrintTalk has also been a valued element of our Prinect solutions since 2002 and is becoming more and more important with the growth of web to print. Whereas JDF helps to automate the production workflow, PrintTalk accelerates the business processes and cash flow”.

PrintTalk 1.5 adds requested capabilities to subscribe to order-status updates, request stock levels, support for multiple JDF

items on the same order (Bill of Materials), and manage percentage calculations on invoices. CIP4 has developed this update to complement JDF 1.5, but PrintTalk is also backward-compatible.

PrintTalk and JDF are the open standards for process automation in the print industry.

They may be freely incorporated by companies or individual developers to meet the needs of today, and provide the flexibility to address future opportunities.

10th Print Summit 2016 The Bombay Master Printers Association has announced its 10th signature conference, Print Summit 2016.

In contrast to the first two cube conferences in 2008 and 2012, the 11-day programme is not organised by target group but rather, based on six key drupa 2016 themes: • Multichannel • Print • Functional Printing • 3D Printing • Package Production • Green Printing.

Each presentation slot will combine various themes using best practise case studies: Functional printing and packaging printing, 3D printing and sustainability, and multichannel including print are some of the combinations being explored. This encourages thinking beyond supposedly fixed boundaries. This outside-the-box principle opens up new possibilities for visitors and broadens the horizon for the future of print.

Through its range of themes and its interdisciplinary concept, drupa cube is, for the first time, also addressing selected vertical markets including the food, consumer goods, interior design, cosmetics, pharmaceutical and healthcare industries; and the financial and public sectors. “In this way, we aim to attract new visitor groups to drupa and inspire them with the possibilities of print,” adds Gelder-mann.

The strategic and creative design of the programme and its imple-mentation were handled by brand experience agency FreemanXP, a division of Freeman, the world’s largest event company. “I am confident that in FreemanXP we have the perfect partner at our side.” Geldermann says. “Thanks to projects they have accomplished for global players like EFI, HP and the U.S. trade fair Graph Expo, FreemanXP has the necessary industry experience. The details of the drupa cube programme are currently being finalised. A provisional programme is expected to be published in autumn at www.drupa.de. Also new at drupa 2016, participation in the cube programme will be free for visitors to drupa, included in the day ticket price of €65 (or €45 for tickets purchased online).

Run-up to drupa 2016 begins Launching the new Heidelberg brand identity at the inauguration of the PMC Commercial also marked the start of its global roll-out.

By the time the drupa trade show is held from May 31 to June 10, 2016, in Düsseldorf, the new branding will have been introduced and implemented worldwide. Globally, the adoption of digital content delivery has had a significant impact on the way people consume news, meaning that in many cases newspapers have had to reinvent themselves and find new and unique ways to connect with and maintain their readers.

Advertisers are exploring new capabilities in direct marketing and digital advertising that are taking them to new media channels.

Newspapers have responded by adopting new technology and designing ways to engage in a more interactive fashion with their readers. Whether through personalized news content, targeted advertising, or blended print and digital strategies, newspapers are finding ways to remain as competitive as ever.

A growing publishing trend today is to use Digital Inkjet printing to add variable and targeted content to traditional Offset printing. These Hybrid Printing approaches are helping many newspapers stabilize circulation and increase revenue in some areas of the business. With high-speed Digital Inkjet printing, publishers are able to produce targeted or versioned issues of papers. These new targeted or personalized papers are more attractive to advertising clients because they strategically reach only the readers who are aligned with their marketing messages.

Powerful Digital Printing solutions give publishers the chance to deliver more value to readers and

advertisers through games, late-breaking news, and localized content. Microzoning—producing different versions of a paper for a highly localized area—offers smaller businesses affordable advertising to their nearby constituency. Targeted ads in a targeted area generate higher response rates for advertisers.

Increased relevance leads to increased interest, which leads to increased circulation.

So how do publishers create Hybrid Digital/ traditional systems? One solution is high-speed Inkjet printheads, like the KODAK PROSPER S-Series Imprinting Systems. They integrate into existing offset production processes, enabling full utilization of existing equipment, while helping drive readership through more interactivity. Kodak’s systems mount inline on an offset press and offer speeds up to 3,000 feet per minute in monochrome or full colour.

Hybrid Printing With Hybrid Digital Printing, newspaper printers can add any number of unique features to traditional newspapers. Features such as images, maps, QR codes, serial numbers, addresses, or versioned ads can be integrated at full production speeds on existing offset presses. These interactive ads can command premiums of 30 percent more than traditional static ads. Gaming applications let newspapers print winning numbers on each copy, driving readers to visit a website or a merchant location to see if they won. Other applications include inserts that contain unique barcodes for the holder to scan at a retail location.

For example, Axel Springer, one of the largest publisher of newspapers and magazines in Germany began using the S30 system for variable

publishing and advertising campaigns in its printed newspapers in 2012. One of its six manroland Colorman newspaper presses has been equipped with this KODAK Imprinting System, which can deliver consistently high quality with 600 x 200 dpi resolution at web speeds approaching 3,000 fpm (almost 50 ft./ sec.). The combination of conventional coldset web-offset and highspeed Inkjet printing means variable data can be imprinted into static content without compromising web-offset productivity. The Prosper S30 Imprinting System is installed in the superstructure of the Colorman press.

This configuration affords flexibility, as one web can be printed by two different towers, depending on the web lead. With this imprinting arrangement, variable elements can be printed on the newspaper’s outer pages as well as on selected inner pages.

Since the system has been set-up, the publisher has run with a versioned advertising promotion, where the 220,000 copies of one of its newspapers were printed with a unique prize code via Inkjet imprint using the Prosper S30. The code was the password to a lottery with a printer as the top prize. Another example is a large-scale campaign run by German newspaper Bild for its Hamburg readers over a period of several weeks. In the Cash Million lottery, tickets bearing a one-off, Inkjet-imprinted number combination were included with the newspaper at the start of the week. Readers were urged to compare their numbers with the daily lucky numbers, with a chance to win cash and other prizes at the end of the campaign. The program was designed to strengthen reader loyalty. A similar prize draw was organized when approximately 35,000 copies of Welt Kompakt were imprinted every day with the Prosper S30 system. An exclusive prize code on the tabloid’s title page held the key to desirable consumer electronics. The promotion was originally supposed to last only two weeks, but the publisher extended it two more weeks due to the campaign’s success.

Another new model that is enabled by Hybrid Printing is the personalization of newspapers. El Mundo, the second largest printed daily newspaper in Spain, has been able to print personalized newspaper runs at the Calprint printing plant in Medina del Campo, Valladolid. Thanks to the KODAK PROSPER S20 Imprinting System, a variable

data printhead has been installed on existing web presses to allow five different editions of the daily newspaper to be printed. With falling readership levels driving demand for shorter print runs, Unidad Editorial, publisher of the El Mundo, Marca and Expansión newspapers, was looking for ways to turn the situation around. It found the answer in Hybrid Printing, which allowed El Mundo to incorporate different promotions and variations in the masthead, as well as on the front page, without having to shut down the press during the daily run.

Above all, what’s most useful to Unidad Editorial is having access to a wide variety of possibilities to personalize promotions, prize drawings, discounts and subscribers’ issues and produce customized advertising dependent on a reader’s district, geographic area or industrial sector. The Hybrid System has also allowed the company to create innovative localized marketing initiatives in order to obtain data from readers and print breaking news without having to stop the press.

In addition to marketing and content, Digital printing also helps in the area of logistics, enabling the printing of barcodes to expedite truck loading and delivery as well as tracking of returned copies.

Across Asia, advertisers and newspaper printing companies have been investing in Hybrid Digital Printing. Starting in 2012, seven newspaper printing companies in China and one of the largest newspaper companies in Japan, Chunichi Newspaper, have invested in KODAK PROSPER S20 Imprinting System.

Malayala Manorama, one of India’s leading newspaper publishers, is modernizing and expanding its printing capacity with new generation presses and mailrooms. Five identical direct printing lines from Muller Martini will ensure a speedy production process from the printing press to the ramp at its four plants in Kozhikode, Kottayam,Kollam and Pathanamthitta (all located in the state of Kerala).

The “Malayala Manorama” daily with a circulation close to 2.3 million copies, is the flagship of the Indian publishing company with the same name, which also publishes more than 40 periodicals/ magazines, runs television channels, FM radio stations, and internet portals.

In addition to the good aftersales support by Muller Martini India, the feedback given by another Indian Muller Martini customer also spoke well of the new solution, Mr. Mathew states: “I enquired at ‘The Hindu’ about their experiences with the Muller Martini systems there and heard only positive reviews from them.”

To enhance its printing capacity, the company, which was established 126 years ago, is installing five double width Diamond Spirit SA newspaper rotary presses from Mitsubishi with a maximum production speed of 75,000 copies per hour, and printing capacity of 40 broadsheet pages, at its four printing plants at Kozhikode, Kottayam, Kollam and Pathanamthitta in the state of Kerala in south India.

“Printed newspapers continue to be the main source of our company’s revenue and that will remain the case for the foreseeable future,” says Chief Editor Mammen Mathew, explaining the major investment.

In order to convey the newspapers smoothly from the printing press to the ramp, Malayala Manorama opted for a total of five identical direct printing lines from Muller Martini. The centerpieces of the state-of-the-art mailroom systems are the latest generation NewsGrip conveyor chains, each with a receiving and delivery station.

They not only have a new control system, but also feature new guide sections, are easier to maintain and have a longer economic lifetime. In addition, the five lines, which will come onstream between December 2014 and December 2015, each include two NewsStack compensating stackers, Solema belts, a Sitma bundle film wrapper with cross strapping, manual application of pre-printed top sheets and a control system for bundle production.

IST UV installations at ABP and HT Media German UV systems manufacturer IST METZ GmbH announced the sale of three UV curing systems to ABP, located in Kolkata, and of one unit to HT Media, located in Mumbai.

The ABP Systems are for their Wifag & Goss Presses and the HT Media’s System will be installed with the Regioman in Mumbai.

The Systems will be handed over by end of August 2015 to start full production at ABP in Kolkata and September 2015 to start full production at HT in Mumbai.

227th GC Meeting of AIFMP takes place at Chandigarh

The 227th Governing Council meeting of the All India Federation of Master Printers’ (AIFMP) was for the first time ever held at the city beautiful – Chandigarh. The meeting had a presence of more than 200 members including 124 GC members with 10 former presidents.

GC meeting was inaugurated on 3rd June by the Governor of Punjab, Haryana and Administrator UT Chandigarh, Prof. Kaptan Singh Solanki. Speaking on the occasion he said that since its inception, All-India Federation of Master Printers had done sterling work to increase the prestige and influence of the printing industry and it renders better and more useful service to the public. He said the society was even bigger than the government which had given recognition to the Printing Industry. He said that printing industry had given direct employment to 25 lakh people and in this respect the industry had paid back to the society. He said, “It is my second interaction with the print leaders, after Hisar in February.

I am delighted to welcome Mr. Dev Nair and his team once again at Chandigarh. Printing is the mother of all inventions and no one can live without print. In the present age of electronic communications there can be some setback to the main stream printing but it is progressing well in packaging and other fields. He praised the working of AIFMP and extended his full support towards the welfare of the industry.

Chopra, Editor-in-Chief, Punjab Kesari group of Newspapers and former President of AIFMP remembered the days when newspapers were printed with letter printing unlike today’s technology enabling matter going directly from computer to plate.

Formed in 1953, All India Federation of Master Printers (AIFMP) is the apex body representing the Indian Printing Industry. It draws its strength from 63 regional affiliate associations spread all over the country having 2.5 lakhs printers.

Mr. Parveen Aggarwal, President Offset Printers’ Association, Ludhiana welcomed the GC members and other guests.

Giving the glimpse of AIFMP and the printing industry of India Mr. Dev Nair, President AIFMP quoted Victor Hugo, “The invention of printing is the greatest event in the history. It is mother of all revolution, a renewal of human means of expression from its very basis. Printed thoughts are everlasting, provided with wings, intangible and indestructible. They soar like a crowd of birds, spread in all four directions and everywhere at the same time.” He told that the Indian Printing Industry, growing at a rate of 12% per annum, comprises more than 250,000 printing companies. The current annual turnover of is more than INR 50,000 crores (USD 11 Billion). India is the country with largest number of printing presses in the world (Europe: 1.18 lakh, China: 1.13 lakh, USA: 50,000, Japan: 45,000, Korea: 42,000 and Australia: 40,000). India with approx. 25 lakh employees is second only to China (30.25 lakh) so far as the number of employees in printing sector is concerned.

Employees and number of printing companies are decreasing by 6 per cent world over, including China, whereas in India it is progressing at 5.2 per cent annually.

The printing industry in India is slowly progressing from the heavy machinery using industry to a more software-centric business.

The Indian printers are today equipped with the latest computer controlled printing machines and flow lines for binding, while state-of-the-art digital technologies are used in pre-press. UV digital printing and inkjet technology are also on the rise in India. The advent of global brands, rising consumerism

and growth of the pharmaceutical industry have seen an increase in the scope for package printing. Giving an optimistic outlook of the industry, the package printing sector is growing at the annual rate of 18 percent, commercial printing at a rate of 4-6 percent and digital printing at robust 30 percent.

The digital printing industry is seeing significant transformations with new technologies & applications providing costeffective and customized solutions. For the foreseeable future, offset and digital will not only co-exist, but will also complement each other- with offset taking the medium-to-longer jobs and digital performing on short-tomedium run lengths. The printing service provider Advance Central Services Michigan (ACSMI) has a lot to do: it is responsible for printing no fewer than 74 publications, mainly from the state of Michigan, such as daily newspapers, magazines and flyers. At its three printing sites, ACSMI offers a complete turnkey printing service, with quality from start to finish. In addition to print services, ACSMI offers a complete suite of creative services, including all forms of print and digital advertising; web development and hosting; all varieties of landing pages; marketing materials, special sections, and other types of multimedia creative. Naturally, the requests and requirements of so many customers are manifold as well as customer-specific. Coordinating and handling them is, therefore, a challenge. ROI is based on the strong integration of all modules (information is only provided once and automatically forwarded to the relevant systems) and the hands-off philosophy of the whole suite.

Additional upgrades in support of customers ACSMI has taken numerous additional steps to ensure it can support the needs of a growing customer base. For instance, to accommodate new business from Gannett, the company had Muller Martini install a 30-head SLS 3000 inserter in its Walker Production Facility, in addition to upgrades at its Ann Arbor and Valley facilities. The

mechanical and electronic components of the Aurosys material handling system in the Grand Rapids facility were upgraded

by Retrotech and Manroland. Web-width reductions at Grand Rapids were instituted

by Manroland, with the assistance of Britton Services. And Ann Arbor Offset had new press controls installed by Harland Simon.

WPCF meeting in Portugal National printing associations from around the globe met in Porto to discuss Print Matters for the Future. The meeting was organised by the World Print and Communication Forum (WPCF) and Intergraf for participants to focus on the future of the industry, latest technological developments, studies and the economic situation in various markets worldwide. On the behalf of All India Federation of Master Printers (AIFMP) Mr. Kamal Chopra, Chairman International Relations participated the meeting on 5th June.

The World Print & Communication Forum (WPCF) is an association created by the world’s major transnational and regional printing associations. The objectives of the WPCF are to form a single global exchange platform for the printing and communication industry between the different players and to stage conferences to analyse market trends and business opportunities.

The main theme of the conference was ‘Print Matters for the Future’, with 50 participants from 23 different countries enjoying a varied programme, the conference was a success and an important edition of an event which is fast becoming a highlight of the year for national printing associations worldwide.

The conference was moderated by President of the WPCF, Michael Makin and President of Intergraf, Francesc Hostench. It was hosted by the Portuguese printing association, APIGRAF and open to all WPCF and Intergraf member associations.

Former Portuguese Minister for the Economy, Professor Augusto Mateus, delivered a keynote presentation on the reindustrialisation of Europe and recent economic developments in Portugal.

Jacques Claude from Gutenberg Networks in France compared digital and print efficacy in marketing, while Sousa Ribeiro from Sistrade delivered a presentation on the practical applications of their digital marketing solutions. Sean Smyth of Smithers Pira, provided a vital overview of the print market.

Olivier Braet from the Free University of Brussels (VUB) presented the findings of a recent study on how much consumers are willing to pay for ebooks.

Emanuele Bandecchi from Rotolito Lombarda in Italy, delivered a case study on how his company weathered changes and changed focus towards digital printing.

Paulo Silva, from Portucel Soporcel deliver details on Portugal’s Think Again and various other campaigns on print outlining the environmental credentials of print and highlighting the innovative marketing campaigns that can be achieved with an effective mix of print and digital technologies.

Mr Chopra from India reported that the Indian printing industry is growing, particularly packaging. Ms Dou reported from China that about 105,000 graphic industry companies employ 3,4 million people. For the printing

industry which has annual growth higher than the GDP growth, export of printed matter is very important, he said.

Korea is the 13th largest economy with 3.5% growth in GDP. The printing industry comprises 17,000 companies employing 70,000 people. Due to the move to digital the number of printing companies has reduced.

Korea with an internet penetration of 98%, has an annual trade volume of 1 trillion USD making it the 7th largest export nation worldwide.

Mr Arruda Mortara reported about the industry in Brazil. Mr Ishibashi presented his report on the Japanese industry. He said, “Paper is considered as a sustainable and environment friendly support with a very good recycling loop. There are no negative attitudes towards paper.”

The worldwide nature of the conference was emphasised by presentations from China, Brazil and Korea. Yang Bin from the Printing Technology Association of China presented a market overview of China while Fabio Arruda Mortara from ABIGRAF, gave an overview of the Brazilian market. Peter Park from the Korean Printers’ Association presented the World Print Congress which will take place under the WPCF banner in Seoul, August 30 September 2nd 2016.

Major retrofit order for EAE German publisher E. Holterdorf has ordered a comprehensive retrofit for the control and automation systems of its newspaper web press, which will also be enhanced with technology from Q.I. Press Controls EAE has enjoyed a long business relationship going back to the eighties with E. Holterdorf, a publisher in North-West Germany. This newspaper and media company, which resides in the small town of Oelde and prints the regional daily called Die Glocke, chose EAE Engineering Automation Electronics GmbH of Ahrensburg to carry out a comprehensive retrofit on its newspaper press. The press in question is a KBA Colora with two four-high towers, three reelstands and one folder which was commissioned in 1996. Since its installation the newspaper press has been equipped EAE control consoles and technology. In addition, since 2009, production planning and pre-settings on the newspaper web press have been managed by an EAE PRINT system.

The drive controls for the towers, reelstands and infeeds are another important item on the retrofit project agenda, along with equipping the press with Q.I. Press Controls’ (QIPC) IDS-3D system for colour control, colour register, fan-out and dampening control as well as mRC-3D for cut-off register control.

The aim of the retrofit project is to ensure the continued reliability of the newspaper press throughout the next decade. The retrofit measures and the press control upgrade will take place as part of a major investment programme, which will also include the replacement of E. Holterdorf’s entire

mailroom technology. The press control retrofit is planned to be carried out this year and the whole project should complete in the first half of 2016.

Holterdorf is placing its trust in us with this large order”, says EAE Managing Director Werner Ringel. “Aside from the actual retrofit, the upgrade with QIPC’s automatic control systems will enable our customer to cut costs and improve product quality. World’s Press condemns journalist killings The World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WAN-IFRA) and the World Editors Forum have condemned the vicious murders of two journalists in India and have called on the Indian authorities to act swiftly to bring the perpetrators to justice.

WAN-IFRA has written to the authorities in Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh states to demand thorough investigations into the killings of Jogendra Singh and Sandeep Kothari, and to call for better protections for press freedom and the safety of journalists.

The brutal murder of Mr Singh on 1 June in Shahjahanpur, Uttar Pradesh, reportedly involved six policemen – accompanied by a mob of 20 people – who beat the journalist before setting fire to him at his home in front of horrified witnesses. After suffering serious burns, Mr Singh died on 8 June.

In a declaration made before a judicial officer shortly before he passed away, the journalist identified his assailants and charged they had carried out the attack on behalf of Ramamurthy Varma, a local government minister. According to local media reports,

the journalist had exposed land grabbing, illegal mining operations and sexual assault on women in Shahjahanpur, and had said evidence pointed to involvement of the minister, local police officials, and criminal gangs. The attackers who poured kerosene oil over him and burned him reportedly said they were teaching him “an extreme lesson”.

According to his lawyer, the journalist had been acquitted in 19 of the 20 cases filed against him. Local media reports have suggested Mr Kothari’s murder was a conspiracy hatched by the ‘mining mafia’ that had come under close scrutiny as a result of his journalistic work.

In conjunction with the development of “full colour printing” based on process colours (CMYK) replacing the old spot colour concept in newspaper production the first ISO newspaper print standard was released in 1998 and improved over time.

The WAN-IFRA generic newspaper ICC print profile “ISOnewspaper26v4.icc” meanwhile is part of hundreds of newspaper print specifications all over. It is included in many software packages that manage the digital production workflow and preflight the colour data delivered by different sources.

In January 2015 the WAN-IFRA World Printers Forum Board decided to intensify working in the area of print standardization in cooperation with newspaper printers worldwide. A new version of the newspaper ICC colour profile was developed and tested by the Swedish Graphic Companies’ Federation in cooperation with WAN-IFRA. This new version adapts the modifications of ISO 12647-3:2013 especially with regard to reduced total ink coverage. The name of the new profile is “WAN-IFRAnewspaper26v5.

Introducing the New Standard Step-by-step methodology to implement the standard For printers attempting standardisation, this article will try to provide a concrete recommendation for the necessary preparatory steps.

Step 1: Quality Control Tools Before implementation of the standard can be started, it should be ensured that all necessary measuring instruments and conditions for measurement are in place.

A basic densitometer should be available at every press control desk in the printing plant. Although the density specifications in the standard are not binding, the density measurement gives the printer basic information about inking and is a solid tool for process control.

At least one advanced spectrophotometer with capacity to measure L*a*b* values and Delta E* colour deviation should be present per printing plant. The advanced equipment can be used by the plant in-charge or quality control executives to evaluate conformance to standardisation and do continuous improvement of the implementation. For plate process control, a plate dot meter is mandatory.

This usually means printers must be trained to use the equipment. A hand-held instrument is recommended here that can be used as a stand-alone device or connected to a computer.

After it has been ensured that all measuring equipment is on hand, it is then possible to begin to standardise the raw material – plate – print production process.

Step 2: Standardising Raw Materials In any manufacturing process, the quality of the produced product depends primarily on the quality of raw materials. In our case, it is newsprint and ink. For newsprint, the main specification is the “newsshade”.

Printers need to ensure that all the brands of newsprint that they use satisfy the shade requirement and are within the tolerance.

Since other parameters are not specified, the German standard DIN 19306-4 can be taken as a reference point. The German standard

specifies most printability and runnability parameters for newsprint like tensile strength, tear resistance, surface roughness, porosity and grammage. All the newsprint brands could be tested for its conformance to DIN 19306-4 and standardised.

For inks, there is a clear quality standard in ISO 2846-2. All the ink brands used in the printing plant must be checked for conformance.

Non-conformity has to be informed to the suppliers and corrected. After establishing the conformance of raw materials, it will be a good idea to periodically check the materials for conformance.

Step 3: Implementing the Standard in the RIP Setting the RIP to ISO standard recommendation is an easy part. For AM screen, ISO 12647-3 has provided clear cut recommendations for dot shape and screen angles.

The tricky part then is the selection of screen ruling and output resolution in CTP, where ISO specifies a range and not a clear cut recommendation.

The choice of screen ruling depends primarily on the paper surface properties.

Finer screen can be selected if the paper surface is smooth. Paper quality has improved overall and most newsprint today can take more than 100 lpi screen ruling. However, it is recommended to do an extensive study before implementing a higher screen. For example, for a certain period of time, only pages of one edition or a supplement can be printed in higher screen and studied. A step wedge with tonal regions from 3% till 95% can be printed along with the edition to analyse the behaviour of highlights and shadow dots. Particularly, the reproduction of 3% and 5% dots in the print has to be studied.

For newspapers attempting standardisation for the first time, 100 lpi could be a good starting point. Higher screen ruling can be tried at a later point after achieving expertise in the standardisation process.

For FM screen, the choice of dot size again depends on the surface characteristics of paper. The ISO recommendation is 40 microns and could be from 30 to 50 microns.

FM screen is tougher to implement. For smaller dots (like 30 to 50 microns), even a slight increase in diameter means a huge increase in its area in terms of percentage.

Hence FM screen will have high dot gain and a steeper dot gain increase curve.

Secondly, even slightest variation in density will have big differences in tone reproduction.

Hence, we would recommend FM screen only for newspapers, that have mastered the standardisation process in AM screen.

The next part is fixing the exposing resolution.

ISO recommends is 1270 dpi and suggests that the CTP resolution should be at least 1000 dpi. The CTP exposing resolution can be fixed with a simple thumb rule.

CTP exposing resolution = 16 x Screen ruling We use 8 bit data in our image workflow. An 8 bit data can produce 256 gray levels. If we need to have all the 256 gray levels in the plate, then we need to expose the plate with a resolution of at least 16 times the screen ruling. For example, for 100 lpi screen ruling, we need to expose at about 1600 dpi to get all the 256 gray levels. Exposing at higher resolution is time consuming.

That is why the recommendation is 1270 dpi.

The Harlequin RIP, which is quite common in newspaper industry, has a feature to generate extra gray levels digitally. The same is true for many other RIP brands as well.

This feature ensures reproduction of all tonal regions in the plate.

For FM screens, there is no such restriction in choosing exposing resolution. In any case, it

is recommended to use 1270 dpi for both AM and FM screen.

Step 4: CTP and Processor Standardisation and Plate Linearization The next step is plate linearization, preceded by fixing optimum laser exposure and maintaining processor conditions as per the recommendations of plate manufacturer.

The plate must be exposed and developed in such a way as to make it suitable for use in long production runs (the target is 150,000 to 200,000 impressions).

Once exposure and processor conditions are set as per plate manufacturer’s recommendation, a nine step wedge plate can be used to assess the dot reproduction by a CTP system.

The test plate contains simple 9 step wedges with dot percentages from 1% till 10% and 10% till 100%. The step wedges are placed in nine different locations in the plate.

Measuring the step wedges will provide a clear idea about the dot reproduction in a CTP. The maximum difference allowed within a plate is ± 1.5%.

Higher differences could be due to inconsistent laser exposure in different areas of the plate or inconsistent pre-heat temperatures or other processor parameters like brush pressures.

If there are multiple CTP units in the printing plant, then similar test have to be made in all the CTP units and the dot reproduction be studied. Since multiple linearization curves are not practically possible for different CTP units in a printing centre, the dot reproduction between the units should be as close as possible and should not exceed ± 1.5%.

Once the dot reproduction of all the CTP units is nearly identical, an average can be taken and the RIP calibrated for linearization.

With the Harlequin RIP, the Calibration Manager provides valuable assistance in

plate linearization. Firstly, an uncalibrated plate is exposed. The uncalibrated plate is measured and the measured values are just input into the RIP and named as a linear curve. When this curve is placed in the appropriate location, the RIP reads into it, understands the dot reproduction of the CTP and calibrates to achieve a linear plate.

A calibrated plate can then be output. Now 50 percent from the file should measure 50 percent on the plate.

Step 5: Achieve 26% Dot Gain in the Press This is where the tough part starts. The dot gain of all the towers in a press has to be evaluated. Do all printing towers behave identically? Is the different dot gain between individual colours sufficiently close together (mid-tone spread)? Can using different ink, different rubber blankets or water additives bring the printing process closer to the specifications of the standard? Of course, all these points are quickly listed in theory, but in practice it represents a protracted adaptation process. Several test prints may be required. For a defined period, it may be useful to print control elements with the newspaper rather than expensive test runs.

The objective should be to approximate the standard as closely as possible with the available mechanical (e.g. rubber blanket, contact pressure, print sequence) and chemical means (e.g. ink, water additives).

In doing so, the main focus should be on the following parameters (in order of priority): paper shade, colours of the primary (CMYK) and secondary (RGB) inks, densities, dot gain and gray balance.

After the existing status has been recorded and all necessary measures taken, it is then time to establish the dot gain of the press.

Another set of test runs has to be made and dot gain of all the colours and towers has to be measured. Ideally, if all the four colours and all the towers have same dot gain, we can then use a single calibration curve. In many cases, we have found that it is difficult to achieve. However, one calibration curve for each of the C, M, Y and K colours is quite possible.

Once averages have been done, we can communicate the existing / actual dot gain in the press and our intended dot gain (ISO provided 26% curve) to the RIP by means of Actual and Intended curve option in its

Calibration manager. The RIP then uses the three curves – Linearisation curve, Actual curve and Intended curve – to calculate the required dot percentages in the plate and do the calibration.

After the calibration, a test print run should then be done to check the calibration. The main objective here is to establish whether the dot gain in print matches the ideal curve.

The intermediate result, such as tonal value on the plate, should be documented, as the adaptation via the three curves means linear results are no longer obtained on the plates. Therefore 50 percent is no longer 50 percent on the plate, perhaps 48 percent or 54 percent, but on the printed paper it should be 76 percent, which corresponds to the standard. These “uneven” values on the plate represent the new reference to be observed within the production plates. Finally for the printer, it does not matter what dot percentages appear in the plate – as long as they are consistent – but only achieving 26% curve in the press matters. At any point of time, if a new calibration is needed, linear plates can be output by simply disabling the Actual and Intended curves in the calibration manager. After changeover, quality and calibration should be checked continuously.

It should be kept in mind that different pressure settings, inks etc. can cause a difference in dot gain. All the changes should be observed, documented, and the process adapted correspondingly.

If there is a change in the CTP or processor parameter, only the plate linearization curve has to be adjusted and the CTP linearized.

The press curves should not be touched.

Step 6: Implement the “WANIFRAnewspaper26V5. icc” Profile Since June 2015, a new ICC profile with revised Total Ink Coverage is available for download from the WANIFRA website. This profile should be used by the agencies, and for news photos.

Foxconn plans to set up 10-12 manufacturing plants Foxconn Technology Group is aiming to create at least a million jobs by setting up 1012 manufacturing facilities across the country by 2020.

Terry Gou on his recent Indian trip hinted that initially Foxconn would set up the

manufacturing plants in five states and expand to other states by 2020.

Heidelberg India recently organized knowledgesharing seminars titled “‘Print, Pack, Fold” in the cities of New Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore. The first of these seminars was held in New Delhi on July 20, and the sessions were successfully repeated in Mumbai and Bangalore, on July 22 and July 24, respectively.

The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from the printing fraternity across India, The speakers focused on productivity & quality control, Packaging Printing solutions, UV solutions and pharma folding.

Mark Christian Hogan, Global Sales Head – Postpress solutions, Heidelberg, announced that Heidelberg’s joint venture with China’s MK Masterwork Machinery would focus on the R&D and production of die cutters and folder gluers such as the Promatrix 106 CS and the Diana.

In essence, Gohl emphasized on using the appropriate type of UV for each application with examples. Brand new perspectives in packaging print The ways the package is printed, to occupy centre-stage at drupa 2016.

Looks count and first impressions matter. How products are judged by their many differing attributes – not least fitness for purpose, consistent reliability and value for money – will determine the extent to which they build market share on an ongoing basis.

Prior to that, however, it will probably be a particular spot colour, a distinctive font, or else the artful application of a metallic ink on the exterior of the pack that initiates the relationship between a brand and a consumer.

“Whilst global players like Unilever and P&G have been specifying these solutions for the past 10 to 15 years, smaller brands are realising there is a cost advantage in that you can control the colours a lot better if you set the right standards.”

It’s not just improvement at the front-end that is raising quality and performance standards in flexo, still the sector’s most widely used print process accounting for over

40% of a current global printed packaging market worth around an estimated €250bn per annum, particularly for flexibles and corrugated board applications. Speed on the press and consistency across substrates are key. Ultimate Packaging has recently installed two additional servo-driven Bobst flexo presses ahead of drupa. Offset has also responded positively to deliver cost-efficient shorter run-lengths, for example Heidelberg’s Speedmaster Prinect Inpress Control inline automated turbo charged system which can change plates between jobs within ten minutes.

Digital mindset What has sparked these improvements in analogue press technology is the increasingly potent challenge posed by digital print; not least in meeting brand owner requirements for cost-efficient shorter run lengths – and thereby, lower inventory levels – and the ability to differentiate products onshelf through customisation. Whilst affordably utilising variable data has always been part and parcel of the digital print proposition, it’s now clearly on the retail marketing radar following its successful adoption by highprofile retail marketing campaigns run by Coca Cola, Heineken, Nutella and a steadily growing band of global blue-chip brands. “To take our brand off the packaging and replace it with something other than the Coca Cola script wasn’t easy to do within a structure like ours, where we operate according to very tight brand guidelines to protecting it,” says Coca Cola Packaging Innovator Greg Bentley. “The digital print capability enabled it to happen, but the marketing campaign is the really smart thing.”

“The combination of technological muscle and marketing inspiration is what it takes to make customisation fly,” says Paul Randall, HP Worldwide Brands Business Development Manager.

“It’s breaking away from the mindset of packaging being the static bearer of logos and ingredients tables and using it as a media opportunity for consumer engagement to the benefit of the brand. The media landscape has changed. It is becoming increasingly fragmented between above the line spend (bought media), PR and below the line (earned media), and packaging (owned media) – with the latter two increasingly linked together. Not surprisingly, brand

owners are now regular visitors to HP’s Graphics Experience Centre in Barcelona.”

Likewise Xeikon’s technology centre in Antwerp. “For brand owners attending our Xeikon Café programme, it’s a two-track learning curve,” says Labels & Packaging Marketing Director, Filip Weymans. “First, understanding how the benefits of digital production can be translated into diversifying communication towards the audience they’re reaching out to and second, how the technology can address needs within their business model - notably, being faster to market and making better use of working capital.”

“While the adoption of digital is an accelerating trend, despite the buzz being created it’s still under-selling its potential,” says SAB Miller Global Packaging Manager, Doug Hutt. “The top ten brand owners in the world are generating over a quarter of a trillion dollars in sales. If just 10 - 20% of these were digitised with the balance going to analogue, that is still a very large potential revenue that converters haven’t yet grasped.”

“FMCG companies should be more proactive in going out and talking to the packaging industry – and the packaging industry should be addressing those issues and coming up with solutions,” says Doug Hutt, SAB Miller Global Packaging Manager.

Meanwhile, faster-running inkjet technology looks poised to dictate the next chapter in the digital packaging print story, not least via the keenly anticipated commercialisation of digital guru Benny Landa’s ‘nanographic’ presses engineered to deliver variable data printed material at offset speeds.

Rather than position an icon on-pack to facilitate interaction, UK-based prepress specialist Reproflex3’s proprietary ‘PackLinc’ scanning technology embeds a hidden code within the ink itself, enabling the consumer to effectively treat the entire pack as a portal. Most recently applied within a limited edition run of the children’s POM-BEAR crisp packet, the system was the recipient of EFIA (European Flexographic Industry Association) and the prestigious Starpack gold awards last year. Debbie Waldron-Hoines, EFIA Director says, “Brand owners need a deeper understanding of the processes so that they can help make considered decisions on what is best suited for their brand. Both flexo and digital can work wonderfully together to enhance the brand.”

Underpinning product security and thereby underpinning brand integrity is another obvious avenue being explored by smart technologies. A fully printed near-field communication sensor tag (NFC) developed

by Thin Film Electronics for Diageo’s Johnnie Walker whisky doubles as a security and anticounterfeiting device as well as interacting with smartphones to dispense product advice and information.

The finishing touch

Customisation is not the only route to catching the consumer’s eye on-shelf. Shortrun, cost-effective special effects such as high gloss, glitter, metallic without recourse to hot-foil stamping and even Braille are also within the remit of next-generation digital post-press enhancement technology now establishing itself within the finishing sector.

Also providing a more cost-effective means of achieving greater stand-out is the take-up of cold foiling using the analogue process - notably as an alternative to laminated / metallised substrates for labels and cartons.

“The adoption of online-oriented technologies is pointing the way towards next generation applications aimed at facilitating greater engagement between brand and consumer,” says Sun Branding Solutions Packaging Technology Director, Gillian Garside-Wight. “Who would have thought that the Apple watch would be available five years ago? Brand owners need to deliver what consumers want including smarter packs that integrate with a digitally driven smarter life-style.”

Meanwhile, at the higher end of the scale is the arresting 3D effect achieved through the use of Fresnel lens technology providing instant ‘stand-out’ in retail duty-free for cartons containing the global gin brand Bombay Sapphire. “It’s obviously more expensive than a normal foil by about one-third, but you do get significantly greater impact. If you want something that is undeniably eye-catching and alluring then that’s what it takes,” says Dominic Burke, Webb deVlam UK Managing Director.

Quite a number of applications on the market bring into play mobile technology.

For example, on-pack augmented reality (AR) applications pioneered by Blippar that allow users to simply look at an object through the camera on their smartphone to activate an instantaneous digital search and draw down information from the web. In a recent campaign for Perrier, the invitation to consumers to shake their phone like a cocktail shaker to reveal a recipe was a typically innovative way to highlight the overall concept and add fun by using the technology to unique advantage.

As a lot of the labelling and pre-printed information currently required to be displayed on-pack is gradually phased out, just imagine the potential for branding afforded by that freed-up real estate. Brands are currently getting maybe only 40% of the pack’s surface for its primary purpose. However, if one small interactive barcode resolves all the regulatory and legal requirements 90% of the print surface could be released for marketing the product.

“Ironically, the most practical bridge linking brand and consumer might simply entail upgrading the humble linear barcode into a 2D format,” says Domino Printing Sciences Global Account Manager, Craig Stobie.

“Brand owners are yet to fully realise the potential in having a machine-readable code that not only contains a lot more data but with the same footprint or smaller than a humanreadable, but can also actually be cheaper.”

“Whether it be products that communicate with your tablet or temperature or time sensitive thermochromic inks that indicate when your lager is perfectly chilled or provide the re-assurance that

pre-packaged meat is safe to eat, the facility for interactivity ticks all the right boxes for forward-looking brand owners,” says Eef de Ferrante, Managing Director of the Active & Intelligent Packaging Industry Association (AIPIA).

“Brand owners need to meet the challenges faced by counterfeiting, product security in the supply chain, consumer engagement and ‘Big Data’ management. Brand protection and better marketing of their products are major starting points towards averting potential reputational damage and simply saving money.”

Eye-catching and innovative printed packaging is a shrewd investment towards building a loyal and enduring customer-base, concludes Des King. Whilst consumers are exercising greater versatility than ever before in choosing how and where they are able to gather information through which to determine product preferences, packaging offers the brand owner a uniquely guaranteed opportunity to control how they communicate with prospective customers face to face in-store at the very point of purchase. No surprise then that the ways in which the package is printed will occupy centre-stage at drupa 2016.

Executive summary Printed packaging is the key mechanism enabling brand owners to build expanding and enduring customer loyalty in order to out-sell and out-perform their competition.

Changing patterns of communication have elevated the role of packaging from protective wrapper to front-line sales & marketing tool. In a media-neutral environment it’s a function that is increasingly as much marketing as technology, and that provides the brand owner with guaranteed profiling and exposure in front of the consumer.

In order to optimise consumer response at the point of sale, brand owners will want to invest not only in imaginative, innovative and well-executed creative design in order to achieve distinction and differentiation, but also in the appropriate colour management technologies to ensure its accurate replication irrespective of substrate or geographical location.

The latest developments in web-based workflow platforms and systems that link all components within the packaging print supply chain will be on show at drupa 2016.

Whilst a consistently reproduced and instantly recognisable image is vital in underpinning authenticity, brand owners are increasingly required to be able to demonstrate rapid response agility in order to maintain competitive edge via updated printed messaging and as these tactics are often short-term and invariably short-run, as cost-effectively as possible. The same level of expediency applies to the introduction of brand extensions and new products.

Enhanced analogue process print and next-generation digital equipment designed to deliver accelerated cost-effective time to market will compete for attention at drupa 2016.

Special decorative effects and added functionality are increasingly providing an added value finishing touch that can extend beyond the point of purchase to enhance the consumer’s relationship with the branding proposition throughout its life expectancy.

The appropriate systems and solutions to accomplish all of these imperatives are not only readily available to print service providers but are constantly updated and extended. Applications to facilitate the synergy between printed text and graphics, the internet and social media through the development of on-pack interactivity accessed by smart mobile technology will constitute a growing area of visitor interest in Dϋsseldorf.

Sydney launches world’s first e-paper traffic signs To see road traffic information on the go, drivers in Sydney can now rely on unique electronic paper signs optimized for road traffic launched by Australia’s Road and Maritime Services.

Before self-driving cars hit the market, there is still some room to improve the car commute. To better the driving experience, apps are already announcing traffic updates and suggesting alternative, congestion-free routes to drivers, with some electronic road signs functioning in a similar way.

To improve daily transit and simplify road sign deployment, the Australian Road and Maritime Services (RMS) has installed e-paper traffic signs on Sydney roads, representing the first time that electronic

These new models enhance Epson’s dyesublimation line-up by offering customers the chance to expand their production capabilities. Both the SC-F7200 and SCF6200 are capable of producing high-quality printed textiles, such as clothing, sportswear and home textiles, and also offer the flexibility needed to sublimate onto a range of hard substrates, the SC-F6200 is ideally suited to this application. Ideal for companies producing promotional goods, the printer can be used to sublimate onto tailored goods,

including mugs and phone and tablet covers.

The SC-F7200 prints on transfer papers up to 64 inches (1.6m) in width, and at speeds of around 58.9 square metres per hour, while the SC-F6200 can take materials of up to 44 inches (1.1m) in width at speeds of up to 63.4 square metres per hour. The devices can print on clothing, home materials and hard substrates and are capable of printing at resolution up to 720 x 1,400dpi.

Epson has made a new addition – a high density HDK Black Ink to its UltraChrome DS ink range. The new black ink will offer textile customers better quality denser blacks on fabrics. Also the new SC-F6200 will open newer avenues for photographic print providers with its capability to print on versatile substrates including metal and wood.
