Heidelberg showcases Anicolor capabilities at Open House at Prakash Offset One-day Open House at Prakash Offset highlights the unique capabilities of India’s first Heidelberg Speedmaster SX 52 Anicolor along with Heidelberg’s press solutions, expertise and experience. On June 21, Heidelberg India hosted an Open House, showcasing the country’s first Speedmaster SX 52 Anicolor press installed at Prakash Offset. The launch function included a factory visit to Prakash Offset Printers’ facility in the outskirts of Mangalore city, followed by a presentation by Heidelberg executives titled “Discover how Anicolor technology can help your business grow”. Heidelberg’s relationship with Prakash Offset spans over two decades, ever since the print shop installed its first Heidelberg machine in 1983. Today, the firm houses eight Heidelberg presses, including the latest feather in its cap – the Speedmaster SX 52 Anicolor – which was added in early 2014.

Amazing 5 jobs in 35 minutes! The one-day open house witnessed enthusiastic participation from 50 Commercial and Digital Printers across the country. The event included live machine demos, site visits to Prakash Offset’s unit two in Baikampadi industrial area and technical presentations from Heidelberg’s knowledge experts.

Under the guidance of Saseendran Baskaran, Heidelberg’s Product Manager – Press Solutions, Prakash Offset’s operator printed five jobs, each of 125 sheets, in thirty-five minutes. This included make-ready and changeover times. Interestingly, each job varied from the other in terms of artwork, paper density and type of substrate used. A variety of substrates were used, including 170 GSM art paper, 300 GSM art card, 250 GSM Natural Evolution paper and 300 GSM textured paper. Despite that, the changeover time was less than seven minutes, even for jobs with heavy ink coverage. This latest technology press from Heidelberg is

best suited for high quality, short run print jobs says Mr.Ravi Nayak, MD of Prakash Offset. This press eliminates “make ready time” and thus helps in increasing throughput and instant delivery. It can print on any substrate from 0.6 to 300 gsm and can print six jobs of 1000 impressions in ten minutes. The consistency in the printed output is excellent and even the first printout is saleable. It costs around Rs.1800/- for 1000 impressions he adds. Prakash Offset’s PR Nayak appreciated the commitment and dedicated support from the Heidelberg India team led by General Manager, Peter Rego. On the recent Anicolor installation, Anand Prabhu, Nayak’s nephew and a partner at the firm, said, “With short make-ready times and quick job execution, the new press would help the company to compete with digital printers. Installed in January 2014, the press has worked well, completing high quality short run print jobs quickly and efficiently.

Deliver 40 jobs per day on Anicolor The Speedmaster SX 52 Anicolor is well-positioned to handle short-run print jobs, starting from as low as 100 sheets onwards. “In a shift of eight hours, the press delivers more than 40 jobs, irrespective of sheet size or substrate. That is incredible,” adds Anand Prabhu with a smile. This is possible because of the Anicolor inking unit, which is a short zoneless inking unit with a

dampening system that facilitates quick and even inking. No tedious inking adjustments are required with the Anicolor, as it is extremely easy to operate. Elaborating on the Anicolor technology, Udo Fiebiger, Regional Business Manager, Heidelberg Asia Pacific, stated, “Lot of thinking has gone into the Anilox inking system, which is why it uses a chamber doctor blade instead of a conventional roller train. The Anilox applies a metered, exact amount of ink on every revolution. The same ink consistency and top notch printing quality can be maintained for any run-length of the job. The temperature of anilox roller can be regulated in order to make any minor changes in the ink densities.”

He listed the various pre-press requirements for an Anicolor press. There is no presetting softwares involved and the zoneless inking unit is extremely easy to use. With full integration to the Prinect workflow, the Anicolor technology is ideally suited for Offset Printers with short run jobs as well as for Digital Printers. The higher version of the XL 75 Anicolor press is more suitable for Package printing. In his presentation, Saseendran gave emphasis to the Return on Investment (ROI) competitive edge of the Anicolor press in terms of time-saved and performance. On a final note, Indukalpa Saikia, Product Manager – Postpress Solutions, highlighted Heidelberg’s finishing solutions for short-run print products.

Mr.Udo Feibiger of Heidelberg, Bangkok listed the various milestones of the Anicolor press. Launched in IPEX 2006, more than 270 SX 52 machines and 1000 units of XL 75 model have been installed across the globe as on date. Easy changeover of jobs, 50% more press capacity, high degree of surface finishing, broad range of substrates, consistent inking giving 100% offset quality are some of its salient features. Explaining the technology, Udo Fiebiger says, “The cylinders are all the same diameter meaning there are no ghosting issues on the printed sheet. The temperature of anilox roller is regulated in order to make any minor density changes. Even very difficult jobs can be changed in less than seven minutes.” While Sasseendran Baskaran spoke about

Unique 90:50:50 operating philosophy Ashokan Krishnamoorthy, Product Manager – Prepress Solutions, explained the 90:50:50 operating philosophy of Anicolor technology, “Anicolor reduces Paper wastage by 90% compared to machines with conventional inking units. This means 90% less makeready sheets. The anilox inking system eliminates the need to adjust the ink keys to match colours, implying 50% shorter makeready times. The above two features combined, enhance productivity by 50% or simply means 5 jobs printed within 35 minutes, as seen during the demo at Prakash Offset.”

cost savings with Anicolor technology, Mr.Ajit Kumar and Mr.Peter Rego spoke about the wide range of Heidelberg portfolio from prepress to postpress, thus offering one stop solution to their customers for all their printing needs. Heidelberg has a 50% market share of installed presses and 80% market share in perfecting technology, added Ajit Kumar. Speaking about the investment cost in Heidelberg technology, Peter Rego highlighted that though Heidelberg press cost 15% more, they give 25% more production than the competing presses. He also emphasized that when one invests in the only one complete solutions provider like Heidelberg, the profits are more. Indukalpa Salkia spoke on the postpress solutions offered by Heidelberg. One of the participant printers at the Open

House, Repro India’s Ganesh Khandare was impressed with the low footprint of Anicolor, and called it the key USP of the press. With full preset and automation in terms of a fully automatic simultaneous plate change and format presetting, it’s basically a push button technology. It just needs to be backed up with a well-tuned pre-press with colour management and high-volume plate output capacity. At the open house, the Heidelberg team described Anicolor as a solution for medium run commercial print jobs such as those with quantities ranging from 100 sheets and above. In a nutshell, the one-day Anicolor open house served as a great platform to

showcase Heidelberg’s press solutions, expertise and experience…to foster existing client relationships and create the potential for new ones. The second session of the open house was a visit to Prakash Offset’s second unit in Baikampadi industrial area. It houses eight Heidelberg’s including the Anicolor installed in January 2014 and a Xerox 1000 for short runs. Prakash Offset installed a Heidelberg Speedmaster SM 102 four-colour press and a Heidelberg Suprasetter 105 CTP two years ago in 2012. The CTP feeds the SM 102 and XL 75. The jobs include large-volume book printing applications and packaging jobs for beedi labels.

Kaliswari lights up printing division with Heidelberg solutions It’s a Perfect Match for Sivakasi’s Kaliswari Group which recently invested in Heidelberg Pro C 751 Digital Press & Polar N 115 Plus Cutter. Sivakasi’s Kaliswari Group, one of the leading manufacturers and global exporters of Fireworks, added sparkle to its in-house printing division, by recently investing in Heidelberg solutions. Although Pyrotechnics is the primary business, the Kaliswari umbrella brings together other diverse business verticals, including educational institutions, Transport and Hotels. An in-house printing division caters to the labeling and packaging needs of the Group’s own Fireworks business. From humble beginnings as a ‘Match factory’ founded by Shanmuga Nadar in 1923, the 90-year old company exploded into prominence and growth after expanding into fireworks. The Kaliswari group manufactures and sells fireworks under the wellestablished and reputed “Cock” brand. Today, the group of companies has 30 plus factories, employing nearly 9,000 staff.

“The Heidelberg Pro C 751 is the latest jewel in our crown. Easy to use, it offers an exceptional range of functions and outstanding print quality.” - A. P. Selvarajan, Director, Kaliswari

In a latest move, the Kaliswari Group has installed the Heidelberg Pro C 751 digital press for its internal applications. Ideal for cost-effective production on very short runs, the digital press can print up to 75 A4 pages/minute with paper density or grammages of up to 300 GSM. The oil-free PxP toner ensures optimum image quality of up to 4800 dpi resolution, which is close to results achieved with offset printers. The digital press can handle paper sizes between 3.94 × 5.51 inches and 13.00 × 19.20 inches.

Mr. A. P. Selvarajan, the Director of Kaliswari Group, is an ardent admirer of Heidelberg equipments. “We still have the original Heidelberg cylinder presses that were used during early days of operation. The equipments are in perfect working condition even today” he beams. “The Heidelberg Pro C 751 is the latest jewel in our crown. Easy to use, it offers an exceptional range of functions and outstanding print quality”. Mr. Manoharan, Senior Manager of the Group nods in affirmation, before adding, “We use the Heidelberg Pro C 751 mostly for test-printing and sampling specialty paper and boards for packaging purposes. The print matches offset quality. Also, it helps save considerable time and money that we would otherwise spend on outsourcing.” Although it was started as an offshoot of the Fireworks division, the in-house printing unit at Kaliswari is well endowed with state-of-the-art equipments. Prepress facilities include CtP, multicolour offset presses and flexo printing presses, while the Postpress portfolio features Polar cutters, die-cutters and folder gluers. In addition to the Pro C 751, the Kaliswari Group has also invested in a Heidelberg Polar N 115 plus cutting equipment. This programmable, high-speed cutter, which is used for cutting paper, cardstock, paper board, and plastic foils, comes with an 18.5 inches

Commercial Printing. Competence. Network. 2014 Hot-off-the-press topics for commercial printers at KBA in Radebeul Koenig & Bauer (KBA) welcomed over 250 print pundits from 22 countries to its sheetfed offset plant in Radebeul on 26 and 27 June. Under the banner “Commercial Printing. Competence. Network. 2014” the visitors were updated on the hottest topics regarding commercial printing. Following the two-day open house which focused on the latest trends in packaging printing in mid-May, this was the broadly based printing press manufacturer’s second, internationally acclaimed customer event of 2014. The first day was dedicated to theory. On the next day the participants were able to choose between various print demos which focused on perfecting, on-demand printing, mass production and finishing.

of versatility with the raft of different add-ons available. Along with standard materials (usually 0.06 to 0.6mm) they can handle thin substrates (from 0.04mm) up to heavy board, beer mat board or microflute (1.2 to 1.6mm). Rapida components are even used by KBA MetalPrint in metal decorating systems.

Martin Wenk, executive board member of communication agency Jung von Matt/ Neckar in Stuttgart, held an inspiring keynote speech. In a creative and entertaining way he showed that in today’s media arena print and brand communication has to be surprising and convincing in order to be effective: “Good advertising works like this as well, just like the most successful idea ever – the Trojan horse. It comes nicely packed as a gift, but it is specifically designed for conquering.” Martin Wenk offered insights into a consumer society full of emotion and with the aid of specific examples showed just what really counts in advertising.

As flexible as an ant Ants are brought up to take on various roles, ranging from hunters, food gatherers and cultivators which look after fungi as a source of nutrition. They are all-rounders. KBA product manager Anja Hagedorn used the example of these versatile insects to address the topic of flexibility in printing. The Rapida sheetfed offset presses can achieve this level

18

June 2014

The KBA Rapidas can also be equipped for maximum flexibility for inline finishing. The RSP solutions from CITO open up numerous possibilities in terms of grooving, die-cutting and perforation. These can be implemented in the printing units and coater. Anja Hagedorn presented possible applications and compared these based on practical

criteria, such as the cost of die plates, flexibility, ease of operation, register accuracy and print-run stability. Sensory effects make a printed product distinctive and prompt consumers to look at it, touch it or even smell it. Luxury finished printed matter in particular evokes such consumer reactions. One coater or a free-standing printing unit in connection with a coater are all that’s needed to create many finishing effects, such as drip-off, haptic qualities or fragrances. KBA has a wealth of experience in inline finishing and the company often sets new trends with its Rapidas. An example of this from shortly

after the millennium was the hybrid printing method which simultaneously uses oil-based overprint varnish and UV coating for premium finished printed products.

As clever as an arctic fox Fellow KBA product marketing representative Jens Baumann focused his presentation on the topic of performance in commercial printing. He looked at far more than just speed. Perfection when turning the sheet, fast job changes and quick finishing with effective drying all at the lowest possible costs contribute to performance in commercial printing. The Rapida commercial presses are designed specifically for this with features ranging from fast perfecting at speeds of up to 18,000sph, AirTronic delivery, simultaneous plate changing (DriveTronic SPC) and new drying processes, such as HR-UV und LED-UV. The latter offers interesting approaches to optimise investment costs with short delivery times: investment in conventional four or eight-colour presses is the lowest. However, the printed products cannot be finished immediately. Investing in a four or eight-colour press with coater would bump

20

June 2014

up the start-up costs, but it is then possible to finish the products immediately. HR-UV dryers before perfecting or in the delivery only moderately increase costs compared to conventional presses as a coater are not necessary. Printed products can still be sent straight to finishing. LED-UV is a process with a promising future. LED-UV dryers significantly and sustainably reduce

energy consumption. In addition, they have a long service life, require little maintenance and offer many other advantages. Every firm should look for the optimum solution for them based on job structure and an accompanying cost calculation. Jens Baumann recommends: “Look at the artic fox. Its fur offers the best insulation and energy-saving qualities of all land mammals.

It also uses less energy when running in winter than in summer.” Under the key word “efficiency” head of KBA complete services & key account manager Europe Sascha Fischer spoke about boosting efficiency by networking, production planning/control and process optimisation. Under the name “KBA Complete Services”, the company offers integrated solutions and top-of-the-class automation technologies, all flanked by comprehensive advice and consulting services. When required, KBA works closely with technology partners, such as Kodak, Optimus, Printplus, Logica, MBO, ClimatePartner, IPM, Perfecta, Montex, Müller Martini and others.

Premiere: LED-UV also in large format The print demonstrations focused on typical commercial print applications with particular attention paid to economy, efficiency, finishing and innovation. A ten-colour Rapida 106 was shown producing a cookery book signature. This was followed by a gang forme in quick succession. Four-colour posters were then produced by switching between the first and last four printing units. The other units were set-up for the subsequent job with Flying JobChange and the next job could begin immediately without any interruptions to production. Innovative UV drying processes were demonstrated on an eight-colour Rapida 105. The visiting print experts were able to directly compare the images produced and cured using HR-UV and LED-UV. A further highlight on this press was inline colour measurement with grey-

balance control from System Brunner. The print demonstrations which took place on large-format presses focused on mass production. Typical book and calendar pages on silk-matt art paper were produced on a six-colour Rapida 145 with coater and delivery extension. The inks were cured by a LED-UV interdeck dryer for the first time ever in large format. The sheets were then finished with a matt aqueous coating, and with glossy UV coating following a coating change. A five-colour Rapida 145 with coating kit printed a brochure in various languages on the other side of the pressroom. With the Flying JobChange capability the plates for black ink were switched between the first and second printing units during production and the language variations were produced

without any interruptions to production after decoupling and coupling of the corresponding inking units. Both presses ran at speeds of up to 17,000sph.

High-quality finishing LED-UV dryers are also available for the half-format Rapida 75. KBA demonstrated the fast production and finishing of postcards on a five-colour press. Printing on the back of the substrate with LED curing after the fifth printing unit was followed immediately by printing the front. This included inline perforation which meant that the individual post cards could be separated easily. Highquality covers of a magazine were printed on a six-colour Rapida 106 equipped with a KBA VariDry HR-UV dryer and cold-foil kit. They were finished with cold foil and UV high-gloss coating. A further Rapida 106 printed at a maximum speed of 20,000sph. Nearly all of the presses used for the print demonstrations are equipped with cutting-edge systems for quality assurance, including QualiTronic ColorControl (inline colour control), QualiTronic InstrumentFlight (inline grey-balance control) and QualiTronic PDF (inline PDF control). An evening spent together in one of Dresden’s traditional pubs not only provided an opportunity for the guests to exchange thoughts on the day, but also to watch the Germany-USA World Cup football match.

International Packaging & Supply Chain Conclave 2014 The International Packaging & Supply Chain Conclave 2014 held in Delhi, Pragati Maidan Conference Centre between June 11-12, 2014. This Conclave was organized to put together a knowledge based discussion on the role of packaging design in efficient end-of-line and supply chain operations. Knowledge experts from various facets of the industry participated – among which are names from: ITC, Nestle, Coke, GSK, Barista-Lavazza, Cadbury-Mondolez, Oriflame, Home TV 18, Organics India, Adani, Esko, Omron, Mamata, UFlex, Weldon Celloplast, Kumar Printers and more. With a theme to gain market value by creating the emerging concept of market driven value network, the Conclave acted as a common knowledge platform for brand owners, packaging technologists and logistics experts. Mr. Ranesh Bajaj, Director of VINSAK was among from the Panellists on 12thJune,

2014 for Supply Chain Conclave 2014. He discussed about the Brand Protection Solutions. Under Security Solutions – Security Inks, Software, Substrates as well as Track & Trace solutions were discussed during the show. In the environment of brand volatility and slow market growth such market driven supply networks are being increasingly sought after to create lean and cost efficient processes. The advent of on-line retail and its attendant sales forecasting and inventory complexity have made the demand even more urgent. The participants at the conclave addressed various complex issues across organizations.

Gaining Competitive Edge with Integrated Packaging & Supply Chain Processes Competitive packaging and shelf display in modern retail alone cannot help to build winning products unless it is backed by a resilient, efficient supply chain. Emerging concepts in packaging design, operations,

sourcing and distribution logistics seek to build integrated platforms of market driven value networks. The packaging is designed not only with the consumer in mind but also its freight and handling. The supply chain seeks to go beyond the old adage of “right product at the right place” to being adaptive enough to sense and realign market focus at all times. In such a scenario the packaging industry must develop a better understanding of user expectations and put in place the required processes that will meet those demands effectively. The Conclave was planned as an opportunity for packaging users, convertors, equipment and material manufacturers as well as Supply Chain & Logistics professionals to come together on a platform to freely discuss their requirements. The outcome of such discussions helped the development of highly adaptive packaged product supply and distribution networks which was built with real-time market data.

CGS supports open standard to digitally exchange brand colors with ORIS CxF Toolbox & ORIS CxF Designer There is no denying the persuasive power colour holds – Coca-Cola red, Tiffany & Co. blue, John Deere green. Showing your brand’s individuality isn’t just about ensuring consumers recognize you, it’s also about differentiating your brand from the competition’s. Powerhouse companies leverage colour to a point where it’s synonymous with their identities. But what happens in stores when packaging colours don’t line up with each other? Consumers may think a product is old or defective, and the sale along with trust is lost.

profiles etc. This CxF spectral data provides the data to accurately simulate ink colours, tint ramps and overprints for design prints and contract proofing.

What’s Next? In preparation for the standardization of CxF data use, CGS worked with SmileyColor to develop tools to create, analyze and design CxF files. ORIS CxF Toolbox creates an ISO 17972-4 compliant CxF or CxF/X-4 from a measurement file, including spectral data, delivering a file that allows the printer to define ingredients and tolerances, data for ink formulation and pre-qualification of inks, proofing and process control systems.

ORIS CxF Designer, an Illustrator plug-in imports CxF data containing brand owner’s specific brand colours or libraries into the Adobe design software colour pallet. It then embeds spectral data, tints ramps and opacity information to final PDF/X files in an open file format. ORIS CxF Toolbox and ORIS CxF Designer utilize the new ISO standards and an open format the entire supply chain can utilize. These tools provide all the information required to improve quality, reduce costly errors and improve customer satisfaction.

ISO Standard 17972 Effectively communicating printing characteristics of inks along the supply chain is essential to ensuring the final piece matches a brand’s vision. Traditionally, inks are thought of as either process or spot colours. Process colours are printed using a combination of the four standard process inks (CMYK), and typically are communicated to the printer in the form of ICC profiles. Spot colours are premixed inks used when colour accuracy is critical, and to accurately reproduce colours outside the process colour gamut. For the last decade, the ISO 17972 proposal has been working to define methods for the exchange of measurement data and associated metadata within the graphic arts industry, and for the exchange of files between graphic arts users. ISO 17972 will remove the guesswork of communicating colours from concept to printer by using CxF/X-4 data in PDF documents, and the wait is almost over for the standards’ unveiling.

Universal format guarantees usability Scheduled for final publication in October 2014, ISO 17972 looks to standardize the Xrite Color Exchange Format (CxF) designed to accurately and unequivocally communicate all relevant aspects of colour across devices, applications and locations. This will replace the current CGATS format for communicating colour information, and become a universal language for the print world. CxF works in harmony with the openness of XML to seamlessly integrate with any web-driven workflow, ICC colour

Heidelberg initiates next stage of Group’s reorganization portfolio with the planned complete takeover of the Gallus Holding AG. In fall this year, Heidelberg and Gallus will be unveiling a new digital printing system for the label market based on Fujifilm technology. Ferdinand Rüesch will also become a new strategic anchor investor of the company by acquiring around 9 percent of Heidelberg shares in return for the Gallus stake. At the same time, Heidelberg is strengthening its capital structure, which will support the company’s strategic reorientation.

Following five years of losses, Heidelberg has achieved a € 4 million net profit for financial year 2013/2014 coming back from a negative figure from the past few years. The Group plans sustained profitability in the years ahead by expanding growth segments, implementing portfolio measures and introducing structural cost projects. It aims to achieve an EBITDA margin of no less than 8 percent by financial year 2015/2016. “In returning to profitability, we have reached a first important milestone,” said Heidelberg CEO Gerold Linzbach. “We are now starting the next stage of the Group’s reorganization so as to achieve a sustained increase in corporate value. This involves making acquisitions in growth segments, scaling down areas of business with weak margins, and cutting structural costs in order to further improve profitability,” he added. Heidelberg is further developing its digital

Heidelberg sees particularly good opportunities for growth in the expansion of its activities involving services and consumables. Following the successful takeover of a coating manufacturer, discussions on a further acquisition are currently under way. As part of the collaboration with Fujfilm, an OEM agreement to supply platesetters (CtP) has also been concluded. Fujifilm will market Heidelberg platesetters under its own name in future, while Heidelberg has taken over some European sales activities for Fujifilm printing plates. As regards services, the marketing of new service products has gotten off to a successful start. The portfolio now also includes consulting, which extends beyond simply providing technical services and is intended to achieve a concrete, measurable improvement in customer results.

Heidelberg has also switched to new business models lately. Over the next six months, the company may decide on discontinuing some operations or altering the vertical range of manufacture. Ongoing projects to boost efficiency have already led to a streamlining of structures at the Group’s key sites in Heidelberg and Wiesloch/Walldorf. By the end of financial year 2014/2015, there are plans to integrate the administrative headquarters into the Wiesloch/Walldorf production site. This will involve the relocation of the Management Board and some 500 employees. This step is expected to further improve the harnessing of synergies between the two sites and lead to significant savings in operating costs. It will also create the world’s largest demonstration print shop for both packaging and commercial printing, where customers will get a live insight into the interplay of printing technology, future-focused service concepts and consumables. “The Heidelberg corporate culture is entering a new era. The key focus when taking decisions will be on both our customers’ results and our own. We are bringing key functions and operational areas into closer proximity and are gearing our activities more toward the market and our customers. This will make Heidelberg leaner and more profitable. The measures we are planning in the current financial year will lay the foundation for achieving an EBITDA margin of no less than 8 percent by financial year 2015/2016,” concluded Linzbach. As of March 31, 2014, the Heidelberg Group had a global workforce of 12,539 plus 502 trainees (previous year: 13,694 plus 521 trainees).

The 34th FINAT Label Awards continue to excel India, entering 13, won 4 awards - with about 30% winning entries.

FINAT, the international association for the selfadhesive labelling industry, announced the winners of its 34th label awards competition at the award ceremony of its annual FINAT congress in Monaco. There were 241 awards entries representing 49 companies from 25 countries, including two newcomers this year, Ile de la Reunion and Latvia. The quality of the entries has been maintained at a high level once again.

the best labels that have been produced gives a valuable overview of just what can be achieved by those printers at the top of their game. To see and understand the amount of work, skill and effort that goes into producing a label with up to 12 print and process stages is quite stimulating. Having said that, a label in just two or three colours or processes can have just as dynamic an impact,” he concluded.

Best Show and Group Winners Chairman of the judging panel was industry expert Mike Fairley (UK), standing in for Tony White, who was unable to assist due to health issues. He was joined by the judging panel regulars Murat Sipahioglu (Turkey), Steve Wood (UK) and Rik Olthof (Cartils, The Netherlands). This year they received additional support from Bill Bruce (editor foodbev.com) and Bernard Plat, past president of the French label association UNFEA.

The Best in Show and Printing Processes Group winner awards went to Multi Labels, United Kingdom for “The Irishman Single Malt” label. This label received consistently high marks from the technical and design judges. At first glance this label looks simple to produce but the facts tell another story. The generous use of delicate gold hot foiling especially in the signature and reversed out areas is worthy of note. The fact that 10 colours were used to achieve the finished result along with embossing and varnishing in a single pass is testament to the degree of control required to produce this label to such a high standard. A combination of the best attributes of the flexo and screen processes have produced the result which merits the Best in Show.

Esko Knowledge Base website has successful rollout With access to valuable hardware and software information, self-service support has increased 75% in less than half a year Esko has announced the successful implementation of its on-line Knowledge Base system. This system, part of a complete Esko help center available at http://help. esko.com/, is a digital platform for customer support self-service. It is accessible for Esko users worldwide and can be navigated in a number of languages. “According to the Technology Services Industry Association (TSIA), planned spending on knowledge management and self-service technology is currently very high. Companies are relying on technology to create more robust self-service knowledge base systems,” comments Igor Vandromme, Esko Vice President Global Services. “TSIA also reports that new technology is enabling self-service sites to be overhauled and help to improve success rates. When more than half of TSIA members plan to spend resources in a single technology area, it is obvious that a major industry shift is occurring.” Esko is responding to customer preferences that more users prefer to access online resources as their ‘first line’ of immediate support. According to Forrester, 72% of customers prefer using a company’s website to answer their questions. Esko is responding to the challenge of providing different support solutions and delivering more options for people to learn about their software and equipment. In the process, the online help system offers creative, insightful answers to ‘How would I do this’; not just solving technical problems. The efforts have paid off. Visitor traffic has increased 75% from its launch less than half a year ago. The Knowledge Base library is Wiki-based and searchable. It is populated with articles written by Esko experts: support associates, product specialists, and others who have a good sense of what is – and what is not – helpful, practical information. Each article goes through an extensive auditing process to ensure it is valuable, categorized properly and technically correct. “Esko’s Knowledge Base is a supplement to our support teams, a means to help

customers find answers immediately. We are building an integrated support network and therefore are deploying modern technology to assist our customers,” adds Vandromme. “Our customers are pushing us to offer a self-service model, something that is more efficient and effective for basic questions. We’re just responding to the changing needs of the workforce.” Esko develops topics that they see are being tapped for information, using Google Analytics as a tool to analyze site use. “Our daily management shows who is adding articles,” says Pieter Reel, Engineer at Esko, “so we can react quickly, review content and post the articles.” After each Knowledge Base answer, Esko gives the user the opportunity to tell the company if the article was helpful or not, and to make a comment. “Esko is getting a 20% hit rate on user feedback, well above industry standards. The vast majority tells us that our articles have been helpful,” explains Vandromme. “We truly value that feedback. If a comment suggests that the item was not helpful, we will review that feedback to the author and address the issue immediately. In the same way, if an article receives a favorable comment, we will compliment

the author. This helpful feedback has helped grow Knowledge Base contributions from Esko experts rapidly. We want to get everybody at Esko involved, and it appears to be working.” Esko continues efforts to improve the site: navigation, user experience and immediate access to the most important information for the user are key drivers. Among other new features, ‘hot fixes’ will become part of the Knowledge Base. Packaging workflows of today For packaging converters, the challenge is to push more production jobs in shorter runs through their plants while operating faster, better, cheaper and greener. Brand owners expect all that from their suppliers, but on top also are seeking creativity and innovation from supply chain partners in order to differentiate their products and create greater shelf appeal. Achievement of these objectives requires seamless collaboration among all supply chain stakeholders as a key outcome.

entire packaging design, production and distribution process. In doing the research for this white paper, I was particularly intrigued by the smart template concept as a basis for near-lights-out prepress workflow in packaging preproduction. We have seen this concept in play in other areas of the printing industry, where it has made a huge difference, and it is exciting to see smart template capabilities now becoming available for packaging preproduction as well.”

“Increasingly, the package is the brand,” Sherburne added. “Brand owners and packaging converters alike must stay current with the latest technologies in order to better understand the possibilities for innovation and improvement across the

infrastructure accommodates the need for smaller runs of more targeted packaging,” Sherburne said, “and also allows late-stage editing, critical in a dynamic environment such as the one we face today. The ability to change content once and have it flow through a variety of templates also ensures that all content remains current and in regulatory compliance. This improves efficiency and reduces cycle time, benefiting all stakeholders within the packaging supply chain.”

CLP regulations fuel global demand for peel and read varnish Narrow web ink and varnish manufacturer, Pulse Roll Label Products Ltd., reports increased demand for its UV flexo free radical release varnish for peel and read applications fuelled by EU regulatory demands for increased information on labels, packaging and their content. With less than a year to go when Classification, Labelling and Packaging (CLP) regulations become mandatory on 1 June 2015 for all mixtures, demand for peel and read labels is growing as these formats become the preferred choice for many end users. Suitable for application on a wide range of packaging, containers and bottles, peel and read labels allow additional space on pack for consumer product and safety information, user instructions and similar, but without sacrificing graphics, visual appeal and impact on shelf.

runnability and printability, it is easy to see why this product would be in high demand by label and package printers in the UK and beyond. Seward adds, “Changes in label and packaging regulations often brings many challenges. The new CLP legislation does however, also bring new market opportunities and this is driving demand. As well as being a proven and consistently high quality product, our formulation offers a potential lower cost alternative to the conventional cationic chemistry used for peel and read labels. We would be very happy to help UV flexo printers enter or expand their share of this growing market sector through product trials involving both customers and end users. Pulse Roll Label Products Ltd. has been

supplying high quality inks and varnishes for the global narrow web label printing market since 2001. The company’s product range includes UV curable and water-based inks and varnishes for flexo, screen and letterpress printing, low migration products, special effects, digital varnishes, primers, adhesives and more. Serving an international customer base from its UK based manufacturing operation the company’s products are sold worldwide.

Gary Seward, MD at Pulse Roll Label Products said, “Following the development and launch of our UV flexo free radical release varnish in 2011, we have seen considerable growth in peel and read applications in both the UK and export markets. This dramatic increase in demand reflects growing end user requirements to provide enhanced product and more detailed consumer information on pack. Now a market-leading product, which has set an industry standard after being in commercial use for over three years, our release varnish is now one of our best sellers worldwide. The forthcoming changes in CLP regulation present many opportunities for end users to take advantage of peel and read label technology and our free radical release varnish provides a great solution for both end-users and label printers alike. The company claims the product provides excellent release properties and adhesion with smooth, even and consistent repeatable release characteristics on a variety of substrates. The free radical UV formulation is optimised for smooth running on press and can be used on any printing machine at any time, significantly reducing waste and press clean-up times, improving production efficiencies and overcoming issues often associated with the use of cationic systems on press. With potential cost-savings to be achieved and the benefits of easier

OMET’s ‘Open doors’ event attracts over 150 companies and sold 3 hybrid presses Customers from all continents have flowed in OMET to attend demonstrations on its entire range of modular, multi-process printing presses and watch ‘live’ the latest innovations specifically dedicated to the label and packaging market. Japanese, Indians, Arabs, Latin Americans, Europeans in general and Italians crowded the three days at the headquarters of OMET in Lecco, Italy. Many decided to include also a visit to the nearby customer who owns an XFlex X6 with the combination of flexo and digital inkjet. The excellent print performance on all the machines conquered the audience and convinced three companies to sign a contract for as many hybrid flexo/offset XFlex X6 and ‘full flexo’ XFlex X4. OMET event featured two recent innovations worthy of note: the double unwinder on XFlex X4, which is available across the range, and the flat-bed hot foil and embossing integrated in-line on the XFlex X6 offset with 3 UV flexo units, 5 offset sleeve groups, cold foil on rail, rotary die-cutting and the ‘Rock ‘n’ Roll’ matrix rewinder. The double unwinder is a semi-automatic unwinding system for ultra-fast change of the printing substrate; it saves several minutes in the changeover process and increases the productivity and profitability of the machine with any type of run. For what concerns the flat-bed hot foil, the great news is the short time that was needed to OMET’s technical staff to tune it for work on the XFlex X6 offset, immediately obtaining

50

June 2014

quality level and register performance higher than any tests previously performed on machines not OMET. The flat-bed hot stamping and embossing is characterized by superior quality and this same quality is now perfectly integrated on OMET’s rotary machines for printing and finishing in one pass. With reference to JetPlus, OMET’s inkjet digital unit, the company acknowledges to have concluded the test phase on the first machine, which has already been producing for a few months at a label converter located near Lecco, and opens the possibility to order it from Labelexpo Americas 2014. During the event, the machine was printing several jobs demonstrating the simplicity of job and die-cutting exchange. The whole operation was eased by the presence of Monotwin Cut, the die-cutting system patented by OMET that secure high speeds of operation and quick changeovers since there is no need to replace the magnetic cylinder, and whose adjustments are completely automated with respect to both digital and flexo printing. Next to the new XFlex X6 equipped with offset with sleeves groups and XFlex X4, entry-level machine with superior electronics coupled to traditional, though revised, printing cylinders, OMET was presenting Varyflex V2, multi-technology modular platform dedicated to the printing of flexible packaging – here with the combination flexo and gravure – and one ‘full flexo’ XFlex X6.

All the machines have shown great flexibility, which has always been at the base of OMET’s technological choices. Work with an OMET’s printing press means to rely on the experience of a company whose objective is to support the converters with modular, rapidly re-configurable and multi-application solutions and with productivity levels suiting each customer’s actual needs. The desire to offer the greatest efficiency translates into tested and guaranteed solutions that offer all-in-one pass printing of the simplest to the most difficult jobs, quick job changeovers involving great savings, and the utmost print consistency, for high quality and repeatable results. The companies which extended their support to the event include: Asahi Photoproducts,Avery Dennison, ACM Carcano, Erhardt+Leimer, IST Metz, Kurz, Rotometrics, Praxair, Simec Group, Rossini, Tesa, Ultralen,Vetaphone and Zeller+Gmelin.

FINAT announces winners of first Recycling Awards Competition Hagmaier Etiketten and Unilever recycling efforts honoured at congress. FINAT, the international association for the (self-adhesive) labelling industry, announced the winners of the first FINAT Recycling Awards Competition during its annual congress in Monaco.

Converter Category Winner In the converter category, the winner Hagmaier Etiketten & Druck GmbH impressed the jury with the high recycling rates for both paper and film liner, the communication efforts made both inside and outside of the company, and with the solutions offered for other secondary materials. Finally, by offering customers take back of spent liner, the company not only demonstrates responsibility for its own secondary materials, but helps others as well.

End-user Category Winner The end-user category saw a number of impressive entries, but in the end Unilever

edged out the others based on the company’s clear dedication to a zero waste to landfill policy. Not only is this clearly communicated on the company’s website and in its sustainability report, but it is also being reflected in Unilever’s long history in liner recycling and its impressive liner recycling figures.

Jury honours recycling efforts FINAT established a jury of international experts that was chaired by Jacques van Leeuwen, former FINAT recycling consultant and industry veteran. “With the growing number of recycling solutions available today, we decided that the time was right to launch a FINAT Recycling Award,” said Jacques Van Leeuwen. “This award brings recognition to the recycling efforts made by these companies and helps to promote the best practices in liner recycling.”

The jury was delighted by both the quality and the quantity of the entries, especially for the first edition of the competition. The 11 entries reflected a total of well over 1000 tonnes of recycled film and paper liner, as well as a significant amount of recycled matrix and other secondary material. This clearly demonstrates that the industry is stepping up to the challenge to recover these valuable materials. “While our own efforts to promote recycling are valuable,” said Mark Macaré, Recycling Project Manager at FINAT, “nothing speaks louder than the experience of companies which actually have their release liner recycled.”

Second Soma Flexo Conference enjoys success Soma Engineering drew an audience of over 160 at its May 2014 Flexo Conference held at its Soma Globe Training and Demonstration facility in Lanskroun, CZ. Attendees were comprised of senior management personnel from printing and converting companies from around the world as well as industry co-suppliers, the trade press and two delegations from China. As a result of the success of this and its 2013 program, the Flexo Conference is set to become a regular annual fixture in the Soma calendar. The spotlight was shared with speakers from various flexographic printing technologies who gave presentations on the latest innovations in their respective fields that included effective 4C colour Pantone reproduction from PPP, saving money through anilox roll consistency, Apex, Smart App technology to meet 2014 EU standards for packaging from Reproflex and plate technology bench marking, Chespa. An afternoon session covered presentations from the perspective of a flexo printer and a brand owner, BUDVAR, preceded by an overview of the new Optima press by Soma Marketing Manager, Petr Blasko who explained the reasons behind the development of this, narrow/mid web printing solution. “Our research has shown that the flexo printing market wants consistent quality of 70 lines per cm (177 lines per inch) with as short a set-up time as possible. It is difficult for printers to produce short runs on wide web presses and remain competitive. We believe the Optima, with its new design concept offers a more competitive solution,

particularly as a supplement to an existing wide web printing operation. The Optima offers reduced running costs compared with running a like for like job on a 1300mm press. In addition, the new design concept reflects the new trend in value added packaging offering press customisation according to specific customer needs.” The Optima uses all the sophisticated components as found on Soma’s wide web presses including Bosh Rexroth servo drives to reduce energy costs, JDF intuitive menus and job reporting, Falcon impression system with no marks, InkFix colour matching and Fast blade doctor blade technology. Additional cost savings are achieved through the use of one litre volume ink cartridges where reduced coverage is required for colours such as expensive

metallics. Constructed from one solid single block frame the press offers maximum rigidity at high speeds up to 300 m/min and ergonomically divided work stations for print and unwind/rewind operations. Mr Blasko adds, “We are not over-looking the possibility of aiming the Optima, not only as a solution for wide web flexible packaging, but also for the narrow web label printing industry. We can foresee the possibility of high speed printing label and packaging substrates on an 820mm wide model by splitting into two 400mm wide webs and adding various off-line finishing options such as embossing, foiling and other decorative and converting applications.” The three day program was rounded off with a presentation by ex flexo printer, Nick Crow, demonstrations of the Soma Flex Optima and Premia flexographic printing presses and was preceded by a tour of Prague and celebratory boat trip. Copies of all presentations can be supplied on request. Located in Lanskroun, Czech Republic, SOMA Engineering designs and manufactures high quality printing and converting machines for a wide variety of industries. Its portfolio encompasses CI flexographic presses, slitter/rewinders, laminators, mounter-proofers, sheeters, die cutters and special purpose machines. The company serves an international market with representation and distribution channels throughout the world.

Avery expands Craft Beer portfolio to help brewers stand out in growing market “The Avery Dennison Craft Beer portfolio allows brewers to create a label that is as distinctive as their beer, enhancing differentiation and preference while ensuring they present the desired image to the consumer exactly as they intended”

Label and Packaging Materials has expanded its Craft Beer portfolio with eight new label constructions, including a semigloss paper with a wet-strength additive that delivers added protection against peeling and tearing.

The number of North American craft breweries grew 15 percent in 2013, according to the Brewers Association. To help this rapidly growing market segment meet its branding needs, Avery Dennison

“The Avery Dennison Craft Beer portfolio allows brewers to create a label that is as distinctive as their beer, enhancing differentiation and preference while ensuring they present the desired image to the

consumer exactly as they intended,” said Laura Clark, global marketing director, beverage, Avery Dennison Label and Packaging Materials. “As sales of craft beer continue to grow and new competition enters the market, it’s important to distinguish one’s product in every respect.” The Avery Dennison Craft Beer portfolio consists of paper and film materials with adhesives that stay on surfaces with heavy condensation, giving brewers the freedom to employ unique label shapes and the dynamic printing and finishing capabilities enabled by pressure-sensitive technology. Brewers can also benefit from the faster changeovers, reduced waste and easier clean-up associated with pressure-sensitive labels. The addition of a material with a wet-strength additive improves peel and tear resistance, keeping labels intact after being submerged in an ice bucket or cooler. AC Golden, a small batch brewer and brand incubator in Colorado, is using Avery Dennison labeling to strengthen the image of its barrel-aged brew, Framboise Noir. The company chose Avery Dennison Cherry Veneer, which is made with real wood, to tell the story of the beer’s aging process. “Just as the wood barrels add complexity and illuminate the flavors in the beer, the wood label illuminates the most intriguing points of our brand story,” said Glenn Knippenberg, president and co-founder of AC Golden. “The label reflects our product’s barrel aging process and also signals to craft beer drinkers that our product is handcrafted for a unique experience.” Avery Dennison is one of the leaders in labeling and packaging materials and solutions. The company’s applications and technologies are an integral part of products used in every major market and industry. With operations in more than 50 countries and 26,000 employees worldwide, Avery Dennison serves customers with insights and innovations that help make brands more inspiring and the world more intelligent. Headquartered in Glendale, California, the company reported sales from continuing operations of $6.1 billion in 2013.

EFI’s Packaging installed base shows sizable growth Momentum continues after doubling of Radius ERP new customer acquisition rate EFI announced continued, successful momentum among customers in packaging production, led by a significant increase in EFI Radius ERP software installations and new UV and LED inkjet printer sales that will give customers digital converting opportunities in corrugated, folding carton and flexible packaging markets. The number of net new Radius customers doubled year-over-year between 2012 and 2013. Distinct Packabilities, Shepherdsville, Ky.; Hub Labels, Hagerstown, Md.; K-1 Packaging Group, City of Industry, Calif.; Netpak Packaging, Montreal; and several additional businesses added Radius systems last year. Since then, EFI’s Radius group has witnessed continued momentum working with converters interested in building efficiencies and reducing costs using the industry’s leading packaging ERP platform. The continued growth in the Radius installed base comes from converters of all size and types, from smaller, single-plant implementations to large-scale, multiplant and multinational deployments.

A strong evolution in packaging technology and a ‘spectacular’ ERP One EFI customer, Alex Elezaj, chief operating officer of Center Line, Mich.based Whitlam Label, notes that the ERP advantages with Radius software reflect the overall positive experience Whitlam has seen working with EFI. “Technology has evolved tremendously in the last five years with EFI,” said Elezaj. “Not only has the company provided us inkjet digital printing capabilities with an EFI Jetrion press, the company’s EFI Radius ERP has been just a spectacular program for us.” EFI customers are expanding their investment in packaging technology beyond the increase in Radius ERP deployments. While much of the expansion comes from traditional converters bolstering their operations, commercial printing and signage firms are also making strategic purchases to establish profitable packaging operations. In response to the demand, EFI has continued to develop its portfolio to include more bestin-class packaging hardware and software.

EFI’s expanded offerings in the packaging market include: •

Corrugated and folding carton packaging applications using the EFI VUTEk® HS100 Pro high-speed inkjet press and EFI’s new material edge guide (MEG) system. New, greener flexible packaging and label production capabilities with the launch of the LED inkjet EFI Jetrion® 4950LX narrow-web press. Technology from the April 2014 acquisition of Rhapso Group, manufacturer of one of the world’s leading software products for corrugated packaging production scheduling, PC-TOPP.

“The continued growth and interest EFI is seeing in this market reflects our ongoing commitment to be a valued partner for businesses that want to take advantage of the accelerating opportunities in packaging,” said Frank Mallozzi, senior vice president, worldwide sales and marketing, EFI. “We are very proud to work with many of the world’s best packaging converters and, as always, we are committed to helping them grow profits, reduce waste and cut costs using the most innovative digital printing and workflow technologies available.”

Connecting converters to new workflow advantages The improvements customers made last year implementing Radius systems was followed by strong momentum with EFI’s January 2014 Connect users group event. Connect had record attendance, including the highestever number of Radius users. During Connect, EFI Radius’s product management team shared initial details on a new version of the Radius ERP software that incorporates technologies EFI has developed or acquired over the past year. Available this month, EFI Radius version 15.1 offers new features and enhancements, including a mobile CRM module; improved scheduling with EFI’s world-class PrintFlow® plant optimization software; web-based, EFI SmartLinc multi-carrier shipping features; and an EFI Radius customer web portal.

“This is an exciting time for EFI and our customers,” according to David Taylor, general manager, EFI Radius. “With our strong track record of smart acquisitions and internal R&D, EFI Radius customers are able to benefit from improvements in our software platform that support increased profits through cost reduction, higher productivity and improved workflow.”

EFI inkjet extends the range and sustainability of digital converting Packaging converters are also increasingly turning to EFI for digital printing solutions that make short- to medium-volume production faster, more efficient and more profitable. To meet increased demand for larger-format digital technologies that offer a better return on investment, EFI has improved the packaging capabilities of its VUTEk inkjet products. Future improvements, including continued expansion of EFI’s advanced, LED-curing inkjet technology, will give converters even more digital packaging printing opportunities. And, in EFI’s Jetrion product line - the leading inkjet press technology for the converting space - the new Jetrion 4950LX LED press prints on a broader range of label substrates and gives users the ability to produce flexible packaging as well as labels. The press’s “cool cure” LED platform uses significantly less energy, reduces waste, and saves resources and money with longer-lasting LED lamps, all of which makes it a greener, more cost-effective product that meets converters’ needs for sustainable, profitable printing. According to Deb Warner, founder and president of the first U.S. company to install the EFI Jetrion 4950LX press - Columbia Tenn.-based Graphic Label Solutions - the press’s green production benefits are important. “The brands we work with are all setting goals for sustainability, and they want suppliers who share that commitment,” said Warner. “When I first saw EFI Jetrion inkjet technology, I knew it would help us offer high quality while reducing waste. LED is the missing piece I need to really address what our clients are looking for from a sustainability perspective.”
