Heidelberg expands cloud-based applications Together with Crispy Mountain, HEI.OS to be developed into a cloud platform for the printing industry. As part of its digital transformation, Heidelberg is systematically expanding its digital business models. With the recently acquired software start-up Crispy Mountain (of Mainz, Germany, which offers Keyline, a cloud-based management platform for print businesses), it aims to expand the “HEI.OS” platform as a new industry platform for the printing industry. Among other things, printing companies will be able to obtain a large number of applications from an App Store. By connecting the existing Heidelberg software solutions around Prinect, the Heidelberg ID and the Heidelberg Assistant, it also aims to expand the customer base. The platform is to be open to all manufacturers in the printing industry. This is intended to give print shops easier access to comprehensive services at the lowest possible administrative burden. Third-party suppliers will be able to create tailor-made offers for printing companies via the platform.

“For Heidelberg, the acquisition of Crispy Mountain is a further step in the rapid expansion of cloud based digital applications that are billed on a usage basis,” said Prof. Dr. Ulrich Hermann, Member of the Management Board of Lifecycle Solutions and Chief Digital Officer at Heidelberg. “With Crispy Mountain’s qualified team and innovative solutions, we are accelerating our developments around our new industry platform HEI.OS.”
Keyline has already been launched on the market as a future-oriented management information system (MIS) for the printing industry, designed exclusively for operation in the cloud and for further development towards ecosystems. Using web-based and mobile technologies, the application depicts all stages of the value chain of digital and offset print businesses. This enables printing companies to calculate and produce significantly faster and more reliably, while reducing costs and minimizing errors. The application is now to be expanded with all necessary functions for the three market segments Commercial, Label and Packaging. Heidelberg is already gradually converting the sale of individual software licenses to a usage-oriented subscription offering. The company is thus realigning its traditional software business to cloud technology and its usage-oriented value creation. Jürgen Grimm, Head of Global Software Business at Heidelberg: “This is the first time that Heidelberg has offered its customers all Prinect modules on a subscription basis as Software-as-a-Service since their market launch a year ago and with great success. Crispy Mountain strengthens our team with key competencies in cloud technology and development processes, enabling us not only to deliver an innovative cloud-based and proven MIS application, but also to secure our ambitious business plan on the road to the digital industry platform.”

Increase your workflow efficiency through smart optimization By Patrick Kerr, WW Product Manager, Kodak Software Division, Eastman Kodak Company. As the industry continues to undergo a major transformation, no printer can afford to ignore opportunities to optimize processes and improve efficiency. Ever shorter runs are the norm today, bigger orders are divided into several smaller jobs with differentiated content and time schedules, while web-to-print portals mostly generate a large number of small jobs and personalized products are on the increase. That all adds up to higher-thanever requirements and an even heavier workload for your prepress. More files have to be processed and more plates and / or digital print jobs delivered to the pressroom in less time, to prevent the presses from standing still. The workflow and its potential for optimization are taking center stage. This is where the key lies to improving the overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) of your printing operations. Mass optimization represents an attractive option here that can help you raise the efficiency of your workflow sustainably and hence save time and money.
Mass optimization drives efficiency Mass optimization is a strategy for leveraging the known information of all work-in-progress jobs, so that the jobs can be produced in the most efficient manner using the least amount of resources. Various approaches and possibilities exist for implementing mass optimization. Apart from job batching, where groups of jobs are automatically created based on certain criteria, file and sheet optimization also offer tangible benefits here. Automation and the use of intelligent software guarantee the necessary process speed and precision, so that operator intervention is reduced to a minimum. The first step on the journey is file optimization, which ensures that all files and content supplied by the customer can be reproduced without any problems or errors in all printing processes relevant for the job.

PDF preflight is a typical file optimization software, and printers using a KODAK PRINERGY Workflow System are in the envious position of having the most robust automatic preflight technology as an integral element of their workflow. Preflight software automatically checks the files against selected preflight profiles, which can be either based on industry standards or user defined, and reports any nonconformances or errors. Preflight+, which includes the preflight power of callas pdfToolbox, is integrated in KODAK PRINERGY Workflow. Not only does it identify errors and problems; it also corrects the files automatically where possible. And that’s not all – in conjunction with PRINERGY Workflow’s Rules Based Automation feature it can automatically send notifications to the person whose job it is to optimize the files in the event of a serious problem. In addition to this, for instance, Rules Based Automation can also cause the problematic files to be moved to a specific directory. Incidentally, Kodak-style file optimization covers not just production but also customers. Printers who offer customers the option of collaboration via the KODAK INSITE Prepress Portal, which docks onto PRINERGY Workflow, can use INSITE to automatically provide them with preflight reports generated by PRINERGY’s Preflight+. Any essential improvements that have to be carried out at the customer’s end can thus be completed quickly and in a targeted way at the lowest possible cost.
The fast and reliable way to optimized press sheets Sheet optimization is all about combining several jobs on one sheet, or splitting jobs between several sheets, in such a way that even the tightest deadlines are met while production costs and material usage are minimized. When it comes to utilizing the resources available to your business as efficiently as possible, sheet optimization is paramount. Optimizing processes and costs by ganging jobs that share common production attributes (such as the delivery date, press, substrate, inks, coating, type
of finishing etc.) is a highly complex affair, especially when the jobs concerned have to be produced within a specific time period. Traditional, manual planning methods are not only very time-consuming; they are also error-prone and inflexible. Fortunately, smart, high performance solutions exist for this purpose today, which even a few years ago would have been considered impossible. KODAK PRINERGY Workflow users can choose Dynamic Print Planning – one of the innovative PRINERGY Cloud Services – as a convenient solution for automated production planning and creation of pressready, cost-efficient layouts. Dynamic Print Planning leverages the computing power of PRINERGY Cloud and artificial intelligence to generate the press layouts along with a manufacturing plan that makes optimum use of the available press capacity in minimal time. In case of last-minute changes to the printing conditions, Dynamic Print Planning can supply an updated plan in next to no time. This advanced, high performance sheet optimization solution is closely integrated with PRINERGY Workflow. Job ganging workflows can thus be configured with different levels of automation, including fully automatic processes based on a pool of jobs received either online or via a MIS system or else created in the traditional way.
Don’t wait any longer! The challenges confronting printers daily are incredibly diverse. Yet one thing is clear: if you’re reluctant to shape the transformation now and in the future, you’ll end up among the losers. Mass optimization is a strategy that can help you actively realize those changes in your organization. What’s more, mass optimization is absolutely within reach today. Kodak has suitable, tried-and-tested tools for this purpose in its portfolio as components of a highly automated workflow that is in tune with tomorrow’s world.

Newspapers upgrade prepress workflow solutions to ProImage NewsWayX ProImage helps several newspaper publishers streamline their prepress operations and centralize their production. ProImage an AGFA Company is helping several newspaper publishers streamline their prepress operations and centralizing their production by modernizing and upgrading their workflow management systems. Essential in the streamlining processes is ProImage’s new generation of production workflow system NewsWayX. NewsWayX controls and manages production workflow from a variety of frontend systems through to output. Using a web browser and being fully HTML5 compliant, NewsWayX is able to monitor production status from both origination and print sites – regardless of location. It supports ICC profiles, PDF as well as Bitmap workflow, imposition and page pairing. In addition, it easily integrates with editorial and press control systems thus providing a single, costeffective, integrated end-to-end production solution. As a result, many newspaper publishers take advantage of ProImage’s innovation to upgrade their workflows:

The Board of the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WANIFRA), meeting in Glasgow, Scotland on 3rd June, 2019 on the occasion of the 71st World News Media Congress, 26th World Editors Forum and 3rd Women in News Summit, has called on the government of the United Kingdom to address a number of critical press freedom challenges that threaten UK media and risk undermining recent international efforts to prioritise media freedom. “We deplore the 18th April killing of journalist Lyra McKee,” said the WAN-IFRA Board in one of six Press Freedom Resolutions to be issued from its annual event. “We urge the Police Service of Northern Ireland to vigorously pursue its investigation until her killer is identified and brought to justice.” The Board encouraged Northern Ireland politicians to work through the current political impasse as a means of prioritising the safety of journalists and to “strongly deter the onset of a climate of impunity for those who attack or murder media professionals.” The Board of WAN-IFRA expressed its deep concern at the 2018 arrest and questioning of journalists Trevor Birney and Barry McCaffrey in connection to their work on the acclaimed documentary ‘No Stone Unturned’, an
The WAN-IFRA Board also urged the UK government to make good on its commitment to repeal Section 40 of the Crime and Courts Act 2013. Introduced in the wake of the Leveson Inquiry, the Act would force any publisher not signed up to an approved press regulator to pay the claimant’s litigation costs as well as its own, even when the title’s journalism has been vindicated by the court. “We remain seriously concerned that the threat implied by this legislation encourages a climate of selfcensorship and risks silencing investigative journalism,” said the Board. The WAN-IFRA Board gave its support for an exemption for news media publishers from the new legal controls, codes of conduct and regulatory systems proposed by the Online Harms White Paper, which are intended to curb the influence and reach of technology companies. “The UK government must ensure that any extension of the criminal or civil law in respect to online harms, offensive communications, hate speech and harassment does not limit press freedom.” The Board also called for reform of defamation laws in Northern Ireland and Scotland to bring them into line with the 2013 Defamation Act already applicable in England and Wales. Challenges in Brazil, Mexico, Mozambique, Rwanda, Tanzania, Venezuela and Nicaragua
The Board called on the new leaders and their respective administrations in Brazil and Mexico to take urgent, resolute action to end the cycle of violence that continues to target journalism and make decisive steps in prioritising the safety and security of journalists In Mozambique, the Board condemned a spate of arbitrary arrests and attacks on independent media, notably a systematic campaign by the authorities to muzzle the press by limiting the ability of local and foreign journalists to report on the insurgency in the coastal province of Cabo Delgado. In Rwanda, the Board denounced the government’s stifling of critical voices through a combination of brazen and covert tactics of censorship. In Tanzania, the Board denounced a systematic campaign by the government to attack and intimidate the press as a means of preventing critical and opposition voices, as well as controlling information available to the Tanzanian public. In Venezuela and Nicaragua, the Board called for the authorities to end the cycle of censorship that targets journalism in both countries and commit to guaranteeing the free-flow of information to citizens.
During its meeting in Glasgow, the Board of WAN-IFRA also passed Press Freedom Resolutions calling on global solidarity for media facing extreme challenges in Brazil, Mexico, Mozambique, Rwanda, Tanzania, Venezuela and Nicaragua.

Rodi Rotatiedruk to celebrate its 30th anniversary A long-time Toray partner, the company is the only “green” newspaper printer in The Netherlands. Today, Rodi Rotatiedruk produces 29 weekly and two daily newspapers, as well as printing newspapers for other publishers. In 2003, the company was the first in the world to acquire a Koenig & Bauer Cortina press using Toray waterless offset plates. Rodi is currently using Toray IMPRIMA WA waterless offset plates and a Toray TWP-1250 plate processor, which it was also the first in the world to acquire! As environmental regulations in Europe have gotten stricter, Ranzijn notes the company is ahead of the game with the reduced environmental footprint offered by waterless offset printing, adding, “The only way newspapers can be green is with waterless
offset printing, and we’re the only green newspaper printer in all of the Netherlands. Waterless printing is an alternative printing system that runs on standard offset presses. The key to waterless printing is a plate that uses an ink-resistant silicone coating to eliminate the need for dampening solution. Waterless offset printing also delivers better quality than conventional offset and eliminates the constant adjustments required to maintain ink/water balance on a conventional press.

Advance Local integrates 180 publications using ppi Media workflow - workflow consolidation for 14 printing locations to plan and produce more than 180 US-publications from one central technology stack.
Media group Advance Local, one of the largest media companies in the United States, has made a company-wide switch to a workflow based on the ppi Media solutions PlanPag, OM-ProofStation, and JobEntry. Advance Local was able to move forward considerably with its workflow consolidation by implementing a central solution for their 14 printing locations to plan and produce more than 180 US-publications from one central technology stack. Advance Local has been using the planning solution PlanPag and the output management system OM by ppi Media since 2003 in their Michigan print site in Walker, producing papers including the daily paper The Grand Rapids Press. The seamless integration of the Digital Assembly Line’s various software components and the ease with which the resulting hands-off workflow for the entire production process is handled were among the reasons why the company decided to implement PlanPag, OM, and OM Job Entry for the entire enterprise. The
consolidated centralized solution has made the complete US wide management of page and plate production easier. The system has gone live for all 14 company-owned and 3rd party printing sites. While the papers are planned with PlanPag, JobEntry is used to plan and integrate advertising material and external printing orders into the production process. The Output Management System OM combines the information from both planning modules to manage a FNFO (First Needed First Out) hands-off workflow for all 14 print sites. All software components for Advance Local were installed using Amazon Web Services to create a central data management hub for all print sites. “Our successful and ongoing cooperation with ppi Media since 2003 laid the perfect groundwork for the decision to further expand this collaboration. Since all of ppi’s software components work together using concepts of the Industry 4.0 Initiative, our entire workflow now offers incredibly quick response time when it comes to last minute changes or adjustments. In addition, the
fact that all data is managed centrally offers complete synchronization of all production components involved. Thanks to the ppi Media workflow we were able to increase production efficiency. For us, the ppi Media system compares to none when it comes to being a true end-to-end workflow,” says Matt Fleming, Enterprise Director of Creative Production and Prepress at Advance Local. ppi Media, founded in 1984, is a workflow specialist for automated newspaper production. 80% of all daily newspapers on the German market are produced using products developed by ppi Media. Media companies in Europe, Asia, Africa and the US use the company’s solutions in their daily work for the planning, production and editorial workflows of digital and print pressinfo products.
Publishing House Nürnberger Presse commits to AdSelf by ppi Media AdSelf, a modern self-service-portal, allows advertisers to book ads in daily publications simply and comfortably. Starting now, the publishing house Nürnberger Presse is among those using the solution from Northern Germany in order to improve internal efficiency while increasing revenue. Hereby, the company becomes part of the AdSelf success story, first introduced in 2018. AdSelf, an HTML5-based white-label-solution, was developed for optimal application on mobile devices as well as desktop computers. Easy to handle models and an effectively designed interface guarantee a high-quality user experience – every time. Open interfaces with commercial ad order entry systems, user management, and payment solutions ensure quick integration into the existing environment. If desired by the provider, private as well as commercial
customers using the portal to implement their clients’ orders can use AdSelf. With the introduction of this modern and responsive portal, the Northern Bavarian company is looking to improve the user experience of their advertising clients. At the same time the integrated alfa Stylo editor for editing ads, is meant to completely replace the existing internal editors. Nürnberger Presse is taking on the set up and implementation of the AdSelf themselves, thus making sure that the company can react quickly and independently in making system adjustments for new market conditions in the future. In addition, the new portal allows the publishing house the technology upgrade to Windows 10. “We expect the new selfservice-portal to offer us significantly more efficient processing for small ads. Another important change for us is the improvement
of the user experience for our readers as well as ad clients,” says Torsten Wiethe, Head of Commercial Systems and Processes Advertising Marketing. The progressive implementation of AdSelf at Nürnberger Presse is planned for the summer of 2019. The publishing house already introduced Content-X by Digital Collections and ppi Media for the creation of special topics and magazines in 2018.

Online Photo industry sees major reshuffle: Apollo acquires Shutterfly and Snapfish platforms Acquires Shutterfly in an all-cash transaction valued at $2.7 billion; separately enter into a definitive agreement to acquire Snapfish. In a major Photo Industry overhaul, global alternative investment manager Apollo has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire all of the outstanding shares of Shutterfly, one of the leading retailer and manufacturing platforms of printed photographic products. The acquisition for $51.00 per share in cash, or enterprise value of approximately $2.7 billion, the company announced. Simultaneously, Apollo announced that the Apollo Funds entered into a definitive agreement to combine Snapfish, the internetbased retailer of photography products, with Shutterfly. Upon the closing of the Snapfish transaction, the Snapfish owners will become significant minority owners in the combined Shutterfly and Snapfish business. The Shutterfly Board of Directors unanimously approved the agreement with the Apollo Funds and recommends that Shutterfly stockholders vote in favour of the transaction. Upon completion of the Shutterfly transaction, Shutterfly will become a privately held company, and its shares will no longer be listed on the NASDAQ Global Select Market. “We are extremely excited for our funds to acquire Shutterfly,” said David Sambur, Senior Partner at Apollo. “At a time when billions of photos are taken every day, Shutterfly has led the charge as a pioneer of personalized photo products and school photography, helping consumers capture, preserve and share life’s most important moments. We look forward to working with Shutterfly’s talented employees and supporting further investments in technology to drive the continued growth and success of the business.”
Funds. The Apollo Funds bring substantial financial resources as we continue to invest in innovation, as well as valuable strategic perspectives to drive growth over the coming years. We are committed to supporting the company and continuing our relationship as a fulfillment partner.” “We are thrilled to partner with two pioneers of the photo personalization industry in these innovative transactions,” said David Sambur, Senior Partner at Apollo. “We are confident that this transaction will create an opportunity for innovation and continued growth in the photo and personalized photo products industry. We are excited to work with Neil and the Snapfish team in this transaction, and to benefit from their market expertise after three generations in the photo product business. We believe that both companies will be better positioned to operate in a competitive marketplace through their enhanced ability to invest in product innovation to deliver the best consumer experience.” The online Photo industry was waiting for something big like this for years with quite a few online vendors shutting down, being absorbed by other players and retailers scaling down in-store photo operations. David Haueter, in his article points out, “The latest announcement is possibly the most dramatic yet, as longtime competitors Shutterfly and Snapfish have both been acquired and will be combined into one company. This is kind of like Ford merging
with Chevy, which ironically has also been predicted by some automotive analysts.” Market reports show that Shutterfly has gained popularity over various categories like prints, photo books, cards, and wall décor, while Snapfish’s popularity has fell over the last few years. In InfoTrends 2018 US Photo Merchandise Survey, only 3% of consumers said they placed their last photo card order with Snapfish, which put them 11th on the list. Shutterfly was second with 18%. In photo books, Snapfish was 9th with 4%, while Shutterfly was first with nearly 34%. David Haueter opines, “Short term, we may see Shutterfly positioned more as a premium provider of photo products and prints, with Snapfish positioned as a lowercost alternative for more budget-minded consumers.” “Long term, we wouldn’t be surprised to see Shutterfly and Snapfish merge completely, with one company name (Shutterfly) and one website. It should be an interesting ride,” he adds.
The Shutterfly transaction is expected to close by early fourth quarter 2019. The Snapfish transaction is expected to close simultaneously with the Shutterfly acquisition. Neil Cohen, Chairman of Snapfish and CEO of District Photo, Inc., commented, “We look forward to working with the Apollo

Europe’s 1st Landa S10 sets off commercial production at Edelmann Edelmann’s Heidenheim facility holds open house showcasing the 1st Landa S10 Nanographic Printing Press producing commercial jobs live. 60 leading converters and printers from around the world attended an open house at Edelmann’s Heidenheim facility, to see Europe’s first Landa S10 Nanographic Printing Press producing commercial jobs at 6,500 B1/41 in. sheets per hour. Visitors heard how the Landa S10 perfectly complements Edelmann’s offset technology, and how its brand customers now request its new Nanographic Printing capability because of the freedom it offers – to order what they want, when they want it – all with high and consistent print quality. “In the print and packaging world, everyone is clamoring to know if our Landa S10 is
running as expected. We repeatedly get asked if print quality is good and if we’re running seven colors. They also ask if we’re achieving 6,500 B1/41 in. sheets per hour and if we’re able to produce commercial jobs,” comments Oliver Bruns, CEO, Edelmann Group. “The simple answer to all of that is, yes of course. The Landa S10 is built to be a full production machine, 24/7. The colours are brilliant and vibrant - so intense and lively. I haven’t seen any other technology that comes close.” “Before installing the Landa S10, we were limited in the solutions we could offer our customers. B1/41 in. digital printing with seven colours and at 6,500 sheets per hour has eliminated these previous constraints. The S10 installation has been a great success, and we now expect to be out of beta in a matter of weeks,” confirmed Bruns. Specializing in packaging solutions for health care, beauty care and consumer brands, the Edelmann Group has operations in nine countries, spanning Europe, Asia, North and South America. Employing more than 3,000 people and with sales of over 300 million
euros, Edelmann produces over 5.6 billion packages and leaflets per year. In meeting the environmental demands of some of the world’s most exacting blue-chip brands, sustainability initiatives are also a top priority for the company. Speaking at the open house, Oliver Bruns also confirmed that partnering with Landa was the best decision for their business. “This is not just a supplier-customer relationship, it’s far more. I love the color from our S10, but crucially, the Landa technology allows us to get a good ROI and that’s just as essential. High speed and great efficiency enable us to earn money with the press.” said Bruns. Yishai Amir, CEO, Landa Digital Printing, comments: “We are obviously thrilled with the success of the Landa S10 at Edelmann, and we are looking forward to moving them out of beta within weeks. This success echoes our own business progress, on all fronts. With a continued ramp-up of production and goto-market operations, we will have presses installed and printing across three continents by the end of 2019.”

Additive Manufacturing at the interface to printing and paper technology With a view to the trade fair’s target group, the focus will be on applications in printing and paper machine construction as well as applications for media and packaging. The spectrum will range from additivemanufactured machine components to prototyping
or on-demand spare parts supply for printing presses to the use of additive processes to manufacture individual advertising products and unusual packaging solutions. “Since our trade fair appearance at drupa 2016 met with a very positive response, it made sense to expand our commitment at drupa 2020 and contribute our know-how,” explains Dr. Markus Heering, Managing Director of the VDMA Additive Manufacturing Association and also the VDMA Printing and Paper Technology Association. In the five years of its existence, the working group has grown to around 150 members. These include leading suppliers of AM production technology for

Thanks to its broad membership spectrum, which includes traditional drupe exhibitors, users from many other industries and leading international researchers, the working group is able to offer the highest thematic diversity under its own steam. Gebhardt is also inviting drupa exhibitors to address the working group with their own lecture topics. “We are open to suggestions and will find opportunities in the ten-day program to provide a forum for AM applications from the traditional print and packaging industry,” he emphasizes. A broad mix of topics is important to him so that the journey to Düsseldorf is worthwhile both for experts and for all those who are just beginning to get an idea of the potential of 3D printing in the printing and media industry.

For this reason, both introductory lectures on technical processes within additive process chains and insights into current and future applications in the printing, packaging and media industries are planned. “Additive design and manufacturing create scope for creativity in many industries. From this point of view, the technology also fits in perfectly with the drupa,” stresses Gebhardt.
About 150 companies and research institutes collaborate under the roof of the VDMA in the Additive Manufacturing Association. System manufacturers, suppliers of components and materials, industrial users from the metals and plastics sectors, services providers for software, manufacturing, and finishing as well as researchers all have a common goal: the industrialization of additive manufacturing technologies.

The first Heidelberg Primefire in Japan Kyoshin Paper and Package chooses Heidelberg Primefire 106.
Kyoshin Paper and Package decided to choose Heidelberg Primefire 106 as their next digital press to expand their web-to-pack business on top of the traditional packaging business by signing a contract of the first Primefire 106 in Japan in April 2019. Heidelberg will install the digital printing system in Kyoshin Paper and Package´s brand-new Kanto plant in summer this year. Kyoshin Paper and Package was founded in Kobe, Japan in summer of 1948. Since then, their “challenging spirit” is their beating heat of the company as a successful packaging service provider and currently 290 employees are working with the company.
“The print quality such as green and orange were outstanding and we felt that the quality of print by Primefire 106 was the most beautiful we have ever seen.” - Kazuhiro Kajikawa, upon testing the Primefire 106 with their challenging images.
In 2013 the company expanded their packaging business launching web-to-pack service called “Hacoplay” focusing on the demand of small size and small quantity with digital presses. They receive an order even from one box in three days as their shortest delivery time. Currently the maximum size they can print on their digital press is B2 as maximum, but in order to further expand their web-topack business, they were looking for B1 digital press that could meet their demanding customer needs. The first time they saw Heidelberg’s Primefire 106 was at drupa 2016 and they were impressed enough to ask Heidelberg to do print test with their challenging images. According to Mr. Kazuhiro Kajikawa,
executive managing director of Hacoplay division, “The result of the print test was excellent. The print quality such as green and orange were outstanding and we felt that the quality of print by Primefire 106 was the most beautiful we have ever seen. The consistency of quality between first and 500th sheets was also amazingly stable that surprised even our offset press operator who was with me for the test. Other interesting feature of Primefire 106 for us is to be able to cover 95 % of Pantone colour because we as packaging printer have to use a lot of special colours for package printing. By enlarging the size from A3 to B2, we were able to expand our business and we are expecting more by going for B1 size with Primefire 106.” The Primefire 106 is the first available industrial digital printing press for packaging in B1 format. “Japan is for us a very important market as it is among the top countries for folding carton production and it has probably the highest standards of image quality in the world,” explains Montserrat Peidró-Insa, Head of Digital Print Business at Heidelberg. “The success of Primefire customers is what drives our entire team. We are proud to have such a renowned company like Kyoshin Paper and Package selecting Primefire 106 to accelerate their company growth. With this new installation, Primefire is expanding its global presence even further and consolidating itself as a business growth enabler in packaging.”

The IoD inking system replaces conventional inking reservoirs with a single rubber pipe that dispenses 30 grams of ink to the print unit. The system eliminates ink trays and chambered doctor blades and performs fully automated washing of the print unit in less than one minute.
Technology Inside”, which is the best combination of digital and DigiFlexo printing, and will be unveiled for the first time at Labelexpo. The hybrid is associated with total flexibility in high added value labels, with extremely short job setup and fast return on investment. It will be the most digitally automated press in the labels market, with the highest print quality and productivity. It opens a new era in the production of selfadhesive labels with totally new standards of productivity and profitability. Other machines on display include: M5 IoD/ DigiColor, LB702-WB digital label printer from Mouvent (using only 100% water-based VOC-free Mouvent Inks) and M1X inline UV flexo press. Meanwhile, the BOBST M6 press will be the star attraction at Bobst booth. M6 press is a combination of in-line UV Flexo, REVO Digital Flexo and the new revolutionary V-Flower print unit, allowing for job changeovers in one minute, “on-the-fly” without stopping the press, and with up to 95% press up-time. It is an extremely productive press for producing short to mid-size runs economically. The M6 will feature the DigiMount fully automated flexo plate mounting system, which features advanced electronics for improved speed and accuracy of plate mounting.
Visitors to Labelexpo can hear all about BOBST Services. The Helpline Plus service allows customers to connect with BOBST experts immediately as the need arises, meaning that around 80% of all technical issues are resolved remotely within two hours. Helpline Plus AR (Augmented Reality) and the Smart Headset take it to the next level, allowing customers to wear a special digital headset and the BOBST technician to virtually look through the eyes of the customer’s machine operators and provide them with precise instructions on what must be done. “This really is the complete package,” said Jean-Pascal Bobst, CEO of BOBST. “The new solutions on display at Labelexpo set completely new standards to help converters and brand owners improve time-to-market, guarantee colour consistency and food packaging safety. At BOBST, we never stop innovating, and this year’s event will be a very clear reflection of that philosophy. We look forward to seeing everyone in Brussels!” Visitors can see live demos and talk with experts at Booth 3A59+58 in Hall 3, and see the BOBST M6 press in action in the Flexible Packaging Arena, Booth 11A50 in Hall 11.
To complement the IoD system, HAL is an off-line ink mixing station for producing Pantone colours from 14 basic inks, and contains only one pump performing a pipette-style action to measure out the very small amounts of colour needed. DigiColor is the first ever inline “closed loop” colour system that enables digital colour adjustment to the target Delta E values during printing, at any speed, on any substrate, with any operator. It is a major step towards full colour digitization. These innovations have paved the way for a new hybrid Flexo with “Mouvent Digital

KHS in India: One of the Group’s most sustainable production sites A Green Factory Building in the making – the company sets an example with its extensive sustainability programme. The protection of the environment may not be the first thing people think of in general. However, for KHS India it’s an altogether different case. The company has become a prime example in the past few years by instigating an extensive sustainability program. India’s share of renewable energies in the energy mix is to amount to at least 40% in 2030. By 2026 the government wants to shut down all of its coal power stations – a goal that seems realistic as solar energy is now the least expensive source of electricity.
Switch to ‘green’ energy
“By making our machines gentler on resources, by saving on energy and materials and through our system of waste management we’re creating added value for our customers.” - Ajay Shah, VP - Operations & KHS India’s Sustainability Officer
KHS Machinery is an Engineering company that was founded in 1997 in Ahmedabad, the fifthlargest city in the country. The KHS subsidiary is headed by Managing Director Yatindra Sharma, who commenting on its sustainability commitment, says, “Up until now coal country India was one of the most cost-intensive countries in the world regarding energy costs. It’s thus worth companies switching over to less expensive green energy and cutting their electricity consumption for economic reasons alone.” “Our success regarding the issue of sustainability has given us a competitive edge both regionally and globally and boosted our market image,” says Sharma. “Through our commitment as a company we’re making a contribution to both our society and our country. And we’re also profiting from this. Sustainable products and processes help us to gain
new customers and employees and make it easier to adhere to legal provisions.” In this context KHS India is in close contact with its group parent in Germany. Expertise is exchanged and knowledge is passed on from one enterprise to another and benefits are being drawn from the best practices.
International standards As far back as in 2011 KHS India had its energy management system certified according to ISO 50001. In 2015 the company gained certification according to the international environmental management standard ISO 14001. This places an emphasis on instigating a continuous improvement process regarding the environmental performance of a company. “By making our machines gentler on resources, by saving on energy and materials and through our system of waste management we’re creating added value for our customers,” claims Ajay Shah, vicepresident of Operations and KHS India’s sustainability officer. “And we’re not resting on our laurels; instead, we understand energy management to be a process which we can continuously optimize.” Specific measures introduced to this end over the past few years include the installation of presence sensors in conference rooms which automatically switch off all devices which require power when there’s no one in the room. LED bulbs are now used in office, street
Key Notes : > KHS in India follows an extensive sustainability program, which sets a right example for other industry players. > Profits from boosted market image, gaining new customers and employees. > Sensitizing and motivating personnel to save energy is also part of the process.

and factory lighting and old air conditioning units have been replaced by energy-saving models.
Motivated employees Sensitizing and motivating personnel to save energy is also part of the process. This is done with the help of specific means of communication, training courses, the certification of team members and by honouring kaizen ideas which result in an increase in efficiency. The practical yields of these and many other activities are recorded and reviewed with the help of an online smart energy monitoring system. Despite all this attention being paid to the ecological aspects of sustainability, KHS India has not lost sight of the various economic and social aspects of the issue. “Our efforts in lean management and industrial engineering are making our processes more streamlined and more robust and helping us to eliminate activities which don’t contribute to the creation of value,” confirms Shah. “We’re helped in this by our global, in-house production system KHSps which covers all aspects of operations management from process optimization through product quality, cost reduction and occupational health and safety to customer satisfaction.” The effort is worth it: for years the KHS subsidiary has constantly won awards and prizes of renown from a number of state and private economic institutions. In 2018, for example, KHS Machinery won the Times Network Strategy Award in recognition of its formative role in its branch of industry and was awarded gold by the Quality Circle Forum of India (QCFI) for its 5S method of workplace organization. The social aspect of sustainability also plays a major role at KHS: the company has implemented lots of measures for their employees. The company has set up a Young Engineers Club for university graduates, for instance. Here, the technical, non-technical and social skills of the next generation of engineers are developed and applied in projects and group work. Middle management has its own KHS Champions Club where executives can exchange views and experience. Numerous sports and cultural activities and a bus shuttle for commuter colleagues round off the range of
services offered. The reward for these and many other ways of committing employees to KHS in India is a very low personnel fluctuation rate of under 5%. This high degree of loyalty is also expressed in the choice of place of residence: 80% of the KHS workforce lives within five kilometres of the factory.
Personnel loyalty The encouragement of young talent ranks very high at KHS India: in the region the company is famous for giving talented applicants from socially deprived families the chance to learn, contribute and grow. KHS Machinery uses diverse tools to win personnel loyalty, such as fast-track promotions, awards for individuals and teams and shows of recognition in open forums and at yearly events. Employees receive annual feedback from their superiors who take this opportunity to also determine a person’s individual training and development requirements. Technical training courses are run by the KHS Academy, which is also available to customers, and at the KHS sites worldwide. In the area of occupational health and safety, besides its own health and safety officer, KHS also has an interdisciplinary safety committee with 33 members. “In all of our business processes and practices we’re constantly avoiding or minimizing risks to the health and safety of our employees,” Shah emphasizes. The company’s low accident and injury rate proves this. KHS India not only looks after its employees but also their environment, as demonstrated by a good number of campaigns dedicated to corporate social responsibility. These include a commitment to the education, hygiene and health of underprivileged children, such as providing support for science lessons and setting up medical camps in rural schools. The company’s charitable actions of course also include providing help in an emergency, such as to the victims of flood and other natural disasters.
has earned the reputation of being one of the most sustainable production sites within the KHS Group. “Our customers can rely on their products being safe, reliable and of very good quality. It’s this which has ultimately made KHS India a profitable organization. This is a huge motivation for us to continue to strive for operative excellence,” says Yatindra. He already has the next objective in sight: “By 2026 we want to be certified as a Green Factory Building by the Indian Green Building Council.” Until then, however, there are a number of challenges to be met – from the collection and use of rainwater to the application of renewable energies on site, to name but two. And we are sure that his organization will overcome these hurdles as smoothly as ever. KHS in India manufacturers filling and packaging systems for the beverage industry with customers in more than 25 countries in Africa, Eastern Europe, Asia and Australia. With a capacity of about 150 machines per year, it has an installed base of over 1,500 systems. Besides Ahmedabad, with an assembly area of 18,000 m2, it has other offices in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Hyderabad. Over 400 employees work for KHS.
Ambitious plans Yatindra Sharma is especially proud of the many successes reaped by his company’s activities, numerous certificates and the sense of responsibility shown by his employees. Because of this, the Indian plant

Asahi Photoproducts to unveil CleanPrint at Labelexpo Europe 2019
Asahi Photoproducts, exhibiting (Stand 5a34) at Labelexpo Europe (24 to 27 September, Brussels), will be displaying its full array of flexographic plates. Featured at the show will be Asahi’s CleanPrint™, a benchmark clean flexographic printing technology which. “Since Asahi first brought to market its innovative flexographic plate technology, which enabled complete release of ink onto the substrate for a cleaner image and fewer press stops for plate cleaning, our thoughts about the value of the technology have evolved,” said Dr. Dieter Niederstadt, Asahi’s Technical Marketing Manager. “Not only do we continue to improve our plate quality and performance, but we have also learned from our customers that the value of the technology goes way beyond the quality and productivity benefits it enables. Not only does it eliminate the need for volatile solvents in the platemaking process, speed up the process to consume less energy and deliver the same high quality and press productivity (OEE) our customers have come to expect, but the technology reduces makeready times and waste as well as the amount of time

the press needs to run. All of these benefits add up to a much cleaner platemaking and flexographic printing process than can be achieved with any other plates on the market.” At Labelexpo, Asahi will be featuring its popular AWP-DEW water-washable plates, the first to use CleanPrint technology. “Our plan is to migrate this technology to other plates in our portfolio over time,” Niederstadt adds, “to ensure our customers can print CLEAN on the widest array of substrates in the market.”
Benefits of Asahi CleanPrint Asahi CleanPrint is designed to facilitate kiss touch printing pressure. Lighter printing pressure ensures constant repeatability of printing quality during the production run as well as longer plate life. This characteristic is achieved with unique Asahi-engineered photopolymer chemistry that reduces the surface energy of the printing plate and enables better ink transfer to the substrate during printing. CleanPrint has the beneficial effect of reducing ink filling-in the mid-tone area during the printing run, leading to fewer
cleaning intervals and less press downtime for a highly sustainable flexographic printing process. Niederstadt notes, “Our customers are ecstatic about the quality of print they can deliver while also achieving as much as 50% less makeready time and 30% or more improvement in OEE.”

SPPRING project workshop Print and paper specialists develop solutions to skills and recruitment challenges. 70 delegates gathered in Graz, Austria, on 6 June for a workshop tackling the pressing skills and recruitment challenges in the paper value chain. In three breakout sessions, representatives of printing companies, schools and universities, trade associations and recruitment specialists shared their experiences and contributed ideas to the forthcoming skills and recruitment strategy for the sector. Intergraf and CEPI, the Confederation of European Paper Industries, brought together key stakeholders in the print and paper industries to exchange views on current and future training and recruitment needs. The workshop in Graz was part of the SPPRING project (Skills for the Paper and Printing Industries’ Next Generations), which will develop a skills and recruitment strategy for the printing industry. Georg Konetzky, Head of Department for National Market Strategies at the Austrian Ministry for Digital and Economic Affairs, opened the day by setting out some of the challenges which many industries in Europe face, such as an ageing population, the development of artificial intelligence, and a mismatch between the supply and demand of skills. He then gave an overview of how officials in Austria are trying to meet these challenges, such as through better targeted apprenticeship schemes. European Commission representative Constanze Veeh then gave a presentation on how the changing reality of trade, climate change, and global power balances are
impacting European job markets. She highlighted the specific challenge of needing to prepare young people for jobs that may not yet exist. Constanze Veeh quoted American writer and businessman Alvin Toffler “The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn”. Intergraf organised three sessions throughout the day for the 40 delegates representing the print industry: firstly on current skills and education, training and recruitment needs in the print sector; secondly on future skills, education, training and recruitment needs; and thirdly on ‘Making it happen’, with delegates setting out their priority action steps to address the problems identified. Each breakout session for the print industry began with an opening presentation from a print specialist, and Mike Hopkins, Hilltop Consulting (UK), and Fiona Narburgh, 3F Consulting (UK), moderated the discussions. In parallel, the paper delegates also had targeted discussions. A number of issues were highlighted by the print delegates. It was raised that the industry suffers from a negative image of being perceived as old-fashioned; that there are not enough engineers applying for advertised jobs; and that training methods are not keeping up to date with the demands of modern students. Nevertheless, there was no shortage of ideas to address these problems, and the day concluded with delegates commenting on the positive, inspirational mood and renewed motivation to solve current and future problems. Intergraf Secretary General Beatrice Klose said that: “Following the crucial discussions at this workshop, SPPRING will continue to examine the current and future skills and

recruitment challenges our sector faces in order to develop best practice guidance for printers. This will ensure that employers in the print sector can find skilled workers – for the benefit and longevity of our sector”. Bernard de Galembert, CEPI’s Innovation and Bioeconomy Director said: “Those working in our industries are the best ambassadors. We want to promote the reality that our industries are modern, green, and high tech. Today has proven that there is a wealth of initiatives already in existence by which to do this”. Speakers • Georg Konetzky, Head of Department for National Market Strategies, Ministry for Digital and Economic Affairs, Austria • Constanze Veeh, European Commission, Directorate-General for Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs Print Industry Specialists: • Luc Bouters, International Circle of Educational Institutes for Graphic Arts, Technology and Management, Artevelde Hogeschool, Belgium • Marcel Lemain, GOC advice and training centre, Netherlands • Mike Hopkins, Hilltop Consulting, UK Paper Industry Specialists: • Wolfgang Bauer, IPZ-Institute Graz, University of Technology, Austria • Gerald Kreuzer, PRO.GE (Industriall), Austria • Wolfgang Bliem, ibw Austria - Research & Development in VET, Austria.

Green Trend: From personal care to home care The green trend in the personal care industry is permeating to the home care & cleaning products industry.
Ecovia Intelligence sees a number of important initiatives introduced by home care brands and ingredient firms this year. Most developments are occurring in green packaging. Growing consumer awareness of plastic pollution is leading personal care and home care brands to experiment with new packaging materials. In June 2017, P&G was the first to use ‘beach plastic’ in its Head & Shoulders shampoo packaging; the recycled beach plastic was then utilised in its Fairy liquid bottles. Henkel, Unilever, Ecover and SC Johnson have all since started using beach plastic in product packaging. A number of personal care and home care brands have partnered with TerraCycle to launch the Loop platform. The circular shopping platform aims to make single-use packaging a thing of the past. Personal care and home care products, as well as food products, are delivered to consumer households and the waste packaging collected so it can be re-used. Loop has been launched in the US and France this year, and will be introduced in the UK and Canada. As will be shown at the Sustainable Cleaning Products Summit, green ingredients are gaining currency in detergents and home care products. The personal care industry is already using an array of natural and sustainable materials in product formulations. Detergent and home care companies are looking at renewable feedstock to make green surfactants. Sustainable palm oil and coconut oil have been used for many years, however new sources are emerging. Croda recently launched its ECO range of biobased surfactants. The surfactants are made from biomass and certified according to the USDA BioPreferred program.
standards like Ecocert and NPA are highly established, as are environmentally-friendly schemes like Green Seal and Nordic Swan. A new development is that new labels are being introduced to represent products not containing contentious ingredients. In 2018, the Environmental Working Group extended its EWG Certified label to home care products. The Made Safe label has also recently been extended to home care products. • Large consumer good companies are responding by developing greener lines. Last month, SC Johnson expanded its line of concentrated cleaning products. P&G has been a pioneer with its laundry detergents for cold water washes. Unilever has gone further by launching a dedicated brand of green home care products. The Love, Home and Planet was introduced a few months ago; the range of laundry, dish and surface cleaning products are made using plant-based ingredients and packaged in recycled plastic. Ecovia Intelligence believes the green trend will continue to permeate the home care industry, influencing raw materials, formulations, packaging, as well as marketing of finished products. The question is whether brands should ‘green’ existing home care product lines, or start again and develop dedicated sustainable brands. An update on green trends in the personal care and home care industries will be given at the following events… • Sustainable Cleaning Products Summit North America (11-12 July, New York)
•
Sustainable Cosmetics Summit Europe (4-6 November, Paris) Sustainable Cleaning Products Summit Europe (6-7 November, Paris)
The Sustainable Cleaning Products Summit aims to advance sustainability in the cleaning products industry by debating key issues in a high-level forum. The North American edition of this international series will be hosted at the Park Central New York on 11-12th July 2019. The next European edition will take place in Paris on 6-7th November 2019. The Sustainable Cosmetics Summit has been covering sustainability issues in the cosmetic & personal care industry. The international series of summits now takes place in the major geographic regions of the world. The 11th European edition will take place in Paris on 4-6th November 2019. Ecovia Intelligence (formerly known as Organic Monitor) is a specialist research, consulting & training company that focuses on global ethical product industries.
The number of ethical labelling schemes for home care products is also rising. Natural

It’s a Match! - how Artificial Intelligence and 3D Printing can work together. Artificial Intelligence and 3D printing are technologies that are still developing and getting more important every day. Our article demonstrates how these two can work together.
considerably reduce time and material waste. Also, AI could be used after the printing process to detect problems directly, and to improve the quality control of the 3D printed models.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) isn’t rocket science anymore, it’s already part of our daily life and as the technology is still growing, it’ll definitely be a bigger part of our future.
AI Build, a company based in London, already developed an automated AI-based 3D printing technology, with a smart extruder, allowing to detect problems: Their “AiMaker” is a high precision robotic end-effector that attaches to industrial robotic arms and is able to 3D print large objects at high speed with great accuracy. Combining advanced AI algorithms with real-time manufacturing data from its sensors and cameras, it detects any problems and makes autonomous decisions on the fly for achieving the best possible print quality.
The same development can be witnessed with 3D printing which is becoming more important every day and it’s still growing fast. Just think of, for example, constructing medical implants made of biomaterial with an ability to self-heal and regenerate, or building bridges with a new synthetic material fabricated with a unique blend of protein molecules similar to the ones used to produce spider web silk. That’s where AI could help. Wouldn’t it be really great if you could bring both technologies together?
Precision and Reproducibility
Defect Detection
AI could also be a solution for one of the biggest challenges in additive manufacturing: The need for greater precision and reproducibility in 3D-printed parts.
For instance, when it comes to defect detection, AI could be included in 3D modelling programs via CAD software. Using AI in 3D printing could further optimize the printing process and help avoiding errors: The joint force of these technology could develop tools that are able to find defects that could make the model non-printable in a 3D model. A real-time control by the AI could
Supported by the National Science Foundation, a team from the College of Science in Purdue developed a new model-building algorithm and computer application for geometric accuracy control that could potentially improve part printing. This technology quickly corrects computeraided design models and produces parts
with improved geometric accuracy. It ensures that the printed parts conform more closely to the design and remain within necessary tolerances. This method also leads to improved consistency, assuring that the part will perform the same way even if it’s printed on a different machine. It’s also able to create complex designs that would not be possible with traditional manufacturing processes.
Designs and New Materials On top of the designs, AI is playing a key role in the process of inventing new materials with superior functions. This new development in engineering is enabling scientists and engineers to design a new class of materials that are stronger, lighter, more flexible, and less expensive to manufacture and thereby addresses the key challenges the industry has to tackle. Machine learning, and predictive modelling, a powerful subset of AI, are being used to accelerate the discovery of these new materials. Designers simply enter the desired properties into a program and algorithms predict which chemical building blocks can be combined at a micro level to create a structure with the desired functions and properties.
A Perfect Match? AI as a Part of 3D Modelling Programs 3D printing is a complex process, and AI could improve it considerably and make it even more efficient. The combination of Artificial Intelligence and 3D printing could lead to new applications of the additive manufacturing technology and more. As you can see, the future of AI in advanced materials, design, and engineering seems quite promising. Experts agree it will serve as a cornerstone to future innovation in almost every industry. We’re pretty sure that AI and 3D printing have a great future together and are curious about what’s coming next. We might see it at drupa 2020!

Customer service 4.0 - reliability and value for the customer. The world of customer service has taken a major breakthrough. The era of long waits and expensive trips is definitely giving way to rapid, specific and remote interventions, made possible by new technologies based on “virtual” presence and the Internet of Things. OMET has been following this path long since: diagnostics, increasingly precise, and production chain, now on the way of complete digitalization, are opening the door to an interactive, real-time customer service, with big time and money savings for customers. The cornerstone of the OMET “Customer First” service is remote diagnostics. Appropriate software allows OMET technicians to remotely monitor any OMET line, wherever is it installed in the world, through a secure Internet connection. They can investigate any customer needs, interactively acting with local staff using chat, video or images. OMET customer service can remotely check real time parameters, trends and alerts, and perform remote tests, checkups as well as technical interventions. “A new remote connection system has been activated since 2012 and installed by default on every OMET machine since 2016 - explains Antonio Muraca, OMET Technical Assistance & Spare Parts Department -. On demand, it can be installed on previous lines. The software scans the machine, checking how devices and actuators are responding and producing diagrams and graphs that show the engines performances, allowing to identify immediately the cause of any alert. Trouble-shooting at a software level can be solved directly online, and mechanical interventions can be managed by on-site staff, virtually driven by OMET’s specialists that knows the machine in detail. If spare parts are needed, the involved parts can be excluded from processes to allow continuing the production”. OMET customer service goes beyond on-call interventions. Data detected by the software allow the customer service keeping track of stops or malfunctions. The analysis of these trends over time make it possible to verify critical issues and take actions to solve

Print Matters for the Future 2019: Print Enters a New Era A record 76 international delegates from 26 countries joined the latest instalment of Intergraf’s annual Print Matters for the Future conference in London. agencies already understand that “Print has an impact because it stays around for longer […] – it has a lot of longevity”. She highlighted the effectiveness of print in marketing campaigns and its particular importance for creatives, who must be able to deliver their desired message in a singlepage print ad, or it does not work. Every year in late spring, Intergraf organises the ‘Print Matters for the Future’ conference, exploring and presenting the most pertinent topics to the European graphic industry. At the event in Syon Park, London last month, 8 expert speakers presented their views on the sector to a participatory, international audience. The event was moderated by Cees Verweij, President of Intergraf and Chairman of KVGO (NL), and Michael Makin, President of the WPCF and President & CEO of Printing Industries of America (North America). The conference began with a presentation from Charles Jarrold, CEO of our host, the British Printing Industries Federation (BPIF). He informed participants about the state of the graphic industry in the UK, highlighting that “Overall, there are lots of dynamic, interesting things going on in our industry”. Charles went on to explain how “It’s absolute nonsense that print is failing”, pointing out how amazing print is at “providing engagement and depth of experience.” He also clarified that the UK’s economy continues to do OK, despite continued Brexit uncertainty. Charles was followed by Faye Hawkins, Managing Director of First Base Unlimited for Print Power, who explained that creative
Next, Professor Adriaan van der Weel presented the results of the COST Action E-READ project, which shows clearly that “People do tend to read more shallowly from screens”. Reading on paper “yields better comprehension outcomes” – even for younger people (sometimes described as ‘digital natives’). In fact, “Screen inferiority effects compared to paper have increased rather than decreased over time, regardless of age group”, proving that the notion of ‘digital natives’ when it comes to reading does not exist. These conclusions are particularly important for elementary schools, which could lose up to 2/3 of their yearly increase in reading comprehension by using digital reading materials over paper. In his presentation about the latest developments in paper technology, including paper made from vinegar, professor Rodrigo Martins from the New University of Lisbon asked “Can we transform science fiction into reality?” concluding that “We’re very close to this”. Professor Martins made clear that printers have to “change our paradigm to meet the challenges of the future”. Further speakers at Print Matters for the Future included Alejandro Mata Lopez from Fastmarkets RISI, who discussed the details of recent developments in paper
and pulp prices, stating that “The European graphic paper market was clearly paper producer driven until 2018, but conditions are rapidly changing in favour of buyers”. Garry Mellor from the BPIF presented the details of an ongoing project which produces industry best practice guides to make operational improvements in printing companies. According to Garry, “Everyone does something well. The trick is to identify this best practice and systematically share it throughout the organisation.” In the final presentations of the day, delegates heard the insights of Luke Lloyd, Market Research Manager at the International Post Corporation. Luke demonstrated that “Print is seen more positively than email or online ads”, contrary to popular belief. Bernd Zipper, Founder & CEO of zipcon consulting GmbH, closed the conference with his views on online print and the wider industry, stating that “print won’t die; and it will not become worthless; but worthless printers will die”. He explained that the industry is experiencing a “Zeitenwende” (“turn of an era”), in which “Transforming companies have to change to survive in the competitive arena.” In a conclusion which adequately sums up the whole conference, Bernd Zipper affirmed that “Print is transforming and printers need to get on board.”

Mikami Tiger-1800B-MkII’s 1st global showing at ITMA 2019 Mimaki has its first global showing of a brand-new hybrid digital textile printer at ITMA 2019 in Barcelona, Spain from 20-26 June. Mimaki Engineering showcased its broad portfolio of cutting-edge digital print technologies at ITMA 2019 (20-26 June 2019, Fira de Barcelona, Spain). This included the first global showing of its brand-new hybrid digital textile printer, uniquely featuring both direct-to-textile and direct-to-transfer print capabilities. Crucially, these features enable textile and garment manufacturers to achieve unparalleled flexibility and enhanced application opportunities for increased business growth. To facilitate these benefits, the new Mimaki printer also allows multiple sets of inks to be loaded simultaneously, supporting increased fabric range versatility and maximum product variety. As the future of textile printing and for further production benefits, Mimaki also gave a sneak preview of its new and upcoming TA Job Controller software, specifically designed for textile production environments. For use on Mimaki’s successful EDP-awarded Tiger Pro Series and Rimslow TR Series – and all Mimaki textile printers – TA Job Controller enables users to connect one-on-one to the RIP and other devices, for an automated workflow from design to pre-print, print and post-print processes. Featuring pioneering inkjet printing equipment, advanced workflow software and top-performance inks, Mimaki demonstrated how its long-term commitment to the textile arena and extensive investment in R&D can help textile print service providers boost their business. It also showed them how they can cut their production costs and diversify their offering to maintain competitiveness. The key highlight on the Mimaki booth (H3B110) was the company’s flagship industrial digital textile printer, the Mimaki Tiger-1800B MkII – in dye-sublimation configuration. Combining Mimaki’s Japanese expertise in electronics with La Meccanica’s knowhow in building solid and robust belt printer bodies with ‘made-in-Italy’ design, the Tiger-1800B MkII – the latest model of Tiger1800B Series – enables users to produce extremely high-quality products (up to 1200 x 1200 dpi resolution) at up to 385m2/h print
speed, without the need to compromise on production and throughput. The Tiger-1800B MkII features a number of pioneering Mimaki core technologies, including MAPS (Mimaki Advanced Pass System) and NRS (Nozzle Recovery System). MAPS prevents banding and colour-shifting during the printing process by spreading the edge of each pass to create a gradient. This feature, alongside NRS, enables the printer to replace damaged nozzles without stopping production – enhancing the printer’s performance and boosting productivity and print quality for the user. From its advanced TR series, Mimaki also showed the TR300-1850C coating machine and the TR300-1850S steaming machine, and the benefits of a total solution for textile print production. Providing the equipment needed to operate the entire digital textile workflow, Mimaki’s all-in-one solution ensures complete technology compatibility, as well as increased productivity, print quality and reduced production costs. “As a pioneer in textile printing, this industry has always been in our company’s DNA and we are excited to show our extensive textile portfolio at ITMA 2019,” comments Danna Drion, Marketing Manager EMEA, Mimaki Europe. “The potential of digital printing in textiles is clearly evident, and we aim to provide the technology to enable our customers to take full advantage of it and grow profitably.” Mimaki also used ITMA 2019 to showcase its wide range of flagship solutions addressing different textile market segments. These include:
Mimaki TS55-1800: A dye-sublimation business-enhancing printer, the TS55-1800 addresses the entry and mid-level markets offering continuous operation and an unprecedented price-quality ratio. Equipped with Mimaki’s core technologies, the printer achieves high productivity and high-quality print with vibrant colours and vivid imagery and is suitable for interior fabrics, sports and fashion apparel and soft signage. Mimaki UCJV300-160: A roll-to-roll UV LED inkjet integrated printer/cutter, featuring a white ink capability. A versatile printing system, the UCJV300-160 uniquely enables four-layer printing for transformative backlit applications, and five-layer printing, allowing different designs to be viewed on both sides of a substrate simultaneously. Visitors at ITMA 2019 saw the UCJV300-160 printing wallpapers live. At ITMA 2019, the company also demonstrated its cooperation with worldrenowned designers who are driving innovation with cutting-edge and inspirational printed textile applications. As part of this approach, Dutch retail fashion designer, Tessa Koops, used the show to demonstrate the power of Mimaki digital print technology for increased creativity, personalisation and profitability within the fashion industry.
