Kodak sustainable products to expand its Global Literacy Program 2018 Kodak to use sustainable technology to provide books and school supplies to high-needs communities around the world. Kodak is creating a volunteer printer network that will produce thousands of children’s books and school supplies in 2018 to benefit some of the world’s most disadvantaged populations, using sustainable Kodak printing products, such as KODAK SONORA Process Free Plates. “It’s wonderful to see printers signing up across the globe to participate in Kodak’s Print for Good program,” said Richard Rindo, General Manager Sales, Print Systems Division, Vice President Eastman Kodak Company. “Participating printers are using Kodak’s sustainable technology to print and donate quantities of approximately 2,000 or more pieces of original children’s book titles or school notebooks. Those books and school supplies will be distributed in different geographies through on-the-ground partnerships with literacy organizations, schools and local non-profit groups.”

Last year, Print for Good placed more than 30,000 books and printed materials into the hands of thousands of children in communities throughout Europe, the United States, Latin America, Asia and the Middle East.

Last year, Print for Good placed more than 30,000 books and printed materials into the hands of thousands of children in communities throughout Europe, the United States, Latin America, Asia and the Middle East. The program also:

• •

Donated funds to help build a library in an allgirls Haitian orphanage Provided prayer booklets that were delivered to children in need during the 2017 Passover holiday in Israel Hosted book-signing events and book drives spanning the globe

The Print for Good initiative also saw Kodak employees in the company’s facilities around the world volunteer to support their own community literacy initiatives, including participation in local school reading programs. According to Rindo, printers are joining the effort from every major sales territory. “They are volunteering to join Kodak in 2018 to share the printed word in support of literacy, and help to build stronger communities,” he said. This year, Kodak will also establish a new partnership with Room to Read, a global non-profit focused on literacy and girls’ education in low-income countries. Working with Room to Read, Kodak will support the establishment of Room to Read’s Literacy Program at

a primary school in Rajasthan, India, bringing the community access to a safe and childfriendly learning environment, with books in the children’s local language, as well as teachers and librarians who are trained in the best practices of reading and writing instruction. To ensure the longevity and success of the program, Kodak and Room to Read will work closely to build strong community and government partnerships. “There are millions of children who need high-quality education interventions around the world. Our partnership with Kodak allows us to deepen Room to Read’s impact in India and tackle illiteracy head-on in the state of Rajasthan,” said Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Geetha Murali. “Kodak’s support will contribute to our impact on the lives of 270,000 children in India through our Literacy Program, enabling them to reach their full potential and change the direction of their future.” Kodak is making multiple original designs and narrative children’s stories available to its Print for Goodprinter network in the coming months, both through the existing Room

to Read archive and through a partnership with renowned designer and children’s book author, Tad Carpenter. Carpenter will be creating an exclusive 18-page illustrated book, sponsored by Kodak, on the topic of sustainability – highlighting how kids around the world can help conserve water, save energy and reduce pollution. “At Kodak, we view sustainability through

the lens of the ‘triple bottom line’ otherwise known as People, Planet and Profits,” said Rindo. “Promoting our sustainable portfolio, including our process free plates is good for the planet. Improving global literacy is good for people and the communities in which Kodak lives and operates. And, all this activity drives the value of print and the longevity of the print industry – in every sense, it’s Print for Good!”

Saphira by Heidelberg: Consumables that increase productivity Over 10 years, Saphira has established itself as a quality brand increasing customers’ productivity.

The birthday cake went down well – together with customers from all over the world, Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) celebrated the tenth anniversary of the “Saphira” brand.

Key Notes : > Customers around the world rely on tailored quality and are delighted by the impressive results. > A comprehensive portfolio of products and strong partners. > Growth market for Heidelberg – new offers like subscription and omni-channel models.

12

May 2018

With Saphira, Heidelberg offers an extensive portfolio of high-quality consumables, both for everyday print jobs and special applications, as well as all production requirements for prepress, press and postpress. All consumables were optimized and tested specially for use in Heidelberg solutions. They help the user to exploit the full scope of performance of his machines and to achieve highquality printing results. “The Saphira products fully meet our requirements”, confirms Benn Murphy, Managing Director of Clarke Murphy Print in Sydney, Australia. The full-service print shop has put its faith in the Heidelberg machines and also orders all its consumables, as well as additional service and spare parts from Heidelberg. “We see Heidelberg as a onestop-shop and are impressed by the high quality and reliability of the Saphira products.” The AZ Druck und Datentechnik GmbH print shop in Kempten, Germany, has been working with Saphira products such as plates, inks, pressroom chemicals and printing supplies for many years. “We appreciate the knowhow that is contained within Saphira products and we know that everything can be processed perfectly on our machines”, confirms Sebastian Aufter, Operations Manager at AZ Druck und Datentechnik. At the same time, the Saphira products meet all industry standards for the protection of the

environment and, overall, contribute considerably to the level of investment security of the equipment used. The ECO product line, which meets the strictest environmental protection criteria of the printing industry, should be particularly highlighted in this regard. Simpsons Printing in Rapid City, USA, installed a Suprasetter A75 and orders the chemicalfree Saphira ND 100 plate. “We can now do without the darkroom all chemicals and water, and can image directly on the plate”, explains Vice President Jonathan Simpson. The environment is protected and costs are reduced. Furthermore, besides the Saphira products, Heidelberg also offers consumables of other providers under their own brands.

Portfolio in growth segment is consistently expanded In 2008, Heidelberg took over the special print vanish manufacturer Hi-Tech Coatings International with production locations in Zwaag (Netherlands) and Aylesbury (England), supplemented by license production in Australia, India, and in the Middle East, and with its own coating production facility in Taylor (USA).

develops custom solutions for specific applications. Its range already includes 2,500 coating formulations for special and standard applications. More and more Heidelberg customers around the world are ordering the Heidelberg Saphira coatings and other consumables online. Around 2,300 of these customers are already registered and active in the Heidelberg Online Shop – and the trend is increasing.

An attractive growth segment – expandable with subscription and omni-channel models

As a next step, the Belgian printing chemicals provider Blueprint Products NV was acquired in 2014. In 2017, Heidelberg took over the coatings and pressroom chemicals business of its strategic partner Fujifilm Europe B.V. in the EMEA region. Heidelberg thus achieved a market share of around ten percent in the pressroom chemicals sector in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. The acquisition adds to the Heidelberg offering of environmentallyfriendly Saphira printing chemicals provided by its subsidiary BluePrint. In addition, it strengthens the business with Saphira coatings, which Heidelberg has combined with its subsidiary Hi-Tech Coatings, in particular to meet increasing customer requirements in digital printing and in the growing packaging printing sector. Consequently, Heidelberg is positioned among the top five largest suppliers worldwide in the coatings sector. Heidelberg

The global market for consumables exceeds eight billion euros. Heidelberg currently has a market share of around five percent. By 2022, Heidelberg intends to considerably increase sales growth in the area of consumables through subscription and omni-channel models as well as digital transformation. As a key component, Saphira supports both models. With the subscription or operator model, Heidelberg supplies a “smart” complete system, consisting of machines, services, consumables and software, installs it and supports the management of production. Heidelberg retains ownership of the production system and makes sure that the printing process runs optimally with maximum availability. The customer pays per printed sheet. The omni-channel model links the machine data with order transactions, enabling proactive delivery. With the “Heidelberg Digital Unit”, Heidelberg has launched a new competence center for digital marketing and eCommerce that will, above all, also serve the growing consumables market. Last fall, the Consumables and Services divisions at Heidelberg were merged to form the new Lifecycle Solutions division. The new division will offer customers additional solution packages beyond the existing product portfolio, including services, application know-how and consumables, over the entire lifecycle of the machine. In this way, the customer improves his competitiveness and is ready for his next investment. “In the future we want to be a strong partner for our customers with our digital technologies and networked

14

May 2018

systems”, explains Dr. Frank Schaum, Head of the Lifecycle Solutions division. “In the digital age, the focus is much more on customer benefit for the business model, and less on the product. In this way, we help our customers to significantly increase productivity through a coordinated range of consumables and systems, enable maximum availability through preventive maintenance, and simplify the procurement and logistics of consumables. Our subscription models give our customers more freedom to take care of their business.”

New coatings for a variety of finishing options Since April, customers can order three additional types of coating from Heidelberg: Saphira Hybrid-Coating H1505 Extra Matt, Saphira Coating W7501 Super HG 1 Side and Saphira Coating W7509 HG 2 Side for a maximum gloss level of dispersion coating for single-sided or double-sided coating. Saphira Hybrid-Coating H1505 Extra Matt is an extra matt hybrid coating system with a very matt, homogeneous surface combined with maximum abrasion and scratch resistance. The coating is dried with hot air and develops its characteristic properties thanks to the subsequent UV curing. The surface effect is comparable to UV matt coating with extremely easy and convenient processing. H1505 ensures costeffective production thanks to high machine productivity. It is characterized by the very high resilience of the surface, which reliably prevents damage during postpress and transport. Saphira Coating W7501 Super HG 1 Side provides a maximum gloss level of dispersion coating for single-sided coating and impresses with its fast drying in relation to the gloss level. Saphira Coating W7509 HG 2 Side provides a maximum gloss level of dispersion coating for double-sided coating combined with maximum process reliability. Thanks to its very fast drying and extremely good wetblocking resistance, the gluing of sheets or the subsequent blocking of straight printing and perfecting is prevented even with high colour assignment or highly emulsifying spot colours.

Koenig & Bauer and hubergroup to cooperate on conventional Sheetfed Offset Inks Koenig & Bauer recommends the use of conventional Sheetfed Offset Inks from hubergroup for its high-performance Rapida presses. Both companies have agreed on a strategic partnership. The aim of this global partnership is to offer joint users the optimum complete service and quality package. The inks bearing the “Recommended by Koenig & Bauer” quality seal are available from the hubergroup sales network.

Rapida users applying hubergroup inks will benefit from Koenig & Bauer’s experience with these inks. Both partners will continue to evaluate and optimize this package to meet changing market requirements. The result is consistent, repeatable and high quality print products. The process standardization achieves a new quality. Dirk Winkler, head of printing at KBASheetfed, says, “I see particular strengths in the optimum performance and stable inkwater balance. In addition, the combination of press and ink is characterised by very good colour brilliance and high print contrast, a smooth printing and excellent printing of solids. However, the cooperation in the development of new ink systems and their standardization and, of course, the joint support of users, e.g. in the field of food packaging, is crucial.

Thomas Kleps, Head of Sales Europe at hubergroup, emphasizes the advantages of this partnership for print shops: “Our customers have always appreciated hubergroup’s special service in application technology and process optimization. The close cooperation with Koenig & Bauer will further expand this know-how, and our joint customers will directly benefit in the area of business development. They will be guaranteed the same high quality of standard and spot inks in all segments of sheetfed offset printing worldwide – be it commercial, packaging, food packaging or labels”. As with other strategic partners, KBASheetfed works with hubergroup on a global scale in the areas of sales, customer training and product development. In addition, the experts from both companies regularly exchange views in strategy workshops.

Under the K-Supply brand name, Komori offers a lineup of special consumables, materials and equipment that are standard for Komori presses. K-Supply is not just consumables but also printing supplies for high print quality and performance developed with Komori Graphic Technology Center (KGC) knowhow. All exhibit presses will use K-Supply, and products such as K-Supply ink, dampening solution and blankets are standard Komori materials offering highlevel print quality, versatility and economical performance ideal for H-UV printing.

ApressiaMB110E is a high performance Blanking System allowing shifting from manual to automatic operation. The Apressia MB110E mechanizes the blanking process, which is often handled manually, allowing for upto approximately 200 sheets to be simultaneously blanked per job. This helps to reduce labour spent on blanking – a process which, while repetitive, requires skill – allowing for easier creation of production plans through more stable production. Additionally, this reduces problems related to hiring operators during busy periods. Using the Apressia MB110E for production of packaging for goods such as food, cosmetics and medicines also improves sanitation, as products do not need to be touched directly by human hands. The Apressia MB110E can use line data from CAD or design stages to create blanking templates before the blanking process begins, minimizing job switching time and maximizing productivity for a range of jobs from small- to large-lot.

At the exhibition site, new K-Supply products and service products based on three themes – productivity improvement, operation and performance enhancement, and energy saving and environmental solutions – will be shown. Proposals and products meeting the requests of customers, including case studies of retrofitting existing machines with the latest technologies, will be introduced.

KOMORI Ecology Corner Building a mild, bright future where all is balanced each other through their coexistence is the green concept that Komori promotes. We will introduce the building of production environments that incorporate this green concept as well as the current state of product development.

Web Offset/Chambon Corner Komori is developing measures to reduce web offset press energy consumption to the absolute minimum based on an ‘environmentally friendly’ theme. At this IGAS, Komori will introduce ways to greatly reduce

wasteful electric power and gas, mainly options for eco friendly specifications that fit the era.

Currency Press Corner Japanese banknotes printed on Komori currency printing presses are evaluated as the world’s most difficult currency to counterfeit. Komori currency/security presses are also exported to many countries. At this show, you will see both front and back samples of full-size Komori original banknotes together with some explanation of the printing techniques as well as panels showing currency presses for overseas.

Seria Corner In charge of Komori’s printed electronics and precision devices business, Seria has a distinguished record in the electronic parts and screen-printing industries. The Komori booth will show screen-printed printing samples from the automotive, graphics and amusement markets.

Print Gallery The Print Gallery will showcase many different printed pieces showing high added value. There will be display of various printed items offering a competitive edge, such as special printing methods and business model ideas. Printing methods and key points will also be introduced. In digital printing, actual samples from commercial and package printing around the world will be shown.

APP marks 5th Anniversary of its FCP Asia Pulp & Paper celebrates 5 years of its landmark sustainability commitment – the Forest Conservation Policy. Asia Pulp & Paper (APP) recently marked the 5th anniversary of its landmark sustainability commitment, the Forest Conservation Policy (FCP). Under the policy, which was developed with the assistance of NGOs and other partners, APP committed itself to achieving deforestation-free supply chain, and to advance towards becoming a more sustainable business. At an event for stakeholders, APP reviewed the progress it has made since 2013, identified challenges, and restated commitments to areas of continuing effort. The FCP comprises four commitments; to protect natural forests, to better manage peatlands, to partner with local communities, and to implement a sustainable supply chain. Since the FCP was established in February 2013, APP has made substantial progress on many of these commitments, such as: •

Ending natural forest conversion by its pulpwood suppliers, and transitioning to sourcing 100% plantation fibre for its production. Ensuring its supply chain continues to be free from deforestation, robust systems have been implemented and compliances are third-party verified. 0.01% of area impacted by Forest Fires in 2017 out of the total gross area

0.1% natural forest loss rate in APP’s suppliers protected areas by third-party deforestation (Mar 2017 – Jan 2018) 46% of social conflicts has been resolved

APP has also engaged local communities, working collaboratively to improve livelihoods and to transfer knowledge to the villagers on modern, more sustainable, farming techniques. As a result of these programmes, the incidence of third-party deforestation, as well as forest and land fires have been significantly reduced in 2017. “APP today is a very different company since it embarked upon its Forest Conservation Policy journey five years ago. The progress we have made would not have been possible without the support of our technical partners, customers, the Government of Indonesia, and also the NGOs who have both criticised us and encouraged us in equal measure,” said Goh Lin Piao, Managing Director, APP, “While we are proud of what we have achieved together in this time, we also recognise that there is still more work to be done in areas such as land disputes, illegal encroachment, and perhaps most importantly, the issue of rural poverty.” In the five years since implementing the FCP,

APP has invested about USD300 million in forest monitoring systems, landscape restoration, fire prevention and peatland research and community engagement, among others. The company also invested in identifying areas of High Conservation Value and High Carbon Stock, and detailed maps of peatlands, in and around its supplier concessions. This information has been vital in helping APP identify critical landscapes that need to be preserved and protected. Commenting on the FCP progress, APP’s Director of Sustainability and Stakeholder Engagement, Elim Sritaba, said: “Working alongside our partners like The Forest Trust and Deltares, APP has been able to increase its conservation area to over 20% of its supplier’s concession areas, protecting a total of more than 600,000 ha of valuable natural forest. We were also able to identify and retire 7,000 ha of plantation on peatland in order to start better protecting vulnerable forest and peat.” “The Forest Conservation Policy is an ambitious undertaking, but we are making progress. And as we accomplish some of our objectives under the FCP, we are already looking forward and expect to announce a new set of sustainability goals in our Vision 2030 roadmap,” she added. Asia Pulp & Paper (APP), part of Sinar Mas, is a trade name for a group of pulp and paper manufacturing companies in Indonesia and China. APP delivers quality products that meet the global demand for tissue, packaging and paper, with an annual combined pulp, paper, packaging product and converting capacity of over 19 million tons per annum. On any given day, APP’s products find their way into the hands of consumers in various branded forms from all over the world.

Hundreds of employees face unemployment crisis. Government decides to shut down India’s only Postal Printing Press. The Central Government has decided to close down the Postal Printing Press in Bhubaneswar. The country’s only printing press under the Department of Posts has raised apprehensions in the minds of hundreds of employees associated with the Press. During a meeting of committee of secretaries on April 27 in New Delhi, it was decided to close shop with a notice already been sent to the CPMG (Chief Post Master General) of the Odisha Postal Circle on May 9. The authorities directed the department officials in Bhubaneswar not to purchase papers and other items required for printing. They have also asked to send the documents and data of all the employees working at the press to the Centre for rehabilitation. The decision drew sharp criticism from

various bodies including the employees’ union of the printing press, postal officials and others associated with it. The employees’ association of the printing press protested the decision by taking to the streets and urged the state government to intervene in the matter. With the danger of closing of the unit looming large, people directly and indirectly associated with the press – ink, paper, adhesive, waste cotton and other materials suppliers – are very nervous about the outcome. “With the decision to close down the press, our future is uncertain and we don’t know what we will do if it (the decision) is implemented,” says an old employee associated with the closing press. The postal printing press was built in an area of four acre land allotted by Odisha government through IDCO at Mancheswar Industrial Estate in 1987. Initially, the press was functional with 230 employees.

22

May 2018

The number of employees is now 146 following transfer and retirement of the staff subsequently. The press has been printing various products for the postal department like forms, passbooks, account books and other such items. The press houses advanced machines and equipment and skilled staff. There are four printing machines which however meet a part of the department’s printing requirement across the country.

Meccanotecnica: Solutions for Offset Print Finishing Thread sewing and nipping in one process - Exclusive system configuration.

DZA Altenburg increases productivity with investment in new technology with an integrated system of the Meccanotecnica Group.

Key Notes : > The transition to offset printing led to the founding of DZA Druckerei zu Altenburg GmbH. > Aster2000 from Meccanotecnica - the first automatic book sewing machine put into operation in 1996. > asterPRO (complemented with Sistema Pre-loader and Nipping Station) integrates sewing and nipping operations in one process.

May 2018

The Altenburg Printing Works looks back on over 400 years of tradition. It was founded in 1594 by Duke Friedrich Wilhelm of Saxony as the “Fürstlich Sächsischen Officin” in the Hartenfels castle near Torgau. Nearly four centuries later, the transition to offset printing led to the founding of a new printing house under the name DZA Druckerei zu Altenburg GmbH. Today, the company specialising

in production of Art and Architecture books is headquartered in Altenburg, Germany and has an employee strength of around 100 people. The first automatic book sewing machine at DZA Altenburg was put into operation in 1996; an Aster2000 from Meccanotecnica.

pressideas/ newspaper

Two decades later, the time had come for a replacement investment. The new solution had to primarily support the positioning of the house as a fully-integrated printing and binding company – from the data to the finished book. Focal points are art and architecture books, but also other genres, with always high quality in mind.

“The reliability of the new machine did not surprise us, the high and constant quality of the pressed book blocks from the system fully met our expectations and we are very satisfied”, said the master bookbinder (Matthias Löbel) at DZA.

Challenge

The asterPRO incorporates all the cuttingedge technology for automatic book sewing, meaning that the signature handling is customized as never before in order to get a perfectly sewn book block.

DZA Altenburg was looking for a solution capable of providing a constant quality of sewn book block, high productivity and flexibility together with ease of use. Last but not least the solution had to provide a seamless integration between sewing and book block finishing with the nipping station.

The cutting edge technology of asterPRO

a more comfortable and uniform loading. A motorized gripper transfers the contents of each tray onto the hopper incline. Nipping is the ultimate solution when looking for excellence and top quality in book production, especially for high-signature count books. The solution presses the sewn book blocks, reduces the thickness of the spine and makes easier the handling for the remaining finishing operations. Furthermore to minimize the labour force, loading and unloading are less than 2m apart.

The Sistema Pre-Loader increases loading capacity of the feeder by 100 cm, ensuring

Solution One asterPRO complemented with Sistema Pre-loader and Nipping Station.

Results The exclusive benefit of this line is that sewing and nipping operations are integrated in one process. “In terms of flexibility, productivity and ease-of-use, this system configuration with asterPRO was the best available solution on the market for our requirements”, says DZA technical Director Erik Scharf. On average, approx. 90.000 books per month were made over the last half year on the system. One of them was an edition of 64.000 copies of the ‘Documenta Reader’ in 2017.

HP Indigo 20000: Opening a realm of possibilities HP Indigo 20000 Digital Press for labels and packaging opens new avenues for flexible packaging converters, by enabling them to efficiently and profitably cope with changing market demands for shorter runs, more varied SKUs, and customized campaigns.

PRESSIdeas talks with Yoav Lotan - Labels Business Manager, Asia Pacific & Japan, HP Indigo, who shares with our readers the latest HP Indigo technology and the vast application and business avenues it opens for its users.

We met Mr. Yoav Lotan - Labels Business Manager, Asia Pacific & Japan, HP Indigo, at the recent Label Expo South East Asia 2018 held at BITEC, Bangkok. The great Asian event featured about 200 exhibitors with direct representation or by their agents and representatives in the region. We had a chat with Mr. Yoav. They recently installed an HP Indigo 20000 Digital Press at Hutamaki-PPL at Mumbai in India. Yoav considers it a corner stone installation for the Digital Printing industry in the country. “The recent installation of the HP 20000 at Huhtamaki-PPL in India shall be a game changer for the industry in the entire region and especially for India and we note a different positive tone when to talk to brands in the South East Asian Region with this amazing step by HP,” says Yoav.

personalisation way back in Israel and Australia in 2011 and then proceeded to many countries across the globe including Europe in 2013 followed by the USA wherein it took mammoth proportions and now, you are seeing the same in the Indian Subcontinent too,” says Yoav in his typical style.

Yoav has a keen eye and you can well observe it when he speaks about the printing industry, its future and technologies shaping this industry.

The exercise in other countries has made Coke reap many benefits, like more brand visibility, loyalty and new customer addition etc. and so the experiment is being escalated into other markets as well.

According to him, the Coca Cola personalisation project in itself is a milestone for the Digital Printing industry with the enormity of the population, multilinguality and the enormous proportions of the country itself. “We had to sit with Coca Cola people along with the supply chain executives in Delhi for two full days to look tactically into needs of the project and various other permutations and combinations to arrive at a sustainable road map,” he shares.

The India campaign, according to Yoav, in itself is a game changer in terms of sophistication because the

and more to drive the growth of the Digital Industry. The latest machine which does all the above and much more is the HP Indigo 6900 machine which was on display at the show.

team had to segmentise the data according to language (about 12 to start with) and regions. In addition to this, the complex VDP process and the multiple fonts involved did give its own challenges to the team and HP team in fact had to do quite a bit of programming to pull the challenges of automation through.

“The 6000 series of HP Indigo machines is our flagship machine with over 1400 machines installed all across the globe and with the pace at which we are giving solutions, which were thought not possible on the Digital platform, will make it one of the most successful Digital machines ever produced by HP Indigo,” says Yoav.

HP Production Pro for Indigo Labels & Packaging

With an experience of seven and a half years with HP Indigo, Yoav moved to Singapore a year back and presently looks after the Label division business of HP in South East Asia including India. One of his important responsibilities is to support and grow Digital Printing in this area and bring in more awareness about the capabilities of HP Indigo machines, at the same time ensuring that their customers and associates get value for themselves as well as their customers.

The HP Indigo 6900 has a new Digital Front End (DFE) featuring a new HP RIP which is five times faster than the earlier ones; which in turn helps the machine to run more jobs on it than what is possible on others. Users can optimize and control production, increase press utilization with cutting edge RIP capabilities, and expand fleet connectivity by utilizing this new, powerful, scalable and cloud-connected DFE - HP Production Pro for Indigo Labels & Packaging.

Digital Printing answers MoQ and more

In addition to this, the DFE has the complete know-how of Esko colour automating engine integrated thus making a printer’s life more comfortable. “There indeed is no need to actually invent the wheel again. Since we have the subject experts like Esko joining hands with us and we are doing what we do the best – building even more improved and innovative product like the HP Indigo 6900,” continues Yoav.

In Digital Printing, ‘Time’ is of utmost importance and that is the reason for its success too. “The lead time for a Shrink Sleeve Label in the Gravure process would take a minimum of three weeks at the fastest and in Flexo it may take a week. But, in Digital, it is a matter of hours,” says he. “Digital is a platform which needs to be adopted by every printer considering the fact that it is complementary process to a printer who is already in the business of making packaging for their customers,” he emphasizes. “MoQ (Minimum Order Quantity) is not of any consideration when it comes to Digital – whether it is a printer or it is a customer who is in need of packaging, this is a boon,” he adds. Yoav finds Variable Data, Personalisation, fast turnaround, efficiency of production, lower MoQ, availability of different types of inks including silver metallic inks, amazing security features, different coatings available (including inline sealing, digital foiling etc.)

He believes that the DFE was the need of the hour since the market is certainly going to be more complex with the customer going to get even more demanding, there would be more SKUs for the clients and that increases the number of jobs in the market and they are going to be more and more complex with more security demands and additional embellishments. All this will certainly put the load on the RIP which can be well taken care of by products equipped with matching efficient technologies including the new DFE.

No one can delete a ‘packaging’ digitally The world is changing rather rapidly and our communications too are changing, be it between the customer and a brand or a

printer and its customer. People are in fact getting more busy online with a barrage of information in mails, SMS’s, social media etc. and online shopping too is getting higher and higher. However, there is not a way that one can delete a ‘packaging’ digitally. Every product bought by us needs to be packaged. There may be different styles and looks, but packaging has to be there, either bought from a local retail store or bought online. The local supermarket or street side stores very much need the eye catching packaging so that the customer gets initiated towards his buying decisions by our nicely displayed store shelves. Packaging has a long, long life indeed! Yoav sees the South East Asian market as one of those markets which will leapfrog to a status which we never imagined. They learn from the mistakes of the west and take steps to get things in order much faster and in a robust way. The challenges that the Chinese market faces are different from what the market in Philippines faces. Similar is the case with markets of Indonesia and Malaysia. Singapore is a very innovative market; Bangladesh and Vietnam are immensely competitive in the textile business and HP sees growth potential in the TAG, Heat Transfer and RFID businesses. All of them are growing and every growth, whether in retail or in real estate, results in growth in Packaging and that is where the future lies. “Just get to visit a few Seven Eleven stores in Thailand, which you find in every street corner across the country and you would agree what I intend to say,” contends Yoav. Yoav has a very convincing view that a printer should not be waiting for the time to come to invest in a technology but he should take the technology beforehand and reap the benefits as they arrive. “Don’t wait for the market to come to you, my friend; go and find the market,” he proclaims. “And if you are able to find the market, you will be the first one to discover. And, discovery normally gives you an opportunity to price your solutions comfortably. This is how innovation brings profitability,” he further eloborates. Well, Yoav has many success stories to share with the readers of PRESSIdeas and we promise to our esteemed readers that it will all reach in the coming issues of your favourite magazine.

Speaking on the installation, Mr Daisuke Mori, Managing Director – Konica Minolta India, said, “India, as a nation, has been moving at an accelerated pace towards its vision of becoming a digital-first economy, and the print and printing industry needs to evolve in step with the fastchanging market dynamics. At Konica Minolta, we are committed to empowering our valued clients with the solutions they need to capitalise on the massive business opportunities this shift will enable. The first India installation of AccurioJet KM-1 at Dina Color Labs underlines that commitment.” “We are confident that our latest hi-tech solution will help Dina Color Labs to effectively cater to new-age printing requirements in the market and undertake

print jobs which were near impossible to accomplish through traditional printing technologies. Digital is the future of printing and, by installing AccurioJet KM-1, Dina Color Labs has taken a big step towards readying preparing itself for the new, digitally-driven paradigm,” added Mr Mori.

KM-1 – A win-win situation for both Dina Color Lab and customers Dina Color Lab has many firsts to their credit. The latest KM-1 too complements the tradition. “Every

machine that we have installed over the years has been a path breaking and trend setting first installation,” says Mr. Dinakaran, MD, Dina Color Lab. The KM-1 is one such first installation in India and South East Asia region by the company.

as it will not only help us optimise our current printing operations, but also enable us to explore various new printing applications to stay ahead of the competitive curve.”

Dina Colour lab established in 1991 as a partnership firm dealing in photographic goods. With an impressive growth graph Dina expanded to multisphere organisation and currently operating as a group of companies with turnover of 200 crores along with its sister concerns. Having headquarters at Chennai, Dina has 7 branches mostly in southern part of India. Expanding their periphery of business Dina is presently into photographic supplies, FMCG distribution of Indian as well as Indus International brands, sale of cameras and accessories, printing supplies, agricultural product, chain of restaurants and many more.

According to him, KM-1 has clear advantages for their customers. “KM-1 serves the business of four of our divisions – first the photo segment. We can now print photos on bigger sheets of size 18 x 24 – for non tearable and 20 x 30 – for wedding albums. Thus our customers can get bigger prints at lesser costs and our productivity increases by 50%. Thus it’s a win-win situation for both of us. The photographer who prints a wedding album can now deliver a better quality, bigger size album to the end user at a better margin. For the end customer, due to the high quality of prints, they can retain these precious moments in their life for more than 40 years,” adds Dinakaran.

Dinakaran’s excitement regarding his latest installation is pretty evident: “Over time, we have witnessed a growing demand for shortrun, print-on-demand UV printing, but there wasn’t any solution which catered to this specific requirement. Coming equipped with unique UV inkjet technology, Konica Minolta AccurioJet KM-1 addresses this major needgap. We are delighted with this installation,

“For commercial printers, the standard size available till now is 13 x 19. This is the maximum size available in digital print. Here comes the difference of printing on B2 Plus size with KM-1, which offers 50% bigger size prints. For Book printing, it is normally on single colour or mono print and not colour prints. With KM-1 we can print colour books on demand. For Offset, KM-1 is the only

option for printing short run jobs of even 200 prints. Printers can just wait, get their jobs printed and take instant delivery, which is not possible with Offset. This machine can handle up to 100 such jobs per day,” he continues. In Digital, Dina prints around 10 to 12 lakh sheets per month and in Photo it prints approximately 7 lakhs sheets per month. “With KM-1 our print output in terms of square meter and colour printing output will increase, thereby increase our turnover as well,” foresees Dinakaran.

The cutting-edge AccurioJet KM-1 technology – Another first in Dina’s tradition of acquiring firsts With respect to the print size, media and compatibility, Konica Minolta’s cutting-edge AccurioJet KM-1 UV Inkjet press offers a far better business proposition than other competitive machines, according to Mr. Ashok Sethi of Konica Minolta. The solution comes with a B2+ sheet-fed inkjet press, and is equipped with the company’s patented UV inkjet technology. It can print a staggering 3,000 sheets per hour in simplex mode and 1,500 sheets per hour in duplex mode, while also eliminating the need to use special digital stocks or expensive coatings. It can handle oversized B2+ sheets of up to 585x750mm, with piezo shear technology fitted in pairs to offer true 1,200 x 1,200 dpi resolution. Konica Minolta has also provided its Web to Print solution to Dina Colour lab to ensure 24X7 availability to its customers through an additional communication channel.

registration accuracy, enabled by a gripperto-gripper Offset technology. Its proprietary KM controller for the servers also enables excellent ripping quality at par with the machine’s rated speed. Dinakaran is all praises for Konica Minolta machines: “In our business, we have invested heavily in Konica Minolta machines. With respect to KM-1, the feature that attracted us most was its print size. This bigger size prints allow better margins for us as well as our customers and resellers of the printed products. The second aspect was Konica Minolta’s Advance UV Inkjet Technology, which enables faster, high quality printed outputs, not only for photo prints but

for all applications like packaging etc. No other machine offers UV Inkjet technology!” “The Digital Print Market is growing by 15 to 20% year on year. Digital print technology in India is improving day by day; it depends on whom you associate with. If you are with Konica Minolta, then you grow!” he emphasises. Its unique value proposition, allows AccurioJet KM-1 to cater to the specific requirements of multiple commercial print and packaging applications. Besides, it also eradicates the requirement of pre/ post printing processes to substantially reduce turnaround times and operational

expenditures for printing business. Consequently, the innovative solution has already garnered significant appreciation across the globe. Konica Minolta has drawn up plans to achieve double digit growth in its digital industrial printing business unit in India. With a current market share of 3 to 4 percent in the country, the plan is to double the share this fiscal. Whereas, the target by 2020 is set at 10 percent. Along with the flagship AccurioJet KM-1, the focus for Konica will be its other top models like MGI Jetvarnish 3D and 4-colour label printers.

be of great interest to customers. Similarly, costing for colour book printing too is going to be revolutionised with attractive pricing enabled by KM-1 at Dina. It will be able to offer a better pricing option than existing popular click charge models. Moreover, Dina is also providing machines to corporates on a rental basis.

Now equipped with innovative capabilities of KM-1, Dina Color Lab is planning to soon launch a franchise model across the state of Tamil Nadu; it will begin with district level franchise for photo jobs. Another pricing

model includes collecting jobs, getting them accomplished by the same day and getting it delivered by next day at customers’ door. The pricing will be almost similar to existing commercial digital print pricing and would

As for quality, the Inkjet UV inks are longer lasting that other technologies like toner prints. Apart from better fade resistence, the quality of output from KM-1 is much better than toner prints and as a result, Dinakaran seems very impressed from both the matte as well as glossy finishes of his photo prints. “Even the first print of a job is sellable which keeps the wastage to a bare minimum,” concludes Dinakaran with a winning smile.

Cosmo Films, the global player providing films for packaging, labelling & lamination applications and synthetic paper has declared its financial results for the quarter ended March 31, 2018. In Q4 FY18, the Company achieved the highest ever quarterly sales volume (up 14% YoY) primarily on the back of near to

full capacity utilization of the BOPP line commissioned in February 2017. Commodity film margins remained subdued negating the favourable impact of volume increase. For the full year, sales volume grew by 25% but lower commodity films margins wiped out more than whole of the gains of the volume increase. PAT and EPS dropped further due

to higher interest and depreciation of the new BOPP line commissioned last year. One-time tax reversal due to recent change in Income Tax Act enabled to partially mitigate the drop in PAT and EPS. Commenting on the financial performance of the company Mr. Pankaj Poddar, CEO, Cosmo Films said, “We continue to focus on expanding specialty which has grown by 20% YoY and full utilization of capacity. While BOPP film margins continued to be volatile, our continuous focus on improving operational efficiencies helped in maintaining EBIDTA level.” Established in 1981, Cosmo Films today is a global provider of speciality films for packaging, lamination and labeling applications. Its films offerings include biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) films, cast polypropylene (CPP) films and soon to be offered biaxially oriented polyethylene terephthalate (BOPET) films. It is the largest exporter of BOPP films from India and is also the largest producer of thermal laminating films in the world with plant cum distribution centres in the U.S, Korea & Japan and global channel partners in more than seventy countries.

Nyala LED for Boran Reklam: Opening new path to Europe Developing solutions for outdoor advertising and many other areas, the company aims to open up to the European market with the power of Nyala LED. Boran Reklam, investing in the Nyala LED digital printer in order to transition into industrial grade production, has thus achieved the flexibility, productivity and strength they desire. Pigment Reklam, one of the leading UV printing solutions providers in the digital printing and advertising industry, has achieved yet another sales success with Nyala LED, which appeals to a rich application field. Boran Reklam, which continues its production in digital printing and advertising at its Kurtköy Istanbul facility, has expanded its market target to Europe by investing in Nyala LED.

“Nyala LED contributes significantly to productivity and manufacturing cost as it draws energy to the lowest level, as well as the heat applied to the media. We get more economical printing costs. At the same time, our printing speed increased with our printing quality.” - Uğur Toprak

With its 3.2x2 meter flatbed structure, Nyala LED offers amazing flexibility and productivity, and can process any media. Even heat-sensitive materials can be printed on thanks to its superior LED technology. Nyala LED, which reaches speeds of 206m2 per hour, is the industrial segment flagship model of the new generation LED series of swissQprint. The LED lamps of Nyala LED, which have a durable and long life structure, have the same life time as the machine. Therefore, maintenance and spare parts need are minimized.

Nyala LED – chosen for growth Wanting to expand its domestic market growth towards export markets, Boran Reklam, preferred Nyala LED digital printer for its industrial production

power. Boran Reklam firm official Uğur Toprak explained the investment processes as follows; “Actually we already had a UV printer. But we felt the need to transition into industrial printing to respond to increasing and diverse demands. We were looking for a machine that can provide fast, quality solutions. When we went to the FESPA Hamburg last year, we had a chance to look closely at the new UV LED solutions at the swissQprint booth. We have foreseen this technology carrying us to the industrial level in terms of printing and speed. We have made the investment decision as a result to sample printing and their positive results.” Saying that they knew Pigment Reklam before investing in Nyala LED, Toprak reminded that their dialogue has improved even more at FESPA Hamburg. Toprak; “We had a very positive meeting with Pigment Reklam firm owner Mr. Serkan Çağlıyan, and we were impressed by his warm approach. We have seen that investing with Pigment Reklam will

be good. From this point on, we believed in Pigment Reklam. Thus, Nyala LED investment decision that is already at work in our facility has been taken.”

Getting economy, efficiency, speed and quality Uğur Toprak, who said that he is a special interest in digital printing technologies, explained that as a company, they examined the machines as much as possible in the investment process. Drawing attention to the advantages of swissQprint’s LED technology, Toprak; “Nyala LED contributes significantly to productivity and manufacturing cost as it draws energy to the lowest level, as well as the heat applied to the media. We get more economical printing costs. At the same time, our printing speed increased with our printing quality. With the modifications it is possible

to further increase the printing speed. Nyala LED from swissQprint is the right solution because it meets our industrial printing goals. Underlining the fact that they realized their goal of transitioning into the industrial level with Nyala LED, Toprak voiced that the variety of prints have increased with the strength and flexibility they have gained. Toprak, indicating that they could print roll-to-roll, showed that they could print the necessary Bergler fabric for the production of illuminated textile casks as an example. Indicating that they also have the print qualities of outdoor prints that are nearly at the same level as indoor print qualities, Toprak described Nyala LED as ‘speed, quality and productivity’.

Targeting the European Market Noting that advertising and printing industry

market is constantly growing, and they are trying to get a bigger share of this growing market as Boran Reklam, Uğur Toprak has announced plans to grow with sales in the European market rather than the Turkish market in the new era. Toprak continued saying; “We have a reputation and market share in the local market for many years now. With industrial power, our position in the local market will become even stronger. However, our target is European markets now. So as Boran Reklam, we will protect ourselves from Turkey’s fragile market conditions with the European market. We see a serious market potential in Europe. For this reason, 2018 will be a year that we focus entirely on the European market.”

Growth from day one for Boran Reklam Founded in 1994, Boran Reklam serves the outdoor advertising industry with solutions for exterior applications, car wrapping and exhibition and promotion booths. 3D Printing initiates revolutionary healthcare possibilities AIIMS doctors perform first 3D Printed implant hip joint replacement surgery. because the patient had no other choice because of a botched up surgery,” explains Dr. Malhotra.

Doctors at AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Sciences) Delhi have successfully performed a hip joint replacement surgery using a 3D printed medical implant. This first of its kind surgery in the country has been done be a multi-disciplinary team constituting of orthopaedic and vascular surgeons and critical care specialists at the Institute. The surgery was performed on a 40 year old patient who had a badly damaged pelvic bone. The highly complicated procedure took eight long hours and was done on April 25th. Dr. Rajesh Malhotra, Professor and Head of Orthopaedic Department was part of the team of doctors who replaced the patient’s (Amit Bahnot) right hip joint with a near perfect 3D printed implant. “This is the first time anyone in India has used this technology to create a near-perfect implant for a patient,” says Dr. Malhotra. The surgery involved a lot of planning before

46

the final procedure day. The patient had to remain in the ICU for three days post surgery. The doctors further explained how the implant was created. First the defect had to be modelled perfectly then the implant was designed and modelled for replacement. Doctors worked out the dimensions for the implant through a CT scan and fed into a computer to create the perfect fit implant. It needed a lot of work and several attempts of fine tuning before they finally got what could possibly be perfectly supportive and caring for the patient. The most popular among such surgeries is the use of off-the-shelf implants to replace hip joint. In this particular case, since a major part of Bahnot’s pelvic bone was earlier removed in a previous surgery, it became a hard choice to use the off-the-shelf implants to much advantage. “Very few centres around the world use 3D printing technology for creating hip joint implants. We tried it

3D printed implants have obvious advantages over off-the-shelf implants. The key advantages are the technology’s capability to create implants as per individual patient’s need. The modelling and precision printing techniques make the implants near perfect and are one of the most advanced implant creating techniques available. The use of 3D printing in medical industry has a long way to go given the ease, costeffectiveness and ready to use capabilities for the benefit of health and care industry and patients world over.

Kerala government is considering eco friendly alternative of Flex banners All party meeting finds merit in imposing a ban on the use of PVC. With over 1500 flex printing units present across the state, the Kerala government’s take to find an eco-friendly alternative to flex banners is a tough call. The use of flex banners as advertising and promotion of both business as well as political nature is wide spread. The government has already directed all government offices to end the use of plastic products, including disposable glass or plates and the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has banned flex boards. Recently an all party meeting was convened by the government in Thiruvananthapuram and was presided over by K T Jaleel, Minister for Local Self-Governments, Government

of Kerala. The meeting discussed the use of PVC flex for advertisements and concluded with a consensus that there is merit in imposing a ban on the use of PVC flex for advertising in the state. However, the participants also took note of the threat to the livelihoods of thousands of people dependent upon the PVC manufacturing, printing and ancillary industries. K.T. Jaleel said a final decision on the ban would be taken after assessing the feedback to the proposal put forth by a committee constituted to evaluate the impact of the ban. The committee has recommended a ban on single-use PVC flex that produced toxic fumes when burned.

The committee has proposed that the printed material should bear the name of the unit, the printing number and expiry date. The printer would be required to take back the flex from the advertiser after use and hand it over to the material supplier for recycling. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is also referred as the ‘poison plastic’ by some experts for the material’s non biodegradability. The material also doesn’t meet industry standards for reuse or recycling. When burnt, its toxic fumes can even cause cancer and infertility. There is an urgent need in the industry for some 100 percent environment-friendly banner material. Alternative polyethylene material is available in the market and serves the same purpose. It can be printed on same machines but may become slightly costlier for customers.
