FROM THE EDITORS’ DESK Dear Readers, The industry is buoyant about the current government’s ‘Make In India’ slogan, which chiefly signifies supporting manufacturing in the country. Indian manufacturers are encouraged to produce more efficiently with able government support. India is proud of its manufacturing sector which is lined up of thousands of players and of course hundreds who are on a par with any international standard. There are still many Indian players who have made a mark for themselves on the international platform. One such player we are talking of in this issue is Autoprint. Autoprint is a household name for print fraternity. The company has a long list of coveted milestones; the recent being rolling out of 10000th machine from its manufacturing facility. The machine has gone to Jivaneep Concepts. To know more about Autoprint just go through our cover story on this major. Our key story is on Rave Scans, another leading printing and packaging company in India with a client base of over 400. The company recently announced installation of country’s first Heidelberg Speedmaster CD 102 6-colour plus coater UV combination press with Foilstar. The Speedmaster CD 102 is the all-rounder for a wide variety of applications and the best-selling press series by far in its class. The reasons for this are clear – exceptional and, above all, stable print quality throughout the run, straightforward operation, excellent stability in operation, and outstanding net productivity. The company has plans to boost its capacity in packaging, security printing and specialized finishing. One recent major investment is by Meghdoot, one of the largest corrugated box manufacturers in India. The investment has been made in advanced equipment at its plants in Pantnagar and Delhi. It is the first company in the country to install and integrate an HP Scitex FB10000 digital printer and a complete Esko POP display design and manufacturing solution. Esko is celebrating 50 years of Kongsberg innovation – the company’s flagship digital finishing systems with thousands of installations around the globe. The product has played a significant role to enable the company evolve from a manufacturer of drafting tables into a leading supplier of digital finishing systems. Celebrations are also going on at UPM Raflatac, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of self-adhesive label stock – the company is celebrating 40 years’ history as a company. Apart from our regulars, find the important news about partnerships, awards, launches, exhibitions and much more in this May 2015 issue of PRESSIdeas. Autoprint: One top ‘Made in India’ brand PRESSIdeas had an exclusive interview with Autoprint’s Director, Mr. C.N. Ashok on the occasion of the company’s recent milestone of rolling out the 10,000th machine.

Autoprint is at the top of the segment Press manufacturer of India. Steady growth is just part of the success story of the company which has been at the forefront of innovation in the printing industry. The growth it achieved previous fiscal year is slightly up (5%) as compared to the previous year. Mr. C.N.Ashok, Director, Autoprint, is not the man who sits on his laurels, he is not happy with this growth figure and looks forward to boost this figure. He says, “Our performance in the fiscal year gone by was slightly better than the earlier year. We have grown by 5% which is better than that in other industries. There are positive signs in the industry with the new government coming in at the centre, but these signs are yet to translate into business growth.”

“The milestone of rolling out 10000 machines is itself a proof that an Indian manufacturer was given chance 10000 times to sell a machine. That itself is a “make in India” initiative from us. We have effectively blocked 10000 machines’ import from abroad. The PM’s statement that ‘make in India’ will be given priority really excites all of us.” – C.N. Ashok, Autoprint.

Key Notes : > Rolling out 10000 machines – a “make in India” initiative from Autoprint. > Autoprint Dion 450 – ROI much faster than that of a Digital press. > Lot of expectations from the recently launched Checkmate 50 inspection system.

He told that they have identified areas where they could have done better. “One such area is exports where we have de-grown over the previous year,” he recognizes. He cites their African region focus as the main reason for this. “The region remained affected by the ‘Ebola’ virus scare for quite few months which restricted business engagements and consequently affected our export business,” explains Ashok.

Rolling out the 10000th machine Autoprint faced many challenges during its long success journey. Ashok considers the challenge of foreign collaborations as one of their key challenges. One of the challenges that we faced was with

foreign collaborations. “During this journey we have always felt that a few more collaborations could have accelerated our growth faster. We first had the collaboration with Setmaster, UK. But subsequently they had financial problems and this terminated our collaboration. Then we had collaboration with Midas of Spain to make label machines. We did make and install seven Alca Gamut label presses with this collaboration. The market at this point of time was looking for the next generation shaftless presses. The third generation machines of Midas, using shaftless technology could not be manufactured in India since they were not cost effective. Eventually we had to call off this collaboration as well,” relates Ashok. “We are looking at collaborations more seriously and pursuing with some key players in the industry. We are evaluating these more thoroughly before we enter into any understanding,” he adds. Autoprint plans to collaborate for manufacturing of those products which are specifically demanded by their customers. The products will be decided based on the constant interaction that the company has with the customers. It is this type of diligence that has enabled Autoprint achieve numerous milestones in the industry. The recent being the rolling out of 10000th machine from its plant.

“Make in India” helping Indian manufacturing business The focus of ‘Make In India’ campaign, coming from the Prime Minister itself is a big encouragement for the Indian manufacturers. On this, Ashok says, “The industry is now waiting to see what actions are being taken by the government to make this initiative into a reality. If they really take some tangible follow through actions we are sure this will be a big boost to the industry. As regards

Autoprint, I would say that the milestone of rolling out 10000 machines is itself a proof that an Indian manufacturer was given chance 10000 times to sell a machine. That itself is a “make in India” initiative from us, without any support from the PM’s focus. We have effectively blocked 10000 machines to be imported from abroad. The PM’s statement that ‘make in India’ will be given priority really excites all of us.”

Jivaneep Concepts: Autoprint for ease, quality and service Jivaneep Concepts is the Autoprint customer who got their 10000th machine. Mr. Usman Khan, Jivaneep Concepts shares his Autoprint experience with PRESSIdeas in an exclusive interview. PRESSIdeas: How long have you been

with Autoprint machines is the key reason. We have seen in day-to-day operations that there are few machines which can match Autoprint machines in simplicity, user-friendliness, durability and quality in a single package. Our operators have been extremely happy with the simple operation of the machine. Even a novice can operate Autoprint Machines after just a week’s training. Other options were either to go for some Chinese brand or choose from available second-hand machines. After considering every possible option we found Autoprint Dion four-colour was just right machine for our requirement.

to quality, service and management.

Advantage Indian Locally manufactured machines have unique advantages over foreign made products, especially when the market competition is international. “Lower manufacturing cost is the major advantage Indian manufacturers enjoy when they compete overseas; we have advantage even over Chinese competitors. Moreover Indian made products enjoy more customer acceptance in terms of quality over products manufactured in other countries,” says Ashok.

Digital Printing – segment Autoprint caters to the Digital Printing segment with its Variable Data Printing machines that use Inkjet technology. “We already have the transport mechanism for Digital Printing and we can put any heads on this mechanism. Thus we are already into the Digital space through Inkjet. We are not in the Toner technology since we believe that the future in Digital is Inkjet. Apart from the low cost of the consumable being low, lots of development is taking place in inkjet technology. Ashok is not much interested in the Toner technology. “The Toner technology has been in existence for almost a decade and many developments have taken place in this space. Despite this the per-copy cost is high for Toner based outputs. We believe, for this very reason, Inkjet will overtake toner based print production in the days to come. Though there will be developments in Toner technology also, the excitement will be in the Inkjet space, since it offers various

Autoprint Stragegic Business Units Autoprint has two verticals – SBU 1 and SBU 2. In SBU 1 which is for printing units, we are focusing on Dion and non-woven bag printing. Our mission is to install minimum one Dion 450 four color press in each of the 475 active districts (out of 676 districts in the country) across the country within the next five years. That’s around 100 machines each year. As regards non woven printing machines, we sold 65 machines last year and this year we target to install 100 machines. We believe these numbers are achievable and our whole team is working towards to achieve this.

possibilities. So the future is for Inkjet,” he avers.

short run jobs from 200 to 5000, a Dion 450 is the most preferred press. All our customers are very happy,” declares Ashok.

Autoprint Dion 450 Autoprint Dion 450 offers low cost of ownership and therefore is an attractive possibility for Digital printers to expand or shift towards Offset. According to Ashok, there is already a huge shift happening, especially in smaller towns, where many Digital printers are going for Autoprint Dion 450 for their second machine. They find the ROI in an Autoprint Dion 450 is much faster than that of a Digital press. The key feature of this press is easy uploading of plate. This reduces the output time considerably. Printers are finding this machine attractive for various specific applications like, short run labels for packaging, book wrappers etc. “For any

Being a company based out of Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, Autoprint is strong in the south though the western region has the top presence. “We have two SBUs (Strategic Business Units) - a) Commercial printing -single colour, four colour and non-woven and b) Packaging. For packaging, we are strong in West, followed by North and South. For the commercial printing we are strong in south followed by others,” reveals Ashok. To improve business in the eastern region, they have appointed a new agent there. They are also focusing on increasing their presence in this region through other endeavour like exhibitions and road shows.

For SBU 2- package segment- we have three great products a) the online inspection machine-Autoprint Checkmate 50 b) Autoprint Repetto 65 Die Punching machine and c) Autoprint Reckoner VDP65 - Variable Data printing machine. The need for inspection of printed products is becoming a necessity and at present all over the country inspection is done manually. Now the time has come to automate this process. To meet this need we have launched the Checkmate 50. For die punching, the Chinese or even companies like Bobst offers only machines of size 28” x 40”. We are the only company to offer a die punching machine for size 19” x 26”. No other manufacturer across the globe, excepting one in Europe, offer this size automated die punching machine at such a competitive price. Our focus is to replace all the manual die punching machines of this size with our automated machine.

Competition and the small and medium size machine niche Autoprint’s key competition is from the second-hand imports in both local as well as overseas markets. “For export markets we are the only company offering quality machines of small and medium sizes. The Chinese machines are of bigger sizes. The Chinese have large volume business advantage in bigger machines’ segment. It’s not same in the smaller size segment, therefore, these machines don’t have much cost advantage. We are at a dominating position in the small and medium size machines’ segment. We see a lot of scope

in the export markets. We want to reach a position similar to what Maruti holds with Indian car customers,” perceives Ashok.

Autoprint – faster ROI in the least time “I don’t believe in the “lifetime investment” concept. Rather, any one investing in an Autoprint machine should earn two to three times their investment in a span of four years. We focus on “faster ROI in the least time”. Life time investment is an irrelevant concept in a set up where technology keeps changing very fast. Our machines will run reliably for a long period of time but the market should be there for a long time to accept such products,” says Ashok. Autoprint helps out the customer to achieve an ROI of less than four years through various initiatives. Explaining further, Ashok says, “Our primary focus is to help our customer to get his investment at the earliest possible time. Right from the time a customer approach us for a machine, we interact with him, understand his needs and offer solutions including solutions to market his end products, so that he succeeds. Wherever we find the potentials are less for the products, we don’t sell our machines to such customers. Rather we caution him to stay away.”

The RRCE Concept Ashok strongly vouches for the need for perpetual interaction between machinery manufacturers and printers. “The attitude and capacity for respectful listening will change the entire industry in a great manner. It should happen in a bigger way. Exchange of ideas should happen much faster through forums, group discussions. Customer driven product development can happen only with such exchange of ideas. A particular region’s success can be replicated in another with sharing of experiences. Our recent experience with a customer from Jordan is a classic example for this approach,” emphasises Ashok.

Autoprint CNC Centre

the current process and we create a market. If all the four parameters are answered then the RRCE concept will become a Blue Ocean,” he explains. Autoprint is one of the few top Indian printing machinery manufacturers. “The milestone translates to 1.5 machines per day since the day of establishment. We are very excited about this achievement,” beams Ashok.

Brand Creation Autoprint invests a lot in brand creation and consequently, it is a strong brand of Indian Graphic Arts industry. With a strong customer data base and connection it is present all over the country – from metros to tier 2, 3 and 4 cities. It is present in more than 20% of the Indian PIN codes. With around

30 people in the customer oriented R&D department enable Autoprint to roll out more and more new products regularly. “Everything that we do is to satisfy our customer. We identify their problem and work towards an innovative solution at an affordable price. That’s our motto too. An ‘affordable price’ means an ROI of three to four years. If this is acceptable to the customer, then our R&D starts working on the project. So the route we follow is – identifying the Customer’s problem – find an innovative technology – affordable solution. That’s where we are better off than manufacturers in developed economies, since our solutions are highly affordable. This mandate is with our R&D and they look at is very seriously,” says Ashok.

“This is an application of our RRCE concept. This is the Blue Ocean technology. RR means raise and reduce. Anything we do using this concept, we raise the quality and/ or reduce something being done. C means creating a market and E means eliminating something as a process. We put RR in the centre, we raise the quality, eliminate something from

Affordable Checkmate Ashok is very confident about the recently launched Checkmate 50 inspection system. He expects that it will give a tough competition to manufacturers. “We are very confident that this product will go places. For the Checkmate 50 we have synergized our strengths. The vision support is from an external company who are very strong in this line of activity. Autoprint has provided the mechanical and conveyor systems – a field where we are very strong. Both are Indian companies both have an excellent track record. This synergy is working magic.” The government is adding more and more security features to be included on the printed carton. These features cannot be manually inspected. Automated inspection solutions are the requirement of the day. With the huge spurious market in India in various industries, which the government is

Currently Autoprint has tied up with Kompack of USA – a manufacturer of Dampening systems. Kompack incorporates Autoprint base UV machine in its patented UV coating system and sells it in the US market. This association has been there for over ten years. They have over 300 machines successfully running there. “This year we hope to ship around 36 machines and we are working on a few other technological tie ups which will be announced later,” says Ashok. After recent Jammu & Kashmir floods, Autoprint sent its service engineers to the affected customers free of cost and helped them get back to business.

Koenig & Bauer first-quarter report 2015: Orders up 27% In the words of president and CEO Claus Bolza-Schünemann, Koenig & Bauer’s (KBA) financial figures for the first quarter of 2015 still paint “a differentiated picture”. Bucking the industry trend, the press manufacturer’s group order intake of euro306.7m was 27% up on the previous year and order backlog was around euro130m higher than at the beginning of the quarter. In contrast, there is still some catching up to do in terms of sales and earnings. At euro177.3m group sales were down 16.9% on the prior-year figure. Given the low sales volume this quarter due to the delivery structure and capacity underutilisation at KBA’s German web press sites which have now been rescaled, group earnings before taxes (EBT) of –euro17.7m were also lower than the prior-year figure of –euro12.1m. Nevertheless, the company’s management has affirmed its forecast for 2015. Bolza-Schünemann: “KBA will generate far more than 50% of group sales in the second-half of the year with corresponding positive effects on earnings. In light of the solid number of new projects I am confident that we will be able to achieve our group sales target for 2015 of over euro1bn with a better EBT than in 2014 and an EBT margin of up to 2% of sales in spite of a weaker Q1 and Q2 this year.”

Lower sales and product mix hit this quarter’s results At euro546.7m group order backlog on 31 March was almost euro130m higher than at the beginning of the year. Compared to the

prior-year quarter low sales, the product mix and capacity underutilisation which has yet to be completely eliminated in the Digital & Web segment hit earnings. The group’s gross profit margin fell from 25.4% to 20.6% and EBIT from –euro10.2m to –euro16.2m. A net interest loss of euro1.5m led to a group pre-tax loss (EBT) this quarter of euro17.7m, compared to –euro12.1m the previous year. After deducting taxes, group results on 31 March stood at –euro16.9m (2014: –euro14m) and earnings per share came to –euro1.01 (2014: –euro0.85). At euro174.7m order intake after three months in Sheetfed Solutions, KBA’s largest segment, was up 30.5% on 2014, while sales of euro109.8m remained slightly below the prior-year figure of euro111.1m. The book-tobill ratio triggered a growth in order backlog of 26.7% to euro246.6m. This segment’s loss of euro2.7m was somewhat higher than the prior year (2014: –euro1.6m) due to the unfavourable product mix and expenses associated with restructuring the international sales network. In the course of the year earnings will also gradually improve in line with the increase in the number of deliveries. The volume of new orders in the Digital & Web Solutions segment rose by 5.7% to euro27.9m, up from euro26.4m in 2014. At euro13.3m revenue fell short of the previous year’s figure of euro41.5m which made a major contribution to the segment’s loss of euro8.7m. However, savings resulting from

the extensive adjustment to capacities and upcoming deliveries will have a positive impact on sales and earnings in the following quarters. Moreover, promising strategic opportunities have opened up for this new segment through addressing new business fields for KBA RotaJET presses and the alliance with HP in the digital corrugated printing market. Orders in the Special Solutions segment were up 31% to euro117.4m. At euro63.2m sales this quarter were 8.1% lower than in 2014 (euro68.8m). Operating profit in this segment stood at euro1.2m compared to the prior-year figure of euro4m. KBA anticipates a significant rise in both figures in the third and fourth quarter in particular with the delivery of larger security press orders.

Fewer sales in Europe – more in North America Compared to 2014 an euro8.8m decrease in domestic sales to euro35.3m raised the export level from 79.3% to 80.1%. Deliveries to other parts of Europe fell to euro46.3m. This region’s contribution to group sales was below average at 26.1% (2014: 31%). Business in North America jumped from euro24.4m to euro30.2m, or 11.4% to 17% of the total. The proportion generated by Asia and the Pacific stood at 28.5%. Given the dip in demand in China the total sales volume of euro50.5m in this region was less than the previous year (euro64.9m). At euro15m revenue attributable to Latin America and Africa came to 8.5% of group sales. At the end of March 2015 there were 5,321 employees on the KBA group payroll, 916 fewer than twelve months earlier (6,237). Excluding apprentices, trainees, employees exempted from their duties and staff on phased retirement schemes the group workforce sank to 4,711. This total is expected to fall to around 4,500 following the completion of the group restructuring programme in 2016. At 6.1% KBA’s training rate remains remarkable. Today sheetfed offset presses and related systems generate over 50% of the group’s sales. Packaging printers dominate the business of KBA-Sheetfed Solutions and the majority of companies in the Special Solutions segment.

Komori at Print China 2015 At Print China 2015 held in China at Guangdong Modern International Exhibition Center in Dongguan, Komori exhibited its range of machines.

Komori demonstrations at Print China 2015 were separated into Package and Commercial Printing using images that assume an aggregated order from an art museum called the “Lithrone Museum.”

Commercial Printing Lithrone G37 (H-UV-equipped four-color 37-inch sheetfed offset press GL-437 + H-UV) The show marked the debut of the Lithrone G37, a high performance machine in 37-inch format. Through stable operation achieved by H-UV printing and coordination of various automatic devices at the 15,000 sph maximum printing speed, this press offers the power to address needs such as short turnaround times, a diverse work mix, short runs and low cost in publishing and commercial printing. In the demonstration, the Lithrone G37 printed the museum’s flyers/postcards using Komori’s standard K-Supply H-UV ink. Many visitors took the just printed samples and were astounded by H-UV’s instant curing. In addition, the tablet-ready K-Station 4 Printing Task Control Software was introduced in the demonstration; its ability to perform progress management simply with a tablet computer was seen with deep interest.

Commitment to the printed newspaper in a multimedia age Aschendorff Druckzentrum in Münster orders KBA Commander CL.

“The decision in favour of the KBA Commander CL is the result of an extensive selection process which focused on the factors efficiency, economy and quality. The KBA web press featuring a first-class inking unit with three forme rollers impressively demonstrated its outstanding potential in terms of print quality during a printing test.” – Gerhard Dust

The printing plant belonging to media group Aschendorff in Münster, Germany, has been in operation for over 250 years. An important new chapter is set to begin there in spring 2016 with the production start-up of a Commander CL ordered recently from Koenig & Bauer (KBA). The highly automated and flexible 32-page web press will join three presses from another manufacturer and will predominantly print small-circulation newspapers at night given its significantly shorter makeready times thanks to automated plate changing. Its high print quality and performance potential with up to 50,000 full-colour newspapers per hour will be used to produce high-quality print products with high circulations during the day. The compact four-high press line with two reelstands, two H-type printing towers and a folder will be engineered for a maximum web width of 1,400mm (55.1in) and a cylinder circumference of 1,200mm (47.2in). KBA has sold 13 of these presses with a total of 45 printing towers to Germany, France, China and the USA since its market launch four years ago. It is the most popular newspaper press in its class.

Premium print quality for high-quality products “Together with our steadily evolving range of digital offerings we believe in the future of printed, appealing daily newspapers and other print products in terms of their visual qualities and contents,” says head of the business area responsible for the printing facility Gerhard Dust. He sees the most recent investment as an important step in producing the media house’s numerous print titles efficiently and economically, and to meet today’s demands for quality. “The decision in favour of the KBA Commander CL is the result of an extensive selection process which focused on the factors efficiency, economy and quality. The KBA web press featuring a first-class inking unit with three forme rollers impressively demonstrated its outstanding potential in terms of print quality during a printing test.” The company’s technical director Thomas Wenge adds: “From a technical point of view we were bowled over by key features, such as practical automation with automatic plate changers and plate lifts as well as the unique roller locks, which result in a high level of productivity and economy.” “It is our firm belief that we have made a future-

focused choice with the decision in favour of this cutting-edge press,” Gerhard Dust concludes.

A member of the world’s best newspaper printers’ club The Aschendorff group is the leading media supplier in Münster and the region. The core competence and roots of the familyrun company which was founded nearly 300 years ago lie in the printed word. The firm publishes 20 different local editions including the Westfälische Nachrichten, the

region’s daily with the largest circulation, the Ahlener Zeitung, the Tageblatt für den Kreis Steinfurt in Ochtrup, the Münstersche Zeitung and the Grevener Zeitung. The newspaper experts are well known in the industry for their outstanding print quality. They are a longstanding member of the exclusive International Newspaper Color Quality Club and also belong to the WAN-IFRA Star Club. Apart from its core business in print media, which also comprises of frees, supplements, magazines and books, the media group with its some 600 staff take advantage of the possibilities and opportunities of electronic media, internet, radio and TV. The www.wn.de is the widest reaching online news portal in the region. Setting up new digital platforms is the second pillar of the company’s business strategy. The third cornerstone of the group’s portfolio are professional service providers and marketing offerings, e.g. in the areas of marketing and logistics for the entire media sector.

Highly automated and flexible The KBA Commander CL’s tailor-made configuration is the result of intensive evaluation and project work between the professional team from Aschendorff and KBA experts. The 350 x 500mm format (13.8 x

19.7in) press can print 100,000 broadsheet newspapers per hour with up to 16 full-colour pages. The Commander CL ordered essentially comprises two four-high towers for 4/4 printing, a KF 5 jaw folder and two Pastomat reelstands with a stripping station and Patras A reel-transport system. An extensive package of automation modules including RollerTronic roller locks, inking unit and cylinder washing systems, fanout compensation, colour measuring and control systems, colour and cut-off register controls, and automatic plate changing keep makeready times, waste, operating and maintenance efforts to a minimum. An intelligent quality management system supports a high print quality. The press is equipped with facilities for special ad forms, such as four-page centre spreads (Superpanorama), half-covers and spadia, for inline finishing and provision has been made for the addition of further modules for Zip’n’Buy and ribbon stitching. The Commander CL will be controlled from an ErgoTronic console featuring EasyTronic software for optimised start-up and automated run-down as well as PressNet for scheduling, presetting and process control.

South Asian Newspaper Directory 2015 - 2017

www wan ifra org southasia

WAN-IFRA has published its biennial publication “South Asian Newspaper Directory 2015 – 2017” and the Directory reveals interesting trends. A look at the past three editions of the directory, since 2011,

shows that newspaper publishers continue to increase the number of editions and printing centres, double-width presses is the new trend among the regional language newspapers, automation and new workflow systems for production, page planning and editorial systems are becoming popular. According to the 2014 annual report of Registrar of Newspapers for India (RNI), the total circulation of registered publications increased by about 37% since 2011. Zenith Optimedia estimates 28 percent growth in advertising expenditure (in newspapers and magazines together) in India during this period. The similar trend in circulation can also be found in other South Asian countries where newspapers continue to grow. The trends observed from the directory closely relate to the report of RNI and Zenith Optimedia, as newspapers update their technology to support their growing business.

The directory lists out 160 news publishers across South Asia and many of them with the complete details of infrastructure and workflow employed in the publishing house. More than four months of labour has gone into researching the data and publishing the directory in its current form. For those wanting to have closer look at the emerging trends of news publishing industry in South Asia, the directory will act as a very good reference source. A limited number of printed copies of the directory are available on first come first basis. Ricoh helps Lantia tear up Publishing rulebook Lantia, the innovative print-on-demand (POD) publisher, digital distributor, bookstore marketing and author crowd-funding platform, is re-writing the rules of publishing supported by a broad portfolio of Ricoh print production solutions. The company, founded in 2013, now manages the catalogues of more than fifty publishers and self-publishers. It handles everything from cover design, layout and prepress to POD and e-distribution, and from sales reporting to royalty management. Central to its operational ethos is flexibility in book production. “It was essential for us to improve the book printing process and considerably shorten the time to market, regardless of the number of books,” states Lantia’s Enrique Parrilla, General Manager. He is also the founder of crowdfunding publishing platform Pentian to allow new authors to gain funding for their books, launched by Lantia. Originally Lantia intended to partner with a local book manufacturer for production of printed books. However, they could not find a partner who could offer the service they needed, so they decided to set up, from scratch, their own book production facility inhouse. A full review of available options was undertaken before Ricoh became the partner of choice, explains Parrilla. “We looked at what manufacturers had to offer, but chose to invest with Ricoh for a number of reasons,” he says. “The quality of their post-sale service was crucial, as was the reliability of their systems. We also evaluated their professional services as well as the unique colour and mono quality of the final print.” Their first solution, a Ricoh Pro C5110S was installed when the company was established. This provided entry level colour cut sheet printing. However, as the business grew rapidly, a Ricoh Pro C751, offering greater colour productivity and two Ricoh Pro 8120s mono presses with EFI Fiery RIPs were added within eight months. Parrilla adds, “Ricoh also gave us professional training to help us determine how best to drive the systems in the most effective and productive way and improve the overall printing process.”

28

May 2015

This certainly paid off when the company was awarded the contract to produce two shortrun print titles for Paulo Coelho. Coelho’s literary agency, Sant Jordi Asociados, approached Lantia with novellas The Supreme Gift and Like the Flowing River. These had previously been available only as Kindle downloads and, although successful, were not set for a global release. Mr. Parilla explains, “At short notice, we decided to produce a fully working online sales and management interface and a hard copy of the books. We worked over the weekend. On Monday, we added two versions of the sample book (The Supreme Gift) onto our system, and ordered the POD version. The copies were completed at our production centre in Seville, we collected them on Tuesday, and took a flight to Barcelona on Wednesday. The Ricoh systems enable us to offer truly profitable POD and give us the confidence that we can honour the most demanding service level agreements.” The Ricoh investment also supports Pentian, the initiative that enables authors to submit and bring work to market via Pentian.com’s crowdfunding site. Pricing levels are suggested at $10 for an e-book, for instance, or $25 for a hardcover copy, and the price might be higher for a signed hardcover. Readers and investors contribute to financially cover the costs of the project’s production and receive part of the profits from the sale of the book. The work is published in both paper and e-format.

Mr. Parrilla says the crowdfunding platform enables a ‘disruptive’ financial connection between authors and readers. He adds that in thirty days, a book can be sold worldwide. And Pentian has signed a host of worldwide distribution partners, including Ingram, Amazon, Kobo, Barnes & Noble, Google, Apple and El Corte Inglés. The model is working. Since launching its beta test model six months ago, Pentian has captured more than 6% of the selfpublishing market in Spain, and it is growing exponentially as the company expands in the United States. Mr. Parrilla concludes, “Thanks to our investments and approach to the market, Lantia can now deliver more books to more customers in less time. We are closer to publishers and are able to offer improved quality in a number of different formats. We are as flexible as we can be thanks to Ricoh’s production solutions and, in turn, so are our customers.”

OMET debuts iFLEX and Varyflex V2 Offset More than 200 people ‘Welcomed The Future’ at the debut of OMET new presses: iFLEXand Varyflex V2 Offset.

Customers from different parts of the world visited OMET premises in Lecco on May 19, 2015 to welcome the company’s two new presses: iFLEX, narrow web press for labels and Varyflex V2 Offset mid-web variable size press for flexible packaging printing.

Varyflex V2 Offset summarizes all the advantages of Varyflex V2 presses (multi-process approach, servo and gearless operation, ergonomics), appreciated by converters worldwide, widening its reach through the addition of powerful Offset to meet pre-press, inking and printing quality standards, combined with low-cost platemaking and precise colour control.

Italian Minister of Social Affairs and Employment Giuliano Poletti was guided in a tour of the company by Antonio Bartesaghi, managing director of OMET Group, and Marco Calcagni, sales and marketing director, and introduced to OMET’s products excellence. The event unveiled iFLEX and featured demos on both iFLEX and Varyflex V2 Offset presses. The 200 guests, a mix of customers, industry people and journalists, were introduced to OMET’s new machines and learnt about the presses’ characteristics of user-friendliness, operational efficiency, ergonomics and rapidity in changeover. Both presses performed greatly and produced diverse high-level quality jobs. iFLEX, entry-level machine for labels, features simplicity of use, amazingly short set-up times and low waste operation. On iFLEX press, innovative devices like iLIGHT, pre-register system through laser pointers, and iVISION, smart camera-assisted register on each print unit, left the public spellbound. Varyflex V2 Offset, an impressive press for technology

Key Notes : > Varyflex V2 – optimal printing of thin films, multi-layer films, labels, laminates, carton boxes and special applications. > iFLEX – ease of use, ergonomics of operation and maximum return on investment. > iFLEX – productivity, time and waste savings, highest quality of execution in one pass and quick delivery to customers.

and performance, ideal for flexible packaging printing and for difficult substrates, performed greatly on shrinkable materials and thin films. Through the patented Easy Sleeve Format Change system, job changeovers are quick to perform, involve little waste and bring flexibility to the whole printing process. Varyflex V2 Offset is the perfect press to print flexible packagingin direct competition with CI Flexo and rotogravure presses or to accommodate runs of shrink sleeves, IML, multi-layer films, laminates and special applications.

Varyflex V2 Offset – the innovative mid-web variable-size sleeve press for flexible packaging printing Equipped with state-of-the-art V2 Mid-Web Offset print units using lightweight sleeves for quick and easy job changeover, Varyflex V2 Offset is the ideal press to print small to long runs of high quality flexible packaging. Available in widths 670mm (26’’) and 850mm (33’’), Varyflex V2 Offset is made unique by the introduction of a new mid-web Offset unit concept granting the highest operational flexibility, simplicity in use, wide machine accessibility and maximum efficiency with any print run. The geometry of OMET’s patented ‘Easy Sleeve Format Change’ is guarantee of mechanical robustness and great printing quality at high speeds.

pressideas/ plc

From the first approach to Offset technology, OMET has made tremendous R&D efforts. It dates back, in fact, to 2008 the presentation of the first Offset unit with interchangeable cassettes, followed in 2012 by narrow and mid-web sleeve Offset on XFlex X6 printing presses and, today, the V2 Offset midweb variable-size sleeve group in widths 670mm(26’’) and 850mm (33’’). The V2 Offset print unit, publicly presented on May 19, 2015, is characterized by an innovative inking group with four inking rollers on the plate, optional mixed or separate dampening and an user-friendly colour management system ensuring the maximum stability during production. Through ‘Easy Sleeve format change’ system, the format changeover (the widest, with 16-32’’ interval) is rather simple and quick to perform thanks to the use of lightweight pneumo-locking sleeves having the external tube in fiberglass, carbon fiber or aluminum. The introduction of Revolver cart to fasten the sleeves changeover is another revolutionary idea. When the Revolver cart is moved in proximity of the machine, the sleeves slide in and out the press with no effort and no need of hoists. Further advantages offered by the job changeover on Varyflex V2 Offset presses are: the positioning of the sleeves in a ‘comfort zone’ for the operator, the LEDilluminated changeover area, the transparent casing of the unit for visual checking during set-up, the possibility to fully open the unit front frame to perform the few manual operations, and many more. Thanks to the ‘Easy Sleeve Format Change’, Varyflex V2 Offset is to all effects a variable-size sleeve press characterized by the greatest flexibility. Customers can choose configuration that best suits their needs. They can select the most appropriate in-line printing and finishing technologies and drying/curing systems among UV wet/wet, UV Interdeck and/or EB wet/wet.

quality standards, combined with low-cost platemaking and precise colour control. The new V2 Offset groups enrich Varyflex V2 press for optimal printing of thin films, multilayer films, labels, laminates, carton boxes and special applications. Packaging printers who choose Varyflex V2 Offset could not but appreciate the press high print quality, efficiency in long runs printing at high speeds (up to 400 meters per minute) and, above all, the simplicity and rapidity of job changeover for the printing of short runs with heavy rotation bringing a tremendous decrease of costs and waste.

iFLEX changes label printing experience On May 19, 2015 OMET officially presents the new press iFLEX dedicated to label printing. It is the start of a new way to print labels packed with a great deal of innovation aimed at simplifying the printer’s work and increasing the press efficiency. iFLEX, UV Flexo machine in width 370mm, inspired by a careful analysis of customers’ needs and promoting ease of operation, is equipped with tools designed to reach the highest print quality in a few, easy steps. Specifically, we refer to innovative pre-register and register devices that contribute to speed up the machine set-up after each job changeover. First of all, iLIGHT, pre-register system through laser pointers located on each Flexo group – the laser pointer indicates the best alignment of the plate holder with the aim to speed up the changeover and time to register. An identical laser pointer is positioned perpendicular to the die to guarantee the quickest, and immediately effective, die changeover. The best register is achieved thanks to instant cameras positioned on each printing unit (iCAM) capturing the register mark for immediate correction, and a monitor located centrally

on the machine (iVISION).Register is rapidly set, as the material advances, without having to wait for the monitor to show the register mark at the end of the line. The results so far monitored of the combined work of iLIGHT laser pointers, iCAM smart cameras and iVISIONsystem, guarantee a quantity of waste during set-up similar to that obtained with fully servo motorized machines. iFLEX introduces the shortest web path (1,3 meters)in the field of narrow web machines which makes it a super compact press ensuring important material savings in the start-up phase (the register setting waste is below the web length between two prints!). iFLEX, moreover, is the only machine to have all the printing cylinders Direct Drive controlled so to increase the printing precision and eliminate the criticalities due to traditional gear transmission. In this regard, the presence of only one gear per Flexo unit is guarantee of elevated print quality results. At the end of the line, through the new diecutting quick-change (QCDC), it is possible to prepare the die cylinder offline on a specific trolley, with no need of lifting hoists. iFLEX label printing machine is equipped with Rock’n’Roll automatic matrix rewinding system that guarantees a smooth printing process with no slowdowns in the diecutting phase, even in the case of complex shapes. The ensemble of die, cut and matrix rewinding is named CONVERTING EXPRESS. The machine handles a wide range of formats (from 5 to 18 ½’’) tailored to the needs of a small/medium label converter, and for little investment in the production of printing plates. iFLEX is designed to work continuously, without stops for maintenance; its richness and constructive finesse make it a strong, silent press, designed for intensive work cycles and performance, and consistent

printing results. The robust protection carters of the Flexo units increase the operator’s safety and prevent the fall of dirt on the plate cylinder, resulting in no downtime for cleaning operations. The machine configuration flexibility allows the insertion in-line of cold foil (as standard), screen printing (optional), UV lamination (optional) and an end-line video control camera (optional). On request the machine could have a longer web path for use with water-based inks, and hot air or hot air and UV drying tunnel.

So states Marco Calcagni, OMET’s sales and marketing director: “iFLEX fills a technology gap on today’s market as it is the ideal complement of the equipment of medium to large label converters that produce large volumes of simple labels with just-in-time deliveries looking for a decrease in wastage. At the same time, it represents for smaller label converters with less investment capacity, the fundamental technological resource to print any job, no matter the volume, with a very high ROI.”

iFLEX creates an inseparable man-machine combination achieving concrete objectives of productivity, time and waste savings, highest quality of execution in one pass and quick delivery to customers. The new iFLEX stands apart in the narrow-web label printing segment.

comments: “We are excited about our new home for 2016’s show and future editions. Pragati Maidan had very limited availability for 2016 which meant the show would have been held too close to Diwali, so by moving to the India Expo Centre we have been able to secure much better dates for 2016’s edition. With the show set to be around 25% larger in the new event space, we are very confident that its more modern and central layout will enhance the show and provide a refreshed experience for visitors and exhibitors alike.”

Esko Kongsberg celebrates 50 years of innovation Bright future ahead for digital finishing specialist Esko has announced the 50th anniversary of its Kongsberg digital finishing systems. Esko Kongsberg is Esko’s flagship solution with thousands of installations around the globe. “Over the course of fifty years, we have accumulated strong skills, great knowhow and excellent technology. This has enabled us to evolve from a manufacturer of drafting tables into a leading supplier of digital finishing systems,” says Emil Skarra, Managing Director Norway at Esko. “Digital finishing is a vital part of Esko’s strategy, and Esko Kongsberg is key to our future success and that of our customers,” adds Udo Panenka, President of Esko. “Fifty years of constant innovation have provided us with a strong reputation and foundation. We have excellent technology and skills to help our customers take full advantage of the opportunities digital finishing offers in mainly the signage, display and packaging markets.”

Strong portfolio built on 50 years of innovation In the early years, Kongsberg manufactured the first drafting tables used to produce test-parts and verify cutting programs for ship building. Soon the portfolio expanded to include equipment to engrave print clichés for map printing and then full-size designs for cars and trucks. In the 1980’s,the traditional Kongsberg drafting tables were used in both the sign and packaging markets. In the following years, the company changed owners through a series of acquisitions as it became part of well-known graphic arts companies: first Artios, followed by Barco which transformed in what is today known asEsko.“Our future as a market leader was sealed by the acquisition of the company in 2002 by Esko. Not only could we provide total solutions, but we could also rely on the strength of a global sales force and service network to take us into new markets and seize new opportunities,” Skarra comments. In 2011, Esko – including its Kongsberg operation– was acquired by Danaher, setting the stage for even more innovation in the future. Today, Esko Kongsberg serves three primary markets: packaging, displays and signage.

“We aim to make production as easy, efficient and productive as possible for our customers – starting at the early stages of structural design, right up through the finished product,” adds Tom Erik Naess, Esko’s Product Manager CAM. The current Kongsberg product portfolio ranges from the XE-series of small format table featuring accuracy and speed, to the XN-series for more versatility and robustness and the XPseries for productivity. Last additions to the Kongsberg family are the V-Series of tables for entry-level sign and sample making, and C-series for (very) wide format productivity.

A bright future ahead The future of Esko Kongsberg looks bright, not in the least with the digital printing market continuing to flourish. “We increasingly see our digital finishing equipment being used for true production of finished products instead of just prototyping or sample making,” Panenka adds. “As a result, we are directing much of our research and development effort toward increasing productivity and industrialization with more automation, tighter linkage to software solutions, more industrial infrastructure (such as material handling) and integration with other machinery.” “This year, we also started renovating our Kongsberg site and developing an Innovation Center to enable lean product development methodologies and processes driven by DBS (Danaher Business Systems). These will ensure customer-driven product design delivering the highest quality and performance

by targeting the specific needs of our customers. For example, our new prototype center will allow us to utilize benchmark product development processes and methodologies as well as deliver rapid prototyping and enhanced testing,” concludes Panenka. “These are exciting times for the company and for our customers, and we are confidently looking forward to the next 50 years of Kongsberg innovation!” Esko will be celebrating Kongsberg’s 50th anniversary at FESPA 2015, taking place in Germany this year from May 18 to 22.

UPM Raflatac celebrates 40 years UPM Raflatac, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of self-adhesive label stock, is celebrating 40 years’ history as a company. For decades, Raflatac’s business has been serving its customers with leading-edge products, efficient production processes and the capacity to innovate. It supplies high-quality paper and film label stock for consumer product and industrial labelling through a global network of factories, distribution terminals and sales offices. Employing around 2,800 people, it made sales of EUR 1.2 billion (USD 1.5 billion) in 2014. UPM Raflatac is part of UPM – The Biofore Company. This success story in Finnish industrial history began 40 years ago in Tampere. Chemist Juhani Strömberg, working for paper converting company Raf. Haarla, set out to develop water-based alternatives to solvent-based adhesives. Water-based label technology, which was still a rarity for label printers in the 1970s, was a significant advancement because it enabled higher speeds on printing machinery and greater efficiency for label production. Strömberg’s innovations were also a major step towards the sustainable production methods and label materials to which UPM Raflatac remains strongly committed. Raflatac originated from one man’s vision, and today the company is a global pioneer in its field with strong prospects for the future. Growth and internationalization started at

the end of the 1970s, and UPM Raflatac has since continued its rapid advancement on the global self-adhesive label stock market. The company has 11 production facilities worldwide. UPM Raflatac’s success is based on a determined implementation of strategy, active research and development and the resources of a world-class forest industry company. An additional and undisputed strength is the Raflatouch – the unique way employees operate and work with people both internally and externally. Internal entrepreneurship and the Raflatouch spirit demonstrated by employees will prevail as strengths underpinning the company’s future profitable growth strategy.

“At Raflatac, a strong sense of presence has been retained for the company’s history and its founders. New has been built from the foundation of the old. Entrepreneurship has shown itself particularly at times of change, when a strategic determination and shared goal have led to success,” UPM Raflatac’s Executive Vice President Tapio Kolunsarka reflects. “As employees, we are mindful that Raflatac is under our temporary custodianship, and that it is our duty to pass on to future generations an increasingly strong and successful company. As proud as we are of our history, we’re even more excited about the future and what we can offer both to our employees and customers in years to come.” In honour of its 40-year history, UPM Raflatac is publishing a book titled The Story of RAFLATAC - From Internal Entrepreneurship to Global Self-Adhesive Labelstock Business. The book will be published in Finnish and English in spring 2015.

FINAT Young Managers Club fosters sharpened business skills FINAT’s Young Managers Club (YMC) reports on its successful second YMC Global Congress that was held last month in Slovakia. The Congress lived up to its ‘Climb to the Top’ theme by bringing together label industry participants in the ‘under forties’ category to help them sharpen their business skills to meet the challenges of a changing world. The 2015 YMC Global Congress once again took a very hands-on approach, combining a company site visit, workshops and panel discussion sessions. “This year’s edition of the YMC Global Congress was yet again a great learning opportunity. Even for those beyond the age of 40, it is never too late to change habits in order to become even more effective. The interactive, educational format of the YMC meetings, including the previous event in Poland, has set new standards and was one of the sources of inspiration behind the makeover of our primary event, which has now been redefined as the European Label Forum,” comments Jules Lejeune, FINAT’s Managing Director. “It is always a pleasure to speak with people who are experiencing the same challenges as I, and to meet new young managers in our industry,” adds YMC President and congress chairman Dana Kilarska. “It is great to see people coming back to this event but, most importantly, it is great to see new young managers at these events, because this means that YMC is a strong platform for young managers in the labelling industry. We climb to the TOP!”

An exciting and educational Congress programme A high point of the conference was the facility visit to the internationally-recognised Bratislava-based self-adhesive label converter Purgina, home Dana Kilarska. She and her brother, Radovan, are the second generation of young managers of a business founded by their parents in 1991. The company’s 80 employees offer a full-service design-to-print label capability to its customers, with a focus on labels for highend wines and beers and spirits. The formal Congress agenda opened with a highly-effective workshop on core management principles: ‘Seven habits of

42

May 2015

highly-effective people’, given by Zoltan Demjan of leading global consultancy Franklin Covey. Mr.Demjan emphasized the fact that ‘we decide on our actions’, and showed how he had taken this concept to heart as a mountaineer, with major climbs and presidency of the Czechoslovak Mountaineering Association behind him. The Congress also featured an innovation workshop conducted by Dr.Jozef Kristak, Deputy Director of management consultancy IPA Slovakia. He defined a ‘thin’ company and the challenges achieving leanness involves – like experiencing the changes in customer requirements; attacks on costs, variability in order volumes and delivery times, etc., which complicate forecasting of customer needs and wants and require supplier flexibility.

Highly valued by the participants The informal, yet highly educational approach of the YMC Congress is very much appreciated by the participants, as evidenced by comments from Rodolfo Hagmaier of Hagmaier Etiketten & Druck, who states: “As always, the YMC congress was a big success. I was able to take away many new ideas and impressions for our company. The conversations with YMC colleagues are very helpful for building up an overview of the market. It was great to go out with this wonderful group of young managers. And perhaps one of the most important things is that we all had a lot of fun!”

Hank Guijtens of SPGPrints fully agrees, saying: “It was a great event to meet colleagues from the label business and get trained at the same time. The experience and the different perspectives of the people created a professional atmosphere and inspired new energy and ideas. I will definitely participate in this congress the next time.” “I was overwhelmed by the quality of the speaker list and of each individual presentation,” comments Leo Becker of Avery Dennison. “This was the highest concentration I’ve experienced of knowledge and expertise on a range of leading-edge topics by people who really know their subjects. Most highly recommended!” “The FINAT YMC brings together a group of young managers with high prospects. This edition in the beautiful Slovakian capital Bratislava was an excellent choice of venue in which to experience the potential of new possibilities on our business markets. I will be able to apply what we have seen and learned from these workshops in my day-to-day business. We should organise this event more than once a year!” adds Steven Minjauw of CERM Belgium. Filip Weymans of Xeikon, says: “This YMC was truly a great edition. The programme was the right balance between work and pleasure, allowing participants to get to know each other. The different workshops were focused upon personal development,

perspectives of market development, and a hands-on exercise of practical day-to-day challenges in the production environment. As such, the event covered a broad spectrum, and that is exactly what a YMC Congress should do: expose people to the broad spectrum of business!”

Quality assurance: Sibress presents new SibScope microscope Sibress, manufacturer of measurement and analysis systems for quality assurance in flexographic and package printing, at Starnberg near Munich, has launched the newly developed SibScope microscope and SibView measurement software on to the market. The newly developed Sibress SibScope microscope undertakes the task of examining objects such as anilox, gravure and flexo plates, with the highest image quality and precision. At maximum magnification, objects are displayed full-screen with a size of 97 µm, via 80x lenses (relative to 60 cm screen diagonal). SibScope can be used both on round or cylindrical surfaces (from 6 cm diameter) as well as on flat surfaces.

Highest sharpness of detail thanks to filter technology The microscope is equipped with five planachromatic lenses (flat field lenses). The desired magnification is selected by simply rotating the nosepiece. SibScope comes with the following lenses: 5x, 10x, 20x, 40x, 80x, as well as optional 4x and 100x. A variety of available mechanical filters makes it possible to display surfaces in sharp detail and with rich contrast. For object viewing, the user can switch between the 10x binocular supplied, and the built-in, high-resolution microscope camera. The image can then be examined on a PC monitor. The optical microscope can be moved in X, Y and Z directions (height adjustable). For height/depth determination, a digital dial gauge with a 1 µm resolution is integrated into SibScope. The manual height adjustment allows accuracies of significantly below 1 µm, so that even the finest surface structures can be brought into focus, and thereby examined in razor sharp detail. During measurement, the height measurement values are immediately transmitted to the newly developed, also by Sibress, supplied SibView software, via an interface which has been specially designed for the microscope. SibView also fully automatically displays the currently selected planachromatic lenses. Thus, the calibration parameters stored in the software are automatically selected for each lens, and measurements displayed correctly.

SibView - more than a measuring tool The system is delivered calibrated in the X, Y and Z axes. The SibView software offers various measuring tools, such as distance measurement, angular position, angular positions comparison, widths distance measurement with angular position, circle, circumference, and area. Additional comments may be added to the image. When capturing with a height measurement, image and height measurements are stored together, and can also be reloaded as such. A specially developed image quick save function allows the user to save the image, with corresponding depth/height information, in a fraction of a second, by pressing any key. The image and height/depth information is stored in a freely selectable folder, without having to assign the image a special name. On this basis, the captures can be used to create a 3D image using third-party software.

SibScope - more than a surface inspection microscope The SibScope microscope can also be used to evaluate flexographic printing plates, with the optionally available Sibress Versatile@Flex software. The Flexo software, well-established in the market over many years now, fully automatically analyses parameters such as dot percentage, dot size, screen ruling, and many more. At the same time, the precise stencil depth of flexo plates can also be determined. Dots

Sibress has developed the SibScope microscope for inspection and metrological analysis of anilox rolls, engraving plates, flexographic printing plates, etc..

can ultimately be examined at the highest resolution, and viewed in real terms. This is specially designed for high-interest HD-flexo applications. The exact height difference between individual dots also allows us to determine the actual circumference of a point at each location. The combination of both software packages makes SibScope also an ideal solution for flexographic printing operations with their own repro, who want to analyse both their anilox rolls and their flexo plates. Moreover, thanks to its optical filter, SibScope is also excellent for engraving operations, or for inspecting printed circuit board structures. It is useful for all applications, where it is important to examine and evaluate the smallest details, through excellent image resolution and sharpness.

Xeikon Cheetah hits the quality mark at its first North American installation at Accu-Label Label printing expert leverages market’s fastest full-colour digital label press to better meet customer needs and support growth Xeikon has announced the first North American installation of the Xeikon Cheetah at Accu-Label making it the third pilot site worldwide to install this breakthrough digital label production solution. Accu-Label, located in Fort Wayne, Indiana, has added Xeikon’s new press to complement its existing production platform, which includes a Xeikon 3500 that was installed last year, as well as flexographic printing solutions. Xeikon Cheetah is one of the most productive fivecolour digital label presses available on the market today. It was the exceptional speed of the press (98 ft/min or 30m/min), combined with its high quality output, that convinced Accu-Label to invest in the Xeikon Cheetah. The investment will enable the company to respond to evolving client demands, expand into new markets and optimize its production processes – all while meeting the high level of quality output the company has been renowned for throughout its history.

production platform with the Xeikon 3500, which is already in high demand. Today, we are building on our investment in digital with the Xeikon Cheetah.”

“We chose Xeikon because they really understood our business and challenges. Our experiences with their customer support, technical service and consulting services have been outstanding,” explains David Manning, Accu-Label’s founder. “Of course, speed was a big consideration, but there was more… we are a company that has always been dedicated to providing the best quality printing and a high level of service. For us, it doesn’t matter how fast a press goes if we can’t deliver a quality product. We felt the Xeikon Cheetah gave us both speed and better quality than other digital printing technologies currently available on the market. The Xeikon team showed us how installing the Xeikon Cheetah would help us meet the specific demands of our customers while ensuring superior quality. Having this flexibility is a fundamental market differentiator for us.”

The digital journey

A tradition of quality

David comments that one of the biggest benefits of digital is the greater level of flexibility it offers for design and prototyping. He notes, “This flexibility lets us provide better service to existing customers and offer new services to companies we have not been able to work with before. For example,

Until its first Xeikon acquisition last year, the business at Accu-Label had been 100% flexo, but Manning says, “I have always looked for more effective processes by asking ‘What’s a better way to do this?’ Last year, the answer was to add digital to our

Catie Manning, overseeing sales &marketing at Accu-Label, explains how the addition of the first digital press only one year ago changed the business. “In just one year, we have had so many jobs printed digitally that the Xeikon 3500 is running at high-capacity. Adding a second digital label press – the fastest on the market in its class – is vital to meeting their expectations, now and in the future. In addition, to better position the company to address our evolving customer needs, the speed and throughput of the Xeikon Cheetah will enable growth in our customer base. This will also improve the efficiency of our flexo production fleet by dedicating it to the longer runs it is designed to produce cost-efficiently.”

The addition of digital label production capacity has meant big changes for AccuLabel and its customers. Being able to offer both high quality digital and conventional flexographic printing expands the range of solutions and services the company can offer. David Manning believes the Xeikon Cheetah press is critical to continuing that expansion. He says, “Flexo is an art form that I truly love, and I’ve been practicing this art for a long time. But nowadays, it’s not the right solution for every label project. For proofs and mock-ups as well as shorter and versioned runs, the cost, time and energy required makes it inefficient, and in many cases, unattainable. The Xeikon Cheetah, which gives us higher quality than many other digital label production solutions on the market, is the key to future-proofing our business.”

we have customers who want to see many versions of their labels before they go into production. Digital label production lets you get to final designs more quickly and very cost-effectively. It enables clients to be more creative with their ideas and gives us the opportunity to help them bring that creativity to market faster. This process saves time, money and effort for the client – another key advantage of digital label production.”

Perfect match, perfect quality David Manning says, “Quality and consistency are critical to us and to our customers, and with our combination of flexographic printing and Xeikon digital presses, we never sacrifice either one. We hit the quality mark each and every time.” “Accu-Label is a great example of what a label manufacturer can accomplish by incorporating digital toner technology into the mix,” adds Filip Weymans, Director of Segment Marketing, Labels and Packaging at Xeikon. “And there is no better way to do that than with the Xeikon Cheetah. Manning concludes, “When we talked about the future, it became clear that the right equipment would help us continue to build on our success. The new Xeikon Cheetah press is exactly the technology we need in order to do that.”

World’s first 3D printed photosynthetic wearable Opening new frontiers for art, design, science and technology Stratasys, global provider of 3D printing and additive manufacturing solutions, has recently announced that its long-term collaborator, architect and designer Neri Oxman, has revealed the world’s first 3D printed photosynthetic wearable, embedded with living matter. On the TED2015 stage in Vancouver, Oxman unveiled Mushtari, an artwork 3D printed by Stratasys, and the world’s first wearable combining multimaterial additive manufacturing and synthetic biology.

create a large fluid network within Mushtari that varied in transparency from opaque to clear. According to Oxman: “This enabled varying levels of transparency and translucency to be designed into surface areas where photosynthesis was desired. Channels and pockets were implemented to enhance the flow and functionality of the cells – such mechanical and optical property gradation can only be achieved using multi-material 3D printing with high spatial resolution for manufacturing.”

In a step change for science, technology and design, Oxman explains how Mushtari has been developed not only to host living organisms, but also to manipulate their function. As Oxman states in her oration: “We live in a special time,” alongside the latest advances in computational design, materials engineering, synthetic biology, and additive manufacturing.

Stratasys developed a new tailor-made solution for this particular piece. According to Naomi Kaempfer, Creative Director Art Fashion Design at Stratasys, “We have a fertile research collaboration with Professor Neri Oxman, one that has great reciprocal benefits as we push each other to the edges of expression and technological capability. 3D printing Mushtari is a wonderful example of how far this collaboration can bring us. The fluid channels in the wearable stretch to around 58 meters, with an inner channel diameter ranging from 1 mm to 2.5 cm, frequently turning sharply in new directions. Clearing the support material out from such a long, narrow and complex structure to create the hollow channels for living matter presented a significant challenge. Our R&D team went beyond the boundaries of our existing technology, formulating a dedicated improved support structure to allow a smooth, effective process in support of Professor Oxman’s vision.”

“This is the first time that 3D printing technology has been used to produce a photosynthetic wearable piece with hollow internal channels designed to house microorganisms,” Oxman explains. “Inspired by the human gastrointestinal tract, Mushtari is designed to host synthetic microorganisms - a co-culture of photosynthetic cyanobacteria and E. coli bacteria - that can fluoresce bright colours in darkness and produce sugar or biofuels when exposed to the sun. Such functions will in the near future augment the wearer by scanning our skins, repairing damaged tissue and sustaining our bodies, an experiment that has never been attempted before.” Stratasys’ unique triple-jetting 3D printing technology enabled Oxman’s team – including her researcher, Will Patrick – to

Mushtari is a continuation of a piece from Oxman’s Wanderers: An Astrobiological Exploration, part of ‘The Sixth Element’ design collection curated by Stratasys for EuroMold 2014. With four pieces of artwork, the Wanderers series is an ongoing collaboration between Stratasys and Neri Oxman, as well as members of the Mediated Matter research group, the Laboratory of Prof. Pamela Silver at Harvard Medical School, and Deskriptiv (Christopher Bader & Dominik Kolb). The Wanderers series speculates about the possibility of voyaging beyond planet Earth to other planets. Each of the wearables in the series is designed to contain and generate

life-sustaining elements. Mushtari, meaning huge or giant in Arabic, evoking the planet Jupiter, was designed as a single strand filled with living matter. An organ system for consuming and digesting biomass, absorbing nutrients and expelling waste, the 3D printed translucent tract was designed to support the flow of cyanobacteria engineered to convert sunlight into sucrose presenting the prospects of sustaining living organisms inside a wearable. The Stratasys 3D printed piece for Oxman’s creation and TED Talk continued this idea and saw Mushtari function for the very first time as a vessel to support, control and manipulate living organisms inside a wearable device. Other Stratasys 3D printed pieces featured in the TED Talk that were developed by Oxman and her team, included an acoustic chair designed to absorb sound, a ‘second skin’ cape and skirt designed by Oxman with Iris Van Herpen for Paris Fashion Week 2013, and a bone and muscle inspired helmet from Oxman’s ‘Imaginary Beings: Mythologies of the Not Yet’ collection. For the Imaginary Beings series, first shown at the Centre Pompidou, Paris, in 2012, Stratasys once again pushed the boundaries of its existing technological capabilities, showcasing a demonstration of 3D printed design pieces in color with a combination of different material properties, possible only with the Stratasys unique triple-jetting 3D printing technology. “In the end, it is clear that the incorporation of synthetic biology in 3D printed products for wearable microbiomes will enable the transition from designs that are inspired by Nature, to designs made with and by Nature, to, possibly designing Nature herself,” says Neri Oxman as she reflects on the future.
