FROM THE EDITORS’ DESK Dear Readers, Landa Nanography had been eagerly awaited by one and all for different reasons but not without reasons. The reasons are as wide as curiosity to belief. Both, the curiosity and the belief, have been established at the recent drupa. The technology was ‘the talk of the town’, so to say. No drupa visitor remained untouched by the popular cliché – small (i.e. nano) is big. It made so much of impact that the sales figures touched an enormous 450 million Euros. While the industry in general is waiting for the real time results, that would surely be pouring in soon, the early adopters are already basking in the glory of a perceived revolutionary technology in the world of printing. The results of quality, applications, material etc. were as much obvious to the naked eyes that witnessed the technology live at drupa. The print cost claims are too quite impressive. They will certainly be weighed against many factors including the cost of investment. The inventor of revolutionary Indigo is at it again with Nanography. The Dusseldorf exhibition has kept its 4-yearly cycle and quelled the industry reservations about the suitability of the earlier decision to reduce the cycle to 3-yearly one. Obviously, it is the largest industry event; as large as to make it necessary for visitors to have pre-decided visits at booths of choice. 11 days aren’t enough if one wants to see them all at the show. Nevertheless, the 11 days were more than enough to decide the future course of print media industry. In our post-drupa issue, we have reviewed key technologies showcased at the German fair. We are sure our visiting Indian friends must have made the best of their drupa visit. The ever happening industry will be experiencing the benefits in the coming months and even years. We have summarized diverse solutions presented or showcased by global exhibitors covering the extensive areas and segments of print, its technology and applications etc. You have to go through the inside pages to know how: Kodak generated significant industry buzz; HP unleashed Digital or revealed flexible On-demand Book Production; Agfa addressed growth; Esko innovated for better packaging; Xerox put inkjet within reach; Canon pushed Digital boundaries; Heidelberg redefined peak performance or grew with Digital; Konica Minolta entered Industrial Printing market; Goss optimized print drying; Insight Communications scored; TCPL complimented its packaging fleet; manroland showcased evolution of print; and much more. Also read comments and experiences of drupa visitors from India. Enjoy reading and keep in touch! - Jasvinder Singh, Sub-editor

Innovations for better Packaging and Print A series of must see innovations by Esko, Enfocus and X-Rite Pantone at drupa 2016.
Esko’s showcase along with X-Rite Pantone, Enfocus and MediaBeacon was spread out across six Inspiration Zones where visitors were taken through each step of a typical packaging production workflow. In addition, Enfocus offerings were presented in the booth and Pantone occupied a dedicated zone to display and sell its well-known Pantone guides and tools for colour inspiration and design.
Brands, Specification & Briefing Zone This zone focused on the holistic packaging production process from idea to shelf, connecting stakeholders including brands, designers, premedia and converters; and integrating with business systems such as MIS, ERP, PIM, MRM and Content Management. On view was WebCenter, the packaging management solution that streamlines activities from specification and design through production. Users share files with all stakeholders for approval and collaboration. In the new version, they are able to view 3D designs, including transparency and print finishing effects, using a standard web browser on a desktop computer or mobile device.
At drupa, Esko showcased a wide range of innovations together with sister company X-Rite Pantone and subsidiaries Enfocus and MediaBeacon.

Integrated with WebCenter was Esko’s MediaBeacon Digital Asset Management system. MediaBeacon makes assets available in the right version at the right time to the right stakeholders in the packaging workflow. This integration supports better design, helps protect brand integrity, ensures regulatory compliance and speeds up time to market. X-Rite showcased new tools that allow brand owners to select and communicate colour so that it can be
consistently achieved across multiple substrates, printing processes, and locations. Featured solutions included X-Rite’s PantoneLIVE digital colour management; Esko WebCenter for project management; and MediaBeacon, the digital asset management company acquired by Esko in 2015.
Design Zone Esko’s design solutions are about making packaging and display designs better, and faster. Also highlighted was connecting design with production/ logistics for faster time to market and the ability to ensure achievable designs prior to the expense of production. One of the highlights was ArtiosCAD 16, the CAD design editor that makes design and preproduction of multi-part packaging and POP displays simpler, more intelligent and productive. With ArtiosCAD, users can avoid guesswork, waste and errors. For sign and display producers, ArtiosCAD 16 offers access to an extensive online library of proven parametric design templates. Sign and display converters use these designs to produce complex designs easy and fast, taking away the need for 3D design expertise. Studio Store Visualizer 16 now integrates with planogram systems to create and populate visually stunning virtual 3D stores in minutes rather than days. Studio Store Visualizer, co-developed with VTales, makes it a lot easier for users to create and test package designs and ultimately reduces time to market. Visitors navigated a highly realistic virtual store, and interact with the packaging in stunning 3D. Other featured solutions included Pantone Color

Fujifilm’s water-based ink for flexible packaging At the recent drupa, it also announced addition of new processless plate – SUPERIA ZD – to the Fujifilm SUPERIA product range Fujifilm Corporation exhibited reference models of a pigment ink for water-based inkjet, to be used in flexible packaging, at drupa2016. Fujifilm is commercialising various inkjet related products under the “FUJIFILM Inkjet Technology” brand, a brand concentrating various Fujifilm technologies, and has introduced the B2 size digital press, the Jet Press 720S, originally made for commercial printing in the graphic arts industry. Fujifilm has further developed the technology used in the Jet Press 720S to create an ink technology for water-based inkjet capable of inkjet printing on flexible packaging film. The bleeding of inkjet ink is an issue in the non-absorbent film substrates used in the flexible packaging. However, the application of “Rapic Technology” created during the development of the Jet Press 720S enables an ink droplet to retain its stability where it has landed, and clear image reproduction is made possible by combining with proprietary undercoating technology. The combination of these technologies with Fujifilm’s highdefinition Samba printheads has allowed productivity of more than 30 metres per minute to be achieved while printing at 1200dpi high-definition, in full colour,
enabling compatibility for digitalisation for the reverse printing of flexible packaging. A print sample of water-based ink was exhibited at drupa in the “FUJIFILM Inkjet Technology” zone. An inkjet print sample of a shiny metallic ink currently under development was exhibited as well. The development of metallic ink meets the increasing demand for indoor signs, packages and label printing with metallic textures to give a luxurious look. Other exhibits included latest technologies in “inkjet printheads”, “inks”, “image optimisation” and various samples showcasing the possibilities for expansion in the digital print market, including commercial printing, wide-format, package printing and numerous other fields in the industry.
Addition of new processless SUPERIA ZD – to the SUPERIA range Fujifilm also announced the launch of a new processless plate, SUPERIA ZD, which is available as part of Fujifilm’s SUPERIA portfolio following drupa 2016. Fujifilm has built on the advanced technologies behind its successful SUPERIA PRO-T3 processless plate to make SUPERIA ZD compatible with UV ink and ideal for longer run jobs, while
offering all the reliability and stability features of SUPERIAPRO-T3. These advances open up the benefits of processless plates to a much wider range of printers than ever before. The SUPERIA ZD processless plate incorporates three exciting new technologies –MGZ, HDN and s-HDS: MGZ is a new graining structure, which has been added to Fujifilm’s MGV technology used in the SUPERIA PRO-T3 plate, to ensure the optimum ink/water balance on press. This new plate structure enhances the adhesion between the substrate and the exposed image, further improving the robustness of the plate during printing. In order to ensure compatibility with UV inks, a new accelerator has been introduced. As a result, optical energy is used to efficiently cross-link the binders to produce a high density network (HDN). This HDN technology ensures the exposed image has a higher resistance against UV inks and related press chemicals. Fujifilm’s newly developed “s-HDS” technology optimises the water holding properties of the surface of the non-image area. This enhances the resistance to toning and improves ink/water balance while retaining the fast on-press development characteristics of SUPERIA PRO-T3. Like the SUPERIA PRO-T3 plate, the new SUPERIA ZD plate contributes to resource savings in five key areas: material, labour, energy, environment and water, while also offering the additional benefits of longer run lengths, web press suitability and enhanced chemical resistance – meaning that it is suitable for the latest UV press technologies including LED-UV and H-UV printing.

Hybrid Offset Printing impresses at drupa Harjinder Singh of Swastika Prinwell found drupa 2016 better than drupa 2012. “I found drupa 2016 more effective & impressive than 2012 event. This time similar technologies were put in the same hall that helped to view & better understand the technologies. It was useful in saving precious time for visitors and they could focus better on the technologies they require,” he shares. He found Hybrid Offset Printing from all manufacturers as most impressive at
drupa. He considers Benny Landa’s Nano technology quite interesting but is still waiting for its usefulness in longer runs. Laser DieCutting machine was another area of interest for Harjinder. He has all praises for Heidelberg XL series Offset press, “It has crossed all limits of automations to the extent that it not only uses CTP profile to pre-set ink & water controls at the time of installing plates but also self registers the job. This would exclude the requirement of an extraordinary workmanship of highly trained operator to print high quality jobs.” Harjinder liked the HP stall at drupa the most. He’s soon adding software related to auto job preparation for CtP, costing, preparing job ticket and stock details etc. to his set up. He made the most of his drupa visit and toured London. Apart from this, he looked a bit concerned about the next drupa participation. “Next drupa (in 2020) would be held in the last week of June. By that time, school vacations end and also it is usually peak rainy season at that time. Hope the organisers would have thought about this,” he concludes.
It was obviously an experience worth remembering Varun Sule, Padma Prints visited drupa for the first time. He was with his father and had a wonderful experience of the visit. “It was an amazing experience. The technologies on display blew my mind away. It was obviously an experience worth remembering,” says an excited Varun. “I remained there for four days. It was not enough to visit all the humongous halls. I found a lot of products interesting at the show,” he continues. He is pretty impressed by Landa Nano Technology and the display by the company at drupa. “I particularly liked the stalls of Landa and its machinery,” praises Varun. Varun made the best of this opportunity by travelling across Germany and neighbouring Belgium and France.

ebeam introduces the mass personalization of food packaging ebeam Technologies, a brand of the COMET Group, has launched the ebeam Inkjet Dryer (EID), a new energy-curing system that enables food brands to mass personalize products via food-safe inkjet printing. Major consumer brands recognize the tremendous potential of digital printing for personalizing product packaging to act instantly on consumer trends, but concerns about food contamination by toxic ultraviolet (UV) photoinitiators prevent the use of inkjet printers for food packaging by most organizations. Previous printing technologies have resulted in more than 100 incidents being reported by the EU’s Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF) where the UV photoinitiators have contaminated food after migrating from the packaging into the food. ebeam Technologies has not only eliminated the need for UV photoiniators in inkjet inks, it has miniaturized electron beam hardware so that it can be easily integrated into inkjet printers to cure new, commercially available ebeam-curable inks. Ian Bland, VP Business Development, ebeam Technologies commented: “It has been the dream of leading brands to target their messaging to the individual in real time. Displays on packages are no longer just science fiction, but are still many years away. Imagine including the name of the local farm the milk came from or your darling’s name on a package of Valentine’s Day chocolates. Only digital printing offers this flexibility. Unfortunately, brand-owners and their packaging supplier have not implemented this innovation. The main reason has been the availability of food-safe, jettable inks. All
this is about to change. As of today, EIDequipped inkjet printers eliminate that barrier to adoption. Inks are available. Hardware is available. If this industry behaves like others connected to ebeam, it will be a race to roll this out as fast as possible. Now the only question is, who will move fastest? We look forward to meeting the innovators at drupa.” The ebeam Inkjet Dryer (EID) is a compact, sealed ebeam lamp that produces a precisely controlled beam of electrons to instantly cure ebeam inks. The EID is being demonstrated for the first time at the drupa 2016 trade fair, where it is integrated in-line with PPSI’s DICE inkjet printer using ebeamcurable inks provided by Collins Inkjet.
Background to risk of photoinitiator food contamination While harmless in other printing applications, the photoinitiators used to catalyze the polymerization process that cures UV inks are classified as toxic migrants because they can leak from the substrate into food. Energy-curing with electron beam eliminates the need for photoinitators in ink formulations. The precise and stable output of ebeam hardware also makes the print process more predictable, dependable, and energy efficient. To overcome the dangers of photoinitiator migration and to realize the dream of industrialized individualization, ebeam
Technologies has pioneered the use of ebeam curing in inkjet printers. Whereas ebeam curing was previously only available in the form of bulky, imposing, standalone systems, ebeam Technologies has changed the game with a radical innovation: a compact, sealed ebeam “lamp”. This innovation has led to an explosion in new applications as ebeam technology can now be integrated into various machines with ease. The new EID is just one an example of this. The heart of the EID is a compact ebeam lamp which operates without a vacuum pump and can be replaced in minutes. Visitors to drupa 2016 explored how ebeam technology is revolutionizing food safety and process efficiency at the ebeam Technologies stand in Hall 5, # A40. ebeam Technologies were in action throughout drupa 2016 at their partner exhibits: • Offset ebeam curing in the Varyflex V2 Offset 850 press at the OMET exhibit (Hall 3, D-90 1 & 2) • Inline ebeam flexo curing and lamination in a Onyx X5 4.0 Evolution 8-station central impression (CI) flexo press at the Uteco exhibit (Hall 10, A18) • ebeam-curable inks at the Collins Inkjet exhibit (Hall 3, C50)

the Speedmaster XL-based feeder only allows good sheets into the delivery pile. The operator can also output test sheets directly to the control panel at the push of a button in order to visually check their quality. “The Heidelberg Primefire 106 combines the best of both worlds and is the first commercially available, industrial digital printing system in 70 x 100 format. This opens up completely new market segments both for our customers and Heidelberg. Folding carton producers in particular develop new digitally driven business models and thus improve their competitiveness. Heidelberg now offers a first-rate solution to do exactly that”, says Stephan Plenz, Member of the Management Board responsible for Heidelberg Equipment, during the presentation of the Primefire 106 at drupa 2016. Heidelberg is also setting new standards with the Primefire 106 in terms of possible print jobs and applications. To illustrate this, the company showcased a wide range of examples live during its presentation of the new system. With these applications, Heidelberg is addressing specific topics of relevance to the industry, for example web-to-print, multichannel publishing, personalized short runs, or digital packaging and label printing, displaying them in a visually appealing manner with expensively designed print samples, and in so doing giving customers something to talk about. “Our shows on the Primefire 106, taking place four times per day, showcase the variety and variability of industrial digital printing. We look forward to in-depth discussions with our customers on the completely new business opportunities opened up by this system,” says Jason Oliver, Head of Business Area Digital at Heidelberg.

June 2016
The world premiere of the new drupa-generation Speedmaster XL 106 marks the start of a new era in industrial print production. For this new generation of presses, Heidelberg combined its expertise in automation and ergonomic operation, and is thus able to amply satisfy the requirements of commercial, packaging and label printers. Against a background of ever-declining run lengths and more frequent job changes, what is needed in order to be competitive in the market is fast, automated, reliable and efficient production. With the new Speedmaster XL 106, new features such as intelligent assistance systems and parallel, automated processes are lifting industrial print production to a whole new performance level. The greatest focus is on ease of operation and integrated, digitized processes, extending all the way to autonomous printing. “Our drupa motto is “Simply Smart”. We show what a fully integrated and networked print shop – the “smart print shop” of the future – looks like, and how we achieve the perfect harmonization of equipment, services and consumables,” explains Stephan Plenz, member of the Management Board responsible for Equipment at Heidelberg. “The new drupa-generation Speedmaster will herald a paradigm shift in the operation of sheetfed offset presses. We are evolving from a “Push to Start” approach to a “Push to Stop” philosophy. Whereas today the operator must actively start processes on the machine, in future the machine will, wherever possible, do this itself. It will automatically work through the queue of print jobs.
And it will do this using the ideal, shortest makeready operation, with maximum net productivity as the result. The operator then only has to intervene if the process needs correcting.”
Greatly reduced makeready times with Hycolor Multidrive In order to achieve this high level of automation with the Speedmaster XL 106, the developers at Heidelberg have turned innovative ideas into reality. One such new feature is the “Hycolor Multidrive”, which can operate the inking and dampening units independently from the main drive. For example, the inking units are washed while the main drive is responsible for changing the coating plates, or washing the rubber blankets and impression cylinders. What’s more, individual inking units can be shut down if they are not needed. The inking units do not have to be disengaged for this, but always remain connected to the main drive train. On the one hand, this saves on time spent engaging and disengaging, while on the other hand the drive system remains stable against vibrations – regardless of how many and which inking units are shut down. The coating unit now also features more extensive automation. With “AutoPlate Coating Pro”, a fully automated coating plate change was presented at drupa. Further optimized washup programs allow even faster washing times for rubber blankets and impression cylinders. AutoPlate XL 2, the second generation of simultaneous plate changing, has been further accelerated and also runs completely independently and parallel to rubber blanket and impression cylinder washing. With the second generation of the Prinect Inpress Control 2 spectral inline colour measuring system, the time until first measurement has been halved, while optimizing the control algorithms has achieved a further 20 percent reduction in waste.
A decisive step ahead with Intellistart 2 Heidelberg has invested a great deal in simpler
pressideas/ event review
operation and digital integration. The foundations were laid with the presentation of the Intellistart press operation and the Wallscreen at drupa 2008. “Based on this experience, we are now going to exhibit the next generation at drupa 2016. The new Intellistart 2 and Wallscreen XL, in combination with our new automation possibilities, are set to permanently alter the landscape of industrial offset printing,” declares Stephan Plenz. “Once again, Heidelberg will redefine the peak performance class.” The heart of the new-generation Speedmaster XL 106 is the Prinect Press Center XL 2 machine control station. The unique and patented Intellistart 2 software automatically organizes the optimum job change, independently initiates automated makeready processes, and gives the operator clear instructions when manual intervention is required. To ensure the operator has a complete overview, Intellistart 2 has been integrated into the new Wallscreen XL and is divided into four areas. Jobs released for a machine are listed in a clear, easy-to-understand “Job Queue”, and can be moved using drag and drop. Intellistart 2 automatically works through these jobs in the defined order. By clicking on a job in the queue, the adjacent “Process View” section of the Wallscreen XL shows which processes Intellistart 2 suggests, in order to change from the previously planned job to this one. The “Intelliguide” timeline display shows in real time which makeready processes are currently running, how long they have yet to run, and also when the operator has to manually intervene – to change the ink, for example. However, fully autonomous production is only possible if the decision to start production is also taken automatically. This is done by the “Quality Assist” software feature. Once all the necessary makeready processes have been completed, Intellistart 2 begins production. Here, Quality Assist recognizes when the sheet has reached the defined quality parameters, and automatically commences good sheet production. “All customers who have seen this so far are delighted,” confirms Stephan Plenz. “In principle, it’s like a navigation system in a car. Intellistart 2 automatically calculates the
fastest route from A to B, and guides the operator. And we even go one step further. Like in autonomous driving, today we are already capable of printing jobs with a similar structure completely autonomously. The advantages are obvious: printing can be more easily planned and is more effective, and the operator is able to master a high job volume over a long period of time.”
Field test expectations exceeded Feedback from field tests of the newgeneration Speedmaster XL 106 is extremely positive. For example, the colordruck company in Baiersbronn, a European technology leader in the packaging sector, has been producing on a Speedmaster XL 106 six-colour press with coating unit and AutoPlate Pro plate changer from the new drupa generation since April of this year. “We have consistently focused on quality and reliability,” explains Managing Director Martin Bruttel. “To do this, we need the most modern and innovative equipment on the market. With the new Speedmaster XL 106 we are taking another major step in terms of increased efficiency.” For colordruck, the high level of press automation, in particular, moves them one large step ahead in terms of higher throughput and therefore profitability, while also ensuring more reliable production. In packaging printing, washing the inking unit, when changing from a dark to a light ink, is very important. “With the new Hycolor Multidrive, the inking units or even the rubber blankets and impression cylinders can now get washed while the plates are being changed. This noticeably cuts makeready times, even for complex job changes,” Martin Bruttel confirms. “Our operators are delighted with the ease of operation of the Speedmaster XL 106. The new Intellistart 2 user software and the Prinect Press Center XL 2 machine control station help us tremendously to produce our jobs quickly and efficiently,” summarizes Martin Bruttel. For several months now, commercial printer Aumüller in Regensburg has already been producing with a new drupa-generation Speedmaster XL 106 eight-colour press with perfecting. With the web-to-print business model, both the shortest possible makeready times and efficient production are key factors for the company, in order to ensure even faster and more reliable delivery – whether for small, medium or long runs. Frequent job changes, in particular, need to be processed
intelligently. “Thanks to the high level of automation and Intellistart 2, our productivity has been further raised considerably, and we can set up a four-over-four job in under three minutes. The new AutoPlate XL 2 and the new option of washing rubber blankets at the same time as plate changing save us a huge amount of time and increase productivity,” Christian and Stefan Aumüller agree. “Our operators immediately got to grips with the intuitive operating concept – operation is now as simple and self-explanatory as a smartphone or tablet.” The operator controls and monitors workflows and gets the printing plates ready for the next printing forms. He maintains an overview thanks to the Prinect Press Center XL 2. “The press defines the work cycle by processing the jobs that are released for production on the press virtually automatically,” conclude the two Managing Directors. Now, over a period of nine months, 121,000 plates have already been changed and 15,000 jobs produced on the new Speedmaster XL 106-8-P.
Dynamic duo of high net productivity and cost efficiency “We regard the digitized, industrialized print shop as a prerequisite for successful future business models in our sector,” asserts Stephan Plenz. For this reason, Heidelberg simultaneously exhibited two Speedmaster XL 106 presses of the new drupe-generation at its stand in Hall 1. On the Speedmaster XL 106 six-colour press with double coating, packaging and label printers could see just how simple, uncomplicated, reliable and extremely fast production and setup of jobs with high-quality finishing can be. The Speedmaster XL 106 eight-colour perfecting press is aimed at commercial and webto-print printers, who face the challenge of frequent job changes. Furthermore, this press features innovative DryStar LED drying technology. The dry sheet enables the print-free areas otherwise required for sheet brakes in straight printing and perfecting mode to be dispensed with. And with smaller sheet sizes, two percent can be saved on the cost of paper, and the sheets are immediately ready for postpress. Both machines are integrated into the Prinect print shop workflow along the value chain, and work with Saphira consumables, which are ideally adapted to suit stringent process requirements.

CRON EZcolor makes short-run offset easier profitable CRON demonstrated a new inking system for sheetfed offset presses at drupa. The new EZcolor system not only reduces waste and enhances quality but also brings down the point at which short-run offset becomes profitable. In this way, EZcolor is positioned to challenge digital print’s established stronghold on runs of just a few copies. “EZcolor is a brand new technology linking prepress and press,” states CRON’s CEO and Founder, Mike Xiang. “It takes us one step closer to CRON’s Holy Grail, zero waste and perfect colour. In addition to improving print quality and consistency, we predict that paper waste could be reduced to the equivalent of digital press levels with savings of up to 90%. EZcolor makes it easier to reach better compliance with ISO standards.” Inside the EZcolor enclosure, high performance, micro-pumped ink jets exactly meter ink directly onto the first forme roller. Control of the jets is via CIP3/CIP4 data working in conjunction with an Expert database which predicts the exact ink demand under specific printing conditions. The resulting control over ink volume, to a tolerance of +/-1%,keeps a balance of ink-feed and consumption, hence ensuring a higher colour consistency on all printed jobs. Also guided by the Expert database, precise pre-inking on each press unit ensures that makeready is exceptionally fast and that colour is accurate after just a few impressions. These advantages give offset users an enhanced capability to compete with digital print for low print runs.
EZcolor ensures greater accuracy for light coverage areas where minor ink variations can make dramatic visual differences to image quality as the volume of ink is exactly metred to match the density requirements for each zone of the printed signature. Full-digital ink control of EZcolor also avoids impacts from unstable conditions, such as ink viscosity, temperature, humidity, press running speed and anything that may affect ink transfer in open fountain systems. EZcolor is extremely easy to use due to its creative design and intuitive operation. The heart of the system is an enclosed manifold which replaces the cumbersome ink duct on a conventional offset press. Being enclosed, the EZcolor system eliminates ink contamination and the problems associated with open fountain systems of viscosity changes through solvent evaporation. There is also no need for an agitation system to keep the ink fluid.
With very few moving parts and ink fed under pressure, EZcolor is inherently reliable, maintaining high levels of uptime for the press. In the unlikely event of a problem, the ink nozzles are easy to clean, returning the system to full operation in a matter of minutes. “Trying to close the loop between prepress and press is increasingly common. But current solutions are not only imperfect but also unavailable to older press users,” says Derek Sizer, CRON’s Regional Director for EMEAR. “Being modular, EZcolor can be retrofitted to any offsetpress, meaning that any printer can benefit from enhanced image quality, reduced waste and dramatically shorter makeready times. And then, of course, due to the time savings, more work can be completed per shift, enhancing overall profitability of the pressroom.”

Goss International confirmed its latest collaboration with Presstek LLC at drupa. The companies are teaming up to deliver a powerful combination of Computer-to-Plate (CTP) imaging systems, eco-friendly plates, presses, service and support, specifically targeted for the commercial and newspaper printing markets. In addition, Presstek introduced a range of new prepress and plate products at drupa (hall 15, stand D59) that align perfectly Goss’ commercial and newspaper printing systems. “Both Presstek and Goss International strive for continuous advancement in our products and in the way we deliver them to our customers,” said Sparsh Bhargava, CEO, Presstek. “Goss is a significant leader in the commercial and newspaper business sectors and we are pleased that our new CTP systems and eco-friendly plate offerings fit so well with Goss presses in these markets. These innovative and compatible prepress and press systems supported by world-class service organizations will allow customers to compete at a higher level with faster productivity and increased profitability.” “The industry is changing and innovative thinking is needed from both customers and suppliers,” explained Mohit Uberoi,
CEO, Goss. “To meet the evolving needs of our customers and remain at the forefront of this industry, we need to think outside of the traditional box and ensure our product portfolio and service offering continues to provide dynamic, pioneering solutions. However, we’re not looking to reinvent the wheel. We want to utilize the strengths and expertise of those companies that we can see a partnership approach would be mutually beneficial, and most importantly, provide our customers with the best solution. This strategy has driven our long-standing collaboration with Contiweb and its partner companies, that together provide marketleading auxiliary systems, as well as the recent agreements between DG press ServiceS, Dovak Industrial Services and now, Presstek.”
Support is testament to how much we value our customers. We are planning major investments in this segment and are committed to ensuring our customers get the one-stop, lifetime support they need and that their systems operate in the most efficient, productive and reliable way, providing constant improvements and upgrades to guarantee they stay competitive.”
Goss also highlighted its continued and renewed focus on its Lifetime Support services at drupa. It highlighted its robust service dedicated to press enhancements, technical assistance, customer support and training. The focus is on strengthening customer relationships by ensuring adequate parts inventory, on-time shipment of parts and available upgrades for obsolete parts and systems.
“Traditionally, color bars require a clear space on the substrate,” explained Peter Walczak, Director Product Management, Goss. “This clear section then either requires an additional step in the production process to remove it or it is left on the finished product and can impact the design. This has been a barrier to many converters who would otherwise choose web offset due to all the quality and productivity benefits it offers. However, with our new Embedded Color Bar Control, this problem has been eliminated.”
Uberoi continued, “Goss’ focus on Lifetime
Goss’ highlight at drupa (hall 15, stand D51) also included the launch of its gamechanging Embedded Color Bar Control technology. Another industry first from Goss, this new innovation enables packaging converters to embed the color bar, used for controlling colour, registration and ink on the printed substrate, into the image on a label or packaging design.
To make the Embedded Color Bar possible, Goss has developed the smallest color bar available for both colour and register control. Between each section of color bar, an image is printed, filling in the space between each bar and therefore minimizing its impact on the finished product design. “This technology is a true innovation and will create new opportunities for our existing customers to streamline production and offer even higher value products. It will also open the door to many prospects already convinced by the advantages of web offset for packaging production,” said Walczak.

Saueressig and Merck enable print packaging with RGB
For more than 50 years, full-colour images have been produced in two ways: CMYK for print; RGB for screens. Both models are so ubiquitous that most people rarely think about other options for colour reproduction. In RGB printing, packaging can be created that has iridescent radiance. Using pigments developed by Merck, it is possible to print images of several colours directly onto a black substrate. Until now, packaging had to be printed exclusively on a background of white or of another light colour. With CMYK, a black background was achieved by overprinting the CYMK colours at full saturation. In RGB printing, the approach is completely different: full-strength red, blue, and green complement each other to produce white on a black substrate. This new technique uses highly-reflective, pearlescent colours in red, green, and blue, as well as a silver-white colour. In CMYK printing, the “K” represents a definite black that the mixture of cyan, magenta, and yellow cannot entirely achieve. The silver-white colour in RGB printing is used in a similar way. It results in a brilliant white that cannot quite be achieved by combining the RGB colours. Merck contacted the experts at Saueressig to implement RGB printing. Testing revealed that gravure printing is the ideal system for
transferring the pigments. In gravure, the volume of the ink wells can be adjusted to the colour in use with extreme precision. “Since the RGB effect pigments differ in volume from those used in normal printing, Saueressig’s RGB specialists ensure good results,” says Volker Hildering, Sales Manager for RGB Printing at Saueressig. “They have the expertise and know-how in gravure and reproduction to evaluate preliminary colour proofs from the CMYK printer and to convert them.” The effect in RGB printing is mysterious. The image appears to shimmer and to be illuminated from within. These packages stand out from the crowd at the point of sale – a new way of seeing things that has not existed before. The advantages of RGB colours are many and varied. Designers get a larger colour space, a palette of more colours and saturations, as well as a surface offering a previously unknown level of glossiness. New opportunities present themselves for designers to develop exciting packaging and to unleash their creativity. The concept for this new kind of printing emerged from a 2014 brainstorming session between creative designers and the Performance Materials Unit at Merck KGaA in Darmstadt. Their idea was to turn the standard colour model on its head. What would happen if you used RGB colours to
print on a black substrate? The realization of this thought led to many months of tests and refinements. Then, Merck succeeded in showcasing the first significant colour innovation in more than a century: a technique for RGB printing. “At Saueressig we are happy to be a part of this huge innovation in printing,” says Dr. Anna Zumbülte, Innovation Manager at Saueressig. “The RGB printing technique is still relatively new. We are expecting improvements at all stages of the process in the coming years.” Volker Hildering adds, “RGB will not supplant CMYK as a printing method. It will be an alternative to enable products to stand out from the crowd. When you take a package printed in RGB from the shelf, you’ll know that it is something special.” Saueressig and Merck showcased at drupa at their respective booths - hall 3, booth B24; and hall 12, booth C55.
First hour sale at drupa by KBA to Centrum Printing KBA sold the first large-format sheetfed offset press not even one hour after Drupa opened its doors on the first day. The Rapida
145 (sheet format 106 x 145cm) will go to Centrum Printing in Sydney, Australia, in September. This comes just two years after Centrum Printing ordered a large-format Rapida. Goss Contiweb: Optimizing Print Drying efficiency New Contiweb Fluid Applicator (CFA) technology offers significant cost benefits for web offset printers At drupa 2016, Goss International showed the latest innovation in its range of heatset drying systems. New CFA technology enhances print performance and productivity, and contributes to a better finished product. Now supplied as an option on new Ecocool and Ecoset models, the Contiweb Fluid Applicator (CFA) system is also available for retrofitting on existing installations of these models and stand-alone silicone application. The system offers significant cost benefits for web offset printers. A demonstration unit on the Goss Contiweb booth guided visitors through its breakthrough approach to the application of silicone oil and water to restore moisture to the printed web and protect against ink picking on the surface of the chill rollers. Silicone is necessary to protect the web from mechanical stress and for better runability though the folder. Apart from cutting unnecessary expense, the CFA system offers a solution to issues which might result from consumables commonly used in the drying process, according to Bert Schoonderbeek, Managing Director, Goss Contiweb. “Up until now, printers have been using ‘ready mixed’ silicone/water products,” explains Schoonderbeek. “These are provided by a wide array of chemicals and additives in different formulations and standards. They can also cause maintenance issues and contamination in the silicone mix system and folder long term. With the CFA system, we’re giving the printer back more
control and also cost benefits.” Treating the web with a silicone/water mixture (silicone and remoistening) in one process was developed by Contiweb engineers in 2004, and since then, has become considered by many high-quality print professionals to be essential in ensuring best-quality results. The combined process replaces water that has evaporated from the paper during drying to restore the original dimensions of the substrate. It also avoids web shrinkage, as well as reducing instances of cracking, curling or folding, and delivering an overall more forgiving substrate for postpress handling. The new Contiweb Fluid Applicator now introduces the ability to mix pure silicone oil with water on-the-fly within one system. By delivering a fresh mix which is used immediately, only a single agent is required as surfactant, which helps to control the
delicate balance required for maintaining uniformity and consistency of the web. The oil drops in the mixture are extremely large compared to standard silicone emulsions. The result is that the oil is not absorbed by the paper, but stays on top where it offers a much better protection. On average a reduction of 50% in silicone oil consumption is documented. In addition to the performance benefits, the new system offers considerable financial gains, including approx. 60 percent savings on the current cost of silicone, which can be equivalent to around euro 50,000 per year for the consumption associated with a 64-page press. Based on the same production model, the reduction in terms of transportation is just 15 containers versus 80 per year. The use of pure silicone oil and mixing on demand benefits the performance and longterm maintenance of the applicator and the folder. Applicator, control and drive rollers are all more lubricated, reducing incidence of contamination and improving the lifespan of components. With the Ecocool dryer, Contiweb was the first manufacturer to offer a single drying unit with integrated chill rolls, silicone application and optional remoistening. Apart from improved ergonomics, it introduced a new level of control of the web in one closed environment, bringing with it significant advantages in quality, efficiency, productivity and cost-effectiveness.

Fedrigoni presents three innovations at drupa Fedrigoni – international operator in the production and sale of high added-value papers, special supports such as plastic and metal-coated films, security products and self-adhesive items, presents this year’s three innovations, one for each business sector:
Special Papers: Splendorlux, Freelife and Old Mill Splendorlux – the collection of cast-coated high gloss papers and boards expands to 46 articles: new finishes, sizes, and colours designed specifically for the luxury packaging sector. The restyling renewed the coloured paper range: careful selection of the trendiest shades led to the launching of new crossover colours, favourites in the fashion and beauty sectors. The range of Blacks and Metalized papers, with numerous finishes, are perfect for coordinated uses, covers, cases, boxes, and shopping bags. The 11 lines in the Splendorlux collection make up one of the largest ranges of cast-coated papers and boards on the market. Freelife – the new collection of “smart” recycled papers, use cellulose only from sustainably managed forests; reduce energy and water consumption; reduce atmospheric emissions; use recycled raw materials, and give preference to non-inked recycling, which
involves less transport, less de-inking, and lower CO2 emissions into the atmosphere. Premium White is the new colour in Old Mill, the line of papers and boards made of pure ecological ECF (Elemental Chlorine Free) cellulose, certified FSC, felt-marked on both sides. Exclusive feel and good stiffness make this line an ideal support for elegant publications and prestigious libraries, as well as corporate publications such as brochures, annual reports and monographs.
Arconvert presents Immaculate Papers Arconvert (and specifically the Manter brand known for self-adhesive wine % spirits labels) presents Immaculate Papers, the new collection of coated self-adhesive papers. Designed for oil, balsamic vinegar, jar-packed food specialties, as well as packaging for high-end cosmetics, this line includes nine precious materials treated with an exclusive grease-proofing technology that permanently protects the label against grease and oil spots and keeps it from unsticking. A special plastic-free barrier treatment, added to the paper mix, repels even drops of oil that slide down the bottle neck and attack the sides of the label. This new method allows totally
creative packaging, completely protects both the front and edges, and eliminates plastics bonded to the paper. According to new EU rules, restaurants may no longer put unlabeled and unrefillable cruets or bottles of oil on tables: the label has therefore become a necessity. This innovation offers top brands of olive oil and balsamic vinegar the guarantee that labels will stay clean, and provides a qualitative association between elegant packaging and excellence of contents.
Liquid crystal threads and Vista double hologram The Fabriano Security division presents “liquid crystal” threads in five different colourchange combinations, and the “Vista”double hologram. Landa once again took center stage at drupa, taking over euro 450 million in orders for Nanographic Printing presses. An estimated 200,000 visitors thronged to the Landa stand to catch a glimpse of its 20 daily live press demos. Visitor enthusiasm translated directly into hundreds of sales meetings, with orders taken in all major geographical regions, including the Americas, Europe and Asia-Pacific. Landa reported numerous multiple-press deals, demonstrating market confidence in Landa and its Nanographic Printing presses. “drupa 2016 will be remembered as the inflection point in the industry’s transition from mechanical printing to digital. In the past, digital printing vendors had to try to convince the market that digital is the way to go. Previously it was a ‘push’ selling motion,” says Benny Landa, Chairman. “Now, for the first time, the situation has reversed. There is a very strong ‘pull’ from the market, driven by both customers and brand-owners, who are now demanding digital printing. It seems that the market leaders – in packaging, commercial printing and in publishing – have come to the realization that they simply must go digital.

Globe Print n Pack installs Esko Mumbai based company installs ArtiosCAD, DeskPack and Plato. ArtiosCAD is helping them in building 3D models to be shared with brand owners. Vasai, Mumbai based Globe Print n Pack has three production spaces across 25,000 square feet. The promotional transparent packaging producer has a successful experience of about two decades. Recently, it has commissioned Esko’s design and workflow software. With increasing success, the company sought to expedite design concepts, sampling and 3D visuals and prototypes and to develop completely new processes for their FMCG and Pharma clients. Esko’s ArtiosCAD, Deskpack and Plato software are used for this new workflow that yields greater precision and faster turnaround times for new projects.

Globe Print n Pack provides creative solutions to make consumer products stand out at the point of sale. It uses transparent PET, PP and PVC materials and films extensively for promotional packs for instore marketing. Globe Print n Pack’s owner Mr Rahul Gupta believes, “The base of promotional packaging is to draw the consumer’s attention, to enhance the product image and boost the brand. Our promotional packages have to be elegant and colourful to enhance the sales appeal of the merchandise.”
Head of Packaging Design at Globe Print n Pack, Mr Vijay Dhamne says, “ArtiosCAD is helping us in building 3D models which are shared with brand owners. If the concept designs are still in the approval stage, new design iterations based on additional briefs by the client can be executed at a faster pace with Esko software. In ArtiosCAD, a variety of structures and design styles are available that only require dimensional inputs in order to generate cartons in the required sizes. Earlier, before we installed the Esko software, we needed to create and input key lines to process the file for prepress which consumed time. When we used other multi-purpose software the positioning and fixing the number of ups easily consumed more than an hour, but with Esko’s DeskPack and Plato solutions, the operational timing has been brought down to half an hour and with absolute precision and to create print-ready production files.”

Speaking about the company’s in-house design development for its customers Dhamne says, “Most brands use printed PET for their promotions and gift packaging. The product is clearly visible inside and elegant decoration of the outer carton draws attention. When products are presented with see-through diecut windows, glueing is often not needed. Transparent packages are popular among promotional cosmetics producers and distributors.” The company also supplies promotional packaging
solutions to the beverage, gift, household goods segments and a few other markets. In packaging decoration, Globe Print n Pack has developed options that include offset litho printing and hot foil stamping. Rahul Gupta says, “Esko’s software has helped us in developing key line designs and also in filming a short video on how to form a pack by diecutting flat substrates, which is useful both for brand owners and the workers in the converting and finishing department.
Apart from this out of the way help, Esko is well organized in India and its sound technical team can support and assist our designers.” The company’s hands-on owner concludes by adding, “Global Print n Pack is growing annually by around 15% while approximately 16% of our finished goods are exported. We have a plan for future expansion and are looking at processing and printing on an even larger variety of substrates using digital presses.”

JRD Printpack invests in Esko’s packaging workflow Creating a unique package with ArtiosCAD, DeskPack and Studio designer Part of the Manikchand consumer product group, JRD Printpack is one of Pune’s leading commercial printers with diversification not just in flexible packaging but also in the carton segment, which is a relatively new segment for JRD. Today, nearly 10 to 15% of JRD Printpack’s product mix comprises cartons. The company’s main customers are the telecom, electronic and automobile industries, while cartons are primarily supplied to food manufacturers. JRD’s packaging plant is well structured to meet the requirements of global and local brands.
can meet the demands of both cartons and commercial printing. Similarly, DeskPack offers essential prepress functions such as the addition of barcodes, trapping and imposition. Using quality control filters it can inspect and pre-flight files before they imaged on a plate and save costly errors on the press. “Importing CAD data and structural design files, it offers trapped production files that can be repeated and imposed for print-ready production files. It also easily allows the creation and in workflow generation of variable data for taking full advantage of a digital printing press.
To increase the efficiency of its carton printing and converting JRD installed Esko’s packaging workflow software including ArtiosCAD, DeskPack and Studio designer. JRD Printpack’s Managing Director Janhavi Rasiklal Dhariwal and Director Amit Dhariwal, say, “With a vision to accommodate the amendments for clients we went ahead with ArtiosCAD, DeskPack and Studio designer 3D to accelerate the savings, reliability as well as the flexibility in the production workflow.”
Keeping the design perspective in mind, JRD went ahead with the installation of Esko’s Studio designer 3D software. Studio is a fast and easy way to turn ideas into beautiful 3D images and immensely useful for both prepress operators and packaging designers. It allows the creation of stirring 3D visuals from PDF files and is used to check and eliminate costly mistakes before making printing plates, embossing dies or spot varnish blankets.
ArtiosCAD is the popular structural design software for packaging, and Amit believes it
“With Esko’s tools our intention is to convey that we have something unique, which
will help us in providing better services compared to what customers are getting in the market. We also want to aid our customers as a packaging design company as well as a converter. With Esko’s software solutions we have the edge to target brand owners without errors,” Janhavi concludes.

As a modular four-color press, the Omnifire 250 features modern inkjet technology in combination with high-precision robotics and is an economical way of personalizing objects with a diameter from 10 to 300 millimeters with up to four colors as well as opaque white or protective coating, depending on the customer’s requirement. It can be used for smart and efficient color personalization of mass-produced items like footballs and golf balls, drinking bottles, cycling helmets, and other curved surfaces. Users can even personalize objects for customers in real time if necessary, for example in a shop setting or as part of sporting events, trade fairs, or other events, and in this way increase loyalty to the
company. An emotive element is added to the products, giving the user significant added value within the framework of its marketing activities. In industrial applications, the inkjet technology of the Omnifire permits greater automation and flexibility in production lines. Printing directly onto the product reduces costs for materials, handling, and logistics. At the same time, this method provides an economical way of producing smaller batch sizes as well as regional variants and personalized end products. The high-quality, flexible, fast, and on-demand system is therefore also interesting for manufacturers of consumer goods and brand products looking for an individual sales approach.
