FROM THE EDITORS’ DESK Dear Readers, Better Human, a virtual brand in a real market environment, unites premium packaging with sustainability. A PrintCity Alliance introduction, its latest project, Better Human shows how premium packaging can be reconciled with the demands of environmental protection and sustainability. Launched at the 6th Packaging Inspiration Forum, Better Human is a fictitious brand that manufactures high-quality electronics using sustainable methods. All Better Human products are made from sustainable and recyclable components such as wood from sustainably managed forests (no tropical timber), corn starch and algae. To underscore the sustainability of its products, Better Human uses only fully recyclable packaging materials and resource-saving packaging designs. It markets to all age groups and genders and its customers typically are willing to pay a higher price for sustainable products. Being a “better human” therefore is a statement and the brand would likely have a good chance of being successful on the real market. Counterfeiting corrupts an economy by harming consumer rights, damaging brand equity, causing losses to industries and causing loss of government revenues. The menace of counterfeiting has caused a revenue loss of approximately INR 1 Trillion (14.7 Billion USD) to the Indian economy and curbing it could give a huge boost to the economy. Counterfeiting can effectively be curbed with widespread and proper implementation of authentication technologies, enforcement, awareness, and monitoring. Authentication Solutions Providers’ Association (ASPA) and Messe Frankfurt India are organizing the third edition of The Authentication Forum in Delhi. The Forum aims to empower India, Industry, and Indians in the Fight against Fakes. At the Authentication Forum, industry stalwarts, government departments officials, representatives of regulatory bodies, business leaders from various industries, representatives of national business associations, etc would come together to discuss effective and efficient strategies to fight counterfeiting in various industries. Printronix Auto ID has announces its Popular ODV-2D Barcode Printer/Verification Solution in India. The solution can not only verify but also validate barcodes as they are printed. For added accuracy, data printed on the label is validated to match the data sent from the host and the barcode image is verified based on ISO standards. This is the only integrated solution on the marketing that prints, verifies and validates barcodes. Zircon Technologies’ recent acquisition includes two 17” Performance Series P7E presses from Mark Andy and one DLI, two VLIs and two VSIs from Rotoflex. These endeavours aide the expansion of not only their facilities’ footprint in India as they prepare to open their fifth manufacturing site, but also Zircon’s presence in the global label market. The newest facility will be located in Dehradun. VINSAK has sold 1 Lombardi Invicta, 4 Lombardi Synchroline, 2 SPGPrint (CTP Pre – Press) and Iwasaki IF330 etc on the Labelexpo Europe floor. Kodak introduces SONORA Plate Savings Estimator Online tool allows printers to remove their guesswork to calculate their estimated savings before switching to SONORA Process Free Plates.
Investing in new technology is one of the most important decisions a business faces when considering how to improve their operations. For an increasing number of printers, switching to KODAK SONORA Process Free Plates is an investment that is having a positive impact, delivering greater operational efficiencies and a clear Return on Investment (ROI). To help printers who are considering changing their plates to process free, Kodak has developed the SONORA Plate Savings Estimator. This new online tool allows printers to calculate their estimated savings if they were to switch from a traditionally processed plate to KODAK SONORA Process Free Plates.
“More than four thousand printers around the world have made the switch to SONORA Process Free Plates. They are saving money, time and are reducing their impact on the environment.” Evandro Matteucci, VP, PSD, Eastman Kodak.
Key Notes : > Free up space by eliminating processing equipment. > Eliminate the variability from processing to improve consistency and quality. > Get plates to press faster, reduce downtime and provide a cleaner, safer working environment.

“More than four thousand printers around the world have made the switch to SONORA Process Free Plates. They are saving money, time and are reducing their impact on the environment,” said Evandro Matteucci, Vice President, Print Systems Division, Eastman Kodak. “We understand it might be costly for printers to change some of their business practices or swap out inefficient equipment. Switching plates is a quick and easy way to start saving money and to take a step toward becoming more sustainable. The Savings Estimator takes the guesswork out when making that decision.” Traditional plate processing uses water, energy, and chemicals to prepare plates for the press after imaging on the CTP device. The processing step also adds variability that impacts efficiency and costs in the pressroom. The SONORA Plate Savings Estimator provides a customized calculation of the savings a printer could see if they integrate SONORA Plates into their operations. Getting started is quick and easy – printers simply enter information about their current plate volumes, type of plate processing used, plate price, and the location of their business. The Savings Estimator will then instantly calculate the total estimated savings for several local currencies. In addition to using the Savings Estimator, printers
can also contact their local sales representative to request a comprehensive calculation based on the individual company’s specific processes, costs and equipment. Kodak’s SONORA X is a breakthrough process free plate technology which has enabled up to 80% of printers to switch to process free plates. This includes large printers as well as those printing challenging applications that need a high-performance plate. SONORA X Plates deliver three significant improvements over SONORA XP Plates, including longer run lengths, especially with UV applications, faster imaging speeds, and more robust handling capabilities. As the adoption of KODAK SONORA Process Free Plates has accelerated around the globe, Kodak expects nearly one out of three plates it sells to be process-free by the end of 2019.
The Print Show 2020 to take place over a weekend, attract new audiences The Print Show 2020 will take place from September 27th to 29th at the NEC in Birmingham, located across Halls 7 and 8.
“By moving the opening day to a Sunday, we’re opening up The Print Show to a whole new audience and becoming much more flexible. This is really important to us as we seek to evolve the show year on year.” - Chris Davies, Event Director, The Print Show
Key Notes : > It’s the first time that the event takes place partly over a weekend. > Organisers expect the dates would open up the show to visitors who cannot attend during the week. > Vivid Laminating Technologies is first company to book its stand for 2020.

October 2019
Organisers of The Print Show have revealed that the 2020 edition of the annual event will switch to a run of Sunday to Tuesday, taking place from September 27th to 29th in Halls 7 and 8 at the NEC in Birmingham. By making the switch, organisers say that the event will become more flexible for members of the industry who may not be able to get out of the office to visit on a weekday to attend. The dedicated print event will remain at the NEC in Birmingham, providing both exhibitors and visitors with a gathering point central to the whole of the UK.
“On the back of another busy show this year, we’ve had an incredible response from exhibitors, with plenty saying they are looking to book for the show next year,” Davies says.
Chris Davies, event director for The Print Show, explains that the decision to move the event was based on detailed feedback from visitors to previous shows. “We’ve had great success staging the show during the working week, but the fact is that some members of the industry aren’t able to visit as they are too busy in the office or workshop in the week,” Davies says.
Confirmation of the dates for 2020 comes on the back of a successful event this year, which featured a host of major names from across the global print spectrum. A total of 5,445 people were in attendance at the NEC from September 17th to 19th to find out about the latest in print and related technologies.
“By moving the opening day to a Sunday, we’re opening up The Print Show to a whole new audience and becoming much more flexible. This is really important to us as we seek to evolve the show year on year.” The move has seemingly proved a hit already, with finishing technology leader Vivid Laminating Technologies booking its stand for The Print Show 2020. Vivid is the first name on the floorplan for next year and is a familiar name to visitors, having exhibited at each edition of the show since its launch in 2015.
“From our initial conversations with exhibitors, the move to a Sunday to Tuesday event will suit all parties and offers something completely different to visitors. We look forward to revealing even more exciting changes to The Print Show in the coming weeks and months.”
Those in attendance were also treated to unforgettable Q&A sessions with three celebrity speakers in the form of Sir Ranulph Fiennes OBE, Chris Eubank and Gregg Wallace. The Print Show 2019 proved a big hit with exhibitors, with many coming forward to speak about their success over the three days. A key strength of The Print Show is that every year it directly attracts the leading print and finishing technology manufacturers from across the UK commercial print supply chain. These companies use the show to launch brand new products that can be seen for the very first time.

How to increase the efficiency of your press - a defective suction head can slow down the performance of the entire press. suction head reflects the highest level of development.
Low machine downtime
When it comes to wear and tear, the suction head and feeder are the most heavily stressed components in the machine. They contain many moving parts. High friction due to sheet transport, fast radial movement of the rollers and linear direction changes in the suction head can cause the affected parts to deteriorate faster than one might expect. The wear on a suction head is gradual and is therefore hardly noticed by the press operators. Ultimately, a defective suction head slows down the performance of the entire press. To counter this, Manroland has developed ServiceKit for wearing parts – it’s especially tailored to the situation of the feeder and the suction head. The package allows for replacements to the problem parts in these two vital areas.
mileage and corresponding stress, such as in cardboard processing. The advantages of a replacement suction head are obvious. Except for a few stationary parts, the suction head will be equipped with the latest parts. The new manroland

Furthermore, the customer can return the removed suction head to the manufacturer.
More press for less Manroland builds high quality, supremely reliable, sheetfed presses that are packed full of leading edge technology. The company’s after-sales support, via its network of over 40 own subsidiaries worldwide, is second to none. It would be of interest to customers that the cost of investment in Manroland sheetfed technology is now a lot less than they might think. Here’s why...
By replacing all wearing parts contained in the package, the assembly is renewed in such a way that your press functions as efficiently as a brand-new machine. The advantages are clearly visible: less sheet stoppers and higher speed, especially for sensitive substrates.
The suction head is usually replaced within a few hours. An increase of 1,000 s/h in the machine speed is not unusual after a suction head is replaced. Therefore, the investment pays for itself within a few production days. All ServiceKits are available for the whole ROLAND family including ROLAND 300, ROLAND 500, ROLAND 700 HiPRint, HS, DirectDrive, EVOLUTION, ROLAND 900, XXL presses
Manroland reputation for quality, reliability, technology and after-sales support, is well known. In the past this came at a price. Manroland presses were always known as a premium product at a premium price. its near 150 year history. Today it is not burdened with disproportionate overhead costs, or with crippling debt and the “fat cats”, with their lavish spending habits, are all gone. Today, like you, Manroland spends carefully and invests wisely.
Yet still they produce some of the highest quality, most technologically advanced sheetfed presses available in the world today, only now from a much reduced cost base. If you haven’t looked at Manroland Sheetfed recently, you could be pleasantly surprised by just how much more press for less Manroland offers. So why not contact Manroland Sheetfed today and find out.

The feedback from the speakers and the audience has been positive and encouraging. As we move on to our third edition, we look for more associations to add value to the festival in terms of workshops and master classes so that we will be able to contribute to the literary as well as
creative landscape of the state,” said Sabin Iqbal, festival director. Chandrasekhara Kambar, president of Kendra Sahiya Akademi, also addressed the audience. PRINT is vital for critical thinking The use of mobile devices and social media for accessing news articles continues to increase. However, new research reveals that – regardless of age – readers’ comprehension of long informational texts is better on paper. It is therefore vital that we ensure that press, magazines and educational books, will continue to be published in print in the future. While mobile devices and e-readers have had a surge in popularity, research published in 2019 proves that reading on paper still has its unique advantages. A group of scientists looked at the impact that digitisation has on reading practices by analysing 54 studies with more than 170,000 participants. They found that comprehension of longform informational text is stronger when reading on paper than reading on screens, particularly when the reader is under time pressure. Other studies show that despite the popularity and accessibility of digital products, paper continues to be the preferred reading method for consumers, especially for long texts. Reading on paper has proven advantages including helping readers with their cognitive ability, concentration and retention, and building vocabulary and memory. Living in a time of constant digital distraction, it is vital we preserve the proven benefits of print, especially when it comes to the content of newspapers and magazines that encourage in-depth reading. This form of reading is essential for European citizens to understand and form opinions of today’s
political, economic and social situation in the world. Intergraf therefore calls on policy makers to not only raise awareness of the benefits of printed over digital media for informational texts, but to ensure that policy does not actively favour digital products when the benefits of reading print are so clear. Policymakers should also pay close attention to the direct relevance of these findings to the democratic engagement of society. In-depth reading is essential to understand and form opinions about the current political and economic environment. If digital media continues to grow at the expense of print, Europe could suffer from a less informed, less engaged electorate. Immediate action is needed at all levels to ensure that content made available by newspapers and magazines continues to be published in print. It is everyone’s responsibility to promote printed magazines, newspapers and educational books which have been proven to facilitate comprehension and develop critical thinking. Intergraf and the Board of WAN-IFRA’s World Printers Forum call on the European Commission to: • Recognise the proven advantages of printed press, magazines and educational books for better understanding of the subject matter and thus enabling the development of critical thinking; • Refrain from a digital-only approach in the field of education and press; • Promote the use of printed materials
•
in schools and other education environments unless there is a proven learning advantage of digital; Support further independent research that measures the effects of digitisation on reading comprehension and critical thinking skills.
Intergraf represents 21 national printing federations in 20 countries. The printing industry in the 28 European countries comprises some 117,000 firms and employs around 637,000 people. “We are thrilled to once again partner with HP – a company committed to social impact and at the forefront of innovation in the classroom – to radically scale our efforts to ensure girls everywhere have the knowledge, skills and confidence to decide their own futures,” said Christina Lowery, CEO of Girl Rising. “We are devoted to this cause because it is a proven catalyst: giving girls access to education and opportunity is the most effective factor in transforming pressing global issues including health, poverty, and climate change.” HP believes that education is a fundamental human right that creates pathways to new opportunities. Today, more than 130 million girls around the world continue to lack access to education and women account for two thirds of the 750 million adults without basic literacy skills. HP will include
Girl Rising’s teacher training modules focused on youth empowerment and life skills in HP Education Edition PCs. Targeted toward primary and secondary schools, HP will also deploy a suite of curricula and a library of content to accompany the HP School Pack, a suite of software pre-loaded onto HP’s EHP Education Edition PC. “HP prides itself on bringing out the best of humanity through the power of technology,” said Michele Malejki, Global Head, Social Impact Programs, HP. “Girl Rising is doing groundbreaking work to empower women and girls around the world. This has never been more important, and our collaboration will equip millions of both students and teachers with the curriculum and technology they need to thrive.” With the goal to develop the next generation of female leaders, the HP Learning Initiative for Entrepreneurship (HP LIFE) – a free e-learning program from the HP Foundation created to support entrepreneurship and skills development – will provide additional curriculum in the three markets. Global education opportunities Building on the groundbreaking work of each organization and their previous collaborations - launching the Hindi language version of Girl Rising in India in 2015, celebrating every day gender equality champions around the world through the Girl Rising Creative Challenge in 2018, and the production and distribution of Brave Girl Rising earlier this year- HP and Girl Rising are now scaling efforts to improve learning outcomes and gender attitudes for both boys and girls.
HP continues to advance education opportunities for women and girls around the world. Last month during UN General Assembly, HP Inc. and UN Women signed an agreement to advance education, entrepreneurship and digital learning for women and girls in five priority countries: Senegal, South Africa, Nigeria, Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Morocco. HP’s partnership with UN Women through two UN Women initiatives – Second Chance Education and African Girls Can Code – possesses immense potential to both scale and address the lack of investment in women
and affording them access to opportunities for career work and economic growth. Both India and Nigeria have rapidly growing populations of young people with extreme numbers of children not in school - 41 percent of the population in Nigeria is under the age of 16, with 10.5 million out of school and India has the world’s largest population of 10-24 year-olds, 47 million of which will drop out of school by the 10th grade. The burden on education in both countries is overwhelming and new, innovative solutions are vital to advancing change.

Jet Press 750S awarded Fogra certification for contract proofing Accreditation makes Fujifilm’s third generation B2 inkjet press both the world’s fastest contract proofing device and the world’s only production press certified for contract proofing. Fujifilm’s third generation B2 inkjet press has been awarded Fogra certification for contract proofing, including FOGRA51 and FOGRA52 accreditation for premium coated and uncoated wood-free substrates respectively. This follows tests carried out at Fujifilm’s Advanced Print Technology Centre in Brussels, using Fujifilm’s own proprietary XMF ColorPath colour management software. The exhaustive testing process assessed and approved the Jet Press for: • PDF/X conformance • Proofing substrate colour, gloss and fluorescence • Colour accuracy [gamut] • Uniformity, permanence and light fastness • Fading [drift] • Long and short term repeatability • Rub resistance • Colorimetric tone value transfer • Tone value reproduction limits • Image register and resolving power • Margin information With tests carried out on coated and uncoated offset stocks, coated inkjet paper, canvas and synthetic paper, the Jet Press consistently met or exceeded the required standards. “We were very impressed with the consistency and quality of results produced by the Jet Press 750S,” says Yuan Li from the Fogra Research Institute for Media Technologies. “Only printing systems with the highest level of performance could pass tests like these.” Mark Stephenson, Digital Printing and Press Systems Product Manager, Fujifilm

Graphic Systems EMEA, says that Fujifilm is delighted, but not surprised, by the results. “For some time now,” he explains, “especially in the Japanese market, the Jet Press has enjoyed considerable success as a proofing device. It is a lot more than that of course – but we have seen it replacing the wet proofing process in Japan, in particular, as offset printers there have been quick to recognise its potential to create rapid and very high quality proofs for long run offset jobs. “The Fogra certification confirms the very high standard of colour consistency and accuracy the Jet Press can achieve and we’re delighted to see it get
this official stamp of approval. We believe this certification gives the Jet Press 750S a strong claim to be both the world’s fastest contract proofing device and the world’s only production press certified for contract proofing.” Backing up the colour accuracy claims of the Jet Press 750S still further, it has also been awarded Digital Press Certification and the ISO/PAS 15339 Master Elite Certification from the US-based graphic arts think tank Idealliance. No other four colour digital device (other than Fujifilm’s Jet Press 720S) has both of these accreditations.

Synergizing resources: The ALKC Print Sdn Bhd Albert Leong is a proud rigid box manufacturer who writes a business success story with partner, Koom Lim Cheong, business acumen and latest technology lead by Longxingsheng machine. Albert Leong was into die cutting business when he used to get lot of rigid boxes for die cutting on job work basis. Though rigid boxes as finished products used to fetch attractive price, Albert thought doing just die cutting wasn’t contributing as a sensible and acceptably rewarding business. He along with his friend Koom Lim Cheong, who is today a business partner, decided to dedicate a section of his factory to rigid box making. Starting with a cover pasting machine three years ago in 2016, they found opportunity in Moon Cake, a huge demand market.
Albert was able to get almost similar productivity in his previous all manual system of production. However, the automation has helped him with obvious advantages like speed, accuracy and consistency apart from keeping at bay the possibility of human error.

Moon Cakes are always in huge demand during the mid autumn festival which the Chinese celebrate with lots of flamboyance and fervor. And these Moon Cakes are generally packed in rigid boxes for gifting during the festivities. So the duo decided to try and make the boxes themselves rather than actually do the job work of just die cutting. Thus started the story of these two friends who decided to take a plunge together into making rigid boxes – and they made it big too. Albert, at a young age of 21 was already into free lance printing who would get the stationery material printed for corporate customers in Kuala Lumpur around the year 2004. He calls himself as a ‘mouse’
– one who would go to any place where ‘food’ is available – referring to his activity of getting the stationery jobs printed at the printers who offered him the best quality at the cheapest price. But then, he realised pretty quickly that it would not be possible to survive for long by being the ‘mouse’ that he was then he rightly decided to put up a production facility. “I felt a dire need of having an office where my customers can reach me to get their demands met and I too could serve them better from the office,” says Albert. He also identified that a formal place like own office was always a better place to negotiate business. He soon expanded to include die-cutting capabilities to his facility where printers would come and get their paper/boards die-cut to shape using a custom made die. “In fact the die cutting venture has taught me much about printing. Its amazing nuances really helped me to step on to the next stage of business in my life, that is, rigid boxes,” he declares. Without any formal training, learning on the job while practically doing it, committing mistakes, rectifying, doing it all over again are just few of the virtues of Albert – a self taught man with that determined Chinese resolve to pull him through and create success in business and life.

Meanwhile, Koo Lim Cheong, Albert’s Partner came from a family of printers who have been in this business since 1988. They had their printing setup in the same vicinity as ALKC Print Sdn Berhad in which Koo and Albert are partners. “Albert being in die cutting and I in printing makes a lot of sense for our collaboration to produce rigid boxes since all of our infrastructure, expertise, capabilities and finance synergise together to attain the intended goal of recovering our investment in the minimum possible time,” says Koo. In fact, Koo looks after the sales part of the Rigid Box business. He also looks after the printing of cover paper which is done at his press unless there are any size issues upon which they outsource to a common friend. Today, Albert and Kim have a Chinese Longxingsheng brand rigid box making machine - LS-450 plus Automatic Visual Positioning in their relatively small yet well organised workspace near Kuala Lumpur city. “We do about 5000 sets (top & bottom) of boxes in an eight hour shift in the present setup despite having space constraints for storage of finished boxes,” reveals Albert. Albert was able to get almost similar productivity in his previous all manual system of production. However, the automation has helped him with obvious advantages like speed, accuracy and consistency apart from keeping at bay the possibility of human error. “Either you increase workforce and involve yourself in nitty-gritty’s of production or invest in a machine that automates processes to work and give you productivity and quality. We chose to go for the latter,” he adds. ALKC Print Sdn Bhd. caters not only to the needs of direct customers but also to that of job workers who bring in the Cover and Boards for their boxes. “It is easier said than done to actually produce 5000 boxes a day and for that we are open to job work as well; after all we have to pay back the loans,” smiles Albert, who strongly believes that the ROI should not exceed two years. “Every trick in the trade should be implemented to recover the invested cost on machines within a couple of years or else it’s no point doing business at all, and we have been able to justify it as of now,” he emphasizes. It was interesting to see a Konica Minolta colour printer and a vinyl cutting machine too at ALKC Print Sdn Bhd. “We use it for sampling of rigid boxes for a faster
Longxingsheng: The semi-automatic post-press packaging equipment specialist
Dongguan Longxingsheng Machinery Co., Ltd. is located in the city called the ‘world manufacturing city’ - Dongguan City in Guangdong Province in the Peoples Republic of China. The company is owned by a young and dynamic Mr.Charming. It also has an independent R&D department which is led by a Tsinghua University professor. The company specialized in semi-automatic postpress packaging equipment for more than 10 years. Cardboard/MDF/Paper grooving machine series, box forming set series and rigid box making machine series are three main products lines that the company promotes. After having a dominant share in the Chinese market with installations in Hucai, Junsi, Yuto and other famous printing and packaging companies, today it has installations all across the world including RR Donnelley, Motivating Graphics, Pragati Offset, Star Print, Yuto, Tasin and many-many more. Quality consciousness is a hallmark of turnaround and also to show the customer a true-to-original type box and it has been a great add-on for us though both of these machines had other purposes, when we actually bought them,” reflects Albert. When asked as to what he thinks as the toughest part of the rigid box making process, he quickly says that the process of rigid box
Longxingsheng and they leave no stone unturned to achieve the best. The company has been an exhibitor for the last few years at Drupa too making forays into the European market as well. The management of the company has special focus to provide professional high quality products and satisfactory after-sale service to our customers all across the world Including Korea, Africa, Egypt, Middle East, India and many more. Talking to Industrial Print Magazine, Ms.Lyla Lu, The International Sales Manager of Longxingsheng said, “It has been an amazing journey for us with our machines producing Samsung phone boxes in Korea, gift/sweet/jewelry boxes in India, high value goods packaging in Middle East etc.” She also emphasized the fact that there is nothing like seeing a satisfied customer and she swears by the fact that most of her customers are - satisfied!

Talking about future plans, he is clear about not going in for a fully automatic machine. “The Malaysian market is not too huge and the fully automatic does not actually fit in, though I am highly impressed by the recently launched Longxinsheng fully automatic model. Instead, we need a machine which has very less turn-around and setting up time leading us to manage many jobs in a day. For that, another LS-450 plus would be an ideal machine for us,” Albert reasons. With the present machines from Longxinsheng, the proud and successful rigid box manufacturer, Albert is able to achieve not only the desirable quantity but also quality to meet the present and future demands of his customers.

Redefining the Possible: Beck, Glaroform and bfa at K 2019 At K 2019, booth partners Beck Automation AG, bfa solutions ltd, GLAROFORM AG present efficiency for the environment.
Booth partners Beck Automation, GLAROFORM and bfa solutions have taken the opportunity of K 2019 trade fair to present a production cell that, in many respects, redefines the limits of feasibility of injection moulding and decisively supports the quest for a “closed-loop” recycling economy.
With regard to the continuing discussion on the correct use of plastics, ICM has the potential to be a real and sustainable solution for reducing plastic consumption. The process is primarily characterised by the reduced material and energy consumption and offers the industry many more economic benefits.

October 2019
A 200 ml plastic container produced with a 4-cavity ICM (injection-compression moulding) configuration from GLAROFORM and Krauss Maffei High Performance (formerly Netstal) impresses with ground-breaking material efficiency. The unrivalled low wall thickness stretches physical limits, not only resulting in considerable material savings, but also leading to a further reduction of the already highly competitive production cycle time. The lower closing force and injection pressure required thanks to the new process reduces the forces acting on the machine. This extends the life of production plant, thus increasing sustainability while minimising energy consumption. With this machine, GLAROFORM clearly demonstrates its ability to innovate and is an expression of the company’s philosophy of delivering the highest precision together with a uniquely robust design. Beck Automation presents compact, highperformance IML automation for wrap-around labels. The system is characterised by the dynamic process, process stability and very high availability with short cycle times. The precise interaction of the individual components of the plant including automation systems, the injection moulding machine, the mould, label quality and the optical control system increases productivity while adding value. The use of lightweight materials on the main arm and the deployment of high-performance linear motors enable fast, dynamic movements. The main axle has two drive motors, which improves dynamics and extends the life of both the belts and the motors. Inclined label magazines, where the labels are contained with the print image facing down, minimise label warpage.
This guarantees an optimised, precise positioning of the labels. Even with very fast cycle times, the labels are separated and transferred to the cores without disruption. The removal, transfer as well as the depositing and stacking of the products all impress with captivating levels of automation. The modified logbook which has recently been integrated into the HMI control system, features user administration, parameter monitoring, simplified error analysis as well as a maintenance interval. In addition, the IML system is equipped with a 10-camera vision system from Intravis. This monitors the outside of the containers through 360° while at the same time inspecting the inside of the product. Furthermore, labels with a digital watermark from label supplier Verstraete are deployed. This new technology enables efficient sorting at recycling plants equipped to handle this technology. In addition, the digital watermarks which are invisible to the naked eye can also be used as codes, in the same way simple bar or QR codes are used today. MES PiSolutions by the company bfa solutions ltd provides the interface between the production and the ERP levels in this sophisticated and pioneering application. It has the task of collating and evaluating data from the injection moulding machine, the handling process and the quality assurance system and to make this data available to different users. The various functions of the MES help to make, among other things, downtime, defective products and production progress all visible in real time. This way, problems can be dealt with quickly or a tool change with a preheated tool can be prepared just-in-time. Thus the utilisation and efficiency of production plant and production lines can be significantly increased. This makes it possible to save even more energy, time and money, and further demonstrates the idea of plastic as an efficient and sustainable raw material. In the face of changing consumer demands, the

plastics industry today has the opportunity to create a win-win situation for the environment as well as its own stakeholders. The production plant shown here, with the significant reduction in wear and consumption in terms of materials, energy, work and the plant itself, while at the same time increasing output, stands for an even more efficient future. They presented the state-of-the-art of tomorrow’s technology at the K 2019 in Hall 12, Booth A51-03 (Swiss Pavilion). GLAROFORM AG , global supplier of high performance injection moulding tools for thin wall applications worldwide with specialisation in food and medical packaging etc. launched high-performance injectioncompression moulding (ICM) tools on the occasion of the K 2019. With regard to the continuing discussion on the correct use of plastics, ICM has the potential to be a real and sustainable solution for reducing plastic consumption. The process is primarily characterised by the reduced material and energy consumption and offers the industry many more economic benefits. Injection Compression Moulding (ICM)
•
Injection Compression Moulding (ICM) is a manufacturing process that combines injection and compression moulding. This is a dynamic injection process: compared to conventional injection moulding, the mould is not closed completely at the filling stage. As a result, the closing force is then used to distribute the injected material throughout the mould cavity.
• •
Today, ICM is particularly common in the production of technical parts such as DVDs or lenses. Here, the ICM process offers essential advantages in terms of dimensional accuracy and moulded surfaces. Conversely, the market for ICM systems in the field of thin-walled packaging is still in a state of development. The first early adopters are emerging, both on the supplier and the user side. These companies are mastering the challenges of this process and thus creating economic as well as ecological benefits for the environment, society and for themselves. The key benefits of Injection Compression Moulding of thin wall packaging are as follows:
Material savings of up to 25% Enhanced possibilities regarding raw materials Increased output by up to 5% Closing force requirements reduced by up to 40% Reduction in energy consumption by up to 20% Lower maintenance costs Reduction in production area by up to 15%
In Mould Labelling (IML) Since IML is a very dynamic process, operational efficiency is the sum of all the machine’s high quality components. First, the labels are sucked out of the label station. In the second step, the labels are placed on the cores and held in place by a vacuum. The cores move into the cavities to transfer the labels. In this phase, the labels are blown off against the vacuum, electrostatically charged and thus positioned in the mould, mapping the cavities as closely as possible and held in place. The level of process design and the quality of the labels are decisive for process reliability, reproducibility, part quality and cost-effectiveness. A high-quality automation system, which is equally convincing in terms of availability, process reliability, stability and longevity, is crucial for return on investment and the level of added value.

Better Human: A virtual brand in a real market environment - unites premium packaging with sustainability. The PrintCity Alliance introduces its latest project, Better Human, launched at the 6th Packaging Inspiration Forum. This new project shows how premium packaging can be reconciled with the demands of environmental protection and sustainability. Better Human is a fictitious brand that manufactures high-quality electronics using sustainable methods.
Sophisticated finishing techniques underline the lifestyle aspect of the products The sophisticated print finishing techniques draw on haptic and optical effects. The natural, luminous colours and the deliberate use of natural images and design elements give the packaging a striking and memorable look. Techniques include hot stamping and
coating technology, hybrid lacquer texture/ gloss effects and blind embossing. Also integrated in the design is a tamper-evident label. The folding cartons for the ear[th] buds and the paperboard blister pack for the ear[th]phones were produced at Model Kramp.
Materials – structural design – production: Numerous parameters contribute to sustainability Sustainability naturally begins with the choice of substrate and the structural design. The packaging is constructed without plastic so it can easily be recycled. Recyclability is a core issue that hinges on the different materials being easy to separate in an automated process, a factor that is also reflected in the new packaging regulations. But the project addresses other issues as well, such as reducing CO2 emissions, eco-friendly materials and efficient production processes. Better Human, the PrintCity Alliance’s new project, demonstrates how premium packaging can be reconciled with the demands of environmental protection and sustainability. It was unveiled at FachPack in Nuremberg at the 6th Packaging Inspiration Forum. Model Kramp GmbH in Hanau, Germany, uses state-of-the-art printing and print

Toray and Codimag collaboration brings productivity to Label Converters Waterless offset with the Codimag VIVA 420 press and Toray plates expands range of applications, competes favourably with flexography. For more than two decades, waterless offset printing pioneer Toray and narrow web press manufacturer Codimag have sustained a deep partnership that has helped extend the environmental, quality and productivity advantages of waterless offset printing to a growing number of narrow web applications, including labels, cardboard, film, in-mould labeling, shrink sleeves, security printing and more. At Labelexpo Europe 2019, the two companies displayed the latest results of this collaboration, providing label printers/ converters with proof that by migrating all or some of their production from flexography to waterless offset printing, they can substantially improve both quality and bottom line. “In 1999, when we decided to move from letterpress to offset to improve the quality of our printing and reduce tooling costs,” says Benoit Demol, Codimag CEO, “we believed that waterless offset was the best solution for our market for two reasons: 1) it has all the advantages of offset in terms of quality and range of substrates that can be used; and 2) it doesn’t have the inconvenience of offset around maintaining ink/water balance. We obviously needed to work with Toray when we made the change because they are the leading provider of waterless offset plates, and they have helped us a great deal to develop our presses, including waterless offset applications and settings such as temperature control.”
waterless offset plates are much less costly than flexo plates.” Demol points out that the new Toray IMPRIMA LJ waterless offset plates are not only chemistry-free for increased environmental sustainability, but they are much more durable as well. “This is essential” he says, “because when you are printing longer runs as we are with the VIVA 420, you need plates that are of higher durability. They are a perfect match for all aspects of the label market.” “Although we do have partnerships with other press manufacturers,” Mitsunori Hayashi, Director at Toray, explains, “Codimag supports us in the label market. We share the goal of being able to print high-value products in an eco-friendly way, and we believe that it creates new business opportunities and also draws volume from the less sustainable flexo process. It makes a great deal of sense to work together as we not only continue to grow the waterless offset label market in Europe, but also in China and South America.” Hayashi reports that even though the IMPRIMA LJ plates have only been on the market for a few months, the company is receiving high praise from customers for their
chemistry-free nature, and also for the higher resolution and more durability they offer. “In many cases, the customers are looking for more projects with shorter runs, but they are also demanding higher quality. Plus, environmental regulations around the world are becoming more stringent, creating even more opportunity for waterless offset and eco-friendly presses like the VIVA 420.” Both companies continue to work on more improvements and new solutions moving forward. “As we move toward drupa 2020,” Hayashi states, “our collaboration will be even tighter and more important.” Demol concludes, “drupa 2020 will be another good opportunity to collaborate again with Toray and educate label printers about why they should switch to waterless offset – for the same reasons why waterless offset was chosen in other markets including newspapers, plastic cards, and security applications: waterless offset can print on any substrate with very high quality and productivity, minimal waste and a significantly smaller environmental footprint. drupa 2020 will be an excellent venue to bring the latest developments and engage printers of all types by sharing with them the advantages and opportunities that waterless offset printing brings.”
Both Toray and Codimag are pleased with the advances that have been enabled by the Codimag VIVA 420 press with Aniflo and Toray’s new IMPRIMA LJ waterless offset plates. “The VIVA 420 is a new generation of narrow web press,” Demol adds. “We have increased the press speed to 85 meters per minute, which is the equivalent of a flexo press with inline die cutting, we have improved web guiding, and we have reduced waste and set-up time even more than previous presses due to the combination of Aniflo, which we introduced in 2007, and an improved web motion system. Now you can change over jobs in as little as five minutes with less than 30 meters of waste. In addition,
