Reduce production costs with InkTune and PressTune Agfa Graphics’ new Software enable ultimate control over printing resources and standards, for optimized performance and low TCO. Agfa Graphics has released InkTune and PressTune software. These intelligent tools are part of Agfa Graphics’ ECO³ offering and give print houses complete control over all printing elements, from ink use to compliance with ISO, G7 and clientspecific standards, while reducing production costs. Real-time data insights into print quality drive these capabilities, independent of printing technology and press manufacturer. InkTune and PressTune are crucial elements of Agfa Graphics’ ECO³ program. In designing and creating solutions based on hardware, software and consumables, Agfa Graphics focuses on ecology, economy, and extra convenience (ECO³) to make prepress and printing operations cleaner, more cost-effective and easier to manage and maintain. The ECO³ solutions drive extra value to printing businesses.

InkTune: cost savings plus quality boosts

“We have reduced our make-ready times, we use less paper and ink, and we can adapt printer calibration curves according to paper, print job or customer-specific demands. Agfa Graphics’ solutions have brought us a more convenient way of working.” - Marc Henry

Building on grey component replacement (GCR) technology, InkTune dynamically substitutes CMY inks with black ink. As an intuitive software solution that is fully integrated into the prepress workflow, InkTune uses Agfa unique technology such as Dynamic Ink Limit Control and Dynamic Device Link Generation to maximize ink reduction up to 30%, while maintaining

colour fidelity. The reduction of ink not only has a positive cost savings impact, it also increases overall production efficiency as the drying time is reduced. Furthermore, quality levels increase as rosette structures disappear and colour deviations become less visible. “InkTune eliminates the choice between the reduction of ink, time, and drying powder on the one hand, and high-quality prints on the other hand. Customers can achieve all these benefits through the software’s built-in intelligent adjustment of ink consumption. InkTune allows them to shorten press setup times, as well as to cut costs of all print-related resources,

achieving the lowest total cost of ownership on the market. It is easily set up and requires no additional investment in training or hardware,” asserts Erik Peeters, Global Marketing Manager Software Solutions at Agfa Graphics.

PressTune: a new benchmark in smart print process control As a print production tool, PressTune drives consistency, productivity and the ability to print to exacting standards. As the required print quality standard is reached faster by means of dynamic ink density adjustment and a data-driven scoring mechanism incorporating dry-back compensation, make-ready times get reduced by up to 40% – which in turn leads to less waste. Through intelligent analytics capabilities applied to print and colour data obtained from the press, PressTune also reports in

real time across printing technologies to each stakeholder, for full transparency of the print production process. It enables issue identification and optimized press maintenance scheduling. Even more, the solution’s easy-to-read dashboard makes it simple to generate print quality reports for brand owners in packaging and commercial print and allows for remote quality assurance. “Together, PressTune and InkTune enable significant cost savings by reducing ink use, boosting quality and accelerating your production workflow,” continues Erik Peeters. “In fact, PressTune provides InkTune with the perfect foundation to optimize ink consumption by delivering quality consistence. Both PressTune and InkTune are central to our ECO³ offering, embodying sustainable innovation that focuses on ecology, economy, and extra convenience for the customer.”

Complementary solutions in action Imprimeries et Editions Henry, a print house in Montreuil-sur-Mer with a 120-year history, recently worked alongside consultants from Agfa Graphics to take its print processes to the next level. Already relying on an Avalon system, Azura plates and Agfa Graphics’ Apogee workflow, the firm recently installed both PressTune and InkTune. “PressTune and InkTune have enabled us to obtain a higher consistency throughout our print runs,” says Marc Henry at Imprimeries et Editions Henry. “We have reduced our make-ready times, we use less paper and ink, and we can adapt printer calibration curves according to paper, print job or customer-specific demands. Agfa Graphics’ solutions have brought us a more convenient way of working.”

Heidelberg Prinect User Days 2018 – focus on digital business models and print shop industrialization.

The Prinect User Days 2018 at the Print Media Academy of Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG once again demonstrated their credentials as a communication platform organized by users for users. Around 300 participants from 15 countries use the forum to share information about the latest software trends.

Key Notes : > Software forum organized by users for users offers communication platform as digitization continues apace. > Over 300 participants from 15 countries worldwide. > Subscription models could develop into megatrend.

June 2018

The Prinect User Days at the Print Media Academy of Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) once again demonstrated their credentials as a communication platform organized by users for users. Some 300 Prinect workflow users attended the event over a total of four days, taking the opportunity to discuss the latest software trends in the industry with experts and each other. The presentations and subsequent discussions focused on new digital business models such as subscription contracts and the possibilities of cost-efficient print shop industrialization as digitization continues apace. It became clear that the philosophy of the Smart Print Shop for navigated and even autonomous printing, as showcased by Heidelberg at the last drupa, offers many print shops a solution to the wide-ranging industry challenges they face. That makes “Prinect. Driving the Smart Print Shop.” a highly appropriate slogan for the event, highlighting that the software supports the necessary Smart Print Shop processes.

Subscription solutions for presses and software The “Subscription models for printing machines and software” agenda item met with an enthusiastic response from participants. Models of this kind – under which customers only pay for actual product usage – are already established in many industries and are often the norm. Heidelberg unveiled this new offering for productive industrial performance to the graphic arts industry last year. The company has already sold 17 subscription contracts under which it supplies an all-in package comprising press, consumables, Prinect software, and services and the customer only pays for the number of sheets produced. Related discussions with many interested participants during the event and detailed inquiries made it clear that this solution could develop into an industry megatrend. Prinect Production Manager – a softwareas-a-service model under which customers pay for the volume of data generated rather than individual licenses

– is another popular Heidelberg software solution. Over 150 users have already opted for this model.

Extension of Heidelberg cloud portfolio for innovative software solutions A number of brief demonstrations at the Prinect marketplace – an established part of the event – provided an overview of the key innovations of Prinect 2019. One particular highlight was the presentation of Prinect Smart BI. This cloud-based service enables print shops to use standard Microsoft Office tools to help analyze their business and production data. It makes light work of tasks such as preparing specific reports about market trends, product development, customer requirements, machine performance, and material movements based on the data analyzed, and identifying key factors for more profitable production and sales. Heidelberg is planning to gradually further extend its portfolio of cloud-based solutions. The vision is a cloud-based ecosystem that enables customers to combine modules according to their needs. The software and the IT infrastructure are provided according to the software-as-a-service principle. Some 25,000 Prinect modules are already linked to the Heidelberg cloud. The resulting wealth of data is used to develop software solutions for further boosting productivity. “A print shop’s business success is increasingly determined by how efficiently it handles data. By creating the ideal conditions for this, the Prinect workflow forms the backbone of the Smart Print Shop showcased by Heidelberg at the last drupa,” explains Jürgen Grimm, Head of Software Solutions at Heidelberg.

WAN-IFRA’s announces winners of International Color Quality Club 2018-2020 67 publications by 54 publishers, printers from 20 countries win ICQC membership for two years.

WAN-IFRA announced the winners of the International Color Quality Club 2018–2020 contest (ICQC). 67 publications, newspaper and magazines, produced by 54 publishing and printing companies in 20 countries have achieved membership in the ICQC for two years. Once every two years since 1994 the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers, WAN-IFRA, has offered newspapers worldwide an opportunity to demonstrate their colour printing excellence by organising a print-quality competition. In the 23rd edition WAN-IFRA has opened the competition to the magazines as well because many publishing and printing companies are no longer printing only newspapers but magazines as well.

printing standards. The quality evaluation of is composed of two parts – an evaluation based on objective measurements made on a print test element (WAN-IFRA “Cuboid”) that participants must print every day of a specified week per month for a period of three months; and a visual inspection of the general print quality by a jury of international newspaper experts. Participating companies must meet the defined quality criteria and should print without any common possible quality defects. This competition rewards those companies that not only print within approved international standards but also establish a fool-proof system for print production. “By their successful participation in the competition, the companies have demonstrated that they can supply printing in outstanding quality and offer readers

and advertisers high-quality products,” said Manfred Werfel, WAN-IFRA’s Deputy CEO. “The Color Quality Club is more than a technical printing competition, as it offers participating companies the additional possibility to benchmark their printing quality against recognised international standards and improve it,” he adds. A brochure presenting the successful participants and their publications will be available at this year’s IFRA World Publishing Expo from 9 to 11 October in Berlin, Germany. At IFRA World Publishing Expo the new Club members will receive their certificates and new members of the Star Club of multiple winners will be honoured. Companies from South and East Asia will collect their certificates during WAN-IFRA India annual conference, 25 to 27 September, in Hyderabad, India.

This competition has been organised by the World Printers Forum (WPF), the print community within WAN-IFRA. 121 publications from all over the world participated in this year’s competition. The qualified International Color Quality Club members are: Club membership is offered to all companies who have successfully produced high-quality newspapers consistently over an extended time-period by following international

Jagati of India makes history at ICQC - With its 22 publications winning entry to ICQC, Hyderabad headquartered Jagati Publications is the first in the history of ICQC to achieve this. Indian language newspaper publisher, Jagati Publications has registered all its 22 printing centres. The Hyderabad headquartered publisher bagged membership for all its printing plants in this edition of International Color Quality Club contest. WAN-IFRA’s World Printers Forum has just announced the new members of its International Color Quality Club, ICQC 2018– 2020. In this 13th edition of the color quality print contest, 67 publication titles from 54 publications in 20 countries have gained club membership. This year the number of entries

from Asia, particularly from India, has grown, and showed the enormous efforts made by publishers and printers to print high-quality standardised quality across the printing centre and to become part of the club. Jagati Publications was established in the year 2008, with 22 branches started on the same day of the inauguration. Jagati publishes the daily newspaper titled ‘Sakshi’ in Telugu – a language spoken chiefly in two states (Andhra Pradesh and Telangana) – with an average circulation of 1.1 million copies per day.

Jagati uses Indian made printing presses in all its print centres, equipped with auto registration systems and some of them with

closed-loop inking system. The printing presses are of 2/1 type, with four towers and one folder configuration, and run at average speed of around 40,000 copies per hour. The presses are around 10 years old. Mr. P V K Prasad, Director-Operations said: “The planning and execution team led by T K Suresh, Chief General Manager, and B Gowri Sankar, General Manager, have worked tremendously on 3M concept (Men,

Machine & Material) and worked without compromising on any single element associated with this project.” Prasad also praised that their main objective was to standardise and improve their print quality uniformly and consistently across all the 22 printing centres. This was achieved by developing an internal quality program called “SIQ” (Sakshi Internal Quality) which also helped in contesting and winning the only international quality contest for newspapers and magazines, ICQC 2018–2020. He also added: “It helps us to satisfy all our esteemed advertisers with our world-class print standards from all our print centres across the states (of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh).” This is the first time in the history of the ICQC that a publication has registered all its print centres and won membership to all of them.

This is undoubtedly a milestone for Jagati’s initiatives in standardizing their print process to high quality standards and first of its kind in the world of the newspaper industry. The ICQC contest follows tough regimen that requires participating publications to print good quality and consistently over a three month period. Manfred Werfel, Deputy CEO of WANIFRA, congratulated the management and team of Jagati Publications for their finest achievement. Jagati aims to enter into the WAN-IFRA’s Star Club, the prestigious club for high quality newspaper printers. “High quality printing is always possible, irrespective of the printing infrastructure, with proper planning and standard discipline,” added Manfred Werfel.

New products for Koenig & Bauer presses New-level product finishing; Intelligent copy control in quarterfold; New ribbon lead. On the one hand there are short jobs, a raft of different orders and high quality products, and other the other hand the focus is on high-volume print runs – customer demands placed on commercial printers are becoming ever more versatile and challenging. Koenig & Bauer has been successfully tackling both of these developments for years. Stefan Segger, sales director Digital & Web Solutions: “We are in constant communication with our customers. On the one hand we develop new products with our partners, and on the other hand we are proactively represented on the market with new innovations.” The new UV coater for C16 from Koenig & Bauer offers production speeds of up to 60,000rph, high automation, simple and self-explanatory operation, the stability of a printing unit, automatic cleaning at the push of a button and anilox roller change within a few minutes. Whether for the full-solid finishing of covers or as spot coating for the partial finishing of printed images, the coating unit is already being used very successfully by customers. A compact UV dryer is integrated into the superstructure after the coating unit to enable the widest possible range of paper substrates to be processed. The UV coater processes substrates with a

grammage of between 60g/m² - 250g/m² (38 – 160lbs). Between 2 and 5g/m² of coating is applied depending on the anilox roller.

Intelligent copy control in quarterfold Intelligent, patented copy control in the quarterfold makes for a trouble-free folding sequence. Production conditions are therefore always consistent irrespective of operator skill. Copies are slowed effectively and with a minimum of abrasion, and aligned in the direction of fold during deceleration. The automatic copy control system is self-adjusting and exceptionally reliable regardless of production speed and copy thickness. As a result folding is consistently accurate, even during changes in press speed. Stefan Segger, sales director KBADigital & Web Solutions: “We continue to be very successful in the market and expect investments to be made this year. Our presses are known for their quality. With our know-how we have worked on many new developments for our commercial presses.” The microporous patented turner bars are one of the many proven features that are unique to Koenig & Bauer. They no longer need to be set for different ribbon widths, and operate reliably with a minimal air cushion

and superior ribbon guides. A modular design and dedicated drives throughout allow the superstructure to be customized for specific production scenarios. The short and stable web lead allows a more even web tension.

Rondo AG installs Heidelberg Primefire 106: To further expand Supply on Demand solution Rondo is conducting the world’s first beta test in the area of pharmaceutical packaging with the Primefire 106.

The Primefire 106 is installed right beside the Speedmaster XL 105 in Rondo AG’s production hall. “Both systems complement each other’s respective strengths, which in turn benefits the customer.

Key Notes : > Print quality and colour stability of the digital printing system a decisive argument for the investment. > B1 format fits perfectly into the existing production setup, with digital and offset printing complementing each other. > Automated workflows, close integration of customers into the process and digital printing further shorten packaging delivery times.

24

June 2018

Rondo AG based in Allschwil near Basel (Switzerland), part of the international Körber Group in Hamburg, is conducting the world’s first beta test in the area of pharmaceutical packaging with the Primefire 106. The digital printing system of Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) has been installed at Rondo since April 2018, where it is the final piece in the packaging specialist’s Supply on Demand solution. “The trends in the pharmaceutical industry are heading towards ever declining runs and shorter delivery times in response to personalized medicine, increasing language and country versions and much shorter delivery times for medicines,” confirms Joachim Hoeltz, CEO of Rondo AG. “Our production consists entirely of secondary packaging. Through process automation and close IT integration we offer our customers a just-in-time service and by doing so help them to optimize their own supply chain.”

Rondo AG’s Supply on Demand Service

workflow and optimized the ERP integration with its customer. The goal of – providing small batch sizes in consistently high quality with delivery times of less than a week – has already been achieved through conventional offset printing and optimized job preparation and postpress processes. A Speedmaster XL 105 ten-colour perfecting press with coating unit is currently used for printing.

Rondo has been offering its Supply on Demand Service since the Interpack trade fair in spring of last year. This means that every week for almost a year, it has been supplying a key pharmaceutical customer with a large number of folding carton orders with very short delivery times. Rondo automated its own

direct delivery to the packaging machine. In addition, costs for destroying obsolete packaging are avoided. The close IT integration additionally saves significant costs in the administrative area. In the quality process, Rondo can handle the customer’s incoming goods inspection in compliance with strict GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) regulations, so that this step can be reduced to a minimum at the pharmaceutical companies. All in all, this can save up to 50 percent of the total supply chain costs on the customer side. The much shorter packaging delivery times also enable the pharmaceutical customer to reduce their own delivery times for their medicines often significantly, which in turn leads to considerable benefits on the sales side.

Playing to the strengths of digital printing “We stand for customized developments and for innovations,” explains Hans-Peter Süßlack, Business Process Manager at Rondo. “Offset printing has its limits when it comes to the personalization and run lengths of just one pack. That’s why we took a serious look at digital printing. We tested quite a few systems in the past four years. We saw the Primefire 106 at drupa 2016 and opted for this machine after various tests.”

The Primefire 106 is the first industrial digital printing press for packaging in B1 format and thus is the perfect complement to the Speedmaster in 70 x 100 format. As well as the possibility of producing pharmaceutical packaging from batch sizes of one at the lowest possible cost, the Primefire 106 also makes an impression through its ability to add variable data such as serial numbers while the packaging is being printed. “A decisive factor in addition to the right format is the long-standing, reliable and trusting partnership with Heidelberg,” confirms Jörg Oswald, Director of Operations at Rondo. “A stable customer/supplier relationship with a high degree of trust and a high quality standard is very important in the pharmaceutical industry. The motto is safety, safety, and once again safety.” With this in mind, a development project for the Primefire 106 consists of being able to print custom serial numbers in order to prevent counterfeit medicines under the EU Counterfeiting Directive. This subproject should become reality in 2019. The Primefire 106 is installed right beside the Speedmaster XL 105 in Rondo AG’s production hall. “Both systems complement each other’s respective strengths, which in

turn benefits the customer. The Primefire 106 handles shorter runs and jobs involving variable data, while the Speedmaster XL 105 is perfect for longer runs,” adds Giovanni De Luca, Director Operations for Switzerland at Rondo. “Heidelberg’s extensive colour expertise ensures that end customers cannot see any difference – a must in the pharmaceutical industry.”

Rondo – a strong partner to the pharmaceutical industry Rondo AG develops and produces packaging solutions for the pharmaceutical industry. In addition to standard and special folding cartons, it also offers system solutions and services. Production takes place in Switzerland, the Czech Republic, the USA and Puerto Rico. Worldwide, Rondo’s workforce of around 600 employees produces over two billion folding cartons and package inserts every year. Rondo is part of Medipak Systems, the pharmaceutical systems division of the international technology group Körber. Körber brings together the world’s leading technology companies with more than 140 production, service and sales companies and achieves sales of 2.6 billion euros with around 12,000 employees.

Heidelberg and DOCUFY: Setting a joint course for success Heidelberg paves the way for new digital business models with DOCUFY. DOCUFY GmbH has been a Heidelberg Group Company for roughly one year. On the journey toward becoming a digital, agile company Heidelberg relies on the software and concepts for intelligent handling of information from its new subsidiary DOCUFY. This is because the digital exchange of information between machine engineers and users at every stage of the production process is creating new opportunities for optimization in the age of Industry 4.0. With the service-as-a-service concept, Heidelberg, together with the DOCUFY solutions, is now creating ideal conditions for new digital business models. Heidelberg aims to automate and digitize service processes, whose solutions will also be offered to Heidelberg’s industrial customers. For Maintenance 4.0, Heidelberg is combining existing service solutions with DOCUFY’s services to offer innovative processes and tools, such as electronic maintenance tables, through which Heidelberg and Heidelberg’s industrial customers can achieve significant increases in efficiency and customer value in service. As part of its digital transformation, Heidelberg acquired DOCUFY GmbH in Bamberg one year ago. Heidelberg has used the software solutions developed by DOCUFY (including COSIMA and TopicPilot) and the concept of the Information Space to supplement the portfolio of its Heidelberg Digital Platforms division. In doing so, it has simultaneously created suitable conditions for smart service concepts, which are becoming increasingly important within this context. Together with DOCUFY, Heidelberg has already developed new solutions to optimize its service business by combining and developing the existing products in this way. The implementation of Maintenance 4.0 is one of their first successful collaborations.

COSIMA and TopicPilot by DOCUFY create basis for Maintenance 4.0 In order to successfully implement digitalization strategies, tools are required to translate theory into practice. The joint portfolio already contains suitable tools for implementing Maintenance 4.0

TopicPilot by DOCUFY is an out-of-the-box solution you can use to easily publish all company-wide information on mobile devices, on the intranet, and on the web.

and organizing services. For example, COSIMA, DOCUFY’s component content management system, can be used to track the maintenance steps for various machines and link them to descriptions of the way that maintenance is carried out. In turn, the mobile publication platform TopicPilot by DOCUFY transmits all of this information to the service technician’s smartphone or tablet. What is special about this is that specific maintenance lists can be displayed there for each machine and maintenance interval. The integrated log function allows the user to tick off maintenance steps that have already been carried out, to add images and comments to them, and to save them centrally in the system. Heidelberg’s platform solution View2Connect then even presents maintenance tasks in a 3D model. Heidelberg is already using COSIMA in a charging technology pilot project for electric vehicles, among other things. Linking COSIMA with View2Connect allows the user to simultaneously generate an interactive 3D catalogue of replacement parts and service instructions in 2D or 3D for the first time.

Integration is being felt both inside and outside “Within the shortest period of time, we have successfully integrated DOCUFY into Heidelberg and our growth strategy. Thanks to the committed team at DOCUFY, ‘Heidelberg goes Digital’ works in both directions – internally, we have been able to accelerate the expansion of our digital business models using data-based service concepts. For our industrial customers, we are consistently using our service-as-aservice vision to develop our portfolio into a new service concept,” says Prof. Dr. Ulrich Hermann, Management Board member and Chief Digital Officer at Heidelberg.

Service as a service Industry 4.0 is bringing the issue of process optimization to the fore. With their service-asa-service concept, DOCUFY and Heidelberg Digital Platforms are helping providers and machine and system operators to digitalize and automate their service processes – with suitable processes and tools on one open platform.

A Decade of Success How Konica Minolta’s Simitri technology is reducing negative environmental impact and promoting zero carbon footprint. Change, it is said, starts from within. It is a motto that Konica Minolta Business Solutions, a global provider of advanced imaging and networking technologies, has been living in action through its eco-friendly Simitri technology. By leveraging innovative manufacturing technologies for Simitri, Konica Minolta has cut down on the CO2 emissions during toner production by 76.9%. The company has also reduced its CO2 emissions during toner disposal by 8,400 tonnes over the last decade. Simitri has several other major benefits, as far as its environmental impact goes. Since it is derived from plant-based resources, it emits less CO2 when disposed, promoting carbon neutrality. The polymerised toner also consumes less energy when compared to conventional pulverised toners, both during production and usage. Print jobs using Simitri toners also consume up to 30% less product

when compared to pulverised toners. First launched in 2001 after years of in-depth R&D on emulsion polymerised technology, Simitri is a plant-based polymerised toner for multifunction peripherals (MFPs). Simitri uses plant-based resources for all four toner colours, and also comes in the advanced Simitri HD toner variant to ensure the superlative image quality which Konica Minolta is renowned for. By leveraging Simitri extensively to complement its operations across the board, Konica Minolta today has the highest usage polymerised toner rate in the industry at 99.6%. The innovative toner technology has helped Konica Minolta in drastically reducing its carbon footprint over the years, and ties in with its larger organisational vision of adopting more sustainable, environmentallyconscious operations. With an aim to create

a sustainable society, Konica Minolta is looking to further pursue R&D initiatives to build on the differentiation that Simitri delivers. The Japan-headquartered Konica Minolta Business Solutions is the global developer, manufacturer of multi-functional peripherals (MFPs), printers, equipment for production print systems and graphic arts, equipment for healthcare systems, measuring instruments for industrial and healthcare applications, inkjet printheads and textile printers for industrial use, and related consumables and solution services. CrownConnect’s new industry-first: Can with unique digital identity “Almond” blockchain technology for FACT Water facilitates greater brands transparency and consumer interaction. In a first for the beverage industry, Crown Bevcan Europe & Middle East, a business unit of Crown Holdings is launching its CrownConnect technology in conjunction with FACT – an all-natural sparkling drink. Each can will be marked with a 2D unique scannable code, making FACT beverage cans the first ever to be produced with a unique digital identity. To this end, Crown has partnered with techsavvy entrepreneur Olly Bolton, to launch Almond, a blockchain platform that allows consumers to scan a unique hidden product code and rewards them by unlocking tokens that are redeemable for cash. The platform, to be launched in June of this year, will also unlock details of FACT Water’s story, giving unprecedented access to supply chain information and building deeper, trusting relationships with consumers that will ultimately foster brand loyalty. Crown’s involvement in the project is very much as an enabler of the technology. As well as producing the physical beverage can for FACT Water, on which Almond will be launched, its CrownConnect technology provides the 2D codes beneath the tab of the beverage can that facilitate the engagement

between consumer (via a scanning application) and brand. The platform, developed in partnership with IoT company EVRYTHNG then comes into effect, intuitively generating rewards and offers based on previous purchases and offering discounts and rewards to users based on their habits and the products they buy. “The Internet of Things, and specifically blockchain technologies, will continue to drive the way brands interact with consumers and Almond is a very exciting step into this area for the beverage industry, commented Matt Twiss, Marketing and Business Development Director at Crown. “From a brand’s perspective, the value lies in the ability to capture valuable data about when and where customers consume their products. Producing 100% Natural and Biodegradable PHAs bioplastics Bio-On inaugurates in Italy the first special bioplastics production plant.

New factory will produce various types of special biopolymers, particularly Minerv Bio Cosmetics, the natural and biodegradable bioplastic designed to replace harmful microbeads in today’s cosmetics.

Key Notes : > 20 million Euro investment behind new production hub, the first owned by Bio-on. > Highly sustainable project converted from a former factory; occupies no new land. > Powered by electric energy generated by an advanced trigeneration plant.

34

June 2018

Bio-on, operating in the high quality bioplastic sector and listed on the AIM segment of Borsa Italiana, has inaugurated its first owned plant designed to produce 100% natural and biodegradable special PHAs bioplastics for high added value niche markets such as the microbeads used in the cosmetics sector. New plant, located in Castel San Pietro Terme near Bologna, is also the headquarters of CNS division laboratories (Cosmetic, Nanomedicine & Smart Materials) employing over 20 researchers. New Bio-on plant, currently employing 45 people, expects to double its workforce by the end of the year.

“We are extremely proud,” explains Bio-on Chairman and CEO Marco Astorri, “because this factory demonstrates all-Italian excellence and is the beginning of a new era in the global green chemical industry. From today, thanks to our bioplastic, many companies will have the chance to protect the environment and give ecological credentials to their products, in compliance with ever more stringent limits on the use of conventional plastics.” The new production hub is located in Castel San Pietro Terme just outside Bologna in an area of 30,000 m2; it has 3,700 m2 covered space and 6,000 m2 land for development. Current production capacity is 1000 tons per year, which can be

quickly doubled. The plant, managed by Bio-on Plants, the division responsible for production, future expansion and new plants, is equipped with the very latest technologies and the most advanced research laboratories. Here, over 20 researchers in the CNS division (Cosmetic, Nanomedicine & Smart Materials) can test new carbon sources from agricultural waste to produce new types of biodegradable bioplastic and increase the range of technologies offered by Bio-on. Bio-on also demonstrates its focus on sustainability in its choice of site, opting to convert a former factory without occupying any new land. The overall investment in the production hub and new research laboratories is 20 million Euro. “We are very pleased because since March 2017, when the first stone was laid, we have kept to our schedule and kept the promises we made to the market,” says Marco Astorri. “Our technicians and partners have been incredibly reliable throughout the process.” “Like all complex industrial plants, the new production hub is running a series of tests before becoming fully operational in the autumn. The entire production cycle is run from an innovative control room at the heart of the plant,” explains Riccardo Casoni, Bio-on Plants director, “and this is where the entire industrial process will be tested before production begins 24/7.” The first product to come out of the Castel San Pietro Terme plant will be Minerv Bio Cosmetics, the bioplastic microbeads for cosmetics designed to replace the oil-based plastic particles currently used, which are harmful and non-biodegradable. These microbeads, which are used as thickeners or stabilisers in such widely used products as lipstick, lip gloss, mascara, eye-liner, nail polish, creams, shampoo, foam bath and even toothpaste, pollute the environment because once they are rinsed off after use, they become a permanent part of the natural cycle: plankton in the rivers and seas swallow these plastic particles and thus introduce them into the food chain. The level of pollution is so serious that the USA was the first country to bring in a law (Microbead-Free Waters Act of 2015) banning the use of oilbased polymers in body care products. Some countries, such as Canada, UK, Sweden and France, recently followed suit

while others, such as Ireland, Netherlands, Italy, have announced they will do so*. Using Minerv Bio Cosmetics bioplastic in cosmetics products eliminates these pollutants because the micro particles of bioplastic are naturally biodegradable in water and, therefore, do not enter the food chain. What is more, the biopolymer developed at the Bio-on laboratories actually decomposes into a nutrient for some micro-organisms and plants present in nature. The benefit for the environment is therefore two-fold. The new production hub is also the headquarters of Business Units RAF (Recovery And Fermentation), which develops and optimises bioplastic fermentation and extraction processes to obtain the best possible product yield; and CNS (Cosmetic, Nanomedicine & Smart Materials), which uses cutting-edge scientific equipment to test new types of bioplastic and develop new applications. The areas of operation are Cosmetics, Nanomedicine, Biomedical, Nutraceuticals, Bioremediation, Organic Electronics and Advanced Materials. CNS laboratories are the base for over 20 researchers from various parts of the world and many different scientific disciplines, such as chemistry, physics, biology, pharmacy, materials engineering, biotechnologies, electronics, and mathematics with an average age of 30. All the Minerv PHAs bioplastics (polyhydroxyalkanoates) developed by Bioon are made from renewable plant sources with no competition with food supply chains.

They guarantee the same thermo-mechanical properties as conventional plastics with the advantage of being 100% eco-sustainable and naturally biodegradable. Bio-On S.p.A., an Italian Intellectual Property Company (IPC), operates in the bioplastic sector conducting applied research and development of modern bio-fermentation technologies in the field of eco-sustainable and completely naturally biodegradable materials. In particular, Bio-On develops industrial applications through the creation of product characterisations, components and plastic items. Since February 2015, Bio-On S.p.A. has also been operating in the development of natural and sustainable chemicals for the future. Bio-On has developed an exclusive process for the production of a family of polymers called PHAs (polyhydroxyalkanoates) from agricultural waste (including molasses and sugar cane and sugar beet syrups). The bioplastic produced in this way is able to replace the main families of traditional plastics in terms of performance, thermomechanical properties and versatility. Bio-On PHAs is a bioplastic that can be classified as 100% natural and completely biodegradable: this has been certified by Vincotte and by USDA (United States Department of Agriculture). The Issuer’s strategy envisages the marketing of licenses for PHAs production and related ancillary services, the development of R&D (also through new collaborations with universities, research centres and industrial partners), as well as the realisation of industrial plants designed by Bio-On.

Gallus Innovation Days 2018: Looking into a smart future With the launch of a new digital label entry level press the Swiss fullrange supplier further expands its product portfolio.

The new service offerings from Gallus fit hand in hand with Industry 4.0 and ensure that label printers benefit from higher availability of their machinery. Gallus and Heidelberger Druckmaschinen are working on many specific projects which advance digitization in print shops and deliver added value to customers.

Key Notes : > The Gallus Smartfire prints with the wellproven Memjet print heads with waterbased inks. > Memjet technology allows an inkjet printing press that produces labels with a quality of 1600x1600 dpi. > The name says it all, the Smartfire is absolutely easy to operate via a selfexplanatory touch panel.

36

June 2018

On the first day of the “Gallus Innovation Days”, almost 300 visitors came to the headquarters of Gallus to St. Gallen to see the innovations of the Swiss manufacturer of label printing machines. This year, Gallus, a member of the Heidelberg Group, continues this success story for the third time in an even larger exhibition area. During the “Gallus Innovation Days 2018”, which took place from 26 – 28 June 2018, Gallus print experts presented how digitization would change the label industry and how Gallus is going to support their customers to manage this drastic industrial paradigm shift.

Gallus Smartfire – Getting started in digital printing made easy What would the Gallus Innovation Days be without a machine premiere? With the Gallus Smartfire, Gallus presented a starter model for digital narrow

web label printing. This means, the Swiss full-range supplier expands its product portfolio with another digital printing press deliberately positioned as an entry-level model. “With the Gallus Smartfire, we are also focussing on new target groups who are looking for a smart entry into digital label printing,” explains Michael Ring, Head of Digital Solutions at Gallus. “The Memjet technology allows us to offer an inkjet printing press that produces labels with a quality of 1600x1600 dpi while still keeping the investment costs at a low level.” The Gallus Smartfire prints with the well-proven Memjet print heads with water-based inks, which means that these labels are eco-friendly and leave a minimal ecological footprint. The Smartfire uses an ordinary power outlet, needs no exhaust equipment, is extremely compact, and emits no VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds), thus making it the perfect press for any work environment. “The name says it all, the Smartfire is absolutely easy to operate via a self-explanatory touch panel,” says Michael Ring. With this digital press, only a few prepress skills are required to create professional CMYK 4-color inkjet labels. Just as easy are the replacements of the ink-containers and the exchange

pressideas/ plc

of the print head. Furthermore, this machine also delivers finished die cut labels, all produced in one pass and ready for shipping on the reel, just like Gallus customers know it from the other presses. For this purpose, a finishing unit is attached, on which the labels are laminated and cut. This can be either done individually by the integrated cutting plotter or by fast and cost-effective punching with the semi rotary die cutter at the end of the inline finishing unit. So, one thing is for sure: Proven Memjet print quality matched with profound Gallus label know-how makes the Smartfire the ideal entry-level machine to get started in digital label printing.

Gallus Labelmaster Advanced, the perfect choice Hot on the heels of the successful debut of the Gallus Labelmaster Advanced during Labelexpo 2017 in Brussels, this machine was now presented to the public in St.Gallen with automatic transverse and longitudinal register control, which further emphasises the ease of use of this press. The process change from flexographic printing unit to screen printing unit is easy to handle, too. With just a few simple steps, the two printing units can be exchanged using a sliding carriage and then be reconnected to the machine base. Equipped with one screen printing unit and eight flexographic printing units, the Labelmaster Advanced presented in the Print Media Center at Gallus impresses

with its high final speed and its absolute register accuracy, without any manual readjustment after each job change. The new Gallus Labelmaster Advanced is characterized by a special platform design and can be configured according to individual requirements.

Gallus Labelfire 340 - Digital label printing, now with extended digital and screen inline finishing functions Additional inline finishing functions for the industrial digital label production on the Gallus Labelfire are some of the main topics in the Print Media Center at Gallus Innovation Days. Upstream, this hybrid printing machine is equipped with a fully integrated screen printing unit, which enables a professional opaque white on transparent substrates that can be digitally printed over. Positioned downstream is the new Digital Embellishment Unit (DEU), which is able to carry out inline coating digitally and apply matte, gloss and tactile spot coating effects to the substrate web in various thicknesses as haptic relief effects. What is new is that by using metallic foils, this relief effect can be executed in metallic looks, which was previously not possible on any digital printing machine. In keeping with the principle: “From the file to the finished label in one pass”, the Gallus Labelfire proves that it is the only digital printing press in the world where almost

all inline finishing processes are possible. This means that this press can be used just as reliably and flexibly as any conventional label printing press from the Gallus product portfolio. The Gallus Labelfire was shown at the Gallus Innovation Days with extended inline finishing processes in screen printing and digital finishing.

Heidelberg and Gallus Lifecycle services Digitization at Gallus Services increases machine performance The new service offerings from Gallus fit hand in hand with Industry 4.0 and ensure that label printers benefit from higher availability of their machinery. Gallus and Heidelberger Druckmaschinen are working on many specific projects which advance digitization in print shops and deliver added value to customers. For example, the “mCall” enables automated ticket manufacturing, in which the printing press independently communicates all the necessary machine data to the Gallus helpdesk. This does away with the initial telephone calls and emails otherwise required to log the case, which is precisely how mCall speeds up the service organisation’s response times. Gallus customers also benefit from the almost completed integration of Gallus sales and service organizations into the Heidelberg Group. This means that Gallus will be able to access Heidelberg’s worldwide service network in the future. Gallus customers will now benefit from the dense global network of Heidelberg local service organisations and thus faster on-the-spot services.

Gallus Screeny – Industry 4.0 now also in rotary screen printing The fact that Industry 4.0 also reveals its effects in rotary screen printing will be impressively demonstrated at this year’s Gallus Innovation Days. The data of the

Screeny A-Line screen plate used are read in by a scanner and then used together with the live data of the press. During the printing process, the live data of the screen printing process can then be shown online. In addition, the complete manufacturing process of a Screeny A-Line printing plate will be shown by using the automatic wash-out system from Gallus and the new Phoenix UVLED direct platesetter from Heidelberg. This screen plate is also the plate that will be used for the live demonstrations on the Gallus Labelmaster Advanced in the Print Media Center Label.

Gallus RCS 430 – the benchmark in label printing For over ten years now, the Gallus RCS machine system has been setting the benchmark in terms of print quality, productivity and flexibility in narrow-web label printing. The success of the Gallus RCS 430 is based on its unique combination of a modular design, outstanding process flexibility and a high level of automation. Thanks to maximum, end-to-end automation, the Gallus RCS’ extremely short job changeover times and minimum paper waste deliver optimum operational cost-efficiency.

Since its launch, the Gallus ECS 340 has been the top-selling label printing machine with short web path. Nearly 500 machines worldwide provide daily support to Gallus customers in the label printing sector, helping them to increase productivity and cut costs. The outstanding web feed and the very short web path are decisive in delivering the excellent register performance of the Gallus ECS 340. At the Gallus Innovation Days, Gallus experts explain how multilayer labels can be produced by using a special web shifting unit. This proves that the Gallus ECS 340 has everything it needs to produce a variety of different labels.

United Caps extends French R&D facility Positioned for growth in 2018 and beyond – apart from extension of R&D facilities, acquisitions and innovative portfolio additions increases value of customer offerings. United Caps, international manufacturer of caps and closures, is making significant progress on its growth initiatives. The company has completed an extension of its R&D facility in Messia, France, to meet the demands of business growth and deliver faster time to market for customers. It also recently acquired Spanish closures company Embalatap and has added bioplastics-based GREENER closures and new anti-counterfeiting measures to its portfolio.

The new facility in Dinnington, with an option to expand to 20,000 square meters is expected to begin production at the end of 2019. This project represents an estimated €20 million investment and is expected to increase group turnover by 15% in phase one.

“We are pleased with our progress to date on our stated growth initiatives,” said Benoit Henckes, CEO of United Caps. “The goal is to not only position ourselves for growth, but in doing so, to significantly increase the value we bring to our customers. For example, the extension of our Messia R&D Center alone, with a 30% increase in both staff and floor space, will enable us to develop both standard and bespoke products more quickly. The recent acquisition of Embalatap in Spain adds significant products to our portfolio, especially as it relates to closures for edible oils typically used in the Southern European market. And we – and our customers – are quite excited about the potential for our GREENER bioplastics closures sourced from sugar cane, and our innovative anti-counterfeiting initiatives.” The state-of-the-art United Caps R&D Center located in Messia just got even better with an expansion in floor space from 400 square meters to 600 square meters, with a 30% increase in both staff and floor space; and it now includes a 3D printer for rapid

prototyping, a more modern working environment with increased security, and a restructured organization that enables the R&D staff to be closer to market needs and trends. The R&D Center is designed to facilitate the United Caps strategy of maintaining a mix of 50% bespoke and 50% standard closures. “With our in-house R&D Center, we have a proven track record of benchmark designs for new products, both standard and bespoke. Our R&D team has always been able to come up with innovative solutions for projects that appeared impossible at the outset,” Henckes said. “We can simulate all types of different conditions in our R&D laboratory. When we arrive at the customer for final line trials, we have a fully developed solution that needs only minor modifications, saving significant implementation time and getting them up and running quickly.” About 50% of United Caps’ products are created through customer collaboration with the United Caps design labs to develop bespoke closures tuned to their specific requirements. As an example, Nestlé was seeking a closure for its Nescafé Gold coffee that would support the high-quality image of Nescafé and stand out on the shelf. Nestlé was aiming for a classy brushed metal look for its new packaging. This required a 100% metallic material to be wrapped

pressideas/ plc

around the skirt of a closure, something that had never been done before. United Caps was able to overcome several challenges that were deemed to be impossible, reaching full production in just two years.

New Dinnington Plant is also underway As part of United Caps’ “Close to You” strategy, the company is also planning a new facility in Dinnington close to Sheffield in the UK. The initial facility will be 5,000 square meters, with an option to expand to 20,000 square meters as business growth demands. Production is expected to begin at the end of 2019 and will initially focus on beverage and dairy closures, with options to add additional segments as needed. This project represents an estimated €20 million investment including the first phase of machinery and is expected to increase group turnover by 15% in phase one.

GREENER Solutions with Bioplastics In pursuit of more environmentally sustainable solutions, United Caps has collaborated with Brazilian petrochemical company, Braskem to deliver eco-friendly United Caps GREENER bio-sourced plastic caps and closures made from sugar cane as an addition to the United Caps product portfolio. Green polyethylene begins its life as sugar cane, a renewable resource that quickly replaces itself and is designed to have the same characteristics, quality and properties as conventional PE, sharing the same production route. That, combined with the fact that sugar cane consumes a significant amount of carbon dioxide, gives green polyethylene a negative carbon footprint. Its use reduces greenhouse gases. “We already have added bioplasticsbased products to our portfolio: such as the VICTORIA Closure, a 30/25 screw closure designed for still drinks; and the PROFLAT Seal, ideal for dairy products and still drinks,” Henckes added. “These are being warmly received by our customers, and we expect their availability to drive new customer interest as well.”

prevention has significant economic benefits, including protection of jobs. In addition, it is estimated that there are some 3,000 preventable deaths per year due to counterfeit goods. Counterfeiting can also damage a brand’s reputation, since 45% of consumers will avoid a brand for at least two years after a bad experience, and they share that bad experience on social media as well. United Caps has developed two different anti-counterfeiting solutions as part of its smarter closures initiative. These include: QR+ technology, a combination of a QR code and secure fingerprint that helps brands enhance consumer confidence. This is especially effective when these technologies are printed onto a nonremovable in-mould label. Brands, consumers and others in the distribution chain can quickly and easily validate whether a product is genuine using a mobile app. United Caps has partnered with Verstraete In Mould Labels in the development of this

unique approach to anti-counterfeiting. Verstraete IML, a Multi-Color company, has more than 28 years of experience in offset-printing labels on polypropylene for injection-moulding, blow-moulding and thermoforming. Holographic engraving integrated into a closure, forming an intrinsic and irremovable security feature, providing immediate verification with no need for additional scanners or other equipment. “In addition to all of this,” Henckes concludes, “we are also opening a new manufacturing plant in Asia at the end of this year. 2018 looks like it will be a banner year for United Caps, and it will position us to provide even better customer support and increase the number of new products we can bring to market each year.”

Esko, AVT, X-Rite and Pantone combine - Combine their strengths in colour and inspection solutions to create a ‘Right First Time’ Workflow across the packaging supply chain. Esko has joined forces with Danaher sister companies AVT, X-Rite and Pantone to integrate its automation and collaboration solutions, with the X-Rite and Pantone colour technology and AVT’s camera inspection solutions. These three integrations, that digitize and connect the advanced technologies of Esko, AVT, X-Rite and Pantone, were demonstrated during EskoWorld, the annual Esko user event taking place in San Antonio, Texas (5-7 June, 2018). The integrations are designed to preserve the digital flow of data across connected systems, addressing market demands for faster time to market and ‘Right First Time’ production in smaller lot sizes while taking cost and waste reduction into account.

Automated print inspection device setup increases press uptime by 30 to 60 minutes per press shift Current print inspection setup and processes depend on time-consuming manual intervention by the press operator. This lengthens press setup time and, knowing that a manual inspection setup is error prone, causes additional press downtime and impacts the quality of the work produced. Furthermore, the print inspection devices are just not getting used. A digital link between Esko’s packaging prepress workflow, Automation Engine, AVT press workflow, and inspection systems Helios and Argos now provides data to automatically set up a job for inspection on conventional and digital presses, as well as on rewinders. Geert De Proost, Director Solutions Marketing at Esko says: “Using this integration, we remove a task from the operator’s to-do list and guarantee a ‘Right First Time’ result. The impact is higher accuracy inspection,

42

June 2018

consistent usage and lower rejection rates. In addition, it simply creates 30 to 60 minutes more productive time per press shift.

Optimized in-line colour measurement and automated colour reporting Brand owners are increasingly placing tighter colour requirements on converters and want to receive print quality reports. For converters, in-line colour measurement can be sub-optimal due to inefficient job setups, lack of automated reporting capabilities for their own operations and their brand owner clients, and no ability to integrate off-line measurement into total colour performance.

With the new bi-directional integration between X-Rite ColorCert Suite, which defines colour requirements and collects press run colour data to report on colour performance, and the AVT Spectralab in-line colour measurement device, job data is automatically sent to the spectro, which automatically sets up the job for inline colour measurement. During the run, the colour measurements are sent directly from AVT’s Spectralab to X-Rite’s ColorCert, which collects the data and builds a color scorecard, reporting on the colour quality performance of the print run. “This digital integration delivers better

pressideas/ plc

visibility into colour performance based on measurable, objective results. This solution helps converters to be ‘Right First Time’ and increases colour consistency for brand owners,” states Roie Moran, Product Manager at AVT.

Press operators save 5 minutes job setup time, each time Today’s operators manually and separately enter production specifications into different systems, creating redundancy and room for error. A digital link between Esko’s collaboration platform WebCenter, and X-Rite’s ColorCert Suite automatically populates colour-related specification fields for job creation. When the job runs on the printing press, score values return back to WebCenter to be stored and displayed centrally for true closed-loop colour control and reporting. As Betsy Van Kooten, Product Manager confirms: “With this integration, operators get it ‘Right First Time’. Job creation time can be reduced by up to five minutes per job, while improving traceability

and visibility in the design workflow.”

The integrations shown at EskoWorld will be commercially available by fall 2018. “By integrating the communication and workflow for colour specification and camera inspection, we create great efficiencies in the packaging supply chain. Packaging and colour data only needs to be entered

once to trigger correct communication and clear reporting,” concludes Danielle Sauvé, Director of Customer Insights & Experience for Danaher’s Product Identification platform. “With unique solutions that combine the strengths of our individual operating companies, we continue to pursue our mission to simplify the packaging value chain with digital tools, automation and connectivity.”

Smart Packaging by Tetra Pak Tetra Pak Index 2018 says Smart Packaging offers exciting opportunities in fast growing online grocery. Smart packaging technologies based on unique digital codes will take both online and off-line grocery in exciting new directions during the next few years, says the Tetra Pak Index 2018, launched recently. Online grocery shopping is growing at a double-digit rate, while traditional stores are being reinvented, merging together into an omnichannel where consumers expect to be able to buy whenever, wherever and however they choose, with the smartphone as their compass. Packaging will play an important role in response to the trends that are shaping the growth of on-line grocery, says the company.

Four trends shaping the growth of on-line grocery The Tetra Pak Index 2018 highlights the four key trends shaping the growth of on-line grocery:

Convenience The main driver for on-line consumer take-up, as time-crunched consumers look for new ways to make their life easier. Key opportunities include easy product replenishment, voice, and convenient packaging.

Sustainability Pressure on plastic and awareness of the circular economy will continue to grow, and recycling will become ever more important. Consumers want to know whether brands are ‘doing the right thing.’

Personalisation & uniqueness Customisation of products and personalisation in the consumer journey will be important differentiators going forward. This is accelerating the direct-to-consumer trend and as many as 80% of consumerpackaged goods companies are predicted to migrate to this model by 2025.

Technology & performance Super-fast delivery in as little as 10 minutes is expected by 2025, changing consumer behaviour to buy more frequently and in smaller amounts, adding more complexity to the logistics. Supply chains will continue

to have a real time conversation with the consumer, sharing details on the sourcing of raw materials, nutritional facts, as well as games, promotions and environmental information.

The role of smart packaging Smart packaging technologies based on unique digital codes allow each and every product package to be given a unique identifier. These codes can be read by either data scanning devices or an ordinary smartphone, linking to vast amount of information and opening up all kinds of possibilities. It creates an interactive channel with individual consumers, allowing brands

At the same time, with insights captured through these digital codes, brands can continuously improve the shopping experience and make it ever more personalised for the consumer. e-Retailers are also calling for unique identifiers compatible with the robotic technology used in their warehouse and distribution, as this is widely seen as the key to success in e-commerce. Poppy Signs blooms with Drytac Protac Anti-Scratch Laminate Poppy Signs has been converted to Drytac’s Protac Anti-Scratch laminate, following its installation at the offices of theidol.com, a web-based insurance provider. Dave McDonald, Managing Director of Poppy Signs, explains: “We recently carried out a job on an internal glass partition for theidol. com that was finished with a regular clear laminate. Unfortunately, the surface scuff marks left by the squeegees looked really obvious, unsightly and didn’t fade out as we would normally expect after a few days. We are fully focused on customer service and do

everything we can to ensure our customers have the best possible graphics solution, so clearly this wasn’t good enough.” Poppy Signs decided to trial Drytac’s Protac Anti-Scratch laminate instead. David McDonald continues: “In our tests at the workshop it was hard to make any marks whatsoever - whatever we tried attacking it with!” Following the successful testing of the Drytac film, Poppy Signs returned to the customer to replace the graphics. “We stripped the

glass partition and reapplied the whole graphic, this time finishing it with Drytac Protac Anti-Scratch laminate. The end result was stunning – and didn’t leave the slightest application mark on the material surface. The customer is extremely happy with the new graphics.” Drytac Protac Anti-Scratch PVC laminate is suitable for indoor and outdoor displays in high-traffic areas and for graphics displayed under direct lighting. The high coat-weight and strength of the adhesive makes Protac ideal for laminating over UV inks, as well as solvent, eco-solvent and latex prints. Available in 75µ and 100µ coat weights and a crystal-clear gloss finish or a non-glare matte finish, Drytac’s Protac Anti-Scratch has a non-marking, anti-scratch surface to prevent damage and blemishes, whilst at the same time offering UV protection when used for outdoor applications. Since first using Drytac Protac Anti-Scratch, Poppy Signs is now using it for all graphics applications that require a durable scratchresistant finish. David McDonald concludes: “Poppy Signs is now a convert to Drytac laminates. The laminate is very durable and we have full confidence in its scratchresistance - even for more demanding installations. This product really does do what it says on the tin!”
