FROM THE EDITORS’ DESK Dear Readers, The Ministry of Commerce and Industries along with the Ministry of MSME and the Ministry of Urban Development, Government of India, held the 9th International Exhibition of Printing and Allied Machinery Industries (PAMEX 2013) – the event organized by All India Federation of Master Printers (AIFMP) with TAFCON as Associate Organiser. The event took place recently from 14 to 17 November at India Expo Centre & Mart, Greater Noida Expressway, NCR, Delhi. The exhibition saw nearly 200 exhibitors across 22 countries showcase their products, and a footfall of 20,326. So, was the exhibition a grand show or not? Well, we received a mixed response from the exhibitors and visitors alike. While some called it a good show, there were others who didn’t meet their expectations. One view was more or less common that the venue has a location that doesn’t qualify to be the easiest of accesses. A few were of the opinion that even Tier II cities can be considered for future venue as our metro audience are somewhat overfed with the number of exhibitions taking place in a year. We have an exclusive coverage on PAMEX 2013 with interviews with key people of some of the major names of the industry. In ‘Face-to-Face at PAMEX 2013’ you may find: how Suba Solutions adds value to printed products with refractory and embossing machines; AGS’s new generation Akoe Flatbed Sample Cutting Machine; KMI’s focus on the Photo segment; Special country dedicated products by Esko; Malhotra Graphics completing packaging industry package with Packz; Media Scope by Pratham Technologies; Presentation of its entire range by Kodak; Autoprint’s single colour Non-Woven Bags Printing Machine; SLKCG presenting solutions by Fuchu Shiko; The right and best input materials and special offers by Heidelberg; Ricoh’s innovative solutions; and APL Machinery’s focus on UV. When S K Offset installed a brand new Heidelberg Speedmaster SM 74, the owner Pradeep didn’t want to put the new machine into their established book printing sphere. Instead, he wanted it to balance the cash credit equation of the business. He decided for a smaller format Heidelberg as this format couldn’t be put into book printing and kept his SM 74 exclusively for production of packaging. The cover story brings to you the success journey of this Meerut based printer who probably started off as the youngest printer at a raw age of just 11 years. Another exclusive story this time is on Divine Printers which publishes a devotional magazine ‘Vachanostsavam’ as well as The Bible for distribution among the devotees. The Chalakudy, Kerala based printer has recently boosted its production and quality capability with a couple of Heidelberg equipments. PRESSIdeas talked with Father Joseph, GM of Divine Printers about their printing organisation and recent installations. One of the key installations recently is by Edelmann India - choosing Esko’s complete prepress software for folding carton, including ArtiosCAD, DeskPack, Plato, Imaging Engine, Automation Engine as well as Kongsberg XE10 sample table to boost quality, consistency and enhance productivity. Know about the activities that took place at the Decoding Colors 2013 Conference on 15th November 2013 at Hotel The Royal Plaza, New Delhi; Frankfurt Book Fair; 3D Printing; Kodak plates saving 265 million litres of water in one year; and a lot more of your interest in this November issue of PRESSIdeas.

S K Offset keeps the cash flowing with Heidelberg SM 74 When Meerut based S K Offset installed a brand new Heidelberg Speedmaster SM 74, Pradeep didn’t want to put the new machine into their established book printing sphere. Instead, he wanted it to balance the cash credit equation of the business. S K Offset of Meerut had a modest beginning in the year 1977 with a treadle machine, when Mr. Pradeep was encouraged and assisted by his brother-in-law, who was already running an Offset printing business. Pradeep was just 11 years old then and he had just Rs.2000 to invest. He took a loan for the rest of the amount to buy the first Treadle which cost him Rs.9000. He started printing boxes on his treadle. The business started growing and he gradually kept adding more treadles to his setup.
Exploring the Offset prospects
There was a huge demand for book printing. S K Offset could still employ a couple of presses for book printing which they didn’t want at that moment. Pradeep decided for a smaller format Heidelberg as this format couldn’t be put into book printing. Therefore, they kept their SM 74 exclusively for production of packaging.
Key Notes : > Starting off at an early age of 11 years and with an investment of just Rs.2000. > From treadle to offset to a leading book printer of Meerut. > Keeping the balance of packaging and book printing and installing one the earliest Heidelberg SM 74 and Suprasetter machines in the region.

He was already working on four treadles for 24hours in 1980 when he stepped into Offset with his first PO 25 Offset machine. The little experience of outsourcing Offset jobs for some time helped him explore the market prospects of Offset printing and he took his first leap. He worked on the PO 25 for 3-4 years and added equipment. Another 3-4 years and he bought two more machines in quick succession. All this while he used to get their films and plates prepared from Delhi. “We would get our scanning and planning from Delhi,” says Pradeep. “We used to take 20-25 designs at a time with us to Delhi. We had to inform the people there about our visit in advance and they too would be quite supportive to stop every other job and take ours on priority. We would return the same night with our plates,” relates
Pradeep. Interestingly, they used to earn Rs.2-3 lakhs extra from these two special jobs of scanning and planning.
Meeting customer demands in-house Now the need for meeting demand of bigger jobs in-house was on the top of the list for S K Offset. They soon decided to buy a large format (28”x40”) press. Now, Pradeep didn’t need to go to Delhi for the large format jobs. Meerut had no large format to meet this size demands. Pradeep says that he kept adding machines and equipment to his infrastructure to gradually bring all the demands of his customers inhouse. After, they installed a five colourpress in same format. They also expanded towards book publishing and printing with the new expanded capacity. “Since book printing required less supervision as compared to packaging, we concentrated our focus more on book printing. While book printing jobs constituted big orders taking 5-6 days to complete, packaging would require hourly supervision of processes involved. About 90% of our total production constituted book printing,” informs Pradeep. In the meantime, they have expanded their prepress and postpress units with state of art plate setter, cutting, folding and binding equipment’s. “We took care that all equipment matched our future expansion
pressideas/ commercial printing
plans. We had kept 28”x40” size as standard for most of them,” adds Pradeep.
Installing a brand new Heidelberg SM 74 In due course, SK offset installed a brand new Heidelberg Speedmaster SM 74 fourcolour press. He adds “We had worked with different machines. Heidelberg was still the coveted possession which we hadn’t worked on. We decided for a mid-size format Heidelberg press, since this could be more suited for the packaging printing” reasons Pradeep. The Speedmaster SM 74 processes a wide range of substrates - from lightweight paper to board with an operation speed of 15,000 sheets per hour. It also benefits from extremely user-friendly and ergonomic operation. The Prinect Press Center Compact with its innovative Intellistart processoriented operator guidance system enables straightforward and precise machine control Another key reason for Pradeep to install Heidelberg SM 74 was his relationship with Mr. Deepak, who takes care of the U.P region. They had been in touch for a long time and would discuss various matters during their regular meetings. Pradeep would seek his advice on machines and equipment’s. When he discussed with him the possibilities of finance for a new Heidelberg SM 74, the following developments led to their priced possession – the Heidelberg SM 74.
Pradeep: Preserving and living up to his goodwill
Whenever he reached the banks for a fresh loan, they would be always prepared to lend him any amount. “We have never missed on any installment. Our banks know that and we have been with the same banks all these years. Together we have done business worth crores,” claims a proud Pradeep. Pradeep is a preferred advisor for fellow printers of Meerut. Printers keep benefiting from his vast experience. He however doesn’t advise that anybody should jump into the printing field. “This field is very competitive - probably more competitive than many other business realms. I don’t think an inexperienced person should ever enter this field. Anybody who wants to make printing his profession should first gain adequate experience in printing, learning the nuances of the trade. After some time, he will be able to see things clearly and decide for himself whether to take the plunge or not,” he elucidates. After the sad demise of his brother who assisted Pradeep in S K Offset as partner, he is now assisted by his three sons. One of his sons is currently pursuing his Company Secretary course and also looks after the marketing, administration, production and accounts at S K. The younger sons have also been assigned work according to their experience. Pradeep oversees all the activities from the top. He is the guiding force for the whole S K Offset. When Pradeep installed his Heidelberg press, he also installed his CtP – a Heidelberg Suprasetter 106. The streamlined process from design to printing and further
has enormously helped S K Offset. “We weren’t satisfied with the plates got made from outside. The quality of printing and colours would just not be up to the mark,” says Pradeep. “With the Suprasetter accepting the complete files directly from our design department, we get the final output which hardly needs much manual efforts to meet our quality standards. This is also a bonus when it comes to convincing our customers regarding quality,” he adds. The ongoing digital printing revolution is of little concern for Pradeep. He considers the business is still far for him because he is catering to large-run jobs running into thousands and also feels digital is better suited for short runs. He has brought the efficiencies at S K Offset to optimum level; be it procurement of paper or ink, he gets direct supply from the manufacturers. Pradeep is very astute in his planning. He plans everything before hand and believes in the adage – think before you leap. “I am a negative person in the sense that I keep the drawbacks before the benefits. This negativity has helped me maintain my pace of growth. If my fear happens to be true, I am prepared beforehand; and if I am wrong, I have nothing to lose,” concludes Pradeep with a smile.
S K Offset is a known name in Meerut circles. They are one of the oldest printers of the city and the goodwill earned puts it among the best in the industry. Pradeep is a religious man who contributes actively to charitable activities. The temples in the city of Meerut use stationery provided by S K Offset. “I make it a point to provide as much products to the temples of the city as are possible or can be produced by us.” says Pradeep. A strong believer in hard work, Pradeep says that hard work always pays. He remembers days when he along with his brother would work till late night. Their first concern those days would be to repay the loan as soon as possible. This dedication earned him a strong relationship with their banks.

Esko sets the trend, Uniflex successfully puts it into practice Esko Full HD Flexo and Equinox prove to be award-winning solutions for Uniflex.
Esko’s customer JV Uniflex has won the Supreme Award at the recent FlexoTech International Print & Innovations Awards 2013 with its «Moskovskiy Kartofel» entry. The same entry also won the ‘Flexo job previously printed by another process’ category. “We are incredibly pleased with this prize. It’s like the Oscars for printing,” says Eugene Lungin, head of prepress at Uniflex. “It demonstrates our advances in flexo printing, a breakthrough which was possible thanks to the Esko products we implemented – Esko Full HD Flexo and Equinox color technology. We aim to transfer our jobs from rotogravure and offset to flexo, and Esko’s technology allows us to do so.” Founded in 1996, Uniflex today is one of the biggest flexo packaging and self-adhesive label specialists serving Russia, Kazakhstan and the Ukraine.
Industry recognition for flexo print quality that rivals gravure and offset
“As soon as we learned about Full HD Flexo, we decided to buy it, although it was the first commercial installation in the world. Pioneer work always contains a risk but brings greater rewards. This award is the proof of that.” - Lungin

As many as 15 awards were given to leading innovators in the flexo industry. The Supreme Award was won by JV Uniflex for its «Moskovskiy Kartofel» entry. “This category shows how the old limitations of flexo have been confined to history. The process now offers all that brand owners could want and this Supreme Winner takes flexo print quality significantly beyond that of gravure. A truly deserving winner,” stated the judges.
Looking back, Lungin comments on the job: “Our customer sent us the «Moskovskiy Kartofel» sample package produced with gravure. The goal was to reproduce it with flexo. By applying Esko Full HD Flexo and Equinox technology we reached such a bright, accurate and deep image that our customer prefers the flexo print to his gravure sample.”
Innovation, a ticket to success “This great quality improvement was possible thanks to combination of Esko Full HD Flexo, applied on photopolymer plates with the special composition of not only plain dots but also traditional round dots, and the unique Equinox technology for expanded gamut printing,” explains Lungin. By extensively using the possibilities of Equinox, Uniflex is able to reproduce a spot colour while maintaining the visual brand identity, and in addition, substantially expand the gamut of the image exactly where it is required. “With Equinox, we added one more colour to the «Moskovskiy Kartofel» image to make it brighter, richer and with more contrast,” says Lungin. Uniflex has always been at the forefront of innovation. It was the first company in CIS to install Esko Full HD Flexo. “We trust Esko and see big potential in its solutions and technologies. As soon as we learned about Full HD Flexo, we decided to buy it, although
of their work and of our Full HD Flexo technology,” comments Andrey Bataev, Esko’s General Manager Russian Federation & CIS. “Esko and Uniflex have an excellent, long-term relationship. Uniflex is more than a customer, they are a strategic partner because of our common goal – improving flexo print quality and pushing flexo printing to new production standards. Esko sets the trend, and it is great to see Uniflex successfully putting it into practice.”
it was the first commercial installation in the world. Pioneer work always contains a risk but brings greater rewards. This award is the proof of that,” enthuses Lungin.
Command win “We congratulate Uniflex for its breakthrough and are very proud with the recognition
According to Bataev, there is growth in the consumer goods market in Russia and CIS. He also notes increases in imports by local producers. This results in a greater volume of packages with more diversification and quality requirements. Press runs are getting shorter, which makes gravure an expensive option. Many customers who were using gravure for their work are now looking at what flexo can offer. New flexo capabilities like Full HD Flexo and Equinox allow to produce highly qualitative and attractive packages
combined with reduced production costs. “Uniflex’s breakthrough and success is not only made possible by Esko’s solutions. It is also the result of well coordinated team work and Uniflex’s professional skills,” Bataev concludes. “A technology can never work by itself. To be a winner, you need to use the best technology, have the right management, match your equipment, be in good shape and do your best. It’s fantastic to see this all come together at Uniflex!”

Heidelberg realigns its small-format product portfolio To phase out Printmaster GTO 52 and focus sales on Speedmaster SM 52, SX 52, Linoprint C 901 and C 751.
Print shops in the small-format offset printing sector are facing smaller run sizes, shorter delivery times, and tough competition on pricing. To stay competitive, more and more companies are turning to industrial production. Following the introduction of the successful Speedmaster SM 52 and SX 52, Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) has adapted its product portfolio for the new market conditions, thereby ensuring it covers the entire spectrum of relevant applications. As a consequence, production of the Printmaster GTO 52 will be phased out from March 2014. The highly productive Speedmaster SM 52 has long offered customers working with the Printmaster GTO 52 an effective springboard for further growth. And, since drupa 2012, the Speedmaster SX 52 has been available in configurations that can be tailored precisely to customer requirements. The press can also be ordered with the Anicolor short inking unit, which is ideal for the production of short print runs due to its extremely short makeready times and low paper waste. More than 30,000 printing units of the Speedmaster SM 52/SX 52 have already been sold worldwide.
The Speedmaster SX 52 with the Anicolor short inking unit is ideal for the production of short print runs. More than 30,000 printing units of the Speedmaster SM 52/SX 52 have already been sold worldwide.
In addition, the company’s Linoprint C 901 and C 751 digital printing systems offer print shops an attractive and cost-effective complementary solution for printing short and/or variable commercial runs. “We are adapting to the new requirements in the small-format segment and are optimizing our portfolio
for this market,” explains Stephan Plenz, member of the Management Board responsible for Heidelberg Equipment. “Because our portfolio for this segment comprises offset and digital printing technologies, customers benefit from the close interlinking of both worlds and can boost their competitive edge even further.”
Tried-and-tested machines for smallformat offset and digital printing The Speedmaster SM 52 is available as a two- and four-colour press with a standard delivery. Depending on the model, components such as Prinect Press Center Compact and the automatic washup devices for the inking unit and blanket and impression cylinders are standard features. In day-to-day work, the press more than meets requirements for flexibility in terms of materials and printing stock thickness and delivers short setup times and high production outputs of up to 15,000 sheets per hour. The Speedmaster SM 52 has also been designed to accommodate inline applications such as numbering, perforating, and envelope printing. Alongside the Speedmaster SM 52, Heidelberg also offers the Speedmaster SX 52 – a machine platform that can be customized for specific requirements. The press features state-of-the-art technology and an extensive range of configuration options such as Anicolor short inking unit technology, coating unit, printing stock thickness to 0.6 mm, perfecting

devices, and technology for security printing - all of which ensures that print shops can handle a broad and varied range of orders. From two to ten printing units, a range of deliveries are available depending on the model and to suit the space available and the print shop’s run sizes. Both series can naturally be integrated into the Prinect workflow and have been designed for ecological print production. Since drupa 2012, the Linoprint C 901 and Linoprint C 751 have been available with the new Prinect Digital Print Manager. Even without integration into a complete workflow, this solution provides users with a highly efficient and transparent digital print workflow with a wide range of functions, such as variable data management, postpress with digital inline finishing systems, and a document-oriented workflow. integration into the Prinect print shop workflow creates a seamless hybrid workflow between offset and digital printing that is unique in the industry.
As a result, customers in the A3 market segment can utilize a whole range of options to provide their end customers with the service they require.
AIFMP President launches “Proud to be a Printer” Sticker Mr. AMSG Ashokan recently visited Ludhiana for the first time to attend a function by the OPA (Offset Printers Association). Mr. Ashokan released the sticker ‘Proud to be a Printer’ produced by OPA and appreciated the activities of the association. Releasing the sticker he said, “Printing is the biggest invention of mankind till date. Printing had a solid past and definitely a bright future. Nobody can live without printing; you cannot think of a day without touching a printer.” He added, “In every city or town of our country
there is a printing press, but even then people are ignorant about this master craft. Every morning the Newspaper is at your breakfast table; can you realize the zeal of the industry behind it?” He applauded the OPA for this noble cause of educating the society about the place of printing in day to day life. Mr. Ashokan was accompanied by Mr. C D Kumaravel, Hony, General Secretary, Mr. Prakash R. Joshi, Vice President (West) and
Mr. Arvind B. Mardikar, Joint Secretary of the AIFMP to attend the executive body meeting of the Offset Printers Association. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Kushl Kumar Jain, Vice President, OPA said these stickers will be distributed free of cost to each and every printers’ association of India printed with the logo of that association. Certificate of membership were also awarded to the new members who joined the OPA by Mr. Ashokan.

Heidelberg Speedmaster & Suprasetter: The latest jewel in Laxmi Ganapathi Images’ crown Sri Laxmi Ganapathi installs first-ever Heidelberg Speedmaster SM 74 Press & Suprasetter A106 CtP in coastal Andhra Pradesh. Sri Laxmi Ganapathi Images is a spectacular growth story. From humble beginning with a letterpress printing 46 years ago in Kovvur, Andhra Pradesh, the firm has made significant headway to become a premier print shop in town. The latest Jewel in the crown for Sri Laxmi Ganapathi Images is the addition of Heidelberg Speedmaster SM 74 four-colour press and Suprasetter A 106 CtP equipment.
Covering the entire process chain from prepress through post-press in-house
“Progress is about the choices we make. Heidelberg has turned out to be one of our best business decisions.” – Bhadra Rao
Both state-of-the-art Heidelberg machines were installed at a new branch of the company in Rajahmundry recently. With the latest investment, the four-decade old company is now equipped with contemporary technology in-house to cover the entire process chain from prepress through post-press. It is no mean feat for a small-town outfit. The credit goes to the present owners Mr. M.V. Nagabhushana Rao and Mr. M.V. Bhadra Rao, who assumed control of the press in 1978 from their father and founder Sri M.V. Satyanarayana. Under the leadership of this dynamic duo, the firm is constantly expanding its horizons to meet the new challenges in this highly competitive and fragmented business. The company is engaged in printing Hindu literature, academic text books, workbooks, brochures, posters, magazines and wedding cards. Prior to the
rendezvous with Heidelberg, Sri Laxmi Ganapathi Images has been working with used machines. The decision to go with Heidelberg equipment was certainly not spontaneous. Mr. Bhadra Rao visited Heidelberg’s Wiesloch production facility in Germany to get a personal handle on the company and the equipment he planned to buy. But, once he set his eyes on the press, and the ensuing demo, his perspective underwent a 180- degree transformation. At that point, the decision to buy the Speedmaster SM 74 became a no-brainer. “It was love at first sight”, he recalls with a chuckle. “We were looking to improve print quality and speed, while reducing paper wastage”, he adds. The Speedmaster SM 74 fourcolour press matched his requirements perfectly. The Prinect Press Center of the Speedmaster SM 74, with its innovative intellistart process-oriented operator guidance system, enables straightforward and precise machine control, while the speedcompensated Alcolor dampening system produces brilliant print results. The Speedmaster SM 74 can process a wide range of printing substrates, from thin paper to board, ranging in thickness from 0.03 mm (0.0012 inches) to 0.6 mm (0.024 inches). Automation components like autoplate reduce make-ready and setup times phenomenally compared to other presses.

The high performance pre-press equipment, Suprasetter A106 CtP The Print-shop has also installed the stateof-the art, Heidelberg Suprasetter A106 CtP–high performance pre-press equipment, which offers exceptional smart plate handling. The equipment can process 18 plates per hour with plate formats from 370 × 323 mm to 930 × 1,060 mm. Equipped with unique thermal laser technology developed
by Heidelberg, the plate-setters are almost totally protected against production failures by the Intelligent Diode System (IDS). The Heidelberg experience has turned both the Raos into hardcore Heidelberg loyalists. “The investment is already beginning to pay off,” says the excited Nagabhushana Rao. “Ever since the equipments were installed, the orders are pouring in”, he adds happily. His enthusiasm is contagious, as this is also
Heidelberg’s maiden installation in Coastal Andhra Pradesh, an unexplored market ripe with potential. Looking ahead, the Raos’ are already considering further investment in Heidelberg equipments in the next few years. This time their choice would run on the lines of a Heidelberg CD 102 press in the 70 x 100 format and a Polar cutter.

With four large conferences (CONTEC, Publishers Launch Frankfurt, the International Rights Directors Meeting and Frankfurt StoryDrive) and a select professional programme of more than 20 seminars, workshops and business breakfasts spread across the Book Fair week, the Frankfurt Academy, the international conference brand of the Frankfurt Book Fair, offered a wealth of opportunities for networking, further training and the exchange of ideas. Britta Friedrich, Director of Events and Programmes with the Frankfurt Book Fair, was pleased with the result: around 3,500 participants from 72 countries registered for the events.
involvement of the audience, more than 60 publishing and media experts discussed the future of content and technology in publishing houses and the book trade. They included Stephen Smith, CEO of the STM publisher Wiley, Internet guru Sascha Lobo, Rachel Fershleiser of tumblr, Nick Perrett form HarperCollins, Douglas Sexton and Udi Chatow of HP, and many more. “We are very happy with the way this first CONTEC went,” said Britta Friedrich. “We devised a programme that took all areas of the book industry into consideration. The important thing for us was to identify global perspectives and trends in the international markets.” “CONTEC was an effective format – one that will drive forward the industry and the way we think,” said Ronald Schild, managing director of MVB Marketingund Verlagsservice des Buchhandels GmbH, who was one of the speakers at CONTEC. “The speeches and discussions painted a clear picture of just how dynamic our industry can be. The conversations between the experts themselves underlined the innovative potential we have at hand. We need to pick up on this and converted into real business models for the book industry.” And as US author Hugh Howey (Wool series) observed, “The good thing about tech and book conferences like CONTEC is that we use them to discuss things that, at other conferences, will only be on the agenda in two years time.”
CONTEC Frankfurt debuts Some 428 participants from 32 countries came together in the Marriot Hotel Frankfurt for the debut of CONTEC Frankfurt, which took place on the day before the start of the Frankfurt Book Fair. With the

held on Tuesday, 8 October 2013, and it too provided a conference day rich in information and expertise. The event attracted 140 participants from 25 countries. The most important topics were the international expansion of the large technology enterprises and players in the e-book market, the significance of social reading, and subscription models for digital content. “Any publisher who is not already among the first to be thinking about digital strategies is making a mistake,” said Russ Grandinetti, VP Kindle Content with Amazon. “That is not a moral statement, but an arithmetical one.”
The Rights Directors’ Meeting and StoryDrive At the Rights Directors’ Meeting, the agenda included new forms and potentials of usage for digital content in important licensing markets. This year’s regional focus was on the Arab world. At the CEO Panel on Wednesday, 9 October, the CEO of Penguin Random House, Markus Dohle, voiced his position regarding the publishing world’s biggest ever merger, and about the urgent questions facing international publishing. He said that the paradigm change in book marketing – the direct access to readers – is one of the biggest challenges that publishers face, and
that, in the future, publishing houses will only stay relevant if they can reach more and more consumers directly. On the Friday of the fair, the all-media conference StoryDrive revealed itself to be interactive and international. Live in the hall and on the social media channels, around 300 participants from 23 countries, and from all segments of the media industries discussed pioneering projects that are set to bring long-term changes, not only to the art of storytelling, but to the media business as a whole. This, the fourth outing for the conference, was held under the motto “fiction is real”. It examined topics such as augmented reality, the democratisation of the media world through consumer participation, interactive virtual reality in computer games, and crossmedia developments in the TV business. Sarah Doole, Creative Director Worldwide Drama, FreemantleMedia Group, UK: “StoryDrive is extremely innovative and inspiring. The involvement of the audience means we get a lot of input. And, as a representative of the TV industry, I must say that I can learn a lot from the gamers.”
The Intensive Training Sessions
Frankfurt Academy, each of them lasting three hours, were also well attended, especially the seminars on e-book design, rights and licensing and digital strategies. With about 100 participants, the Young Professionals Day on Saturday, organised in cooperation with the mediacampus frankfurt, was likewise a great success. The Frankfurt Academy events on rights and licensing were supported by the Copyright Clearance Center, and the CONTEC conference and the intensive training sessions received support from HP.

Divine printing with Heidelberg Divine Printers, of Chalakudy, Kerala publishes a devotional magazine ‘Vachanostsavam’ as well as The Bible for distribution among the devotees. The printer has recently boosted its production and quality capability with a couple of Heidelberg equipments.

Chalakudy, Kerala based Divine Printers is a known name in the region best known for the devotional magazine titled “Vachanostsavam”. Over five lakh copies of this magazine, in seven languages, is printed every issue for distribution to all devotees. Divine Printers also prints “The Bible” for distribution to all the devotees coming to the Divine Centre campus which got established near Chalakudy railway station in 1993. Initially Divine used to outsource these jobs. Later it decided to print all in house by establishing its own press. “We started with an Orient Web Offset press from TPH,” says Father Joseph, GM of Divine Printers. The soon added a single colour HMT sheet-fed, a two colour Manugraph Web presses and then an Orient. All these were in operation for the last seventeen years. But with considerable increase in the circulation of the magazine as well as distribution of The Bible, they decided to go for a brand new four colour press to meet these increased demand and improve quality as well. Divine Printers got started in the year 1995, two years after the establishment of the Divine Centre campus near Chalakudy railway station. “But due to lack of space there we moved over to the present bigger campus. We then felt the need to have our own press. The main objective of starting this press in house was to meet all the print demands of the centre like cards,
brochures, forms etc,” says Father Joseph.
Heidelberg, as the first choice for fourcolour printing When they decided to add a brand new four colour press, Heidelberg was always their first choice, notwithstanding their considering various other available options. “We did get offers,” says Father Joseph, “from all leading press manufacturers. We then enquired in the market and the unanimous recommendation was in favour of Heidelberg. We also went and personally saw the operation of Heidelberg presses installed at some of the leading printers in Ernakulam. Also, before finally deciding on Heidelberg, we consulted the company’s experts who suggested the present Speedmaster SM 74 press which best suited our need and applications.” Post Heidelberg installation, Divine hasn’t added any new applications to their existing portfolio although the print volumes of their in house magazine and Bible have considerably increased. This is apart from the quality which too has got a big boost with the new press. “Apart from these we also print outside commercial jobs. The number of outside jobs has increased and we generate substantial revenue every month to pay back the loan. Though we have not promoted our press to potential commercial customers, by word of mouth, the services rendered
pressideas/ commercial printing
by our press has spread and we are getting more and more walk-in customers day by day. We plan to recover our investment within six years,” reveals Father Joseph. Divine earlier used to outsource its plates and has recently invested in a Heidelberg CtP and plate processor. With increased activities, we wanted to have it (plate production) in house and we invested in it. Now we make plates for outside customers also. All our technicians are well trained by Heidelberg at the Chennai training centre. A
few of our technicians have joined us from other commercial printers. They are well trained on these machines and equipments. The support from Heidelberg is also very good. They are here anytime we need them,” informs Father Joseph. According to the Father, the Heidelberg CtP installation has noticeably increased plate production at Divine and improved both their plate quality and print quality. This is evidenced by the considerable increase in the number of walk-in customers. This trend
is bound to improve in the future as well, he says. Father Joseph tells that they are not planning to enter any new segments or applications in near future. “We are now a complete print solution provider with all the required equipments in house, from pre-press to post press. We will put more efforts on the marketing aspect to commercialize our press to outside customers,” he concludes.

Paul Büetiger invests in digital-ready Saddle Stitcher from Muller Martini Switzerland’s market leader in printing for the healthcare sector chooses the Presto II Digital.
From the beginning of next year, Paul Büetiger AG in Biberist (Switzerland) will produce its offset and digitally printed insert booklets for the healthcare and pharmaceutical sectors and commercial products using a Presto II Digital Saddle Stitcher from Muller Martini. In the future, the company will be able to cut out a production step, produce more efficiently and reduce delivery times, especially in the short-run segment.
“The Presto II Digital is the perfect hybrid solution for conventional offset printing and digital printing. That makes it the ideal saddle stitcher for graphic arts companies that plan to enter digital printing in the near future or are already printing digitally.” - Adrian Mayr.
As Switzerland’s market leader in the printing of healthcare inserts and the company with the second largest market share in the pharmaceutical printing field in Switzerland, Paul Büetiger AG specializes in the production of booklets in (ultra) small sizes and (ultra) small runs. The annual production of 200 to 300 million copies is subject to the strict norms of total quality management (TQM), which according to company owner and managing director Paul Büetiger means zero error tolerance both in printing and print finishing. “We can’t even afford an error rate of 0.01 per thousand in the healthcare and pharmaceutical areas because of potential legal consequences.”
For Offset and Digital Printing That is one of the reasons why the successful businessman opted for the new Presto II Digital saddle stitcher from Muller Martini – the barcode scanner with an automatic signature image recognition Asir scanning head provides maximum reliability. Another reason was that until now Paul
Büetiger AG produced its small booklets with up to 120 pages (products with a higher number of pages are perfect bound) using a 1509 Saddle Stitcher from Muller Martini, extended with cameras, and a punching machine, likewise extended by the company. “In the future we’ll be able to produce everything inline using one machine, which means we can cut out a step, produce more quickly and further reduce our delivery times,” says Büetiger. In addition, the printing plant will benefit from more efficient cutting of ultra small sizes, having worked closely with Muller Martini on enhancing the cutting process. Paul Büetiger AG, which uses equipment including a Concepta web printing press from Muller Martini, will produce both offset and digitally printed products using the new saddle stitcher. A digital sheet-fed press from Canon/Océ is mainly used for printing short runs from 50 to a maximum of 1,000 copies. These short runs have gained in significance, in the sense of print on demand, “because our customers want to keep their stock levels as low as possible,” explains Büetiger. In addition to healthcare and pharmaceutical booklets, the company, which was established in 1926 and employs 65 people, also prints traditional commercial products – “albeit on a smaller scale,” as Büetiger explains – which will also be wire-stitched using the new Presto II Digital. The new Presto II Digital will be commissioned with

three twinfeeders, a cover folder feeder and belt delivery in Biberist at the beginning of December. Paul Büetiger plans for it to be running at full capacity by February.
Great size flexibility At Paul Büetiger AG the paper is conveyed from the digital sheet-fed press via a singlesheet flat pile feeder from MBO to a pocket fold unit, likewise from MBO. There it is cross folded once or several times, and then scored in the processing folder and given a length fold. The barcode scanner with the automatic signature image recognition Asir scanning head ensures that the products are tipped onto the saddle stitcher chain with the correct make up. The solution with the pocket fold unit – small
sheet sizes with four-page signatures can also be moved directly from the flat pile feeder to the processing folder – allows greater flexibility with regard to both signatures (4/8/12 pages) and sizes. It also enables higher production speeds. The Presto II Digital produces at a maximum of 9,000 cycles per hour and processes up to 30,000 incoming signatures.
Digital-ready means high degree of investment protection “With its modular design, the Presto II Digital is the perfect hybrid solution for conventional offset printing and digital printing,” says Adrian Mayr, Saddle Stitching Systems Product Manager at Muller Martini. “That makes it the ideal saddle stitcher for graphic arts companies that plan to enter digital
Be prepared to pay more for Paper Products As per the communication received by the association from Mr. Niraj Sinha (VP) Ballarpur Industries Ltd , Paper mills are being impacted severely by the domestic fibre deficit scenario & its impact on wood prices. Wood is being transported across the length and breadth of the country and is defying the generally accepted practice of procurement from the catchment area. Also, for the first time in the history of Indian Paper Industry, import of wood has become a reality. As per Mr. Sinha, this cost push has further been compounded by increase in prices of speciality chemicals, energy, transport & logistics, making it increasingly difficult for them to operate profitably. In view of the above and in line with market scenario updates, they have decided to increase prices for all uncoated hi brights & creamwove papers by Rs.2000 PMT gross. For Copiers, Poster Paper, Sunlit Cartridge, Ledger & BCB, this increase will be Rs.1500 PMT gross. These increases will be effective from 1st December 2013. Commenting on the issue Mr. Parveen Aggarwal said, paper mills already increased the prices by 12% in the month of September due to higher dollar price and now with this increase of about 15% in the current prices, the paper products, like note books, corrugated and duplex boxes, labels and other stationery items are bound to increase.
He further added, “If the current trend of increase in paper prices keeps on moving like this it’ll be very difficult to survive for the Printing and Packaging industry. On the other hand he said, be prepared to pay more for the school books, packaging, office stationery, sweet boxes and note books etc from the next year. It’ll be a severe blow to the total industry as each industrial unit will have to now pay more for every printed product they are using. This in turn will increase the overall pricing and is going to very seriously affecting the end user.” Mr. Kushl Jain (Vice President, OPA) advised all the printer brothers to keep the track of the paper prices, as the fluctuating paper pricing can hamper the profitability of the printing units too. He appealed the printers for a 15% increase the prices to cover the additional cost of inputs this increase in price will affect hosiery boxes, sweet boxes, packaging, note books, school books, stationery and other printed items should be done. Mr. Kamal Chopra (General Secretary) said it is to be noted that this almost third revision this year since January, recently the paper mills have increased the price from 1st September 2013 by Rs. 3000/- PMT. That was done due to increased price of dollar. Government agencies must control the prices of paper otherwise it’ll increase the inflation to newer highs. School and college books will also cost more for the coming sessions.
printing in the near future or are already printing digitally.” Companies currently still printing exclusively using the offset method can retrofit their existing saddle stitchers at any time in the future to include the digital option and use them either for digital sheet-fed printing (along the lines of the Büetiger solution using a flat pile feeder, pocket fold unit and processing folder), for digital web printing (using an unwinding system, cross cutting and processing folder) or even for combined sheet-fed/web printing applications. “That’s why the modular saddle stitchers from Muller Martini provide customers with a particularly high degree of investment protection,” says Mayr.

KODAK SONORA Plates estimated to save 265 million liters of water in next 12 months Kodak’s SONORA Process Free Plate technology could lead to impressive water savings for the commercial printing industry. Based on sales projections, Kodak estimates that in the next year, use of SONORA Plates could be directly responsible for saving up to 265 million liters of water. The forecast is based on new adoption data for the process-free plates, which remove the need for a plate processor in the prepress stage of a print operation. KODAK SONORA Plates eliminate the need for water to process plates before they are put on the press, setting a new standard for responsibility in prepress in terms of water conservation. Despite estimates that only one percent of the world’s water is suitable for drinking, industry and agriculture, water scarcity has long been considered a problem relegated only to specific locales where climate or geography limit access to clean water.
However, it’s now predicted that even waterrich nations such as the United States could see a water scarcity crisis in 30 percent of its cities in the next four years, and Brazil, the world’s most water-rich nation, faces water supply deficits of more than 80 percent. Both an increase in demand from growing populations and a lagging water treatment infrastructure in emerging economies contribute to the spread of this global issue beyond traditionally water-starved nations. Water conservation has become a priority that every industry needs to address. “In the print industry, it is our responsibility to save resources where we can and continually consider where we can use technology to best minimize the drain on those resources,” said Rich Rindo, general manager of Kodak’s worldwide graphics marketing organization. “Allowing printers to take water use out of the process entirely introduces a new era

of sustainability in platemaking. Apart from the chemistry and energy removed from the prepress process, the water savings alone is enough to make printers think twice about the impact they’re having on the environment with their operations.” With traditional processed plates, water is used to run the plate processor and clean it after production, as well as to run a rinse/ gum unit if baking plates. In addition, water is mixed with concentrated processing chemistry. With SONORA Plates, this water can be removed from the platemaking process entirely, conserving a natural resource and reducing the load on water treatment facilities. SONORA Plates also hold promise for print operations in emerging industrial centers with limited or no water treatment infrastructure. Kodak is seeing rapid growth in SONORA Plate adoption, with more than 400 new and converted customers. While water is essential to commercial printing industry operations, Kodak is also mindful of its own water use. Kodak manufacturing facilities around the world closely monitor water consumption and have achieved a nearly 25 percent reduction in usage since 2009. Kodak has been committed to developing sustainable technology and practices to keep up with an ever-changing world. With products such as SONORA Plates, Kodak is delivering on its promise to drive innovations that lead the industry.

Aksorn Art Paper Cup & Packaging make the move into Flexo with Edale Aksorn Art Paper Cup and Packaging Company, based in Samutsakorn, Thailand were producing such high volumes of jobs that their four existing offset presses could no longer keep up with demand, and when the time came for their next investment, they decided to ‘go flexo’ and purchased an eight colour Edale combination UV/IR Carton line with a wide range of additional options for their newly renovated factory. Founded in 1972, Aksorn Art Paper Cup and Packaging Company, part of the wider Aksorn Art Group, is one of Thailand’s well known suppliers of offset printing services and innovative packaging solutions. They produce all paper cups for hot and cold food and drink products – both single and double walls. Joe Wongvorakul, Managing Director, says “We decided on the 8 colour Edale FL-5 Carton as it can drastically reduce time; the biggest problem we were finding with offset were the bottlenecks – this will be eradicated with the FL-5 Carton, and allow us to become more efficient in both cost – and time, and enable us to meet customer order demands quicker.” The relationship between the companies began at Label Expo Europe in 2011, where Joe Wongvorakul met with Edale’s Thai agent Edale Asia Pacific (this division, formerly Rotary Technology Partnership) to learn more about Edale’s product offering, and they remained in regular contact with Edale trialling some of Aksorn’s jobs on one of their existing customer’s machine to see the outcome. Joe Wongvorakul says, “I have great confidence in the management team and the strong distribution network, which played a big factor in why we chose to work with Edale, as well as the top quality R&D and manufacturing teams. I look forward to continuing to work together to ensure that the machine remains as futureproof as possible in the upcoming years”. The Edale FL-5 Carton can print up to 600 micron cartonboard and guarantee a high speed which will ensure Aksorn we receive a rapid return on their investment. The FL-5 Carton also consists of a high

As standard, the machine has servo drives on each print head providing pre-register, autoregister and print length control features. This, combined with the revolutionary print head designs, ensures job change times and set up wastage are kept to a minimum with the ability to perform a full station colour change in under 70 seconds. The newly installed flexo press offers several advantages over traditional presses, including minimal ink usage and reduced waste to support environmental considerations, while the fast make-ready times enhance productivity rates, especially for very large projects such as this. The FL-5 Carton line can be customised to suit the exact requirements of the customer and this specific machine was designed to combine the multiple processes normally associated with folding carton production, in a single pass, thus rationalising the production process, stock holding and eliminating work in progress. “The sale of the press for the production of high quality carton board food samples into Thailand, and in particular a predominantly offset company, really puts Edale on the map and highlights the latest flexo

The World’s Biggest Bookstore is located in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, at 20 Edward St, just north of the Toronto Eaton Centre. Since the site of the bookstore has been sold to a real estate developer, it will close to the public in February.
Kodak addresses brand protection solutions for pharmaceutical industry Brand protection is a major issue for companies around the globe, but in the pharmaceutical realm, the issue takes on increased importance because of the extreme health risks involved. Experts in the field gathered last month in London for the 2nd Annual Pharma Anti-Counterfeiting Congregation 2013 to talk about everything from brand protection technologies and government strategies to international partnerships and best practices. Kodak exhibited its broad range of brand protection solutions and presented in the conference program. Experts estimate that up to 10 percent of all drugs worldwide are counterfeit, meaning that consumers may be taking drugs that have been manufactured incorrectly or with inferior ingredients. The drug industry loses billions of dollars each year to drug counterfeiting, and consumers need to be better protected. Attendees spent two days discussing these issues and the innovative solutions that are available today. “Advancements in track and trace technology
and serialization are helping brand owners and manufacturers better control the supply chain while providing a way for retailers and consumers to verify the authenticity of products,” explained Thaddeus Bowen, Kodak’s Director of Business Development for Brand Protection Solutions. “This problem is massive in scope. We have a very knowledgeable team with backgrounds in imaging, supply chain, law enforcement, and more. The solutions we bring to market are helping customers save money and protect the integrity of their brands.”

During the conference, Bowen presented a session entitled “Detecting Diversion & Counterfeiting: Dual Serialization and Ubiquitous Monitoring.” In it, he explained Kodak’s approach to the problem and shared some examples of successful prevention strategies. With increasing activity in black market, gray market, product tampering and patent and trademark infringement, brands are in a constant battle. New technologies make it easier for others to replicate products or

Expert consensus statement finds paper towels the most hygienic way to dry hands Leading European microbiologists and hospital hygienists have produced a scientific consensus statement upholding evidence that hand drying using paper towels is associated with lower numbers of microbes on the hands and in the washroom environment than using warm air dryers or high velocity air dryers. The consensus statement provides sound advice for those offering services to offices, manufacturing plants and all workplaces to provide clients with a washroom environment that upholds the highest standards of hygiene. The six experts, working in hospitals and universities in Belgium, Germany, Italy, Sweden and the UK have signed an eight-point consensus - Hand drying: an important part of hand hygiene. It highlights the importance of hand drying, following thorough hand washing and notes that air drying blows water containing microbes off the hands which can contaminate others in the washroom environment. Signatories to the consensus examined a wide selection of scientific literature and also the studies sponsored by the European Tissue Symposium in particular those
26

undertaken by Eurofins-Inlab in Germany and the University of Westminster in the UK. “From the results we have examined, it appears that there may be a greater risk of exposure to microbes associated with some types of hand driers. There was an increased level of microbial contamination on and beneath air driers, particularly jet air driers. These findings have implications for the prevention of spread of microbes and infections and could result in reduced illness and time off sick and so ultimately provide economic benefit too,” said Marc Van Ranst, professor in virology and chairman of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Leuven in Belgium, and one of the signatories to the consensus. “We urge that they be explored further by companies, cleaning and facilities’ managers and beyond.” Hand hygiene is recognised as the most important standard measure to prevent cross contamination or transmission of nosocomial hospital acquired infections. The World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends the use of paper towels in its poster on hand washing. The consensus statement will
hopefully prompt further research and steer policy guidance in all workplace washrooms – particularly those where workers are involved in the preparation of food. “Paper tissue absorbs water and microorganisms,” said Roberto Berardi, chairman of the European Tissue Symposium. “It is crucial that washrooms offer a method of hand drying that minimises the risk of re-contaminating the hands and blowing microbes onto yourself, others or surfaces around you,” concluded Roberto Berardi, chairman of the European Tissue Symposium. “This scientific consensus is an important step in supporting our efforts to promote paper towels as the most hygienic hand-drying solution.”

Gharda to expand with new plant in Panoli Gharda Plastics, the high performance engineering polymers division of Gharda Chemicals Limited, launched its speciality lubricious solution for industrial and business appliances, incorporating various reinforcements in G-PAEK and GAZOLE grades. This collaborative development with other industrial partners is aimed at applications that require very high wear resistance. The G-PAEK product family is based on Poly Ether Ketone (PEK) and GAZOLE - representing freshly commercialized thermoplastic alloys of PEK and Poly benzimidazole (PBI) Now Mumbai-based Gharda Chemicals Ltd. plans to open a commercial scale plant in Panoli India for making specialized engineering resins polyetherketone, polyetheretherketone and polybenzimidazole, using what it says is a new production method. The company will decide final capacity and investment details later this year, and is aiming for an April 2015 startup for the new facility in Panoli, India, said Prakash Trivedi, head of the polymer strategic business unit for Gharda. “Ghrada is building a major commercial plant.” Trivedi said the company process for making PEK is produced with a single monomer and is based in chlorine rather than fluorine like other PEK manufacturers. He said PEK capacity could be up to 1,000 metric tons annually. Dr. Trivedi further explained that, Gharda is the first in India in its kind with two featured wear grades, G-PAEK 1230FCT and GAZOLE
6430FCT have easy flow characteristics for injection moulding of intricate multi-cavity parts. Their heat deflection temperature of 350 °C - 360 °C makes them suitable for demanding high heat resistance applications. These are far superior in performance to the commercially available engineering alternatives of polyether imides (PEI), Polyimide (PI), poly phenylene sulphide (PPS), poly ether ether ketone (PEEK) - and exhibit exceptional wear, chemical and thermal resistance. Additionally, the G-PAEK & GAZOLE FCT grades display excellent mechanical properties, creep properties and dimensional stability. PTFE does have a low coefficient of friction, however its wear resistance especially at high temperatures is poor. The FCT grades also have low coefficient of friction, and display low wear rates even at high temperatures. The company has been researching the new grades for the last few years, and has been producing some of them in pilot or semicommercial volumes at an existing Gharda petrochemical plant in Ankleshwar, in the state of Gujarat, 250 kilometers north of Mumbai Mr. Tushar Parida, of Gharda added. The comparable specific flexural strength of G-PAEK & GAZOLE FCT grades to metals provides a significant cost savings potential to the manufacturer. Gharda’s high performance thermoplastics offer weight savings, easy machining and moulding options with greater design flexibility. This allows the customer to produce parts with challenging geometries as required. It eliminates the costly production steps that are necessary for metals. 8

When the new plant in Panoli opens it will also make the monomers the firm uses, and the company believes it can manufacture the three polymers cheaper in India, “Gharda is started marketing and developing it in a major way,” Trivedi added. Gharda is a global science-based company active in specialty polymers, speciality pigments & agrochemicals. For more than 20 years, it has developed high-performance plastics successfully in new applications with products helping customers make their applications more efficient and consequently more competitive.

Functional and barrier coatings for paper and board to reach $5.1 billion by 2018 The global market for functional and barrier coatings used in paper and board applications was worth an estimated $4.2 billion in 2012, and is expected to increase by almost 420,000 tonnes by 2018 according to a new market report by Smithers Pira. The Future of Functional and Barrier Coatings for Paper and Board to 2018 by Smithers Pira explores the drivers and trends behind this impressive growth. The report offers a comprehensive overview of the industry, including quantitative market sizes and forecasts divided by country and end-use. The study reports that demand is fairly evenly spread across the three major sectors: the Americas, EMEA and Asia-Pacific. The US holds the largest share of the global market at 28% of the total volume in 2012. However, in coming years there will be a marked shift towards the Asia-Pacific sector and China will usurp the US’ leadership position, increasing its share to 26% of the market in 2018, while the US will slip to 25%. The expected economic recovery will mean
increased disposable income and therefore a growth in household expenditure on products within the functional and barrier coating market. Changes in consumer lifestyles and demographics, such as a growing demand for convenience, on-the-go meals and smaller packs have led to increased use of functional and barrier coatings for the paper and board sector. Recycling and sustainability concerns are also important
Asia Pacific Region wider Edale brand. The office is the next step for Edale who see Asia Pacific as the next big growth area in their expansion plans. Edale Asia Pacific, headed up by Tony Law, General Manager, and Pasin Sritong, Sales Manager, have already sold three Edale machines into the region. A five colour FL-1 compact flexo press for labels in Bangkok, an eight colour FL-5 Carton line for the production of paper cups into Thailand and most recently a six colour FL-3 label and flexible packaging press into Malaysia. Edale Asia Pacific have already spent a great deal of time at Edale’s UK Head Office getting an in-depth feel for the product portfolio, participating in various agent training days and a weeks in-depth training during the factory acceptance for the FL-5 Carton line, this is being followed by another weeks training during an FL-3 press installation in the UK in mid November.
“We couldn’t be happier to be involved in the newly formed Edale Asia Pacific. Having worked with Edale for a number of years in a separate division, we are already impressed with the way that Edale do business – as well as their range of machinery. Edale being a UK manufacturer, means machine quality is guaranteed to be world class”, says Tony Law. “We are pleased to have Edale Asia Pacific join our growing team of sales agents” states James Boughton, Managing Director of Edale. “Their key industry relationships and extensive knowledge of flexography, combined with the ability to service such a wide area make for a perfect fit for our growth strategies in these regions.” Edale Asia Pacific will manage sales efforts for the countries both directly and through a team of distributors, as well as providing an additional level of service and support for valued customers in the area.
factors. Many retailers are insisting on traceability of source materials and environmental awareness in their suppliers, which is creating a need for biodegradable, recyclable or compostable coating materials for these packaging applications. Cost remains at the forefront of everyone’s minds, from the raw material suppliers right through to the final consumers. Many coatings consist of polyethylene or aluminium or both, so raw material price volatility in these markets increases the pressure on manufacturers to come up with viable alternatives at competitive prices - while still offering the same characteristics as the materials they are intended to replace. This is easier said than done, and commercially viable volumes and prices are still some way in the future. The packaging of food and beverages accounts for 85% of the demand for these coating materials, and within this group above average growth in demand can be expected in the fresh, chilled and frozen food sectors over the medium term. Good growth prospects are also anticipated in the much lower volume non-food applications, including tobacco packaging and reel and ream wrapping. Almost 40% of coating materials are used in the beverage and liquids sector, mainly in the form of extrusion polymers and aluminium foil laminate. The Future of Functional and Barrier Coatings for Paper and Board to 2018 is available for £3,950.

Director, Suba Solutions says that the response they got at PAMEX was satisfactory and it provided them ‘a platform to meet all the customers at one place’. The showcased refractory and embossing machine can be used by both Digital as well as Offset printers to add value to their printed products, according to Vaidyalingam.
Advanced Graphic Systems focus on new generation Akoe Flatbed Sample Cutting Machine Advanced Graphic Systems focused on the new generation Akoe Flatbed Sample Cutting Machine from their principal, Cut CNC from China. The new machine by Cut CNC is designed for the packaging, digital and flat bed printing markets. “This machine is capable of cutting any kind of material and is available from sizes 900 x 600 mm up to 2500 x 1600mm,” informs Vishnu Kamat, Associate Vice President Sales, Advanced Graphic Systems. It can cut any material up to 15 mm thickness, and can help in making small mock ups etc. With some additional routers it can also cut acrylics, aluminium boards and MDF. “It is always good to diversify,” says Vishnu on their recent addition. “We always focus on offering something new to our customers.
We are sure our customers will benefit from this new offering and it is evident from the response for the product we have had in this show,” adds Vilas Gupte, who was also present with Vishnu at the stands. They however termed the overall response as fairly good but below expectations. “Compared to last Print Pack, the response is much less in this show,” says Vishnu. Speaking further on the new Akoe, Vishnu adds, “The packaging market has been very much in need of such a product. Though such products are already available in the market, they are not backed by timely and good service, technical support, spares availability and above all economical cost. We are trying to bridge this huge gap present in the market. The existing products are in the higher price product range which is not affordable to the lower or mid end package producer. There is a huge demand for this product as per our market study.” Both Vilas and Vishnu are of the opinion that the emerging Tier 2 cities in the country can now be chosen as future print exhibitions. “This way many visitors from the printing industry who are unable to make it to Delhi, can be benefited by visiting such shows and see the latest offerings,” they say.

The machine can print 12.57”x47” and with advanced features like RADF (Reverse Automatic Document Feeder),
“The response at the show has been good in terms of quality visitors, though less on the number of visitors. The industry performance has been good in terms of increase in print volumes,” says Nilesh when asked about the experience at the show. “Konica is the leader in the light production and mid production segments and we are very optimistic of our future growth. Next year being an election year, the print volume is bound to go up further. We see future growth in leasing and MPS (Managed Print Services),” he concludes.
Customer automation, user friendliness and special country dedicated products by Esko “The show is very silent and that shows that whoever comes here are serious visitors and the leads are very good,” says Srihari K Rao, Sales Manager, South Asia, Esko. He is also of the view that there were few visitors from the southern region. “Primarily the visitors are from the north and western India. Probably the market situation and the increased cost of visiting the show are the factors for this,” he thinks. He also believes that the trend is changing with more and more Indian visitors turning to international shows. He gives the reason for this change as more value for the visitors for their money spent in these shows. Esko launched a new version of its prepress software Suite version 12.1. “This new Suite 12.1 has a lot of automation and EOI which we want to showcase to our visitors here,” informs Srihari. They also focused on their packaging hardware solutions and the Kongsberg cutting table XE10. “More and more commercial printers are moving into packaging and are looking for quality packaging equipments. There is growth happening in the packaging segment, lots of SKU’s are generated because run lengths are getting shorter. This is an opportunity for us to be here to present our solutions to our customers,” he adds. Esko had a double digit growth in India last

Live Objects is PACKZ´s innovative technology for making active information panels, dynamic registration marks and live designs. “This is very new in the market and is accessible for any size of companies. It’s open, faster and works on window platform,” asserts Liesbet. “What makes it different from similar products available in the market is its being open and flexible. You don’t have to import files into it to work with and that makes it user friendly and much faster than other similar products,” he adds. Packz has launched the product just a couple of month back in the United States and started marketing it at the Label Expo, Brussels. It then went to Germany and is now in India. “We hope to complete some installations here soon with the active support of our channel partners Malhotra Graphics,” says Liesbet. “With the addition of Packz software we have a complete package for the packaging industry in India,” says Bimal Chaku, VPMarketing & Sales, Malhotra Graphics. The new software will complement Malhotra’s existing extensive packaging portfolio which includes Flexcel and Thermoflex from Xeikon. “We are demonstrating this software with two major packaging printers in the country. The software has been competitively priced. It is receiving a good response in the show and we hope to finalise some deals. Customers have been eagerly waiting for such a good product for a long time,” concludes Bimal.

because of greater frequency of exhibitions and repeat showcases by solutions providers. “The visitors who are nowadays visiting these shows are generally from smaller cities and those who do not have such exposure to new products and technologies in venues closer to them. For them these shows give lot of exposure. However, for metro visitors, these up to an extent become repeat showcases. For tier-II city visitors, shows like Pamex are just as international expos are for the metro visitors,” he sums up. Noida as show venue this time has been more acceptable for Nikumb. “We had some hesitation last time, but this time, considering the excellent infrastructure available here, we have accepted this venue. pressed his concern about the poor visitor turnout and response and said that there are too many shows happening in a year. “Unlike Drupa and Ipex which come once in four years and the exhibitors have lot of window to showcase new products and technologies, in India we have at least two national shows apart from two important regional shows and many more happening every year. In such an overcrowded calendar space the exhibitors have hardly anything new to show to the visitors resulting in poor visitor turnouts,” he states. He says there is just a little development in India on technological front. Not many new products have come up on the last few years. “In India, manufacturers are seen entering into either a joint venture or collaboration to go to the next level. If we have some indigenous development, it is ending up as just marginal and incremental. At Autoprint we are doing our best and I would say in the last few years we have seen some good products and time has come for us to excel that. That needs time,” he explains.
When asked whether the shows of such importance can as well be held in some happening Tier II city, he says, “Of course this can happen, provided the new venue has good infrastructure for both the exhibitors and the visitors.”
SLKCG presents solutions by Fuchu Shiko, Japan S.L.Kulkarni Cyril Graphics represented Fuchu Shiko Co. Ltd. Japan at the recent PAMEX 2013. “In India we installed the first machine in 2006 and as on date we have five installations,” says Ricky Chan, Project Manager, Fuchu Shiko. “We know that India is also a price sensitive market and look for a strong after service support. We will come out with an India specific strategy to grow our business here in cooperation with our partners SLKCG with whom we have been associated with since May this year,” he adds. Fuchu Shiko was formed in 1960 and started as a box manufacturer. In due course it decided to develop a high quality box
manufacturing machine. “We developed our machines from the grass root level. We have over 90% market share of box manufacturing machines in Japan as of today. In 2003 we sold some machines to China and since we saw a huge market for these machines over there, we established an assembly plant in Shanghai in China in 2005 in order to keep our cost down. Our present market share in China is about 30%. We are not just selling machines but we are also selling our solutions for packaging. Applications can be as varied as a show box to a jewellery case. Over the years quite a few box manufacturing machine manufacturers in China have copied our design and are producing similar looking machines. But those machines are nowhere near in quality – both in build and of final manufactured products,” briefs Ricky. “We have constantly been educating customers to save them from possible loss of money and business by falling prey these low quality products,” adds Vinayak Munipally – S.L.Kulkarni Cyril Graphics – also present at the show floor.
The right and the best input materials for use with Heidelberg equipments The key focus of Heidelberg at PAMEX 2013 remained on Consumables and Service. “When a customer,” says Hari Babu, Business Head, Customer Service, Heidelberg India, “uses our equipments he profits. But in the process of using our equipments two aspects are more important. First usage of right material inputs and the second aspect is effective use of the equipment. Over a period of time we found that while most of our customers are proud to own Heidelberg equipments they were not using the right input material while printing.”
Autoprint showcased their single-colour Non-Woven Bags Printing Machine. “With more and more focus on eco friendliness we see a lot of scope for this reliable non woven printing machine. The reason why I emphasize on reliability is because, our machine can print on paper as well as non woven substrate. This will greatly benefit printers in non urban areas by giving them better returns on investment. We are also showcasing our Repetto which is now very popular internationally as well. Our other products like Autoprint Dion four colour press, VDP etc are also showcased here,” he says.

He says that at the Print Media Academy, Heidelberg collected different best input materials like substrates, blankets, fountain solutions, powder etc. available across the globe and used it in their presses. “The paper we used was only one best brand available in India. Applying different combinations of the input materials we printed several samples of test forms. We then measured these test samples and found which combination of input materials is most suitable for each type of printed output application,” he continues. Conveying the findings was not feasible since it would have amounted to promoting particular brands of input materials, so they identified major printed output applications, and best combination of input materials suited for each of these applications. “We interacted with the manufacturers of these
input materials and based on our inputs and specifications, we developed input materials to be sold under the Heidelberg brand,” reveals Hari Babu. This way Heidelberg is not just selling its equipments, but also the knowledge and experience of using the right and best input materials with these equipments. “We are also able to identify the problems faced by different printers and offer them the right solutions,” adds Hari Babu. Hari Babu emphasises that for profitability, press availability and proper and effective utilization of the right equipment is a must. For achieving this proper maintenance of the equipment is of primary importance. They conducted an Over All Equipment Efficiency Program (OEE) for their customers. “The earlier concept of after sales service just meant
He further informs that they have developed solutions for Heidelberg equipments, non Heidelberg equipments sourced by the customers themselves and equipments supplied by them directly. They have training programs for each of these areas in a printing business. Their Business Consultancy Services can study a customer’s working from a financial point of view and suggest ways and means of reducing costs, improve efficiency and increase profitability. Overhauling and refurbishing, reinstallation and relocation are various issues handled by them. They offer solutions both onsite at the customer’s place and at their service centre in Chennai, depending on the type of program customers need. “Our focus in this show is to convey to our customers and prospective customers how they can improve their efficiency, quality and profitability. The response to our various programs is very encouraging,” he concludes.

QuadTech’s Digital Ink System for Ouest-France ensures ink stability and drives down start-up waste Ouest-France, the publisher of France’s most widely-read newspaper, has chosen QuadTech’s Digital Ink System to control ink volume and ensure stability of ink density on two new KBA offset presses at the company’s Rennes (Brittany) plant. The investment in the new 48-page, 1400mm-wide presses, capable of a maximum speed of 84,000 copies/hour and set to replace three Miller NOHAB 48 page presses from 1980, is part of an initiative by the newspaper to enhance productivity and efficiency. QuadTech’s Digital Ink System is a gearless, volumetric alternative to the open fountain system as a way of supplying ink to the keys. It features digital ink injectors that precisely control ink flow and set image density by metering the ink volume of each key. Digital volume metering eliminates the need for setting the fountain blade assembly and pickup roller. Removing the need for gap setting improves reliability, lowers maintenance costs, and produces a more consistent image density through the entire print run, avoiding the fluctuations characteristic of open fountains. Because nothing is touching the fountain ball, the costs of recalibrating and replacing worn ink keys and fountain balls are eliminated. Ouest-France has benefited from digital ink injection for several years. The company chose the QuadTech system, which is based on ink injection technology developed by CGI, acquired by QuadTech in 2012 and whose units are installed on existing presses at Rennes, Angers and Nantes. Mr. Émile Hédan, Industrial Director of OuestFrance, comments: “Installing QuadTech’s Digital Ink System for our new KBA presses was a natural choice because our people are
familiar and skilled with the system, enabling us to smoothly transition to the new printing press without the need to retrain staff.” He continues: “We are impressed by the ability of the Digital Ink System to inject the exact amount of ink required . This helps the press reach density targets very quickly as it accelerates, thus minimizing start-up waste. Furthermore, the system maintains ink stability throughout the printing run. This gives us reassurance of being able to achieve accurate color, with little need for manual press monitoring, even in situations of variable printing speeds.” In addition, the Digital Ink System provides improved cost control because the printer can calculate accurate consumption rates. Its enclosed construction also keeps clean ink protected from contamination. The Digital Ink System’s precision is achieved thanks to servo stepping motors-powered by an embedded microprocessor – which drive rotary pumps that in turn deliver ink to the rollers. The system is connected to the press speed so that as the press accelerates, the
pump keeps delivering ink at the required rate. The microprocessor makes changes almost instantly. Thus, a precise amount of ink is delivered to the ink zone, over a wide range of ink pressures and press speeds. While Ouest-France is taking delivery of the QuadTech systems on new presses, the Digital Ink System is also retrofittable onto existing presses. With 2.5 million daily readers (and a circulation of almost 800 000 units) across Brittany, Normandy and Pays-de-la-Loire regions in France, Ouest-France is the most widely-read French-language newspaper in the world. The Rennes plant publishes 53 localized editions in the week and 16 editions on Sundays.

KODAK Digital Print solutions power new non-profit book project One year after Sandy, the lethal hurricane that wreaked havoc on the mid-Atlantic, a new book is focused on raising awareness and funds for relief efforts. The book, titled The Rockaways, was conceived by The Concord Free Press and printed exclusively with KODAK Digital Technology. It combines visceral photos by renowned Magnum photographer Gilles Peress with the voices of residents of The Rockaways, one of the communities hit hardest by Sandy in 2012. The project involved dozens of writers, editors, designers, print professionals, and publicists who donated their time and talents to create The Rockaways. Kodak served as the technology partner for the book, leveraging its state-of-the-art digital printing technology to deliver a highquality final product on paper donated by NewPage Corporation. Blending output from the KODAK NEXPRESS SX3300 Digital Production Color Press with output from the KODAK PROSPER 5000XLi Press, the book showcases these two leading imaging technologies and the ability of KODAK Solutions to provide high quality and low cost for book publishers. “This was a very unique production
approach, using both electrophotographic and inkjet printing technology in one project,” explained Will Mansfield, Kodak’s Marketing Director for Inkjet Printing Solutions. “The publishing market is increasingly turning to short-run business models, and this book is a perfect example of the quality that can be achieved with our latest digital printing technology. With the right solutions, short runs can be cost effective, and publishers can mix and match the best solutions to achieve the desired results. Being part of this particular project was a very rewarding opportunity to bring our technology to bear on an important issue.” Officially launched by The Concord Free Press recently at an event in New York City, The Rockaways will be available at no charge through independent bookstores, museums, and on the Internet. Organizers ask that recipients donate to a Sandy-related aid organization, another charity, or someone in need, and then pass the book on to another reader so that he or she can donate as well. One of the important benefits of using digital printing for these books is the ability to sequentially number each individual copy so that readers can track donations via the Concord Free Press website.

London Science Museum’s first 3D Printing Exhibition features 150 Stratasys 3D printed minature models Stratasys, manufacturer of 3D printers and materials for personal use, prototyping and production, has announced that the London Science Museum is featuring 150 3D printed miniature models of visitors in its new exhibition, ‘3D: Printing the Future.’ Produced using a number of Stratasys FDM 3D printers, the small figurines are on display from October 9th 2013 to February 10th 2014. Featuring contributions from Stratasys UK distributor Laser Lines Ltd, the exhibition explores the process of 3D printing, from 3D scanning right through to the production of 3D models. The 150 statuettes were created from the scans of a selection of visitors who took part in the 3D scanning workshops run at the Museum by Digital Native Academy throughout August. The DNA team provided Laser Lines with the final 3D scan files required to 3D print the models, which range in height from 5 to 20cm. In total, the exhibition boasts 700 3D printed objects produced by a range of materials including nylon, titanium, sandstone, and many more. Pippa Hough, Content Developer, Science Museum said, “3D printing is a hot topic right now and our exhibition aims to shine a light on the latest developments and discuss where the technology may take us in future. By displaying models of people in the exhibition, we aim to create a deeper engagement with our visitors. Those who were scanned can feel a physical connection
with the exhibition. I hope to see lots of visitors trying to spot themselves during the exhibition.” According to Hough, the exhibition aims to engage visitors in the latest issues from the world of science and technology through a program of exhibitions and holiday events. Jeryl Adcock, Marketing and Administration Manager at Laser Lines added: “We are extremely proud to be supporting the Science Museum with this project. As the Museum asked us to produce a range of coloured models, including orange, green, red and blue, we recommended Stratasys ABS Plus 3D printing material. It comes in a range of colours, but most importantly we expect it to be able to withstand constant interaction with the public, while maintaining fine detail.”
Iconic Fashion Piece The Museum, which has around 3 million visitors a year, also features ‘Pneuma 2,’ a stunning 3D printed sculpture inspired by the human lung designed by the widely acclaimed Professor Neri Oxman. The intricate piece combines a number of different material properties, 3D printed with Stratasys’ unique PolyJet technology which enables designers to 3D print multiple materials simultaneously in a single model without post-assembly. The sculpture is one of 18 ‘beings’ featured
in Oxman’s collection and is inspired by Jorge Luis Borges’ Book, ‘Imaginary Beings,’ an encyclopaedia of imaginative zoology that contains descriptions of 120 mythical beasts from folklore and literature. Each ‘being’ in this series personifies a particular human function - breathing in the case of ‘Pneuma 2’. The 18 pieces were first exhibited at the world famous Centre Pompidou, as part of the ‘Multiversités Créatives’ exhibition, May August, 2012. “It is gratifying to see 3D printing featured so prominently by one of the world’s great science museums. Every day we are discovering exciting new applications for 3D printing, touching virtually every discipline and industry, from art and fashion to medicine, architecture and manufacturing,” concluded Arita Mattsoff, VP Marketing, Stratasys. “We hope that many visitors will take advantage of this opportunity to experience this amazing technology which is not yet leveraged to its full potential.” The exhibition is free to visitors and open to the public.

According to Mark Barfoot, Managing Director at Hyphen, employing both Stratasys FDM and PolyJet 3D printing technologies has enabled the product development team to focus on ensuring customers get the perfect design before the final mold is produced. “The main benefit for Hyphen is that when we go to market, the product is manufactured right the first time, ensuring our customers get something that has been optimised specifically for them. We’ve seen a real mindset change in our engineers. They are no longer willing to live with one prototype and hope it works, but instead are now iterating daily to ensure they get the optimum design.” With an in-house environmental testing facility, Hyphen puts its 3D printed prototypes through the paces including testing with extreme heat and vibration, enabling the identification of potential field failures or other issues early in the product development cycle. “The Stratasys FDM process creates functional prototypes that have high heat deflection temperatures and exceptional chemical and solvent resistance, which is essential for us, as some projectors need products that must withstand very high temperatures,” commented Barfoot. “The materials are an exact match of the final product, so whether we are doing vibration or drop-testing, EMI, or thermal, they will behave very similar to the final injection molded parts.” For more rubber-like materials, the company turned to Stratasys’ PolyJet-based Connex multi-material 3D printing technology, which enables Hyphen to combine rigid and flexible material properties.
“We are seeing more and more companies combining PolyJet and FDM 3D printed parts in the same products - enabling true functional realism during the design phase,” said Bruce Bradshaw, Director of Marketing, Stratasys. “By producing working prototypes that can be tested in extreme conditons, manufacturers can more easily evaluate product features and continue to make iterative changes until the optimal design is achieved.”
manufacturing process was critical to perfecting the design and functionality of this product,” says Barfoot. “Using the PolyJet system allowed us to trial the product using rubber overmolding and achieve a smooth surface finish, which gave us an accurate prototype to test with nurses early on in the process. With the FDM technology we were able to build functional parts, allowing us to conduct drop tests well before we got to tooling.”
For the medical sector, Hyphen used both FDM and PolyJet 3D printing technologies to develop a prototype for the VeinViewer® product, an innovative device that utilizes near-infrared light to detect subcutaneous blood and instantly projects a real-time image of the patient’s veins directly onto the surface of the skin. The VeinViewer imaging system is designed to help improve peripheral vascular access and is currently being used in facilities in over 40 countries around the world. “Having the ability to introduce both technologies into the additive

INGENIDOC enters Photo product market with KODAK NEXPRESS SX3300 INGENIDOC, a subsidiary of the Firopa Group, has broadened its product portfolio after investing in the KODAK NEXPRESS SX3300 Digital Production Color Press. The company has increased revenue by using the digital system to print a wide range of photo products, including photo-books, calendars and posters. Based in Saint-Etienne du Rouvray, France, INGENIDOC is a digital print centre employing 20 people, and generates a turnover of €2.7 million. Being involved in both data processing and printing meant entering the photo product market was a logical step for INGENIDOC. “Companies who produce photo books are typically
Press. “Kodak has been involved in imaging for over a century and it shows,” continues Bourienne. “The SX3300 delivers excellent photo printing quality and exceptional productivity. It has enabled us to create a wide variety of products, such as photobooks, calendars, posters, coasters, mouse mats and table mats.”
IT companies that subcontract to printing companies,” says Michel Bourienne, founder of Ingenidoc. “At INGENIDOC, we manage the IT elements as well as the printing side, so it made sense to create a new photo products department.” After comparing rival systems, INGENIDOC opted for the KODAK NEXPRESS SX3300

In addition to photo products, INGENIDOC also wanted to be able to offer its customers creative, high-end documents. “We decided to equip the NEXPRESS Press with KODAK NEXPRESS Fifth Imaging Unit Solutions, which allow us to produce creative, valueadding print,” explains Bourienne. “We can apply a matte or gloss coating, or use Dimensional Printing to add attentiongrabbing effects to images – for example, to replicate the look of leather, or the texture of fruit.” “Our investment in the KODAK Press
has allowed us to increase our turnover through the new photo products business, and by providing creative products to communications agencies.” The new KODAK NEXPRESS Press has also been equipped with the Long Sheet option that allows printers to expand their array of formats to produce even more applications including oversized brochures, panoramic posters, point of sale, calendars, dust covers or landscape photobooks,... Claude Desbrugères, Kodak Cluster Business Director, France Benelux comments: “Photo services is one of the fastest-growing markets in the commercial print sector. It’s great to see the KODAK NEXPRESS Press open up new sources of revenue for INGENIDOC by enabling the company to produce top-quality photo products and value-adding documents.”

Fosco’s first in EMEA to install Orange Ink Option on HP Scitex FB7600 industrial press HP has announced that Fosco Hayes & Hurdley Ltd (Fosco’s), of Birmingham, has become the first large format print service provider in Europe to install the recentlyannounced Orange Ink option for enhancing colour quality on one of its HP Scitex FB7600 Industrial Presses. The new Orange Ink gives a gamut volume increase of ten per cent with a PANTONE® Colour coverage increase of six per cent and an overall ability to achieve seven per cent more corporate colours. When printing for companies using orange in their corporate
or brand colours, this capability can be a powerful differentiator. “The flatbed converting market is fairly crowded, making competition for campaigns increasingly difficult,” said David Nicholas, managing director, Fosco, Hayes & Hurdley. “When we were shown print samples of the new orange ink, we were immediately impressed by the stunning impact it gave images and recognised this as a strong USP (Unique Selling Point) for us.” Launched in April, the HP Scitex FB7600
Color Pack can add two new colours (Orange and Light Black) to the six-colour set of HP Scitex FB7600 Industrial Presses and upgraded HP Scitex FB7500s. These additional colours can be installed together or added incrementally. “We use our two HP Scitex FB7600 presses to print mostly on EB flute, Corex and card,” explains Nicholas. “While the press can handle films and paper, we usually use our other printers to do that. However, sometimes, scheduling means that printing jobs have to be moved and it’s good to have the ability to move jobs easily.” Fosco’s has a large machine park of HP presses and printers. In addition to its two HP Scitex FB7600 Industrial Presses, it has two HP Scitex XL1500 Industrial Printers, an HP Scitex TJ8350 Industrial Press, an HP Latex 850 Printer, an HP Designjet Z6200 Printer and an HP Indigo press 5500. “This combination of equipment gives us the ability to undertake a wide range of jobs, attract customers as well as giving us production flexibility,” Nicholas continued. “The real drivers now are the FB7600 presses. The rise in demand for short-run rigid products and our ability to offer valueadded services like POP/POS design and retail-ready packaging attracts new work. We fully expect new Orange Ink and the print quality it delivers to enhance our position as a print service supplier.” While the HP Scitex FB76000 Industrial Presses are able to print runs of one, the core of Fosco’s work is in the 50 - 200 sheet range. “We’ve done runs up to 1000,” Nicholas said. “And, we never know what’s coming in the door: we could get an order at 13.00 today and it would have to be out by 17.00. “The new Orange Ink adds vibrancy to all the colours; we think it’s fantastic,” Nicholas concluded. “We are looking forward to going to customers and putting what we’ve done up to now next to what we can do with the new Orange Ink - they will be amazed!”
