FROM THE EDITORS’ DESK Dear Readers, An important exhibition of the region, China Print 2017 just concluded in Beijing’s NCIEC venue. Leading global players from the vast Printing and Graphic Arts Industry showed their latest solutions to the region’s visiting printing community. As Asia’s top Printing exhibition, CHINA PRINT 2017 occupied more than 160,000 square meters exhibition area. With six special exhibition halls, eight special exhibition zones and new technology zones promoting industrial development, the latest 9th edition of the show also highlighted various high-end forums enriching concurrent events. Sheetfed major KBA, in the 200th year of its company history, proudly unfurled a banner with its anniversary slogan “Origin & Future – 200 Years Koenig & Bauer” above a 1,000 m2 stand at China Print. Visitors gained first-hand insights into the broad product portfolio offered to commercial, publication and packaging printers, alongside the associated workflow solutions, data-driven business models and services. Heidelberg was too pleased with the visitor response at the show as well. “China still plays an important role for Heidelberg, who is among the top 3 markets for Heidelberg together with Germany and USA. Heidelberg is fully committed to the development of Chinese printing industry, particularly with a modern and highly efficient factory in Shanghai,” says Mr. Rainer Hundsdoerfer, CEO of Heidelberg. Key packaging event for global packaging industry, interpack 2017 too concluded with a positive note. At interpack 2017, drupa 2020 was presented to international media partners during a major press conference. Online registration for exhibitors is now open and closes on 31 October 2018. Also, in the presence of a global audience, HP Inc. announced the commercial availability of HP Indigo Pack Ready Lamination, allowing immediate time-to-market for flexible packaging. Back home in India, HP Inc. India in association with Architecture + Design organized Design Summit 2017 recently. The event supported by Indian Institute of Architects (IIA) Pune chapter was attended by over 150 top architects along with several design experts. HP unveiled DesignJet T830 with armor case at the Summit. A major topic of discussion today is the widespread misinformation in media. The rise of fake news has become a pressing danger to modern societies. From deliberate hoaxes created to cause mischief, manipulate opinions and votes or make money, to media outlets re-circulating unverified or erroneous content, the misinformation ecosystem can take on many different faces. All this and more is to be discussed at a joint endeavour by The Straits Times and WAN-IFRA at a two-day event targeting the issue in Asia region. Besides, there are coverage on important industry happenings including installations, appointments, mergers and much more. Also of interest to our readers should be the interview of manroland CEO Rafael Peñuela Torres speaking frankly about the rebuilding of manroland sheetfed from the ashes of insolvency five years ago.

The practice-oriented print samples are as sought-after as ever

China Print 2017 opened its doors in Beijing on 9th May. And in the 200th year of its company history, the Koenig & Bauer Group (KBA) proudly unfurled a banner with its anniversary slogan “Origin & Future – 200 Years Koenig & Bauer” above a 1,000 m2 stand. Through to 13th May, visitors here gained first-hand insights into the broad product portfolio offered to commercial, publication and packaging printers, alongside the associated workflow solutions, datadriven business models and services.

Live demonstration on the new Rapida 75 PRO

Packaging is a particularly fast-growing segment in China, and KBA is well prepared to satisfy the arising market demands with offset, flexo, screen printing and digital inkjet presses for folding cartons, corrugated board, hollow containers and metal substrates. Since 2016, this already diverse product range has been supplemented further with rotary and flat-bed die-cutters from KBA-Sheetfed and KBAIberica, as well as marking and coding systems from KBA-Metronic, some of which are assembled at a local subsidiary in China itself.

A Man And His Mission In an exclusive interview, CEO Rafael Peñuela Torres speaks frankly about the rebuilding of manroland sheetfed from the ashes of insolvency five years ago. It’s now five years since the dark days of insolvency – tell me about your background with the company.

In the uncertain situation, manroland had an installed base of around 10,000 presses globally. This presented both an obligation and opportunity. It managed to retain most of its talented people in R&D and production, which was vital in its efforts to make a seamless transition under the new ownership.

Key Notes : > Rafael Peñuela Torres in conversation with Nick Coombes. > It was a great fillip to their self-esteem and confidence that someone from outside the industry saw manroland as a viable business going forward. > The burgeoning growth of printed packaging worldwide – as consumer demand increases for branded goods, is a cornerstone of their business.

RPT (Rafael Peñuela Torres): I began as Head of Finance in Spain in 1992 where, as in most countries, independent distributors represented MAN Roland as it was known back then. This all changed in 1999 when most of the distributors were acquired and I became a ‘Roländer’ and through various moves ended up as Head of Sales Sheetfed in our Offenbach HQ. At this time, remember, sheet fed and web fed were all one company. How involved were you with the insolvency negotiations? RPT: The process began in November 2011 and under German law the company had three months to find an investor to allow it to continue trading. We must have had more than a dozen companies who showed interest, from competitors to those outside the print trade – it was like a beauty contest in which we had to show off our best assets! In reality, it looked as though we would struggle to find a satisfactory resolution in the time available, but Tony Langley had been waiting in the wings and

came forward in late January, when it was clear that other parties, for whatever reason, could not proceed in the timescale. On the 9th of February 2012, he became the new owner of Manroland Sheetfed – the web division had already been sold off at that stage.

So what did Langley actually buy? RPT: All of the former Manroland AG sheetfed division assets – buildings, stock, debtors, plant,

machinery – everything, including the shares in our 40 or so market organisation subsidiaries around the world – and of course, he took over responsibility for the people. It was his largest acquisition at that time and a major financial commitment. It was also a great fillip to our self-esteem and confidence that someone from outside the industry saw Manroland as a viable business going forward.

Was the changeover difficult? RPT: The insolvency was the difficult part, from the moment Langley stepped in we were on the up. By the time everything settled down, we were left with around 1000 staff in Offenbach and another 1000 around the world and able to carry on trading normally – to complete presses under construction and fulfil orders that we had in the pipeline. But you must remember that the market was still struggling from the effects of the global financial crisis and trading conditions were very tough. The whole situation was very uncertain, but we had an installed base of around 10,000 presses to support globally and many loyal customers that relied on our presses to run their businesses. This presented both an obligation and opportunity. We also managed to retain most of our talented people in R&D and production, which was vital in our efforts to make a seamless transition under the new ownership.

I imagine there was a major change in management style? RPT: Oh yes! We had grown up with a big corporation mentality, like so many companies of our size and complexity, with many and various layers of management and protocols that needed to be observed. That all changed – and frankly, it needed to. We had to become more nimble and reactive and that involved adopting what Germans call a ‘Mittelstand’ mentality. The principle is one of ‘hands-on’ management, with the

yardstick of ‘would you spend your own money this way?’ The aim was (and still is) to live within our means and not spend what we don’t have. It was certainly a culture shock to many of our employees, but to their credit, most adapted. Those that did not are no longer here.

What were the priorities when you started to rebuild and how well have you done in those five years? RPT: The priority was a change of mindset and continuity of operations. The old business culture disappeared overnight – it was tough but it was the only way forward. And, we had a commitment to our customers that needed fulfilling, so there was no time to ponder. We promoted a number of new managers, who brought new ideas, and removed the old diluted responsibility practices of board meetings, committees and the other paraphernalia that goes with a large organisation. There is now a far greater degree of personal responsibility and accountability because we run the company with fewer people who are empowered to make decisions. On the physical side, we concentrated all our factories in one place and financially we learned very quickly how to live within our means. For our customers it has delivered the continuity that gives them security – and internally it has brought about a mood of optimism and sense of challenge that was

missing before. In practical terms, we developed and launched a new press platform, the Roland Evolution 700, in a two-year timeframe. That would have been unheard of in the old days. The Evolution has been very well received by the market and we have shipped more than 500 units to date. In financial terms, I believe we have done quite well. Langley has not had to inject any further cash into our business and we have reported black figures in each of the last five years. What’s more, in cash terms, we have returned Langley’s investment in full. So yes, I’d say we have done quite well.

How do you assess the market for sheet fed offset presses? RPT: I believe the future for sheetfed offset is bright in the short and the long term, despite the changes that are occurring in our industry. But those manufacturers that do not adapt, as Manroland has done, must also be at risk of failure. If Manroland was not ‘too big to fail’, then neither are the others. We see ourselves as one of five major players – three German and two Japanese in the market sectors we serve, namely B2 and larger. While China, for example, has many manufacturers of presses, they are still principally for domestic use and we do not see the situation changing significantly in the foreseeable future. In Germany particularly, where printing was born, the technology has evolved over many decades and Manroland has always been at the forefront of invention and innovation in print. There are two drivers – packaging and commercial. Personally, I believe offset printing has a brighter future in the commercial and publishing sectors than many others assume. This will come from

to pre-2007 days and know that we are now correctly structured to current levels of business.

the emerging nations where the high levels of illiteracy will be overcome with the printed word, not with ‘tablets’. One has only to see how many Government sponsored schemes there are in Africa and Latin America to increase access to schoolbooks to appreciate the business opportunities for offset printers. India, South East Asia and the aforementioned China have similar issues. And then of course there is the burgeoning growth of printed packaging worldwide, as consumer demand increases for branded goods. This is a cornerstone of our business.

What does today’s Manroland have to offer printing companies? RPT: From the outset we decided to retain our full portfolio of presses. So we still offer a B2 range, even though we did not enter this segment of the market until well after our competitors – but traditionally, Manroland is known for its medium and large format presses, known as the 700 and 900 series machines. We have of course pioneered many of the features that today are taken for granted. Our latest offering is the Evolution 700 series, which is without doubt the most technologically advanced press available. Manroland still stands, as it always has, for technology lead and extremely well designed and built German engineering – with all the reliability and performance that implies.

Is it all about the technology? RPT: No, it isn’t. There’s the essential element of service. It’s not just about selling the best printing press in the world, it’s about supporting that press throughout its entire life to ensure that it always performs to the optimum, day in and day out. This means going much further than simply replacing parts when they wear out. It means developing a close working relationship with our customers, understanding their business and working with them to achieve optimum efficiency, not only from their press, but from their processes as well. We call this TOP: Technology – Organisation – People. At the

end of the day, we have one goal with TOP, to make our customers as efficient as they possibly can be. For the most part we provide this support through our forty or so daughter companies. In the places where we do not have such operations, we use well established and trusted Sales and Service Partners, backed up of course by our experts here in Germany. Essentially, we are working to make our customers competitive and profitable in a highly competitive industry and we consider any user of our presses a potential partner for life.

Where does Manroland stand in the digital market? RPT: In terms of where offset is today, we do not see digital as a major threat in our principal markets of packaging and high quality commercial print. Only a small percentage of all print is produced on digital presses today, whether inkjet or toner, and the cost per sheet for most run lengths puts offset way ahead. With the advances we have made in speeding up make ready and job changeovers, even on runs as short as 1,000, we can compete with digital. Of course, what digital can do that offset cannot, is personalise – so for versioning of the same product for very short runs it’s clear that digital is the way to go. However, we do believe there is potential to marry digital with offset and we have a declared interest in Landa’s Nanotechnology, but essentially we view digital as complementary, rather than directly competitive.

What are you medium and longterm goals at Manroland Sheetfed? RPT: With the speed at which things change these days, it’s difficult to define medium and long term. In general, we’re looking to build on what we’ve achieved in the past five years. We managed to trade through a very difficult period and now have a clear understanding that demand will never return

With our new operational efficiency, the company is viable on fewer than 500 printing units per year, but we have maintained capacity to more than double that number with very little up-scaling of costs. We will of course continue to develop our portfolio of presses and services to offer the best we can to our customers, so that they can grow their businesses. At the moment, we are working on more retrofitting of several different features for automation and looking further forward, have plans for an Evolution version of the Roland 900 series. One thing that has not changed is that Manroland Sheetfed is continuing to shape the future of offset printing through technology.

So where does Langley Holdings and Tony Langley fit in these days? RPT: Fully committed is the best answer I can give. We enjoy the security of being part of the Langley Holdings family of businesses, but have a great degree of autonomy and know that Mr Langley takes a long-term view of his investments. As far as I know, in 40 years he has never sold any of the businesses he has acquired and doesn’t intend to. He proudly calls himself a ‘Roländer’ and takes a keen interest in what we are doing – but he doesn’t get involved in day to day running because we have already embraced the Langley culture of business management. The Group is very successful, despite the fact that different elements are at different stages of their market cycle. He has a deep understanding of business and a strong belief that we are heading in the right direction.

Are you pleased you took on the task of rebuilding the company from the ashes of insolvency? RPT: Absolutely! It’s been very rewarding to know that we have not only saved a fine old institution but brought it into the 21st century as well, not to mention preserving many hundreds of jobs and continuing to support many thousands of print shops around the world. It doesn’t bear thinking about how much those printers would have suffered if the company had disappeared. For sure, the print world as a whole would have been the poorer had we not succeeded. Now we have a spring in our step – and an eye to the future.

the workflow Prinect, which integrates all areas and lays the foundation for integrated communication inside the print shop, as well as between the print shop and their customers and suppliers. Besides, based on “Navigated Printing” philosophy, Intellistart 2 in the new Press Center XL 2 can identify the ideal changeover sequence, show the operator the shortest way to get from one OK sheet to the next, initiate all make ready operations and inform the operator when manual activities are necessary. Last but not least, Heidelberg Assistant offers personalized access – whether via computer or mobile – to all of a print shop’s key service, contract, and performance data. The online portal also provides access to a variety of Heidelberg products and services, offering customers the greatest transparency and end-to-end support for their entire printing business. All the above topics have attracted many visitors’ attention on Heidelberg’s booth during China Print 2017. Shree Parth Graphics ups the quality game The Indore based first generation entrepreneur installs KODAK CTP and Komori Enthrone 29 Press.

From working at a pre-press house to setting up his own graphic design house, to screen printing and then setting up a printing unit with an old Heidelberg machine, the two-decade long journey was arduous and enriching for Subhash Soni. A strong base in graphic arts over the years as an employee and then a first-generation entrepreneur, the dream was to grow business as well as the brand of Shree Parth Graphics.

The sustainability of print and business, durability of the equipment and the ability to perform in the most challenging print environments, combined with the need to have a future-looking technology on board, prompted the investment in KODAK’s CTP + Processor + Workflow bundle.

Key Notes : > Insight Print Communications provides Parth a KODAK TRENDSETTERQ400 with PRINERGY bundle. > The other logical step was to upgrade from a used machine to a new Komori Enthrone 29 press; also provided by Insight. > KODAK’s T-MDE plate processor facilitates regular wet processing of KODAK plates.

investment in KODAK’s CTP + Processor + Workflow bundle. SQUAREspot thermal imaging, KODAK’s industry-leading imaging technology, is the driving factor behind KODAK CTP which delivers consistent 2400 dpi throughput.

Based in Indore, Shree Parth Graphics signed with Insight Print Communications to purchase a KODAK TRENDSETTERQ400 with PRINERGY bundle, and added FM screening and PRINTLINK to power their pre-press and setup a seamless plate-making operation. They also have KODAK’s T-MDE plate processor for regular wet processing of KODAK plates.

The other logical step was to upgrade from a used Heidelberg machine to a new Komori Enthrone 29 press. Purchased through Insight Print Communications, this was another big step to bring more value into the chain of operations. The dependency of maintaining a used machine and frequent breakdowns was eliminated with the Enthrone 29. Moreover, with the free-flowing production and flawless operation of their new Komori press, they now have consistent production with minimum manpower required to support the process and execute jobs.

With a background in design, having a complete pre-press solution in-house was critical since Subhash Soni understood the importance of high-LPI printing for better quality output. The sustainability of print and business, durability of the equipment and the ability to perform in the most challenging print environments, combined with the need to have a future-looking technology on board, prompted the

With the seamless connect between pre-press and press, KODAK’s PRINTLINK aids in generating CIP3 compliant files that define ink-key settings for the plate, greatly reducing make-ready time. The overall quality of print is also enhanced by taking advantage of KODAK FM Screening or Staccato, generating high-fidelity, continuous tone and extended colour gamut images that are free of any visible artefacts.

Heavily into commercial printing jobs, Shree Parth Graphics turns around designs with an in-house team as a first step, also doing job work at times, and provides a turnkey solution –concept-design-printdeliver – owing to their top of the line finishing equipment, creating and end-to-end operation that strives to delight customers. A Canon digital equipment complements the printing setup by catering to short-run digital jobs. With a 100% in-house setup for pre-press, press, post-press and digital, Shree Parth Graphics has achieved a higher level of client satisfaction since they have complete control along every step in the quality process. Security of design and print jobs is another big benefit. Put together, this translates into peace of mind to Subhash Soni, his team and his customers. A complete service provider, Shree Parth Graphic is now pushing the envelope to print better and cater to even greater market needs. The next generation at Shree Parth Graphics is already deeply involved in sustainably growing the print business, with Nikhil Soni handling the entire production and process departments, and Parth Soni contributing with expertise in graphics concept design. In fact, Parth Soni is quite the design protégé with 19 international brand identity design contests in his kitty. The addition of latest equipment and technologies is what drives Shree Parth Graphics to add more productivity by delivering system-driven performance over a more manual process with constant intervention. The Insight Print

Communications team has not only sold and installed the KODAK CTP, Processor, Workflow and Komori Press, but also supports the site for their service needs,

giving a truly one-stop-shop experience for their pre-press and post-press and ensure they deliver the excellent service value that they are known for.

The emotive advancement of the successful key visual originally developed for drupa 2016 put the industry in the right mood for the event in 2020. The design concept, implemented by Agentur Niehaus Knüwer and friends, refers to the dramatic changes the industry has encountered during the past few years: the new key visual signifies beauty, aesthetic appeal, creativity and depth. Sabine Geldermann, Director of drupa and Global Head Print Technologies at Messe Düsseldorf, explains the key visual’s exquisite appearance and tactile effect: „The delicate butterfly wings symbolize departure, change – a transformation process that affects all industries, but particularly the traditional print industry, every company, everybody. Transformation moves companies to rethink their strategies, adapt to new processes and move into new business models – a change that also takes place in people’s minds. Different individuals have already moved into the focus of the new marketing campaign. On the one hand, it underlines the international alignment of the drupa trade fair, on the other, it shows that trade fairs stand for emotive power and experience and, last but not least, it shows that ”people are business”. The heads are surrounded by colour digits that symbolize the wide variety of print applications. Below the slogan

“embrace the future” you find the drupa 2020 invitation extended to exhibitors and visitors, who are welcome to experience and accept technological innovation, trends and future challenges, so as to implement them into their own corporate workflows and tap into new potential.“ With this strategy, drupa 2020 will write a new chapter in the 2016 success story and prove once again that no other event in this industry has a stronger international attraction and radiance. drupa 2020 will continue this strategic realignment and focus on future topics with major growth potential. The trade fair profile prescribes a clearly defined structure, which encompasses the following product groups 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

Prepress / Print Premedia /Multichannel Post press / Converting / Packaging Future Technologies Materials Equipment / Services / Infrastructure

Highlight topics: packaging production, functional printing, 3D printing, industrial printing In the wake of growing international markets and increasingly demanding requirements from the industry and manufacturers of branded products, the packaging production segment has again been selected as one of the most important topics for drupa 2020. Technological developments in packaging and labelling have engendered innovative solutions in the areas of customizing and personalization, while technologies such as smart and intelligent packaging, packaging design

pressideas/ commercial printing

and finishing have become increasingly important. All of these developments are changing the industry. In order to assume an active and successful role in this competitive market, companies need to stay informed about the new technologies that many exhibitors will show at drupa 2020. At drupa 2020, packaging will have a special slot called Touchpoint Packaging. Launched at drupa 2016, this forum created quite a stir. It is organised and hosted in close cooperation with the European Packaging Design Association (epda), Europe’s

leading association of brand and packaging designers. It will cover the entire packaging production chain from the brand, materials, design, print right through to finishing and sales. The interaction between all involved professions – branded products manufacturers, designers, material manufacturers and a high-calibre panel of companies from the printing and finishing industry – will turn this forum into a special place of inspiration where solutions and answers to relevant questions for future developments will be presented. The future will become tangible in all its

facets, and the focus will be on all that is new, unconventional and surprising. An event titled AMAZING, INSPIRING, EXCITING and UNEXPECTED hosted by Best Cases, innovative technology applications and visionary packaging solutions for different markets welcome visitors to an interactive brainstorming session with exhibitors. The forum addresses interested manufacturers of branded products and designers as well as companies from the packaging segment, who are provided with an opportunity to join the Touchpoint Packaging team. In addition to experienced professionals we also welcome young talented people from all related areas and professions. Among the other highlight topics showcased at drupa 2020 are subjects such as functional printing, 3D printing and industrial printing. These areas of application have major potential and therefore provide important new markets. The related technologies are also extremely important for the global packaging market, as they provide intelligent packaging with additional functions, while different printing technologies allow the use of a wide range of printing substrates. In the segment of industrial printing, the trade fair will focus on major issues such as “artificial intelligence” and “robotics”, new workflows in the production process and the “next generation of industry 4.0” as all of these will have a major impact on the workplace and industry environment. drupa 2020 – no. 1 for printing technologies – will present all technical processing methods for the global printing and media industry as well as for the packaging industry. Werner Matthias Dornscheidt, Chairman and CEO of Messe Düsseldorf, is convinced: “With the innovative products presented by our international exhibitors and the extensive supporting programme, drupa 2020 will set new trends. It inspires markets and vertical industries and as such, it provides exceptional networking opportunities, chances and ideas for excellent business deals. drupa focuses on the industry’s innovative force, provides pioneering technologies with a platform for highlight topics and presents an extensive supporting programme – i.e. the “Touchpoints”, the “drupa cube” and the “dip” – that encourages the transfer of knowledge and dialogue. No other event is more relevant for the entire industry.”

High interest in innovative barrier papers at Interpack 2017 New Sappi Guard packaging papers with integrated barrier properties drew strong visitor interest Four years ago, Sappi was the world’s first manufacturer to present a new speciality paper with a mineral oil barrier integrated directly in the paper, as well as including heat sealing properties. The company’s long-standing technical expertise and investments in the development of new innovative products and sustainable packaging solutions are paying off. The latest innovations from the Sappi Guard product line were presented to trade visitors at Interpack 2017, where they attracted a great deal of interest. Sappi’s paper-based packaging solution with an integrated barrier against mineral oil is intended for both outer and inner packaging. Its original application was dry foodstuffs such as pasta, rice, cereals, pudding powder, tea, and much more; and that remains the case today. What’s more, thanks to good heat-sealing properties, these recyclable packaging materials also represent an alternative to PE packaging which offers good sealing properties but does not have any mineral oil barrier. Sappi has jointly developed another exciting paper-based packaging solution in collaboration with the Belgian chocolate producer Delafaille. This solution has grease and mineral oil barriers and also prevents the ingress of oxygen and water vapour,

and is being used with the company’sluxury Amusette chocolate brand. The brand needed a paper type that could be used with no additional foil lamination or adhesive, minimising the production costs involved. As part of the world’s largest packaging trade fair, Sappi also presented initial results of the recently announced cooperation agreement between Sappi and Felix Schoeller. The two companies have developed a paper-based,

sealable packaging solution with high-barrier properties against water vapour, oxygen and grease. At Interpack 2017, Sappi was also presented with the international WorldStar Packaging Award for foodstuffs. This award for Sappi’s Guard papers follows hot on the heels of its receipt of the 2016 German Packaging Award in the “New Materials” category.

The Straits Times and WAN-IFRA to hold conference on fighting fake news The growing use of social media platforms as a main source of information has also facilitated the emergence of a myriad “alt-facts” or “alt-truths” filter bubbles, which tend to isolate and confuse people. WAN-IFRA and The Straits Times – Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) group – are jointly organising a two-day event aimed at checking misinformation in Asia. The forum and workshops will be held on June 19 and 20 at the Singapore Management University. Mr K. Shanmugam, Minister for Home Affairs and Minister for Law, will deliver the opening address. The rise of fake news has become a pressing danger to modern societies. From deliberate hoaxes created to cause mischief, manipulate opinions and votes or make money, to media outlets re-circulating unverified or erroneous content, the misinformation ecosystem can take on many different faces. The growing use of social media platforms as a main source of information has also facilitated the emergence of a myriad “alt-facts” or “alt-truths” filter bubbles, which tend to isolate and confuse people.

“Democracies have an interest in ensuring that they have media organisations that meet voters’ needs for reliable information, to help them make good choices. This forum will delve into how these interests are best served today.”

Key Notes : > A joint two-day event aims to check misinformation in Asia. > The rise of fake news – a pressing danger to modern societies. > Objective of coming up with concrete initiatives for fighting the spread of misinformation and improve media literacy in Asia.

26

May 2017

The two-day event is one of the initiatives being taken by WAN-IFRA to address the crucial issues surrounding the relationship between publishers and social platforms. The event in Singapore will bring together media publishers, journalists, policymakers, industry players and other stakeholders with the objective to come up with concrete initiatives for fighting the spread of misinformation and improve media literacy in Asia. “The spread of fake news around the world is focusing minds on the need for good, credible and reliable journalism. Media organisations have an interest in retaining the trust of their readers,” says Mr Warren Fernandez, Editor-in-Chief of the English, Malay and Tamil Media group (EMTM) of Singapore Press Holdings. “Democracies have an interest in ensuring that they have media organisations that meet voters’ needs for reliable information, to help them make good choices. This forum will delve into how these interests are best served today.” “Universities like SMU, too, have an important role to play through education and research. We can impart to students the skills in critical thinking and analysis, to be circumspect and be able to discern credible sources of information from non-credible ones, and to be open to diverse views for a more balanced perspective” comments SMU President, Professor Arnoud De Meyer. “Our students are also required to take a course in ethics so that they will be better at identifying and tackling various issues. Through

research, our faculty can work on understanding social norms and how people can be motivated to value truth and the veracity of information.” Ms Lynn McDonald, High Commissioner of Canada and Mr Ian Wilson, President of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce say: “The fake news phenomenon affects us all. Addressing this issue require strong, ongoing collaboration between governments and the private sector. It is critical that we work together to preserve the integrity of news and information.”

Programme “Keep it Real: Truth and Trust in the Media” is organised in partnership with The Canadian High Commission, Facebook, Google, Konrad Adenauer Foundation (KAS), the National Library Board and the Singapore Management University (SMU). The event is open to the general public. On Day 1 (June 19), the conference will look at practical fact-checking projects from Asia and around the world. Speakers will also offer a series of presentations and take part in panel discussions on what internet companies, journalism schools, government agencies and independent organisations are doing to improve media literacy and provide societies with reliable facts that enable well informed, constructive public debates. On Day 2, selected participants will split into three workshops to discuss and identify concrete factchecking measures and projects, including media literacy programmes and the legal and regulatory framework to tackle misinformation. One part of WAN-IFRA task force’s effort is a new report for publishers on Facebook monetisation - i.e. both direct and indirect revenue associated with the social platform. Debates on fake news and the role of social platforms will take center stage at the upcoming WAN-IFRA’s World News Media Congress to be held in Durban, South Africa, from 7 to 9 June.

Laritryck makes double Mark Andy investment Mark Andy technology with Performance series Flexo and Digital series presses chosen by one of the leading Swedish label converters. Swedish label converter LariTryck AB invested heavily at the recent Mark Andy Open House in Warsaw. Looking to add to his existing flexo capacity, which already includes three Mark Andy Performance Series P7 and two 2200 presses located at plants in Nässjö and Bjuv, CEO Johan Ripa placed an order for a fourth P7, this time one of the second generation presses with an enhanced platform to be more responsive and productive. But, he didn’t stop at the P7 and went on to place an order for a new Mark Andy Digital Series inkjet hybrid press platform. Commenting on his $2m spending spree, Ripa said: “The Mark Andy P7 presses have allowed us to grow our business year on year by 15% so we urgently need extra flexo capacity. But when I watched the live demonstration of the Digital Series I could immediately see how it could open opportunities for us in new markets. Of all the manufacturers of digital print technology, Mark Andy has the best understanding of

the label market, and I am excited about our prospects with the Digital Series hybrid press.” Speaking for Convertec, Mark Andy’s agent in Scandinavia, Joakim Marcusson commented: “LariTryck has been a long-term Mark Andy user and always invested in the best technology we have to offer – but to secure a P7 flexo order and Digital Series at the same time was a real bonus, and will undoubtedly move Johan Ripa and his team up to the next level of excellence.” The servo-driven P7 is Mark Andy’s top-ofthe-range flexo press, and the 6-colour UV machine ordered by LariTryck has a 430mm web width and will be fitted with a corona treater and web cleaner, chill drums for handling unsupported films, delam/relam, cold foil, and Mark Andy’s award winning QCDC (Quick Change Die Cut) system. It is due for delivery in June 2017 and had only an eight-week lead time from order placement, which proved decisive.

The Digital Series specification mirrors that of the demonstration machine in Warsaw, which has a 330mm web width, one flexo unit before Mark Andy’s own CMYK+White inkjet module and two flexo units after, leading to a QCDC module – the concept being to print and convert inline in one pass. According to Timo Donati, Mark Andy’s Area Sales Manager for Scandinavia: “The Digital Series is capable of high quality printing, decorating, and converting in a single pass at consistent speeds of 76m/min, making it the most productive narrow web flexo/inkjet hybrid available, with an excellent ROI.” The Digital Series, and a full complement of Mark Andy flexo and digital technologies, are available for live demonstrations on site at the company’s USA headquarters in Chesterfield, Missouri, as well as in the European headquarters show room in Warsaw, Poland.
