Heidelberg achieves net profit after taxes for first half of year Group sales almost the same as previous year at €1,054 million.

Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) made further progress in operational and strategic development in the first half of 2017/18 (April 1 to September 30, 2017). Thus profitability improved significantly, resulting in a half-year net profit after taxes of €+0.3 million for the first time since financial year 2007/08. In the second quarter, the company made further progress in its future-oriented strategic issues such as technology leadership, digital transformation, and operational excellence. This was achieved through, among other things, market successes with innovative digital presses, establishing new business models, and enhancing efficiency by adapting leadership structures.

Heidelberg with positive half-year result for the first time in ten years, success in strategic development – high demand for digital presses, establishment of new business models, and kickoff of a transformation program to drive operational excellence.

“The process of converting our company into a stateof-the-art digital technology group is progressing well,” says Rainer Hundsdörfer, CEO of Heidelberg, and continues: “With the launch of new subscription models for our customers and our portfolio of innovative products for the eMobility growth sector, we’re moving into new territory that offers enormous potential for growth. Heidelberg will be setting new standards when it comes to technologies of the future, digitization, and efficiency. The necessary cultural shift has only just begun.”

Growth potential thanks to new business models Demand for digitally printed packaging and labels continue unabated. Heidelberg is extremely well placed in this sector thanks to digital label presses from Gallus. This was underlined by the numerous orders for the new Gallus Labelfire at the Labelexpo trade show in Brussels at the end of September. Heidelberg is leading the way in developing the industrial digital printing market, and aims to build on this position. The period under review also saw shipment of the first industrial digital packaging printing press, Primefire. Further customer installations will be following shortly and customer interest is continuing to grow. Series production for these digital printing systems is scheduled to start at the beginning of 2018. The company is already fully booked in this area for two years. The IAA in September 2017 also showcased the diverse range of options for implementing customer-specific design requirements in automotive interiors by using the innovative digital printing technology from the Omnifire press series. 3D vehicle parts such as ventilation nozzles, dashboards, light alloy rims etc. can be individually

the Development center to Wiesloch and standardizing the machine platforms. Heidelberg is also adapting its leadership structures to the challenges of digitization by the end of the financial year. The aim is to achieve a leaner, more efficient, and more agile organization with fewer hierarchies and less complexity. A corresponding transformation project was launched by the management board in October and will play a key role in achieving the efficiency targets.

Heidelberg achieves significantly improved profitability after first half of the year

designed and finished to make them stand out from the crowd. In the second quarter, Heidelberg also began the pilot phase for launching new business models. This involves offering customers a full package of machinery, services, consumables, and software in a subscription model. In the last few weeks, additional successful steps have been taken for new product offerings that are intended to generate around €50 million in additional sales over the next few years. Heidelberg Industry boasts substantial expertise in control and power electronics for industrial and eMobility applications. After establishing itself as a supplier over a number of years, the company is now marketing high-performance wallboxes and intelligent charging cables for electric vehicles under its own name. In conjunction with Berlin-based technology startup Big Rep, an innovative large-format 3D printing solution has also been developed that has been in series production since October.

Kickoff of a transformation program to drive operational excellence In the next few years, operational excellence measures are set to deliver cost savings of €50 million through increased efficiency. Good progress has been made with the improvement measures already announced relating to logistics, relocating

In operational terms, the figures for the first half of financial year 2017/18 were as planned. Despite negative exchange rate effects of €18 million and the systematic reduction of trading activities with remarketed equipment, sales after six months were €1,054 million, almost the same as the previous year’s level of €1,072 million. As expected, incoming orders in the postdrupa year of €1,234 million were below the previous year’s figure (H1 2016/17: €1,408 million). The order backlog was a solid €630 million compared to the €765 million at September 30, 2016, which was boosted by drupa. Profitability rose significantly on the previous year’s figures. EBITDA excluding restructuring result was up from €45 million to €60 million after two quarters, with the EBITDA margin reaching 8.2 percent in the second quarter, following 7.5 percent in the same period of the previous year. EBIT excluding restructuring result was €27 million (previous year: €11 million). The much lower financing costs led to the financial result improving from €-29 million to €-24 million. At €+0.3 million, the net result after taxes (after income taxes) was thus around €28 million up on the previous year’s figure (€–28 million). The free cash flow (€-32 million, previous year: €0 million) was influenced by the acquisitions and investments made in the first six months in connection with constructing the new development center in Wiesloch. The improvements at operating level, the conversion of a convertible bond in July 2017, and a higher pension discount rate than in the same period of the previous year led to an increase in shareholders’ equity to €381 million (previous year: €126

million). The equity ratio thus rose to 17.5 percent (previous year: 5.9 percent). The net financial debt at September 30, 2017 was €259 million (previous year: €276 million) and the leverage was significantly lower than the unchanged target value of 2 at 1.3. “Heidelberg is on a very sound financial footing, with financing secured for the long term. This will enable us to independently fund the strategic measures and the growth we are aiming for,” said Dirk Kaliebe, CFO at Heidelberg, commenting on developments. “Systematically harnessing the potential from the efficiency program will also secure our medium-term profitability targets.”

Exchange rate effects and reluctance to invest on the U.S. market – sights still set on 2017/18 targets As announced at the Annual Press Conference on June 8, 2017, the upturn in business that is typical of the second half of the year and the acquisitions that have already been completed are set to result in sales in financial year 2017/18 reaching the same level as the previous year. However, negative exchange rate effects in Asia in particular, the systematic reduction of trading activities with remarketed equipment, and the noticeable reluctance to invest on the North American market could have a dampening effect on order and sales volumes later in the financial year. After weighing up the opportunities and risks, Heidelberg still has its sights set on the targets for financial year 2017/18 as a whole. In financial year 2017/18, the company aims to achieve an EBITDA margin in the region of 7 to 7.5 percent through efficiency improvement measures. Compared to the previous year and factoring in a further improvement in the financial result, net profit after taxes is set to show a moderate increase. As already announced, the strategic focus in the second half of the financial year will continue to be on initiating and implementing the strategic measures that form part of “Heidelberg goes digital” – strengthening the company’s technology leadership, rapid digital transformation, and achieving operational excellence. Although these activities will not have a noticeable impact on operations in financial year 2017/18, they will play an important role in helping achieve the company’s medium-term targets.

Xitron begins shipping Raster Blaster Pro Pairs release with innovative Xitron Network Interface – eliminates PC. Xitron has begun shipping the next generation of TIFF Catcher software – Raster Blaster Pro. Browser-based and accessible from any platform, Raster Blaster Pro was designed for CTP owners looking for more than “catch & release” functionality in plate production. “After extensively researching our Raster Blaster user base of over 5,000 customers, we were able to determine a feature set that will have impact on over 70 percent of them,” said Jeffrey Piestrak, Xitron Product Manager. “In the process, I believe we’ve developed the first intelligent TIFF Catcher.” Because it is browser-based, Raster Blaster Pro is accessible by any authorized user in the printing plant. “It doesn’t matter if they are on a Mac, a PC, a smartphone, a tablet, you name it,” Piestrak continued. “We’ve replaced the single access point that could facilitate production bottlenecks and made it simple to search, re-order, preview, release and re-plate jobs using a super intuitive GUI.” Coupled with the release of Raster Blaster Pro, Xitron has also introduced B3, the Xitron Network Interface. Xitron revolutionized CTP interface technology in 2007 with the development of the USB “Blue Box,” which eliminated the need for PCI slots in computer platforms. With B3, Xitron has taken the next

logical step and eliminated the need for a separate computer entirely. “What we’ve done is embedded the Raster Blaster Pro software directly into the interface hardware,” explained Piestrak. “The (slightly) bigger blue box now sits on the network near the CTP engine and users operate it through their own desktops or mobile devices. If they prefer, they can even attach a touchscreen to the interface and still enjoy full functionality.” Raster Blaster Pro and B3 are fully

compatible with every CTP engine previously supported by Xitron’s catalogue of USB interfaces, which includes output devices from Fujifilm, Screen, Agfa, Creo, Kodak, Heidelberg, and others. This means that current Raster Blaster users can take advantage of the increased functionality of Raster Blaster Pro through a simple upgrade process. Customers who still rely on PCI interfaces can migrate to a new package that includes B3 and Raster Blaster Pro. “Even used CTP equipment is expensive,” said Piestrak. “As long as we continue to develop platforms that extend their lives and make them open to use by any prepress workflow, we can continue to save money for our customers and improve their profit outlook.” Xitron develops advanced workflow systems and interfaces to drive the prepress industry’s new as well as legacy output devices. Its Navigator RIP, Raster Blaster TIFF Catcher, and Sierra Workflow are recognized as prepress standards. Built around the Harlequin RIP core technology from Global Graphics and the Adobe PDF Print Engine from Adobe Systems and FFEI, Xitron software for the graphic arts market, is driving hundreds of different models of imagesetters, proofers, platesetters, inkjet printers, high-speed inkjet presses and digital presses. Xitron RIPs are a pride of over 35,000 RIPs customers worldwide.

Malabar Graphics installs first-ever Heidelberg Speedmaster SX 74 in Kerala Malabar Graphics of Payyanur – North Kerala – installed the first-ever, brand new Heidelberg Speedmaster SX 74 in God’s own country. “Adding the Heidelberg Speedmaster SX 74 to our portfolio is a huge step in the right direction for us. The SX-74 opens up new dimensions in our addressable markets. We are also happy to be associating with Heidelberg, one of the most trusted brands in the business,” states Mr. Chandra Mohan, who owns Malabar Graphics. A super-efficient press, the Speedmaster SX-

74 combines the path-breaking technology of the Speedmaster XL class with the tried-andtested SM platform. Shorter make-ready and throughput times, and production speeds of up to 15,000 sheets per hour, render the SX 74 cost-effective for short-run jobs and frequent job changes. Heidelberg’s Intellistart feature is incorporated in the SX-74 to facilitate faster job changes and high level of automation. The next job can be prepared, while the current one is still running on the SX-74. Intellistart compares the current press status

with parameters for the new job to generate steps required to change jobs intelligently and dynamically, based on the comparison. Intellistart also provides schedulable setup times and constant time savings with each job change, by reducing 70% of the operating steps to be carried out on the control station by the press operator. “The SX-74 is integrated with Prinect Press Room Manager, the software that intelligently links available information to automatically deliver print jobs to production at the right time. The Prinect Press Room Manager promotes quick and reliable processing, and presetting of data to reduce paper wastage and setup times,” adds Ganesh Venkataraman – DGM sales, Heidelberg India. The in-built “Color Fast Solution” software in the Speedmaster SX 74 speeds up the inking unit’s response by 50 to 70 percent, leading to lesser wastage and higher productivity. “We are happy with the after-sales service and support from Heidelberg India. With the new SX-74, we are looking forward to exploring new revenue avenues, while strengthening our existing client base,” Mr. Chandra Mohan concludes on a positive note.

Heidelberg celebrates Primefire 106 world premiere The premiere was celebrated with packaging printers from all over Europe; first user Multi Packaging Solutions in Obersulm opens its doors for a joint open house with Heidelberg.

More than 70 customers experienced the world premiere of the Heidelberg Primefire 106 at the packaging printer Multi Packaging Solutions in Obersulm near Heilbronn at the beginning of November.

The close cooperation with Multi Packaging Solutions offered the best opportunity to present Heidelberg’s latest digital printing solution as a complete installation to major packaging printers from all over Europe and to discuss integration and application possibilities.

WestRock headquartered in Norcross, GA, in the US, is the first commercial user of Heidelberg’s new digital flagship, the Primefire 106 for the 70x100 cm format. Multi Packaging Solutions produces high-end packaging for consumer branded products in the premium and luxury market space, and the technical requirements for the machines they use are correspondingly high. These prerequisites offer Heidelberg the perfect platform to be able to extensively test and enhance the new machine in reallife operation.

“Our customers are extremely demanding,” emphasized Joint Managing Director Steffen Schnizer at the open house event. It is therefore important for us to use the most suitable machines for the specifications of the job. “For a long time, digital printing presses were not able to meet our customers’ high standards for quality and colour fidelity,” he said. “The Heidelberg Primefire 106 meets these requirements.” The extremely high density of 1200 dpi or more than 10 billion dots per printed sheet

provides a level of sharpness and brilliance previously unknown in digital printing. Manufacturers of packaging for high-ends products in particular appreciate this.

Extremely positive response The close cooperation with Multi Packaging Solutions offered the best opportunity to present Heidelberg’s latest digital printing solution as a complete installation to major packaging printers from all over Europe and to discuss integration and application possibilities. The customers exhibited an exceptionally high level of interest in the Primefire 106, with far more visitors than originally expected wanting to see the performance of the Primefire 106 for themselves. Steffen Schnizer was impressed by the keen interest shown by the attendees and spoke about a “great setting” in view of the large number of visitors.

Montserrat Peidro-Insa, Head of Business Area Digital at Heidelberg, presented the possibilities and innovative business models offered by the Primefire 106 to the customers at the open house at Multi Packaging Solutions.

Apart from the sharpness and brilliance, the visitors were above all impressed by the extremely short setup time during job changes and the fact that there was almost no start-up waste. This makes it economically viable to produce shorter run lengths right down to a minimum run length of one, and opens the door for personalization and customization for the first time on a B1 sheet. “Personalized products are very much on trend and there is strong consumer demand for them,” stressed Schnizer. Examples include customized names or messages on cosmetic packaging. Packaging printing is the strongest growing segment in the print media industry. Annual worldwide growth rates of three percent are expected in the coming five years, increasing to up to 20 percent for digital packaging printing, and Heidelberg is the industry leader in the area of packaging. The company not only offers its customers the widest range of products, but is also the clear market and technological leader in this area. There is strong global interest from print shops in the new Primefire 106, with correspondingly high demand. The second machine will be going to another customer in Southern Germany this year, while the third will be going to a customer abroad at the beginning of next year. Production at the Wiesloch-Walldorf site is already at capacity until mid-2019. Heidelberg is currently considering whether to expand capacity in order to meet the strong demand.

13th Cortina User Workshop Cortina users meet in Eindhoven for their annual exchange of experiences. This year’s meeting was already the 13th time that users of the Cortina waterless newspaper press had come together to gather information on technical developments, to share practical experiences and to elaborate joint strategies within the framework of an annual Cortina User Workshop. The event initiated by Koenig & Bauer is held at the location of a different user or supplier industry partner each year, with central organisation placed in the dependable hands of Peter Benz, project manager at KBA-Digital & Web Solutions and the driving force behind the workshop. The host for the 2017 meeting was APEX International, the world’s largest manufacturer of anilox and metering rollers with headquarters in Hapert near Eindhoven in the Netherlands. The almost 90 participants represented 34 different companies from 13 different countries. The two-day workshop was moderated, as always, by Peter Benz, who was pleased to be able introduce numerous participants who were attending for the first time, in particular the future Cortina users Paul Huybrechts and Pascal Coenen from Printing Partners Paal-Beringen N.V. in Belgium Marian Waterschoot, CEO of Apex International, and Thomas Potzkai, head of service and project management at

KBA-Digital & Web Solutions, opened the workshop with an official welcome to the participants. Subsequently, a joint presentation given by global marketing manager Jeanine Graat and global offset manager Joris Cabri on behalf of APEX International provided an overview of the company’s product portfolio and explained some of the special features and benefits of the technologies used in anilox roller manufacture. Further presentations addressed topics such as current retrofit packages and service modules, as well as future preventive measures planned by KBA-Digital & Web Solutions to support the waterless Cortina process. The agenda for the first day was rounded off with a short tour of the production facilities in Hapert, and later a guided coach tour around Eindhoven followed by dinner together at the distinctive Evoluon conference centre. The second day was also devoted to a series of technical presentations and experience reports from representatives of the supplier industry and users of Cortina presses. Paul Huybrechts, CEO of Coldset Printing Partners, spoke about the printroom of the future, changing market conditions, and how his company in Belgium is responding to

digital transformation. In November 2016, it was decided to further expand the Beringen location and then to close the Brussels plant by 2021. The project “Printroom of the future” was born. To realise this vision, an existing Commander press line is to be expanded over the course of the next two years through the integration of a Cortina comprising four towers, two folders, a coater and facilities for variable web widths. Patrick Danninger from the Rheinpfalz Print Centre in Oggersheim, near Ludwigshafen, presented the results of a survey conducted among Cortina users. On the basis of the feedback received, he evaluated user satisfaction in various areas, for example consumables, the waterless process in general and press technology. Mitsunori Hayashi, general sales manager for Toray, introduced the new sales organisation of the TTCE Graphics Division in Prostějov in the Czech Republic and described how individual markets are served by the dealers marks-3zet, Wifac and Schneidler Grafiska, the latter specifically in Scandinavia. He also reported on the two new plate types Imprima WA and Imprima WB, which were launched successfully in the first quarter of 2017. Furthermore, he underlined that Toray would be working continuously to offer Cortina users maximum sustainability with regard to its products.

Michael Millea, consultant to the Heights Group, explained the different sectors in which Heights is active. The partners of the privately held family-run company include not only Toray, but also branch giants such as Kodak and Fuji, and even KBA-NotaSys in the field of special printing applications. Michael Millea presented some of the jointly developed products and drew attention to the main features of the TWP 1250 NEWS processor system. Yuval Dubois, president and CEO of Presstek Europe LLC, said that his company would be further strengthening its focus on the Cortina users in the future and had invested accordingly in both its sales organisation and technical support. Particular attention was to be paid to the provision of technical advice to customers. The new Zahara XP Newz plate is an eco-friendly plate which can be washed

with water alone. It is suitable for imaging on all platesetters which are compatible with waterless plates and operate in the IR-sensitive range around 830 nm (thermal plates).

“Mineral-oil-free inks” and the results of tests conducted in Freiburg together with ink manufacturer KMI (Kwang Myung Ink Co. Ltd.) and Wifac bv. These results were described as extremely positive.

Thomas Fuss, director for web offset product management (Europe) for the Huber group, gave a brief overview of the product portfolio and the reorientation of the group’s web offset activities in Europe. The Huber group is today committed to a simple basic formula for waterless printing inks, using reliable raw materials and geared to an optimised temperature stability. All basic components and specification limits have been defined in accordance with the experience gained and are thus reproducible.

The concluding highlight for the workshop participants was a thought-provoking presentation given by Reinhard Karger, corporate spokesman for the German Research Centre on Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) in Saarbrücken, entitled “Artificial intelligence – Dynamics for the economy, chances for humanity!”

Patrick Zürcher, managing director of Freiburger Druck, reviewed the project

The 14th Cortina User Workshop has been scheduled for 26th and 27th September 2018 and will be taking place in Munich, where the Huber group has already offered to host the event.

Amar Ujala Publications prepares for the future Multiple mRC-3D cameras automate production at Lucknow, Agra, Dehradun, Moradabad, Noida and Kanpur sites. One of India’s leading media concerns, Amar Ujala Publications, has been busy getting its printing plants ready for the future. The last year has seen Amar Ujala Publications investing in at least ten automation systems produced by Q.I. Press Controls (QIPCEAE). QIPC-EAE Performance Package destined for Saudi Arabia The systems help bring about increased production reliability and halving output of waste. Earlier this year, Saudi-based Al Madina Printing & Publishing Co. started using automation systems installed by Q.I. Press Controls - Engineering Automation Electronics (QIPC - EAE). Its printing plant – located in Jeddah – placed an order for a Performance Package with the Dutch specialist in measurement and control systems for the printing industry. Al Madina is thus able to take full advantage of QIPC’s takeover of EAE. The systems help bring about increased production reliability for Al Medina Printing & Publishing Co., as well as halving its output of waste.

installed at Al Madina Printing & Publishing Co are fully geared up to this. The Goss Universal 50 press has been fitted with 18 IDS-3D cameras for colour register. The cameras all come with optional Automatic Ink Mist Shields (AIMS) for automatic cleaning of the lenses. EAE was responsible for upgrading the existing controls on the press and section with modernisation of the EAE INFO system, EAE Baltic Star control consoles and an upgrade from PPC to CLC. As a result, outdated components have been replaced and long-term support guaranteed.

Effective collaboration Ready for the future With installation of the QIPC-EAE systems, the Saudi Arabian media company is clearly making an investment in the future. “There’s a possibility of them upgrading to closedloop colour control next,” explains Erwin van Rossem, head of sales at QIPC. This is fairly straightforward since the systems now

Press manufacturer Goss had a big part to play in the decision of Al Madina Printing & Publishing Co. to opt for QIPC-EAE. “It was the client’s special request to have them closely involved with the installation of the systems,” reports Erwin van Rossem. “A crucial aspect of this was for us to establish an effective collaboration with them - and not

just for this project: you have to bear in mind possible future orders from other clients.” Another key reason for the order was the fact that Al Madina Printing & Publishing Co. had been working with EAE systems from as far back as 2000. At the time, Goss also acted as the go-between. “The takeover of EAE by QIPC means that businesses can call on the services of a single company able to provide both automation systems and control software,” Erwin van Rossem adds. “Not only is implementation easier, it also means less training of personnel.”

For its St. Veit site, the Austrian printing giant furthermore signed a comprehensive service contract for 10 years with manroland web systems. With long-term service level agreements like the ones with Styria, the performance of the existing press can be secured for a long time. The manroland web systems service program is based on three pillars, which were in high demand at the trade fair: solutions, support and store. Prominent examples of the solution service orders include two PECOM-X retrofits with a controls replacement on GOSS presses at two US print houses. With this multi-brand web press service, manroland web systems proves its broadly diversified competence as a high-performance business partner for the complete industry.

Speed Xerox installs Xerox Versant 180 Chennai based Digital print solutions provider finds a single solution to its major challenges. Speed Xerox started providing complete printing solutions some 20 years ago. Pioneering in Porur area in the year 1996, they still hold the monopoly in their range of solutions in the region. Speed Xerox is headed by Mr. V Vaidhyanathan, who is ably assisted by his wife, V Malathy. Two designers and operators look after key activities – which are primarily related to Printing and Finishing. Catering to commercial walk-ins and press jobs, especially the student walk-in jobs, the Chennai’s Porur-based Printing establishment also has a few clients from the publishing market segment. Recently, Speed Xerox invested in the highly versatile Versant 180 from Xerox. Due to increased demand for complex Digital print projects and variable data printing jobs, their decision went in favour of Versant 180. “Since, speciality media are the new trends in the market,” says Vaidhyanathan, “we invested in this machine considering its capability to print on a wide range of media types.” We primarily considered the Xerox Versant 180 press because of it being a 10 bit machine and the technology behind it. We were also attracted by the job simplifying capabilities of the SIQA and paper profiling. One of the main reasons to invest in the new Xerox Versant 180 press was the print quality and the SIQA tool concept which facilitates proper registration and calibration. Also the

good FSMA combined with the presales and post-sales support we receive from Xerox, further helped us in our decision. Additionally, we really liked the concept of offsite support, which is a new concept in the Printing machine platform,” shares Vaidhyanathan. He believes his Versant 180 will boost their volume in terms of speed and quality. After installing the Xerox Versant 180, they are already able to serve corporate profiles and help other branding companies with their jobs. “Moreover, it simplifies the jobs by automating registration and colour management with SIQA tool,” he reiterates. Comparing the Versant’s capabilities with their earlier working, Vaidhyanathan recalls that their key challenge area was the colour management. However, now with the newly installed press, they have eased the process by fixing the proper fusing temperature. “We are very satisfied with our new mid production press as it provides us with a 10 bit platform and various utility applications such as Hot Folders And Virtual Folders, Fiery Go etc. which, in turn, helps us in easing our printing work,” says Vaidhyanathan. With the help of the consultation provided by Xerox, they are planning a few new marketing activities and Vaidhyanathan, with respect to ROI, expects a maximum of 10,000 prints from his existing 20,000 volume. With a plan to work towards ensuring that

they are updated with the latest technology, Speed Xerox also intends to expand and open new branches. Vaidhyanathan is quite positive about the future of Indian Digital printing industry and is very enthusiastic about their Xerox Versant 180 to tap the growth areas of the future. “Our new Xerox Versant 180 will help us tap into all the market; that’s the reason for purchasing the machine,” he says. Speed Xerox has two printing facilities equipped with state-of-the-art equipment – including 3 monochrome machines, one colour production, numerous finishing and cutting equipment. They have a total staff of 10. “We have a complete colour printing unit which is supported by monochrome machines. With complete finishing equipment, we are able to satisfy the needs of our customers, which certainly is our USP,” says Vaidhyanathan. Additionally, they have a good designing unit which, according to Vaidhyanathan, is the backbone of any printing organization. They have a 1500 sq.ft. premises housing their recent rewarding procurement – the Xerox Versant 180. They have four machine operators who do periodical updates – Xerox takes special care to conduct trainings and their analysts help Speed Xerox stay updated in the machine technology. For Vaidhyanathan, the cost of printing, periodical updates and technological advancements have been the major challenges of his business. But, now with the recent Xerox Versant 180 he seems to be content – having found a single solution to his major challenges.

Komori Corporation adds Apressia MB series blanking system Komori Corporation has added Apressia MB series blanking system to the Apressia series postpress brand, and sales of the Apressia MB110E will begin early next year. For the development of the Apressia MB series, Komori created a strategic partnership for blanking systems with Laserck Corporation and concluded an OEM agreement. The postpress products in the Apressia series brand of printingrelated equipment will thereby be further strengthened. The Apressia MB series are machines that separate the product part and the nonproduct part (scrap) following die cutting. By having the machine perform the many tearing off (blanking) processes needed in manual work, blanking of up to about 200 sheets at a time in one job is possible. By this, laboursaving in the tearing off process, a repeated operation that nevertheless requires skill, can be achieved, and a production plan can be easily set up by stabilizing production. Using an Apressia MB machine in the production of paper packages also improves packaging hygiene since there is no direct touching of

the product by human hands. The package production plant can be kept clean at all times because the recovery of non-product parts is automated by machinery. In addition, the Apressia MB is compatible with the Komori KP-Connect Solution Cloud and enables production control and greater efficiency throughout the entire production process. The series includes Apressia MB110E, Apressia MB110M, and Apressia MB110H. The semi and automatic models have manual and automatic loading and discharge as per model. Speed range is from 6000 to 15,700 sph for different models. Changeover time is 10 minutes for each.

DYNASTAR by W&H wins ERA Packaging Gravure Award 2017 DYNASTAR wins for new ideas and concepts to produce short-job runs with increased profitability on rotogravure presses. On November 07th the new gravure printing press DYNASTAR by W&H was awarded with the “Packaging Gravure Award 2017” by the European Rotogravure Association (ERA) in the category “Innovation”. The ERA Award is given out every two years to recommend high quality and achievements in the rotogravure print market. The announcement took place during the Packaging & Decorative Conference in Barcelona. The jury especially praised the DYNASTAR for new ideas and concepts to produce short-job runs with increased profitability on rotogravure presses. The new gravure machine DYNASTAR was introduced by W&H at drupa 2016. The idea for it was born out of today’s general packaging situation that is characterized by more diversification, shorter time-tomarket needs as well as shorter printing jobs and accelerated production processes. In addition printers are faced with highest quality requirements, price pressure and environmental restrictions. On the other hand, the advantage of gravure printing is well known as a reliable and stable process, well established in the value chain of

brands and distributors products with the best printing quality. In the past, however, the gravure printing process was seen as mainly profitable with long-runs, while at the same time shorter runs have been gaining importance. As an answer to these challenges in the market the new gravure printing press DYNASTAR was developed specially for high profitability with short print runs of only a few thousand meters. The main advantages of the DYNASTAR are shortest job-change-over times, maximum production uptime, minimized substrate and ink waste during change-over and minimized space requirements.

The most important detail is the new slidein cart system DYNACART carrying print cylinder, inking roller, ink pan and ink supply, splash guards and the doctor blade device. This concept offers the possibility of making all preparations for the next print job beside the press while the machine is running. Even adjustments of the doctor blade system and the inking roller / ink pan can be pre-adjusted before sliding the DYNACARTs into the press. Change-over of DYNACARTs can be executed in only a few minutes generating a time reduction by 50% compared to conventional rotogravure presses.

InPrint 2017 highlighted Xaar’s achievements in expanding into a wider range of print applications and its work towards the “2020 goal” of £220m in annual global sales by that year. This is being driven by a focus on customer needs, as shown by its launch of seven new products over the last 18 months. Visitors to the Xaar stand saw samples of Xaar’s recently launched High Laydown (HL) Technology for producing a variety of attractive textured effects on labels, folding cartons and ceramic tiles, as well as industrial applications such as laminates. HL Technology is available in the Xaar 1003 and Xaar 2001+ printhead families. Also on show was the Roto-JET from EPS, Xaar’s business in the US, with two daily demonstrations. The Roto-JET, the latest advancement in cylindrical object inkjet printing, is a multi-colour, UV-LED, highresolution printer that offers state-of-theart digital printing technology, as well as excellent reliability delivered by Xaar 1003 printheads. Scodix makes E106 commercially available Scodix starts commercial roll-out of Scodix E106 digital enhancement press. Scodix has announced that the Scodix E106 press will be commercially available from December 2017. The next units are planned to be installed in the EU and USA during Q1 2018. Prospective customers can see the landmark B1 digital enhancement press running live ‘in situ’ at an Open House from 4-6 December 2017 at Gundlach Packaging Group’s facility in Oerlinghausen, Germany. Scodix will welcome Alvise Cavalari, Corporate Technology Packaging at Nestlé, to the event to talk about the importance of packaging, how supply chain’s needs are rapidly evolving, and how that, in turn, is driving change in how cartons are made. Gundlach Packaging Group was the first company in Europe to install the Scodix E106 Digital Enhancement Press for beta stage testing. Dr Uwe Schürmann, Gundlach

CEO and Managing Partner elaborates, “The packaging market is still in the early stages of digital technology adoption, digital enhancement in a B1 format is the frontier – consequently Scodix provides a true distinction from the competition. We are thrilled that we were the first company in Europe to test the Scodix E106 and we’re excited to show the world what the technology can do at the upcoming Open House.” The Scodix E106 made its debut at drupa 2016 and was developed specifically to deliver enhancement solutions for folding carton converters who need the 1060 x 760mm format. Multiple premium quality applications are all delivered on one platform, including Scodix Foil, Scodix Sense, Scodix Spot, Scodix Variable Data and Scodix Cast & Cure, all of which are exclusive to Scodix and provide clear benefits for folding carton converters to differentiate their offering and boost profit margins. Brand owners can create stunning products using foil over foil, adding Scodix Sense effects over foil, or personalising with Scodix Variable Data Sense or Scodix Variable

Data Foil – effects that were previously unachievable in this market. “We continually review new technologies from the digital sector,” comments Schürmann, “And when we first saw Scodix we could instantly see substantial opportunity for our business. Scodix provides the solution for the difficulties of short runs for versioning and personalisation, shorter and shorter timescales, and increased competition in a challenging economy.” Scodix CEO, Roy Porat, adds, “We are delighted to be progressing into the commercial phase, still working to the schedule we outlined in 2016. Printers and converters investing in the Scodix E106 will be able to clinch a competitive edge with value-added services that can truly energize brands. The B1 format brings all the advantages of digital enhancement currently being exploited in the commercial market and takes us a step closer a new standard in packaging enhancement.”

Fujifilm India launches new Uvistar Hybrid 320 super wide UV printer - a combination of speed, quality & reliability in a hybrid printer. Fujifilm India launched the new Uvistar Hybrid 320 at its state-of-the-art Demo Centre for Wide Format Inkjet Printers in Mumbai. Uvistar Hybrid 320 is an all-round UV production printer with the flexibility to produce many kinds of display print from superwide roll to multi-sheet rigid printing. Opening avenues of potential to broaden production capabilities in one investment, Uvistar Hybrid 320 is designed to provide printers with the very best in high quality, flexible and productive wide format inkjet technology. It is driven by patent Fujifilm technology and offers a great value-formoney solution to Indian customers. The new Uvistar Hybrid 320 is a 3.2m, combination flatbed and roll printer, capable of producing output at speeds of up to 201 square meters an hour. Utilizing Fujifilm’s Dimatix Q-Class printheads and Uvijet UV inks, the Uvistar Hybrid 320 prints full greyscale output, delivering a wide gamut of vibrant colours. The press is available in a nine-channel configuration with CMYK, Lc, Lm, Lk, Orange and White ink channels which boosts performance to achieve speeds of up to 201 square meters an hour. Commenting on the occasion, Mr. Yasunobu Nishiyama, Managing Director, Fujifilm India said, “With the launch of Uvistar Hybrid 320, we aim to strengthen our presence in the Indian Graphic Arts Market. The Graphics Arts business is one of the most important drivers for Fujifilm’s growth in the Indian market. With our world-class printing technology, we are focused on delivering high quality, technically advanced print solutions that help printers develop competitive advantage and grow their businesses.” “The Uvistar Hybrid 320 is more than just another great addition to our wide format line-up. Its launch is the next vital step in ensuring that Fujifilm’s complete portfolio of wide format products deliver the necessary solutions to all customers – regardless of their needs in terms of print size, turnaround time or run volume. Fujifilm is delivering on its objective to provide new solutions that feature the very latest inkjet technology to suit

every printer’s needs. The new Uvistar Hybrid 320 is the logical next step in this journey and it ensures that printers in the super wide market maintain access to the very latest technology in order to maximize quality and productivity, and grow their businesses,” added Mr. SM Ramprasad, EVP-Graphic Arts division, Fujifilm India. Several innovative technologies come together in the Uvistar Hybrid 320, providing a breakthrough in speed, quality and versatility that can be achieved from a hybrid machine, setting the Uvistar Hybrid 320 apart from the competition. The first innovation is the use of Fujifilm Dimatix Q-Class printheads and VersaDrop jetting technology. These heads enable the press to image in greyscale with droplet sizes ranging from 10–30 pl, which produce fine details at fast speeds. Taking full advantage of nine ink channels, the Uvistar Hybrid 320 produces image quality with the inclusion of orange ink which increases the colour gamut by 30 per cent. Another Uvistar Hybrid 320 innovation is its patented tri-lobal belt and six-zone intelligent vacuum system. This system delivers among the best media handling capabilities and ensures that all types of substrates track accurately in roll or flatbed mode. Additionally, a dancer bar with spreaders

keeps the most difficult roll media from wrinkling before it enters the print area. Rear pinch rollers engage as rigid material moves from the print area on to the exit tables. The Uvistar Hybrid 320 also has a ‘continuous board’ capability that increases productivity when feeding multiple sheets of the same stock during production. This feature offers time savings between sheets as the print carriage continues moving. No time is lost due to the carriage returning to its ‘park’ position, requiring the job to be started again. Fujifilm’s new Uvijet US high performance ink, with CMYK, Lc, Lm, Lk, Orange and White in the standard ink set altogether enable a wide colour gamut of the Uvistar Hybrid 320. Moreover, the lights and Orange expand the colour gamut to match challenging Pantone and corporate brand colours, while the highly opaque White provides excellent coverage, with the ink set delivering excellent adhesion to a broad range of substrates.

Broadcast Wear brings Smart Apparel Programmable T-shirt that changes with Smartphone App. can do this by simply raising either hand for preferred side. From safety point of view too, the jersey helps to prevent collision especially when due to low light conditions riders aren’t quite visible on road. Ayyappa Nagubandi, Mahalakshmi Nagubandi and Saumil Shah of Hyderabad founded Broadcast Wear, a company which launched, which is claimed the country’s first – programmable T-shirt. Ayyappa Nagubandi says, “We were tired with the boring options of shirts available for men. We wanted to create better fashion choices and so we started off with the idea of a digitally interactive T-shirt; one where you could put any message that you could type on your phone.” “Why do people need to wear an extra object when they can wear a T-shirt which looks like any other T-shirt, costs the same, but works like a tech accessory?” is the question which inspired the founding trio to start Broadcast Wear. Starting in February 2016 with touch-enabled T-shirts, the company has developed several products now on the same line under its brand name SYGNAL. Key features of Sygnal include: • Track Steps: The accompanying app tells the exact number of steps the wearer takes during a day while doing household chores, moving about in office or simply on a stroll. • Track Floors Climbed: The T-shirt app tells the wearer the number of floors he/ she has climbed throughout the day and helps him/her stay fit. • Track Calories: The T-shirt also allows to track exact number of calories burnt by the wearer of Sygnal’s fitness T-shirt. • Tack Distance: It tells the distance walked or run by the wearer. • Navigate: The wearer can put a desired location in Sygnal’s app and he can navigate effortlessly without looking at your navigation device’s screen. The T-shirt’s shoulder gives a slight vibration to guide in which direction to turn to reach nearer to the destination.

What’s more is that the T-shirt has waterproof electronics, is dry fit, comfortable, and even machine washable.

In addition to this, the app allows images, designs or slogans created by the user to be stored in the app’s library.

One of the products allows you to display the words or the design of your choice on the front of your T-shirt; with the option of changing it whenever the mood strikes.

A Bluetooth chip serves as the connection between the apparel and the app. The display panel has 8 rows and 32 columns which provides the user with a limit of 160 characters. The app presently supports English language, but may include other languages in coming months.

For a party lover, Sygnal has a T-shirt with an equaliser feature that allows him to display the music waves on the chest. “The phone listens to the music and music waves are displayed on the LED panel,” explains Nagubandi. Similarly, the cyclist’s jersy has LED sensors which light up near the back of the neck on the side that the wearer prefers to light. He

Available at the company’s website, Amazon, and a few niche e-commerce websites, the products have a price range of Rs 999 to Rs 3,500. The products have attracted customers from India as well as abroad. Currently, US is the biggest market for them.
