The first press conference of the 7th All in Print China was held on May 10th 2017 in Beijing, where the official initiation of the preparation work of All in Print China 2018 was announced. Over a hundred guests were present at the conference, and included representatives from local and international associations, media and leading companies who witnessed the grand inauguration of All in Print China 2018. On October 24-28, 2018, the 7th All in Print China will be held in Shanghai New International Expo Center. There will be 8 thematic pavilions in line with the popular topics, including pavilions for digital pre-press, comprehensive printing, post press converting, packaging equipment, ink & innovative materials, label industry, flexo printing technology and innovation factory. big data, and mobile Internet technology, the digital printing industry is entering a new domain with huge market potential, high added value and has quickly merged with the traditional printing industry. With the rapid development of digital technology, the pre-press process has become more and more digitalized. A digital work-flow featuring computer integration has come into being, CTP technology has been widely used, and the digitalized revolution has penetrated into the traditional printing industry. In the Digital Pre-press Pavilion, visitors will acquaint themselves with the new trend of digital printing, try its new application, explore new opportunities and grasp new digital technology for pre-press.

Comprehensive Printing Pavilion With the successive slide of international market, especially when China, the printing powerhouse, enters the new normal featuring slowed growth and intensified adjustment, the outdated capacity will be forced out of market gradually, and the high-end printing equipment, as well as innovative equipment with digital, smart and green features will be the routine of the industry. Due to rising human cost for printing services, printing enterprises have tried to benefit from the equipment, so it is inevitable that more intelligent, automated equipment

pressideas/ commercial printing

deeper in the production. In this pavilion, visitors will find all kinds of innovative and environmentally friendly printing supplies, such as paper, plates, ink, etc.

Label Industry Pavilion

will be employed in transformation and upgrading of enterprises. Printing equipment manufacturers, through more research and innovative technology materials and improved automation, have seen noticeable progress in technical level. The Comprehensive Printing Pavilion will showcase the latest findings on the offset printer and related technologies and solutions.

Post-press Converting Pavilion The development of science and technology and the fierce competition of the market call for development of printing in a faster, better and cheaper direction. After the pre-press and printing begin digital, intelligent and online operation, post-press converting has become the bottleneck restricting the rapid development of the printing industry. Therefore, the automated and intelligent post-press converting is of great significance for the entire printing industry. Now the digital technology has revolutionized the postpress toward automation and intelligent operation: automatic connection for higher quality and efficiency; the surface finishing and diversified processes (cutting, polishing, stamping, embossing) for higher value. In this pavilion, you will have a close contact with the era of post-press converting 4.0.

Packaging Equipment Pavilion With the development of food, cosmetic and other packaging applications, the global packaging market is growing. The data show that in 2016, the output of global

10

June 2017

packaging industry increased to about $820 billion. Among them, the paper packaging will continue to lead the global packaging market, with the total output value nearly reaching $250 billion, while the rigid plastic package output value was over $200 billion, and that of soft packaging rose to $163 billion. The booming packaging market offers excellent opportunity for packaging equipment suppliers. How can international brands expand in emerging markets and how can Chinese manufacturing enterprises improve the equipment automation, and intelligence and fine operation to reach the international level in terms of technology? This Pavilion will showcase the sophisticated domestic and international packaging equipment. At the same time, there will be an area specifically for corrugated equipment, focusing on technical solutions of advanced corrugated packaging.

Ink & Innovative Materials Pavilion With the increasing awareness of environmental protection, green printing is the inevitable trend of the printing industry. The development and application of environmentally friendly printing materials can effectively promote the development of green printing, and help printing companies to generate more value-added ideas. Green materials have become a consensus in the industry, but the use of green materials is just at a primitive stage of the green application. In the future more attention should be paid to innovating the new green auxiliary materials, thus making the green concept penetrate

Statistics show that, in 2015, China’s total output value of the label printing industry surpassed 35 billion yuan, up 7.8% in contrast to 2014, while the total output of selfadhesive materials surpassed 4.6 billion m2, up 5.6% over the previous year. From a global perspective, the growth rate of label market in the Asia Pacific region is by far over the global average, being the fastest growing market as well. It is expected that by 2019, the global label market value will increase from $32.7 billion in 2014 to $41.6 billion. Asia, the world’s largest label printing market, will account for 41% of the global label market share. The Label Industry Pavilion will be an epitome of Asian label printing industry.

Flexo Technology Pavilion Flexo printing technology has developed for over 30 years in China. Flexographic printing only had an insignificant market share in the past for its poor quality in comparison with that of the offset printing. With progress in equipment and technology, however, the flexo printing quality has greatly improved and gradually entered the rank of high quality printing. Besides, it shows distinctive advantage in efficiency, environmental protection, safety and health, so it is gaining increasingly higher market awareness and acceptance. Today, flexo printing technology has been able to compete with offset printing, gravure printing, embossing and digital printing technology in many areas, and China’s flexo market will usher in a new era of development. Flexo Technology Pavilion will familiarize you with the best practice and application of the flexo printing technology.

Innovation Factory “Innovation Factory” made its debut in the 6th All in Print China in 2016, enchanting visitors with 30 printing and packaging solutions, 24 sharing speeches, frontier application scheme and exquisite booth design in an exhibition area of 1,500m2. June 2017

In Nové Mesto, Slovakia, MK Masterwork produces Diana folder gluers. The factory, with a workforce of 130, is currently being significantly developed once more and aims to double its production capacity.

Last month Heidelberg and MK Masterwork launched the new folder gluer model, the Diana Easy, simultaneously at China Print in Beijing and at a dedicated packaging event in Wiesloch, Germany. On June 1st, more than 40 customers were able to visit the MK Masterwork factory at an open house event held in Nové Mesto, Slovakia and see where and how the new machine is manufactured. The Diana Easy is the latest model to be produced in the Nové Mesto factory which has a history of manufacturing modules as well as entire Diana folder gluers for the Postpress Packaging market segment going back more than 30 years. The site is ideally located to supply customers not only in central Europe but also throughout the world, thanks to Heidelberg’s extensive distribution network. The plant’s capacity was greatly increased by Heidelberg following its acquisition of the site in 2003. Operating under the MK Masterwork banner since 2016 with 130 employees, the factory is currently undergoing further significant development by the Chinese partner to double production capacity to handle the demand for the new Diana Easy, for the existing Diana Smart and Diana X machines as well as new products

planned for introduction over the coming months. MK Masterwork will install a new portal milling machine at the site in the fall and a new ERP system went live at the beginning of the year, both part of an ongoing MK Masterwork program to shorten manufacturing times and increase production capacity.

Germany and built in Nové Mesto, the Diana Easy is a new machine but with a heritage that stretches back almost 60 years through many proven Diana models. The Diana Easy features functions from the top-of-the-range Diana X as well as generous throughput up to 350 m/min. One of the key design criteria for the Diana Easy was to develop a truly modular machine that will allow customers to extend the capacity of the folder gluer as the needs of their business change. Adding features such as the ability to produce 4/6 corner boxes or an inline ejection functionality can be retrofitted to the machine at a later stage. The Diana Easy also comes at a very attractive price for packaging and commercial printers as well as postpress specialists looking to replace older less productive machines or develop new products or markets.

Successful partnership between Heidelberg and MK Masterwork It has only been two and a half years since Heidelberg and MK Masterwork signed a partnership agreement to work together to develop and distribute postpress machines for packaging customers, and yet the results achieved have already been outstanding for both companies. Heidelberg has achieved its

best sales ever in die cutters over the last 12 months and with the introduction of the Diana Easy the company expects this performance to be repeated in the folder gluer area as well. The long-term success of the partnership is founded on the perfect fit between the two companies’ core strengths. MK Masterwork is the largest manufacturer of postpress equipment in the Asian region. As the extensive development of the Nové Mesto site shows, MK Masterwork has invested heavily in the manufacturing and R&D capacity needed to meet the demands of customers in the packaging

market. Heidelberg’s global sales and service network is the largest in the industry and therefore provides a perfect distribution channel for MK Masterwork. Heidelberg also has decades of experience in the development of print and postpress machines. The Nové Mesto site has delivered many hundreds of machines to the global packaging industry over the past thirty years. The ongoing investment by its new owner MK Masterwork means that many more packaging companies will be able to benefit from the highly productive Diana folder gluers it produces over the years to come.

For Heidelberg, the Nové Mesto factory produces impression cylinders.

Bright colours in “green” print products hubergroup offers a wide product range for offset printing certified according to the Cradle to Cradle principle

The environmental label Cradle to Cradle follows the concept to certify products that can feed back into biological or technical cycles when their life cycle has come to an end. With regard to print production, finished print products will either be recycled or introduced into the biological cycle as compostable waste. The printing ink manufacturer hubergroup has developed a wide range of products that has been tested and approved according to the Cradle to Cradle standards. In order to obtain this certification, the independent environmental institute EPEA assessed the ink manufacturing process with regard to its eco-management relating to responsible handling of energy and water resources, and hubergroup’s corporate social responsibility. The assessed and approved printing inks are based on renewable vegetable oils, are formulated cobalt-free and meet the deinkability criteria in line with test method INGEDE 11 along with the specifications of the European Recovered Paper Council (ERPC). The portfolio includes process and special colour inks for conventional offset printing. “Our printing inks, certified according to Cradle to Cradle, enable the printing company to produce ecologically optimized print products”, emphasizes Bernd Groh, Head of Product Management for Commercial Sheetfed Inks Europe at hubergroup Deutschland GmbH. “With this offer, we are enabling our customers to enter new markets, as the demand for print products with a small ecological footprint is increasing.”

Télé Star, the first French magazine to use softproofing in gravure printing Mondadori, Lenglet printers and DALIM SOFTWARE make Télé Star the first French magazine to use softproofing in gravure printing. Initiated by William Lenglet, President of the LENGLET Printing Group, and Dominique Aymard, Director of Industrial Operations at MONDADORI France, Lenglet and Mondadori announce that they have introduced the first softproofing solution involved in the creation of a print magazine in France: the weekly Télé Star. As a result of a three-way partnership with DALIM SOFTWARE, this project, begun at the end of 2016, is now operational. Sylvain Boularand, Prepress Manager at Mondadori France, states: “Mondadori France has been printing Lenglet Imprimeurs’ Télé Star helio notebook since the beginning of January 2017. It previously involved a weekly exchange of proofs by courier from Montrouge (Hauts-de-Seine) to Cambrai (North). We wanted to discontinue paper proofs and use on-line monitor authorizations through the use of softproofing—built around solutions and common applications shared between Lenglet and us. The choice of softproofing meets technical, organizational, economic and environmental challenges for Mondadori.” Jean-Philippe Mas, project manager of Editorial Informatics at Mondadori France, explains: “Regarding the technical aspect, DALIM ES software is a reference application on the market for monitor-based validation. Now that ES is deployed for flatplan management on 46 titles at Mondadori, we are entering a second softproofing phase. With DALIM SOFTWARE it is now a three-way project that triggers this change process. Thanks to precise replication tools, DALIM DIALOGUE Engine, integrated within DALIM ES, brings, simulation of the final printed newspaper not on paper, but on the screen. Along with DALIM ES 5, the arrival of DALIM LATITUDE brings more functionality between DALIM SOFTWARE’s web applications and our operating system and enhances the user experience for softproofing. “With Lenglet printers, we have agreed not only on the software piece, but also on common hardware. We acquired Eizo ColorEdge CG 277 monitors and Just Normlicht proofStation 20 SP booths, which

16

June 2017

can integrate with a calibrated screen. This allows us to compare the printed samples, placed under normalized neutral light, next to their corresponding softproofs on the monitor. In practice, we define a common characterization profile: brightness, black point, white point, RGB. A spectrophotometer connected to the monitor makes it possible to regularly check the accurate reproduction of the characterized parameters and, if necessary, to return to the initial settings. Same screens, same luminous environment, same figures, same control system—this ensures an identical rendering between both Mondadori and Lenglet printers.” François-Xavier Luchart, Lenglet Site Director for rotogravure, confirms: “The collaboration between Lenglet printers and Mondadori France was driven by innovation and progress. We have addressed the matter in an innovative working way, by production information-sharing. Softproofing was immediately considered in a virtual way. At Lenglet printers, softproofing began in 2006, but customers were not ready. When we received this request from Mondadori, we greeted it with enthusiasm! To benefit from the most optimal situation, we chose to apply parallel hardware choices (monitor, light box) and calibration procedures. By doing this, we are guaranteed of total consistency. “ Sylvain Boularand continues: “As far as the organizational aspect is concerned, before we had to print proofs, prepare flats for the courier and wait for them to be sent to the printer. The printer sorted them out and sent them to the gravure press responsible for

printing the Télé Star. Next came questions of storage, archiving and removing content after a certain time limit. This extensive workflow is now replaced by simply validating the pages on screen in a dedicated environment at Lenglet printers, controlled by DALIM ES. ES also adds the benefit of confidentiality of content, in the case of sensitive information, thanks to its extensive access rights settings.” “On the economic side,” explains Mas, “we eliminate courier delivery costs between Mondadori France and Lenglet printers (nearly 200 km), as well as consumables related to paper proofs (support, inks, maintenance, software). Paper proofs have become unnecessary and will be unavailable to the editorial staff. The environmental aspect is undeniable: by eliminating the weekly courier, we inevitably consume less carbon dioxide. Moreover, the creation of screen proofs in the ES ecosystem costs far less energy to produce than the system required to obtain a paper proof.”

pressideas/ newspaper

François-Xavier Luchart, for Lenglet printers, concurs: “DALIM SOFTWARE, an expert in the integration between printer and publisher, was crucial in our collaboration and in maintaining a synchronized workflow. We have very good experience—and have a very good technical and personal relationship— with DALIM SOFTWARE. With our partners Mondadori and DALIM SOFTWARE, we intend, through the implementation of new shared procedures, to proceed even further with our softproofing system.”

in France to develop a standardized and shared procedure for softproofing in a magazine. Additional research and general implementation of procedures would enable other publishers to seize this opportunity. This would make it possible to evolve the current, rather ineffective, ISO 12646 standard relating to ‘displays for carrying out color proofs’. We hope that the combined experience of Mondadori, Lenglet printers and DALIM SOFTWARE contribute to this approach.”

For Mondadori, Sylvain Boularand concludes: “Mondadori is the first publisher

“We are pleased to support Mondadori and Lenglet printers in this innovative approach

for a French press magazine,” says Isabelle Billerey-Rayel, Business Development Director of DALIM SOFTWARE GmbH. “The DALIM ES solution has been Fogra-certified since 2009. It guarantees the high quality standards we set for all our applications. The softproofing of DALIM ES has been deployed for the production of high-quality catalog and art books. With Mondadori, the publishing world in France has reached a new milestone.”

World Press Trends 2017 The audience-focused era arrives “We used to trade in attention. But trust is our new currency,” Mr. Peyrègne said. “Any decline in trust erodes the foundation of our business: credible, first-rate journalism.” The World Press Trends survey includes data from more than 70 countries, accounting for more than 90 per cent of the global industry’s value. The data is provided by dozens of national newspaper and news media associations, with additional information coming from global suppliers: Zenith, IPSOS, PwC and Chartbeat.

The audience-centric era A fundamental shift in the newspaper business model took place two years ago, when reader revenue became the biggest source of revenue for news publishers. The results of WAN-IFRA’s annual survey depict an industry that is increasingly building loyal audiences around its high-quality journalism, as the shift to reader-based revenue continues. In its 2017 World Press Trends study, WAN-IFRA estimates that 56 percent of newspapers’ overall revenue came from circulation sales (print and digital) in 2016. “The shift from advertising to reader-based revenue is reshaping the fundamentals of our industry,” said WAN-IFRA CEO Vincent Peyrègne who presented the key findings from the global study at the 69th World News Media Congress and 24th World Editors

Forum in Durban, South Africa. “We have entered a pivotal moment,” he continued, “and more than ever our focus needs to be on our audience and producing high-quality, engaging journalism.”

Trust is the new currency Interestingly, this trend continues to emerge at a time when survey after survey reveals that people around the world are not only losing their trust in media, but societal institutions in general. “The decline in trust is the biggest risk we face as an industry, and all our efforts must be with the aim of getting it back,” Mr. Peyrègne said.

Global digital circulation revenues grew by 28 percent from 2015 to 2016, and a full 300 per cent from 2012 to 2016, with the trend expected to continue. Despite that, total global newspaper revenues fell 2.1 percent in 2016 from a year earlier, and are down 7.8 percent over the last five years. Advertising revenues continue to decline in most markets, although there are notable exceptions in Asia, Africa and Latin America, and rates of decline vary greatly between different markets.

Start-up Park: Bringing new talents to DCX Digital Content Expo Partnering with Future Media Lab, WAN-IFRA and its Global Alliance for Media Innovation (GAMI), launch a Start-up Park.

Start-up Park is the new exclusive business platform which allows the next generation of tech entrepreneurs and start-ups to meet and engage with the global network of media executives attending the incoming DCX Digital Content Expo (Berlin, 10 to 12 October 2017). The start-up Park will accelerate the dissemination of creative solutions needed to boost the innovation potential of media organisations. The geography and process of innovation are now more open, collaborative and disperse than ever. Innovation efforts in the news media industry are simultaneously more globalised and more localised while the increasing variety of players contributes to enrich the innovation landscape. But the separate efforts, prototypes and roll-outs by hundreds of different tech companies get inconsistent attention and analysis. Vital lessons and examples are not being widely enough or rapidly enough disseminated.

Advancing innovative technologies to the market With its Start-up Park, WAN-IFRA’s DCX Digital Content Expo brings those companies together in a central and accessible place: the exhibition is a unique environment for early stage start-ups to engage with a global network of thousands of media executives from around the world. Its goal is to rapidly advance innovative technologies and talents to the market and lead to better economy of scales for news publishers. The new area is designed to promote new ideas of start-ups

and connect them with potential customers (media executives) and incubators. Young tech companies (less than 3 years on the market) have the opportunity to exhibit their solutions at attractive special conditions. It combines networking opportunities, series of 30-minutes lectures and pitches. WAN-IFRA will celebrate the best of show in a special start-up contest held during the Expo. “The success of media companies is to a large extent driven by the collaboration capabilities of all parties involved. We are proud to contribute to this essential collaboration work that unlocks the innovation potential of tech entrepreneurs with outstanding creative solutions but a lack of market access to commercialise them successfully”, says Vincent Peyregne, CEO of WAN-IFRA and founder of GAMI. “WANIFRA believes that traditional news publishers need to evolve from a culture that is insular, guarded and top-down in its decision making to one that is collaborative, intellectually curious and data and tech driven. The Startup Park is one of the initiatives of our Global Alliance for Media Innovation that helps news media organisations to shift their business in a constructive and collaborative way”, adds Peyregne. “Looking at the wide range of innovations happening today, driven by the smartest and most creative entrepreneurial minds in Europe, we get a feel for the changes Europe’s media sector is going through” says Max von Abendroth, founder of Future Media Lab. “Journalism media faces new challenges in the digital sphere as the audiences move to new channels, it is making its trusted content accessible for a wider range of audiences, and it is exploring new ways of monetizing media content.

Start-ups presented in Berlin in October offer forward-looking solutions. The Future Media Lab. is very happy to facilitate a successful matchmaking in the media innovation space.”

From innovative ad-tech tools to new forms of narrative The Start-up Park will focus on innovations that combine short-term and long-term priorities for news organisations to move into an era dominated by innovative adtech tools, new forms of narrative and engagement with the audience like virtual and augmented reality, artificial intelligence, automated generation of content. Furthermore, entrepreneurs will present the next generation of productivity tools powered by machine learning, predictive analytics, and business models for the monetisation of digital content. PandaSuite, for example, offers a solution to create an app without any coding skills. The start-up provides an online studio for creating all kinds of interactive stories, communication tools, magazines or games. Another start-up represented at the exhibition is Apollo: Based on extensive studies in the field of artificial intelligence, Apollo developed tools that help media companies to automate labour-intensive jobs like PDF segmentation or article clustering. Ownpage uses an algorithm for personalisation: Its software allows news companies to show readers stories based on their reading habits and what other similar users are reading. Additionally, users can build personalized email newsletters. The start-up Park is a joint initiative by WANIFRA’s Global Alliance for Media Innovation (GAMI), and the Future Media Lab that is hosted by EMMA, the European Magazine Association.

WAN-IFRA’s International Color Quality Club includes magazines

For the first time since its launch in 1994, the WAN-IFRA International Color Quality Club is allowing the participation of magazines. The next round of the worldwide quality printing competition, 2018–2020, is open to all newspapers and magazines: • • •

Newspapers that print according to coldset standard (ISO 12647-3) Newspapers using dryers or UV systems Newspapers with exceptional production conditions (tinted or dark paper, flexographic printing, inkjet printing, etc.) Magazines, printed in sheetfed offset, heatset or gravure

Printing higher-value products and periodicals has become a global trend. From Canada to Australia, newspaper printers are bringing the production of magazines into their portfolio. So it was only logical to include magazines in the Color Quality Club as well. Registration is now open for the next session, International Color Quality Club 2018–2020. Early registrants benefit from a free PreCheck in the autumn of this year. Publications from Belgium, Brazil, Colombo, Finland, Germany, Malaysia and Panama are already registered. The biennial WAN-IFRA International Color Quality Club is the only worldwide newspaper and magazine print quality competition. It is based on objective measurement and the judgement of international industry experts. ISO printing standards are the foundation of the evaluation. The next test period will run under the motto “Fly higher by proving your great color printing” through March 2018. Results will be announced in June, and club members will be honoured in October 2018 at the IFRA World Publishing Expo in Berlin.

Heidelberg takes over a Fujifilm operation The sheetfed giant takes over Fujifilm’s coatings and pressroom chemicals operations in the EMEA region

By taking over the coatings and pressroom chemicals operations in the EMEA region of its strategic partner Fujifilm Europe BV, Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) is expanding into the attractive growth segment for consumables. This transaction is another step in pursuing the company’s growth strategy of developing a fully comprehensive cross-sector portfolio that is geared toward specific customer requirements. Fujifilm will continue to focus on supplying total pressroom solutions to plate customers.

“Taking over the coatings and pressroom chemicals operations of Fujifilm in EMEA is helping us become a digital company and enabling us to offer our customers a fully comprehensive portfolio ranging from technology to consumables and service.” - Rainer Hundsdörfer

At the start of the new financial year 2017/18, as previously announced, Heidelberg adapted its structure to its digital future. This move saw the Heidelberg Digital Technology (HDT) and Heidelberg Digital Business & Services (HDB) segments established on April 1, 2017. HDT combines operations in sheetfed offset, label printing, and postpress and is responsible for developing, producing, and marketing the appropriate technologies and products for new business models. HDB, meanwhile, is where Heidelberg will manage its operations in services, consumables, remarketed

equipment, digital printing technology, and solutions throughout the value-added chain. The expansion the company is pursuing in consumables and the design and implementation of new business models are helping to extend this value creation for customers. “We are systematically gearing our portfolio towards profitable growth,” says Rainer Hundsdörfer, CEO of Heidelberg. “Taking over the coatings and pressroom chemicals operations of Fujifilm in EMEA is helping us become a digital company and enabling us to offer our customers a fully comprehensive portfolio ranging from technology to consumables and service.” This transaction further expands the Heidelberg consumables portfolio following the acquisition of UK coating manufacturer Hi-Tech Coatings in 2008 and the buyout of BluePrint in 2014. “We want to become the world’s leading supplier of consumables in our industry in the medium term,” says Hundsdörfer. The acquired operations account for a sales volume of approx. euro 25 million. Heidelberg roughly trebles its previous sales of pressroom chemicals and has

a market share of around 10 percent in Europe. In the coatings sector, Heidelberg is expected to become one of the world’s top five suppliers as a result of this move. The acquisition, among other things, includes the takeover of both production sites in

“Through our portfolio of high-quality consumables, we are making a productivity promise to our customers. By not only distributing these products but increasingly producing them ourselves and offering them in tandem with our equipment and service solutions, we can tailor this performance promise to the specific needs of our customers,” explains Dr. Ulrich Hermann, Head of Heidelberg Digital Business & Services. The takeover complements the Heidelberg

range of environmentally friendly Saphira printing chemicals from subsidiary BluePrint Products NV. It also reinforces business with Saphira coatings for rising customer requirements in digital printing and in the expanding package printing sector. Heidelberg’s customers in EMEA will also benefit from a wider portfolio and specialist application expertise from the company as both a manufacturer and distributor of highquality coatings and pressroom chemicals. Furthermore, they will have access to a wide distribution and service network in the sector. “As a full-service solutions provider, Heidelberg aims to boost productivity throughout the entire print shop. This will be achieved through IT and data expertise combined with the intelligent interlinking of equipment, services, and consumables, all delivered via one platform. It is against this backdrop that we are specifically expanding our expertise,” concludes Hermann.

75 years of passion for folding-gluing In 2017, it will be seventy-five years since BOBST started designing and producing folder-gluer machines for the packaging industry. One of the very first such machines, a PCR382, was set up in 1942 at the Zeiler company near Bern, Switzerland. This same company, which under its current name, LimmatdruckZeiler, is now an extremely successful part of one of Europe’s leading manufacturers of folding boxes — the RLC Packaging Group —is, to this day, still a BOBST client. What began in 1942 is very much a success story. Thanks to their reputation for consistently high box quality and outstanding performance, BOBST folder-gluers have imposed themselves as the benchmark for the folding carton and corrugated packaging industries. And today’s client can purchase complete folding-gluing lines. They combine highly configurable machines with top-ofthe-range peripherals to provide integrated and automated solutions for anything the customer might need.

equipment and processes — many of which are still patented and unique to the sector. For all of those 75 years, BOBST foldergluers have continually evolved through the roll-out of ground-breaking new technologies such as, the blank aligner, the crash-lock module, four-corner box folding systems, the flipper-ejector, as well as GYROBOX for the production of complex boxes in a single run, Braille embossing and zero-fault quality checks, in-line and at full running speed.

increasingly stringent quality requirements across a whole range of packaging markets. We are continually developing the sophisticated materials and technologies that allow us to deliver all this, while maintaining the same reliability and longevity as those very first machines.”It is this ability to respond to client needs through constant innovation that has earned BOBST its dominant position in the folder-gluer market, such as the sector of e-commerce.

Philippe Milliet, Head of Business Unit Sheet-fed, explains, “The success of our folder-gluer equipment over the past seventy-five years is the proof that passion and innovation are part of our DNA. Over the years, customers have demanded equipment that runs faster and faster, is more and more efficient, and can deliver boxes that meet

Today, BOBST folder-gluers are sold worldwide, often locally produced for different markets. Founded in 1890 by Joseph Bobst in Lausanne, Switzerland, BOBST has a presence in more than 50 countries, runs 12 production facilities in 8 countries and employs more than 5 000 people around the world.

BOBST has consistently invested around 6% of its annual turnover into research and development. This has allowed the company to develop innovative new systems,

Faster & Better with Xerox: High quality Versant 80 production at Speed Print The latest Xerox Versant 80 duo at Speed Print is not only to boost sales figures by 25-30 % within a year, but the digital portfolio also fuels their target to be at the top by 2025. Speed Print based out of Kolkata was established in 1978. Today, it is one of the leading providers of digital printing services in Eastern India. Since inception, it has been in the digital printing business and offers a vast range of services like designing and printing of corporate brochures, calendars, greeting cards, visiting cards, certificates, manuals etc. to a wide retail customer base exceeding 600+ customers. Besides, customers in the corporate sector include Spencers, CII, Hiland, ICICI Prudential and Indian Chamber of Commerce, to name a few. Speed Print stepped on its growth path in 1983 with the introduction of the concept name ‘XEROX OFFSET’. This proved a launch pad for Speed Print, after which the company constantly kept upgrading itself into pre-press, press and post press every 2-3 years, keeping pace with the technological

With Xerox Versant 80 presses up and running, Speed Print is specially equipped to tap the VDP growth. The installed capacity now stands at more than 50,000 12x18 prints which allows them to target more market share and give superior quality of prints to their customers.

advancement in the printing industry. The state-of-the-art infrastructure delivers complete turnkey solutions, right from concept development to finished products. Over the years, the company has built credibility, reputation and relationships. An approximately 6000sqft of area spread across 4 units include production, post-press & office administration. “In our facility, we house two Xerox 550 presses and one HP Latex 310 press in addition to the fabrication and binding presses,” says Vinod Dutia. For fabrication, they we have a total of 15 machines. The company also owns an Epson Large Format printer and a Canon B&W Laser Printing press. They have also recently installed two Xerox Versant 80 Presses.

pressideas/ digital

Vinod Dutia, Founder and Managing Partner, is responsible for overall Administration at Speed Print. Urvi Dutia, is responsible for their Business Development. There is a skilled workforce of 15 people constituting of technical consultant, machine operators, office staff and operational and sales teams. “With the installation of the two Xerox Versant 80 presses, we expect a minimum of 25 – 30% growth on our sales within the first year,” asserts Vinod. “All our employees receive software training by Xerox and other OEM engineers. Xerox takes special care to conduct these trainings during any upgrades too,” he adds. In the near future, Speed Print plans to move up to add e-commerce portal by going online. “This (e-commerce), we think, is the future of retail printing. Our vision is to become the largest Digital print production company of the country by 2025,” envisions Vinod.

Strong association – shifting back to Xerox Speaking about their recent Xerox Versant 80 installations, Vinod stresses their strong association with Xerox, “Since inception, we are in the digital printing business and our strong association with Xerox continued for over a decade till 2008. However, we had to shift to another brand because the product line at Xerox didn’t match our business requirement. During this time we invested heavily in other Digital presses but their downtime started increasing by the day and also there was little service support from them. As a result of which, we shifted back to Xerox.”

Versant 80 – the ability to print 350gsm regularly

One such area is to educate their clients on printing on special media and its benefits. “In order to make our vision of becoming the largest digital print production company of the country by 2025 come true, we plan to go online through an e-commerce portal. Additionally, we believe that personalization is the key to success and hence, we plan to develop a set of personalized products to meet the requirements of the market as well as our customers,” continues Vinod. “There is a huge scope for printers who cater to organized sector & corporate companies. The option of Varibale Data Printing has not been explored too much as of now and needs to be marketed properly,” he perceives.

While deciding on their latest Xerox, Speed Print’s primary focus was to increase their production capacity. While considering various brands, they found Xerox had an edge over their nearest competitors in terms of machine service support, reliability as well as pricing. Moreover, Vinod finds the sale and service support from Xerox before, during and post installation as excellent.

Now with Xerox Versant 80 presses up and running, Speed Print is specially equipped to tap this growth. The installed capacity now stands at more than 50,000 12x18 Prints which will allow them to target more market share by giving superior quality of prints to their customers. An enthusiastic Vinod expects his current investment of around 75 lacs to return in three years.

“We believe it was a good decision, as now with the Xerox Versant 80 press, we are able to print 350 gsm on regular basis. The machine, being a 2400 dpi virtual print production press, has a much better & wider colour gamut. It provides a combination of features and functionality which ensure high quality production – faster and better. It also allows printing on more media types and its powerful automation generates less waste,” shares Vinod. With the Xerox Versant, they are targeting the specialty media market along with customized/personalized printing options.

The customers are chiefly from Eastern region. Local delivers are done by dedicated staff and outstation deliveries are carried out through courier services.

Speed Print has the advantage of putting both the presses at a single location which allows them to smoothly switch jobs. One machine is dedicated to print on 90gsm – 170gsm papers along with specialty paper and the other machine only prints on 250, 300 & 350gsm board. “With dedicated gsm range for each machine, we are able to manage print jobs much easier then we used to,” claims Vinod. In the ever changing Digital Printing Industry, Speed Print is all prepared to take on tomorrow. It has a number of key focus areas and strategic steps for the future.

Speed Print has Tally Integrated into their system to help them on various fronts from making estimates to Invoices. They don’t follow any manual process. Vinod thinks that the Digital Printing Industry is currently suffering because of lack of set systems and parameters based on marketing, production and delivery. These are the major industry challenges, according to him. He, however, finds the answer to these challenges in economical CRM & ERP software which could cut down on the administration & production timelines and make operations much faster & reliable. “In future we would like the printing federation to roll out education institutions for the Printing Industry & have customized and certified courses on various aspects of the industry for students who want to pursue the subject and consequently, create more awareness and human resource for the industry. We will soon be launching our own marketing campaigns to educate customers industry wise,” concludes Vinod.

David Rae, Print Champion at MPS (left), has tested the new Prinect Image Control 3 colour measurement system extensively. In his opinion, the opaque white control is the most important feature for optimizing the print quality. He was supported by Bernd Utter, product management Heidelberg, Jason Brooks, Print Manager at MPS and Gary Wilkinson, Heidelberg UK (from right to left).

important and MPS therefore ordered the Prinect Image Control 3 system along with the new machine. “We tested Image Control 3 extensively and were also able to ensure that our requirements were also taken into consideration,” explained Rae. “Most of our jobs are produced with metalized cardboard. Image Control 3 gives us the opportunity to measure and control the opaque white using a completely normal print control strip for the first time. On the basis of our feedback, Heidelberg made this function even more reliable. The colour values required are now much easier to save and call up, and the entire system is more user-friendly.”

each individual customer. “Overall, Image Control 3 has ensured higher quality and more uniformity within our process as we can now measure and control colours on all substrates – especially metalized substrates,” summarizes Rae. “Since the end of last year, our Image Control 3 has been connected to the new Heidelberg central colour database. This means that we have a full backup for all the colours and we can also use conversion software to import colour data in CxF format that is then immediately available for use in the system.” MPS requested this function to allow them to produce one and the same colour consistently at all sites.

This is of even greater value as currently more than 600 colours are saved in the archive at MPS – from colours for cardboard with a metalized coating to uncoated and coated papers. 90 percent of the colours are spot colours and are adapted in line with

Heidelberg has been supplying the third generation of the Prinect Image Control full sheet colour measurement system since the end of last year. It scans with spectrophotometric measuring heads and a resolution of 200 dpi. In addition to true

colour image control, the “Offline Inspection” option means that the entire printed sheet can be checked for printing defects and therefore ensures that the packaging is fault-free. MPS also achieves zero defect production thanks to the Prinect Inspection Control 2 in-line inspection system, which implements maximum productivity and quality assurance into daily production. The two new Image Control 3 and Inspection Control 2 Prinect colour and quality measurement systems were presented at the Interpack trade fair in Düsseldorf and also were on show at the subsequent Packaging Days in Wiesloch-Walldorf. Both events took place under the motto “Smart Print Shop – Zero Defect Packaging”.

Customers benefit from Gallus integration into Heidelberg With virtually complete integration of Gallus sales and service organisations into the Heidelberg Group, the synergies to enable optimum customer canvassing and support. Following the completion of the Gallus Group’s integration into Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) in 2014 and a number of joint technical developments, such as the Gallus Labelfire digital label printing system, the sales and service organisations of the Gallus Group can now also benefit from the synergies from this takeover. The Gallus sales team in Western Europe and Asia has now been fully integrated into the Heidelberg sales structure. This means that the existing Gallus contacts in Western Europe and Asia will remain in place for their customers but will now also be supported by the Heidelberg units in sales. In Asia, the service units have already been integrated under the Heidelberg umbrella, while in Germany this will take place next year.

Key focus of the Gallus at this year’s Labelexpo will be customer service and digitisation along with showcase of the new Gallus Labelfire and Labelmaster.

Gallus now has virtually unlimited access to the Heidelberg Group’s global network. This will enable the Gallus team to continue enhancing its service and support activities in the future by combining the best of two companies – the know-how of Gallus product specialists and the comprehensive support by the Heidelberg Sales and Service Units (SSUs). “Integrating the Gallus sales and service teams into the Heidelberg Sales and Service Units enables us to provide our customers with even more intensive and comprehensive support throughout the world. We’re also able to target additional customer segments that were previously inaccessible to us at Gallus,” explains Christof Naier, Head of Sales, Marketing& Services at Gallus Ferd. Rüesch AG. This integration has also been implemented in the North America and Canada regions since October, with the result that Gallus and Heidelberg now also form one unit in those territories. The existing structure remains in place in Eastern Europe and Latin America, as Heidelberg has already

been successfully representing Gallus in those areas for many years. Gallus will be presenting further innovations for the service area resulting from this integration process at Labelexpo, which is being held in Brussels in September 2017. One key focus of the Gallus stand at this year’s trade fair will be the inroads being made into customer service by digitisation. Another equally important part of the Group’s showcase will be the presentation of the new Gallus Labelfire and Gallus Labelmaster machine systems. The Gallus Group with its production sites in Switzerland and Germany is a global developer, producer and provider of narrow-web, reel-fed presses designed for label manufacturers. The machine portfolio is augmented by a broad range of screen printing plates (Gallus Screeny), globally decentralized service operations, and a broad offering of printing accessories and replacement parts. The comprehensive portfolio also includes consulting services provided by label experts in all relevant printing and process engineering tasks. The Gallus Group is a member of the Heidelberg Group and employs around 430 people, of whom 253 are based in Switzerland. The group headquarters is in St.Gallen, Switzerland.

Braskem presents intelligent colour changing packaging New technology allows packaging to change colour to alert consumer when product is unfit for consumption We may soon be able to stop worrying about the risk of using products in an inappropriate state for consumption. A technology which permits packaging to communicate with the consumer, an “intelligent packaging” by Braskem, the biggest producer of thermoplastic resins in the Americas, in partnership with Clemson University in the US and Brazil’s Rio Grande do Sul Federal University (UFRGS) was presented by Braskem at Interpack 2017. Intelligent packaging uses specific indicators to demonstrate the state of conservation of its contents, emitting an external alert. The packaging will change colour to warn the consumer if the product is unfit for consumption. This technology can be used for perishable product packaging in various sectors. In research conducted with poultry, meat and fish, for example, pH alterations determine a packaging colour change. Patrick Teyssonneyre, Braskem’s global director for Technology and Innovation, maintains that a product’s entire value chain can benefit from this technology. “This gives consumers

32

June 2017

greater quality assurance on the products they take home, and, at the same time, allows companies to control product integrity after manufacture, either during transport or at the point of sale,” he points out. Braskem began researching intelligent packaging in 2013, concluded Proof of Concept trials in 2015, and produced the first prototypes in 2016. It currently has available capacity for further development of studies in this area with interested sectors. “Intelligent packaging needs to be customized for specific segments: this means it may be a few more years before it appears on supermarket shelves,” explains Teyssonneyre.

How does intelligent packaging work? •

Chemical substances able to react to

specific indicators of product damage are added to the thermoplastic resin used in the packaging. When product integrity suffers any type of alteration, the packaging changes colour to alert the consumer.

So, when you think only your nose can tell whether the preserved food in your refrigerator is fit for consumption, now you can just tell it by the colour of the packaging itself. Braskem has actually made it possible by developing a way to make plastic food or beverage containers change from one colour to another when they react to the changing pH levels of their contents, a sign that certain products may be spoiling. Even though this type of technology has existed in some form for decades, the new introduction by Braskem enables customers to benefit from this US$7 billion plasticsand-chemical company which is the largest producer in the Americas of materials that are moulded into bottle caps, jugs, reusable containers, cosmetic packaging and much more. It has production plants in Brazil, the United States, Mexico and Germany.

Cosmo Films expands its range of Direct Thermal Printable Products Cosmo Films, a global provider of films for packaging, labeling and lamination applications now offers an extended range of direct thermal printable (DTP) products. The portfolio now includes standard DTP films, top coated DTP films, high temperatures DTP films and DTP paper. Direct thermal printing is generally used for tagging and labelling applications where elaborate printing is not required and printing is done only for critical information like barcodes. Direct Thermal printing does not require an ink ribbon for printing, and the image/impression formation takes place simply when coated substrate comes in contact with the print head of the thermal printer. The company has just launched a BOPP based top coated direct thermal printable film which is water and solvent resistant and can be used for tough weather labelling such as deep freeze product labelling, industrial bar coding, track & trace and logistics. The film can endure temperatures of -20 to 70 degrees. A high temperature resistance variety with endurance level as high as 130 degrees is also being offered. The

product has been developed keeping meat packaging & carcass tagging applications in mind requiring relatively higher temperature process parameters. The company would now also offer direct thermal printable paper in both top coated and uncoated varieties. Top coated variety would be well suited for applications requiring water resistance.

Commenting on the development, Mr. Kapil Anand, Head - Speciality Labeling Exports, Cosmo Films said, “Direct thermal printing has been gaining significant prominence in recent times due to its ease of use, low total applied cost and optimum image density and we are glad that we can offer both paper and filmic solutions for a wide range of applications now being printed by this printing technology.”

Many players of this sector still think of the Varyflex launched in 2001 among the best innovations ever seen in Labelexpo: it was the first machine with servo gearless flexo technology in the narrow-web printing market. Omet’s innovative solutions ensure perfect printing registration and consistent reduction of waste, which translate to high quality products and costs saving. Apart from the first electronic control, Omet benchmarks also include flexo sleeve concept. Six years later, during Labelexpo 2007, Omet promoted a new “revolution” with the XFlex: it was the first press with short web path, thanks to the integration of the chill drum with the impression cylinder, allowing for the least

start-up waste on a narrow-web flexo press. XFLEX was also the first machine featuring the Vision System able to achieve a perfect printing register, with no manual operations, simply by pressing a button. During the live demonstrations, the visitors looked for the “trick” that allowed to obtain a perfect register of 0,05 mm, independently from the skills of the operator. Welcome plastic-free blister pack! One of the world’s most widely used forms of packaging – the blister pack – can now be made totally in paperboard. Two major benefits are reduced environmental impact and less consumer rage and self-injury. Blister packs are made to hang on a holder in the retail store and often consist of a paperboard backing plus a moulded transparent plastic front section to display the product to the consumer. The Norwegian converter Moltzaus’s ingeniously designed Cefapack improves both the pack’s

environmental performance and openability, and has already won awards. “Our development work had two starting points – environmental impact and ease of opening,” explains Eirik Faukland, the packaging veteran in charge of R&D at Moltzau. To get around the well-known problem of the extreme difficulty of opening plastic blister packs, the basic concept was to replace the plastic with paperboard. What’s unique with the Cefapack solution is that Moltzau chose to replace all the traditional creases with perforations, which gives the desired openability. However, when perforations replace creases, the risk is that they cannot protect the pack’s contents well enough. The choice of which paperboard to use is therefore crucial. to a renewable, non-fossil-based one. “Invercote’s superior tear strength is a prerequisite for a good-quality pack,” Faukland says. “Both the strength and how it performs in the various stages of converting and filling are crucial.” He says another benefit is that in the packs Moltzau has produced so far, the perforations have allowed the customer to increase the speed of the filling lines compared with those using creased packaging blanks. The world-leading manufacturer of ski wax, Swix, is currently packing some of its waxes in Cefapacks and plans to expand the trial. Other products in Cefapacks already on the market are dressings for wounds and non-prescription medicines. In the autumn of 2015 Cefapack was honoured with a Scandinavian packaging award, Scanstar, and in 2017 will receive the WorldStar award from the World Packaging Organisation. As the pack’s designer, Eirik Faukland has also been warmly praised by representatives of the Swedish and Norwegian Rheumatism Associations, which represent rheumatism sufferers. The associations actively encourage the packaging industry to develop more easily opened forms of packaging.

Thanks to new devices for machines connectivity and the evolution towards the Internet of Things and Big Data, OMET printing and converting lines provide all customers with the opportunity to boost their competitive advantage through higher operative efficiency and consequent business growth. Gianni Gerosa, electronic R&D Manager, explains:”OMET is among the pioneers of the Industry 4.0. Taking inspiration from the concept of smart factory even before it became the pillar of the fourth industrial revolution, OMET research and development have been always committed to design and produce interconnected machines, thanks to software able to display and control all production data and working conditions. Providing our customers with this valuable opportunity has been for years a priority for our company as well as the main purpose of several innovations, which led us into the era of industrial automation. More and more operations are now easily managed by remote control, the diagnostic is even more precise and allows quick and focused assistance, production data are always traceable and available and the supply chain is oriented towards the complete digitalization. For example, the use of RFID devices applied to the printing sleeves help the optimization of the whole process through the chance to memorize

is the only possible strategy to a constant growth. Moreover, the investment on “machines 4.0”is now supported by consistent tax breaks in many countries. This is a critical challenge for everyone, not only for big multinationals: many small and middle companies should take this opportunity as the only way to strengthen their business and increase their market share.

This kind of technologies are essential to take the leap into the Industry 4.0, which has become the objective of the global economic and industrial scenario: this huge change is based on connectivity, automation, and the integration between human labour and “intelligent” machines. Mr. Gerosa explains this technologic evolution: “The pursuit of excellence depends more and more on quality and timing of information. OMET R&D has been developing sophisticated systems to integrate into our lines, conscious that our customers need immediate and intuitive information to improve their production, because innovation

Fast forward to a clean, lean career FINAT’s new President’s call to tomorrow’s business leaders At a time when packaging technology as a whole is changing very fast, Chris Ellison, Managing Director of OPM (Labels & Packaging) Group Ltd (UK) has been elected to the challenging position of President of FINAT, the European labelling association based in The Netherlands. “It’s a massive honour, to be elected President”, he says. Replacing outgoing President Thomas Hagmaier, Managing Director, Hagmaier Etiketten (DE), Ellison has over thirty years’ experience at the ‘sharp end’ of the industry, and a strong personal history of business development and innovation to contribute to his new role. He will be supported by newlyelected Vice President Francesc Egea of IPE Innovaciones (ES). At the FINAT General Assembly, Aydin Okay (Canpas, TR) was re-elected to the Board. Newly elected to the Board wereIlkkaYilipoti (Auraprint, FI); GüntherDieroff (Benelli, SE); Alex Knott (Dow, UK), appointed Technical Committee Representative; and Chris Jones (Alphasonics, UK), appointed Young Managers Club Representative. Their entry coincided with the farewell to the Board of Past President Kurt Walker, IsidoreLeiser (Stratus Packaging, B), Marc Büttgenbach (Bizerba, D), Sean Duffy (Bluestar Silicones, F, TC representative) and Dana Kilarska (Purgina Labels, SK, YMC representative).

‘A top agenda item’ FINAT’s activity base has magnified in line with the industry the association serves, and – in an increasingly global marketplace – is

today committed to offering state-of-theart support to its members, who represent the whole supply chain. As Chris Ellison underlines: “Packaging and labelling production is one of the most sustainable industries of all, because it continually replenishes itself – always reflecting changing market needs and fashion trends in a youthful way. That’s why I’m particularly passionate about FINAT’s current focus on recruiting young people into the business. As the founders of the original small, often family-owned, label companies are now beginning to take retirement, we’re facing a real skills shortage that we need to address right now. I know this is a great industry to work in –lively, challenging, and rewarding! – and I’m keen to promote it as the attractive career proposition it is, but I’m also well aware that today we’re competing with many other seductive ‘techno’ options, so it’s a top agenda item for me to have FINAT promote the labels and printed packaging production sector as a clean, lean career choice today.”

New FINAT leading-edge technology website “The advent of new technologies across the whole sector brings its own challenges, impacting the entire make-up of a participant company’s systems. I will be strongly supporting development of the excellent technology website FINAT has recently created, which continually brings members up-to-the-minute expert information on key areas. It’s important to do this, because the pace of technology change in print is getting

faster and faster, and equipment model cycles shorter. Not only that, leading-edge equipment today demands huge investment –yet margins are tighter, customers want extended payment leadtimes, and we need to think about changing direction with what we produce from just a simple ‘label’ to including new offerings like shrink sleeves, inmould labels, and flexible packaging. That’s what brand owners want, and Industry 4.0 for sure means that we all have to become more competitive in our relations with our customers –to be able to keep, and grow, our business.”

Helping us change “And to meet those challenging requirements, we’ve really got to become more competitive and customise our internal business systems to achieve optimal efficiencies. Success means a continuous programme of innovation and new thinking, and the support of an international association like FINAT can make all the difference. You can’t grow your business if you don’t grow your people, and I get a huge amount of satisfaction out of watching staff grow in confidence and professionalism.” “I believe FINAT can really help us change – how we should be thinking, in terms of adding value, technology, recruiting young people. Supporting the label industry national associations, FINAT underlines the international nature of our industry now, which today features a very complex remit – so we have to be as mobile as we possibly can… Fast forward: that’s the main agenda I’ll be addressing during my presidency.” At his own local level, Chris Ellison is committed to establishing a stronger link for FINAT with the UK’s BPIF Labels – “in view of the possible implications of Brexit”, he says. His role as FINAT President will also involve participation in the major international events and features of the label industry calendar – including Labelexpo in Brussels in September and the annual FINAT European Label Forum – and, at an even broader international level, leadership of the L9 – the association of nine national label associations around the world.

Looking forward to Labelexpo Europe FINAT and Tarsus celebrate a 25 year partnership Two iconic brands in the labelling industry – Labelexpo and FINAT – will celebrate the 25th anniversary of a successful partnership at this year’s Labelexpo Europe in Brussels, 25-28 September. The event represents an appropriate opportunity for the partners to focus their vision once again on the broad canvas of the industry to whose growth both have contributed much, and which is uniquely represented by the Labelexpo Europe exhibitors and visitors.

World’s leading showcase Labelexpo Europe has gone from strength to strength since its debut in London in 1980, and this year’s show now occupies no less than nine halls at the Brussels Expo – over 35,000m2 of floor space, accommodating over 700 exhibitors from 40 countries worldwide and also providing the venue for this year’s Global Label Industry Awards presentation dinner. Tarsus’ predecessor (the Labelex/Cowise Group) and FINAT signed their first Labelexpo agreement in 1991, and it is up for its fifth renewal towards the end of this decade. Meanwhile, similar partnerships have been developed with other regional associations around the world, such as TLMI (Labelexpo Americas, Chicago), LMAI (Labelexpo India, New Delhi) and, most recently PEIAC Labels (Labelexpo Asia, Shanghai). The transformation of Labelexpo Europe from a niche self-adhesive labeling event to an established global trade show covering a much broader spectrum of labelling and package printing and converting technology, also reflects the changing shape of the industry, in terms of imaging technologies – particularly digital print – and packaging styles such as flexible pouches, shrink sleeves, and in-mould labelling. Label printers today are certainly positioned at the very heart of the lively packaging industry. However, Labelexpo’s continuing success will depend very much on its ability to respond to market demands, so Labelexpo and FINAT have expanded their joint Labelexpo Advisory Board (LAB) – initially consisting of

42

management representatives from Labelexpo and Board members from FINAT – to include a cross-section of exhibiting suppliers. Their efforts, coupled with the first results of a long-term investment by the event venue, will deliver improvements in logistics, facility management, and visitor convenience for this year’s show.

‘An unmissable event’ As Lisa Milburn, managing director of the Labelexpo Global Series, says: “Our collaboration with the Labelexpo Advisory Board (LAB) undoubtedly makes Labelexpo Europe an unmissable event for label and package printing professionals. Our close working relationship helps shape serious and practical content for the show, and has driven important improvements at the show’s home, Brussels Expo. The LAB is very influential within the wider label community, and we are very appreciative of their ongoing support, invaluable input and expertise.” Ralf Drache, Director of Sales and Marketing at HERMA and FINAT Board Liaison in the Labelexpo Advisory Board, adds: “Inspiring and supporting our industry

is the greatest ambition of Labelexpo Europe. For many years now, the LAB has focused on continuous improvement of this trendsetting trade show. Feedback and the expectations of both visitors and exhibitors, combined with the vision and experience of the Labelexpo Europe organisation, initiate a dynamic process of creating new measures and developing ideas. It’s an excellent example how FINAT represent the interests of its members and the entire label industry.” FINAT Managing Director Jules Lejeune concurs. “Our information and support platform is continuously expanding in this fast-moving technology and business arena. We very much value our partnership with Tarsus and Labelexpo, in the Labelexpo Advisory Board and in all-round collaborative activities. It delivers real added value, and – as it has been for the last 25 years – is a key enabler in keeping our members at the leading edge of the label industry.” FINAT will be welcoming current and potential members of the association at Labelexpo Europe on Stand 11A31.

Dual-shape labels: external and internal die-cutting shape OMET enables production of labels with double die-cutting shape, without backing removal. OMET technology and innovation, in collaboration with the passion and enthusiasm of Grafiche Amadeo, managed to elevate the latest OMET installation on a higher performance level, with the production of special labels with double die-cutting shape, without backing removal. This specific configuration is applied on an 8-colour XFlex X2 370. Grafiche Amadeo entered the label business with the purchase of two OMET narrowweb flexo presses in 3 years. The second XFlex X2 was equipped with innovative technical solutions developed on the specific request of the customer. OMET designed a tailor-made solution for the production of dual-shape labels based on the addition of a die-cutting station in-between the flexo units and on an accurate use of the glues. The machine was especially designed with a particular layout that enables the removal of the internal part of the label, by cutting and removing it before the stripping unit. The die-cutting unit installed in-between the last 2

printing groups cuts the shape meant to be removed, without touching the backing, thus preventing the support from being punched, as it usually happens. Andrea Delfino, Responsible for label sector at Grafiche Amadeo, explains: “After the cutting process, we use a Cold Foil and a flexo unit to apply a layer of UV glue on the shape already die-cut, to facilitate its removal. The label and the filmic substrate are coupled by mean of a nip roll, the UV lamp activates the glue and the removable shape sticks to the plastic film that strips it away. The following steps consist in traditional die-cutting process and matrix rewinding to obtain a special label with both internal and external die-cutting shapes. Mr. Delfino continues: “Thanks to OMET technology implemented on XFlex X2 and to a wise substrate handling, the working speed of this press can reach 130 m/min”. The application of a layer of glue killer under the shape to be removed is a crucial step for the success of the entire job. When the adhesive

material is separated from the backing, this particular substance is spread onto the area corresponding to the removable shape, weakening the strength of the glue in order to facilitate the stripping process. Without this special glue killer, the maximum printing speed would be dramatically slower. OMET had already integrated this special configuration with the die-cutting unit inbetween two printing groups on an XFlex X6, fully automatic and high-performance machine. Yet, Grafiche Amadeo’s X2 is the first machine to implement this very application on a completely mechanical platform.

The dates for Interpack 2020 have been set Following the Düsseldorf trade fair cycle, the next interpack at the Düsseldorf Exhibition Centre will be held in three years’ time, from 7 to 13 May 2020. The last interpack, which took place in May this year and attracted 2,865 exhibitors and 170,500 visitors, met with a highly positive response among the companies that came. Exhibitors praised, above all, the quality of the German and international visitors and their strikingly high willingness to place orders. A number of firms said they had never received so many specific orders during a trade fair before. By the year 2030 Messe Düsseldorf will have invested a total of EUR 636 million from its own funds in the expansion and modernisation of the exhibition centre. One milestone to welcome exhibitors and visitors at interpack 2020 will be the completely redesigned South Entrance and a new Hall 1. The new building will replace the former Halls 1 and 2 in summer 2019, buildings whose basic substance dates back to the

1970s. The new Hall 1 will have a capacity of 12,025 square metres, so that interpack 2020 will have just over 550 additional square metres of hall space compared with the previous facilities. In addition to a new Hall 1, the new complex will have a foyer directly outside, about 2,100 square metres in size, with a 17-metre (56-foot) steeply pointed canopy made from translucent glass fibre fabric with integrated LED lighting. It will have six meeting rooms and direct access to Congress Centre Süd. The suppliers’ trade fair components – special trade fair by interpack will run

completely in parallel with interpack again in 2020 and will be held at a central location within the exhibition centre. This idea met with a highly positive response among this year’s exhibitors, so that expansion options are now being explored for 2020. Any companies wanting to exhibit at either interpack or components in 2020, can register at a much earlier stage this time – at the end of 2017. The official closing date will be sometime in spring 2019, and the precise details will be announced by Messe Düsseldorf in due course.
