Kodak’s heritage of giving comes full circle with “Print for Good” efforts Employees support local community and celebrate founder’s philanthropic legacy. On July 12, Kodak employees celebrated the 163rd birthday of their founder, George Eastman with an event supporting his philosophy and philanthropy through the company’s ‘Print for Good’ programme. This global initiative supports communities throughout America, Europe, Asia and the Middle East with book drives, book donations, and the printing of materials and supplies in an effort to increase literacy worldwide through print.
“An investment in literacy is an investment in the future; and every dollar that’s spent on adult literacy provides society with a return of $7.14, enabling individuals to help themselves, their families and their communities. We feel that print is and will continue to be a critical piece of that solution.” Brad Kruchten

The Rochester event is part of a month-long book drive where Kodak employees and Eastman Business Park tenants have been asked to donate new or gently used books in support of local literacy programs focused on high-needs neighborhoods and schools. This year’s contributions will be donated to the Urban League of Rochester and the Scott Spino Foundation. Kodak’s ‘Print for Good’ initiative is an overall effort to drive the print industry in a socially conscious and environmentally friendly way, including the development and use of more sustainable print processes. “Print for Good is about ensuring that print is around for the long term, that it’s driving value, and that it’s doing good in the world,” said Brad Kruchten,
President – Print Systems Division and SVP, Kodak. “Literacy is a venue for us to talk about the value of print in a very tangible way, while partnering with some of our most important printers to address this huge issue across the globe.” “In middle-class communities, there is an estimated 15 books per child. However, in underdeveloped or impoverished areas, there’s only about one book per 300 children,” Kruchten adds. “An investment in literacy is an investment in the future; and every dollar that’s spent on adult literacy provides society with a return of $7.14, enabling individuals to help themselves, their families and their communities. We feel that print is and will continue to be a critical piece of that solution.” This latest event in Kodak’s Print for Good campaign follows several activations that have occurred worldwide, including: • Houston, TX – Kodak partnered with its customer DiscPro to host a book drive. In addition, Kodak purchased and donated books by Tad Carpenter (host of Kodak’s Press On video series and children’s book author) to benefit high-needs Houston schools and communities, as well as an orphanage in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Kodak teams up with India’s Youth For People and Aroehan to improve education outcomes for children in Mokhada schools Kodak’s support for this important program in 2017 is part of the company’s Print For Good initiative which is focused on promoting literacy around
The foundation of every prosperous society is built on educating our youth. For the vast majority of children in India, who attend government-run primary schools in rural areas, access to basic resources, like school supplies, is a challenge that impacts learning outcomes and the quality of education. To help combat this problem, Kodak has teamed up with India’s Youth for People and Aroehan, two local NGOs, to deliver 5,000 notebooks to children across schools in Mokhada in rural Maharashtra. Youth for People began its Notebook Donation program in 2014 to address the lack of affordable blank notebooks for school children in this rural community. In its first year, Youth for People and Aroehan delivered 65,000 notebooks to 10,000 children in 50 schools. In 2016, the program’s success expanded to 200,000 notebooks in 300 schools for 40,000 children.

Kodak’s culture of giving dates back to our founder, George Eastman (1854-1932), inventor, entrepreneur and philanthropist. In the early 1900s, Eastman was one of the richest men in the world and one of the four largest donors in history to that point. By his death, he would give away approximately $2 billion of his wealth to charitable causes (as measured in today’s dollars). Kodak’s Print for Good campaign builds on this heritage by giving back and supporting the communities where we operate through meaningful programs. Kodak’s legacy in India dates back to 1913 when it became the first photographic company to set up operations in India. Over the past 100 years, Kodak has been an integral part of millions of Indian’s memories from family moments captured on Kodak film or watching your favourite Bollywood motion picture shot with Kodak film stock. Even today, thousands of photo studios across India continue to hang Kodak branded balloons outside their store. Though Kodak has mostly been known for its historic role in photography, today’s Kodak is a technology company focused on imaging. It provides directly and through partnerships with other innovative companies - hardware, software, consumables and services to customers in graphic arts, commercial print, publishing, packaging, electronic displays, entertainment and commercial films, and consumer products markets.
Eastman’s philanthropic spirit is deeply ingrained into the corporate culture at Kodak. The company and its employees have supported local Kodak communities for over a century. Kodak’s aim is to continue this legacy by putting programs into place such as Print for Gooddesigned to help communities build lasting benefits that can be felt by all.

Ergonomic stacking of folded sheets with Polar Transomat TRE Can also be used to optimize one-person operation on the Heidelberg Stahlfolder TX 96 - simplifying the stacking of the folded sheets and ensuring the performance of the folding system. Positioned directly on the folding machine delivery unit of the Stahlfolder TX 96 folding system, the Transomat unloader ensures consistently high production performance on the folding machine. The operator removes the stack of folded sheets from the delivery unit and manually pushes the stack onto the Transomat pallet without having to lift the stack. This is not only much faster, it also relieves the burden on the operator. The stacked signatures are then placed on the pallet automatically – layer by layer.
Transomat unloader can also be used to optimize one-person operation on the Heidelberg Stahlfolder TX 96. This not only simplifies the stacking of the folded sheets, it also ensures the performance of the folding system.
Key Notes : > Positioned directly on the folding machine delivery unit of the Stahlfolder TX 96 folding system. > Consistent high production performance on the folding machine. > Enabling the productivity of the cutting machine to be increased by up to 50%.

July 2017
Up to now, the Transomat unloader has been known as part of a cutting system enabling the productivity of the cutting machine to be increased by up to 50%. However, a wide range of applications are possible. For example, the Transomat unloader can also be used to optimize one-person operation on the Heidelberg Stahlfolder TX 96. This not only simplifies the stacking of the folded sheets, it also ensures the performance of the folding system. The stacked folded sheets come out of the folding machine and just need to be pushed onto the Transomat pallet on level and arranged there. Placement on the pallet is then carried out automatically layer by layer. At a moderate machine speed of 110 m/min, this enables the operator to process more than 18,000 sheets per hour with ease.
POLAR Transomat unloader TRE The Transomat TRE simplifies unloading of the high-speed cutter or folding machine and optimizes
the entire workflow. The products do not have to be placed by hand - an arduous step - and are instead simply pushed onto the Transomat transport pallet. The Transomat then automatically places the material on a pallet. At the same time, the operator can continue to work, which significantly increases the capacity of the upstream machine. Thanks to a format setting that can be made in a matter of seconds on a scale, the setup times are minimal. Work is far more ergonomic because the operator does not have to lift the material.
Heidelberg Stahlfolder TX 96 The Heidelberg Stahlfolder TX 96 stands for maximum productivity during folding. The folding system combines two principles to increase performance: oblong format processing and shingled folding. With this innovative concept, 18,000 sheets/h can be processed at a low machine speed and thus maximum process reliability. The result is a completely new level of performance in the industrial folding of signatures. When combined with the palamides alpha 700 hd stack delivery and automatic stacking with the Polar Transomat TRE, the Stahlfolder TX 96 can be operated by just one person. The recipe for success in the Stahlfolder TX 96 is therefore: an increase in performance at the same machine speed thanks to shingled folding and oblong format processing. This raises the performance of the folding machine to the same level as that of the printing machine.

Flint Group launches XCURA EVO - the new generation UV LED Sheetfed Process Ink. Flint Group has globally launched its latest version UV LED process inks, XCURA EVO. “EVO is short for evolutionary,” explains Trevor Amps, Global Product Management Director for Energy Curing inks. “This signals a step change from our world renowned XCURA formulations which, for the past four years, have served our customers very well as an industry leader. XCURA EVO is our next generation offer to the UV LED and low energy sheetfed market, and we are very pleased to announce its global launch today.” “More and more sheetfed press manufacturers are heading their technology development with LED and low energy curing, and we see growing numbers of retro-fit conversions from lamp providers and OEMs as well,” stated Mr Amps. “Some of the main drivers encouraging commercial printers to switch to UV LED are improved efficiency, reduced energy costs and the ability to break into new markets. XCURA EVO helps to maximise all of these with its excellent flow characteristic, superb
transfer and high gloss.” Based on the new and unique energy curing Platform Technology that premiered in May 2017 with UltraCURA Sens Low Migration process inks and bases, XCURA EVO is created out of the new advanced resin technology system, which delivers increased stability and performance consistency. “We’re very pleased with the number of improvements we’ve achieved with “Platform Technology,” revealed Dario Zarantoniello, UV Inks and Coatings Technical Manager who managed field trials of the new inks. “We tested EVO on all the main presses and many formats, straight and perfecting, with and without IPA, highest production speeds and quality standards and we drew critical comparisons against our existing products and all of our main competitors. The customers noted better gloss levels,
exceptional colour strength and sharper dots. They also commented on much better stability, as production speeds increased, offering tangible efficiency benefits.” “XCURA EVO is the second global launch this year to be created with these unique formulations,” Mr Amps says. “As well as all the improvements Dario just mentioned, one more main impact from EVO is the low waste generated thanks to excellent transfer properties on all substrates. Add to this the fact that all Flint Group sheetfed energy curing products are compliant with current raw material exclusion lists, National and International regulations and manufacturing best practice, as laid down by advisory bodies, such as the European Printing Ink Association (EuPIA), and the result is a very positive, sustainable product offering in our latest energy curing product range. Considering we are the only manufacturer offering just one product for both UV LED and the low energy systems, I think we’ve come up with an excellent new product that will prove to be a real winner.”

Vijayawada’s JC Graphics installs MK Easymatrix 106CS DieCutter from Heidelberg manual re-positioning of tools for each production run. “The price-performance ratio is excellent. Faster make-ready times, non-stop processing and efficient operations lead to cost-effective and improved productivity. After-sales support from Heidelberg for Easymatrix is the high point,” Karunakar comments on the latest acquisition that complements his state-of-the-art press portfolio, which includes an ISO12647-2certified Heidelberg Speedmaster CD 102.
Vijayawada’s JC Graphics reaffirmed its trust in Heidelberg, by installing a MK Easymatrix 106CS Die-Cutter. The MK Easymatrix 106CS, an automatic die-cutter to meets the precise requirement of JC Graphics, which specializes in Packaging & commercial Printing, Stationery Printing and the Monocarton business. “We believe that we share the same values as Heidelberg, like commitment to quality printing. So, we keep coming back for more,” smiles Karunakar, the Managing Director of J C Graphics.
Motorized cutting pressure adjustment for up to 260 tons, helps the Easymatrix 106CS perform die-cutting and embossing operations at a speed of 7,700 with thickness ranging from 0.1 mm to 2 mm and corrugated board up to 4mm without any changes in the feeder. Other impressive features include non-stop rake delivery for uninterrupted production during pile changes and a Quick-Lock system to increase the speed and accuracy of the die-cutting process. The quick-Lock system ensures rapid and precise positioning of tools on the stripping frame, eliminating time-consuming,
“The Easymatrix 106CS is also a value addition for commercial printers looking to bring die-cutting and embossing operations in-house, instead of outsourcing these activities. The die-cutter can process highquality foil, plastic and cardboard substrates with ease,” adds Lalitkumar, Product Manager, Postpress Packaging Solutions, Heidelberg India. “As we relentlessly strive to enhance our print offerings and customer experience, investing in the right technologies becomes imperative. Heidelberg is the brand we continue to lean on for innovative and insight driven technologies,” concludes Karunakar.

Q.I. Press Controls and The Printers House celebrate successful long-standing partnership For fifteen years that Q.I. Press Controls - Engineering Automation Electronics (QIPC-EAE) has been active in India, The Printers House (TPH) has been one of its longest standing partners. QIPC-EAE, specialist in measurement and control systems for the printing industry, and TPH, an Indian constructor of printing presses, recently celebrated their longstranding partnership. To mark the occasion, TPH was presented with a commemorative figure by QIPC-EAE. The presentation provided a fitting moment to reflect on the achievements of the past years. “TPH has always given us stalwart support in India,” Vijay Pandya, managing director of QIPC-EAE India, eulogises. “At trade fairs, for example, they’ve allowed us to demonstrate our automation systems on their presses. What’s more, they’ve always put in a good word for QIPC-EAE among their customers.” L.K. Sharma, the CEO of TPH underlined: “We have a very special working relationship with QIPC-EAE. In the beginning, the collaboration of course, was with QIPC, with the later addition of the newly acquired EAE. Our job was to build bridges between the needs of typical Indian customers and QIPC-EAE. We have always tried to convince clients of the quality inspections carried out

us has been our continued ability to provide reliable quality, whilst at the same time reducing operational costs for our clients,” adds L.K. Sharma.
QIPC - Reliability at an affordable price
Both companies are full of confidence looking towards the future. “Trust is an important basis for sustaining an intensive collaboration such as the one between QIPC-EAE and TPH,” muses L.K. Sharma. “That trust is enshrined in a reliable product, optimum costs for the user and excellent after-service support. Furthermore, the constant quest for product improvements plays a vital role.” Vijay Pandya agrees: “You have to have a good understanding of each other’s products. In addition, there must be mutual respect and trust, from senior management level right down to the shop floor. Last but not least, you have to be ready and willing to respond to the needs of clients and innovate together. Our relationship has been built in this fashion and we both see a bright future together.”
Vijay Pandya makes reference to several of the projects that QIPC-EAE has carried out with TPH - both inside and outside India - which give him abiding satisfaction. “For example, our installation at the National Media Group in Kuwait, the largest printing press that TPH has ever sold, complete with our automation systems. There have also been numerous installations at Lokmat Publications, as well as the system we installed on the seven-tower TPH Orient 45000 at Amar Ujala. There have been more recent projects too, such as for Deshabhimani, with the installation of our automation systems on TPH’s Orient 36000 and 50000 presses.” L.K. Sharma, like Vijay Pandya, can also look back with immense satisfaction at the fully automated installation at Punch Nigeria Ltd in Nigeria. “Nevertheless, the key highlight for both of

Magazines, printed in sheetfed offset, heatset or gravure
Printing higher-value products and periodicals has become a global trend. From Canada to Australia, newspaper printers are bringing the production of magazines into their portfolio. So it was only logical to include magazines in the Color Quality Club as well. Registration is now open for the next session, International Color Quality Club 2018–2020. Early registrants benefit from a free PreCheck in the autumn of this year. Publications from Belgium, Brazil, Colombo, Finland, Germany, Malaysia and Panama are already registered. The biennial WAN-IFRA International Color Quality Club is the only worldwide newspaper and magazine print quality competition. It is based on objective measurement and the
judgement of international industry experts. ISO printing standards are the foundation of the evaluation. The next test period will run under the motto “Fly higher by proving your great color printing” through March 2018. Results will be announced in June, and club members will be honoured in October 2018 at the IFRA World Publishing Expo in Berlin.

1st imagePRESS C8000VP: Complementing Avantika’s ‘Mix & Match’ expertise Avantika Printers of Delhi has installed the Canon imagePRESS C8000V. Their faith in Canon continues for the quality and service they have been getting from Canon. Canon and M N Pandey have written an ideal success story for Avantika Printers of Delhi. The story has various milestones like the Canon imagePRESS C7000VP, then a C7010VP, then another C7010VP, then a C800VP and finally a C8000VP – all got installed at Avantika to answer to the diverse printing demands of the Delhi & NCR region. The more recent C8000VP got installed in May 2017.
The C8000VP is not only printing deep textured images but also doing long print at Avantika. They are now able to shift production for large volume jobs between different machines; there are no quality variations. Besides, they have been able to narrow the quality variation between samples as well as print products.
Key Notes : > imagePRESS C8000VP - combining exceptional quality, productivity and versatility at 80 ppm. > The opted Fiery Graphics Arts Package – Premium Edition includes automatic preflight, GA filters for hot folders/virtual printers, and ImageViewer. > EFI Fiery certification enables Avantika save up to 50% time in many routine processes.

July 2017
According to Canon, the imagePRESS C8000VP takes Digital colour printing to the next level, combining exceptional quality, productivity and versatility at 80 ppm across a vast variety of applications. The digital press is capable of printing across an extensive range of media up to 350 gsm. “The C8000VP comes fully loaded with the EFI B4000 Fiery server, where we have opted for the Fiery Graphics Arts Package – Premium Edition. The package includes automatic preflight, GA filters for hot folders/virtual printers, and ImageViewer,” says Himanshu Pandey of Avantika Printers. Though they have produced with and run various other machines like Xerox, Konica Minolta and Ricoh; Canon for Avantika means durability and service. M N Pandey says, “For us, Canon is the best equipment – they have the best Digital Printing machines available in the market. Since the investment in the latest technologies today is substantial, we believe the quality of equipment must be the best. Hence we never compromise on that. Canon is just in line with our this belief.”
A Canon for a Canon Avantika was well on the threshold of upgrading their existing imagePRESS C7010VP when Pandey looked for various options available for a state-of-the-art Digital press. “Since the latest machine we had had already completed five years, it became necessary to induct another latest machine to lead our fleet,” shares Pandey. He believes that for machine like this, five years is the perfect time to upgrade or replace. Though their C7010VP hadn’t been run to its full capacity, yet, according to Pandey, its optimum working life had been passed. The changing market demands and quality upgrade was what pushed the decision at Avantika Printers to install a Canon imagePRESS C8000VP.
With the earlier technologies installed at Avantika, it was not possible to carry out certain special jobs like textured printing and long printing. “Though we started textured printing with our C800 but still doing heavy textured printing wasn’t possible,” reveals Pandey. Now, with C8000VP, they are not only printing deep textured images but also long print. It was also not possible for them to shift production for large volume jobs between different machines, because of quality variations. With their latest high capacity imagePRESS, they have been able to further narrow the quality variation between samples as well as print products. Moreover, now enabled by EFI, the Ripping time at Avantika has also been substantially reduced. This too has helped in more efficient operations at the company, which is today a one-stop shop for customers’ complete print related demands. It had relocated to Okhla about a year ago. With the production in full swing, the new facility brings all its operations under a single roof. All departments of Avantika now have separate floors.

What makes Avantika unique... Obviously, Avantika is a preferred shop for its customers. It has reached a great height in quality printing, to a greater extent, by Pandey’s knack for sorting complex practical problems of print production. Many a times he is doing difficult jobs that are turned down by some other printers. He also educates fellow printers, should they ever come to him with their problems. As a bonus, the customers who get their stuck jobs through at Avantika, never leave Avantika. They are an expert at ‘mix & match’. The final products that Avantika produces have a tint of subtle expert touches that make their products unique. They have mastered their technique; and this is what makes them unique. Around 35 percent of the business is contributed by publishing related printing at Avantika. They do job works that come to around 10-15 percent of the total volumes. Rest 50 percent are from commercial, Offset and other products that also include outsourced printing jobs. Over the years, Pandey has put special emphasis on finishing & converting part of their products. “We are a failure if we have vast printing capabilities but don’t have a matching finishing capacity,” he states. Consequently, he has invested in various finishing, converting equipment, chiefly for books finishing. These include die-cutting, three-knife cutting, hard binding, foiling, laminating, UV coating, screen printing, Perfect Binding and PUR – both open and close type – machines. “I have taken care of managing our operations towards perfection. When you do this, you get the quality as you can also handle quantity and timely deliveries,” continues Pandey.
cost management at Avantika. In his own words, “We are in a time bound trade. Once we are able to save time with same or better quality, we are ultimately cutting costs for our business. This is how the EFI Fiery certification has helped me. It would be unbelievable for a layman if I tell him that I have saved as much as 50% of time in many routine processes. In some cases it has been far more too!” The next step in technology adoption for Avantika is streamlining processes towards automation. “We have been doing our estimation, costing, quoting, pricing etc. as per traditional methods. Now that things have settled down on machine and infrastructure set up, we are looking forward towards streamlining of processes through efficient Management Information System (MIS). We shall be going for the one which will particularly suit our demands,” concludes Mr. Pandey.
Avantika is also planning to launch its range of stationery products. It will be utilising the spare capacity during the lean period between May and July. Speaking on the occasion of the installation of the first imagePRESS C8000VP in India, Puneet Datta, Director, Canon India observes, “The imagePRESS C10000VP has proven itself to grow the print volumes of our customers by up to three times upon upgrade to our Color Digital Press. This has been possible due to the new technologies that have been incorporated in the system that help deliver exceptional quality, high productivity and great colour consistency. However, there are PSPs who don’t necessarily need the 100ppm speed, but are looking for a press that will still provide the same high quality, reliability, consistency and media handling of the C10000VP; for those PSPs, the C8000VP is the answer.”
Customers of Avantika are usually from Delhi and NCR region. It also has customers from other parts of the country who usually get their printing demands pertaining to the region met by Avantika. Himanshu, Pandey’s son has received certification from EFI on Fiery. He now uses his Fiery to optimum use. Having learned various combinations, values, inputs, adjustments and formula etc., he is now handling files for various quality related standards, colour specifications, machine control, calibration and many such things which ultimately have helped him in efficient

Xerox celebrates an innovation that transformed business communications Xerox history, it routinely generated more than $1 billion in annual revenues. It’s likely that most North American households were touched by it. In the decade after its release, the 9700 was the printing press of choice to print bills and statements for credit cards, banks and utilities. It led the market for high-speed, high-volume production of other types of documents that use transactional data as well, including insurance policies and investment reports. “The laser printer is arguably the greatest invention made in a Xerox research center,” said Steve Hoover, chief technology officer, Xerox Corporation. “The 9700 was the first in a long line of iconic products that were made possible by Gary Starkweather’s invention, including DocuTech and today’s iGen family.” In 1969, in his lab in Webster, N.Y., Xerox engineer Gary Starkweather was challenged with improving the speed of an early fax machine. His research led to an invention of laser printing, which profoundly changed how people and businesses communicate around the world. Forty years ago, the launch of the Xerox 9700 – the company’s first commercial laser printer – gave rise to the digital printing industry, which today generates more than $120 billion in global annual revenues, according to Smithers Pira; the 9700 also transformed office printing with generations of laser printers and multifunction devices using the technology. Last year, KeyPoint Intelligence cited the 9700 as the product that heralded the third wave of industrial automation (computerdriven printers) after steam-powered presses in the early 1800s and electric-powered presses later that century. “The Xerox 9700 helped usher in the wave of computer-driven automation in the 1970s that transformed offices, data centers, copy departments, and ultimately, the printing industry around the world,” said Jeff Hayes, managing director, KeyPoint Intelligence. “Much of how we communicate in hard copy today can be traced back to this remarkable product.” As one of the most successful products in

The 9700 was retired on the last day of 1997, ending 20 years of market leadership, however, many of the 9700’s advanced capabilities remain relevant today, including: - Printing at speeds as fast as 120 pages per minute; - Automatic two-sided printing; - Cut-sheet paper; - Standard resolution of 300 dpi; and - Ability to print graphics. The 9700 also paved the way for variable information printing by personalizing each document in a production run. The machine also could be outfitted with Magnetic Ink Character Recognition (MICR) toner for printing checks.
After inventing laser printing technology, Starkweather transferred to the then new Xerox Palo Alto Research Center (PARC) in Palo Alto, Calif., where he built a prototype laser printer that proved to be robust and reliable while serving as PARC’s office printer for several years. Subsequently, it provided the core technology for the 9700. In recognition of that invention, Starkweather was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2012. Today, he is retired and living in Lake Mary, Fla. Looking back, he says he knew his invention would have a significant impact, but was less clear at the time about how it would play out. “A real question was raised at the time about the future of paper and how the printer would survive into the future with people using novel displays and so on,” Starkweather said. “Some 40 years later, laser printers are still going strong.” The laser printing innovation continues today with the recent launch of 29 new Xerox ConnectKey®-enabled printers and multifunction devices, which offer on-the-go capabilities, cloud connectivity, and access to productivity boosting features and apps. The family of products includes a variety of sizes, speeds and capabilities to match the needs of small- and medium-sized businesses as well as large enterprises – and at the heart of ConnectKey devices is the laser technology Xerox invented 40 years ago.

Labelexpo 2017: Gallus in the fast lane Gallus launches a new platform concept and further digital innovations.
Swiss full-range supplier Gallus, a subsidiary of Heidelberg, will be exhibiting under the banner “Speed up for Success” this year. At Labelexpo the spotlight will be firmly trained on its new Gallus Labelmaster and Gallus Labelfire machine systems alongside the latest offerings from Gallus Services and Gallus Screen Printing.
Maximum flexibility with Gallus Labelmaster and Labelmaster Advanced Gallus Screeny will impressively demonstrate at Labelexpo 2017 that rotary screen printing speed no longer needs to be a limiting factor in label printing.
Key Notes : > Exhibiting under the banner “Speed up for Success”. > To unveil the Gallus Labelmaster Advanced line with multiweb feature. > Focusing reduced throughput times with Labelfire.
Hot on the heels of the successful debut of the Gallus Labelmaster during the Gallus Innovation Days in September 2016, Gallus is now set to unveil the Gallus Labelmaster Advanced line with multiweb feature at Labelexpo 2017 in Brussels. The basic versions of this label printing press will also be on display. The Gallus Labelmaster Advanced line’s impressive modular design combines maximum flexibility with a high level of automation. The new press offers label printers a wide variety of processes, as the various finishing and printing units can be changed quickly and easily at any machine position. All Gallus Labelmaster presses share the same special platform design and can be configured to meet the customer’s specific requirements. With its open interfaces, this machine series represents a highly secure investment and enables users to respond flexibly to future changes in the market. In the new platform system, the Gallus Labelmaster

is made up of modules each comprising two printing units. These modules are available in three different variants. The basic variant already covers the essential label printing standards. The Plus version provides enhanced flexibility to cover many applications in the label industry, and the Advanced line can meet most requirements and be configured to include as much or as little automation as necessary. By offering this modular system, Gallus is ensuring that label printers can satisfy prevailing market requirements and always remain fit for the future – all for a level of investment that would previously have been inconceivable for premium products. The new Gallus Labelmaster features a special platform design and can be configured by customers to meet their own specific requirements. The new Gallus Labelmaster machine platform boasts a whole series of product highlights, such as an extremely short web path of just 1.4 m between printing units and a high maximum speed of 200 m/ min, thus making the Gallus Labelmaster the fastest label printing press that Gallus has ever produced. The press can be controlled centrally via an HMI touch panel, although manual intervention is also supported, with operators able to make changes with ease and, more importantly, very quickly, thereby achieving extremely short setup times. The lightweight aluminium printing cylinders that have been specially developed for this machine type can be changed in just a few quick steps, thus ensuring that job changes can be completed with unparalleled speed.

An optimised ink chamber for the doctor blade needs just 250 g of ink and therefore keeps the associated costs low while minimising ink spitting and foaming. The newly designed flexographic printing unit, which benefits from the construction principles established in sheetfed offset at the parent company Heidelberg, is directly driven by two servomotors and delivers Gallus premium quality from the start. Besides being fitted out with flexographic printing units, the press can also be equipped with a newly developed screenprinting unit that enables users to make the most of high-end finishing options. The register accuracy of the Gallus Labelmaster is particularly striking – whether the press is being run at a low setup speed or accelerated to a high maximum speed, the printed image is always in register, without the slightest correction necessary. This performance highlights the precision of the Gallus Labelmaster.
Gallus Labelfire 340 – digital printing now with added inline finishing functions At Labelexpo, Gallus will be focusing on reduced throughput times for manufacturing digitally printed labels by showcasing the Gallus Labelfire digital label printing press with added inline finishing processes. In contrast to existing digital label printing presses on the market, which only print digitally and then perform further processing steps for the label in a downstream process, the Gallus Labelfire can produce finished and die-cut labels in a single production operation. Thus the Gallus Labelfire achieves
faster production times for digitally printed finished labels and wastes less paper. This saves label printers time, costs and material compared to a multi-step production process, as there is no changeover required for subsequent further processing. And thanks to the latest-generation inkjet printing heads from Fujifilm, the Gallus Labelfire achieves a native resolution of 1200 dpi, which is comparable with offset printing quality. Gallus is showcasing the Gallus Labelfire digital label printing press at Labelexpo with added inline finishing processes.
Digitization at Gallus Services increases machine performance The new service offerings from Gallus fit hand-in-glove with Industry 4.0 and ensure label printers benefit from higher availability of their machinery. Gallus and Heidelberg are collaborating on many specific projects which advance the digitization in the print shops and deliver added value to customers. For example, the “M-Call” product enables automated ticket manufacturing, in which the printing press independently communicates all the necessary machine data to the Gallus helpdesk. This does away with the initial telephone calls and emails otherwise required to log the case, which is precisely how M-Call speeds up the service organisation’s response times.
to access Heidelberg’s worldwide service network in the future. Gallus customers will now benefit from the dense global network of Heidelberg local service organisations and thus faster on-the-spot service.
Gallus Screeny – easy to use, fast to print Gallus Screeny will impressively demonstrate at Labelexpo 2017 that rotary screen printing speed no longer needs to be a limiting factor in label printing. By selecting the right system components, users can significantly accelerate screen/flexographic combination printing without having to trade this off against quality. The screen printing experts at Gallus will be showcasing the system components required for this under the banner “Gallus Screeny – easy to use, fast to print”. A Gallus Labelmaster equipped with Gallus Screeny speedprinting components will present the incontrovertible evidence during the trade fair by producing labels at speeds that set new benchmarks. The screen printing department will also be teaming up with Heidelberg to showcase the new Phoenix UV LED direct platesetter. With this innovative exposure system, high-quality printing formes can be produced for almost all printing processes. Whether for screen, flexo, offset and letterpress printing, the Phoenix offers a future-proof solution for the production of high-quality printing plates with the best profitability.
Gallus customers also benefit from the almost completed integration of Gallus sales and service organizations into the Heidelberg Group. This means that Gallus will be able

75 years of passion for folding-gluing
In 2017, it will be seventy-five years since BOBST started designing and producing folder-gluer machines for the packaging industry. One of the very first such machines, a PCR382, was set up in 1942 at the Zeiler company near Bern, Switzerland. This same company, which under its current name, LimmatdruckZeiler, is now an extremely successful part of one of Europe’s leading manufacturers of folding boxes — the RLC Packaging Group —is, to this day, still a BOBST client. What began in 1942 is very much a success story. Thanks to their reputation for consistently high box quality and outstanding performance, BOBST folder-gluers have imposed themselves as the benchmark for the folding carton and corrugated packaging industries. And today’s client can purchase complete folding-gluing lines. They combine highly configurable machines with top-ofthe-range peripherals to provide integrated and automated solutions for anything the customer might need. BOBST has consistently invested around 6% of its annual turnover into research and development. This has allowed the company to develop innovative new systems, equipment and processes — many of which are still patented and unique to the sector. For all of those 75 years, BOBST foldergluers have continually evolved through the roll-out of ground-breaking new technologies such as, the blank aligner, the crash-lock module, four-corner box folding systems,
the flipper-ejector, as well as GYROBOX for the production of complex boxes in a single run, Braille embossing and zero-fault quality checks, in-line and at full running speed. Philippe Milliet, Head of Business Unit Sheet-fed, explains, “The success of our folder-gluer equipment over the past seventy-five years is the proof that passion and innovation are part of our DNA. Over the years, customers have demanded equipment that runs faster and faster, is more and more efficient, and can deliver boxes that meet increasingly stringent quality requirements across a whole range of packaging markets. We are continually developing the sophisticated materials and technologies that allow us to deliver all this, while maintaining the same reliability and longevity as those very first machines.”It is this ability to respond to client needs through constant innovation that has earned BOBST its dominant position in the folder-gluer market, such as the sector of e-commerce. Today, BOBST folder-gluers are sold worldwide, often locally produced for different markets. Founded in 1890 by Joseph Bobst in Lausanne, Switzerland, BOBST has a presence in more than 50 countries, runs 12 production facilities in 8 countries and employs more than 5 000 people around the world.

Efficient Management of collections in Archives: RFID solution from Schreiner PrinTrust for Precious Books The newly developed ((rfid))-Archive Label for precious books enables the efficient management of collections in archives. The new ((rfid))-Archive Label developed by Schreiner PrinTrust is the world’s first solution to enable the application of radio frequency identification (RFID) technology also to precious and sensitive books for contactless management of library collections. Efficient management of ordinary books using RFID technology has long been standard practice. Due to its innovative product design, the new RFID label now meets the requirements for application even to precious and sensitive books and documents. A pH-neutral, and thus acid-free, adhesive will not attack the valuable documents and makes nonresidual removal of the label possible even after decades. In addition, being certified according to ISO 9706, the label meets all the prerequisites for archival-grade materials.
The application of RFID technology for effective decades-long electronic management of their collections has become standard practice in numerous libraries around the globe. Due to the sensitivity of many antique originals stored in archives, standard RFID labels cannot be used here because the labels would irreversibly damage these precious items. For these specific requirements, Schreiner PrinTrust has developed a special RFID label for archives, enabling them to manage their collections by means of modern RFID technology.
Utilization of Archival-Grade Materials according to ISO 9706 A special high-performance adhesive that
can be non-residually removed even after a long period of time guarantees optimum protection of the precious objects which often are of historic value. In addition, the labels include an age-resistant paper that does not affect the tagged items in any way. As a result, irreversible damage to the archived documents is avoided even after decades-long application of the labels. The entire product has been tested and certified according to ISO 9706 requirements. The memory of the RFID transponder utilized in the label has a guaranteed life of 50 years, making it perfectly suitable even for longterm use.
Contactless management of precious document collections Be it precious books, papers, manuscripts, maps, drawings, pictures, photographs, newspapers, magazines, sheet music or patents: the new ((rfid))-Archive Label makes it possible for libraries to comprehensively manage their collections using contactless technology. Product Manager Christian Stephan sums up the additional benefits of the label: “Contactless reading of the information on the chip avoids manual handling of the items during stocktaking. The label enables fast and reliable bulk reading of the archived objects and enormously simplifies the search-and-find process of documents as well. For custom overprinting and programming of the labels, Schreiner PrinTrust offers specifically adapted TTR printers.

QuadTech’s extensive range of colour management and defect management solutions will be the company’s focus at this year’s Labelexpo Europe (September 25-28) at Brussels. Alongside the highlighted product portfolio, which is designed to ensure consistently high colour quality, significantly lower production times, reduced waste and increased profits, visitors to the QuadTech stand will see live demonstrations of ColorTrack, QuadTech’s latest colour workflow solution for packaging printers. According to QuadTech President Karl Fritchen, “We have demonstrated our colour management technology at a number of key events this year already and the feedback we have received from packaging converters has been phenomenal. We knew from the reaction at drupa the potential impact ColorTrack and DeltaCam could have on the industry, and we’re delighted to hear such positive feedback directly from the market. Since last summer our developers and engineers have continued to develop the products. We look forward to demonstrating at LabelExpo just how these colour breakthroughs will further improve the way printers manage colour quality and allow them to take better control of their print production.”
QuadTech Solutions for Packaging Among the innovations featured at the show is QuadTech’s Color Measurement with DeltaCam, launched at last year’s drupa. The system makes advanced, inline spectral measurement affordable to individual packaging print houses. For about half the
cost of other inline systems, package printers can utilize accurate, automated L*a*b* measurement on film, paper or board— ensuring that all printed product is within their customers’ colour specifications. The M1, M0, ISO compliant technology enables printers to reduce time and waste while confidently maintaining colour throughout the roll—without the need to wait for a roll change to measure with a handheld device. ColorTrack, a unique new colour management software for flexo and gravure packaging applications, is an industry-first highly adaptive “colour expert in a box” solution for packaging printers. With a variety of options for hand-held and inline configurations, the software facilitates fast, accurate press-side correction of ink formulations. Without any hardware modifications to the press, ColorTrack automates the process of delivering absolute consistency from press-to-press, shift-toshift, and plant-to-plant.
Seven “Color Management Breakthroughs” The live ColorTrack demonstrations will be used to showcase QuadTech’s seven “colour management breakthrough” technologies. These worldwide firsts include: • Pre-Laminate/Post-Laminate Color Support • ColorTrack Press-Side Recipe Correction Module
• • • • •
Ink strength/Anilox Color Correction Spot Color Tone Value Calculation to ISO 20654 Enhanced Color Measurement through Strip Scanning Simplified Ink Quantity Tracking via Patented “Virtual Scales” Complete, Simplified Workflow
Also featured will be QuadTech’s Color Control with SpectralCam, which compares colour accuracy to desired targets – inline, during the print run – and detects any variation. If any problems are found, the system automatically corrects the problem without the need for operator intervention. The SpectralCam camera uses 31-bin spectrophotometer technology to measure spectral response and calculates accurate L*a*b*, ΔE and ΔDensity values at maximum press speeds. Recent success for the QuadTech’s Color Control with SpectralCam includes French printing house Imprimerie Bidoit. Director Sébastien Garaboeuf comments: “Now our colours are consistent from the beginning to end of the print run. We are achieving higher quality with less waste on a variety of labels and substrates. Not only has this automation given us advantage over the competition, but it shows customers and new prospects that we are a company committed to absolute colour consistency.”

Merck opens new application laboratory in Shanghai With the expansion of the TANC in Shanghai, Merck can meet the growing number of customer requests for close collaboration and technical consultation. Merck, a science and technology company, has opened its new application laboratory for the Performance Materials business sector in Shanghai, China. The expanded Technology Application Network China (TANC) underscores the company’s strong position in pigments and functional materials. It also marks the continuation of a 20-year commitment of supplying materials and application technology services to China and Southeast Asia for products that make people’s lives better and more beautiful. The new, expanded application laboratory at the Jinqiao site in Shanghai’s Pudong district is the first application laboratory in China that Merck launched to deliver comprehensive, customized services for its quality products and to seek and foster creative collaboration with customers for new applications and formulations. This collaboration began in 1998 with the opening of the first site at Fudan University in Shanghai, based on the example of the Merck Customer Support Center. The TANC initially focused on print applications, with three expansions over the years leading to additional application fields – ranging from plastics, coating, and cosmetic applications, to dispersion paints and powder coating technologies, to quality control and cosmetic testing. China is one of the fastest-growing markets for Merck’s pigments and cosmetics businesses. Many of China’s most popular and best-known brand manufacturers rely on pigments and functional materials from Merck and tap into the TANC when developing new products. The underlying TAN (Technology Application Network) is a global unit with more than 100 employees in central competence centers that provide the market regions with technical consultation and access to application technology laboratories. Within seconds, information is transmitted from one site to another via a global network, allowing the sites to benefit from each other. product portfolio of pigments and functional materials and especially on how to integrate these products in new technologies. This includes the use of pigments in hightemperature ceramics, RGB printing, and waterborne coatings or the application of polysilazanes. In addition, more and more customers are expressing a wish for local training. It thus made sense to establish a customer experience center for workshops in a creative environment and with good connections to a lab. The TANC’s core tasks are to evaluate R&D materials according to customer specification, develop demo tools and steer their production, scientifically support products with lectures and publications, provide training for employees and customers, and perform supportive work for quality control and production. “The new TANC boosts our capabilities for supporting China and the surrounding region,” said Friedhelm Felten, Executive Vice President and Head of Pigments & Functional Materials, about the latest visible signs of continuous investments by Merck in China over many years. “We’re pleased that we can now offer our Chinese customers even more capacities to make their customers’ colour dreams come true – from automotive coatings to printing, architecture, and cosmetics. Furthermore, we’re expanding their possibilities by providing technical
services for functional materials, such as for laser marking or security applications.” This reflects Merck’s customer-centric approach of not only developing high-quality raw materials for innovative products in line with market requirements and making them available to its partners, but also delivering the related innovative technologies and applications. Merck is one of the world’s leading suppliers of effect pigments for the coating, plastics, printing, cosmetics, food, and pharmaceutical industries. Effect pigments underscore the emotional impact of colour and are an important design element when surfaces with special impressions or qualities are created. Application possibilities range from cars to packaging and high-tech products up to building facades. In addition to decorative effect pigments, Merck offers functional pigments and additives that offer practical advantages and specific additional benefits for coating manufacturers and those active in the plastics and printing industries. With inventiveness, expertise, and specialty chemicals, Merck develops valuable functional future-oriented solutions – from perfect surfaces and control of conductivity to authentication of products. Besides this, Merck also offers cosmetics manufacturers functional solutions for skin care and protection.

‘Touch by hand the real technology’ proves success formula at OMET Melbourne Open House. The latest event was organized in Australia on the occasion of PacPrint 2017. The main attraction was OMET XFlex X4 440 recently installed at one of Melbourne’s leading converters. OMET participated to PacPrint trade fair held in Melbourne from 23 to 26 May 2017 at the Convention & Exhibition Centre, with a dedicated area inside the booth of Currie Group, OMET local distributor. Claudio Piredda, OMET Area Manager explains: “Instead of bringing the machine to the exhibition, we decided to have it displayed in a working space. Thus, we organized an Open House at United Labels’ premises, only 20 minutes away from the exhibition centre, as we did four years ago during the 2013 edition, when the same client had its first OMET XFlex X4 370 installed” The attendance was impressive: a great number of people, most of them potential customers, had the possibility to see with their own eyes the potentialities of OMET presses in their proper environment and talk
to prepared technicians and sales people. Mr. Piredda continues: “We carried out several different jobs both on the new press and on the one installed in 2012. All the attendees were satisfied with the demonstrations: they realized the real advantages of OMET technology in terms of set-up time, waste reduction and cost saving. After a short break, all the visitors were driven back to the exhibition centre. We are glad to notice once again that this special format
was a huge success and we are very happy with the extremely positive feedback.

India’s first multifunction cutting table at Delhi based signage and display firm Colour Mate Digital adds 3.2-meter Esko Kongsberg C60 for efficiency and diversification
Delhi-based signage and display firm Colour Mate Digital installed the Esko Kongsberg C60 3.2-meter digital cutting table in April 2017. They are the first customer in India to purchase this wide Kongsberg multifunctional digital finishing table for signage, display graphics and packaging applications. Colour Mate needed more speed and support for their diversification strategy into packaging applications, and the Kongsberg table was an ideal solution. Colour Mate Digital partner Mr. Sandeep Bhutani states, “Our first Kongsberg table— an XN44 installed more than four years ago— has been a wonderful experience for us. As our market grew in volume and we achieved sophistication in design, we needed a faster and more versatile solution for finishing the output generated on our eight wide format inkjet printers. We evaluated our options, and without hesitation chose the Esko Kongsberg C60 digital cutting table. A huge benefit is its ability to cut vinyl sign boards, ECP, Sunpack foam board sheets, soft textiles, flex, PVC and several other substrates of varying thickness and density.”
Mr. Bhutani adds, “The signage and display market in India is growing at a healthy rate of 22 to 25% annually. Multinational corporations are investing heavily in India for brand-building activities, and this is quite encouraging for digital printing operations like us.” Colour Mate Digital has kept pace with the industry growth; the company has a 10,000-square-foot plant and 40 employees. It produces POP displays, signage, banners and billboards for a broad range of clients including advertising agencies, stand builders and architects. Mr. Bhutani is very optimistic about the company’s future potential for growth since POP signage and displays are an extremely efficient way for consumer product and service companies to target specific audiences. The new Kongsberg C60 at Colour Mate Digital with automation features, including a roll feeder and conveyor, has increased the company’s daily finishing and converting capacity from 100 to 500 sheets. With
the C60’s special knives, router tools and automation, 95% of the materials used for wide format signage and POP displays can be converted with high accuracy quickly.
Future Ready Colour Mate Digital has plans to further enhance its operation by adding Esko’s ArtiosCAD structural design software for corrugated, folding carton, POP, POS, and free standing displays. “The addition of ArtiosCAD will make us future-ready as well as help us design more complicated designs with greater ease and precision,” Mr. Bhutani adds. “It also helps that Esko’s experienced team in India is always ready to help us with its domain expertise and handholding when needed.” Always pleased by the success of his customers, Mr. Karan Talwar, Esko India sales leader for North and East India and Bangladesh, takes special joy in helping early adopters. Mr. Talwar says, “Colour Mate Digital has always been a pioneer in adopting the latest and best technology available for the sign and display graphics industry. As an early adopter of digital finishing technology with a Kongsberg XN44 cutting table in 2012, Colour Mate was able to innovate, diversify and grow its business. As one of the earliest wide format and digital inkjet print bureaus to foresee the advantages that high-end digital finishing solutions brought to digital printing, it’s a pleasure to see the company notch up another first for the Indian sign and display graphics industry.”
