FROM THE EDITORS’ DESK Dear Readers, The Bombay Master Printers’ Association (BMPA), celebrating its 60th Anniversary (1954-2014), collaborated with Heidelberger Druckmaschnien Germany (HDM) and Heidelberg India (HIN) to recently organize an exclusive international study tour for its members. In all 28 people signed-up for this first-of its-kind event from India to HDM. The report on the tour appears in two successive issues of PRESSIdeas starting from April and concludes with this May issue. The excited members of BMPA had an amazing learning tour which included visits to many top customers like B&K Offset and IST METZ, the world leaders in UV systems. interpack 2014 was characterised by an outstanding atmosphere prevailing amongst the approx. 2,700 exhibitors and 175,000 visitors in the 19 halls of the completely booked Düsseldorf Exhibition Centre. SAVE FOOD proved a particularly attention grabbing theme at interpack. The initiative of the same name combats food losses and waste and involves such partners as the FAO and the UNEP as well as over 110 members from the industry. The SAVE FOOD Congress showed how the problem of global food losses and waste can be fought across the entire value chain. Other highlights included HP unlocking its power of Digital for Packaging with new Indigo and Scitex solutions to enable converters and manufacturers to transition to on-demand, versioned packaging and Bobst mirroring its strong market position with Interpack success. The global major event on Digital just concluded in Munich with industry who’s who demonstrating their latest technologies. HP showcased the newly launched HP Latex 300 Printer Series and HP Designjet Z6800 Photo Production Printer. Inca Digital launched the Inca Onset R40i wideformat, flatbed UV printer. The new printer was demonstrated for the first time worldwide by Fujifilm, Inca’s exclusive global distribution partner, at FESPA Digital 2014. The world’s first Inca Onset R40i has gone to imageData Group, one of the largest independent print companies of UK. Focusing on helping customers to become exceptional service providers with imaginative and high-value applications, Canon ran live demonstrations, sharing customer success stories and showcasing print samples onstand that reflected the full breadth of its UV flatbed, cutting systems, roll-fed inkjet, and CrystalPoint imaging capabilities. FESPA Technology Partner, Xaar, presented the magnificent transformative power of its industrial inkjet printheads at the event. It highlighted the new and highly versatile family of Xaar 1002 printheads. SAi headed to FESPA Digital enjoying double-celebration – achieving the milestone of one millionth software sale and being into its 25th Anniversary year. The FESPA Award winners include one Gold, one Silver and three Bronze by Indian players. In an interesting happening, energy assessments carried out by Fogra have confirmed that EFI’s VUTEk® wideformat printers with LED curing show energy reductions of up to 82% when compared with devices that use conventional mercury arc lamps. Important industry events include QuadTech and Muller Martini partnership for supply of Color Control Systems; Muller Martini procuring order for 5 NewsGrip and 10 NewsStack from Malayala Manorama; Sergusaa Solutions appointed as Distributors for SolPrint PRINT MIS solution; quite a few installations by Monotech - NE’s first Konica Minolta bizhub PRESS C8000 at Creative Printers, Nagaland, the first HGDE UV CtP at Charu Graphics, New Delhi, and Konica Minolta C70hc at Gulati’s Studio; VLF Solutions, Delhi, installing North India’s first Kodak large-format CtP Trendsetter Quantum 1600; Epson installing its 100th SurePress Digital Press worldwide; Tetra Pak’s Chakan facility receiving Platinum certification; and Manima representing MACtac range in India. Also of interest should be the economics of metallic labels as Color-Logic licensee Model Graphics demonstrates printing of four SKU labels. Coquetting Technology, BMPA’s Delegation visits Heidelberg, Germany! BMPA takes its 28 members to a study tour – a first-of-its-kind from India to Heidelberg, Germany. The Bombay Master Printers’ Association (BMPA) is celebrating its 60th Anniversary (1954-2014). In collaboration with Heidelberger Druckmaschnien Germany (HDM) and Heidelberg India (HIN) it just organized an exclusive international study tour for its members. In all 28 people signed-up for this first-ofits-kind event from India to HDM. The first day of the tour appeared in the previous issue of PRESSIdeas. The report from second day follows.

Bauer GmbH – Performance in Packaging On the second day, the BMPA team reached the facilities of a HDM customer Bauer GmbH after an early morning 90 kms drive south-east to the town of Pfedelbach. Bauer operates under a tag line of “Performance in Packaging” and services customers in pharmaceutical, cosmetics, chemicals, food and selected technical areas. The firm is a family managed enterprise. Matthias Bauer, Managing Director of the firm escorted around the team. The Bauer’s have been in the print industry for last 50 years and a “folded carton maker” for over 30 years now. In the last 10 years they have also moved forward with digital printing. Bauer has 10 printing units and 2 coating units from HDM in 3B formats and all the bells and whistles of inline Inspection Systems. The entire networking is via the Prinect workflow

which talks in JDF/ JMF. Artpro by Esko is enabled for layout interface. The postpress uses a Diamatrix die-cutting and also has a long line of automatic folder gluer. One of the most fascinating innovations at Bauer’s packaging division was how they strip away a printed-punched sheet electrically. The waste falls off the flat sheet onto a conveyor belt which traverses below the shop floor and leads all the waste directly into suitable containers for disposal purposes. As another value add Bauer offers Supply Chain management solutions with full spectrum logistics in terms of shipping and warehousing. Mathias also entertained a free round of Q&A from the BMPA delegation. A press owner asked him if the firm undertook annual increments in wages and the answer to that was a flat: “Not possible. We undertake increments probably every 2 to 3 years”. For Bauer it has been a bit challenging to make a case for Printing as a career option with the young in their village. They too experience the lure that young workers have towards big and international brands. Though, in Germany, the position of a Printer is very respected.

An impressive visit to B&K Offset Post lunch, they headed out to a very large and interesting commercial offset print shop that straddles in both the domains – sheetfed and web-offset. To reach B&K Offset from Bauer they travelled 170 kms south-west into the region of the famous Black

Iqbal Kherodawala: To all my BMPA- HDM group. Thank you all so much for making it inspiring and fun. When metal from a machine becomes inspiring because friends give it a soul and a heart, any trip becomes fun. I learnt from the various discourses by HDM, more so, from the company which I travelled with.

Forest that borders between Germany and Switzerland. B&K operate a 3-shift system across a 15,000 square metre production area. Per year they produce 43,000 offset plates entirely digitally. 27,000 tons of white paper is processed into various high quality printed products. A print order in 4-5 colours that stacks up to over 80 million A4 pages, 2.5 million accordionfold papers, and 600,000 loose-leaf sheets is within their daily capacity. The firm is accredited for ISO 9001:2008, FSC, PEFC and prints everything via a carbon-neutral process. At B&K, located on a hard-to-forget street ‘Guttenbergstrasse’, the team was welcomed by Joern Kalbhenn, Managing Director, along with his colleagues. His second-incommand, a lady of immense experience, Christina Hofmann, Technical Director, showed them around the sprawling facilities of B&K. She took them to the control centre in B&K where an indigenously developed powerful MIS is available to oversee the company’s production schedules. Basis info obtained from this MIS B&K is able to accept jobs and precisely judge and adhere to delivery schedules. The output from the MIS at B&K is displayed over six, 29” LED Screens that are aligned next to each other in two rows. A clearly labelled colour scheme helps B&K interpret which machine is ready to handle what kind of job, when etc.

printer they are equipped to provide die cutting, creasing and perforating, as inline process. B&K can pride itself as an expert in use of fluorescent colours, inline varnishing and inline die cutting. The print quality control is handled at B&K with Heidelberg Imagecontrol. B&K’s postpress was showed by Hofmann. The team was shown two fully automated cutting machines – PACE, Polar Automatic Cutting Equipment which comes with Autojog AJR-7S that automatically jogs many different materials reaching an output of up to 20,000 sheets per hour. The jogged reams which now make even better blocks are taken by gripper-loading systems and transported onto the highspeed cutter’s rear table. Then Polar Autoturn turning grippers automate the rotation of undivided reams on the machine’s rear table. The Polar Autoturn enables five automatic cuts to be made to every ream without operator intervention. The effectiveness and flexibility of a two-operator system is obtained by a single operator. The cutting material is automatically jogged by Autojog. Gripperloading systems pull it onto the high-speed cutter where it is automatically moved and cut. After cutting is completed, the Transomat E unit automatically stacks the reams on pallets. The group was enchanted by their meaningful visit to B&K enabled by Christina

and her boss Joern. The visitors took photographs of the B&K setup. The study group was highly impressed and wished B&K Offset success for the future as it left.

At the facilities of world leaders in UV systems Anticipating more from the day – as the group was to have just one visit, IST Metz – the group had a free second half of the day. It included a guided tour of the famous Heidelberg Castle, the most visited object in whole of Deutschland. The day started with the group heading for Nuetringen 145 kms away and south of Stuttgart to see the facilities of world leaders in UV systems - IST METZ. The company was founded by Gerhard Metz in 1977. With more than 300 employees and 15 subsidiaries they guarantee on-site customer support. IST has its own sales and service companies in France, the UK, the USA, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, China and Thailand and also work with a world-wide network of distributors and partners. IST’s founder Mr. Metz comes from

Firoze Reshamwala: Faheem / Nitin / Prashant and me are at Frankfurt airport on our way back and believe that this was a truly worthwhile experience and cheers to the BMPA for a great learning trip. Long live Print BMPA.

The pre-press setup comprises of design and CTP. The amazing control centre helps Christina and her team to see production for almost two months at a go. The press facility at B&K produces small and medium quantities with sheet fed. They have Heidelberg SM CD 4 colour, SM CD 1 colour + UV varnish, a XL 5 colour + varnish, another SM XL 8 colour + varnish and a SM XL 10 colour + varnish. As a commercial

East Germany and when ‘The Wall’ came down in 1989, some of Mr. Metz’s friends gifted him a big chunk from the Berlin edifice. The Indian group happened to see this historic relic as well. Thomas Gohl, Sales manager, Sheetfed Applications received the BMPA team warmly at the facilities of IST. He led them to their demo room called the UV Transfer Centre (UVTC). Here they undertake periodic training in UV printing and applications. Thomas made out a presentation for the group which was followed by a demo run of a packaging job on the UVTC’s Heidelberg SM CD 102 - 7 Color + Coater. At this point, JeanPhillippe Fournier, a colleague of Thomas also joined-in. Jean is a person of very lively disposition, having rich industry experience of over 25 years with him. He countered Indian team’s outlook over safety concerns of using UV technology in food and pharma packaging by an example of a dentist using UV exposure for tooth cavities. There were two USP about this Heidelberg SM CD 102 job. First it featured Augmented Reality, incorporated at the bottom of the outer packaging. When scanned with a mobile device using the IST Metz App an animation came up to demonstrate how the packaging could be used as an ambient light source. The second USP was a magical – how the packaging lit up into an actual light source; just as they had seen via the app. Thomas’ presentation was on the wide spectrum of industries that IST works with. They offer solutions to Graphic Arts, Converting Industry and Industrial Applications. As opposed to general Indian print-shops which fall under the former group that encompasses: Offset, Rotogravure, Flexo, Screen printing, Pad printing, Inkjet and Letterpress, IST is significantly diversified. They enjoyed a hearty lunch at IST’s canteen which had special arrangements for the vegetarians amongst the team. The canteen served food to staff priced on basis of weight of the servings in the plate. The trip to IST Metz ended over a demonstration on material reflectivity and stringent quality controls that the company

10

undertakes for all their lamp systems. JeanPhillipe showed the visitors around the facility for glass tube manufacturing and metallic reflector controls that fit into the making IST’s UV systems world famous.

Touring through the famed Heidelberg Castle Bridget Baumann aka BB guided the team on a tour of the famed Heidelberg Castle. They went, one way by the Funicular Train and walked down via a steep gradient. The narrative the got there was thick and vivid about how German kings romanced their British brides and queens. That the Castle proved as a special reason why the Allied Forces did not bomb Heidelberg and the Americans came to make the town their postwar capital within Europe on closure of WWII. In fact the Yankees took such great liking of Heidelberg that they only officially departed from it in 2013. BB also regaled the team with the adventures of Perkeo, a court jester in the Castle, a dwarf by size, who drank nothing except wine, some 18 litres everyday and died accidentally when a doctor had him to drink water with medicine. Prekeo died young he was in his late eighties!!

Pratik Shah: The intergroup sessions were great and I am sure will help all of us to get more insight within our own businesses. Thanks BMPA. Thanks to Heidelberg for the site visits.

Enroute stop at drucken 123 and Polar Mohr As per the set routine, the BMPA team checked out early by 8am and hit the road in their coach that would eventually take them to Frankfurt airport and from where they would head back to Mumbai. Enroute they stopped at the digital print shop – drucken 123 (d123) in Aschaffenburg. d123 is a family owned business operated by the Muellers since 1973. Gerhard Mueller started the company and today his son Markus Mueller, Managing Director, is suitably aided by a team of 9 players, including his wife, mother and father at d123. And when the printer goes on holiday, Markus, who apprenticed along with his printer at another firm, operates d123’s Heidelberg Anicolor. The firm clocks a turnover slightly in excess of a million Euros with its setup that comprises of a Heidelberg Suprasetter, a Linoprint (from Ricoh-Heidelberg) digital press and an Anicolor. d123 has a functional postpress including a Stahl folder to compliment the kind of jobs they undertake. Markus, like all other customers of HDM the team visited on this study tour, is extremely satisfied with Heidelberg’s service and support. Drucken 123 to maintain quality and manage costs purchases the same items packaged by HDM under Saphira label directly from the respective OEMs. When asked why he purchased a Linoprint and not some other digital press, Markus replied quickly: “for peace of mind with one stop solutions from Heidelberg!”

Prashant Shah: It’s been fantastically refreshing and the peephole shows us the potential for creating print that engages and adapts.

From drucken 123 they headed out to the head quarters of Polar Mohr on the outskirts of Frankfurt. Christian Steiner, Sales Director, was waiting in reception to meet customers and weary delegates from Mumbai on the fag-end of their study tour. After enjoying a sumptuous serving at the Polar canteen, they had a bird’s eye view on Polar via a presentation. It was not possible to see the polar factory as their production for the month of March was all done and new fabrication was to commence only in early April. Polar was founded in 1906 as “Adolf Mohr, Maschinenfabrik” (machine factory) developing from a mechanical workshop. The family’s forefathers had been blacksmiths. Since that time the company has not only changed its line of products, but also

developed from a regional supplier to the largest global supplier of high-speed cutters. The company is 100-percent privately owned and operates under the watch of Managing Director Dr. Markus Rall who was earlier responsible for Sales in Asia at manroland and exited from the latter after being member of its Executive Board for Sheetfed division. As per figures shared with the team, by 2010 Polar had sold 1,30,000 cutting machines. Polar’s yearly production comprises of approximately 1,000-1,200 High Speed Cutters, approximately 900 peripheral equipment components; it is represented in 170 countries with over 200 branch offices, having more than 600 service engineers and approximately 2,000 employees. The company has an export share of more than 85% in 2013. Christian Steiner and his team showed the visitors around the demo centre where they witnessed passion, precision and high amount of automation. The team

saw different configurations from Polar’s range of offerings. It saw the marvellous label die-cutters and square cutters. The offerings under label cutting systems were complimented by automated stacking and banding solutions. For this trip and its delegates, the visit to Polar Mohr was symbolic to a workflow at a press. It was the final stage in their journey – they were wheeled out and brought to Frankfurt airport and from there back to Mumbai. It was all over but not without making good associations and fostering camaraderie amongst all in the group. Here’s what some of the more expressive folks in the group had to say over their common What’sapp forum. The BMPA-HDM Exclusive Study tour was forged by BMPA’s Nitin Shah as part of the mandate given to his Task Group on Industrial Visits. The BMPA has expressed gratitude to all the companies their team visited and especially Heidelberg India and Germany.

ITC introduces Opus Card for book printing segment ITC has launched a new substrate, Opus Card, for book printing and publishing applications. The book publishing segment currently uses recycled board with lamination, C2S art boards or packaging folding box boards for book covers.

moderate print requirement up to two-colour on the reverse. In addition, the book cover is processed in multiple stages through printing, cutting, creasing, folding and finally mated to the book block using a variety of binding operations.”

Opus Card was developed considering the properties required for book cover, given the repeated handling of books and their conversion and binding requirement. S N Venkatraman, vice president - marketing at ITC’s paperboards and specialty papers division (PSPD), said, “Book covers require excellent print reproduction on outside and

Venkatraman added, “This calls for a paperboard with good printing properties on reverse, lay flatness throughout the multiple operations and compatibility with various binding operation. Additionally Opus Card delivers high yield providing light-weighting opportunity over other substrates used for book cover.” Available from 200gsm up to 350gsm, Opus Card is suitable for educational books, which dominate the Indian publishing segment. Venkatraman said, “Currently publishers use art board for book cover which matches their aesthetic requirements but lacks on performance parameters. Opus Card as a product carries the features of an art board with the performance parameters of a folding box board.”

It is the only high-bulk product, as the company stated, in the Indian market, which includes folding endurance in its specifications thereby assuring performance during repeated opening and closing. The publishing segment has been very cautious in their approach towards responsible sourcing which has been very well manifested in formation of PREPS (The Publishers database for Responsible Environmental Paper Sourcing), which rates the paper based on their water and carbon footprint. The Opus Card is available with FSC certification. Opus Card, a revolutionary book cover board from ITC PSPD, is endowed with properties which make it an ideal choice for book publishing segment. The product boasts of high folding endurance, back side smoothness and superb binding characteristics. It’s variants are available in a range from 200-350 GSM. Its uses chiefly target the Book Cover, Notebook Cover and Cards segments.

Ludhiana industry bears the brunt of increase in paper prices The increase in prices by the paper mills without any prior information is resulting in hard times for the packaging industry of Ludhiana. Constant increase in the prices of card board, kraft and other kind of papers by the paper mills/dealers, is putting extra burden on printers, making it hard for them to meet earlier commitments with customers. They are bearing the dual brunt from both the purchases as well as finished goods sides. They have to purchase the raw material at ever increasing prices and at the same time

have to sell the finished goods at earlier committed lower prices. In protest of the voluntary increase by paper mills/ dealers, the members of Offset Printers’ Association recently took out a procession. It also went on a token strike on 17th of May in protest of the unnecessary increasing prices of Kraft paper, Paper board and other kind of papers. “With this increase it may not be possible for us to supply the boxes at the earlier agreed rates. We are facing this situation from the

last three months,” Mr. Sanjay Gandhi, Vice President OPA said. The printing and packaging industry is already under immense pressure due to problems like presence of tax free zones in the neighbouring states and import of Chinese goods. The local industry is facing acute shortage of paper and paper board with mills refusing to take fresh orders. Mr. Romi Mancoo pointed out that though all kinds of Paper is declared as essential commodity, yet since January, the prices of cardboard has increased from 30 to 40%. The protesting members’ key demands included: • paper mills to intimate at least 3 months’ prior to any price increase; information to be made public so as to inform the customers well in advance too • mention essential information including, date of manufacture and mill rates etc. of paper on the wrappers • government subsidy on purchase of raw material to save the industry • abolish import duty on paper and paper board to enable imports in the event of shortage in the country

QuadTech partnership with Muller Martini for supply of Color Control Systems QuadTech has announced a partnership with Muller Martini Press Division to provide the QuadTech® Color Control System with SpectralCam, for Muller Martini Alprinta V, Concepta and VSOP web offset presses. The QuadTech partnership now enables Muller Martini customers to not only ensure accurate colour information for the entire web and throughout the print run, but for the first time, automatically measure and control colour on both paper and film. Removing the previous common issues of web movement and substrate corrugation, QuadTech’s system now enables Muller Martini customers to measure precise colour on film and provide exact reproduction of brand and special colours. In turn, this allows customers to enjoy the benefits of a streamlined workflow with faster makereadies and reduced waste. “With 80 percent of Muller Martini presses purchased for printing on films, the ability to control colour on these substrates has been a significant objective for the market,” said Stephan Doppelhammer, Market Manager for Packaging for QuadTech. “We solved the issue by utilizing the key capabilities of our SpectralCam and web stabilizing technologies to compensate for

web deviance, and achieve accurate colour measurement on opaque, translucent and transparent films as well as on paper.” The QuadTech web stabilizer technology achieves this control by momentarily smoothing and flattening the film substrate, at full press speed, for accurate colour measurement. The solution is also available to existing Muller Martini customers as a retrofit option, and typically provides a returnon-investment (ROI) within 1 - 1.5 years. Muller Martini presses are designed to meet the needs of brands who are now demanding shorter-run, faster-turnaround jobs. To differentiate their products and increase sales, these brands increasingly use more complex designs printed onto more expensive transparent and reflective substrates. To provide consistent high quality print, automated press controls are essential in the ability of a printer or converter to ensure adherence to colour standards, and deliver uniform products and reliability in repeat runs from multiple print locations. Prior to the availability of the QuadTech system, Muller Martini customers would typically use a manual process to measure colour on films. This would be done by cutting sections from the web, usually during make-ready, and then at the end at

changeover. As a result, colour defects would often be captured too late, leading to costly production stoppages and substrate waste. With the QuadTech Color Control System with SpectralCam, Muller Martini operators can now utilize a fully automated process for significant reductions in make-ready times and quick and easy, real-time, problem diagnosis. The system also automatically monitors and stores L*a*b* values as well as delta E, density, and dot gain data, for precise print copy and fast, exact setup of repeat jobs. Bernd Sauter, CEO, Muller Martini Press Division says, “We are delighted to partner with QuadTech. We strive to find partners that add value to our offering, and in this case, provide our customers with important quality and productivity improvements for increased profitability and competitiveness. With a QuadTech Color Control System with SpectralCam and web stabilizer installed on a VSOP 850 press in our Print Technology Center in Maulburg, Germany, we look forward to demonstrating these benefits to printers and converters first hand.”

Malayala Manorama to invest in 5 NewsGrip and 10 NewsStack machines from Muller Martini Malayala Manorama, one of India’s leading newspaper publishers, is modernizing and expanding its printing capacity with new generation presses and mailrooms. Five identical direct printing lines from Muller Martini will ensure a speedy production process from the printing press to the ramp at its three plants in Kerala at Kozhikode, Kottayam and Kollam. The “Malayala Manorama” daily with a circulation close to 2.3 million copies, is the flagship of the Indian publishing company with the same name, which also publishes more than 40 periodicals/ magazines, runs television channels, FM radio stations, and internet portals. To enhance its printing capacity, the company, which was established 126 years ago, is installing five double-width Diamond Spirit SA newspaper rotary presses from Mitsubishi with a maximum production speed of 75,000 copies per hour, and printing capacity of 40 broadsheet pages, at its three printing plants at Kozhikode, Kottayam and Kollam in the state of Kerala in south India. “Printed newspapers continue to be the main source of our company’s revenue and that will remain the case for the foreseeable future,” says Chief Editor Mammen Mathew, explaining the major investment.

New generation NewsGrip In order to convey the newspapers smoothly from the printing press to the ramp, Malayala Manorama opted for a total of five identical direct printing lines from Muller Martini for the three sites – two each at Kottayam and Kollam and one at Kozhikode The centerpieces of the state-of-the-art mailroom systems are the latest generation NewsGrip conveyor chains, each with a receiving and delivery station. They not only have a new control system, but also feature new guide sections, are easier to maintain and have a longer economic life-time. In addition, the five lines, which will come on-stream between December 2014 and December 2015, each include two NewsStack compensating stackers, Solema belts, a Sitma bundle film wrapper with cross strapping, manual application of pre-printed top sheets and a control system for bundle production.

Muller Martini stood first. The maximum speed of 90,000 cycles per hour for the mailroom exceeds that of our new printing press by 15,000 copies. That means the mailroom systems are not producing at their limit, which lowers maintenance costs and increases their economic life-time.” In addition to the good after-sales support by Muller Martini India, the feedback given by another Indian Muller Martini customer also spoke well of the new solution, Mr. Mathew states: “I enquired at ‘The Hindu’ about their experiences with the Muller Martini systems there and heard only positive reviews from them.”

Faster than the Printing Press Mr. Mathew explains that Malayala Manorama opted for the solution from Muller Martini, due to financial and technical reasons. “We calculated the total cost of ownership of all the proposals we received and

Malayala Manorama is printed in a daily run of 2.3 million copies.

Mammen Mathew (left), Editor-in-Chief of Malayala Manorama and Roland Bangerter, Regional Director of Muller Martini Asia/Pacific sign the contract for the five direct printing lines.

New Stratasys Dental 3D Printers offer low cost entry Stratasys, a global player in 3D printing and additive manufacturing solutions has introduced high precision wax 3D printers to the dental industry. The Stratasys CrownWorx and FrameWorx 3D Printers allow dental laboratories to produce wax-ups for crowns, bridges and denture frameworks. The machines were unveiled at the LMT Lab Day West Show recently. Stratasys CrownWorx and FrameWorx 3D Printers use wax deposition modelling technology, a jetting technology that is designed to enable consistent quality and a reliable process. The machines produce superior-fitting wax-ups for crown, bridge, coping and denture frameworks via an automated method that can fit easily into a lab’s established workflow, enhancing production capacity. Stratasys CrownWorx and FrameWorx 3D Printers use wax-like materials that produce smooth surface finishes and minimize postprocessing. The materials burn-out with no residue, material shrinkage, cracking or expansion to allow precision casting and reduce costs previously incurred when

finishing gold and other precious metals. Based on resolution, the CrownWorx 3D Printer is ideally suited for creating crown, bridge, and coping wax-ups. CrownWorx uses WDM Technology to jet micro-drops of TrueCast material that builds dental wax-ups, layer-by-layer. The FrameWorx 3D Printer uses WDM Technology to jet micro-drops of TrueCast material onto the build tray to create a denture wax-up layer-by-layer. TrueSupport material is quickly sprayed around the casting material to form a support structure. This enhancement increases production speed for partial denture wax-ups because they require more support material than crowns and bridges. After printing, TrueSupport is dissolved, leaving behind smooth and detailed wax-ups. “These wax 3D printers and new materials are an ideal fit for small labs interested in upgrading dental casting technology,” says Stratasys Director of Global Dental, Avi Cohen. “We believe dental labs adopting these 3D printers will benefit from the

automated and digitized workflows, enabling them to cut costs while producing more restorations. These systems complement our broad system portfolio, which includes large dental 3D printers.” TrueCast is a firm but flexible material that mimics real wax and allows labs to 3D print any dental wax-up with extreme accuracy. It is 100 percent castable for any alloy. TrueSupport is a true wax-blend material that is automatically generated to protect a wax-up during printing. It has a low melting point that produces delicate restorations and is easily removed from each wax-up, after production.

Paper Bind to showcase PUR Binders at Dscoop Asia 2014 -How the long-standing Perfect Binding technique now gives way to the new PUR Binding technology. In today’s dynamic printing landscape, the challenge is to balance productivity and competitive pricing with innovation and customisation. In the last decade or so, the printing industry has seen much innovation and experimentation at the behest of fast evolving printing technology. However, post-print finishing has not kept pace with evolving printing technologies, nor has the industry leveraged available finishing technologies until recently. Thankfully, there has been much innovation in this space lately, and a lot of value is being created in the post-print finishing department.

Adding value with PUR Binding

“Armed with the most cutting-edge range of heavy duty PUR binders in the world, Paper Bind is looking to make inroads into the aggressive Asian market.” - Anuj Mehta, Director, Paper Bind

Key Notes : > PUR-bound materials tend to lie flatter than others bound with different processes. > Paper Bind – enviably installing over 46 PUR Binders in just last 2 years across India. > System 444 and 500 series – marrying small footprints with big performance features.

24

May 2014

Consider book binding for example. The longstanding Perfect Binding technique is now giving way to the new PUR Binding technology (especially for hard cover book binding). PUR-bound materials tend to lie flatter than those which are bound using other processes, and offer a host of other advantages in terms of quality and productivity. They have fewer limitations with respect to paper type and thickness, coating, lamination, presence of ink in spine, etc. PUR binding is revolutionising the production of photobooks and large hard bound volumes like coffee table books, helping printers make a mark by adding value to the print jobs and increasing profitability.

Paper Bind targets aggressive Asian market Paper Bind International Pte Ltd. is playing a vital role in bringing quality and creativity in post-print

finishing up to speed with the strides made in printing technology. Headquartered in Singapore, Paper Bind specialises in high technology post-print finishing equipment like PUR Binders, Cutting, Creasing and Lamination Machines. Paper Bind has an enviable client portfolio in Asia with over 46 PUR Binders installed just in the last 2 years across India and 3 recent installations in South Korea and Dubai. With an eye on the competitive printing industry in Asia, which is lapping up technology to bring quality and innovation to products, Paper Bind is bringing its range of PUR Binding equipment to Dscoop Asia 2014 at Bali. From 12th- 13th June this year, Dscoop will bring together the best of the Asian printing industry with handpicked technology suppliers from across the world.

pressideas/ plc

Like other global markets, Asia too has acknowledged the unmatched features of the quintessential PUR adhesive and has opened its arms for PUR Binders which not only add value to printed books but also save time, effort and energy. Said Anuj Mehta, Director, Paper Bind, “Asian printers can foresee the sea change that PUR Binders will bring to the industry, and to their business process, productivity and profitability. Armed with the most cutting-edge range of heavy duty PUR binders in the world, Paper Bind is looking to make inroads into the aggressive Asian market.” Paper Bind’s System 444 and System 500 series of PUR Binders marry small footprints with big performance features. Powered by the NPS Patented System, which puts these machines years ahead of other similar products, they are configured to minimise the work process, optimise use of adhesive, reduce maintenance and deliver high quality products with minimal manual intervention.

PUR advantages according to a user PUR Binders also has a great advantage of the flexibility to juggle short run jobs with high volume jobs. Brigadier Dhawan, who heads RHI Printographics and works with the best international luxury brands including German automobile giant, has bought a System 444 Plus last year. “The fully automated PUR binder has helped us to take finishing of large brochures and coffee table books to a new level with its flawless and highly consistent output. Binding hard cover books has become extremely simple, quick and hassle-free,” he says. “Also, we are now executing various different types of short run projects along with volume jobs, with equal ease and profitability,” adds Dhawan. With no restriction on design, paper type and thickness, coatings, etc., PUR binders free users to bring design to life without compromise. Another large printing company which has leveraged Paper Bind’s PUR technology is PM Digital. Says Mr. Chellappan, Owner, PM Digital, “Thanks to our PB PUR System 444, we are now experimenting a lot more with design and media, undertaking the toughest jobs without worrying about wastage.” The NPS system uses a closed adhesive pot housed within the chassis itself to

do away with external attachments, and makes the unit more compact and reduces maintenance. The nozzle controls the application of PUR with great precision and minimises wastage. It also relies on a ‘Purge on Demand’ mechanism to keep moisture out, allowing a reuse of the PUR candle up to 25 times, as compared to just 3-5 times in most other machines. This translates into significant saving on adhesive cost, bringing the operating cost almost as low as an EVA based perfect binder – without compromising on the host of benefits that PUR offers. All the PUR Binders offered by Paper Bind have a built-in Automatic Cleaning System which cleans the pot and the nozzles automatically within a minute on the press of a button, saving many hours of frustrating labour. Commenting on their presence at Dscoop Asia, Anuj Mehta said, “We will showcase four compact variants of PUR binders which offer incremental features to suit specialised requirements, like double applicators for increased cycles per hour and automatic end-sheet adapters for hard cover binding.”

One highlight of the top end variant PUR System 500 is that it can toggle both perfect binding PUR binding seamlessly through its smart touch panel. In fact, it can be configured to apply PUR on the spine and EVA hotmelt on the sides in a single pass. Paper Bind is leveraging all this innovation to make the printing business smoother, more profitable and much more creative. With over 1000 participants from the digital print industry at Dscoop Asia 2014, Paper Bind looks forward to connecting with both the end customers and resellers through this platform and spreading its wings in the Asian markets. Paper Bind’s world-class PUR Binders, Creasing Machines, Laminating Systems, Digital Foiling Machines and other complimentary products help create flawless, innovative post-print products. The range of solutions by Paper Bind is manufactured at facilities in Europe, Taiwan, Korea and India for different markets in Asia, Africa and Europe.

Sensational Atmosphere at interpack 2014 Visitor number “cracks” the 175,000 mark.

interpack 2014 was characterised by an outstanding atmosphere prevailing amongst the approx. 2,700 exhibitors and 175,000 visitors in the 19 halls of the completely booked Düsseldorf Exhibition Centre. The signs for this were already apparent at a very early stage of the world’s most important trade fair for the packaging sector and its associated process industries.

SAVE FOOD proved a particularly attentiongrabbing theme at interpack. The initiative of the same name combats food losses and waste and involves such partners as the FAO and the UNEP as well as over 110 members from the industry. The SAVE FOOD Congress showed how the problem of global food losses and waste can be fought across the entire value chain.

Key Notes : > 2,700 exhibitors showcase in the 19 halls of the completely booked Düsseldorf Exhibition Centre. > 66% foreign visitors create new record as visitors from 120 nations travel to Düsseldorf. > The concepts of Innovationparc Packaging and the METAL PACKAGING PLAZA were right on target with the target groups.

26

May 2014

The exhibitors at interpack 2014 met with numerous high-ranking visitors from all over the world already from the start of the trade fair. Many companies experienced such a rush that their stands reached their capacity limits several times. Visitor interest and qualification as well as their willingness to invest is said to have been clearly higher yet again than at the already excellent previous event. A great many exhibitors rated the concrete business deals and sales concluded – part of which were absolutely spontaneous – as particularly positive. Commenting on this, Friedbert Klefenz, President of the interpack Exhibitors’ Advisory Board 2014 and President of Bosch Packaging Technology, said: “We are very satisfied with the quantity and quality of visitors at our stand. The interest taken in our technologies that make a vital contribution to global health and nutrition was enormous. We are pleased

with the high number of leads produced, including many top executives and potential new customers. Similar comments came from other exhibitors. We were equally thrilled by the high number of international visitors and exhibitors – some 75% of the exhibiting enterprises were headquartered outside Germany. With this interpack has confirmed its reputation as the world’s leading trade fair for the packaging sector.” “interpack has provided impressive proof of its leading international role yet again this year. This success confirms our fundamental philosophy of addressing the international industries in their respective markets in a very targeted manner –

already in the run up to the event thereby bringing them to their most important event in Düsseldorf every three years,” explained Werner Matthias Dornscheidt, President & CEO of Messe Düsseldorf. Boasting a percentage of foreign visitors of as much as 66%, interpack 2014 has not only set a new record for itself but also a top rating across all Messe Düsseldorf events.

Visitors from 120 nations in total travelled to Düsseldorf. Kerstin Dietze, Marketing Manager, Sappi shares his interpack 2014 experience, “This year marked the first time we presented our specialty paper segment at the trade fair. We were looking to interpack to provide us with a platform for our innovative doublecapacity specialty paper machine in order to drive development and present our potential. The trade fair with its professional and international audience presents the ideal environment for that! We were able to generate a number of great orders thanks to interested visitors.” The dominating themes at interpack 2014 were resource efficiency for plant and machinery as well as for packaging material usage, quality and safety to guarantee perfect and counterfeit-proof finished products – especially in such touchy segments as Food/Beverage and Pharmaceuticals – as well as diversity

and flexibility for an ever wider range and shorter product cycles. These themes were addressed by a particularly high number of innovations in the halls. However, interpack underscores its importance not only with the sheer multitude of innovations and breadth of its exhibitor ranges but also with especially innovative themes, adds Bernd Jablonowski, Director of interpack & SAVE FOOD: “For a leading international trade fair it is not enough just to rent out exhibition space and offer perfect organisation. Trend themes must be identified, anchored in the concept and finally also driven in a consistent manner. This is the only way to secure thematic leadership in an industry. We have succeeded in doing this very well once again this year. The concepts of both Innovationparc Packaging and the METAL PACKAGING PLAZA were right on target with the target groups.”

Successful second SAVE FOOD Congress SAVE FOOD proved a particularly attentiongrabbing theme at interpack. The initiative of the same name combats food losses and waste and involves such partners as the Food and Agriculture Organisation of United Nations (FAO) and the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) as well as over 110 members from the industry. The SAVE FOOD Congress already started the day before the trade fair. On the first of its

28

May 2014

two themed days it addressed non-profit organisations, which shed some light on the problems from political and social angles. The second half of the event dealt with solutions and Best Practice presented by enterprises. Even more impressively than at the kick-off event three years ago the Congress showed how the problem of global food losses and waste can be fought across the entire value chain. Contributions came from prominent guests and participants such as FAO and UNEP representatives, the Senegalese Minister and musician Youssou N’Dour and the former German Federal Minister Renate Künast in addition to the numerous lectures and

panel discussions that identified practical approaches. In excess of a total of 450 delegates participated in the Congress. When the event drew to a close all parties involved agreed that the objectives of SAVE FOOD can only be achieved with concerted action and pooled expertise as well as the competence of all stakeholders – a fundamental intention of the Initiative. For the entire duration of interpack 2014 Innovationparc Packaging presented solutions and ideas for fighting food losses and waste. FAO, Robert van Otterdijk, Agro-industry officer in the Rural Infrastructure & AgroIndustries Division comments, “We‘ve

developed the SAVE FOOD concept in collaboration with Messe Düsseldorf, and the implementation at the Innovationparc Packaging turned out beautifully. The concept is very effective in reaching the goals we’ve set: The exhibitors at this tent can present their ideas on how to deal with the

issue of food losses and food waste. We’re very happy with the accomplishments of the trade fair and would be delighted to return for the next edition of interpack.”

HP unlocks power of Digital for Packaging at interpack 2014 New HP Indigo and Scitex solutions help converters and manufacturers transition to on-demand, versioned packaging. “After leading the shift to digital in label printing, HP is again driving an unstoppable analogueto-digital transformation in the package printing industry.” - Stephen Nigro, HP

Key Notes : > An $11 billion packaging market opportunity has been traditionally ruled by analogue printing equipment; only 7 % currently printed with digital. > HP Scitex 15000 Corrugated Press for production of corrugated displays and short-run packaging. > An integrated automatic media loader handles up to four media stacks side by side, optimised for use with corrugated sheets without operator intervention.

At interpack 2014, HP announced the expansion of its Graphics Solutions portfolio, opening the door to the corrugated, flexible-packaging and folding-carton markets previously not addressed by digital printing technologies. An $11 billion market opportunity, the packaging industry has been traditionally ruled by analogue printing equipment, with only 7 per cent of these materials currently printed with digital technology. However, shorter product life cycles, demand for faster time to market and a decline in average run length are accelerating the need for digital print. Furthermore, brand owners are seeking the versioning, short runs and reduced environmental impact that are only available with digital printing technology. To help packaging converters and manufacturers take advantage of the digital opportunity, HP introduced the HP Scitex 15000 Corrugated Press for production of corrugated displays and short-run packaging. HP also announced general availability and a new lamination partner for its HP Indigo 20000 and 30000 Digital Presses. “After leading the shift to digital in label printing, HP is again driving an unstoppable analogue-to-digital transformation in the package printing industry,” said Stephen Nigro, senior vice president, Graphics and Inkjet Solutions Business, HP. “With HP solutions, packaging converters can capture the benefits of digital printing to diversify business models, reach new customers and explore new profit areas.”

pressideas/ plc

California-based Emerald Packaging has signed an agreement to install the first HP Indigo 20000 Digital Press for flexible packaging in North America, allowing the company to enter the snack food, candy, health care and cosmetics markets. Netherlands-based Flach Packaging, a producer of folding cartons, labels and disposables, will be an early customer for the HP Indigo 30000 Digital Press, expanding its ability to deliver highquality folding cartons with a quick turnaround.

“We have been evaluating the potential of digital printing technology for a few years as a new way to add value to our customers, which operate in extremely competitive markets,” said Harry Zweers, managing director, DGA Drukkerij Flach BV. “The HP Indigo 30000 is the first digital press that can actually deliver on the specific needs of the folding carton industry. It will allow us to boost production capabilities and drive supply chain efficiencies, and will enable our customers to differentiate themselves.” Extending its end-to-end packaging solution partner network, HP also announced an agreement with Comexi Group, a leading

flexible packaging machinery manufacturer, to develop a dedicated lamination solution. Optimised for the HP Indigo 20000 Digital Press, the Comexi NEXUS L20000 will offer advanced solvent-free lamination, delivering shorter time to market with reduced waste and environmental impact.

HP Inkjet Web Press solutions for growing packaging segment HP also intends to enter the growing packaging segment with its inkjet web press solutions. HP Inkjet Web Presses, built upon proven HP Scalable Thermal Inkjet Technology, have delivered innovation and business transformation in other segments, including publishing, production mail and commercial print. HP is developing new solutions configured for packaging that will help converters produce cost-effective short to medium runs and digital customisation, deliver faster turnaround times and reduce inventory at amazing production speeds of up to 12,000 m2 per hour. HP is working with leading packaging converters to validate the technology in terms of quality, flexibility and economics. As an example, HP is conducting trials with its own consumer printer boxes using this technology.

HP SPS thermal inkjet reaches more package coding applications The HP 45si print cartridge and HP Black 2580 Solvent Ink — developed by HP Specialty Printing Systems’ (SPS) — enable original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and ink partners to deliver primary package coding applications on substrates including flexible films and coated folding cartons. Since introducing the ink at Pack Expo 2013, HP has signed more than 25 OEM partners to test the HP 2580 solvent ink in various applications. Additionally, ink partners are using the HP 45si cartridge to print on a wider range of substrates with their proprietary inks. “With the HP 45si technology and Collins ink, we’ll be able to address the needs of a large installed base that is tired of dealing with the spare parts and service costs of continuous inkjet printers,” said Chris Rogers, director, Sales and Business Development, Collins Inkjet. The expanded HP Graphics Solutions portfolio was on display at interpack 2014 that took place this May.

The Economics of Metallic Labels Consumer brands around the world have discovered the power of metallic labels and packaging. Color-Logic licensee Model Graphics prints four SKU labels.

Long used by luxury brands, recent software developments now make metallics practical for even low-volume products. Today, brands must diff¬erentiate their packaging and labels from that of the competition. And, to address diff¬erent market segments, brands often develop multiple SKUs, creating label or packaging families. Each SKU off¬ers revenue opportunities, but it also creates additional cost. Model Graphics, a Color-Logic licensee printed four SKU labels from a single file. The images were created using the Color-Logic Design Suite (plugins for Adobe Creative Suite). The four diff¬erent labels were printed using just five inks (silver, cyan, magenta, yellow, and black).

In addition to the savings like eliminating three press runs, using the Color-Logic system enables label designers to add special e¬ffects which are unattainable using conventional design methods.

In addition to the savings outlined above, using the Color-Logic system enables the label designer to add special e¬ffects which are unattainable using conventional design methods: • Color-Logic Dimensional-FX, which changes The Color-Logic software which creates the files colour from light to dark and adds a dimensional uses only five inks to produce the following unique e¬ffect, can be created within Illustrator. Standard Register awarded patent for document security feature Standard Register, provider of workflow, content and analytics solutions has been awarded a patent for a chemically reactive security ink that helps mitigate or reveal certain types of document fraud by preventing the chemical alteration or “washing” of secure documents. The chemically reactive ink masks a warning word or message printed on secure documents. When a check, receipt, label or other item is chemically altered or “washed,” the special ink is removed to reveal a hidden word or message. The reactive security ink deters individuals from altering the dollar amount on checks, cash receipts and other secure documents, which could previously

QuadTech solutions at PackPlus 2014 QuadTech has announced its participation at PackPlus 2014, Pragati Maidan, New Delhi, (11-14th June, 2014, Stall No: 12.29). At the show, QuadTech will highlight its latest in-line inspection and colour measurement systems for the packaging market, helping converters to increase productivity, maintain colour consistency and dramatically reduce job setup time and waste. Hemant Desai, QuadTech General Manager, India, comments, “With the Indian packaging industry growing at an annual rate of more than 7 percent, it is an exciting time for the packaging industry in this region. However, much of this growth has come from International brands that demand high quality standards and quick turnaround times.” “With new production challenges, QuadTech’s automated press control technologies provide Indian printers and converters with the tools to ensure workflow efficiencies, but also high quality, fast and consistent output.” For converters, QuadTech’s latest product is the Color Quality Solution, an in-line colour and ink control system, utilizing QuadTech Color Measurement System with SpectralCam. The SpectralCam relays in-line spectral data to ink formulation software from X-Rite, resulting in a standard spectral colour measurement from ink dispensing and throughout all stages of the printing process. This automatically assures colour perfection to the final print and enables converters to simplify one of the most time-consuming and complex stages of make-ready.

Additional capabilities of the QuadTech Inspection System with SpectralCam include 100 percent defect detection along with colorimetric and density measurements at full press speeds. This provides consistent results, minimizes make-ready and reduces waste. Importantly for flexible packaging converters, it can also monitor all web-fed package materials including challenging substrates such as transparent films. The QuadTech Inspection System inspects the entire substrate width, not just sample areas, 100% of the time, for defects throughout printing, rewinding and lamination. Suitable for flexo, gravure and offset printing situations it achieves total defect detection with the press running uninterrupted.

Additional products for waste savings and fast make-ready include QuadTech PDF Verification, for absolute repeatability and perfect quality. This compares a printed sample with the original artwork, identifying issues such as damaged cylinders or plates before they become costly problems. The Web Viewing System is a customizable, fully automated, real-time digital view of the moving web that detects defects for error-free printing and minimal waste. For optimal performance, QuadTech Data Central for Inspection is a central hub for live and historical data that can integrate with existing software. This system monitors and stores information for easy analytics and traceability, enabling management to control productivity. Ultimate waste control is also possible with the QuadTech Waste Management System. This system processes information from the QuadTech Inspection System and Data Central, to enable precise defect removal and the minimization of substrate waste. Mr. Desai concludes, “There is a bright future for all sectors of print in India. QuadTech has a variety of solutions to support both the upcoming opportunities, but also the challenges too. Our focus on print quality and the reduction of substrate waste helps converters to remain competitive whilst ensuring they meet the requirements of International brands. We look forward to meeting visitors at the show, and discussing how we can work with them to increase their profitability.”

HP and Comexi Group introduce first dedicated end-to-end Lamination solution for Digitally printed flexible packaging HP has entered into a strategic agreement with flexible packaging machinery manufacturer Comexi Group to develop a dedicated lamination solution optimised for the HP Indigo 20000 Digital Press.

changing the colours, images and language. Additionally, the press’s 762-mm/30-inch width and ability to print on a wide variety of substrates and film (from 10 to 250 micron) gives converters market versatility.

Lamination is a major part of the flexible packaging conversion process. Current solutions have long set-up cycles for each job, and converters need to wait several days for complete curing and delivery, which creates a bottleneck and impacts time-tomarket.

Going from computer to press without producing plates helps increase speed to market, improve production flexibility and reduce packaging costs for short runs. HP Indigo’s digital, zero-setup process minimises waste, translating into significant cost and time savings. On-demand digital printing also reduces waste and overstocking throughout the supply chain, allowing converters to offer their end customers more sustainable packaging solutions.

Inca Digital and Fujifilm launch the Inca Onset R40i UV flatbed printer New wide-format flatbed Onset model combines quality with speed to deliver 80 beds/hour.

Inca Digital launched the Inca Onset R40i wideformat, flatbed UV printer. The new printer was demonstrated for the first time worldwide by Fujifilm, Inca’s exclusive global distribution partner, at FESPA Digital 2014. The Onset R40i is the latest addition to the Inca Onset series and, using Fujifilm Dimatix Spectra printheads, delivers a 14 picolitre (pL) drop size and a genuine 400 sqm/hr productivity. Based on the dynamic Onset Scaleable Architecture platform, the new Onset is available with a variety of colour options (CMYK, Lm, Lc and white), with customers being able to modify their machine from a 4-colour configuration to 5, 6 or 7 colours (up to 8 ink channels – 2 for white ink). As their business grows, customers can adapt other elements of the printer, such as the UV curing lamps, automation, speed modes, electronics and software, to suit their evolving production needs.

“The new Inca Onset R40i delivers the ideal combination of speed and quality for companies producing a mix of fast turnaround retail graphics for distance viewing but also wishing to produce high-quality graphics for short-distance viewing.” Heather Kendle

A maximum output resolution of 1200dpi can be produced on media up to 3.14m x 1.6m (123.6 inches x 63 inches) and up to 50mm (2in) thick at the rate of up to 80 full-bed sheets per hour. A choice of unidirectional, bi-directional and super high-quality print modes can be selected depending on the specific job requirements. This new Onset also supports Inca’s Print Run Controller software for companies requiring variable data printing capability.

Choice of automation The Onset R40i is compatible with Inca’s flexible automation system which gives customers the choice to operate manually, or with semi or threequarter automation. At FESPA Digital visitors had the opportunity to see the Onset R40i running with a

new full automation system, as a result of integration between a Hostert automated feeder and alignment table and Inca’s proprietary material loader and take off system. This combination allows for continuous printing onto a variety of material types and sizes commonly used within the display, POP and sign markets. Thanks to the continuous feed and print, users can reduce labour costs and achieve increased productivity and efficiency. “The new Inca Onset R40i delivers the ideal combination of speed and quality for companies producing a mix of fast turnaround retail graphics for distance viewing but also wishing to produce highquality graphics for short-distance viewing,” says Heather Kendle, Inca Digital’s Director of Marketing and Product Management. “The beauty of the Onset Series, which now features a choice of 12 different models and three different handling systems, is that print companies can not only pick exactly the right Onset with the right combination of productivity,

quality and ink options for their business, but also evolve their machine to meet their changing needs whenever they wish.”

World’s first Inca Onset R40i goes to imageData One of the UK’s largest independent print companies, imageData Group, has placed an order for the world’s first Inca Onset R40i, recently debuting at the FESPA Digital 2014. imageData Group was on a look out for a leading edge technology to support its business growth and customers’ needs and was very impressed by the performance of this latest addition to the Inca Onset series. David Danforth, CEO at imageData Group, explains: “We boast a long-standing relationship with Fujifilm & Inca, who have been supplying us with excellent inks and high-end digital printing devices for many

years. In 2004 we were the UK beta site for Inca’s Columbia Turbo flatbed printer, ultimately installing two of these devices, which was followed by an investment in an Onset S70 in 2007.” He continues: “Over the last year, we have reviewed the market in search of an exceptionally productive and advanced flatbed printer to join our line-up of large format digital machines at Howden, East Yorkshire. The new Onset R40i we saw on Fujifilm’s stand at FESPA Digital caught our eye due to its perfect mix of features.” The print quality and production flexibility offered by the new machine were key in the company’s decision-making process. David highlights: “We work with a wide variety of clients across the public, corporate, retail and allied sectors, and are committed to guaranteeing the most efficient, high quality

range of services. The Onset R40i boasts productivity of 400m2/hour, a maximum output resolution of 1200dpi, and the ability to handle media up to 50mm thick. We are confident that this combination of features will raise the bar in terms of our productivity and help us to manage a wide variety of new jobs.” imageData Group has invested in the Onset R40i printer together with the Inca 3/4 automatic material handling system, which provides superb accuracy and flexibility across the complete range of materials used in the POP arena. David concludes: “We believe that the integration between the device and Inca’s proprietary material loader will enable us to print non-stop onto a variety of substrates used in the POP & display markets, improving our efficiency and enabling us to be more competitive.”

Fogra Testing proves 82% energy savings, boosting green benefits of EFI’s VUTEk LED Printers Energy assessments carried out by Fogra have confirmed that EFI’s VUTEk® wideformat printers with LED curing show energy reductions of up to 82% when compared with devices that use conventional mercury arc lamps. Even in print-ready mode, the company’s LX printers with “cool curing” LEDs are now shown to save up to 77% in electricity usage, simply because the LEDs are off, unlike mercury arc lamps that still consume power when the machine is idle between jobs. The calculations of Fogra’s Energy Efficiency Project (“Energy efficiency of large and small format printing systems”) have demonstrated that users can save around €16,000 (approximately $21,900 U.S.) every year on power consumption, an important factor for businesses pricing up jobs on both rigid and flexible materials. Fogra’s comparisons with digital printers using conventional curing lamps showed that the former used 1.18kW/m2 while EFI’s VUTEk GS3250LX Pro used only 0.22 kW/ m2. This impressive scoring adds to the functional flexibility incorporated into EFI’s LED-curing printers, with their ability to work with thinner and more sensitive materials, as well as lower cost media. “EFI has pioneered the use of LEDs in its growing series of production-class wideformat printers with ‘cool curing,’ and Fogra’s analysis provides conclusive evidence of

46

the additional savings and green benefits that can be attained by businesses investing in our technology,” stated Scott Schinlever, senior vice president and general manager of EFI Inkjet Solutions. “Although we thoroughly tested and assessed the lower energy usage when we originally developed these printers, the results from Fogra now provide third-party and impartial confirmation of the significantly reduced power requirements. While others claim green benefits, their use of heat to cure and having thicker substrates runs counter to being green.” The evaluations carried out employed Fogra’s “Image Quality Test Suite” for printing, with typical production and stand-by/print ready modes being used. The conditions were configured to emulate both highest productivity and greatest quality, incorporating the relevant machine combinations for accurate results. “I would like to thank EFI for the great support during our research project. We found out that the used print mode heavily contributes to the final energy efficiency (m2/ kWh). However, when using agreed upon parameters, as in our developed guideline, the significant savings of LED-based curing can be demonstrated,” said Andreas Kraushaar, head of Fogra’s Prepress Technology Department.

The objective of Fogra Forschungsgesellschaft Druck e.V. (Fogra Graphic Technology Research Association) is to promote print engineering and its futureoriented technologies in the fields of research and development, and to enable the printing industry to utilize the results of this activity. To this end the association maintains its own institute, with about 60 staff members including engineers, chemists and physicists. EFI’s LED curing is incorporated into its VUTEk 2m GS2000LX and 3.2m GS3250LX wide-format combination flat-bed and roll-fed printers, and its 3.2m VUTEk GS3250LXr dedicated roll-to-roll version. This growing series also offers full grayscale capabilities that generate greater ink savings, and all guarantee greener results that require less energy, with no VOCs and the ability to print direct to environmentally friendly materials. The company’s Jetrion® 4950LX narrow-web label press also uses LED technology to enable the use of heat sensitive and specialty stocks. At Fespa Munich, EFI showcased an entry-level LED-curing printer for the first time in Europe with the new EFI H1625. Fespa visitors could see EFI’s leading range of LED-curing printers at the company’s exhibit.

Canon at FESPA Digital 2014 Helps visitors push the boundaries of wide format print with an extended line-up. Productivity and innovation-led business growth were the hot topics on the Canon stand at FESPA Digital 2014 as the company demonstrated how both new and existing technology can help print service providers (PSPs) push the boundaries of wide format digital print. Focusing on helping customers to become exceptional service providers with imaginative and high-value applications, Canon ran live demonstrations, sharing customer success stories and showcasing print samples onstand that reflected the full breadth of its UV flatbed, cutting systems, roll-fed inkjet, and CrystalPoint imaging capabilities. Making its debut appearance on stand – and depicting the company’s continued commitment to enhancing technology to meet the diverse needs of customers – was the Océ Arizona 6170 XTS, part of the new high volume Océ Arizona 6100 Series. “We want to inspire print service providers to broaden their perceptions of what is possible with wide format print, so FESPA Digital is the perfect way to not only talk to them about new technologies we have developed to help them meet their business challenges, but also to demonstrate the true potential of the Canon technology that they may already be using,” said Pierre-Olivier Esteban, Marketing Director of Technical Document Systems (TDS) and Display Graphic Systems (DGS), Canon Europe.

Growing application diversity with existing technology Application examples and case studies onstand included bespoke wallpaper, printed laminate flooring, printed stained glass, lenticular printing, weather-resistant digital map printing and printing on wood for indoor decorative features.

“New and imaginative applications are always being discovered by our customers and we are demonstrating many of these at the show using our full wide format range to inspire visitors to look beyond their core offering and discover opportunities to diversify and grow their business,” added Esteban. In addition to live demonstrations and physical examples of diverse applications, visitors could also see the new Canon ‘Look Book’, detailing a wealth of applications produced on the award winning Océ Arizona range. “We firmly believe that if you can imagine something in print then it is almost always possible to produce it. That’s why we continue to develop and improve our range and also help to ignite the imagination of our customers,” said Esteban. “While it is up to PSPs to talk to their customers about the exciting applications they can offer, it is up to us as manufacturers to demonstrate what the technology can truly deliver to help them do this more effectively.” Technologies running live demonstrations on stand included the Océ ColorWave 900 demonstrating raw speeds of up to 1,000m² per hour, the Océ ColorWave 650 PP with Océ CrystalPoint imaging technology, the Océ ProCut digital flatbed cutter delivering exceptional cut quality, versatility and productivity for display graphic applications, and the imagePROGRAF iPF9400 offering the finest results in production, photographic and fine art applications.

Making Océ Arizona technology accessible to the high volume market Comprising the 6-colour Océ Arizona 6160

XTS and the 7-colour Océ Arizona 6170 XTS, the new Arizona 6100 Series focuses on pure productivity – aimed at sign and display customers who produce more than 30,000m² of printed rigid media per year. Designed as a dedicated flatbed system, it produces inkjet print output at speeds of up to 155m2 per hour and features an extra-large 2.5m x 3.05m vacuum table. “With the new Arizona 6100 Series, we are able to bring the print quality and application versatility that have become synonymous with the existing Arizona models to the high volume rigid printing market,” said Esteban. “Offering the ability to print on odd-shaped, pre-cut rigid media and the potential to print high value, multi-layer applications, doublesided prints and achieve edge to edge flawless prints, are just further examples of how we are developing our range to achieve greater versatility and productivity for specific industry needs.” Canon is now ideally positioned to help PSPs extend their service offering following the full integration of Océ’s expertise and technology. From printers and software to substrates and service support, Canon demonstrated its prowess as a single source wide format business partner at FESPA Digital, and the range continues to grow. “FESPA Digital is a great opportunity to get under the skin of the wide format market and understand what makes customers tick and also what motivates them in business. This form of interaction is critical to us in developing and refining our technology. Not only do events such as FESPA enable us to showcase our latest innovations and discuss growth opportunities for existing and prospective customers, they are also an opportunity to once again speak to the industry to find out what they think is next on the horizon,” said Esteban. FESPA Digital visitors could meet Canon customer Marco de Wert of Sanders Group discussing how wide format printing with Canon technology has transformed his business in the Digital Conference Theatre on 22 May.
