Mangala Art Printers: Advancing with Heidelberg Print Solutions Mangala Art Printers of Bangalore invests in Heidelberg Speedmaster XL 75 four-colour press and a Suprasetter A106 CtP. With the installation of the best-in-class Prinect workflow solutions, it is now an allinclusive print shop, providing a complete range of print solutions. Recently, Mangala Art Printers invested in brand new Heidelberg equipments – the Speedmaster XL 75 four-color press with a coating unit and Suprasetter A106 CtP, reaffirming its compelling presence in the printing fraternity of the Garden city. With the latest installation, Mangala Art Printers is now a one-stop print shop that owns state-of the–art of equipment from prepress to post press…no mean accomplishment for a small business established in 1979, in a 600 sq. ft. rented area with an initial investment of Rs.39000.

Commercial printing accounts for 80% while packaging jobs contribute the rest of the business at Mangala Art Printers. The latest acquisition Speedmaster XL 75 is a boon helping them cater to both the segments.

Key Notes :

The driving force behind this tremendous growth is founder and proprietor, Sunder Salian, with more than five-decades of printing experience. “There are no shortcuts to any place worth going”, he quotes from memory with a smile. Unassuming and simple, Salian has no airs about him. He believes in the power of hard work. Hailing from a family of farmers, Sundar embarked on his printing career as a press operator for Sharada Press in Mangalore, one of the oldest presses in South India operating since 1900. After a ten-year stint here, he moved to Mytec Process in Bangalore in 1970, pitching in another 9 years. Two-decades of printing experience awakened the entrepreneur in Salian, and in 1979, he established Mangala Art Printers with a two-treadle press and a

cutting machine. In 1983, he invested in a used fourcolor press, which happened to be the first of its kind in Bangalore and three years later, he added more presses In a latest move, Sundar opted for a brand new Heidelberg Speedmaster XL 75 four-colour press with a coating unit and Suprasetter A106 CtP equipment. Designed for the 605 × 745 paper format, the Speedmaster XL 75 offers shortest make-ready times, and consistent high production speeds of up to 15,000 sheets per hour – features that define and decide the competitive edges in technology and productivity. The AutoPlate feature of the Speedmaster XL 75 facilitates plate changes, while the ink data is transferred from the Suprasetter A 106 CtP. The Speedmaster XL 75 offers comprehensive configuration possibilities like coating, gratifying even the most unusual and demanding requirements in commercial and packaging printing. In addition to setting the benchmark for productivity, the Speedmaster XL 75 is highly energy-efficient, making it one of the most eco-friendly machines in its class. Sundar Salian is ecstatic about the Speedmaster, “Heidelberg presses are topnotch in quality and performance, and our Speedmaster XL 75 surpasses expectations. It is a great return on our investment, already attracting more clients and orders.”

Commercial printing accounts for 80% of the business at Mangala Art Printers, while packaging jobs contribute the rest. “Since we are into both commercial and packaging printing, the Speedmaster XL 75 is a boon helping us cater to both segments,” adds Sundar Salian. The other new jewel in the crown – the Heidelberg Suprasetter A106 thermal CtP–high performance pre-press equipment –offers superb quality with maximum production capability. The Suprasetter A106 offers exceptional smart plate handling, and can process 18 plates per hour with plate formats ranging from 370 × 323 mm to 930

× 1,060 mm. Equipped with unique thermal laser technology developed by Heidelberg, the plate-setters are almost totally protected against production failures by the Intelligent Diode System (IDS). Mangala Art Printers has also installed the best-in-class Prinect workflow solutions – the Prinect Pre-press Manager and Prinect Press room Manager – that ensure fully automatic processing of print jobs, by significantly simplifying and accelerating prepress tasks. “With the addition of Heidelberg print solutions, we are now an all- inclusive print shop, providing a complete range of print

solutions to our customers,” beams Sundar No disputing that. Today, ‘Mangala Art Printers’ is a formidable force in the Bangalore printing market, with more than 150 employees on its rolls. The NexGen of ‘Mangala Art Printers’ is raring to go. Sachin and Sajan Kumar, sons of Sundar Salian are full of plans. Sajan has completed a one-year print-promotion course at Germany to get a formal handle on the business. “Just wait and watch,” smiles Sachin, while his brother approves with a nod. Growth is definitely in the cards for ‘Mangala Art Printers’.

Jeff Clarke elected CEO of Kodak The Board of Directors of Eastman Kodak Company has elected Jeffrey J. Clarke as Chief Executive Officer and a member of its Board of Directors. “Jeff is the right person to lead Kodak forward. His combination of strengths and experience in technology, transformation, finance, operations, and international business is precisely what we set out to find in the next leader of Kodak. His past leadership positions have included businesses selling hardware, software and services, and printing – with B2B customers as well as consumers. The Board evaluated many highly qualified and talented people during the search, but it was clear to all of us that Jeff was the one we wanted. We feel extremely confident about Kodak’s prospects with Jeff at the helm,” said James V. Continenza, chairman of the board. “I thank Antonio Perez for his excellent leadership of Kodak through its complex and successful restructuring, and for solidifying our relationships with our valued customers since that time.” Clarke, 52, said, “I have enormous respect for the people of Kodak, and I am excited to join them in moving the company forward to new successes. This enterprise has some extraordinary opportunities, especially those presented by the company’s proprietary

technology in commercial printing, packaging and functional printing. Kodak has made excellent progress, building on one of the most successful reorganizations in recent years, and I look forward to continuing the work underway in transforming Kodak into a global B2B technology leader. “My first priority is to spend my time listening to Kodak’s employees, customers, partners and other stakeholders as part of a detailed evaluation of our operations, market opportunities and approach for success,” continued Clarke. “Once that work is complete, I look forward to sharing our conclusions.” Antonio M. Perez, now Special Advisor to the Board, said, “Jeff Clarke is a talented and proven executive who is well qualified to lead Kodak through our next era, which I believe will be one of innovation and growth. I am excited about the next chapter in the future of this great company.” Prior to joining Kodak, Clarke was a Managing Partner of Augusta Columbia Capital (ACC). Prior to ACC, Clarke was the Chairman of Travelport, Inc., a private travel technology firm, where he served as CEO from 2006-2011. During his tenure, Travelport successfully launched an IPO for its Orbitz business.

Clarke was the Chief Operating Officer of CA, Inc., an enterprise software company, from 2004-2006, where he was responsible for sales, services, distribution, corporate finance, mergers & acquisitions, information technology, corporate strategy and planning. Clarke was an Executive Vice President at Hewlett-Packard Company from 2002-2003. Prior to HP, Clarke was the Chief Financial Officer of Compaq Computer. At DEC from 1985-1998, he served in management roles in international operations, finance and manufacturing. Clarke earned an MBA from Northeastern University. He holds a B.A. in Economics from SUNY Geneseo.

Heidelberg Technical Seminars in Sivakasi & Madurai Heidelberg India recently conducted technical seminars in Sivakasi and Madurai, the two key cities of India with established printing industry. The seminar held at Sivakasi was organized in conjunction with the ‘Sivakasi Master Printer Association’. The morning session of this one-day seminar was dedicated to press operators and supervisors. The technical crew of Heidelberg focused on key topics including press maintenance, quality control, ink-water balance, prepress know-how & solutions. More than 80 operators from printing companies in and around Sivakasi attended the session. The participation was enthusiastic and interactive. As a representative of the participants, a press operator from ‘Standard Press’ said he found the topics discussed to be very useful in an operator’s day-to-day work. The highlight of the show was the overwhelming response to ‘Problem Matrix Solutions’, the troubleshooting poster printed and distributed by Heidelberg India for addressing technical issues in printing. The design of the poster is simple and effective. The chart graphically plots an exhaustive list of ‘reported technical problems’ Vs. ‘reasons’ behind these issues. A quick glance at the graph will help fix the snags with speed and efficiency. “This is troubleshooting at its best”, commented Mr. Nandakumar, Principal of AGP Polytechnic, who was full of praise for Heidelberg’s initiatives to help the printing fraternity.

Mr. Ganesh Kumar, Sr. Sales Manager of Heidelberg handling the Sivakasi and Madurai regions, made a presentation titled ‘Gutenberg 2.0’, projecting the future of printing. Surya Fine Arts made an impressive participation in the Q&A session following the presentation. Mr.Chandramouli, the director of Orient Industries, a playing cards manufacturer, said, he immensely enjoyed the useful exchange of ideas and knowledge. On the heels of the successful Sivakasi event, Heidelberg conducted a technical seminar at Madurai, partnering with the ‘Madurai District Offset Printers Association’ (MADOPA). Madurai is one of the fast-growing markets for Heidelberg with booming potential. The half-a-day seminar witnessed strong participation from nearly 70 printers in the city. As part of the event, MADOPA felicitated Mr. Ramakrishnan, who handled the Madurai region before his recent retirement from Heidelberg. Mr. Jayakarthikeyan, Proprietor of Thee Classic Printers, appreciated Heidelberg India’s efforts towards conducting a seminar in Madurai. He said, “Heidelberg is our preferred print partner, and technology provider. Seminars are a value-addition to the services provided by Heidelberg, a trusted brand among printers like us.”

Commenting on the seminars, Mr. Ganesh Kumar stated, “We view these seminars as perfect tools to increase awareness among press operators, who spend more time with the machines. Such knowledge transfer sessions benefit the operators, and the companies that employ them, which in turn help the print industry thrive.”

The Eco Zone sponsored by Komori Sustainability is more important to print businesses, and to their customers. Clients are demanding transparency in their supply chains, driving the choice of paper and are starting to use environmental performance as a key criterion when choosing a supplier to work with. This is underlined by new legislation which is forcing listed companies to report on their environmental performance. This will in turn push their suppliers into providing information about waste, about carbon footprint and about energy consumption. Sustainability is more than just something to appeal to customers. It is good business practice delivering a provable beneficial impact on margins and on the internal operation of a print business. The Eco Zone tackles these issues, showing how printers can adopt more sustainable methods, how to choose capital equipment with a view to its environmental impact, how to minimise environmental harm through the choice of consumables and how to set up an environmental management system. The Eco Zone also features an eye-catching gallery displaying available products and sustainable ideas from Ipex exhibitors. No print business can afford to ignore sustainability. It is back on the agenda for 2014. As sponsors of the Eco Zone Komori ran demonstrations on the five colour GL40. The machine was fitted with Komori’s H-UV curing system that draws less power than either a standard UV set up or a conventional IR/hot air combination dryer. Other aspects of the press have been designed to minimise power requirements.

Enfocus releases PitStop 12 update 2 Enfocus has released PitStop 12 update 2. Included in the new release of the world’s most popular PDF QA application is an expanded range of tools to quickly check, edit and fix troublesome PDF files. PitStop 12 update 2, in both stand-alone Pro and Server versions, is a free upgrade for all existing PitStop 12 users. “PitStop 12 was a groundbreaking release for Enfocus,” says Andrew Bailes-Collins, Enfocus Senior Product Manager. “Its development was based directly on customer needs and their extensive feedback, secured through surveys, interviews and social media forums. We kept the conversation going after PitStop 12, listening to users telling us what they liked and what additional functionality they needed to tackle common PDF problems in their daily production.”

New features The features in PitStop 12 update 2 give users the ability to gain efficiencies, improve editing and better handle issues when they arise. Axel Robert, Prepress & Graphic Chain Quality Manager at Ubisoft, Montreuil-sousBois, France, is one of the PitStop 12 update 2 beta testers. He commented on the overall release by saying, “PitStop is the ultimate killer PDF knife tool in my every day work. I

find it unthinkable to work without it, and this new update is no exception to the rule.”

Improved selection editing With PitStop Pro 12 update 2, users can carry out functions such as rotating, scaling or skewing of objects by simply moving the mouse to the control points of the object they want to change. Previously, users had to select different tool buttons, which was not user friendly and required extra mouse clicks. Ubisoft’s Axel Robert says of this new feature, “I especially really like the new way you can select and edit an object. It’s so simple and yet so effective!”

Customizable keyboard shortcuts Now users can edit and customize keyboard shortcuts for the majority of PitStop Pro 12 menu items. Multiple sets of shortcuts can be created on the same computer, which means that different operators can apply the shortcuts that best work for them. This will help users to be more productive and efficient. As Amy Menendez, Prepress Specialist, BlueOcean Worldwide, LLC in New York, USA, notes: “Efficiency and accuracy equal productivity, so the new customizable shortcuts are a real advantage. Now all my favorite tools and actions are just a keyboard click away - when the work is ‘flowing’, so am I!”

Add separation names This new action allows the names of colour separations to be generated and positioned within a PDF file. The separation names are individually created for each page and will show all separations including any spot colors. PitStop Pro 12 update 2 also provides several options that show how the separations will appear, giving the user strong control over positioning, font and font size. This functionality is important for any workflow that is processing a large number of PDF files. For example, Jon Morgan, IT Manager at Hopkins Printing in Ohio, USA, reports: “With the number of PDF files that we soft proof, a good quality control element is to show which colours are on a page. With PitStop 12’s new ‘Add Separation Names’ feature, it’s now easy to know exactly which colours - process and spot - are on a page. Thank you, Enfocus!” A host of additional changes to PitStop 12 update 2 and PitStop Server update 2. Version 12 update 2 is a free upgrade for all existing users of PitStop Pro 12 and PitStop Server 12, and is available immediately for download from the Enfocus website.

Ipex 2014 inspires with Youth Day Putting an emphasis on the importance of injecting new blood into the print industry, Ipex 2014 (24-29 March, ExCeL London) ran an exciting programme in the World Print Summit theatre that has been designed specifically for students from secondary schools, colleges and universities. The Ipex ‘Youth Day’ programme featured a range of presentations on the power of print from innovative industry experts, as well as practical workshops, a tour of Ipex and career advice for students. Presentations covered a wide range of engaging and attention-grabbing topics on the versatility of print and its role within the modern day multi-channel marketing mix. These sessions were run by print gurus, including John Charnock from Print International Research, documobi founder Peter Lancaster and Talking Print Co-Founder David Hyams. In addition, prodigal students that have already made their mark on the print and media industry, such as Robin Harrison from t-shirt screen printing company OurKid Apparel, Sarah McLeod, designer behind luxury scarf label NANUKK, and Alex Pink, CEO of Eat Cake Media, gave pertinent insights into their fledging careers.

Students went on a walking tour of Ipex at ExCeL London, meeting key exhibitors and participating in t-shirt screen printing and interactive print workshops. There was also a ‘Print is Big’ treasure hunt for the chance to win an iPad with pioneering software that brings print to life, and a ‘Year’s Worth of Mentoring’ provided by Patrick Martell, CEO of St. Ives and one time apprentice himself. This mentoring includes a minimum of four meetings over the academic year (October – September), providing the winner with invaluable support during their postgraduate studies and help with career planning. “The Youth Day is aimed at any young students who are thinking about a future career in print, communications or graphic design,” says Ruth Clougherty, Content Producer for the Ipex 2014 World Print Summit and the Youth Day. “We’ve worked with a number of organisations – including The Prince’s Trust, BPIF, Shine School Media Awards and Printing Charity to name but a few – to develop a day that is engaging, insightful and of course, fun. It’s a great place for younger people to see print in a light they may not have considered before,

truly grasping its power in the modern communications world.” “We are very pleased to have this opportunity to partner with Ipex 2014 and support the Youth Day,” explains Sue Pandit, Chair of the Shine School Media Awards. “The Shine Awards has been created to recognise young creative talent, encourage a respect for copyright and support schools offering information on publishing and print as a career choice. We know that Ipex is putting together a full programme of interesting and stimulating events which is bound to encourage involvement at the cutting edge of technology across the industry.” Kathy Woodward, CEO of the BPIF, comments: “We’re delighted to work with Ipex on this fantastic programme. For most people around the world, print provides the colour in everyday life, and its benefits are endless. This day inspires the young attendees to pursue a career in an industry that not only possesses a great history, but one that promises to have a great future too.”

“This year’s Ipex reflects the changes in the industry since the event four years ago with the growth in cross media, plus increased reliance and emphasis on cloud-based applications and services,” states Paul Cripps, vice president Sales, EFI Europe Middle East & Africa. “Today the dynamic is more keenly concentrated on business efficiency and growing profitability than ever before. EFI has selected its product showing in-line with the event’s audience

“Since we started in business in 1982 the market has changed radically, and so has our customer base,” says Naresh Raghvani, managing director of Max Print and Media in London. “Digital print has brought a dramatic shift in emphasis, making it a practical proposition to print very short runs and highly customized jobs which we couldn’t have considered when we had only analogue presses. Adding web-to-print with EFI’s Digital StoreFront enables us to find new

Industry leaders say renaissance of print has already begun Frank Romano, professor emeritus at RIT, asked the speakers at an Ipex World Print Summit session if print is doomed or on the verge of a new digital renaissance. They agreed that they see evidence already of print’s expansion into new and innovative directions such as variable data or high-margin industrial applications. Keynote speakers EFI™ CEO Guy Gecht and Landa Corp. CEO Benny Landa addressed a packed audience on the second day of the London-based exhibition. The session looked at trends and the drivers for success needed by today’s print companies. “Print using digital technology, such as for direct mail, is on the rise. No other media gets attention in the same way, and digital lets our industry add value,” Gecht told the audience. “We have to realize that in five to ten years from now, there may be less print, but what is left will be higher in value.” “Unlike publishing, most commercial print and packaging apps can simply not be replaced by digital media,” Landa said. Gecht also said EFI is passionate about building relationships with customers, most of which are already involved with digital print and have already moved up this value chain. In the run-up to Ipex his extensive European program of visits included companies in Germany, France and in the UK. “The success of these businesses lies mostly with those where a significant part uses digital technology, and there is a definite shift from very long runs to tailored, on-demand jobs with VDP,” Gecht continued. “EFI’s decision to come to Ipex was based on a long-term plan to double down on customers in Europe, which included significantly increased investments in the region with acquisitions, increased support staff and building a large new demo centre in Brussels. Meeting our customers is more important to us than the size of the trade show.” The two discussed the much-anticipated Nanographic press technology driven by the EFI Fiery®. “The incorporation of EFI technology into the Nanographic press is a technological challenge our team is excited about and one that will make Fiery an even better technology for the future,” Gecht concluded.

Nordic Day at KBA in Radebeul The open-house season 2014 kicked off on 13 March with a KBA Nordic Day event at the plant in Radebeul. Printers and potential customers from Sweden and Finland were invited to find out more about the latest developments regarding medium and large-format Rapidas. The day began with a presentation on the latest innovations and trends in sheetfed offset. The visiting Scandinavian printers were treated to a series of print demos starting with HR-UV on a Rapida 75. This was followed by the production of four-colour print samples with high ink coverage printed on 80gsm (51½lb) paper. The subsequent job was on board with additional drip-off finishing effects. The next demo took place on an eight-colour Rapida 105 with a focus on comparing conventional and HR-UV or LED-UV printing. The visitors could thus directly examine the results of each drying process in four-colour perfecting. Last but not least the printing instructors demonstrated fast job changes on a Rapida 145 with simultaneous printing plate changing and inline finishing with drip-off coating. Further events are in the pipeline. On 14 and 15 May packaging printers from all over the world will gather at KBA under the banner “Packaging. Competence. Network. 2014”, just after Interpack in Düsseldorf has closed its doors. This is followed by an event on 13 June for label printers and on 27 June everything will revolve around commercial printing. Interested parties are welcome to contact their sales representative responsible to register for these events. Is the ink really solid? The Scandinavian print experts examine the freshly printed sheets produced using HR-UV

KBA Asia Pacific wins customers’ interest in workflow solutions Following the recent announcement of KBA’s partnership with Optimus for the worldwide sales and distribution of their management information systems (MIS), this new collaboration has already started to bear fruit in Singapore. A local printing house will be implementing the Optimus Dash MIS in the near future. Health, money and prosperity is what everyone wishes for during the Chinese New Year. To kick-off the Lunar Year of the horse successfully KBA Asia Pacific invited customers from various print shops throughout Singapore to an informative event that promised exactly that: a tool to increase efficiency, save money and boost profitability. The seminar took place at the German Centre in Singapore on 20 February. After starting their day with a Bavarian breakfast the print experts were welcomed by KBA Asia Pacific managing director Stefan Segger. Optimus CEO and co-owner Henny van Esch, LogoTronic product manager Chris Waschke and KBA IT-specialist for system integration Martin Beer travelled to Singapore to present an overview of KBA and Optimus workflow modules and their functionalities, which included a live demonstration of the interaction of both systems. “Apart from our printing technology KBA LogoTronic and Optimus Dash MIS, either

as standalone solutions or in combination, offer our customers solutions that help them become even more efficient by optimizing all surrounding processes and activities,” says Chris Waschke. Major advantages of the Optimus Dash are its flexibility and user-friendliness. “Too often various systems are in use in a company’s different departments. Such so-called networked islands hardly ever contribute to more efficiency. Optimus Dash together with LogoTronic Professional, on the other hand, presents a closed-loop workflow solution tailored to the needs of each individual customer. It even offers the possibility of integration with existing subsystems if that’s the customer’s wish,” explains the product manager. The first order for an Optimus Dash MIS placed by a print firm in Singapore was already finalised during the visit of the experts from Europe. All of the company’s printing presses will automatically feed data into the system using connect boxes and post-press equipment will be connected via user-friendly browser interfaces. From the quote to the finished print product and even through to

shipping, with a setup like this all data has to be entered into the system only once and it is made available across all departments. The management level in particular will soon benefit from the data that helps identify optimising potential. Managing director Stefan Segger: “For a long time MIS systems were regarded as too expensive for mid-sized print shops. In our seminar we were able to illustrate that an MIS tailored to the specific needs of each of our customers often becomes vital given the changing media landscape and shrinking margins.”

Integrated workflow solutions are becoming increasingly more popular in printing firms in Southeast Asia, too. This was seen at the joint workflow seminar from KBA and Optimus in Singapore

Streamlining plate production, GemPlate is rated for up to 100,000 impressions and does not require any pre- or post-baking processes. GemPlate has been engineered for many press platforms including those with Delta dampening systems. Customers using GemPlate have experienced excellent on press performance, high solvent resistance, wide press latitude and compatibility with a broad range of fountain solutions and additives. Ralph Jenkins, Presstek’s Worldwide Sales and Marketing Director, states, “Now printers have an even more robust offset plate to choose from that minimizes plate production costs and retains a high image contrast from a 1-99% dot at 200 lpi.” Mr. Jenkins adds that customer feedback has been extremely encouraging and we fully expect commercial availability in Q3.

Kodak to phase out production at Leeds plant As part of its strategic, global manufacturing plan, Kodak will phase out production at its Leeds, U.K., plant, beginning that process in the third quarter of 2014 and completing it in mid- to late-2015. Price noted that employees at the Leeds plant will be offered separation benefits and transition services. As a result of the action, Kodak expects to incur total charges of $3040 million, $20-25 million of which would be non-cash related to accelerated depreciation and asset write-offs. “Our employees in Leeds have a long history of capably serving our customers with the quality products they have come to expect from Kodak,” said Robert Price, General Manager of Worldwide Plate Operations. “However, with the investments we made last year in the new high-speed manufacturing line, the capacity of our Osterode plant can now meet future demand growth from Europe, the Middle East and Africa.” Kodak is making manufacturing investments to increase capacity to meet rapidly growing

demand for its process-free printing plates, while also making worldwide plate production more efficient, and enabling better customer service across its digital plate portfolio. “This is our strategy to win and best serve customers in the printing plate market,” noted Brad Kruchten, President, Graphics, Entertainment & Commercial Films. “The technology strength of our KODAK SONORA Process Free Plates, combined with our plan to increase production capacity and locate our manufacturing closer to customers, will enable us to serve the many customers who are embracing this product. More than 450 customers currently use SONORA Plates, and many more are waiting to switch to the product. Today, KODAK SONORA Process Free Plates are manufactured in Europe for distribution to customers around the world. Kodak plans to increase that capacity, as well as begin manufacturing SONORA Plates at sites in Asia and the Americas. In Europe, Kodak has invested in its

Osterode, Germany, plant where an upgraded, high-speed SONORA Plate manufacturing line increases capacity for sales growth. The Osterode plant began shipping SONORA Plates to customers in November 2013, and volume shipped from this site is increasing every month. In Asia, Kodak has completed an upgrade of its Xiamen, China, plant to produce SONORA Plates. As with Osterode, the line at Xiamen is capable of high-speed production. This provides increased capacity to meet demand for SONORA Plates, and improves efficiency across the entire plate portfolio. Kodak is also selecting a site to better serve customers in the Americas.

Q.I. Press Controls equips DGM430 at McLaren McLaren Press Graphics rejuvenates DGM Press with mRC-3D closed-loop full-colour register from Q.I. Press Controls Q.I. Press Controls has received a key order from McLaren Press Graphics, a leading commercial printer based in Bracebridge, Ontario, Canada. It has sold its advanced, latest generation closedloop mRC-3D full-colour register system complete with cut-off controls for McLaren’s DGM430 coldset single-width press line.

Replacement investment

“Q.I. Press Controls will allow close the loop on McLaren’s press controls as the current system does not address the bottleneck of manual cut-off controls. Q.I. Press Controls’ mRC-3D system would address this weak link in their automation.”

Key Notes : > To resolve cut-off waste issues while taking advantage of the new camera technology. > The system will be fully integrated into McLaren’s press in the Spring of 2014. > The mRC-3D’s depthscanning principle is ideal for presses like DGM430 with configuration of fairly long web leads.

24

March 2014

For McLaren Press Graphics this investment replaces their existing register system, which did not include cut-off controls. Drew McLaren, President of McLaren Press Graphics: “We were one of the first commercial printers to install registration controls on a nonheatset press back in the 1990’s, and we recognized the ROI immediately. Given the relatively high cost of this technology at the time, we still experienced significant cost savings to justify this investment. This was achieved despite the fact that we were running lower cost uncoated substrates than typical heat-set installations, who were the first companies to invest in this technology because they were running higher cost coated stocks yielding greater savings and quicker ROI’s”. With Q.I. Press Controls’ mRC-3D they wanted to resolve their cut-off waste issues while taking advantage of the new camera technology to further enhance their quality process and improve their waste numbers. Drew McLaren: “Originally we didn’t realize how different the product was from other

brands on the market.” What McLaren wanted was an all-in-one, cost effective, state-of-the-art solution for their coldset application. They needed to look no further than Q.I Press Controls’ mRC-3D register system. The mRC-3D’s depth-scanning principle is ideal for their DGM430 press configuration, which has some fairly long web leads. The mRC-3D functions perfectly in such an environment. Drew McLaren: “Q.I. Press Controls will allow us to close the loop on our press controls as our current system does not address the bottleneck of manual cut-off controls. We had been looking for a system that would address this weak link in our automation and Q.I. Press Controls’ mRC-3D system will allow us to now include this component, while addressing registration controls that perform quicker and provide better feedback to our press operators.”

McLaren’s DGM430 McLaren’s coldset production line is a DGM430 with a 89 cm (35”) web width and 57.8 cm (22 ¾”) cut-off. The press line consists of seven four high colour units with press vintages dating from 1994, 1998 and 2008 and has two (½ and ¼) DGM 1035 folders. The most widely utilized four colour units will be equipped with a mRC-3D register camera, with the AIMS (Automatic Ink Mist Shield). The total order comprises eight mRC-3D register cameras including processors and operating system. This fully automated closed-loop

Important link This order was finalized with the assistance of Graphic Machinery Sales, the agent for Q.I. Press Controls in Canada. As part of Q.I. Press Controls’ worldwide network, this company was an important link in capturing the order. Graphic Machinery Sales will also play a key role during the implementation phase as well as in providing local service. The system will be fully integrated into McLaren’s press in the Spring of 2014 complete with a full training program.

McLaren Press Graphics McLaren Press Graphics, a full-service, family owned printing company was founded in 1977, managed by two generations of the McLaren family. With the combination of prepress, coldset web, sheetfed offset, and print finishing, this quality-conscious company has expanded to become one of the leading 50 print companies in Canada. It was amongst the first in Canada to introduce an automatic register system on its coldset web press. McLaren Press Graphics processes upwards of 3,000 orders per year, including full-colour newspapers and periodicals with circulation figures of ranging between 3,000 and 75,000 copies. Furthermore the company produces flyers, brochures, magazines and specials with circulations of up to one million; all this adds up to an output of more than1.4 billion pages annually. McLaren employs a staff of 55 employees and has a separate division for digital publishing and online revenue generating products for their publishing clients.

Q.I. Press Controls will continue EAE’s core business at the firm’s Ahrensburg (near Hamburg) and Atlanta (USA) locations. The Oosterhout, Netherlands-based company is an international specialist for products which automate printing processes to a high degree, thereby reducing waste paper and leading to more quality consistency. “The acquisition of EAE underlines our commitment to the printing industry,” says Erik van Holten, Chairman of Q.I. Press Controls. “Innovation has always been key to our success. With the acquisition of EAE, Q.I. Press Controls is able to meet the requirements of the printing industry in an even more comprehensive way. Through the expansion of our product portfolio we have become an even more interesting business partner to our customers.” The committee of creditors on March 25, 2014 unanimously agreed to sell EAE Ahrensburg Electronic GmbH. Nearly all employees who are currently working for EAE, will continue to work for the company.

With the agreement of the creditors to continue unrestricted business operations, EAE was in the past months able to continue fulfilling all existing and all new orders without delay. In Germany, in Europe and in the USA, EAE won contracts for new projects. At the same time, additional steps were introduced to increase profitability and efforts to find an investor were redoubled. Q.I. Press Controls plans to continue EAE’s innovative services which are focused on optimizing the printing process. “By joining together and pooling the abilities of both companies, we are getting closer to reaching our goal of simplifying the steadily growing complexity of the printing process through the use of innovative concepts”, said Menno Jansen, Chairman of Q.I. Press Controls. The Ahrensburg-based EAE Ahrensburg Electronic GmbH is active in graphic industries, automation solutions and automation technology. The company’s solutions are being used in all areas of a newspaper printing plant – from pre press to the mailroom. Worldwide more than 550 newspaper printing plants are using EAE’s control systems to produce more than 125 million newspapers each day.

The EAE had filed for bankruptcy protection in August 2013 with the district court in Reinbek. As part of the proceedings the company was restructured and relieved of bad debt. Among other things, its stage technology business was sold and the switchboard production stopped. Since a sale of EAE did not succeed during that time, the company filed for bankruptcy on December 1, 2013.

Toray brings good news for newspapers at WAN-IFRA’s Printing Summit Toray Industries Inc., manufacturer of waterless offset plate technology, presented a “good news” story to the newspaper industry at the WAN-IFRA Printing Summit, in Munich, March 19 – 20, 2014. The global conference on newspaper production heard how waterless offset printing is an environmentally friendly printing process that delivers higher quality, reduces waste and increases the productivity of newspaper and semi-commercial printing operations. “In an industry that is under pressure, seemingly from all sides, we are excited to be bringing some good news to newspaper printers and publishers at the WAN-IFRA Printing Summit,” said Mr. Mitsunori Hayashi, General Manager of Sales and Marketing for the Toray Graphics factory in the Czech Republic. “Ecological printing is no longer seen as an expensive luxury, but as a profitable business. For newspaper printers, taking advantage of the benefits of waterless printing is easier than they may think. We are pleased to be able to help our customers improve productivity, increase asset utilization, open up new business opportunities and maintain their competitive edge as a result of the printing advantages Toray Waterless plates deliver. The ability to offer high quality, without changing the ink enables them to enter the semi commercial and magazine market. This, increased quality, productivity and profitability, can be passed along to newspaper publishers and will be appreciated by newspaper readers.”

Innovation Focus Among the topics highlighted at the summit for newspaper publishers and printers, were ways to streamline production without abandoning variety, making print interactive

26

March 2014

and differentiate to keep print alive as well as updates on innovations in the print process and how to combine digital and litho production. “For most of today’s newspaper printing plants, whether independent or belonging to a publishing house,” added Mr. Hayashi, “making production more efficient and lower cost is no longer simply an option. It is a necessity – to survive and to stay competitive. This conference is a fantastic platform for Toray to present to the region’s successful newspaper publishers and printers ways they can further improve their print production and their services for their customers, while at the same time introducing significant economies. The reception to this message in other regions has convinced us that the combination of benefits offered by waterless printing for newspapers will be very interesting for all printers and publishers.”

Waterless Plate Manufacturing: Closer to Home In order to make waterless technology more accessible to Europe, North America and the Middle East, Toray recently opened a new European plate production facility in Prostějov, Czech Republic. The factory, which opened in November 2013, produces all types of CTP waterless plates for the European, American and Middle Eastern markets, including the highly durable MX10 plate for newspaper and semi-commercial printing. Retrofit was especially developed for control consoles of the press lines LITHOMAN/

ROTOMAN/POLYMAN that are equipped with HP 1000 controls, which are supposed to be exchanged completely. The latest generation of control console servers can be integrated to the older control consoles without any problems. Therewith the customer gets up-to-date hardware, analog a new printing press. Besides the obvious improvement of the availability of the press also the ease of use for the printer, enabled by modern touch screens, is increased significantly. Accessing the press via remote control with the manroland web systems TeleSupport Center (TSC) is also an option now. This has not been possible without the retrofit. Hans-Joachim Stephan, Head of Production at Bruehlsche Universitaetsdruckerei in Giessen, is impressed by the latest technology: “Especially when it comes to

operation at the control console, we can realize the quantum leap in development. The trainings were very helpful to handle the change. Our staff is stoked by the central control functions. The reduced waste rates, anyhow, are the major benefit – assured by the possibility of pre-inking with a PECOM Press Manager, which has not been available before. This cost reduction, in principle, makes the retrofit pay for itself.”

Konica Minolta drives thought-leadership at Ipex World Print Summit Real-life examples of where high street brands have dramatically increased revenues through using cross media and other hi-tech applications – with print at its heart – have been outlined to a crowded World Print Summit at IPEX 2014. At Ipex in London’s ExCel centre, marketers and print specialists joined forces to pose the question, “Can Print Co-exist with Digital Communications in the future?” This was the title for Konica Minolta’s thought-leadership panel chaired by Olaf Lorenz, General Manager, International Marketing Division, Konica Minolta Business Solutions Europe, which also included panelists Andy Barber, Chairman of PROKOM and General Manager, imail division of UK Mail; Andy Fry, Managing Director, Nova Direct; and Charlotte Graham-Cumming, Director, Ice Blue Sky creative agency. More than 100 visitors were told how one hybrid mail solution had netted a €2million revenue boost for the Co-operative Group, a customer of imail, while another case study revealed that an integrated marketing campaign – with direct mail at its heart – had meant supplies of rhubarb at Waitrose had sold out within four days, instead of 14. Andy Fry presented how augmented reality was a big business driver for print. One example showed how dinosaurs are being brought back to life by combining the power of print with latest digital technology. Software typically used in games technology for children is being re-engineered for practical applications in the real world. The potential for print is enormous, according to Andy Fry, Managing Director of Nova Direct, who said using augmented reality for everyday uses is just at the start of a profitable journey into the future. Mr Lorenz said: “From the discussions, it is clear that there is a world of opportunity for print providers to optimise their revenues through enabling new, profitable business by creating value through the many new applications in an increasingly digital world. Print is recognised as a central driver and crucial part of the communication mix.”

IFS and Fujifilm collaboration at Ipex IFS, collaborating with Fujifilm at Ipex 2014, showcased a Lasermax unwinder and a Horizon StitchLiner 6000, to complement Fujifilm’s Jet Press 540W digital inkjet web press and Jet Press 720 B2 sheet-fed digital inkjet press. “It is great to be working with Fujifilm,” comments Bryan Godwyn, joint managing director of IFS. “Horizon has a long-history of working alongside leading manufacturers in the print production environment and we are pleased to be continuing this tradition with Fujifilm.” He continues: “There are many benefits to a roll-to-roll production. The main attraction is the consistency of the substrate from the roll plus the production time gains compared to loading sheet feed systems. There is also the enhanced book of one technology with the ability to print optical marks to control the cut position between different jobs. “Another consideration is the cost savings of

specifying a roll of paper. As long as there are no specific substrate demands this enables the printer to buy paper, arguably the biggest expense for any job, much more cost effectively.” Graham Leeson, head of European communications – Fujifilm Graphic Systems adds: “Our focus at Ipex is to demonstrate the business model for short run digital print produced on our inkjet presses, whether it is produced on a reel or as sheets. Our collaboration with IFS at Ipex helps us to achieve this and fits with our goal of ensuring we operate our stand as close to a true production environment as possible, producing a variety of finished print. “The Jet Press 540W digital inkjet web press is a perfect fit for the production of a variety of short run magazines, books, catalogues and journals. Beverage Packages: Uniqueness Counts If you want to sell your product successfully, you have to make it stand out.

“Less is more” is the consumer’s motto when it comes to beverages: less additives and preservatives and zero sugar. With packages the opposite is true, for they have to be individually designed, promise product quality and possibly offer extra utility as well. Such consumer behaviour is not exactly kind to the environment. The packaging sector is countering this with resource-conserving and low-cost packaging technology.

Package manufacturers are faced with major challenges. How can they make containers even more attractive and consumer-friendly? And how can they conserve resources and go easy on the environment at the same time? interpack 2014 to address the needs of the market.

“As real as knowing where you belong” – with this slogan of the new Ruhr district edition of the Brinkhoff’s No. 1 beer brand, the Dortmund Brinkhoff’s brewery is targeting the hearts of people in the area. On the labels of the special edition, the company is showing 40 sights from 21 Ruhr district towns. Brinkhoff’s No. 1 is also supplying the information to go with them, with a description of the pictured sight on the reverse of the peelable labels. Local patriotism and beer-drinking – a sure source of sales. “Our edition has really gone down well,” says Brinkhoff’s Marketing Manager Andreas Thielemann. If you want to sell your product successfully, you have to make it stand out. This applies particularly to the embattled beverage market. The times when mineral water, beer and schnapps were sold in standard bottles are long gone. Thanks to the unstoppable rise of alcoholic mixed drinks and aromatised soft drinks,

beverage diversity has become almost overwhelming. Without professional brand building, i.e. a communication strategy that makes one’s own brand the must-have for a certain customer group, spring owners and breweries no longer have a chance in this highly competitive market. “The general goal is to create a visual vocabulary that can be seen, felt and understood within five seconds or less,” explains brand expert Terri Goldstein of The Goldstein Group, a US marketing company. While Brinkhoff’s with its home-region labels chooses a relatively low-key vocabulary, other beverage manufacturers are taking more elaborate measures – by embossing brand names in the bottles and using colours and memorable motifs so that no two bottles are the same. Individualisation is the name of the trend that is growing in popularity in the beverage sector.

A bottle for every occasion One of the pioneers of this trend is the Swedish company Absolut Vodka. In 2012 it launched its Absolut Unique series, a limited edition of four million glass bottles that are above all two things: colourful and unique. Because no two bottles are alike. To enhance this effect, each bottle bears its own number – like limited prints of a work of art. Consumers love this, and Absolut Vodka now ranks among the most

More and more beverage manufacturers are therefore reverting to one-way plastic bottles and cans. In Germany, the “Bund Getränkeverpackungen der Zukunft” was even founded last year to advocate a renaissance of one-way bottles and cans. Its lobbying has evidently been successful, as, according to information from NABU, the German nature conservation organisation, the one-way package rate in Germany has already reached 50 per cent, and the figure continues to rise. Benjamin Bongardt, head of resource policy at NABU, is concerned: “The environment only benefits when we choose the right beverage package solution and make it increasingly efficient. A single multi-way bottle replaces up to 50 oneway bottles – and is additionally recycled at the end of its life. One-way is therefore synonymous with active resource wastage.” Packaging specialist Krones has considerably reduced the material usage and weight of its extra-light PET bottles. (Photo: Krones)

popular distilled beverages worldwide. The trend towards uniqueness can also be observed with multi-way bottles. Every major beverage manufacturer uses individualised containers today in order to appeal more directly to target groups. Beverage manufacturer Sinalco, for example, has introduced a 0.5 litre multi-way bottle for its lemonades so that it can access smaller households as well. For its part, Staatl. Fachingen in Hesse markets its mineral water in special faceted bottles that it sells in three different sizes exclusively to restaurants. However, although individual beverage packages generate higher sales, they have their drawbacks. Elaborately designed bottles drive up development and production costs and burden the environment. To counteract the littering of towns and the countryside, countries like Germany have set themselves the goal of high re-use rates in the beverage package sector. The growing share of individualised multi-way bottles is encouraging the opposite, however: return rates are falling, transport distances from the bottler to the consumer are growing and the life-cycle assessment of multi-way bottles is deteriorating. All the same, individual bottles are often lighter than comparable standard multi-way bottles, which offsets this effect to some extent. Nevertheless, the growing diversity of bottles is increasing the complexity of sorting and pushing up costs.

Package manufacturers are therefore faced with major challenges. How can they make containers even more attractive and consumer-friendly? And how can they conserve resources and go easy on the environment at the same time? The performance profiles of packaging machines are also becoming more exacting: “We have to think about how bottlers can boost the energy efficiency and eco-friendliness of product packaging at lower cost,” says Product Manager Jochen Forsthövel of Bavarian filling technology and packaging machine manufacturer Krones. At interpack 2014 in Düsseldorf from 8 to 14 May 2014, visitors can see for themselves the strategies and products that companies are using to address the needs of the market.

interpack promises an abundance of exciting impressions, as packaging specialists are working flat out to innovate and cut costs.

Saving materials on a broad front One of the main focuses at Krones, for an example, is to develop PET bottles and in doing so cut down on valuable material. The company’s new 0.5 litre “PET lite 9.9 carbonated” bottle weighs only 9.9 grams – about a third less than conventional PET bottles of this size. The container’s special design nevertheless ensures that it stands firm and can be safely transported. Krones is also innovating with PET bottles that can be filled with hot product, e.g. fruit juice. These bottles usually have to have a stronger design as they readily shrink on exposure to heat. Krones’ novel NitroHotfill process keeps containers stable during filling by raising the internal pressure with nitrogen. “We can thus achieve weight savings in both the bottle body and mouthpiece,” explains Product Manager Forsthövel. French manufacturer BTC Concepts is showing the direction that plastic bottle development may soon be taking. By screwing three individual bottles together to create a single large one, the Paris company has created a three-in-one container whose innovative design alone sets it apart from other bottles. The BottleClips concept also conserves resources, as the bottles save storage space and hence fuel during transport. The consumer for his part wastes less product, as the three bottles are opened one after the other.

The bottle of the future from BTC Concepts consists of three individual bottles screwed together. It is innovative and offers consumers variety. (Photo: Deutscher Verpackungspreis)

Saving energy, modern labelling machines need less and less electricity by dispensing with energy-intensive thermal processes like hot gluing. (Photo: Krones)

Cost-cutting innovation can be found not only in bottle design, production and filling, but also in downstream labelling. Krones’ new DecoType direct printing system is capable of embellishing uneven surfaces with a digital inkjet process – so there is no need for a special label and the associated adhesives materials. But this does not mean the end of classical labelling. Here, too, there is huge innovation potential, as the Italian specialist PD Labellers is demonstrating with its new Adhesleeve rotary labelling machine. To save energy, the machine operates with acrylic adhesive to bond the labels instead of a hotmelt adhesive. PE Labellers also claims that Adhesleeve is capable of using labels 30 per cent thinner than conventional ones. The Dortmund KHS company sees itself as the “First Choice in Technology and Service” in beverage packaging. At interpack, the specialist in packaging solutions and filling plant is presenting its new KHS INNOPACK Kisters TSP A-H-TPFO packaging machine, which, it claims, is particularly versatile in its use, cuts costs in production and sets new

standards of sustainability. “The machine is modular and thus also equipped for future needs and customer wishes,” explains KHS expert Frederike Arndt. A special feature of the machine is that, thanks to a special device, it has recently become capable of packaging PET bottles in fully enclosed packages. The advantage of this is that these packages are stronger than current conventional shrink packs, thus ousting extra cardboard trays for stability and reducing the input of materials. The wraparound shrink packing process for packages in the new KHS INNOPACK can also be performed in a shrink tunnel with either electric or gas heating. “Energy costs can thus be reduced by up to 50 per cent over conventional electric heating,” Arndt explains. There is also an energy-saving package that can be optionally integrated in any shrink tunnel variant. Here, a roller shutter system automatically closes the opening for product inlet and outlet during packaging machine stoppages to facilitate extra energy savings of up to 20 per cent.

Webtech Labels installs two further GIDUE presses Mumbai based Webtech Labels has recently installed two new GIDUE presses. Established in 1998, today Webtech Labels is among the largest Indian manufacturers of self-adhesive labels, supplying its products to some of the best-known brands in India. It is led by Amar B. Chhajed who is also the Managing Director of the company. Since 2013, Webtech is a part of the Finland based Huhtamaki Oyj’s subsidiary - PPL Huhtamaki. Webtech provides cost-effective, innovative technological solutions and high quality packaging to customers. The collaboration with Nuova GIDUE started in 2008, when they first decided to invest on two entry level machines. With the introduction of these two machines Webtech could try the innovative flexo head patented by GIDUE, the Flower, and realized the “ease of operation” concept used on all GIDUE presses. Every since, Webtech has added GIDUE Combat presses every year to print 8 and 10 colors labels, making a total of 5 presses in 4 years. The recent acquisition of two state-of-the-art Gidue presses – an M3 and an M5 Digital Flexo presses – makes Webtech Labels one of largest Gidue users with a total of 7 presses. The Combat M3 has been installed in their Mumbai plant. It is a fully servo press that has been bought with a configuration of 370mm width, 8 colours with driven chilled roll. It is a printing machine dedicated to the Labels & Packaging market and it can handle self-adhesive labels, 15 µm unsupported PET, 20 µm BOPP, 38 µm BOPP for mineral water, all shrinkable sleeves, and up to 350 gsm carton.

Xeikon Café on Packaging Innovations How can digital production enhance and transform the label and packaging industry? How can it turn short to medium runs into profitable business? Label and packaging printers and converters as well as print buyers can find out at the Xeikon Café hosted by Xeikon and Xeikon Aura Partners from May 20 thru May 22, 2014. The event offers them a unique opportunity to discover and explore how digital production could also drive and improve their business.

Proven Formula The concept of a Xeikon Café is simple but effective: to provide an informal knowledge exchange platform covering the different aspects of digitalizing print production, while cutting through the information overload. With this aim in mind, Xeikon and its Aura Partners have been inviting printers and converters to come along to local one-day events around the world, organized around a central theme or topic such as digital printing technology, converting equipment, print media, software, or consumables. Through demonstrations, presentations, workshops and discussions, participants receive firsthand actionable information and advice on industry innovations and trends. This time the Xeikon Café centers on packaging innovations and will run over not just one, but three days.

The Innovative Power of Co-creation

outperforms the quality offered by traditional production methods, while even improving profit margins, is an entirely different matter.” There is indeed more to label and packaging production than printing great designs. This is why Xeikon has been listening closely to its customers all along. And so have its Aura Partners. Together they have developed total solutions, or suites – carefully selected and painstakingly tested combinations of equipment, technologies and capabilities, enabling print service providers to produce the finished product as cost-effectively as possible. So far, they have developed solutions for folding cartons, self-adhesive labels, heat transfer labels and in-mold labels. “Close collaboration is the key,” says Weymans. “The innovative power of co-creation is huge. The latest addition to our application suite is a case in point. It’s the first integrated solution ever to make it possible to use digital printing as part of an automated in-mold label production process. It’s nothing short of a game changer.”

Four Application Suites in Action Participants will see the complete range of label and packaging application suites in action, i.e. a Folding Carton Suite, a SelfAdhesive Label Suite, a Heat Transfer Label Suite and an In-Mold Label Suite, featuring live job preparation, production and finishing of real-life and purpose-built applications. In addition, a variety of applications will be on

display, illustrating what digital production can achieve. During several technical seminars, Aura Partners involved in the development of the label and packaging application suites will describe their contributions in detail. Participants will learn why certain choices in terms of equipment, tools and consumables, software or print media were made. Xeikon customers will share their experience of using their application suites and talk about how this has contributed to the success of their business. And last but not least, there will be plenty of opportunity to ask questions, exchange ideas on digital production and explore opportunities with Aura Partners, Xeikon staff and fellow participants. Anyone interested in attending should stay tuned in the weeks ahead, as Xeikon will be releasing more information about each of the label and packaging application suites on show.

Making a product stand out on the shelves, building a recognizable brand and protecting it against counterfeiting is no mean feat nowadays. And doing so without affecting profitability is an even taller order. Different label and packaging applications have very different requirements, but they all call for uncompromising quality and cost-effective short to medium runs. And therein lies the innovation that Xeikon and its Aura Partners have managed to achieve, as Filip Weymans, Xeikon’s Director of Segment Marketing Labels & Packaging, explains: “Digital printing answers many of the challenges today’s print producers and converters face. But integrating a digital press into an otherwise traditional workflow is one thing; aligning all processes and equipment, including tools and consumables, in such a way that the result matches or even

Workflow automation shifts gears to “lights out” Esko Automation Engine smart workflow tickets route designs intelligently and with as little operator intervention as possible, from design to press-ready printing plates. Workflow automation stretches beyond printing and finishing to integrate with brand design at the start and logistics at the end. With new modules such as Automation Engine Connect, prepress workflow is no longer an island of expertise, but the centerpiece that integrates external data from whatever source, internal or external, with the packaging production workflow. Esko Color Engine is embedded throughout the entire workflow to ensure accurate and consistent colour reproduction from start to finish. It is linked to the PantoneLIVE™ cloud for flawless colour communication. The flexo platemaking process, the last step before the printing press, becomes more automated with the CDI devices that ensure integrated plate imaging. Quality is maintained by Esko Full HD Flexo, the first and only fully digital platemaking workflow in the industry.

Smart templates rule A smart design template connected to

content in external databases is the basis for full end-to-end workflow automation. With Esko Dynamic Content, graphics and content are strictly separated and critical content resides securely in cloud-based asset storage. Templates retrieve content from the brand owner’s packaging management system, where changes must only be made once in order to flow through the system to ensure packaging production within the constraints of brand and legal guidelines.

Quality comes first With a successful automated workflow, the focus of a prepress operator shifts entirely to quality checking. At Ipex, Esko showed for the first time an ArtPro companion, a new cross platform software application dedicated to quality checking of packaging production files. Integration of the workflow with inline visual inspection systems closes the loop with the printing process while integration with CAPE palletization and logistics software provides ample opportunity to produce environmentally friendly packaging through a reduction in supply chain waste. Finally, the unrivalled quality produced on Esko’s highly popular Kongsberg digital cutting tables for

packaging, display and sign applications, provides automation, increased productivity and outstanding precision.

Interactive editing is “task driven” For its latest software release, Esko has focused its research and development efforts on improving the operator experience. Operators will execute their most critical tasks, quality checking and exception handling, in a much more efficient way with a task-driven GUI. Only the tools required for a task are on the operator’s desktop or mobile device. Intelligent wizards guide the operator through expert processes, with 3D and preview of finishing operations as mainstream technology. States Bates: “In the new FlexProof, profiling brand colours for a multi-channel press setup becomes child’s play. With Studio and Store Visualizer, Esko has pioneered the introduction of 3D visualization for virtual mock-ups and storesimulation in the packaging workflow.”

Online supply chain integration Integrated packaging-savvy production and asset management systems dramatically improve time to market and reduce cost. They also support operations that run virtually anywhere in the world, in a home office or even on the road. WebCenter will take this a step further with new technology that dramatically simplifies the transfer of jobs from one production facility to another,

handing over entire projects. Another facet is the integration with CHILI Publisher that turns WebCenter into an online editing platform for any remote stakeholder in the process. Dedicated tools for project management and supply chain collaboration will make WebCenter the preferred backbone for global and local packaging production facilities. “Ipex is an important platform to communicate with a highly diverse audience that is looking for future-oriented, sustainable solutions,” concludes Bates. “We’re looking forward to manifold encounters with various players in the packaging supply chain, in the first place with people looking at investing in a digital press for whom Esko solutions are an enabler for color management and workflow automation. Secondly brand

Brand Management software as a marketleading solution and deploy it for supply chain integration and packaging project management. Thirdly, packaging converters who leverage our solutions for the utmost in quality and productivity, and know us as a trusted business partner that delivers substantial benefits to an ever-growing customer base. The Label Says it All Security logistics labels from Schreiner ProTech showcase the label industry’s expertise in product authentication FINAT, Europe’s international industry association for self-adhesive labels, is active in promoting the achievements of its members, many of whom are label converters, through its annual label competition, whose winning entries go forward for judging in the prestigious World Label Awards. Both competitions demonstrate the versatility, flexibility, and technical skills that print on to self-adhesive labelstock can deliver. One area where selfadhesive labels have, in recent years, proved particularly adept is in the creation of security labels to help brand owners to provide authentication data for their products, and foil the perpetrators of today’s huge global business in counterfeit goods and ‘grey market’ trading.

The world’s biggest brand Global sales of fake goods are now estimated at $650bn per annum, making ‘counterfeit’ the world’s biggest brand. As well as threatening the welfare of purchasers, fake goods negatively affect customer brand loyalty and, of course, the brand owner’s profitability.

A winning example A fine example of an effective security logistics label from Schreiner Group’s ProTech division has been honoured in the 2013 World Label Awards competition.

Proclaimed the winner in the technical category covering combination line print, the Schreiner security logistics label features a complex package of overt, covert, and digital security features. It demonstrates ‘best practice’ in leading-edge layered security solutions for high-value and sensitive goods -- in this case, critical OEM automotive spare parts – and it has already found commercial success for authenticating BMW spares.

Why use a label? Labels are the preferred carrier of security features of all kinds, since they provide an accessible substrate which may be checked for authenticity in a number of ways. With self-adhesive labels in particular, the opportunities to build covert security features into or under the label face, or in the adhesive, are diverse.

Three levels of security The three major areas of focus are the provision of devices for visual authentication (with the naked eye, or with a scanner of some kind); secure tracking systems (creating a continuum through the supply and distribution chain); and anti-counterfeiting technologies – often bespoke -- that are difficult, or impossible, to replicate. Such devices may be overt or covert, to provide the broadest possible umbrella of protection for everything from

ethical pharmaceuticals to legal documents, designer handbags, automotive parts, prepared foods and their ingredients, toys, and computer software. They can involve the use of the label substrate itself (eg with security watermarks), inks and coatings, Data Matrix codes, holography, and even chemical taggants and microtaggants -- including DNA -- which are detectable only with dedicated specialist scanners.

The key to success in the real world The Schreiner ProTech security logistic label’s specification brings together a complex cocktail of such features – some of which require professional authentication, and all of which need brand owner involvement in developing and using their company’s own security labeling system. As Thomas Völcker, Director, Business Development and Marketing at Schreiner ProSecure, explains: ‘Security is not just a matter of technology today. It’s a matter of educating the people who have to authenticate the product.’

Visible tamper evidence Such education will begin with checking entry-level packaging features like security seals, which will readily provide tamper evidence without the use of any tools except the naked eye.

Covert features At the second level of security, covert features are added to the Schreiner security

logistics label via the printing process, including two- and three-dimensional demetallized holographic stripes which produce different (and identifiable) optical effects when they are viewed from different angles. Security inks deliver additional features. Thermochromic inks, which change colour at different temperatures, fade to show a ‘genuine’ message when the labelled pack is at body temperature. UV luminescent inks produce a hidden text line and other marks when viewed under a black light. Additionally, a high-resolution random pattern, printed from an extra-high resolution digital master, is printed on the label to enable authenticators to detect label copying. Anyone copying the pattern illegally will achieve less precision and technical detail in the image, since it is being copied from previous printed matter and not from the digital master. (It will in fact be slightly blurred). A simple scan with a handheld device or even a smartphone and will uncover this blurring and identify the fake.

Track-and-trace functionality Finally, a unique track-and-trace security product batch code is added to verify the integrity of the logistics chain. As with all advanced authentication labelling solutions, customer-specific features can be added to order – and Schreiner ProSecure offers many additional options. Foiling the fraudsters is now a major concern on high-value goods such as automotive spares, electronics, pharmaceuticals, and on wines and spirits.

Multi-layer security labels from FINAT member companies such as Schreiner ProTech are contributing significantly to reducing the damage for both purchasers and brand owners.

Sidebar Schreiner Group were also victorious in the Innovation category in the 2013 FINAT Label Competition with their Electric Conductive Films – produced using advanced printing and diecutting techniques, and used in electrical and electronic applications such as membrane touch switches and other conductive functions.

Schreiner Group The Schreiner Group, based in

Its ability to offer B2 and larger format print is another advantage of the Xeikon 3000 Series presses. Specifically the Xeikon 3050 and Xeikon 3500 are tuned to the production of high quality short runs of folding cartons for a wide variety of industries.”

Extending the colour gamut The enhanced Folding Carton Suite now offers a basic press configuration where the print stations are equipped with orange toner, in combination with CMYK. The extended colour gamut achieved with this configuration ensures the accurate production of a wider range of brand colours. Optional the orange toner can be replaced with other colours such as red, blue or green when the work of the print provider would rather require a colour gamut in that area. “The new configuration with orange toner is the result of Xeikon’s listening to and answering the needs of today’s brand owners and packaging converters,” comments Weymans. “With orange toner, we ensure the best possible match for the broadest array of

brand colours.” Also included in the Folding Carton Suite is the cloud-based Xeikon Color Control to make colour management even easier.

One-pass digital printing and digital varnishing An alternative press configuration includes a digital spot varnish station, equipped with Durable Clear Toner. The Durable Clear Toner applies in-line spot varnish to make the folding box scuff and scratch resistant, a standard requirement with folding carton production. Having printing and varnishing done one-pass, on one press, saves time and space in the plant, and also eliminates the need for additional investments in separate varnishing stations. Weymans adds: “Durable Clear Toner supports greater diversification with one compact solution for inline production of unique cartons with the possibility for each one to be different. It is the perfect solution for small to mediumsized folding carton printers that are mostly serving local markets.” In addition, Xeikon QA-I toners which are used for all label and packaging applications, score well in terms of lightfastness and comply with FDA guidelines for indirect food contact and direct contact with dry food substances that contain no surface oil or fat.

Stand-out technologies The Folding Carton Suite also features a unique fuser drum to enable the production of smooth and consistent print on uneven and textured media, especially recycled board stock ranging from GC board to GC, GT and GZ grades. The Alpine 516 fuser drum has a flexible outer layer as opposed to a standard hard drum surface which can result in an uneven gloss level on textured materials. It is offered as an option for the two 516 mm wide printing presses in the Xeikon 3000 Series, the entry level Xeikon 3050 and high speed Xeikon 3500, and existing installations can be field upgraded to benefit from this exclusive Xeikon capability. In order to increase the lifecycle of parts a simple-to-activate web cleaning system has now also been included in the Folding Carton Suite, lowering the overall cost of production.

REVO Team drives Digital Flexo revolution REVO Digital Flexo Revolution is a Project Team of technology leaders in the flexo industry, which are sharing the objective to digitalize the flexographic process, make it consistent and even more cost effective, to strengthen the overall Flexo business proposition in the Labels and Packaging industry. UV Flexo due to its high quality and consistency is the preferred REVO printing technology. Extended colour gamut/seven colours separation is the preferred prepress technology: 7 fixed colours (CMYK + Orange, Green, Violet or Reflex Blue) printed on top of each other, as very fine vignettes, are able to reproduce 90-95% of the PMS colour palette. Next generation rollers provide extreme ink transfer consistency due to the open slalom scientifically designed surface. Digital Automation on the press takes the full advantage of not needing to change anilox and ink to match PMS colours: print and die-cutting cylinders are changed automatically without operator, and also the press runs “digitally” without operator. A list of substrates is provided for immediate production under REVO standards. A top quality converter tests in real production and improves all the new innovations brought in by the cooperation of the REVO Team Members. REVO Members cooperate, innovate and share together technologies to define “offthe-shelf” protocols, hardware and software, immediately available to converters, who want to start producing in a Digital Flexo environment, without extra costs. A top-

quality converter of Labels and Packaging is part of the REVO Team to test and validate the REVO standards on behalf of future REVO Converters. REVO Digital Flexo Standards will be available to the entire flexo industry 6 months after the official presentation of the REVO Project. REVO Partners agree to promote an “industry move” of flexo towards the full digitalization of the process, and agree to share at a later stage all the standards and the protocols defined for the best performance of the REVO Digital Flexo Revolution. The REVO Project standards will be open to all the flexographic industry players, who are willing to share the REVO Digital Flexo objectives. REVO Team Members suggest the following list of main advantages for companies joining the REVO Digital Flexo Revolution. Cost reduction: less substrate, less inks, less time are wasted for colour matching in the press. 90-95% of PMS palette is reproduced with 7 fixed colours in the press. Less ink is needed to print solid colours as only vignettes are used to reproduce heavy solids. Less substrate is wasted during set-up in the press due to Digital Automation and more up-time of the press is achieved due to down-time reduction for colour matching, print and die-cutting cylinders change, press set-up, press inconsistency during production. Consistency: most variables are digitalized during the whole “from pre-press to print”

chain. PMS inks are substituted by 7 fixed colours, operators skills are not required for colour matching. UV flexo inks deliver consistent ink behaviour in the press. Anilox rollers and inks are optimized for consistent performances. Digital Automation on press greatly reduces the variables caused by operator’s skills. Quality: 7 colours separation-extended colour gamut provide vibrant effects on pictures, more natural and realistic images. 80 lines per cm screen count become standard, taking flexo to a higher print quality level. Digital flexibility: the same file can be printed on a Digital or a Digital Flexo press, with similar quality and costs. With extremely limited wastes and set-up times on the press, production flow can be similar to a Digital press, with frequent job changes, job interruptions, high flexibility in jobs planning. Graphic flexibility: a single job can show a virtually unlimited number of PMS colours, without additional print stations: 7 print stations are sufficient. 2 or more jobs can be interlocked, for short-runs production needs, on the same web, even if with several and different PMS colours. Still, 7 colours are sufficient. A REVO Open House, at GIDUE premises in Florence from 10th To 12th of June 2014 , will introduce the REVO Project to the Labels and Packaging market. Live demonstrations of the full REVO process will be performed, with the participation of all the REVO Team Members.
