Heidelberg expands subscription service - taking care of all consumables-related logistics operations for customers.
Further expansion of subscription service is a key element of digital transformation at Heidelberg.
The first print shops to try out the Heidelberg Subscription pay-per-use contract model are now seeing positive results. A significant improvement in the productivity/performance of all customers already benefiting from subscription-based production has led Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) to further expand its subscription service. The company is now offering to manage the entire consumables logistics chain for its subscription customers. This app-based vendor-managed inventory solution takes the contract model’s customer benefits to the next level. Customers have even less capital tied up in consumables, enjoy greater flexibility, and can focus even more on their own customers while Heidelberg takes care of warehouse management. The vendormanaged inventory approach also uses cloud-based interaction with the Heidelberg Assistant to give subscription customers complete transparency with regard to goods flows. Heidelberg is working with customers on an ongoing basis to develop this function using the design thinking process.

Lensing Druck in Dortmund is a pilot user of the vendor-managed inventory solution and was also one of the very first subscription customers. Consumables stocktaking at Lensing is carried out using an industry-standard mobile device that runs the app developed by Heidelberg. Revised stock levels are automatically relayed to the Heidelberg Assistant. The Material Requirements Program (MRP) ensures
sufficient stocks are available to cover the customer’s needs. “Since the launch in mid-May, our inventory management has been getting better and better. Optimized goods delivery means Heidelberg can plan supplies of the materials required virtually in real time while also conserving resources,” says Lensing Druck’s Managing Director Robert Dembinski. At the same time, purchasing and logistics processes are also becoming less complex for the customer.
Further expansion of subscription service is a key element of digital transformation at Heidelberg Due to the positive response from customers, Heidelberg is quickly and systematically further expanding the portfolio of pay-per-use contract models. In conjunction with the vendor-managed inventory solution, Heidelberg also offers its customers the option of taking out subscription contracts for consumables even without a press. Further development of the portfolio and the associated capture and analysis of usage data from numerous presses means that increasingly accurate forecasts can be made for deliveries and, ultimately, material production. As a result, Heidelberg is able to develop ever more customized services relating to the life cycle of its equipment portfolio. As for the Prinect workflow, Heidelberg is gradually converting the entire operation from the sale of individual licenses to contract business with a monthly usage-based charge.

“Contract business has become a firmly established part of our solutions portfolio and also the main driving force behind our digital transformation. Our customers benefit from improved productivity and can focus more
closely on their own customers’ needs. The subscription model gives Heidelberg a stable sales volume and makes it less dependent on economic cycles. At the end of the day, it’s a real win-win situation,” underlines
Professor Ulrich Hermann, member of the Management Board responsible for Lifecycle Business and Chief Digital Officer at Heidelberg.
Heidelberg and IMPA host training workshop at Indore Heidelberg joins hands with IMPA to host a one-day training forum at Indore for press operators. As part of a joint initiative with Indore Master Printer Association (IMPA), Heidelberg hosted a one-day training workshop at Indore in June for press operators. The session was well attended by more than 50 participants from print shops across Indore. The event imparted key knowledge of factors influencing overall productivity and fitness of offset presses. The lively, interactive sessions were well supported with real-time troubleshooting solutions. Manish Kumar Gupta, Regional Sales Manager – Heidelberg India, organized the ‘Operator Forum’ as a knowledge-sharing drive, while Munish Kaushal, Print application specialist of Heidelberg India, took the lead technically. The workshop served as a platform to educate operators on various printing methods and the dos and don’ts of offset printing processes. The training also instructed operators on the correct ratio of chemicals to be used for dampening solution, torque requirements of mounting blanket, application of precise squeezing pressure and the ill-effects of excess pressure on print quality and life of equipment. Manish Kumar Gupta commented, “The idea is to empower shopfloor personnel with more techniques to maximize productivity and minimize wastage. The forum served its objectives well, by additionally guiding shopfloor personnel on the best practices to
be observed during the production process, roller settings and the importance of roller maintenance.” “The forum was very informative and instructive. The sessions supplemented our working knowledge, while teaching us new tips and tricks to enhance productivity and make best use of our resources. Our heartfelt thanks to Heidelberg and Indore Printer Association for this excellent opportunity. We return to our jobs with more knowledge and enthusiasm,” commented Ravindra Verma, a press operator and participant. “Heidelberg has always been a trusted partner for the printing fraternity across the globe. We are very happy to collaborate with Heidelberg on this excellent endeavour. The event was highly effective, enriching participants with added value and knowledge. We look forward to more such guidance, support and inspiration from Heidelberg,” stated Swadesh Sharma, President of the Indore Printer Association. Gurmeet Singh Sethi, a press proprietor who took part in the event remarked, “Highly skilled employees are an asset to our business. Training is absolutely necessary to help them stay competent and serve

customers better, while utilizing resources optimally. With this one-day workshop, Heidelberg has once again demonstrated its ability to bring world-class training to simple press rooms. We look forward to more such sessions. Thanks to Indore Printer Association as well. ” During the event, Heidelberg also showcased Saphira Consumables, the response for which was overwhelming; Saphira blankets and Saphira range of inks and chemicals proved show stoppers.

“The key to customer retention is excellent quality and on-time delivery. We continue to reinvent our processes and strategies, and invest in forwardlooking technologies with a customer-centric focus. Our Heidelberg partnership has helped us redefine efficiency and automation, while accelerating sales volumes and revenue by 30% in the last 12 months. The latest Proman investment would position us advantageously to handle the increased flow of record new orders and backlog,” states Movva Naga Sandeep, Director - Nagendra Enterprises. The 5 decade-old Nagendra Enterprises specializes in book and commercial printing. The firm added a brand new Heidelberg Speedmaster SX 74 to its portfolio last year. The SX-74 consistently delivers high productivity by reducing make-ready times sharply, and with production speeds of up to 15,000 sheets per hour. “Prinect Pro-man perfectly complements the SX74,” Sandeep comments on his latest buy. “The accelerated inflow of quality orders has led to distinct automation challenges. The Prinect Pro-man more than meets these demands by speeding up pre-press and ink-setting operations, while reducing human touch points.” Sandeep further states, “Heidelberg Pro-man makes the Prepress tasks Automatic and is equipped with a Preflight and PDF tools and ensures that the artwork file is completely free from errors and valid in terms of format and type. If there is any discrepancy, an instant report is generated, pointing out the inconsistencies in the
artwork file, thereby shortening make-ready time. Book composing is much easier than before with the Imposition tool that positions artwork on press sheets to speed up printing and reduce paper waste. After the layouts are created the files are automatically ripped with different screenings applied and finally the Pro-man also sends ink presetting data from Prepress to the press. As and when required, the colours can be easily converted from RGB to CMYK using proper profiles, Trapping can be applied if necessary, and the PDF can be optimized. On a concluding note, Sandeep smiles, “Our journey with a trusted partner like Heidelberg has helped us leverage futuristic technologies to create an agile and empowered business platform that delivers excellence and customer delight.”
Chinese print shops are growing with Heidelberg machines from the plant in Shanghai 350 million printed sheets in ten years – the first Speedmaster CD 102 from the plant in Shanghai with impressive performance at Hefei Jingyi Printing.
“The market in Asia is evolving, and we are seeing strong demand for customer-specific machines ... We are proud of our high quality, which – thanks to the high standards of the Heidelberg production network – is equal to that of the machines from the production facility in Wiesloch-Walldorf.” - Achim Mergenthaler, Heidelberg, Shanghai
“In the last 26 years, I have always purchased printing presses from Heidelberg in order for us to grow,” says Su Zhao Chun, owner of Hefei Jingyi Printing in Hefei. During this period, he has invested in four Speedmaster CD 102 presses, two Speedmaster SM 102 and two Speedmaster XL 75. All the presses are four-colour models and were all supplied by Heidelberg. The range of services offered by the print shop has changed significantly in recent years. Previously, the focus was on printing advertising material. Nowadays, the printing of books and magazines accounts for 95 percent of activity. Over 100 employees produce in two-shift operation at the Hefei site. Su Zhao Chun is particularly proud of his range of services, which is characterized by a high degree of flexibility, fast delivery and top quality. The combination of Speedmaster CD 102 and Speedmaster XL 75 help him with this and enable him to produce both short and long runs economically. Exactly ten years ago, Hefei Jingyi Printing installed the first Speedmaster CD 102, which was delivered from the Heidelberg plant in Shanghai. The totalizer now shows 350 million sheets. The positive experiences and, in particular, the high degree of stability persuaded Su Zhao Chun to install a new Speedmaster CD 102 four-colour at the beginning of this year. It also comes from the Heidelberg plant in Shanghai. “The new Speedmaster CD 102 has doubled our productivity,” enthuses Su Zhao
Chun. “The presses from Shanghai offer us an excellent price-performance ratio and they produce with extremely high reliability.” With an average run length of 3,000 to 5,000 sheets, the high running speed and the short makeready times pay off. The new Speedmaster CD 102 from the Heidelberg plant in Shanghai already set several records in the first few weeks at Hefei Jingyi Printing: In one shift 156,000 sheets were printed and in another 240 plate changes were performed, meaning that a new form was started, on average, every 12 minutes. “This underlines the high popularity of the Speedmaster CD 102 in China, just like in the rest of the world,” explains Florian Franken, product manager for the CD 102. “The Speedmaster CD 102 is highly versatile, whether for long or short runs, thin substrates or cardboard with thicknesses of up to a millimeter – the press offers outstanding productivity, quality and value retention, and thus a high degree of investment security for our customers.”
Increased demand for customer-specific presses in Asia “The market in Asia is evolving, and we are seeing strong demand for customer-specific machines and a wealth of variants, especially for packaging printing,” explains Achim Mergenthaler, manager of the Heidelberg site in Shanghai. “We are proud of our high quality, which – thanks to the high standards of the Heidelberg production network – is equal to that

of the machines from the production facility in Wiesloch-Walldorf. Since the end of 2018, we have been delivering the Speedmaster CD 102 with eight-colors, coating unit and UV preparation for the first time, in order to satisfy customer requirements on site.” At the beginning of April, the first Speedmaster CD 102-8+L from the plant in Shanghai was installed on the premises of Xianjunlong Colour Printing Co. Ltd in Shenzhen. It is the Speedmaster CD 102 with number 999 from the plant in Shanghai. Xianjunlong is a leading Chinese packaging producer, specializing in packagings for spirits, cigarettes and luxury goods. “We need a printing press that meets our high requirements and, above all, the high standards of our customers, and helps us to expand our capacity,” states Mr. Zhuang, member of the management board. “In particular, our press operators are delighted with the new operating concept and the intelligent control with Intellistart.” The new

press is in operation as part of an extensive fleet of Speedmaster CD 102 and CX 102 presses. Furthermore, as the first boxuni production partner, Xianjunlong has also implemented a fully integrated web-to-pack production line – from a cloud-based online platform to printing on a Heidelberg Primefire 106 and postpress. Shanghai is the Heidelberg Group’s production site in Asia. There, 420 people are employed in production, in addition to 150
sales and service employees for the Greater Shanghai area. Printing presses in 50 x 70 cm and 70 x 100 cm formats are produced there, mainly intended for sale in China, but also for other Asian markets and the rest of the world. The assembly plant went into operation in 2006, and the 1,000th printing press was delivered in the fall of 2013. Production volumes have been increasing ever since, and now every fifth printing unit is produced in Shanghai. Complex machine configurations also became available recently.
The Speedmaster CD 102 eight-color with coating unit and UV preparation had its premiere for the Asian market at Print China in Donguan.

The fact that the Bengali script and language are supported by Content-X, AdSelf and the integrated alfa Stylo Editor reaffirmed the ABP Group’s decision to use the modern solutions from northern Germany. The ABP Group first learned about the practical applications of these solutions by visiting many of ppi Media’s international customers, including the SÜDKURIER in Konstanz, Axel Springer in Berlin, and The Hindu and The Printers Mysore in India. “We chose ppi Media, because we were looking for future-oriented solutions”, explains D. D. Purkayastha, Managing Director and CEO of the ABP Group. “Over the past 20 years, we’ve become the marketleading technology partner for Indian media companies. We’re delighted to work with ABP as another strategic partner in this growing market,” says Dr. Hauke Berndt, Managing Director and CEO of ppi Media.
Shaping the future with ppi Media The multi-channel editorial system Content-X will allow the ABP Group to use its print and media channels equally effectively. The media-neutral
content recorded in the digital asset management system DC-X, which is already in use at ABP, can now be exploited through various channels with a range of alternative stories. The modern and responsive self-service portal AdSelf lets agencies and users simply and conveniently book classified ads and manage them online. Billing and other transactions are handled by the BackOffice in the company’s SAP system, which works perfectly with AdSelf thanks to its integrated interface. In addition to the self-service AdSelf portal and the Content-X editorial system, which supports numerous Indian languages and was chosen by more media companies in 2018 than ever before, ppi Media’s planning suite PlanPag will also be introduced for daily newspapers at the ABP Group. The owner-managed software house ppi Media was founded in 1984 and has since become one of the leading workflow specialists for automated newspaper production. 80% of all daily newspapers on the German market are produced using products developed by ppi Media. Media companies in Europe, Asia, Africa and the US use the company’s solutions in their daily work for the planning, production and editorial workflows of digital and print products. ppi Media also guides companies seeking innovation through their digital transformation process. ppi Media’s portfolio includes the agile development of digital solutions using modern Design Thinking methods and the provision of innovation advice throughout the different stages of a company’s change process.

Why Waterless Offset Printing delivers exceptional sustainability benefits Most offset printers should be able to easily convert to waterless printing with minimal investment and training. Waterless offset printing was first introduced at drupa 1977 and brought to market in Japan by Toray in 1978. Toray has continued to be a leader in this area, bringing many innovations in terms of both plates and processors that help offset printers deliver higher quality, reduce waste – and what is increasingly important – significantly reduce their environmental footprint. Many improvements have been made in conventional offset presses over the years, but they still require water, fountain solution, and in most cases, the use of 1,000 to 1200 liters of IPA alcohol per month. In fact, this conventional B1 offset press running two shifts per day will consume around 200 liters of fresh water every day of operation. Fresh water is used by the offset press, and some of the resulting contaminated water goes down the drain. In addition, more water is used in dampening (fountain) solution, which must be disposed of as a hazardous chemical when it is changed. Because it can be both an art and a science to get the ink/ water balance just right, conventional offset printers will often have more makeready waste as well, contributing further to a negative environmental impact. This is important, since fresh water is critical to supporting human life, and in many parts of the planet –in Europe and particularly in the Mediterranean regions – fresh water is becoming a scarce resource. As mentioned, IPA alcohol continues to be used especially by those conventional offset printers who produce applications on non-absorbent materials. Beyond the impact in the printing plant, IPA alcohol contributes even more to a negative environmental impact, from the energy and resources required to manufacture it, to the cost, energy consumption and CO2 emissions associated with transporting thousands and thousands of liters each year to the various printing plants that use it. Waterless offset printing is a green alternative printing system that runs on standard offset presses. The key to waterless printing is a
plate that uses an ink-resistant silicone rubber coating to eliminate the need for achieving ink/ water balance as required with conventional dampening solution. Waterless offset printing, then, eliminates many of the problems conventional offset printers (and the environment) face. There is no water used in the printing process, thus preserving a precious resource. And since there is no need to establish ink/water balance, presses run up to colour much faster. That means less makeready waste, faster time to market, and the ability to economically produce the shorter runs that are common today. In addition, waterless offset printing delivers very high quality print, especially when printing on with non-absorbent substrates such as plastics and metal, high growth and high margin applications for waterless offset printers. It is ideal for security applications such as passports, identification cards, event tickets, bank notes and more. These applications can be difficult to print at the right quality and with the necessary security features using conventional offset printing. It is also ideal for metal decorating applications, another high-growth application opportunity. Combine the higher margins that these specialized applications deliver with the reduced waste of these more expensive substrates offered by waterless printing and it is a win/win – for the offset printer and for the customer. Also of note, as the number of newspaper titles and the subscription volumes for newspapers have declined, newspaper printing itself has become more of a service than a profit center. Waterless offset printing allows newspaper printers to increase press utilization and deliver more profit to their bottom line by producing high quality commercial printing. Most offset printers should be able to easily convert to waterless printing with minimal
investment and training. It requires: • Thermal CTP, 830nM • An offset press with a temperaturecontrol system for the inking unit –
• • •
standard in most modern offset presses – proper functioning of the silicone coating of waterless offset plates requires a consistent temperature Dedicated waterless UV/Oxidative inks A Toray or approved waterless plate processor Training for press operators delivered by Toray accredited professionals to ensure the right level of operator skills.
That’s it. The return on investment can be achieved quickly, especially when a printing company is producing high margin applications on expensive substrates, such as plastics, security papers, metal and more. As the world becomes more aware of and concerned about the climate emergency, commercial printers can do their part by reducing their overall environmental footprint. And converting to waterless offset printing is a good way to make a substantial reduction in their environmental footprint – for the benefit of their own bottom line; for their customers, especially those that are increasingly looking for sustainable printing; and for the planet. More information about waterless printing is available on Toray Waterless Website. “We stand ready to work with you to convert your conventional offset operation to waterless offset. Once you have taken this step, you will never look back and will wonder why you didn’t take this important step sooner,” says Kristian Ekvall.

The Technology inside the KODAK PROSPER Press Pigment Inkjet Inks A pioneer in inkjet technology, Kodak brings years of experience and market-proven expertise to the development and commercialization of nano-particulate inks and dispersions. What if you could ... achieve wider colour gamut, offer a broader range of substrates for inkjet printing, and have state-of-the art ink development which is environmentally friendly using water-based inks ... all delivered at a reasonable cost? You can, with aqueous nano-particulate inks and dispersions from Kodak. A pioneer in inkjet technology, Kodak brings years of experience and market-proven expertise to the development and commercialization of nano-particulate inks and dispersions. Kodak formulates, develops and manufactures high-performance inks and dispersions that are ideal across a wide range of processes and applications.
Key core competencies leveraged to produce the world’s most advanced pigment inkjet inks fine tuned for the Kodak PROSPER presses.

July 2019
The cutting-edge materials science inside the Kodak PROSPER Press pigmented inkjet inks is just the latest example of over 100 years of researching, inventing, engineering, and manufacturing of imaging materials. Three key interrelated core competencies have been leveraged to produce the world’s most advanced pigment inkjet inks that have been fine tuned for the Kodak PROSPER presses: (a) micromedia milling materials and process engineering, (b) imaging colorant chemistry, and (c) pigment dispersant chemistry. Kodak has brought these technological innovations together to produce the Kodak PROSPER Press pigment inkjet ink set. In the early 1990’s, when colour pigment inkjet inks were first becoming available in the marketplace, they were notoriously problematic for issues such as nozzle clogging, kogation, poor colour gamut, and differential gloss. The existing conventional milling technologies, pigment grades, and dispersant technologies were simply inadequate to produce small enough and stable enough pigment dispersions. Fortunately, at Kodak, comminution technologies capable of producing very narrow, sub-100-nm dispersions had already been invented and commercialized for different applications. This milling process, often referred to as “micromedia milling” uses a proprietary polymeric milling media and a proprietary milling process to efficiently grind most pigments to median particle sizes of well under 100 nm.
for optimum imaging performance and producing pigment dispersions with extremely high stability toward particle growth or settling, is quite another. This is where Kodak’s rich heritage in producing ultra stable colloids and dispersions for both silver halide imaging and liquid electrophotographic printing, combined with our vast knowledge of imaging colorants, both dyes and pigments, was leveraged to commercialize the first set of reliable, high image quality, and high image stability pigment inks for wide format commercial inkjet applications in the late 1990s. The pigments were carefully selected to (a) maximize colour gamut, (b) maximize dispersion stability, and (c) maximize fade resistance. The choice of dispersant is critical to both particle comminution and particle stabilization. Suffice it to say that commercially available dispersants are inadequate for these purposes. At Kodak we have screened literally thousands of commercial and proprietary dispersants, both molecular and polymeric, and in the process, we have found only a few classes of materials that are up to the task. When comparisons are made with Kodak and other competitive or offset inksets, several key points are clear. Kodak’s nanoparticulate pigment inks demonstrate proven quality, flexibility and scalability. Key benefits include the ability to print superior colour gamut and tonal scale with less pigment, jetting module improved reliability and efficiency and the ability to customize formulations to enhance specific attributes.
Producing such ultrafine particle dispersions is one thing but producing them with pigments selected Comparison of cyan pigments milled by either a conventional or a micromedia milling process.

Coding and marking: A key component of Smart Factories Leibinger to present industrial “Made in Germany” inkjet printers at FachPack. The demands placed on the packaging sector have increased sharply – with increased productivity, Industry 4.0 and individualization in the foreground. Those who need to package products, whether food or consumer goods, will agree: if packaging has to be coded or marked, e.g. with a best-before date or batch number, you need user-friendly, sustainable and perfectly matched solutions. At the FachPack, Leibinger is presenting its low-maintenance, user-friendly inkjet printers which are manufactured exclusively in Germany and feature all commonly used interfaces even in the Basic Line. A widely praised highlight among Leibinger customers is the printers’ fully automatic nozzle seal which prevents the ink from drying up during production breaks –providing manufacturers with decisive productivity advantages. Leibinger’s “Sealtronic” nozzle sealing technology hermetically seals the entire ink circuit in the printer during production breaks. Air therefore has no chance of penetrating the circuit and drying out the ink. Thanks to this technology, the printer can be restarted within a few seconds at any time and at the push of a button. “Our customers are impressed with this unique function and the feedback we receive is consistently positive,” reports Leibinger Sales Director Coding & Marking Alexander Deuchert from the field. “With printers from other manufacturers, customers often had the problem that they had to clean the printer for up to an hour before restarting production, e.g. after converting a line to a new product, before the first marking could be printed on the product. Since they started using Leibinger printers, this annoying step has been entirely eliminated. At the trade fair, we will be illustrating this decisive added value to interested parties very effectively with a demo print head. The “aha” effect is always amazing.”
will often discuss how we can take on the customer’s or potential customer’s coding and marking challenges and make initial recommendations. Integrated solutions are required for efficient production in line with Industry 4.0 standards,” reports Deuchert. With its four product lines, Paul Leibinger GmbH & Co. KG is ideally positioned to deliver the right CIJ printer to meet every customer requirement. With the JET One, the Entry Line includes a very attractively priced entry-level system for product marking. Leibinger never compromises when it comes to quality, even with its entry-level models. Of course, the Entry Line is equipped with the Leibinger’s patented hydraulic system and therefore offers the typical productivity advantages Leibinger printers are known for. For those who need more interfaces for smart production, the Leibinger Basic Line or the models from the Universal Line are the perfect choice. The latter, with the JET3up PRO, also has a dust- and splash-proof model that complies with the IP65 protection class. With its high-quality stainless steel housing, the printer is often used in production environments with high hygiene regulations. Leibinger also has a High Speed Line in its range for particularly fast production lines: it prints a legible code at line speeds of up to 1000 m/min.
Flexibility coupled with maximum reliability
Four product lines deliver the ideal solution for every application
Production managers often raise the question as to the most suitable technology for the specific marking tasks in their company. The focus should be on factors such as future sustainability, cost efficiency and operational reliability. Continuous Inkjet (CIJ) technology is characterized by the greatest possible flexibility in use. It can be used for virtually all tasks along the packaging process chain and copes well with most substrate materials. High printing speeds and marking during ongoing production help to ensure that highly automated production processes are not slowed down by the coding or marking process.
Visitors to the Leibinger trade fair stand at the FachPack (Hall 4, Stand 303) like to bring along their own product samples to have them marked directly on site. “Moreover, we
When switching a production, the printers can be changed over to a new product with just a few simple steps. This is especially
important when the packaging market is confronted with changing requirements, e.g. brought about by ecological trends. For Christina Leibinger, Managing Director at Leibinger, it is clear: “The trend is towards environmentally friendly packaging. Thinnerwalled and alternative plastics are used, in some cases plastic is entirely replaced by other materials made from renewable raw materials.”Production systems need to be able to handle this change – which of course also means that flexibility in labelling technology is a fundamental criterion in investment decisions. “Our customers count on a very flexible and well-functioning system that can also be used to meet changing requirements and therefore offers the greatest possible sustainability,” reports Christina Leibinger. When it comes to materials, the flexibility of CIJ systems is once again evident. High-contrast codes can be easily applied to cardboard, plastic, shrink film, foam, glass or metal. Since the technology works without contact, it doesn’t matter whether the surfaces are flat, concave, convex, reliefmolded or porous. Leibinger inkjet printers always impress users with extremely low operating costs over their entire life cycle. Leibinger and its industrial inkjet printers can be found at the FachPack in Nuremberg between September 24 and 26, 2019 in Hall 4, Stand 303.

Digital transformation of labelling How Chr. Hansen modernized labelling to streamline processes and SAP integration with a validated system.
Chr. Hansen is a global bioscience company that creates natural solutions for the food, nutritional, pharmaceutical and agricultural industries. They develop and produce cultures, enzymes, probiotics and natural colours for a rich variety of foods, confectionery, beverages, dietary supplements and even animal feed. They have one of the world’s largest commercial collections of bacteria strains, numbering over 30,000. Founded in 1874, Chr. Hansen has over 3,000 employees in more than 30 countries.
limitations. “The cost of running the system was very high,” says Johnny Krogh Sørensen, IT System Manager, Global IT for Chr. Hansen. “It was based on 15-year-old technology and was built on a fire-andforget philosophy.” As Chr. Hansen operates in the life science industry, any software that touches a regulated process must be validated according to criteria set forth by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). However, the fact that the system was custombuilt made it costly to validate it. Additionally, only internal users could access the system, and the label creation process was both tedious and cumbersome.
Labelling a business-critical function
Chr. Hansen has successfully completed validation of their NiceLabel LMS and expects all locations to run on NiceLabel this year. “This is a huge success in Chr. Hansen and we will retire our former label management system,” says Jens Berth, Senior IT Project Manager at Chr. Hansen.
Key Notes : > NiceLabel ABAP package for tight SAP integration. > Answering labourintensive label creation process. > Print queue functionality and 24/7 system availability.

Labelling is a fully-integrated part of Chr. Hansen’s production and delivery process and plays a central role in their distribution process. “It is really key that the labelling process works,” states Jens Berth, Senior IT Project Manager at Chr. Hansen. They have around 3,000 label print requests per day, and they print pouch, box, packaging and shipping labels. Chr. Hansen prints labels from 30 different locations and they have a dedicated team of label designers, Business Support, who interface with IT, Compliance, Legal and Production functions in order to create and maintain their label templates.
Challenges “We wanted true web-based access, a smooth and effective template design process and a standard system ready for validation.” Johnny Krogh Sørensen, IT System Manager, Global IT, Chr. Hansen
Labeling system makes validation challenging Chr. Hansen’s previous labelling system had its
Inability to provide 24/7 IT support critical However, the most critical shortcoming was that Chr. Hansen could not get the 24/7 IT support for the system that their production demands. “It’s mission-critical that the production line doesn’t stop,” Jens relates. “Each production line has someone responsible for identifying why the line stops, hunting down the issue and fixing it. If a line is down for 20 minutes, you get a call from upper management.” To address these issues, Chr. Hansen began the process of finding a new labelling solution. “We wanted true web-based access, a smooth and effective template design process and a standard system ready for validation,” states Johnny. The system also needed to offer global support and service, a seamless failover system and a reliable, consistent data flow.
Solutions “We have hundreds of workers creating process orders in SAP all the time. Typically
pressideas/ plc
we create orders one week in advance of the actual printing, so the web printing application lets us print the label job that was previously created by SAP; this is key for the way we work.” Jens Berth, Senior IT Project Manager, Chr. Hansen
Tight SAP integration using NiceLabel’s ABAP package NiceLabel delivered a label management solution that is tightly integrated with Chr. Hansen’s enterprise resource planning system, SAP, using NiceLabel’s SAP ABAP package. NiceLabel’s ABAP package ensured a quick, simple implementation, which pleased the Chr. Hansen team. “It works really well thanks to the SAP plug-in,” Jens relates. Chr. Hansen uses NiceLabel’s built-in label template approval process with delayed publishing workflow. Label templates are built in the NiceLabel system, and approved in the NiceLabel document management system (DMS). The solution sends label information to SAP, so that they know the label templates, variants, version, and variables used in each print batch. They have a predefined list of allowed variables stored in SAP, and if an unapproved variable is used, they get a warning. This workflow also allows them to send print requests for a specific (previous) version of a label template or variant, which is useful if they need to do a rerun of a production order.
Web printing application meets delayed label printing needs The NiceLabel team also configured a web printing application for Chr. Hansen to accommodate their way of working. The printing application is important, as labels are never printed at the same time as a work order/print request is created in SAP. “We have hundreds of workers creating process orders in SAP all the time,” relates Jens. “Typically we create orders one week in advance of the actual printing, so the web printing application lets us print the label job that was previously created by SAP; this is key for the way we work.”
Enabling 24/7 availability To meet their requirement for 24/7 system availability, they have placed local NiceLabel servers at their plants in Avedøre, Denmark; Polheim, Germany; and Milwaukee, USA.
These servers are synchronized with the main server (in Hørsholm, Denmark) so that they can continue to produce and print labels, even when the main server is unavailable.
Taking advantage of NiceLabel’s variant technology Chr. Hansen also uses NiceLabel’s variant technology, built specifically for life science companies, for the pharma part (Health and Nutrition) of their production. A label variant is the exact finished label for a specific SKU. This functionality enables Chr. Hansen’s QA staff to approve the label variants before they are printed. Label variants also prevent any unauthorized changes to the label content after the variant is created. The print operator can only change or enter a very limited set of variable fields, such as the batch number and production date.
Benefits Implementing NiceLabel’s Label Management System, with its universal label templates and label variant technology, gave Chr. Hansen the opportunity to reduce and consolidate their templates. “We’ve done a huge clean-up with NiceLabel, as opposed to the old system. We’ve really been able to reduce the number of templates we use,” Jens says.
Improved user experience benefits business users The new system also offers benefits for those
working with label design. “The users are very pleased with the Label Designer,” relates Jens. “They like the features it has. It is a much better user experience than the previous solution.” Johnny agrees, “The overview from the business support side is better. It’s a more effective process and I can discover if there’s an error earlier than I could before.”
Successful validation an important milestone Chr. Hansen also achieved a significant milestone at the start of 2019, when they successfully completed the validation of the NiceLabel Label Management System. They are still in the process of rolling out the system to the entire organization, but the hope is that all locations will be running on NiceLabel by the end of 2019. “This is a huge success in Chr. Hansen and we will retire our former label management system,” states Jens.

solutions ranges from basic models to very sophisticated high-speed label presses, and it also includes hybrid systems combining flexo printing and inkjet in roll-to-roll or roll-to-sheet configurations. In this ink flow, the UV ink needs a control especially for temperature, when it goes from the inkjet system to the flexo press. The advantage of a viscometer consists in speeding up the production by offering automatic ink control, including viscosity, temperature and pH variables in case of water-based inks. The system integrates in the information flow of the printer and in the management system implemented in the production unit.

Mimaki’s Tiger-1800B MkII was the champion of the day, earning its first award in the category of ‘textile printer roll-to-roll more than 100 sqm/h’, and the second for its Rimslow TR Series complete solution, in the category of ‘pre- and postpress-treatment solutions’. During the 13th EDP Awards contest, over 100 entries across five main categories were made, with 28 products announced as winners. Chosen based on numerous criteria including quality, value to user and environmental impact, the winners were selected by 20 leading trade publications within the digital printing industry, reaching over half a million readers across 25 European countries. As part of the Tiger Pro Series, the Tiger1800B MkII is a high-volume textile printer for direct printing or paper transfer with a print speed of up to 385m2/h. This versatility and speed paired with the printer’s ability to print at up to 1200 x 1200 dpi, enables users to produce extremely high-quality products without the need to compromise on production and throughput. Capable of handling all kinds of fabrics and papers, the printer can be used for a wide range of applications including tapestries, interior decoration and fashion & apparel. Other important features of the Mimaki Tiger1800B MkII include MAPS (Mimaki Advanced Pass System) and NRS (Nozzle Recovery System). MAPS prevents banding and colour-shifting during the printing process by spreading the edge of each pass to create a gradient. This feature, alongside NRS, which enables the printer to replace damaged nozzles with operating nozzles without stopping production, enhances the printer’s performance and boosts productivity and quality for the user. “We’re delighted that our Tiger-1800B MkII came first in two categories during such a prestigious awards ceremony,” says Bert

Benckhuysen, Product Manager for Mimaki Europe. “To be recognised for the fact that we listen closely to the needs of the market and constantly work to improve our products for customers, affirms our position as a strong force within digital textile printing.” Allowing textile printers to take full control of their workflow, the Tiger-1800B MkII and the TR Series is a complete solution for coating, printing, steaming and washing machines. Rather than purchasing technology from different manufacturers to handle the four production processes, Mimaki ensures complete technology compatibility, for improved efficiencies and quality. “The Mimaki TR Series is all about increasing productivity and cutting costs throughout the whole digital textile printing process.
Providing an entire workflow solution instead of a stand-alone product, enables us to offer a much more stable and reliable production line. This enables increased uptime and allows our customers to focus on designing products that make them stand out in the crowd,” Benckhuysen concludes. Mimaki Europe showcased both the Tiger1800B MkII and the TR Series at ITMA 2019.
Xerox wins multi-year IWS contract from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Xerox Intelligent Workplace Services (IWS) offering transcends traditional Managed Print Services to enhance security, support compliance, reduce environmental impact and improve productivity. Xerox has been awarded a multi-year, multimillion dollar contract administered by the Executive Office of Technology Services and Security (EOTSS), the Commonwealth of Massachusetts’ secretariat leading the digital transformation of the Executive Branch. With the agreement, Xerox will provide Intelligent Workplace Services (IWS), a Xerox offering that transcends traditional Managed Print Services to enhance security, support compliance, reduce its environmental impact and improve productivity for the 43,000 employees the EOTSS serves across the Commonwealth. Xerox will design and manage a more efficient print infrastructure for Massachusetts and will introduce Xerox AltaLink and VersaLink Multifunction Printers (MFPs), also known as workplace assistants. These MFPs are equipped with a common user interface and built-in security features that make it easier to create and share electronic documents securely, thus transforming how employees work.
Security software, Xerox Workplace Suite and Xerox Image Overwrite, also will help the EOTSS and the agencies it serves manage and secure their digital assets—a key priority for the Commonwealth. Xerox Workplace Suite helps govern device access, and Xerox Image Overwrite destroys confidential information stored on the hard drive of MFPs. “The Executive Branch of the Commonwealth
of Massachusetts is at the forefront of implementing new technologies that protect and maintain their assets and automate tasks to make them more effective,” said Mike Feldman, president of Americas Operations, Xerox. “Xerox will help the EOTSS engineer a smarter, more efficient print environment that will help those they serve, and by extension, the constituents in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.”
