Heidelberg Speedmaster XL 75 Anicolor Now also available as a perfecting press with UV technology

Visitors to the Heidelberg Info Days “Profitable and efficient production of short runs” at the WieslochWalldorf site enjoyed not one, but two world premieres. Held at the beginning of March, the event showcased an eight-colour Speedmaster XL 75 Anicolor perfector and a five-colour Speedmaster XL 75 Anicolor with coating unit and UV technology. In doing so, Heidelberg demonstrated two further configuration levels of its Anicolor technology for the cost-effective production of short runs. The Speedmaster SX 52 Anicolor has been available as a perfecting press since 2008 and as a UV press since 2010. The Speedmaster XL 75 Anicolor celebrated its premiere at drupa 2012 and, since then, has proved its worth to commercial and, in particular, packaging printers. In small and medium formats, the zoneless Anicolor technology impresses with rapid inking-up that produces saleable sheets from the 20th print sheet onward. Users say it reduces waste by up to 90 percent and supports very short make-ready times.

Anicolor as a long perfecting press – extremely flexible Customers and interested parties are invited to participate in application trials on the Speedmaster XL 75 -5+L with Anicolor and UV in Hall 6 at Wiesloch-Walldorf.

The perfecting technology is the most productive process for printing jobs on both sides. Anicolor technology from Heidelberg reduces waste and makeready times. The Speedmaster XL 75 Anicolor perfector now combines both advantages in a single press.

It is available for delivery immediately and the first presses have already been sold. The front and reverse sides are printed in a single pass, which greatly reduces delivery times. Thanks to the modular design of the Speedmaster XL 75 platform, customers can tailor their specific configuration to market requirements and thus acquire an extremely flexible press. The Speedmaster XL 75 Anicolor covers a broad spectrum, from a 4/4 press to a long perfector with coating and drying units. The Speedmaster XL 75 Anicolor is designed for customers in industrialized countries, although the long perfecting presses are predominantly of interest to commercial printers keen to offer their customers a wide range of products. However, the press will also impress packaging printers, as it is ideal for practical applications. If, for example, the inner side has to be printed with a spot colour and, following sheet reversal, the outer side printed with six colours, this presents an interesting challenge for the production of folding cartons. In such scenarios, Anicolor technology can reveal its full benefits with excellent full-area printing. In addition to the Heidelberg Info Days, customers and other interested parties have the opportunity to see a Speedmaster XL 75 Anicolor 8-P in action in a range of presentations and demonstrations in Hall 6 at Wiesloch-Walldorf.

Key Notes : > Anicolor as a long perfecting press – extremely flexible. > Anicolor and UV printing – versatile finishing effects and fast, cost-effective manufacturing. > Anicolor in general – cost-effective production of short runs.

The Speedmaster XL 75-5+L with Anicolor and UV technology impresses with dry sheets in the delivery.

Anicolor and UV printing – versatile finishing effects and fast, cost-effective manufacturing One in every four Speedmaster XL 75 machines from Heidelberg is already supplied as a UV press. Consequently, UV technology is also being transferred to the Speedmaster XL 75 Anicolor. In-house trials are currently taking place with high-profile customers during the test phase at the Wiesloch-Walldorf site. The first deliveries are planned for the end of this year. The target groups here are commercial, packaging, and specialist printers, with the primary markets for UV being in Europe, the United States, and Japan.

range of finishing options, offering printers opportunities to set themselves apart from the competition and provide added value for their customers.

Profitable and efficient production of short runs During the Heidelberg Info Days, visitors gained an overview of which presses can be used to produce even the shortest runs

cost-effectively. The event showcased a comprehensive portfolio, including the Speedmaster SX 52 and XL 75 Anicolor models, and the digital printing systems Linoprint CP and Linoprint CV, which are suitable for new applications such as opaque white, varnish, and, of course, personalized print products. Combining offset technology with the digital printing systems offers immense potential.

UV presses can process absorbent and non-absorbent materials, which arrive in the delivery dry and can be passed to postpress immediately. The combination of Anicolor and UV generates less waste, thus resulting in major cost savings, particularly for print specialists working with expensive materials such as films. Thanks to short makeready times and rapid deliveries, business models like web-to-print are also possible. In addition, UV printing is suitable for a

Heidelberg celebrates major milestone Milestones for integrated logistics network from Heidelberg supporting print shop performance.

Heidelberg is celebrating a major milestone. Its World Logistics Center (WLC) opened at the company’s headquarters in Wiesloch-Walldorf some 15 years ago. This laid the foundation for a globally integrated logistics network that aims to supply customers with service parts and consumables in no more than 24 hours. In addition to the original center in Germany, Heidelberg therefore now operates a further three logistics centers in the strategically important markets of Japan, Hong Kong/China, and the United States. “The service promise of our integrated logistics network supports the performance of our customers across the globe, ensuring high machine uptime and reliable quality,” says Bernhard Steinel, who is in charge of the Systemservice business area at Heidelberg.

Logistics network and preventive service functions complement each other

The company has also reached a further milestone. The one millionth order has just left the Heidelberg hub in Indianapolis in the United States, which opened in 2004 and supplies service parts to the whole of North and South America. Over the past 15 years, the logistics centers have processed a joint total of nearly five million orders and shipped them to customers the world over.

Over 200 qualified support staff use state-of-theart technology to process orders, purchases, and shipments. Heidelberg currently processes up to 1,500 orders each working day at its logistics centers around the globe. Customers receive the parts they order within 24 hours in over 95 percent of cases. At the WLC in Germany alone, Heidelberg keeps around 120,000 different parts in stock.

The global logistics network boosts the impact of the preventive services in the Heidelberg portfolio. For example, when the preventive Remote Service functions eCall and Remote Monitoring detect that parts need to be replaced – long before a machine stoppage occurs – the worldwide logistics network ensures that the correct service part has been delivered by the time the engineer arrives. “Our Remote Service is key to ensuring machine availability for a growing number of customers, but it only really comes into its own in conjunction with our global service network, which is unique in the industry,” stresses Steinel.

Bobst Open House Showcases high-speed F&K 20SIX CS wide-web press. On February 25 and 26, Bobst Bielefeld, Germany, held an open house with its focus on high speed and wide web width flexo printing. Following the approach taken at BOBST’s highly successful open house last October, the event was divided into a seminar session in the morning and a print demonstration in the afternoon. Visitors from fifteen countries around the world attended the event and got an update on the latest flexo printing and process related developments. The print demonstration utilized the flagship of the F&K 20SIX series of CI flexo presses, a “CS” model featuring a print width of 1’650 mm (65’’), a repeat of 1’200 mm (47.2’’), and a speed of 600 m/min (1’970 ft/min). The extensive range of equipment onboard the press included F&K smartGPS, shaftless winders, a BOBST three-chip camera, a 100% inspection system, a special slitting device, and an auxiliary system for sleeve and cylinder handling. During the demonstration, two five-colour jobs were run at 600 m/min, i.e. the maximum mechanical speed of the model showcased. The changeover of the print sleeves in between the two jobs was performed using the cylinder handling system, which gave visitors an idea of its fast and user-friendly handling of even large format printing hardware. For impression and register set-up, F&K smartGPS, BOBST’s unique off-press technology was used, so visitors witnessed a complete changeover – from the end of the first five-colour job to saleable quality of the subsequent job – in less than 15 minutes.

During the seminar session, Bill Duckham and Hermann Koch, Bobst Bielefeld Sales Directors, spoke about specific challenges on a press designed for high speed and wide width applications, and about technical solutions integrated into the F&K 20SIX to meet these challenges. Visitors heard that, most importantly, the specific technologies and measures that ensure consistently superior print quality throughout the process are related to: mechanical rigidity of cylinders and bearings; high precision impression adjustment; ink transfer from the ink chamber to the substrate; and to guaranteed drying of ink on the substrate. Michael Schmidt from Siegwerk Druckfarben highlighted the topic of high speed printing from the perspective of an ink manufacturer, presenting practical examples, limitations, and potential for optimization. The second part of the seminar session was dedicated to plastic film as a packaging substrate. In his speech about the latest developments in extrusion, Sascha Skora,

from Reifenhäuser Blown Film, presented typical problems converters are faced with - from pellet quality to reel/winding quality of the film material. Mr. Skora also updated the visitors on the latest quality inspection systems for ensuring superior film quality throughout the extrusion process. Last but not least, Dr. Carolin Struller, from Bobst Manchester, illustrated the company’s indepth research on AlOx clear coating, from the way it is produced and its performance on various filmic substrates, through to its barrier retention with subsequent processes of printing and converting. AlOx coating is especially suitable for packaging where product visibility is required, including baked goods and microwaveable food.

Second drupa Global Trends report International printing sector looks to the future with surprising optimism Initial results from the second “drupa Global Trends” report are showing sustained recovery from the recession with some surprising insights and positive feedback. The full report designed to highlight economic and operational trends in the worldwide print sector is available at the end of March. The results are all the more interesting as the survey itself, conducted in October 2014, was largely identical to the first “drupa Global Trends” report from February 2014. In addition this year a full survey was conducted amongst industry suppliers for the first time, ensuring a balanced picture of the global print market. Developments and important key data from the worldwide print sector – such as financial conditions, business climate, investment plans and technologies used are given in detail and trends revealed. Werner Matthias Dornscheidt, Chairman of the Messe Düsseldorf Management Board summarises the key results of the study. “The generally upbeat picture reported by the expert panel surprised us,” says Dornscheidt. “Both the print service providers and the interna-tional supplier industry gave a positive evaluation of the economic situation of their own companies as at October 2014. Even more surprising, however, was that the print and supplier industry is heading into 2015 with a very positive outlook.”

The question ‘How do you see the outlook for the coming twelve months?’ was answered by 48 percent of service providers sur-veyed with expectations of an improvement in their companies’ economic situation, and only seven percent with a decline. The results from the worldwide supplier industry were similarly positive: 51 percent forecast an improvement, and only eight percent a decline. On the other hand, the results from individual performance measures surveyed show a much more mixed picture: 1.

2.

Sales for print service providers continue to rise – but are less pronounced. 39 percent of print service providers report an increase, whereas 22 percent show a drop in sales. This positive balance of 17 percent is well below the positive net balance of 27 percent from the first survey. The margins for print service providers continue to fall. Almost half (43 percent) of the print service providers sur-veyed report falling margins, while just 16 percent succeeded in increasing margins. Positive exceptions here are the markets of North America and the Middle East, where 29 and 28 percent reported increased margins.

Digital print is growing fast but is still a small percentage of turnover for most printers. As quickly as the share of digital printing in the overall print technology mix continues to rise, most turnover continues to be generated from traditional print. Only ten percent of the print service providers surveyed achieved more than 25 percent of their 2014 sales in digital printing (2013: 8 percent). Print service providers are not turning to services outside the print sector. Often recommended as a new business area – but not yet realised in practice: Just 27 percent of the print providers surveyed achieved more than ten percent of their sales with services outside the print sector (e.g. asset management for customers, updating databases, etc.).

Drawing an initial conclusion from the second “drupa Global Trends” report, those surveyed feel pretty positive – even if some measures are still showing negative trends. This general optimism is supported by the investment plans cited both by print service providers and supplier firms. After all, only a forwardlooking development strategy ensures a competitive edge and thus the future of the company. More than 1100 international decisionmakers from the print industry and their suppliers responded to the comprehensive survey in October 2014. KBA at Print China: Print Solutions for All LED sheetfed offset, digital, flexo and glass container printing, inkjet coding and more At the Print China fair in Guangdong from 7th to 12th April, the KBA Group will be presenting a broad cross-section of its uniquely comprehensive product range for practically all print applications on an exhibition stand measuring over 1,000 m2. Under the banner “Print Solutions for All”, KBA will also be revealing the secrets of a new medium-format press which is expected to capture users’ hearts not only on the Chinese market. The equipment features and performance of the new press have been positioned between the proven Rapida 105 and the high-end Rapida 106 models; the final unveiling is to be celebrated at the KBA manufacturing facility in Radebeul in June. Live production demonstrations at the fair will be showing off the latest extended capabilities of the Rapida 105 press, an absolute favourite among Chinese commercial and packaging printers, which was premiered in Shanghai at the end of 2011. KBA has always played a pioneering role in innovations for the sheetfed offset market. And that is currently the case yet again with the future-oriented LED-UV technology. KBA is presently the only manufacturer able to supply sheetfed offset presses with LED-UV dryers from B2 through to large formats, and can already point to a growing list of onstream installations, including long Rapida 106 presses for full-colour 4/4 perfecting. Taking up the slogan “Dry for Profit”, the user benefits of LED drying are to be illustrated

The core message from KBA China at Print China 2015 is “sprinting for profit”

through the example of a Rapida 75. Key arguments in favour of the environment-friendly LED process, alongside the enormous energy savings compared to conventional processes, are above all the elimination of heat input into the substrate, the outstanding colour brilliance and the possibilities for immediate further processing of the print products.

“Quality for Profit” and “Network for Profit” Further sheetfed offset topics – spotlighted by the slogans “Quality for Profit” and “Net-work for Profit” – are systems for inline and online quality control, and a new MIS CIP4 workflow solution named Complete Druck.X, which will also be available in the Chinese language. The offers are rounded off with a range of consumables from the PressConsum series. By way of a comprehensive selection of print

samples, fair visitors can at the same time explore the capabilities of the new, flexibly scalable KBA RotaJET L platform for high-volume inkjet printing with web widths from 895 to 1,300 mm, as well as modern web presses for the printing of flexible packaging from KBAFlexotecnica, inkjet coding systems from KBA-Metronic, which are in the meantime also manufactured locally in China, screen and digital printing systems from KBA-Kammann for the industrial decoration of premium glass containers, a segment which is today especially widespread in China but in most cases still a manual process, and technical solutions from KBA-MePrint for the highquality printing of tubes, labels and films. For the first time, the KBA Group will also be exhibiting a folding carton gluer, the Rapida FCG 110. China has been one of the most important markets for KBA for a number of years. Around 20 per cent of all sheetfed offset presses manufactured in Radebeul – from the Rapida 75 to the Rapida 164 – are in use in Chinese print companies. Leading Chinese newspapers are printed on KBA press lines, as are metal sheets for drinks cans and many more products besides. KBA China is known for its intensive customer care and excellent service, and supports the users of KBA presses in every way possible in their strivings for economic success. Appropriately, the core message from KBA China at Print China is “KBA: sprinting for profit”.

Times of India invests in Q.I. Press Controls’ mRC-3D India’s largest media conglomerate the Times of India has opted for Q.I. Press Controls’ press automation solution. The Times Group is the largest publishing company in India and South-Asia. With a turnover exceeding a billion dollars, the group has the support of over 25,000 advertisers, 11,000 employees and an audience spanning across all continents. The Group has decided to invest in Q.I. Press Controls’ mRC-3D. With its flagship Bennet, Coleman and Company Limited (BCCL) and its subsidiaries, the Times of India is present in every existing media platform – newspapers, magazines, books, TV, radio, internet, music, movies and more. It’s the largest publishing company with regard to newspaper circulation in India: 13 newspapers, 18 magazines, 11 publishing centres, 26 printing centres.

With the mRC-3D, costs will significantly reduce over different aspects of the printing process. Investing in the mRC-3D is much more than just having a register system.

Key Notes : > The Time Group decides to invest in Q.I. Press Controls’ latest automatic registration solution mRC-3C. > The Automatic Ink Mist Shield (AIMS) reduces the pollution of the lens by automatically replacing a shield that is placed in front of the camera. > The investment is for their Manroland GEOMAN double width newspaper press at its Ghaziabad location.

The Times of India has made a decision to invest in Q.I. Press Controls’ latest automatic registration solution mRC-3D. The mRC-3D comes with dual CMOS optical technology and their latest innovation Automatic Ink Mist Shield (AIMS). AIMS reduces the pollution of the lens by automatically replacing a shield that is placed in front of the camera. The Times of India has also invested in waste gate control and Intelligent Quality Management (IQM) for quality management reporting. The investment is for their Manroland GEOMAN double width newspaper press at its Ghaziabad location– 6 tower and 1 folder (twin). The order consists of 12 motorised mRC-3D cameras for register control and 12 motorised mRC-3D cameras for cut-off control. Additionally each folder will be equipped with waste gate control. With these features the Times of India will ensure the continuation of monitoring and tracking for good and consistent print quality delivered to his end user. The Times of India

achieved faster printing, considerable increase in waste savings and is now able to keep track of giving consistent quality to their customer base. The Times of India considered that the concept being offered by Q.I. Press Controls is of great value to the company: The double-sensor technology not only doubles the possibilities but can also cope more effectively with depth; which is the reason for the 3D designation for mRC’s latest colour register camera. This concept proves its great added value particularly well in case of unsteady paper web routings and surfaces for achieving consistent quality. As The Times of India is known in India for its good print quality, the order for the supply of Q.I. Press Controls’ basic module of IQM system and the option of waste gate control was a logical. As a market leader, The Times of India always follow new developments in the market very closely for improving efficiency of print operation. The organisation knows Q.I. Press Controls India well for its strong presence in the Indian market for their closed loop solutions for the web offset market. The investment ensures the Times of India a top position in quality printing in the Indian market. The print quality is excellent and consistent so it matches the aspirations of The Times of India Group. Mr. Vijay Pandya, Managing Director of Q.I. Press Controls India states: “We are very enthusiastic about this order. The order not only proves the growing importance of innovation for automatic registration solutions in the newspaper industry, it is also very important for Q.I. Press Controls. From now on, our name will be linked to one of the most leading and well-known quality printing newspaper group in India.” Mr. Pandya shows by this statement that he is content and has confidence that Q.I. Press Controls will stay in its leading position thanks to the collaboration with the Times of India. The Installation is of great importance for The Times of India as well. The organisation states that Q.I. Press Controls created awareness of saving opportunities like print wastage and awareness of consistent quality during print run. With the mRC-3D, costs will significantly reduce over different aspects of the printing process. Investing in the mRC-3D is much more than just having a register system.

Q.I. Press Controls convinces Mayr Miesbach GmbH of benefits mRC-3D and IDS-3D Mayr Miesbach has plumped for a Q.I. Press Controls’ system after purchasing a KBA heatset printing press. Mayr Miesbach was, after some persuasive talking, won over by the advantages of the mRC-3D and the new IDS-3D. These new systems from Q.I. Press Controls enable Mayr Miesbach to guarantee high standards of quality and reduce waste. “From a technological point of view, these systems are helping us to forge ahead. We are now able to use of state-of-the-art technology,” according to Erwin Erler, print manager at Mayr Miesbach GmbH. Mayr Miesbach Druckerei und Verlag is a printing and publishing business based in Miesbach, Germany and sees its role as guiding the client through all stages of the printing process. Whether this has to do with design and lay-out or the printing process itself, the company provides a customised service at each step. Quality and the environment represent important priorities: Mayr Miesbach aims to provide the very best in quality without making any concessions to the environment. The organisation is in

possession of various labels, certificates and accreditations which underline its commitment to sustainability and to meeting strict quality requirements. According to the Environment certificate for climate initiatives, Mayr Miesbach’s production processes are carbon-neutral, it has the EU Ecolabel for sustainability and the EINSER – AZUBI accreditation for the training of its personnel, just to mention a few. When he purchased the KBA C217 press, Mayr Miesbach had among others the environment and quality in focus. The organisation fell into conversation with Arslan Miftachoglu, managing director of Q.I. Press Controls Germany, about an automated system for the printing press. Miftachoglu was able to convince Erler that the new technologies of Q.I. Press Controls would provide Mayr Miesbach with additional benefits. “Taking into account the environment and general quality, opting for the mRC-3D and the IDS-3D was the most logical decision to make,” explains Miftachoglu. “In Mayr Miesbach’s case these systems will ensure a uniform standard of high quality and a marked reduction in waste and ink consumption.” The order placed with Q.I. Press Controls is for a fully automated solution consisting of 2 mRC-3D colour register cameras with AIMS and anti-embossing, 3 mRC-3D cut-off register cameras with AIMS, sidelay

and remote control and 2 IDS-3D colour control cameras with RAS. The system will be installed on the aforementioned KBA C217 commercial printing press with 5 printing units and 1 folder. Erler adds: “This gives us an improved start-up period, lower production costs, more effective and exacter quality control and a faster cut-off control.” In this way, he believes, the system is able create an easy-to-use, reliable and low-maintenance printing press for Mayr Miesbach. Miftachoglu goes on to explain that the order is also down to a good working partnership with KBA. It was thanks to them that he found out that Mayr Miesbach was looking to purchase the press. Mayr Miesbach expects that the planning for the start-up period will be smooth and professional. “Even after the start-up period,” he elaborates, “we want a our electricians to undergo a thorough introduction to the sytems and for our operators to get proper training. We expect that Q.I. Press Controls will be able to step in at a moment’s notice if there are any sudden problems, remotely or otherwise.” Miftachoglu expects a fruitful partnership with the company: “We will continue to offer an excellent service and I hope that customers like Mayr Miesbach in Germany will also be able to show that automatic solutions from Q.I. Press Controls can suit any kind of organisation.”

First British user of Linoprint CV Digital Printing System British printing company Diguru committed to growth with digital printing systems from Heidelberg

Diguru is a commercial printing company based in Hampshire in the United Kingdom and the first British user of the new Linoprint CV digital printing system from Heidelberg. It specializes in business with advertising agencies and end users and is committed to producing high-quality print products as sustainably as possible. The company has only been on the market since 2010 and currently has a workforce of nine. Since it was founded, Diguru has succeeded in increasing its sales from £400,000 to some £1 million, in particular thanks to the growth in digital printing operations.

“Ultimately, there were three reasons for choosing the Linoprint CV – its high productivity, the flexibility offered by a fifth color either to print white or apply a coating, and the excellent price-performance ratio.” - Richard Harwood, MD Diguru

To satisfy increasing demand and respond to the trend towards higher-quality digital print products, Diguru decided on the Linoprint CV from Heidelberg, which has only recently been launched. “Ultimately, there were three reasons for choosing the Linoprint CV – its high productivity, the flexibility offered by a fifth color either to print white or apply a coating, and the excellent price-performance ratio,” says Diguru’s managing director Richard Harwood in explaining his investment decision. Diguru intends to use the new system’s surface finishing options above all to boost its business with advertising agencies. The company is gearing all its efforts towards further growth and is planning other additions to the portfolio, such as 3D printing.

Linoprint CV and Linoprint CP – greater flexibility thanks to new functions for higher productivity when printing short and/or personalized runs Heidelberg launched the new Linoprint CV and Linoprint CP digital printing systems at the end of 2014 to replace the Linoprint C 751 and Linoprint C 901 models, around 500 of which had been installed worldwide up to that point. With a printing speed of 90 pages per minute, high quality standards, and comprehensive functions, the new Linoprint CV sets new standards in its performance class. The system will be able to print with five colors, making it unique in its segment. Besides the four primary colors, the system also offers white as an additional color for higher opacity or, alternatively, a coating with high-gloss properties. Users can choose from a huge variety of substrates, ranging from textured and colored papers to synthetic films and highly coated materials. The new Linoprint CP produces advertising and presentation materials at a printing speed of 130 pages per minute, as well as high-quality brochures, personalized print products, and professionally bound books. The inline finishing units offer a whole host of solutions – from high-capacity stacking,

perforating, and folding all the way through to leaflets and books with adhesive binding. The Linoprint CP can also be used to process a range of materials, some of which can be quite challenging, such as textured papers and plastics. Both presses have the ability to produce a sheet size of 700mm x 330mm for A4 landscape and six page A4 printing.

The Prinect digital front end newly developed by Heidelberg supports the seamless integration of both new digital printing systems into the overall workflow of a print shop. This means that all print jobs can be centrally managed in one workflow system, irrespective of the production process selected.

“Short runs of increasingly high quality and additional surface finishes are all the rage. Print shops need to be able to provide their customers with the solutions they need while also turning a profit. Our new Linoprint systems offer users exceptional flexibility, productivity, and quality,” says Jason Oliver, Head of Digital Printing at Heidelberg.

Xerox Color 800i / 1000i Presses Xerox increases automation, introduces gold and silver metallic inks on new presses Printers can create and produce more profitable jobs with outstanding image accuracy and vibrant colours with Xerox’s newest digital color devices – the Versant 80 Press and the Color 800i/1000i Presses. For print-for-pay and in-plants, the Versant 80 combines new features and functionality to produce high-end applications faster on more media types. The Color 800i/1000i Presses now offer true Pantone metallic gold or silver specialty dry inks – giving printers a creative, competitive advantage. With increased automation both devices keep print environments at peak performance levels.

Versant 80 Press The Versant 80 provides production press capabilities with walk-up simplicity, offsetquality performance and automated features that remove the guesswork out of optimizing image quality, colour and registration. Printing at 80 pages-per-minute (ppm), the device delivers ultra HD, 10-bit image quality at 2400 x 2400 dpi and can handle a variety of media types with a compact Belt Fuser system and Xerox’s EA Low Melt Dry Ink. Printers looking for extra productivity can add an optional Performance Package, which maintains top speeds of 80 ppm on all stocks up to 350 gsm along with an in-line spectrophotometer for increased colour automation. “We were overwhelmed with how well the Versant 80 matches Pantone Matching System colours. Prior to this press, we had to manipulate the colour, but with the Versant 80 we just select a spot colour and it hits it right on – the first time,” said Betsy Allen, owner, Cortland Press & Carbon Copies. The Versant 80 comes with a choice of two servers: the Xerox EX-i 80 Print Server Powered by Fiery or the Xerox EX 80 Print Server Powered by Fiery. Printers can easily produce variable data-driven personalized communications with the addition of XMPie uDirect Classic Pro software.

Color 800/1000 Presses have helped providers expand their digital businesses by producing full-colour applications with vivid images on a wide range of paper stocks.

“The inks are very compelling – they accent pieces with a dramatic, striking impact that’s both impressive and memorable,” said Greg Wallace, president, Harvard Pinnacle Group.

The latest devices, the Xerox Color 800i/1000i Presses, include an optional Specialty Dry Ink Station that enhances documents with metallic gold or silver dry inks or applies spot or flood creative effects with clear dry ink. Xerox is the first in the industry to offer silver dry ink at rated speed.

Among the devices’ productivity enhancements is a full-width array to automate critical press functions, time to production operational improvements and a new Xerox EX-P 1000i Print Server Powered by Fiery.

With the presses, printers can migrate lucrative foil stamping applications, such as invitations, certificates and business cards, to short-run, high-value digital production. Multipass printing with clear ink adds an extra textural/dimensional feel and the “pop” of the silver and gold inks – a Must See ‘Em award winner at Graph Expo 2014 – produces attention-grabbing effects on a wide range of applications.

The Versant 80 Press and the Color 800i/1000i Presses are available for install in April. The Versant 80 optional Performance Package and the optional upgrades for current Color 800/1000 customers will be available in the second quarter. On April 23, Xerox will host a Google+ Hangout titled “Ask the Experts: Looking Beyond Dots Per Inch with the Xerox Versant 80 Press.” Jim Hamilton, group director, InfoTrends, will be joined by two customers to explore the important role of print resolution.

America,” said Paul Rauscher, CEO of EMT. “Both EMT and MPS focus on building robust and easy to operate high-end machinery for the label and packaging industry. I see this as a perfect fit for both companies, and ultimately our customers. We both focus on high-quality customer solutions and we want to help companies benefit fully from technology. Strategic partnership EMT and MPS

MPS and EMT will be kicking off the strategic partnership with a launching event at EMT International on April 28. The open house will include live demonstrations of MPS’ flagship printing press, the EF. The EF printing press is an automated multisubstrate flexo press that offers a choice of either plate rolls or print sleeves, providing the ultimate in flexibility. The EF features both UV and hot-air drying technologies. Furthermore, its web transportation system allows users to print on a variety of substrates including thin film, paper, cartonboard, shrink sleeves, in-mold, tube laminate and flexible packaging. The EF features MPS’ exclusive Crisp.Dot and iControl technologies. Crisp. Dot uses a rubber-coated counter-pressure roller to exert equalized pressure resulting in minimal dot gain. The result is that the print dot retains its round shape, the ink coverage is solid and small fonts are sharper. The iControl management and service operator/ machine interface minimizes operator errors. Simple, intuitive and stress-free to operate, this technology enables the operator to choose and run individual functions via a touch screen and button, greatly simplifying machine control and operation.

Bobst Group nearly doubles net result Bobst Group, the Swiss-based worldwide supplier of equipment and services to the packaging industry, achieved consolidated sales of CHF 1.3 billion in 2014, a marginal decrease of CHF 54 million, or 4.0%, compared to 2013. The operating result (EBIT) reached CHF 81.7 million (CHF 60.3 million in 2013) and the net result reached CHF 53.0 million (CHF 27.7 million in 2013). These significant improvements were achieved due to the first full-year impact of Group transformation measures, and to good utilization of the Group’s industrial capacities, which have been adapted to demand. The strong operating result (EBIT), together with a further reduction in net working capital, resulted in a significant cash inflow from operating activities of CHF 129.4 million (CHF 83.2 million in 2013). This enabled the Group to further reduce net debt from CHF 109.0 million in 2013 to CHF 17.7 million in 2014. The return on capital employed (ROCE) reached 12.6% compared to 8.6% in 2013. The Board of Directors proposes to the Annual General Meeting of Shareholders the payment of a dividend of CHF 1.25 per share (CHF 0.75 in 2013).

March 2015

In 2015 the Group expects to achieve an operating result (EBIT) margin higher than 5% and a net result margin higher than 3%, at current exchange rates. The Group started 2014 with a slightly lower backlog of orders than the year before. Month-by-month, order entries were uneven, but with bookings at good levels for the last months of the year. For the full year 2014, consolidated sales decreased by CHF 54 million to CHF 1.3 billion. Sales of Sheet-fed products remained stable compared to the previous year, at CHF 639 million. Demand for products for the corrugated equipment industry was strong and this compensated for weaker demand for products in the folding carton industry. Sales of Web-fed products decreased by 15.8%, achieving CHF 283 million for the year 2014. This reduction was mainly due to lower demand for special machines and complex lines. Sales of Services and spare parts remained stable compared to the previous year at CHF 377 million. Both operating result (up 35% to CHF 81.7 million) and net result (up 91% to CHF 53.0

million), showed significant improvements. In 2015, Bobst Group will focus its strategy on innovation and product launches. The Group will dedicate core resources and energy to keeping its technological lead and enhancing customer satisfaction – which is one of the Group’s main priorities. Moreover the Group will continue the implementation of measures to mitigate significantly the impact of the rise of the Swiss franc. A Promising Future for Packaging and Printing Li Hua, Yang Lizhen, Chen Qiang The ongoing prosperity of commodity economy has brought higher requirements for the packing and printing products in the market. Merchants and customers are in the pursuit of products with elegant appearance, diversified functions and personalized designs. Therefore, packaging and printing becomes the most potential growth point in the printing industry, and so attracts great attention from the industry. In the future, the technology of packaging and printing will, to the greatest extent, reflect the modern concept of packaging design, and visualize the information and function of the products. Under the modern concept, elements including technology, humanities, environmental protection, and market demands blend with the others such as experience, consumers’ mentality, and corporate images. These combinations will be ultimately reflected in the products’ packages. For example, the combination of emerging information-hiding technology and traditional encryption technology digitizes the processes of quality control, production inquiry, and production safety. The utilization of new packaging material and technology leads to economical and environment-friendly packaging, with paper in replacement of plastics, glass, and metal. The blending of anti-counterfeiting packaging technology with advanced printing technology and local humanities not only symbolizes the cultural inheritance, but also prevents the replication and counterfeit, which contributes to the marketing, the establishment of corporate brand, and the protection of consumers’ legitimate rights and interests. Moreover, the emergence of three- dimensional (3D) printer provides better prospects for nano-functional printing and electronic component packaging and printing technology. At present, with the development of electronic media and smart materials, smart packaging has been utilized largely in the pre-press processing of information and post-press finishing, creating a bright future for packaging and printing industry. The upgrading of relevant hardware technology also manifests the development of packaging and printing technology. The utilization of high-tech (e.g., smart technology

46

and processing, sensor technology, technology of magnetic materials and new fiber materials) in packaging machinery contributes to the electromechanical integration, intelligence, and automation with high production speed, efficiency and quality, and also guarantees the personalization and specialization of the producing process. In addition, the developmental trends of the integration of packaging and printing processes, as well as the utilization of pollution-free and green packaging materials become more obvious. The developments of new functional packaging materials and fabrication technology also will gain momentum. Recently, market demand for functional packaging and printing products has been increasing. Many companies and R&D centers, both at home and abroad, dedicate themselves to the R&D of new functional packaging materials and technology, such as new high-barrier film, the most prominent achievement. Currently, the most commonly used plastic packaging material is PET polyester material (more than 30%). This material has excellent characteristics of being light, stable, easy to carry, and in low cost. The methods commonly used to improve the barrier properties of PET include mixing PET with plastics such as PEN, EVOH, and LCP, combining PET and other thin film materials, adding oxygen scavenger in PET, and using plasma technology in organic thin film surface to deposit Nano-oxide thin film, a method that originates from the late eighties

of last century. At present, some companies and R&D centers have already made significant achievements in this field. For example, the method jointly developed by COCA-COLA, University of Duisburg-Essen, Krones and Leybold systemic company is to coat PET surface with SiOx thin film, which can increase the barrier properties of PET by four times and thus extend the shelf life of food for another six months without affecting the smells of the food. The SiOx barrier thin film developed by the Plasma Physics and Materials Research Center in Beijing Institute of Graphic Communications can enhance the barrier properties of PET by nearly 170 times. In addition, with the rapid development of nanotechnology and materials, the industrialization of nano packaging materials witnesses an optimistic outlook for the industry. The applications of nano materials in packaging papers, inks, plates, adhesives, coatings, and key components of the machine have shown high performances. Relying on market demands, packaging and printing technology will employ the existing technology and high-tech platform to formulate new technological systems which will be characterized by environment-friendly and energy saving packaging and printing technology with high-tech, high performance, high reliability and high capacity.

Roll-to-roll printing of RF antenna and flexible circuit boards based on nanosilver/copper fabrication. Currently, the American company Novacentrix and the Chinese Company Nano Top Electronic Technology Co., Ltd. have already developed the roll-to-roll printing of RF antenna based on nano-silver/ copper conductive ink, which has many advantages including environmentfriendly manufacturing process, material savings and low cost. Printing of touch screen leads and transparent conductive films based on Gravure-offset, nano-imprint, silver nanowire coating technology. Currently, the Japanese company Komori has already begun to sell its Gravureoffset high precision electronic ink printer, which can be used to produce peripheral leads for narrow frame touch screen mobile phones. In addition, the U.S. company Cambrios, Japanese company Nissha Printing, and the Taiwan company TPK utilize the coated printing nano-imprint technology to produce transparent conductive films for the touch screens of mobile phones and other electronic devices. Printing of flexible and foldable displays/ lighting boards, large electronic advertising boards, navigation boards, etc. Currently, Sony, Philips, Samsung

and LG have already presented their flexible and foldable displays and lighting products in the market.

Development Trends of Printed Electronics 1.

2.

A tendency from platform sheetfed printing to modular roll-to-roll printing will be witnessed. Currently, RFID antennas have already employed roll-to-roll screen-printing approach to make continuous and rapid production — from roll-to-roll screen-printing to roll -to-roll inkjet, and to roll-to-roll flexo, and to roll -to-roll gravure, the production speed reaches to approximately 300 m/min. The printing precision is to improve from micron to submicron, and even to nanometer in the near future. With the current printing process, the optimum printing precision is about 20μm. However, highly integrated electronic devices require higher printing precision, particularly the printing precision of submicron or even nanometer. The high precision HR Offset technology developed by Sony has already realized a printing precision of 5μm.

3.

4.

Printing of electronic devices will shift from part-printing to full-printing. Currently, printed electronics technology is gradually becoming mature and with the development of semiconductor ink material, it is possible to produce electronic products with full printing method. South Korea’s Samsung Electronics and Dutch Holster research center have shown the white OLED lighting products made by full roll-to-roll printing. There will be a trend to develop flexible and curved, thin and transparent, scalable and wearable electronic devices in the very near future.

FASTSIGNS brings cutting & routing tasks in-house with Esko Kongsberg V table Business becomes more productive, completes projects faster, and is able to attract more business.

FASTSIGNS of Vancouver has recently invested in a new Esko Kongsberg V finishing table, bringing in-house many of the cutting and routing tasks it once had to subcontract to complete. In doing so, beyond productivity, quality and cost efficiencies, they have been able to attract more business. FASTSIGNS of Vancouver is an independently owned and operated sign, graphics and visual communications company—one of FASTSIGNS’ more than 530 franchises throughout the world. They provide comprehensive visual marketing solutions to customers of all sizes—across all industries—to help them meet their business objectives and increase their business visibility. Paul LeBlanc is the owner of FASTSIGNS. His business grew substantially in the early 2000s and expanded from their original 1,800square foot location to their current 5,400 square foot facility in 2008.Their ten employees operate two roll printers, a flatbed printer, and a thermal transfer printer.

“If I had to make a decision before the Kongsberg V, I would have waited another year. The price let me move sooner.” – Paul LeBlanc

Key Notes : > Subcontracting cutting was increasing with increased time pressures and costs. > Needed a table that could read registration marks from a digital printer; could cut squares or contours—whatever shape—on the printed piece. > Decided to invest in a Kongsberg V table and installed it in 2014; price was a significant factor.

Finding a need to bring cutting and finishing in-house “Producing signs isn’t all about printing. We originally had a saw on our wall and a hand saw we used for cutting on production tables,” recalls LeBlanc.”A lot of the materials took a good amount of muscle to

cut. On some occasions when clients needed a good number of retail signs and shapes, we sent them out to a subcontractor to be cut.” LeBlanc realized that the amount of subcontracting was increasing. “One of our best customers was ordering more and more items that needed cut substrates, and it required us to seek help,” says LeBlanc.”It was challenging for us. The subcontractor’s cost made it difficult for us to make money. Also, it created time pressures for us. We would print the project, ship it across town, wait for the project to be cut, and then ship it back. It took too much time.” The other influencing factor came from LeBlanc’s involvement with FASTSIGNS. “We are part of the FASTSIGNS network and have a number of business friends whom I speak with regularly and meet at our annual convention,” adds LeBlanc.”I had heard that many of these franchisees were reaping real production efficiencies with cutting tables. While we had plenty of resources to do the work manually, I asked a room full of people of similar FASTSIGNS centers if there was a viable business case to invest in a table. The answer was a unanimous ‘yes!’” LeBlanc needed a table that could read registration

marks from a digital printer so that it could cut squares or contours—whatever shape— on the printed piece. He also creates a lot of dimensional letters, so a router was important.

Deciding on the Kongsberg V, a cost-effective finishing table “There are a few different table manufacturers, and this was an important investment—one that we believe we will be using for a decade. I needed a machine where the company had a good track record among FASTSIGNS franchisees and within the industry.” remarks LeBlanc.”When I ask people what they are doing, I listen. I spoke with people who were consistently happy with the Kongsberg table. I also knew that FASTSIGNS headquarters supported them.” They decided to invest in a Kongsberg V table and installed it in October 2014. “Price was a significant factor. If I had to make a decision before the Kongsberg V, I would have waited another year,” remembers LeBlanc.”The price let me move sooner. I assessed the sacrifices that I would have to make with power and speed, and compared them to larger Kongsberg tables. I visited FASTSIGNS in Burlington, Canada. They were running their larger table at 1/2 and

1/4 speeds, which was certainly sufficient for them. It also was able to do routing—an important feature.” Esko had a local rep, a very comforting thought for LeBlanc.”I understand that Esko has reps throughout North America,” comments LeBlanc.”It’s nice that I don’t have to work with someone who is far away. I feel like I have a local relationship with Esko.” The Kongsberg V table has already come in handy. “The timeline with our largest retail client’s most recent job was extremely tight and would have been difficult if done outside. Now that they have a significant in-house capability, the large project, created in Coroplast, was easy to complete. We have completed a couple runs of signs for a security company where we produced 100-150 square Coroplast signs. This would have been a big problem for us before. We ran them through the cutter and it saved a lot of time,” raves LeBlanc. “We also needed to create a 3D letter sign for another customer. I really don’t like hard and fast deadlines for a sign that will be used for years, but the client was making it for a specific event. We were able to meet the deadline while creating a very high-quality sign—something we would not have been able without the Kongsberg V

table. It got us the order. In the past we would have turned it down.” The Kongsberg V table has met every demanding job, cutting plexi and acrylic very well. LeBlanc particularly likes the clean edges on OVC plastic. Recently, as a test, they created a 3D piece where the router cut out a custom 1/4” shape within a larger shape, as if a sand blaster did it. The Kongsberg table is also making the sales force more productive. “Before, when my sales people tried to sell certain projects, they were unable to quote them easily. We had to send a job request to the subcontractor,” recounts LeBlanc.”Now, with the Kongsberg table and our in-house capability, they can quote projects easily, like standees, or dimensional letter jobs. Our salespeople are more confident and are converting more orders.” “In the history of our business, success has come through technology,” concludes LeBlanc.”In the early years, there was thermal transfer printing, then inkjet printing. Now I see the Kongsberg table, and flatbed cutting, as a way of staying ahead of the competition by providing services unavailable from other businesses.”
