Sakurai hosted a New Technology introduction show in Gifu for the first time in two and a half years. One of the leading manufacturers of Sheet and Webscreen printing presses, Sakurai continues to challenge the limits of screen printing technology applications. Under the theme, “New Ideas Spun by Screen Printing: a common sense approach”, the show highlighted two major areas of interest. In the Technology Area, visitors could see examples of how Sakurai’s silkscreen printing technology and one-pass, labour-saving presses are being used by customers in a wide range of industries. The other Application Area featured Sakurai’s newly launched prototyping and custom contract manufacturing business (SAP-CMS), which supports customer’s new product development efforts. Afterwards, there was an opportunity to discuss equipment and testing requirements with Sakurai’s experienced staff. The ‘By Invitation’ event exclusively targeted Sakurai’s valued domestic and international customers.

New Ideas Spun by Screen Printing: a common sense approach Sakurai custom solutions to customer’s Specifications. This means that Sakurai not only applies custom specifications to the printing press hardware, but also incorporates applications such as dryers, screens and inks into the overall line configuration to offer the best custom solutions to its customers. Sakurai presses have been used in industries with completely different needs, such as automotive, bio sensors, wearable devices, and security.

At the exhibition, visitors had the opportunity to talk directly with Sakurai engineers who have expertise in design, quality assurance, as well as technical consulting.

Sakurai’s New Technology Introduction Show goes to the next level! Following COVID, the way Sakurai interacts with customers has changed. In addition to the traditional manufacturing of printing presses, in 2020, it implemented a prototyping, contract manufacturing and consulting business, which has now evolved into a business which is highly valued by its customers. Sakurai continues to be a leading manufacturer that creates new products and markets together with its customers and shares in their success.

New functions specialized in labour saving technology Sakurai has addressed the challenges of modern manufacturing. For example it has updated the MS-

A new system has been reborn that automates plate position correction, which used to be done manually. And, it has simplified the operation of CCD camera alignment so that even novice operators can easily operate the machine. At this exhibition, Sakurai prepared contents so that customers could see the MS-80DDS in operation. In addition, it demonstrated the LQM foil stamping

Sakurai’s prototyping and contract manufacturing business, SAP-CMS can solve these problems. With Sakurai’s prototyping and contract manufacturing, no initial investment, utilization of its operators, an early mass production can be realized, taking advantage of Sakurai’s position as a leading equipment manufacturer. It not only has its printing presses, but also peripheral

DuPont Cyrel at Labelexpo India 2022 Cyrel Solutions India team will be at the company stand to facilitate the visitors and customers at the show. DuPont Cyrel Solutions, participating at the Labelexpo India, will be present at Stand L20, Hall 5, India Expo Center, Greater Noida, November 10-13, 2022. DuPont is presenting the latest technologies and solutions alongside live demonstrations for platemaking to improve label printing/ converting and create new business goals. In its booth, DuPont will focus on high-performing innovative technologies to address label converters’ challenges to achieve their sustainability, productivity, and quality goals. DuPont Cyrel FAST: 20+ years of efficiently serving the solventless, thermal flexo platemaking with more than 1,500 units installed around the world. Cyrel FAST is a thermal platemaking system that consists in a thermal processor and a large variety of photopolymer printing plates for flexible packaging, labels and other applications. The Cyrel FAST system offers superior productivity and performance while helping to reduce processing costs, time, and environmental impact compared to the existing solvent method. By eliminating the use of solvents – including water – from the platemaking process, the Cyrel FAST system require no drying time and plates can be ready for print under 45 minutes. The system is an achievement of more than 20 years of continuous evolution and investment into this platform and has resulted in more than 1500 installations globally. And this year we hit the 200th installation of its latest version, the FAST 2000TD.

Delivering solutions for global sustainability challenges Recently DuPont published the 2022 Sustainability Report that reinforces the company´s sustainability strategy: to help power its transformation as a premier multi-industrial company and to strength its portfolio to deliver long-term value creation. The Report brings comparation of the conventional solvent platemaking system with Cyrel FAST thermal digital

processing system; the result is that Cyrel FAST is more efficient. According to the third-party reviewed LCA released in 2021 the Cyrel FAST systems is shown to have a 38% lower impact in GWP and a NRE consumption 56% lower compared to the digital system with solvent, excluding the raw plate manufacturing impact. When the plate manufacturing is included, the GWP impact is 17% lower and the NRE consumption is 20% lower, compared to the digital process with solvent. The Cyrel® FAST 2000 TD equipment also reduces VOCs emissions by 99.7% due to its patented Catox System.

technology received the prestigious 2022 FTA Technical Innovation Award. The new Cyrel Lightning plate family is optimized for UV-LED exposure units to make full use of this system’s capabilities. The benefits of the plates include a further optimized match between access time and plate performance, while not compromising the print quality. Previously, exposure settings on LED units often had to be adjusted for either higher quality or shorter access time. The Cyrel Lightning plates challenge this as they were formulated from the ground up with UV-LED exposure characteristics in mind. The Cyrel LSH represents the first photopolymer plate of the Lightning family. It is solvent processable and currently available in 045 and 067 gauges.

“Packaging & Labeling market is consistently growing. Even during the pandemic times, this segment sustained and supported the print industry. The change which our industry has experienced in last 3-4 years is shrinking profit margins, increased media prices and shorter run lengths with multiple SKU’s. Today, brands are not interested in stock keeping, they want quick job turn arounds, VDP, personalization and customization. This changing scenario is pushing more and more label printers and convertors to adopt digital printing solutions. In another 4-5 years down the line, you may find most of the printers adapting to this agile, versatile and flexible technology. It is just the beginning and we have just begun,” concluded Jimit.

GEW to emphasize UV LED models at Labelexpo GEW will show the latest UV LED curing system, AeroLED, at the forefront of its product range. UV curing systems manufacturer GEW will showcase its entire product range at Labelexpo India 2022, emphasizing its UV LED models. The company will highlight how UV LED technology enables narrow web printers to make energy savings and reduce their carbon footprint. On November 10, 2022, Delhi Expo Centre will open its doors to printers from across South Asia and beyond. GEW will show the latest UV LED curing system, AeroLED, at the forefront of its product range. Furthermore, visitors to the show will be able to see AeroLED in operation on a working demonstration press. The AeroLED attracted significant attention at Labelexpo Americas in September due to the energy savings offered to printers who upgrade to this system. GEW expects that most print companies will see 50-70 percent energy savings when moving from conventional UV to UV LED.

30,000-hour-plus life of an AeroLED lamp, this equates to significant energy savings. A further benefit of AeroLED is its ArcLED compatibility. Customers can switch between the arc and LED curing on any station by utilizing the same fan and ducting formulation as GEW’s E2C system. Customers with E2C and GEW’s RHINO/RLT power supply platform can upgrade to LED by simply changing the cassettes and running a software upgrade. In terms of design, AeroLED is a high-power system for full cure, printing, coating, and converting applications up to 60cm wide, with the air being extracted by a single centralized fan sited away from the press. There is no need for integrated fans or electronics in the individual lampheads, which eliminates the high-pitched noise and risk of failure that these bring. AeroLED uses

GEW’s RHINO power supply and control range for ultimate reliability with Industry 4.0 approved, IoT Remote Monitoring as standard. Robert Rae, managing director of sales at GEW, commented: ‘UV LED is no longer just a technology for the future. It has become an essential technology for the present day. This change has been driven by the recent and dramatic increases in global energy prices, creating an unprecedented demand for low-energy, sustainable LED solutions, and improved ink technology and availability. Technological advancement is leading to ever more efficient and cost-effective UV LED products, as is demonstrated by the introduction of AeroLED. The opportunities are huge, and we are convinced that LED will soon become the dominant technology in our narrow web market.’

Energy savings achieved by switching to AeroLED come in two forms. Firstly, LEDs produce high UV dose at a fraction of the electrical power of conventional UV systems. Secondly, LEDs do not go into standby and are instant on/off, as required. Currently, UV arc systems are left on standby using approximately 20 percent power while jobs are changed; in comparison, LED can be switched off during this time. Over the

KP Services secures printing contracts for UK national newspapers Two KODAK PROSPER 6000P Presses have reliably printed the UK National newspaper titles & the Jersey Evening Post for the six years. Kodak has announced that KP Services (Jersey) Limited, a joint venture between Kodak and Guiton Group Limited, has secured printing contracts for UK national newspapers until May 2024. KP Services, based in Saint Saviour, Jersey, will continue to print the newspapers of publishers News UK, The Daily Mail Group, Reach Plc as well as the Jersey Evening Post titles, for distribution in Jersey and Guernsey with their portfolio running to more than 20 separate titles. Founded in 2015, KP Services began digital printing of the many newspaper titles for readers in the Channel Islands in May 2016. This meant that copies of national titles no longer had to be flown to the islands, often delayed and cancelled due to bad weather. In addition, printing of the local Jersey Evening Post, then published by Guiton Group, could be shifted from a newspaper press that was around 40 years old to state-of-the-art digital printing technology and from traditional black and white and partial color printing to full colour throughout. KP Services prints the newspapers on two KODAK PROSPER 6000P Presses, which use KODAK Stream Continuous Inkjet Technology. The PROSPER 6000P inkjet web press was designed specifically for publishing applications such as newspapers and books. It prints CMYK at speeds of

26

October 2022

up to 300 meters (1,000 feet) per minute on standard newsprint paper. The press is perfectly suited for sites that have to print a large number of low-volume titles. With very short set-up times, fast job changeovers and minimum start-up waste, it enables efficient and economical production of such short runs. According to Bill Paterson, Managing Director ofKP Services (Jersey) Ltd, the two KODAK PROSPER 6000P Presses have reliably printed the UK National newspaper titles as well as the Jersey Evening Post for the six years they have been in operation. The

company’s operational model has proven to be more than capable to service the readership population of the Channel Islands. “Day after day, our operation is proving that Kodak’s high-speed continuous inkjet technology is a perfect solution for flexible, short-run printing of newspapers and other publishing products,” commented Bill Paterson. “At the same time, it shows that KODAK PROSPER Presses are robust workhorses that meet the requirements of high-quality newspaper printing with frequent job changes and enable profitable production.”

Lucky Graphics: Perfect Solutions with Solution Based Service In talk with Rohit Sachdev, founder Lucky Graphics – a major force of the changing Indian Printing Industry since 1978 – about their journey and latest offerings. Rohit Sachdev, founder of one of the leading printing solutions providers of the country, started his journey with Standard Type Foundry in the year 1978. Standard Type Foundry was owned by his ‘guru’ and guide, Mr. S.L. Sachdev and was the distributors for Tech (Czechoslovakia) and Aurelia. It had a type foundry in Calcutta with distribution all over India. Rohit, after completion of his graduation, had a brief stint of a year and a half with Standard Type Foundry before beginning his professional journey in 1989.

“Our key focus remains reducing wastage of time as well as resources and increasing profitability.” – Rohit Sachdev

crucial part of Lucky Graphics’ success journey.

Rohit was new in the Printing industry with no formal technical education to have an ideal launch, however, his passion proved printing as his right business choice. He learnt the tricks of the trade through the tough route – spending time in the industry, understanding the needs of the customer and troubleshooting day-to-day problems of customers. Today he is a successful print professional leading one of the top print businesses of the country.

Flexography was at nascent stage and Rohit found it lucrative to explore new opportunities in the associated flexible packaging market. “Taiyo business Forms was ‘the’ machine for computer stationery and we had a great success with these machines in the country,” remembers Rohit. It was the time when the computer stationery was on its way to the pinnacle with sheets in reels with sprocket holes. Even multicolour printing was being done on it by flexographic plates. Many leading companies used to be Rohit’s customers who installed machines and equipment provided by Lucky Graphics. The big names in his clientele included Color Cartons, India Coated Cartons (Bangalore) and Vijay Flexible Containers to name a few. “More than business it was always our purpose to support our customers to achieve what their customers expected and we normally used to achieve it every time,” emphasizes Rohit.

Rohit has been associated with Toyobo for more than 40 years. The Japanese company called Nippon Graphics from Mr.Nishiwaki – an extensive export house selling all sorts of printing machines like Taiyyo, Iwasaki and Sugano punching machines, plate making machines and Toyobo plates etc – was a

They provided the big hit – Iwasaki Label Printing machines – and had sold many machines in the Indian market. The Iwasaki stall by them at Pamex Exhibition even received the “2nd Best Stall Design” award at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi. “The first Iwasaki press was installed at RK Papers, Taloja

Lucky Graphics clients, troubleshoots their technical issues and helps the organization develop new clients. “Our entire perspective is to take the flexographic industry on to the next level by leveraging our combined experience and knowledge and give back to the industry which has given us so much over the years,” states Raghav Sachdev.

near Mumbai. In association with Mr.Surinder Kapoor, we also had an Open House with customers ferried to and from Nariman Point to Taloja for two full days. It was a huge success and probably one of the few Open Houses in the region those days!,” reveals Rohit. Standard Graphics was started by Rohit in 1982. The company dealt with consumables for the printing and packaging industry which included offset plates Technova, inks and Toyobo consumables. In 1989, their Vaishnavi Graphics dealt mostly in Toyobo, Ohkaflex products. In between Rohit also had the opportunity to import and sell food packaging machinery including those for chocolate and biscuit and triple roll mills for ink manufacturing from Europe & East Germany. “We were the proud provider of the first pillow packing machine to Park Davis for their Halls toffees. This replaced the popular twist wrap used in toffee packing,” says Rohit. Down the years Rohit acquired distributorship of Sunga brand of rotogravure machine from Koreain association with his first cousin, late Mr.Sunil Kumar of Standard Machinery, Chennai. In 1991, with the bringing down of the Berlin wall, business diminished tremendously with East German companies, but Rohit continued with West Europe and Japan.

Label printing machines were a big draw for the Indian industry then; though it was just the beginning of industry then. “Toyobo thus developed for us to be one of the main companies we developed strong relationship with. They had numerous applications for the label industry including security printing like cheque printing and currency note printing and Braille printing etc. to mention a few. Specialty varnishes from Toyobo were an attraction for those who were in security printing in the country,” shares Rohit. Vaishnavi Graphics also represented Jemflex brand solvent based flexographic plates from Japan ever since. It is a family-owned company with a good hold in the European market and also having the distributorship of Lastra Neeraj brand of Offset Plates for Mumbai since 1988. For some time, they also distributed Technova’s PS plates. Lucky Graphics started in 2003. Toyobo has been the mainstay with their variety of plate products suitable for even dry offset printing for metal can printing applications (like for aerosols, aerated drinks etc.) in addition to flexography and letterpress. In 2003, Rohit’s son Raghav Sachdev joined him in the business after his Graduation and started taking care of the sales of the organization. He is presently looking after the North Indian market’s sales at Noida branch. He is the technology partner to

Rohit puts special emphasis on the technical aspects of flexographic printing while planning solutions for his customers. “Since flexography is a technical subject, we always ensure that we guide our customers on the right raw material usage, minimize wastage, improve productivity and print quality etc. and it has always been our objective to contribute to our customers’ best advantage. Our key focus remains reducing wastage of time as well as resources and increasing profitability,” underlines Rohit. He considers his experience with customer Essel Propack as a milestone achievement in recent times. “It was a turning point when we enabled the conversion of solvent-based flexographic plate making to water-washable Toyobo plates workflow for one of our key clients, Essel Propack Limited,” says Rohit.“Apart from being an environment friendly process without losing the essential elements of printing including quality, it was a great achievement to convince one of the best setups like Essel. It was a major turning point for us. It was possible because of extremely cooperative management of Essel,” he adds. Through this environment friendly upgrade, Essel Propack reduced the plate making time from almost five hours (for a six plate job) to just under an hour, resulting in increased productivity from the existing machines itself. This Indian success was later repeated for switching over to water washable plates in China, Egypt and the UK as well, all enabled by Lucky Graphics’ expertise. Toyobo by Lucky Graphics is a popular solution with Indian print providers. “Toyobo is the only company which provides letterpress plates with flat top dot feature resulting in higher quality images from the press, they have been the pioneer of waterwashable photo-sensitive printing plate in India since the 1980,” declares Rohit. In addition to EPL, Wada unit (1.4mm and

“Flexographic printing has a great future in India,” notes Rohit. “The flexo printing will part-take the gravure printing market share for sure since the quality standards have matched gravure and, in some cases, even superseded it. The plate versus cylinder costs cannot be compared. Short and medium runs – and to an extent the long runs – will also be taken over by the Flexo industry,” he adds. “With ever increasing footfalls in supermarkets and hypermarkets,

and shelves vying for catching eyeballs and consumer’s curiosity, flexography is going to be the choice for packaging printers,” assures Rohit. Rohit’s clear vision is equally shared by his two sons Vaibhav & Raghav and the trio leads a successful business to greater heights. The QZ series is available in both analogue and digital place processing, and it also has a distinct advantage of capability to go up to 200 line screen and over 10,000 dpi,” asserts Rohit.

This impressive timeline proved the real potential financial benefits possible from the ECG process. The path to successful ECG can be a gradual process, job by job, to seamlessly fit with your own company’s capabilities and needs. The FlexoKITE team is ready to assist converters that are looking to make the step towards ECG. FlexoKITE is a state of art, fully equipped flexo facility that was designed and set up to provide a supportive base for the flexo industry in Asia. Assisting with R&D testing and fine-tuning designs, printers can convert

W&H presents efficient production, circular economy and digitization at K 2022 Get in the Loop - W&H presented new machine technologies and packaging solutions for sustainable flexible packaging production at a very successful K 2022. Windmöller & Hölscher, specialist for machinery in the flexible packaging market, presented new developments in three areas at K 2022: Efficient production, Circular Economy, and Digitization. The W&H slogan at K 2022, “Get in the Loop” and the infinity symbol illustrate the way these three topics influence each other and contribute to the success of sustainability. “The K trade fair has proven itself as a meeting point for the industry, as a performance show and as an important point of contact with our customers,” says Peter Steinbeck, CEO of W&H. “Just like before the pandemic, we had visitors from all over the world at the W&H booth. With the live machine demonstrations three times a day, we reached several hundred visitors each time,” adds Dr. Sascha Witt, CSO of W&H. On four exhibition days, W&H hosted an inhouse EXPO at its headquarters in Lengerich, where another 12 lines including extrusion, printing, and converting machinery were presented. Around 1,100 visitors from 83 countries traveled to Lengerich. The highlight for trade fair visitors was the VAREX II blown film line in operation at the booth. The daily machine show in Düsseldorf featured live demonstrations of the new EASY2 Change assistance system, an autopilot for product changes. Compared to an experienced operator, the number of necessary clicks for a product change is reduced by more than 70% and the time needed is cut by more than half – and all that with the certainty that no errors are made. This is especially important for difficult products, for example containing recycled materials with varying qualities. After the end of the trade show, the line is now being delivered to the customer IsoFlex Packaging, a member of the Sigma Plastics Group in Nashville, Tennessee, USA. W&H also highlighted new packaging solutions ready for the Circular Economy: Six examples that are made for recycling and four solutions that use high percentages of recycled materials. All solutions have been

extruded and printed with W&H lines and have been tested for their practicability with W&H sack making lines or with converting partners – proving that sustainable solutions with the required functionalities are possible today.

Circular Economy – Solutions ready for recycling Recyclable pet food bags: W&H is showing two different approaches to this recyclable packaging solution, that is trending in the market: a blown film with a co-extruded EVOH barrier layer and one made with a functional barrier coating during the printing process.

PE Valve Sack: All new film recipe with 30 % post-industrial material that displays similar mechanical properties as a conventionally produced film.

DIGITIZATION EASY2 Change: The new EASY2 Change assistance system supports the operator during every necessary step of a product changeover saving time, waste, and resources. RUBY App: The brand-new app for mobile production monitoring based on the IOTSystem by W&H.

EFFICIENT PRODUCTION Recyclable Coffee Pouch: A stretched MDO PE-film with an EVOH barrier layer combined with PE sealing film. With a total amount of only 2% EVOH this solution exceeds the current recycling regulations, while at the same time providing the barrier properties for oxygen and water vapor required for this kind of packaging.

Circular Economy – Solutions using recyclates 50% PCR Collation Shrink: All new collation shrink film with 50% postconsumer recycled material. It offers the same shrink values and mechanical properties as conventional, nonPCR recipes.

MDO-PE in 2x1260 MM: W&H shows a new line set-up for MDO-PE producing 2x1260 mm net width with optimal film properties, increased output and bag-making efficiency. This solution shows that recyclable monomaterial solutions can be produced at highest efficiency. FILMATIC II V: The new winder generation with best-in-class winding performance, easy operation and excellent safety standards. The start of the winding process is critical, therefore the surface winding from the beginning to the very end of the roll was improved.

The new 3.2m (126-in) wide HP Latex 2700 printers take production efficiency to the next level, offering vivid colours at up to 89m2/hr (958 ft²/hr) via symmetrical double printheads, which come equipped with automatic printhead cleaning technology. Users can take on high-margin jobs with 30% wider gamut at high speed, preserving media gloss and feel across a range of signage and décor

applications – including thin films, vinyl and paper. HP says, its HP Latex 2700W printers offer the whitest white ink on the market at speeds of up to 54 m2/hr (581 ft²/hr), allowing PSPs to produce high-margin applications on pre-coloured and transparent media. Automatic ink recirculation and white printheads that can be stored in an offline rotating chamber eliminates waste between white jobs. All devices in the Latex 2700 series run on fourth generation HP Latex ink – bringing UL ECOLOGO certification, while also meeting UL GREENGUARD GOLD and Toy Safety requirements. This allows PSPs to embrace jobs in even the most sensitive environments. Additionally, the whole portfolio takes HP Eco-Carton – cardboard-based ink cartridges that reduce plastic by using 100% recycled and recyclable cardboard containers, as well as recycled plastics from HP’s closed-loop recycling process, including postconsumer beverage bottles and U-validated oceanbound plastics. SAi’s extends access to its assets library SAi’s Sign Design Elements Image Library now available to all Flexi users. SA International (SAi), provider of design software solutions for the signmaking, digital printing, textile and CNC machining industries, has announced that its popular Sign Design Elements online assets library will now be available to all users of the company’s flagship Flexi signmaking software. The extensive library, comprising a continually expanding collection of downloadable images, graphics and templates for sign & display users, was previously only available as an addon feature to SAi’s subscription-based customers.

Via its ongoing partnership with Ingram Publishing, providers of the assets library, Flexi users can access over ten million different graphics, including high-resolution images, logos, fonts, cut-ready vector illustrations, vehicle outlines and wraps, and metallic-ready files. There are over 25,000 templates alone for global car and truck makes and models. Additionally, users are now able to conveniently access Sign Design Elements through the Flexi software application. This removes the need to open a separate browser, saving time for customers. “We introduced Sign Design Elements three years ago, to provide an easy-to-access stock of useful assets that sign & display users can download for inclusion across a full gamut of graphic applications,” comments Annette Plummer, Vice President of Marketing, SAi. “Since its launch,

the library has already expanded from six to over ten-million individual files. The time saved through the new Sign Design Elements extension adds huge value to our software, making life easier for customers in what was previously a somewhat laborious process,” adds Plummer. “We are delighted to continue our partnership with the world’s foremost sign software provider; Flexi print and cut software integrated with Sign Design Elements creative stock images is a perfect combination,” comments Louis Ingram, CEO and Founder, Ingram Publishing. “We’ve added a great deal more downloadable content since the initial partnership a few years ago, with 100,000 new high-resolution assets being uploaded to the library on a monthly basis.” All Flexi users can take advantage of five free-of-charge Sign Design Elements downloads, with new product tiers available for those needing additional assets. Prices are USD 14.99 for 25 downloads/month and USD 29.99 for 75 downloads/month.

There are several finishing tables in the market, but we needed a sturdy and rugged table which can last for years. The Kongsberg’s rock-solid build differentiates it from other technologies in the market,” he continues.
