Tarun Chopra scores a perfect 100 - India’s only Idealliance G7 Expert trainer for ISO & G7 Certifications. G7 is based on a principle of common grey appearance or shared neutral appearance for all printing systems. “Instead of using TVI to control the final output G7 controls the greys as a basis for process control,” says Idealliance G7 Expert Tarun Chopra, who recently became India’s only Trainer for ISO & G7 Certifications scoring a perfect 100 percent. He achieved the level of G7 Expert certification by demonstrating a thorough knowledge essential to the practice of G7 methodology, and as a G7 Expert, certified by Idealliance, is authorized to perform G7 Master qualifications. Certification period is 2 years from the day of its receipt.

“The future will be played on knowledge turf and not capex or equipment turf. It does not mean that quality equipment is not important; it’s just that Knowledge + Quality Equipment will create winners in future.” - Tarun Chopra

May 2019

Tarun is quite elated after the recent recognition and shares what it really means to be an Idealliance G7 Expert, “Personally, this understanding was long overdue for us. We have been working with the TVI process control systems since 2007 and have done a lot of trainings and setups on that principle. With G7 Expert training we can now do the same for G7 Master i.e., we can train organisations in print industry who prefer G7 system to manage their printing process.”

G7 Expert – qualified and certified to provide training for G7 Masters It is a very special achievement as Tarun scored a

perfect 100%. But for Tarun, it’s a different experience, “A perfect 100 was not the target, we wanted to learn about G7 and I think our previous experience working in the press standardisation domain helped us better understand the concept and that resulted a perfect score.” He thinks the industry is on the tipping point where standardisation will be a requirement for all print related businesses. Being India’s only trainer for ISO & G7 certifications is a big responsibility. “It is not because the clients are asking for it but a standardised process becomes more predictable which results is increased efficiency and cost savings. When we started working on press standardisation and colour management in 2007, we were too early for the market for that time. Over the years standardisation in print has been accepted and is the

pressideas/ commercial printing

Opportunities for G7 standard trained colour experts “It’s a growing market and the demand for qualified experts in any domain will always be there,” predicts Tarun. “The future will be played on knowledge turf and not capex or equipment turf. It does not mean that quality equipment is not important; it’s just that Knowledge + Quality Equipment will create winners in future,” he continues. basis for global business happening in print, brands now only want to work with printers who understand standards and are capable of producing consistent results,” explains Tarun. “We feel as experienced trainers in the domain it is our responsibility to help the industry reap the benefits of process standardisation as a science in print,” he states. Expressing concern over incompetent people offering standardisation services, he says, “It’s unfortunate that over the years incompetent people have started offering process standardisation services to presses just by focusing on “press curves” in the name of print standardisation. Even today most printers don’t understand that “Press Curves or TVI or G7” is a very small part of the entire Process Standardisation, just making curves on the press will not give system wide predictability.” Planning to formalise courses in these certifications, Tarun says they are working on a curriculum for their trainings. “That’s a work in progress, looking at the complexity

10

May 2019

of the entire process, the whole thing could take some time. In the mean while we do undertake theory and/or hands on training sessions for interested clients,” he adds.

Understanding how to manage colour Colour Management is Management of Colour i.e., understanding how to manage colour – from the time it’s conceived, to the time it’s produced – on a printing system; it could be offset, digital or any system responsible for reproducing colour. Standards help in aligning the colour reproduction processes to a known state or universally accepted production parameters. “We feel anyone who is interested in print can benefit with the learnings as far as businesses are concerned. They surely will be able add a lot of value to their clients and will be able to maximise on profits once they understand how simple and effective the system is,” assures Tarun.

Printing industry, calibration and colour standardisation “As far as the Indian market is concerned we have sufficient data to prove that we have better and capable print service providers in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka when it comes to acceptance of standards in print,” reveals Tarun. He says the domestic players aren’t to be blamed for they have failed to identify and work with technically qualified people in the domain of colour management and print standardisation. “We have seen computer resellers, plate resellers doing print standardisation in most of the facilities we have visited which is very unfortunate but a very true depiction of state of affairs of most of the Indian print service providers,” he acknowledges.

Tarun has scored for ISO & G7 certification. G7 is based on a principal of Grey Balance and Tonality whereas ISO is based on TVI’s. Since the operational principals are different, the method of deployment changes. G7’s grey balance is relative to substrate colour and deployed using a process called Neutral Print Density Curve and ISO principally operates using TVI values.

An affordable process To follow G7 procedures in a set-up, capital requirement is for process control across various stages of production i.e., calibrated monitors, controlled lighting, measurement instruments for prepress and printing section etc.; this is independent of G7 or ISO. “If we speak only on press application of G7 process control then it’s a very affordable process which does not need a huge investment with the exception of a measurement instrument and software (though the NPDC can be established using a simple pen and a graph paper),” says Tarun. “The only thing we have been communicating for over 10 years is that a press (or a printing device) is part of a system just focusing on one part will not strengthen the system. Systems can only function smoothly when all the aspects are aligned and functional to a specific production target,” he concludes.

Heidelberg at Print China 2019 – Heidelberg a driving force behind digitization; Chinese customers highly interested in digital solutions.

Heidelberg presented an impressive showcase on digitizing the printing industry at Print China from April 9 to 13 in Guangdong. The event was the largest in its field in the most important growth market for the printing industry. “The interest shown by customers in response to our digital solutions for optimizing the entire system and for developing new business models was very gratifying. It was highly evident at the trade fair that we are also actively driving forward the digitization of our sector with innovative approaches in China,” comments Heidelberg CEO Rainer Hundsdörfer.

“The Chinese printing industry shows a high level of enthusiasm and interest toward new, databased business models, digital platform solutions, and end-to-end digitized value creation chains.”

Topics relating to digital packaging printing, particularly the new “boxuni” web-to-pack platform, proved the most appealing, addressing the interests of packaging designers, print buyers, and packaging manufacturers in a single ecosystem. Some 1,000 people were drawn to the simultaneous open house on this subject at Heidelberg customer Xianjunlong, where both companies jointly demonstrated an endto-end production line for digital packaging printing – starting with the web-to-pack platform, then printing on a Primefire 106 from Heidelberg, and finishing

Another popular highlight was the range of presentations by Heidelberg on the Smart Print Shop and its seamlessly digital workflow, and the opportunities presented by autonomous and navigated printing. The company secured numerous sales contracts throughout the five days of the trade fair for the Speedmaster CX 102 , including the Performance Kit, the Versafire EV digital printing system, and the integrated finishing systems from Heidelberg and

“The Chinese printing industry shows a high level of enthusiasm and interest toward new, databased business models, digital platform solutions, and end-to-end digitized value creation chains,” says Professor Ulrich Hermann, member of the Management Board responsible for Lifecycle Solutions and Chief Digital Officer at Heidelberg. “Even more than anywhere else in the world, Heidelberg benefits in China from its image as the top brand in the industry. This consequently makes it one of the first ports of call for the industry-focused Chinese customers with regard to these relatively new topics as well.”

The government decides not to revive two HPC paper mills - The Liquidation of two state-run paper mills in Assam – the fate of 1200 employees remains undecided. Despite efforts by the Revival Action Committee formed by the unions of both the mills and promises made by state as well as central government at various times, the mills failed to provide work or pay pending salaries to their employees. Recently, the National Company Law Tribunal has ordered the liquidation of two state-run Paper Mills in Assam. With this any hope of the revival of the Cachar Paper Mill and the Nagaon Paper Mill has died despite the workers’ demand and protests that have been going on for many years. The Cachar paper mill has been non-functional since October 2015 and the Nagaon one since March 2017. Both the mills ran under stateowned Hindustan Paper Corporation Limited. With this, the fate of nearly 1200 full-time workers across the two mills too stands undecided. The workers at the two units owned by the central government have not received salaries for more than two years. The service of all employees gets terminated from the date of passing of the order, leaving them in the lurch, undecided whether to go to the office any more or not.

14

May 2019

The agitating employees claim that as many as 55 employees have died and many are on the verge of death due to the hardships caused by the loss of employment. Biswajit Mazumdar, a 35-year-old manager at the Nagaon paper mill had committed suicide by hanging himself at a staff hostel a few days back. He was reportedly worried about expenses of his children’s education. Production at Nagaon Paper Mill started in 1985, and at Cachar Paper Mill in 1988. Each has an annual capacity of producing 1 lakh tonnes of writing and printing paper. At their peak, the mills provided direct and indirect employment to around 2 lakh people. With the production shut, the mills still have 1200odd people on their rolls. Manabendra Chakraborty, chief of the workers’ union at Cachar Paper Mill says,

“The government has not said anything. There has been no notice. Employees have to attend duties. They haven’t said you are released. If you do not want our services, release us after settling dues.” Many attribute the losses of the paper mills to the 2008-09 bamboo flowering crisis in Northeastern states which led to disastrous raw material shortage. The primary raw material for paper mills is bamboo. Together, raw material crisis and government apathy stretching many years have killed two more state-run units, which have often been habitually accused of inefficiency.

She adds, “The SX-74 combines the best of both worlds - the path-breaking technology of the XL class with the tried-and-tested stability of the SM platform. The press is a true hybrid. The SX-74 is 30% more productive than SM equipment, at price points lesser than XL machines.” Perfectly suited for mid-size format and short-run jobs, the SX-74 accommodates a wide array of substrates from thin sheets to boards, ranging in

thickness between 0.03 mm and 0.6 mm. Shorter make-ready and throughput times, and production speeds of 15,000 sheets per hour highlight the SX-74 advantages of agility, speed, and efficiency. Designed to be eco-friendly, the Speedmaster SX-74 is equipped with special rollers in the Alcolor dampening system to dramatically reduce alcohol usage from 10% to 3%, saving172 liters of alcohol for every ten million printed sheets. The SX74 is supported by surface technology to boost service life and extend wash-up intervals. Heidelberg’s unique and proprietary Intellistart component, which is integrated with the SX74 - aids intelligent and dynamic job changes, by facilitating 70% fewer operations for every job change. “Setup times can be scheduled, saving a lot of time between job changes,” quips Rajalakshmy, who turned a debut venture into a roaring success story. From humble beginnings as a DTP center (first of its kind in Kerala) established in 1985, Akshara Offset has exploded into prominence with its quest for quality. Today, the print facility is an ISO 2008 certified organization, and recognized as a star printer in SAARC countries.

“We believe in responsible and sustainable growth. Consistent upgrades are a must to meet the changes and challenges in a print environment that is continuously and globally evolving. Partnership with a trusted brand like Heidelberg is a significant step in our chosen path and priorities. Nowadays customers are highly demanding and quality conscious. The SX-74 inspires us to build on our customercentric culture, while driving operational excellence,” Rajalakshmy concludes with a smile.

70th anniversary offers for Stahlfolder customers - Stahlfolder KH 82 folding machine as a limited anniversary edition at an attractive special price. Heidelberg is celebrating 70 years of expertise in the development, assembly, production, and application of Stahlfolder folding machines from the Ludwigsburg site under the motto “Feel the Experience”. During this time there has been consistent progress in postpress – from the handcrafted folding machine of the past to today’s highly automated and digitally integrated folding machine. “We will continue to use our experience from 70 years of folding machines to expand our portfolio for industrial postpress with regard to digital integration,” explains Michael Neugart, Head of Heidelberg Postpress. “Foremost here will be the future requirements of customers, as demonstrated by the market success of the current Peak Performance Stahlfolder TH/KH 82-P folding machine.” The Stahlfolder TH/KH 82-P machines introduced in 2016 are characterized by their patented solutions for “shingled folding”, and are aimed specifically at industrialized

print shops and specialist bookbinders. The Stahlfolder KH 82 has been available since drupa 2008. It appeals to customers looking for a versatile, flexible, easy to operate, reliable, and compact folding machine. With over 400 installed machines, the KH 82 is the best-selling fully automatic combination folding machine on the market. To celebrate the anniversary, Heidelberg is offering a limited number of Stahlfolder KH 82 machines as an “anniversary edition” on attractive terms with a special price and shorter delivery times. The company is also offering folding training tailored to its customers in order to increase their productivity. Customers can find all the details about the offers as well as read about the history of the Stahlfolder machines and register for folding webinars on the specially designed anniversary website.

Continued development of the postpress portfolio in the direction of industrial postpress “We will continue to develop our folding machines in accordance with our customers’ wishes in the future also, and see big growth potential in postpress. The focus will be on even greater user friendliness, as well as networking and integration into the workflow, as a means to transparency and continuous monitoring,” confirms Michael Neugart. When it comes to printing presses, the Push to Stop concept has already proven itself in numerous installations. The processes are digitalized and integrated, and the

operator only intervenes when necessary. Heidelberg has now transferred this innovative philosophy to postpress. At the Commercial Day , which took place on 23 May at the Wiesloch-Walldorf site, visitors learned how several different signatures or jobs in the same format and with the same fold type can be produced on a shared pallet on a Stahlfolder KH 82-P. The signature change is detected on the sheet and all the measures necessary for the job change are automatically executed. The Stahlfolder KH 82-anniversary edition was also on display at the same event.

70 years of the Stahlfolder Kurt Stahl and Adolf I. Döpfert jointly found the company Stahl & Co. Maschinenfabrik Ludwigsburg in 1949. To date, more than 3,500 machines have been delivered of the new generation of Stahlfolder TH/KH folders launched in 2004. The company presented Stahlfolder TH 82-P and KH 82-P at drupa. With this the machine productivity got increased by up to 100% without any increase in machine speed.

based on a colorimetric perspective, not on density difference. This is crucial because, the colour can look different, even if the density is the same. This type of ink control ensures stable control of colour, including pastel shades, while also alerting on ink soiling or use of wrong ink...other perks being, less paper waste and easy reproducibility.” Designed for consistently high productivity, the Speedmaster SX-74 comes with short make-ready times, and production speeds of up to 15,000 sheets per hour. Special rollers in the Alcolor dampening system of the SX-74 drastically reduce IPA usage from 10% to 3%, rendering the machine eco-friendly and resource-efficient. The SX-74 accommodates flexible processing of different production run lengths. The Prinect Pressroom Manager facilitates controlling press operations from the office, including automatic and timely delivery of print jobs to production. “With our elite clientele, we take no chances with innovation, quality or production. Rahul Print O Pack achieves record productivity on their Heidelberg CS92 Second in Asia to achieve 64 million impressions in just about 14 months of installation. Rahul Print O Pack, was founded by Mr.Ajay Soni in 1998 as a free lancer for commercial printing works like brochures pamphlets, catalogues and magazines. Today, they have a 24000 square feet printing plant in Okhla Industrial Area (Delhi) with a CS92 4-colour sheetfed offset Heidelberg, a Heidelberg Suprasetter A106 CtP, 2 folders from the Stahl stable, a couple of nipping machines, lamination machines, die punching machines, a folder gluer for duplex cartons along with a perfect binder from Welbound. According to Mr.Soni, he has his hands full with work and has loyal customers who support him in his efforts all these years. He is a man of principles and believes that if you are good, you will get good too. “Staff is the backbone of any business and we look after them like our own family and they have been extremely loyal too,” he says. “Small orders are increasing as in number of copies and digital seems to be an explorable option,” Ajay feels. He considers 1100 copies of a book from a publisher to be short runs, which presently he run on his Heidelberg CS92 itself but is looking at possibilities to explore the digital area of Inkjet printing. “It has been about 30 years since I started as a free lancer in 1998. In 2005, I put in a packaging unit with a laminator and die cutter and later in 2007 - 2008 we put the finishing and binding with Stahl folder and section sewing along with a three knife trimmer and Polar cutting machine,” he reminiscences. “Till 2018 the company had been outsourcing its printing needs and as we grow, exploring into digital options is inevitable. Digital is a possibility in times to come but we are kind of sure that it would be inkjet technology that we shall explore as that seems to be the future,” puts in Rahul, Son of Mr.Soni and under whose name, he has named his press. “Despite being an outsourcing unit for so long, we are valued by our customers for our strict time schedules and delivery on-time every time. This we consider as our biggest USP along with fulfilling all that we promise truthfully,” declares Ajay. He finds it especially rewarding when clients like Pearson Education consider Rahul Print O Pack as their preferred partner.

He has equal praise for Heidelberg, when he speaks about the company and their technology, “There has not been a single day after installation that the Heidelberg machine has stopped even for a day and we may consider ourselves to be one of the most satisfied customers in this regard.” Rahul Print O Pack has been witness to 64 million impressions on the machine in the last about 14 months since the installation, which, according to Mr.Deepak Walia – RSM, Heidelberg India, is one of the best productivity figures attained by a printer in India. “I can say on record that they are second in the whole of Asia to have attained such kind of productivity,” declares Mr. Peter Rego, General Manager of Heidelberg, India.

Incidentally, the day we visited the press for the interview, the company also started with the production of their Suprasetter CtP, again a marvellous technology from Heidelberg. Mr.Soni was full of praise for Heidelberg expressing his extreme satisfaction about the training provided by Heidelberg, their after sales service, scheduled maintenance, service staff interaction and much more. “Kudos to team Heidelberg!” announces Ajay. “Our relationship with Rahul Print O Pack is more of a family relationship than anything else – which is also true with all our customers – and we support them to the best of our capabilities,” states Mr.Walia.

In Nordhorn, Germany a PECOM control console has been virtualized for the first time Grafschafter Nachrichten, Nordhorn Invests in Modern Controls for GEOMAN Press.

In the near future, print jobs at the Grafschafter Nachrichten will be controlled via the intuitive ControlCenter from manroland Goss web systems (MGWS). The biggest benefits attained are the userfriendly operator interface combined with additional gains of production relevant information. The ControlCenter interface has been implemented on the existing control consoles, meaning that the existing console, including the embedded keyboards, remain in place. A central touch-screen based ControlPad complements the control system. It virtualizes and controls all integrated components and displays their current status, which means all product-relevant information is centrally visible, in real-time. Correction of settings is carried out directly on the touch screen. Furthermore, it is now possible for the MGWS TeleSupport Center (TSC), to perform remote diagnostics.

IDCµ, one of the fastest ink and dampening solution control systems, is also in operation in Nordhorn. Ink control can be left completely up to the IDCµ module.

In addition, IDCµ, one of the fastest ink and dampening solution control systems, is also in operation in Nordhorn. Ink control can be left completely up to the IDCµ module. Therefore, even a small team of press operators can produce jobs on the press at new levels of accuracy and efficiency. The benefits of this comprehensive retrofit are clear: converting the control system enables significantly improved system performance with reduced downtime. IDCµ also contributes to a reduction in labour and material costs. Fact is: the retrofit secures press availability for many years to come, and simultaneously reduces operating costs significantly. Maik Hofsink, Head of Operations at the Grafschafter Nachrichten, is delighted with the supplied control system and the new, highly intuitive control console operation of his Newspaper printing press.

As experienced label printer Arvanitis knows very well that reliability in high print quality and a smooth production process are indispensable to be successful on the market in the long term. “With the new Gallus ECS 340 we achieve excellent print results consistently, equivalent to offset printing, and we can rely on this,” states Panos Arvanitis from M. Arvanitis. “Even more, due to the advantages of the new press and our experience in flexo, we are able to achieve minimum set up times and thus, can enhance our productivity.”

Investing in digital or conventional? Digital printing is a major aspect for printing houses thinking about an investment in a new production line. Arvanitis clearly decided to invest once again in conventional printing technology. “We have been investing in UV flexo technology for more than twenty years now. Having to choose between UV flexo and digital printing, we trusted in UV flexo once again,” explains Panos Arvanitis “For sure, these days the interest in digital printing is increasing, but we feel, that we know our needs better! The long experience and persistence has qualified our company with expertise in a range of pressure-sensitive applications.” The Gallus ECS 340 is a quiet, user-friendly and exceptionally cost-effective printing press for commodity labels with a very short web path and a running speed up to 165 m/min (541 ft/min). High flexibility regarding substrates and minimal setup times due to full servo-drive integration are just two reasons that the Gallus ECS 340 is the best-selling machine system in its class with short web path. Strong interest from customers in Heidelberg packaging solutions At the recent Packaging Days Heidelberg focuses on increased productivity and profitability as well as differentiation.

The topic of multicolour, and therefore printing spot colours with three colours in addition to the basic colours in one pass, was demonstrated ...the fact that no colour changes are required between the individual jobs greatly reduces washing and makeready times, which means much higher productivity.

In the middle of May, Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) hosted its Packaging Days at the Wiesloch-Walldorf site with the theme “Together on Track to Success”. Over 350 participants from all over the world visited the Print Media Center Packaging on two days, where they demonstrated strong interested in Heidelberg’s integrated solutions and got comprehensive answers to the growing needs in the industry. Run lengths are declining, the number of individual jobs is increasing, raw materials are going up in price, and margins continue to be under pressure. Heidelberg offers its customers a wide product portfolio for this, with standardized processes and largely automated workflows. “We are continuously enhancing the Smart Print Shop, and offer our customers assistance with the digital transformation,” explained Stephan Plenz, Member of the Management Board responsible for Digital Technology, during his welcome address. “On this journey, we want to give our customers lots of different ideas of how they can make their business model even more profitable.” For example, the “Smart Packaging Production” agenda item showed how productivity and profitability can be significantly increased in an integrated overall

solution. Networked with the Prinect Production Manager, the Speedmaster XL 106 six-colour press with coating unit and logistics, the new Powermatrix 106 CSB die cutter, and the Diana X 115 folder gluer ran at full speed. The Powermatrix 106 CSB is the new high-performance die cutter from MK Masterwork. It produces 8,000 sheets per hour and has many features expected by packaging printers, such as an elevated pile handling system and the optical MasterSet sheet register system as standard equipment. Its performance capability in a 24/7 environment will make the new Powermatrix 106 CSB an economical option for industrial packaging printers looking for an efficient die cutter. The topic of multicolour, and therefore printing spot colours with three colours in addition to the basic colours in one pass, was demonstrated both on the Speedmaster XL 75 Anicolor and on the large-format Speedmaster XL 162. The fact that no colour changes are required between the individual jobs greatly reduces washing and makeready times, which means much higher productivity. The Primefire 106 industrial inkjet digital printing press demonstrated the personalization possibilities

in “Packaging as you Like”. This allowed customers to discover how the latest digital processes can be seamlessly integrated with traditional offset methods – with the same substrates and the familiar finishing processes on existing postpress systems. “One Pass, Infinite Possibilities” was popular with those interested in greater profitability through differentiation. The Speedmaster XL 106 eight-colour press with double coating unit and the FoilStar cold foil module produced the most fascinating finishing effects, guaranteed to attract attention on any market shelf. This is how brand owners realize their eye-catching effects at the point of sale.

Productive all-rounders in the Print Media Center Commercial Following the market launch at a customer event in the MK Masterwork factory in Nove Mesto, Slovakia, the new Diana Go folder gluer was installed in hall 57 in WieslochWalldorf. Together with the Speedmaster CX 102 6+L and the Easymatrix 106 CS die cutter, the Diana Go represented the final process step in an integrated and cost-effective packaging line. The Diana Go, which incorporates many functions from the tried-and-tested Diana family, offers commercial and packaging printers a powerful folder gluer with a very compact footprint at an attractive price.

The Diana Go provides commercial and packaging printers with a high-performance folder gluer with a very compact footprint at an attractive price.

Subscription digital business model taps the pulse of the industry The new subscription digital business model was also explained in detail. The customer no longer purchases a press, but instead pays for an agreed monthly print volume. The service package for the customer consists of the machine, consumables, service, and workflow. This means planning certainty

when it comes to costs, which frees up the printer to concentrate fully on their own customers and how they operate in the market. Heidelberg and the subscription customer have the same interests here, namely increasing productivity through a smooth, streamlined production process at a competitive level for greater profitability for the printer.

The demonstrations on the Primefire 106 industrial inkjet digital press were well attended.

Macro Trends and Flexible Machine Systems Numerous macro trends in label and packaging printing require flexible machine systems. Decisive for the efficiency of modern machine concepts in label and narrow web packaging printing are flexibility in configuration options, as well as the ability to change printing processes and jobs quickly. This is underscored by a look at the trend landscape within label and packaging printing. How does the Gallus Labelmaster assert itself as the most recent product development of the traditional Swiss manufacturer in a market that is increasingly demanding more flexibility? An occasion to take a closer look at the market trends and compare them with the features of the machine concept.

With its concept for fully flexible process and job changes at a primary process level, Gallus is fully in line with the requirements of today’s macro trends in label and packaging printing.

Many of the recently identified macro trends in label and packaging printing have an impact on label and packaging product design – and thus on the demands that machines such as the Gallus Labelmaster must meet today. The following overview of current developments and trends gives a more detailed picture of these requirements.

Trends that increase job changes and reduce print runs At the forefront of Macro Trends are changes in consumer behaviour as well as trends that can be attributed to fashion & design or retail development. For label and packaging printing, this is reflected in the increase in job changes and decreasing print runs.

In the Gallus Labelmaster Advanced, all flexographic printing units can be exchanged by either screen printing, hot foil or die-cutting units. Additionally it is also possible to replace them with units from OEM manufacturers. (Source: Picture by courtesy of Gallus Ferd. Rüesch AG)

Today, packaging designers respond more specifically to the needs of consumer groups. They address baby boomers with a different design than younger consumer groups, increasing the number of packaging designs. The trend towards age-appropriate consumer design also increases the variety as labels or packaging are designed more clearly for the older audience, or larger typefaces are used. The “I want it now” trend is dominated by a group of buyers who are increasingly ordering on the Internet, some of whom are using their own labels and packaging for shipping.

Key Notes : > A closer look at the market trends and comparing them with the features of the machine concept. > Recently identified macro trends in label and packaging printing have an impact on label and packaging product design. > Job changes, print runs, machine configuration, least waste, ease of use and changeability of Gallus Labelmaster.

The fact that consumers are becoming increasingly aware and want to know what is contained in a package leads to more information and thus more text on a label or packaging. This is reinforced by the variety of languages and the mandatory information required for products requiring explanation, such as pharmaceuticals. These developments are creating a positive trend for booklet labels, but also to shorter print runs, as the information can quickly change.

The Internet of Things (IOT) is especially important for the macro trend technology. • Labels and packaging are increasingly being equipped with QR codes or NFC tags (near field communication tags). Via the Internet, buyers can view more information or interactive options on their smartphones. This allows the brand owner to differentiate itself from its competition on the store shelf and create a direct link to the buyer. This also includes an enhanced product experience through augmented reality. • At the same time, we live in a world of networking where changes in the design of labels and packaging are much faster. This results in a wide range of variants and smaller lot sizes, combined with an increasing number of order changes.

Trends that affect the machine configuration and the change of the printing units The current trend in consumer behaviour towards simplicity in design does not necessarily mean that this also represents less effort in the requirements of the printing technology. • On the contrary: To realize a rather simple design attractively, often means more effort in printing. High opacity due to screen-printed white, the use of matt and gloss coatings or haptic effects due to thick-layered screen printing are just such examples. And not to forget finishing with hot foil and cold foil: All screen printing units and hot foil units for such jobs must be able to be placed where the respective job demands it with little effort. • Contrary to the simple design, higher quality consumer goods continue the trend of highlighting a brand with an exclusive design, resulting in at least the same - if not even higher - process variability requirements.

Flexible configuration options What technical characteristics do modern machine systems need today in order to meet these market requirements? The Gallus Labelmaster belongs to a machine class that offers a balanced degree of automation with high profitability for the operator. With its modular structure, it offers a multitude of configuration options and is therefore very much in line with market requirements: The Gallus Labelmaster Advanced is designed so that all process changes in the printing section occur at a level known as the primary process level. As a result, all flexographic printing units can be replaced by screen printing units, hot foil units as well as punching units. It is also possible to replace them with units from OEM manufacturers. A process change, i.e. changing one printing unit to another, requires less than 15 minutes for this equipment variant to “ready-to-print”. This makes the machine system flexibly configurable for every job requirement. The Gallus Labelmaster Advanced does not have to be switched off during the process change, the process change takes place while the machine is running, which brings a time and therefore monetary benefit. Since all units are located on the same leading axis, this also offers control-related advantages over machine systems in which the screen printing unit is located on a rail above the flexographic printing units or added as dropin station.

“Following macro trends, process changes will continue to increase and short process changes will

be even more important for the efficiency of a machine system in the future.” Although these machines also offer a certain degree of flexibility in principle, there are significant losses in changeover times, pressure stability and thus ultimately in the productivity of the machine solution. Process changes require considerably longer for such solutions, with rail systems a total of approx. 30 min (+ 100%), with drop-in variants even up to 45 min (+ 200%). If one assumes in practice approximately 2 process changes per shift, then this different time requirement for the process changes is expressed in annual savings of 38.400 EUR / year in 2-shift operation compared to a rail system, or 76.800 EUR / year compared to a drop In variant. Following macro trends, process changes will continue to increase and the shortest possible process changes will be even more important for the efficiency of a machine system in the future.

The savings potential for process changes with the Gallus Labelmaster Advanced compared to machines with rail systems or drop-in units is considerable. Changeability of the Gallus Labelmaster The basic version of the Gallus Labelmaster also offers the option of two interchangeable processes within the printing units, for example a screen printing unit and a hot foil stamping instead of two flexo units. Again,

marks that always occur over time with geardriven printing cylinders. The lightweight printing cylinders of the Gallus Labelmaster can be changed in no time at all. A machine with eight printing units requires less than 8 minutes to change, even less when two people are performing the change at the same time. For this purpose, a special clamping system has been developed to accommodate the cylinders. Also of advantage is the practical and ergonomic arrangement of the operating buttons, which, from experience, are installed where the operator expects them.

the change in any position of the machine is possible. Machines that were configured as a pure flexographic printing line at the time of purchase can be retrofitted with the option of changing two units, for example with a punch or screen printing unit. In this way, a customer can also use the machine for other applications / products and has investment security for a changing product portfolio. If one draws a cost comparison for process changes with machine systems of other types, this results in an annual saving of 12,800 EUR / year compared to a rail system, or 51,200 EUR / year compared to a drop-in variant.

Trends to ensure the least possible waste of paper are gaining in importance Today’s machine systems have yet to meet other trends. One of these trends is the sustainability of packaging, which will attract much more attention in the future. • As packaging waste becomes increasingly critical, both label and packaging printers will have to look more thoroughly at the issue of how to minimize the amount of waste in setting up orders – and this with an overall increase in the number of order changes. • In addition, alternatives to plastic materials are gaining in importance, resulting in an increase in the range of substrates. One recent example is grass paper. When purchasing a machine, the ability to print on a wide range of materials - from monofilm to

34

May 2019

tube laminates - is a factor that should be considered.

Demand for a machine concept with low volume of paper wastage Following these trends, the question arises as to how a machine concept must be designed that meets the requirements of ecology and sustainability. Low paper wastage is a weighty criterion not only for reasons of sustainability, but also for potential savings. In this case for the Gallus Labelmaster, the web travel from printing unit to printing unit is 1.4 m. This is made possible by the arrangement of all essential processes on the primary level, whereby no change to another level is necessary. The use of a screen printing unit on a rail, for example, causes an additional path of 4 to 6 meters. The arrangement of the printing units on the primary level, however, saves material, time and costs during setup and becomes even more important with increasing job and material changes.

User-friendly features: “Easy-to-Use” For fast process and job changes, the user-friendly features of a printing press are crucial. This includes the entirety of the “easy-to-use” properties. For example, that during the process change on the primary process level no chain hoist is needed. Or stable printing units in which printing cylinders and anilox rollers are equipped with bearer rings. They ensure consistent print quality by eliminating the formation of gear

For maintenance, the printing units can be easily removed so that no machine failure occurs during such operations. When integrating screen printing units, it proves to be an advantage that they are designed and manufactured by Gallus itself and that a separate model is used for each machine type, which is integrated in the control system. Also noteworthy is the design of the chambered doctor blade, with robust ink chambers that require a very small amount of ink from 220 to 1,500 ml. The rounded shape of the ink channel in the chamber blade results in improved circulation of the ink with less tendency to trapped air and allows for easier cleaning. All of these criteria help to make a machine easy to operate for the operator and easy to change over.

Conclusion With its concept for fully flexible process and job changes at a primary process level, Gallus is fully in line with the requirements of today’s macro trends in label and packaging printing. In particular, rapid job and process changes are becoming significantly more important in order to remain competitive and produce efficiently. At the same time, a flexible machine concept means investment security for the user, as it can be quickly adapted to changing market conditions. Thus, it is worthwhile for printers to calculate the cost of day-to-day production on a label printing machine – over the entire life cycle of the respective machine solution. In the course of increasing industrialization in label and packaging printing, the productivity of the machine solution is becoming the main driving force for sustainable business success.

It’s been a year of Esko solutions at RS Graphics Invests in Esko’s three prepress software modules and more recently Kongsberg X Starter digital samplemaker. Chennai-based RS Graphics is a 5-decade-old company providing high-quality printing and packaging for local and overseas customers. The Managing Director of the specialized manufacturer of cartons, labels and tags, Mr. VB Shridharan has in the past year invested in three of Esko’s prepress software modules and more recently, in the Kongsberg X Starter digital samplemaker. RS Graphics first installed Esko ArtiosCAD 3D, Deskpack Advanced and Plato. ArtiosCAD 3D is a very powerful and widely used packaging structural design software for corrugated boxes, folding cartons, POPs and FSDU design. With its extensive library of templates and standards the software helps in the structural design of any packaging with high precision.

“Traditionally, one first needed to make a die to make a box and that takes a lot of time and apart from the cost there is a lack of flexibility in case there are changes. With the Esko Kongsberg, the carton sample is ready within half an hour.” – VB Shridharan

Key Notes : > RS Graphics saves time and resources with Esko Ecosystem investments. > The recently installed Kongsberg’s quick samples are essential for exports. > Earlier installed ArtiosCAD 3D, Despack Advanced and Plato.

36

May 2019

Esko Deskpack Advanced is a collection of highly use-friendly packaging prepress plug-ins for Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop. It helps in making graphics printable with professional tools and finesse. From importing structural design files, over trapping production files, all the way up to creating repetitions of print-ready production files. Esko Plato is a powerful tool for the creation of print-ready layouts with step and repeat and nesting for cartons and labels. It is the production gateway between the prepress department and the pressroom. The Kongsberg X Starter comes in standard configurations for sample making, signage and display production. It offers a broad selection of tools and provides quality results on a wide range of cutting, creasing and plotting tasks. Driven by Esko digital design software, it cuts and creases at a maximum speed of 50 meters per minute for quick samples of cartons, labels or finished POPs and signage on a variety of materials such as corrugated, folding carton, solid board, foam, spot coating blankets, wood and various types of plastics. Kongsberg is the most widely used cutting table in the packaging Industry. According to Mr. Sridharan, there were many options available but he decided to go for a comprehensive solution from Esko for both the prepress software and

samplemaking. He believes in always investing in the best tools and says, “There are other companies as well but nothing compares to the quality provided by Esko. I found the Esko software and the Kongsberg X to be most suitable for our requirements as these assist in faster turnaround of jobs and are extremely user-friendly.”

Carton samples ready in half an hour Sridharan further adds, “We invested in the Esko Kongsberg because we do a lot of exports. Since we are in exports, we invariably need the samples faster, say within two days’ time or so. Traditionally, one first needed to make a die to make a box and that takes a lot of time and apart from the cost there is a lack of flexibility in case there are changes. With the Esko Kongsberg, the carton sample is ready within half an hour. So it has helped us reduce our production time and saved us a lot of resources that go into the making of a die. The level of perfection achieved with the machine is 100% and we are extremely happy with our investment.”

During this highly informative tour we could see our MITians, our Alumni - 13 of them are with Esko,” says Dr. Amrutharaj. “Our joy and happiness had no boundary when we heard words of praise from the management about our Alumni. We felt proud and elated. It took us more than an hour to see how every department complement each other and works. It was evident to us that, this Company is managed by a group of dynamic professionals, working proactively in a peaceful environment. They provide all

the necessary resources to ensure excellent service is given to their clients. A sumptuous lunch was served at Esko’s cafeteria located on the top floor. That is also the meeting place for team Esko, whenever get-together happens. The team spent valuable hours with team Esko and the institute’s ex-students. They took with them pleasant memories of technology in action and their students having turned into young professionals. All were proud of MIT and were full of appreciation for Esko. Esko is a subsidiary of Danaher Corporation, headquartered in Ghent, Belgium. The then, prepress titans Barco Graphics and Purup-Eskofot A/S merged to form Esko Graphics in 2001. Later in 2006 the company was renamed as Esko. In the recent past,

Esko acquired CAPE Systems, creator of palletization software in 2013. In 2015, Media Beacon a Digital Asset Management vendor and Blue Software LLC who are pioneer in label and artwork management software in 2018. Esko has over 1800 employees worldwide. We were amazed to know, how the company had evolved greatly over the years and has set a benchmark in pre-press solutions.

Label leadership: 4 trends that show why labels are pioneering progress in packaging By Federico D’Annunzio, Product Owner, Hybrid & Label Printing, BOBST. The label printing market continues to grow: the global market was valued at $36.98 billion in 2017 and is forecast to reach $45.22 billion by 2022. This is driven in part by changing market dynamics and ever-evolving demands from label customers, with a growing number of SKUs, a dramatic reduction in average job lengths and life-cycles for massproduced products and a significant increase of the regulatory content that is required on products. But it is also due – in part at least – to the fact that players in the label printing industry have been willing to embrace change and pioneer new printing and converting methods. The result in recent years has been an increasing number of label types and variety of labels in the industry. So, is that set to continue? And should we look to the label industry as a weather vane for the packaging industry overall? Here we look at four key trends in the labelling industry and the potential impact these may have.

BOBST – one of the world’s leading suppliers of equipment and services to packaging and label manufacturers – prides itself on keeping ahead of the latest trends in labelling and other packaging sectors.

Key Notes : > The label printing market is forecast to reach $45.22 billion by 2022. > Increasing number of label types and variety of labels in the industry in recent years. > Label sector has been an early adopter with the rest of the packaging market following.

1. The integration of digital and analogue The label sector has clearly been an early adopter of digital printing. Digitally-printed labels have boomed

in recent years, driven by market demands for shorter runs, more customized packaging, greater sustainability and the need to help products stand out even more. The rest of the packaging market is following. Indeed, we have recently seen a tipping point in the industry with more new narrow web digital press installations than flexo presses. Beyond labels, analysts expect a strong growth in digital for corrugated, folding carton and flexibles applications. The capabilities of digital printers and presses are increasing, but such breakthrough innovations can

pressideas/ plc

take more time than expected to become mainstream. Digital represents an entirely new way of processing jobs, from the file to the end product, and step-by-step, it will enable companies to reach new frontiers in quality, productivity and overall workflow. In addition, the online “digital product” is growing in importance; sophisticated software is enabling more of the design, approval and marketing process to be completed using the digital product. This will change the working dynamic between Converters / Printers and Brand Owners as they will share a more digitized cooperation throughout the workflow.

2.The rise of customization and premium labels Analog printing is well suited for mid-to-long applications and will continue to contribute to a large percentage of global production. Meanwhile, demand is evolving rapidly towards more customization and promotion, which means smaller runs, greater cost constraints and eventually the transformation of the entire digital workflow. Being able to produce results with maximum flexibility and to an optimum economical value will give digital printing a huge foothold in all sectors. Brands, small and large, are promoting so-called “targeted campaigns”, where the labels alone can enhance the apparent quality of a product. Different print effects – such as hot foil stamping, cold foil stamping and gravure printing – are used to embellish the labels to give them a more ‘premium’ appearance, as are tactile or haptic effects using processes like spot varnishing. Some of these enhancements can even be done digitally.

The increasing demand for colour consistency is leading the drive towards

been pleasantly surprised by the outcomes that will enable them to deliver on this

the Extended Color Gamut (ECG). ECG printing uses three additional ink colors orange, green and violet (OGV) – on top of the conventional colors of cyan, magenta, yellow, and black (CMYK), making for a total of seven in total (CMYKOGV). Printing with a traditional CMYK blend only matches approximately 60% of the Pantone – but when printing with a CMYKOGV blend, it is possible to match 90%+ of the Pantone. Again, in this domain, innovation will be at the forefront to improve ink while increasing the Pantone reach.

request. They also recognize the immediate advantages in flexibility and time-tomarket when using the ECG technology in combination with digital automation in flexo presses.

What the industry needs to see is repeatability and consistency. Now, the digitization of colour matching has made 100% colour conformity with the job master request a reality. Brand Owners want to achieve colour conformity on a global scale, irrespective of where their printing suppliers are located in the world. Converters have

4.Increasing automation and Internet of Things (IoT) The growing demands on label printers for shorter print runs, faster turnaround, and greater flexibility and customization is driving the industry towards higher levels of automation across digital and analogue printing methods. Ultimately, this will likely lead towards integrated workflows optimizing time to market and increasingly satisfying consumer demands. Already, systems can link to Cloud applications and monitor machines and productivity.

We will likely see a better fit in the industry between conventional flexo, Extended Color Gamut (ECG) and digital printing technologies, all used optimally to meet the increasing demand for labels.

3.Demand for better colour control – from file to finished product Understandably, Brand Owners have a great demand for colour consistency. They know that their customers subconsciously look to the packaging and the label for cues about quality, so any discrepancy issues with brand colours can lead to a negative perception.

Higher levels of automation of course have an impact on the type of personnel needed. Human errors are the biggest reason for product recalls; step-by-step, new solutions will significantly reduce this risk. A more important role will be taken by the pre-press specialist and the supply chain people, ensuring there are no bottlenecks, but rather a smooth automated flow.

Why BOBST is labelled as the leading converting and printing equipment supplier in the industry BOBST – one of the world’s leading suppliers of equipment and services to packaging and label manufacturers – prides itself on keeping ahead of the latest trends in labelling and other packaging sectors. It is a result of listening to customers and understanding the requirements of Brand Owners and being able to produce global and most competitive solutions. For example, industrializing the use of a comprehensive range of printing technology, from high graphic flexo, to Extended Color Gamut (ECG) and to digital printing, BOBST has been at the forefront of increasing the product portfolio and applications domains. Mimaki launches JFX200-2513 EX at FESPA 2019 World’s first flatbed inkjet printer to offer ‘onetouch’ 2.5D texture capabilities. Mimaki Europe, manufacturer of inkjet printers and cutting systems, launched its new JFX200-2513 EX large flatbed UV inkjet printer at FESPA Global Print Expo 2019 (Munich, Germany – 14-17 May 2019). Introducing a new print mode and an extra printhead, the JFX200-2513 EX boasts substantial productivity increases on previous JFX models – 280% faster in new draft mode when printing in four colours plus white, and 100% faster for all other print modes. This entry-level printer also uses Mimaki’s 2.5D Texture Maker to enable smooth embossed print at the touch of a button. For the first time, this allows print service providers to offer large format digital print with enticingto-touch dimensional textured effects without lengthy file preparation. Opening new and valuable application opportunities for customers, the new Mimaki layering technology has been designed for supreme simplicity and ease of use. Eradicating the previous time-consuming and skilled process of creating multiple Photoshop files featuring stacked stepped layers for smooth expression, Mimaki’s genuine RIP software ‘RaterLink6Plus’ completes the process in seconds. It achieves that by adding a greyscale image of the original coloured file in the RIP. Taking large format print applications to a different dimension, Mimaki print houses can now offer exceptional printed textures such as simulated woodgrain, oil painting on canvas, as well as raised, high-visibility lettering for more traditional signage applications. Danna Drion, Senior Marketing Manager EMEA, Mimaki Europe, comments: “In a market where competition is fierce and margins have been squeezed, we’re excited to launch the new Mimaki JFX200-2513 EX. In terms of offering new profitable services, our new product represents an important business differentiator for customers. If that wasn’t enough, the productivity gains that the JFX200-2513 EX represents, makes it a very compelling proposition. Irrespective, no matter the size of your business, it’s

important that when you enter a new market, you do so with a technology and partner you can trust. Offering Japanese product quality and a culture built around customer service excellence, this is certainly assured with Mimaki.” The new Mimaki JFX200-2513 EX is the successor of the JFX200-2513 large flatbed UV inkjet printer. The new Mimaki JFX2002513 EX pushes innovation further with its increased productivity and value-added print proposition. Ideal for demanding production workflows, the JFX200-2513 EX prints on substrates up to 2,500mm x 1,300mm (98.4″ x 51.2″), in a wide variety of materials including white board, transparent/coloured board, wood, cardboard and metal – commonly used for applications including sign panels, furniture displays, building materials and much more. Usability has been improved and another interface has been added to connect external safety devices such as a safety curtain.

enables them to introduce new products very quickly, without having the expense and time it takes to receive outsourced jigs produced using traditional methods. 3D signage can also be produced and, with a 3D printer in-house, new markets can be explored to employ the printer to its full capacity.

At FESPA, Mimaki expounded the benefits of its MUH-100-Si UV-curable metallic ink, the world’s first metallic ink available for flatbed direct-to-object printing.

Mimaki also used FESPA 2019 to demonstrate its collaboration with some of the market’s most inspirational and world-leading designers, creatives and photographers. Jamal Khashoggi gets The Golden Pen of Freedom The award has been given posthumously to the brave Saudi Journalist, a torchbearer of ‘freedom of expression’ that cost him his life. The Golden Pen of Freedom, the annual press freedom award of the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WAN-IFRA), has been awarded posthumously to Saudi Arabian journalist, Jamal Khashoggi. The award, made in Glasgow, Scotland during the 71st World News Media Congress, 26th World Editors Forum and 3rd Women in News Summit, recognised Mr Khashoggi’s long-standing commitment – despite great personal sacrifice and ultimately fatal consequences – to speaking truth to power by exercising his right to freedom of expression through unflinching, quality journalism.

“’When I speak of the fear, intimidation, arrests and public shaming of intellectuals and religious leaders who dare to speak their minds, and then I tell you I’m from Saudi Arabia, are you surprised?’” said Dave Callaway, World Editors Forum president, quoting Mr Khashoggi’s first article for The Washington Post after he went into selfimposed exile in the United States in 2017. “Despite his enormous love for his homeland, he could not bring himself to ignore where it was going,” continued Mr Callaway. “He continued to speak out, and it cost him his life.” On 2nd October, 2018 Mr Khashoggi entered the Saudi Arabian consulate in Istanbul, Turkey to collect documents related to his upcoming marriage to his Turkish fiancée, Hatice Cengiz. But he never came out. After numerous denials and theories of his disappearance, on 20th October, state television reported that he had in fact been murdered in an operation ordered by a Saudi intelligence officer. More than a month later, Saudi Arabia’s attorney general admitted that he had been given a lethal injection inside the consulate and that his death had been premeditated.

“Since last October, many of us who knew Jamal have been in a daze. Not able to comprehend what was done to him, why the Saudi government deemed his words so dangerous he had to be brutally murdered. His body disappeared. Just to silence him,” said Saudi journalist and filmmaker, Safa Al Ahmad, who accepted the award in the name of Jamal Khashoggi. “The Saudi government hoped that Jamal’s murder would scare the rest of us. Would silence us. Instead, those who were silent started to speak out. Realizing that their words are powerful, even threatening to this government.” The Golden Pen of Freedom is WAN-IFRA’s annual award recognising individuals or organisations that have made an outstanding contribution to the defence and promotion of press freedom. One of the objectives of the Golden Pen is to turn the spotlight of public attention on repressive governments and the journalists who fight them. The first Golden Pen of Freedom was awarded in 1961. This year’s award to Jamal Khashoggi is only the third occasion that the Pen has been given posthumously; Claude Bellanger (1979) and Naji al-Ali (1988) were also awarded after their deaths.
