FROM THE EDITORS’ DESK Dear Readers, Recycling, sustainability and environment friendly processes are hot topics today. Japanese paper products firm Curetex Corp. has entered the Indian market. With the establishment of its local unit, Natsu Enterprises India Pvt. Ltd., Curetex has braced itself to meet the increased demand for paper bags. The company is looking to establish a paper bag manufacturing plant at Ludhiana. Project Liberty by Indian packaging major Essel Propack is a first of its kind and path breaking attempt to recycle multilayer laminates which consists of aluminium in the structure, by separating aluminium and polymer into two distinct and reusable streams without the use of chemicals or heat. With Project Liberty, Essel takes the leap ahead towards recycling all its tubes. An important development in the packaging industry has been Constantia Flexibles Group agreeing to acquire a majority shareholding in the Indian film-based laminates producer Creative Polypack. Creative Polypack is India’s fourth largest flexible packaging group, manufacturing film-based flexible packaging for the food and home & personal care (HPC) industries, as well as paper-based soap wrappers. The company serves the leading domestic and international consumer goods companies in India. Another major acquisition in Indian packaging world has been by Huhtamaki – going to acquire the Indian business and related assets of pressure sensitive labels manufacturer Ajanta Packaging. Promoted by Sudhir and Chandan Khanna, Ajanta was the pioneer and largest privately owned Pressure Sensitive label manufacturers in India. The company has manufacturing facilities in Daman (West India) and Baddi (North India). Also, Mark Andy has acquired Presstek, the global supplier of DI (direct imaging) offset plates and presses, CTP solutions and worldclass service for commercial and in-plant customers. However, Presstek’s Zahara waterless plates division, which is not being acquired would be spun into a new entity, Verico Technology. Konica Minolta Business Solutions, global provider of advanced imaging and networking technologies is going to install its first AccurioJet KM-1 UV Inkjet press in India. The cutting-edge AccurioJet KM-1 UV Inkjet press solution comes with a B2 plus Sheet-fed. The press is a favourite among printers for its unprecedented image production quality and capability to print on a host of media. Another key development in the digital printing sphere is from Heidelberg stable – the enhancement of the new Versafire digital printing generation – the new Versafire EV. The press allows new business opportunities for creative commercial applications, such as printing luminescent posters, invitations, admission tickets, wristbands, bright advertising brochures and security elements on printed products. The first user (JD Druck) of Heidelberg Versafir EV is impressed by the new possibilities. With the new “invisible red” special toner, the Versafire EV offers now a total of five special colours. Find all this and more about the latest happening from around the world of Printing, Packaging, Signage and related industry in this March issue of PRESSIdeas.

‘Ready for the next step’ by Koenig & Bauer Workshops on the Rapida RDC 106 offers close-up insights into rotary die cutting.
Under the motto “Ready for the next step!”, Koenig & Bauer invited trade professionals to its Radebeul facility in the second half of March to learn more about the benefits of rotary die-cutting on the Rapida RDC 106 in packaging, label and commercial production. During the course of each one-day workshop, up to 20 participants were able to test the claims made about the innovative rotary die-cutter for themselves and gained a first-hand impression of its performance capabilities. The Rapida RDC 106 brings printed sheets into final shape both efficiently and precisely, whether labels, business stationery or folding cartons. With production speeds up to 15,000 sheets/hour, makeready savings of 40% and more, and up to 65% higher efficiency, the Rapida RDC 106 is a genuine game-changer compared to traditional flat-bed diecutters. At the same time, different equipment variants for the individual units enable several processes to be combined on a single pass through the machine: Die-cutting/kiss-cutting, hole punching and extraction, creasing/embossing, stripping – everything is possible. The Rapida RDC 106 is a single machine handling five technologies for three market segments. During the workshops, the visitors witnessed

high-speed die-cutting production and fast job changeovers. The demonstrations were tailored to the interests of each group and ranged from pencil boxes and pharmaceutical packaging to banderoles, selfadhesive stickers and a diversity of labels. The two demo machines processed not only 60 µm inmould label films, but also 260 gsm board. Alongside the practical presentations, the workshops offered ample opportunity to explore the technical details of the Rapida RDC 106. Technicians and operators willingly opened guards and covers to allow the visitors a close-up view of the die-cutting units, where they could familiarise themselves with the highprecision adjustments (e.g. setting of the die-cutting

pressure in 1 µm steps, separately for each side) and follow the fast forme changing with their own eyes. With its high production speeds, the Rapida RDC 106 is ideal for long runs, but thanks to the fast job changeovers equally economical on short runs.
The times in which two die-cutters were necessary to keep pace with the print output from a sheetfed offset press are a thing of the past with the Rapida RDC 106. Early adopters and further prospective users of the rotary die-cutter Rapida RDC 106 are already to be found in Germany, Denmark and France, and even as far afield as Brazil and Japan.

Gulf News opts Q.I. Press Controls retrofit Gulf News was the first printing concern in the UAE to decide on having its register system retrofitted. Whereas the printing industry in other parts of the world has increasingly been discovering the merits of retrofitting, in the United Arab Emirates this is not yet part of daily practice. The process, which involves the installation of state-of-the art innovations in the field of automation technology on existing printing presses, still has to win over popularity in the region. Gulf News was the first printing concern in the UAE to decide on having its register system retrofitted. To carry out the project, the company chose Q.I. Press Controls (QIPC), the Dutch specialist in measurement and control systems for the printing industry. “We see clear benefits in automated register control and an upgrade of our now outdated cutoff control,” explains Michael Condon of Gulf News, a company which now has a pioneering role in the region. “After having used a similar system from QIPC on our new KBA Cortina press, we decided to modernise our manroland CROMOMAN too.” QIPC is
to ink-water balance and density. As a result we are now able to achieve better results more quickly and waste can be reduced by between 30 to 40 percent.” Erwin van Rossem adds this: “Gulf News will now be able to recover the costs of the investment within two years.” delighted that Gulf News has opted for them to install the trailblazing system. “What’s more, we are absolutely convinced that the success of this project will start to rouse the interests of other printing companies in the region,” Erwin van Rossem, head of sales at QIPC, believes.
Savings in waste In total, 33 mRC-3D cameras for colour register and cut-off control were installed on nine towers. “The biggest savings will be during start-up,” anticipates Michael Condon. “Thanks to automation of the register system and improvements in the cut-off control, operators can devote more attention instead
Future Installation of the new automation system has just been completed. Nevertheless, both companies are already looking towards future cooperation. “I know for sure that support for the new system won’t be the only reason for staying in touch with QIPC,” says Michael Condon. “We’ll be keeping an eye out for other cost-saving technical innovations that may come on-stream in the future.” This is music to the ears of QIPC. “We’re keen to let other printers in the region know about the benefits that register control can bring,” concludes Erwin van Rossem. “Gulf News’ satisfaction with the system is the best advert we can have.”
How the connected consumer is redefining news media How the “connected individual” is impacting news media is the focus of a recent report released by the International News Media Association (INMA). In “How the Connected Consumer Is Redefining News Media,” author Paul Berney outlines the ramifications for media companies when the individual is in control of the intersection of publishers, media, and their audiences. Berney, founder of The Connected Marketer and a mobile marketing specialist, describes how “connectedness” has changed the behaviour and expectation of readers and, subsequently, should be changing how marketers communicate to this “connected individual.”
Mobile devices are empowering consumers to not just become multi-channel readers, but also to be connected patients, shoppers, and voters.
•
•
Attention as finite resource: Reduced attention spans caused by “always on” devices are turning attention into a finite resource – which is having a ripple effect on how stories get told.
•
Mobile driving connectedness:
Connected marketing emerging in response: In response, media companies are embracing a shift to “connected marketing” to meet the needs of the connected individual, which impacts the brand experience across platforms.
Among the report highlights:
•
Personalisation and friction points: There is an increasing need for personalisation and the elimination of friction points driven by connected individual attributes.
Consumer expectations rising: These connected individuals have higher expectations for news and information, especially via mobile devices where standards are rapidly rising.
•
•
Emerging behavioural patterns: Behavioural patterns are emerging on connected individuals ranging from an inability to focus to the need for participation to a need for instant gratification.
The INMA report is punctuated with interviews and case studies from The Wall Street Journal, News Corp Australia, Hearst Digital, Financial Times, #hashtagourstories, Mather Economics, NZZ, Axel Springer, De Persgroep, and The Washington Post. “How the Connected Consumer Is Redefining News Media” is available for free to INMA members and available to non-members for US$795 – which includes one year of association membership, all strategic reports, Webinars, and access to all INMA content and peer connection tools. Heidelberg presents new Digital Press Versafire EV The new Versafire EV allows new business opportunities for creative commercial applications. First user JD Druck impressed by the new possibilities.
The enhancement of the new Versafire digital printing generation is fully focused on customer benefit and the market requirements. With the Versafire EV, Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) now offers a truly versatile digital production system, designed for use at entry level as well as by experienced digital printing providers. “The Versafire EV gives our customers a flexible production system that is specially designed to ideally meet the requirements in the graphic arts industry and that they can use to further enhance their digital business model as a result of diversification and optimization,” explains Stephan Plenz, Member of the Management Board responsible for Digital Technology at Heidelberg.
Standing out with special effects
The use of “invisible red” provides protection against copying and is particularly suitable for security-relevant applications. The five special colours facilitate a wide variety of creative applications.
Key Notes : > “Invisible red” for entry level security applications. > First white then CMYK for special effects with coloured paper. > Simple integration into production workflow with the Prinect Digital Frontend.

With the new “invisible red” special toner, the Versafire EV offers now a total of five special colours. Along white, clear toner, neon yellow and neon pink, “invisible red” provides additional embellishment options. In daylight, it has a slightly glossy effect and under UV light, the toner shines bright red. The use of “invisible red” provides protection against copying and is particularly suitable for security-relevant applications. The five special colours facilitate a wide variety of creative applications, such as printing
luminescent posters, invitations, admission tickets, wristbands, bright advertising brochures and security elements on printed products. The new Versafire EV is able to print white first and the CMYK process colours on top, creating strong luminous images when printing on coloured substrates and achieving new unusual effects. Where previously several processes were required, it is all done now in a single pass.
High quality and precise printing results The new automatic inline calibration and inline register provide a high degree of stability, precision and improved quality. Inline colour measurement and automatic calibration take place ahead of the printing process and ensure constant colour stability across the entire run. Top image quality is achieved thanks to the new resolution of 4,800 × 2,400 dpi. The Versafire EV has an increased printing speed of 85 or 95 A4 pages per minute and processes grammages of up to 360 gsm, ensuring a high level of productivity. Furthermore, the system is able to print banners up to a length of 700 mm (duplex) and as much as 1,260 mm (simplex).
pressideas/ digital
Even better integration with the new Prinect Digital Frontend The Prinect Digital Frontend (DFE), developed by Heidelberg and unique in the print media industry, allows intelligent integration into digital and offset printing processes. Using this DFE the Versafire EV can be easily integrated into the existing workflow of a print shop at the same time that it processes variable print data considerably faster. Another new feature is the 17-inch touchscreen to control the machine and the print jobs directly from the DFE ensuring that the operator can keep an eye on everything. Since the middle of last year, more and more customers have attended Versafire production training sessions, gaining valuable detailed knowledge about setting up media and the machine itself. In addition, customers receive a matching software to control media set up, the Media Management Tool. The assistant-aided user interface enables the time and work needed for setting up substrates to be significantly reduced. All settings can be saved, exported and imported, as well as loaded onto other Versafire machines.
First user JD Druck now offers its customers even more possibilities JD Druck GmbH in Lauterbach in Hesse is the ideal company for field testing the new Versafire EV. The print shop has focused on exceptional customer service and top-class quality for more than 125 years. Today, 65 employees produce offset and digital printing products for renowned agency and industry customers, as well as for publishers. They focus on advertising printing but small packaging jobs and point of sale displays are
also produced. The catchment area stretches from Germany to Austria, Switzerland and Luxembourg. “We entered the digital printing sector very early and I believe in the opportunities that personalization and customization bring,” confirms Managing Director Jörg Göttlicher. The trained typesetter took over the print shop from his father in 1991 and is systematically developing the company. This is evident when one looks at the machines in the digital printing department – where the various Heidelberg Versafire models can be found. At the end of January, JD Druck began the field test with the new Versafire EV and is able to directly compare the performance with the predecessor models. “The Versafire EV is heading in the just the right direction and, after just a short period of time, we can see very positive results,” confirmed Jörg Göttlicher. When asked about the best new features, operator Steffen Möller came up with a number of points. “One of them is the improved user-friendliness due to the new feeder with a flap, which means inserting the banner paper is now much easier. Also, the larger 17-inch touchscreen makes configuring the basic settings much more simple.” In addition he is also happy with the automatic inline register and good color stability ensured by the new inline sensors.
explains Jörg Göttlicher. “This includes all-round service with B-to-B shops, fast delivery and logistics services. We produce small runs and rush jobs as well as personalized products by means of digital printing and larger runs and gang runs with offset printing.” The press room boasts a Speedmaster XL 105 five-colour press with coating, and postpress has four Stahlfolder folding machines, a Stichmaster saddlestitcher and two Polar cutting machines. In the summer, an Easymatrix diecutter will be installed so that the company can also benefit from this added value and achieve faster processes. Customers and interested parties can experience at first hand the new design possibilities and the enhanced media applications of the Versafire EV at its European launch at the Heidelberg site in Wiesloch-Walldorf on April 18, 2018. Further markets to follow!
“The possibility of now printing white first is super. It saves us a printing operation and creates great effects and quality on coloured paper,” says Möller enthusiastically. With multiple certifications of the Deutsche Post, JD Druck already has a very good reputation in the digital printing sector with its direct mailing and letter shop services. “We put our trust in state-of-the-art printing technology and in highly-motivated staff,”

Brands and Labels The Label World is transforming at an unprecedented rate due to which Label printing & Packaging industries are persistently evolving to meet the ever growing & emerging market needs.
of Label Industry, Brand Owners and Consumers is limping.
Views of Industry experts on how does brand owners perceive the ongoing changes in Label Industry. Today’s technology driven consumer has totally revolutionized his shopping experience. He is more aware and demanding which has led to many challenges for Brand owners. Where on the one hand it is opportunistic yet on the other it has made the competition fierce among brand owners.
“Brand differentiation is essential to retail marketing success, so packaging plays a primary role by calling attention to your products over those of competitors……..hence it will not be improper to state that ‘The Package is the Product’.” – Samir Patkar, Heidelberg/ Gallus
Key Notes : > Brand has to stand out in digital campaigns and on the shelf to sustain in the market and enjoy consumer’s loyalty. > Brand owners looking for smart and attractive packaging solutions with labels playing a crucial role. > The need of the hour is customized and personalized packaging to go hand in hand with the digital marketing campaigns.

Samir Patkar, Heidelberg Asia & Regional Head of Sales – Asia Pacific, Gallus Label Presses.
Today, if a brand needs to sustain itself in the market and wants to enjoy consumer’s loyalty, it has to stand out in the digital campaigns as well as on the shelf. This has opened up a host of opportunities for Label printing & Packaging industry as brand owners are looking for smart and attractive packaging solutions with labels playing a crucial role. The need of the hour is customized and personalized packaging to go hand in hand with the digital marketing campaigns launched by the brand or to attract particular genre of clientele. The pace of change has led to attractive designs which need to have multiple effects to engage consumer. Today a label is no more ‘A Product Identification data’ as it used to be, but it has become multi dimensional adding more cores to its meaning.
It is a brand identity, it has developed a persona of its own, It stands out. With the rise in the complex requirements by the brand owners, label jobs will tend to increase considerably. By incorporating technology advents and marketing gimmicks labels have out grown themselves from their traditional image. They are now viewed as a sophisticated tool for not only positioning a brand but an identification mark of the brand authentication as well. The challenge which lies amidst this advancement for Label Industry is reluctance of brand owners to pay in accordance. The cooperation between the tricycle
Labeling which plays an integral part of packaging and brand recognition also plays key roles in merchandising and product success, furnishing opportunities for producers to stand out among competitors as they jostle for retail shelf space. Product differentiation calls attention to individual brands in many ways. By associating unique characteristics with their products, brand owners create instant recognition and authority within their niches, leading to higher sales as visibility and credibility rise. The name of a product/ Brand, for example, provides a cornerstone to build on, often inspiring brand themes that increase recognition among consumers. Whatever you sell, your logo and supporting artwork aim to please those within your target market, so the visual images do more good than your sales pitch alone. Even your colour-scheme is chosen with

consumer appeal in mind, catering to trends within your niche. In the times of retail modernization brands today need to stand out in the crowd especially when certain goods today use same size, shape and style of packaging. As markets become more competitive, however, brand owners continue to work with converters to help set them apart from competing brands. One way forward to create Colourful graphics with the intent to add value embellishments in the label by process mix of printing processes like flexo, screen, cold/hot foil, gravure all in line to create colour brilliance and high product appeal to attract consumer attention that highly supports brand differentiation. Playing around with different substrates that support both added value and sustainability is getting more popular, for example, labels are now printed directly on a variety of materials, clear films, metallised surfaces, higher use of PP/PE/PET including Silver metallised films that were once difficult to print. And colour is used more effectively than it once was, helping brands establish themselves through colour recognition. Brand differentiation is essential to retail marketing success, so packaging plays a primary role by calling attention to your products over those of competitors…….. hence it will not be improper to state that “The Package is the Product”. Considering the critical criteria’s as above the converters need to understand the critical role they play today in supply chain and brand building of brand owners and ensure that a business environment of win – win is created. Innovation that supports business growth needs to create value for everybody in the supply chain for the cycle of innovation to continue …. Else it only damages product value and erosion of street prices which does not support anybody business goals!
Mr. Manish Mehta, MD Reifenhauser (India) Marketing Mumbai THERE IS NO DENYING THE IMPORTANCE OF THE LABEL for content, marketing, brand positioning and the company image itself. And at the same time, there is also no denying the fact that margins are constantly under pressure, with brand owners demanding always a high quality, yet
manufacturing techniques to support their drivers. The most important ones are: • shorter runs for different reasons like localization of products, different product versions and flavors according to local preferences or trial marketing actions such as customized or even •
not willing to increase prices especially for packaging. UNLESS, there are new features or value adds that not only benefit the brand owner but also ensure benefits to consumers. This therefore, and now, even more, underscores the need for high end technologies, not only to optimize on productivity and production costs, but also new solutions such as aesthetic appreciations or security, anti-counterfeiting solutions et al. Of late, has been a trend of big players selling off to multinationals and flexible packaging convertor also wanting to have a share of the label pie.
personalized packaging. fully integrated and digitized workflows to support last-minute decisions on manufacturing changes to come to a fully flexible production process which allows for just-in-time production.
The label industry has to cope with these drivers and the resulting requirements and both converters and brand owners are typically on a balance between the new requirements and the new (available) production techniques. At Xeikon we see a lot of marketing trials for new types of labeling illustrating the drive to fully flexible customization as well as growing print volumes at our customers doing this already today.”
Mahesh Kode, Business Unit Head, Narrow Web Siegwerk India,Gurgaon
While on the one hand this is increasing competition ( to the benefit of the brand owner in terms of costs, delivery and differentiation), on the other hand, it is also a very clear indicator of the expected growth in the industry, which is being reflected in terms of number of machines being installed as well. To cut a long story short, mushrooming of players will continue, as will as the need for differentiation, along with the growing demand for labels with newer and fresher concepts of sales and marketing. Quality demands in terms of infrastructure, kind of machines, clean room etc will also be precursors for higher realizations in the markets along with brand image and brand positioning taking center stage.

bulk-pack with a pump-dispenser, sometimes a see-through top-quality clear container to showcase the product inside, with a high-end Pressure-Sensitive Label on the outside, with all kinds of decoration technologies, vying for attention on a supermarket shelf…!!! The number of brands, variants, packssizes and the challenge of catching the consumer’s eye in a busy mall aisle only meant that the PS-label be as eye-catching as possible, able to stand out in the crowd, and be the chosen one to be picked up by the ever-so-discerning Indian consumer, who knows what he or she wants in a product, and yet is swayed by the attractive appearance of a beautifully rendered Label! Sometimes First impressions are Last impressions, as they say!! The Indian Labeling industry has been quick to sense and adapt to this changing need and ever-increasing demand for Aesthetics, Anti-duplication & Branding, and Shelf-appeal challenges. The country has continued to see a spate of high-end Imported presses being installed and added over the years, producing labels that rival any others produced in the most developed countries, and yet, at what price??!! Alas, the Brand Owners who have created this need for enhanced decoration techniques and fine, high-quality printing, have then set the Packaging Development and Purchase teams to browbeat the Labelconvertors and suppliers into submission, challenging them to produce the highest quality at the lowest possible prices… It is a fiercely competitive scenario, wherein quality, consistency, supply-chain, innovation are all taken for granted in the face of say, a reverse-auction, that does not always end up altering the original vendor, but only secures lower prices from the same supplier when the actual auction-winner is unable to service demand in real-life!!! One hopes that the MNCs, domestic FMCG players (who are getting as successful as the former, sometimes even outshining them with products and campaigns!) and BOs start realizing that this vicious cycle has to end somewhere, and their partners in the entire supply-chain should get their dues worth for the investment, hard work and systems that they deploy to produce millions of labels that

all look the same and yet stand out! Label Convertors, on the other hand, need to continue improving efficiencies, enhance their people-skills and knowledge to increase productivity, cost their products appropriately based on not just RMC but all direct and indirect costs that go into running a Labelprinting plant, and defend their prices based on due merit and cost justification. India has come of age, and the Indian consumer is now far more discerning and affluent, not wanting to buy a product because it is the cheapest off the rack, and it is time the industry recognizes this change and stops focusing only on the cost or the price-point, and instead brings in more value to the end-user in various ways, be it the product performance itself, or a premium appeal of a superiorly labeled container, which will ultimately ensure sustainable business growth for all the players associated with it!
Mr. Gururaj Ballarwad, Management Consultant, Signode India & President , ALPS, N.Delhi In India, all the Brand owners want most of the features & decoration but unfortunately they don’t have budget to spend. Most of the Brand owners are on cost reduction drive. As a cost component Label only adds 1-2% to the total cost but the questions which haunts is, why only Label is at the radar. Label is the selling point for them, still Label is the only one component which is always targeted. If they reduce the decoration of the label they will invite more & more counterfeit in the market. Instead of increasing their margins & sales either they will find that brand not growing or in negative. My suggestion is wherever they are in the leading position they should add more features, decoration & improve the sales rather than looking at reducing the packaging cost. To end this discussion, I would like to add, the tools that Indian Label Industry need to beat the current course scenario are: • Setting the Costing right, to include equipment payback & investment for

Wise Equipment choice, with low cost of production & long term quality product delivery in mind. USP (unique sales proposition) has to be built into the product, this may be decoration, security features, on time delivery etc. Every new financial year collaborative brainstorming & planning to get better pricing as the opponent for sure is doing a detailed planning on how to get prices reduced and that too in a very structured manner.... leaving our front end guy defenseless.

Essel Propack, part of the USD 4.2 billion “Essel Group”, with FY17 turnover of over USD 368 million, is the largest specialty packaging global company. The laminated plastic tubes manufactured by Essel Propack cater to the FMCG and Pharma space. Employing over 2852 people representing 25 different nationalities, Essel Propack functions through 20 state of the art facilities and is present in 11 countries, selling over 7 billion tubes and growing every year. Holding Oral care market share of 36% in volume terms globally, company’s manufacturing facilities cater to diverse categories that include brands in Beauty & Cosmetics, Pharma & Health, Food, Oral care and Home, offering customized solutions through continuously pioneering first-in-class innovations in materials, technology and processes.
Project Liberty – a first of its kind attempt to recycle multilayer laminates with aluminium in the structure, by separating aluminium and polymer without the use of chemicals or heat.
Key Notes : > With Project Liberty, Essel takes the leap ahead towards recycling all its tubes. > Over the next few months, will focus on its successful implementation on commercial scale. > With global partners co-developed solid state environmental friendly process to liberate aluminium from the laminate/ tubes.

March 2018
Project Liberty is a first of its kind and path breaking attempt to recycle multilayer laminates which consists of aluminium in the structure, by separating aluminium and polymer into two distinct and reusable streams without the use of chemicals or heat. In this effort, Essel has collaborated with multiple major technical partners across the globe and co-developed a solid state environmental friendly process to liberate aluminium from the laminate/ tubes. ABL poses challenges in recycling and the company has been working relentlessly over the last 4 years, on developing a solution to separate the polymer and
aluminium. Essel uses two basic structures to make laminated tubes : • •
Plastic Barrier Laminates (PBL) tubes – made of all Plastic layers and are easily recyclable Aluminium Barrier Laminate (ABL) tubes – made with combination of polymers and has aluminium foil as the barrier layer.
The main objective of launching Project Liberty is to establish a traceable and sustainable recycling process, which will not only fulfil company’s vision of “every single tube made by Essel is recyclable” but will also help all its partners across the value chain including the Brand Owners, in achieving their sustainability goals/commitments to their stake holders. With Project ‘Liberty’, the polymer fraction can be recovered from ABL tubes and the same can be recycled to various applications. The recovered aluminium metal also shall go as metal scrap for reuse, thereby making every single tube recyclable. The Project will be implemented in 2 Phases. It shall begin with India where: In Phase-I: The Company will recycle its own tubes and laminate scrap, for which it will be ready by the end of this year. In Phase-II: Essel will offer the re-cycling facility to its customers and partner with Brand owners to regulate the post consumer tubes and offer for recycling. Gradually, in subsequent phases, it shall roll out such facilities globally.

Packaging with High-speed New packaging product Styropor P 24 Speed with reduced moulding cycle and conditioning times.
As a responsible company, Essel Propack has always strived hard towards achieving better sustainability. Some of company’s other initiatives that have been acclaimed and used by its customers are:
a) Etain – Tubes made with upto 25% PostConsumer recycled resin content, promoting the use of PCR resins, reducing the demand for virgin raw materials. b) Green Maple Leaf – PE based recyclable barrier tubes with HDPE caps that can be 100% recycled in to C2 HDPE recycle stream. This laminate is one of its kinds globally and has recently been awarded under the “sustainability” category by the American Tube Council. c) Super Titanium – Tubes designed with better stiffness to enable reduction in web thickness without compromising on other functional requirement enabling source reduction.
BASF now offers a new plastic grade for the manufacture of EPS (expandable polystyrene) foam packaging. For the products in the Styropor P 24 Speed range the pentane content has been lowered to approximately 4.8 per cent, thereby reducing moulding cycle and intermediate conditioning times. The new grade Styropor P 324 Speed with a density of 25 grams per litre yields an up to 50 per cent shorter moulding cycle time in comparison with Styropor P 326 at an average moulding steam pressure.
Easy processing for food and E&E packaging Just like the classic Styropor P 26, this new type of Styropor is approved for food packaging and has a high mechanical resistance as well as excellent flexural and compressive strength. Moreover, it has good fusion properties and a smooth surface finish. As with all Styropor packaging grades, the new Styropor P 24 Speed is without flame retardant and especially suitable for the manufacture of thin-walled technical mouldings as well as food packaging and cool boxes. The material is available in three bead sizes ranging from 0.4 mm to 1.3 mm. The new product rounds off BASF’s EPS range for the packaging industry.

2017 L9 World Label Awards L9 announces 2017 WLA competition results – includes category and Honourable Mention winners. several years. Other associations involved in the 2017 competition included FINAT (Europe), TLMI (USA), JFLP (Japan), FPLMA (Australia), SALMA (New Zealand) and PEIAC (China).
The L9 group of international label associations has announced the results of the 2017 L9 World Label Awards (WLA) competition judged by an international panel of judges representing each of the participating associations. The judging took place in Brussels the day before Labelexpo Europe at the exhibition venue. The L9 is an alliance of global label associations formed to jointly formulate policies and collecting strategic information of global interest to the worldwide label industry. The current class structure includes 22 classes covering all the principal printing processes and market applications. The results are listed in class order with the Winners announced first followed by the Honourable Mention (HM) awards. All of the L9 label associations are invited, each year, to submit entries for the World Label Awards. This ensures that the competition has a truly international flavour. We were pleased to welcome representatives from the Indian Label Association (LMAI) who were taking part for the first time in
In order to be considered for entry in this prestigious competition a label converter must first have won an award in their “local” association’s competition as this is the only route to entry. Each L9 association is permitted to submit one entry in each class, entries from individual converters are not accepted. Winning an award in the WLA competition is highly valued throughout the worldwide label fraternity signalling that the label converter has achieved real excellence in label production. The awards not only reflect the achievements of the production departments involved in producing the label, they are also used as a valuable marketing tool. No wonder they are often referred to as the technical Oscars of the global label industry. The jury spends a considerable time examining and debating the technical and aesthetic features of each label including converting and finishing technology. “Never will a label have been examined in such detail, even by the converter’s QC department. We expect a high standard of printing at this level and we also look for the quality of the design of the label” comments Tony White, chairman of the judging panel. “We continue to be surprised by the quality of the entries year on year” he continues. The judges for the 2017 competition included Tony White (FINAT) Chair, Mike Buystedt (TLMI) Vice Chairman, Harveer Sahni (LMAI),

BOBST at Labelexpo Southeast Asia 2018 - To showcase excellence in process technology at the event’s first edition in Bangkok. BOBST will put on a grand show on its Labelexpo Southeast Asia stand in May 2018. The first edition of the Labelexpo Southeast Asia will take place from 10th to 12th May at BITEC in Bangkok, Thailand. The BOBST stand will be one of the largest at the show. “The Southeast Asian market has been keeping us very busy of late. The label and packaging industry is booming and the interest in our range of solutions is high and continues to grow,” comments Matteo Cardinotti, Managing Director of Bobst Firenze and Head of BOBST Narrow & mid-web multi-process Product Line. “Following the huge crowd turnout recorded at the Labelexpo Asia exhibition in China in December 2017 and given the comprehensiveness of the exhibits, displays and activities planned, the upcoming event is a great opportunity for showing our equipment live to a wide number of converters in the SEA region and we are gearing up to provide them with a memorable experience when they visit our stand.” The BOBST M1 Line, a press dedicated to label production, will be the star of the show with seven daily printing and inline converting demonstrations (five on 12 May). “We launched the new M1 Line, configured with mechanical line shaft and laser preregister and automatic register at Labelexpo Europe just over six months ago,” explains Matteo Cardinotti. “And I am pleased to say that because we never stop upgrading the performance of our equipment, the 8-colour M1 UV flexo press on show will offer even

more, further extending the range of filmic applications that can be run on the line.” Alongside solutions dedicated to label printing, most BOBST machines in the inline UV flexo range are suitable to be configured for applications serving the needs of labels, flexible packaging and folding carton packaging manufactures. This flexibility opens up for converters a variety of untapped opportunities of product diversification to enter new markets which visitors to the stand will be interested to learn about. The latest developments include the M5X Line, also presented last year, whose optimized fixed configuration combines the flexibility and quality of labels and packaging production with the attractiveness of the level of investment and the short delivery time.
Other BOBST solutions that visitors at Labelexpo Southeast Asia will be able to discuss with BOBST experts include CI flexo and gravure printing presses and laminators which are especially effective for mid- to wide-web short run production, as well as the range of silicone, adhesive and pre/post coating lines and vacuum metallizing solutions suitable for a great variety of applications in the label and flexible packaging manufacturing industry. Present as always on the BOBST stand will be samples highlighting excellence in process technology, as well as displays illustrating BOBST products and services portfolio. Information on the benchmark service offering will demonstrate to visitors the extent of the support which BOBST offers to its customers.

ETPA Packaging installs Gallus ECS 340 The Greek label printer ETPA Packaging installed a Gallus ECS 340 at their production site in Komotini, North Eastern Greece. ETPA Packaging of Greece is headquartered in Athens. The company, founded in 1983 has installed a Gallus ECS 340 at their Komotini site. With its focus set on selfadhesive labels, shrink sleeves and flexible materials, ETPA now broadens its spectrum and offers its customers the best possibilities when selling labels. George Ekonomou, Sales Director at ETPA Packaging decided to invest in a Gallus ECS 340 which consists of 9 flexo printing stations and 4 screen printing modules and is further equipped with a cold foil unit as well as the possibility of backside printing on glue, UV Lamination for monofoil material and PS Lamination. Ekonomou is particularly convinced of the machine because it offers them incomparable flexibility, especially when printing silk screen jobs. Being nearly twice as big as comparable companies, ETPA is now the most influential label converter in Greece. It is driving the label market and has a huge influence on the market when taking decisions. Furthermore, it is the only Greek company which is certified as worldwide supplier for well-known multinational companies. 120
qualified people are currently employed at ETPA and the number of new employments is constantly growing year by year. On top of that, the company is always investing in new technologies and new productive machines.
Since March 2017 – exactly a year has passed since the machine was installed – ETPA packaging is running jobs for labels, sleeves and sachets on the ECS 340. “This is the first Gallus we bought, but we are more than happy to have invested in a Swiss quality product. The machine’s versatility is astonishing and the labels, the most important factor, of course, are of impressive quality,” says Ekonomou. Seeing this quality and versatility, it is no surprise that, since its launch in 2009, the Gallus ECS 340 has been the top-selling label printing machine with short web path. More than 450 machines have been sold worldwide and provide daily support to Gallus customers in the label printing sector. The outstanding web feed and the extremely short web path are decisive in delivering the excellent register performance of the Gallus ECS 340. This press produces complex diecuts at maximum speed and is able to print on almost any kind of substrate: paper, PE, PP and even tube laminate. Additionally, the machine system Gallus ECS 340 convinces with a new UV flexographic printing unit with even better performance.

BIS update of printing ink standard may ban Toluene The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is working to update the current standard (IS 15495) for printing ink for food packaging and several harmful chemicals. Several packaged food companies in India will be affected by the new standards and may even have to alter their label and packaging printing norms and materials used therein. Once such material is Toluene, a chemical commonly used in paint thinners. Toluene has already been banned in the food industry in several countries because studies have shown that it may cause liver and kidney damage in humans. Around 80% FMCG companies in India use toluene-based solvents in packaging materials though studies have revealed that toluene can migrate between layers of

packaging. Toluene may be banned with the new standards coming into effect. In future, packaged food consumers may find a ‘toluene-free’ mention on their products. Though certain players in the industry are already taking care that no food comes in direct contact with Toluene in a packaging, yet total elimination of the harmful chemical’s use in inks will surely take some time. Since, ink is just a fraction of the total cost of a packaging and Toluene-free inks can be as well run on the existing printing equipment,

Separation from RGB to Multicolor with GMG Colorplugin 1.3 GMG ColorPlugin 1.3 makes manual colour corrections and tedious work-arounds redundant and provides enormous time savings at the pre-press stage and in package printing. Colour management expert GMG has expanded its plugin for Adobe Photoshop in Version 1.3. With the new solution, based on GMG OpenColor separation profiles, now colour accurate separations from RGB into Multicolor colour spaces are possible with up to seven colours.
MinDot Adjust can now also be used on hidden or locked layers. With GMG ColorPlugin 1.3 individual channels can be exchanged or removed entirely or selectively. The automatic
compensation by the remaining channels ensures colour consistency when doing so. It is also possible to make a colour-accurate conversion between a range of colour spaces – in the Pro version also based on a self-created colour profile.
GMG product manager Peter Schöffler explains: “By using separation with the ChannelExtender, image data can be flexibly adapted to the printing process used.” The conversion can be switched on or off at any stage during image processing. This way the final result can be directly simulate at any stage of processing. A further innovation: The ColorBoost function makes images more saturated and vivid. The flexography function MinDot Adjust is now also available for defining the tonalthreshold value for spot colours. The Set-with-curve option ensures the capture of gradient details when doing so. The analog-to-digital transformation is sweeping through the sign, display and corrugated markets as sign providers and corrugated converters look beyond their production equipment to find an automated end-to-end workflow that ensures faster time to market, fewer errors and improved profitability. Waste can be created everywhere; via complex manual steps, equipment idle time, incorrect material handling or lack of workflow control. Many providers are seeking to eliminate waste and streamline the process from a design request coming in to shipping out a product. At FESPA 2018, they will find the path to this improved productivity and profitability at Esko Stands 3.2-C48 and 5.2-D30 during the 15 to 18 May event in Berlin.
“Our focus is on supporting the sign and display and corrugated sectors with integrated hardware and software solutions that address the requirements of a company’s business strategy. Our solutions will dramatically boost production capacity without the need to invest in additional headcount.” - Geert De Proost, Esko

HP unveils Rigid Latex Printing Technology at ISA Sign Expo New technology enables latex printing on multiple surfaces, including breakthrough HP White Latex Ink.
The first true hybrid latex technology by HP merges renowned flexible printing capabilities into rigid printing to enable Print Service Providers to expand their offering and enter new markets.

March 2018
At the recent ISA Sign Expo, HP Inc. announced the HP Latex R Series, the first, true hybrid latex technology that merges HP’s renowned flexible printing capabilities into rigid printing. The HP Latex R Series brings the most vibrant colours into the rigid printing world, and pioneers white ink capabilities with the introduction of HP Latex White Ink. The HP Latex R series brings unparalleled speed and quality to a wide range of rigid materials, such as foamboards, foam PVC, cardboard, fluted polypropylene, solid plastics, aluminum, wood and glass among others. Unlike UV printing technology, which creates a thick layer of ink that completely covers the material, HP’s water-based Latex Inks preserve the look and feel of the media, and delivers odourless prints that are both safe for the environment and the printer operator. “With the new HP Latex Rigid Technology, our customers can expand their offering into new, high-value applications while also opening fresh creative ideas and concepts for sign and display that provide their users greater value,” said Joan Perez
Pericot, General Manager, HP Large Format Graphics Business, HP Inc. Tackling one of the industry’s most pervasive limitations in printing, HP’s White Latex Ink has an innovative system that recirculates the white to avoid settling. For the first time, HP’s innovative White Latex Ink delivers glossy, high-quality “true white” that doesn’t yellow over time like traditional UV-based white ink does. “White ink has been a consistent problem for the industry. Traditionally it uses bigger and heavier pigment particles that frequently clog printheads, or the opaque mixture becomes separated and settles to the bottom of the ink reservoir. Until now, physically shaking the reservoirs often has been the necessary solution,” said Thom Brown, Chief Inkologist at HP. “Through HP’s investment in innovation around chemistry and engineering, the white ink solution with the HP Latex R Series is an industry breakthrough.” The HP Latex R Series will be available during Q3 of 2018, with a full industry debut occurring in May at FESPA in Berlin, Germany.

Marabu at FESPA 2018 - to highlighting its current portfolio of screen, digital, and pad printing inks, plus a number of new products. This year’s FESPA will take place from 15 to 18 May. Berlin is the venue for the 2018 FESPA trade fair. At stand B30 in hall 1.2, Marabu will be presenting its extensive portfolio of inks, plus many new solutions in screen and pad printing for food packaging, operator control panels and glass. It will also showcase a number of digital printing solutions – including its versatile new GBLfree solvent-based inks and an expanded range of UV-curable inkjet products. Moreover, it will spotlight the advantages of digital water-based options. New low-migration UV-curable screen printing ink for PE/PP plastic food packaging Food packaging has to perform a variety of tasks: it should present the product to catch the eye and encourage consumers to make a purchase – and, above all, it has to protect its contents. For this reason, inks for food packaging are subject to strict quality audits to verify that they are not susceptible to migration (i.e. the transfer of substances from the packaging material to the foodstuff). Marabu’s new Ultra Pack UVFP is the first officially approved (by Swiss Quality Testing Services, SQTS, a certified institute) for migration-sensitive PE/ PP plastics – the materials most widely used for packaging foodstuffs. Moreover, the very high reactiveness of UVFP inks ensures rapid drying and printing speeds of up to 4,000 containers per hour.
New versatile inks for container and flat glass Marabu is adding two ink ranges for diverse glass applications. The single-component Mara Tech MGO baking ink is ideal not only for glass, but also for screen and pad printing on metal where high resistance to chemicals is crucial. The ink contains silicone, and is therefore suitable for both first and second surfaces, in particular for container and flat glass. As a single-component product, it ensures highly reliable printing processes. This makes Mara Tech MGO the perfect choice for sensitive goods, such as baby bottles, drinking glasses and medical accessories. Marabu will also spotlight its two-component Mara Glass MGLA. This ink was developed for second surfaces on flat glass items, for example smartphones, input
systems(touch panels) and outdoor user interfaces – including control units for ships and boats, and digital map terminals in Berlin and other major cities.
New specialty inks for decorating front panels Capacitive touch interfaces are found in a wide variety of appliances, including washing machines, driers, dishwashers and ovens – and even coffee machines and microwaves. The latest devices are equipped with state-of-the-art front panels and integrated touch panels. Marabu’s Mara Panel MPA, a new range of specialty decorative inks, features an outstanding opaque white, plus a deep, non-conductive
black developed for printing on the back (second surface) of popular PMMA or PC plastics. Mara Panel MPA displays very high electrical resistance to avoid interference with the input system’s functionality. Furthermore, the range has been tested for resistance to water vapour and to common cleaning agents from leading manufacturers. In many cases, household appliances feature plastic panels within a metal housing. Marabu offers solutions for the entire device, even if individual components are made from differing materials, i.e. plastic, metal or glass.
New GBL-free solvent-based inks for diverse applications and improved safety Product safety is the top priority at Marabu. This year, for instance, the company is launching a new generation of GBL-free

solvent-based inks for digital printing in wide formats. Marabu customers will be able to choose between existing solutions and new, highly versatile GBL-free versions.
A broad spectrum of UV-curable digital inks Marabu’s UV-curable inkjet inks can be employed in a variety of situations, and are compatible with all common printer heads. The offering includes flexible Ultra Jet DUV-A inks for wide formats, and the Ultra Jet DUV-C range for printing directly on flat glass and on containers made from glass or PET. There is also an alternative line of inks for Océ Arizona printers, Ultra Jet DUV-GR, plus LED-curable Ultra Jet DLE-A products. Moreover, Marabu’s UV-curable portfolio now includes two new lines: Ultra Jet DUV-MF is very versatile, and was developed especially
for wide-format graphical applications. These products belong to a new generation of highly reactive inks that enhance roll-to-roll and hybrid printer productivity. Furthermore, Marabu has a new specialty ink for both indoor and outdoor POP/POS applications. It features an especially glossy finish and a wide colour gamut.
The advantages of water-based digital inks Water-based inks for digital printing are in
greater demand than ever, and the market is keen for new solutions. A key focus is digital products that come into contact with human skin or foodstuffs. Working closely with the printing industry, Marabu has created waterbased inkjet inks for flexible food packaging, cardboard, toys (in line with the EN71/3 standard), and digitally printed wallpapers. In general, these inks are ideal wherever eco-friendliness and product safety is critical, or where the advantages of water-based systems outweigh other considerations.
