Prinect Media Manager: solution for growth segment of media-neutral publishing services The Prinect Media Manager is a media publication system that can be used to publish the same information in various media channels via a central database.

The term multi-channel publishing services refers to the media-neutral processing of data and its distribution using various media channels, including print and online. These services are a growing market that opens up new business opportunities for print shops outside their conventional core markets. Last year, this led Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) to acquire an interest in Neo7even, a German software house based in Siegen that was already active in this market, and to integrate this company’s software into the Prinect print shop workflow. Heidelberg is now offering print shops this solution - a media publication system for publishing identical information in different media channels - under the name Prinect Media Manager. Media-neutral image, text, and video data is stored in a database and output for print and online media (websites, tablet shops, etc.) in an automated process. Any changes need to be made only once in the system. This ensures multi-channel publishing is efficient and cost-effective. “Anyone seeking long-term success in the highly competitive print media industry needs state-of-
the-art technologies and an eye for new business opportunities. The Prinect Media Manager opens up exactly such opportunities for print shops. This solution underlines our commitment to making rapid moves into new, promising areas of business through partnerships and cooperation agreements,” says Jason Oliver, who is in charge of digital business at Heidelberg. One of the first companies to use the Prinect Media Manager is BVD Druck+Verlag AG (BVD) in Liechtenstein. Founded in 1927, it specializes in high-quality advertising materials in short to medium runs. In recent years, BVD has focused increasingly on automated media publication to expand its future portfolio. It was initially unable to find a suitable solution on the market but recently installed the Prinect Media Manager from Heidelberg. A pilot project involving a BVD customer aims to produce a campaign brochure from a database using a largely automated process and to distribute this in various languages via print and online channels. The customer stores its data in the central database of the Prinect Media Manager. Both it and BVD can access this data, so that changes only need to be made once and are then automatically adopted in all layouts. Unlike in the past, BVD is now involved from the creation stage and can speed up brochure production significantly. “Here at BVD, we see promising business opportunities in multichannel publishing solutions and in combining print and online services. The Prinect Media Manager now makes it both technically feasible and cost-effective for us to tap into this potential,” says BVD Managing Director Peter Göppel.

Nutech Packagings expands with a seven colour Heidelberg At an interaction with the Press, Mr. Jatinder Shroff talked about his recent acquisition of a brand new Heidelberg Speedmaster CD 102 7-colourCombi Press (first of its kind carbon-neutral press) which gets to their newly constructed Gr.NOIDA unit. Nutech, from its very beginning, is an environmentally conscious company. It all started from developing a green working environment with trees being planted in available spaces, efforts towards water conservation and treatment of waste before it flows out of its factories. “Now that we are planning for a bigger unit, it was a chance for us to realise our dream to further enhance our environmental footprint and contribute a little in the direction of preserving nature,” says Jatinder Shroff. Jatinder went for a uniquely new configuration of Heidelberg machine for his new unit. He is an enthusiastic supporter of Heidelberg brand and pretty vocal about the quality of service and support by the German major. They have also recently acquired a fully loaded “Kohmann Window patching machine”, a complete “Perfecta Paper Cutting Line” & an “x-rite EasyTrax Colour Scanner with PressSign software” Besides investing in these machines, investments have already done/planned for – Automatic Corrugation Plant, Auto Litho Laminator, Auto Film Laminator, Hot & Cold Foil Equipment and UV Coater apart from a host of quality testing, lab and Colour Management equipment. The Speedmaster CD 102 is the all-rounder for a wide variety of applications and is among the top choices in the 70 × 100 format. It presents exceptional and stable print quality throughout the run and has straightforward and stable operation. Outstanding net productivity make the Speedmaster CD 102 a secure investment with a short payback period. Going for a 7-colour configuration is also not without reasons. Nutech has many customers with regular demand for combination printing. “The customers are regular with their demands for RGB+CMYK colours. We have those international customers who plan to change their entire packing products into 7-colours. They
16

plan the shift for uniqueness as well as to challenge counterfeits,” explains Jatinder. Nutech is looking into getting into more specialised and exclusive products. “The way to tackle present day competition is through niche markets. Alongside our regular applications, we shall be strongly focusing certain niche market segments. Presently, we are not into UV. It will obviously take a while before we go into full steam. I am sure the Heidelberg will help us in getting things right across the board with training and knowledge sharing etc.,” envisages Jatinder. “We are constructing a Packaging Unit which will be shelled in a ‘fully green’ building spread over 1.45 lakh sqr feet area with an option to further expand it to over 2 lakh sqr feet,” says Jatinder. He says the green building is being certified by internationally reputed firm LEEDS of UK. They have put in a lot of efforts into selecting material, developing designs and implementing ideas at the place in consultation with a Chicago based consultant. The plot on which the unit is being constructed is about 10,000 sqr feet. “We shall be gradually moving to the new unit and expect the transition to complete in mid 2015,” says Jatinder.
Things go pretty smoothly at Nutech which has got systems in place including an in-house MIS system developed over the years. The system keeps some of the burden off Jatinder’s shoulders as all the staff is well-trained in the system and things keep moving effortlessly. “We have a well set system and well trained staff that keeps the operations streamlined. We never feel the need for intensive supervision and I can afford sufficiently long time away from the operations without affecting the work at all,” beams Jatinder. Packaging is one of the most promising fields of the industry today. The matters of concern, according to Jatinder, are the competition and the rates in this field. He still feels that it is better when compared with the Commercial Printing. Also, investment in new technology and upgrading is the key here. Mr.Klaus Neilsen of Heidelberg puts across similar views, “It is very necessary for packaging printers to actually upgrade themselves in this competitive scenario to increase productivity and decrease wastage. And, by investing in Heidelberg CD 102 Nutech Packaging has taken a right step in the right direction.”

Glo Digital Press installs High Speed Polar N92 Cutter Coimbatore based Glo Digital Press, one of the top Digital Printing companies of the country improves production efficiencies and bottom line with the state-of-the-art JDF enabled Polar N 92 programmable Cutting Machine. Glo Colour Labs Pvt. Ltd.(Glo Digital Press), Coimbatore has recently installed a new Polar N 92 Cutting Machine. The company has transformed its cutting function from programmable Cutters to a high technology Polar Cutting Machine featuring seamless JDF connectivity with the press. “The press itself is behind the Cutting solution – since the Cutting is programmed, it is perfectly done,” comments Managing Director, T.S.Ramanan on the newly acquired capabilities. “Earlier we had programmable Cutters of other makes. They did not support JDF and the Cutting program had to be monitored on the Cutting machine itself. Whereas in the Polar N 92, every Cut is programmed in the pre-production, design stage itself,” adds an extremely pleased Ramanan.
“In present day market situation, Polar N 92 is the best Cutting machine that can deliver high perfection Cutting jobs and increase production.” – T.S.Ramanan, MD, Glo Digital Press.
Key Notes : > The new Polar N 92 transforms cutting function at Glo Digital Press. > High technology cutting with seamless JDF connectivity with the press. > Benefits of 100 percent cutting accuracy, elimination of wastage and increased production.

They decided in favour of Polar N 92 chiefly for its JDF support. While they looked for other options, it was just the Polar N 92 which perfectly suited their requirements. Giving details about his decision, Ramanan says, “Polar is known for high-end Cutting applications world over. Post Polar N 92 installation, we not only achieved perfection in Cutting but also attained 100 percent cutting accuracy. Elimination of wastage and increased production are the key benefits. Since no manual intervention is needed, we can reduce on manpower as well. Perfection means more satisfied customers and improved bottom line.”
Moreover, there is no other machine in the region with high technology JDF support. Therefore, their machine is winning high-end jobs for them from other printers as well. “In present day market situation, Polar N 92 is the best Cutting machine that can deliver high perfection Cutting jobs and increase production,” declares Ramanan.

“In a digital print environment where print production is very fast, we need to reduce manual intervention. Each job is to be classified in the pre-production design stage itself, so that after printing it will be easy for the finishing department. It is here the JDF supported Polar N 92 programmable Cutting Machine scores over others,” he explains. On the recent installation of Polar at Glo, Venkataraman (Asst. General Manager – Sales) of Heidelberg adds, “We are very much happy to be associated with Glo Digital Press. Polar N 92 is an extremely user-friendly equipment and we have installed many Polar cutters in Coimbatore. It is a preferred Postpress Solutions for Digital Printer too.”
Glo Digital Press – a one-stop shop for Photo and commercial printing, publishing and packaging Glo Digital Press is known as the pioneer of Digital Printing technology in the southern region. Today it is a successful Rs.35 crore turnover company running a chain of over 15 Photo Labs across southern India. Throughout the country, it’s a known
name among photography circles and is distinguished for its highly specialized Photo Albums. In 2007 they installed Coimbatore’s first HP Indigo 3050 7-colour Digital Press which they complemented by another similar HP Indigo in a short span of just six months of installing their first. “We are the largest Digital Press in the country. For any specialized printing, our customers come to us from all over the southern region and Coimbatore is centrally placed in South India to function as our main hub,” says Ramanan. Apart from the Photo segment, Glo is also into Commercial Printing, Publishing and Packaging. With its strong Online marketing, Glo expects to source more business from the northern region of the country in the days to come. Raman says that Chennai has installed at least five Digital Presses just in recent few previous months. The competition is stiff and Glo beats it with diversification and strong finishing capabilities led by their recent JDF equipped Polar N 92. Catering to the Commercial Printing segment, they also print special occasion photo books, coffee
table books, personalized gift products, special effects printing, greeting cards, photo calendars, user manuals and corporate collaterals – business cards, letter heads, invitations, ID cards and direct mailers etc. They are also into publishing of books, magazines, periodicals, annual reports etc. Today this segment contributes to Glo’s 40% business. Consequently, they have a fully equipped Finishing infrastructure that includes PUR Binder, Guillotines, Cutting Table, Cutter and Lamination machines etc. Glo has expanded its reach to Mumbai. Product deliveries are ensured through offices and four production units in major towns of Tamil Nadu. Around 200 direct and 40 indirect employees constitute Glo’s total staff at all the three branches. The company is opening its fourth branch in Salem. With a present turnover of Rs.35 crores, Ramanan aims a 40% growth for the coming year. Ramanan envisages Glo as a one stop shop for all printing needs in near future.

It has become the must-have product for anybody working with PDF files in the graphics arts industry, used by over 130,000 customers all over the world to detect, correct and edit problems within PDF files.” He goes on to note, “The value of this wide network of customers gives us a tremendous benefit. They are a great source of ideas and information on how we can make our technology even better. You can clearly see the input of our users in this latest release of PitStop technology. Their input, combined with our development efforts, makes PitStop 12 update 3 an important resource for our
customers and for anybody working with PDF files.”
New features and functionality included in PitStop Pro 12 update 3 are: OS X Yosemite Support Apple recently announced its OS X 10.10 Yosemite, and PitStop 12 update 3 is officially supporting this new version. This compatibility gives users the opportunity to take advantage of the features in this new operating system.
New Actions for Better Production PitStop 12 update 3 includes several new actions that better support the speed, accuracy and output of PDFs that are managed with PitStop. These actions include: •
•
•
Add Colour Bar - This new action lets users automatically generate a colour bar using the document colours of each individual page. While users can still control tint values, patch size and position, the automatic generation of the colour bar saves time and ensures greater colour accuracy in production. Match, Fill and Stroke Colours - This new action fills a request heard from many PitStop customers. It lets users change the stroke to match the fill – and vice versa - based on the selected objects. Flatten Annotations - This new action builds on a previous ‘Flatten form fields’
action that was released in an earlier version of PitStop 12. Because that action had no configurable options, users reported that some of these annotations were causing issues on output. This new action solves that problem by giving users the tools to flatten annotations so they become normal objects within the PDF.
Tools for Proportional Resizing This is another customer request that Enfocus is addressing in PitStop 12 update 3. It gives users a ‘lock’ in the Inspector that can be used for proportionally resizing objects or page boxes.
New Actions for Layer Functionality PitStop 12 update 3 also includes improved functionality for working with layers in PDF files. Users now have actions that enable them to select layers in various ways, giving them the ability to select, remove, check, and change layers and layer properties.
Enhancements to Existing Functionality PitStop 12 update 3 improves the user experience further with better colour mapping from Gray to CMYK, and support for rasterising content within PDF files via Action Lists.
New default Action Lists PitStop 12 update 3 also ships with many new pre-configured Action Lists that use the newly developed functionality. These new Action Lists helps users to get immediate benefit from the new features without having to create Action Lists of their own. The Action Lists can easily be modified by users to meet their own production requirements.
New functionality for PitStop Server 12 update 3. PitStop Server also benefits from the new Actions and Action Lists available in this new release. In addition, PitStop Server also includes an improved configurator for use with Enfocus Switch and PitStop2Switch.

Fynske Medier is a media business that satisfies the media needs of Denmark and, in doing so, aims to use all the media options at its disposal. In January 2015 the organisation will merge with Syddanske Medier and Jyske Medier as a result of which Fynske Medier will reach one third of the population in Denmark with its range of media products, consisting of radio, television, internet, magazines and newspapers. It will also become the third largest media group in Denmark. The group intends to make more efficient use of its resources and aims to save up to as much as €32 million euros. Fynske Medier will take on many of the group’s printing operations, which means that 40% more orders now have to be produced on the KBA Colora press. The organisation aims to achieve these savings without making any concessions to the quality of its products, the number of staff and the amount of waste. As far as the organisation is concerned, the most crucial aspect is reliability. Fynske Medier has found the solution to this in acquiring the fully automated systems from Q.I. Press Controls. This solution consists of the mRC-3D for colour, cutoff, fan-out and sidelay registration, the IDS-3D for dampening, ductor and colour control and the IQM for quality reporting. As such, the current IRS system will be given a major upgrade. Six IDS-3D
and twelve mRC-3D cameras will be fitted to the three full-colour towers on their KBA Colora printing press. Jesper Thomsen, technical manager at Fynske Medier, believes great things can be achieved with this revamped system: “Closed-loop colour control has been available on the market for years. We believe that the product has now reached a stage of development where we are able to get the best possible performance out of our presses. This includes such aspects as consistent printing quality, optimisation of our pre-set curves and minimisation of downtime. The product gives us more accuracy in quality control than even before.” The KBA Colora printing press is controlled by EAE software. For that reason the organisation has also bought EAE’s V.I.P. Statistic IQM link. This software provides a good example of the cooperation between EAE and Q.I. Press Controls. EAE’s software enables IQM data to be visualised in a clearly defined way, which means the strengths of the VIP Statistic programme and IQM can be combined. What’s more, this is the first KBA Colora printing press that Q.I. Press Controls has fitted with the closed-loop colour control. The collaboration with Fynske Medier started in 2004, when Q.I. Press Controls replaced a competitive register system with IRS. This worked to the satisfaction of the customer, which created a bond of
pressideas/ newspaper
trust between the two. Thomsen: “Over the years we have been extremely satisfied with the IRS system, so it was pretty obvious to come back to Q.I. Press Controls this time.” Together, Fynske Medier and Q.I. Press Controls have continued the development of its IQM, for example, with a real-time module. Erwin van Rossem, area sales manager of Q.I. Press Controls said of the partnership: “For the last ten years we have had a genuine partnership, with new technologies being developed which are now being sold worldwide. With the innovative IDS-3D technology we can take new steps in this partnership, which will lead to even more cost savings on the part of Fynske Medier. Thomsen is extremely positive about the collaboration with Q.I. Press Controls: “I’m convinced that the system is working as professionally as it has always done. The cooperation with Q.I. Press Controls has always been to our satisfaction. I have no reason to doubt the ‘quality’ of our relationship!”

Mechanical Newspaper Printing celebrates its 200th Birthday Friedrich Koenig’s invention changed the media world.
Possessed by the idea of using steam power to replace the backbreaking labour involved in printing with the hand press, trained printer and ingenious inventor Friedrich Koenig implemented a rotating cylinder into the printing process. This is why it is known today as rotary printing.
On 29 November 1814, 360 years after Gutenberg invented the hand press, a new steam-powered double-cylinder printing press from Friedrich Koenig and Andreas Bauer was used for the first time to print The Times in London. This year mechanical newspaper printing celebrates its 200th birthday. Possessed by the idea of using steam power to replace the back-breaking labour involved in printing with the hand press, trained printer and ingenious inventor Friedrich Koenig implemented a rotating cylinder into the printing process. This is why it is known today as rotary printing. Precision instrument-maker Andreas Bauer helped him build a fully functional press in England, which was then industrially advanced. With their cylinder press Friedrich Koenig and Andreas Bauer did not simply replace muscle power with machine power. They created the technical requirements for the distribution of printed media to less prosperous social classes and made an important contribution to establishing an informed society. Nearly three years later, on 9 August 1817, the two pioneers founded the world’s first printing press
factory Schnellpressenfabrik Koenig & Bauer in a secularised monastery in Oberzell, near Würzburg. Today Koenig & Bauer’s (KBA) main production facility can be found on the opposite side of the river Main. All other German press manufacturers originated, either directly or indirectly, from this Franconian cradle of press engineering, as qualified staff sought to go into business for themselves in the 19th century.
Key landmarks in over 500 years of printing history The double-cylinder press for The Times in 1814 was an important landmark in the 500-year plus history of printing. Its hourly output of 1,100 printed sheets compared to 240 by Gutenberg’s hand press increased productivity by almost five times. Printing and distributing thus became faster, more up-to-date and cost-effective. This ground-breaking invention by Friedrich Koenig to guide paper, and later also many other substrates as individual sheets or as a web from a roll, over a rotating cylinder and to print directly or indirectly (over a blanket cylinder in offset) using a mechanically inked printing form is still used in

manufacturers in Germany, England, Austria and the USA sprung up and drove technical advances in press engineering with their ideas.
The premiere in London which is now 200 years ago initially only concerned newspaper printing, however, books, magazines, catalogues and much more were printed mechanically shortly afterwards. The “Times press” printed paper sheets on just one side (straight printing). However, Friedrich Koenig applied to patent his perfecting press almost at the same time. The presses became increasingly more refined and more powerful, and print quality improved. In 1832 Friedrich Koenig documented his vision of a web rotary press. Nevertheless, the inventor was not able to implement it as he died in 1833. His partner Andreas Bauer and widow Fanny Koenig continued his life’s work. Other
Under the auspices of Friedrich Koenig Jr. Koenig & Bauer delivered the first web rotary press to Magdeburgische Zeitung in 1876. The conical former developed in the USA soon after paved the way for the arrival of folded newspapers and further improvements to performance. In 1888 Koenig & Bauer shipped the first four-colour web press to St. Petersburg. The very first special presses for printing luxury colour products followed at the beginning of the 1890s. Additionally, the company’s interest in banknote printing awakened, a field in which KBA has been a leading press supplier for more than 60 years.
A cutting-edge offset press for newspaper printing today
New ideas and courage are needed even today The list of Koenig & Bauer’s technical milestones since the invention of the cylinder press by both company founders 200 years ago is extremely long, but would somewhat overshadow the importance of the 29 November 1814. Over the last 80 years the printed newspaper as a channel for information and advertising has faced growing competition from the radio, television and more recently online and mobile media. However, it has retained its high level of acceptance and credibility with readers, as well as its superior lasting advertising impact. There are still opportunities for those with the courage and creativity shown by Friedrich Koenig and Andreas Bauer two centuries ago.
In 1901 Koenig & Bauer moved to a new site on the other side of the Main to where the company was founded in the Oberzell monastery

The rapid evolution of High-Speed Inkjet Printing Technology High Speed inkjet printing technology in the world is the highest point of new printing technology and is in the stage of rapid development. This technology represents the mainstream of an international development direction, promoted the development of digital printing to advanced stages. The global variable data printing (VDP) market opportunity has reached 656,756 million sheets in 2012 and is forecasted to be 853,097 million sheets in 2017, according to Smithers Pira report. Full digital output is forecast to almost double from 8.2% market share to 14.2% as per Pira’s report. High Speed Inkjet Printing applications market has shown rapid growth trend, but in the global high speed operation of the monochrome and colour inkjet printers. High Speed Inkjet Printing applications market is still in its early stages of development, pending further breakthroughs or stimulate to the market. The largest VDP output volumes are coming from mature markets such as North America and Western Europe, where digital print overall is showing strong growth especially inkjet and the trends in VDP is direct mail and other marketing documents are setting those for the rest of the world. There is also high growth in digital output coming from emerging Markets such as Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Latin America. In these regions overall digital production volumes (sheets) are much lower, but the growth within those markets in much rapid with as much as 20% annual growth in these regions. Without a doubt, the growth in the digital printing segment has come as a result of new technologies. Whether it is the ability to customize products or do short runs, digital printing has moved into new markets with each technology improvement, and as speeds and quality improve and cost per print decreases, inkjet will find new opportunities. There are so many advances taking place in inkjet printing that it is hard to keep track of them all. VINSAK LVPI is a remarkable solution for printing personalized security labels with fully variable information or frequently changing print. The ability to print high image quality on a wide variety of substrates is also a key technological breakthrough.
The unique design of this label printing and inspection system includes a quick make ready rotary scissor slitting unit with knife separation and lateral adjustment. With VIS1200, UV drying/ IR unit and inspection system installed on the VINSAK web transport system, it is possible to print personalized data digitally onto various offset papers, coated papers, gloss papers, PET, BOPP, etc. A colour touch screen HMI enables quick and easy job set-ups, control of the various counting facilities, automatic web advance, taper tension control and of roll features. It offers reliability, flexibility and high performance Low Cost of Operation Vs Print Quality with a variety of options in the Inkjet Printing Systems, UV Curing Systems and Inspection Systems. It’s extremely versatile equipment available in the market. The high speed inkjet market is thirsty for sustainable yet compatible ink solutions. On addition of LED UV curing capability for UV inkjet is a significant technological advance that VINSAK customers are taking advantage of. The improvement in head technology has pushed the demand for new chemistries and components upstream in the supply chain so advances in materials are being observed. The main improvement overlooked in inkjet printing technology is the reduced cost and better performance of the computing systems needed to drive digital equipment. VINSAK have installed more than 25 Print Modules in the Middle-East and India and some more installations are in the pipeline and tax stamp being the main application at the moment though new segments
are willing and there are some early technology adapters of this product. Adopting new technology does require a lot of investment but with this comes the print enhancement, personalisation as well as newer applications & solution that one can offer. With new solutions and enhancement to offer, convertors are in a better position to add more business as well as revenue to achieve faster ROIs; Brands gets more secure Anti-Counterfeit features. Since most of these applications are based on Variable data Printing, Inkjet scores here and this seems to be the future. In India most of these applications are getting addressed by Hi-Speed, High native resolution, grey scale heads. Most of the suppliers of this Inkjet equipment are of western origin or people integrating these systems use European designed assemblies. China has established it’s footprint in the Global signage printers market but is yet to enter the Label and packaging domain of the Inkjet Printing. New opportunities are being opened up by some of the printer manufacturers who have more open business models and this will allow customers to identify and then create new solutions that allow them to capitalize on those opportunities. The more printers will invest in inkjet technologies, the more opportunity everyone will see. These advances are opening up new opportunities and VINSAK expect they will continue to enable further progress in the future. “Higher speed, better quality and reliability all make an ROI much more attractive.”

Avery Dennison showcases innovations to drive converter growth at Labelexpo India 2014 Avery Dennison Label and Packaging Materials highlighted the innovations to expand business opportunities for converters at Labelexpo India 2014. “Our theme of ‘Inspiring Innovations. Sustainable Growth’ reflects our dedication to providing the best products for our customers and the environment,” said Anil Sharma, vice president and general manager, Avery Dennison Materials Group South Asia & Sub-Saharan Africa. “Labelexpo is a showcase event that we use to introduce products and services that expand the use of pressure-sensitive materials and help our customers grow their business,” he added. Avery Dennison showcased the latest innovations at Labelexpo India, including:
Point-of-Purchase (POP) Tyre Label This award-winning label features a film and adhesive construction with productionfriendly gum patterns designed to eliminate oozing and increase conversion speed. The POP label material incorporates a special back coating on the polypropylene film, which resists the migration of low molecularweight components and processing aides
from the tyre surface — a common problem in the industry. The barrier prevents materials from bleeding through the surface of the label, preventing label curl and maintaining outstanding print quality and brand appeal.
On-Demand Colour Inkjet Portfolio This comprehensive offering of label materials delivers greater flexibility and visual identification in variable information printing. Compared to conventional variable information printing, which can only produce monochromatic information and images, Avery Dennison inkjet label solutions enable coloured printing whilst reducing label obsolescence and inventory-carrying costs.
Food Reclosure and Reseal These innovative food packaging solutions incorporate Federal Drug Administration (FDA) approved adhesives. Ideally suited to less perishable ‘dry’ foods, reclose labels create a convenient reclosing mechanism that eliminates the need for existing in-home reclosure methods such as rubber bands, clips or separate storage boxes. Reseal labels keep perishable food fresh within its existing flexible packaging, providing an airtight solution that allows easy opening and
multiple package reseals.
Colour Changing Tamper-evident Labels This reliable security solution provides immediate detection of tampering in shipping boxes. The tamper-evident label changes colour once the box is slit and resealed. The innovative solution enables brand owners to protect both the short- and long-term value of their brands. These innovations and the others that Avery Dennison featured are designed to drive growth for label converters in new market segments and new product areas. “As competition expands, our innovations will deliver new business opportunities and a healthy bottom line for customers,” Sharma said. “We are committed to providing innovations that enhance efficiency and reduce environmental impact while also supporting growth. That’s what ‘Inspiring Innovations. Sustainable Growth’ is about.” Avery Dennison representatives were available to discuss the innovations at the Avery Dennison Booth.

Shilp Gravures – Pioneering Gravure and Flexo Quality in Asia Matching gravure quality with flexo using Esko’s Full HD Flexo solution. Ahmedabad based Shilp Gravures has recently installed Esko’s Full HD Flexo solution – a combination of inline UV2 technology on its CDI 4260 digital flexo imager and special screening. Full HD Flexo allows flexographic printing to compete with offset and gravure quality. As Shilp’s Marketing Director Mr. Gajanan Bhavsar says, “This was the only technology that gave us the best flat top and round top dots in the same flexographic plate, with results close to offset and gravure quality. We have been waiting for years to achieve gravure quality with flexo plates as it is a faster, more flexible and cost effective process. Finally Full HD Flexo gives us this breakthrough so it’s now possible to move the highest quality work from gravure to flexo which is what some of the leading brand owners want.” Shilp’s mastery and expansion in flexography parallels its mastery of gravure by continuous investment in leading edge technology. The Esko CDI 4260 installation with inline UV2 provides the Full HD Flexo solution with its combination of special micro screening for smooth vignettes, sparkling highlight detail, vibrant brand and spot colours and high solid densities. For most of its 25-year history, Shilp Gravures has been acknowledged as the leading Indian gravure cylinder trade house. In 2009, Shilp acquired a leading flexo trade shop –
an existing user of Esko prepress and digital imaging for flexographic plates. As narrow and wide web flexography grew in the country and even gravure printers added wide web central impression cylinder (CI) flexo presses for flexible packaging, Shilp was there with the best technology from its longtime partner. The company was amongst the earliest to invest in Esko software products such as Flexo Tools and HD Flexo imaging in 2012. By adopting innovations like Esko’s Full HD Flexo in-line UV2 on its CDI imager, and with its own comprehensive knowledge in flexible packaging, Shilp has been able to move flexo quality to the next level for leading packaging and label printers and converters.
Since 1997, when the first Esko system was installed at Shilp, it has been an exercise of constant growth, expansion and new technology and refinement for both the companies. As the flexible packaging industry grew in India, the global quality standards required by the consumer product companies had to be met and Shilp continued to exercise its leadership position in the industry by adding the latest technology in prepress and electronic engravers. In fact, the company became an exhibitor at drupa as a supplier and exporter of engraved cylinders. This latest development of cutting edge flexographic platemaking at Shilp is the natural outcome of a fruitful relationship of 18 years with Esko.

FINAT Thirty Fifth International Labelling Competition FINAT has announced that label converters can start selecting their best examples of label print as the 2015 FINAT Labelling Competition is now open and will accept entries till 5th March 2015. The annual FINAT competition showcases the best of self-adhesive label print. It recognizes and rewards achievement in terms of both end use/marketing impact and print and converting quality. Awards are given in the main segments where self-adhesive labels are used: alcoholic beverages, food, household, industrial, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, security labels, (self-) promotion, and booklet/coupon labels and for the major reel-fed print processes. “The objective of this annual labelling competition is threefold,” says Kurt Walker, FINAT president. “It not only helps highlight the advantages of self-adhesive labels and related products as effective marketing, promotional or identification tools, but definitely also encourages converters to extend their technical and quality boundaries. And last
but not least, it promotes labels and labelling techniques on a world-wide basis and this to the benefit of the label and associated industries. I therefore invite all label converters to participate in this prestigious competition and to take advantage of the benefits it has to offer.” Award winners will receive their prize on the occasion of the annual congress which will take place 11-13 June 2015 in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. The winning entries will be displayed at the congress and at Labelexpo Europe 2015. Selected winners of the FINAT Label Competition 2015 will be entered in the 2015 World Label Awards (WLA) Competition. FINAT has revamped the participation details and entry form and has introduced a new, fifth category under Group E: Digital. This group has been added to recognize the significant part that digital printing is playing in the modern label industry. Three categories have been included to cover the main digital printing technologies: solvent toner, dry toner
and ink jet. The category digital is complementary to other categories, which include marketing/end-uses, printing processes, nonadhesive applications and innovation.

Malhar Digicomm automates Sign and Display production with its Esko Kongsberg XN In just nine months, with the help of its Esko Kongsberg XN digital cutting and creasing table, Malhar Digicomm, a commercial digital printing firm has made a remarkable transformation from a manually operated facility to a fast-growing digital point-of-purchase (POP) and point-of-sale (POS) company. The company designs and manufactures display products for retail outlets. This includes freestanding displays, end-aisle displays, and shelf displays. It prints on diverse materials and even does custom molding as part of its displays. Malhar has invested in 100% digital production. The company’s recent and rapid success started with its investment in digital printers and the Kongsberg XN with i-Cut technology and Artioscad software for structural design for its 3D displays. Mr. Milind Deshpande, Managing Partner of Malhar Digicomm, says, “The company realized it could not be as successful as it wanted to be because the work was complicated and took too much time when done manually. Moreover, prior to installing the Kongsberg, we were sending our jobs outside and the finishing part, which is important for a POP or POS, was not as per our expectations. The POP business is growing fast, but you have to offer brand owners and retail customers a good solution, or you will not be able to keep them as customers. We understood that we could not work manually anymore.”

The most important thing Malhar Digicomm wanted from a table was one that would work quickly and provide a good quality cut. Also,
they needed a machine that was reliable enough to work continuously all day, if necessary. The Kongsberg XN is a high-speed cutting and creasing device with precise registration. Earlier, Malhar had several people working in the production area, now it has only two, while others work in skilled areas such as design, sales and marketing. In the meantime, production has tripled with fewer people and the factory is much cleaner with much less dust. The i-Cut software has also resulted in significant material savings. Mr. Deshpande adds, “With the Kongsberg XN digital cutting table, we are now able to cater to big brands such as Top Ramen, Being Human, Volkswagen and GM Electricals amongst others. Today, we cater to projects which are usually in the range of 1,000 to 5,000 pieces, but now we can work on much smaller or even larger quantities — depending on the job itself.”
