Kodak Flexcel NX System: Flexo is where Packaging Stands! Kodak’s Packaging shift is largely governed by its Flexcel NX System which leads the Flexo’s growth in today’s packaging space. This was well evident at the recent drupa that Kodak had almost 50% of their technologies focused on packaging in some way. The story of this shift started in 2005 with Kodak buying a whole set of printing supplies companies – from to Creo, Scitex Digital and KPG and integrating them together. These companies were earlier involved in publishing, direct mail, brochure printing works etc. and Kodak sensed that all these technologies would go into packaging over time. Seeing a huge opportunity in their ability to take their Offset technology – known for its image quality, consistency and cost effectiveness – to the Flexo packaging space around 2005-2006, Kodak invented the pathbreaking Flexcel NX technology.

Kodak Flexcel NX was in fact among the first technologies that Kodak decided to go after. “We specifically believed that we could innovate in the Flexo packaging space,” says Mr. Christopher J. Payne, General Manager and Vice President Eastman Kodak Company. “Kodak invented Flexcel NX which is today driving two things in Flexo. First is reinventing what Flexo is – the whole ability to do the highest level of image quality doing consistently over time. The second is to improve efficiency in the pressroom,” he continues.
is where packaging stands in the overall economy,” states Christopher.
Different printing processes catering to packaging and Kodak’s key solutions and focus areas thereof In the Packaging sphere, Flexo is the key area of focus for Kodak. Kodak’s offering here has been unique in two ways – the ability to do best image quality and the ability to provide cost effectiveness through production efficiency. Kodak has a strong heritage with robust technologies like SQUARESPOT imaging technology in their CtP devices and Thermal imaging in their proofing products. The latest in the line is the SYSTEM ’16 launched at drupa. It’s a technology that features significant improvements in both software and hardware. Traditionally, Kodak customers have joined Kodak for image quality and stayed for efficiency and
With an installed base of over 500 units of Flexcel NX Systems worldwide (22 in India), Kodak has continued innovation and has developed a number of technologies in the Flexo space as well as invested in Workflow including in the Offset and Inkjet space. PRESSIdeas had a detailed discussion with key personalities from Kodak’s top management on its Flexo technologies, solutions, focus areas, industry in general and much more. This was the first trip of Christopher to India. He met with a lot of printers and sees a lot of opportunities in India. Given India’s demographics that constitute a huge middle class with growing disposable income that’s catching up to buying at malls and consuming packaged foods, Flexo packaging has a huge potential in the country. Bringing a lot of opportunities for different printers, Flexo offers greater flexibility and productivity for brands. Christopher and his team explored the Indian industry to find how it can leap frog in this space as markets in other parts of world have, even as this growth trend continues to develop. “India is an exciting market place in the dynamics where Flexo Mr. Christopher J.Payne, GM and VP Eastman Kodak Company.

productivity. In packaging, the customers initially remained focused on flexible and labels for around 4-5 years. But today they are moving more into corrugation and folding cartons; this was also evident at the recent drupa. “Now customers will be enjoying the same level of image quality and production efficiency in these segments also,” declares Christopher.
Flexo Printing is all about how you transfer ink “Real focus of Kodak’s innovation around Flexcel NX has been on how the plate actually performs on press,” states Ms.Emma Schlotthauer, Director, Marketing, Eastman Kodak Company. “When we talk about production efficiencies, we mean it in the pressroom. Since, it is the press where the printers make their money irrespective of the printing process. The technologies introduced in SYSTEM ’16 allows printers to get greater speeds on press – which turn to greater yields, faster start-up times and less material waste – that improve their bottom line as well as uptime,” she continues. Flexo Printing is all about how you transfer ink and the technology here helps control ink transfer of press. Apart from efficiency in transfer of ink, it determines the way the press runs – how often the press has to stop; how quickly it comes up to colour; how fast it can run; and how quickly it can dry. The Flexcel NX system’s features essentially allow a platemaker to optimize the plate for ink transfer for a particular print condition. Consequently, irrespective of a printer printing solvent inks or water-based inks, small anilox or large anilox volumes, it allows him to customize the plates (plate surfaces). For example, a typical flexible packaging job may have a seven or eight colour job on press. That may contain four process colours, a white lay down or even two special colours. All of those inks would work in a slightly different way; they would require different anilox volumes to be able to transfer different pigment sizes. In order to optimize ink transfer for all of those different components of a job, a plate has to behave a little differently for each of them. Through software and imaging, Flexcel NX allows users to customize the surface of the plate to print optimal for White, for Process colours as well as for Spot colours. What’s interesting is

that the user requires just a single plate type for all this – through the power of imaging and the ability to texturize the surface of the plate using different sizes, shapes and spacing of the dots. “It’s not just the dots but also the pattern on top of the dots that deliver the said quality and capability. The dots that make the graphic image and the patterns on top allow transfer of ink efficiently. All in all, the Flexcel NX SYSTEM’16 is all about the ability to provide customized plate surfaces right through plate patterning to optimize both for print quality and efficiency,” explains Emma. In addition, the core capabilities of the system come from – the high resolution of the SQUARESPOT imaging technology,
high resolution of the thermal imaging layer technology and the ability to take an image from a data file and exactly reproduce that on a plate. “Now, customers can control exactly the performance of the plate i.e., how it behaves on press. It eliminates the pre-press operation’s need for an inventory of 4-5 plate types for supplying to different customers – who may be printing packaging, labels, corrugated boards or something else. They can supply all these customers just one plate type by customizing the surface,” she affirms.
Environmental sustainable performance of Indian industry vis-à-vis global standards Apart from various governments world

over being laying down stringent rules for environmental protection and friendlier solutions, brands too have been doing significant to improve their solutions’ environmental footprint. Driven by consumers, they are now developing products that are safer, disposable, re-usable and are available at comparable prices. We see that customers want environmental friendly solutions not any costlier than existing solutions. At drupa Kodak introduced technologies to help the industry move forward in sustainable solutions. Apart from them, Flexcel NX too leads in promotion of global sustainability standards. With India having less stringent environmental safety standards than other developed economies like Germany, the US and even China, the awareness about sustainability is yet to catch up in the Indian industry. With the awareness standing dismally low around 3 to 4 on a scale of ten, customers in the country are less prepared to pay anything extra for environmentally friendlier products.

Given the figure that 50 percent of global packaging is being done for top brands – top 100 global brands are driving 50 percent packaging globally – today big brands world over are driving sustainable packaging for their customers. “Though India is still in the lower rung of global sustainability standards, the shift, especially in the pharmaceutical packaging and food packaging, is asking for environmentally friendly solutions. For example, Hindustan Unilever has a mission statement that says that they want to reduce the waste, use of solvents as well as number of consumables etc. They are among the first movers. “There is a lack of regulatory enforcement right now but we see it’s waiting for a big change in near future. Kodak helps the current situation in many ways. Key among them is by reducing the number of plates used for printing. Other environmental benefits that Kodak helps bring about include longer plate life and wider tonal range – by reducing number of colours by bringing spot colours back into process colour work etc.”
– says Vidhu Gautam, Regional Business Manager at Kodak. “Since we don’t see customers are too keen to invest particularly in environmentally friendlier technologies, we understand that sustainability largely comes through efficiencies, productivity, lean manufacturing processes and waste reduction. Consequently, solutions that drive internal production efficiencies are a win-win situation for customers. In packaging industry, things like thinner films, layers and liners help reduce weight and improve economics of production and at the same time drive the sustainability,” adds Emma. Kodak has always kept its technologies focused on how they can help people with light-weight materials, reduce their wastes, run their presses faster with less energy consumption and don’t have inefficient down times. All these things make significant contributions while helping printers reduce

their environmental footprint. There is an apparent and imminent need for knowledge about sustainability to be spread evenly. It is the brands that are driving the need for sustainable solutions. Unlike in Europe where they have organized to the level of separating plastic and paper from packaging to smooth their recycling, in India the ways are still too far from that. Everyone has to play his part to make it possible. Big brands too, though they have adopted highly sustainable methods for their packaging in Europe and elsewhere, have been keen on getting their packaging at the least possible price and sadly, sustainability is not a priority for them in India.
Customer vs. Manufacturer technology awareness and its benefits Today technology innovators are innovating as well as partnering with users of those technologies to bring out the right solutions. It’s only a matter of time when a new technology is readily accepted in the market. During last decade, in addition to plates, innovation has been in every sphere from presses to inks, aniloxes, paper, pre-press and converting and finishing etc. This in turn is challenging the customers to keep up with technology, understand its importance, make investment decisions and make better technologies last. Industry is in a period of intense innovation. Kodak has played a significant part in driving this. The Flexcel NX is getting major attraction today. “In our industry, technological innovations don’t become a success overnight; it’s a period of several years before a technology adds to the available choices of the customer,” says Mr.Abraham Prabhakar, Vice President - Micro 3D Printing and Packaging Solutions, Kodak.
‘Make in India’ and Kodak Kodak manufacturers its Flexo solutions in three locations globally – Japan (Flexo plates), US (Thermal Imaging Layer) and China (CtP devices). The R&D is carried out in Israel and Canada. Though Thermal Imaging Layer has been manufactured by Kodak for many decades, it bought a company in Japan to add Flexo Plate manufacturing to its portfolio. That company was already manufacturing plates for over 20 years at that time. With all the infrastructure and facilities in place there, Kodak kept the manufacturing there. “Since all these set-ups require huge investments along with
availability of basic skill levels, the set-ups have been kept as earlier and any possible shift will be based on need of the market and customers,” says Christopher responding on a query about possibilities of manufacturing in India in wake of the recent aggressive promotion of the Make-in-India concept.
Automation opportunities at the bottom Top players with heavy investment are more likely to go for automation as a way of recovering their investments. Contrarily, lower down the ladder, printers have less investment to recover and automation is not found as much as it is at higher levels. Automation is a key opportunity for top players to maximize their return. Another reason may be that they are also better at presenting themselves to the top brand owners as ideal service providers. Apart from all these things, what actually stops players from adopting automation readily is the availability of labour in India. Here, we don’t have labour costs as a major limitation in production. While automation costs put vis-àvis costs of labour-intensive alternatives, the latter wins and consequently, we have less automation as we move lower in our industry. “Though majority of packaging providers have automation high on their agenda, it’s ultimately the economies that win over a process,” believes Vidhu. “Surely, automation brings profitability with reduced waste, faster turnovers and customer satisfaction by way of less possibility of errors due to fewer human intervention in production and other processes,” he adds. “Even though Flexcel NX is an enabler of automation that the industry is moving to, it also uses more manual process, is more repeatable and more efficient while setting up a press. This way Flexcel NX is helping in standardization even if the printer does not change his existing technologies,” puts in Christopher.
substrates like paper. Gravure has been a choice for flexible packaging. However, when Flexcel NX got launched at drupa 2008, certain industry quarters had reservations about its success. A few industry experts had even almost written off the technology. But, it didn’t happen that way and last year the technology reached the milestone of crossing the 100 mark. “The Flexo technology has been widely accepted in the industry both in terms of quality and productivity. Today almost 90 percent of labels are Flexo printed; both labels and tags have fully accepted the Flexo technology. Customers too have accepted the technology for its quality, price and productivity. Similarly, carton and mono-carton printing has been adopting flexography as a printing process. Other key application areas are like pouches and sachets that too are moving from other printing processes to Flexographic printing,” adds Abraham.
Collaborating with MPS: showcasing Flexo capabilities visa-vis Digital At Chicago Labelexpo show, Kodak collaborated with MPS. The collaboration was focused on showcasing how Flexo can compete with Digital. “Digital has probably the largest share in label printing. Together with MPS, Kodak showcased Flexo’s true capabilities and quality that can truly compete with Digital print quality,” reveals Emma. “The key focus was to ensure that printing processes aren’t dictated by brands. A product needn’t be print process specific because of quality. It should be other factors that decide the choice of one process over the other. Those factors should be the likes of the turnaround time, volume and substrate. We showcased that whether a customer requires Digital for short run or Flexo for higher volumes, quality should not be a barrier. There are Kodak customers who are printing the same products in Flexo and Gravure; Flexo and Offset; and Flexo and Digital,” she expains.
Flexo vs. Gravure vs. Offset Flexo has come a long way from being a ‘rubber stamp technology’ to be at par with Offset and Gravure in terms of quality and productivity. “Putting it in one line, today, we can ‘deliver the quality of Offset and class of Gravure with Flexcel NX’,” says Vidhu. Flexo is today the fastest growing segment of printing when compared to Gravure and Offset. Offset has been at the top for simple
Kodak provides the freedom Designers too have been helped by Kodak technology in a significant way. While producing artwork for different printing processes, it was usually a designer’s nightmare to get an artwork for a particular printing process printed in another printing process as well. The need for a packaging for a brand to be uniform and consistent

in quality, colour and reproduction across media has been well answered by Kodak technology which has hugely eased the designers’ work. “Since various packaging (with portions of Gravure, Flexo, Digital or Flexo) of a particular brand has to meet the lowest common denominator to bring consistency to the brand, there was an absolute need for ‘freedom’. This ‘freedom’ has been provided by Kodak technology – now designers can design their package knowing they don’t have to make changes or tweak as per different processes including Flexo,” asserts Emma. In other words, Kodak enables packaging designers or producers to produce best quality packaging at the lowest cost and at the same time take those barriers and inconsistencies between various print processes away. The gap between the benefits of existing and new technologies can be filled by education. In this regard, Kodak has been at the forefront – providing education about the true capabilities of the technologies available to their users. It has been in touch with designers, pre-press, press and other workflow users / operators to know exactly about their requirements and provide solutions and education regarding the latest technological capabilities of these solutions. At the upcoming Labelexpo, Kodak will be bringing in its drupa Street Box experience to Indian customers. It is planning to wow its customers by showing them what they can do with Kodak’s technology with a showcase of real life examples from across the globe. Other important area is security printing.
Kodak solutions in this sphere will also be offered at the show. Kodak has developed many pathbreaking technologies in security printing arena. The technologies that impart security to products include the capability of micro-texturization and very fine print.
shorter and Gravure is not a viable solution there. Flexo is filling this gap efficiently with its latest capabilities. As for Digital, it is best suited for very short runs and once the threshold is crossed; it becomes less beneficial when compared to other technologies.
Flexo in India and Kodak Overall, Flexo industry in India is growing. New installations are coming along. The team in India lead by Abraham, has done a great job. Kodak is growing not only in terms of installations but number of presses using Kodak plates. “The growth in India is all technology driven. Customers are seeing the benefits in the technology and are adopting the technology and we are seeing that growth,” says Christopher. Kodak’s current focus area in India vis-àvis packaging is Wide-web Flexo (flexible packaging/ C I Flexo). The next focus area is Labels. “In the last year, Indian printers have added over 30 Wide-web CI Flexo presses. With a tremendous growth in this market, Kodak has a larger role to play. With the confidence in Flexcel NX technology gaining, even Gravure printers who were 100 percent into Gravure are now looking to add Flexo capabilities,” says Abraham. Flexo is among the fastest growing segments in the printing industry of not only India but the whole of Asia. The key growth areas of Flexo are the CI Flexo and the Narrowweb Label segments. Gravure printers are adopting Flexo as a complementing technology. This is driven by a number of factors. The run lengths are becoming
Unlike other players with specialization in a particular area, Kodak has expertise and solutions across major segments and technologies. Kodak provides solutions in Offset, Digital (both Inkjet and Electrophotographic) and Flexo. Therefore, it has deep understanding of all these technologies and their market characteristics. Digital, for example, though got introduced into commercial printing around two decades ago, still answers only 5 percent of the total commercial print volume world over. The main reason for this is the economies. “The best model for packaging printing would be imprinting system with Flexo and Inkjet combination. Packaging is growing because of the rise in disposable income of the middle class. Brands are attracting this spending through packaging which is consequently enjoying a boost. These dynamics are playing in favour of Flexo not only in India but in other parts of the world as well. “For Kodak India is a key market place in packaging space, Flexo, Offset, Inkjet and other areas represented by Kodak’s workflow,” says Vidhu. “Packaging is the market where Kodak wants to be. Today every single trade shop in India who are into Digital Flexo platemaking has the Kodak Flexcel NX technology,” says Abraham. Kodak chose to be in the packaging space to differentiate the packaging in terms of image quality, productivity and efficiency. After has come out stronger from the recent shake it went through. It is as smooth and profitable as ever with second quarter results showing growth and profit. “Kodak is moving ahead. Flexo Packaging is one of the growth engines inside of Kodak driving this growth. Kodak takes the heritage of technological innovations ahead and helps its customers grow. Our customers are able to differentiate their products to the brands and in turn help Kodak grow. Kodak is optimistic about where they are and what the path forward is,” concludes Christopher.

Paper stocks add to investors wealth Owning to attractive valuations, a sharp drop in raw material cost and closing down of a few plants, over 15 stocks from the Paper Industry have enabled investors to more than double their wealth in the last one year. These stocks are of companies including Kushal Tradelink, Star Paper, Emami Paper, Ruchira Papers, Malu Paper Mill etc. The S&P BSE Sensex rose about 1 per cent in last one year. Though paper industry saw a good growth over last couple of years, the drop in raw
material cost in present year has improved margins further for the paper players. Other factors too augur well for coming years for the paper industry. India is yet to catch up with per capita consumption of paper in other developed economies. With many paper plants being shut down globally, the demand-supply equation is too in the manufacturers’ favour. Even as paper prices are on the rise, the demand is likely to be on the upswing with the retail, online shopping and packaging boom.

Pressing for controlled press operations In the third Knowledge Sharing Workshop, Mr Afsal Kottal and Das Damodharan, from Percept Printing Solutions shared the knowledge about Colour Management and Process Control in Offset printing. “Two years ago, since we began our journey with Colour Management and Process Control, I have experienced better and consistent product output,” says MMS President, Tushar Dhote while welcoming the eager audience gathered at the MMS’ Training Centre in Mumbai on October 14. He quickly introduced the two speakers of the day – Business Director of Percept Printing Solutions, Afsal Kottal and the Technical Expert and the Field Services Officer Das Damodharan. Taking a very focused and practical approach, Mr Kottal began the knowledge sharing process by encouraging the members of the audience to share their experience with colour, process control, and prepress and press management. Fred Poonawala of Comart, the veteran in the industry and also an experienced customer of GMG shared his experience. He said, “we have been using GMG colour systems for quite some time now. It has improved over the course of time, and it has helped us deliver consistent output through our presses and on multiple papers.” He further added, “We can simultaneously print two jobs on two different machines with constant and colourmatched output on two papers – for cover and inside pages.” Several members of the audience – business owners and operators – echoed the similar experience sharing. They shared the experience of better product output, efficient operations, greater customer satisfaction, and some direct savings with ink optimisation and process control technologies. A large part of the audience, however, were struggling and experimenting with colour management and process control with their offset presses.
Assurance from an expert Mr Kottal assured all the members of the audience that, with some easy yet decisive steps they all can implement sound and efficient colour management and press control technologies for better and consistent output. He said, “the high-quality products are the only differentiator for any print business owner in the contemporary
competitive world. In fact, high and consistent quality is the top priority besides innovation and speed of delivery for the discerning clients.” He stressed upon the fact that data from a wide range of suppliers is used in offset printing, and not all of it complies with the offset standards. Manual adaptation of data to the respective printing conditions calls for expertise on the part of the staff and costs a lot of time and money. In the world of declining run lengths and a greater degree of individualisation, the print operations must be agile and quick to stay competitive.
A reliable solution “Colour management has improved and come a long way. The process, today, seamlessly handles creative, prepress and printing process through a consistent and controlled workflow,” assured Mr Kottal. Explaining the GMG offerings, he said, “GMG’s software solutions keep you in control of colour, without much hassle. The preflight is automated to the stage that it can add bleed to some files.” He further added, “all the GMG products – single or modular – support the common international standards, and they let you define in-house standards.” Mr Kottal, along with Mr Damodharan, then explained the features and details of the four GMG-color product offerings – the ColurServer, ColorProof, InkOptimizer and PrintControl. The ColorServer is at the core of a colour management workflow and production reliability. “You don’t have to worry much. The ColorServer fully automatically matches RGB, CMYK and mixed-data to a consistent colour standard by separation, representation or colour conversion,” said Mr Damodharan. He added, “automation ensures that all data is optimally prepared and delivers identical colour appearance on the press and papers.” The DeviceLink approach devised by GMG avoids classical drawbacks of ICC technology, such as the representation of the black channel.
it complies with the relevant standard (ISO, FOGRA, ECI, etc.) or in-house standard. This proof can become a valid contract proof. The InkOptimizer replaces CMY colour components by black while preserving the colour impressions. The improved colour composition offers smooth gradient, stabilised greys and significant improvement in printing properties. The tool also ensures ink savings. The PrintControl completes and ties together the standardisation and process control. The software tool is intuitive to operate and provides total control over the entire printing process employing a detailed, numeric and graphic evaluation of a single control strip. The PrintControl tweaks the characteristics for plate setting to achieve the prescribed targets for a press that does not comply with the defined standard.
A strong footprint While concluding the workshop, Mr Kottal shared that they serve about 150 clients across India, including the big names such as Dainik Bhaskar and Lokmat. Worldwide, GMG has about 14,000 installations. He also added that only in the textile market of Surat in Gujarat, about 19 photographers and 15 presses use GMGcolour solutions. Before the two and a half hour interactive and truly knowledge sharing workshop session closed, Mr Kottal had a strong and straightforward message for the audience, “you can charge a premium only if you strive to deliver the best. If you are not delivering your best possible quality and colour, you are being ‘mechanical’, and not achieving your full potential.”
The ColorProof, in combination with proofing media, ensures the best possible quality when producing proof. The tool can be used to verify the proof, and document that

Maharshi Labels: Rising Label Applicator manufacturer of India One of India’s leading label applicator manufacturers also started producing labels and now eyes the promising packaging segment. Ahmedabad based Maharshi Group is headed by Rajesh Shah. Today the labels and label applicator manufacturer has a conspicuous presence in the label industry. Rajesh started business with fabrication of vessels and catering to various needs of the pharma and chemical industry. Soon he got into developing the label dispensers and applicators. He also took Guhl & Scheibler AG agency selling their equipment in India. He went to Germany for training and after returning developed his first labeller. Since then there is no looking back. The Label applicator manufacturing facility is now a part of the Maharshi group and known as Maharshi Udyog. It is one of the largest Label Applicator manufacturing companies in India. With a staff strength of 80 people, the facility spreads 110,000 square feet with additional 70,000 feet land adjacent to the factory kept for further expansion. His brothers Bhagwat Shah and Hiren Shah are also part of the management of the growing group. While Rajesh looks after the overall administration, Bhagwat looks after the finance and Hiren looks after the technology part of Maharshi. Hiren’s brotherin-law Jigesh Dani takes care of the sales & marketing of the group. Rajesh’s son is taking care of automation and marketing. Mahrishi Udyog’s sprawling shopfloor is quite impressive with a variety of equipment that creates solutions ranging from simple label applicators to print & apply systems for variable data labels incorporating barcode inspection, missing label detection bottle neck inspection and automatic segregation. They are also entering into packaging machines that include machine that do automatic filling, capping, labelling, carton erection, product insertion and whole gambit of automatic packaging. The unit is complete with design, electronics and quality control departments. The spare part storage is all meticulously systemized with computer support and it is easy to trace the spares
instantly when a customer is in need. The whole process of customer service support is planned at the manufacturing stage itself. All equipment on completion undergo strenuous tests before the customer is called in for the “Factory Acceptance Test”. In the 1980s, when Indian labelstock manufacturing was still in its infancy, most of the conversion of stock to labels was done on slow flat bed Japanese label presses. When the market for labellers grew, the demand for labels in roll form too grew. The vendors weren’t able to meet the increased demand and Maharshi decided to integrate forward and produce labels themselves. This was the birth of Maharshi Labels. In 1995, they invested along with Rajender Gandhi and Jigesh Dani to initiate Maharshi Labels. Rajender Gandhi looked after production and Jigesh took care of marketing. Within two years, they had invested in 3-4 presses which were flat bed Onda and Changi presses. With increase in demand for labels, in 1997 they added a ten inch rotary flexo Acquaflex label press to augment their production capacity. The decade of nineties and later, saw a sea change and growth in the label industry in India. Flexo printing, plate making, inks and pre-press was evolving. Usage of self adhesive labels in India was on the rise. Automation in the packaging industry became not just a process but an imperative need to meet deadlines. Between 1997-2012 Maharshi bought a label press every alternate year. They were a Mark Andy customer and when the MA-LP-3000 was launched, they bought it within months. Later they replaced
their Mark Andys with Gidue presses. Today they operate with 5 Gidue (Bobst) 370mm label presses. They still use the old flatbed machines for the real short runs. One of the earliest labels they printed was that of Vasmol, a popular brand. The most challenging and satisfying job till date remains the Signature whiskey label. That label needed micro embossing, foiling with three different foils and printing with special pantone shades. The job became extremely challenging because the customer did not give any artwork. They were just handed over a few labels to copy and produce identical. Maharshi answered the challenge by developing a special foiling machine in-house and importing blocks from UK. The challenge was successfully met and brought immense satisfaction. Rajubhai and Jigesh continue to efficiently run the label enterprise with active support of the Shah family. However their wish to enter into packaging is still there. As Jigesh says, “The day we can convert it on a web press in-line cost effectively, we will also be into packaging yet again.” At the moment Maharshi’s has no immediate expansion plans though the space and resources to expand are there. Their label unit operates from a land area of 50,000 square feet and a shop floor of 30,000 square feet. The total group turnover of Maharshi is around $15 million.

GEW to present fully air-cooled LA1 UV LED curing lamphead GEW will present fully air-cooled LA1 UV LED curing lamphead at Labelexpo India 2016. LA1 is built around the same proven cassette-based design as the E2C and LW1 lampheads, and is fully compatible with existing ArcLED systems without the need for external chillers, pipes or coolant, or indeed any other modification.
Within an ArcLED system, printers are able to operate full hybrid UV curing, working with both mercury arc and LED lamp technology on the same press. Mercury arc cassettes and LED cassettes both use the same lamphead casing, the same power supply and air cooling ducts. The operator simply swaps the required cassette and the
Rhino ArcLED power supply automatically recognizes which type of cassette is installed in the machine, switches from low voltage DC power for the LEDs to high voltage AC for the arc lamps and changes the display on the Rhino touchscreen control accordingly. Printing presses that operate with ArcLED technology can be upgraded from arc lamps to LED to benefit from both technologies with the same power supply, controls and cooling system. GEW’s new multi-point in-line UV monitor consists of calibrated sensors positioned along the length of the UV lamp to measure the UV intensity in the curing system. It continuously reads and records the actual intensity across the full width of the lamp and calculates the UV energy dose on the substrate with precision. A dose monitor is set to alert the operator before the wrong dose could have an impact on production. Other systems on display will include range of UV curing systems comprising mercury arc systems, LED systems and hybrid units alongside the fully hybrid Rhino ArcLED electronic power supply.

New BOBST K5 Expert unveiled at Manchester Open House Over 80 visitors from around the world attended this year’s Bobst Manchester Open House held at its Competence Centre on 18th October 2016. The event saw the world premiere of the NEW BOBST K5 Expert, the highest productivity metallizer in the world. The BOBST K5 Expert, the next generation of the successful K5000 metallizer, can run at speeds up to 1200m/min, is available in widths from 2450mm to 3650mm and can house increased roll diameters of up to 1270mm to meet new industry trends for improved productivity. Once again BOBST is setting new standards in vacuum metallization for the packaging industry; the K5 EXPERT houses the largest coating drum in the industry at 700mm which improves collection efficiency by 16%; this means less aluminium consumption and increased boat life resulting in maximum productivity. The K5 EXPERT features design innovations throughout the machine including a totally redesigned evaporation source providing the widest coating window in the market, up to 50% wider than some competitor machines which translates in better coating uniformity and collection efficiency, minimising aluminium wire waste.
A more intuitive HMI screen and software interface make the machine easy to operate. The new design of the machine allows the operator to operate everything from the front of the machine and to be positioned much closer to view the evaporation source and metallization process through the strobe window; the new boat power controls are extremely easy to operate and are located in front of each boat, Another brand new feature, unique in the industry is the Automatic Sequential Control (ASC) system which speeds up start-up of the machine with minimum operator involvement required, making the K5 EXPERT easy to operate. In addition to the well-known BOBST Winding Mechanism based on “true tension control, the new model incorporates low friction Ferrofluidic seals for an even better tension control on the rewind; all-in-all producing a virtually wrinkle-free roll-to-roll vacuum metallization process. The K5 EXPERT has been designed with reliability, serviceability and robustness in mind and as such has a host of new features to give our customers total peace of mind, maximum machine uptime and product quality consistency.
It also has a variety of energy saving and waste reduction features including ECO mode which reduces energy consumption by up to 50% during stand-by and Film Save mode which has a synchronised faster shutter action (opening in just 5 seconds) and aluminium wire ramp up to minimise the amount of un-metallized film (waste) to less than 400m per roll. As an option, the High Deposition (HD) source has an improved design for higher speed of operation for those metallization jobs that require a high deposition rate of up to 4.0 OD. The new machine provides significant cost saving innovations to reduce energy consumption, consumables usage and film waste which results in the lowest production costs available in the market. In addition, faster venting and pump down times results in a reduced production cycle which increases the number of batches/rolls per day. The Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) of the K5 Expert is reduced by up to 25% compared to other metallizers.

Cosmo Films offers intense black with Black Velvet Cosmo Films, manufacturer of speciality BOPP films, has announced the launch of BOPP based Black Velvet lamination films. The newly launched films offer an intense black colour along with a velvet touch to the laminated paper/paperboard or package, thereby enhancing its aesthetics. It is also perfect for post lamination processes like spot UV, foil stamping, printing etc. Solid colours like blue, red and black are tricky to handle, especially when used in the background for Offset printing. These background colours also take longer to dry, leading to increased lead time for print delivery. Therefore, Offset printers usually avoid using these as background colours. However, graphic art designers prefer using black background because of the impact it generates with foiling and other post lamination operations and more so in case of luxury packaging. Understanding this need gap, Cosmo Films has come up with black velvet lamination films which could compensate for the black
printing on paper for background. These black coloured BOPP based velvet touch lamination films need to be laminated to the unprinted paper before going for printing or post lamination embellishments.
replicated in other colours as well. The films have been commercialized and the response so far has been extremely encouraging”.
The films are available for both thermal and wet lamination in 32 and 21 microns respectively and are glueable, stampable and printable in nature. Apart from giving a superior velvet matte finish to the laminated surface, the films also offer excellent scuff resistance. Besides luxury packaging applications, black velvet films are also suitable for high end promotional material and stationery such as coffee table books, magazines, brochures, manuals, posters, shopping bags, wedding cards, gift boxes, calendars, diaries etc. Commenting on the development, Mr. S. The investment will increase Telrol’s capacity to serve the European market. Telrol’s first digital press investment was a Xeikon 3300 in 2009, bought shortly after visiting Labelexpo Brussels. Over time it gradually grew to five digital presses. In 2015, together with Xeikon, Telrol started a successful pilot project with a Xeikon CX3. Today the Almere center boasts the biggest digital capacity in the Benelux and Europe, as it has nine Xeikon systems. All presses are running application specific toner systems: ICE for the 3300 presses and QA-CH toners for the CX3 presses. The mutually beneficial relationship between Xeikon and Telrol enables Telrol to continually grow its visionary digital strategy. Hoessein Hadaoui, CEO of Telrol explains that investing in the Xeikon CX3 was the next logical step, citing its quality and productivity. Also important was the specifically-designed Cheetah toner, developed for high speeds and based on the tried-and-tested ICE toner, which has performed well for Telrol with its other Xeikon presses. The reduced operational cost, together with the benefits of dry toner such as meeting FDA regulations for food contact and offering the ability to print opaque white toner in one pass, were a winning combination. This is ideal for the product mix Telrol delivers. The Xeikon CX3 is a five colour 1200dpi high-speed production press with a top speed of 30 m/min (98 ft/min) and excellent uptime. In addition to the standard CMYK +
White, the fifth station can be used to print gamut extension colours or security colours without reducing productivity. The 1200 x 3600 dpi digital press is dedicated solely to the production of self-adhesive/pressure sensitive labels. The decision to invest in Xeikon’s CX3 came after a thorough analysis of Telrol’s business and developments in its market. It led to the conclusion that there is a strong need to grow and extend the digital capabilities. Wim Maes, President Digital Printing Solutions Division of Flint Group: “This huge investment in Xeikon technology is a great endorsement for the print production quality possible. Working with such a well-respected group is also fantastic recognition of our market ready systems. Telrol offers a broad range of labelling solutions, covered by various printing technologies going from flexo to digital. The further expansion in digital fits with the general trends in the market of increasing diversification. This in turn drives the need for more flexible production processes in digital printing.”
start in the industry thanks to the ability of the Xeikon CX3 to provide the highest productivity in the market of high quality label printing. Being a critical business partner, Xeikon involves us in the development of their technology. Its high quality standards, excellent track record on production capabilities and food safety makes it the perfect partner for our business.” Telrol, headquartered in Almere, the Netherlands – and comprising of Peha Labels, BioLabel, HACCP Label, LMG Ribbons, Kolibri Labels, Q-Tronics, and Sentega Labels – is Europe´s largest producer of self-adhesive labels and paperrolls. It services the markets for food, retail, cosmetics, pharma, home and personal care, logistics and the chemical industry. Xeikon will be present at Hall 03, Booth G15 at the upcoming LabelExpo India 2016.
