St.Francis Press upgrades with Heidelberg SM 52 Four-colour Press Apart from performance and service support, the Heidelberg SM 52 has enabled St. Francis Press to win many new customers and short run jobs from jobbers. St.Francis Press is a third generation business headed by the current Director Mr.Rajan. It took off its journey in the year 1926 when Rajan’s grandfather founded a letter press unit. His grandfather and father were both agriculturists and took on printing as an added business. The business moved on to his father in 1958 and Rajan, an electronics engineer, took over from him in 1986. “In the beginning days they were mostly doing binding jobs. While studying in college, I also worked with my father in the press. After five years, as I finished my studies, I got inducted into it,” says Rajan. He started with two old Victorian letter presses. In 1986 he bought a brand new Heidelberg MOV press and two years later, added a single colour Dominant press. In the year 2000, he added a four colour Shiva press from Manugraph and in 2007, he installed India’s first four colour Ryobi 924 press. In 2010 he added a Kodak CtP machine to his Prepress and the most recent installation is their used Heidelberg SM 52 press.
St.Francis Press customers expect high quality print jobs at the best competitive rates, which it meets with the help of its state-of-the-art infrastructure having technologically advanced machines and equipment.
This time Rajan opted for remarketed equipment. “We went for a used machine because we had hands on experience working with our first Heidelberg MOV. We have been working with it for 30 years. Secondly, I am more confident about the performance of a used Heidelberg press than that of any other other make,” explains Rajan. “With reducing margins it wasn’t a wise decision to heavily invest in new machines. Moreover, I could confidently handle any service problems with the SM 52. I was sure that I can get
better productivity out of this used press than from others,” he adds. He is also of the view that there haven’t been significant improvements in features of an offset press since 2000. Even speed of machines has marginally increased from 13000 sph to 15000 sph. Therefore, he decided in favour of a used machine which also well suited their needs. Since Rajan took over a growing company, he says he did not face many challenges in the business. Also he was qualified and experienced in working with the press even before he took over, he was able to handle sundry day to day problems. With over 50 employees and apart from printing and prepress, St. Francis Press offers many Postpress facilities through its folding, perfect binding, ruling, cutting and screen printing machines. “We can offer almost any printing solution to our customers,” says Rajan. St.Francis press mainly caters to the commercial printing segment and have amongst others, customers like banks, finance and FMCG companies. According to Rajan, the uniqueness that makes their customers stay with them is their focus on quality. “We don’t compromise on quality. The second aspect is timely delivery. We offer complete service to our customers, including suggestions on enhancing their printed product at competitive price and good quality,” he says.
Key Notes : > The third generation St.Francis Press installed a Heidelberg SM 52. > Heidelberg SM 52 – a sturdy small format press which suited their requirements. > Rajan, Director St. Francis Press, calls his Heidelberg SM 74 a life time investment.

They are known for their quality and are proud recipients of a National Award from AIFMP. Earlier they did not have any marketing team and all business came through word of mouth reference. Now St. Francis Press has two sales executives. “Because of stiff competition we need to be constantly in touch with our customers, else they tend to go to other printers. Keeping contacts intact is one of the main jobs of these sales personnel,” he says. St.Francis Press customers expect high quality print jobs at the best competitive rates, which it meets with the help of its stateof-the-art infrastructure having technologically advanced machines and equipment. “We want to get into the packaging segment – printing of plastic covers to pack many consumer products. There is lot of demand for such products. We plan to invest in a digital printer for printing such plastic covers,” reveals Rajan.
A number of four colour offset presses and digital presses have been installed in Kerala in the last five years. There are many printing presses installed even in smaller places, villages etc. All these presses are getting business regularly. This was not the case five years before, when almost every second job was outsourced to other states. But the worrying factor is that due to the supply demand gap, every one drops their price and that has reduced the margins to the lowest possible level. However, there is a printing boom in Kerala. Food Packaging products offer a lot of scope in Kerala market. It is next to the largest segment, Commercial Printing. Another segment that Rajan looks forward to is to tap the demand of short run jobs. He sees a lot of upcoming opportunities in Kerala. “Kerala Tourism is a growing industry. Food packaging and many short run label printing jobs are on the upside,” he says. “Though many digital presses have been installed in Kerala, I don’t see it as a threat to the Offset printers here. Both will coexist. The
Indian Printing Industry is on the growth path – the growth rate is faster than last year. The growth rate is around 15% over the previous year,” adds Rajan. He considers his loyal customers as their greatest strength. The Post-press infrastructure of St. Francis Press is what he wants to take up next. “We will soon upgrade our Postpress further and will invest in more modern technology here,” he informs. Presently he is focusing on reaping the best out of his latest possession, the Heidelberg SM 52. “Heidelberg SM 52 is a sturdy small format press which suited our requirements. Apart from the confidence Heidelberg equipments give in form of performance and service support, the machine has enabled St. Francis Press to win many new customers and short run jobs from jobbers. Rajan calls it a life time investment. “A life time, trouble free investment which perfectly met our printing needs,” he concludes.
Kerala Printers Association (KPA) holds first AGM at Tripunithura, Kerala The first Annual General Meeting of KPA (Kerala Printers Association) was held on 28th September, 2014 at Tripunithura, Kerala. presence in Kerala with a large number of installations, Venkataraman further added. HoMAI re-launches as Authentication Solution Providers’ Association ASPA aims to be the world’s first and only non-profit representing entire authentication solutions industry. Hologram Manufacturers Association of India (HoMAI), which was founded sixteen years ago on 1 December 1998 as the world’s second and Asia’s only Association representing holography, has now been re-launched this year with a broader mandate as Authentication Solution Providers’ Association (ASPA). By helping check counterfeiting, ASPA helps protect consumers, unlock revenue realization for brand owners and governments, as well as ensure steady growth of its members and the industry in general. ASPA President Mr. Manoj Kochar says, “According to Business Action to Stop Counterfeiting and Piracy (BASCAP) of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), the impact of the counterfeit and pirated goods on the global economy today stands at a staggering $1 trillion. Like terrorism, counterfeiting is becoming a sophisticated and global menace that can have a crippling impact in any part of the world irrespective of its country of origin. We must develop a unified global strategy with powerful industry linkages and knowledge sharing platforms in order to stop this illegal trade effectively. ASPA is a call to unite various authentication solution providers across the world to galvanize our forces and strengthen this shield univocally. ASPA re-aligns our objectives to more accurately represent the transformation of products and services offered by our member companies. Our broader scope also covers a wide array of authentication technologies that have evolved over the years.” Counterfeiting today impacts various industries including pharmaceuticals, FMCG, finance, electronics, automobile parts, entertainment, apparel, software, manufacturing, tobacco, liquor and others. ASPA members already protect over 10,000 brands worldwide through the identification of genuine products and documents. As the world’s first and only industry body of its kind, ASPA aims to comprehensively cover the broader interests of the entire
authentication solutions industry worldwide, including, but not limited to, holograms, optically variable devices (OVD’s), taggants, security inks and substrates, watermarks, nanotechnologies, RFIDs, barcode/ QR code-based digital tracking and verification solutions, security and tamper-evident labels and any other brand protection and authentication solutions. ASPA’s tagline – ‘Diverse Technologies, Common Goal’– summarises its vision to become the global voice of the authentication solution providers that facilitate brand protection through anticounterfeiting, anti-tampering and tracking and tracing measures. Mr. Anil Rajput, Senior Vice-President, Corporate Affairs, ITC Limited, and Chairman of FICCI Cascade (Committee against Smuggling & Counterfeiting Activities Destroying the Economy), says, “I am glad to note the re-launch of ASPA, which will represent an even broader interests of the
entire authentication solutions industry. Counterfeiting and smuggling plagues almost all industries and leads to loss of trust, money, lives and livelihoods. Proper authentication solutions are a must to help validate genuine products. On the technology vendor side, ASPA complements FICCI Cascade’s consumer and industry efforts in curbing counterfeits, by bringing together all types of authentication solutions on one platform. I hope that this move will help in rapid adoption of anti-counterfeiting, antitampering and tracking and tracing solutions, which will yield significant direct and indirect benefits in the form of increased revenues,
brand perceptions, reduced litigation costs, and greater customer retention.” Welcoming the move, Prof. (Dr.) N C Saha, Director of the Indian Institute of Packaging, an autonomous body under Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Govt. of India said, “It is heartening to note that HOMAI is reinventing itself as ASPA to take a higher responsibility to fight against counterfeiting in packaging. The market has become highly competitive which leads to the demand of innovations in the field of anti-counterfeiting to protect the consumer interest. As a result, it will be a great move to amalgamate multiple authentication technology providers under a single umbrella to offer strong brand protection. I believe ASPA is poised to play a much-needed and vital role in consolidating the entire gamut of authentication solutions, and catalyzing their adoption in various kind of packaging across all industry segments. Authentication of a product is invariably carried out through integration between the authentication technology and the packaging, and Indian Institute of Packaging welcomes this move. I am confident that ASPA will meet the demand of modern consumers to effectively fight against the counterfeiters.” ASPA works closely with world-leading peers and authorities such as International Hologram Manufacturers Association (IHMA), Counterfeit Intelligence Bureau (CIB) and Interpol. It lays down guidelines to encourage adoption of best practices, quality standards and usage of advanced technology to provide truly customised, costeffective and consistently reliable solutions. It also actively analyses industry trends and provides updates on global news, knowledge resources and best practices to its members. ASPA has also launched a brand new website – www.aspaglobal.com.

Success Begins With A Dream… Chennai’s Xpress-Imprint invests in Heidelberg Printmaster PM 74 & Polar 78 Cutter Your dream is your destiny”, smiles Mr. Nagi Reddy, the Director of Chennai-based print shop Xpress–Imprint, which recently embellished its strong portfolio with value additions from Heidelberg – the Printmaster PM 74 and Polar 78 programmable cutter. A quality-conscious entrepreneur, Nagi Reddy hails from an artistic heritage. The name should ring a bell for all movie buffs. His illustrious grandfather, Mr. B. Nagi Reddy, manufactured celluloid dreams for the South Indian audience. A film producer, he founded and established the famous Vijaya Vauhini studios, one of the largest in Asia. The studio has now been converted to a multi-specialty hospital. His grandfather was also a printing pioneer and a past president of All India Federation of Master Printers (AIFMP). He founded and managed BNK PRESS and Prasad Process -- both multi-awardee Litho & Offset printing Companies in Chennai from the 60’s until the 90’s. Actually, Nagi Reddy’s association with Heidelberg dates back to his childhood days, where he would play in the press room around the several Heidelberg cylinder presses operating in full swing at BNK PRESS. Taking cues from his roots, Nagi founded a modest, one-man print shop in 1998 to supply printed stationery for Healthcare institutions. He recalls the challenging times with a chuckle, “It was like a movie. I had a mini-offset press and played all roles from machine operator to running the business. But, the experience was educational and inspired my journey towards new horizons”. Today, Xpress Imprint is a compelling presence in Vadapalani, Chennai, and a trusted name among print buyers in the city. The firm installed a Heidelberg Printmaster GTO 52 in 2008, later expanding to a Speedmaster SM 52 five-color press in 2010. The latest installation, the Printmaster PM 74 Four-color press, is pre-owned equipment from Heidelberg.
with ease, and yield better productivity. Heidelberg was our natural choice. Our past experience with Heidelberg has been exemplary in every way, including the aftersales support. The Heidelberg Printmaster PM 74 fits our requirements to a tee. It has the flexibility to switch between packaging and commercial jobs.” The highly automated Heidelberg Printmaster PM 74 operates at a speed of 13,000 sheets per hour, delivering increased productivity. The compact press is ideal for 29 inch format printing. The equipment can process substrates ranging from 0.03-0.6 millimeter, resulting in high degree of flexibility. On his choice of remarketed equipment, Nagi says, “We decided to go for used equipment, mainly because of our confidence in Heidelberg India’s remarketed equipment division. We are not new to used equipment. The Heidelberg Speedmaster SM 52 five-color press we acquired in 2010 is also remarketed equipment. The press is in perfect condition even today and its performance is outstanding. We were more than happy with the after-sales support, as well. So, we thought why not again? The Printmaster PM 74 was imported from Germany, after a thorough inspection by Heidelberg engineers. Heidelberg offered extended warranty for the spares and
replaced rollers and blankets on the machine with brand new ones. From the date of installation, Heidelberg has been supportive out and out.” The format and substrate-switchover features of the Printmaster PM 74 have helped Xpress–Imprint achieve better productivity, inviting more business. “Success begins with a dream. If you are willing to work hard and go the extra mile to make your customer happy, you can make your dream come true. Believe me, you do not have to be rich or famous to achieve your goals”, Nagi Reddy states emphatically. The other acquisition is a brand new Polar 78 high-speed cutter, which provides remarkable efficiency. It is equipped with the‘OptiKnife’ knife-changing system that facilitates easy operation, and precise cutting accuracy. The Polar 78 cutter joins an impressive array of cutting, folding and die-punching machines in the post-press division of Xpress-Imprint. Venkataraman, Regional Sales Manager of Heidelberg India says, “This is our third successful installation for Xpress-Imprint. Heidelberg is pleased to associate with Xpress Imprint again. We will continue to provide support in every way we can. Needless to mention, our experts pay frequent visits to the print shop providing technical support as and when required.”
Nagi comments on the latest addition, “We were looking to upgrade to a press that could run both commercial and packaging jobs, switching between the two activities

Suite 14: The most complete collection of preproduction software tools for labels and packaging A major emphasis of the booth will be Suite 14, an update of the world’s most complete collection of preproduction software tools for packaging and sign & display production. It supports and manages the packaging and print processes at brand owners, retailers, designers, packaging manufacturers and print service providers. Suite 14 focuses on five key directions supporting the future of packaging workflows: •
•
Superior quality: The prepress operator’s focus shifts entirely to quality checking: once to obtain customer design approval and again just before the press starts. Interactive tools dedicated to check quality simplify the task. Task driven interactive editing: Quality checking, exception handling and building smart templates are the

prepress operator’s main tasks. New cross platform software apps provide a task-driven user experience. Intelligent wizards guide the operator through expert processes. Improved workflow automation: Smart workflow tickets route designs automatically to a press-ready printing plate. Workflow automation stretches beyond printing and finishing and integrates with logistics. Operator interaction is limited to exception handling and quality checking. Open industry standards enable integration with business systems and data silos, regardless of location. Cloud based packaging management systems interface with prepress workflow servers openly and transparently. Smart templates: The basis for a lightsout workflow, smart design templates separate content from creation: the designer determines the looks of the pack “by example” and within a brand guidelines framework. Critical content resides securely in the cloud-based packaging management system of the brand owner. No more ‘copy and paste’ in Adobe Illustrator but linking smart objects to secure and approved content in a database. This guarantees brand consistency and legal compliance at

maximum productivity and shortest time to market. Online supply chain integration: Smart templates and workflow tickets connect prepress to all stakeholders. Operations run virtually anywhere in the world. Integrated packaging-savvy production and asset management systems dramatically improve time to market and reduced cost.

Ajay Aggarwal: Clarity on Organized Retail can give impetus to Label Industry Ajay Aggarwal, has been associated with the Printing Industry for over 23 years and is part of the Self-Adhesive Label Industry for the last 11 years. He has been witness to a lot of change that underwent in the industry all these years and has had an interesting journey that gave him a lot of friends in his professional field. Ajay disagree to the recent recession and rather sees a continuous growth in the industry during the last couple of years. “My feeling is that the expansion by printers in printing facilities has outstripped the real growth in volume by end customers and leading to increasing commoditization of the Self Adhesive Labels market,” he says. “This would be clearly evident by the fact that the machinery suppliers today are building machines with shorter web paths and
automatic register controls and other such features which increase the efficiency of the production thus reducing wastage’s which in turn reduces costs,” adds Ajay. He is also quite upbeat about the new more stable political situation in the centre which he hopes will spur growth. He says that it would also be able to bring capital and working capital costs down. “People of India have lot of expectations with the new government and hope the business environment will improve and consequently also help the growth of printing fraternity. Also we expect that there will be increasing clarity on Organized Retail which will give a further impetus to the Label Industry,” says Ajay. He is a bit concerned about the ongoing trend of reverse auction. Many Printers are
working with a select group of customers. If any group leaves this leads to a lot of problems for the printers. Therefore, during reverse auctions printers tend to also reduce prices emotionally leading to unrealistic prices at times. “This, in my opinion, is extremely bad from the print buyers perspective because if a printer doesn’t get sustainable margins, he may resort to unfair practices which in the long run adversely affect the printer and also the brand,” says Ajay.

The Label Industry is a wonderful network of friends from around the world “There is an urgent need in India to open training schools for label printing professionals and have enough technical forums to trigger technical upgradation and innovation. The industry should create a platform that would allow the label community to refer to, in time of need. There should also be regular interactions with professionals of the industry from around the world,” says Harveer Sahni, a Label Industry veteran of over 37 years and MD of Weldon Celloplast. Weldon went through a major restructuring to rework its existing business of commodity labelstock manufacturer to a specialty producer and marketer of total solutions to the label industry. Major challenges faced by the company then included the erratic foreign exchange movements which significantly delayed investments. This year, however things are crystalising well for Weldon and growth in labels is looking up. “Intense competition has put margins under pressure for the label printers. They are on back-foot. ROI issues are affecting their decisions regarding making big time
investments in equipments,” says Harveer. Recently, printers have been found optimistic about investment decisions encouraged by double digit growth. “We will be launching many innovative coated products from our manufacturing division in the next few months,” reveals Harveer. Among the key challenges of the Indian Label Industry, shortage of trained manpower is one of the main issues. “Poaching of personnel, reverse auctions creating competition, cutting corners to win, downgrading quality and lower prices are the issues marring the industry,” points out Harveer. “It is a big deterrent for quality enhancement as lower prices do not encourage investment in new technology. Margins drive technical growth,” he adds. He believes that the organized retail will grow with many educated youngsters joining the mainstream each year with disposable incomes to spend. FDI may speed up this process that will generate demand for good labels, he says.
Mr. Harveer Sahni
The most successful value addition in the Indian Label Industry, according to Harveer, has been the switch over from normal Flexo to UV Flexo. He also thinks that the evolution of Pre-press to bring Flexo quality comparable to Offset and Gravure is another major turning point for the industry. Heading one of the top active members of LMAI, Harveer looks forward to the day when the industry will have a pan national think tank.
Pragati Graphics: Quality through cartons, leaflets, labels and packaging Label Industry include Foiling and Booklet Labels. Pragati Graphics is an LMAI member and Rajesh is pretty appreciative of the association’s endeavour in the direction of training operators.
Rajesh Nema of Pragati Graphics had his share of experience in the Sheetfed Offset Printing before he ventured into Label Industry in 1998. “It’s been a big learning curve, I had to un-learn many of Sheetfed Offset practices, which I enjoyed a lot though. I am still learning and enjoying,” says Rajesh who presently looks after sales, purchase, production and finance at Pragati. Having seen a less than satisfactory patch during 2010-2013, Rajesh says the scenario has changed now and looks promising as well. “Particularly with the changed sentiments of general public as well as the industry people after new political situation in the country, I do see a positive change in the business scenario,” he adds. Cost Structuring affects Label Industry Sandeep Zaveri joined his father in business in the year 1994. After initial challenges, he also took on the hard recession times of recent years. The goings-on were particularly tough because of the costing structure in his field of Label Printing. Now, he is pretty optimistic about the new simplified taxation policies proposed by the new government at the centre. However, an area of concern, according to him, is huge capital investment by players in the industry and little concern to handle the cost structures. Booklet labels has been the most promising field in the Label market in India, says Sandeep, who is a member and one of the Directors since 2002 who ventured LMAI. “LMAI is taking with cost restructuring and I hope we shall be able to address the cost structuring issues affecting the present Label Industry,” says Sandeep, Director, Total Print Solutions, Navi Mumbai.

Mudrika Labels has been into manufacturing of self-adhesive labels and related products for the last over 18 years. Self-Adhesive Labels (in different forms), Stickers, Heat Transfer Labels (HTL) etc., its key focus remains on providing durable, efficient & competitively priced products to clients in India as well as across the globe. They currently export to 12 countries as also major Indian exporters get their products labelled by them. “The demand for quality work at lower cost is never ending,” says Mr.Manish Desai, Managing Director, Mudrika Labels. “We are always on R&D mode to deliver the best looking labels which are not only competitively priced but also meet international quality standards,” he adds.
“In last 10 years many Indian entrepreneurs have capitalized on risk by opening their wings for investing in the latest technologies and adaptation to business dynamics. Mudrika Labels is one of them.” – Manish Desai
He strongly believes that the quest for quality never ends and there can never be a recession for quality. Mr.Manish Desai
Manish is a bit concerned about the rat race in the highly competitive Labels market though. He attributes it, in part, to the low-priced machines from China. “The capital cost of these machines being low, they are resulting in lower overall manufacturing costs and thus contributing to unhealthy competition like price war,” he says. Label manufacturers are being driven to mass production at reduced prices. Other materials are largely affected by high inflation which makes sustaining margins even more challenging. “The buyer today is in the driver’s seat dictating prices for products. The scenario which was more prevalent in the Commercial Offset industry, has been moving into the Labels industry as well for about five years,” reasons Manish. He thinks that adaptation of technology in minimal time and delivery to international clients has been the key value addition by Indian Label industry. “In last 10 years many Indian entrepreneurs have capitalized on risk by opening their wings for investing in the latest technologies and adaptation to business dynamics. Our company is one of them. From Self-Adhesive stickers, to Heat Transfer Labels the journey was challenging yet fruitful. Now we are at par with international Label market,” he states.

from the current government. I expect the manufacturing to experience a good boost with the ‘Make in India’ scheme of the government,” he adds.
Manish is pretty optimistic about the industry growth in coming times. “A stable Government always add to the overall growth of the country as well as to the Industries,” he believes. “Business houses in India and abroad have lot of expectations
The Vision Statement of Mudrika reads: “To be the leader in Label Printing industry by providing international quality through constant innovation, most advanced printing technology, ever expanding products &

Parksons Packaging installs India’s first Kongsberg V Diversifies to BillerudKorsnäs branded corrugated carton trays while relying on Esko’s prepress and digital finishing solutions. Parksons Packaging, one of the top monocarton companies in the country, has diversified into the production of SoliQ branded corrugated carton trays under license from BillerudKorsnäs (Sweden). Designed specifically for fruit and vegetables, the special SoliQ marked corrugated boxes are manufactured according to stringent quality standards ensuring that the contents are protected throughout their supply chain. Parksons Packaging’s diversification into this new vertical of branded corrugated cartons means investing in new equipment for corrugation, multi-colour flexographic printing and slotting and creasing at its Chakan plant. However, its design and sample-making infrastructure was already in place; Parksons is a long-time user of Esko software including ArtiosCAD for the structural design of folding cartons. Parksons Chairman Mr. Ramesh Kejriwal says, “The Esko prepress system with ArtiosCAD software helped us in building
our packaging design facility into a vibrant innovation centre called DESIGN PARK.” The diversification from offset to flexography and the change from folding cartons to printed corrugated trays for Parksons have been smooth because of the familiarity and confidence in Esko software tools and sample making hardware. Parksons Packaging was the first Indian packaging converter to install a Kongsberg XL series sample maker when it was launched in 2001. Having found the first Kongsberg XL most reliable, the saga of trust has continued with Parksons’ installation of the newly launched Kongsberg V20 sample making table for the new diversification project. Parksons Packaging Chairman Ramesh Kejriwal, says that, “The new sample maker was essential because of the larger size needed for the sampling of corrugated cartons. Its immense robustness and
flexibility means that it can cut and crease samples and short runs of both folding cartons and special corrugated cartons. The Kongsberg V20 can handle materials of sizes up to 1750 x 1650 mm. Its flexibility means that we can cut rubber blankets that are needed for the spot varnishing of folding cartons but we can also cut flexographic plates for mounting on our new multi-color flexo printer slotter. Our familiarity with the use of multiple Esko sample makers at our several plant locations made it a natural progression to the Kongsberg V20 when we were contemplating sample making for the corrugation business.” Parksons has the complete prepress and workflow software from Esko to drive both folding carton and corrugated carton production. Mr. Kejriwal explains, “The Esko prepress software has been the backbone of our folding carton production. Thus the prepress and design infrastructure was in place and our familiarity and confidence in the appropriate tools and particularly in ArtiosCAD, helped us with our diversification. With the knowledge that Esko has of the flexo workflow we were encouraged to extend their prepress system to our diversification in the corrugation business. It’s simply a combination of leading edge software and in the case of the sample maker, hardware – reliability and trust.” Srihari Rao, Esko’s Director of Sales for India recalls the strong relationship with a pioneering and ever-growing partner, “We highly value our long relationship with Parksons Packaging. As this company continues with expansion and diversification to new locations and new segments, it can count on us at Esko as trusted partners. We’ll help Parksons Packaging to leverage its human resource and investment in our prepress and workflow technology”.

Ajanta Packaging – Advantage Waterless Offset Labeling Ajanta Packaging has created a special niche in Waterless Offset label printing. The unique technology has been a significant part of its growth trajectory. Ajanta is not an unfamiliar name in the Indian industry. The columns of PRESSIdeas have regularly served as the gateway to learn more about such inspiring players within our fraternity. Those who have been our regular readers should remember the earlier coverage of Ajanta’s Baddi unit and subsequently another comprehensive coverage on Ajanta. We happened to visit its Sharjah unit last month and the following story speaks about this unit of Ajanta Packaging.
Chandan is a great fan of the Iwasaki Waterless Offset and has one in all his units – Baddi, Daman, Mumbai and now in Sharjah. According to Chandana, Iwasaki is one of the key reasons for the success of Ajanta in Sharjah.
To give a brief on Ajanta Packaging, the company has its head office in Mumbai. In 2000 Ajanta launched its second unit in the Union Territory of Daman with Waterless Offset as its mainstay and unique selling proposition. Till date, it is the only printer in India to print labels using this technology. Talking about the Waterless technology, Mr.Chandan Khanna, owner of Ajanta Packaging, says “This technology helps reproduce dots up to 2% that gives you a finer output in vignettes and half tones.” Between 2003 and 2005 Ajanta Packaging installed more Waterless Offset machines and in 2007 installed its first High Speed Flexo machine at its Daman unit. The same year, Khanna launched Ajanta Packaging’s second unit at Baddi in Himachal Pradesh with the installation of one Waterless Offset machine.
Subsequently two highly configured, 10-station, Flexo machines from MPS (Netherlands) were added to the unit. The special feature of this machine is that it prints Flexo and Screen simultaneously with facilities for Hot and Cold Foil in a single pass. The unit is today one of the leading label printing units in the country catering to the demands of some of the top MNCs. The year 2008 put Ajanta Packaging on the global map with the starting of its third unit which was at Sharjah. Two Waterless Offset machines were installed in the beginning. The second unit at Sharjah FZC, which is a Dabur approved production unit, today has a state-of-the-art Mark Andy machine.
Iwasaki – filling the void in high quality short-run label market The centrally located Ajanta Packaging FZC (Sharjah) caters to the diverse needs of customers across the United Arab Emirates (UAE). After about 7 years of its establishment, the unit supplies around 95 percent of its total production to the UAE market and the rest is exported. Mr.Chandan Khanna, the owner of Ajanta Packaging, keenly observed the void in the high quality short-

run labels market in the area. This was the area where Ajanta has been able to create an early niche. This feat is significantly contributed by their Iwasaki. He is a great fan of the Iwasaki Waterless Offset and has one in all his units – Baddi, Daman, Mumbai and now in Sharjah. According to Chandana Gunaratne, GM, Ajanta Packaging FZC (Sharjah), Iwasaki is one of the key reasons for the success of Ajanta in Sharjah. Today they do pressure sensitive labels, sticker, waterless offset printing, Flexo printing for production of tags, labels and security labels etc. The trusted GM is the able Captain of Ajanta’s Dubai ship. His name bears striking similarity with that of Chandan Khanna, for whom the whole of Ajanta is a big family. He reveals that they produce about 500 thousand square meters in a month. They are also expanding their reach to the European markets. Ajanta’s Thai plant is already in
production and Mr. Khanna is quite busy with setting up systems there. According to Chandana, the growth of the Sharjah plant is just because of the excellent sales and production team that the management has been able to develop. “Almost all of them have been handpicked by us. Mr.Khanna and I firmly believe in hiring the best in the industry – be it the staff for sales or production,” he asserts. Moreover, it has been Ajanta’s strategy to promote people from its own cadre. “This gives the workers an impetus to work harder and prove themselves to climb the ladder of growth as the company grows,” he adds. Mr.Khanna firmly believes in developing longterm partnerships and he actively partners with his clients in growth. This is the basic strength which has spelled tremendous
growth for Ajanta. “The core team works closely with the Brand Managers. The team helps them with value-adding inputs. Strongly believing in ‘best brands deserve exceptional labels’, Ajanta puts special emphasis on overall look enhancement in all its solutions. He is also very passionate about his work and which is evenly evident at all Ajanta operations. We have been witness to its growth trajectory and appreciate the step by step yet fast growth the company has been able to achieve over the years. He believes in taking one step at a time. Yet, he enthusiastically ensures the things settle in the shortest possible time – only to move on to the next step. The result is seen in the gradual addition of units by Ajanta Packaging across the country as well as at strategic global locations. Ajanta’s is an interesting and inspiring story!
AzimutPrint expands capacity with a second MPS Flexo Press A new EF UV flexo press with 7 colours for the Russian label printer will primarily print industrial, food and commodity labels MPS has successfully installed an EF 430 flexo press for Russian label printer AzimutPrint. The EF press, a second MPS flexo press for AzimutPrint, will primarily print industrial, food and commodity self-adhesive labels. AzimutPrint previously purchased an MPS EF 410 flexo press with 10 colours and Automated Print Control (APC), which prints and converts comprehensive designs for oil, pharmaceutical and cosmetic labels. AzimutPrint’s second EF press is equipped with 7 colours, UV dryers, a die-station, matrix rewinder, web video and a low tension control rewind system. Another feature of the EF flexo press is gearless technology; as there is no connection between the plate roller and the impression cylinder there is no friction, resulting in no gear marking. General Manager Mr. Piotr Lavrov of AzimutPrint next to their second MPS press.
Superior performance from their first MPS press along with exceptional aftersales service and support from local MPS agent Ogard led to AzimutPrint opting for a second MPS flexo press investment. AzimutPrint’s printing manager Mr.Artem Volkov comments: “Our first MPS EF press proved to be a versatile printing press: stable print quality, flexibility and performance are a given on this press. Even when running more challenging print jobs, we achieved optimum
production results. We also valued the availability of local sales and service support from Ogard, who is always quick to respond with any advice or assistance we need. It just simply made sense to invest once again in MPS.” Founded in 1996, AzimutPrint specializes in the production of self-adhesive labels,

A total of 230 exhibitors presented their products on the three trade fair days, this represented an increase in the number of exhibitors and in the occupied net area. The area of food processing was represented at both trade fairs for the first time and is to be expanded further in the future. The trade fair duo again confirmed its reputation as a business platform that provides customised solutions for the Indian market. A striking feature this time was that

and its subsidiary MMI India for drink technology India, also drew a most positive balance. “We have achieved a completely new level with this result,” declared Dr. Reinhard Pfeiffer, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Messe München International. “Following three joint events, drink technology India and International PackTech India have finally become established in the India market.” Werner M. Dornscheidt, Chief Executive Officer of Messe Düsseldorf, underlined: “Companies meet well prepared customers here who are ready to invest. Exhibiting companies reported very concrete business negotiations. The visitors put up with long travel distances in part to experience new technologies of international and domestic suppliers live at this trade fair. The very positive result of the trade fair duo makes us optimistic for the future.” For the conceptual sponsor of International
PackTech India and drink technology India, the professional association Food Processing and Packaging Machinery in the German Engineering Federation (VDMA), its Managing Director Richard Clemens stated: “Our expectations with respect to the number of visitors and competence have been considerably exceeded. You sense a very positive mood with corresponding investment projects. Both trade fairs have become the optimum platform for the industry, and the many high-quality contacts promise good trade fair follow-up business.” The Indian branch of VDMA, VDMA India, provided valuable support in moderating the round table talks and the exhibitor forums. There were also a lot of visitors at events of the supporting programme as at the stand presentations of the exhibitors. The Round Table Talk, held for the first time within the context of drink technology India, especially generated a lot of interest. Exciting Premiere of dmax First customers saw the dmax large-format digital varnishing machine in practical operation
The new dmax large-format digital varnishing machine is getting the finishing market moving. The development partners, Steinemann Technology and Schmid Rhyner, already gave the trade press an exclusive presentation of their trendsetting innovation in June. European print providers, finishers, printing press, packaging and paper manufacturers, together with brand owners, were then invited to the Premiere in late September 2014. The first publications in the professional media had already elicited a massive response from very different segments of the finishing market, and the almost 50 participants at the event proved to be equally impressed by the performance, the versatility and the extremely high quality of varnish application of the dmax. The greatest enthusiasm was aroused by the filigree varnish application with extremely sharp contours, even on very fine lines and types, the possibility of applying different quantities of varnish on one and the same sheet, and the haptic effects, which are unique for a non-contact application method.
dmax high-speed, largeformat, digital varnishing machine was presented for the first time to potential customers. Almost 50 European print providers, finishers, printing press, packaging and paper manufacturers, and brand owners took up the invitation.

In a close, cooperative partnership and under the motto ‘a joint competence’, Steinemann Technology, Schmid Rhyner and Druckhaus Mainfranken had prepared the dmax for the market under real production conditions at Druckhaus Mainfranken in the preceding months. The dmax is based on the diVar technology (Digital Varnishing Technology) of Schmid Rhyner and the sturdy mechanical engineering of Steinemann Technology, and can spot varnish up to 10,000 sheets per hour in formats up to 1,080 x 780 mm, applying quantities of varnish between 4 g/m2 and 35 g/m2. The principal target markets are packaging and commercial printing. One secret behind the extremely high varnishing quality of the dmax is the patented ‘Pinhole Killer’. This term denotes a special process for post-treating the liquid varnish film (diVar Post Print Enhancement).
For Schlatterbeck, Steinemann was the partner of choice when it came to developing the dmax. “The company has been at home in varnishing for decades and has comprehensive machine expertise. Together, we succeeded in optimally coordinating varnish and machine.”
Varnishing machine for industrial requirements “From the very beginning, our aim was to develop a solution for industrial production,” said Markus Müller, Vice President Marketing & Sales at Steinemann Technology, formulating the goal of the three partners. Consequently, dmax also stands for maximum sheet format and maximum availability. The digital varnishing machine is of classical modular design and can be expanded to include various options, such as a redundant inkjet system or an IR drier in addition to the UV drier of the standard configuration. “The print mark sensor with register correction in the lateral and machine directions makes a decisive contribution to the high varnishing quality, together with skew compensation,” said Müller, emphasising a component at the start of the machine. In contrast, alignment by the front edge of the sheet would not have met the high demands on the accuracy of spot varnishing. “The defined print marks enable the dmax to detect the actual positions of the printed images and take them into account, in that it calculates the necessary angular corrections before the sheets are fed in under the inkjet heads, and thus during varnishing.” He said that this, too, was a capability that could only be offered in this form by digital printing technology in combination with maximum computing power in the machine controller. The calender at the front end of the machine is likewise a key factor for the high varnishing quality of the dmax. The Steinemann calender smoothes

out any sheet roughness, while at the same time automatically removing the powder. The result is substrate surfaces that are perfectly prepared for varnish application. “Among other things, the dmax owes its optional sample gate, and the integrated inspection table with data RIP for corrections during production, to suggestions from Druckhaus Mainfranken,” noted Müller. At the gate, the machine operators can conveniently have control sheets ejected at the push of a button at any production speed, so that they can examine them directly on-site in suitable light and, if necessary, adjust the machine settings via the control system monitor. These features alone illustrated that the dmax was created in close cooperation with experts in practical industrial printing. As the manufacturer of the print heads, Ricoh likewise showed high commitment in its work on the development project. “We greatly appreciate their all-round support,” said Müller in recognition of the manufacturer’s help.
Stepping off the beaten track “We’re convinced that printing needs a new dimension if it wants to remain competitive in today’s media mix,” said Ulrich Stetter, Managing Director of Druckhaus Mainfranken, summing up his company’s interest in the dmax project. He said digital varnishing technology was the ideal method for the low-cost, high-quality finishing of short runs of print products of the kind that Druckhaus Mainfranken produces as an industrial print provider for the European online print market. On the other hand, the dmax offered the necessary capacity for also finishing longer runs quickly and economically. As a result, even a number of external print providers today availed themselves of the sophisticated production processes used by Druckhaus Mainfranken, a company that was only founded in 2006.
All in all, up to 15,000 jobs per day are now handled there. Just a few weeks after installing the prototype, the company was able to produce stably on the machine at speeds of 8,000 sheets per hour and more. “The high production speed and large format of the dmax make it possible for us to achieve a real quantum leap in terms of productivity when varnishing print products,” said Stetter. The high quality of the haptic effects was another winning feature. “We can now open the door to a market that’s been waiting for years and couldn’t be served in the past.” From his point of view, the dmax is nothing less than a milestone in print finishing.
The dmax in practice In the subsequent hands-on session in a production shop of Druckhaus Mainfranken, the visitors watched both a combined form with various jobs and a completely black sheet being finished at different machine speeds and with different quantities of varnish. Drops of water on fresh, crisp apples, glittering scales on the skin of a shiny green snake, or the finely branching veins of a leaf – the eye-catching varnish effects on the images of the combined form certainly had an impact on the participants at the customer event. The same applied to the varnished screen tints, the varnished merging positive and reverse types in different point sizes, the varnished lines with a fineness of as little as two points, and numerous other, mostly decidedly filigree print elements of different sizes on solid black surfaces, on both the combined form and the completely black sheet. Many of the visitors stood together in groups and discussed the results that could be achieved with the dmax – waiting for the machine operators to hand them the results of the next print job.
Finally, the dmax was even ‘opened up’ to give the visitors a clear view of key components. For example, the shutter was raised on the unit behind which the inkjet printing unit was concealed. The things presented by the team of technicians from Steinemann Technology surrounding dmax Project Manager Patrik Moser and the machine operators from Druckhaus Mainfranken included the cleaning of the print heads. They are automatically moved into a collecting tank and washed there. The machine is ready to start work again just a few minutes later. Replacement of the print heads is equally convenient. If the worst comes to the worst, they are quickly exchanged by Plug & Play. “Those are all features that underline our ambition to develop a machine for industrial requirements,” said Müller, summing up the many fine points of the dmax – produced at the Steinemann factory in St. Gallen in Switzerland – that enable smooth-running, dependable workflows in daily production. “There’s enormous scope for further development of diVar technology and the dmax. Given the response from the market to date, there can be no doubt about that,” said Schmid Rhyner CEO Jakob Rohner, looking to the future. The next development steps would now be defined in cooperation with customers. “After the advance reports in the professional media, we came here with pretty high expectations,” said one participant. “It was very important for us to see for ourselves just what the inkjet process is capable of doing today when it comes to varnishing printed sheets.” The excellent quality, in combination with the high productivity, costefficiency and flexibility of digital printing, opened up enormous possibilities, even in the production of finished print products, that were previously not feasible solely for reasons of cost.
